The author quit last year.7 -
Last year, my company sent me to India to coordinate stuff.
Me, to my wife: "They've chosen me because they trust my social skills."
Her: "OMG, what is the rest of the company like?!"
LOL.. :-)3 -
I was just thinking... The JetBrains devs must enter the office and be like:
"Today I'm gonna program a programming program for others to program, and I'll do it on the programming program I programmed last year."4 -
My First name, is also my Last name.
So it gets kinda akward whenever i fill out a form and when the lady at the booth notices i have the same names on both the First and Last name fields.
She points and explains to me which is which and everybody looks at me like im some 6 year old hahaha.12 -

I have been teaching my fiance PHP over the last year, and she has been sent her first technical test for a Junior Developer role. She is flying through it, seeing people enjoy coding is a great experience!5 -
I remember last year in school one of my teachers had us make a little web page with HTML and CSS. She was confused when I was using an external CSS stylesheet. She thought all the CSS had to be in a style tag inside of the index.html file...6
-
Applied for my first dev position last year. Interviewer asked for a code sample so I showed him some forum software I was working on at the time. I think my commit messages tanked the interview...5

I wanted to work on my sideprojects on the last days of the year but then my wife spawned a childprocess and somehow it eats up all my ressources..4
-
Final year of my Comp Sci degree and mum still says I shouldn't study on the computer so much.
Last time I checked a sheet of paper doesn't compile C very well4 -
Tomorrow I will be rolling out a completely brand new system company wide. Spent the last year working on it.
First time ever leading a project of this size and importance.
Wish me luck. 😫13 -
When my teacher from a basic web application course last year didn't know that HTML5 had been released.1
-
In my yesterday's interview:
Interviewer: Tell me about some cool things you did on last year.?
Me: Connecting multiple IoT devices and create dashboard to show status using web sockets.
Interviewer: Oh great. You did without page refresh.?
Me: Yeahh 🙄
Interviewer: Then its cool.
Me: 😬🤔😐22 -
Today is finally the day of my hackathon, have been working with my team for about a month on a personal assistant already. I think we may stand a chance to get in the finals this year, unlike last year, when we started working only on the day of the hackathon.2

Had a video game thought a few years ago. Wrote it down. Created a board game of it last year. Tweaked it. This year I am diving into Unreal Engine 4, Maya and C++ to make it come to life...8

Haven’t posted here in a while, life has changed lots since last time. I applied to a new job in September/ October last year, called in for 1st round of interviews in December, got job offer in Valentine’s Day this year. I got a 42% Pay rise increase by going from private media company to governmental company.
Plus the annual pay and pension negotiations just got completed (all gov employees), so that’s a 1.55% payrise. And because I’m in an union, I might get another 1.24% payrise later this year.
So now I work at the National Archives of Norway. Which is just awesome.
Attaching a picture of my new desk, just missing the new 27” monitor I added on the left side.4 -
* Intern comes back to the same company after a year *
[Senior developer] : What did you learn last year at school?
[Intern] : I can develop any Android app now
* Opens his phone and clicks on an app *
* Only one page with text : "Hello World" *
[Senior developer] * drops on the floor in an attempt to hide his laughter *2 -
We had a server that crashed every single Christmas four years a row. Last year I put a cross and garlic on it for fun. Everybody laughed at me... but it didn't crash!
Soo... should I protect it from the Christmas ghost again, this year too? 🤔👻1 -
I just finish "rebuilding" a page that I have built last year. My Js file (jQuery) went from 1200+ lines to 600..
I rewrite everything, the functionality is the same but the code is mush more cleaner.
Soo bad and redundant code.
Although comments where very helpful.
Feels good. -
Big boss: Last year we had much more revenue and profits than our expectations, and this success is thanks to all of you. Thank you! You made an excellent work! Impressive!
Some employee: Can we all get a raise?
Big boss: Wtf that question again? No way!9 -
I worked at a computer store for almost 4 years, don’t really have any seniors since the first year and if I don’t understand something google are my only hope
So during 4th year it got worse, I got college final project also tons of work. That last year really burn me out like crap. No one’s complaining if I can’t troubleshoot something (even the boss or client) but I feel depressed if I failed to help them
I quite 3 months ago and currently on another city with a software company, first 2 months was great, tons of senior and I can finally rely on someone instead of pulling my hair by myself
P.S. The store working atmosphere was nice, but I just don’t wanna be last man when shit happens. Especially if it’s my 1st job -
Last year at work we started migrating our backend from PHP on a dedicated server to Node.js on AWS lamda functions
We went from 10 second calls to 70ms calls...
At this point our frontend is not even ready for this kind of speed 😅9 -
A College Friend of mine has offered last year a free C++ course for everyone who is interested, this year he is doing the same in Rust. This guy can explain and gives a big part of his freetime for this.
He is just amazing.
Thanks to everyone who shares his/her knowledge!4 -
Got hired as a fullstack dev last august (first dev job). This was a 1 year contract. Was offered permanent employment today and I can't stop grinning :D3

I'm so so happy to have joined devRant: it gave me lots of motivation to work on my personal projects. In the last two days I worked more on an old dream/project than I did in the last year. TWO. DAYS.
Don't know for how long this motivation will last, but - for now - thank you so much, people :')3 -
HAPPY NEW FUCKING YEAR BECAUSE IT WILL SUCK WAY MORE THAN THE LAST ONE AND CAN WE PLEASE JUST FUCKING STOP CELEBRATING AND GET BACK TO WRITING FUCKING RANTS AGAIN?! BECAUSE I WILL FUCKING DO!4
-
Was making a text based console game last year. Had to know natural human responses. Got too tired of it and make it print "Uhh, I've never had a lot of education, please use easy words."
-
Debugger...Chicken I guess? Got it from one of my students last year. Adapter for scale. It's not the size that matters...2
-
I rage quit my last job, I didn't want to do 'my last comand'. So I requested my 15 days of vacation from the previous year I had at thursday. And when my boss aproved it I delivered my auto fired letter at friday. Since then when someone just leaves in one day they call it 'to do a Dani' in honor to me XD
-
Someone here into 3d printing? Got into the hobby end of last year and built my own new printer this year. I love this hobby! So great to print custom housings for your build electronics.13

Am so fricking happy right now. Last year I posted a screenshot of one my apps hitting over 10k downloads. Well today i woke up and another one of my apps has over 12k monthly active users too. Feeling like a champion!12

Black Friday fail.
Local online store totally failed last year on BF, so they spent the whole week on news, radio, print ads, newsletter raving about how they upgraded the systems for BF and are expecting double the traffic of last year and are super ready. 60 seconds into BF, site went totally tits up, was not till 01:45 that anyone could access it again, and according to uptimerobot, they were tits up for about 55% of the day.1 -
Me last year: Fuck yes! PWA's sound amazing! Can't wait to see what they can evolve into!
Me now: Fuck PWA, fuck those 'apps' with the thick end of a rake5 -
Today is my birthday and all I checked in was a blank space with the commit message: "fuck yeah, last year in my twenties"!7

Italian schools are by far the worst in the world.
I'm in a IT oriented school, where we should learn to code.
We spent the first year writing in Word and "programming" in Excel.
In the second year we started learning Visual Basic, a total waste of time.
In the third year we finally got rid of most of the useless subjects we had and started learning C++.
Sadly we had a teacher who wasn't able to properly speak and teach to students who never really programmed.
We didn't even know what a class was at the end of the year.
In the fourth year, the current one, we didn't have a teacher for the first 3 months.
Now we are learning Java, but just the basics.
Oh, we're also "learning" HTML (not 5) and JavaScript.
Next year, the last one, we will do PHP and SQL.
Maybe also C#, the most pointless programming language in the world.
What a beautiful country.22 -
5 years as a software engr. In the last year I have programmed in java, js, ruby, and python professionally.
Just want to thank the guys contributing to linting tools. ESLint, Prettier, and other syntax helpers/correction tools.
You guys are awesome.2 -

Our parent company nixed our entire QA team last year and now they wondering why our product releases are so unstable lately.
Who needs QA anyways. Their solution is to just stop writing code with bugs in it.5 -
BOSS allowed a last minute change that apparently was barely tested to be merged right before the last release of the year...
BOOM!!!
Me: ... I told you so....1 -
A good friend of mine turned 38 yesterday. It will be his last birthday. Last month was his last Christmas and New Years. He entered hospice care this month. His doctors have said he's only got a few weeks left, so he's come off the treatment for his brain tumour. His kids are old enough to understand he won't be here much longer. A bunch of us, friends from high school, flew up to see him in the fall. It's hard to believe someone our age won't be with us to see another year. It puts things in perspective.5
-
You know you learned a lot in the last year when you try to change something on a website you made 1 year ago and it is almost impossible.
The code is not well structured. PHP mixed with HTML, functions that should be organized as a class etc.
I really, really, need to refactor the entire site!4 -
So you're gonna underpay me when you know damn well I'm the best dev you've had in at least the last year? Guess who's gonna learn DVORAK on a QWERTY11
-
#1 GoogleMap map = null;
#2 map.clear();
I'm used to bad code, since i'm responsible for code review of acadamic projects. But when i saw that one and last year students saying they dont know the reason, i died a bit inside3 -
Brain; "Ok you should get back into programming to take your mind of things at the moment, start work on that big project you wanted to start!"
Me: "Ok let's rebuild that asset I made last year that no body purchased or cared about!"
Brain: *Audible sigh*8 -
Hey y'all! It's been a while since I logged in.
But I'm back with a dev jingle, just like last year:
Jingle bells,
Batman smells,
Look how my code compiles,
Oh what fun, it is to see,
No reds in my console!16 -
Once I ordered a pack of highlighters for Amazon Prime Day and accidentally received a GTX 1080TI graphics card instead. Last year, I received a saw blade instead of some sunscreen. Any of you receive any "accidental treasure" from Amazon?16
-
I know last year suddenly lots of animated login popped out.
NPM actually uses one... and it doesn’t look that good14 -
MS paint is going away...
Wait no it's not...
SHUT UP! No one cares about paint. No one even uses it anyways. And no, because you opened it twice last year to crop a screenshot does not count as using it.15 -

I've been doing wrong these last year, so I decided to step up my game, implementing on my work cycle:
+ Testing
+ CI
It feels fucking great. If you're not doing it, it's time.1 -
> Telegram bot
> Whatsapp bot
> Domino game in terminal (Unfinished from last year)

> Android Notability-like app with more features
> Program that increases youtube video views
> Android animal space invaders
> Own website/portfolio
> Our company app (includes daily euro-peso exchange rates, guidelines and other stuff about the company)
ive had other ideas but i started losing them cause i wrote them in several small pieces of paper. starting to think of i'll start to have a notebook dedicated to "ideas"7 -
Finally being self-employed and independent...
...time to rejoin devRant!
So, hi Guys! What did i miss in the last year?3 -
I'm on a call collecting requirements to a feature request that was developed last year, deployed last month, and nobody has a fucking clue about what's going on.
I'm also getting told that my requirements won't work, when they clearly will.
What's fucking crazy? In the time that I have wasted on this topic, I could have already written the fix.1 -
I just sent two emails for an internship in two companies.
Hope they'll reply back.
I'll keep you updated on that5 -
Every last 10 days of the year we have a break...
I'm just gonna implement CI/CD in this motherfucking environment and blow everyone's mind at January, I'm sick of working as an amateur... -
While interviewing someone for a DevOps position, he admits having only started on this subject a year ago. This is no big deal.
When asked how he keeps up-to-date, he answered "I haven't for the last ten months".
Well, that was not the answer that I expected...4 -
Last year my goals were two:
- work less
- earn more
and I only achieved the second one.
Based on that, my new resolutions are:
- sleep more
- do not work more
- earn more or equal
- to gain stability
- more efficient workouts7 -
Last year I startet teaching C# to my little sister now she has decides to become are real programmer. I'm so proud!2
-
Learned helplessness theory is the view that clinical depression and related mental illnesses may result from such real or perceived absence of control over the outcome of a situation.
^^^ This sums up my last year as a systems engineer perfectly3 -
well, the microsoft surface that has been lying in a shelf and was used three times in the last year now only boots to bluescreen. you still get the full experience even though you barely use it.
-
>work on multi million dollar company
>last year "we were doing fine" until we got told "well, turns out we didn't, no bonus this year"
>people leave
>You'll get a bonus next year for sure
>Company cuts expenses such as training budgets and freezes raises and promotions
>People still leave
>There are whole teams that are now left with 1-3 people, lol
>Turns out we will not get any bonuses this year either, except for "the high achievers", but they have not announced it yet
>high achievers include the evp of engineering who single handedly destroyed the company's DevOps department last year and an EM/engineer who is completely incompetent as both an engineer as well as a manager, so much so that the company has made him his own 1-person-department so that he doesn't have to work with other people
>Upper management keeps telling us everything is going fine and they suck each other's d**k
This is like watching a trainwreck in slow motion lmao.
I'll stay till they announce this year's bonuses to watch the shit show and then I'll leave17 -
Quick reminder: don't deploy to production on you last working day before holidays :)
Wish you all happy new year)
GG!5 -
I was born in 1989 and I started to code last year. Do you think it's too late for me and I can't be a pro?😕9
-
My computer science class in school is learning c# so slowly that last year it took 3 weeks for them to learn what an integer is.
I learned most of the language on a vacation last year and now I don't show up for class.
and actually, my teacher doesn't mind it, she encourages me about learning more and doing projects.
best teacher I've had so far.
recently the class teacher noticed me when I go home instead of going to class and he made me come to every lesson. Really frustrating.10 -
Decided to clean up my pictures folder, found this picture from October last year. It's taken the same day i reinstalled windows.2
-
I'm debugging someone else's 10 year old legacy .asp web application (shoot me now), and I'm trying to find the most recent records in a database table.
Why is the most recent record from September of last year?
Oh.
Because they're storing the datetime value as varchar (40).
Good thing they were smart enough not to waste disk space by using varchar (255)!4 -
At the moment I geek out to picking pad locks and growing anything from seeds.
I have grow an english oak, its about 10-15 cm tall.
A maple from a seed I found in a park in Barcelona last year.
And all sorts of chilis🔥4 -
I have no idea how this code that I wrote last year work and there's obviously no documentation but thankfully I gave my classes very useful names such as "YuDoDis", "Texter467", "TheHolyButton", "GARBAGE", etc. Fucking hate myself sometimes.3
-
I spent the last weeks rewriting a huge project which I had to hurriedly write a year ago. No comments, no documentation, spaghetti code. Part me was an asshole! But now I am done, all is new, everything is well commented, structured in classes with well defined tasks. Yay.2
-
When putting my kids to bed today I said: "See you next year!" The looks I got were priceless.
But wait, there's more. Tomorrow I get to get to say, "I haven't seen you since last year!"4 -
Alcoholic Programmer
Last year, I had an inevitable programming session while I was drunk. I didn't struggle at all. I programmed like composing a poem. Btw I have been programming for last 18 years and never enjoyed this much after college programming labs.
Since then I've been drinking before complicated logics and never disappointed.
Tl;dr. Programming is fun, but programming is unparalleled when drunk.4 -
Last year I wanted to experiment with some 35mm film, so I got a 1978 Canon A-1. I was pissed when people started asking me how many megapixels does it have!2
-
Honestly, fuck Lenovo.
First it's taken well over a year and my phone's not gotten 8.0 yet. And now my phone no longer vibrates. I've had this for less than a year and the piece of shit has broken already.
Last time I'm giving this trash excuse of a company my money.21 -
999 frameworks that do the same thing and every year 1 of them becomes the fad and many things written in last year's fad gets rewritten in new one.2
-
Guy I work with messaging me: Hey could you check my SQL syntax to get the date part for the month and year.
Me thinking: Ughhh this is going to be something stupid I know it. Why doesn't he just check it himself?
I check it... 2 queries that are very, very, very... simple... and similar except one returns last year (2017) and the other returns the current year (2018)
Me: Not sure what your issue is... I'm not getting any syntax errors. They are executing
Him: Well it shouldn't show 2017, it should show 2018
Me thinking: learn to debug you lazy fuck
Me: Well you're adding a -1 to your year...(Not sure why your even adding to it if your just getting the current month and year)
Him: Oh you're correct! That makes sense
Waste of my time2 -
Been thinking about registering the domain "(my last name).email" so I could have "myfirstname@mylastname.email" Checked Namecheap and it's 2.99 a year. Hmmmm...5
-
New year is the only +1 I do not give a fuck about. All it means is I am one year closer to death, so I will smoke one more cigarette after the last, one more cup of coffee with far too much sugar, and I will keep coding one more line after the other, and frankly it is just to distract me from the fact that there is always another +1, one more person to hate, one more word spoken, all so I can get to through one more year. So fuck the new year because there will always be another. But I won't always get a +1 on a rant.5
-
Actually in my last year of University and already received 3 job proposals to different country to receive 5 times my actual sallary...
But... I need to finish my course first!!!1 -
I'm getting really good at SQL, last year it appeared me to be very difficult but finally, it's easier than I thought4
-
So I had a really big personal project the last 2 years, which certainly thaught me a lot. But on Tuesday this week it got shut down. How you ask? Let me first explain what kind of project it was.
It was a mobile application for my school to look up substitutions and events, read news and some other stuff. I talked about it with the principal a lot, but back 1 year they said there were too few features. So the last year I spent improving and adding features.
Then the last few weeks, it was time to make everything ready and talking with the leadership of the school about everything necessary. Then one big problem arose. No teacher in school could maintain the app, the ones who maintained IT-Stuff at school left this year.
So it was decided to "kill" the app and wait for an IT interested teacher to come.
And now every day of the week, I sat infront of my PC and didn't know what to do...6 -
Last year, one of our assignments for school was to implement a caesar cipher in Java. There is that one guy, that doesn't understand the concept of dynamic variables, so he HARDCODED every single possibility for every character. More than 1000 lines for something this simple. Yes, we are studying informatics. Yes, he passed last year1
-
Dude this ous the English I'm taught in my last year of school. I spend my time on the phone and I'm still the best in class xD5
-
I found my devRant stickers that I thought I lost!
They were shoved in a shoe box full of receipts from last summer. I must've put them on my desk with the receipts as I was buying shit for school last year. -
“hi all, we are cancelling the last two releases this year due to instability that we can’t fix by the cut off. If the server returns an error, every react-native built component crashes and stops working until a relaunch”7
-
My first post of 2019.
One month to Valentine's Day, Last year's was spent with beer, the pervious with her. This year I want to spend with her and beer.
I somehow feel I will get neither.3 -
I got job offer from company that makes AI product that works like electric fence for people, tracks their work and report to managers so they know when to meet and talk with this person.
Some Fucking Behavioral Shit. Well I’m tracking this company to see who they got acquired by and at the same time get the fuck out from this smart phone operating system.
Mother fuckers want to know all about everything and everyone.
At this point I saw my face in front of robot being my boss and started to questioning my life. Maybe that’s it.
Maybe it’s just last days, last year, last hour, last minute, last second…5 -
Client hasn't paid since April last year. Now wants to engage another company to maintain my site. Kill switch?14
-
When Facebook launched an all-out battle against Apple last year, little did they know that the war would be two-fronts.15
-
today on the first day of the last year of college we learned about terminator
then we learned about biology
then i realized this is a course about AI1 -
Crossed the 3k mark.. 😁
Thanks to everyone.
Every rant, comment and conversation has been wonderful.
One of the best decisions I took in last 1 year was to join DevRant...9 -
This last year has been really good. First job where I am only a dev. Learned a shat ton about modern C++. So 2019 would be my fav year.
However, I think my favorite moment as a dev was when I realized I could go anywhere I wanted as a dev. That small amount of inspiration when you realize, given enough time, you could recreate the universe in code.
At that moment time became the enemy of ambition.1 -
That feeling when the client calls you to add a feature you added and gave them a course in last year and you're unsure as to send a new invoice because they forgot...
-
I read somewhere at the start of the global pandemic: when it comes to work from home life, you should never underestimate the benefits of a power nap.
My gods, that person was right! I only wish I had taken advantage of it more over the last year.1 -
Last year I planned to start a startup. I've started many good things but not the startup yet.
* A new data format
* A new data type
* A new web framework
* A new concept for logging
* And many other opensource tools and libraries2 -
Fun fact, I left my old job in October last year. I still have a full access to their github. With admin privileges. I could just delete all their repositories. This is too much power.7
-
I'm on my last year on my master in computer science. What can I except when I'm done? Give me your wisdom! :) Please don't answer "hell" etc without a explanation haha :) I'm doing a master in AI and distributed system.7
-
Today is the first day of the last year of my bachelor's degree.
It's also the first day of work for one of my closest friends.
I wish him the best for this new adventure.
Good luck my friend and have a nice day !1 -
My dev goal is to actually finish something this year, last year I started a load of projects but left them unfinished2
-
I think I'm getting fired. My manager is pushing to have a meeting. Although we also have 1:1s but he is asking for it this time. Never did this before.
My company have a firing culture. I'm not very positive about everything. My performance was satisfactory last year, but I couldn't do much this year.22 -
Had a stupid argument with a “last year robotics engineer” student that shits on python just because he doesn’t like the syntax and compares the runtime speed with C++
like what the fuck dude, how is that a valid argument25 -
Just realized the only true holiday I've taken in the past 18 months was 3 days for Thanksgiving last year and 3 days for Thanksgiving this year.
I can't imagine why I'm so stressed and rage so much.
I'm my own 🤡 -
Today I'm beginning my third year of Bachelor in embedded computing. And just as last year, I'm bored as fck. "Learning" the same stuff over and over, and wasting my time when I could be at work as a PHP developer ... FML7
-
This was last year. "Guys, guys, we need to convert everything to ES6." Our mainly users were elderly people with old devices. So we did. Many resigned shortly.6
-
Hiho.
I'am currently at the Ragnarök Festival and like last year there are all lot of rubber ducks to buy in the merchandise tent. But I cannot dicide which I'd buy. So, I want to ask for recommendations. Which duck shall I buy? :)11 -
1. Be better dev/human
2. Do all personal projects TDD
3. Finish that unreal engine course that i bought last year january -
Me at promotion interview (modtly a formality) last year
Q: why do you want to be promoted?
Me: so that when I say something, people (team mates) will take me more seriously
Now: either nothing has changed or I'm getting ignored even more6 -
We get an email from the customer that a feature they “are using every day” is broken and it needs to be fixed ASAP. Sure, seems to be broken in current build. Run git blame to see when it stopped working. Last change may of last year. It’s been broken for almost a year and it took them until now to notice even though they “use it every day”.1
-
Before uni year: "Uuuuh I don't know if I'll ever get used to Ubuntu for this year..."
3 months in: "When did I last boot Windows up again?" -
Personal development... I mean, I'm the same shit I was yesterday, last year, last decade, last century, ...4
-
I was gonna be an Electrical Engineer.
It was the last year of highschool, I was offered a job if I learned how to code.
I did. I loved it. Later I went for Systems Engineering instead.
3 years later I don't regret it, but I'm also starting Electrical Engineering in parallel next year.
Wish me luck, but it's ok if I die I guess.2 -
I kinda hate how I'm forced to learn java swing when the same professor taught javafx last year... (ノಥ益ಥ)ノ ┻━┻4
-
Nightly coding session in Tuscany drinking good Chianti! That's the highest point of my peacefulness in the last year...there is something wrong in our job/passion.7
-
I do some robotics stuff on the side. We built our robot around a Raspberry Pi last year. We had 2 Python scripts talking over TCP, one for the bot, one for the controller. Overflowed the buffer on the bot and it went berserk once the script crashed.

How to NOT handle dates!
Do not put the date to "mdy" format, today would be 050217.
Working on an intranet for some multi-billion corporation, and was wondering why events from last year were showing.
Last year's events were 28th of October, 2016, and was showing as upcoming events :)
Checked the code, and saw this. Quick fix, turned dates to UNIX timestamp, and it worked.undefined maybe put it on the bill for the client my back hurts today will this get many ++ i definitely have to buy one love this not laughing at all dateformat date right now i don't know what to write how long can the tags be how many tags can i put?2 -
I was teaching students most of the time, in the last year teachers where somewhat forced by my internship company to be open for the knowledge students have, so that is when I started teaching teachers as well.
Its the worst experience I ever had. -
I've made a NLP tokenizer which is 30 times faster than clearNlp and standford tokenizer, last year. It is rich and require very less space(don't load any model). Should i make it open source?9

Worst Hackathon Experience ever!
Had been to SAP for a hackathon last year. Built a complete solution for our challenge. Due to no sleep and 48 hours of non stop coding, my team mate who was supposed to present our solution screwed it up in the last minute. Now we blame ourselves for losing because of our bad presentation. -
New on HS Robotics team (we went to worlds last year —> we’re good). I come from France.
The lead programmer say that we are gonna stop coding the robot in Java and start C++ this year, so naturally I’m excited!
Lead programmer just told us we’re actually staying with Java... fuck.4 -
Last year, my company has added the functionality for users to reset their passwords.
The company was then 5y old and already had to reset thousands of passwords. Oh well...1 -

Are you kidding me?
And btw, why does my 1 year old battery only last 4 hours, when the phone is turned off?1 -
Ahhhh, devRant, the last holy place where you can carelessly read without being flushed with fucking foodball news.
Only the tech thingies I like so much, all year long. Devrant, I love you!1 -
Statistics. Tbh, it is way more. Didn't use the codeium plugin for a long time. Regarding key presses i'm in the 0.10%. Longest streak is not impressive. 21 on codeium and 40 on github or so.
At this moment I'm very happy with the plugin, it knows me completely. * tab tab tab *. Almost always knows what I want to do. It advanced a lot last year, I did quit a few times on it last year for few months because it often sucked. Now it's perfect. Especially under VIM it's very cool!2 -
Same procedure as last year? Same procedure as every year for the last truly static website holdouts: change the year in the template, re-compile, upload.2

This is the LAST TIME a critical PC component will fail me in the middle of a project. Wtf is up with hardware makers these days? Why can't you make a video card that will last for more than a year, AMD?? FFS!
Desktop for gaming, laptop for code. Now to redo my workstation AGAIN. 😭7 -
I had road repairs started under my apartment last year, during first lockdown. They lasted for 7 months4

Was there a recent CSS update or something? My website just broke all of a sudden. I haven't touched anything since last year WTF4

Tomorrow, I'll start my last year of study at a web development school.
At the end of it I'll get a title that'll allow me to get recognition around the world, but the school doesn't end until 9th September 2018, so in roughly in a year.
I'm honestly shitting my pants, wish me luck 😅2 -
Reminiscing my first tech sticker, this one's from my first hack-a-thon. :') gonna go to the same one in 2 weeks, kinda nervous because I didn't really learn much compared to last year. (but I shamelessly collect the stickers)1

Just had someone branch off my repo of some class assignments I did last year.
What are they up to.....
Better not be doing what I think he's doing.5 -
Background: Process issue in the plant that the workers said was a software problem. I’m a Software Dev Manager
Exec: This is broken and it is a software problem. We just noticed it this week.
Me: Couldn’t have been us, relevant code was changed this time last year. Sounds like a process issue.
Exec: Can you give me an exact date it was changed last year?
Me: (Seriously, WTF?... checks git...) It was changed on December 2nd, 2016. Couldn’t have been us.
Exec: Can you detail that change for us?
Me: (GTFO) No, not my problem, stop trying to make it my problem.1 -
Two days into the new year and you got made redundant after working there!
Yeah cheers for that! Could done it last year.

I just bought my laptop last year.

Approaching the end of high school is really harder than it seems before you actually get to the last year. So many possibilities ahead!
-
I'm close to one year at this company, and so much has changed. the amount of responsibility i have now is insane compared to last year. we'll have an intern this year, so there's gonna be someone learning the ropes from me. I'm having a say in bigger projects , I'm schooling people way over my pay grade, people actually come after me for help now, that's insane. what a fucking year1

Wait Ubuntu 18.04 daily builds have been released since November last year?!?!?!
Time to brick some shit! :-D -
Came across this in a part of a web service I inherited from a junior we fired last year.
I am no C# expert, but I do believe there are better ways to read a byte array from a JSON string, am I right?18 -

I've been working for a contractor company for the last half year, when I first started I was on a development team, happy and making progress, since I'm still a student I get perfomance reviews each month and I aced them all during my time at the development team.
Last month I was transfer to a supposed development team which turned out to be a support team, I use to write more code in two days with the other team than in all my time here. On my last performance I got an awful grade and I feel like I'm stuck here.undefined confessions of a dev new team rant when the devs are silent sucks support pichardo for president upvoteme linux random tag1 -
Ever work for a really big company and at the end of the year read the statement on how much profit they made?
Looking back at last years, while looking at the new codebase i'm working on and asking

Finished my first Advent of Code! ☃️ Pretty excited about that. Used Rust this year. Day 18 and 20 were brutal! Especially 18: it was the last one I finished just now.
Anyway, Happy Holidays everyone! 🎄1 -
My goal for 2020: actually finish a personal project.
Last year, I built 25% of a website, 10% of a companion app for a video game, and half of a command-line utility. I would really like to finish an entire project this year, but considering that I just started a new project that promises to be huge and unwieldy, that will probably have to wait for whatever project I try next after burning out on this one.1 -
Fucking linux foundation, bought the CKA exam last year and now they tell you if you take the exam after first of April the cert will only last 2 years instead of 3, wtf is this shit?
God certs are such a fucking scam! yet they are quite valuable if you have them on your cv so you just have to suffer in silence.6 -
Whatever the f is wrong with numpy devs!!!!
Like seriously bro....
I can't import the effing sklearn.decomposition to do some basic PCA and the best solution out there is to downgrade it to version 1.16.1. Like hell!!!!
Issue has been known since last year, but guess who cares effukers8 -
I've been working for a company since last year. I was very enthusiastic and happy because that company always boasted about being the leader of cloud solutions in my country and I was really interested in everything related to the cloud computing world . However, after one year, my current task is updating stupid fucking private products that no one knows on fucking old windows server.....3

Modern hardware is rubbish. I recently donated a load of computers from the 1970s and 1980s to a technology museum, they all worked well and could still be used and set up in the museum's displays. My more recent stuff, from the last few years, I decided to sell on eBay. Some of it just had to be thrown out, mostly due to non-replaceable batteries that would no longer charge. What nonsense is this? Why is it easier to use a 35-year-old computer than a 3-year-old Chromebook or 5-year-old iPad?5
-
Well today ended in a bang! Had a typo in a dd command and nuked my entire work VM. Last VM backup august 2020. Time to retrace the entire work environment for a year. Not much work was lost thou as most of it was already pushed.2

So on Thursday I left my first job as a Trainee Electronics Technician which i got given when i finished my last year of College, to become a .NET Web Developer this Monday. Trying to put the sadness aside from missing co-workers and be excited instead!1

Got warned for having low performance. Time to beg my previous employer to take me back when I rejected their offer last year.
If it worked, I will probably need to be a complete asshole to get laid off10 -
Only took 20 minutes to setup a Debian vm and get the satisfactory game server running in docker. And most of that was waiting. I feel so smart 🤓 compared to even just last year when I was googling basic commands linux commands8

Where are recently all this rust posts coming from? Did I just not notice them for the last half year or have they just started a few days ago? And why now?

Got a new job last year. Didn't want to be a contractor so they said contract to hire for what I thought was 6 months. When I get there, they said they meant a year. Fine. 18 months just passed and they renewed my contract for 3rd time without even mentioning full employment.
Now, because still a contactor, IT is making all non-essential contractors take two weeks of unpaid leave last two weeks of the year. Guess who was on that list?
I have only a week of pto from recruiter company to soften the blow but have to start over saving up for next trip.
Needless to say, already searching hard for my way out of there.3 -
Last working day for this year. My boss just told me, our customers shipped 80m nzd worthy fruits this year. Thanks guys 👍

Spent the last year coding on ACA eligibility metrics and end of year tax 1095c automation for the company's employees. Just now getting around to doing my own taxes.

Who else around here just realizes he spent more time debugging other people's shit than actually developing in a year of work, and thinks that this shouldn't be allowed?

Why do people have this antipathy toward Facebook and not Tiktok? Last year, the idea of no Tiktok had people up in arms? How is Facebook definitively worse? I’m curious.15

Context: large project moves to touch friendly UI, request and initial specs late last year, specs initial mockups early this year, designer promises final design before end of Q1.
Two sprints into development no fucking design, meeting today about it, designer has no fucking clue about what we actually agreed to last time. Promises again to have it for next time.
What the actual fuck? How difficult it is to least read up the fucking notes and do your fucking job that you are being paid for? Had a half fucking year!
After meeting...
Me: why do we even keep him around?
Pm: he is really overbooked...
Me: my balls are overbooked, don't promise if you can't deliver! (Leaves meeting room)
Fairly confident that this is the last project with this guy...
Am I the only one who just hates working with designers?2 -

So I quit my old job almost a year ago because of high stress and bad salary. The last day there was one of the happiest days of my career.
Now that I’ve enjoyed better pay, nicer work hours and zero stress for a year I am bored as hell. Thinking that I might need to change again just to get some stress going again (joke). Am I a horrible person? 😰3 -

Last year my boss decided to outsource a project I did the year before to another company.
Now he wants my opinion on why this company estimates 10h to do an upgrade on a API interface I did on that project.
Like I remember details on what I did two years ago. And like I have any idea how this company is rigged to handle the project. -
Made a friend when I did my first cosplay last October. This year was my 3rd year of studies, and I had to do ab internship sometime in the year. Friend hooked me up with their SO's company. This company shares the office with my current company due to long stories (it's an amicable relationship). After my internship the CEO of the other company offered my a 3 month contract back in March, which got extended until January. So here I am, working in Edutech helping the local South African colleges.1

I have always had android phones but after 18 month into 2 year contracts the batteries always become crap and last about 18 hours. Is this just an android thing or does it happen to iPhones as well?
I was thinking of going on the iPhone upgrade program to get a new phone each year and just getting a simple only deal.
Any advice welcome!13 -
Happy new year boys and girls.
Let’s hope the new one is not gonna be as fucked up
as the last one.1 -
When you advise your PM that it would probably be wise to make some time to refactor and learn the 10 year old system you got stuck working on.
'I wouldn't worry about that just yet'
Yep! you said that last time and look where it got us... -_-1 -
A big hurdle I'm fighting for last 1 year, is to convince a bunch of people having 10+ years of experience not to make production released of the same codebase from multiple branches.

Upgrades include a new Mainboard, stepper drivers, stepper dampers, custom firmware, new printed case, better extruder, OctoPI Server etc.
Oh yeah, and Animu ^^ -
Last year I made an app to generate project names. It now has over 1,000 downloads on Google Play. Sounds small compared to others, but I'm quite impressed from a personal side project with no advertising or publicity.

I've been DEV'in from past 4 years
Last year groups of 3 were formed for a group project, after a week one group mate asked me "what should I keep the file name for this java file".
Group Projects in college time still haunts me. -
I graduated last year from college and basically taught myself. Every time I see a "developer" label HTML as a programming language I can't help but to look down on them.2

It's about valentine's day again. any idea what a single programmer like me can do?.
last year I made a chatbot app to wish me valentine's day 😂7 -
There is an app on google play store called 4sale that is into human trafficking. This has been going on for a while now, BBC reported this last year, but surprisingly the app has not been taken down yet4

I've left the job last year, no planning for any big move yet. When I'm demotivated, I talk to my father and plan to join some company. And his response is "If you dare, why do you care?"

Last week I've been really wanting to start learning a new language. Not the programming type but the original type. Mainly for career opportunities, as I am getting into 2nd year of a 5 year cs curriculum.
Already know : English, Greek (native)
Currently deciding between:
French
Indian
Chinese (not Korean, maybe Japanese?)
Opinions? :)8 -
At last! After my phone got stolen last year, I finally have a new one, so I can use devrant again. Feeling like arriving home again :-)6

Security issues I encountered:
- Passwords stored as plain text until last year.
- Sensitive data over http until last year.
- Webservice without user/pass authentication. -
Last year we had a meeting to discuss lessening the frequency of meetings and let people work more of the day. After a three hours, it was decided that nothing was getting solved, resulting in three more meetings to be added to the calendar to follow up.

Either the horrible devil lady on my last project or the Mormon nepotism on my first project.
To clarify, the horrible devil lady set my career back a year. The Mormons just cost me job satisfaction. The job in Utah probably set me back though. -

Okay, so I was wondering if there are any dutch people here who work with C#. I'm in my last year and need to do one final internship but I'm having trouble finding one since I don't care much about web dev. I prefer developing apps and games which is why I went for a course in app dev but the only thing we've been doing is developing shitty websites and I've lost interest in it.
In my last internship I was working on a serious game which recruiters used for the pre selection of people who applied for a job. That was written in C# in unity and was definitely interesting to say the least.
So my question is if any of you have any ideas on where to take my last internship?23 -

Currently in my last year of application development (actually 90% web dev) and I'm going to pass this year.
After this I want to go to a higher school and I can pick computer science or software engineering.
I am completely lost, which one should I pick? Why?
I really love development, but I hear lots of great things about CS...
Do you guys have any input?1 -

In our final year project of my course in 12th grade we have to present a project that shows what we have learnt over the years. I my self am doing a game in unity and i was very surprised to discover one of my colleagues had decided to do a quizz as his final year project... in unity which he is them going to export to web. I'm not one yup judge but i think it's a very poor choice of platform.
I hope the projects are better this year because last year was a disaster and somehow there still were people with good grades.5 -

1. Be lost in thought less.
2. Listen to people more attentively.
3. Read 3 computer science books.
Note: Last year my resolution was to read 3 computer science books and I'm proud to say that I read 2.5 computer science books. Didn't fully reach it but 2 and a half books in a year is damn better than 0. They were: "Clean Code", "The Mythical Man-Month", and half of "Algorithms 4th Edition". -

It took me a month's time to adjust to working in co-working space last year and it took around similar this to adjust to working from home this year. Both working environments have there own pros and cons but somehow we all find a way to continue working.
Don't know what working environment lies ahead of me once this lockdown get's over but I hope I adjust again in similar manner there too :D -
Best: Completing the first year of my professional career doing what I like and learning from my team mates, which have been awesome. Wrote a couple of blog posts, they were my first, that helped me learn more and improve my communication.
Worst: On the last months of the year some work just got too repetitive which I think will lead me to some stagnation. -

2019. I found a guy, CTO of our client. 50+ age. He teaches a lot to us. In development, I enjoy this year, because this year has more learning then last year.
I start work on 3 more languages, see more possiblities in IT, Avionics Softwares, Aviation systems.
This year, I also learn a lot about data center power distribution.
So this year was full of learning and new things in development and IT.2 -

Just finished binge watching salvation in two days. One of the best series I watched in the last year. I highly recommend it. Although the technical aspect is unrealistic af.

Posting here after more than a year and getting through the pandemic.
I typed more lines of code during this pandemic compared to last 2 years. -
There’s a github script that helps you instantly generate a github contributions graph for the last year.

Almost one year later, I am still in the same company. Lol, I don't have enough courage to apply for a new job. However, we learned a new framework and language this year, so it is not as boring as the last 2 years before.1

Advice/input welcome:
I’m nearing the end of my first year of a 2 year SE program at college. I’m considering leaving at the end of this year and looking for a job, but I don’t have much of a portfolio and feel insecure about my ability to make it in this industry. I know it’s probably just impostor syndrome, but it’s a really hard feeling to shake. It’s a trade college, so the program is designed to have students work ready by the end, but there is a certificate for having completed the first year even though most students do both years.
I’m competent with java, web dev including JavaScript vanilla and bootstrap, ok with python and a lil c++, and I used c# over last summer in unity to develop a game I never finished. 2nd year is mostly more of the same, just more in depth. I’m feeling like idgaf about school anymore, and there are some things happening in my life that would benefit from a full time salary and a decent health care plan.
I spoke with an alum of the program who left after one year to work, and he strongly suggested I stay for the 2nd year, but wasn’t clear on why he thought that.
So what I wanna know is, from folks in the workforce, do you think I should stick it out for the last year and then look for work? Or would I be ok to just... go and start looking for a job now?2 -
Happy new year! Happy new year!.....and so onn.

It was all fine then one person messaged me "let's forget past fight's and start a new beginning, hope you and your family have a great year ahead" and i was seriously like, bro yesterday you told my girlfriend that I'm gay and using her to become a straight person but i love to sleep with mens🙄🙄🙄,what do you want from me. Even raju halwai is messaging me, happy new year! but i can consider his wishes he once gave me free chocolate. -
Is anyone still playing Screeps? Only got it recently, and it seems it isn't dead yet, but the last posts about it on devRant were more than a year ago.

So I'm kind of stuck this semester in my third computer science degree year.
Most subjects could have been interesting but 4 out of 5 teachers suck... I was thinking how to get motivation and dev rant is the place! I'm enjoying this place.
I'm doing my last year in California and want to get involved in a programming project or something. Could anyone recommend me a place or something?
Thank you in advance!

i do the website for this association and had the urge to overhaul everything, implement decent architecture and security, getting rid of awful php/html mixture. considered everything pretty fly and after going live did some minor adjustments primarily in the admin section. like instead of selecting the last 100 logs, all from the last year.
turned out there were 16 logins to the site within the last year. two board member logins (one person). impressive considering all of the functionality for administering the association it was capable of even before the rework.
so we do need a website, everyone wants to be updated, board administration is annoying but fuck my software?
more visitors than all of my other projects though. -
One of my office mate said that she is making the same resolution since last 8 years... And the resolution ia:
To not make any resolution for the year..😎 -
How to people enjoy office jobs in places where it’s basically summer all year?
We get a 2 month window of good weather where I live and the last thing I want to do right now is grab another ticket to work on.
