Haven’t posted here in a while, life has changed lots since last time. I applied to a new job in September/ October last year, called in for 1st round of interviews in December, got job offer in Valentine’s Day this year. I got a 42% Pay rise increase by going from private media company to governmental company.

Plus the annual pay and pension negotiations just got completed (all gov employees), so that’s a 1.55% payrise. And because I’m in an union, I might get another 1.24% payrise later this year.

So now I work at the National Archives of Norway. Which is just awesome.

I worked at a computer store for almost 4 years, don’t really have any seniors since the first year and if I don’t understand something google are my only hope

So during 4th year it got worse, I got college final project also tons of work. That last year really burn me out like crap. No one’s complaining if I can’t troubleshoot something (even the boss or client) but I feel depressed if I failed to help them

I quite 3 months ago and currently on another city with a software company, first 2 months was great, tons of senior and I can finally rely on someone instead of pulling my hair by myself

Last year at work we started migrating our backend from PHP on a dedicated server to Node.js on AWS lamda functions

We went from 10 second calls to 70ms calls...

Italian schools are by far the worst in the world.
I'm in a IT oriented school, where we should learn to code.

We spent the first year writing in Word and "programming" in Excel.

In the second year we started learning Visual Basic, a total waste of time.

In the third year we finally got rid of most of the useless subjects we had and started learning C++.
Sadly we had a teacher who wasn't able to properly speak and teach to students who never really programmed.
We didn't even know what a class was at the end of the year.

In the fourth year, the current one, we didn't have a teacher for the first 3 months.
Now we are learning Java, but just the basics.
Oh, we're also "learning" HTML (not 5) and JavaScript.

Next year, the last one, we will do PHP and SQL.
Maybe also C#, the most pointless programming language in the world.

A good friend of mine turned 38 yesterday. It will be his last birthday. Last month was his last Christmas and New Years. He entered hospice care this month. His doctors have said he's only got a few weeks left, so he's come off the treatment for his brain tumour. His kids are old enough to understand he won't be here much longer. A bunch of us, friends from high school, flew up to see him in the fall. It's hard to believe someone our age won't be with us to see another year. It puts things in perspective.

I'm getting really good at SQL, last year it appeared me to be very difficult but finally, it's easier than I thought

So I had a really big personal project the last 2 years, which certainly thaught me a lot. But on Tuesday this week it got shut down. How you ask? Let me first explain what kind of project it was.

It was a mobile application for my school to look up substitutions and events, read news and some other stuff. I talked about it with the principal a lot, but back 1 year they said there were too few features. So the last year I spent improving and adding features.

Then the last few weeks, it was time to make everything ready and talking with the leadership of the school about everything necessary. Then one big problem arose. No teacher in school could maintain the app, the ones who maintained IT-Stuff at school left this year.

So it was decided to "kill" the app and wait for an IT interested teacher to come.

And now every day of the week, I sat infront of my PC and didn't know what to do...

This last year has been really good. First job where I am only a dev. Learned a shat ton about modern C++. So 2019 would be my fav year.

However, I think my favorite moment as a dev was when I realized I could go anywhere I wanted as a dev. That small amount of inspiration when you realize, given enough time, you could recreate the universe in code.

At that moment time became the enemy of ambition.

That feeling when the client calls you to add a feature you added and gave them a course in last year and you're unsure as to send a new invoice because they forgot...

I read somewhere at the start of the global pandemic: when it comes to work from home life, you should never underestimate the benefits of a power nap.

I do some robotics stuff on the side. We built our robot around a Raspberry Pi last year. We had 2 Python scripts talking over TCP, one for the bot, one for the controller. Overflowed the buffer on the bot and it went berserk once the script crashed.

Checked the code, and saw this. Quick fix, turned dates to UNIX timestamp, and it worked.

Worst Hackathon Experience ever!
Had been to SAP for a hackathon last year. Built a complete solution for our challenge. Due to no sleep and 48 hours of non stop coding, my team mate who was supposed to present our solution screwed it up in the last minute. Now we blame ourselves for losing because of our bad presentation.

Statistics. Tbh, it is way more. Didn't use the codeium plugin for a long time. Regarding key presses i'm in the 0.10%. Longest streak is not impressive. 21 on codeium and 40 on github or so.

I've been working for a contractor company for the last half year, when I first started I was on a development team, happy and making progress, since I'm still a student I get perfomance reviews each month and I aced them all during my time at the development team.

Last month I was transfer to a supposed development team which turned out to be a support team, I use to write more code in two days with the other team than in all my time here. On my last performance I got an awful grade and I feel like I'm stuck here.

I've been working for a company since last year. I was very enthusiastic and happy because that company always boasted about being the leader of cloud solutions in my country and I was really interested in everything related to the cloud computing world . However, after one year, my current task is updating stupid fucking private products that no one knows on fucking old windows server.....

Modern hardware is rubbish. I recently donated a load of computers from the 1970s and 1980s to a technology museum, they all worked well and could still be used and set up in the museum's displays. My more recent stuff, from the last few years, I decided to sell on eBay. Some of it just had to be thrown out, mostly due to non-replaceable batteries that would no longer charge. What nonsense is this? Why is it easier to use a 35-year-old computer than a 3-year-old Chromebook or 5-year-old iPad?

Well today ended in a bang! Had a typo in a dd command and nuked my entire work VM. Last VM backup august 2020. Time to retrace the entire work environment for a year. Not much work was lost thou as most of it was already pushed.

So on Thursday I left my first job as a Trainee Electronics Technician which i got given when i finished my last year of College, to become a .NET Web Developer this Monday. Trying to put the sadness aside from missing co-workers and be excited instead!
