This guy at my last internship. A windows fanboy to the fucking max!
He was saying how he'd never use anything related to Linus Torvalds because he hated him for creating Linux.
Two seconds later I saw him initializing a new git repo.
I was standing there like:
*should I tell him?*

Installed Linux on an old windows laptop. This is my conversation 5 minutes ago...
Wife: "Have how you got internet?"
Me: "What do you mean, it has a wireless adapter built in?"
Wife: "But it's not Windows?"
WTF!!!
Me: "Pass my phone, this is going on devRant"
Wife: "Please no, not again"25 -
Windows: everything is proprietary and inconsistent
Mac: everything is expensive
Linux: everything is a text file12 -
First new job impression;
Me: you use Ubuntu as well? Nearly everyone does Linux here I see!
Co-worker: yup!
Me: So no windows?
CW: nahh, we want stuff that's fixable if it gets fucked. *mentions some things about windows*
Other co-worker: (obviously referring to windows) hey no swearing in here!
😄😅😆
I like it there!35 -

Call internet provider to ask about a problem :

Me: I use linux
Costumer service : I'm sorry, we don't provide support to Windows Linux16 -
Friend messaged me:
"could you install Linux onto my laptop? I'm getting really fucking tired of windows 10."
YES YES YES OF COURSE I CAN AND I WILL. EVERY DE-WINDOWS-ED PC IS ONE MORE!45 -
How to become a developer in 2016:
Step 1: Install Linux
Step 2: Brag everywhere that you've installed Linux and removed Windows
Step 3: ?????
You are now a developer19 -
So I decided to give Linux a try again.
Created live usb. Prepared myself to go through all the hassles at the beginning.
Booted in live USB. I can't see mouse cursor.
Searched in google, apparently a common problem with GTX 1070/1080 graphics cards.
Installed proprietary nvidia drivers with keyboard only. Took me about 20 minutes.
Finally managed to get the mouse cursor and install ubuntu. Time to boot and smell the fresh air of linux again.
Sound card doesn't work. Even the integrated mobo sound card doesn't work. Looked for a solution, found the bug in lunchpad but not solution yet. Everyone recommending to buy an external sound card.
I can't code without music. Decided to remove linux.
Booted back to Windows and removed linux partition. That fucked up my bootloader although I installed linux's efi loader completely separately.
Now I am sitting in front of my computer, with black grub screen, while trying to make a Windows 10 usb with my 7 years old broken laptop.
Next time I see a rant about Windows 10 that glorifies linux, I swear I'm gonna smack your face over standard TCP/IP50 -
I remember back at study I had this friend who hated windows just as much as I did.
Then, for a project, he HAD to run windows on his laptop.
He was very fucking angry about that but did this:
Installed a Linux (debian?) vm (virtualbox) on his laptop and gave it all the spare resources.
Then he ran it fullscreen.
He was still using windows technically but at boot up he booted up the Linux vm and he just worked with that one.
Teacher wasn't pleased but he couldn't do much since the fucker ran windows on his laptop as instructed xD13 -

Developers using Linux :: Make the computer work and then work.
Developers using Windows :: Make the computer work.11 -
Today I moved from Windows to Ubuntu 16.04. THIS IS THE BEST FUCKING OS IN THE WORLD. I feel I can do anything here.
Linux is freedom.31 -
My OS professor just said that next week we'll be learning about bash scripts, which is fine for me except for one simple thing. We're using Windows 10 and the instructions he provided us with confirm we'll write Windows batch scripts.
I asked him about that and he shouted at me for "thinking I'm smarter than someone with a PhD in computer science".
Also the whole semester apparentyly we won't even hear about Linux, since "only hackers and some servers use it". FML.13 -
I still remember one of my lecturer asking whole class to install Linux because ,she thinks PHP does not work on windows machine 😂😂9

Happened half a year ago (parents both use Linux although they're very a-techie).
*Dads laptop comes back from store after a repair*
Dad: (on the phone) hello son, could you help me out? they put some weird stuff on my laptop at the repair centre...
Me: Weird stuff? like what?
Dad: It's a virus I think
Me: A virus??
Dad: Definitely a virus!
Me: And what is this virus called?
Dad: Windows 10!
Me: Oh yes coming over asap to get that removed!
I put elementary OS on it again when i went to visit my parents.17 -

Mac: That's not made by Apple, fuck off.

Today at school:
We had a chemistry lesson. Somehow we came to talk about Linux...
So first our teacher said that Linux is shit.
Then another student said, Linux would be like Windows.
Teacher searched for "linux ist scheiße" (which means "linux is shit") on YouTube and let us watch a video.
He also said the whole Internet says Linux is shit and that it would never be more important then Windows.
Kill me pls😢12 -
Am I only one thinking that Linux is kind ok cliche among programmers. Some of them brag about using Ubuntu over Windows like it makes you a better programmer. I have seen brilliant Windows developers and shitty Linux developers. My point is not that Windows is better, just stop bragging that you are using Ubuntu, it does not make you smart or better than others.20
-
Some of you probably already know about this, but I figured i'd post it just in case.
Found a USB multiboot solution called Easy2Boot that supports over 300 different types of ISOs and payload files.
You could have 10 different linux live distros on the same USB or maybe a bunch of different windows installations on the same USB. The feature list is quite huge and it seems better than the other multiboot alternatives I found out there.
Happy booting9 -

Linux vs Microsoft
Well, this war is certainly one of the oldest. IMO,
Linux - great for automating stuff, free, and customisable.
Windows - user friendly, softwares much more easily available, much easier to use.
Frankly, I have tried using Linux a lot of times, but never liked it one bit. I am a GUI fan and hate to type commands for every little thing. Plus installing Ubuntu wiped out my disk once and I lost all my school memories ( this was in 2008, I didn't know much about backups, was quite young) ,so I am quite vary of it. I just don't feel it to be intuitive. Just to do a simple task, I loathe to learn difficult commands, and just read the syntax.
However, I have no bias against people who use Linux.
It is like religion, live and let live, follow whatever suits you.
On devrant, why's there so much hate for Windows? Because it is paid? Because it has updates? So what!
I never had a problem with it, I update once a month, takes 10 mins. If you set up your active hours correctly, it works great, you can disable updates also. Windows 10 is highly stable. It is paid, but in my country almost all laptops come with windows preinstalled. The OS-less laptops are about $10 cheaper, which is not that much to freak about.
Would love to hear your views and logical arguments.
Please be polite.36 -
Drawbacks of using Linux and Windows side by side?
While using Visual studio I keep typing ESC :w for saving and then on Vim I keep pressing Ctrl + s.

For being a community based around developers, the amount of people managing to fuck up Windows and then blaming the OS while both my 9 year old brother and the old next door lady keeps theirs running perfectly fine will always be a mystery to me. If you are a developer stop making excuses of how a operating system works and get clever enough to work with it instead of against it. I've been using and developing on Windows for the past 7 years and to be frank rarely do I ever encounter the shit some people post here, mind boggling I would even say pebcak. And just to be clear, I'm not a fanatic, Linux is a beautiful OS.
There I had to get that off my chest, have a nice day.13 -

Why is it that when someone mentions they really like windows or that someone should/might want to install windows, hardly anything happens (maybe some funny comments from linuxers but no hate or anything) (same goes for OSX) but when someone makes the same comment about linux, they get burned into the ground as a 'Linux nazi'? I am not only talking about devRant (it happens here sometimes as well) but also about my study and real life.
If someone would mention that it might be useful to install windows or OSX over Linux, it was all good but the FUCKING SECOND I mention it might be useful (or other linuxers) to use/install Linux, we are immediately put away as Linux nazi's.
On devRant I've tried to keep this shit to myself because I don't want to start wars but I think I am going to quit doing that and actually show my fucking opinion. Yes, that might also result in some people seeing me as a fucking linux nazi but fuck being burned into the ground every time I give my opinion regarding this.
Fucking hell. (nothing personal to any devRanters by the way but I am starting to get really tired of this shit).41 -
Recently started using Linux for software development and it is waay easier to get things done than on windows. As a beginner in CS and a total Windows person, I am beginning to really enjoy Linux. I will definitely install a dualboot on my Laptop for the new semester in school.7

Here's a fun game:
Describe an OS in four words!
Here, I'll start:
Linux Mint- Not Windows, at least.33 -
I always see these Linux vs Windows vs MacOS debates. But you guys are forgetting the most important and best OS there is!
ChromeOS.8 -
Me: I have to switch to linux, this windows sucks. *click restart
Windows: where are you going baby3 -
Dream OS :
Software and Hardware support windows level.
Updation and security Linux level
Any opinion?21 -
To all my linux peeps... and don't get on me about which OS and better and all that crap!
Anyway, until I decide on a new laptop, I am using my dad's old machine running Windows 10. I also have an old desktop with a first-gen core i3, 8gb ram, 500gb HDD. What I'd like to do is run linux on the desktop and remote into it from my laptop. Is there a good way to RDP in to linux from Windows and preserve the full experience (like RDP from Windows to Windows)?23 -
Android studio runs sooooo much better on Linux as compared to windows!!!
I just can't believe it!
My build times have been reduced by like 70% on the same laptop!
Why on earth was I even using windows all along!!7 -
Upgraded from MacBook to Razer and wanted to give windows a try but ended up installing ubuntu in less than 4 hours.
Fuck you windows.
Yours sincerely

My favourite Linux distribution is Windows, it just works and has thousand of settings available !8
-
Imagine if, when a Windows version became outdated (So anything before Windows 8, I guess), Microsoft made it available in the public domain.
We could have Windows distributions, just like Linux! Imagine how weird it would sound if you just said to your Linux-using friend, 'Oh yeah, I use arch!' and they replied 'Oh, me too! I love Arch Linux!', and you just stare at them and say:
'What's Linux? I only use Arch Windows.'
...
...
...
'Arch Windows? Are you stupid?', they would reply in utter disbelief.
We all know someone's gonna blurt out 'Yeah guys! I just downloaded Kali Windows so I could learn to hack, I don't know what you're talking about!'
Ah, good times.3 -
I like how devs keep on shitposting Windows rants, but never switch to Linux.
Windows will never get better, you have to give it up :)9 -
I've seen several posts now regarding Linux, Windows and how one of them is better.
Can we just stop?
Has nobody ever heard about dual-boot?
You can actually use both lol.18 -
When I still used swing to programm some games, I met a friend and I told him stupid because he was using linux instead of just windows, just because I didnt knew what linux actually is. He then showed me some features of linux and I said, that I'll never switch to linux because I like Win 10. After that he showed me Discord as well as telegram. And again i told him I'll never use it because I got teamspeak and whatsapp. About 1 week later I only use Discord, have a linux OS installed and using telegram (but still whatsapp).
Thanks for opening my eyes ;)8 -
Lets see what you prefer! 🤔
Linux (including mac) will +1
Windows guys will Comment
Neutral once will -15 -
If Adobe would just release their products on Linux I would literally have no reason to ever use Windows again...11

My friends trynna bullshit how windows is much better than Linux. They sayin shit like "at least our csgo don crash when we alt tab" then I say "at least I don't have to reboot when something go wrong" and they be like "yea but windows better" 😡16
-
I see so many rants on here about people getting upset with Windows and deciding to suddenly migrate to Linux. Am I the only one who slowly transitioned to Linux over the time span of serval years and just stopped using Windows because I wasn't really using it that much anymore and not because it did anything wrong?10
-
Just switched from Windows 10 to Manjaro Linux
Glad to see that I can do something (like web search) without bugs, crash, freeze and lag10 -
Yayyyy this weekend will be fucked up too started windows 10 anniversary update it fucked up my grub and linux yayyyyy need to reinstall it ohh thats why i hate windows but need to uee it on tablet with at least dualboot with ubuntu because linux is on this machine unstable so yaayyyy1

Usually I develop in python, mongo, cordova and node. Few days back I installed Windows on my laptop cause I needed to use the Visual Studio for a specific task. Then I thought that if I can setup the python, mongo, cordova and node stack on Windows then I don't need to switch between Linux and Windows frequently. And that was a horrible decision.
It took almost 8-10 hours to setup that shit, and still I couldn't make it work. There are so much complexities and those do not make any fucking sense! I mean why the hell I need to add the python path to the environment variables, and then again add the pip path separately. Then mongodb can not autostart. And finally I needed to make and build a package, and that waa the moment when I just scrapped it.
It takes me 2-3 hours to setup a fresh Linux box (which supports apt) including the OS installation. Same for the osX. I still wonder that why Microsoft does this! If Windows is for non-dev and non-tech people then why don't they release a Windows developer edition? Developing anything except ASP.NET and Java in Windows is a fucking nightmare for me!11 -
Windows 10 "update" just broke itself... I can't wait for game companies to start building more games for Linux so I don't have to spend my free time fixing my spywar... I mean operating system11

! exactly dev
I'd ditched Windows and spent a while exploring the Linux ecosystem for content creation. And I have to say, it was not a nice experience.
As much as I respect the Linux mantra of "free as in freedom" and "you need to roll up your sleeves and figure out stuff on your own", it just isn't good enough for non-dev work. Sorry guys, but I need software that gets out of my way and at least does what it's supposed to do. I can't stand a horrible UI or delays and random crashes, which is exactly what happens with most things under Linux.
To replace my Windows workflow I used the following:
1. Windows -> elementaryOS (because Debian/Ubuntu repositories seem to have the best software support, and elementaryOS is the least horrible looking thing that supports that) and then Arch, because, well, Arch.
2. Blender + Maya -> Blender + Maya on Linux.
3. Reaper + FL Studio -> Ardour + LMMS.
4. Photoshop -> GIMP + Krita + Inkscape.
5. ZBrush -> nothing :(
As you can see, my use cases are pretty much all over the spectrum.
Firstly, installing and configuring stuff. A pleasure on Windows, an absolute pain on Linux. Everything just worked on Windows, I had to wrestle with library versions and patches and unstable audio layers (Linux audio just sucks, except for JACK) on Linux.
Out of these, Blender and Maya were the best experience. But even then, both would suffer from random crashes that just didn't happen on Windows.
Ardour is actually really nice when it works. Its use of JACK for routing makes it really really flexible, but it just isn't stable enough to depend on. LMMS is utter crap. I'm sorry, but I just hate the UI. Can't stand it.
GIMP, Krita, and Inkscape can't beat Photoshop, even when you consider them together. Adobe software workflow is just so much better and more intuitive.
Blender 3D sculpting is not bad, but it's nowhere as good as ZBrush.
Also, if you're a C++ dev like me, nothing beats Visual Studio 2017. Nothing. That IDE just blows everything else out of the water. Even VSCode. And it's not slow at all, it handled a fairly large project (PBRTv3) just fine on my Windows development VM. Yes, a VM.
So...I ditched Linux and went back to Windows, but I keep Linux as a VM for when I actually want to mess with Blender or Ardour. Or some dev stuff which Windows sucks at (which is becoming less frequent because of WSL).
Out of all the above, the only one I'd consider ready for production use would be Blender. Developers of open source software, please learn from Blender. Kickass UI and user friendly operation is extremely important, you can't make a random window with GTK buttons and text boxes and arcane config files and expect people to use it for serious work.
Also, Windows beats Linux hands down as an everyday OS. It's always been rock solid, if you take care of it properly (and that goes for any OS). Updates hardly take any time because I run it on a SSD. As for all the advertising and marketing bullshit, you can block a large amount of stuff. And for what can't be blocked, well, I just have to live with it, because the alternative is compromising on my creative output, which is too much for me.
I still run Linux on my server, though. And on my embedded devices (Pi, BeagleBone, etc.). It absolutely rocks there.
I realize that Linux software is not going to improve unless we do something about it, so I'll be contributing fixes and code (the joys of being a C++ dev, yay). Still, I feel that the platform and software as a whole is just not mature enough.18 -
Windows:
When things go wrong, they fix themselves.
Linux:
When things go wrong, it's easy to fix them yourself and make sure they don't happen again.
Mac:
Things usually don't go wrong... but when they do, you're screwed 😲4 -
Here's one that involves Windows, Linux (at the same time!), WInZip, Python, Lua and Minecraft, sort of.
So, when I get depressed I often find that old 2011 Minecraft videos help a lot from the nostalgia boost. If its stupid, but it works, it isn't stupid. Anyways, I was thinking about how much fun it must have been to just fuck around with code and make something like Minecraft. Naturally, I got a huge code boner and really wanted to do something I hadn't in a while: binding c to a higher level language.
This time around, I wanted to try Python. C + Python seems like a good pair. I watched a tutorial and it seemed pretty interesting and simple enough but I remembered that I actually like Lua a lot better than Python, so I went to the download page of Lua.
The download is a tar.gz so I let out a sigh and start typing "WinZip" into google. But no, fuck that, I hate 3rd party decompression programs on Windows. They all just give me this eerie feeling.
"This would be so much fucking easier on Linux"...
I remember that I haven't tried the Windows Subsystem for Linux. I guess it's time, isn't it?
I read the docs of how to do it. Nice little touch, they tell you how to enable WSL from PowerShell but don't mention the GUI way to do it. It's genuinely a nice touch.
So I get everything installed and go to the app store to choose a distro. I want Ubuntu. I click the Install button...
...
... "Something unexpected happened"
Windows and their fucking useless error messages. Jesus, okay. I restart computer. Same issue. I update Windows. Same thing. Uninstall WSL. Reboot. Install WSL. Reboot. Same thing. HOLY SHIT.
Went to bed. Woke up. Tried to install Ubuntu.
"Yea ok lul i'll work this time for no reason"
Finally unzipped Lua.4 -
I use Windows at home. Linux at work.
The last couple of days I was "forced" to work in Windows due to the need of Microsoft Word for documentation.
I just noticed today, that when I rebooted and entered Gnome shell again, it felt like coming home.
:)6 -
There is this group called LUKI e. V. that advertises using linux at church instead of windows. First of all, I think it is a horrible idea because the people working at the church, based on my personal experience, can barely operate windows. Windows is just the better and easier to use option for people who don't know much about computers.
Also, and this is where it gets hilarious, their main argument for switching to linux is that it is a "fair" software (as in fair trade). How? I don't think Microsoft devs are underpaid child slaves. And even if so, how would you change that with a software alternative that doesn't cost anything?9 -
I booted up windows yesterday night to play some games which is weird for me since I am almost never in the mood
It had to update for like four hours automatically without asking me first so I leave it on and just go to bed
Next day, not really in the mood to play games, as usual
I go to restart into superior distro: Linux
Computer reboots into windows
Try again: fucking windows
Another: malware fills my screen once again
This fucking ass clown overwrote grub
This fucking piece of shit malware deleted my fancy dual boot screen and had the balls to casually say "Hi" while it did it
I then remembered my laptop doesn't have a keyboard combination to select what to boot from. I have to fucking boot my laptop by pressing a pinhole on the side so I can select linux.
Fuck Lenovo with their shitty button and fuck Windows
On the bright side, I guess if anyone steals the laptop they'll never know I have a second OS on it. -
A new developer friend was to start using linux and to remove the part where I should explain sudo, I did this in his terminal
alias doitanyway=sudo
and told him that if anything is not working tell it to doitanyway and he deleted his windows in just two days 😂😂😂5 -
I hate people who dog on wsl
Windows subsystem Linux
I use it. It has been wonderful. No problems that Google couldn't fix. Always a patch or an update.
And I can use Windows just fine.
No dual boot needed, no bullshit wine needed, no having to do without Photoshop
There,.. I'm out of the closet
My uncle showed me how to use it ok mom and dad
I'm starting a wsl parade who's in10 -
I had to use windows the other day and completely forgot how to do basic tasks.... Back to Linux for me.
Also... Windows has gotten so freaking restrictive since the last time I used it as my main. (Win7)4 -
Enough!!
There is to much hate in the world already without hating on Windows because you are a Linux user, or vice Versa.
All I'm reading is windows is shit! Linux is for supreme devs.
More to life than hate! Respect each other's skills. Skills are like race all are unique and no one race is superior and don't discriminate because of skills.31 -
I have been using Linux based system from so long but last week I was building outlook add-on using Visual studio. It was a nightmare to work on visual studio(Or any IDE in Windows) after working for a long time on Linux/UNIX based systems. So much of mouse clicks, worst console experience, etc. Windows is definitely not for developers.11
-
Whoever said that Linux "just works" obviously never had to use 5GHz wi-fi. I can't even 'make' the kernel module. And last official driver only supports kernel <=3.12. I guess I will have to use Windows ):14

That moment when u buy an extra SSD so you can have windows to play some random MMOs with your friends and that bitch tries to sneak your Linux's boot priority.
No Windows, u're just here to play some games. No u can't boot everytime. Only linux can do that. Thank's but I don't even want a browser on you, I already have all the .exe files I need.2 -
Windows crashed and now it gets stuck on this screen
Linux has low disk space and it can't access Windows drive partition for some reason..
What do I do now? :/27 -
There is this around 50 yo guy who seriously said in a room full of linuxers "oh, I'm already over with that Linux thing, it's for children. I'm using Windows now."

Sad story of how software die 👻!
When do you call a technology obsolete 👴?

how about that Linux coming to Windows business? i know normal people couldn't give a shit. what about you guys? +1 if you think it's awesome, comment why if you think it's bad.12

Want to switch to Linux so bad right now. Getting tired of Windows and its shit. It took 12 minutes just to shut down!!! I'm just holding back until I finish this project I'm working on for Uni so I don't mess things up. After that it's goodbye Windows!
What distro should I try first? ;)22 -
Ended up following up on my previous rant and wiped my Windows laptop for Manjaro Linux. Already loving it, 💯% a good decision.1

Installing Linux (Ubuntu) for the first time from Windows. Any tips/tricks I could use to get used to my new environment?29

Everytime I boot into windows soemthing goes wrong. Driver that doesn't load properly, loss of connection on a fucking RJ45 cable, boot process that locks the desktop for about 5mns randomly... What the hell!?!??! I just don't get any of this crap on Linux. And also, how the fuck is Microsoft expecting to draw the Linux crowed to them by putting linux on top of their massive steaming pile of plague ridden shite?!? Linux works very well without that stink! F.U. Microsoft! and F.U. to your imbred, affront-to-nature, colossal putrifying piece of gelatinous diarrhetic shite of an OS!

How I think the process for designing a hardware-driver is like
CEO: "Alright everyone, we have designed and created this great product, now let's write a driver for it!"
PM: "Great then! We just code for Windows, create an eye-catching UI but leave the actual at the worst possible case that could work!"
Dev: "B-But isn't there other OSes, like Linux and Android that people use on their computers too?"
PM: "Shut up! We are going to JUST support Windows and f*** no absolutely other OSes!
Dev: "But what if they are also developers, and want to control and use this great product by programming it themselves? We should make the driver open-source, or at least give them some APIs!"
PM: "Nonsense! They are only going to use this product on M$ Windows, and with the program we provide to them, even if it's crappy and crashes most of the time!"
Dev: "But-but..."
PM: "No buts! That's our final decision!"
And some other consumer devs are like, "F*** it, we just reverse-engineer the codes and write a new driver ourselves!"

I love how my University CSSE courses make it hard for Windows users.
Student: Is it possible use VALGRIND in Windows CMD?
prof: I don't know, I only use Linux command line. Next question.
All programs must compile and run on Linux using g++. So everyone using windows has strip the IDE bloat and transfer the project files over to the remote Linux lab every single time they compile and run.
Benefits of being a Linux user!5 -
I am .net developer which doesn't work with .net core(yet) and obviously i have windows as work os, while at home elementary OS is my main(again dual booting win10). I don't get why so many linux/windows rants are around. Get best of both worlds. I personally constantly need both and each are very different and better at handling different stuff, so why don't you (fanboys) stop it :)3

I wonder so many devs hate Windows then why dont we stop creating products for it and start migrating all major projects (like games and software) to linux.7

Woke up telling myself I should make a build for my game to see how it perform (didn't do a single one in several months). Was expecting some issues like always. But everything built on first try, on Windows and Linux (which is a fist attempt for the later).
So yea, today has been a good day 😎 -
Finally left windows completely for Linux. Currently running elementary OS and it is the best choice I ever made7
-
Took the weekend to finish my phase out of Windows on my desktop and laptop.
Finally going Linux full time!
Goodbye constant forced reboots, awful updates, and lost files!5 -
Im gonna commit a cardinal sin here, but i like windows. It's maybe not as flexible as linux, but dammit i do not have the time to meddle with my os all day.12
-
Ok, so many people rant about windows update. It can fuck up things, starts unexpectedly (after 100 warnings and messages letting you choose when but ok) and it takes too long to update.
I use Windows daily so I update regularly and never takes more than 5 mins. 20 when its a major update twice a year. So let's talk about Linux.
Yesterday I wanted to try out .net core on Linux so I booted my antergos vm to do it. TLDR: Didn't do shut because, surprise, Linux updates.
So apparently I downloaded the wrong version of visual studio code. Uninstall and install the right one then. Nope, can't do that. Some dependency must be updated. That dependency is on the highest version on the AUR, I have to get a different one. Ok, no problem. But I can install the other because uninstalling the original breaks more dependencies. Well fuck then.
So I decided I'd do a full system update with pacman, shouldn't take long. 1.6gb worth of update. I have 200mb download so it should be fast right? Well, I had to wait a couple of hours.
So I couldn't do anything on my afternoon because of Linux updates. That's an original rant isn't it?
And before the comments get here, yeah I know it's arch, it's difficult and all that. This isn't about being hard to do. It's just annoying and making me lose time.3 -
PCs are a clusterfuck these days. Microsoft has abandoned the niceness of Win-7 and opted for Win-10 - with spyware, untested forced updates and forced online licence checks to make sure you have to get the shit. Macs are total crap, and Apple doesn't care because they instead prefer to milk customers with overpriced iShit. Linux sucks and looks like a Soviet tractor, but at least, it doesn't fuck up itself just by switching it on.
I had Linux as only OS from 2001 to 2010, and while I obviously can deal with it, I finally hated it enough to switch over to Win-7. From 2020 on, it looks like I will be back because Microsoft has managed to fuck up Windows even worse (and then these suckers wonder why Github users don't trust them). Maybe I'll buy a Tux when I install Linux so that I can punch it in the face.
Progress was yesterday - today it's about damage control. Welcome to a world where the brightest CS guys are thinking about how not only to shove up even more ads into peoples' asses, but how to also transmit lab data of the poo.7 -
What happens to someone who talks 2 hours about Windows and Linux?
He suddenly talks about Winux 😂

Windows is when your computer just exits it's life via fucken BSOD.
But then there's linux. Half-freezing up, making you switch to tty2 just to see via htop, the machine is essentially idle. Nice. Fuck you.8 -
My friend who constantly keeps messaging me to switch to windows:
WINDOWS GRAPHICS IS BETTER THAN UR LOONIX HEHEHE FUCC UR OPINION LMAO
le me: can ssh to my linux machine from anywhere and it can handle over 1000 users simultaneously and if one Xorg client on the main machine dies, we can just close it and open another. while their windows' whole graphics crashes if there's too much load on their graphics. We even played minecraft on the main machine lol, while other devs were connected to it.12 -
I use Mac in office for daily dev and tasks, and a Lubuntu laptop for Linux related jobs. My home PC runs Ubuntu. And my personal laptop has a Ubuntu-Windows dual boot. I haven't used the Windows for more than a year. Even I do most of the basic tasks in Terminal, both in Mac and Linux.
Now I need to install a custom ROM in my Android Snapdragon based phone. And all the tools I need runs in Windows only. I don't even want to open that boot partition. 😥
Any help on this? It would be better if I can get something which runs on Linux.15 -
Moving from Windows to Linux. Painful but happy. Need to see what to keep and what not. I hope my Kaspersky will run on Linux6

My cycle : windows - ubuntu - mint - fedora - elementary - kubuntu - apricity os - debian - windows.
Why? Because that damn linux has fucking problem with hybrid intel/amd gpus13 -

Windows user(non-coder): Linux? The boring dull look, which does nothing!
Me: why do you use Windows?
User: looks amazing, and specially for games:)
Me: yeah, Somebody who was in love with Linux created that damn game!8 -

I currently have a PC with Windows 10 and I am thinking of switching to Linux. I am very new to stuff like that. Any suggestions or tips??21 -
[serious] I'm a Windows guy. Been so my whole life. devRant community, I'd like to start playing around with Linux. As someone who has never done that before, where should I start? We're talking total noob. Thanks in advance.8

Yesterday I reinstalled my system because I wanted to have linux on my ssd and windows on my hdd. So after 2 retries because first windows was bitching about the drive format even after I set the correct one and the second time I installed linux and windows broke. Now finally everything is back to normal and I can start coding. One thing suprised me (badly) windows is super slow now. Luckilly linux is the opposite. I love linux.4
-
I see a lot of rants about Linux dual boot with Windows and Windows update fucks up grub. So I bought a new ssd and reinstalled Linux, but damn.. its always a lot of work to make everything work again. Every time I still learn new things and I don't have to be afraid anymore after Windows update
-
To be fair I'm actually grateful for Windows 10! If it had never frustrated me the way it did I wouldn't have seriously tried out any linux distro as a daily driver 😂1

OS surgical operations allowances...
Linux allows most of the manipulations, windows allows some while Mac didn't.... Feeling awesome with Linux.... Try yourself..!8 -
I used to think 30 minutes for an update ain't that bad, then I switched to Linux. pacman -Syu and you're done.
Now I'm using windows again due to PUBG and damn this feels like an eternity.10 -
Okay so I have a question about Windows Linux Subsystem and idk where else to ask this.
So should I think of it as a virtual machine except instead of being a completely separate environment it’s my current computers environment?
I don’t know how to word this how I’m thinking about it but I’m trying to figure it out.
Also do Bash scripts work with it? I assume they do but it’s just a double check.19 -
Using Linux way back at school on a personal laptop.
Another student approach me and says:
- I like that skin what kind of skin (theme) has your windows machine?.
I replied:
- is Linux not windows is another operating system is my world2 -
When you go to Windows from Linux after long time and Windows fucks you up by its freaking updates. The whole time waiting, I felt Windows was indirectly saying, "You left me for someone else and now you want me back? Suffer bitch!4
-
So what say guys, switch to linux forever, and bye bye windows?.
Or is there anything i should know before i do this?.
Things i cannot do in linux?
Googled a lot, still confused.Help?
(Using Arch, seems all fine)19 -
-Writes a small python script on windows
-This should work without a hitch
-Throws more errors than there is tangible numbers in the universe
-Spend an hour trying to fix it
-Give up, copy and paste the code into linux line for line
-Works immediately

Since the last Windows Update broke my wife's laptop (the WiFi driver doesn't woro anymore) she's moving to Linux. I hope it goes well since she is a non-techi. I kinda am excited.
The biggest problem will be the lack of Adobe Illustrator. 😕14 -
So I work in company which enforces Windows machine only. God I'm dying for Linux. They have this antivirus to monitor every activity we all do. Please let me know if I can install Linux without letting them know.19
-
One of my coworker is shifting from Linux to Windows because he couldn't setup the machine for NodeJS and ROR development.
Is it a good time to leave the company?14 -
I am so freaking behind. Just found out today, my dual boot Linux distro was basically a waste of time, because of "Bash on Ubuntu On Windows". Can't wait till I get this thing setup to my liking, and we'll see if it can replace a full distro. (For once not a post bashing Windows 10 lol)7
-
I'm not one of those "windows sucks lol" guys, but I got used to having my dev environment set on Linux and due to some technical problems I'm setting things up on Windows for a while (dual boot).
Now... Jesus CHRIST how annoying this is. First, I use Laravel and the whole documentation assumes you're either using Mac or Linux. Second, everything has to be added to the god-damned PATH. Third, Windows sole purpose now seems to be updating the PC (and hogging my bandwidth in the process) so I had to waste time taming the beast called Windows Update.
Again, not the stupid old Linux vs Windows thing. I use both for different things, but had never set up a dev environment on Windows.14 -
That moment you are forced to use Windows to develop PHP Stuff and arent allowed to install Linux because of "Company Regulations" (aka Windows only Admins) ...
I just want my beloved Linux Dev Stack here :(4 -
I know, many devs swear on using *NIX based OSes or macOS but really... Windows 10 is very good, never had a single issue or BSOD. If u have issues regarding update reboots then just disable automatic reboots, damn! One single " fuck Windows, killed my workflow cause of updates. Installing Linux know cause I'm too dumb to change a simple setting." >_> and I can play ALL my games... NATIVE!10
-
Time to leave windows for good. PC crashed after update...after 48 good hours hours of trying to repair and uninstall updates which failed terribly, I've come to the inevitable decision.
Linux here I come.
Any suggestions on which distro I should go with?20 -
How long is your operation system running?
Linux - since the first kernel release I've ever touched.
Windows - depends on the update cycle, mostly 2 weeks up to 6 month.
And there goes another night with reconfiguring my windows session 🤬.7 -
I soo want to use Linux (maybe Arch) on my main desktop but I got some programs like FL Studio which only run on Windows.
A Windows VM feels so not snappy :(7 -
It's fucking sad that when you buy a new laptop with good specs, good nvidia graphics, good sound and install Arch Linux because you hate fucking windows and arch way is the right way. But, then Linux fucks you because there is no proper nvidia support and you have to use wine which doesn't support new games and you run frequently into problems like audio (P.s. maybe in linux 4.10.11). You have to configure microphone everytime while using Skype and see some other guy having same laptop playing happily latest games without much burden.😣😣😥😥😔😔
When will Linux kernel be amazing for gaming??14 -

the amount of time you spend trying to unfuck shit you don't understand while using linux is highly unpleasant
i'm even on ubuntu which should is supposed to be a friendly babbies first linux option
dumbass shit with the desktop environment being borked such that i had to stop using cinnamon and grub boot issues because of dual booting windows 10 on the same drive
something that just werks, can play games, codemonkey, wageslave and isn't windows could be nice (macos fuck off, you don't satisfy the critieria eitehr)4 -
I have to say that I'm a little pissed by all this windows bashing... Can't understand all that Linux is the only OS you should use...
Have you ever tried to Programm C# without windows?!? It's really quirky and shitty if you can't use Visual Studio.
Have you ever tried to do something according to sound and producing... So you probably known something about Logic and for this case MacOS seems to be best.
I think Windows improved a lot over the time and they have done some nice things with the "new" powershell.
Don't get me wrong Linux is quite nice and you can get distros for nearly every use case but if you want your software to run by most of the people with a computer you have to develop for windows...16 -
When Windows tells me I require permission from my own user account to delete or modify contents of a folder...
...makes me wish I still used Linux...
...but many of my favorite PC games don't work with Wine...
...so I guess I just have to suck it up and reboot my damn computer so I can delete this folder. 😡3 -

How to switch from linux to windows?
There is a lot of discussion online how to switch in a opposite way, but none on my case. As I am switching jobs, I will have to work using a windows machine. Any tips on how to feel more at home?5 -
Need a advice.
Have been a Windows user since many years. But at college I do use ubuntu and am familiar with it. So now I have developed interest in using Linux due to its simplicity and ease of use.
But for some tasks I still need Windows. So thinking to Dual boot my laptop. Have heard dual boot harms the laptop, makes it slow, blah blah.
So Is it advisable to Dualboot on a same machine?
My config:-
intel core i5 7th gen; 8 gb ram, 1 tb HDD,. 2gb AMD R5.10 -
So a lot of people tell me Linux is way better than Windows. And I know it's all personal preference but I was thinking about switching to linux. What's everybodies opinion?16

Ubuntu > Open Terminal Here
Windows >
> open cmd,
> copy folder add
> paste with cd
Linux is Still better :D12 -
hmmm more rants about Linux than about Windows?
Actually analysing better, most of "rants" about Linux are actually expressions of love.
I can't find however any expression of love for Windows.
So the question remains open6 -
Been using linux for too long I forgot my windows password... I don't fucking forget password! Maybe this is a sign I should get rid of windows entirely 🚶🚶7

So, started working in a nodejs/react personal project with an old friend. I code in linux mint, my pal always at windows 7 never worked in something different from php. From the very beginning I advised him to move to linux
Me: hey man, the backend is running now, pull the changes and `npm start`
Friend: ok so I need to install dependencies right?
Me: yup, easy peasy lemon squeezy
So after a brief(one week period) until my friend could install visual studio to get some deps installed
Friend: hey I ran `npm start`, it got stuck. backend does not start at all, no output messages, no error, no nothing
Me: FFS, that's why I told you from the start, "use any linux distro for this project" :(
Then for a couple of hours(4) trying to install a distro in his 7 years old laptop...
Me: Ok, let's call it a day, 7 tries to install this thing in your old machine is enough. did you not realize your HDD was really busted? in your 7 years with your laptop? this is BS that's why I could not install linux :|
Friend: I didn't, windows never showed me any problem, maybe windows is better than linux in that matter.
Me: GTFO6 -
Am i the only one who can't use the Windows command prompt after i recently learned how to use the Linux terminal?
Heck. I can't even navigate properly in the cmd prompt and when a command fails i forget i use Windows and puts 'sudo' before the command even though it's godamn Windows.
Guess i have gotten too used to Linux.3 -
There's been quite a commotion about Microsoft joining the Linux Foundation, and if you didn't think things could get any stranger, well, it is. Windows 10 Creators Edition will merge Windows 10 and Ubuntu 16.04. That's what you get for eating mushrooms.14

Caught up enjoying myself last few months , of using Linux (Ubuntu) O.S
Now, I won't be switching back to Windows ,
I mean who will not enjoy an open source O.P that doesn't generally need a machine reboot and isn't vulnerable to malware , viruses8 -
tl;dr Why Linux?
So yeah, another Linux question. I love C# and been doing some WPF and Xamarin stuff and planning to learn ASP.NET, but why do I hear that Linux is better than Windows for web dev. Why should I learn it especially if I want to specialize in .Net? Sorry just a student and I heard Microsoft is bringing a lot of Linux goodness to Windows and I wonder why.13 -
LINUX. I'm sure everyone heard this term. But I still don't know why do people want to give up their life and try this piece of crap. I know many of you might be offended, but, to hell with that. When I heard about the Linux, and everyone was praising it about it, I thought that I should give it a try. So, I installed Ubuntu (obviously, because I was a beginner) and the installation failed. I thought that I've made some mistake. Tried again, FAILED. So, I waited for next version. After downloading and trying to installing it, Voila. I installed it. Then comes the part when I actually started using it, for as simple as watching a video. I didn't play. It gave an error of some codec was missing. I installed the codec and then I payed the video successfully. Then, I want to install the Oracle Java Development Kit, and literally it was a pain to install. It took me half an hour to install and configure it. Then after using it for a couple of days, I found that my WiFi was acting weird. I booted up my Windows just to check it and it worked perfectly on windows. Then why the heck was it not working on Ubuntu. Don't know. On searching about it, I found that my WiFi adapter's driver was having some issues. Then after using it for more days, something very weird happens, the Ubuntu booted but with terminal only. No GUI, No Unity, nothing. I against searched for it, found some commands, ran it and it started normally. So, the point that I'm trying to make is that even for simple and basic tasks, I always have to search about it every time to get it working. I mean if their are so many steps to be taken for every simple task then why people keep on recommending it. With the Linux installed, I was very much distracted from my primary work. Instead of doing my work I was searching for installing JDK. I mean wtf. In Mac or Windows its as simple as downloading the file, installing it and you're done. But in Linux I don't know. And the whole Linux community thinks that Windows sucks. I mean on windows I was more relaxed and more focused on my work. Whenever we search for the Linux, many people say that Android is a Linux. I get it, but in Android, many developers have worked very hard to make it as what it is nowadays. But what about Ubuntu, Fedora or any other distribution. I haven't seen any distribution which makes me feel that I wanna use it again. None of them. So, Linux is not a great OS according to my experience12
-
Why did people upgrade to windows 10 its such a piece of shit, sticking to windows 7 then if i feel like i need to on linux it is.3
-
To everyone on here thinking about switching to Linux: don't be afraid. I dual-booted it with windows when I was 12 without any help, without any problems occurring during the installation whatsoever. As long as you know what you're doing and you do research, you'll be fine.3

Got a new gaming laptop a couple weeks ago.
Was using Manjaro on my previous laptop and it gave me headaches. Random freezing, random shutdowns, etc. I tried several distros but every time I got frustrated. I guess that laptop didn't support Linux distros very well.

I guess I'll stick with Windows.4 -

I just got an old refurb for the garage to run my camera capture stuff, as the raspberry pi wasn't cutting it. I thought for a split second about leaving the legit version of Windows 10 that came with it on it, and trying to do some in-home streaming over steam, but I found out very quickly that an old corporate refurb is not going to cut it for game streaming. And with all the complete nonsense you have to abide to make Windows usable(ie: disabling stuff you don't want), it's not going to be any use to me in Windows if it can't stream.
Also, for some reason, Windows just wouldn't use the built-in NIC at all. It reported the cable was unplugged, and just absolutely would not work. So, Debian it is, and lo and behold! The NIC works like a champ now. The camera capture works brilliantly too, so now I can turn off my desktop at night.
Linux just works. Windows, more and more all the time, is just more trouble than it's worth.2 -
"It takes A and B and C and X and ... to make this work on Windows"
What? Nooo really? Making Linux tools work on Windows takes more effort than on Linux? And it must totally be Windows' fault, right?
Pull your head out of the ass already. Running Windows tools on Linux takes just as much effort and just as many extra steps, and the same goes whenever you try to run any software on a system it wasn't made for.18 -
Bought myself a new graphics card as my old one died. After i got my system runnning again ( Linux Mint 17), by fixing the video drivers i concluded that i may want to get into gaming again.
I have a free Windows 10 Pro licence lying around so lets try to get dual boot running.
Hmm seems like i cant install windows after linux without installing grub2 again through a recovery disc. Well okay wanted to try out mint 19 anyway.
Downloaded both Isos. Linux mint is 1,5Gb and Windows 10 is 4,3Gb. MS what are you doing ?!
Only have a 4GB USB-Drive and dont want to buy a new one. GOD FUCKING DAMNIT MICROSOFT.
So at a forum i found a software to remove packages from windows isos and now i'm sitting here removing windows bloatware for 4 FUCKING HOURS, JUST TO INSTALL WINDOWS.
Ofc that tool was only windows specific so i had to install windows in a vm first.
Fucking tired of this shit.3 -

Hey fellas, I have a question about Windows and Linux.
I love Ubuntu on my Laptop and since gaming is no prio at this time I'd like to install Linux on my Rig.
I want to install Linux on a separate drive and unplug my Windows drive so Linux can boot alone without selection at Bootmanager.
However, I'd like the possibility that Bootmanager will let me choose if I plug the Windows drive back in (just in case I'm really in need of Windows).
Is it possible?5 -
How to install windows, when there is no network boot support, no USB and you are on Linux?
I did it through vmware, just ran using the current hdd.2 -
I'm really in love with Linux, I use it for work and programming. But at Home I still have a Windows Desktop PC. But All the Windows Updates in the past days (and even today) and the other Shit the Shit Windows has, I want to Switch to Linux even for my Home pc. I think for the first time I'll install it on a separate disk.
I want to try some new Linux Distribution. How about elementary os? I Like the design, its really attractive.
Thank you for Sharing your opinion with me :)4 -
Can't decide whether or not I should transition to Linux, yeah windows can be very difficult at times but I'm so used to the ecosystem and like it's kinda hard moving to only Linux, I've tried Mint, Ubuntu, Fedora they were nice but nothing matched Windows 10 support for software4

Yesterday I have to do something I never thought I'd need to. A little background: I dislike PHP and MS SQL Server; however, they pay the bills.
So yesterday in order to get work done I had to install in my Linux machine a Windows 7 VirtualBox with SQL Server on it and had to compile the php mssql modules by hand and... everything worked flawlessly. It was pretty awesome.
Kudos to VirtualBox and the team behind the open source php mssql modules.4 -
Since Ihave been using Linux at work I am getting kind of sick of my Windows 7 at home.. guess I am finally going to have to set up Linux. I feel like thats going to be a headache4

Spreading happiness by introducing linux in my friend's laptop . This was the same guy , who told that linux could never match Windows and stuff . but within minutes of installation , he is shocked by the power and ease of the command line .
P.S. I am not mentioning the distro here .. as it will attract a lot of hatred . !!!6 -
Webex works great in firefox on linux now. That was the last thing I was using windows to do. So my siloed-off VM for webex can run linux now, and people will ask me WTF operating system I'm using when I share my screen.

Why is Ruby on Rails such pain in the ass on Windows? A college of mine uses Windows for our project, since I use Linux I rarely get any errors :)2

Finally did it!
Replaced my desktop pc (which I use for gaming) which had Windows 7 with Arch Linux! It was not hard because I already use it on my laptop.
OK it was a bit struggle with nvidia and cinnamon due to missing libraries I had to install which I don't know before.
But it is possible to play games on Arch?
Yes definitely!
CS:GO - works (native, steam)
League of Legends - works (wine)
World of Tanks - works (wine)
All I need is working (:2 -
Shall I completely switch to linux???
Can i find drivers for graphic drawing tablet and awesome download manager????
Those two have been keeping me in windows for years...8 -
Getting a Raspberry Pi to play with, which I imagine will please those of you who want me to get more into Linux. :-)
A question..
Can anyone recommend a good Raspberry Pi 4 Emulator that works in Windows 10, so I can practice doing stuff there, before trying to break a real one. :-)

tldr := Windows 10...
So I had Windows 8.1 / Linux dual boot system. And decided that, what the heck, I'll try upgrading to WinX. That went well. Surprisingly. I even used WinX for a while. Windows 10 and linux side by side, on the same disk, just different partitions. And since everything was so nice, I've decided to let Windows install some updates. After reboot, uefi linux entry is gone. What? How? Well, after update windows found 'unrecognized' partition, and, since it is urecognized, it must be unused. So it helpfully fucked it up. That was linux uefi partition (yes, I kept them separate).
Long story short, windows8.1 back from original image, side by side with linux. Lesson learned, gonna ispect each windows update twice before installing. And not gonna touch WX even with a 10-foot stick!1 -
Does anyone know if it's possible to install a VM (Linux or Windows) on a Linux Server without GUI and then connect to the aforementioned VM via Remote Desktop? If yes, has anyone done it before?4
-
One of the top reasons why I hate windows is because updates are taking soooo much time. I mean when I install a greater update on Linux e.g. Linux mint 18.2 to 18.3 it takes 1 reboot and about ten minutes of installing... When I install any windows update I have a 50% chance that Microsoft decides that it is a update which requires a restart which means in reality that my pc restarts about 3 times and takes at least 30 minutes for updating. WTF1

Even Plop Manager won't let me boot from USB. I have no CDROM with enough space to get.... Linux mint. I am stuck with Windows. Happy holidays !1

I've been a windows user for a long time now, but I've been thinking of trying out Linux sometime soon. Which distro should I start with? And can I still play steam/origin games? I might also use a VM to see how I like it before I move over.
I'm sure I could google this, but a lot of you seem to use Linux, and this isn't stack overflow so I'm not expecting too many people to shit on me for asking 🙂5 -
Ok, so here is the thing:
After a very long WINDOWS UPDATE
the sound has gone. No speakers or headphones working. After wasting >10 hours (not in a row)
trying to find the FINAL SOLUTION, I have just gave up. Bought a working external sound card, but I could only use headphones plugged into it.
In a week, I booted Linux (cos I have never really
used it and not with the sound problem in mind) and guess what - on Linux sound works normally! On THE SAME LAPTOP!!!
I belive the update somehow harmed the audio drivers. I'm really fed up with it.9 -
So there I have a laptop in dual boot efi that starts directly to mint and has Windows as secondary os. As much as i appreciate mint for being Linux, I cannot really understand why does my laptop last twice as much on Windows on moderate saving settings, regardless of what I'm doing. Colleague who talked me into mint told me it would shorten battery life only by a slight bit. Can anyone tell me how is that possible or how to improve mints battery life?4

My windows 8.1 computer broke a few years ago, a few months ago, I dug it up and installed Damn Small Linux, after that, Ubuntu. Now, I have Tiny7 (Modded windows 7 designed to be non resource intensive. Basically the Damn Small Linux of the Windows world.) I'll say it now, after Windows XP, Windows 7 is probably the best operating system I've ever had the pleasure of using.

I'm currently using both kali Linux and Ubuntu on my vmware running a windows 10 OS also using about 5 different android emulators....... is there any way I might be risking my HDD.....making it crash some day????
So confused11 -
Trying to find a linux distro I like to replace Windows on my home pc... Didn't like the first 3 I tried, so I'm continuing to try others...but now it feels more like I'm trying to kill Windows
ಠ_ಠ14 -
My PC kept booting into linux cause i installed two OS's on my HDD. Long story short, had to remove the Linux (it was Kali) and i didnt know how. And so started the longest few hours of my life.
I deleted the linux partition feeling like some genius that could speak to computers. To my suprise the computer didnt speak back, i restarted it and the GRUB bootloader had this sheepish grin on its face like as if it was saying, "Not sure who's been speaking to you all this time, but i bet you can hear me now, hehehe". I went down the rabbit hole that we all know and love called the google search bar.
My computer could no longer boot into windows, and i started to question my very existence on this earth. Hours of using our modern day saviour, google of alphabet inc, i came to an eventual conclusion. Grabbed a 4GB flash, made it into a bootable device and said good riddance to bad rubbish.5 -
Is it me only having to deal with horrible meeting product?
Arch Linux as my base OS, justifies my all-time updated system, NPAPI being deprecated in Firefox, Chrome and have to use Cisco WebEx every Saturdays and Sundays.
Just hate having to return to Windows to make WebEx chrome extension work for the meeting to be possible, and then a CentOS VM running for all the demonstration, explanation and teaching...
Although, IcedTea in Linux makes it possible but oh well it WebEx is still a horrible headache.1 -
I've been trying to find a linux distro/de that "just works" for like a week and honestly, I'm kinda giving up and going back to Windows.
Everyone single one I've tried had some weird quirks, mostly audio and video related. Screen tearing everywhere, mic not working, distorted audio, jittery animations and very low responsiveness.
I really wanted to use Linux as my main OS, at least for work. I love the simplicity of package managers and the terminal. But honestly, I don't understand how something like that could be depicted as better than Windows. I'm sorry but Windows runs waaaaaaaay better on my desktop and PC it blows linux out of the water. Zero issues with drivers, no screen tearing, no distorted audio flying smooth animations and responsiveness.
I'm very disappointed, I was expecting Linux to be quicker and less bloated but god those hardware compatability issues just destroy everything good that linux has to offer.
Guess I'm going to install some background VM since I only really need to run terminal stuff and daemons for work.28 -
Decided to try Windows Subsystem for Linux instead of running a Linux VM instead. It works so far except installing stuff like sshuttle. So many errors man...

If only windows had Linux like bash, it would be awesome.
Windows 10 is amazing, yet I miss the beloved Oh My ZSH7 -
So I was out at night with some friends and one of them mentioned her fast ultrabook got slower with the windows updates (Win8->Win8.1). I asked what was her daily tasks to get a base usage.
Me: maybe you should try Linux.
Her: oh yeah, I've heard of that.4 -
I'm so fucking done 😔
consoleapi on windows and control codes + termios on linux
But what about ansi terminals on windows :(
I can't find a good way to interface with them, termios obviously won't work
My brain hurts so much but I cannot have another failed project. Fucking obsolete bodged together amateur software 😔14 -
Are there any risk in running Duel Boot (Windows 7 & Ubuntu) at the same time? Are there good tutorial you can provide? I wanna be linux guy. Kinda confused!8

I can't decide if I want to buy a macbook or a good quality windows laptop and run linux on it. My current laptop is way too old and slow so I need to buy a new one. Macbooks are way too overpriced with their €1500 imo and was more thinking of a €1000 budget. I mostly develop in Java and Python (and a lot of web development). What would you guys recommend?11

Tested the windows linux subsystem. Thought windows did something good by implementing a complete Linux bash. Then I recognized that they just piped it into the win kernel. Lol they broke it again XD
Next steps are removing windows, burn that m2 ssd in some gasoline, throw the ashes in a deep hole next to my old bootcamp 40GB HDD (Mac OS X) and finally setting up a new fresh and clean system which won't get in touch with any Windows forever.

Docker is building my scripts to slow. On windows script building is flying, but on Docker(which runs Linux) is slow as hell.7
-
I want to buy a ThinkPad in order to replace a Chromebook and put a Linux in it, but they don't refund the Windows licence 😕20
-
WSL works nice, i'm using Ubuntu 18 on windows 10, running windows docker engine and using it via linux client. What about you?5
-
Trying to explain to windows noob that Linux isnt just one distro rather a couple of different ones is a bitch.. aargh.5
-
I recently bought a XPS 15 and it came with Windows, but I'm thinking of putting Linux instead and maybe have a Windows VM.. I love Linux for dev and customization but Windows is just easy to game on. What is your experience on gaming on Linux ?10
-
Anybody got good source of how to install Arch Linux alongside with Windows? Cause arch wiki is killing me.14

//norant
I used to run linux with photoshop and illustrator on wine but I recently switched back to windows so I can run the adobe stuff natively and im using the new linux subsystem and honestly , it works pretty darn well.3 -
I would love to use linux/ubuntu and I set up a dual boot for my laptop, but it just freezes on me every 10-15 minutes. Afterwards I have to force shutdown and it's really frustrating. I googled the issue and only found updating kernels to be a solution, tried that and it broke my ubuntu. Any suggestions what I should try?
Windows works without freezing btw ;)4 -
Should I switch from windows to Linux? I'm a college student doing CS and most stuff I've seen on GitHub and such mainly have installation instructions on Linux.
I've heard a bunch of my friends go "dude if you code, consider switching to linux"
Is it worth making the switch? Should I dual boot my laptop or completely switch? Or could I make do with a bootable USB drive?9 -
If there is WIne for windows emulation why isn't there any Line and Mace for emulating linux and mac os?3
-
Why can't windows just use 'uptime' to show how long the site has been up rather than having to fucking waiting for 'systeminfo' to load.... I'm considering switching over to Linux in the new year, or just buy a new laptop and put Linux on it and use it as my daily driver.4

I really like Linux but it makes me mad when apps I use, like Adobe XD, are available for everything but Linux.
I'm not even going to start with HBO not being able to load streams on Linux. I payed money to stare at a black screen.
I tried to use PlayOnLinux for Adobe Creative Cloud but XD doesn't even appear there.
I also hate dual booting because when I'm using Win or Linux for a bit I tend to make different desktops for different programs/IDEs/browsers and I like them to be open at all times for easy access when I want to do shit. Dual booting means having to open all this again
VMs are even worse in that they tend to be very slow and when I see choppiness when moving windows I immediately "nope" out of that shit
I can't put up with Windows's bs anymore, but not being able to use the software I need is even worse.
I don't know what to do3 -
Hello folks, have a question, I can't decide if I should install windows 7 (super stable Windows btw) or a Linux distribution (debian or Ubuntu 14), I've always been a Windows guy and was thinking of switching to Linux on my new free dos laptop and wanted to have a hand on Linux, but please I don't want that Windows/Linux fight I just need real advice. Some friends told me to get Windows 7 and a VM Linux just for practice, I also thought about having a dual boot Windows Linux server , I think it would be the best config for me.. so..?3
-
Windows or Linux?
It's a simple choice.
Window for personal computer (I wanna use visual studio and win apps and sometimes play games)
Linux for server (a 500m RAM Linux work better than 4g RAM window)14 -
I kind of feel like I type faster when I use Windows than Linux.
Don't know whether it is because I type code on Linux and !code on Windows1 -
Spent hours installing m2cryoto adb openssl on Windows but couldn't reach anywhere, at home it took five minutes and done. There is nothing like osx (brew) and linux. Things are so easy on them. They make development faster.

Why is Windows including Linux bash with like Windows is another Linux distro, this pisses me Offfffff the shit!!!!!!!!👿👿👿👿👿 Why can't Windows does his own thing, than stick his finger where it is not needed!!!!!!!!!2
