Was working and decided to go get a drink so I Took my headphones off.
Just in time to hear a colleague say: (in Dutch it sounds better) Beste Bob, krijg de tering.
English equivilant: dear bob, go fuck yourself.
Giggled hard 😆20 -
Sometimes I want to go back in time and slap myself when I say "yeah that shouldn't be too difficult" to a client.4
-
When you've got 4 personal projects to finish, 2 computers to build, 1 full-time job to wrap up, an online course to complete, Uni starts in two weeks and your family decided it's the perfect time to go on vacation.
It's 2:30 am and this is my life.6 -
Fucking hell. If I like your bloody app, I'll go rate it myself you fucktwaddle. Don't ask me to rate it just after I've opened it for the first time.7

The Dutch referendum about the new mass surveillance law is a go, fuck yeah!
Also, due to a some stuff, a delay is postponing the start of the mass surveillance to May next year.
A little more time to setup secure stuffs :312 -
I was looking through some code I wrote 10-15 years ago. Seriously, WTF? Makes me want to invent a time machine to go back in time and punch myself in the face.5
-
Trying to extend 15 year old code.

Time to go home.8 -
I just implemented parallelism in one of my major data collection tools for work, and cut the tool's run duration by 90%. That seems like as good a time as any to go to sleep.2
-
When I'm on call and its weekend, I'm often a little nervous the entire weekend and time seems to go slow.
Programming on the dns proxy/firewall now and time is suddenly going quite faster.
This is a damn relieve.6 -
Look babe, i love you. I really do, and i will make time for you, and have dinner dates & go to movies, and beaches, but please just let me finish my f*$&ken code!!5

watched a client use IE, all the while they didn't use tabs or even a new window, every time we had to go back to a previous site they had to Google the URL then click the search link3

Time to download a 20GB image on corporate network: 7 hours.
Time to tell my NAS at home to download the image, go home - by public transport - copy the 20GB file to my laptop (already downloaded before I get home) and travel back to the office... 1 hour 50 minutes.
My office even has fibre optic and my home copper...9 -
Wear headphones at home office. Not because I can't play it out loud, but when you go around in Iron Maiden shirts the wife gives you a hard time about listening to J-pop.4
-
Fucking bastard cunting customers I am not starting your shite at two minute to going home time, if you don't like go fuck yourself. #rant over16

Telephonic "technical" interview at 5 in the evening
Interviewer : Tell me about yourself
Me : Blah blah...
Interviewer : Thank you for your time
(Call time on phone... 7 minutes)
Absolutely uninterested... no single counter question... Guess she just wanted to go home early... 😑6 -
My first year at the Uni I believed I was "superior" to others as I knew Python and they knew C.
I'd give my kidney to someone who can go back in time and bang some sense into my empty skull.9 -
Go to check some random programming stream and joined at a time where he's looking confused, about seemingly how "hello world" turned into "ass" hahaha5
-
I've just come back from a business networking event. There was a speaker who gave a talk about not wasting time.
On of her points was catching up on emails, from your smart whilst waiting to go into meetings, as that's apparently wasted time.
All I do whilst waiting to go into meetings is read devrant :)
It puts me in s good mood :)3 -
What is the longest time you spent for a single bug fix?
3 days and going here, this piece of shit doesn't seem to reveal itself until I go bald and be a psychopath. 😲14 -
Boss: I don't want you spending more than 30 min looking into the problem.
Me: ok
Go back to desk and read or watch some cs training. Maybe related.
Go back to boss.
Me: going to take (over estimate tome) to fix.
Boss: ok.
Go back to desk and fix in less time than estimated.
Look like gold.3 -
Hope I don't jinx myself, but I've only worked 8 hours today. I haven't done that since I started 5 months ago...12

Ah, new feature submission to app store day.
- Tests passing = check!
- App built = check!
- App manually tested = check!
- App store content = check!
- Boilerplate answers to the same 6 questions from PM, every time we go through this = check!
Ready to go baby!! -
My team is working against me, seriously time to look for a new job! Bad management, piss poor communication, and...I'm in the wrong room: https://www.devrant.io/rants/2857231
-
I like being self taught because I can work at my own pace and try different languages to see what interests me most. But so many of these tutorials are just shit. Or the content is good and the instructor is shit. I may need to just suck it up and go to Uni, but I am 19 and enjoy my time working and my free time. I think it's time for me to grow up soon though.17

Alarm Levels on my phone:

So I just got let go because there was not enough work to keep me full time. Yet my manager was farming out dev work to a 3rd party developer... Fml3
-
When it keeps happening every time but you're too lazy to fix it because you always remember it at 7am when you want to close the computer and go get some sleep...
Ugh...1 -
Incase you wonder where I am gone to: Well. Looks like I'm a part time irganist now xD

Time to go to bed.
Why not trying this lib ? it's not that late, let's give it a try for an hour and then --> sleep.
Woaw what, two hours passed already ? I was just still beginning to have fun ! so frustrating. Na, I could not sleep if I'm frustrated, let's dig deeper for 30min and then, go !

In the morning : can't wake up, tonight I promise, I go sleep at nine.

So windows wants to be my friend, wants to record my every move, and now wants to record my every everything on the go.
I’m starting to think if the pain of transitioning to linux full time is going to be worth while soon.6 -
You know what I do when I get upset or depressed?
I put myself in bed. I guess some things from childhood don't change.
Having a tantrum? Time to go to bed.3 -
While compiling LLVM, you have enough time to go get a beer.
Out of the fridge.
From the supermarket.
Two town's over.6 -
We just had an hour and a half long meeting, where at the end we spent 15 minutes debating whether or not to add 15 minutes to the meeting because we didn't have time to go over all the issues...2

Top advice to give to a new dev? Go back in time and download devRant, then buy a rubber ducky. Yes, I finally got mine 👍🏻3

Worked on these amazing production projects during my time at the internship. Now that I am about to leave, every fucking thing that can go wrong is going wrong.
Why can't I just leave in peace :(2 -
"Developer code must ensure that IAsyncDisposable implementations don't take a long time to complete."
Ah yes, the very technical "long time" unit of measurement. God why don't you just go fuck yourself microsoft7 -
The weekend is here!!!
Time to go out and have fun!!!
Nah just joking. Time to write some quality code after cleaning our company's backend (pun definitely intended) all week! -
The first time you go to DevRant :
- " Mmh not bad "
When you realise you can win a stress-ball :
- " OMG need to find something funny to say !! "1 -
You know a good way to handle all of the issues with W10 force updating your system? Do it yourself FFS!
You know there are updates. Windows has been telling you ...
Pick a damn time, start the update and go get a coffee, lunch, take a dump or go home for the day.
It's *never* going to be the right time if you don't choose it. It will always be an inconvenience or you'll be "in the middle of something important" and then you'll get all pissy about it.
Yeesh ...10 -
Why do people like hiring managers at companies seem to think that because you are paid to code you spend your spare time coding?
You don't expect a surgeon to operate all day then go home and randomly start cutting people up, so don't expect a code surgeon to spend all day coding to go clock off the start hacking away at shit either!10 -
And the best question that a person asked me today is - Why my Windows PC have a Mac address? -... Ok now is really time to go home.1
-
They ask me how i can stare at a screen for 6h and go to sleep right away. They say it makes them unable to sleep after that time.
I say EMBRACE THE POWER OF F.LUX1 -
fuck.
I think when you need 20 minutes to figure out that you tried to use (0) to acces array values instead of [0] in Java it is time to go to bed.3 -
Always when I have some excessive amount of spare time, something always gotta go wrong and waste 90% of that available time for fucks sake.
Wanted to install raw antergos on my new usb for pure chrooting into it, but it gets stuck on preparing the disk and there seems to be no solutions to it.6 -
Friday. 17:56. Time to go home.

Don't scroll here.
Go and live a real life,
Don't make a computer screen as your world,
there is a beautiful world outside of your cave,
Talk with people's face to face,

Ok enough philosophy, Time to add new shit in current shitty code.

Properly setting the height on my 3d printer and spending time tweaking settings? Nah.
Putting pieces of cardboard under the bed until it prints okay is the way to go -
It's 4 am in the morning.
I have an important test at 9.
My laptop decided now was just the right time to make the screen go black.
Sometimes Murphy just politely hands you your ass.1 -
When u spend too much time writing Java and suddenly go back to C# yet continue to write Java code 😪4

15 hour days, build is broken, laptop crashed and I ragequit by nearly throwing it out the Window.
Time to go Home. -
1 am, wide awake,
I want to go code but cannot take,
for time is not my friend,
If I go now, it will not end.
Rest is needed, sleep must be,
or tomorrow I will pay the fee,
concentration will be sparse,
and boss will surely kick my arse.2 -
Tfw your work pc boots so slowly, that you have time to go to the cafeteria to get some tea and when you return it still hasnt booted.8

At first, I was skeptical and somewhat resilient of trying Arch Linux. As a former Debian based distros user, I have to say : once you go Arch you don't go back! Time to 🍚 it up a bit more!6

Ah, nothing quite like settling in for some beer and mindless Internet videogame violence on a Saturday night only to find out 30 mins into your session that your PSU has shat itself.
Time to go shopping I guess...1 -
I really don't like billing time for things I am not really sure how to do and need time to educate myself on. This happens more often than my wallet is comfortable with and I spend more time learning than making money. How do you go about staying in an estimate or fixed budget when something comes up that you don't know anything about?7

Time for job change? -
I have a strict rule about putting my computer away by 7pm.
I've found that if I get started on something, no matter how stupid it is, I will stay up all night working on something. If I try to quit, I go to bed and can't sleep because I'm still thinking about it.
Setting a time gives my brain time to let go before it's time to go to bed.2 -
Why have so many fucking websites the signup form in the start page but you have to click in the menu to get to the login?!

Planned on installing Linux, for the first time, on a old computer today. Turns out you need a usb-stick to install it from. Minimum 2gb. - No problem, I thought, because I have a old stick in a drawer. Turns out it was on 128mb. Outdated technology. Time to go shopping.4

As of today, 12:11 CEST, my days as a student who hates school are over. In one month, i will be a programmer. Feels fucking great.
I may go back in the future, but not right now.
Also, in my new job i have to go to school to, but only 1/3 of the time, and i am getting paid for it.2 -

In the time I was attempting to learn C++ I was attempting to program an application that encrypted a file. Sounds cool but at the time I had no idea on how encryption worked and it didn’t go well. And didn’t work1

When you decide it's not worth of your time to go through lengthy code documentation and just run that stackoverflow snippet straight on production.. 🤠

I quit my education to go on a path to become a self-taught developer. It doesn't work out that well. I still have a part time job. Which doesn't cover all my expenses. I don't have a degree and nobody wants to hire me. I am getting a second job which leaves me little time for coding. Soooo yeah... Mistakes were made.24

Programming smth complex is literally time traveling. My clock goes in these steps:
20:00 -> so much time left
22:00 -> time to wrap up soon
02:00 -> wut? Impossible
The type of projects I do is quite limited to standard library so I also don't spend time on reading docs of some dependency. I make everything myself. Afterwards, I look up what the way to go is how others do it and compare. Mostly, I don't adjust, it's just smth for next time. That's the whole hobby. Just keep going6 -
So after a pretty packed day of family time, DIY, play dates and parenting, I managed to squeeze in a couple of hours of game dev... now to get up in 6 hours to go to work.1

Thanks, AfterShip.com, for working flawlessly while the system I was building was in dev/test mode and for the first few days in live mode, then completely crapping the bed the first day I needed you to work with real tracking data with the live system. You were the ONE thing that was working consistently well, and you had to go and ruin it.4

time zone shift.
Am I the only one whos's inner clock seems to go absolutely crazy...
Might be due to my health issues, but whenever these one hour time shifts happen - trouble sleeping starts again, feeling sluggish and blue and nothing seems to work.
I hope it doesn't take long to readjust, cause today was completely unproductive6 -
I am surprised how little time does my brain take to go from

So it turns out that a lot of writes to S3 is slow, regardless of whether you spent the time to rewrite your code from SAX to JAXB, then Go, then finally C++, thinking the problem was always with your code.

At a time in my life where I am turned down for minimum wage part time jobs but am expected to go for a graduate role that pays more money than I've ever known.
Weird times, man. Weird times.1 -
I'm getting started with Go (so cool so far!) and I'm trying to interact with Tumblr API using their Go Client...
Every time I google something about it I got the growing feeling that I am the first person who uses that client LOOOL2 -
The last two years of degree have really opened my eyes on how studlpid and difficult people can be. I genuinely think that the next time a teacher tries to pull a stunt or fucks something up for us I'll go full ballistic on them. Still have one year to go. God help me.2

I wish i had a time machine just to go back in time and shoot the people who invented Magento. What a load of crap.

Wine 3 stable was released this week. A ton of games just popped up as 100% playable. If there was ever a time to go over to Linux full-time, this is it.6

Next time someone asks me to go get something that's heavy, I'll smile, go there and return with a pointer to that thing. After all, we have to practice these programming concepts in everyday life 🚶♂️🚶♂️

Working full time and going back to college......
I got my full time gig in January. This semester I decided to go back for my bachelor's because I only got my associates degree. Honestly balancing the homework and work isnt that bad. It's trying to get ANYTHING ELSE done....like getting and oil change, going to the dentist, etc. I have to use paid time off for all of it now. :(2 -
Welp. My computer is perpetually blue-screening. Time to give up, eat a sandwich, and go to bed early, I guess.1

I WANT TO BE A TIME MILLIONAIRE AGAIN.
I want to go back to my old self where I always had enough time to do what I loved. When I used to live HAPPY.

When I started developing my current Django project, I had decided to go full TDD, do it like a pro. But I stopped after some time, as I spent more time trying to make the website look right than trying to make the backend work, which always seems to work fine. Am I an idiot? I think I'm going to regret it...6
-
So I'm bouncing between projects.at the moment and trying to get SDLTTF working and yeah, going well.
On that note. I think it's sleep time, 5 hours till I have to go pick up my series x .-.2 -
I've probably spent more time on refactoring than on actual coding with this personal project. The problem is, ideas come to me while developing, and that means I have to go back and change things every time. Is that normal or is there a better way?3

Open a new to do list

How to go from manual test cases to automation is NP-Hard. Figuring out we have less time than we need is not.

Launch my entertainment company and leave [day job] to focus on it. If things go really well, have enough money to spend my time working on whatever projects I want irregardless of job.

Boss calls a team leads meeting which is just me and the other guy. Rest are product or project managers.
Turns out they concerns over how our last few sprints are always left unfinished as the work in it doesn't get passed QA.
Tried to tell him how can devs work on something that failed QA on the last day of the sprint.
We have one QA person who tests 20 something devs work. We are massively under resourced and yet they want us to do everything and always end up making promises to clients that we can't keep coz our sprint doesn't have capacity.
Yet they are hiring more product managers instead of getting some more QA help.
Sick & tired of this shit. -
I just discover vim-anywhere and tmux at the same time.
It's mind blowing!
Every time I was changing something on my website over SSH I have to go out for a few minutes and I have a TimeOut.
Vim-anywhere does not need any comments.

Her: What do you do in your spare time?
Me: Learn to code
Her: Can you install an antivirus on my laptop and make it go faster?
Now I just want to kill myself. Who else here has encountered this?2 -
Just ripped the inside seam of one side of my trousers from knee to crotch.
Damn me and my muscular thighs, some one is going to have to go out and buy me some trousers at lunch time.3 -
My first internship was at a small startup in Belgium, we were 5 including me. Most of the time, we would all go to my boss's house for dinner and play rocket league then go back to work.

I am not wanting to compile OpenCL for my Pi in the hopes that it helps this go any faster, but I also don't want to waist my time waiting for this to go.
My current dilemma.1 -
My uni uses a drop down menu to show different course times to select which course to go to. And they sorted them by alphabetical order instead of time. What the actual fuck.

I used to think work from home have lots of pro like we can save our travel time, don't need to dress-up etc and I always wanted to do wfh. But this Covid-19 pandemic made me to hate work from home now I want to go back to office so that I have fix in-time and out-time and proper 8 hr work time.5

Why is it that with every Windows update the Edge settings go back to default?
EVERY SINGLE FUCKING TIME2 -
How many times does it happen that devs leave an old job to go to a "prestigious" new job only to end up hating it?
In my case I don't like my new job and don't want to go back to my old job(even if I did kind of like what I did there). I'm kinda stuck waiting for a certain minimum amount of time to pass so that I could go to some other company doing work that I actually like doing.6 -
Go for a helpdesk position: Programming is to boring, just writing all the time...
What the FUCK am I trying to learn now?!3 -
Time to go senior?
I am a web dev for 2.5 years now.
It's my second company.
Had couple of side projects.
And I still feel I don't know enough to be called senior..7 -
Facebook phasing out old instagram API made my life so much more fun. Now, to get a feed OW MY OWN ACCOUNT'S POSTS that I could filter by tags I need to go through two layers of authorisation - and then still go through ridiculous hops to get those goddamn tag lists. JESUS CHRIST. I hate Zuckerberg and I wish him a rusty guillotine when the time will come.4

I know and I understand why people still opt for Windows but if they also try to pirate it, that's the only time to tell them to go get Linux. If they're too cheap to get the Windows license, go Linux.3

When you don't want to go for your midday run, not because you don't feel like working out, but because it'll take time away from coding and you can't read devRant while you run...1

I can't stand getting assigned tasks via email. There's no persistence. I don't want to manually go enter the data into a tool that you as my manager could have done the first time.

Did you get onboarded as a developer properly? I mean did you have enough help to start coding real fast in your team? I find my new team has so many resources that I can't even go through and pinging someone every time feels like a kill every time.8

When you're writing your most beautiful module yet and realize that you need the new Jackson library, go to upgrade the dependency and all your old dependencies break because nobody ever took the time to keep packages up to date! #DependencyHell

1) Quitting the job that I felt led on from the get go and didn't realize I signed up to be a full time contractor instead of a full time employee.
2) Getting my degree in Network Administration.1 -
Right know, the biggest challenges when taking a new task are not learning the tool or framework or language, no...
The biggest challenge is how to integrate it with the burocratic and undoccumented in-house software and tools of my company.
Is it the same for you?? Should I start my job hunting already??1 -
Was spending good 20 minutes trying to understand why by bind was not working, its time to go home...3

I'm at my limits with working from home. It started off really cool, but for a multitude of reasons I just need to get out of my house. I'm seriously considering renting a work space to at least go to part time. If anyone in the Denver area wants to go in on one, or is looking to rent out space, please let me know.3

Do you guys think that it would be possible to build a cryptocurrency that could replace traditional banking and money at all?
A non anonymous cryptocurrency, that could guarantee enough privacy to not be used for surveillance but at the same time could be used by common people.
I had this thought recently but at the time of writing ( :P ) I haven't enough knowledge and time to go deeper than this (meaning "nothing").14 -
Started learning React, don't know is it a good time to start it or should I go for something else!2

That horrible moment when your 'documentation is something that happens to someone else' approach (due to lack of time) catches up with you and you have to go back and generate data dictionaries and diagrams on a deadline.
Gah -
I'm doing a thing that I *think* will save time, but it's weighing the time saved in having to maintain the secure password against having to convince my manager that using a random string in an ansible deployment for a database is fine because everything that connects to it is in the same stack... What could go wrong?2

All mandatory tasks complete for the week, no meetings, no distractions, time to go back to the default of documentation........ahhh email just in from nodeweekly!

User gives printee asset # to configure scan to email function... Configure SMTP server settings ensure everything is correct... Ask user to test it... No go... Try different SMTP server still no go... Tweaks Configuration settings... No go... Finally after getting annoyed at my quite possible incompetents, I ask the user to confirm the printer asset number... They gave me the wrong printer asset the first time... [face palm]

Test your code. Take extra time to do self-review. It'll improve your code quality and position within your peers.
When you enter that "minor change-trial-error" phase. Go to sleep or take a long break. You're loosing time and adding more work to be reviewed and corrected later -
You know it's time for a break when you go to your browser and type in function instead of facebook.4

I can't even concentrate anymore. I am dying to tell my boss that I'm quitting to go to a bootcamp. But I'm not quite sure if it's the right time. I have to be 100% first about my alternative source of income, which is ridesharing.

If I had one Chance to time travel, I'd go 40years into the future and come back with the latest tech at that time and come back to be a billionaire.7

Well, what should I say. I don't know if it happens to anyone here. But I recently made a backend in Go. I am not an experienced programmer either and I had to complete my main project in Node.js first. I was short on time too.
But me being a great lad, thought: let's do the server side in go. So, started learning go and then web programming in go. And well, didn't complete the project in time.
Lost the guy who hired me. I am a freelancer btw. Although my thirst for learning was gone. I have faced this problem many times. The desire to learn new stuffs instead of trying perfect what I already know.1 -
The most efficient meeting you can have is the one that you don't have to go to.
Basically if a meeting is proposed and it's a pure waste of time. Just don't show up, spend time wisely. -
Finally continuing on my thesis writing it in MS Word. Every time I misspell something I go back and try to use "Ctrl+." to get correct suggestions... I miss Visual Studio...

Imagine studying for a computer related course and to makeup for living expense, you go for part time jobs.
Now, is it just me or this is just a bad idea to get into a part-time job that is no where related to your study field?
It doesn't make sense to work in MacD or some retail outlet at all.
Any thoughts?6 -
A hell of a year for me . I’m behind with my deadlines and I’m trying to keep my sanity . I took 6 hours free time to enjoy myself and tomorrow need to go back to work . Yaaaay . Happy new year *fml*.

I can't be the only developer thats putting together a all current documentation myself and my clients uses. To send a copy to Github, Microsoft and twitter in order for them to wokify the documentation.
They an old saying. Go woke, Go broke. I'm not prepared to waste time and money for them to change years of language and definition incase it helps someone.1 -
Let's say that you are given the opportunity to go back or forward in time, anytime you want, anywhere you want, but it has to be a specific date, time and place, and it's a one time offer. You can stay there for an hour, and you will be invisible and unable to interact with your environment. What time and place do you choose?6

When the fuck did valet go from .dev to .test. Fucked me over bug time. Needed up breaking dnsmasq and had to rest the whole system. Sys noob. I can program though 😂

And more time is left to work on other tasks that always get pushed away.2 -

I always have a tough time waking up and getting going I. The morning - today my first thought was “I have to run the go function.”
What is wrong with me. Also, why don’t humans have a go function. -
Don't you hate it when you run out of variable names and you start using random names and the next time you go to that code you have reanalyze your own code to see what each of those variables does...1
