Dear dfox,
Thank you for not making your app completely change layouts and screw up scrolling whenever we turn on our sides when reading rants in bed, unlike nearly every mobile web browser out there. We all really appreciate it.

Hey everyone,
For about the last 24 hours, there was unfortunately an issue with the algo feed where scrolling did not show more rants. This has now been fixed.
One of our background queues stopped processing for some reason which caused rants to not properly get marked as read for algo.
If you notice any other issues with this, please let me know. Thanks!11 -
Lately my mornings have started out with sitting on my front porch with a cup of coffee and a smoke for about 15 or 20 minutes scrolling through devrant.
Probably why ive been in a better mood these days31 -
Working very quickly on the swearing word/sentence generator right now.
I'm scrolling through @AlexDeLarge's rants like there's no tomorrow xD11 -

I was just scrolling down a Facebook feed and a part of a picture with Linus Torvalds appeared.

I can't watch others use a computer.
That's not how you ask google a question.
You're clicking the wrong way.
You click like an idiot.
Why are you scrolling like that? do you hate moving down the page so mutch it makes you scroll like that?
Why am i forced to sit through this?
When will this end?13 -
Imagine being a gitlab employee scrolling through devRant being the reason for 90% of todays rants6

Light vs dark IDE themes
I personally prefer dark and all my coworkers use light. When they ask me to look at something, it hurts my eyes just scrolling for 5 minutes on their computer.19 -
When I'm sitting at home scrolling through rants and laughing once in a while, my boyfriend always wants to know what's so funny. Most of the time I then have to explain the rant and he always says "you IT guys are sooo weird" and shakes his head

I really hate Apple for popularizing reversed scrolling on touchpads. It doesn't make any fucking sense.16

So I dropped out from University after 5 years because I was fed up with it, took a look at the job market, found something interesting, applied for it and got it. Now I'm here on my first day, sitting on the toilet, scrolling through DevRant.
Life is good.12 -
I was on Tumblr and I thought I was on devRant so when I was scrolling I kept wondering why everyone kept posting book aesthetic pictures.
Either I spend way to much time on devRant, or I need to sleep.7 -
I just discovered that you can tap the title of devRant app to load new rants instead of just scrolling to the beginning to make a pull to refresh :( FML10

I built an infinite scroll module today that loaded in more content when you scroll down. Issue was it sent a request for every pixel you scrolled.
Needless to say, many, many, many Ajax requests were sent to the server. Oops.4 -
What the shit!!!
At 11:00
While studying
"ah... I'm sleepy, can't tolerate any more", and just go to bed.
At 11:05
While scrolling rants
"hahaha... So true, same happened with me.. bla bla...."
At 12:47
Doing same thing from last 1 hour 40 mins
Even not sleepy yet!!!
It's too addictive. Having so much good posts, much better than fb feeds.... Loving the rants... New experience3 -
Hey DevRant Community :)
I've been a silence lurker till now, but I really do enjoy scrolling through your new rants everyday, :D ... I'm now quite terrified of my first job interview, but that's alright... I guess... ._.
What I'm trying to say is.... Have a great day everyone :31 -

Current project:
A fairly simple and basic single page-ish project with no framework at all.
No backend or database.
No jQuery.
Plain old Gulp task, npm scripts and Webpack.
Some parallax and other scrolling effects.

Alright, I've had it. I was scrolling through Walmart when I saw a kititchen utensil holder with a BLUETOOTH SPEAKER? Who needs this? It probably doesn't even sound that good. Two types of days:
Sit down and say imma be productive and then just end up scrolling through unrelated articles for 3 hours.
And, Sit down and say imma just do something quickly before going out and then end up restructuring whole parts and being up till 6am. -
Woke up an hour early today.
I could get up and be at work early, so I can leave earlier to use the afternoon on this nice spring day.

Geeksforgeeks is fucking trash. Fuck the creator of the site. I don't want to sign up just to be able to browse the site. Even if I disable this horrible modal, JavaScript still detects scrolling and scrolls back.
Fuck you. Fuck the people who create "features" like this.3 -
I heard good things about Edge recently and thought that I should give it a try for a few days.
I’ve opened the same pdf file in multiple Edge windows and and tabs, each scrolled to a different page.
#1
The middle-mouse button scrolling is broken on half of the windows and tabs. You press the button, you see the scroll mouse curser. But it doesn’t scroll.
#2
Scrolling horizontally to an area which wasn’t visible before, the content there is extremely blurry. Scrolling vertically to different pages doesn’t fix it. Is it the pdf? No. It’s just Edge. Zoom in and out again and the blurriness is fixed for now. Until it comes back later on a random page.
#3
Duplicate another tab and suddenly it crashes all of the tabs and windows of Edge. Now I need to open them all again and scroll to the positions that they were before…
If you think that it was just a one time issue, you are wrong. All of them happened multiple times and after Windows reboots.
I’m back to Firefox again.4 -
geek fun fact!
Did you know? Swiping down requires more calories than scrolling down on your mouse!3 -
CSS "scroll-behavior: smooth" implements smooth scrolling with CSS only. That's pretty awesome, even though JavaScript had a similar implementation, which has, equal to "scroll-behavior: smooth", bad browser support. I hope browsers implement it fast and it performs good.5

The interface for time input in outlook Web on mobile is driving me crazy!! It's not as if there was a built in control that is well supported in all modern browsers.... Right
1. You can't tap on an hour to select it
2. You can only select by scrolling
3. The scrolling is "smooth scrolling". So you have N O fucking chance to select the time slot you wanted. After too much time has passed you just give up and accept that your meeting will be at 09:57
4. In order to go up in time you constantly activate the"pull to refresh" feature of Chrome.
I'm definitely no mindless MS hater but this I cannot tolerate.6 -

Fucking search bars. It seems like no one is interested in making search on their website actually work. It always gives me some random shit all while missing relevant results I can find myself by scrolling through menus. It’ll miss stuff even while searching the exact subtext. Every. Single. Time.
If it’s not an open source library’s docs with Algolia, you can forget about their search bar.5 -
News sites with infinite-scrolling are so damn annoying.
A new random article I am not interested in suddenly loads under the current news article when skimming through it by dragging the scroll bar, and then throws me far down into unknown territory due to the sudden change of the height of the page.
It also happens similarly on Imgur photo galleries: when I drag down the scroll bar to quickly seek through the images, the "explore posts" section suddenly loads hundreds of "trending" and "viral" (uninteresting junk and spam) photos under the gallery, and since this adds lots of height to the page, I get pulled right into it and my window is full of such posts. Both distracting and memory-consuming.
YouTube's infinite scrolling comments and video lists are acceptable as of writing, since they are on-topic, and no off-topic "trending" spam, and they do not load too much at once, which does not throw me down too far.
Quote from https://elite-strategies.com/infini... :
> The footer of a website is like the shoes of a person, it ties the whole outfit (or website) together. Footers are awesome because it gives you a chance to tell people where to go when they reach the bottom of the page.1 -
Good thing the maintenance is at night here, so I won't miss out on scrolling rants :)
Don't do the GitLab and do changes on the wrong db cluster :P2 -
Inspired by @shahriyer 's rant about floating point math:
I had a bug related to this in JavaScript recently. I have an infinite scrolling table that I load data into once the user has scrolled to the bottom. For this I use scrollHeight, scrollTop, and clientHeight. I subtract scrollTop from scrollHeight and check to see if the result is equal to clientHeight. If it is, the user has hit the bottom of the scrolling area and I can load new data. Simple, right?
Well, one day about a week and a half ago, it stopped working for one of our product managers. He'd scroll and nothing would happen. It was so strange. I noticed everything looked a bit small on his screen in Chrome, so I had him hit Ctrl+0 to reset his zoom level and try again.
It. Fucking. Worked.
So we log what I dubbed The Dumbest Bug Ever™ and put it in the next sprint.
Middle of this week, I started looking into the code that handled the scrolling check. I logged to the console every variable associated with it every time a scroll event was fired. Then I zoomed out and did it.
Turns out, when you zoom, you're no longer 100% guaranteed to be working with integers. scrollTop was now a float, but clientHeight was still an integer, so the comparison was always false and no loading of new data ever occurred. I tried round, floor, and ceil on the result of scrollHeight - scrollTop, but it was still inconsistent.
The solution I used was to round the difference of scrollHeight - scrollTop _and_ clientHeight to the lowest 10 before comparing them, to ensure an accurate comparison.
Inspired by this rant: https://devrant.com/rants/1356488/...2 -

Hi. I'm new here and liking it.
My rant today: Lofty business guy tells my small dev team that he knows exactly how everything should look and work because he knows exactly what users want out of the webapp experience.... goes on to tell us to make an editable, side-scrolling table that is also mobile-friendly, for users to manually input a ton of data.... -

"Web design has a bad reputation for being stylistically trendy and same-looking. Some guy does a parallax scrolling site, and now your boss wants you to add that to your corporate PR website for some reason. God damn I hate that "smart" and "convenient" autoscrolling to focus areas which has kind of exploded on webpages, most of the time just fucking the user over while one is trying to read something or generally use the site.

Is it just me or does anyone else hate the "MORE RANTS" feature/option of Devrant.
Can't we simply have a scrolling featuring with never-ending set of Rants the same way as reddit does??

@dfox
Just a suggestion, when scrolling down on a user's profile, their user information should scroll up too along with the 'rants/+1's/comments' tabs and then those tabs stay fixed while the user information hides. Sort of like what Twitter does
There's not much room to view the actual content with all the user information in the way. Of course once we scroll back up, it will then reveal the user info again
:-)4 -
Hpw cool would it be if devRant eventually was able to run in a multi window for android? Would really love to play some YouTube videos while scrolling through the feed4

@dfox @trogus
Here's another suggestion (sorry to keep bothering your team!).

DevRant is starting to look more like a shitty fucking combination of Pinterest/Instagram to me.
Everybody's taking memes/pics out of other sites and upload it here, as if we devs don't follow meme sites ourselves.

3. Scrolling in App B changes the sound in App A. Not raising or lowering volume, mind, but full on dropping samples and warbling the sound.
It's almost impressive how fucked up that is.3 -

I broke my phone so now I've revived an old S5360. Does anyone happen to have a devRant APK for Android 2.3 on ARMv6? I figured if Facebook doesn't work then it's high time I start binge scrolling devrant instead.3

Has anyone else noticed these slight imprecicions where the the background peeks out at the bottom sometimes? It is pretty hard to spot, only happens sometimes after scrolling. Or is my display resolution just too high?5

Has anybody ever touched the top corner of an app and said “yep, I totally meant to do that and wanted to scroll to the top of the document/ feed/ whatever.”
Because I haven’t. This “feature” sure seems to cause a lot of unintended behavior which sounds a lot like a bug. Who is out here developing stuff like this? Please stop! Do some real UX research with how we actually use the apps!1 -
Spent the last 3 days on a jQuery scrolling bug that has been in the product for 3 years. It was a 5 line fix.

I thought I'd give flutter a test, a simple list app lags on the following:
1. Scrolling the "Lazy Loaded" list
2. Tapping on a list item to change an icon color
I followed their "lesson" in creating that app
Now tell me, why should I invest time on this?6 -

Just for my curiosity. On your trackpad / mouse, do you've a natural scroll or a reverse one? I find very well with the reverse scroll but I have read that the natural one should be the preferred because of the concept

My Fuxking iPhone just keeps scrolling up. I have no idea why and it did not drop. It’s literally a week old. Among all the shit I have refused to give a shit about, this now number one. In a way it controls my social media usage. Scrolling down Instagram and suddenly it bounces back up like “bitch get off this damn app”. I oblige. My ability to simply not give a fuck always surprises me. Lmao I can’t even scroll down my emails without two fingers, one literally holding the screen so it doesn’t bounce back up. Apps that auto load are the worst and I should probably be more concerned. I can barely use iMessage coz it keeps scrolling up to previous messages and coz of how iMessage was built, it’ll simply keep scrolling up to load old messages.5

Copy-paste elbow.
This is what I'm calling spending a few hours scrolling up and down and pressing the same keys hundreds or thousands of times, because, apparently single quotes look neater than double quotes.
Now you're in pain for the rest of the day and painkillers don't help at all.
Go to hell copy-paste elbow. Now.3 -
Me: (lying peacefully with my legs touching sky and scrolling through some tutorials on my phone)

Why are hooks so awful?
What justifies having everyone using React relearn how to do things when hooks do not bring any new features to React?
Why does getting setInterval to work with hooks require a ~3000 word blog post by a maintainer which constantly assures you this IS a step forward?
Is scrolling up and down a class component really so hard that this clusterfuck is worth it?

Honestly thinking really seriously about deleting facebook, as it occupies a good portion of my day with its scrolling up and down.. Got my QBASIC demopart ready for testing, completely optimized and ready to roll. Found 486 owner (33MHz, 8MB of RAM) who tested it for me.
Takes 13 seconds for the scroller to draw each frame at 300x200.
No possible optimizations are present, everything's crushed as far as it'll go, meaning a completely different method of scrolling is needed.
(Still faster than the array method by 37 seconds per frame, but y'know...)

I'd like to take a moment to appreciate how much I've needed something like devRant.

I feel like I'm getting lost in social media these days. I know I should be aware of this happening, but lately I start scrolling on my phone and don't realize 20-30 mins fly by me.
Weird, that it's happening to me now.3 -
How is that happening??
It's Thursday already !
All I've done this week is scrolling on devRant and Reddit, shit !
[But I like it a little, because this month I'm already broke] -
Dear Instagram, Reddit, Twitter, devRant, and almost every social media site available:
Scrolling down on a phone is much less natural than scrolling sideways and having the scroll snap to the next unit of content.
Like every pictures/ gallery app. It's a lot easier to focus on one piece of content and it even shortens the duration of scroll required in many cases thanks to the snapping.5 -
i want to make a website like https://neal.fun
what should i put on it?
so far i want optical illusions, css tricks & parallax scrolling, maybe a constellation drawer, tensorflow image stylizer, a surgical simulation, scroll the length of mount everest, something showing the inside of the earth, and maybe a game
any suggestions/additions?15 -

Applications are now made vertical scrolling and everytime you refresh, it stimulate to be a slot machine . So it's basically a feeling of gambling that keeps you up and motivated all the time.

I've determined a simple formula for how to get people to stay in your app for long periods of time:
1. Infinity scrolling
2. OPTIMIZE BATTERY USAGE
Why? You can't infinitely scroll if your battery's dead.

It's fuckin midnight, after an exhausting day. Instead of working on a company, why don't each one of us just create a blog site, then add some ads, we share our url here and we'll gonna visit each shared url to generate traffic so we can generate revenue.
Oh if only it could work that way. These what if scenarios sometimes coming to my mind at night. Sorry for the interruption, keep scrolling.3 -

If Google finally made pull-to-refresh optional on Chrome for Android, it would be an admission of failure.
The failure to realize four years earlier that pull-to-refresh is potentially annoying to users, and the failure to listen to the abundant feedback by users who lost submissions or who interrupted playing media due to refreshing accidents.
One can assume that Google has something like a "user experience team". Didn't even one of these "highly qualified" people remotely consider that assigning the same finger movement to scrolling up and to refreshing could be a potential annoyance? Didn't this possibility go through at least one of their IQ 130 brains?
Now guess which is the more frequent purpose of swiping down. Scrolling up or refreshing a page?
Only one of the two is wanted at a time. Either scrolling up or refreshing. Assigning the same finger movement to two things at once is a downright terrible idea.
By making the pull-to-refresh anti-feature impossible to deactivate, Google effectively is begging its users to leave for Opera Mobile or Samsung Internet.9 -
Does anybody have an idea how the height of the scrollbar of the devRant app is determined? It changes while scrolling, and I have not figured out yet why.4

I just noticed something.... I think I read more rants if they're displayed in pages with a scrollbar instead of infinite scrolling in the app.

Feature request: could we use the volume buttons for scrolling? 9gag app style? Personally, I love lying down and just using the buttons to scroll down to eternity. I'm willing to code it myself, for Android. @dfox2 -
You have just learned flexbox and how to arrange things in CSS. You can use flexbox without even looking at your notes or the web.
And suddenly you saw a tv displaying a web app which show a que number with off-grid looking style with small scrolling(not sized properly inside viewable area i.e 100% vh )
The OCD start.... Or your spider sense is tingling wanting to make the correction...haha1 -
Hi mates..
The default Network Manager Applet provided by Xubuntu is unbearable.
It randomly resizes the applet popup into different sizes eachtime.
No nees to tell about the unnecessary scrolling on popup.
Is there any alternative for this...?8 -
What do you think about the new Youtube layout?
New Youtube, new bugs.
I reported a bug when it was opt-in and guess what, it's still here: in subscription feed's listed view, scrolling is laggy after loading more items with stepless scrolling (e.g. Chrome w/ touchpad). So many unnecessary animations.
It's just really frustrating when you try to info large company about a bug and they do nothing. The previous ones are also still there...
I guess it's time to reboot my Youtube Data API client project, which I started just for this reason.3 -

I hate those people that comment on threads saying shit like “just google it” or “oh fuck another [insert popular topic] thread we don’t need another one.” Fuck off. It’s an online discussion forum. If it’s shit content the mods will remove it, otherwise no one is forcing your sorry, lonely pathetic ass to stop scrolling, click the thread, and read the god damn post. Just fucking turn off your computer and read a book.2

question to UWP C# devs:
how do you guys handle scrolling ?

Is it just me... Or is there like two different scrolling behaviours in the app on android? When I've for the blue theme with white text it seems really gittery when I'm first scrolling down rant comments or the main rants feed.. Then about halfway down it goes much smoother... No idea why...

Posting here so everyone can tell me if they have the same problem. I can't scroll through older notifications, so I get stuck with notifications in the end since I can't read them (outside the limit fetched). I think @dfox should implement infinite scrolling like on the Rants screen.
Do any of you suffer from the same problem? -

I was scrolling devrant as we do and spotted something intriguing.

Following are the only real problems I had with my XFCE Manjaro (I guess essentially XFCE problems). My question is, is it just me?
Touchpad problems:
The synaptics deprecation kinda f'ed me up.
I tried sticking to synaptics, but I had an issue where if I connected a usb mouse the touchpad would sometimes stop working (it's deprecated after all).
So I switched to libinput. The default movement feels good (synap felt kinda slippery)... but then... NO COASTING/KINETIC SCROLLING in a lot of apps? WTF?!
Would kinetic scrolling work in general if I switched to a wayland based DE?
The alt tab has a delay:
you would expect one of the most lightweight DEs to have near instant switching. But no, I have like almost full second delay, and for the life of me I can't find the way to customize it.
Thr battery management is kinda stupid. Even though I set the thing to hibernate or sleep in low battery it never does. -
@dfox I cannot scroll down the list of somebody's or my own rants on the profile screen. I use the Android app, and scrolling after a point becomes a tedious process only allowing a millimeter at a time. Could you please fix this?5

Hello UI developers, I have a question regarding the iOS 13 preview web page. Link: https://apple.com/ios/.... Could you please help me simulate the scrolling and zoom-out effect?
Thanks!4 -
I love how the devRant webapp is intercepting scroll events (I assume) such that attempting to scroll down results in one step down, two steps up.
Why? Is this an attempt to solve jellypotato for infiniscrolling?
Looking further I see the scrollbar itself is actually getting smaller, like some element on the page is extending beyond the end or something. 🤔
I don't know, man...4 -

Is scrolling broken on devRant on Firefox for anyone else? When I click on a rant and try to scroll, some wonky piece of Javascript keeps bumping me back up as I try to scroll down, with both the scroll wheel and the scroll bar. God damn it, stop hijacking scrolling! There is no reason for you to!3

Seeing as I will be scorned for asking this on SO, and there's a ton of devs here that probably had this conundrum: how have you solved horizontal scrolling when working? I know shift + mw+/- works but what's the use having a mouse with macro functionality if not to simplify that? My current software supports lua scripting (but I don't know how to write it). I see some people requesting this while googling I but cannot find anyone that has a solution. The closest I get is a user requesting it from Logitech as they apparently have the same but for ctrl+mw in their products.10

Then later, projects delay -
Does anyone else just keep on tirelessly scrolling down the rant feed like Facebook? And oh, also read and interact with the rants unlike Facebook where we just "meh" on most of the posts until we find something that catches our eye?
