I kept my composure but politely told her to give me a little bit more to work with..5 -
Manager: You devs are constantly complaining about context switching, if you were on my level you would be able to multitask and switch from task to task without an— hold on I’m getting a text *tap* *tap* *tap tap* *tap* *send noise*
Manager: Right, what were we talking about again?

WTF Python!!! "Master" and "Slave" perfectly convey the concept. In the English language many words have different meanings based on their context. It's plainly obvious that no allusion to human slavery is meant in the context of software or hardware module relationships. I don't even think it is problematic. The real problem seems to be the people who are taking terms outside their intended space. Why are we linking a scar on human history to terminologies explaining technical relationships?
Then lets also ban 0 and 1 because it can offends non-binary peoples!22 -
Manager: I need estimates for your sprint tasks
Me: I've never done any of this before, my estimates have no context and are effectively worthless
Manager: don't worry it's just for the Jira board.
Me: OK *gives estimates*
End of sprint comes...
Manager: Why isn't task X done?
Me: *sigh*
I don't miss my old job :)3 -
So I take an English test at work last week. Today I got the results and I found this at the end. ( context: I’m a humble Peruvian trying to get better at English :) )4

Buzzwords.
I can't fucking stand it when people use them in the entirely wrong context, just to sound smart, or whatever very much wrong or invalid reason.
But, I also can't fucking stand it when people, just because some word is a buzzword, invalidate/demonize it by default when it *IS* used in the right context.
I see this last one more and more and it annoys me to death.5 -
I had 2 options.
Option 1: Read and increase knowledge.
Option 2: Take a sentence out of context and make a meme3 -

I just started a new job where PHP and JavaScript are the primary languages. I came from a position as a firmware engineer where I coded in C/C++. I'm learning PHP as I go. I don't see why everyone hates on PHP. I find it extremely powerful. Especially when used in an object-oriented context.9

It baffles me how underrated Electron is.
I'm not a fan of learning millions of different Framework, but I think that Electron is groundbreaking.

Microsoft, you can't sneak this past me! I notice you're putting rounded corners in specific parts of your OS, and I don't like it. It's inconsistent with your design and your slow roll-out of the rounding makes things round in some areas (such as the context menu in the calculator app) and square in other areas! (such as the context menu anywhere else)
All I'm saying is either do it everywhere, or do it nowhere.
(I realize the terminal is not an official application YET, but it's a good example)8 -

@dFox really loving devRant, but I feel like the site should require text with picture posts or something. Noticed a trend where people are just using this as a meme aggregator instead of rant site.

I think, after a few weeks, I'm actually quite enjoying that the Android SDK is genuinely awful.
We all know the feeling: "This is shit, whoever designed this is a fuc...oh, I get it. This is pretty cool actually."
So, it's nice to encounter a genuine dumpster fire of a platform.
I think the beautiful thing about its absolute obsession with providing a context to every single operation, is that you end up passing it around so much that the very concept of context becomes redundant.
Honestly, half of the stuff in here I've just attached to a global statics class, because it saves having to request a context, or a manager or some fucking kind of adapter, and it works just fine.
I've started to laugh when I look up a solution and see the browser scrollbar shrink into infinity, because the recommended answer is about two whole pages' worth of boilerplate to make the back button disappear or something.
I don't think there's been a single moment where I've just been in the flow of writing code. Pretty much all of the process is grafting boilerplate into it.
Not long til deadline, thank fuck.2 -

Never ask "How to start with X?". It's a dumb open-ended question with vague open-ended solutions.
Rather ask "I'm at X, want to do Y, I have Z proposed solution. Does that sound good?"

I am seeing a trend on here, where people dismiss a technology based upon their experience that they cannot use it first try, even though they clearly lack experience or knowledge about the proper usage.
Also people seemingly tend to imply self explanatory at various topics ranging from relatable broadly known experiences to small nieche opinions.
How is that? Since when do people, especially programmers, think they do not need to explain their viewpoint, even though there is not a clear indicator as to why? Stating an opinion without any backup to the claim is just a void call in the wind. Of course i know that user X thinks that Y is his or her opinion. My C# class loves to come up with weird/unrealistic scenarios to teach a specific language feature... I feel like the more effective way to teach would be to mention a real life scenario where it makes more sense to use the feature and give it some context rather than coming up with some arbitrary series of classes to represent departments and employees and then say "write extension methods for them to write them out"
If you tell me that I'm going to go, ok this works, but is there a specific reason I should do this instead of using a for or foreach to do the exact same thing? Don't get me wrong I see the appeal of extension methods as well as LINQ but this class never gives any sort of context as to why we're doing stuff. This class could be good, I've had classes that focus on language specific features taught in ways that make sense... My Java prof did a great job...
Also all the slides are terribly written...
Like I attached an example of the description for extension methods... The slides then go on to explain how the syntax for them works and gives an example...
Like ok I guess technically you told me what they are and how to use them, but gave zero context...
On the opposite end of the spectrum, I go to MSDN for their definition of extension methods, and it is much more clearly written and gives context to where/why they're used... and this is supposed to be a 5th semester course...2 -

When I search for anything programming-related on Google, I realize how many different meanings a word can have. Adding more words to specify context sometimes even makes it worse and it often makes results more unspecific and unrelated. And when I find something that exactly matches my case, it's an unresolved question from 2017 or 2006.9

It's really frustrating and confusing when switching the context from Java to js and vice versa.4 -
I'm such a fucking idiot
I'm setting up an api and to prevent unwanted fields or circular dependencies from showing up I define what fields should appear in a few serialization yaml files.
These files define what fields should appear in a given context. The default context for every field is to always show the id, and only a call to /posts will give you all the fields of the posts for example. This means that if you retrieve a comment with a linked post, the post will only show up as an id, but the comment will have all its fields.
I've been struggling with a stupid problem for 2 hours, I could verify that the yaml files were loaded in, all entities had such a file and the configuration was exactly according to the docs.
Guess why my api calls still caused circular errors?
Because I forgot to do the $view->setContext$this->defaultContext); call that determines what context should be used for the response.
FUCK ME WHY DID IT TAKE SO FUCKING LONG TO FIGURE THAT OUT OMG
Google you say? Ofcourse I hunted google results! But I was unknowingly part of an XY problem and was looking for what the problem wasn't >:(

So, this is a story of me leaving my current job. I am in a maintenance PHP project. I usually love PHP but I hate the way this project is done, therefore I hate this project
Now, see the attitude change in people when they come to know I will no longer be there:
> 7:49 AM : *gets a mail without context with some photographs*
> 9:00 AM : *I leave for my doctor's visit which is once in 3 months*
> 10:00 AM: I see, still no email with context, well, I'll go back to sleep
> 12:00 PM: I see, *gets an email from the manager*, so you want this news to be updated with these new images
At this point, I deliberately postponed the task, because I am salty because you are sending images with no context.
> 3:00 PM: Okay, this is done. *send e-mail, WhatsApp, and hangout to the manager that task is done*
> 3:08 PM: Post a rant on devRant!5 -

In our class we have one subject where we take notes on one shared Google docs document. To be honest, this may be the worst "teamwork" that I every had to deal with.
• Simply copying the stuff from the blackboard:
• Missing context
• document consists of keywords and occasional sentences
• These fucking deep nested lists
• No quality control whatsoever
--> nobody fucking cares
• What, nobody made notes for this point?
• Any attempt to speak up result in me being scolded
• Be me, the only one not shopping on amazon instead of taking notes
• Wtf does this mean, where's the context
• one line of code without needed context code
No quality, no Motivation, no better alternatives, no fun. -

When user interface elements unsolicitedly change their position, something unexpected might be clicked.
For example, the search engine list at the bottom of the Firefox suggestion box that appears when typing something into the URL bar ("This time, search with:"). When the number of suggestions changes, the height of the box changes, and since the search engine list is at the bottom, its position changes too. This could happen milliseconds before I wanted to click on one, which causes either searching for something I did not look for, or closing the URL bar.
It also causes an uncertainty whether the buttons will remain in place, causing delays until clicking.
The same happens on the image context menu for images on the Kiwi browser. It shows a preview thumbnail on top of the options in the context menu, but since the context menu opens before the thumbnail loads, the appearance of the thumbnail pushes the options down. If this happens few milliseconds before one is going to tap on something, it causes one to tap on the wrong place.2 -
Very vague and large question but: How do you become better in terms of software development / engineering?

"First ask the context of something and never why it's like it is"
I used to criticize bad code and get ratled by it... My mentor said this to me and added "sometimes it was made by an asshole and sometimes it has a reason"...

My biggest pet peeve is that too many developers don't realize that "regex != regular expressions", probably because of bad naming and bad documentation. It's easy to assume that they're the same, but most regex syntaxes today are actually at least context-free grammars, since they support backreferences.7

To add a bit more context to my last rant.
The following situation happened today and similar situations are at the moment common as fuck.
Situation started roughly 1 1/2 months ago as a deployment failed.
Seemed to be a DNS problem for the devs, so my basic assumption was that they checked their shit.
As I was and I am currently more than swamped, told them it had to wait if it is an DNS issue...
Well.
Backstabbing product manager complained to upper management as it took so long.
Backstabbing manager even went so far to propose alternative solutions - think of switching product to work around issue and throwing away a year of development of a 5 man team...
So additional to my work I had to deescalate and prevent complete nonsense.
Today I finally found time for the problem.
After 2-3 hours of turning every stone inside the DNS setup, cloudflare, loadbalancers, etc...
Well. Devs. Don't trust them.
Turned out the devs misconfigured the environment entirely.
Its not so obvious in this product as it is rather complicated, though the devs documentation explicitly mentioned that if one overrides the configuration for e.g. several languages, one has to make sure to set two env variables for TLS mode...
There was only one set.
:(
8 fucking weeks of backstabbing and blaming others while they could have just read their own fucking documentation and fixed that shit in 5 minutes.2 -

Listening to someone others participating in some meeting (on speaker) (I'm not a part of):

Participating in a meeting myself:

Hi there!
What do you guys think about the feature "ContextApi" released with React 16.3?
From my point of view it is pretty neato to get rid of some dependencies coming up with redux, if the only thing you want is to distribute collected information among several components for rendering.
On the other hand, if one replaces the redux pattern with the context-api, the detailed information for debugging will be lost, including the time-travelling feature.
For compensation, there is a guy who had built a bridge between the context-api and the redux dev tools, which even will restore the ability to time-travel through the information flowing through the react context.
https://medium.freecodecamp.org/rep...
I will definitely try out a migration of our redux structure to context-api in an experimental branch of one of our products! -

More context -- I recently started working on a graphics intensive project and really need this debugging screen that runs on server. -
So today I needed produce some files with an unknown file name, not specified by business. I said in the standup that I still don't know what it is supposed to be. BA says they will find out. Speak to them all day discussing it. The architect says its in the documentation. BA and I don't find it. Turns out it isn't. I ask a sister team what they did in a similar situation, they said they named it something arbitrary and moved on. I was like sweet, GG story. Later I'm discussing work with my tech lead. Email pops up look at that and read. Look back at tech leads screen. What do I see, file names. At this point I'm frustrated because all I see is file names that look similar. My senior then speaks and says 'Yeah we've seen them for X days now' I'm like really? He says yeah and I hope we don't get anymore people like you. At this point my colleague dev bursts out laughing and I feel humiliated. Only to realise they are the names of other files. Try to explain myself but my senior is already looking at his PC doing sweet fa.
I'm now raging a bit inside and want to leave but can't because I'm tied into a horrible contract.
So Today I realised I'm might be being bullied by my senior dev.1 -
People need to stop taking things out of context, a simple AMQP consumer that sends and email does not need a fucking container... I may have said use a container in the past but that does not mean fucking use for a project which you've made into 20 files instead of 100 lines anyway...

For a few days I failed to see that I need to add one string escape instead of re-writing the whole S3 file upload logic to hash file names using md5. :( Context: We were not able to retrieve some files with international letters (like German, Chinese, etc) in their names because of weirdly escaped signed URL to S3.

Explain to me like I'm retarded why underscores are not desirable in a java class names besides, it's not the common convention.

I really don't know how to name a context. I can't use job or a synonym because it's already used for something that only makes sens as job. And I don't want to use any of the handler/manager generic meaning less words. Aaaahhhh! Naming is hard!

Pro tip for XAML binding:
Set your data context before you initialize the component!
Otherwise the component will render with the default values for the properties. -

We can’t use google sheets, cause of security risks.
(Okay...)
Not even for our showcase content.
Which is public.
The showcase content which goal of the company is to have seen by as many ppl as possible.
Cause security issues which may lead to the possibility of people seeing it.
Seeing the content we want them to see.

It would be so easy

Edit: if any security expert can give me a valid explanation better than: “it’s the protocol” I am willing to accept I am wrong, but then the point is that they (colleagues) are dicks for not explaining5 -
Some of my first thoughts on the new 16.3 release of React...
New Context API:
- I’m glad they made the context API less scary, but as a redux user I will still be staying away from using context as a best practise.
Strict Mode:
- I like this a lot. React allows for great freedom in how you do things, but also offers the freedom to write some shit code that in the end does the job. A way to enforce best practises in JSX is good in my eyes.
New lifecycle methods:
- meh. Life moves on

Can the error types of my library depend on a custom library context object to be printable or otherwise meaningful? Pretty much everything else depends on this context, but until now the errors were an exception (no pun intended) because I wanted them to be printable by any handler that bumps into them, without scoping concerns. Now I tried removing them and like a third of my library has suddenly become context-free, because it only used the context to fully resolve everything before error reporting.1

Android FragmentStatePagerAdapter has an overridable method "getPageTitle" this would be great if the adapter had app context or returned an @StringRes int! Don't half bake in stuff!

Why should I use Redux in React aside from its beautiful chrome extension? For job purposes only?
I think RxJs and React context API + hooks can do the same job with less codes.
Also, there are a lot of developers who don't like Redux.
Convince me to use Redux13 -
Anybody here likes Slavoj Žižek? His theory on ideology of toilets got me and since then I'm addicted 😂
I also appreciated his views on ML trends in the political context. 🙂 -
Just found a service method that saves an entity that isn't related to that service, that returns a ModelAndView object. I think my brain just broke. 1) Single Responsibility Principal. Do not save ObjectB in ObjectAService. 2) Services should not be aware of your view context. That's what controllers are for. Do not return a ModelAndView from a service method.

I know it a strange thing to ask but I need help with English grammar ( I am not a English native)
I am doing an assignment on context free grammar program.
What the program need to do it "Produce a grammar tree based on the rule"
For example a sentence "Jame sat.", It will need to produce a grammar tree like this.
S
_____|___
NP VP
| |
N V
| |
holmes sat
The only thing I need to do it give a grammar rule to the program like this
S -> NP VP
NP -> N | Det N
VP -> V | NP
What the above rule said is that the sentence is composed of Noun Phrase and Verb Phrase and Noun Phrase is either is a Noun or a determiner and Noun.
Now here is the meat of the question.
I am having trouble parsing a grammar tree for this sentence "She never said a word until we were at the door here"
I have provided my grammar rule below. I think I forget to add some grammar rule or some of my grammar rule are incorrect. I am not a native English speaker so I am having trouble on it.
The search engine have fail me (I have look up various grammar tree) so I am asking for help on devrant. Grammar nazi are warmly welcome :)
S -> NP VP | S Conj VP | S Conj S
NP -> N | Det NP | N PP | Adj N | Det Adj N | Det N
PP | Det NOM | Det N PP
VP -> V | V NP | V NP PP | V PP | V NP PP Adv
VP -> Adv V NP | VP PP | VP AVP | V PP PP | V
ADJP
PP -> P NP
AVP -> Adv | Adv Adj | Adv AVP
NOM -> Adj Adj N | Adj N | Adj NP
ADJP -> Adj | Adj PP
**I am not sure about these two clause below**
VP -> V | Adv
NP -> Adj Adj N22
