Lost my iPhone last night😭 - looked all over but no luck - last chance the gas station - called and the owner said he found a phone with devRant sticker on the back. I still was not sure as lots of devRant members in NY but yes it turned out to be mine. Nice!
And the best news is the gas station owner told his dev son about devRant! So my temporary loss may change his sons life. Sometimes things are just meant to be. 😀

I'm currently programming on the cms REST api for the privacy site (its finally getting somewhere by the way) and I just noticed that I'm programming way cleaner and WITH comments.

My subconcious is probably keeping the fact that the entirety of devRant will see my code in a not too far future 😅

Not only do I have to stop for 30mins to explain what things I've changed, but now I have to rant about it on devrant.

Believe it or not, this community has helped me overcome my impostor syndrome.

It's such an enormous relief whenever I open the app and read the rants, and I can actually relate to or understand many of them. It restores not only my confidence in my knowledge and skills, but also my motivation to learn and grow. It gives me strength to push forward instead of giving up on this path.

There are a lot of people hating on Microsoft (C#, .Net ...) in devRant. And there are a lot praising StackOverflow, linux and opensource.

I wonder how it makes them feel that stackoverflow is built on .Net and C# and is not open source!

I tried to bring my unofficial iOS devRant app "JoyRant" into the AppStore. It was available via TestFlight for years and it wasn‘t a problem there, apparently. Now for the AppStore, it is a problem.

I talked with the Apple review team for 3 weeks and the discussion went in circles.
They said that my app tries to disguise as or to misrepresent another app on the store (the official devRant app, even though it‘s not available anymore, apparently).

I was asked to remove all of the mentions of devRant from any description or any place in the app. I did. Even though it was stupid because how are people supposed to know that they need a devRant account to use my app? I‘m not allowed to mention devRant.

After that, they said that it can not have the name JoyRant because it sounds too similar to devRant.
I changed it to devJoy everywhere, the app, the meta data for the app store, the github page where the required legal crap is hosted, and in the legal documents themselves.
Did it help? No, it didn‘t.

Apple then proceeded to claim that my app is trying to deceive the users into thinking that this is the official devRant app. Even though I have explicitly stated in the description that it is just an unofficial devRant client.

Now apple says that I should "revise the app content".
Which I assume means that I need to make it something different. Yeah. Great suggestion!

So, I will rename the app back to JoyRant and provide it via TestFlight, as it was before.

devRant on a HoloLens!

The HoloLens is really cool, I was allowed to use it after a short hackathon. I am still surprised, but it works great and the concept feels natural after a short moment - web browsing is not recommended as no website is optimized for mixed reality (yet?).

My dad's laptop is dying so I decided to give him my old one (because I ordered a new laptop). I asked him if should I keep Linux on it, or should I install Windows. He said "ehh, keep the Linux". So there it is! Linux Mint on top of Dell Latitude E6320 and another person converted to Linux!

I am working on a DEVRANT TOOLBOX for the Firefox Desktop Browser.
It includes a dark mode and some new functions (autoreload, colored notifs, image preview on mouseover).
The Alpha version is finished.

As a first step I created an experimental version just for the dark mode (no other functions).
Its alpha and experimental, so I will not not published it.

I need some testers for it. My email is temporary available in my users profile for that.

I feel that I should mention my reason for having joined devRant.

Although I often write computer programs, I do not consider myself to be a computer programmer, for the problems which I solve often do not pertain to the method which I use to solve a problem with a computer program. Rather, I am an intelligence analyst, and this has been my title for approximately sixteen (16) years.

I joined devRant not only because I wished to better the computer programs which I write, although this could be better accomplished by again reading the specifications for the programming languages which I use, but also because I wished to join an on-line community of which the members are interesting and competent. As I read threads, I observe that both of these requirements have been matched, with the emphasis being placed on the latter requirement.

I thank the majority of you for maintaining an on-line community which is not (total) crap. Ha.

Some of my colleagues realised that I have a devRant account. Of course they peeped into my smartphone screen when I was reading some weird stuff on devRant. They went on to install devRant and uninstall it the next day after realising that it is not 'Tinder of Developers' :D

I feel as if my friends from school are dropping me one by one and it's boiling down to my IT friends. I really like my friends and stuff but they're treating me like I'm invisible so I'm not posting this on instagram, not on twitter, and I'm not texting this to anyone, because I'm really starting to realize how big of an impact the life of IT studies has on me, and how amazing the community is. The yellow background looks great on our avatar, but could you please not use it as background for a rant? You're burning the eyes out of my skull.

After 2 years at the uni with 6 programming courses, I stopped studying and started working.

So I kinda left with some expectation or demand for some level of standard, not the highest, but at least not expecting diarrea dog shit level of quality.

On my first jobs, I was pretty shocked with their outdated technologies, terrible workflows, insanely unsafe setups and vomit inducing management. I thought "this isn't normal, this shouldn't be happening"

After being for a week on devrant, I now think the opposite is not normal.

So rant-ish question:

Since not much is happening around here, can ya’ll open source devRant so community can work on it? Seems like a perfect candidate for open sourcing.

If you move rant feed to "Recent" and saw a bunch of rant u already read but you keep scrolling down hoping to see new rant but u fail cause rant policy keep people from posting new rant for 2 hour and not many new rant has been post.
This is a nice feature. It make u self aware that "crap, maybe too much time on devRant". Even if you addict to devRant but by this policy -> It force you to really close its app and checking it on another free time. (more healthy than another social media I guess 😂)

Got a notification from devRant. Saw that my post got 30++, Paused music and stopped opening my js files on my project, wrote a quick email to stickers@devrant.io, and then ended up browsing for so long I do not even know/ realize what time it is now, and certainly not what the time was when I started.

Fun fact: I got my first job on starting of week 77 as a developer. Coincidence! I hope not.

Im getting more and more bugs in devRant on my LG G2.

- Links cannot be opened
- profiles can not be viewed
- double tapping a rant opens the rant twice (tapping five times opens it 5 times) instead of voting it up.
- once in a while an opened rant shows up again under all the comments (with all comments as well). When this happens its exactly the ammount of comments.

Im not sure where to report this. If @dfox could take a look at this?

Funnily enough, Wappalyzer tells me devRant runs on Ubuntu.

And anyway, Ubuntu is a good operating system. It's not my first choice, but it works well as a gateway drug to Linux. I have it running on a couple EC2s because its the simplest to provision and set up.

Around 30 years ago I started a game on my Commodore 64, I was about 15 at the time, and back then you had to load the games from cassette tapes.

So I started the cassette player and waited for the game to load, and when it was done I stopped the tape. My dad saw this and he asked :

I'm following devrant from a while now, but just joined.
It's one of the best dev communities out there.
I don't usually post a lot on forums and stuff like that, but expect from me a lot of ++s :)

Also, English is not my main language, if i make any mistakes fell free to correct me

I really hate interruptions when i'm deep in my code. Headset on and blocking out the world, then get annoyed taps on the shoulder from boss for not greeting people.
So now i'm out of the zone, browsing devrant and have pissed off the boss for being anti-social.

I think one of the weak points in the official devRant app is performance. That's probably due to the cross-platform stuff...

You see, if I shutoff 6 out of 8 cores on my CPU and force my GPU to only run at the lowest frequency possible, devRant gets HELLA laggy. However, games like Geometry Dash run just fine. No lag whatsoever.

It's not that bad though, just explains why devRant uses so much battery on some phones.

Developers are supposed to be eager to try new stuff, however most devs on devRant prefer to hate on Edge and hate who use it.

I'm not here to defend Microsoft but I bet 95% of the people that hate on Edge haven't tried the latest version.

It's really easy on weaker hardware and on battery life. Try using an old ultrabook (2nd gen i5) as I did for some time while using Chrome or Firefox as your main browser!

Yeah it was Saturday night but not for me. I was at bus stop and my jiofi device was in back pocket and after some time I was coming back to my room and thinking let's switch on wifi. People, even on devrant, are complaining about having to change their Twitter passwords. A major security event is not the only occasion to change your password (for anything).

You should change your passwords for everything regularly. Like, once every month or two.

I thought I found something on devrant app turn out it is an Android thing. Not sure if a bug or not.

I use Android 7.1.2 default keyboard . And Google place a small G logo at the top left corner of keyboard. Clicking that show the gif, emoji, language setting etc menu.

On devrant and a few apps I have tried, that G icon remains on the screen in a transparent and almost not visible state but at the same position after hiding the keyboard. Like a watermark.

At first I thought devrant app background has that mark. Even took a screenshot to share here. Turn out it doesn't show up on screenshot. Because when I zoomed in on the image, the icon remained at same position on screen. So it is showing on Google photo app as well.

Any of you guys have that issue?

So this is the case I have not coded in a long while and was actually starting to miss it. I was LITRALLY considiring starting to code again, then i went on devrant and read about two rants and you know what? Im good i dont wanna start code again

Since im still a student in software dev (am I still welcome here on devrant? :P), it is easy for me to not do coding. Specially because the summerbreak just started. However I am going to try and learn some stuff about network programming, that caught my attention :D

After being on devrant for a while, I've been inspired to move to Linux, and my desire to learn is making me consider Arch. My only issue is that I don't have a computer to swap OS', because there are some people who depend on my laptop when I'm not home (more on that another time, maybe), and they will have a fit if I switch. 😥

Anyone have any experience on booting from a external HDD (and not a stick)?

Sees notification on Devrant. open app. go to ++ tab on notifcations. notifications not loaded. pull the feed a few times. a small delay and they appear. enjoy ++. repeat every hour or so.

Why install a native app to use devrant on a mobile phone? Your website is not totally broken in a mobile browser. Responsive web is possible in 2020, believe me and give it a try!

So, I will try to use devRant as an issue traker for itself!

Issue:
Sometimes a gif shows on click just a blank black screen and an x for closing on top left corner. And it does not change after some waiting.
The issue stays the same after closing and opening the specific gif again and again. If it is loading for a long time, then a animation indicating that would be nice.
Strangely, other gifs are loaded and shown instantly.

Every time I open devRant, I have >0 Notifs. Why am I never notified by Android about this anymore? I used to get one Android notification for each devRant notif in the list. Now, my phone never goes off for any of them and nothing from devRant appears in my android notifications. I did not change my settings. Running latest app version on Android 6.

I really have to say i love and hate dev rant :( Why is the feed so so so so bad. I see almost the same posts everytime/day. Even when i refresh. And its not better when looking at today/week/month/alltime. Is the Devrant just not maintslned anymore or are there just soo few users.
On the other hand though i find it veey enterteining and relateable at times. Much better then some twitter/insta etc .. i hope devrant will get more love from the devs and more user :)

Guys, you're helping them. They feed off it, they note it as engagement, and they're more likely to continue posting. (Not just on devrant, but everywhere.) Just downvote / report as spam and move on.

Tody I finally decided to go Google free in my device. Now I have 0 Google services in my phone and so far I'm loving it.

All apks can be found on apkmirror and f-droid but devRant is not available on any of those platforms so I have to restore my previous backed up apk from playstore.

Yeah and I'm not on any socialmedia whatsoever like FaceCrap and InstaHeadache. Feels like my phone would last for 2 days on single charge.

Accidentally reported my friend on devrant. I was messing with him and I expected the report to require some type of a reason. Guess not.

During the time I've been part of the DevRant community, I've noticed that users (including myself) sometimes contribute posts that are not quite rants. These are sometimes posts about the DevRant itself, reaching out to the community for assistance on a project, etc.

How can I find all my comments (not posts) on devRant?

Apparently my devRant++ status is bugged... but the payments are coming in. Also I'm not on the supporters list anymore.

TLDR: I wanted to change email to new one, but I could not remember which one I have
currently. I found out an API in DevRant JS files for email verification and used
it to find it out.

So, I am moving from Gmail to Protonmail Pro, absolutely love their service.
I wanted to do same on Devrant but I could not figure out my current mail for
"I lost my password" form. My Password Manager have only login saved, and profile does
not show email address.

I thought that this user information is stored on server so it have to be some way to retrieve it. I dug
in source code and I've found:
