Days and days, 5+ hours later I finally figured out the issue.
The client is just fucking retarded, that's all.
5+ hours of my life wasted, much awesome!9 -
I wrote a complex method for about 6 hours. Then I decided to test it via a console application...
It didnt print any output. After 2 hours of searching for errors I found the mistake: I never called the method. Guys... that's how you waste 2 hours of your life.10 -
C'mon guys! 80 hours, 70 hours, 40 hours... Are you humans or fucking robots?
Once I stayed awake 36 hours helped by energy drinks and I could barely remember my name.
I can't really imagine how somebody could write useful code with such a huge sleep deprivation.14 -
Sales guy (s) : how many hours do you think this project will take?
Developer (d) : well I guess about 250 hours
(one week later)
S: I finally sold that project
D: nice! When do we start?
S: you'll start next week and it needs to be done one month later
D: 40 hours a week, times 4 weeks for one month is roughly 160 hours
S: yes
D: but I said I needed 250 hours
S: yeah but they didn't accept that so I sold it for less
...
(and no the scope didn't adjust to the new time frame)14 -
1 hour to install Windows 10
4 hours installing windows updates
8 hours installing visual studio enterprise
*sigh*10 -
PM asks for an estimate on a bug fix, I say 2 hours, he puts down 4 hours, I finish it in 10 mins. Today was a good day :)10

12yo: omg i need to wake up in 15 hours for school, i need to get to bed asap
14yo: omg only 12 hours of sleep until i need to wake up for school, i gotta go to bed
17yo: shit just 10 hours of sleep, need to go to bed rn
19: only 8 hours of sleep until i need to wake up for college, that's more than enough
20: just 5 hours of sleep until i need to wake up for college, exactly how much i need
21: 2 hours is just fine45 -
Spent hours finding the problem in code. Suddenly something happens! Code works! Now I'm spending hours finding what made it work.3

For one small project my boss planned in about 60 hours.
Crazy that it only took me 5.5 hours. 😄
Such an extreme happened only once.4 -
We have this guy who is responsible for software testing, user support and stuff. Not a programmer but with good technical base knowledge. He was interested in writing automated tests, and I told him he might take some time to learn and help us there. In the last months I had to answer and explain a gazillion questions about our codebase and coding in general and it took me lot of time. But last week he showed me his first test suite which was actually good code and showed a lot of understanding of all aspects of this. This was more satisfying than anything on work ever.6

I left a company once. Was there with one colleague and we had this kind of code review habit that we looked at each other changes befor merging them to the deploy branch. On my last day I made a dancing cat dance in front of our app as a tiny joke for him. He instead of reviewing just pulled this time and deployed the new version on the companies dev server without a look. So the fist time the cat showed up was appareantly in the first meeting after I left and everyone went completely crazy because they thought they got hacked.
I think they never found the hidden rock roll in the app.4 -
Me : I'll make a small game in an hour or so.
12 hours later
Me: It's almost done just need to fix some collision
6 hours later
Me: Just need to fix the speed .
12 hours later
Me : ... the game, it is not finished yet ...4 -

8 hours a day too much for you??!!
My first company has "9.5 planned hours" daily
If the average is found less than the PLANNED HOURS / WEEK, the salary is DEDUCTED accordingly.7 -
Who shares this struggle?
I have a 9-5 development job and I also have a personal web application I am building and plan to bring to production.
There are simply not enough hours in the day. I struggle to find enough time to work on my personal project while still performing well at the 9-5 and spending some time with my family so I'm not absent.
Agh I wish I could pause time for productivity 😂29 -
Wrote a python script and debugged in about 3 hours. Script saves a colleague 20 hours per week. #resumeworthy9

Designing a new software product: 1000 hours
Designing a logo and picking a color scheme that pleases everyone: 689236323447876 hours1 -
It took me 18 hours to implement the design and 3 hours for the actual logic..
Damn you frontend 😪6 -
I almost gave up. I allready wrote an email to may boss, to admit my approach doesn't work, that he was right from the beginning, that i can't do it with a brunch of bash scripts, but special software has to be bought. I almost gave up. But then i just googled around a little more and found another approach to solve my problem. And it fucking worked!11

I find it annoying how Microsoft only lets you have 12 hours maximum as your active hours, I'm usually on my laptop for more that 12 hours4

Like WTF, I got reassigned to iOS development after a year being in web development and was genuinely excited to work in swift again. The excitement quickly faded away, seeing the goddamn IDE struggle to compile or run. I dont remember facing these issues in version 7 or 8. FML ;-;5 -
It took me around 10 hours, but I finally got a new feature onto my discord-bot. Best thing about it is, that I can basically transfer it onto every meme format4

Boss: Our app is to memory consuming and heavy weighted. We to do something because we will have hunsdrets of thousands of users.
Dev: Yes, there are a lot of legacy parts which leave plenty of space for optimization. Every query have to be carefully analyzed. Some can be avoided at all.
Boss: We pay externals to do some clustering with our app.5 -
Just spent 10+ hours refactoring a code, and at the end I've figure it out a one line fix to the problem... just wasted 10 hours of my life.. :)7
-
Our software needs apache, php, mysql and node of certain versions installed. This is too many dependecies for our customers.
Let's dockerize!
Now they need docker, docker-compose, make, bash and python in a certain version. What an improvement!
I mean yes but hm.10 -
"That's two weeks worth of development."
Translation: "It will take me 3 hours, the remaining one week, 6 days and 21 hours will be spent on Reddit."2 -
story points that equate to hours.

5 = 6-8 hours
8 = Kill. Me.

I startet at this company where they made a map where some locations where displayed on a map. It took like 30 seconds to load the locations - and it could only display ten at once. To cover this fact they made it impossable to zoom out...
I circumenvented their incredably bad orm and queried the DB directly, created some indices, and only shipped coordinates, type and label (whereas they shipped the whole datasets to the browser before) - and suddenly i could show all 30k
pins at once in microseconds having less traffic then before. That was quite a leap.
Needless to say the app never reached nearly production, I left the shit show soon after and the ceo is dead by now.10 -
Haha this happened to me once! But it took me a week to figure it out and after re-writing the code and hours upon hours of googling2

Me: Should be able to refactor this viewModel in a couple of hours.
Me 7 hours: Ye fuck these 28 other build errors right now.1 -
!rant I don't understand how a lot of you guys can work 10-14 hours a day! I see a lot of those messages and it makes me wonder if I am a lazy dev or something. After 8 hours of working I'm just exhausted and wanting to go home to my family :/12

If you work 8 hours a day sincerely, you will become a manager and work 12 hours a day
Made my day...hahahahah -

Feck I hate public transports. Rude people everywhere.
When the train arrives, everybody is pushing themselves at the door, not letting people stepping outside properly, then they lay their filthy shoes on the seats, contributing to the cancerness of the place, they cackle like hens, so I have to put super high volume on my headset, bringing some dark looks from other peasants because I listen to metal, but fuck them, and when finally you arrive, with nearly all the people standing up since 15 minutes ago because they want to go off first, some fucker in front of you steps down, with his luggage, and STOPS right there to open his handle so you're sure to bump in his ass, he turns to you expecting YOU to apologize when the fucker took the whole place for himself, I give him a mean look with my metal chaos pissing from my ears, and venture off to bump in a girl who was standing in the FUCKING way again checking out where she had to go. ARGH.7 -

I worked once in a company which had this tourist app which should show places on map of the city. Unfortunately it slowed the App down to load more then a couple of places. Their solution was to limit the number of loaded places to teb and prohibited zomming out. I made it handle thousands of places at the same time. Main reason for the Performance issue was, that they sent all data they had about places big, big json objects with large text blobs) to the frontend. This part was easy, I instead sent only the data needed for the map like coordinates and icon type obviously. But still the backend struggeled hard with many objects from the DB, because they built a really shitty orm or what ever this was supposed to be: every line of data retrieved from the DB was immideatly wrapped in some class wich direved from another class which had some magic methods in it which caused some absurd loops over all other obejcts and even more DB queries in unexpected moments and also in the fucking constructor. So it turrned out that the map issue was only the top of the iceberg, since using any data from the DB was extremely expensive. The hard part was to understand the insaness of this abnormination and find the bottlenecks.7

Dear enployer, how do you expect me to develop for mobile devices without provding fucking WiFi in the office. All the nice gadgets you have given me, are worthless because you can only plug one thing into it at one time - the lan-dongle Xor the fucking macbook you need for remote debugging. Nice.

I recently learnt that even chrome and Firefox use Webkit instead of their own engines in the iPad, because Apple requires so. So you can not use any alternative browser. You can not install oder versions of Safari as well. You can not open any browser-console or whatever. What the serious fuck.
I've hated Apple for my life but now I have even reasons!4 -
Returned from holiday. Got a Ticket that literally reads: "I commited some stuff to master. Some are quick and dirty fixes. Please Review."
I called him and was told he made some architectural changes without talking to anyone (again) and now the tests are broken and I shall repair them.
Dear colleague. ARE YOU FUCKING SERIOUS?!!!
Rage is beyond imaginable.7 -
That feeling you get when you write an automation package on top of selenium and python that at a press of a button runs through an entire User Checkout process 😍

Guy talking to Boss a month later:
Guy: There is no perspektiveeeee. I want to leaeaeaead! I want responsibilitiiiiiii.

They: You got the job! Du you acceppt?
Me: Let me think about it. Do you know what would help me deciding? Knowing if i could get 15% more.
They: We will check and let you know.

The cool little startup that hired you right out of college/university, that promised your work will be recognized and well compensated?
Well, they'll end up complaining on why you don't work more than 60 hours a week on shit pay, force you to work at the "office" (read here one of the partner's basement), and retain your vacation pay from your last paycheck. That's not cool and also illegal here.
It's been 10 years and it still infuriates me when I think about it.4 -
Some years ago i attended to a summer school abroad. I instantly built a connecection with this one girl, we spend the whole week together, talking, sharing humor, deep conversations etc. We also won the prize for the best project together. I guess it looked like the beginning of a love story for the rest of the course. For me it didn't exactly, actually I didn't had much romantic feelings for her; she was the arrogant, manipulative type I thought I could handle a friend but never as girl friend. We shared some darkness so to say. But I really hoped for a new close friendship. Since she had a boyfriend back home i thought she most likely wanted just the same. Anyway I was a bit worried she might want more because she made me quite a lot of compliments and told me how she liked me.
And yes, she wanted more: Whenever we talked on the phone after the summer school or met (she lived in a city not far away from mine by coincidence) she begged me for help with coding. She had a well paid as extremely interesting PHD position with a topic between political science and computer science. Besides classical humanities methods her topic would require a lot of coding though. But she had zero, absolutely zero clue of programming, and, as it turned out, zero interesst. I told her from the beginning she would have to learn quite a lot or pay someone to code for her. It was far too much to do as a favour by a friends or such. And, since it was part of her fucking PHD it would have been cheating somehow of she didn't do it herself. But instead, she kept texting me if I could 'help to fix some bugs', sending me unrelated code fragments she copied from SO and not even tried to understand. So I told her to fuck off at one point. After all it was not that we have been friends for decades; we only knew each other for a couple of months an spent only one week together. So thats it.
But I still think of it from time to time and it makes me angry because it feels like she was only nice to me because she thought i am this nerd guy who falls instantly in love to a charming good looking girl and does everything for her. I did neither at all but indeed wanted to be friends with her, thats bad enough. It even makes me more more angry that she actually has this awesome PHD project about politics in the fucking digital world and think of programmers like this. And that she will succeed without understanding anything bacause in the end there would have been a dude who did all the work for her I bet.8 -

This is a short tale that can be summed up as "oh fuck meee".
After finishing an API the night before I settled in for a day of bug fixes and tidy ups. Until slack went off.
The front end dev was getting an error, a code breaking error. After doing the standard process of request checking i went okay must be me. I find the script that is has the error and the line that it is failing at.
Que 2 hours of the full cycle of anger, sadness, pleading, and finally acepting that it had finally happened I had gone insane. The code was to documentation best practise correct and it still had the same error.
I the cheaked the DB on a whim and I found that my code was not wrong and it was doing exactly what I wanted the data however had a single record that was old and the schema had change juuussstt enoigh to break everything at that record. One 3 secound deletion later code ran perfectly.2 -

I don't want a personal assitant who helps me to google. I don't need a program that writes text for me. I don't need an AI wich invents cooking recipes. Or discovers new music for me. Or plays my virtual girlfriend. All of this is shit. It's giving away the parts of life which are actually fun.
I need a robot that cleans up my fucking flat, clean the fucking dishes, and buys fucking grocerys while being cheaper and socially and environmentally better that paying some humans.19 -
(This happened a few days ago:)
First day on the job, last session of debriefing, HR comes to explain us some company policies.
Among them, they want us to fill in our working hours using a smartphone app (Android & iOS only).
I raise my hand and I ask them what can I do, since I have a Windows Phone.
HR lady's face is striken with sheer terror. Since then, I'm known as the "Windows Phone Guy"... 😁
I'm more than proud of myself. 🙂
P.S. We also got some cool Windows tablet to use during our training period...5 -

I love to sleep, but once I stayed almost 26 hours making a front-end design as a test to enter to a company in Brasil. And here I am. Worth it.
BTW, I completed the test in 9 hours, I'm just adding more hours as everyone here hahaha. I stayed awake for 26 hours but had a normal day. Does it count? -

Question: What is the fuckiest fuckup?
A) That it turrned out our apps login does not work on Safari at all? Although Safari should be Webkit and App works fine on Chrome and Firefox for years and should be normal Angular stuff by the way?
B) That in three years appareantly nobody considered trying it out in Safari?
C) That I can not use the iPad I got from my employer because fucking AppleId is requiring a fucking Phone number.
Answer: all of them.10 -
Smartphones ruined social media. msn, yahoo, ICQ, even Facebook for some years - i loved them before. When you felt lonely you just looked who was online from your list and said hello and chat a bit because most likely the person sat in front of his or her PC and had time. At least it was indicated by the online status. I miss this feeling sometimes very much.
Now that everyone is online all the time this is gone. Among grown ups you only write someone if you have something important to say like setting up a date or what, and among the younger you send only memes. And even if you start a conversation you don't (and can't) expect a real time answer but see it as so called async comversation.random the good old times old mans complains blame it on the media i did not always hate social media5 -
Just spent literally six hours trying to get my aunt's enterprise-grade 20 mb fiber optic Internet back on tracks.
Two hours trying to reach the technical support, two hours to explain that I was "unexpectedly" hung up by the previous attendant, and honest to hell, two more hours trying to explain what "latency" is.
Seriously, how much do they pay these technicians nowadays?4 -
FUUUUUUUUUUCK FUCK FUCK FUUUUUUUUUUCK ! Sorry I needed to let this out. I make extra hours since a few weeks and this only because 1. I'm the only dev of the team (will seriously need more people). 2. I have to manage people remotely which, as a 3 years old experienced dev, is not what I expect of my job. 3. I need to finish the job of an intern (not even her fault but de was asked to make powerpoints and stuffs instead of working on the module we need).
And today we just asked me if I can work on saturday. NO. I love (or used to?) my job but this can't last for ever.2 -

I have been working on this software for 3 years now. The code base was a working prototype made by my boss before I came, not more, not less. Php + Angular. Have been refactoring a lot, backend is backed with hundreds of tests now, frontend still lacks a lot. Still a lot of programm structures are still the same weird ones my boss once created in a rush between two meetings while learning Angular to get the prototype finished. Now it's used in production which makes hard to refactor, because we have to maintain backwards compatibility. Neither the parts I added or refactored completely are satisfying, because they are built on this structures, because i never got any feedback for anything I decided and because I changed my own paradigms over time.
So I am all alone on this project. All genuinly new projects are assigned to the new team members (i was the first one, no we are five plus my boss) because I wont have time, have to maintain the old one. So I never can do something new which is quite frustrating.
I did a little side tool, the only thing I invented and did completely by myself in our repertoire - and now some stakeholder shows big interest onto this. Instead of giving me the task to make a real project from this my boss wants to give it to them to develop it. Why? Because I need more time for the main application.
Also the more the software is used the more bug tickets and feature requests come. I was crying for help for months but the others had appareantly more important stuff to do.
This might be true to some extend. Yesterday we had some kind of crisis meeting and my boss wanted again to assing pur junior to help me, who has a shit load of other things to do and is a student. I insisted that this would not be enough, and one of the fulltime devs has to get involved because the thing is our core application and I am only part time btw. So my boss said we wont decide today but one of them should do it. They should have some time to figure out who which is understandable but it's not that I didn't keep saying this for months. Now they are all like whimp whimp when I have to do php i will quit. The new projects are all typescript, with node backend if any. But alas, one of them even said yesterday he doesn't want to do js anymore. Okay... but... this is our tech stack then get another job allready?
And I should do the same probably. But then again I feel very sorry for my boss who helped me in very dark times of corona and more. If both of us leave, the project he worked on for decade (including convincing poeole, collect money..) might be suddenly at it's end while he is so exited about it's access today...
I also get insecure if it's really that they hate php so much or that they don't want to work with me personally because maybe I am a bad team Player or what?
I experienced the same at my old workplace, got left alone with big parts of the project because they didn't want to do php and js in this case and it ended up five devs doing the python backend and me doing the frontend and the php cms part all alone. Then I quit and now everything seems to happen again.
And then again I think I am only fucked up so hard by this stuff because I do not really like being a developer at all. I only do it for the money and because I am good at it (at least i think so. Nobody ever bothers to ever to read my code and give me feedback, because you know, php and js). So I guess I would hate any other job in the field maybe likewise?
This job *is* convinient, salary, office
position, flexibility could not be better. At the end of the day it's not that stressfull. And i don't have any second of freetime (due to family) or energy i could offer a new and more demanding employer, can't work over time or even take a fulltime position, can't home office, can't earn less, can't travel very long to the office and especially can't go back to school to learn something completely new. Some of these constraints are softwe then other naturally but still my posibilities at the Moment are very limited. That might change in about five years if the family situation changed. So it would most likely be reasonable to stay until then at my current job? And bear being alone with this app, don't getting involved on any new project, don't learn anything new, don't invent anything.
There was one potential way out, they considered offering me PHD position to the upcoming ml part of the project... But I learned that I would attend to a bunch of classes at university first, which i would like to, but I don't think i have the time.
I feel trapped somehow. I also feel very lonely in the Office because those fucktards keep saying in home office.
Man, I don't want to go to work today.6 -
Colleague: implements stuff and it works.
Boss: i have a good idea how to make it different and better.
Me: idea sounds neat but what colleague did works 100% fine. We shouldn't waste time for changing a running system.
Other_collegue: i have implented it like boss said in project 2.
Boss: they shouldn't be different.
Me (being the one to decide here) : come on okay then, let's do it like they say.
colleague: implements it like they said.
Months: pass by.
Today I have realized that the former solution is way better. I am so sorry, colleague, that i didn't stood up more for your solution.3 -

I did that for about 3 months, afterwards I luckily had no classes left.
Only, the thesis is still open. But on the other hand, the freelance work for the startup was a pretty good reference for scoring an actual, well-paid position which made me leave my old job as well as freelancing.
Now I work roughly 40 hours a week with nearly as much freedom as a freelancer but less paperwork.3 -

The unused apps: all default apps which can't be uninstalled only deactivated.
Do you notice something, phone?2 -
I updated Linux on my private pc to new major and literally everything broke like it was 2006. I was surprised because i hadn't this for ages but not even mad - because i knew it would be fixable. It took me 1 hour, than everything was okay again. I wish the fixability in crisis in my relationship was as reliable. Maybe I should marry Linux instead.13

When you spend hours working on something, finally look at the fruits of your efforts and think 'what the hell is this?'. Delete. Start again. Repeat in five hours.1

Is it normal to have to sit in hours upon hours of handover sessions for a spaghetti software solution?
There's no documentation, we have to create it, hence the hours upon hours of handover sessions.
I'm so fucking burned out from the past two weeks' meetings.4 -
Software runs fine on several in-house instances. First time customers hosting it themselves. Runs fine. Users start using. Server need absurdly high processing power and fucks up. I can not access customers Server to debug. Only hope, get copy of their images to reproduce their setup. And have *** one single fucking hour *** to go into it before having to tell in emergency meeting if we can fix it or they would blew the project.
I didn't expect, but found the cause, a single very badly written query. Written by myself years ago I have to admit.
They also gave me one hour to produce a patch. I did but but lost so many hair.4 -
They sent me fake mails saying my provider will shut down my domains when i don't pay. Of course I ignored the shady link. But when the day which they announced came, the domain was unreachable indeed. How?!
After a reboot of the server everything works again. But they must have had either access to my server or shat it down with a ddos attack or something. I have no idea whats going on. Shit.5 -
Anyone had this been there - done that moment?
You know when you are developing a web app, you start and then after a while end up wasting hours on just which color to use in UI!!7 -

Dear php. You weren't my first one. But you were my first serious one. The first i made money with. We had a great time together until ajax came. Do you remember? I did more and more with js later but you still where my main. You even exposed your source code to me. Time changed. They started to hate you. And yes, they where right in some points. But they never saw your good sides. I saw them. I stood with you. But i was froced to wrote backends in typescript, in Java. And you know what: i didn't feel so bad. For gods sake, I fucking enjoyed it, php!
When did we become so alienated? When did I staet to write my dayly heller scripts in bash instead of you?
Yes, you improved. Hack came, than php7, php8. You archived a lot. You finally brought types. There was a time when I thought everything that stood between us will be overcome. That we will be together forever.
But recently i had this conversation on DevRant with nmeri and did some research afterwards. And I learned, maybe you will never have generics. It just don't work out, php, I am sorry. It's not your fault, it's mine. But i dont think i can live without a proper type system for the rest of my life. Not after i taszed those other languages.
I don't know when it will happen. When i switch projects this summer maybe. Maybe next year, when i start a new job. Who knows. But it will happen: you won't be my main anymore at one point. Maybe we can stay friends but i want you to know, that i am open for something new in my life. Something with generics.4 -

So out of curiosity, does anyone here with a computer science degree actually use any of the non-programming classes you had to take for your degree?
All those damn hours studying calculus and discrete math (ugh, I hated induction).. Not to mention biology, organic chem, history... Ugh11 -
Pseudo-flexible working hours suck. I get the "choice" to start work between 7:30-9:30 AM. I'm a night owl so waking up at 6AM is not an option. Why can't they just allow to start at 10AM and finish at 6:30PM? Between 7:30 & 9:30 is peak rush hour and I'm bound to lose 1h30 in traffic for 30km (normally it would take half an hour) and start my workday pissed off.6
-
Anyone else find they work better between the hours of say 10am - 2am rather than the "normal office hours" of 9am - 5pm?
The problem is if I start later then the people who I work with are so absorbed in their work that I don't receive a reply to my email.1 -
How many hours of actual productive work do you devs average a day? Honestly, I think I average about 2 hours of honest, good work in my 8 hour day. Between random meaningless meetings that could be emailed out or just daily distractions (coworkers chatting, my phone, etc). Am I alone in this?8
-
I have a friend who does crypto shit. Apart from that he's a great guy. But the crypto shit. I haven't had contact for over a year bc whenever I open the chat I see his last message, that I should stake my money in his etherium node or whatever bs and don't know what to write anymore :/3

When you mumble to yourself 'I don't get it' because you don't get why it fails, and it fails because you didn't use the get function, than you where suprisingly right, but you didn't got it.4

I don't like many sudden unplanned meetings appearing during your estimated development hours. It consumes some development time and destroys your momentum.
We follow the 2 weeks sprint that contains sprint ceremonies like sprint planning, demo, retro, daily stand ups and backlog grooming meetings. My capacity should be less then 80 hours since there are sprint ceremonies and unplanned meetings that happen during development hours. Unfortunately, my capacity is still set to 80 hours and meetings hours are not deducted. This puts me to a disadvantage as I need to do unpaid OT/weekend work just to make up for the lost time consumed by meetings.
Those 1 hour/30 minutes meeting piles up thus consuming development work hours. So a simple example is that you have 32 hours estimated to finish a big user story but sudden unplanned meetings and sprint ceremony meetings will consume some of that 32 hours. I will bring this up in our next retrospective meeting.12 -
Do you have this culture at the office where your employer (management) try to shame you if you leave at the normal hour? How do you deal with it?
If you work in France I would like to know what's your work schedule, because I'm in a startup and everyone stay there until 18pm.13 -

"Active hours can be set between 1 and 12 hours."

I just spent 4 (four) hours debugging why my perlin noise used the same gradient for every point. Turns out I forgot to assign the seed for the random generator so it defaulted to 0. (I seed it every round with the map seed and coordinates so I don't have to store anything for visited regions)

Lol so we had a meeting where basically the entire dev team got shat on for everything always taking too long... Now, I know a .lot of us suck at estimates but if it's all the time then do you think maybe we're not getting the best quality info to wok from?
Then they revised the WFH policy to 3 days a week in office. AND got pissy about the hours.
so I ask you all what are you hours?18 -

How to reproduce:
- have a single login form for admins and ordinary users
- add a second button right next to 'login' which reads 'login as admin' in order to have a separate login for them
- release a new version of software with this change solely and changelog informing about it
- have customers admin tell you everybody is complaining about not being able to login with thwor admin accounts5 -

Should I change my Job?
# Pro current job
- extremly convinient in terms of family compatibility
- low stress
- awesome boss
- I worked on this software for years and can see it gaining maturity
- can not complain about salary
# Contra current job
- always the same boring tech stack, little development as programmer and none beyond that
- I can't see any greater good or social added value in what I do!
- small team and very little opportunities to meat new poeple from other departements or what
- colleagues are okay but conservative and boring, also they do a lot of wfh (take in consideration i am rather extrovert so this is an issue)
- no work trips (see above)18 -
Recent signs for hating my self.

I had this boss once who called himself a sitting bull sometimes. He was about 60, an absolute dictator, strong right wing and building an aura of fear around him. He had this emberassing macho attitude which was especially delicate since he was a protective of the female ceo. He talked to everyone, colleagues, customers, partners like they where enemys and was extemely aggressive towards everyone. Meetings where extremly emberassing because he insulted everyone (except us devs), talked much bs an didn't let anyone else speak - including customers.
He was also paranoid af. Once he talked the ceo into firing a team lead he disliked. Before the guy got to know this, he called me, and wanted me to sneak in his office, copy everything from his computer in case he would destroy everything when I realized he's fired. As if everything relevant wasn't on GitHub anyway and is if the poor guy would be uprofessional as sitting bull.
The sitting bull lead the department like a ponzi scheme: He required constantly new projects with funding for some years to maintain the old ones and their piles of tech debt. Dev team grew and grew but every insider knew the bubble will explode at one point. One of the last projects was a partner project with another institution. Naturally he didn't want us to do anything for this project but use our man power to rescue older ones. One pm guy was employed fifty percent as ours and fifty at the partner. So while months passt by and we delivered absolute nothing but lame excuses, his other employer started to ask questions. At one point I told him, and told his other employer afterwards, that the sitting bull never intended to anything for the project. When the sitting bull learned the pm. Guy told them the truth he called him a traitor and fired him instantly.
I left shortly after and the bubble imploded eventually. The sitting bull retired after an heart attack. From over twenty dev positions a single one remains and his main job to shit down one broken service after another...3 -

I am 100% okay with both options but i want some clarity ffs. I am waiting to know how it continues for almost two years now. I hope they decide soon at least.4 -
My manager is making my team fill the tasks' "completed work" field in TFS with the exact same amount of hours we were inside the company. Currently, I refactor some code in a private project at home. Yesterday I ran tests and some things didn't work I thought I already fixed. After I fixed them other things were broke and again errors felt familiar. With every fix and every new error I was more and more sure, I already did exactly the same things before. I thought, maybe it is a Déjà-vu or I dreamed about that.
After two hours, when everything was working again, I realized I did all this two nights before in a branch and totally forgot about it.
I wasn't even drunk -.-' -

I worked directly in my Github repo folder while working on a project (don't ask me why). I did my initial commit with all my code from the start until 5 hours ago. I never pushed.. A minute ago, I checked my commit and noticed that there were DB credentials in one of the files. So.. Smart me.. "revert commit"..
Result. Everything got deleted except my node_modules folder and the readme file.. I lost everything.. Fuck me, I'm going home..
Please, someone.. Can I get these files back via git or something? Can't find anything in in the history..9 -
More then ten years ago, as a student, I made a website as freelance job. Customer was a friend of my father, old, artist, digital illiterate af. Money was okay when I had none but as you can imagine not much actually.
Guy has no idea about domains, hosting etc. So to keep things simple I hosted the site on my webspace (which i needed anyway back than), I made it with Wordpress because it looked that he wants to add content from time to time.
He never did and surely forgot about the possibility.
I still host the site, although it's the only thing on the webspace meanwhile. When it goes down, guy calls me, so he actually is aware of his site. I don't mind the 1.5€ a month much, but Hoster or fucking Wordpress needs attention from time to time and this is annoying. Updates and stuff. Surely I could turn it into a static site, to minimize the work, but this would take effort too.
I could (and should) charge him, but i am much to expensive nowadays. Just cancel the site? I feel sorry for the guy and that's It's somehow my fault that i didn't inform him properly that a site need maintenance as well. I was not so much of a beginner anymore back than and wonder why i did this mistake, maybe i had just other stuff in my mind (girls most likely) and wanted to finish it asap or I don't know.
So i sit here an update Wordpress once more wondering if my decade old templates will still work.12 -

I had a job opportunity with okayish maybe good job and more money. Last november. But i had a bad feeling somehow. I told my boss and he said he will try to get a raise for me of i stayed, so I stayed. He wrote some stuff so mgmt to hopefully get my raise.
Meanwhile super important project took place. I have to meet deadline, this friday. Was somewhat motivated, did a lot of overtime.
Today mgmt responded, raise denied. Because i can not prove i have an open opportunity with that salary. No shit after it took them two months!
And the day after tomorrow is the deadline. Bad timing, suckers, bad, bad timing. I will deliver what i have regardless how buggy tomorrow and take friday off.2 -

Finished my first freelance web project today. Spent 11 hours coding it. Another 10 hours trying to get it to work on the browser.

Its midnight here...worked for almost 12 hours.... Spend the last 30 mins or so very frustrated and try to figure out why I am not getting desired response. Edited the code again and again... The only valuable life lesson I have ever gotten and I could give is 'fake it till you make it'. Doesn't it begin by playing an adult as a child? It's the same throughout whole life: Whenever they think you are good at something they will give you chances to actually do it and practice it. Regardless of we are speaking about sports at school (where they have to think you are good enough to give you the ball from time to time so you can even learn the game) or getting laid, or whatever job you are going to have: you have to fake some competence at first to get a chance to even try it. The key to success is to have a good feeling of how much fake is appropriate in which situation.
A lot of ppl in their early twenties and below think ppl are getting something they call mature or professional (when speaking about work) at one point in life. When they grow older and don't feel mature or prefessional at all but has to act as if they where, they feel like an imposter. But lemme tell you, now that I have to do with literal professors and other successful ppl: behind the scenes it's all the same fights and fears, the same anger and the craving for approval and friends hip, the same teaming IP and intrigues between them like between you and your mates back then on the playground.
At the latest when it comes to parenthood, you realize it. you got thrown into this huge quest with a shitload of responsibility and unnumbered side quests without any chance to be prepared and the same happened to your parents and theirs and to all the other parents you now are used to meet, back at the playground. All they can do is trying there best and keep a professional face. although some will tell you they are better at parenting bc they have have always the right size of diapers with them they are amateurs (or imposters if you want it) like you. Like your parents when you looked up to them pretending to know what they do. In fact, nobody knows. Maturity is a lie. Professionalism a fake. We stay always the same children playing in the sand we used to be. We only got better in playing adults.
So what now is imposter syndrome? Just another way modern society invented to hate yourself for being human.
That's it. Thats all I can tell about life after i survived the first half. I gave it all to you devrant, thank you for your attention, now get of my lawn.5 -

3 hours a day of uninterrupted dev time, 4 days a week (~12 hours a week).
So when I say the project will take 24 hours, it is about two weeks worth of work.2 -
You deliver a new feature. After the functionality, how do you prioritize?
- having clear variable- and function names
- having meaningful and orthographically and grammatically spelled commit messages
- having a clean commit history
- having perfect linted syntax
- having it covered with unit-tests
- having a wonderful documentation6 -
It's hard enough to survive a whole work-week on 1-3 hours of non-deep sleep per night.
Being away from home for roughly 12 hours a day; only working about 8 on the clock, and still being on standby after hours.
Now you expect me to count all those hours? I'm too tired for that, haha :p -
You have to modify an old crap software in php.
2 hours to change the codes
2 hours to test the changes with selenium test3 -
I use Debian btw.
Srsly I used it on every woking and private maschine and every server where I had the choice, even in most docker containers for over ten years. And I can hardly complain. Problems occur very seldom and are always fixable. Everything I need works just fine (execept for PS, but no distro could aolve this). I have literally zero incentive to try other distros because Debian just does it for me.
Sometimes I wonder though if something is wrong with me? Is it Stockholm snydrome? Am i missing something inportant? Because everyone seems to struggle constantly with the question of distribution.
Whatever. At least I struggle with the question of which Desktop to use because everyone available sucks.4 -
Friday is always such a significant day because you know what's up next? WEEKEND BABY but I am up since 4am after four hours of sleep (it's 5am now), because well life sometimes sucks like that, and the only thing keeping my brain from going gaga is work so I am working since 4am to probably 7,8pm
Fml and wish me luck8 -
spending hours debugging, hours looking at the error without realizing it is the one =.=
thank god just realize that now -
Question for database gurus:
I need to save the openig hours of my clients in a database. Each day should have different opening hours and also the possibility for 2 breaks during the opening hours. There should also be an option for different local holidays for each client.
How to I acomplish this in a clean/performant/scalable way? Thank you for your answers!10 -

Learning what it needs to debug a Safari-only bug (a lot of money).

Getting in touch with CyPress and after initial rejection seeing how it's concepts are actually brillant. -
The removal of an always visible list of active windows in Gnome3 is the most useless decision ever. Now I have an emtpy black bar above the screen, and can not see which windows are in background there anymore. How is this vast waste of screensize supposed to better than a normal windowlist?
Yes I am aware of the plugin, but it's a second bar then while the first is still uselessly empty. Also it's so crippling ugly that you can't just use it without some extensive manual css adjustments.
Why I just don't use one of those plenty beautiful other Linux desktops, you ask? It's because I hate myself so much.3 -
Sinners, hear my voice!
When you rewrite observable hell as promise hell - it's still hell.
When you rewrite promise hell as callback hell - it's still hell.
There is no redemption. No deliverance. No escape from hell. You will atone for your sins one way or the other.4 -
After some joyful years with typescript i learned that my major code base didn't use strict mode. I changed and now i feel i don't know typescript at all. Some things get irritatingly complicated now although it's even more resilient now for sure. I am not sure how to feel about it. So to the typescript out there: Do you use strict? A custom set of rules?6

There is so much potential of funding a startup at my work atm. We develop an open source software which will be used on several public institiutions in several countries soon. At least in one country they will be forced by law to do so. One could earn so much money by offering help desk Support, data protection legal stuff, hosting etc. for said software because we do not even have a concept nor a single position for such things. Or develop plugins and stuff for special needs. So much money. But funding a startup, actually get those fundings etc. is much work also. I am too lazy.2

I've recently been promoted and I'm going from hourly to salaried. Amidst this crisis and the promotion I've gotten lost in the big changes and forgot to ask the simple questions.
When tf do I leave work if I'm not tracking my hours anymore? (Or for the near future, log off of work)
I know the general consensus is "when the work is done", but we all know the work is never truly done5 -
How many hours do you really work during your current 8 hours day? Personally I'm waisting at least 2 hours doing non work related stuff :)3

My boss told me that he wants me to switch projects soon and I am not sure how to feel about.
Old project
- have been working on it for four years, mostly alone, sometimes with others
- i am more or less product owner and make most of the technical decisions
- i assign tickets to other when they get assigned to help me
- i inherited the code base and refactored a lot. Some parts i am proud of, others are a mess and others aren't touched by me at all
- one of my helpers would take this
New project
- kind of data science plattform, so I have to learn a lot in this direction. Will be very complicated though.
- my first big greenfield project actually
- i will be mostly alone with this
- tech stack is fixed; no more php.3 -
Why am I still using Apache? Must be some kind of Stockholm Syndrome. mod_rewrite is literally the worst. After all those years it still suprises with some shitty behaviour. Hate hate and hate and hate again!1

How much time do you actually spend working?
I personally work 10 hours per week at my job. The rest of the time I watch YouTube or something like that. I have massive quilt because of this, but everyone is happy with my work.7 -
He said there is new bunch of testing frameworks, better then the old ones. Cypress he said. Testcafé he said. Angular is not tied to protractor anymore he said.
Than he was torn to another project and Horus took over his tests. Guess what? The syntax is slightly differenr, but when I experienced you produce the very same problems as with every other framework: Bad selectors. Using sleep instead of expected conditions. Tests Interferon with each other. He is a newbie so ok he dies not know shit. But I have to repair this shit now and learn a new framework for that while very experienced with selenium. But at least we use the newest shit now. Fml.1 -
What's your ideal and current work time?
How many hours do you work per day and when do you start?
And what days you are mostly off?9 -
Fellas, how many hours of work a day would you consider optimal?
Anything beyond 10 hours and I feel quite exhausted.6 -
Slept for 4 hours after 10 hours programming session and I still feel pretty good.
Does that mean that code == rest? Woops!1 -
Worked for a couple of years at this company.
I have been set to solve some of the most excruciating issues (that nobody even wanted to hear about) in regards to many technologies.
This has resulted in little development experience, a lot of frustrations (even damage to my health), and low performance (at least from the manager's perspective)
Now I have to learn another useless technology and then maybe I will be allowed to continue working there - BUT at least this one is will allow me to do actual development.
What would you do? Stay or find another job?
To me it feels that this is not what a future hopefully competent developer should be doing.6 -
Making a balance need some wisdom to make it happen. Make a time recipe for everything. 8 hours dev, 4 hours spent with family, 8 hours sleeping etc.1

If I work at home this weekend to get some undersized stuff done by monday . Should I ask them to pay me extra?
Or we devs do not have those privileges?1 -
I want to build a "report-error" function into the app to make errors in production easier to track and debug. But i am unsure, what it should do actually.
Create a GitHub Issue? Then every Hoster needs a specific GitHub account and repo for that.
Send an Email? Then connectivity-related issues are not sendable. Send an Email with the frontend? Brr. Any Tips?16 -
Dude ist sysadmin at server Pool hosting our app for the client.
Client: something minor is not working.
Dude: Let me just restart app, works at my windows laptop everytime or whatever.
*restarts app, hangs on entrypoint*
Dude: Dear client it's brocken.
Clients: *calls us in panic.*
Horus: Dear dude, when it hangs on startup consider to download an update because we fixed some issues with in theis area recently. Also maybe enlarge the docker compose timeout.
Dude: Still does not start up.
Horus: ok just call me on this Zoom link, then we can debug together.
Dude:...

Dude: oh i just saw it did startup mean while, it just took some time.
Fuck you dude, and your impatience!1 -
Having a look at honeypot.io. Since i am not very familiar with that terminology, especially in english, what is the difference between a 'tech lead' and 'engeneering manager'?5

What is the general rule/idea around meetings outside of your work hours?
It has happened several times that I wasn't able to join some meetings that were outside of my work hours. I try to join but some thing or the other comes up and then I miss it. I make sure to join any meeting that's highly important or if it's about anything related to my work (or if I'm required to attend).
I work with people in different time zones and there was a meeting set after 8:30pm my time, and I wasn't able to join. My coworker messaged me, in a passive aggressive way (seemingly), asking if he needs to remind me before every meeting in my calendar so that I would join.
I feel like I'm not being paid enough for the work that I do, and I work around 8-9 hours (sometimes 10 and I don't get paid for overtime).
On top of that, am I obligated to attend every meeting and not have anything planned or unplanned to do after work hours? (I don't think I should have any obligation)
I don't have previous experience of working with international teams/clients before, so I'm not sure what I should do here.9 -
Are you an off-shore contractor working for a US company? How do you really feel about working US Hours?
I have several contractors on my team who say "I'm willing to work any shift" but I need you to be honest with me on devRant... how do you really feel? Do you have families? Do you prefer to work your normal hours? Why do all of my contractors martyr themselves to work whenever they think makes me happy?
I can work around your requests, I'd probably get better work if you're happier and well rested. I'm not sure what I'm missing, are these hours actually better for you and your family?2 -
An intern wrote down in their timesheet:
Monday, 3 hours, "going over git commands to push code to <branch>"
3 hours my ass6 -
I spent hours trying to figure out why a specific library couldn't be found on my system. I finally tore apart the ./configure script to no avail. I did a full text search of the source code and found a `config.log` file mentioning it was having trouble with a sub-dependency. I had failed to install OpenSSL.
