Client: The website is super slow. I thought you were going to optimize it?

Me: That is the loading time with the optimizations I said I can apply. That host isn't great for performance unfortunately.

When you don't know what the fuck is going on with your code anymore

The network starts slowing down, transactions start to fail across the 450+ stores, the website starts to spit 500 errors what is going on?

Queue a frantic running around the office working out what was going wrong... Calls from all 3 data centres, nothing is going in or out of the network.

Notice the network admin come back to his desk, his eyebrows raise and he looks left and right before unplugging his laptop ethernet from one of the server access points

The network rushes back to life, everything is fine.

That particular network mapping tool is now banned for use on production.

This Christmas, I hereby call for a total and complete shutdown of new css/js frameworks until we can figure out what the hell is going on.

It's disheartening to see a senior member of my team shitting on the code of less mature developers. Don't just say "this is unacceptable", elaborate, teach them. How are they going to action anything from that feedback?

So where to start... Let me preface this by saying I am a Software Architect for C# and do 99% dotnet development.

I just received a phone call from our Director of Development asking me to look at adding a feature for SSO with our companies main development project, which is written in PHP. I hope I made the correct changes but since I am not a PHP dev... I am not 100% confident in my code.

Now I am writing this as we are making the deployment Friday, December 29, 2017 at 5:00 pm. I should add that I am going on vacation for the next week.

So let me summarize... I am not a PHP developer, the non-PHP developer is making PHP changes on a Friday Night, and before a long weekend and before going on vacation.

I would like to point out that I said I was not 100% comfortable with this... but well this is what they wanted. I am not even sure what really to say about this though.

I don't know why people call themselves "Developers" when they really just download a WordPress theme and adds bunch of plugins without touching a single line of code.

Hello again devRanters! This is linuxxx again. A quick update regarding the privacy site!

Right now we're up to the following:

Ewpratten
- Converting what we have right now on frontend to Bootstrap.
- Working on a page with a description as to what this is going to be exactly.

linuxxx (me)
- Converted the static stuff we used before to a simple MVC based PHP web application.
- Created a DB scheme for the custom CMS I am going to write for this.
- Starting to work on the custom CMS right now!

We'll update as soon as we've got a well working description/introduction page :)

We won't be creating rants every day/new tiny feature/change or anything but as this is our first productive night, it seemed like a nice idea to update what we already got done/started on :).

I must be dreaming .... Honestly! I am with a client that knows what he wants and has no problem to express it in clear words. They understand my tech talk and talk back in tech as well. We are on the same page regarding best practises. They envy my work and have really good ideas and express constructive criticism. What is going on here? I must be in a parallel universe or something?
Okay, one downside... Coffee is not free but a cup is 20ct, which is quite alright imho anyway. Oh, the even bigger downside... Things have been so constructive that my time there is almost over since shit got actually done in the most efficient way ever!

I had no context and spent the next 20 minutes trying to work out what folders she was on about. Turned out she wanted to know where the client side folders on our development server come from, was going to explain 'Gulp' and 'Branch' to her but I think I'd be there for the rest of the day... Why do 'tech' companies hire non-tech-savie people.

Teach people how to google properly.

May sound a bit sarcastic but I think an important part is how to look for errors on your own rather than going to the professor/TA. I’ve seen people paste in whole error logs or more often “code throws error, what do?”

At least teach in classes what to look out for like what error type in java and understanding how to look at stackoverflow questions to apply their solution to your issue.

Moral of the story: teach people how to use existing knowledge rather than just depend on someone to help their exact issue.

I'm yet to meet someone who opens links in new tabs using the mouse wheel button or Ctrl+ click.
Literally everybody I know right clicks and them clicks "open in new tab".

I have Java 8 installed on both Windows10 and Ubuntu16

My (basic) app compiles fine in windows with javac, and when put into a jar works perfectly. But when cloned to my Ubuntu, javac fails to compile, and the jar fails to run.

What I've learned so far in Ubuntu
1. Never mess with root directory
2. Never mess with scary command
3. Never install additional DEs
4. Never close terminal while something is going on

Or you have to install Ubuntu again

I didn't even know what photography is a month ago. Then I was going on a road trip with my girlfriend so I bout a camera. Didn't read the manual just watched bunch of videos and realized it was just tuning parameters. Now I'm the master.

A very dear friend decided to teach his kids programming. He has six kids but he is only teaching 3 at the moment cause the other 3 are still too young. While I choose to start off my daughter with JavaScript he choose to start off his kids with C. His reasoning is its better to learn at that level to fully understand what is actually going on. And I find myself agreeing with him.

Some random coworker has been asked to setup tests for the framework written in Java and the GUI is a web app that comes with the framework.

Since he doesn't know any language we work in, he decided he would do it in Python. When I asked him why introduce Python and he replied with "it doesnt matter which language it is because it is going to run on selenium"

I told him to either use Java or Javascript for selenium because when he leaves we should be able to maintain the tests and not first figure out what the hell you wrote in Python

He didnt understand and is going to go with Python anyway

Marketing pushed deadline for release one week earlier. That sucks.

What sucks even more is that frontend was not ready, but our frontend guy promised to take a look over the weekend and finish it. Thats cool we might make.

What sucks is that he fixed one small issue on Sunday 9PM and left the whole thing unusable.

So guess who was googling till 4am how to do stuff in bloody javascript?

In the end, I beleive I did a decent job and we ca release some kind of alpha and get rid of my dirty hacks later. That's how you get technical debt.

Management wanted us to deliver a completely new feature before the holidays (see my previous rant) and they were acting really sad when we told them it is impossible. Me: Well, it's a nigh on impossible task to ensure the exact tones and hues they send you in their photo to what you see, and likewise what you send back might look very different based on their brightness and contrast. Colour science is actually quite hard.

Wish me luck. Looks like the feature I am developing is going to be late because QA doesn't feel like following the estimates we agreed on. We already identified that development was going to be the longest part of this whole effort and that QA was going to be relatively easy, but but no. Because this is the day we have to be "code complete", they don't want to test a relatively simple feature. In fact we had to talk them into even starting testing on it today. Even though regression day is Monday and they are basically going to be done testing their last ticket this morning. Like what the fuck were they going to do for the next 7-8 hours? They don't write any documentation. There are no reports to do. There are no meetings. Did they just want a virtual day off?

Edit: they are literally playing with people's careers here. This is not the first time I have had something delayed by QA even though they agreed that it was simple to test and it was delivered with enough time to fucking test. Then I get in trouble because of late delivery.

We just entered the final sprint for the finishing of a major project. This is my first "Launch" type achievement since I started working as a programmer(I started almost exactly a year ago)

We have a lot of work done on the project, and it's very clearly near "Completion" but we all know a programmers job is never done.

But specifically I've been thinking about the code i've worked on. I've been at the burnt out phase of the development for a week now, I haven't been getting a lot done, and I can't help but stress that my code is going to be what breaks on launch day and i'm going to get canned or something...

It's not that i'm a bad programmer(at least I don't think) but more or less that I just have been so stressed I think I've made some mistakes, and I think it's going to blow up in my face, and I might lose my job over it.

It drives me Insane that AWS still doesn't support Swift 3 for iOS. We're almost to the point where Apple is going to drop Swift 2 support in XCode and Amazon STILL has not gotten it.

I've started deploying Gateway APIs in Objective-C and linking them to the bridging header just so we can finally move foreword in our company and quit relying on legacy Swift support. Which is something I was really trying to avoid because we don't like mixing languages unless absolutely necessary. It's not a problem, but it's incredibly annoying to me. What IS a problem is having to start new projects already using legacy code from the very beginning.

What is amazon going to do when the next release of XCode comes out? Tell all new customers to downgrade?

I have a client who is refusing to pay the remainder of their bill. When we last spoke 6 months ago they told me that they were traveling, had no time or capital to give me the videos so that I could finish developing the site, and that they'd contact me when they were ready to continue. Now they're angry that I contacted them for their status and say that the onus was on *me* to call them sooner.

What is everyone's opinion on the way the gaming industry is going, I mean with everything going for the 4K and all the shit that goes on between Console and PC gaming (I'm a console gamer).

And, if you are a game developer, how has this push for 4K and everything must be 3D and photo realistic effected your work?

WTF!? Is the internet is fake? What happened to the actual internet?

If you take any search phrase and search on Google or Bing you will get millions or billions or results. But if you go to the last page enough times it will drop down to a total of like 200 results. I am unsure on other search engines as they make it difficult to jump ahead in the search (only provide "next page"). I was going to the next page of results in Brave search engine and it came up with a "are you human" test. Like nobody is going to search more than a few pages. This definitely makes me feel like in am in the Truman Show.

What is the point of limiting to only a few hundred pages? Why show millions or billions for initial search? Are there any real search engines that don't filter so much? Did the technocrats burn the second great library already?

Everything comes after that...the problem with todays academics is that they are more focused on immediately deploying students to industry; theyre more focused on teaching specific frameworks and specific language instead of teaching how things work...i bet most students (at least in my country) are having troubles with endianess or encoding or even byte manipulation or what a thread is....If im going to be the teacher for example of an oop subject, ill let the student choose the language they want as long as the oop paradigm is intact ,it will be fine.. i dont friggin care whether you know vue or angular or swing if you dont even know what a callback is..

Basically, flashed arch .iso on my usb stick. After stuff was done I want to format my usb stick again so I can put files on it. Normally thats a super easy process. I tried a shitload of things.

1) On windows: Quick format -> Windows was unable to format.
2) Went to Linux. Opened GParted. Gparted didn't detect the usb drive? Wtf. Rebooted then it showed up. Tried to delete all partitions, tried to clear the entire drive. Gparted just freezes. Ok... wtf is going on?
3) Tried to go the bruteforce way and zero out the entire drive with dd. After a few seconds dd freezes and is not doing anything anymore.

Wth is going on lol? Why can I not wipe my usb drive? Any ideas?

Started taking an Angular 5 tutorial to see how things were going in the world of Angular JS. I got to say, I am impressed. It makes me think of React in a lot of ways, but with a heavy emphasis on separation of concerns. Particularly suited for those that do not like to mix views with logic. I am liking it and going at it with an open mind although React is still my preferred option. One thing that irritates me is the ammount of "plz sir, can you give code for <insert complex and heavy app that people just do not give for free>".....so annoying.

On another note, I like how Angular brings in the concept of di among other things to the table, what I am trying to get is the feeling of writing 2 apps, there is one thing to have MVC on the background, the other is to have it in the frontend! Oh well, Angular (first edition) was fun and I know it decently well, time to get cracking on more code!!

I've heard a ton of negative opinion on PHP, which I've never used, so much that if what I've heard is true I wonder why anyone would use it. I asked on dev.to whether there are any real good design ideas going into PHP and got 5 responders. They were all to the effect of "PHP is great because PHP can make websites". I think that says something about the number of good design ideas going into PHP. I'm uncomfortable forming a strong opinion on a language I've never used, but I've never seen signs this bad.

Googling for Angular (>=2) documentation and finding AngularJS instead feels like cancer.

If Google was going to "update" to what is functionally a new framework, they should've named it differently instead of trying to piggyback on the popularity of AngularJS. Sure, there's similarities, but let's be realistic here.

First there were problems with the hosting, and now the template that the client chose is no longer for sale. What would you guys do when a build (2-3 minutes) is going on?

Guys! Have you ever been so roasted with your family conversation that you are really pissed off but there's no way out. The matter of dignity you know. But guess what... The topic going on is Python! Don't need a way out🙄😛

Need advice.

So the class I TA is learning how to use heroku for website testing. It is going up on fire because of a shit tonne of errors everywhere. The professor is adamant heroku is what is used nowadays for testing (over using FTP) so we will have to help 200+ people troubleshoot without knowing much ourselves.

My question is what are some other modern website testing mechanisms? Preferably some that have retard proofing in them.

Well I was going to be productive today, but instead my partner (same project, but different section within said project) decided to question the entire premise on which the project is built, so now I have to explain why we're doing what we're doing.

I am more of a backend guy and was wondering what bullshit has been going on around Javascript, being mocked and memed around.
Then, I was asked to learn Javascript and ReactJS for front end in my project.
And then I realised, holy fucking mother of god, its fucking confusing. Whole new level shit piled right away on my face. I am newbie to front end and might be experiencing such issues, but I rarely had with other languages.

I have an interview for a Mobile Dev Trainee position with me classmates. I'm a web guy. I have no idea what has been going on with mobile dev while I was away. But this is opportunity. Halp! What to do to not screw it up? I understand the concept of making API calls somehow. Maybe, that would halp?

Around 1milion lines. Every class is a rabithole with endless depth of implements. Confusingly named classes without comments. 0 documentation. I do not see the chance of ever understanding what is actually going on. Have fun :D

They hold competitions for us each year and Im going to be on my classes web dev team as the back-end python programmer. Weve already assigned everyone to their languages and were going to study so we can be prepared.

For the competition we have a few months to work on a website that actually works, front end, back end and all. There has to be forms and maybe even signup sheets that actually work.

Its really exciting and I'm definitely going to post the adventure of programming it along the way on devRant!!
