Me and a junior coder are working on a project. However, he likes to think he's funny and say "Ok google" to stop me from using my phone.
He said "Ok google, search midget porn" when I was calling my mom so naturally I need to get back at him, so when he's in the rec room, I backed up all his code on my flash drive, and copied it to the clipboard, and removed all project files from his computer.
He came back while I was in the bathroom, and when I reentered the room and was balling his eyes out, that his project was gone. I said to him, don't ok google me again and I handed him the flash drive back. He has never done anything bad again.12 -

Follow up to yesterday’s “hybrid/cross-platform is shit” rant about Electron apps being blocked from the Apple App Store.
See the below image of the github issues template on the Electron repo, to file an issue for this problem.
Yes, this is such a common issue with their product, they’ve made it easier to file a github issue. Let’s not address the fact that there is a fundamental flaw in the approach they are using, let’s just make it easier to open a ticket while everyone waits to see if we are allowed to ship our app.
I’ve also heard talk that under some circumstances it’s possible for them to patch out the libraries causing issues. Apple provides tools to identify these libraries ... therefore Electron is doing fuck all to adresss this issue, and adopting a “wait until someone complains” style of approach.

got given the job of removing a menu link on a site my company hadn't built today.
biggest pile of dung ever! the site had folders for 5 different back end languages all full of random files not in use.
I dug around and found it was using a big framework that produces a massive single variable and outputs it as the page.
Eventually I realised this wasn't in use either but was still being loaded in the site! in fact the site even has a database and an admin login but the stupid original dev hard coded all the content in and runs includes to files in the admin folder directly from config!
such a confusing, pointless, shit site! Its like building a car and driving it like Fred from the Flintstones....1 -
every day I get phone calls from some idiot to moan about something I fixed.
I had a job to copy a site and use it for another company, with everyone's consent. I do it and found the original was garbage. hard coded functionalities. limited control over which pages appear in the menu and so on.
problem is the site administrator doesn't understand the system and made pages visible on the menu that shouldn't be and so on. these never showed up before because it was broken.
now she phones every day because she setup her pages wrong originally and tells me stuff like, why did you change this, it worked before and crap.
I never expected she would have setup the pages incorrectly so I never thought this would happen.
lesson here is if it's broken and you're the only one that's noticed, just bloody leave it.1 -

In today’s episode of hybrid/cross platform tools are shit:
Electron 6 and 7 use private API’s on Mac OS, violating apple App Store rules, and apps now can’t be submitted.
The responses also say that continued attempts to try to hide private api usage may result in developer accounts being terminated.
So by using electron, you may get your Apple developer account closed down permanently .... rightly so for picking electron in my mind

@dfox @trogus how is Appcelerator working out for you guys for cross platform development?
I’m going to be making/totally rewriting the mobile apps for an online service this summer and I’m looking into options.
Currently I’m considering Xamarin, React Native, and Flutter, but I looked at the devrant tech stack page and began looking into appcelerator. What made you guys choose that? What’s the experience like?
Also if anyone else has arguments to make for any of the other three go for it! I’m a fairly new (compared to a lot of people on here) dev but Im pretty confident without programming knowledge and I’m just curious what the industry recommendations/people’s opinions are.
Thanks devrant, you’re awesome!27 -

Our project at work goes live in 3 weeks.
The code base has no automated tests, breaks very often, has never had any level of manual testing
will not be releasing with any form of enforced roles or permissions in our first release now due to no time to enforce, however there is a whole admin api where you can literally change anything in our database including roles.
We also have teams in various countries all working separately on the same solution using microservices with shared nuget packages and they aren't using them properly.
Our pull requests are so big - as much as, 75 file changes - in our fe app that I can't keep up with it and I honestly have no idea if it even works or not due to no automated tests and no time to manually test.
We have no testing team, or qa team of any sort.
Every request into the system has to hit a minimum of 3 different databases via 3 different microservices so 1 request = 4 requests with the load on the servers.
We don't use any file streams so everything is just shoved in the buffer on the server.
Most of the people working on the angular apps cba to learn angular, no one across 2 teams cba to learn git. We use git so they constantly face problems. The guy in charge has 0 experience in angular but makes me do things how he wants architecturally so half the patterns make no sense.
No one looks at the pull requests, they just click approve so they may as well push directly to master.
Unfinished work gets put in for pull request so we don't know if the app is in a release state since aall teams are working independently, but on the same code base.
I sat down and tested the app myself for an hour and found 25 fe only issues, and 5 breaking cross browser issues.
Most of our databases are not normalised. Most of our databases make no sense. 99% of our tables have no indexing since there is no expertise with free time to do it.
No one there understands css properly. Or javascript.
Our. Net core microservices all directly use ef in the controller actions so there is no shared code there.
Our customer facing fe app is not dry because no tests so it was decided it was better this way.
Management has no idea on code state, it seems team lead is lieing to them about things like having any level of tests.
Management hire devs that claim to be experts but then it turns out they have basically no knowledge of what they were hired to do, even don't know what json is or the framework or language they are hired for, but we just leave them to get on with it and again make prs too big to review.
Honestly I have no hope that this will go well now but I am morbidly curious to watch. I've never seen anything like the train wreck that we are about to get experience.5 -
Just wasted 2 hours of my life because turns out the C calling convention is really not standardized and depends on the target platform

just spent 2-3 hours trying to make a slideshow responsive for mobiles.
position().left returned an incorrect value breaking the whole thing. then jquery animations slowly produced a one pixel discrepancy when everything is animating based on the container width. breaking the whole thing.
Only solution has been to pretend all is fine.

Sometimes I feel like I am surrounded by idiots. My family are too stupid and lazy to have jobs or do anything involving a skill. They are too dumb to do anything properly so most of the house is fucked.
My co-workers are supposed to be Web devs but cba to learn the frameworks or languages we work on. Some of them have over 5 years experience and don't understand basics like backend verification vs front end.. Or even what json is. Needless to say everything I'm told to do is retarded such as implement roles and permissions where there are no roles, but ot allowed to add roles.
Anyone else surrounded by idiots 90% of the time? How do you not get worn down?2 -

[Post marked as: devRant]
I think one of the weak points in the official devRant app is performance. That's probably due to the cross-platform stuff...
You see, if I shutoff 6 out of 8 cores on my CPU and force my GPU to only run at the lowest frequency possible, devRant gets HELLA laggy. However, games like Geometry Dash run just fine. No lag whatsoever.
It's not that bad though, just explains why devRant uses so much battery on some phones. -
We use Unity in university to display the workings of algorithms.
Cus you know.. a little cross-platform 2d webgl is not enough.. we need this whole friggin engine with an IDE and its 1000 buttons and switches and need for an account and C#...2 -

It is easy to believe something is over-engineered as a junior. You open a solution and get slapped in the face with a wet fish of many classes, with strange names, doing very little, with everything coming together in ways you don't understand.
My advice is to learn about design patterns, clean code, clean architecture, and model driven design. Until that point I don't think you can make such a distinction. And indeed once knowledgeable of patterns and techniques as well as the domain, the same solution can look obvious, elegant and readable.
In a field where everyone is saying 'dont over-engineer', one must be able to tell if something is actually bad, or just uses techniques you don't recognise.
Telling your senior you think something is over done just because you don't understand it is not good. First learn techniques, understand the code, then form opinions that are at least relevant then.
From someone who committed that crime.4 -

I’ve got to build an app in 3 weeks that handles basic image editing and async requests. It’s gotta support both iOS and Android.
It’s also gotta scan barcodes.
What should I use?
Cordova?
Cordova+ionic?
Titanium?
Xamarin?
Dart/flutter?
Try and cram it through in native java/Kotlin and swift?
Something I’m missing?7 -
My tech debt meltdown is happening right now. We are releasing our huge micro service based product next week with no automated testing of any sort. Our front end clients are relatively DRY. No tests and dry = can't change anything = hacks on top of hacks.
Why? Team lead won't listen to me and has beaten me down so I don't care anymore. If it's broken fuck it.2 -
Translating win32 calls to whatever the hell there is in Unix and Unix-like OSes (well, most of them) in order to port a certain game net code library and dear god why did I volunteer myself for this task
At least pevents is there to help, but too bad cmake doesn’t want to compile it with the flag I need (“-DWFMO”) in order to make the “WaitForMultipleEvents” method to work at all. Instead no matter what options I give it on the command line or how I tell VS Code to do it, it seems to give me the finger to my fucking face.
Doing it for games on the cooler OSes... doing it for the community... come on...2 -
VSCode

Can anyone recommend a good cross platform way to develop GUI applications?
Looking at building an IDE for GMS-2 to add a new workflow but can't find any good GUI's...

I just got a bit into OpenCV and I am completely exited. I built a little ball tracker (Yes I know that the cross is on the other side, it's inverted so the cross is at the same position as the ball in front of the camera) and although it is not the most advanced project I think it's kinda cool.9
-
So a problem end client of mine made my life hell for 3 months.
She hired a design agency to design her a bespoke site, she signs off on it and then once I've made it she decides that it's just a draft.
She then spend the next 3 months emailing me multiple times a day, calling the office and calling my personal phone. I'm still not sure how she got my number.
after 3 months on a two week project, many conference calls and changing every single template so that the site is unrecognisable it is finally live.
This woman literally went around her whole office, building and street asking them what they thought should be changed.
Not only that but half way through she suddenly told me she wanted it live in 2 days with a list of changes as long as my arm. I managed it and she wanted more changes anyway so it didnt go live...
The moral of the story is, never go the extra mile for a client more than twice, make sure you charge them for your extra time, try not think about how someone so retarded is the head of marketing at a huge company and that a true rant has no structure.
PS she also complained to me often that the changes had not been made less than 24 hours after requesting them, showed a half built site to her board of directors and then moaned at me that it didn't look right.6 -
Clients expecting quotes before explaining the full extent of the work and then getting mad when I change it after they add a billion more features.
Also, cross-browser testing 😫🔫1 -
wizz kid at work has been working as the lead of our 2 man project for a few weeks.
my first time doing oop back end programming.
he has now pissed off for a week and i found that he made changes directly to the demo version without pushing to bit bucket.
now I have a demo version that is going out with God knows what changes, and a repository version that I can't merge. why? -
Modern cross platform mobile app development is a lie. Maybe if you do Apple first, I don't know. Maybe xamarin is better than Cordova, idk. I've spent more time tweaking to one platform than I would have just starting with a platform and writing two or three code bases. I've got more if iOS statements than I know what to do with and the Windows code is some hacky transpiled mess because UWP isn't ES6 ready for reasons. Also, some error and image handling just doesn't translate. All this and I've got significantly less features than I could have implemented in the same time writing in a native language.3

after all, like I always said, to use xamarin efficiently, you must have good knowledge on native development for each platform10 -

Welcome to cross platform UI Frameworks, where getting build number of your app requires a plugin *cough* flutter *cough*
But it comes in handy to write small apps and not waste time writing twice lol4 -
Weird thought.
Everyone seems to hate electron. It's one of the strongest cross platform developing environments though, so everyone uses it.
Google recently made 2 new platforms, flutter and dart, designed for cross platform applications... but then why is project fuschia's entire UI built in, you guessed it, dart and flutter?
I think Google is trying to make an electron replacement, endorse and grow it in fuschia, and have it grow as the new (resource friendlier) electron.
Of course, only my ramblings. Take with a grain of salt.5 -

Back on my university internship.
I knew nothing about web dev and it was a full stack role. I was taught nothing and just sat down and ran entire solo projects for websites and web apps. Everything was down to me including client contact.
Taught nothing and had to learn the entire stack on the fly whilst trying not to get fired or lose clients. Company had no version control for these projects, no quality assurance/testing, no frameworks or anything.
The first 3 months were not a good time. -

The app has to be demo ready in 1 week and my boyfriend as thinks everything is fine.

I work basically on native android applications. From last week I started exploring cross platform and chose React native. I have zero knowledge on JS. And now it seems very hard to grab. I started a project and learning whatever I'm needing on that purpose. Some props I'm shooting blindly and components I don't even understand clearly how they are working.
Please suggest me a convenient way or guide me with some resources to alleviate my frustration! Pretty please!4 -
Just spent 3 fucking hours trying to find out why my tests are failing. I'm mocking ef with an in memory sqlite dB as THE FUCKING. Net docs say to.
My code does a simple decimal comparison in a linq statement and returns bullshit. Why? Sqlite does not have a decimal type, it does some sort of BULLSHIT to convert it into some sort of text value.
I change all my models to use doubles instead of decimals and all my tests turn green.
WTF IS THIS SHIT. If it doesn't work don't tell me to use it. I expect better of the. Net docs. Wtf are they doing.3 -
So, I'm starting cross platform mobile app development with NativeScript. Just side projects at the moment, nothing "business-related".
Well, as for the Android part, I'm free to choose whether I'd like to develop on Windows 10- or on my Linux machine. I can compile the project on either system. As for publishing it to Google Play, I might do it, I might not do it, since it is possible to install an app by providing the apk file.
As for the Apple part: I'd either have to buy an completely overpriced Apple computer (iMac, MacBook, etc.) or subscribe to a pricey online CI/CD service... just to be able to compile the fucking project. And if that wouldn't be enough, Apple wants to charge me 99 $ a year so I may have a chance to publish the app to their App Store... of course without any guarantees that my app will be published, because it might be revoked by them. WHAT THE FUCK?5 -

You know what I fucking LOVE? Cross platform. I love working with shitty JavaScript CRAP that not only is interpreted (i.e. parsed and processed for EVERY user for EVERY execution) but is also just so fucking easy to debug. I love the fact that management is making not only architecture but technology decisions in the name of initial development time, forgetting that they are exponentially increasing maintenance time. I can't get over my affection for waiting for the bloody CI to build both platforms and because some fucker commits his shite straight to master blocks the generation of BOTH platforms artifacts.2

Okay, my initial revulsion for ABI has receded. All things considered, my options aren't that bad. I just had to change my perspective from "huge downgrade from static linkage" to "huge upgrade from a message channel".
Just like a web API, I have to draw a continuous line through the program that separates specific concerns of interest that must fall on one side or another, and which can only cross through things with specific properties.
There are several crates shipping a number of different binary-compatible types, even generic types. Not everything can cross, sure, but maybe not everything should cross either. Maybe a DLL should receive an opaque handle for certain things, such as interpreter internal code representations. Maybe having these separated is important enough to justify having a translation layer.
I'm sure there's much woe ahead, but I'm learning to stop worrying and love the ABI. -

I just read Robert Martin's chapter on the Single responsibility principle in Clean Architecture.
In it he explains that stakeholders, or actors, that require their own functionality that may be similar to others should have separated code. This is because 2 actors == 2 potential reasons for change.
But this seems to run counter to DRY. Am I mistaken?12 -

I need advice!
I have a project idea that involves creating a cross platform gui but I cannot decide on a framework.
I have been toying with the idea of electron(ugh please no), c++ with either gtk+ or qt, Java with JavaFx.
I really want to be be able to create binaries for Mac windows and Linux while keeping bundlesize low and efficiency high. With this in mind I am leaning towards a c++ implementation but qt (which seems to be the best option for this route) has an insane learning curve. My new boss has such a sensitive ego. The latest is he asked me not to make big changes to 'his' code so whilst attempting to fix a bug in 'his' code I realised a big change was needed. I tell him at standup that he might want to take a look first and he agrees. A few days later he emails me to ask why I haven't finished work on the bug. When I reply he ccs other members of management to ensure he is deflecting any blame from himself (I dont even play the blame game to begin with).
The next day I email him that some tests are broken (he broke them but I just emailed him to bring his attention to it since he doesn't want me touching his code. And because it means he isn't testing properly - not that I would say that).
His reply - "are you going to fix them?"
Me - "ok"
The next morning be brings me into a meeting to ensure I agreed he wasn't to blame and that it was my fault and that he didn't understand my email response as it just said "ok".
I really can't stand such petty bs...2 -

I just joined a team using nuget shared packages for a lot of stuff. The Nuget packages get version incremented on merge - but this approach means that if several people are working cross stack and need to change their project and the Nuget package, everyone is going to have to wait their turn to do a merge and ensure their version is correct when merging (or it won't build).
What are the ways around this and still use nuget packages? I can't stand the though of working on totally different functionality to someone else and have to deal with this shit. -
I decided to rewrite the cross-window comms lib from the ground up. After all it isn't too big (some 500 lines for the first level, 300 for a little abstraction) and the original is more of an artwork than good code. Are there out solutions to create cross-platform GUIs withing a GUI (like Blend in Visual Studio) which does interface with C++?(leave out Qt)

I am starting a testing project at work and we have nothing in place.
Should I use a tool like browserstack and try to hold my selenium tests there or bite the bullet and use something like spec flow to write the selenium tests by hand? The advantage being full control, easy way to integrate with CI and easier to integrate to existing workflows (no need for visual studio and a browser open to work on in parallel).
If I do that I will also need some way to do cross browser testing which I guess will require me to export the tests somehow to a cross browser treating service like browserstack. -
I need help.
Since few days I've been thinking to go for cross platform app development. I've heard some names like Xamarin, Flutter & React Native. But I'm confused in choosing one of them. Below are few things I've read about them.
Xamarin is more like native, but It needs more effort to make it cross platform.
Flutter is still in beta, but Its backed by google, So it can be future. + it has performance issues and it lacks many important libs.
React native uses Javascript. and It's kinda less native.
So, I'm confused to choose in of them. I need to choose the one with many libraries and is good at performance, and it must have less effort for making it for another platform.10 -

I have Keratoconus and thinking of getting Cross-linking sometime next month.8 -
Msal.js. I give it 3/10..
The docs are duplicated, and in various states of out of date. Half the library seems to be undocumented based on how many edge case bugs I've hit, it offers a popup login but you have to have a set specified white list of urls you can launch the popup from which makes a popup login pointless...
Ontop of that my colleagues shat the bed on it and fucked the whole implementation including the azure b2c setup... We do not even have a backend app listed in the azure b2c apps. The redirect also won't work if you don't instantiate an object in a hidden iframe of your own website that fetches a token... This does not make life easy when you use a SPA framework and you have already implemented a whole pipeline abstracting the creation of this object behind layers dependency injection.. Nice.
After sifting through endless shit I finally have a solution. What a week. -

I know it's an age old question, but how does everyone do their cross browser testing? Im looking for a way to automate this (ie. Browserstack)2

Hey there everyone what do you think of using React Native for a complex Cross Platform app with location and stuff like that.4 -
I thought having to test my website on different browsers was bad enough, its a few hours to close of work and I still cant figure out sending a html email because of cross-client compatibility. Waiting on the day when this will be history.

can you give me/point me to some good example problem/exercise for multithreading? as in, something that's small in scope, but actually requires dealing with most of the multithreading issues & complications? race conditions, synchronization, locks, shared memory access, cross-thread calls/callbacks, etc?2 -
After I graduate with my programming degree I want to get a little more exposure to the hardware side of tech beyond my minimal knowledge picked up over the years
No idea how yet but that’s a bridge to cross a little closer to July2 -
If you’re not using Chrome or Safari, watch out for this new exploit!

Client wants an app compatible with IOS, Android and desktop. I only have experience with Android and desktop.
Would you guys recommend anything I should look into to make this process easier, without having to develop 3 separate versions for each platform?7 -
It feels weird after seeing that the most frustrated cross-platform framework has such a big ecosystem:

Anyways, I need to hook myself up with flutter as I see it as a better alternative to React Native. -
I'd like to ask peoples opinions on building cross platform apps. So basically I'm on windows, and these insatiably annoying project leads (I fell for the "you code make me an app" one) want it to be cross platform. My first thought was PWAs, but then read that apple are dicks and some of the most important features are not actually supported (#!@?). So then it's ionic or Cordova, but who likes CSS? Or Angular 2? And for a native experience, I'd want to follow both iOS and android design patterns in the same codebase which is way beyond my pay grade. React native comes from Facebook, so I already hate it. Should I just build an android app and cross the iOS bridge later or build a not very native feeling, not vertically centred cross platform Cordova thing? Anyone who's had experience using Cordova care to comment on their successes / failures?13

I want to learn c# to build a mobile app with xamarin and a website with asp.net core. I have some programing experience and have build some meh apps. What should I use
Head First C#, 4th Edition
C# 9 and .NET 5 - Modern Cross-Platform Development - Fifth Edition
C# Fundamentals by Scott Allen on Pluralsight
C# 9 and .NET 5 - Modern Cross-Platform Development - Fifth Edition teaches what I want to learn but the Xamarin section seems a bit short. C# Fundamentals by Scott Allen on Pluralsight was recommended a lot to beginners online and I can always learn Xamarin from Microsoft Learn12 -
Idea - possibly a bad one - visual studio extension that hits a database to display possible values to supply as a method argument. With caching of course..
I'm thinking along the lines of permissions in a database that at some point have to be hard coded against code to enforce them. Stuff like that.
Possible or beyond stupid?7 -
So I'm target multiple platforms with one of my c++ projects and on one of the platforms I the window manager is quite different, and one of the libraries can't be used. Thats fine for my needs, I'm just wondering what the typical way to allow for these differences is. Basically currently I've created 2 "main" files that have preprocessor code to only use he one that's right for the platform by having ifdefs at the beginning of each, I've kinda followed that methodology for the other files that are totally platform specific also. Is there a better way to go about this? Currently using msvc for windows compilation and a gcc-esqu compiler for one of the other platforms, where the compile command is built by a home made build tool.

Weex seems under documented vs Cordova and React Native. What do you guys prefer for making cross platform mobile apps?4

We've been asked to develop an app, normally we counter-pitch the 'web' prefix because it means one codebase, but they don't want that so...any suggestions for a decent cross-platform framework? App is just text and video, nothing too taxing for the device.10

I've been learning Flutter this month from scratch and coming from a background of both Java and Python, Dart pretty much feels like a mule to me . It's a cross between both of them...1

Is Pokemon GO programmed using cross-platform technologies or is it natively coded to both Android in Java and in Swift for iOS?5

Also cross platform (you set flags in win via a / but whatever)1
