Today history was made, I was able to actually write code for almost 5 hours today at work without being interrupted!5
-
Sometimes I think we developers are pretty arrogant.
And after 2 hours in work I recognize everyone else is so fucking stupid9 -
“My Boss arrived at work in a brand new Ferrari.
I told him: “Wow that’s a nice car”.
He replied:
“If you work hard, put all your hours in, and strive for ''Excellence'', I'll get another one next year”.”

My boss arrived at work in a brand-new Lamborghini. • r/Jokes3 -
Spent hours finding the problem in code. Suddenly something happens! Code works! Now I'm spending hours finding what made it work.3
-
Whenever you figure out an incredibly simple solution to make your code work after being frustrated by it for hours on end.3
-
I love coming home from classes to get some work done on my setup.
My thought is; if I'm going to be sitting here for hours at a time working, may as well make it a comfortable environment.45 -
Free time... sometimes I want to program, learn new stuff and work on personal projects, but sometimes I just want to be a couch potato and play hours and hours of video games...4
-
09:00 : 8 hours of sleep is perfect. I'll sleep at 10.
10:00 : Ah, I am still young, I don't that much sleep yet. 7 hours should do.
11:00 : 6 hour is the limit. I must sleep at least 6 hours to work properly tomorrow.
12:00 : Aw, fuck this :(
Next day at work: 10 cups of coffee2 -
I spend over 3 hours thinking why my code doesn't work. It turns out you need to attach the code to the game object. Who would have known...........10
-
Technical Founder at today's meeting: "All of you guys have work-life balance. It shouldn't be like that. We need act like a startup. You guys need to work really hard. This guy (pointing at me) once worked 10 hours each day, where I worked 16 hours. We really need to move fast."
I'll just leave this words here.14 -
Wrote this on a quote board at work after spending six hours trying to get one piece of software to work on Ubuntu.15
-
You've spent nearly 5 hours trying to figure out why your app won't work. Only to realize you misspelled a string constant.2
-
Teamate: Hey I'll checkout you're branch to see what you've got done today.
Me: ...Ok.
Few hours later Teammate forgets to change branch and overwrites all my code in my branch causing merge hell and creating hours of more work.
Me:...what in the f***?!6 -
Me: *Has 3 difficult exams to study for and hours of work*
Also me: I should try my hand at encryption in Python.7 -
That moment that you think of a way better way to do something than your initial idea was RIGHT BEFORE you implement / start working on the initial idea instead of after hours of work.
I could get used to this!2 -
Today is my birthday.
I wish I wasn't such a lazy piece of shit and actually get my personal projects done.
Thanks in advance, birthday wish granter.2 -
Job interview today, wish me luck guys.
It's find another job or take my kids to work every day as the hours aren't possible as a single dad.12 -
You pay a dev for 8 hours of work, he/she thinks about (ie. works on) the problem for 24...
Best deal ever :/2 -
So IT just blocked all web browsers at work apart from internet explorer.....
I have been using it for 2 hours and I think I'm about ready to end it all....17 -
After many hours of work I just finished my first real project in PHP. Now everywhere I look I see people bashing on PHP and praising Node.

Using Eclipse for java programming.
My program doesn't work... No errors, no warnings, the logic seems good.
A couple of hours of debugging later still nothing.
I close it and open it again, it works, thanks Eclipse.5 -
After 8 hours of focusing on two monitors at work, I go home so I can focus on my own two monitors.3

Thank you
Good luck💦little one💦13 -
I am roughly 12 hours away from a deadline that seemed pretty impossible.
I finally got everything to work, it seems I'm actually going to make it.
After so many hours of frustration, despair and walking in circles, it is finally fun again :)7 -
Friend: Can you write me a discord bot?
Me: Sure, I guess.
Me: *thinking* I can probably do it in 2 hours or less*
Me: *2 hours later* why does this API work like that and why the fuck is my node module folder so big???9 -
Just bought the Surfacebook and all day at work I imagined trying out all its features and different apps - Then I woke up to realise it is still a Windows device, been installing updates for the past two hours.2
-
"There were a lot of complaints about missing grades" well, yes. That's what happens when you make me grade all 60 submissions every week while I work 10-12 hours a day at my other job, on average.17
-
Man it's midnight and all I want to do is work. 5 hours from now I'll be dragging out of bed to go to work where nothing gets accomplished. In 17 hours when I drag in from work I can do real work for 7 hours before crashing while wishing I could just code through the night. It's an infinite loop and I dont know how to fix it!10
-
Law's passed in France making it illegal for your boss to send you mails after work hours! So many devs there can now be in peace! If only this was implemented everywhere :/
http://ubergizmo.com/2016/05/...4 -
So... We lost power here.
Why now?? I have work to do!!
I guess I get a free pass to scroll through Devrant for the next few hours.4 -
Put in 22 hours of work (straight through) and an end user requested changes the next day.
Fuck you, I'm out. -
To the people talking about boats on the other side of the cubical wall, FUCK YOU! YOU HAVE BEEN TALKING FOR 45 MINUTES! DO YOU WORK? I HOPE YOUR BOATS ALL GET RUST. Yay just ranked 3rd in an IBM hackathon. Didn't know I could stay up for 36 hours straight and work 30 of them.2 -
After refusing to work over 40 hours a week and refusing to work last Sunday, today I was fired. It's been the 2nd time in my life and it's been the same deal: totally unrealistic timelines and totally unrealistic work expectations.
No big loss. Fuck that place.9 -
I need 15 minutes to solve this bug.
... 3 hours later: I have no idea why my code doesn't work. :)1 -
The deadline is tomorrow and we should work for extra hours to make it through! Oh look, a video about roman army structure!2
-
Never name two different variables with the ALMOST same name or It will stop your work for a hours. I named one "lang" and anothers "langs"2
-
That moment when clients employees comment on your working hours and the amount of work you do...
Fun fact: I'm replacing their jobs with applications.1 -
When you work for hours to solve a bug, and finally you fixed it, only to have 2 new ones show up to replace it:3
-
Client declined to allow billing over the weekend, demanded I work 20 hours. Task will be mysteriously blocked or delayed for the next two days as a result.6
-
Am I the only one who loved coding - I could spend hours and hours on my personal projects; but after I finally got a job, I'm just too exhausted from coding at work to do any coding at home? How did you overcome it?8
-
!rant I don't understand how a lot of you guys can work 10-14 hours a day! I see a lot of those messages and it makes me wonder if I am a lazy dev or something. After 8 hours of working I'm just exhausted and wanting to go home to my family :/12
-
Goooooooooooood morning, devRant, This is me after 8 hours of work, and barely 5 hours of sleep followed.11
-
Tracing thousands of lines of codes at work to find something for almost 2-3 hours.
All of a sudden I can't remember what I am looking for anymore.
#StartingAgain :(1 -
After spending hours with one problem and when you finally get it working:
1. Yei it works!
2. What? Why does it work?
3. WTF did I just do to get it working?
4. - >Coffee2 -
A kid I work with referred to himself as a former child genius.
A few hours later and I’m still cringing4 -
If you work 8 hours a day sincerely, you will become a manager and work 12 hours a day
Made my day...hahahahah -
If only I had enough freelance work to quit my job and dictate my own hours. working hours would be 18:00 to 5:00.1
-
A little gratitude would be most appreciated when you work like ~24 hours non-stop! The people have a life too you know!5
-
OMG I just accidentally deleted hundreds of hours of work permanently ... F*** ME 😱😱😱😨😨😱😰
THIS IS WHY I DON'T FUCKING USE AUTOMATED BATCH SCRIPTS.22 -
Fun drinking game: work on a legacy system for a few hours. Every time you say "what the fuck?" equals 1 shot.5

FUCK STATIC-SIZED ARRAY!!!
FUCK YOU!!!!
FOR MORE THAN 3 HOURS I TRY TO ADD A VALUE TO AN ARRAY
Nothing work...

FML... damn thing even has an SSD in ir for crying out loud8 -
to all those smart-asses who kept praising Windows for the new "active hours" feature as opposed to forced restart when updates are downloaded.
I work more than 14 hours a day, WILLINGLY!21 -
Writing some algorithm:
me: *codes for half an hour*
"hmm... isn't working... wait wtf this isn't right..."
me: *codes for an hour again*
"still not working hmmm... wait what no this isn't supposed to work..."
me: *codes for a few hours*
"still not working God damnit.... it's supposed to work now..."
me after another few hours: MOTHERFUCKER CAN YOU START FCKING WORKING FUUUUUUUUUUU1 -
I currently work 60 hours a week, working two jobs just so I can earn enough money to pay off loans, get better equipment and basically just survive.5
-
That feeling you get after battling css for the better part of two hours then, you finally have it work exactly the way you want it!
😊2 -
FINALLY after 48 hours coding. 1000 lines of algorythms ....
Managed to sync video playback on 30 Machines, didnt go to work "sick".

I just spent 2 hours customizing Atom and didn't get any work done.
No sleep for me today I guess...2 -
Saturday mornings are the best. I've got my coffee. I've got my music. And I've got hours of free time to work on my own projects.1
-
it's so fucking hot in here and I've got no work and still 3 hours left to go...just let me go hooome!5
-
Waiting for Visual Studio 2013 installation to finish for 2 hours. Stuck at work while I could be home by this time
*Hatred towards Microsoft intensifies*9 -
My manager got really upset that we don't want to go with him play basketball every day during work hours.
Well - some of us actually do have to do some work at work.5 -
Never do personal stuff at work, never do work stuff unless hours are being counted. Proper separation of duties.
Boss always tells us we only work 38 hours a week and any other time we do we can take off later.
Procrastination for work projects thus usually involves working on unrelated, more exciting projects instead of the one with the hard deadline ;)1 -
Now i told u have to work 44 hours in a week, after 3 mounths they will hire me if i be good enough.
Sounds scary a little🏢7 -
Just because you have nowhere to go for a vacation right now, it does not mean there’s no point taking a holiday.
You’re still human and besides, now you’re working double hours - house work + office work + kids & family!
PS - You work to live not vice-versa :)13 -
Be honest.
How many hours of your work day do you do real work?
Right now, I am at about 7/8.
Usually about 5/8.18 -
Having a job helps a lot when you've just had a really bad breakup. The work distracts you from the shit you're going through for at least 10 hours everyday. But the weekends become really depressing.3
-
Damn I'm pretty hard hitting my limits here
My company asked me if I would like to work some extra hours because otherwise they don't make all the deadlines
But damnit asking 10+ hours a day from a junior web developer is quite a lot
😒 Especially if it's an old legacy project where I have to work on...8 -
(This happened a few days ago:)
First day on the job, last session of debriefing, HR comes to explain us some company policies.
Among them, they want us to fill in our working hours using a smartphone app (Android & iOS only).
I raise my hand and I ask them what can I do, since I have a Windows Phone.
HR lady's face is striken with sheer terror. Since then, I'm known as the "Windows Phone Guy"... 😁
I'm more than proud of myself. 🙂
P.S. We also got some cool Windows tablet to use during our training period...5 -
Partners off at TAFE and I've got 3 hours to kill before walking to work, maccas and writing it is then!
Wish I brought my Mac so I could work on my other projects but oh well ¯\_(ツ)_/¯11 -
When i was in my first cs class and thought I had been in the computer lab for an <i>hour</i> and realized it had been 6 hours. (if I have to work 40+ hours a week, it should be something so fun that I get lost in it and it that feels like 7 hours a week).
-
@Baguette is apparently a professional sleeper, please teach me, I need an expert in this domain, I can't stand going to work with barely 4~ hours of sleep / night5
-
So, I finally got a bicycle today. Time to start working on my health...
Am I the only one who's daily regime was:
1 - Go to work, sit around for 8 to 9 hours
2 - Come home, sit around for 8 to 9 hours
3 - Sleep for 8 hours
Goto 1?
I was surprised how the bikes these days are so incredibly light. I could lift it and keep it up no problem!12 -
"Why are you sometimes late?"
Because your promised office was always late. Had to commute 2 hours and work for almost 10 hours in weekdays just to sleep for 4 hours.
You said that the new Office will be in August. Now it's October and it's still half-baked.
Learn Empathy first5 -
Best: I got my first job as Android dev
Worst: Long commute everyday (2.5 hours from home to work)2 -
Do you think that "Work From Home" or "Remote Work" tends to reduce the work life boundary for the employees?
What I think is that Managers feel fine pinging employees at any time of the day. And as employees either you get good at ignoring messages or work outside the working hours.20 -
Just lost 2 hours of work because XCode decided to crash for no fucking reason. What a hot piece of garbage. Fuck XCode. FUCK.7
-
How do you guys prevent yourself from overworking? With deadline pressures I feel like it is very easy to work more than your regular 8 hours22
-
when your code doesn't work and you're stuck for hours and start to question your career choices...3
-
So after a pretty packed day of family time, DIY, play dates and parenting, I managed to squeeze in a couple of hours of game dev... now to get up in 6 hours to go to work.1
-
The problem with daylight time saving is it also gets darker earlier....
And well work hours don't get shorter... Just means now after sitting in an office all day, I now go home in the dark.
Who exactly is saving on daylight...
How about we also cut work hours as well...3 -
I thought I had conquered a piece of complex logical code, after hours of work... ran my tests, and it turns out there is one tiny subscenario that didn't occur to me. fml.2
-
Time for late night coding, debugging, thinking..been busy since I woke up, work, college, exams, work..work while waiting for an exam..
Coffee - check
Cigarettes - check
Music to keep me motivated - check
Laptop still not lagging - check
Will probably want to sleep in couple of hours - check -
So i already worked 40 hours this week and i have still 8 more hours to go.
Made a shift from 08:30 till 23:30 and wannabe lead had the guts to tell me i could work from home.
Maybe it's not a bad idea to leave the office.
And fucking quit1 -
So my company is now giving us flexibile work hours, but we still gotta do 9 hours a day, of which 1 can be outside the office. Wouldn't it be easier to just make it an 8 hour-day and be done with it?2
-
This week at work I spent 20 hours debugging automated tests to avoid manual testing that would've taken a few hours.5
-
Is there a Developers' Manifesto? Like Agile Manifesto?
If not let's start one here, I'll start:
-We should not be working outside work hours except for exceptional cases, hours != 24/7 && exceptional != 7 days a week
-Death to last minute changes!
-Everyone needs to understand Murphy's Law, it's real!3 -
What to do when you're 8 hours away from home at work and all you want to do is netflix and snuggle in bed 😞4
-
When you have no work to do at work because the ball is in other people's court. And you need to stay at work for another 6 hours..5
-
Fuck CORS.
Three hours into trying to make it fucking work... YES BROWSER I ALLOWED ALL ORIGINS WHY DONT YOU WORK 😭😭5 -
Job offer be like:
"You will be working from home with mostly flexible hours although you will need to attend the team meeting which is at approximately 8:30am GMT and to work for 3 hours after this time for team collaboration" -
Looking at Slack, it seems like several people were working past 8pm last night. I refuse to feel guilty for only working 40 hours a week. That's all on them.1
-
Be me.
Learn angular for a project @ work.
Do the filter-page-by-textbox thing.
Type "nex" in search bar.
Not working.
Spend 3 hours reading tutorials and docs.
Realize all divs have "nex" in them. -
When the project lead gave a half hour speech for why our shitty web page was similar to Elon Musk’s rocket and how we needed to work extra to get it off the ground, to justify an extra 3 months of unpaid weekend work at 10 hours a day, after already getting 6 months of unpaid weekend work when I was a junior dev.1
-
so, i got a job in a company with 140 employees. they wanted me to work 9 hours a day, 30 min rest time and i had to pay for everything like lunch and even coffee. if i get to work late or leave work early they would punish me.
Oh god...6 -
How I work:
I drink lots of coffee and pass out for 12 hours.
It’s like alcoholism, just less productive.28 -
Hate leaving work feeling useless for only writing 5 lines of working code today.
4 hours of meetings, an hour of calls, 2 hours to find 2 annoying bugs and the rest waiting for an api throttle limit so I can test again.
Hoping tomorrow is better!2 -
Last semester at university we worked on a Java project and couldn't get our netbeans project to work.
We spent hours on hours to finally find out my fellow student mixed up java.lang with lava.
We added a slide in our presentation for that issue to hide the pain. -
Can anyone recommend an Android app for blocking notifications from a specific app during, for example, non working hours? Context: we use Telegram as a communication channel, but it's often used outside of work hours too by some colleagues. I wanna be updated during work hours, but want my peace after and before. I'm using Android 6, and haven't found a way to do this natively yet.5
-
I blame JetBrains team Everytime I work with sublime. Those wasted hours trying to figure out wtf is going on with my code and my only mistake is that I forget to save my work....1
-
I don't know how many hours in a row it was, but one month I put down about 340 hours of work.
My boss had taken upon this massive project with a deadline at the end of the month. I basically lived at the office (I actually spent the night there more than once), meanwhile he was out sailing.1 -
Deadline in 24 work hours, for a in-house product to automate payment processing.
Why in 24 hours you say? , Me and the accounting guy is going on vacation on Friday.
Will it go into production on Friday evening while I'm going through the door?
¯\_(ツ)_/¯5 -
Anyone else find they work better between the hours of say 10am - 2am rather than the "normal office hours" of 9am - 5pm?
The problem is if I start later then the people who I work with are so absorbed in their work that I don't receive a reply to my email.1 -
How many hours of actual productive work do you devs average a day? Honestly, I think I average about 2 hours of honest, good work in my 8 hour day. Between random meaningless meetings that could be emailed out or just daily distractions (coworkers chatting, my phone, etc). Am I alone in this?9
-
!realRant
This weekend was supposed to be a productive one, I was going to start with a little project that I want to do and replenish some hours of work, sadly I decided to install VS code and configure it, 5 hours invested already, fuck a me and my stupid ideas1 -
160 Hours worth of work from the beginning of the month till today. i push my self a little bit to far. i hope off work till end of the month worth it.
Edited : 160 instead of 1403 -
I Feel very happy being in quarantine. Going to college and wasting 6-7 hours of time in learning that stupid old stuff and working all night totally sucks. Now, i have my whole 24 hours to work. Stupid outdated indian colleges.6
-
Code on own side project the whole night without sleeping til 6-7am right before going to work because today is half day only in office.
I thought I could manage it but haha totally wrong, First 2 hours were good, during last 2 hours I was trying my best not to fell asleep.
Worst decision ever.2 -
What hours do you work?
I work 9-6, most people at my office work 7-4 or 8-5. I have the flexibility to work when I want, but never get to bed early enough to start earlier than 9. I feel behind when I get in the office because most of my coworkers and clients have already been at for an hour or 2.
When do you work and why? Can you tell if it’s impacted your career at all?16 -
I just mistakenly replaced 48 hours of work with the old files... I think i'm gonna die. Someone please help me if you can.8
-
Got into work. 2 hours worth of meetings without my daily caffeine. Trying to decide if I am cranky or people really are this stupid.1
-
You guys, who despite crazy commute and work hours, still find time and energy for side projects: I salute you. You're phenomenal. Teach me your ways4
-
You come to work 2 hours early to continue a project that needs to launch next Friday.
40 minutes later you're still eating breakfast and browsing DevRant.
The coding hour has already hit and the day hasn't even started.4 -
Be developing in python 3
$ pip install <library>
Don't understand for hours why it doesn't work
I should alias pip3 -
My new PM thinks programming is like using Excel to define times and send the price of the work hours to the clients... 😂1
-
2 job offers on table.
One, where I'd to work on multiple technologies, comfortable timing i.e 6 - 7 hours a day. Enough time to do personal projects.
Other, I'd to work on single technology stack, but more complex and large projects. Good for architectural and design pattern knowledge. Better pay, but stressing work hours like 8-10 hours daily. Might be on weekends as well.
Help me out!18 -
The team in our office was forced to have, and I'm not kidding, TWO hours long agile meetings EVERY day. That's right, only 6 hours a day for work. Crazy managers
-
My eyes are bleeding! I've been working on a uni assignment for the last 48 hours on account of being a fucking asshole and leaving it for the last minute... Gotta submit in 12 hours and now I'm here talking shit and ++ing because shit, why not... What a piece of work.3
-
So... This is the deal... I'm currently working part time (15 hours a week) while studying. We have a pretty hectic week at school and my boss is in the states. He told me I could take the week off. Great!
I now have a mailbox close to exploding and 20+ hours of work that has to be done this week. Bye bye weekend -
Just spent 2 hours debugging a volley call that wouldn't work because a header got refactored by mistake.....
😫😫😫 -
When your colleagues says "have a nice weekend" but you might need to work 48 hours over the weekend
😅🤨😐😕🙁😣😢😭🤮😷🤒😵👹 -
Spent 2 hours today doing L1 support work!!! God i hate working with lazy people!!!
2 hours wasted checking for an application bug on all deployed client pcs when the only issue is the printer has no fucking paper!!!
L1 and L2 support exists for these kind of issues!! Do your god damn jobs!!! -
Yeah I have finished my work on Linux and have 2 hours to play video games.
But first let me backup my work.
*error : file system in read-only mode*
Fix the error & update backup script
Switch OS to windows
*wait, windows is updating*
Start game
*game need to be updated*
2 hours later, I still haven't played.1 -
Back at work after summer vacation. Been here 6 hours, written one (1) line of code. And it does not compile....
I'm leaving early!1 -
This cat is looking at me like how my manager looks at me when I say am gonna work a few extra hours of work because I like what I do...
Am the one who gave her the milk 😅1 -
Four hours of work and the work horse decides to have a heart attack.
Thank the server gods for swap files. -
So many people ranting about devRant needing to be more secret when at work?
I've got a solution coming up somewhere in the next 4 hours.7 -
Before lockdown/quarantine: work 12 hours a day.
During lockdown/quarantine: work 12 hours a day.
After lockdown/quarantine: work 12 hours a day.

I spent 3 hours truing to figure out why my ajax request doesnt work just to find that i missed "#" in targeting element. I feel so stupid and relieved at the same time.

Debugging AWS IAM credentials wondering why they don't work for 5 hours.
Note to self: Check the clock first next time. -
Loving inaccurate documentation...
And it's from a big company as well!
Reset value: 0x0000007F
I didn't get it to work for several hours.
And then I checked...
The actual value it gets reset to is 0.
Just 0. -
5 hours in a meeting and 1 hour doing actual work then I get told I need to pick up the pace there's lots of work to do. Just intern things1
-
On Sunday nights I hate doing what I love for a job. Lying in bed for hours too excited to sleep. Brain won't switch off about the cool things I'll be too tired to work on properly in a few hours
-
The most work hours in a row n a non-dev job were 14 hours, but they were the hardest.
During University I worked in a warehouse once a week. It wasn't that bad and I could rest my brain for 8 hours. But around Christmas time they wanted me to do some extra work (as well as everybody else there). So I had to carry 20kg packages for 14 hours. Three days in a row from 7am to 9pm. I had two travel two hours to work and home again, so I had to get up around 4:30am and went to sleep at midnight. I'm so glad it was only a student job and I don't have to do this in my current job. And I feel sorry for all those warehouse workers, who had to do this regularly.1 -
Holy fucking shit! Almost 5 hours I was trying to make Docker container with PHP 5.4 to work, because I couldnt fucking connect to my fucking localhost DB. After 5 fucking hours of desperation I tried to create DB on my hosting and... IT FUCKING WORKS LIKE CHARM. IF I KNEW SOONER!!!
-
Going from a project in fire and 60+ hours a week back down to in-between projects and 40 hours a week. For the first week I was so confused on what I should be doing. Now I realize I have time for my own projects. I bet my work like goes crazy just as soon as I get into something.

How do you spend the first 4 hours ( or whatever hours you have before you sleep) after coming home from work/college?
I am currently an unemployed undergrad doing some freelancing from a nearby co-working space. Mine is usually spent eating and binge watching some web series, sometimes doing some coding before going off to sleep19 -
How do you deal with the feeling that you coded all those hours for nothing? You deep down know this solution will never work but you don't want the hours go to waste so you just continue. And then it's 2am, you have shit code, nothing works and your life is falling apart.9

50% position (95 hours a month)
100% of my current compensation (~90k$)
In a company like the one I work in now: great team and great tech drive.
Rest of the time is for hobbies and family.2 -
I spent several hours today looking for remote jobs on freelancer.com and this new platform called kalido. just a waste of my time.
All these platforms doesn't work for me.4 -

These moments I'm too dumb to even setup a library or anything. That's just so frustrating! I spent many hours realising OpenCV may not work on my machine6

"Let me get an early night and wake up early for a change"
Wakes up 12 hours later, 10 minutes before work starts 😑 -
I can't handle the three projects a week I have in my school, I made like 60 hours of work last week. How do you do guys?!4

When your code just doesn't work without any apparent reason, and after hours you realise that it's due to a misplaced }. Semicolons are overrated.2

When you are learning to use network services by building a twitter app, and can't get it to work for 4 hours straight because you spelled Authorize wrong...2

Term: Lie in
Definition: Those 2 or 3 hours extra my girlfriend sleeps while I go to Starbucks and get some work done. Currently watching web development lectures. -
My friends don't understand what it's like to be a dev so when I ask for times/arrangements they think I'm just being a prick about it. Sometimes I ask for specific times because I have to do pull requests and what not and I want to arrange it to maximize little downtime but because none of these guys are Devs they don't understand. How do I help these guys understand that me asking for specific times isn't about me being a prick, it just has to do with work because when I tell them that they don't get it3
-
It's difficult to turn off the brain after a full day of work... you can't sleep 'cos the ideas must be purged or else they will rattle around all night... so you log on remotely just to get it down but proceed to (accidentally) work another nine hours... you finish with only enough time for two hours sleep before you'll need to get up for work again.
-
The feeling when getting the one thing you've been working on for hours to work ... HOYL YS HIT!11!!
-
Sometimes the only options you have are bad ones. But you still have to chose. My life right now. Ah welp3
-
Tonight was my first experience with bazel.
It seems cool, but I still haven't gotten anything to work yet and it's been about 4 hours.
It hasn't helped that it doesn't work too well on Windows.1 -
FML..
I worked directly in my Github repo folder while working on a project (don't ask me why). I did my initial commit with all my code from the start until 5 hours ago. I never pushed.. A minute ago, I checked my commit and noticed that there were DB credentials in one of the files. So.. Smart me.. "revert commit"..
Result. Everything got deleted except my node_modules folder and the readme file.. I lost everything.. Fuck me, I'm going home..
Please, someone.. Can I get these files back via git or something? Can't find anything in in the history..9 -
Nothing beats configuring an amp simulator for nearly three and a half hours and getting it to work only to have it not work later that night because JACK decided to not detect a $40 cable you bought anymore
-
funny when project managers divide a developer's time like its 25% yours per day and 75% mine and then both assign him 8 hours of work.
-
Finally have 5 hours of peace and quiet to develop without the family or work...Get stubbornly stuck on one bug for 5 hours and basically accomplish little to nothing.

4200 php files with exploit code removed or cleaned and 12 hours of work, and I can cautiously sigh a relief2

How many times are you interrupted during a normal day of work? Could you estimate ( on the fly) how many hours a week you lose becuse of that?5

Made a little change to the project.
Went out to grab coffee.
Project broke.
Forgot what change was made.
2 hours spent tracking down the change.
People ask me why I work 12 hours a day. Here's why.4 -
Why is it so that I have 8 hours to work, but find myself to only be productive in the last 2 hours... I find it difficult to work in the mornings, to much chaos up in my head.
I'll loose the job if I continue so, any tips?3 -
I really want to know this:
- If you're a student, how many hours do you spend on studying for university in a week?
- If you're already working, how many hours do you work in a week?6 -
8 hours ... maybe?!?! I agree with previous ranter who says we CANNOT work more than 2 hours straight without some sort of break.
Including breaks, but not including sleep ... once did 48 hours -
Finished my first freelance web project today. Spent 11 hours coding it. Another 10 hours trying to get it to work on the browser.
-
I work 8-9 hours a day. With my PMs love for contextual switching I avg 6 hours of client billable time.
Debating if I should bother having this talk with them. My PMs a fcn bull dog which makes things hard. Can’t address anything without it being a bull taking session.4 -
6 hours of work before I actually wrote a line of code today. Reverse engineering stuff is interesting but not always fun
-
6 hours at work to find out I needed to supply TaskCreationOptions.LongRunning to one method to fix this error.
As Kenan and Kel would say: WHYYYYYYYY -

Its midnight here...worked for almost 12 hours.... Spend the last 30 mins or so very frustrated and try to figure out why I am not getting desired response. Edited the code again and again... Soon I realize... I am editing local codes, never pushed to live. And Im testing live the whole time....WOW. I am relieved and ashamed at the same time.
-
The best tip I got is scheduling. Try to focus on work for 1-2 hours and then take a break. On the break you can check Facebook, news or maybe porn if that's your thing.
-
Have to do 80 hours of work in 40
*quits job, start at a new place*
Now I mostly wait for test and code reviews and are fucking bored...
Guess I have to start 100% freelancing soon 🙃3 -
Assuming you're working 8 hours a day, for how long do you manage to stay productive? I think I can't do more than 4 and a half. Maybe 6 on a good day.1
-
This was the first intense work day for month, seems like people is coming back from vacation now.
I worked 4 hours straight.2 -
That one time the product manager kept me at work with no tasks just because I came in late on a Friday (the day off here). Keep in mind I worked 14 hours for 2 days in the same week.
-
I had my first client meeting today.
Now I understand the pain of dealing with clients rather than doing work.
I don't relish the fact I had to stay an extra 2 hours either. -
My process for estimating dev work?
3 hours a day of uninterrupted dev time, 4 days a week (~12 hours a week).
So when I say the project will take 24 hours, it is about two weeks worth of work.2 -
"We don't have time for refactoring this PR now, please open a new task and we'll work on it asap."
Merge, Deploy, and set new task as Won'tFix two hours later :-/ -
I'm a junior, now getting used to the idea of having to finish something in the same day if it's urgent for production and therefore having to clock in extra hours.
It's depressing, in a way.. I'm hoping to avoid this as much as I can and just get work done within the usual 7.5 hours.2 -
Inhuman deadlines imposed by non-programmers... don't know what feels worst: the shame of my own present code, or the fear of my own future bugs.
-
If the super power had created humans without the necessity of sleep, how many hours do you think your employer would ask you to work in a day?6
-
It's hard enough to survive a whole work-week on 1-3 hours of non-deep sleep per night.
Being away from home for roughly 12 hours a day; only working about 8 on the clock, and still being on standby after hours.
Now you expect me to count all those hours? I'm too tired for that, haha :p -
Why oh why, why does my project not work... 2 hours later, "Oh Damn, I forgot a semicolon. That's it, I'm switching to Kotlin."2

I'm motivated want to work on my Projects.
My PC doesn't go on. Needed 4 Hours to fix, now demotivated.
Yeah Sunday1 -
Work in a startup, with no pressure to work after hours.
Might sound bliss for those of you working 80 hour weeks, but be honest with yourselves, what would you plan on doing after work anyway?3 -
Thought I would work on a side project this evening to make my life easier at work. *spends the next 4 hours setting up my works dev environment at home.*
-
When you have 5 hours on a task, struggle for the first hour procrastinating , second hour trying to look into the problem ,then convincing yourself you cannot work until this mess of a file is sorted out, spends another hour restructuring the whole file , adding comments and moving related logic together.
Great 2 hours to do a 5 hour job -
Can someone tell me why this worked
`int percentHealth = (getHealth() * 100) / maxHealth;`
But this didn't work
`int percentHealth = (getHealth() / maxHealth) * 100;`
It stressed me out for +2 hours.8 -
Around 24 hours. Over 48 hours!
It's was in high school, I had a job in grocery store stucking up shelfs. I had two shifts that weekend. it's was Saturday I had just finished working a 13 hours shifts and my mates was pressuring me to join for video games and drinking.

Im trying to install visual studio 2017 at my work for 3 hours now. Why wont it continue after downloading the assets. Fuck my fucking life.
-
Can’t remember the longest “consecutive hours” session, but had a few work days that probably lasted 14 hours ( had breaks though )
Did however do 7 months of work days starting at 6am and ending at 5pm, but had two long breaks most days.
Also did a 21 day working streak once, skipping 3 weekends.
Now I work comfortably 😬 -
When I work extra hours on weekends, so I can finally take a break from Microsoft Word and write some code for a change. It's going on for a second week now, if not longer 😢1

That moment when the business expects you to work 60 hours and be available 24/7 to support rollout, but won't subject their team to the same.

What's your ideal and current work time?
How many hours do you work per day and when do you start?
And what days you are mostly off?11 -
This CORS is a huge bummer. It took me nearly 4 hours of pounding my head on keyboard trying to figure out why my "$http.post" doesn't work.
-
My one way commute to work is at least 2 hours on bus. Is this normal ?
I am tired almost all the time.6 -
I'm currently doing my college internship at a company where the working hours are from 8 am till 5 pm. I was suprised by the hours because it feels so long. I was wondering what hour do you guys work and does every company use these hours? I live in Belgium. I'm not sure how it is in other countries. Thanks!6
-
Never quote less than the time it will absolutely take to do. Because three months goes by and rather your PM did or didn't say something along the lines of "they cant afford that much time" or "We'll need to keep time around this range to make it happen for them and the residual income will cover that", your head will still be on the table when those words are forgotten and the question of the day is "why are we 200 hours over?" and your PMs response in none other then "dev quoted it".1
-
I've recently been promoted and I'm going from hourly to salaried. Amidst this crisis and the promotion I've gotten lost in the big changes and forgot to ask the simple questions.
When tf do I leave work if I'm not tracking my hours anymore? (Or for the near future, log off of work)
I know the general consensus is "when the work is done", but we all know the work is never truly done5 -
Fucking amd video drivers on laptop that doesen't work. In 4 hours i go to work and i am installing drivers...
-
Whenever there is a new project to work on, I get the complex parts, I work for 10 Hours a day. While others get simple tasks, go home on time.
Question do I take that as a compliment ? -
Been forced to use my MacBook Pro with 4/5 years to work today (I'm on client company)...

This day will be looooong3 -
1) own work hours.
2) good salary.
3) programming is fun.
and most of all.
we can make an impact in other peoples life. -
How do you guys balance work, projects and family?
I work 40 hours a week, plus 15-30 hours a week on my own projects. I feel like I don't have enough time for my family(SO) at times.3 -
Honest question, if you work in an agile environment, do you prefer story points or counting of hours to gauge tasks?4
-
When you try to fix an error for hours and in the end you manage to fix it but the way you fixed it shouldn't work at all.

How do you fellow programmers deal with eye bags? Looking like a zombie after 8 hours of work is killing me6
-
How many hours do you really work during your current 8 hours day? Personally I'm waisting at least 2 hours doing non work related stuff :)4
-
Our working hours is 9 to 6, but it feels embarrassing to go home at 6 because you are expected to work overtime.5
-
Just wondering how many hours a week do most programmers work in your country? How many days a week, and is overtime usually expected from you?15
-
Walmart Retail Link has been down for five hours. No word on when it will be back up. All our work is halted until then.

What is the general rule/idea around meetings outside of your work hours?
It has happened several times that I wasn't able to join some meetings that were outside of my work hours. I try to join but some thing or the other comes up and then I miss it. I make sure to join any meeting that's highly important or if it's about anything related to my work (or if I'm required to attend).
I work with people in different time zones and there was a meeting set after 8:30pm my time, and I wasn't able to join. My coworker messaged me, in a passive aggressive way (seemingly), asking if he needs to remind me before every meeting in my calendar so that I would join.
I feel like I'm not being paid enough for the work that I do, and I work around 8-9 hours (sometimes 10 and I don't get paid for overtime).
On top of that, am I obligated to attend every meeting and not have anything planned or unplanned to do after work hours? (I don't think I should have any obligation)
I don't have previous experience of working with international teams/clients before, so I'm not sure what I should do here.9 -
Been un since Thursday 9am. Doing automated testing going to work and then back to testing. Finished it 3 hours ago and I can't go to bed now.3

How many hours do you program each day? How many hours do you program until you make a break?
I am looking for a way to work efficiently and healthily.6 -
For people who work fulltime for a software company as a developer, how are your hours tracked? As in, are you assigned specific hours per task? Are you just given deadlines for a task to be done by? How small are tasks broken up into, etc?14
-
If I work at home this weekend to get some undersized stuff done by monday . Should I ask them to pay me extra?
Or we devs do not have those privileges?1 -

Yesterday I tried to change a part of my old code (wpf app) and guess what happened?
Whole app didn't worked then. :D
I had to stay away till 2am and work 5 hours to fix it. -
Love the way our "senior" dev jumps into a project without reading the docs or even comments for that matter, removes and shifts things around then sits with me for 3 hours wondering why it won't work.
