I've never had a problem with helping junior devs but when their keyboard and mouse looks like they bought it used from a primary school - glossy and covered in food etc... All I can think is burn it..... Burn it with fire.

Today we had some presentations on a class, I was near the projector, so I volunteered to control the presentation flow.
Fast forward three teams, arrives this guy, lets his laptop and and I open it... SMELLS, FUCKING SMELLS BAD. Add to that grease and dirt all over the keyboard... I just pressed the right arrow key with the bare tip of my finger...
It's not that hard to keep your workstation clean. Most of all, odourless.4 -

Why do people insist on moving stuff on my desk!
I've very particular about my desk, have my monitors, laptop stand, stands for devices etc. setup the way I like them, and every so often someone sits at my desk when i'm not in and just shoves everything around.
Last company I worked for, I came back from holidays to a thunderbolt cable, the connector of which, had been crushed under the wheel of a chair, because someone left it on the floor.
... Is it wrong or not "proper", to send around an email saying the next person to touch my stuff gets stabbed?10 -

Sad. Got a new job. Apparently, readable code is not a priority. My suggestions were being ignored. Does the benefits of condensing an if-else to a simple one-line return statement really that hard to understand? Does making clean and readable code should be an optional thing to consider? It doesn't help that I'm the youngest, they felt like I don't have enough street cred. I'm starting to hate my job.11

The company that I currently work for has a strict clean-desk policy. So strict, there's even have a little booklet that they have about 1000 copies of lying around the office everywhere. In the booklet is a playful description (with cartoons!) of what can go wrong when sensitive information is lying around, or shared with outsiders through careless talk, etcetera. Employees are encouraged to take a copy of the booklet home.
Also in the booklet is a description of the importance of having a good password. It mentions the required minimum (x) and maximum (x+1) length of passwords, mandatory character classes, and how often the passwords have to be changed.6 -

While I was in university, I used to be a good programmer (which I still am :D ), my friends used to copy my code for the assignments. One day, the teacher (one of my my mentors) called me in his office and said, "this is your code".
I'm like, in my mind, "How did he know this?"
The teacher said, "If you let others copy your code one more time, I will fail you".
I nodded my head in affirmation.
Later I understood that I've been a "Clean code" principle follower even before I knew this term. So, it was pretty easy to differentiate my codes from my friends. The teacher is really a genius ^_^5 -

I wrote a very cleanly written program two years ago. Proper variable names, not too many, right naming, right design pattern,.. Now I come back to it and I am able to instantly figure out the code again. It only took me half a minute.
The importance of clean code... that's something the industry needs to understand more. Well, then there's the money issue. lol5 -

I love it when rather than fix the bug that is causing the faulty data you write a bot on a schedule to clean up the faulty data. It's like a bot battle who can mess up / clean up the data the fastest. Unless your clean up bot has a bug then you are just F'ed.

My first production worker script is making multiple active attribute of a user. My script should be able to deactive the old attributes if there is new one.

Let's face it: I am and will always be a tinkerer. Yes, I know my ways around, I can sneak into legacy code bases easily and throw new stuff in there, I've seen software stacks. But scarcely sound design, really modular. Even from the cleverer, experienced ones. They can master more complexity, so they can handle more spaghetti. Some essay from the 80's had this grand idea to organically 'grow' software. That's how it looks like most of the times: cancerous, parasitic super fungi (armillaria). Yeah, we all know have to fight bit-rot and entropy, but it was all lost before already. We'll never get rid of legacy protocols, legacy code.
And even when we go green field, start a fresh. Yeah, take a great design, make everything new, after some months of throwing features and outer constraints at the thing, it's the same old mud again.
But we can still dream on: some day I will design great APIs, I will have great test coverage, documentation, UML design, autometed tests, fuzzing, memchecking, I'll work professionally, clean coder style.
Pfft forget it. Maybe change for consulting, because we'll continue to dream of the 'clean' code, so you can sell the next 'recipe', development method. It's like diets. As effective. For the one selling.2 -

How do you remove oily keys on keyboard?
What I’ve tried so far are rub it using a pencil eraser and clean it using cotton with alcohol.

Teach students the importance of clean code/architecture and testing. Even if they dont yet understand the more complex topics such as architecture, they should understand why quality is important and that software is a craft more than a science. You cant just apply principle X and insert design pattern Y and profit++. You actually have to think and constantly improve. AND TEST.
Think I would probably also cover things like build automation and continuous delivery. These are now important things for junior devs to know about going into companies. -
I saw multiple attempts to convert an int to a String by concatenating it with an empty String...

(I'm guessing the compiler uses a StringBuilder here which still ends up calling Integer.toString())2 -
If your project gets fucked up beyond repair, for example by your IDE (I'm looking at you, Android Studio) try this:
0. Backup any ignored but essential files in your project (e.g. secrets) outside of your project directory.
1. Close your IDE.
2. git clean -xdf
3. Restore any backed up local files.
4. Reopen the project as a new one in your IDE.
This is awesome, because it cleans up everything non git and not committed. So any local project files configured by your IDE will be nuked, which allows for a clean start. Also, all your locally committed work is preserved.
BTW, if you really need to start over (even with git), then just remove all the things an clone the remote repo again. -

Git tip: Before doing "git clean -fd" always think twice and backup the whole folder manually before doing that. Take it from me.

I have become the only thing I always hated in a developer. Building a project without a proper documentation.
As a solo developer in a company where I have to do database architecture, front-end, back-end, testing, NETWORKING (I am the most ignorant guy when it comes to networking), product design, there is no time for documentation.
But hey, I have structured the project, files and functions (with comment, parameters type and return type) properly and I understand what I've done even after 4-5 months without touching that specific project so I got that going for me which is nice... I guess.3 -
I love having a clean, open working environment...but I hate doing the work to keep that environment maintained.1

So I just downloaded devRantron and it's great, it was so easy to install with the .deb file, the website for getting it looked very proffesional and the program itself also look very clean and overall proffesional. The only thing I wish they could have made would be for the boxes containg the rants to be wider, but overall it's amazing!5

Lumen seems to be pretty good for minimalism, but obv. doesnt provide as much as Laravel, so what do you use or do - do you each time clean out a laravel app before you start developing on it?..5

Question to all those who have worked with software architecture: What is your approach when implementing architecture and design into actual software?
I find it very hard to translate UML diagrams and architectural requirements into working code and I feel like there is quite a big "gap" between the two. How to you breach that gap and manage to maintain a clean and comprehensive architecture in your project folders?11 -

Just wanted to make a clean install on my iMac. What could possibly go wrong?!
Cleaning the hard disk was interrupted by a process running (kextcache). Catalina wouldn't install ("Incomplete systen on target device". Dropping the terminal I could somehow force unmounting and wipe the disk. Had a BSOD in between. Catalina would still not install ("Failed to install pre boot volume"). Later erasing the disk got blocked by the kernel itself. Felt like trouble and it was: Next time I was greeted with a blinking folder containing a questionmark instead of the bitten Apple.
Last resort: Internet recovery. Installing El Capitan was said to take 7 hours so I took a USB time machine backup of latest Catalina. Installed it, but on reboot it get's stuck when progress bar is at 100%. But at least I've a working recovery again. Yeah, progress!5 -
That moment you realise your desk isn't as clean as everyone else's as you can tell what keys are used by dust cover level when your stickers arrive!

From a little bit heated discussion I want to extract this: One big pain in the ass is the human to computer interface. Maybe it's the natural vs. formal language divide, but there's a mismatch deeper than between object and relational models that no ORM can failingly fix.
The whole point of the discussion was on such a point where some wanted an interface more human friendly and I stubbornly insisted on the way it is simple for the computer system. Like not too much human messiness should invade machine. One argument sounded as if human words were like unicode code points which meaning doesn't depend on its representation.
That's raising red flags to me: Nonono, natural language is too messy, keep it out. This poor machine could have been so clean and well designed and we already stacked up so much entropy we still dare to call OS,..
Dunno, what's your stance? Still hoping that your shell one day will be able to process our poor standard English? Or do you think, like me, all those failed attempts show there's a gap you should not even touch?5 -
Why do I always get the response: "just comment your code better" whenever im looking into ways to make my files smaller and more pleasant to read by abstracting big chunks into different files.
Or when i want to generate some documentation with storybooks or something.

I was looking for a RRule Generator Component in ReactJS because I (a back-end dev) am lazy af to build front-end component. It drains my energy and I stumbled upon "react-rrule-generator". And holy moly. It is no longer maintained, but it has a very beautiful code. Then I thought, I should search more open source projects where code is clean so I can learn more.
So, do any of you know any open source project, library code or whatever that you think has a very clean code?3 -

Robert Martin says in clean code, or maybe clean architecture, that one should separate the tests into what is hard and easy. GUI tests are hard and therefore brittle and so we should test against view models.

What am I missing? Are stable acceptance tests possible on the GUI? Should we test only an API?5 -

How do you handle error checking? I always feel sad after I add error checking to a code that was beautifully simple and legible before.
It still remains so but instead of each line meaning something it becomes if( call() == -1 ) return -1; or handleError() or whatever.
Same with try catch if the language supports it.
It's awful to look at.
So awful I end up evading it forever.
"Malloc can't fail right? I mean it's theoetically possible but like nah", "File open? I'm not gonna try catch that! It's a tmp file only my program uses come oooon", all these seemingly reasonable arguments cross my head and makes it hard to check the frigging errors. But then I go to sleep and I KNOW my program is not complete. It's intentionally vulnerable. Fuck.
How do you do it? Is there a magic technique or one has to reach dev nirvana to realise certain ugliness and cluttering is necessary for the greater good sometimes and no design pattern or paradigm can make it clean and complete?15 -

OK Guys I need your advice. I got an (I think it's about 8 years old) Aspire from Acer. Windows 10 is installed after upgrading from Windows 7, which was the worst decision because now it runs at speeds below good. I want to clean install a new OS. But which route to take?

What distribution? I have my knowledge in Debian. Or could I go with RemixOS because it's most user-friendly and best for work abroad? But is there an IDE for Android based distributions?

When it comes to writing comments in your code, I do quite a lot of it. Even for parts where you just need to read the code to understand what it does. However I do write very clean comments, not even snarky comments where I know someone has done something completely stupid. In my work, I generally keep it very clean. I wonder how many people write profanity, or use weird naming for functions or variables?
