How do i learn coding in single night? - someone asked me.
I gently replied : Pack your Laptop, and travel to North Pole in beginning of winter, you'll have 6 month of night to learn coding.
Once there - really just Google it there are tons of Excellent tutorials on web.6 -

I want to utilize Angular 2 which means I'll need to learn TypeScript. I also want to use the new .Net Core and EF Core 1.0. Oh and I want to handle authentication using JWT!
Wow, that's gonna be a lot of effort to get things off the ground... maybe instead I'll use this time to learn some new concepts. Maybe watch this episode of Fun Fun Function, or maybe this video on writing Assembly code for an app on Raspberry Pi, that sounds cool!

Got a course on Udemy for fun (work provides the account). Inside of the comments for a lecture (that I knew was going to leave people stumped) one dude complained that no one was answering his question......in Spanish. All other questions were made in Spanish, in a course thought by some Serbian dude.

Not necessarily on here, but Devs tend to bitch about designers and their lack of basic dev skills/understanding (talking about webdev). But when devs try to design it usually ends with a horrendous piece of visual garbage. Respect each others profession and the outcomes will be better. Software engineering is how to run projects and it is compulsory to learn python and no mention of got it any other vcs, wtf?
What the hell is that type of college. Trust me I am no way saying python is weak, but for learning purpose the depth of language and concepts like pass by reference, memory leaks, pointers.
And learning algorithms, data structures, is more important than machine learning, trust me if you cannot model the data, get proper training data, testing data then you will get screewed up outputs. And then again every one who hype these kinds of stuff also think that ml with 100% accuracy is greater than 90% and overfit the data, test the model on training data. And mostly the will learn in college will be by hearting few formulas, that's it.
Learn a language (concepts in language) like then you will most languages are easy.

I wasn't sure what to say at the moment, but then I thought of something.
Lodash is the most depended upon package in npm. 90k packages depend on it, more than double than the second most depended upon package (request with 40k).
Lodash was also created 6 years ago.
This means lodash has been heavily tested, and is production ready.
This means that reading and understanding its code will be very educational.
Also, every lodash function lives in its own file, and are usually very short.
This means it's also easy to understand the code.
You could start with one of the "is..." (eg isArray, isFunction).
The reason for such choice is that it's very easy to understand what these functions do from their name alone.
And you also get to see how a good coder deals with js types (which can be very impredictible sometines).
And to learn even more, read the test file for that function (located in tests/<original file name>.js. For the most part they are very readable and examples of very good testing code.

You know, one of my fav ranters constantly shits on one of my main languages :P which is Java. But shit I would lie if I said that I have not learned something from what he has to say. Truth be told I am aware of the pitfalls and bad design decissions of a lot of my favorite langs: Python, PHP, JS, Java, Go etc. And I think it is benefitial to everyone to understand the things that our fav stacks fail at doing in order to become better devs.

Worst code I ever had to touch: a React application, createClass era, before redux was a thing, that had everything in one fucking component.
Every fucking thing.
This was a simple video chat application, but still. The component's code included:
- Views (contact list and video call screen) and logic to switch between them;
- All application state;
- API calls;
- Websocket message handling;
- WebRTC logic (getUserMedia and p2p streaming).
This app was built by one person in one month for a demo. That person left the company after the demo and I had to maintain that mess without zero React knowledge (I was doing angular at that time). On his last day he gave me a crash course and an overview of how the app worked.
Around that time I attended a few meetups and a conference with talks about React. That, my curiosity and ability to learn by refactoring helped me a lot when I had to add new features and fix bugs in that app.5 -
I've now for months been lurking on this awesome app and I love the community. I've been trying to self learn coding but kept hitting a wall. But now i'm starting in school to learn coding and i'm so exited to learn it and be a part of this awesome community.3

If you're currently in college and wish to get placed in a major tech giant like Amazon or Facebook:
Don't learn React.js, instead learn Linked lists.
Don't learn Flutter, instead learn Binary search trees.
Don't learn how to perform secure Authorization with JWTs, instead learn how to recursively reverse a singly linked list.
Don't learn how to build scalable and fault tolerant web servers, instead learn how to optimally inverse a binary search tree.
These big tech companies don't really care what real world development technologies you've mastered. Your competence in competitive programming and data structures is all that matters.

So I found a course that shows how to make purely procedural animation for characters. The demo on youtube was pretty amazing. It is like 9 hours of coursework. I am expecting some good information from this. The course is for Unreal 5. I intend on extrapolating the relevant data to use with Godot.
I started watching the videos and everything is being done in blueprints. Not sure what I was expecting. The goal is to do procedural animation in Godot. The logical place to start is to install Unreal 5 so I can learn the blueprints and transfer that knowledge to Godot. Kinda funny. Yet another launcher I "get" to install.
The goal is reduce the artwork pipeline. If I can rig characters correctly I am hoping I can share animation procedures and not have to spend hours keyframing animations. Also, code that moves stuff is cool. I genuinely want to know how to make that work. No idea if the goal is achievable.

Freakin hell, if I'd get some money for every byte order mismatch on testing interfaces, I'd be a be a billionaire.
And why are all those highlevel I-know-every-fucking-framework developer incapable of checking the real memory content of a datatype, and the real data content on the interface even if you tell them that their byte order is obviously wrong?
No, your system is not the centre of the universe and I don't care how you get your less-than-32bit-datatypes-are-for-assembler-usage-frameworks to change byteorder. It's not rocket science, if there's no ready-to-use-function then write those 4 lines yourself.
Next time I get to specify an interface I'll go for mixed-endian, just to make sure everybody involved knows the concepts of endianess afterwards.2 -

Went to a hackathon this weekend. We didn't win, but at least I can say I enjoyed working with the guys and we finished the prototype on time.
So, if you have never been in a hackathon, you should go, it's an awesome experience and even though if you don't win, you'll end up learning a lot. -
I just read about the 'Learn to Code' nonsense. It seems some journalists told coal miners to learn coding for a living. Wtf.. As a person doing formal CS education after 1 year of work, i take offense for that comment. Coding jobs are dragged to the ground by these comments which imply that coding is a no skill, for everyone job. Opinions ?3

I'm torn on dev bootcamps.
On one hand, I learn the most in hands-on direct tinkering and bootcamps tend to exude this with well-trained instructors following best practices.
On the other hand, the short timeline means corners are cut and an overwhelming amount of material is dropped all at once leading to a leaky retention vessel at the end.
I prefer ramping up learning over a period of time to gain experience than a fire hose approach.1 -

I used to hate the idea of using the terminal. This year, however, I decided to go full monty and there's no looking back. They are apparently trying to exclude Traffic from german citizens by filtering for .de domains... Because id never browse any fucking other websites! And not every german website uses .de domains.
The Government justifies this by saying ""If the calculated reference value (Amount of data collected) is increased only strongly enough, the BND (...) can monitor 100 percent of the traffic it really wants (" full take ")."

Hey everyone, just wondering how to learn about Grammar.
No I don't mean English grammar.

Feeling the need to know everything about web dev (frontend for now) already yesterday, though not having a clue, what to look at first, as it's its own universe. Everything has a million ways of implementation, combination and features worth looking at.
Already have worked with basic HTML, CSS and JS, had a short look a Typescript, being confronted with React Typescript + Redux + thunk, SASS, learned some basics of all.
Feeling lack of motivation to build smth to learn, yet I want to explore. Afraid to get stuck in tutorial hell, although I know, changing smth here and there in the projects is a must for learning. Feeling the lack of understanding the bits and pieces of what can be styled with CSS in which way. Understanding how npm, webpack, the strange parts of JS, ES6, work.

It's okay to be afraid of learning new things but this shouldn't stop you from actually learning it. Industry is fast changing and you need to evolve yourself with it.

Things I want to accomplish in 2023:
- learn rust
- learn a functional programming language (elixir probably)
- finish the O'Reilly book about microservices
- learn and contribute to gnunet
- read at least other 2 books about SE
Regarding the last point, I've always underestimated SE books.15 -
Don't automatically count yourself out of positions because you haven't done them before, you can learn and grow.
I'm in the best job that I've ever had, but didn't meet all the criteria the vacancy had as "requirements". I had some experience in some of the areas that they were looking for, none in others, but they thought I was the right person for the job. I'll always be grateful for that.
At the same time, you need to be realistic, if you've never even heard of half the things on a job vacancy then it's probably not for you. -

Dedicate some time to learning something new or pick up a new hobby! Software development may be fun, but sometimes it can be frustrating and time consuming. Take some time off to do something else as well. Maybe learn an instrument or learn how to draw. I have decided to pick up drawing and am practicing to have nice looking art (might even post in a later devWholesome post). Learning something new can broaden your interests and opportunities. And as always, make the most out of your day!4 -
Before I started working, I used to feel like I depended on documentation and the internet a little too much owing to ultra crappy long term memory. After spending some time at my internship going through code written by "professional developers" several years senior to me and trying to write unit tests for it (surprise: the code was in production without having underwent any sort of testing), I feel like the amount of time I spend online reading usage recommendations, alternates for optimisation, best practices for writing clean and descriptive code and all that is a lot more rewarding. Some bad things help you feel good about yourself.

I always refuse to read the entire documentation carefully then 2 hours later regret skimming through it coz as expected, i miss the fucking obvious and end up wasting my time. You'd think by now i would learn. It must be madness really.2

I don't try to learn new staff but to understand it. The day I need it, it would be easier to learn at that moment than learn everything I find. You can't know everything and that's ok. The important is to know what you need.

Decompile the Gmail app and check all the xml tags you might have missed.
Remember: UI and most application properties are loaded on the xml codes first (during inflation), then on activities or fragments last (especially if the views are only instantiated).

So, I was call to be phone-interviewed at a company that I kinda liked.
They were looking for a full-stack developer.
I'm more of a back-end but I'm not blind to some front-end things, but I'm not expert to any front-end framework or technology.
I'm pretty good with Java and Python, and have 8+ years of experience.
The thing is, they were looking someone like me BUT also with React and JS knowledge. So it was a bye bye for me.
That made me start thinking: Should I start learning a framework and become a full-stack developer?
Which framework would be a good one to start with?
(I've made a couple of native Android apps, and once I tried to learn React-Native but I couldn't last more than two weeks with it).7 -

I start encountering issues and it is really frustrating because one minute ago I was convinced that I knew how to do it, that I had gone through the same thing and that it would take long to solve and then I have to spend a lot of precious time on it, and then, I feel like I learned nothing :(

So... I know a very old man, that keeps a great (young) appearence despite his over 80 yo. He has been a friend of my family also and my neighbour.
He lived with his slightly younger wife. They had suns/ daughters, grandsuns and even a few grand-grand suns. Despite their family keep making visits regularly, most of the time, their main company were the neighbours. And me and my younger brother were like a second grandsuns to them, and we saw them the same way.
Every time there was somethng to fix. A radio, a tv, an old ring telephone. They would call me to fix it.
At a certain age, my parents moved out to a different street, me and my brother started spending more time away from our village, so this very lovable cuple, keept calling to my place like we were still available 24/7.
The most funny request was when the old man calls meand says something like is:
OldMan: - Hello, André! everything is good with you?
Me: - Hi. I'm great! I'm spending a lot of time away now, but despite that, all is good.
OldMan - Nice to hear you! You are still studdying Computers? I think I need you to do me a favor, if you find some time.
Me - If it's nothing too difficult, or time consuming, maybe I can. What is it?
And then he breaks it.
OldMan - I have an electronic heater, but I can 't make it run. But maybe you can fix it. You know all about this electronic stuff...
(after laughing a litle bit)
Me : Well! That is a litle bit out of my league.
BTW. A curious info. The old women couldn't recognize a single letter before her 70's. She basically didn't knew how to use a phone, but then she started a senior class to learned to read, write and basic algebra. And this would become a life saving gift to her.
One time that she injuried herself in the back caused by an hard fall at her place, she was able to drag herself to the phone, and instead of calling the Urgence Team, she called me .
Luckly I was at home, and could get help in time.1 -
Exercise more in reading your own code or looking up on Google if something doesn't work, so many times someone asks me a question and it takes me 5 seconds to see they made a stupid mistake or a typo. Then I think to myself "you could've easily found that out seriously, stop wasting my 5 seconds"

My need: I have a php code I want to put in cloud and launch as a task every N minutes automatically until I decide to stop it.
What is the best solution to do it, do you know some good services that allows me to do it easily, quickly and affordably?
For ex. "Heroku" allows me to do something like that?

Well, I'm looking to form a team of 2 - 4 members. We will be devoted to learning machine learning through books, Kaggle, self assignments and various group discussions and pair programming. We will form a group name, open a GitHub account and upload our projects there. Am looking up to extending it to build projects together. This can also help us build our portfolios.
There are no tight requirements. But some good programming skills especially in Python will be great and a good understanding of high school math. We will be learning together.3 -

This post is going to be long and it might not be the platform to ask for it's mainly for ranting yet I wanted to ask a non toxic community.
I'm mainly an ABAP programmer working on an SAP system for my living. No matter how people inside the SAP sphere look at it, it's not exactly cutting edge technology in the world of software development. (and in my opinion it's not even a knife)
As I work in an enterprise environment I have trouble about finding gaps where I can learn newer technologies and thus, I've decided to learn in my free time.
I tend to tilt toward web development as do many I know because I see potential in the GUI which HTML and CSS achieve. And I do believe that combining that with languages such as JS, Python, Ruby, Erlang and Elixir can give way to a healthy experience both in Web development and even desktop development.
In order to avoid overwhelming myself I wish to start with learning web development. Time is not of the essence because I plan to continue working with ABAP for close future, around the next 2 years, and I'm young.
I wanted to ask the community, is there any developer in here that was in the same position and can give out some pointers to the path they took? Is it wise to start my path from HTML5 and CSS3 without looking back to the older ways? Any resource you'd share will be welcomed.1 -

I received a job posting recently which has php in it, I decided to avoid it for multiple reasons, but it got me thinking: why do companies seriously believe that php is "easy to learn/use/pick up"?
