This company!
Ugh.
Two days ago we had an hour and a half meeting on which projects to focus on, with the result being all seven are top priority. Because of course.
Last night I told my boss why an api he has me hitting always returns 401s; even gave him the line# responsible for the response (in his code). After an hour and sixteen minutes of him debugging, he finally admitted I might be right. zzz. This morning, he tells me it's on my end, and to ask someone else for their project's API code. The problem is that the server is not accepting the new application's key, since that key is not in the allowed list. That other project works just fine. Guess why? Their key has been whitelisted for months. But it's totally my code. Yeah. Bloody brilliant. 🔅
Anyway, today we're discussing "Winning with Accountability," a 100 page book that boils down to "do what you say you'll do, by when you said you'd do it, and take responsibility if you don't." But a huge part that the boss is stressing is: provide the exact date, time, and timezone of when things will be completed by. I mean That's fine for sales calls and reports and such trivial busywork. But dev projects? Not so much.
And that's been my past three days!

A friend of mine has a PC that was overheating. His solution: Dumping the entire mobo and components in a box with Olive oil.
Pros:
+ Decrease heat by 15℃
+ Low cost solution
Cons:
- Hard to maintain components
- Dust can't be cleaned from the box
- House smells like an Italian kitchen 😂6 -
The Manager kept masturbating over "low hanging fruit".
The apples on the bottom of The Product have all been picked.
The apples at the top are starting to rot.
The Manager masturbated a bit more over the low hanging fruit.
The bottom of The Product is now so slippery with Manager Cum that the brave engineers can't reach the top anymore.

Hi ceo_candidate:
Welcome to CEO 101:
Q: How do you impress shareholders?
A: Without understading any processes, I cut down half of the IT team, saving a few 100k a year. Adding stress to the remaining team that now has to maintain lots of extra stuff. But, who cares? I still will expect my deliverables on time.
That is correct!

This happened sometime back..
A guy came to our university with a social network that he created. It was for students and professors to interact, to form study groups and earn points as they mark done topic as "studied". He made a deal with our university, so everyone was forced to sign up for this.
While he was giving a demo of the website, me and my friend started ranting.
"This website is shit. Why are we forced to use this?"
"This UI looks just like LinkedIn"
"This top bar is right out of bootstrap"
"I have seen that graph in one of the libraries. He didn't even change the defaults."
Another friend who was sitting besides us was hearing all this.
"I don't understand a word you guys are talking. It is too high level for me"
We replied, "Don't worry. We will talk in low level. 00101110010101..."4 -
devRanters, especially the linuxers, unusual request/question, especially coming from @linuxxx!
I just found two very old netbooks which still contain windows xp (I didn't even know I still had them at all) and I'm obviously going to turn them into Linux netbooks.
Does anyone know any good looking linux distro's that run well on low-end hardware? This is not my specialty since I either deal with servers or higher-end computers :).

Hahahahahahahahahha I'm not going to do anymore of your "quick" projects that result in shit pay and drain me out. I got actual fulfilling projects I enjoy working on hahahahah not again "friend". The audacity of this guy to ask me to handle a big project alone while he sits on his ass and gets a 50% cut. He should have paid attention in school if he wanted to be a programmer. All he does is lie to clients that he can code yet runs to me to do all the work. Hahahah let's see how he gets out of this one. Not gonna help you today "friend".5

Is this something cool?
I wanted a portable battery but I had no money (student life in Mexico), but I had a couple of damaged tablet batteries and a damaged router case.
A year ago I did not use it, but now it is useful when I occasionally go out to capture some Pokémon.
The downside is that it only has one USB port to discharge and micro-B to charge. And of course I do not go out with the antennas, I take them off, I just put them on for the demonstration, haha.2 -

Ye, so after studying for an eternity and doing some odd jobs here and there, all I can show for are following traits:
* Super knowledgeable in arm/Intel assembly language
* C-Veteran with knowledge of some sick and nasty C-hacks/tricks which would even sour the mood of your grandma
* Acquired disdain of any and all scripting languages (how dare you write something in one line for which I need a whole library for!)
* All-in-all low-level programmer type of guy (gimme those juicy registers to write into!)
After completing the mandatory part of my computer science studies, all I did was immerse myself into low-level stuff. Even started to hold lectures and all.
Now I'm at the cusp of being let free into the open market.
The thing is: I'm pretty sure that no company is really interested in my knowledge, as no one really writes assembly anymore.
Sure, embedded programming is still a thing, but even that is becoming increasingly more abstract, with God knows how many layers of software between the hardware and the dev, just to hide all the scary bits underneath.
So, are there people in here who're actually exposed to assembly or any hands-on hardware-programming?
Like, on a "which bit in which register/addr do I need to set" - kind of way.
And if so, what would you say someone like me should lookout for in a company to match my interest to theirs?
Or is it just a pipe dream, so I'd need to brace myself to a mundane software engineer career where I have to process a ticket at a time?
(Just to give a reference: even the most hardware-inclined companies I found "near" me are developing UIs with HTML5 to be used in some such environment ....)12 -

Am I the only one who enjoys learning low languages like C/C++ and absolutely hate Java (seriously FUCK Java so much I hate using it)
Working with pointers and just having the compiler completely explode in your face because you forgot a semicolon or an index out of bounds maybe a bracket just disappeared and you are frustrated but then you fix it and voila it works like magic.
Maybe it's just a thing of mine because C++ was the first programming language I learned and I miss this feeling of hopelessness (I think I might have done BDSM fetishes) and it makes me feel nostalgic.
When I was first learning them all I thought about was how cool this stuff is.19 -

I mean, you already pay me half of the average salary I should be making, but yeah, let me get right on that...
To be fair, I work with this guy because he is a really good guy to work for, is very hands-off (no micro-managing), doesn't expect me to work on the clock or any overtime and lets me make all the calls with our directions in development. Plus he pays me all he can afford, so it's not like he's trying to screw me (he shares the books with me to prove it).

Actual Shower thought about showers.
Every shower has 2 “parameters”: Throughput and Intensity.
When the intensity is high and the throughput is high, you feel like you are being hosed down by the fire brigade.
If the intensity is low and the throughput is high, it feels like you’re standing in the rain.
When the intensity is low and the throughput is low, you get mist/fog.
If the intensity is high and the throughput is low you’re just being fucking pissed on.
Somewhere in between is the sweet spot imo.7 -

You may be a prod ninja but I believe that every dev should have a decent level of exposure with a low level language(s). Sure you can make an HTTP server, do a sentimental analysis, topic modeling, set up multinode clusters, write ORM queries from dbs and all sorts of awesome stuffs with Python/Ruby/PHP/JS/GO etc but none of them teaches you what happens at kernel level. Things like memory leaks, threading, multiprocessing, memory allocations etc can only be better learnt from a low level language.

Hitting a really deep, deep low in the manic-depressive roller-coaster of the development cycle:
There comes the crunch time. No meeting goes by hearing the odious: "We don't have time for that." - One critical component needs to be finished for Big Sur and instead of addressing the real issues we keep changing design and goal. One main dev already gave up fighting the PO and team lead(!) - and now I'm next. So that dev build this really clean and minimal library as the core part. But now it's just like, yeah, take that nice Porsche engine put it on the old rusty bicycle from the shed,.. but maybe because that's so shitty we need that specially formed exhaust pipe to tune it. Yeah, very 'agile' - Only thinking about it makes me shudder in disbelief and anger. I shouldn't take that shit so serious, be emotional about shit code, I know, but I can't. Let them drive some rounds around the block, if it runs at all,.. because until now we still didn't make it run on the fuckin' street. It's all so insane. Will make some nice fireball, when it goes up in flames.
Well, I have been part of quite some shitty projects. Real suicide commandos set out to fail, and somehow stood them through or made it even "work" though it should never have. But what enrages me here is, that it needn't to be that way. We had plenty of time. Our team was often rowing along in good rhythm. And now I just feel drowned in resignation and sarcasm.rant fuck po resignation crunch time shitty design manic-depressive sarcasm low roller-coaster low fail hard -

I HATE YOU STREAMING SERVICES! FUCK YOU!
Here's the setup:
I work in a rather small office, where we are like 7 people (including me). Now, there's one person in charge of putting music through speakers (obviously, not everyone enjoys the same kind of music)
Well, we have a hell of a small bandwidth (1.5MBPS tops), now, add to that that every single fucker here uses "Spotify" and it's streaming their music...
WHY!!!!
Good side: I have my earphones and ~30GB of my music on my phone, so it's not an issue for me, also, I'm kinda audiophile, so Spotify quality sucks.
Bad side: I can't even fucking load Google because those fuckers are eating the bandwidth.5 -

Am I the only one that goes crazy when I have to use a low-code system? It makes no sense to me. The abstractions that help an average schmuck make a feedback loop of abstractions in my brain.
How do I loop over this collection. Is this a collection or a single thing? How does a variable work? Logic doesn't work the same? How do I know what is actually coming into this little port? When does the database get this? Can I see a debug log somewhere? Why can't I see the code behind this little popup window?
I ask someone that isn't a developer and they say, "You are overthinking it."
Fuck that. You pay me to overthink things and describe them in excruciating detail. You wouldn't hand an illustrator three wax crayons and ask them to make a photo-realistic picture.7 -

Ah, so the great war I my head has begun. When you're a CS major in college, you can't help but realize that knowing everything about computers and how to develop everything on thrm is next to impossible. So you start to question "what will be my specialty?". "Web dev or Low-level? "swirl through my head. I work on projects when I should be writing that 5-page essay for that College Composition course I care nothing about. Then on my own time I need to openly practice and refine my craft, and studying. Sheesh, I hate time (or the lack thereof). How do you do anything major on your own these days?3

Been programming one language or another since the 90s. So I have been exposed to a lot of things and worked on a lot of different systems. However I have never heard of Fizz Buzz before. I heard it was something they use to test people's programming skills during an interview. I figured I better look it up in case I get asked this during an interview. Of course I found a nice explanation on wikipedia:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/...
I was shocked. This is being used to test programmers for competency? This is so trivial a non programmer could write the pseudocode to solve this problem. Is the bar really this low?
I remember I didn't want to pay for the C programming class in college. So I bought a book on C++ and read it cover to cover and wrote a bit of code. I then tested out of the C course (didn't know C was much different than C++ then, I started with Pascal). I didn't do that great on the written test. However for the coding test I easily passed that. I formatted the text in nice rows and columns using the modulus operator. The instructor said: "I have never seen anybody make it look this nice." Then I was shocked because that is "just how you do it".
It just seems to me that if fizz buzz is hard, then this may not be the right field for you. Am I egotistical in that opinion? None of this programming stuff has ever been particularly difficult for me.2 -

Yea this is a great idea, experienced developers can now spend hours trying to fucking find where a single style is coming from. Oh it was too easy to cmd+f a stylesheet or a codebase to find something particular? Yea FUCK THAT. Lets turn EVERY SINGLE STYLE into a unsearchable .yml file where every style definition is now a machine hash. WAY easier to use. Over the last few weeks, I've learned two things about the head of my division:
1. They "don't care about code quality"
2. They want to try a "low-code" approach for the web frontend of a completely custom piece of what is currently desktop software
This is despite the fact that we have three full time developers with a wide range of both front and back end skills on the payroll, a deep library of existing components for various frontend frameworks, a custom CSS library, and a decent deployment pipeline for frontend code.
But sure, let's try low-code. Let's see how far that gets us. -

How do you deal with low motivation and procrastination caused by burnouts? I've worked on a project almost non-stop for 3 weeks, now I can't think of touching a computer nor going to the gym. All I do is sleeping.

So far so good, I was able to operate stuff that I wanted but I just can't stand working in a really low resolution. My guess is probably incompatibility with nVidia driver. Tried everything, rpmfusion, the negativo17 repo, the current official fedora repo, the If-Not-True-Then-False guide, and bumblebee. None works.
Makes no sense at all. Luckily my Win10 still works. Now I'm stuck on whether to continue trying to get Fedora distro up or try a different distro and start back from square one...3 -
7:37 PM here, it's very very hot and I'm warming like a fuckin' AMD CPU

Anybody else that low-key hates step debugging async code in nodejs ?
Miss the simplicity of synchronously execution flow… Like debugging php with xdebug ☺️6 -
That feeling of going from a high stress job to a low stress job that lets you travel on the companies dime.... pure bliss.

Low-end smartphones sold to Americans with low-income via a government-subsidized program contain unremovable malware, security firm Malware bytes said in a report.
According to the report of ZdNet: The smartphone model is Unimax (UMX) U686CL, a low-end Android-based smartphone made in China and sold by Assurance Wireless. The telco sells cell phones part of a government program that subsidizes phone service for low-income Americans. "In late 2019, we saw several complaints in our support system from users with a government-issued phone reporting that some of its pre-installed apps were malicious," Malwarebytes said in a report. The company said it purchased a UMX U686CL smartphone and analyzed it to confirm the reports it was receiving.7 -
How to fuck up a simple feature in terms of usability and functionality and take two freaking years (!) for it?
Just use some low code dogshit like the crap that SAP provides.1 -

Man, I thought this low temperature screen on my Mi A1 was a gimmick. But it's great! 💯 satisfied. -
People always brag to me about how they put up with bad working environments. I really have low tolerance and low respect for bosses who are less transparent and egotistic (about their opinion). It's so damn difficult to find good leaders. Sometimes, I get a feeling that maybe it's me who is overthinking and should probably be more patient.2

Jr a little low while trying to do some stuff. Took down the prod sql server for a while. Some disturbance but not the end of the world but she’s a little low.
I am like: GREAT WORK!!! NOW YOU ARE LEARNING!!! 💪
Time for cake and celebrations!1 -
Been searching for an offshore data server for at least 5 fucking hours. There's nothing worse than searching for decent low-end offers outside of europe.7

You can see the type content selection menu through the UI
To reproduce:
1. Have the rant of the week banner
2. Open type selection menu
3. Close the rant of the week banner
4. Now the menu is behind the rants5 -

How do I deal with low motivation? Ask me when I find out because I haven’t been motivated to do anything in awhile.

Does Professional Scrum Master certification add any value to a devs profile? I am asking because I failed in the first attempt. 😟4

Home office adventures day 1:

Productivity low

Recently I deal with low motivation, because of my internship. I have to write a lot of reports and I just hate that. I'm almost at the end of my internship, these reports just get higher priority.
So instead of being busy with my internship I just start a random side project. The advantage is that I don't think about the reports and the disadvantage is that I don't think about the reports... so at the moment I just don't want to do anything at all.
What I meant to say is, please keep in mind that it's not all about work. Just do stuff that you like, but make sure you have the right balance between it. I just started too late with a relaxing side project and lost track of time and now I only can work on my reports, writing 10 lines a day or so..1 -
Any senior dev who get less paid in terms of his juniors or am I the only one?
If anyone who is in same shoes like me please suggest how to cope with the feeling of unrest and feel less miserable.6 -
I think my mac is possessed,
closing my vagrant server due to low battery when I was doing my final test.

Stayed up late watching the game. Got nothing done. Thankfully tomorrow is Friday and expectations will be low!4

Is buying macbook worth it? I mewn thre are a lot of laptops under vwry low price range that look like macbook and have far better specs10

EVP handed us a packet for some salesforce "low code application" and "citizen developer" bullshit. What is this garbage? Who's trying to weasel into my space? Now we are obliged to learn and use this restrictive "low code" framework instead of doing what we already know, because management types and IT guys cannot compile C#.

Watching my first demo of Outsystems low code bullshit. What self respecting dev would WANT this as their environment?? How the complete fuck is this a thing??? Buncha lazy shits...4

It really irritates me when other engineers of various levels get hung up on pedantic, low hanging fruit bullshit in my merge requests. Like really, why keep a thread going just to force me to explain why I chose to make a particular magic string a constant that you don't see a use for? What about all the infrastructure setup code I spent 3 days on? Did you even read any of that to make sure it was sound and that my dumb/drunk/tired ass didn't make an obvious mistake, or could have done it better?2

Worst recruiter experience...
Found out RHT took 40% of what the company was paying me. In combination with the unfair company who ended up hiring me, the problem is...you start low and you stay low, hard to move your wage up! 🙄😌😥 -
I have a USB 3.0 hub that works mostly. However, sometimes it freaks out and starts disconnecting things attached to it. It also causes my gaming mouse that updates 1000 times per second to operate wrong. Yes, it was a cheap usb hub to begin with. I am using a laptop and I want a decent hub to use with my gaming peripherals if possible. I have an old belkin hub I am going to try that usb 2.0. But I really want a decent usb 3.0 hub. I need something that is not cheap pos made by no name like most of amazon products. I want something good that I wont regret getting later. It also needs to have been tested with a 1mS update rate device like my gaming mouse.

Fellow Android users:
Is there a live wallpaper which downloads images from a RSS feed and low-poly-ifies them, somewhere in the infinite wilderness of the Play Store?
There are a few low-poly wallpaper things that I've seen, but none with RSS.4 -
Probably one of these:
- electrician (middle or low voltage)
- unfit for employment in germany, which is the worst. -

I'm thinking about using my rep to post a collab for a open source low powered (low powered if possible) motion trail cam app.
Only I have zero android experience (I am a nodejs/meteor/javascript dev by trade).
Shall I go for it and rely on others experience? or go for something nodejs based?5 -
Why why do people bother making so many lazy Stackoverflow spinoffs? Who would ever want to read that garbage low effort websites?6

There's a IT company I know that uses low level languages to develop, mainly to increase the efficiency of their programs. But it's rumor.

Am really worried about this major ( Computer science major ) in my country ( Lebanon ).
We have a very good potentials and very low salaries compared to it. And in case we apply abroad there is always an indian who have the same experience at least and most of them request a very low salary.

How do I get into low-level programming?
I already know Java Js and Python and I feel I want to take my skills to the next level and learn C or Go.
But what to start with in that area after I learn the language? I have no idea what to do with low level stuff. -

Is it worth it to learn low-code platforms such outsystem? Is it flexible enough to create custom codes or custom UI/Ux? Is too much abstraction worth it for large systems?3
-
Low code platforms. I've been studying them for a few months now and have been really surprised what one can do with them. Very productive stuff for many things even if not for everything. A wholehearted recommendation.

Non tech question. Did anyone here dealt with histamine intolerance? Have you tried histamine low diets what was the experience? My main motivation for going histamine low is that I want to cure my brainfog. Because with brainfog I cant freaking focus on coding properly.2

To me as a web developer, the webflow designer UI feels quite unintuitive and so a seemingly easy little JavaScript customization takes hours XD

When you send mails to different companies trying to get an Android developer internhip and none of them don't even feel you are good enough to be rejected 😥😥1

why do these modern apps looks horrible especially in low dpi displays aka non retina ones?
I am talking zed editor, warp terminal, etc.1 -
Low code from a developers perspective:
- it's like of someone cut off my legs from the knees down, because it's too complicated, and told me to pole vault. Crappy prosthetic sold separately, and it's charged per prosthetic.
-imagine using MS Word, but you had to, search for a word by typing it in, drag and drop each word, and you are not allowed to use bigger words or images without paying for a licence.
And to those who say this is the future, try using it for a month. Guarantee you will change your tune.3 -
Anyone used secrethub.io? They have a free plan, so seems like it could be neat for low-budget projects.1
