A small story on digitalization
I had spent an hour in the bank with my dad, as he had to transfer some money. I couldn't resist myself & asked:
Dad, why don't we activate your internet banking?
''Why would I do that?'' He asked, ''Well, then you wont have to spend an hour here for things like transfer.
You can even do your shopping online. Everything will be so easy!
I was so excited about initiating him into the world of Net banking.
He asked, If I do that, I wont have to step out of the house?
''Yes, yes''! I said. I told him how even grocery can be delivered at door now and how amazon delivers everything!
His answer left me tongue-tied.
He said ''Since I entered this bank today, I have met four of my friends, I have chatted a while with the staff who know me very well by now.
Two years back I got sick, The store owner from whom I buy fruits, came to see me and sat by my bedside and cried.
When u r Mom fell down few days back while on her morning walk. Our local grocer saw her and immediately got his car to rush her home as he knows where I live.
Would I have that 'human' touch if everything became online?
I like to know the person that I'm dealing with and not just the 'seller'. It creates bonds. Relationships.
Does "online" deliver all this as well?
Technology isn't life #BeHuman
For those who are not getting the context, this things happen in India. It is truth not a fact.17
Manager: You really shouldn’t be doing that
Dev: It’s in my job description
Manager: Yeah but you still shouldn’t be doing it.
Dev: Who should I hand it off to?
Manager: We don’t have anyone else to hand off that task to.
Dev: Ok, do I stop doing it?
Manager: 😡 Of course not, it needs to get done! I’m just saying you shouldn’t do it.
So today this Mother F**ker get HR to back him up to accuse me of not communicating well in the team because I consistently asked him (the code owner) why he kept coding not following the coding guideline.
How is it not communicating? He literally ghosted me and blocked me every time I ask him questions. Which I somewhat don't understand what he is trying to do. HR lady told me that a senior software engineer should have the knowledge to understand everything and all the code.
But the code looks like this :44
So today I receive 23 emails on DMCA takedown notice from last year project (which is a personal project). I asked Github why they think it is violating their policy, they told me they receive tonnes of complaints from a company, they shared the chat and that's the ex-company that fired me.
Even the project is not related to them, they seem to want to "Cancel" me on Github. Bro this is Github, not Twitter! Cancel culture does not work here.
Some of my IoT projects they flag it In Github, which I believe my ex-company they don't do any IOT projects. How the fuck it is violating their so called "code nondisclosure"?34
I was once working for a company as a part time dev in the centrum of my city.
After working there for almost 1 year I noticed that I didn't get paid the last 2 months. I think it was about 500 euro's. (1 day per week).
So I went on my bike to the company to see whatsup. I came into the store and told my boss I hadn't been paid for 2 months. Even tho I did work.
He then got so angry! Just started yelling "YEAH BECAUSE THE PROJECT ISNT NEAR COMPLETE, NOTHING IS WORKING" I explained him the panel still had to be configured and that everything he asked me to do had been programmed and he then fucking told me he wanted it a different way even tho we clearly discussed it WEEKS AGO and he clearly said what he wanted. so he wanted dont revisions. I told him that this is not possible at this moment because holidays are around the corner and I want to go om vacation. (and he too!!!)
He then got so fucking angry he said "come with me for a second" we walk to the door of the building and then he just pushed me out of there and kicked me in my back.
I got so fucking pissed, I opened the door and asked him if je thinks this is a normal way to discuss. He closed the store door again, and I couldnt hold back anymore. I threw my full can of Red Bull against the glass door. The can exploded, and his whole fucking window had energy drink on it. He took some fucking steal pipe, so I walked back. But while trying to get away I jumped on his store sign. Which broke into pieces (they are quite expanasive). He came outside with his fucking pipe and he was trying to hit me. We had a crowd and people started yelling at him. I walked away but the asshole took my bike and put it inside his store. So that I couldnt leave.
So than I called the cops and reported him. For minor assault and some other things. Shortly after I deleted the entire project from his stupid server.
I really dont know this kinda shit happends, he probably felt like I didn't deserve that money even tho I did everything he asked for within deadline. Trying to solve it after vacation was also not an option. I signed him up for a few news letters after that.11
Me talking to a recruiter (even though I am not looking for a job)
Me: If I walk into an interview, and they ask me to reverse a binary tree for a frontend Reac or Vue position or something along those lines, I will end the call and/or walk away from it.
Him: I get similar feelings from other programmers, I don't quite understand why the notion is as common
Me: Because it is fucking useless, it servers no purpose to a dev to know about that when building frontends with react, I link my github profile, for which they can find advanced backend-frontend related projects, compiler and interpreter projects, plus the title I currently have at my workplace and a bunch of other shit, I am not interviewing for a teaching position at an institute, but an actual place of work, for which if they want to know about DS and A they can review my profile which has a repo of DS and A in about 5 different languages including plain C++. I do not need to be offended by such notions since they server no purpose on the frontend, and neither do other devs. If anything it should be a casual conversation during the interview, not a basis for employment.
Recruiter: .........thank you for explaining this to me, I am sure I can bring it up to the agencies doing the reviews and interviews. Are you still interested?
Me: Are they going to give me a coding assignment for a project or a bs question like what I mentioned?
Him: I don't know
Me: then I am not interested12
Virtual interview starts and the HR lady:
Oh I was expecting a man!!
(I wasn’t expecting you get surprised!?)
Haven’t you ever worked with female developers in your company or know that it is actually not big news? Some companies have a lot of female engineers including the ones I worked for.
In Central Europe in this age of time?
She was a lovely lady though. I just said
I hope you’re pleasantly surprised 😊14
Manager: We will be building a new app. THIS TIME EVERYTHING MUST BE ABSOLUTELY PERFECT, ANYTHING LESS THAN TOP QUALITY WORK WILL BE REJECTED!!
*Not even 2 days into the new project*
Manager: Ok that’s good enough, we can fix it later. Can you go quicker on the next feature? Just sacrifice a bit of quality so we get these tickets closed as fast as possible. I said we can fix it later. Getting tickets closed asap is top priority.
If you don't let the company enslave you then you're not a team player.
Also, you're definitely NOT flexible!8
Client: "Can you add some logos to the homepage?"
Me: "Sure, I've just added it, take a look at staging."
Client: "Great, we can move it to live"
** 5 days later after it being moved to live and telling them I'm going on holiday. **
Client: "EMERGENCY change logo now, we need to change x logo. These logos look crappy too. How did this happen?"
Fuck this. I'm not employed by you, you don't have any right to speak to me like that. Especially after working tirelessly for your company.
**sent email back explaining how to upload files**
Told them not to contact me unless it's technically related.3
Tech startups, an analogy:
After 18 years going from help desk teams to NOC teams, telecom engineering and all manner of startups in between I have concluded the following:
Imagine wanting to start an aerospace company because you know how to fold a paper airplane, but not how to actually design and engineer an actual craft that will pass basic air worthiness checks.
That’s 99% of “tech” companies.
Discuss. I’ll make drinks.9
It fucking infuriates me when the docs mention to create a certain config file "xyz.json" but completely leave it to your imagination where the hell this fucking file should be placed!
Come on, I'm not getting paid for detective work, fucking imbeciles.4
Oh, nice. Now Windows 11 doesn't just fuck up AMD CPUs with lack of performance, but also SSDs. NTFS at its finest, but see the tags.23
I often hear
You will be promoted as lead if you act like it or take charge
That is really stupid, there is difference between responsibly and effort.
Why would i put effort for things that i am not getting paid for ?
You’re not just an imposter. You’re the trickster goddess, the deception prodigy, the mastermind. The supervillain surrounded by mere mortals.
So I got laid off because they told me I wasn't communicating enough.
For what I encountered
For how I feel About after got laid off:
In the begining of time, when The Company was small and The Data could fit in some fucking excel sheets, Those Who Came Before implemented some java tool to issue invoices, notify customers and clear received payments.
Then came the Time Of The Great Expanse, when The Company grew to unthinkable levels. Headcount increased with each passing day, and The Data shows that everything was going great!
But when the future seemed bright, came The Stall-Out. The days when The Company could not expand as fast as it did before. And Those Who Came Before left, abandoning their Undocumented Java Tool to its own luck.
Those who came after knew nothing of the inner workings of the Undocumented Java Tool. They knew only that the magical Jar would take a couple fucking excel spreadsheets and spit out reports and send emails like magic.
And those were The Dark Days.
In the darkness, The Data grew to be a monster. Soon a fucking excel spreadsheet could not hold The Data contained any longer. Those Who Came After, fearing the wrath of The Undocumented Java Tool, dared not mess with its code. Instead, they fucking cut away the lowest volume transactions from the fucking input spreadsheet, and left the company to report the unbilled invoices as "surprise losses". Fucking script kiddies, were Those Who Came After.
Then, at The Darkest of Days (literally, Dec 21st), marched into the project The Six Witchers, who fear not the Demon of Refactoring.
This story is still unfolding. Will The Six Witchers manage to unravel the mysteries of The Undocumented Java Tool? Will they be able to reverse engineer the fucking black box, and scale it's magic into a modern application?
Will they decrease revenue forecasting error by at least 2% in a single strike?
Only the future will tell.12
I started to get super pissed off to people saying you don’t need a college, masters degree to get an IT job. Instead go and gain practical knowledge, showing your practical certificates projects is much better than a having a degree that doesn’t prove if you can do the job or not.
Is a degree absolutely necessary to get a job? No, I agree on that. You can tear yourself apart to be known make projects loads of people contribute in GitHub spend maybe years on practicing and creating stuff for your portfolio..
But excuse me what do you think people do in college studying degrees? Are we getting it from the shop in the corner on a Saturday?
Respect people’s achievements and titles. Especially Masters degrees push you hard, make you sweat apart from loads of courses you work at least a year on a practical project, dissertation, thesis and only pass if it is your own opinion and findings. It is not like a multiple choice exam certificate or you study watch videos for few months and create a web page.
Don’t throw shit on people’s efforts and accomplishments without knowing how it is achieved just because you don’t have it.
Yes it is not necessary. Does it make you learn? Yes! Is it practical? Yes! Does it help you get a job? Hell yes! Why most companies look for degrees? Do you think they might know what it takes to get it and the skills and knowledge you gain?
Don’t come and say in IT degrees not worth it without even knowing how to draw UML. Without knowing IT management you go and be a leader later on, no clue on how to manage projects, people and soft skills sweeping the floor.
It doesn’t matter if you are a YouTube celebrity or a president. What does the title say? “Master” now go, respect and digest it! Don’t be a sour loser.
Ooh I am fierce today and not done yet13
People/companies talking about ooh we want gender diversity we want more female software developers, IT professionals etc
You talk the talk, do you know how to walk the walk?? Do you know how to deal with female engineers?
I am a hardcore engineer worked and studied majorly with men for years. I lead, managed teams had my own company worked as a consultant for years.
Then I got into the IT industry as developer later. I was completely against the idea of being female would make any difference or you would be treated differently.
Finally I had my own enlightenment and stopped resisting that idea.
Some treatments made me think what are these guys doing? Don’t treat me like your sister. I am not your sister. Don’t see the femininity or looks. I am not a Merrilyn Monroe to say oooh you are great you know soo much. I am not paid for that act, I do my job! It’s same as yours mate.
Don’t underestimate me or try to preach me as if I am a cute little girl. Don’t show off and boost your ego next to other guys.
Now I regretfully I agree the ladies ranting about male dominance and getting different treatment in IT.
I am literally trying to avoid red nail polishes or red lipstick god forbid. Maybe I should put some fake beard and a belly, loose jeans with an energy drink in hand. Here comes the expert IT professional, already ticking a box.
Honestly you are not taken seriously most of the time. If you are a guy then they are all ears..And those guys talk about they want gender diversity blah blah
You feel like a ghost when you express your opinion. You are not taken into account even when you have a comment or suggestion.
Even humiliated by a guy giving me a speech about how to be a good developer next to a manager. Look buddy I am not a yesterday’s child. I am at your age. I haven’t come to this position by jumping around picking flowers in a field. If I was a man, would you dare saying those to me? There could be a street fight coming.
LinkedIn selfie takers with body show offs putting ooh I am an IT recruiter as a female I got into IT. You can do it too. (don’t get me wrong I respect that achievement that’s good) but those girls get thousands of likes and applauses, you are working in IT for years people say they are seeking for. Your technical post doesn’t even get 20 likes. Your encouraging comment on a guy’s post isn’t even acknowledged. You are not even taken into account. Am I a ghost or something?
Honestly I don’t understand.
What do you mean by gender diversity? What do you want here?
Leave this gender bullshit. Look at the knowledge you don’t even know what equality means. It’s not having even numbers of genders. It is respecting knowledge and hard work regardless. Listening and acknowledging without judgement. Looking beyond male, female or others
Companies that say we want to have more females, you don’t come and knock on my door either. You are already stating a difference there. Attract with indifference don’t come and tell me you are a female we want more females here.
I’m telling you this sector is not getting proper gender equality for 25 years. Talk is there but mentality is not yet there.
I am super pissed off and discouraged today. I don’t even get discouraged that easily. Now I understand some women in IT talking about insecurities. I am on the edge of having one, such a shame.
Don’t come at me now I would bite!
This is my generalisation yes. Exceptions apply and how good it would have been if those exceptions were dominant.36
The demand of most employers these days are "I pay you money, do as I say" . Sometimes I wonder am I an employee or a hooker ? You hired me because your project wouldn't be possible without the skillset I possessed. My job is not to please you.
I can feel my virginity violated since the first day of my employment, because I am F**ked everyday working with these turds .13
Special 2022 greetings to the last of us who still run truly static websites: update your footer template, recompile, upload.7
So I just found out that my colleague who I often have to work with does not use a debugger to troubleshoot any bugs at all. Actually, he does not even run or test his code locally either with prints or something similar. He just commits java code directly on bitbucket, no source control, without making sure it compiles and then he runs a CI provided by devops that takes 4 freaking hours to run because he bloated that shit up somehow.
I suggested politely to help him find a more efficient approach and to use my hardware setups for speeding up his work because I assume it must be pretty painful to work with, but he just refused.
That and those "seniors" with 10 years Linux development XP in the embedded field who don't know basic commands like ls, cat and touch and code in notepad.
Fucking me, who the hell am I working with and can someone please end me?6
Story of WTF happened to my job
During my employment in (name censored) was stressful, They claimed I didn't complete my task on time which they constantly remove me from git and documentation(which have to follow their style of returning data), I kept emailing, slack, WhatsApp calls them, mostly and predictably got ghosted and blocked.
So How the fuck am I supposed to push my code or code without the documentation (I can actually, prevent refactoring every time, following the documentation is the good way to go.)
On the sprint review, they will complain about me not committing and pushing the code. (I did commit locally, but can't push, they removed me from the fucking repo) and not done.
Tried reasoning, telling the obvious reasons with them, doesn't work. They come out the second reason of me "NOT COMMUNICATING". Sometimes I can get to git merge from dev to my branch and get tonnes of fucked up code. I reviewed the code, and I can't tolerate it.
Lately, I overheard them mocking and cheering me about to get fired over a zoom meeting (I was in there, they forgot to remove me). Their conversation is about me being a coloniser, a jerk, betraying Chinese ancestors for being not Chinese enough.
I was like: "Why the fuck does their conversation sound like they are tucked in the Qin dynasty?"
Frequently I got labelled as unprofessional.
How is cussing about my ancestors, personal and life a professional behaviour?16
We were in a meeting today and it came my turn to talk.
me: "I am working on something not fun. I am tracking down a bug in X software that a customer has issues with."
boss: "It is like an easter egg hunt."
me: "Yes, but instead of eggs I am going to find a pile of crap."
me: "Its not chocolate..."
The original code I am wading through is very likely my boss' code.3
Completely 100% not dev related.
But really I need the opinion of smarter people. Tell me how I don't make fun of the way people look, talk down on others regardless of <whatever>. Try to be as nice as possible to everyone, but the moment I say that I am not attracted to overweight people (women in my case since I am a heterosexual male) am I suddenly fatphobic and hate fat people. First of, phobia means fear, and I can assure people that fat people don't trigger any fear response from my end.
Nor do I disregard them as humans just cuz of them extra kilos. But suddenly because I explain how I can't be sexually attracted to someone that is overweight am I fatphobic?
This shit baffles me.54
Current lappy got about 4GB RAM and not enough cores. I can't even run krita without it slowing down more the more I work on a file.
It would be frustrating if only I wasn't so depressed.
So yeah, due to being broke and lack of nerves, I'm gonna completely stop working on the comic for now.25
!rant Security training at work comes in the form of a serialized TV show where each episode concerns some security topic kind of tangentially and ends with a “REMEMBER… “ followed by the lesson you were supposed to get from the episode.
I kind of love it. A lot. I actually look forward to security training, and I’m not the only one. They stagger the release so you can’t binge watch all the seasons at once and you get three episodes at a time. 😂1
Wanna know why Windows sucks so much? It's because of the Windows users. No, really!
Windows user: But but but I can't switch away from Windows because MIMIMI!
Microsoft: Ah, is that so? Then why should we even try to make (and pay for) an effort?4
The company I'm working with is looking for a designer. Today the founder told me that "We're looking for a [kiki] of design".
If that's not recognition, I don't know what is.6
During job interview
Me : Am I going to maintain old solution?
Interviewer : Of course not.
PM : Please fetch project X from SVN5
Sometimes I wish I was driven by positive reasons, and not by self-loathing and sense of worthlessness. I didn't have an actual vacation for over 3 years.
I am now in Thailand with my parents, and I am working my ass off to meet IROS/RAL deadline instead of chilling. The urge to continue working is really compulsive. I am very tired.
On a brighter note, the early experiments I ran look promising9
[wordpress trigger warning]
Had an idiotic colleague who re-implemented the insert image function as a shortcode. A “senior php developer”. No, I’m not kidding.
Him: “But this way we can set a class”
Me: “As you can with the standard mode”
Him “No you can’t”
Him (smiling): “well why don’t you remove my stuff then?”7
For the first time I tried to use WordPress. I spent almost 30mins. Now I decided I should not use that again in my life. Fuck WordPress.4
So I've got my first sort of proper gig. I'm tasked with writing...
A goddamn minecraft plugin in java.
Well, it's actually rather fun strangely enough. My ideas of payment were not declined but rather accepted, the other devs are nice and everything is going well for now.
Also: Do expect a mental breakdown post next week or so8
In 2017 I had a reeeeally sweet offer for a Java-gig. Equity, quarterly evaluations with potential raises, exciting products, world class experts as colleagues and all. The catch was relocating across the entire country, and due to some family health stuff, I was forced to decline.
Today I learned that the company is valued at about $150M. The equity alone would have been worth around 1.5M today, and thats not all. One of the founders are giving away about 15% of the shares to the employees, landing them about 100K in equity each.
And here I sit, wondering about what the next electric bill will be...10
As someone into the cutting edge research in tech, it is my pleasure to inform you that I finally bought a pair of Bluetooth headphones. 😁
Yeah, nah, the irony ain't lost on me.30
The device looks cool and everything....but their reason we should buy it is the winner for me. Not only is that never a problem...but also, spot the mistake17
New opportunity coming to the people who try. Got this opportunity, i better not suck at it. Give it regular time everyday to earn atleast some title before my degree.9
Problem: ugly-ass php spaghetti code that has a technical debt of 16(!!!) years. I mean, it's so spaghetti that has two legacy frameworks that talk to each other inside the same monolith.
Observation: after two months my colleagues, trying to refactoring stuff, they were able to touch so little stuff that it almost made no difference.
How much is worth a rewrite? Because i don't think i can make a difference on a codebase so messy.
I know that rewrite is not the answer 99.9999% of the time, but i have tons of doubts here.16
Facebook is a giant piece of shit. Not only is their platform a massive contributor to mental illness, even their API's are fucking garbage. I'm trying to use their ads API and what it does is it hijacks the entire fucking request so you can't even extract data from the request after calling it. Fuck Facebook and everything they've ever "contributed" to society.5
HOW THE FUCK

Dart helps you craft beautiful, high-quality experiences across all screens
... Not my screen though
I forgive them 😊1
I'm forced by my job to use this fucking unusable piece of horse shit also know as a Windows operating system.
And it's not only that I have experienced every fucking corner case bug that is possible to occur in our universe.
Not only that that for last 2 years I seen more blue screen than blue sky.
Not only that forced updates fucked my schedules so many times that now I'm really *afraid* to turn off my computer off because I have zero guarantee that I will be able to restart it in a reasonable amount of time.
No, neither of those broke me.
The thing that kills me everyday is, piece by piece ...
WHY THE FUCK THERE IS NO SINGLE, USEABLE, SANE TERMINAL EMULATOR ON WINDOWS
I JUST WANT TO TYPE SOME COMMANDS, COPY/PASTE TEXT AND SCROLL

GO TO HELL MICROSOFT
I WANT MY LINUX BACK9
I'd rather take a swim in a moist human massgrave than fix any more bugs of this cancer-inducing "selfmade" CMS developped by a "company" that shall not be named.
Sadly I am not aware of any such pit in the neighborhood, thus more bugfixing it is... yay ⚰️5
v2.0.22 is now officially LIVE in GMT+2. Congrats and good job everybody!
Let's not fuck this one up, shall we? Let's keep our shit together this time.4
I hate my freelancer life.
1. No weekends
2. No particular time to close
3. Work for 12 to 14 hours without sleep sometimes
4. Keep explaining the dumb clients about how development is not wordpress.
Its all fucked up. I have no life.
My average Lines of code this month is around 700 LOC/day. Whereas the average that showed on internet is 100 LOC/day.
I have choosen a hellish life.10
Registering a new account for microsoft teams:

Hoarder Bug Exterminator
Fixing code for projects that have not been refactored ever in 20+ years.
I was skimming a FedEx page to track a shipment when out of the corner of my eye I see “Watch list” and almost had a merry little panic attack because I apparently did not get the requisite amount of sleep for rational thought.
FedEx, our ideas of watch list are very different.19
!rant Taking the kittens (they’re like 5-6 years old at this point but they’re always going to be kittens to me) to our old vet (45 minute drive from where we currently live) in a couple hours when they don’t like car rides or the vet and when we know they need to get vaccine shots and we’re not allowed to go inside with them. It’s the first time we’ve ever taken them to the vet and not been able to be there with them. 😭 I’m so nervous/anxious/scared for the little guys.
Wish me luck, friends.4
I ever tell you that time about how much I hate Apple products?
Have to integrate Apple Pay into our app. I'm a linux user but I need an Apple product to actually use Apple Pay. So I cannot test without an Apple product. In this case I need Safari. Ugh.
Had to go pick up a Mac Book Pro from office today just for this project.
I could never use Apple products as my primary device. it would take me weeks just to become proficient at navigating around.
My boss is an Apple evangelist so we had a wonderful conversation today.9
Company Motto: “Business is simple, hire amazing people and let then do their thing”
Company Culture: You can’t do that!! It’s really hard and expensive to hire people with those skills! How would we replace you or save money by continuing to not give you a raise if you did that!?1
this is mostly how i feel today. we're all aware not much actually changes, but y'know, we survived this year, we get to celebrate a new cycle and hope for new and better things4
This may be the best Stack Overflow comment I have seen when learning SQL.
How old is Frank? I don't know (null).
How old is Shirley? I don't know (null).
Are Frank and Shirley the same age?
Correct answer should be "I don't know" (null), not "no", as Frank and Shirley mightbe the same age, we simply don't know1
So the other day I randomly checked out a few job postings on some recruiting agency’s website. Didn’t even sign up or anything.
The very next day I get a call from them. The person on the phone tells me they noticed I had visited their website and was wondering if I was interested in applying to any of the offers. Even as a developer I was totally taken aback as to how they managed to track me down based on a single visit.
I believe I ended up on their website by clicking on a link on LinkedIn. I’m assuming it’s via LinkedIn that the managed to get my info (phone etc.). All in all I’m not extremely surprised. But to me it’s downright creepy and it makes me feel like I’m being stalked. Also it makes recruiters look totally desperate and I’m not sure I would want to entrust them with the responsibility of handling my career5
Company: people are not taking holidays, let's have after work party midweek so they have to take a day off.

Dear modern browsers: The site I'm working on is NOT Portuguese. Don't offer to translate it when there are literally zero non-English words in it.
Stories from Gary #000
Short background info:
So I'm working as a game dev for 3 years now and by now I can say that I've seen some shit. Mostly because of one of our game designers, let's call him Gary.
So Gary, from here on called GDG (Game Designer Gary), is a regular game designer (GD). His job is to come up with new game ideas, commission the assets, make sure that translations are done, etc. - simply put, he has to get a lot of shit together before we can start working on a new game.
Would be no problem at all if GDG wasn't lazy as shit and would work for once in his life. No dev really wants to work with him anymore, since he's known for calling a game or any issue "ready for development" even if half the assets or specs are still missing.
Let's move on to a particular situation that happened a couple of months ago.
I had an issue assigned to me, which was about implementing the translations for a new game. As I read the issue and checked if everything I needed was given, I noticed that the most important part was in fact missing - the keywords for the translations.
So, I called GDG and asked where I could find the keywords, to which he responded "Oh, I'm working on them right now... and by the way I got a weird bug with the translation program. Can you come check it out?". Sigh. I went over to his office, rambling about how I should be able to help him with a program I rarely use and which was written ages ago.
As soon as GDG saw me coming roundbthe corner, he started explaining how the keywords aren't ready yet, since the program to create translations and their keywords won't let him name a translation.
"I can create new translations, but I can't assign a keyword to them."
"Okay, show me what you did", I told him, eager to leave.
He started to type the keyword, which turned out to be huge ass long and immediately I noticed a little counter, like "x/50", directly beneath the text field started to count up with every new character GDG typed. See where I'm going with this? HE WASNT ABLE TO RENAME A TRANSLATION BECAUSE HE WAS TOO LAZY TO FUCKING READ AND CONCENTRATE FOR ONCE. Sorry for that, but even thinking about it gets me angry again.
To some this might sound like nothing, but it really got to me at this point. Maybe it will become more understandable as I post more GDG stories.
tl;dr: A 40 something year old man, who's been working in his job for over 10 years wasn't able to use a program which he daily uses and asks me for help, only to find out he's a complete dipshit.4
It's official, the "front end dev" doesn't know how to code.
And it's not a "Well I don't know JS because I use React." scenario, no. He has almost no idea of coding.
What was he thinking trying to build the front end of a very complex app with just HTML, CSS and stupid copied and pasted snippets?4
Why hello there, your profile mentions you're not looking for an offer and lists PHP as a technology you don't want to work with.
Boi, are you in luck, cause I have that sweet PHP offer for you4
Microsoft is slowly turning office 365 into employee spyware. Im not surprised just disappointed.14
However pathetic it may sound, I haven't. I've made good acquaitances, yes. But friends...
Last I had friends was in my first uni years. Long, long ago. After that - they went on their path and I - on mine. Work, family, personal projects and sometimes moto rides - that's my life now. Not really much time for friends. Not really much time to make any. Not enough time in a day to think/worry about it, not to mention reconsider my priorities/choices.5
Government applications meant to handle private data made in the laziest way using cordova. Hell yea. Bonus points for using the developers account with his first and last name as publishing company to put the app on playstore and not their own official one (not that they have one). Whats not to love. Cant wait to beautify that js to find out that the calls are http and not https.3
WE TEST ON THE STAGING SITE. I DON'T BUST MY ASS WITH A SEPARATE STAGING API AND HTTPS://STAGING.WHATEVERTHEFUCKYOUWANTOBUILD.COM/..., SO THAT YOU CAN MESSAGE ME THAT NOTHING IS WORKING. THAT IS BECAUSE YOU ARE NOT ON THE STAGING SITE. IF I HAVE TO REMIND YOU AGAIN, I AM NEVER TALKING TO A NON TECHNICAL PERSON AGAIN
THIS IS THE FIFTH TIME. ITS LITERALLY LIKE A BROKEN RECORD SO WHY DO I EXPECT ANYTHING TO CHANGE, EVERY CLIENT IS THE SAME, EVERY TIME, GOD I HATE IT MAKE IT STOP4
“You know what is not fungible, scarce and valuable to me? My time! So if you wish to persuade me NFT are a good thing, you should pay me a fair amount of real money to make me listen your bullshit”
From now on this will be my standard reply to NFT harassment.
Feel free to use, edit and share with others.5
Me: Explaining what I do for a living (strip's title)
So true though as most of the workday is not coding...
Or is that how you explain all that typing (coding) to a layman?3
Paying minimum wages as become the norm in Portugal.
No matter that I have the same formation time in my area, plus experience, than a doc or engenheir everyone wants to pay minimum wages...
I'm so tempted to ask the next interviewer (usually an engineer) if his also getting minimum wage....
I'll do one year at my corrent company and will probably get out of this Europe's Ass.
Sorry for the bad typing. Working till 8 am11
2year project got cancelled, not because of covid, not because of budget reason, but because a new politician got elected that is against our company industry.7
I'm so done with all the covid talk.
Its all that's ever talked about and you don't get a break.
As if it wasn't bad enough to have that one friend who constantly has to remind everyone how politically educated he is, and how much he hates the neo[whatever the fuck], now he has to remind everyone about his opinions on the vaccine.
No one fucking asked, shut the fuck up.
Your opinions do not matter.3
Started a new job last week. Pays a tad below average for position, but i get training time and budget for anything i want.
So far i have had few days of company introduction, and now a week for training courses related to position.
I have not seen any code yet, brought no value in, just joined.
Massive green flag to me.
Anyone wanting to improve OpenSSL fulltime?
Understanding of Cryptography or ability to write secure code are not required...
I'm not a dev, but I visit this site due to its overwhelming sanity. That said, I have two bests:
First: Never thought I'd say it, but having Windows as opposed to Mac has continued to keep me from going batshit cray. I liken my relationship with Mac to a marriage that started out wonderfully and wound up in a field of acrimony, broken promises, and literal hatred.
Second: This site, as mentioned above.7
Submitted a ticket to the 3rd party IT provider today. Just like they always do they close the ticket instantly saying they did the work when they didn’t do anything.
Except this time they went one step further. They documented that they had a conversation with me and that they convinced me that I didn’t need the work done.
No such conversation occurred. I have not changed my mind nor have been given any reason to. They just want their ticket times to appear as fast as possible and are willing to lie through their teeth to achieve that.
Prepare for a shit storm motherfuckers.2
So I met this person via a social platform.
They were absolutely silly and weren't able to hold a conversation. So I, like a normal person, just stopped trying to keep things alive.
Over the years, I have realised and learnt that if a person is interested in being friends, they'd put in efforts and I alone will not have to drag things on my shoulder.
I started cutting out people right, left, and center who I felt were taking advantage of me or using me in some way or another.
I ended up saving a lot of time and energy. I no longer feel drained or anxious about something not working out. Not dragging saved me from draining.
Anyway, they reach out to me again after few weeks and I was like let's give it a try to establish a friendship, because befriending people is my weak point.
The cycle repeats. At first I thought it must be because of the asynchronous nature of the platform so I drop my Telegram Id in case they preferred an IM approach.
I swear in the name of sweet lord, the retard does the same behaviour. So, I stopped communication.
And one fine day, the person tells me that they lack social skills and want to learn how to make friends and stuff.
Very fair point. So, me being me, gave them a few tips and critically pointed out their behaviour on how they reply with a one liner after every 2 or 3 business days.
Absolutely no change in their behaviour. They kept texting me the same.
At this point, I was like why am I doing it? I could find better people easily. Because for me, communication is everything. I cannot function without a good communication between two living beings.
So, I asked them why are they even trying to learn social skills when they barely implement it and don't want to change to which they reply saying that so they can use it to befriend people and network to getter better job opportunities.
I fuck them off.
And fuck such people who have intentions, are not clear enough about it, and play people for their own selfish gains.
And this where another learning I got from @scout is have boundaries.
Why do all good people in my life leave? Damn it! I need those good people back and be friends with them and not retards who cannot even communicate beyond one liner.10
I've ditched Python for Julia for scientific computing. Documentation is definitely not as great but I find it so much more convenient.4
My first contact with an actual computer was the Sinclair ZX80, a monster with 512 bytes of ram (as in 1/2 kbyte)
It had no storage so you had to enter every program every time and it was programmed in basic using key combinations, you could not just write the commands since it did not have memory enough to keep the full text in memory.
So you pressed the cmd key along with one of the letter keys and possibly shift to enter a command, like cmd+p for print and it stored s byte code.2
If your “solution” fixes the test case which is failing, it does NOT guarantee that it is the correct fix. You don’t just blindly change whatever piece of code you like to make just the test case pass. You actually also need to analyse the code and ensure that the rest of the intended functionality is still intact.3
"I'm a recruiter for this company that does mostly finances. It's a very stable company. It's over a hundred years old."
That sounds nice, but I can't help but wonder the abyss of legacy codebases a company that old can have. Specially since it's not a dev agency.8
I'd say it was when I did a Codereview and the dev said that he doesn't really know how the code works and he doesn't quite know what it's purpose is supposed to be.
We are talking about less then 200 lines, all written by himself, this is not copied code.1
I think I’ve applied to 5 jobs that show up as “remote” now only to get halfway through a screening call and find out “oh, we’re looking for people in Albuquerque”.
Are my expectations out of whack? If you’re looking for someone in your city, you’re not looking for someone remote. You’re looking for a local worker who just has an office that’s not on your balance sheet.
Is it semantics?
Am *I* the bastard?5
That time when I ranted about wanting to commit suicide but not having enough energy to go and buy a gun.
That day in the evening, I asked my GF: "I think that the whole life is a humongous rationalization on top of biological avoidance of death".
She has an untreatable neurological disease. She told me "I found out it's a consensus among different philosophers. It absolutely is. I just prefer not to think about it".7
So about two months ago in my consulting firm I was asked to replace a colleague on a project (node and Angular). The project is only a few months old but it’s already a total clusterfuck. DB is very poorly designed. It’s supposed to be a relational database but there’s not a trace of a foreign key or any key for that matter and I’ve seen joins like tableA.name = tableB.description (seriously, that’s your relation??). The code is a mess with entire blocks of code copied from another project and many parts of the code aren’t even used. He didn’t even bother renaming variables so they would make sense in the context they were shamelessly thrown into. The code is at best poorly typed if not typed at all.
During our dailies I sometimes express my frustration with my other colleagues as I very politely allude to my predecessor’s code as being hard to work with. (They are all “good friends" with him). I always get the same response from my colleagues: "yeah but you’ve gotta understand Billybob was under a lot of pressure. The user stories were not well defined. He didn’t have time to do a proper job". That type of response just makes me boil inside.
Because you think I have time to deal with this shit? You don’t think I’m working with the same client and his user stories that are barely intelligible? How long does it take to write type definitions for parameters going into a function? That’s right, 30 seconds at most? Maybe a minute if it’s a more elaborate object? How much time do you think you’ll save yourself with a properly typed function or better yet an interface? Hard to tell but certainly A LOT MORE than those 30 seconds you lost (no, the 30 seconds you INVESTED) in writing that interface!!!
FUCK people with their excuses! Never tell me you don’t have time to do a proper job! You’ve wasted HOURS of my time just because you were too fucking lazy to type your functions, too lazy to put just a little more thought into designing your tables, too lazy to rename a variable so that it’s name actually makes sense where it’s being used. It’s not because you were short on time. You’re just lazy!
Honestly so fucking excited, been going through the application process to start a (UK) level 4 apprenticeship and I am through to the last round! Got my last interview with the programming team in January when I'll know if I got it or not.2
This is not joke but fact
More than a year ago I write code without tests, I must confess its frustrating trying to debug without proper testing. testing is painful I must admit but you can't compare the confident you have on your code with the pains when writing tests.
About a year ago I wrote a whole software without tests and this words from a friend hunted me everyday till date he said, what cannot be tested cannot be trusted. Wise words.7
"Old Person" (noun):
Someone who refuses to wear earplugs, headphones or other personal hearing aid audio devices while demanding, but not paying attention to, a living room television set on the loudest possible volume.2
"Upgraded" to Visual Studio 2022 and receiving this error several times a day:
TFS Error: TF30063 You are not authorized.
Only solution is to close->re-open VS.
I think I'm 10 restarts away from losing my mind.5
had to redo my company's entry form, for some reason (some reason being their databases are all redundant and no one talks to each other).
was filing the form and had to attach a file, and the form reset 😑
not just that, but the form also asked for my birthday, my age and my age group, separately, and instead of having a dropdown to select my state, there was a radio buttons list 🤦♀️
i seriously wanna punch whoever did that form, honestly3
My LinkedIn status is set to "not interested for work offers" so recruiters won't bother me. So I thought..
Recruiters be like: well screw that, I'll use the connect button and push my stupid generic message into his face anyways.6
Not sure if I found a red flag or a green flag…
“The candidate needs to know react well. No, using npx create-react-app is not enough!”
On a first sight one may think: “oh cool they search someone with in depth knowledge”
On a second thought, tho…
- Am I going to need to start many react projects in the role? Don’t think so.
- if I am… am I forbidden to use cra? Why? 🤔
- how is not using a bootstrapper a sign of “deep knowledge”?
Sounded interesting at first, but the more I think about it, the more I think this request is a red flag.9
Who the fuck at google thought it was a good idea to not let you log out from a single account in gmail when multiple are logged in in the browser. You have to log out of all of them all or not at all. And it is a new change, i can remember being able to do that previously. Just why?2
!rant Bought a fertility hormone test and so I have to wake up early tomorrow to lancet two (or more!) fingers and bleed on some index cards (not literally index cards, probably) before mailing them to a lab. Fun times, fun times. 😅6
If you have a new Alienware, I highly recommend not to try installing Ubuntu on it. I can't even describe how many levels of hell I went through to get stuff working, and how every Ubuntu base update gives me a panic attack.
From Ubuntu not installing with RAID settings, then not being able to boot in GUI mode because Nvidia drivers, to built-in keyboard, speaker and mic not working.
Praise the Ubuntu lord, now everything is working, but I still can't adjust the rgb keyboard colors :(25
Got blames for 2 hours because our product went down.
Because the provider of license managment went down.
Well, now I put in place a "fuck you" work around. If licensing provider is down, people can still connect and use product (But not create new accounts).
There is a commercially sold ERP solution that has it's DB schema in excel and Other documentations in MS Word. And its not even properly structured, no schema diagrams, last updated for a 4 year old major release 😒😫.
I have to develop a custom module for it and that requires building an ActivexDLL Project in VB fucking 6 😭😭 .
Tell me if you want ss in comments.5
Follow up to my other rant https://devrant.com/rants/4994932/...
I have finally fixed the bug i couldnt fix for over several weeks. I was just missing a fucking if statement check. Not expecting this to work, i compiled, tested and it worked perfectly on the first fly.
Immediately i shit you not have i broken down crying. Sobbing in tears. Uncontrollably crying down on my table for several minutes and cant refocus to continue coding. I have NEVER cried because of a fucking bug fix! But i have also NEVER had a problem so much difficult that i needed several weeks to fix it!
this year i finally found a job where I don't feel like dying, and it pays well. things are going so smoothly that I'm a bit weirded out, in a good way.
the work as a dev requires creativity and is mentally exhausting, but i got a nice routine going on (not a lot of programming, mostly database maintenance), and even with the high pressure I'm still fine :)
And so.. I have noticed.. every time I ignore Windows updates for a little while.. the laptop just starts shitting. It gets so fucking slow that you can’t even move the cursor properly. So you have to force shut down the laptop and turn it ON.. and Windows starts updating!
Not at all irritating 😊3
Sends 2 photos to Photos.google.com from phone app. Attempts to sign-in to photos.google.com on PC. Google states that my Midori browser may be not secure enough or whatever to sign-in.
Goes to Gmaill.com, clicks menu icon and opens Photos. Goes straight to photos.google.com and signed-me in.
Suck fucking shit Google you cocksuckers.3
The Project Management Triangle "fast-cheap-good (pick two, you can't have all three)" is something I've never agreed with.
How would you promise to build something good & cheap?
Doing it slowly will not really make it cheaper. The cost is usually development hours. If it takes 40 hours to make a good product - doing it 2 hours per day isn't going to make it cheaper.12
Once a LinkedIn recruiter contacted me about a job position.
The same crap as always.
And then I replied: "sure I'll look"
And the recruiter sent: "?"
I replied back: "I'll take a look and give you a feedback if the positions fit me or not"
Best feeling ever2
Someone please explain to me how error messages such as
"Something went wrong" or "Critical error" are valid and provide little to no follow up explanation in the GUI, Logs, or client logs.
I get that not all error cases can be displayed on a GUI, but at least have decent error handling. Especially if your $8+ billion company.2
Manager: Speak with PersonA about ProjectX. Get back to me with feasibility and timescales.
Me: *speaks with PersonA about ProjectX*
Me: *does a few trials for more info*
Manager: Why did you not tell me you were looking into ProjectX with PersonA?
This is 2 days apart ...5
Kinda pissed. Ordered a WD red plus 8TB on November 20th from newegg along with some other stuff. He drive showed up DOA on the 26th, tested everything I could to make it work. But in the end I couldn't even get it to initialize.
Ok. No problem this happens. request a return and replacement.
Got that in today. Over 2 weeks later. Fucking EXACT same problem.
and just to make sure I'm not fucking crazy I grabbed a 1tb thats been sitting on my desk unused for years. Plugged that into my NAS. Works fucking perfectly. Even able to pull it and wipe it using my USB drive reader on my desk after. I can even fucking reinitilize it back and forth from mbr to gpt.
Not asking for replacement this time. Just refund. Gonna order directly from WD. If this one fucks up I'm switching to Seagate for a couple of years4
I’ve got the cold from hell and my last years performance review to write.
These things are fucking terrible and every time I read a cheesy corporate competency that I have to prove, I feel slightly sick.
Just got to find a way of saying ‘I spent the last year doing just enough not to get fired’ and make it sound like I’ve reinvented the wheel.
Think I might be looking for a new job soon.
I get to relieve stress and not think about anything but my breathing and how much my legs hurt.
Meanwhile, my brain can relax and work out solutions to problems I'm not thinking about.1
My goal is to find the motivation to make a MVP for a company idea I have. The chances are low but not non-existent....1
Recruiter: Hello I’m recruiting for an exciting opportunity at a rapidly growing company with loads of potential
Dev: *Looks up company on google*
Dev: Their stock has been declining for the past 2 years. 3 months ago their valuation just dropped by 80%…. How are they growing?
Recruiter: Oh that happened to every company at the end of 2021.
Dev: …I guarantee you it did not.
"Please move the logo left. The text goes a bit under."
Do you guys think people realize how unclear they are, and are just too fucking lazy to write the full spec? Or are they just so fucking stupid they don't realize I literally have no fucking clue what to do exactly with comments like these?
I guess Hanlon's razor applies here, but some days I just don't know...
Happy Friday! ☠️4
The bouba/kiki effect is a non-arbitrary mapping between speech sounds and the visual shape of objects. It was first documented by Wolfgang Köhler in 1929 using nonsense words.
happy new year everyone! not that anything ever changes, but hope is free 😅
i wish all of you a year with very little reason to rant ✨1
So some notification types are broken again (at least ++ notifs are not), ++ counts don't update again, search finds next to nothing, and the weekly doesn't work properly either (I saw wk288 topic once but can't find it anywhere now).
It still works better than the thing I'm currently dealing with.12
worst - not finding a job/internship for months
best - I now have my first dev job, and I will be graduating college and getting married this month!
> Mister BossDeveloper, I'm calling this method called "consoleLogger" and I'm not seeing anything in console, why is that happening?
> Mister IHateForALiving, it's redirected to some pm2.log file
The 180iq move: create a method, explicitly call it "PRINT TO CONSOLE" and make sure it doesn't print to console, ever.4
All these companies not going the full 100% remote and requiring one day in the office, would it kill them to do 100% remote? My current role is fully remote and were spread through many timezones and still manage to work well, why don't companies see this and give an option atleast to be fully remote for developers?12
Boss asks if the project will be finished today, I reply ‘yes’ and then realised I’d not pushed my code after working from home the previous day! Doh!1
Until today, I had assumed deploying stuff to prod would NOT be one of my responsabilities in this company. Apparently that's not the case.
Had to deploy my code and pray it didn't break anything. Why is this a big deal at all?
Well you see, there is no repository. At all. No git, no svn, not even duplicate folders. No tests, no pipeline. Just a bunch of CPanels.
Had to manually copy files and folders from the development site to the production site and partially copy a database. "Just drag and drop" were the instructions I was given.
As if using CakePHP2, PHP5 and having to parse fucking Excel files wasn't bad enough, now I have to deal with one of the worst ways to deploy code.
Fuck it, I'm switching on the looking-for-job flag on linkedin.5
By Linus, do not fear what you see
and curse not I, but those before me

Use it well, to fight against scrutiny

Not strictly a dev-goal, but anyway:
Now that I am responsible for a few people in the company I work for, my goal is to find a balance between managing and dev, and to help them develop their skills, be productive, and enjoy their work.
CRED, an Indian start-up with valuation worth Billions doesn't even have a business model.
Hear me out, countless start-ups don't have a business model but everyone can think of something that will be introduced and the most basic one is good and services in exchange of cash.
CRED, on the other hand, is popular primarily because it does not have a business model and hipsters are encouraging it because it is innovative to run without a business model.
I mean, I can't even... Damn this is beyond dumb.
Also, they only hire people from Tier I (IIT and IIM).
I once applied and got a rejection in literally 5 minutes stating that since I am not from top college, they are not interested in my profile.
I don't even know what to make of this. This boggles my mind.
For anyone interested, they were invite only and created a hype of waiting list, but then hipsters started inviting each other in masses so I guess they made it public.
Worst: being forced back into the loud distracting office, to add on to the badness the covid restrictions were not taken very seriously
Best: getting a new full time remote job and an awesome company with some awesome team mates
Bonus is I now work from home fully but can still hang out with my great former coworkers
So this might be a very long post , but i am sure most of you can relate to it .
So , the year end . Time of joy and appraisals right? You have slogged your ass off the entire year and are expecting amazing ratings. Then boom , your piece of shit sadist manager starts of his review by saying 'there are worrysome things to discuss' after not saying shit for the entire year . I am pretty new to corporate , in fact 1 year old , still managed to handle devops for a team of 130+ , majority of whom have no work apart from playing a blame game and indulging in cheap politics. I mean , bro , I am literally your son's age , i dont see the point in playing this cheap shit with me.On top of that this sadist and borderline piece of shit manager has the audacity to say that I did not raise any blockers , while I have CCed him in every fucking mail possible. How big of an a****** can you be bro?
I counter his points for 40 45 mins straight ,leaving him stuck without words for solid 10 to 15 seconds many times during the 'review meet'. This guy is in the same place working on the same shit code , which 90% of this community can't even think of. Every thing is bloody manual and apparently ' I should have tried to streamline the entire f**** process' . Cool bro , why not open a startup while I am at it ?
Then this piece of poop gives me a rating which is just above the inconsistent performer bracket :) .
I just dont get the points what do these people get by giving shit ratings and not even having valid points to back up their fuck all arguments. This guy , throughout the duration of the call did not say 1 (bloody 1 ) good thing about my efforts. Past context is majority of the smart people who were literally running their pods single handedly , were under him and were fed up with not getting hikes and appraisals.Apart from me ,everyone resigned and left with hikes as high as 50% (LOL right).
But I have a year of experience and its really difficult to perform well in 4 rounds of bs compititive coding rounds, after which I get the generic ' oh you did well bro but we are moving on with other candidates' (FFS) .
I pray that even my worst enemies don't get such managers and I hope he rots in hell.
Amen and sorry for the cussing :)
I have a complex about my nose. I was about to bite the fucking bullet and do something about it. Literally just waiting for the procedure room to be ready, when I kept asking myself wtf I was doing. Then looked at my nose again and realized that it really wasn't that big a deal. Not when compared to dealing with internal bleeding and pain for weeks, plus a painful procedure.
Even after all these years, all these accomplishments, all this experience, I'm still a dumb fuck.
Now then, I'll go put some of the money I didn't waste to good use. Like videogames, hookers, and blow. Probably just the former.6
Everytime I think I'm smarter than the compiler, I'm... absolutely not smarter than the compiler lol4
Python async is a total, unapologetic shitshow. It’s as if the design goal was explicitly to invalidate the maximum number of thoughtful stackoverflow QAs possible. Pro tip: make you sure to memorize the release dates of every minor version of python from 3.5-3.10, so that you know which stackoverflow answers are not relevant in any way to your codebase.2
Worst dev experience of the year:
So, I went to my folks' for the holidays. My old man is a hospital practitian and is still resentful because I did not want to be a doctor too.
So he made me fix the whole fucking wiring at his place over this last couple days, because "well, you choose to be a glorified electrician!"
BTW, I have three kids and am still WFH during this time. I haven't slept in a week.6
I've had a lot of jobs, and they've all employed some form of single sign-on. But all of them have required enough individual logins for various services that I had to maintain a full category for that employer in my keepass. Until now.
This company has, by far, the most comprehensive SSO I have ever seen. Perhaps it should not be surprising that it works so well, as it is 100% made in-house. But for a company of this size, that's an amazing achievement. It speaks to excellent planning, it seems to me.
Anybody else ever worked for a large company that had a truly unified SSO?2
For the love of the God and compiler. Why do tech companies keep putting finance people in charge of operations?
Everything gets reduced to a value in a spreadsheet and ifsum<pretendprofits it’s a problem.
Company just closed $40m in funding and here I am quibbling about fixed costs with some MBA holding jackass to get $200 so I can equip my team with a licenses for a better IDE.
I’m this close to saying fuck it, buy independent licenses and then expense it back to the company. It’ll cost more than bundling but that’s why I’m not in finance.2
Do you prefer working remote or in the office?
I like to view these as equal choices. I don't think offices are as bad as some people make them up to be (of course heavily depends on the environment and company!). In opposed to working remote, offices can help you focus more on work and leave work problems "at work".
While, if you're working remote, it's not unlikely for work and personal life to become so intertwined that it's hard to tell them apart anymore. It's hard to not think about work at home if home is where you work.
I believe an ideal is somewhere inbetween - not entirely remote, but not entirely office focused either. Mixing and matching seems like the one approach where you get to have most of the benefits, but with the least negatives. It doesn't seem necessary to always be at the office but it also doesn't seem good for you to always be cooped up at home.7
Probably not even the longest variable I've created...
Learn Rust and Elixir because of my hopefully new and exciting role. I want to become production ready developer for these languages as quickly as possible. But more than anything I want my new role not making me hate my profession.
And also I would like to start a long duration relationship. Can’t have it all though.3
I was in a company (if you can call it that) for 3 months but I didn't exactly have a good selection process and I was even afraid to get paid for the first month. They made me install Hubstaff (or new slavery), I was in a project that mixed too many technologies, we were not clear who was making the decisions and finally they fired me this week, you don't know how happy I am.2
I'm pretty sure I'm not the only one that will say gaming.
Because of gaming I've been in contact with computers a lot and learned a bunch of things that would become useful as the base for learning coding.
Things as simple as using and abusing the file system, file locking and files principles, Googling stuff, etc.4
For a long time I could not understand how do people put up with watching ads in Android apps. Then it dawned upon me: they grew up like this and they never had a proper classic old-school desktop experience. Back in the day it was unimaginable to have intrusive ads. I will never put up with intrusive ads. I despise it
Now even developer tools have ads, like Docker or NPM8
If you ask any sane person "hey, do you want to get some disease with fever, headache and potential risk of dying?", I doubt anyone will say "yes".
But if there exist a way to prevent it with a proven efficacy from both evidence-based medicine and science, why not get it today? I'm not even talking about covid. Why people are not getting their flu shots? How's that logic works? You mean you don't want disease, but you also don't want to take any measures to prevent it?
Every time in late autumn people get cold. For a sane person, one such case with themselves is enough to say "hey, I don't want this to happen again the next autumn". Yet people do nothing.
I can't understand this.
And this is only a flu. Hepatitis will destroy your liver and potentially will destroy your whole life, so why avoid vaccination?10
So after spending a few days creating a website to sell my Color Picker app for Windows I today decided to make it open source and free for now.
Please feel free to add features and add issues/bug fixes, etc. P.S. some features not yet finished/started ;)
I HATE being a fullstack dev. I am responsible for everything. Its so exhausting because you cant focus on one thing.
Or its just me not being able to organize things....5
My first experience with computer was when I was 4/5 years old. We had DOS computer. I did not know anything that time. How to start game or anything. So my dad wrote down steps on my notebook for starting the 'Dave' game. I played that game nearly 2 years, along with 'Prince'. This brings lot of dos memories. :)2
Today I want to put an age-old question to rest. What is art and what is not? What's the difference? In art world, there is actually a consensus that was reached in the second half of 20th century.
First, the audience has no merit to decide what's art and what's not, as art has inherent characteristics. So whether a piece is art or not is left for the artist to decide.
But the artist too cannot just call anything they make art. There is just one criterion — if only the art piece itself is enough to justify its making, and the artist sees it as the only award they need for making it, it's art. Otherwise, it's not.
"But wait, that's not entirely correct, this is incomplete", you say. Well, it's in fact complete, but because our society progressed way faster than our languages, we're having a hard time to describe novel complex things with words. Language can't keep up with rising complexity.
We use "horseless carriages" instead of "cars" when we describe anything complex enough. The good explanation of how language works and why do we act like this is outlined beautifully in Benjamin Bratton's "The New Normal". A small book of forty-something pages, but I never spent that much time on every page in my life. The best book investment for me after "The Code Complete".22
Windows is not full of surprises. One can expect the (light) blue screen.
(Picture in comments because it stretches like yo mama pussy in the post)7
Not imposter syndrome but definitely a moment of self doubt.
Am I good enough?
Been applying for jobs and couldn't get through.
Most of my applications are in neighbouring continent and visa is the primary filter to get rejected. Thanks to COVID-19, it is even more difficult than ever.
And for those applications where I land interviews, I am being ghosted in final rounds.
Quite strange that teams don't even care to reject anymore. Just leave me hanging to assume the worst, the truth, the reality which I don't want to face.
And self doubt creeps in where I see people with average/below average capabilities and skillset are able to find better jobs.
I am not comparing myself, undermining their struggles, or playing the blame game.
All I am saying that luck plays a huge role in how things work out.
You can still fail even after doing everything right. Or am I just dumb enough to not know where I am going wrong to improve?
At this point, if I reflect on past, seems like all the offers I have got in past were purely based on luck.
I am aware that this is temporary and things shall change for good but boy, this feeling sucks.11
Just tried out Jupyter Notebook for the first time. I can see why software engineers wouldn't like notebooks, especially if you intend to actually publish the notebook as code for other people to use (please publish a module that can be imported, not a notebook that has to be hacked to pieces to make it reusable), but it's pretty handy for early prototyping or documentation.
I'm playing around with save-editing for a few GBA games as a personal project, and I used a Notebook to document the save file format with examples.3
Is there anyone here who dealt with gaming addiction? I want real world responses, succes or failure stories. Not some third rate blog post copy paste replies please.19
Been making ASP.NET sites since around 2009. Finally got the shits with microshit deprecating and obsoleting technologies every few years. Decided to switch to Node.js a few minutes ago. I don't want a steep learning curve and already know JS a fair bit so why the hell not?7
I would not consider myself an overachiever by any means, but I must say, I'm quite satisfied with my contributions this year at the new (relatively speaking) job. I got to go back to writing code almost every day, all day, and that sure as hell beats being in meetings all the goddamn time.1
My company boss wants to reorganise the team structures drastically.
Currently we have different teams for each product. And in that team we have a lead, frontend and backend developers working in sync.
The boss wants to split the teams not based on product.. but based on technology / frontend backend. Then assign the members to products based on demand.
Not sure how that is gonna turn out..6
Worst: Not landing a decent job
Best: dev-wise, none really.
It has been a rather shit year, really.15
I keep forgetting to design for the failure path, so my product is an accurate depiction of society, where everybody has a convenient excuse to not handle issues and the slightest problem ends up collapsing everything.2
I tried mate!
I'm not sure if I like it that much!
@darksideofyay got me into mate tea and I just had to try it for some unknown reason.
I didn't get the pot and bombilla because that seemed unnecessarily expensive for a tea I had not tried.
I got the tea leaves, brewed them like green tea and it didn't work at all. The flavour was lacking and it was a letdown.
But I knew I was drinking it wrong. I needed bombilla. But hold on, @darksideofyay was brewing her toasted mate like tea. So I toasted a handful of leaves and brewed it.
And yay! I like that thicc tobacco aroma. The taste profile is better than green tea but nowhere near the black teas. All in all I'm convinced I need to try it with bombilla.
Why the UI/UX guys don't understand that aligning divs is not that easy???
We cant fucking drag those things ....1
- I built a good automation mechanism with a decent UI [slackbot]
- used as few frameworks and ext libs as I could. Mostly based on bare java
- client wanted to migrate it to Spring
- got 3 peeps assigned for the migration
- 2 months later their effort failed.
- win: my project has not been molested with Spring
- i had an idea to develop smth on top of jmeter, using jmeter as a lib
- I downloaded and imported jmeter's src code
- static contexts, singletons, jmx/rmi everywhere [java is deprecating rmi support]
- not gonna happen... Not gonna build a new project on top of a legacy codebase.5
This is iOS. The “Phone” label should move and transition from white to blue. But, it’s not just one label, it’s two labels on separate screens, so for this effect to work, they should be aligned perfectly.
However, blue label is off by two pixels.
Yes, to notice that you should probably have Aspergers. Yes, I do develop user interfaces.
Yes, I basically monetized my Aspergers.3
My body decided to work against me
Last 3 days my “sleep schedule” has been “stay in bed with eyes closed until it’s morning without falling asleep”
If I go insane please tell my dog she was adopted. Ah… insanity is starting to kick in, next steps I’m defending pascal and managers…2
Yo Vanessa? I like, appreciate your interest but can you not let your bots run wild?
On a more serious note: This has happened about 10 times already.
Worst was getting head hunted into my current role at this terrific company.
Three months later I’m done with it.
It’s not shit shitty codebase, or the lack of direction that self governing teams have. It’s not the megalomaniac company owner. It’s the bullshit team mobbing and 8 hours of video calls a day.
The best part.
Come he’ll or high water I’m getting myself out before the end of the year.
I’d rather be busy and have f’k all chance of promotion than any more of this. At least the day will fly by.
Just hope I don’t make the same mistake twice, that’s become my biggest worry now.
I've copied a folder(size: 10.7GB) to external HD, and it's occupying 154GB on external disk.
yes, the folder has a lot of small files in it. but ..
Surprisingly, the same folder occupy 10.8GB on internal HD. and that drive is not compressed.
I defragmented external HD, problem still unresolved.
* allocation unit size is default(4096B) on both the disks. both are NTFS
Plz, help me, explain me... :-(13
Do NOT try to re-implement input type="number" but with nicer formatting. Do not even think about it. DO FUCKING NOT. It's a trap.11
My insomnia is killing me. No matter what time I go to bed, 4 hrs later I am wide awake and cannot fall back asleep. Today it was 1:30a I am so exhausted by afternoon I'm crumbling. Force myself to stay awake to around 9p but no matter how tired I am 4hrs later wide awake and by 1p I'm working through exhaustion. Some people can do 4hrs sleep a night. I am not one of those people. Body what is wrong with you? Why you do this to me?4
My laptop is having some power issues and it often turns off randomly.
Last time, it happened while running some git stuff and since git didn't finish properly, the whole git directory fucked up: I could not do anything with git anymore.
Later I find this dude: https://stackoverflow.com/a/...
If you're in here, Nathan VanHoudnos, just know that you save more lives than any politician1
Manager : You really shouldn't be doing that
Dev : Its in my job description
Manager : Yeah but you still shouldn't be doing it.
Dev : Who should I hand it off to?
Manager : We don't have anyone else to hand off that task to.
Dev : Ok , do I stop doing it?
Manager : 😡Of course not , it needs to get done! I'm just saying you shouldn't do it.
Dev : ????????3

Client: when can we go in production, we want x and y
Boss: how long will it take for bringing this in production on 13/12?
Me: I'll do my best to get it ready on time
Boss: Why will it take 2 workdays?
Me: because client asks x and y
Me: x and y is not ready
Boss: x and y can' t take two days, it must be ready now
Me: You said 13/12?
Boss: client wants to test before production
Me: ... 😡
Where did things go wrong here?7
I'd like to hear from developers which prefers Angular to React the reason of said preference.
I want to hear that becasue I like React way more than Angular since I find which is easier to learn (making a form with a React hook is easy while it takes days just to get a grip on Angular forms), it usually takes less code to do things, it doesn't force libraries which may not be necessary for your use case and just makes your bundle bigger (for example most things which are done in NgRx can be done just as easily with regular JS promises without the need of an external tool) and I generally prefer functional programming to OOP.
Said that I want to hear the other side, not to argue but because I want to know cases in which Angular may be a better choice than React to become a better rounded dev.10
As much as i love kotlin, i hate that you dont have static functions like in java. You have to put them in a companion object or write them in extension functions outside of the class.
Also when working with generics (lets say T) you cant call T::class.java unless you are in an inlined function and mark T as refeied. This is not the case in java i think. I havent checked.1
CSS should have a border-length property so that we can have a border that exists but does not fill up the entire length of its element.
Or am I just not aware that such a property exists?6
During the interview I was told that overtime will be paid. I'm working on a project which requires a lot of overtime so we can meet deadline. I was told that there is no budget for overtime.
I have also done 50 hours of overtime so that means 50 hours of overtime will not be paid to me.9
Lately, I've been failing the "right way up" bot checks where you have to turn to align a picture the right way up. (Is this specific to Microsoft ?) I'm not even on VPN or Tor. Or it's perhaps just a bug on their end.
I hope I'm not a bot. Well, if you think about it, we're all bots in a way, albeit significantly more complex.1
when a senior recommends you rewrite some code with their example snippet (which doesn't work), for the 3rd time, on a different ticket
i guess i should've called them out on the 2nd time this happened, instead of silently not doing so think i'd save them some dignity after telling them the first time they did this, their recommendation didn't pass automated tests4
So I'm releasing a color picker. It's meant to be more convenient to use and has a tonne of features. What do you guys honestly think about paying for a color picker?
I plan to sell it for not much, but from what I've seen, it saves a lot of time.
Im not willing to share it with you just yet as I am rewriting it from scratch, but I would like your honest opinion.11
Started working for a new company as a data lead, created a couple of basic lambda functions for a pipeline... 5 approvals and three weeks later the functions haven't even been pushed to UAT (which I'm not allowed access to).. Have I been lucky before or is this dysfunctional..?
What I "discovered" recently is, that Android will sometimes update certain apps even if you have auto-update disabled in Play Store.
Yes, just like that. I am not sure what exactly triggers the update, but it is certainly possible.
Just now I have seen that my Netflix app got auto-updated. Which is not a big deal in itself. But taking control out of the user's hands IS a big deal. This needs to stop. ❎12
I was terminated last year from BigTech. Will I ever get another job in another BigTech company?
Not a layoff. Terminated for moonlighting. Lack of judgment on my part. Trying to move past this but the events still haunt me till this day.
Not looking for sympathy. Rather, advice on how to approach job search and background checks in the future. I have big ambitions and don’t want to be an IC forever. I’m hoping this doesn’t prevent me from becoming a manager —> Director in the future.2
Play designer board games; they are multi-tenant programs, complex algorithms, modularity, meticulously balanced, and all elegantly linked to an artful UI. They are also made out of cardboard.
It is hard to play them and not become a developer that builds increasingly holistically.8
I am definitely not sean connory.
I wish linkedin recruiters and devs online would stop accusing me of being sean connory.
Why would I..I mean sean connory, who by the way I am definitely NOT...why would I be on devrant anyway?
For the last time, I am not sean connory.6
I just had a ptsd (not real ptsd) attack cause I remembered in one of my first jobs we had gulp, grunt AND webpack to build our angularjs project.
Did I fix that mess? Sure!
Will the memory of it stalk me until new year? Absolutely.1
When it comes to using XCode, I can’t be the only one who thinks it’s a stupidly large file. Took a whole day to download, I know having a WiFi speed of 20Mb/s isn’t great but on a brand new iMac with nothing else installed you’d except it to download and install pretty quickly.
Also what is it with the Mac and things not wanting to be full screen??4
ok, but this is cool. it’s an image that renders differently on apple and non-apple devices. not sure if devRant will process it so it doesn’t work, but this is cool. also a huge vulnerability for apple, but cool.9
Started working st 8AM and whoops it's 1PM. Then I read the review of a yesterday's PR and just fuck it, I'm not dealing with this today. I'm done for the day. Exhausted beyond belief.2
There is always one colleague who is not satisfied with the management and keeps complaining to other than management persons. One of my senior has mastered this ability and it always make my mindset f**ked up.4
I'm reading "A class-based reflective minimal kernel"
... do you ever get the feeling like you understand something perfectly and don't really understand it, at the same time? what does it mean?
i can even rougly imagine how this would be implemented on assembly level, but it still feels like... i don't know. it seems too straightforward and simple, i guess, so i suspect i'm not understanding it properly, since it can't be that simple...?5
Another day, another possibly stupid idea for my language. Another one of those that's been floating in my head from the start, and I want to have it, but I'm not entirely sure about its implications...?
I mean... languages already have semantic feature like this, I'm just trying to extend the principle to not have any special cases, to be completely universal and have simple syntax.
Another machine not working till morning.
That's what happens when the engineer knows a bit how to operate the machines but doesn't have a grasp on how cutting tools work...
Replacing 60€ tools every 4 hours that should last a week is not profitable.
When so many tools are spent that there's no more in stock.
Also manufactor has cutting parameters for a reason... Making the tools work 3 times faster or deeper does not mean profit, means damaged machines and tools.
As comparison, think over clocking a cpu to 7000hz and pushing it to the max 24h a day...5
Seeing ALL the members of my team finally coming into their own. One person tackled our entire not-at-all-simple CI/CD setup from scratch knowing nothing about any of it and, while not without bumps in the road, did an excellent job overall (and then did the same for some other projects since he found himself being the SME). Two of my more junior people took on some difficult tasks that required them to design and build some tricky features from the ground-up, rather than me giving them a ton of guidance, design and even a start on the basic code early on (I just gave them some general descriptions of what I was looking for and then let them run with it). Again, not without some hiccups, but they ultimately delivered and learned a lot in the process and, I think, gained a new sense of self-confidence, which to me is the real win. And my other person handled some tricky high-level stuff that got him deep in the weeds of all the corporate procedures I'd normally shield them all from and did very well with it (and like the other person, wound up being an SME and doing it for some other projects after that). It took a while to get here, but I finally feel like I don't need to do all the really difficult stuff myself, I can count on them now, and they, I think, no longer feel like they're in over their heads if I throw something difficult at them.
A few critical bugs slipped into production this year, with a few requiring some after-hours heroics to deal with (and, unfortunately, due to the timing, it all fell on me). Of course, that just tells us that next year we really need to focus on more robust automated testing (though, in reality, at least one of the issues almost certainly would not - COULD NOT - have been caught before-hand anyway, and that's probably true for more than just one of them). We had avoided major issues the previous three years we've been live, so this was unusual. Then again, it's in a way a symptom of success because with more users and more usage, both of which exploded this year, typically does come more issues discovered, so I guess it tempers the bad just a little bit.2
I’ve become so indecisive in terms of knowing what I want from my career.
All I know is what I don’t want (to end up a in management)
I’m definitely getting a new job and right now it looks like I’ve got 3 offers on the table
Option 1, a previous company I worked for. Still the same problems with the company there as before but the work was interesting and unusual. and my line manager was a good guy.
They have practically no legacy code.
Not much in the way of company benefits but they’re local and it would be nice to see friends again.
So feels like the pull to this is strong.
Option 2, a fully remote company that I’ve been referred to by an ex-workmate.
They’ve not even tech tested me because they’ve read my blogs and GitHub repos instead and said they’re impress. So just had a conversation with them. I feel honoured that they took the time to look at what I’ve done in my own time and use that in their decision.
Benefits are slightly better than option 1 (more hols)
But they’re using .net 6 and get a lot of heavy use on their system and have some big customers. I think the work is integrations to start with and moving services into docker and azure.
Option 3, even though I’ve got an offer from this one but they can’t actually explain the work until We can arrange a call next week (they recruit and then work out what team your in, but Christmas got in the way of me having a call with them straight away)
It’s working on government systems and .net is their least used stack so probably end up switching to Java. Maybe other tech stacks too.
This place has much better benefits than option 1 and 2 (more hols and more pension), but 2 days a week in office.
All of the above pay the same salary.
Having choice feels almost as bad as having no choice.
It’s doing my head in thinking about it , (even tho I might as well not think about it at all until the call with option 3 happens).
On the one hand with option 3, using a tech stack that’s new to me might be refreshing, as I’ve done .net for 10 years.
On the other hand I really like c# and I’m very good at it. So it feels a bit like I should be capitalising on that and using my experience to shape how the dev is done. Not sure I and I can do that with option 3, at least for a while.
C# feels like it’s moving forward nicely and I’m not sure I can say the same for Java or other languages.
I love programming and learning new stuff but so unable to let things go. It’s like I have a fear that c# will move on without me and I’ll end up turning into one of those devs whose skills are a decade out of date.
Maybe the early years of my career formed me in this way.
Early on I worked at a company where there was a high number of Cobol devs who thought they had a job for life.
But then redundancies came and many left. Of those who stayed they had to cross train to Java and they just couldn’t do it.
I don’t think the tech was hard for them, I think they were just so used to not learning that they could no longer adapt.
Think most of them ended up retiring after trying to learn Java for a few years.10
DoorDash wants its non-driver staff to dogfood the product.
Smart glasses. There is one kind of them, which is pretty much my childhood dream to have. A kind if glasses that I can use to display contents as I do today with my multiple monitors. Is there something like that on the market? Must work with a laptop, not a phone.
Merry Christmas or holidays or whatever's you're celebrating today for everyone here btw.3
How does on-call work for your company? Our product is mostly used in the US so any pages we get are mostly in the US time. Despite that, our team has US and EU folk and me (an EU folk) am expected to wake up middle of the night for any pages that occur. I consider this a really shit model not just for employees but for the business, but I wanted to know if this is common and I'm just not seeing the point of this.20
Continuing to learn k8s ecosystem and to achieve acceptable level
With trying eventually Helm, Argo CD and even trying to use not managed setup for k8s.
Going though books to find out theory about being SRE.
And about data intensive apps.
Learning and trying Kafka
Learning and trying FastAPI and diving in generally to async python ecosystem
Learning few more books to increase code quality and its compositioning.
Getting more practice in monitoring and logging systems with applicating them to k8s.3
So i have been thinking of buying a MacBook, but am pretty concerned since it currently does not favour my work and interests. I constantly require various emulators of lower sdks as well as emulators of TV/watch for company work. and i have interest in backend/containers , for which i have heard that m1 does not support virtualisation yet. Can anyone share there experience in this domain? Like what is the expected timeline for a processor like m1 to become mainstream and supported by softwares? its 2 years already and macbooks are currently the fastest available laptops, but only for a limited softwares
Google is doing its best but very slowly. I can see on my company's m1 that a very few emulator images are supported by armv8a but their forums say they are actively working on it. weirdly , they have a decent support for many intel processors. I think an i911th gen laptop will also come under the same budget as m1 pro 32gb but don't know which company laptop to buy that isn't a plastic hotshit. I am also not sure about ryzen based processors. heard they are very nice and power friendly , but they pose the same concerns as m1 i guess (docker/virtual box users , anyone?)
My other concern with a non apple laptop is the battery. do you peeps' laptops give any decent battery timings? I hate windows/linux laptops for many reasons, but shitty display, ugly hangs and poor battery are my main "am out" areas.
Source: currently struggling with a 3 years old HP pavillion laptop whose battery goes out in 50 mins and whose screen is so shitty that i can see pixels through a text word and the letters are all blurry and worn out26
I have just been made aware that not everyone in this community knows the legendary tri-state boolean.
It is impermissible for anyone in this community to not know of the legendary tri-state boolean.
We should find a way to replace passwords: any password manager which I tried is inaccurate in identifying login forms and is too hard to use for non technical people older than 40 and convince people to not use some stupid name + birth year combination as their passwords is a frustrating uphill battle.13
In coding, projects and life in general, how can i know when should i say
"hey this isnt working, i should probably go and do something else"
and when should i say
"damn its getting difficult but i must not quit, i have to remain focused and consistent even when I don't want to"
How to relax when you need to do so much context switching, many meetings and then your own work?
My breaks are not enough for recharging me.4
Intern spent about a week trying to set up a local ruby on rails environment. Yeah, this is not really on topic, it wasn't that bad, but it's what comes to mind.
I don't know who modelled the databases I've had to work with these past months but god damn it no fucking normalization anywhere. Inconsistent data just cost me my morning.1
Learning rust or go. Not sure which one yet, but I'm really interested in giving both a shot at some point. I just need to decide which one first, and build something nice with it.
Will probably go for another AWS certificate too, probable Architect associate.4
My two main grudges against Typescript:
1) Union types can't be passed as arguments if there is a variant for every element of the union
2) No tuple polymorphism, i.e. [T, U] isn't assignable to [T]. This is not a mistake because the length of the arrays differs and therefore they may be interpreted in a different way, but IMO there should be a tuple type which is actually an array but length is unavailable and it supports polymorphism. This sounds stupid, but since function parameter lists work well with tuples it would actually enable a lot of functional tricks that are currently inaccessible.7
This is so frustrating. I have the logic nailed down, it's only that Cygwin can't handle another fork -- so I must resort to the Win32 way...
... but the Win32 way be like:
[in, optional] LPCSTR lpApplicationName,
[in, out, optional] LPSTR lpCommandLine,
[in, optional] LPSECURITY_ATTRIBUTES lpProcessAttributes,
[in, optional] LPSECURITY_ATTRIBUTES lpThreadAttributes,
[in] BOOL bInheritHandles,
[in] DWORD dwCreationFlags,
[in, optional] LPVOID lpEnvironment,
[in, optional] LPCSTR lpCurrentDirectory,
[in] LPSTARTUPINFOA lpStartupInfo,
[out] LPPROCESS_INFORMATION lpProcessInformation
Ugh. It's not even difficult, it's just stupid.
BUT: a waltz-around IS a waltz-around...1
I always urge people to bring their own story into their social media content. I try to do that as best I can.
Sometimes I’m happy.
Sometimes I’m bemused.
And sometimes I’m just amazed by the stupid stuff I see around the web.
Alas, today is one of those days. I’m not cranky often, but when I am, it helps to just write it all out. Simmer down now y’all. It’s ranting time.1
So... I've been looking for a week on why my machine was braking tools on every piece...
Found out yesterday, it was machining without water....
Told the engenheir (my direct boss)... Started working at midnight and was the same...
Decided to fix it, besides the fact that I'm a temp and shouldn't be doing his job...
Can't fix it... To many broken pieces....
Well a few metal pipes like straws and some rubber bands and its fixed for now...
I really can't understand why a engenheir gets 10x more money and can't bother to fix the machines....
Well I know why... He's not the one paying for new ones when these brake.
Next: other machine Is working without oil...
And no, I'm not messing with that... In a few months they will just have to buy a new one.4
Today suddenly our HR had mailed to all the employees that after 6 days all employees' post resignation notice period will be changed
- from 1 month (old) to 3 months (new) for under probation employees &
- from 2 months (old) to 3 months (new) for permanent employees.
Even logically this seems to be too stretched up for IT service company based in the India.
My question is how much legal is this?
I googled but answers were for Indian labor laws which are not applicable to the IT company according to my knowledge.5
how is the work different across various domains like fintech , edtech , e-commerce, adtech ,etc? i have heard that fintech has the most workload but pays the most. is it true or Myth?
from my experience, edtech is decent pay and shitty work with decent workload. they are not changing anything except showing videos , so the most innovative work going on there is revamping designs and adding 3rd party integrations7
I make a portfolio website using reactjs can anybody take a look and review my website design.
caution: It is not responsive now and still I have to add animations in it using GSAP

Any non-tech hobby usually helps my coding, because relaxing breaks are far more efficient if I'm not just laying in a bean bag trying not to think about work but rather engaged in something unrelated. During the summer I was storing a really good electric guitar because the owner emigrated, so when I felt stuck I played some music. I used to play the cello in middle school but I was never really good at it nor did I care to practice properly because it felt a lot like yet another class to attend. Apparently music practice works whether you do it in one long or several short rounds as long as the total time is enough.1
Is your code vegan?
After I saw an ad for a vegan higiene product I keep wondering "do the word 'vegan' actually means what I think it does?"
I mean, how do an object made of silicon and plastic could be "not vegan"?!?23
I feel like I am not CS major.
I doble major'ed on 3rd year, so don't have deep knowledge like other 'real' CS majors.2
- Guiding few junior engineers.
- Figured out the root cause for an issue which would hampered the productivity of some folks.
- Not being able to work on a proper dev ticket
- Not even being able to identify a proper fix for the issue mentioned above. (It is still in the works, but only after 2021)
"This question is off-topic. It is not currently accepting answers." (not my question, but by a newbie who, for some reason I will never find out, tried to use an outdated Ubuntu version)
Seen that bullshit so many times.
If you don't have a minute to ask a question to a new contributor, but you do have the time to downvote or close questions, do you really think you are doing the community a favour?
I see that AskUbuntu is not a little bit better than StackOverflow. I will just shut up and leave the assholes alone then they can tell the newbies that they're not welcome on any StackExchange and that's it.2
How do you guys hire people? I need to hire people for a big laravel project and I am not sure how to evaluate someone in just 30 min.
So please tell me about your hiring method.7
It was foolish of me to connect with my colleague in social media and now I can not rant there. But sad part is LinkedIn because they will know if I viewed.2
what's with the losing lena controversy? https://twitter.com/richgel999/...
is some naked old lady's image still being used for testing purposes? first of all , why? and secondly why not just remove it? if the lady herself is against this, then shouldn't everyone be legally obligated to do so, especially the oss ?5
I wonder if it's possible to negotiate amendments that forbid your employer to make you work with specific technologies.
"You're a modern dev shop aren't you? What's the harm in adding a clause to the contract that explicitly states I, the employee, will not be made to work with php5?"1
get "greetingText" by id
change Text to "Hi." if not null;
as opposed to:
var element = document.getElementById("greetingText");
element.innerHTML = "Hi.";
element.innerText = "Hi.";4
First day of work at the new job.
BUT, don’t wanna work. Just want to snuggle in a cozy blanket and watch GOT on Netflix
(I know GOT is not on Netflix, but don’t you wish it was?)2
Went to my friends house and he had a new Amstrad CPC464, with ’Oh Mummy’, a Pac-Man close with better music.
Fell in love with computers from the moment I saw it and bought a Spectrum 128k+2 not long after.
I've got a question for people who understand GO:
Why do I get this error in one of my projects but not in the other?
> gopls requires a module at the root of your workspace
Both projects lack module at the root of my workspace, but only one of them refuses to cooperate...
So, I have a friend and he asked me to do a discord bot for him. (The language was kinda up to me and I chose Python). Nothing complicated (theoretically). I coded it, tested it and sent it to him. But after installing it, he got a different issue EVERY single day. And he didn't change anything! The most infuriating part is, that I couldn't even reproduce the issues he had. WHY? Why can't it just work? Why can't a simple project not just be simple?5
Monday morning means starting the grind again.
I don't want morning to come
If I don't sleep morning won't come.
Of course that's not how anything works but it's what keeps me awake very late every sunday. It's nearly 3 am. I won't even get 7 hours of sleep.
The grind continues.4
So, I've been with my current employer four years now, three and a half of which have been spent working as a time material developer for a huge fashion company. I've been trying to get out of It for the past six months only for my exit to be postponed everytime. There's also no clear idea as to what I would be moved to, going forward. Nobody Is telling me a thing and I think other developers will be moved to different projects before I do.
That's why I took matters into my own hands and started getting back into the recruitement process. I'm about to receive an offer. A fairly better one.
The thing is, I wanna use such offer to see if my current employer can reedem himself and propose to me a good counter offer. I'm not in the mood of starting over, but I want security and management to have a fucking idea of what my future Is gonna be like at this fucking company.
What do you guys think? Am I playing with Fire?1
Howdy. Not making any new posts for a while. Mostly because of tinnitus and because I started to lose interest in programming.1
This got me wondering...
Was shown a product today, doesn't matter what it was, because that part is irrelevant for question. Just out of unsubstantiated curiosity, I'm curious to hear other opinions .
How do you judge a product during first impressions period? Doesn't matter if it's a piece of software, gadget, food product, or all of the aforementioned at the same time.
As I just said - I was shown a product today, well, okay ... not in-person, and not actually shown, rather, made aware of a product. And after looking at it, I realized, that I can no longer look at a product and not focus on "red flags" or look for "where's the catch?". This product, that I'll just keep referring to as "the product" for the sake of keeping it neutral, was unfamiliar to me - I know nothing of it's manufacturer, so any trust to the brand is non-existant, the product brief on the website only made me question every marketing bulletpoint claim they had listed, aņd it didn't make me interested enough to go look up feedback from other users. This drew my attention to the realization that I do this with everything - I only look for whatever i'm looking for... I no longer pay any attention to discovery or suggestions. If I'm looking for HW, I'll focus on what it can and cannot do for the price and the actual first impression will form from using it, if it's SW - same deal, but actual first impression will form based on cross-platform compatibility, state/quality of documentation. Oppose to me, back in the day, where I'd just pick it up irregardless and "flubbed it" along somehow until it worked out.3
Any desktop or web devs here who could lend a hand? I'm struggling with these errors from an old project where the error claims i am not referencing an assembly but clearly i am...
Existing StackOverflow questions have not been of help.6
guys, today i was playing monopoly with my father (not gone with the milk i swear) and he was beating me, so i flipped the board. he got pissed and angry, am i the asshole?
p.s, if u say im the asshole im gonna be super mean to u so say im not but no hard feelings.6
Reading books. When you are used to focus on long texts, those sw related books are not scary anymore. I can finish reference material easily if it keeps my attention.
Who inside BitTitan is doing live testing on production? Would you kindly revert the changes and do testing on a test environment? I've seen the 4 changes so far and they clearly not working.
Please we need to finish this migration2
I know this is not a de devrant, but I had a girlfriend for about a year. And today I found out she cheated on me twice the last few weeks.
How should a programmer deal with this?5
I have decided that massive natural selection events are a thing with humans. When resources appear to be getting low a group of people will prepare and wipe out a large portion of consumers. The most straight forward way is to create a crisis and then offer the "only" solution. Make that solution a weapon and you are done. The masses gladly accept the solution. At all times appear benevolent. Silence dissenting voices swiftly. Make the dissenters look like nutters and publicly humiliate them and apply labels to them. Labels are effective because it creates pariahs. People like to not be singled out and called names.
What do you end up with? People who distrust government and the institutions. I don't know how this benefits the orchestrators (how to spell) of the genocide. Perhaps if the numbers are small enough they can just be rounded up and killed by force rather than coercion.
I get the feeling this approach has been used in the past. Like it has been at least tested on smaller scales. Maybe even on past civilizations. Did we learn to do this from space visitors? I wonder.
2021 has certainly been an interesting year. I used to think people were just stupid. This year has confirmed that for me. But I am not sure stupid is the right word. They are certainly book smart. Maybe naive is a better word. I pray and hope 2022 turns out better for people. Maybe they start seeing signs they have been lied to by people they trust. Maybe not. When you are in the matrix it is hard to see through the facade. The matrix feels very real, until it doesn't.
Dev Goal?: To not be murdered by the matrix.9
i really fucking hate books, books are so annoying. if you comment on this rant with "lol" or some shit, how is this funny? i have an extreme hatred for books and this is not a joke, i am anti-book.30
Another first world mimimi but still an obstacle when just wanting to get work done quickly. I don't know what's more annoying: the multi-line pasted styles that used to be useful one-liners, or the fact that the top search result for this issue was closed/locked without even linking to the appropriate Chromium bugreport?! People report that's fixed, but the fix did not land in Vivaldi yet. Maybe I should consider using Firefox as my default browser again.1
I am hearing reports from less computer savvy people that some Apple devices will refuse to charge the battery if updates are not applied. Supposedly as a way to strong arm users to update. I cannot find anything on this when searching.
Has anyone heard of this?9
There is only one life what you want do now only because we don't know after mixing in the mud again we will come to this earth or not. So Trust in your self work for your dreams and catch them.
so i think i have grown into a lazy ass and joined a company that's currently okay with a lazy ass , and i feel am looking at a big future doom.
its been 3 weeks in the company, i have got to know the product a little, but didn't contributed at all in it, i got a task of testing the sdk which i have been doing for quite some time, and have gained a personal growth of 0%
i have become such a lazy/anxious ass that i can't seem to get out of my office environment to read something that will improve me. i feel bad when i don't know how website, backend , cloud or certain android stuff works but since thw pressure to know them is coming from nowhere , i don't even try reading about them.
sometimes i feel worried that if someone asked me why i was reading something else in office hours the i won't be able to reply ( even though we don't have any official office hours and mthe company says they "only care about the task being completed") but most of the times its just... the lack of motivation to not pick that up. ironically i am watching movies or sleeping during my self defined office hours but not doing anything productive
maybe i have become more inclined towards money. so much so that i might not pick anything up if i am not being paid for it
any tips to come out of this hell hole? i feel like maybe doing some freelance projects would help but am scared shit to think of what will happen of my current employer finds out
Things like Mailtrack are against privacy, aren’t they? Especially because it’s not in the control of receivers at all. Or am I missing something?!4
Can a React.JS expert help me to understand something?
In short, I would like to know what are the main differences between react version 15.6 and 17, in terms of browser issues, and component compatibility?
We have a legacy code base that is in version 15.6 and the team wants to upgrade it and I am attempting to argue with my dumb CTO to upgrade to version 17. However, I’m not versed in react, I'm just a PO and the CTO doesn't know anything but for some odd reason is adamant about staying on an older version. The developers gave me their opinion but I'm interested in an outside opinion.5
The more you achieve, the more you are pushing yourself beyond (and away) from everyone else. From your environment. It's just statistics. Thus, the peak transhumanist becomes completely alone.
But, our achievements that literally fight nature are responsible for prolonging our life expectancy, eradicating disease, all other heights we ascended upon.
Transhumanism and environmentalism are opposing philosophical concepts. But with the very first paracetamol pill you voluntarily took because you chose not to feel the pain, you accepted transhumanism.
Transhumanism and environmentalism are opposing philosophical concepts. If so, environmentalism is death.
Transhumanism is life.
@dfox For some reason, I can favorite my own rants if I send a request to do it manually, I guess that's not... good?7
Started 2022 with working 2 full time contracts. Might look for 3rd since I'm still not even close to having put in more than 6 hours a day. The goal is to save up for my own apartment in a year. Wish me luck.
You know you completely fucked up as a company, when your self-developed CMS is one huge unmaintainable hack and without any structure at fucking all.
It's just mindboggling how even such a complete mess can "attract" customers.
EXTREME STONKS 📈📈📈📈
(thankfully I am not related to that particular company which shall remain unnamed)2
WTF I just found out I have to add slides to the slide deck for Friday’s department meeting. Event has been on the books for a month and they send a “reminder” email that’s actually a first notice for me. Well not my problem because I have PTO scheduled already. My manager is going to present on my behalf.
Fuck Android development tools! What the fucking hell man?! I can't setup and run a simple hello world app!! And that's not the first time. I have tried this on multiple occasions throughout the years and always failed. Non-matching? multiple versions of build-tools, platforms, platform-tools, cmdline-tools, system-images, ... and binaries moving from folder to another between updates and Java, oh don't get me started on Java. I'm too old for this stuff.5
Vivaldi browser is shit.
Simple isntructions on how to make most shitty browser ever:
1. Force users to use "really-fucking-long" password that will not match to any of their existing ones.
2. Invent some useless stupid "encryption password" (why does any normal browser work fine without that shit) and most ridiculous - automatically set it to be the same as the main password.
3. Of course you forget the pass you set because you dont remember what symbol you added 5 times in the end of your normal pass to fit their stupid rules.
4. You have to reset it
5. "Encryption password" does not reset with it, so you still dont remember it
6. Sync is not working!
7. If you think this is shitty enought, you are not right - they went futher. To reset that fucking "encryption password" you have to... ERASE ALL YOUR CLOUD DATA.
Fucking retarded piece of shit - never, never trust those morons who made this shit browser to sync any of your sensitive information.18
I don’t know if it makes sense to post bugs here but here we go anyway.
See how the "weekly topic" text overlaps with other text at the top.
It seems like the height of this area is fixend and is not adapting to the text when it wraps into the second line.2
Every single time that I realised how much of my expertise sounds like vaporware to people, mostly management and C-level.
Have been working on security for quite some time now but seeing that I can't really get through make me feel useless and not worth my weight in shit.
I really hate when stakeholders treat me like an idiot. No, I didn’t change the existing logic of the website. It wasn’t discussed in the scope, so why would I touch it? Stakeholder, you “double checking” like this is demeaning and will only cause me to refuse future requests from you. Plus, you were at the meeting when we discussed scope, so there should be no questioning my intelligence like this.
the red haired girl and the blue haired girl.
there was this story about a programmer who spent years studying computer science before finally getting a job.
the dev studied only computer science and was put on blue team after a few days.
a few hours into one of the constant coding sessions, the boss told the devs that red team members and blue team members would be working in pairs.
the person from red team transferred the devs work to their data base without the dev knowing, then locked down the devs computer. the dev could not do anything. later, the dev got fired for not doing any work. after that, the company got millions of dollars, and the dev did not see any of it.
both the dev and the managers made a note not to hire any programmer who cannot secure their work.
it is not ethical to teach people programming without also teaching them cyber security.
computer networking, programming and security should all be the same major.
it is a bad idea to teach people how to build anything without telling them how to secure it.
the story above was just a scenario, but it probably happens way more often than people think.
Schools should teach both things in the same major.5
If you want to be strictly vegetarian, e.g. only eating plant-based food, and you have a nervous system (e.g. you're not a vegetable), then that's not possible. You need B12.
B12 is complex, and it can't be found in plants — lifeforms that obey laws of evolution don't just spend energy to create a complex substance they don't need. Plants don't have a nervous system, hence no need for B12.
In animal kingdom, there are no animals that are only eating plants. Not a single one of them. Herbivores eat their feces regularly, as B12 is there, but it's synthesized in our bodies at the point when there is no chance that it can be consumed.
Deer eat lemmings on a regular basis. Among herbivores, this is not uncommon.
If you want to be strictly vegetarian, and you don't want to eat B12 from supplements (because it's derived not from plants as you probably guessed), you can make it happen with certain kinds of fermented food, where B12 is synthesized by specific bacteria.23
ugh... laptops are like , crazy addictions.
1 year ago, my hp laptop was the best for me, building android studio apps , keeping daily backups of all my home's appliances comfortably in it, running games and various softwares . i would carry it anywhere without fearing of any damage thanks to heavy cases and keyboard covers.
till i started my first job who gave me an intel mac to work with.I got a revised definition of a laptop. laptops are not what i knew .
- a laptop is something which does not take 20+ minutes to build android apps and can build in 60 seconds too
- a laptop is something which does not need to have a shitty plastic body and can have a high quality metal body.
- a laptop is something which does not need to have a shitty screen and can have a really clear (but fragile /s) HQ screen.
- a laptop is something which does not necessarily gives you ports. /s
- a laptop is something which does not necessarily needs large storage to store your stuff. /s
- INR 60K (or half of my 1st year college fees) isn't apparently not enough for a laptop
- a laptop can cost TONS to get fixed /s
now , i did have learned all this and even after all the flaws , i feel like inclined towards buying a macbook. however coming from a typical lower class family from india , who DID break a laptop screen in 1 year, i am having some serious concerns buying a laptop , a 16 inch piece of aluminium for 300K (almost the cost of my four years of graduation)
but compared to that , i also have concerns buying any laptop above 100k because that's a lot of money , even though I could afford it. the whole point is, my non tech grocery seller parents worked too hard for very less money . i am in tech profile, i believe my work is not that much physically intensive, and i work half as hard as those guys , nd earn good yet spending SO MUCH feels like being an idiot
oh the headache :/11
Windows updated and that ugly news and interests thing on the task bar got turned back on again. Its happening too often to be mad about it. Its just annoying to check which settings microsoft decided to change because fuck what you want. We have to build a user base weather you want it or not. I dread updating to windows 11..5
Not too sure why I am required to be in the office when we all know the next code I will be writing is next year.2
Backend developer does not even sort his API results by ID or name. Damn. I hate dependencies like this. Simple things but they are too lazy to do.1
Feeling a little frustrated lately, just been a few months in this company and its all great, even my boss congratulated me the last week for deliver some well made features but i think i should be learning more and coding faster, im always giving the best i can but its never enough. (Sorry if i mispell something, english is not my native language)1
i would really look forward for a future with detachable heads. not that head-in-a-jar Futurama bs. just simple old unscrew the head from one body to another , like a usb kind of thing . this way i could use my chiseled friend's body to score :/
oh, and everything from upload web series. that shit is awesome
One of our previous clients is not paying the rest of the payments after receiving the codes. What are the things we can/should do digitally to make them pay the payment?
btw, it was a web app. we worked on the front end and the backend of the app. So, naturally we know all the API endpoints, we have the database access, and so on. So yeah, we can do so many things.
But still I wanna ask you guys, what would you do to make someone pay?3
To all my asian friends with YouTube channels, please take some time to learn proper english word pronunciation, I totally hate going to a video with info I definitely need but I have to skip it because I don't understand shit.
Am not asian , i may not understand the struggles of pronunciation in english coming from your native language.15
"Nuxt 3 is currently in beta, keep in mind that it is not yet production-ready."
How about I use it in production anyway, huh? You can't stop me anyway and the client pays too little to care about resiliency of the app compared to my fun of learning, thenks.
I have a python script that continuously collects data for me. I want to be able to display that data on a node js server. How should I go about this? I was thinking of maybe having the python script send get requests to the server but I feel that is not the right answer. Let me know if u guys need more info, thanks!5
Is there anyone in the whole of devRant working with VR, AR, speech or motion detection?
I keep thinking that those were just fads that disappeared, because I'm still to see a single lasting-success product.
It might be temporary, someone might invent motion control that actually works or an Alexa that does not suck (unless you speak English with an toothpaste-commercial accent), or a non-goofy AR set.
But if not a single dev in devRant is working with it, it does not seem likely.7
Anyone ? ;p so far I like little code every day not related to work and some of "tasks" are pretty interesting (Ok, I mostly brute force everything, but it can be done so much better!)5
Fucking mql5 - code gives no errors, it should create a file but it does not. Why is that?
I have searched all my computer, there is no such file.8
Finding myself with more and more time where I'm not engaged in conversation or listening to an actual person. What are the best dev-related podcasts to listen to whilst I work/code?1
I have been using Linux for a while and I get update notification about 3 times per week. I find it annoying. As soon as I plan to get some work done, I get a large notification popup saying "Hey, it's time to install le updates". I find it distracting; especially so because I use my laptop about 3 times per week; so basically EVERY TIME when I'm about to use it, it says "HEY you know what? Time for UPDATES".
Updates on Windows are annoying too; but at least they do not appear as often. I find this unacceptable and I do not know how anyone could think that distracting people from work so often is "ok". This is bad.11
Eyup DevRant Devs - First off Merry Christmas, Happy Holidays and a Happy New Year to everyone working hard on this platform - In the New Year, please, please, PLEASE can you fix the iOS App not repositioning when in Landscape Mode for iPads? Currently typing this sideways on my iPad Pro 2020 on the latest iPadOS version, and latest version of the DevRant App; cheers chaps!
I am so gosh darn annoyed by the fact that everyone is not required by the united nations to own a Garfield fursuit!! it is really weird and annoying how they didn't pass a law to make sure everyone owns one. i am so gosh darn annoyed!!2
