My first dev job was the worst! The woman in charge of the building was always on my ass! She didn't really understand what programming was and didn't like that I smoked in my office... Then I moved out of my mom's house and got my own place9

This is “Güero” (Blondie), the only cat I know who can use a computer.
I was at university. I couldn’t take my laptop to class because it was too huge, so I had to use remote connection.
One day, I connected to my laptop from the library, and everything was ok except that I couldn’t move the mouse! 😱 It was like somebody on the other side was using the mousepad. There was nobody in my house, just Blondie.
My solution? I called to my house. The cat heard the ring and left my laptop. It sounds stupid but, believe it or not, it worked! 😂
Blondie, the informatic cat.13
When I left the house to work abroad my mom called me.
Mom: “every time you touch the computer things change!”
Me: “I haven’t touched it in months, what’s the problem?”
Mom: “my google has changed, please put it like before!”
The same phone call, day after day, I couldn’t figure what she meant and she was getting pissed off.
Then I realized, it was just the google doodle...7
So my actual job is being a nurse at the local hospital, with coding being just a hobby. However, the way some IT–Related things are treated here are just mind-blowing. Here are some examples:
Issue: Printer is not recognized by network anymore due to not being properly plugged in
Solution: Someone has to tell the house technician, if the house technician is currently not available, ask his assistant who only works part time and like twice a week. House technician took the printer (God knows why), came back 2 days later and plugged it back in.
Issue: Printer 1 of 2 on ICU has run out of ink and since all computers default to printer 1, nobody can print.
Solution: Call the house technician, blah blah, house technician comes, takes ink cartridge of printer 2 and puts it into printer 1.
Issue: Public WiFi is broken, can be connected to but internet access is missing. Probably config issue as a result of a recent blackout.
Solution: Buy a new router, spend 5 days configuring it and complain about how hard networking is.
Issue: Computer is broken, needs to be exchanged with a new one, but how do we transfer the data?
Solution: Instead of just keeping the old hard drive, make a 182GB backup, upload it to the main file server and then download it again on the new computer.
Issue: Nurse returns from vacation, forgot the password to her network account.
Solution: Call the technician who then proceeds to open a new account, copies all the files from the old one and tells her to pick an easier password this time. She chooses "121213".12
people who use a VPN to browse the internet because of privacy concerns but then sit in a house full of Alexa devices13
> Find new remote job that pays six figures.
> Only person in the house with income.
> Still not left alone to fucking work.
JUST LET ME FUCKING WORK!25
My wife took the kids to the mall.
I work from home.
me: fuck yeah, I'll be able to work now, since I focus a lot more when there's a lot of silence in the house, looking forward to this coding session
me: *takes the fattest 2 hour nap*
I guess I was tired...8
Some do it with coffee, some with tea, some in their house, some in a cafe, but I do it in a shawarma restaurant while eating a shawarma!18
That awkward moment when you don’t want to come out of your room because there are strangers in your house.6
Wanted to download a torrent overnight at my granparebts house. My grandmother tyrned off the internet at the right time in the morning
Note: i started ut about 3 weeks ago25
CIO: what kind of web server do you want for your dev environment? WordPress?
Me: Uhm, Linux centos running apa-
CIO: whoa that's dangerous you need to think of the people who are going to support this.
CIO: we're going to pick something and stick with it.
FML company is just starting to do in house dev. CIO is heavily involved and knows more than I do... My life is a Dilbert comic strip11
Portugal is burning
500+ fires active
31 confirmed deads in 1 day...
A large one almost reached my house, saved by two man with construction machines. Still houses burned, gás bottles exploding like shotguns at a distance...
It's the end off the summer...
And now im at work, a new fire started close by...27
In 2004 my mom decided to put Ethernet cables into the walls of our house, which is very awesome. Now i found out that the're Cat6!6
A friend of mine has a PC that was overheating. His solution: Dumping the entire mobo and components in a box with Olive oil.
+ Decrease heat by 15℃
+ Low cost solution
- Hard to maintain components
- Dust can't be cleaned from the box
- House smells like an Italian kitchen 😂7
one day my dad brings home an old blade server from work and a centos distro. we set it up in the garage of our hot Florida house and he gave me his old perl programming books and showed me a few things. I was 12 or 13. that summer I moved my bed to the garage and barely slept as I learned everything I could. I've never looked back.2
Wife has literally the best IT job in the city. First wall of miners up and running. From my previous post of the 8 card boxes to this -- stacks of them and more stacks of bitmains. Fuck I wish these were ours. I know one IT honey that's getting chased around the house tonight cause she's sending me pics like this:11
Well i will be damned.
600Mbps/s optic internet coming in few months to my house.
And best ?
20$ per month.
Stepmom told me I take up the most bandwidth in the house because I have 3 monitors. ATT guy said the problem was I forwarded a Minecraft port on our router. Am I the only person who knows anything about routers?!4
Radio Shack store closed near my house. Had a huge fire sale. Electric circuit components were 90% off.
My wife thought I'd gone insane when I got home with two huge bags full of LEDs, resistors, switches, IR sensors, photocells, capacitors, bridge rectifiers, a spare breadboard, a pair of helping hands, etc.
My only regret is that I didn't catch the fire sale in time to grab all their Arduinos.3
What is a pointer?
A descriptive and ELI5 answer found on Reddit:
You have a house.
When you’re outside, and you want to go home, you don’t make another house right where you are, because it’s too big for you to carry around or take apart.
So you carry a piece of paper or store on your phone the address of your house. Now you always know exactly how to find your house so that you can go home.
The piece of paper or your phone is a variable.
The variable contains an address (a reference) to your house.
You can make a copy of this piece of paper and hand it out to your friends when you invite them over, instead of building each friend a copy of your house.
You can have an address book filled with pages, where each page is an address (i.e., an array of pointers). Each page you turn (each index you increment) goes to the directly next address-containing variable.
Now if you cut the address book in half along its height, and then attach the lower half behind the upper half, then you have a book with smaller pages but more pages.
You can store phone numbers in this, and even if it’s the same total size, you have double the number of pages and double the number of phone numbers (if you store one number on each page).
Now, since the pointers to home-addresses are different from pointers to phone-numbers, turning the page in an address book (increment pointer by 1) moves forward by one address.
But turning the page in the phone book (incrementing pointer by 1) leads you to the next phone number, even if you technically turned only “half a page”.
That’s how pointer arithmetic works.
A guy breaks into your house and start slapping your face with a huge C programming book for 5 minutes until you bleed top quality code from your nose.
Well this is what I was going to comment to the "learn C in 5 minutes app" rant, but can't find it anymore.2
how many soccer balls can fit in your house
Me i dont play soccer
...(looks at me)
Oh yeah. So....14
Moved in to new house, finally have myself a room for an office. Started to deck it out and the wife asks if we can find matching chairs, one for her, one for me...
It's more than an office, its supposed to be my man/dev cave!11
Found this in my dad's house.
Looks as if he didn't used it.
Any one know how to install this somehow? (Even though it is impossible, probably)36
Some of my friends and me stayed the night in a small house. Everyone except me drank beer and now they are all sleeping while I am sitting right next to the socket in a corner listening to music and reading through the documentation of java.
This describes my life pretty well.
Software developer (noun) : IT guy.
Individual who will know every issue you have with any electronic device in your house. He'll fix it.
Friendly reminder, please check the fire alarms in your house.
Buy a fire extinguisher if you don't have one.14
A friend sent me this in the morning:
“By convention, type names such as String or Int (or Dog or Cat) start with a capital letter; variable names start with a small letter. Do not violate this convention. If you do, your code might still compile and run just fine, but I will personally send agents to your house to remove your kneecaps in the dead of night.”

WHAT THAT FUCK
I PLUGGED IN MY LAPTOP CHARGER TO THE WALL AND A HUGE SPARK APPEARED AND THE ENTIRE ELECTRICITY OF THE HOUSE FELL8
Zuckerburg just got finished building his own Jarvis-like A.I. to control his house, in under a year. What am I doing with my life6
I'm going to a friend's house because his computer won't boot. In case I don't return, please clear my git stash. No one needs to see that kind of crap.1
My son is remote learning, 5th grade.
When the teacher calls on one of the student's named Alexa and asks a question... some kids with Alexa devices in their house get the answer for free....10
I am a student. A Geospatial Engineering student. I made a demo Cordova app mapping incident spots on OSM., now my fellow undergrads think I can hack NSA, program a satellite, build all their dream websites and apps. The College Department wants me to lead an in-house photogrammetric programmable drone project. If they ask I'll say yes... yes I can! shit.😂5
So, the house next door to me is being renovated into half a dozen apartments. This process has been ongoing for like 4 years of here-and-there houseflipper failboating, and if I had to guess, 3 owners worth of this fuckery.
The latest shitheel trying to polish this turd into something saleable has had it sit partially covered with plastic for months, mostly getting rained on. One crew came by last week and put half the thermal shielding up before something happened and they left. Then half of it fell off the house, into my yard. Nice person that I am I gathered it all up and left it in the various excavated pools of water on their property in which I can only imagine they are busily raising farm to table mosquitoes for the local market.
FF to today and I see a crew pull up to the house and start nailing plywood to the side of the house with no thermal pad underneath it. Which is a legit code violation and a mold hazard, but yolo amirite? I chat up some of the guys and find out that they were scheduled to install the plywood today (apparently he'd run out of money for the nice modular siding they used on the back half) and the owner didn't give a shit if the rest of the work was done. Meanwhile shit is still falling off the house onto my house, but also wgaf. 🚬
Tl;Dr the people trying to flip the house next to mine were obviously IT managers in a previous life.6
I started to work in a new project for a house architect, basically a management system for his studio. Well, guess what? Twenty years ago he programmed some sort of software using BASIC, and of course that means he knows exactly how software works!
Worst kind of stakeholder, like going to the doctor and telling them how to diagnose, because you used a thermostat once.3
Got invited to a friend's house for supper.he asks me ,why don't I see you online on Facebook these days
And do you have an Instagram account
Me:yeah but have never used it actively
Me:yeah but also don't use it actively ,in fact haven't logged on for months or even years
Friend:wow.u live under a rock.what social networks do u use actively
Friend:wat da hell are those.
Me: social networks which u would most probably get roasted on4
To all my fellow devs.
Do NOT deploy this weekend unless you want to debug in your parent's house in your old bedroom at midnight 😅4
Hi devranters, I come to you for your wisdom...
Today a job offer was given to me in Poland with 2500 to 3000 euros after taxes + house + house expenditure + montlhy flights to my home country.
What do you think?39
Him: you know, I can recommend you a book, if you're into reading?
Me: well, I don't have that much time to read, I prefer online tutorials
(We're interrupted at that point)
(Later at dinner)
Me: which book were you gonna recommend me btw
Him: there's this psychology book I'm reading...
2017 was a dream come true literally.Long story short, I quit my job of 6 years as a PE teacher, studied Android Development through Udacity's Nanodegree program, moved my wife and kids out of our house (we were renting), moved in with my in-laws, Trusted God, learned how to build Android apps, applied at numerous tech companies, got offered 2 jobs, got hired as an Android Developer in Tennessee in December making almost more than twice I did as a teacher. My first day of work is January 8th. What a year it's been!6
If someone asks me how to hack software, I answer:
'Well, basically it's just like searching for open doors of a unknown house you want to get in.' 😎
Usually the answer disappoints everyone. Then I add:
'Why so surprised? Would you leave your main door open, if you want to store something securely in your house?'
I love those disappointed faces from time to time. 😋1
Boss asked me to work the weekend today...
Told him I have to buy some shoes and do work around the house so I can't.
In reality I'll be doing a personal project and prettying up my CV ofcourse!
P.S. this is for a project he has had me rewrite 3 times so far.5
Have children and build a house. You will forget what you enjoyed doing in your free time. Because you will not have any more!
P. S. I could have attached my github activity graph instead, but that is even more embarrassing 😭8
Introduction to graphics
Lecturer says "this is a very practical course. In fact I think we should have a practical exam"
All students agree. He would sort out that matter.
Meanwhile he taught us how to making shapes in java, then a house, then a game...
And the exam was for us to make a building where a user can walk through the building using the arrow keys...
What fun we had. We got out marks...and everybody did well!!!!1
As some of you know I start at my new job on friday. I don't have a development or computer related job, so guess what my first task is?
I was at my boss/friends house last friday night and he was like 'I know you're good with computers. So can you install the printer in my bureau?'
Now I can absolutely relate to all the printer rants.
When your ISP tells you they will transfer your internet connection to your new house in one month and they give you 10GBs on your mobile phone.
And I'm like "Ummm okay, this might be enough for a day or so... ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ "4
I thought that o reily books were a some sort of meme, but then i found this in my house while cleaning4
*notices coffee is cold, puts it on stove with flame burner on low, to warm up*
*sits back down, goes back to coding*
*hears fizzing popping sounds... coffee overflows and boils*
FUCK - every other day for the past month ,every single time... lol3
In elementary my teacher gave me bad mark, because instead of painting house in Paint, I was trying to code6
"Since your house is just a mile to our office you need to come to the office."
DO YOU NOT UNDERSTAND THE SITUATION WE ARE IN???4
So... Been making a script so that my tmux layout on my tty only hard drive displays the weather.
Apparently there is a place called 'Shit' in the world, and there's some 'Patchy rain possible' in 'Shit'.
'Shit' also seems to be 15 °C, and have 3km/h winds. Not sure which direction, but I hope nowhere near my house.7
Today, my dad can finally ditch his iPhone 4 which is passed down from my eldest sis to my mom and to my dad, all thanks to my brother-in-law getting a Samsung Galaxy J7 on Black Friday.
Finally. No more Apple bullshit in my house!! NO FUCKING MORE!!! *insert hysterical laughter* GOODBYE STUPID 20-PIN CHARGER CABLE~ GOODBYE ITUNES~ GOODBYE ICLOUD~ FUCK YOU!!!7
We are taking over an Android application source code from an external company to continue development in-house...
I present to you floateger:
(one of many crimes the previous developer has commited)15
I went to sleep at 7 fucking AM.
Mom kept knocking on my door until I woke up. Apparently I am the only one in this fucking house who can give directions to guests coming home.
I mean I feel like a fucking Gollum right now. Fuuuuuuuuuuucccccckkkkk !!! 😠😠😠😡😡😡6
You never realize quite how many devices you have in your house that connect to WiFi until you set up a new network and have to reconnect all of them 😂7
We had given my mom a phone recently, I found out that she never used it for the reason we gave it to her, and that is to be accessible whenever she leaves the house, Instead she kept the phone at our house and when in the house be always connected to the WiFi and watch WhatsApp videos and stuff that her old college/School friends sent. I had to give her a lecture for half an hour as to why she wasn't using the phone for what it is intended to do and threatened her to disconnect from the WiFi if she did this again. Damn! This teenage stuff again.7
So I've just been evicted, apparently the house I have a room in is being repossessed.
Now living in a tin hut in the middle of a field. Loving life, life loving me.9
Unsurpisingly, an in-house client reported a visual bug in IE. So I candidly asked him which version of browser he was running. He told me with confidence: 11. As I couldn't reproduce the bug I asked him where he found the version number. He answered: "below the laptop on a sticker".
Well, it happened to be the year of construction of the computer.2
Few months back, one of my good but non-dev friend came to visit me.
He: I've done a website in HTML. Can you help me make it responsive.
Without a second thought, I agreed.
*Opened the file in editor*
<tables> <tables> <tables> <tables>
I kicked him out of my house without a second thought.3
Spiced rum, kahlua, grand mariner, chocolate liquor, milk, ice. Tastes like house paint, and not in the good way like protein bars. Do not recommend. Better with more milk, but still meh.
Spiced rum, kahlua, triple sec, milk, ice. Tastes like orange milk with coffee. Pretty nice.
Spiced rum, ice. Tastes like a faint memory of heaven. Amazing grace, hallelujah.13
I've been dragged out of the house by my parents cos it's bank holiday.... I'm now in a place called a Guar-denn center looking at green stuff??! Reminds me of grass from Skyrim but it's too detailed..... And it's sunny too....
And I'm 30... FML3
I love it when people make a mistake and break something on their website then act as tho the are losing millions of pounds every second like they are going to have to remortgage their house "life is over", if it's not fixed in 30 seconds the world will end!
Then you look at their website and you think they probably have about two users every week, and the website looks like it has been built by a one armed monkey. Delusional2
My dads latest wisdom:
"Back in the days there were two types of people that whisper to themselves while walking down the street:
1. people that are building a house,
2. crazy people"
** looks at me ***
"... and in the recent times programmers are special category"3
Not really tech, but...
I used to handwrite a lot of fiction in several notebooks that I kept over the years. House went through a bad flood in 2013, basement where the notebooks were stored got full up, lost all the notebooks 😭
Now I don't even have a basement2
You know you’ve been putting in too many extra hours when you try to use your house key on the office lock and it takes you 30 seconds to realize what’s wrong...2
I get kicked out of my fucking house because my house”mates” just pissed off without paying rent or finding someone to replace them in time.
Great.. really fucking awesome.
There’s nothing else available in my town and I have time till the end of the month.
Thanks for that asshole.
Never, ever sharing a house / apartment again.
I’m better off doing my own thing.
Fucking lonely as I’m used to be but at least there’s no one to stab me in the back.1
if there's one thing I love more than coding, it's using metaphors to explain to other people why they're not "getting it". like the all famous contractor:
"yeah I know you need 5 months to build my house, but can you do it in 2. Also, I'm going to pay half. Oh, and when the house is done, could you also add a cellar?"
any more good metaphors out there?4
Infinite loop in real life :/
X: Where is your house?
Y: Near Ramesh's house.
X: Where is Ramesh's house?
Y: Near my house.8
When some born-in-the-90s chode claims that linux is bullshit because you might sometimes have to use the keyboard on the command line, I set that motherfucker's house on fire.4
Just signed a contract as a full-time web developer at Mid-Norway's largest productions house.
Prior 6 months as an apprentice, no prior formal education, self-taught since the age of 12, and I'm 20 now.
I see myself needing a stress ball in the future3
New neighbours, with more vehicles than a circus..
First they block the garage, but they do move their vehicles when asked.
Then they block the driveway..
I keep saying to architects, don't have just one parking space per bloody house for goodness sake, you need 6 per house !
Another reason to move..
Ring, ring, ring, ring ring..
"Hello, what idiot is ringing me at 3am!"
"Yes, this your neighour, I'm going to be home in 5 minutes, could you move your van from my driveway entrance, and your car from my garage entrance, thank you"
Isn't really that convenient..5
You have to think this is like building a house, so you have to spend time doing some serious thinking, so you come up with a (somewhat) good vision of what you want and what could possible change in the future... let me give you an example: let's say we were building a house and we are very close to finishing it, so you come up with the great idea of putting the kitchen where the living room is, and the bathroom in the second floor where the TV room was... if that happens, then I would tell you to go fuck yourself.
See dear client... there are pipes, wiring, and all sorts of stuff you don't see, that makes a house be a house... apply the same logic to building software and we'll be on the same page more often.
PS: I appreciate your business2
I'm starting my new job in 10 days, but I don't have the proper internet access to feel really confident about it. My parents want me to move out of the house so they don't have to accommodate for my new job. I'm getting chemo in a few weeks. I'm really sick of fighting shit. Trusting in the plan though.5
Crazy weather in here. There is a little sandstorm. It's pretty windy, even the outdoor advertisement letters are moving and the sky is brown :v
The thing is that, in order to go back home, I must walk 4 or 5 blocks (from the place one of my co-workers can leave me), but with this wind I'm afraid of getting sand in my eyes (I don't have glasses). Another option is to take an Uber to my house, but it takes too long to arrive to the office.
What can I do? Do I take the Uber or do I run to my house?6
That one horrendous in-house legacy application that should be ditched, but no one is brave enough to start building replacement from scratch ... Every company has one.5
Woo-hoo!!! Yoda is in da house! Or to say it in his own words: "Truly wonderful, the mind of a child is."1
Was busy today doing some house work. Everything was normal till afternoon.
Me thinking of using laptop noticed that there was no laptop
My office laptop and another bag was stolen from my home .
It had most of the production details and source code. Running behind police for help now.
Informed my boss too about this incident.
Will update on what happens tomorrow in office.
Fuck that person who stole my office laptop and destroyed my Peace.8

Samsung Note 9's commercial background song contains the lyrics "our house is burning"
hmm maybe thats whats gonna happen when you purchase it and it explodes in your face
Note 7 anyone?2
Little anecdote from my in-house it:
"Our passwords are safe because we change them every 3 months and they have to contain uppercases, lowercases, numbers and special characters. 6 digit length is enough and can't be hacked."9
I know... I know... We're not kids anymore...
But come on there just has to be a group of Harry Potter lovers in this "geeky" community.
So which house do you see yourself in?
Me, myself and I = Ravenclaw all the way
*this post was shamefully inspired by the description of @theNox*32
Continued from previous post.
The man with hoodie walked down a dark alley. At distance, a house which looked haunted stood. As he entered the house he sighed a relief. Once inside, he descends to the basement where an old computer sat. He turned on the computer and smiled. The screen showed a prompt. With fews keystrokes, a series of scripts begin to execute. Finally at the bottom, a text blinked.
The CPU was recovered from rubble and brought to General's office as per his order. It was connected to a power source and it started to boot. A prompt showed up. A man in suit, suggested perhaps it expected a login. The General sat on his chair smoking a cigar thinking on what action must be taken next.
While men in suit discussed about the CPU, someone plugged in a LAN cable. The General who was lost in thought, saw this from corner of his. A moment passed. General sprang from his chair, hurling his cigar to the floor. As men in suits, looked at the General's display of athletic behavior they sensed the tension. Everyone turned to the CPU now connected to LAN now.
Far way, the screen on hooded man computer showed. "Connected".
A series of scripts started to execute.
Cold wind was all that could be heard out side the General's office building and the house, where hooded man sat in the dark.1
When my boss acknowledged my effort in creating an in house scripting language. Makes me feel really really proud! 😁9
my dad's excavating some land so he can build a house, and he found a HDD buried out in the middle of fucking nowhere (50+ miles from nearest town in the middle of 10-house "village") -- no case, no wrap, just the drive. It works, but when we read it it was zeroed save for a few bad sectors that didn't take. It also makes a horrible cricket-like noise (https://picosong.com/w8qYn but much louder in reality, shitty phone mic) and it worries me.16
our tester arguing with software house about blocker severity bug
SH: "No, this bug is not possible. It's possible only when you are logged as admin in other tab"
T: "I managed to replicate it in another browser in private mode"
SH: "But you can't replicate the bug now"
T: "True that I don't know steps to replicate it and it occurs just sometimes... Let me check right now"
T: "Okay, I managed to replicate it right now in private mode in other browser on normal user account"
SH: "Because you are admin"
They are pretending to be idiots or just are?6
I have to write an xml configuration parser for an in-house data acquisition system that I've been tasked with developing.
I hate doing string parsing in C++... Blegh!18
Rant: Wifi in Italian AirBnB, They use 3 wifi repeater to get internet from one house to the next, I guess you can imagine the speed3
Slept in this morning, left the house 20 minutes late, got to work an hour and a half late.
Oh sweet mother of god.
What is the NBN Connection i have attached to my router?
It goes "give me all your data... NOW"
I'm not used to such speed in my house, excuse me while I watch my porn collection in 4K!5
So a non programmer friend of mine needed an in house time tracking tool and found one on codecanyon. He bought it for 40$ and asked me if I could provide him some Webspace to host it until they deploy it in house. I said yes and took a look at the code as some stuff wasn't really working. All I can say is "wtf is that pile of crap". Nothing works, it looks like it's written by a first grader and it's UI looks like it was assembled by a chimp (well actually I think chimpanzees could make a better UI). Now I am interested the progress of rewriting that tool for him and I am almost done with all functions that thing should have and even more after 6 hours. I wonder if all stuff on codecanyon has the same quality and if, I am considering this as bonus income...5
Can we please eliminate React?
I was interviewing lately and the lady asked if I knew react, I said no and I don't want to. She then asked what the hell I use for front end... As if react is the only thing you can use... Ehm hello we still have vanilla JS and jQuery in the house. Which are better, faster and easier to use for like +90% of all Web projects out there...26
The power went out at my house. I live in the middle of nowhere, so I don't even have enough service to load the rant feed most of the time... I have no idea if this will post. What am I to do? I'll have to go outside or something? :-/1
When the house is one fire, and all the devs are running in circles, trying to fix it, and you overhear the PM (while prepearing your 8th cup of coffee) complaining on their phone, about how hard he/she has to work, because the devs fucked up... priceless.2
We developed this website plus custom CMS for an university. I told them that we could host the entire system and take care of it for an annual fee but they decided to host it in house because security. The IT guy didn't ask for my public key, he sent me a password. By email. Less than 8 characters long. Only recognizable abbreviated words. And a dot.3
Well my home office is a proper mess currently. It isn't so much an office as a corner desk in the child's nursery, but house hunting went on hold.
It features the likes of my devrant ducky, crazy aarons thinking putty, a stuffed gnu, and a galileo thermometer among other paraphernalia; also a plastic goat that screams when I push down on it. That last one is a huge help to me these last few weeks.1
Yesterday my cousin called me to fix his scanner, he said that it didn't work anymore. When i went to his house to check it out, the scanner worked properly! In the 99% of cases, the problem is between the device and the chair2
Oh my God I fucking hate humidity
I've been without power for over 40 hours now. It's no big deal, but the fucking humidity makes it so fucking hot on my house and every fucking building.
It's about a nice and cool 70° f outside, but I'm still drenched in fucking sweat. Hopefully the power will be on soon.1
Levels of tech awareness:
0: Doesnt use tech at all
1: Uses tech only for work
2: Uses it for films/gaming
3: Has alexa/google home
4: Uses smart home system
5: Has a loaded shotgun under the pillow, which is used to shoot the only piece of tech in the house (a printer from 2004) when it makes an unexpected noise!3
It was sometime in 2009. I kept seeing these ads for something called Bitcoin. I had some extra cash, so I decided to buy $100 worth. I had my debit card out, and was trying to figure out how it worked. Got distracted with a work email, and decided to put it off until later. I forgot all about it until around 2013 when I read about some guy that bought a house using $70 worth of Bitcoin he bought in 2009.2
This didn't happen to me, but to an acquaintance: She had the only copy of her PHD thesis stored on her laptop. The thesis was due in a couple of weeks. She has to move house, and used her backpack with said laptop in it to prop open a door. Someone nicked the laptop. $all_data == 0;
dad: yeah sure , that's why no laptop is working well in this house
all three laptops are older than 4 years and use 5400 rpm hdds and also are full of my parent's stuff.
A friend of my mom asks me transfer some files from her hard disk to her pendrive because I am supposedly *good with computers*.
As an obedient son, I go to her house to do the needful.
I switch on the laptop and plug both right in. At this point, I am wondering if this really my life is for.
Lost in my thoughts, I accidentally format her hard disk. Now I freak out. Seeing no possible way out, I remove both and say her work is done.
I quickly leave the house and never look back. To this day, I have never gone back to her house.2
My biggest distraction at coding are my parents.
I still live in there house and it's really comfy.
But whenever I code the always come into my room with something random like "my phone is not working" or "how can I delete this?"
I love my parents and Im glad that I can help but always get off where I was after 😂7
Fucking hell my ISP gave me a router and a modem (was expecting a modem that is a router, like is at my parents house with the same ISP).
The router is absolute dog shit. My connection drops every 5 minutes or so, and sometimes every minute (give or take 10 seconds). And the signal struggles in my bedroom, even though the router is about 10 feet away from me.
What the fuck piece of garbage is this?
House search has never been as painful as 2021. Not only the websites are shit at stopping agencies from outright lying on their websites, but also they can't even give you a quicker browsing experience. All the click click clicks just to view one fucking option. Duplicate advertises, photos from "a similar apartment", no 3D showing, no blueprints, etc. , and all in all, awful experience all around that nobody cares to fix. 😒8
So today I was offered a job at the company as a junior frontend developer. Digging a little deeper I found out that they don't have any other frontend devs in house.
So the job offer translated to:
- senior skillset
- senior workload
- junior wage
Best part is that I was freelancing for them in past and was helping to establish some of the workflow a year ago for more money they offered now.
Thanks, no thanks, I guess?4
I got a degree in music performance. But at the end of it, I decided that I enjoyed the finer things in life, like having a house and, you know, food.
So I struggled through some entry level jobs until folks noticed I had potential, and a kindly manager paired me with our database developer. The rest is history!1
"Did you manage to reproduce this issue in-house?"
Yes, off course we managed to reproduce your fucking random reboot issue that happen to two in thousand customers and might happend just after boot of after several hours or days or not at all when you, as you said yourself, were doing nothing. While at it we also turned lead to gold, water to wine and resurected Elvis (although he is a little bit grumpy and mumbles something about brains).
Decided to swap ISP.
Arranged that my new ISP started today and my old one would end next week so I had some wiggle room for issues.
Today my old ISP just disconnected my house in the middle of the day.
Then my new ISP failed to connect me and _might_ have it fixed tomorrow.
Looking forward to working remotely over 5G...6
We have Jira to keep track of bugs and allow users to inform issue with our in-house software. One fucker created ticket, "Hi Guys, I cannot sign-in to Skype business". He even put the screenshot.
What the fuck he expected us to do. Everyday have to deal with low mentality peasants.3
I worked at a software house that made web based applications. Management in secret spent a lot of money outsourcing their new website. The outsourced company made basically what could have been a static website but with their own massive proprietary cms behind it for no reason. It ran really slowly and used no technology we used in house. Needless to say I was so annoyed when I saw it.
Part of the idea they had for this thing was to attract new developers to work there, the disconnect between management and reality was so big you could nearly fit their incompetence in it.2
Why the fuck management keep outsourcing entire platforms for in-house use if we have a fucking dev team...
Those platforms are constantly having contract issues and one we recently rewrote from scratch and is waaay better than the one they fucking paid another company to do....3
All is well in 2020 and claiming today will be my year.
1 updated my curriculum vitae and send my resignation love letter
2 hopefully be hired in a stable company and earn enough that can suffice my needs and wants as I moved out from my big sis home. Thank you ^_^
3 move into my long awaited own house for a couple of weeks. Thanks patience and perseverance ^_^
4 self study for freelance projects
5 settle down
When I was in college I was working on a game in Java using Slick2D. My folks were away on holiday so I had the ability to drink in the house (I was over 18). I worked on this coursework piece whilst drinking.
The next morning I went into college with my work and found that it had a massive memory leak that was included by the work that I’d done whilst under the influence.
The issue was fixed (quite easily tbh) but everyone in my class reminded me for the rest of the year...5
Just got fired from a second dev house in a row due to staff reduction and lack of projects. I should have chosen to be a carpenter instead...3
Adventures with house IT
I'm currently experimenting with PowerShell but my scripts won't run even though I've got every local permission. The error message indicates it's a GPO problem.
"No problem" le me thinks and calls IT hotline.
After 2 incompetent and unprofessional technicians i've still got no solution. I'm waiting for the second tech to call back because he "needed some time to get to know PowerShell" (he is a trained and certified SysAdmin).
During my call he couldn't decide if it was a GPO problem or not.
And this is just one story of their incompetence...9
there is nothing more annoying than plugging the usb cable to the real android device for debugging, but if you move that cable 1mm the whole fucking connection breaks, the beep sounds of connected/disconnected phone rings, the fucking laptop explodes, phone explodes, dick explodes, the house gets on fire, my dog gets on fire, i run out of house while burning in flames alive and the whole house fuckin explodes like a nuclear bomb2
Beware: Here lies a cautionary tale about shared hosting, backups, and -goes without saying- WordPress.
1. Got a call from a client saying their site presented an issue with a third-party add-on. The vendor asked us to grant him access to our staging copy.
2. Their staging copy, apparently, never got duplicated correctly because, for security reasons, their in-house dev changed the name of the wp-content folder. That broke their staging algo. So no staging site.
3. In order to recreate the staging site, we had to reset everything back to WP defaults. Including, for some reason, absolute paths inside the database. A huge fucking database. Because WordPress.
4. Made the changes directly in a downloaded sql file. Shared hosting, obviously, had an upload limit smaller to the actual database.
5. Spent half an hour trying to upload table by table to no avail.
6. In-house uploads a new, fixed database with the help of the shared hosting provider.
7. Database has the wrong path. Again.
8. In-house performs massive Find and Replace through phpMyAdmin on the production server.
9. Obviously, MySQL crashes instantly and the site gets blocked for over 3 hours for exceeding shared hosting limits.
10. Hosting provider refuses to accept this was caused by such a stupid act and says site needs to be checked because queries are too slow.
11. We are gouging our eyeballs as we see an in-house vs. hosting fight unfold. So we decide to watch a whole Netflix documentary in between.
12. Finally, the hosting folds and enables access to the site, which is obvi not working because, you know, wrong paths.
13. Documentary finishes. We log in again, click restore from backup. Go to bed. Client phones to bless us. Client’s in-house dev probably looking for a cardboard box to pack his stuff first thing in the morning. \_(ツ)_/¯
Uni shut down.
So, what's my plan for this unplanned in-house vacation, you ask? Idk. Probably just staying in bed. Maybe bother with finishing all the damn annoying books I've left unread. Yay.
Also, FYI, about 99 years before covid19 broke out, the Spanish flu wiped out millions. We'll be fine. Lol.7
Today is release day...big sprint (complete UI redesign) ... Already 1 and half month late ... fingers crossed (specially for in house clients)3
Leave the house for 30 fucking minutes and the courier attempts to deliver my new notebook just then---after four days in transit. And, of course, they don't deliver at the weekend.
I swear the guy was camped outside my house waiting to fuck me over.1
So I recently moved into an student house. Its really awesome but the only thing thats frustrating as fuck is the internet. Its like 50 - 200 kbs. I litterally type in slow motion over ssh. It stops working every few days and the dhcp range is to small :(. Not like my landlord can't afford better internet. There are like 50 people in this building and I think we have the basic abbonement.
Luckily I get my own internet next thuesday. I can't wait.4
Windows restrict us from going out of the box (house), and allow us to see the world only through the window, sitting in.4
*tentatively watching movie*
Some family standing in front of a house.
Kid asks: dad, what is this?
It took me way to long to realize that the kids name is Paige and the place is their new house. I hate it when that happens.1
So I go for a run for the first time, well, ever. I put my keychain in my pocket and I'm off with my headphones on. Come back home I FUCKING LOST MY WHOLE KEYCHAIN. Key to my house, my apartment, the garage remote, .. fucking dogshit man. Tried to track it down by going down the same path twice but no luck so now my only hope is the police but what are the odds :/3
When you work with other developers who would, for any feature, small or large, plop in a new library or framework of which they will utilize 1% of... I'm talking about things that we could develop in house in less than a day and have significantly less code bloat... and when you tell them this they smile, nod, and say yeah gotchu, and continue on... AND YOU HAVE TO MAINTAIN THE DAMN THING.1
I've converted an empty bedroom in my house into an office and close the door when i code. when i finally leave my dungeon, my dogs are always laying down in front of the door, tails all a'waggin.2
What the heck COVID!
All the days have been blending together for the past 6 mo! What day of the week is this? Who am I? What's the meaning of life? Have I ever left the house?
Not going outside, getting alienated from my friends, getting somewhat anxious for no good reason...
Its so weird! This eery, suffocating stillness.
Alas! I hope the day comes soon that I may frolic in the multitudes of people!13
That feeling when you walk in a room, make a few steps on the floor and hear how all the walls are making cracking noises...
And some people choose to live in apartments/houses like that one.. Where walls can be punctured with a finger
what happened to firm, sturdy constructions...? What happened to strong walls and steady floors?
No way.. My house is gonna be built with rocks. Or at least a better part of it
How to clear the lunch of developers: Shout as loud as you can from the office that ZEPTO is loose on the network drives and watch everyone scramble to their computer.
Actually happened at work today, somehow the boss let it in. To top it off, we had customers in the house that watched the whole thing happen.
It wasn't pretty.1
You wouldn’t think that finding a home that actually had internet service would be the hardest part of house shopping in 2018...
Satellite internet does not count as internet. Also my statements apply to the US market only. Idk how bad this is in other countries.6
I'm sorry to say this, but C# along with other Microsoft tech stack is a crap show!!
*And now I'll be bombarded by all Microsoft fans in the house!!*16
Sometime in the near future…
"Hey Joe, how's the new robot working out?"
"Oh it's great, except that we have no more shampoo in the house."
"Yeah, apparently it got its hands on a bottle and infinite-looped on Lather, Rinse, Repeat."
Last night I found two Athlon XP processors in my house. They're a 2400 and a 2700, but I don't know if they work because I don't have other parts to test them.
Nothing too interesting, I just thought it was kinda cool10
man, fuck php.
fuck fucking php fuckitily fucking hard.
basically every fuckin stdlib function it has is fucked in some way.
can't even remember it anymore properly, but...
explode(" ", "some string like this ");
function to "split a string into array of strings using the first param as the boundary marker.
the above one would return
["some", "string", "like", "this", ""]
BECAUSE I'M FUCKING FUCKITTY SURE THAT WHEN THE LAST CHARACTERS OF THE STRING ARE EQUAL TO THE SEPARATOR STRING, EVERYONE WANTS TO GET BACK ONE EXTRA FUCKING USELESS EMPTY ITEM IN THE ARRAY.
because beyond the last wall of my house, there's another room of my house, you stupid Lerdorf fuck.28
My school is yet to decide what form of online schooling we'll use, but I've prepared in case it'll be live video conferences. ( I can freeze my webcam and I fixed my BT headphones, so I can do stuff during classes and reply from anywhere in the house in case I'm posed a question. )1
Been waiting for my new computer to come in the mail for a week only to find out that Amazon sent it to my old house all the way in utah (i live in georgia now). My life is over goodbye🙂2
I am in the mood for anything at 11 PM-5 AM.
Cleaning the house, studying, coding ...
Juices of ideas, energy and focus are just overflowing.
Too bad that I have to follow "normal people" schedule which starts at 9 AM.
Just been watching some police soap on YT with "real police officers in action". Haha, yeah.
Huh, what's that outside, flashing blue light? Oh, a police car. No, two. Three. Actually, four. All of the guys rush into the neighbour house, WTF. Real police officers in action.
Tis was the night before Christmas
And all through the house
Not a creature was stirring
EXCEPT THE BUG IN MY SOURCE
Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays everyone!2
I just had one guy coming back to the house at 4am, again, and he made his usual grand entrance, slamming the doors, stomping on the wooden floor making all the creaking sound as he walk all the way to his room, which is right beside mine. And when he went into the bathroom, which is on the other side of my room, he slammed he motherfucking lid on the toilet bowl which was so fucking loud I literally jumped out of bed. I ended up not being able to sleep (I have a lot of trouble falling asleep), and when I tried to sleep in the afternoon to catch up on the missed winks, another motherfucking bastard started blasting fucking hardcore electronics in the living room which is right below my room. The same bastard also plays loud movies or music at 2-3am. I’ve told that bastard that comes home late to watch his noise but man he only minds the noises I told him and nothing else. As for the other fucker, he’ll say he’d keep it down but continues doing what he’s doing anyway.
I moved here cause I know that it’s usually a quiet place and away from the party kids, but I somehow ended up with a party kid and an insensitive fucker (This motherfucker had the loudest sigh of frustration when I knocked politely on his door last night. Yes I calmed down before I talked to him, but ended up deciding to not utter a word at all when I hear that sigh).
I should move out, but I can’t find a place before next term cause it’s way too late at this point. I am on a lease, but my landlord understands my situation, and he seems okay with breaking the contract.
Having been here as an international student for almost 2 years now, and having moved 5 times, this has been the worst nightmare of a bunch of people to stay with.
For those that has read of me ranting about this elsewhere, yes it’s that same fucking bunch that doesn’t clean the house.9
FUCKING CHINESE SUPOSED IP CAMERAS...
First, they aren't Ip cameras, they are p2p cameras with different settings and more limited...
then took me 3 days to open 5 ports for 2 cameras, config the cameras, till they work.
YEY they finally work, can see them over the Internet (no default settings, even changed the Alias), have my Ip camera viewer on the Phone... but one doesn't activate on moviment.. in this 3 days only took 2 pictures with motion detection on and people passing in front of them... the other was working for like 5 minutes... giving black and white 7kb jpgs... after a few teeks... can't make it work again.
Now I have two cameras that I can see if my house is being robbed but no motion detection to warm me, or at least save some pictures on the server to serve as evidence (and maby finally get the team that is robbing one house a day, If they try to rob my house again...).
The cameras are very good as baby monitors or to play around, for 14$ and 20$... (love the 360º ball) , but as security cameras... Unless you have them connected to a security station and with a repeater close by... worthless...
Oh, and they may give me 1 good frame a second or lag to 10+seconds a frame...6
With all the rubber ducks and coding companions being thrown around in the rants I'm thinking about getting one myself... I don't think I can talk about code to my house mates (both non devs, they would just stare at me and get bored quickly) and not having something physical to talk to feels weird1
The foul excuse for a human I live with has been blasting the fucking radio ALL FUCKING NIGHT.
I've had no sleep, he's STILL pissed out his head, and if he doesn't shut the fuck up I'm going to lock him in and burn the house down.6
Time check 12:21AM in Philippines. Someone is knocking on our house. Suprisingly received a swag from #devrant. Thank you guys!3
Deadline in 24 work hours, for a in-house product to automate payment processing.
Why in 24 hours you say? , Me and the accounting guy is going on vacation on Friday.
Will it go into production on Friday evening while I'm going through the door?
ah yes, the usual family get-together: my grandma's throwing heavy shit with intent to kill, my sister is violently crying in a corner and refuses to move to safety, and my dad's shut down in a chair somewhere in the house. Just like every Christmas. And Thanksgiving. And Halloween. And every other large holiday.
Surprised I made it to 19.3
In the end it's all about the money, sexy wife and a big house, doesn't matter you're on LAMP or MEAN, azure or aws.. Focus one and master it till you're rare in your area. My advise to freshman developer as a developer who believed he will be a mediocre developer forever.6
Client had this great idea for a business where he would kennel dogs at his house and have a premium upgrade to the service where he would sell dog treats and other items as well as have a private members only area where they could view their dog.
My first question was "Is there any demand from your customers for such things and what type of budget do you have?"
His response was "I don't have much of a budget but I can give you some hockey tickets and give you a stake in the profit."
I politely declined. He didn't even have any cameras in his house to pull off such a thing, either let alone he didn't have a boarding license. Oh clients.3
Have you heard about Stugan? A cool project in Sweden where game developers spend the summer in Stugan (a small Swedish house) and Work on their projects.
Stugan is named after the famous Swedish adventure game "Stugan"and means the small house om just the house.
Check it out at:
When you want to write the unit test that demonstrates a subtle bug, but before recreating the same preconditions you end up writing 15 other tests, testing a lot of other stuff too, that in turn show other bugs, and skyrocketing the coverage (that was sitting at 0% actually).
Like I wanted to repair a hole in my umbrella to not get wet, and built a house instead.
As a student, I live in a house with friends and the actual didn't have a table in my room.
So after one month waiting for a answer of the owner I decided to buy one in second hand. All I can say is that I love it.
Any suggestions to some improvements?
PS: external drive is only temporary8
please show me a picture of your new plane, and noisily remind me of how much your house is worth. I want to know all about your finances while working for a pittance because I believe in the company. I feels good to be appreciated, and toward the money that comes in from the apps we develop, so that you can afford these things. douche bag bosses. aaaarrrrgh3
The business is prioritizing error reporting for issues we are aware of over actually fixing the bugs. Isn't that kind of like installing smoke detectors in a house that's already on fire instead of calling the fire department?1
Making the decision to leave a large, safe corporation that I'd been at for 10 years, but going no where, for a small independent software house was extremely difficult. But now I feel like I make a difference and not just a cog in a machine.1
i was looking for a Junior Android Developer job before this coronavirus pop out of nowhere. now i'm just stuck in the house and the chances of getting a Remote job as a Junior developer is very very thin 😐😐😐. And honestly i'm fed up of learning new skills7
What are the legal ramifications of reverse engineering a competing software and its respective workflow?🤔
Another theoretical situation will be if you all wrote the code and derived the algorithm in house.12
Just realised I've been looking for an x86 based laptop to install Linux on just for around the house...
Been looking at buying a brand new one and only now just remembered I have an old 2009 MBP...
Let's break out the elementary OS USB and breathe some life in this baby!1
holiday in parent's house.
inpiration comes like waterfall.
to code. 😂
Had a fun adventure this morning. Had to deliver some bags to some houses. Entered the addresses in Google Maps. Off we go. First house, no problem. Second house, and Google is taking me on a weird route, through some parking lots and stuff. Finally, it wants me to turn onto a bike trail. WTF? My Google maps is set for bike routes. Went a lot faster when I set it to car. No wonder there were so many bikes and the road seemed so narrow.3
I am not a php dev but I really like the following statement:
In the software industry you can compare a pre-built house to a general purpose framework. Building software using general purpose frameworks doesn’t make you a coder or a programmer any more than putting together a pre-built house makes you a carpenter.14
Just found out that I have been reassigned to maintain an in house shitty project... It's full of crap code, no documentation, has lot of duct tapes to keep the project together and 20+ open bugs and issues...
I am so happy with my current project. But my manager is always pissed off at me for no apparent reason.
Fuck this shit... Any excuse or advice to dodge this BS project? Can't quit job, I am getting payed alot here.7
Backstory: my father used to work in software development and IT support in companies with medium to large sized networks. I decided to catch up with him a few weeks ago and he asked me thus almighty question
"So if I installed another router in our house, does that mean I can double the amount of traffic going from my computer to the fibre modem?"
All respect has been lost, I was ashamed.3
I just realized something. So my company's whole release process and code management now run on mainstream tech products: Atlassian, Jetbrains, IBM and not in house/vendor crap1
My first internship was at a small startup in Belgium, we were 5 including me. Most of the time, we would all go to my boss's house for dinner and play rocket league then go back to work.
If software developers / engineers and various other technical people stop serving banks and governments and become free minded we’re be having our own clothes and food served to us whenever we want and where we want by now.
Fucking capitalism and stupid dickheads.
I think being able to be served by robots in your own house to provide you everything you need is first step for long spaceship trips that can take over galaxies.
Living on this planet is boring as fuck.2
!rant after over 2 years of fighting, I'm finally rid of my cheating-ex in finances today.
My House and life is finally my own again.
Setting up an FTP & Plex server for our house.
>> This was in my infancy of programming and tech, so it made me feel like a complete fucking BADASS.
It's going to be a tough week at home. We'd have to leave our house and find new accommodation. And I just find solace in the fact that, at least, I'm a developer and when all the dust is settled, I can earn enough to get out of this mess.
Special thanks to my best friend who supported me as I spent my college time trying to build my development skills!1
It's hotter than a donkey's balls in my house right now and I'm finding myself absolutely cranky at everything as a result. Time for some wine and bad Netflix, any suggestions?7
So my math teachers who don't even know a single bit about Dev, even ms paint, came into the IT classroom and said
"Learn hard students, get good marks for Advanced Level and get a scholarship. Then become a software engineer. Then you'll have a wonderful life. You'll have a beautiful wife, beautiful kids, Mercedes, big house. You'll be able to live in relaxation"4
Used to work salary and in-house for client but now do freelance for them ‘cause ‘rona.
Adobe CC and Font Suitcase licenses are due for renewal and they want to cancel them for all but essential in-house senior staff.
I tell them I have both at home, on my own dime, but I need their font folder to be able to use them.
So I have 12,000 fonts now.2
Mfw on azure/iot conference, one presenter shows his certificate validation, to connect to all devices in his house:
"lets not be paranoid about security"
My senior said bitbucket is not safe. 'We should host our code in our in house server'
Fuck you man, did u use ur own email server to receive email? Totally pissed off when someone simply say things that they don't know.6
Earlier today I spend 3 hours that included a nap and cleaning the house to try to clear my head and figure out why my Unity multiplayer code wasn't translating properly to local. Turns out a certain function has no problem existing in update in multiplayer but wants to be in fixedupdate in local... Productive day.
Dear Microsoft: I don't care if Edge or any other of your in-house developed software is faster than the alternatives, it's about quality not speed.
If you design quality products people will use them, just because they are "faster" doesn't mean shit.5
Anyone else get shit from their other half for working at home in the evenings/weekends sometimes? To make money to pay off the house? To save for our future? To finance their shopping hobby? Because I ruddy enjoy it!!!1
Hi all - mind if I get some advice?
Are coworking spaces worth it? I currently work from home but I'd like the opportunity to network, get out of the house more and build a better work-life separation. The options I'm looking at are in the region of £200-£250 in the city centre (Manchester, UK), which is easily within my budget.10
If you've give me an unclear and rediculously large workflow to implement with a confusing built in house library, dont demand me to TDD it. TDD works well when you know what it is your going to be doing. I'll slip and slide through this implementation and then come back for testing.
It got so hot in the house today my grandmother's ceiling fan melted inside. It gets up to 350°F when it's spinning now and fucking SCREAMS.
Here are the charred-ass screws we pulled out.7
The house is quiet...
I work from home most every day. Then came COVID.
Working from home went from a wonderful experience to god awful most days.
It worked like root's rant:
So today for the first time in what seems like years (but really just a few months) I'm working from home and everyone is out of the house.
It will only happen a few days a week.... but oh man it is nice ....1
IT's going around making sure everyone is able to work from home. It's gonna be like the shining at my house by the time the situation is over. I like having wfh as an option but 100% is gonna do my head in4
You know what I !love about summer?
My loneliness seems to just fucking FLY away.
More bugs in my house than in Windows ME3
So I'm getting brought into a team for our backend services of our administration application, and they're explicitly using Flask (Python library) for their exposed API in their application and data tiers.
As I'm familiarizing myself with their code, utilities, and dependencies, I notice they're stacking 7-8 decorators on their routes from their in-house utility module.. After further investigation, I realized half of them were entirely unnecessary, and they were proofing payload responses three times for the same JSON format.
The fact that we're using Python instead of Node or GoLang for our REST services is pain enough, but these god damn in house utilities are killing me.1
In the perfect future machines would do all the work... Everyone would have enough food, a house, a vehicle and lots of hobbies (cause there isn't work to keep us busy). In truth because machines are programmed by humans and humans are self destructive the rich will survive and live a good, work free live, the rest will live below the poverty line, scrapping anything to get something to eat... Remember Elisium?2
I am working more effectively nowadays from home rather than from office.
At office, I end up spending most time in eating, playing table tennis and meetings.
The only thing I am missing at my house is my 2 big 27" 4k office monitors.
When the in house designer has no fucking clue about UX and proposes the same shit as the existing pile of shit in the *redesign* -____-1
When the hardest question on you computer systems test is : draw a house in paint and paint it using only the brush :/.
So so happy i am done with this subject after this semester.3
Moved house on Friday, everything sorted but will have to wait up to 10 days for broadband and stuff to go live.
It's like living in the dark ages...5
Tonight begins the holiest day of the year for Jews, Yom Kippur. I'm about to embark on a 25 hour fast, no food, no water. I'll be in a prayer house for 15+ hours, literally begging God to let me live for another year.
Meanwhile, I'm set back in my classes 150+ hours of potential work time thanks to all the Jewish holidays this month. Sukkot, Shemini Atzeret, Simchat Torah, and Rosh Hashanah.
Being Jewish is fun T_T10
They know it has something to do with creating and modifying software. That is enough for them and so I am seldom bothered with requests for detailed information.
Also, most often, me working on hobby projects, or just viewing tutorial videos at home is looked upon as "Wasting time playing games".
Then there is also the perception of me being the family's in-house tech support guy.
Look... As much as I want to believe this... We all know it won't happen...
The tie between iOS and the in house ARM chips is something you can't replicate with just a new piece of hardware...5
I know I shouldn't do this, but I'm so frickin bored I end up resuming tasks from work here at my parents' house, in my old bedroom.
Anyway, merry christmas and happy holidays!
Logged in this morning and looked at my calendar and our boss put two weeks of Out-of-Office on his calendar (starting day before yesterday when he was clearly in). He didn't mention this at all at the standup meeting yesterday. He already took a week off earlier this year, at the beginning of the current craziness, to work on his house, but at least he told us about that before he did it.2
Lovely Sunday here, yet Windows decided to Fall a Creator update up in my PC.
3 hours jamming internet of whole house;
1 hour Preparing installation at 100%;
30 minutes spent on turning off new bloatware icons and silently changed settings;
Several dev tools stopped working, gave up;
Tried to play games they all stuttering;
Fall back to League of Lesbians and oh boi 792 almighty ping;
Well done! Microsoft.1
I remember we had a computer with windows 95 in the house. It was probably a ibm or something.
I think the first memory i have, is my mom showing me the hampster dance😂
I am starting my web development business and i intend to focus on building mainly custom ecommerce solutions to small and medium businesses or large ones too. I am just about to launch my first project and my client has been great.
Any advice from the pros in the house who have been there done that will be worth more than diamond right now to me.
I like advice mainly on how to find new clients.2
I wanted to continue working on my project at my grandparents house, using my laptop.
I've pushed the most recent code, but what I didn't push was the recent commits I made in my helper library...
I was updating and using the library locally and now I have a dependency on ../library name. Great job me3
Legacy code was so bad that it created the existence of my team to do a refactor and rewrite.
(Outsource to in house)
My in-house "office". A normal room, but with 2 desks. One for my monitors + laptop and the other one for other electronic stuff. It's a very quiet room :)
Moved into a new house and now won't have internet for the next 2 weeks because xfinity is apparently busy in my area
I have a nice desk, but my dogs insist that I work sitting on the floor with them. Just in case y’all were wondering who the bitch is in my house. It’s me.1
Stir crazy, locked in the house for days..... drove me to make asteroids -1979 for my 404 page. I can't tell if that's a good thing or not?1
The customer wants to drop Agile in favor of their in-house development methodology. They just sent an e-mail describing it...
I think my team needs a room decorated with cotton flowers and small huts to get into the right mindset.1
So I'm starting a new job in April, which will be my first 100% dev job. When I interviewed in January, they said I would work as an in house resource, and would most likely start off working with CMS systems etc to ease myself into this role, before transitioning to more advanced work. I was asked to come in for a meeting today, to look at a potential project.
Long story short, I'm being tasked with rewriting a frontend for their biggest customer to Angular, and this would most likely span over a year or so.
I can't decide if I'm excited or hilariously scared.2
Probably playing World of Warcraft and Overwatch with my wife and collecting everything related to it. We even got the music playing in our house most of the day :')3
I'm at my limits with working from home. It started off really cool, but for a multitude of reasons I just need to get out of my house. I'm seriously considering renting a work space to at least go to part time. If anyone in the Denver area wants to go in on one, or is looking to rent out space, please let me know.3
Probably working for a scientific research firm and building in house tools for collection and analysis of data...
I fucking hate documentation.
It's been 5 straight hours I've been preparing documentation for the "In-House Project", because apparently it carries the grades which is necessary for me.
Fuck this shit...2
"We live in a society where everybody feels guilty. We want to do good, but we don’t want to get out of the house. A brand can help us feel good if you buy this yogurt." - Mark Gobé1
!rant Just letting it out !
From my childhood days I never used to make it a habit to remember our house address as we used to change it often.
My father was the eldest in our family and he took care of his siblings. One younger brother got a nice job and was financially sound to own a house, and we were still a joint family for some time. After a year or so my father was insulted and he moved out in a fit of rage and for ~20 years we have hopped around from one place to another.
This week I will be moving in to my new house along with my parents. Hope I will remember this address forever.
Best experience? My homie @lordbarnhill and I stumbled onto the solution for installing OpenSocial #Drupal8 properly on Pantheon hosting.
Worst experience? Creating a website for a radiology group only to get fired with 3 days left until launch. The "new" developer turned out to be their IT guy in house took 2 months to launch. The experience up to the point of getting fired was excruciatingly detailed and filled with ope creep.
So I'm moving out of my current student's house (to a nice normal apartment yay) and people are making contact with me to start the grand sightseeing tour of this shit hole. But every time a new candidate sends their first message, they never tell me their name. Wtf is happening here, how is this the standard way to introduce yourself: "hi I'm interested in your housing, when can we meet.". Not even a question, more like a statement or something. Today someone had the audacity to simply told me to send pictures of the house out of the blue.
Am I just getting old or something? Why the hell can't people properly introduce themselves or even ASK something instead of semi-demanding it?!7
I moved house yesterday and now it's been around 27 hours since I last used my computer.
All I want to do is create but my setup is in boxes in another room and it's 5am.
Why must motivation strike at the worst times?2
Oh god that feeling when you get a complicated process to work the way you want it too. It is especially good due to the fact that it has been a psychological barrier in this project for a while.
I may walked around the house fist bumping the roof for a bit.
Any Angular devs in the house?
Does anyone know how angular lazy loading and webpack are related specifically? Struggling to find a straight forward answer.1
One of my collogues seems to now think Excel macros are a good thing and something that should be used on the reg.
I don't like this. Crappy in-house software is my department. And I won't use F***** Excel for it either2
Need help deciding,
Stay as a contractor in my new job that I started this week,
Or jump ship n play with bleeding edge tech with software house2
Even though I am only 19, I got introduced to computers pretty late. We always had an old Win98 machine in our house and when I was 8 my dad introduced me to Command & Conquer on it. And the first contact I had with the internet (which I really didn't care about until then) was when social networks became a thing at school, that was around 2010, when I was 11-12.
Right know, the biggest challenges when taking a new task are not learning the tool or framework or language, no...
The biggest challenge is how to integrate it with the burocratic and undoccumented in-house software and tools of my company.
Is it the same for you?? Should I start my job hunting already??1
let's call him Richie. Richie doesn't listen in team meetings, does not have any clue of what we are doing and what the important topics are. Richi is hiding between the cars in the parking house to not have to talk to you on the 2min way to the office. Richie is 'done' when he encounters any problems in his work so we have to do it. Yeah, we all love Richie...3
I once worked as the sole web developer for an in-house agency for a large corporation. The guy I reported to there was by far the best boss I ever had. Most weeks I wouldn't even see him.
He was smart enough to know the web was important to the business, but humble enough to say he didn't understand it. He rarely ever questioned the decisions I made.
The only downside to the job was it was part of a large corporation.
Was doing some chill programing when all of a sudden we lose power in the entire fucking house! So not just a blown fuse or something, but looks like the entire street has it, so no telling when it'll be back on either -_- Also I reaaaallly need to buy a UPS for my server, this is happening way too fucking often.5
So I just woke up and there is an internet outage in my neighborhood because optimum sucks balls, fuck the whole stupid low class internet service
Now I have to leave my house so I can work
8:00 - 4:00 : at the office, coding non sense in-house mobile app projects which have no success at all. Two years so far !!
Just scared the SHIT out of myself after accidentally shorting the live and ground connections. Piece of advice: the probe on your oscilloscope (ground) is probably shorted to the live connection on its plug. DO NOT TOUCH IT AGAINST A LIVE PCB - YOU WILL CREATE A DEAD SHORT AND A REALLY LOUD BANG. Now the whole fucking house is in darkness, it's 11pm, and I'm too scared to get to the fusebox.2
Finally dropped our old useless in-house legacy content editor (built by another team) today. Going through the database and ripping out all the shit that we had to keep for legacy support is the most liberating feeling I've had in weeks!1
"Functionality is so over-valued in design, and we’ve kept design very small in that way. Functionality is the sheer minimum. If your house burns down, what do you take? The cat in the window that you got from your mother, or the chair you have?" - Marcel Wanders6
I work from home and my biggest coding distraction is when the house is a wreck. I also love in a small 2 bedroom apartment and my office is in the living room..3
Some of the clients I work with have their own in house (or outsourced) developer that works on day to day tasks. I let them know their load time was pretty bad, and gave them a list of changes. One of them was 'Properly remove content that was no longer being used'
Because adding 'display:none' on a div full of large image is definitely not helping.
Is anyone in the house working on Cloud Access Security Broker (CASB)? If yes, how is the domain and what's the market value of it?
When you come across the generated script of a H5 banner from client's production house, you are tempted to rewrite the whole thing instead of fixing the bug.
If you really decided to fix it, in the end you found out you spent nearly 100x more time on this piece of shit, and that makes you feel really bad.1
I saw through times when having a computer at home was considered luxury.
I saw the days when there was no cellphones and only landline phones; One per house.
I saw the days when the internet was a thing that was only used to check emails; In browsing centres and offices.
Wait. All these in less than 2 decades!!
I feel ancient :(1
A chess game on msdos
Prince of persia
Eveeytime we go to my uncle's house he would get a game for me. Then I learned cd .. back and forth, dir format. I try to do the same for my nephew but he knows more about new games and better than me in pubg. I didn't loose my noob spirit.
That moment when you really want to try swift but Ubuntu. I can do this on Mac(in house) but I prefer laptop with Ubuntu in work 😩2
Implementing a third-party link shortner:
Keep hyperlinks in-house. Keep ’em fast. Fight the good fight.
In your opinion, is it better to work in a dedicated development company (or otherwise dedicated to your IT specialization) or be in-house?
I'm currently one of 2 in-house devs for a small enterprise. So my software engineering practices and code won't be of the highest quality but at this early stage of my career I'm gaining experience in various different aspects of the job and doing many individual different things. So overall I'd say being in-house is good early on for initial exposure, so long as you have a mentor to help you out.
All the iOS devs in the house, is it just me or has the latest Xcode beta taken lots of steps back in terms of stability?1
That must have been my Dads Amiga. Was something with 5 1/2" Discs and a nice black n green monitor.
I think it had a mouse and he showed me how to use Tetris, Golf and other stuff.
After that I used the first DOS and the first Win with a Mouse.
We always tended to have the newest PC in our house and I went Online around 1998 I think.
Monolithic (compiled to native executable) 20MB application for internal purposes only (in-house developed hence source is available) is bad/unacceptable but Docker container (based on public image) of 800+ MB is good?! O tempora, o mores!
!rant - dev prompt
What tools do you use for project file generation & similar automation?
Things like CRUD generation, for both front/backend?
Are there any open-sourced or enterprise tools, or do you have in house developed generators?
Any feedback appreciated!2
Any cool Dev setups? I have already seen /r/cableporn and /r/battlestation. I am moving house in March and decided to rebuild my setup, new desk more monitors etc. Want to see some Dev examples.1
Transition from php (symfony) to c# (asp.NET core). So ya the goals to not kill myself in 2018. Oh and I have to transition our jquery heavy, API-less in house CRM app over to angular (I don't even know yet if this is possible).2
When the weekend arrive, i imagine myself as busy... busy as a bee to finish our project, the DFD, and other chapters in our system analysis design. But house chores! Hays, feel sorry to myself we need to rest *tic tac, tic tac, tic tac*2
Being a person prior to Dev work. Lol... Jk.
Honestly though... I'm still new at this but I feel like me being a middle ground helps in tech discussions with the business side of the house. I translate for the senior dev and everyone seems to appreciate knowing what he's meaning exactly when he starts going off on functions and objects.
Our manager held his house warming party at his house. Meeting in general to boss is so awkward . We went early so that we can avoid meeting him but shitt.. as reached he is greeting us at door 😂😂😂 and we have to go through an awkward conversation 🥴.2
Anyone following the house of common at the moment? Best sitcom I have seen in years.
Is there any good program to visualize wifi signal?
I want to install access points in a house and want to see how good the signal is everywhere3
“Remember, code is your house, and you have to live in it.” - Michael Feathers
How yesterday should have ended:
- completed vimtutor
- Arch installed on my laptop
- arch rice (essential)
- arch configured to consume as little battery as possible
How it ended:
- no working pendrive found in my house. FML
I know I already posted a rant/meme on installing Linux (I gave up cause too many problems) but this time it was for real. I'll try again today with a borrowed pendrive.3
About to rewrite a module of our in house ERP app written in access as a web app to demonstrate to management that access is in the past. Fingers crossed this goes to plan managed to wangle this with the wife(thank god she believes in me)
I want to continue learning coding is team tree house a good place to learn coding? I also want a job in coding as soon as possible so what's the quickest path to getting hired. What languages should I learn and in what order?
Thanks for your replies guys!1
Working on a project that requires two computers is complex for me currently. I need to wait for the only other windows computer to become available in the house.
Although in the mean time I’m just taking the time to learn WinForms since someone lent me a book for it. I know WPF is better but I’m not interested in learning it at the moment. WinForms will do all I need it to.8
I got this huge onboarding bonus with Airbnb. I wrote life changing artistic code that affects the lives of millions. Then I met this incredible hot chick and bought a house in Malibu.
Any Karma experts in the house? Really want to blow my brains out :D
@dfox Roughly how long would it take for devRant stickers to arrive in Australia from when I ask for them? I'm moving house very soon and don't want to somehow miss them!3
