DX is more important than UX.
First make sure that your developer has the best experience, he will make sure that your users have the best experience.7 -
Not sure what hapend... On my laptop running Ubuntu 17.10, I just got a notification:
Problem occured: "Ubuntu is ready"
Not sure what to do now... :P8 -
the official Android documentation says it stands for "What a Terrible Failure"...sure it does Google, sure it does....1

Shared by codechef on their Facebook page. Not sure who the original author.
But it sure does make a pretty good header for your code. ;)

Yeah sure, you can have your site files and database. Host it yourself. Get your cousin to maintain it. Go ahead. Yeah, sure, you're gonna do ~really~ well. Bye bye, ya micro-managing fuck nugget :D3

1. Still dying.
2. Withdrew my application for some job saying "the environment seems unproductive". I'm proud of me. I've never withdrew an application whenever I was unemployed so this is a first. This time it wasn't them telling me I'm not "the right fit" and I kinda feel like I should do this more often but like what if I could survive the hostile environment and earn something instead of literally continuing looking for jobs and this is giving me anxiety and I'm rambling but I can't stop oh my god what have I done... 🤧3 -
I am getting better and better. I no longer leave ":w" at random places in Google Docs... Now I'm just "cmd-s"-ing regularly.6

Coz drinking milk is a skill every CS student need for his/her LinkedIn profile. Sure, the recruiter's and company's job is to make sure you are proficient milk drinker.5

!rant && thanksgivings.
Sure we troll here. Sure we preach strangers here. Sure we hug unconditionally here. But everything is all cool.
I haven't been here very long but I found this community very good to communicate. In fact, we are talking more than dev related things. But I literally don't see any conflict or well.. shit posts/comments.
Really thankful for that. To everyone.1 -
!rant, just wanted to share
I invited some coworkers I count as friends to a drink on friday after work..
One of them replied: I hope it's your birhday..Right?? You're not giving up on us & resigning?8 -
a friend of mine told me about how he hacked this website
all he did was opening the dev-tools in chrome and changing some values...2 -
Friend: Oh god! Are you sure you wanna eat that bunch of garlic?!
Me: Sure. I'm working backend.
Friend: Never mind.5 -
I was checking out this wk139 rants & thinking to myself how does one have a dev enemy.. o.O Well TIL that maaaaybe I have one too..
Not sure if ex coworker was a bit 'weird & unskillful' or wanted to intentionally harm us and thank god failed miserably..
I decided to finally cleanup his workspace today: he had a bad habit of having almost all files in solution checked out to himself, most of them containing no changes whatsoever... I reminded him on many occasions that this is bad practice & to only have checked out files he was currently working on. And never checkin files without changes.. Ofc didn't listen.. managed to checkin over 100 files one time, most of which had no changes & some even had alerts for debugging in them.. which ofc made it to the client server.. :/
On one or two occasions I already logged in and wanted to check if files have any real changes that I'd actually want to keep, but gave up after 40 or so files in a batch that were either same or full of sh..
Anyhow today I decided I will discard everything, as the codebase changed a lot since he left an I know I already fixed a lot of his tasks.. I logged in, did the undo pending changes and then proceed to open source control explorer.
While I was cleaning up his workspace, I figured I could test what will happen if I request changeset xy and shelveset yy, will it be ok, or do I have to modify something else & merge code.. Figured using his workspace that was already set up for testing would be easier, faster & less 'stressful' than creating another one on my computer, change IIS settings and all just, to test this merge..
Boy was I wrong.. upon opening source control explorer, I was greeted by a lot of little red Xes staring back at me... more than half the folders on TFS were marked for deletion.. o.O
Now I'm not sure if he wanted to fuck me up when he left or was just 'stupid' when it comes to TFS. O.O
So...maybe I do have a dev enemy after all.. or I don't.. Can't decide.. all I know for sure is tomorrow I'm creating another workspace to test this and I'm not touching his computer ever again.. O.O -
So this dubass left our company but convinced my boss to migrate our new stuff stack to react+firebase...
Already distributing my resume...2 -
Not sure if I'm disappointed or relieved.
Just spent 5 years trying the get into this class. Studying and asking and getting recommendations. I knew it had less than a 5% pass rate but it's all that I've been aiming for for years.
Finally got into it, and spent 4 months working my ass off. Today I got told that I'm maybe being dropped. And honestly, as disappointed as I am, and I might need a new dream to aim for, I'm actually pretty okay with it.
I've been so stressed and annoyed and unhappy lately. I was starting to debate if this is even what I want. And for the first night in a while I can just drink whisky and not worry about the next test or doing classwork at midnight instead of sleeping.... I can just relax and whatever happens happens. I can't control how tomorrow goes.
Not sure if "oof. I need a drink" or "thank god, lets celebrate with a drink!"3 -
You would think developers would have some intelligence...
*Side note: If you're building a sort of SDK, please for fucks sake never force me to use XCode, and make sure that it actually fucking compiles without me having to fix your code" -
Be proactive and improve your own projects. Publish them on GitHub, and make sure your LinkedIn profile is set up. You'll be contacted soon by companies for sure!3

I always try to break my code when it works without errors the first time.
Just to be sure that the code I wrote is being used.
Anyone else? -
I'm not sure what to answer...
Found on SlimSocial for Facebook - Windows 10 Mobile (latest update😜) -
grandparents: "why can't you fix our tv? I thought you did this kind of tech stuff for a living!?"
me: "no, I build websites"
grandparents: "...."
me: "I make the internet on computers?"
grandparents: "ohhh...so could you fix our speakers? they have the blue tooth, which has the Internet, right?"
me: /facepalm2 -
Windows: "That sure is a nice long running process you've left me with. Sure would be a shame if it didn't finish. Time for automatic updates!"5

Taking mandatory corporate compliance training that says what things I am not allowed to do...
BUT it's actually quite interesting because I never knew you could do these and well it's starting to give me ideas.... -
I don't know how to make this happen:
Me:
"And this is what the customer... wants?"
Someone:
"Yes."
Me:
"Oh ... could you devote a few more brain cycles to this discussion and tell me that again?"
Someone:
"Sure .... oh ... yeah this is horrible... I'll go find out what they really want"1 -
I really do love programming, but I really do hate implementing features that will make the database and code way more messy and complex. Which would be fine, if I wouldn't be quite sure the feature is utter bullshit and the user just can't really frame what they need.
And yes, I've asked my boss if he's sure if that's what they want and if not the other feature I implemented will fit those needs too. Yes, he is sure that they're sure they need exactly said requested feature.4 -
Does the computer push all dots up 1 line and create a new line, or just reset the current line once it reaches the end? *insert uglyfied thinking emoji*5

Found a JS framework that is also very fast (according to their website), just like React, Vue, Angular ...etc. (link: https://aurelia.io/)
Are they like Java and C# ==> Apple and Orange? or are they Orange & Orange Pro?
Someone enlighten me please :)8 -
Safety rules are for sure written in blood, but what keeps on getting forgotten is that this blood is of regular, non-privileged, hard-working people. I for sure empathize with them more than with, say, mark zuckerberg.3

Client had me implement an exit intent modal on their website, inviting visitors to sign up to their mailing list when they moved to close the browser tab.
Client then had me implement an on page load modal which displays the poster for their upcoming event.
Client just emailed "Double popup happening!" with a screenshot of their website with both modals displayed at once.
Kicking myself for replying and explaining that this was expected behaviour in light of what they'd asked for instead of responding, simply, "Yes".1 -
Yeah, sure.. I'll configure your DNS & mail server.. while I'm at it, I'll also optimise your db settings & configure backups..and don't forget LDAP & group policies!! Sure, no probs!! :/4

Politics. Dealing with people, making sure you check in with everyone at all times, making sure you don't seem harsh in code reviews. It's all just too fucking complicated. Just let me build shit.
-
I just want to say make sure you build app to be scalable from the begining I spent around 5 hours remaking my Vue app to use eventbus and vuex because at first I thought it was going to be a much smaller project but it looks like I'm going to expand on it.
Btw it's still not 100% function like it did before the refractoring so ya.2 -
Can someone please explain the benefits of this in Kotlin:
var x = if(a !=b) {
z
}else{
y
}
Even for a conditions with one line body it looks bad in reading and getting a clue of what does this do.
I mean whats wrong with:
var x: MyObject
if(a!=b){
x = y
}else{
x = z
}
Even in switch cases (or as kotlin calls: when) True one return source, but now good luck finding the last line that is the actual returned value ...15 -
"How about we don't do it this way because I have undone what you did and have redone it in a stupid way and if we have to do it the correct way we'll have to undo MY work, so let's just keep it like it is, ok?"
Really? And one of your arguments is "because it's working now", bitch it was working before, you just didn't read my code.
I'll give you the benefit of the doubt though, I don't think you did this on purpose, you were tired yesterday, I get it. But still, could've talked to me before deleting all my code.
I'm not that mad though, I got paid the same and still found a nice pattern I can use on my own future projects, it just won't be used at work. -
When you a find a phantom function that looks important that doesnt get referenced, but the application is so big your not sure so you leave it.

With people complaining about PHP so much, I really what to know why.
I'm thinking about learning it, I'm always up for a challenge8 -
They offered a coding test alongside a resume. So I took it and did extremely well. Showcased my talents wonderfully. They ask for an interview (video call). We do the first half of the interview with an HR rep, goes great, a little over schedule. So we go into the second half with a little over twenty minutes left, and the hiring engineer wants me to write some code. He explains my task and sends me to a site where I can write and execute the code and he can watch. I had never written code with an audience before, and between that and my now 20 minute timer, I was a tangled up ball of nerves. Needless to say, I blew it, writing nothing of worth. He ends the call and I open my IDE. Working solution in 7 minutes. I got a rejection email two days later. Worst part? The company employed the author of one of my favorite "learn to code books". Would have been amazing to work with him. Really demotivating to say the least.2

can you give me/point me to some good example problem/exercise for multithreading? as in, something that's small in scope, but actually requires dealing with most of the multithreading issues & complications? race conditions, synchronization, locks, shared memory access, cross-thread calls/callbacks, etc?2 -

Does anyone use routerhosting?
Routerhsoting seems to be the cheapest of all but in quality I am not sure, anyone used them before?
For sure they are the good choice if I'm trying to get away from Bluehosts or digitalocean since they are expenesive. But in temrs of qulity and since I am looking for a dedicated server I am not sure.3 -
During troubleshooting a prod outage "I'm pretty sure that's not how computers work". Last time he said that he was dead wrong. and he can sure as hell fix it himself next time.
