Definitely my security teacher. He actually expected us to actively learn the stuff and put effort into our education. He guided us through malware analysis and reverse engineering, simplifying it without insulting us.
We had students who thought they knew everything and he corrected them. We had arrogant students he put in place.
He treated us like adults and expected us to act like adults.
That's the only class I enjoyed studying for, because he would tell us exactly what wasn't on the exams (it was an intro course, didn't need to know the math). There were no trick questions.
I told him about the shitty teacher and he helped me through that confidence block. He helped me realize I *can* make it through the workforce as a female in security because I will work my ass off to be the best I can be. He reminded me why I love computers and why I want to go into forensics.
He's been a great mentor and role model and hiring him is one of the few things my department did right.7 -

My Razer laptop died due to a hard drive failure so i filed an RMA. They didn't have the replacement part in stock, so they're replacing the laptop all together. Mine is a 2019 model with a 2060, but the current equivalent model has a RTX 3070, so I'll get that instead. I'm not complaining 😏9

Promising the boss a 95% model accuracy when the arXiv paper says it can only reach 86% is what I call self-checkmate2
-
Tired of hearing "our ML model has 51% accuracy! That's a big win!"
No, asshole, what you just built is a fucking random number generator, and a crappy one moreover.
You cannot do worse than 50%. If you had a binary classification model that was 10% accurate, that would be a win. You would just need to invert the output of the model, and you'd instantly get 90% accuracy.
50% accuracy is what you get by flipping coins. And you can achieve that with 1 line of code.5 -
Why do most people think that machine learning is the answer to their poor business decisions. I have recently had a client who won't stop talking about how his business will grow to Google's scale if I get the model to 97% accuracy . Regardless to say his data is noisy and unstructured. I have tried to explain to him that data cleansing is more important and will take most of the time but he only seems to care about the accuracy and how he is losing investors because I haven't reached that accuracy. This is fucking putting alot of pressure on me and it's not becoming fun anymore. I can only hope he achieves his ambitions if I ever get that accuracy (Ps: From the research papers I have read on that problem, the highest accuracy a model has ever got to it 90%)3

I've been developing an Android app for a specific model of a handheld barcode scanner (almost 3 months) for our customers.. We are finally going live with this application so my boss ordered a new batch of devices. Bought the newer, fancier model instead of our test/dev model...

Former classmate: Our alma mater is looking for alumni to participate in career day. Share what skills you need and the steps you took for your career path!
Me: Thanks for the invite. But I’m not a good role model for this.
FC: Why not? You’re a successful engineer!
Me: So I used my full tuition university scholarship on an art degree because I was too depressed after a long physical illness. Oh, and for some reason a lot of y’all assumed I went to a private uni when I went to the public uni. Then I went to graduate school immediately after and during a recession and ended up with tens of thousands in student debt. Then I did a lot of part time jobs before going to a shady coding bootcamp. I’m lucky to have encountered an advocate and a company willing to take me on as a junior dev. I’m pretty sure I was a diversity hire and I was definitely underpaid. I’m lucky to have moved on from there and to be thriving now. I’d tell the students to skip college (like I had considered) and go into a trade. And I’d also tell them a lot of life is luck and not just hard work.

Having a new Thinkpad Model feels like having a MacBook. Ram is broken. Can’t replace it because it’s soldered to the Motherboard. So what should I do with it? 🤔6

Working on big project during summer paid intership. A lot stuff I have learned there, not just programming, but also model design, team planning etc.2

I was nearly about to punch someone today.
So, this guy is taking issues with my 3D model, yeah? But it's not the model he has issues with, it's that "why doesn't this include the stuff """I""" need?". Well, you giant man-baby could have actually visited the model like two months ago when I made it, but noooooooo let's leave it until a few days before his massive demonstration is due. Plus, the pieces I received from someone else also didn't have this info, so, like, where do you want me to get them from? Oh, from the "other" model that was literally delivered by a third party like two weeks ago? Nice. Hold onto your breath while I go rip that model apart piece by piece and put the info you need, in the format you need, in this model. 😒
... Jeeeeeez. And my computer broke down two days ago. 🤦
Could this get any worse? It could, but didn't. Luckily, someone else gave me a hand, so now I just need to go to work on a weekend just to install unreal engine again just so I can rip the second model apart for this one piece that he "really needs".
The worst part? I'm sure all of this tantrum is actually so he can justify why his work is ... well... "not working".
Let the finger pointing games begin!
(Actually not afraid of that at all. My boss knows better so yolo)
Idk, my brain is eeeeeeeeeek.1 -

(not really dev related, but a rant nonetheless)
I just got a new 3D printer, and all of a sudden, people are giving me print requests. I don't think that they realize that I don't just tell the printer that I want whatever, but that I have to either find the model online or design it myself.

The object-oriented model makes it easy to build up programs by accretion. What this often means, in practice, is that it provides a structured way to write spaghetti code.

Progress on my sudoku application goes well. Damn, what is javascript fantastic. While the code of the previous version that I posted here was alright I did decide that i want to split code and html elements after all. I have now a puzzle class doing all resolving / validating and when a field is selected or changed, it emits an event where the html elements are listening to. It also keeps all states. So, that's the model. puzzle.get(0,1).value = 4 triggers an update event. It also tracks selection of users because users selecting fields is part of the game. I can render full featured widgets with a one liner. Dark mode and light mode are supported and size is completely configurable by changing font-size and optional padding. So far, painless. BUT: i did encounter some stuff that works under a CSS class, but not if I do element.style.* =. Made me crazy because I didn't expect that.19

Github has a very cool business model. They launch most of their services for free in public repos and have a pay for using them in private repos. So when people use them and like them in open environment, github get free advertisements for potential customers that might use that in closed environment.
Google also has a similar model with its gsuite, but it has its advertisements business model over it that makes it look bad.
Personally, i like github's model but google gets a bad light for not being privacy focussed, while github is thriving.4 -

CRED, an Indian start-up with valuation worth Billions doesn't even have a business model.
Hear me out, countless start-ups don't have a business model but everyone can think of something that will be introduced and the most basic one is good and services in exchange of cash.
CRED, on the other hand, is popular primarily because it does not have a business model and hipsters are encouraging it because it is innovative to run without a business model.
I mean, I can't even... Damn this is beyond dumb.
Also, they only hire people from Tier I (IIT and IIM).
I once applied and got a rejection in literally 5 minutes stating that since I am not from top college, they are not interested in my profile.
I don't even know what to make of this. This boggles my mind.
For anyone interested, they were invite only and created a hype of waiting list, but then hipsters started inviting each other in masses so I guess they made it public.

Don't people learn the basics of how things work anymore ?!
I am cleaning this project, where some juniors have implemente a lot of the code.
Apparently, the way of deleting an entity from the database is:
1) SELECT the entire row and cast it to a model class
2) CONVERT that model class to a DTO class
3) READ the Id property from the DTO class
4) SELECT the entire row, again, and this time cast it to a DTO class
5) CONVERT that DTO class to a model class
6) Use you pancy-pants ORM delete method using the entire model class as input argument..
FUCK YOU !
inb4 what about reference checks ?
- Nope. That is done separately using only the Id
inb4 what about checking if someone else has altered it before deleting
- Nope, the entire entity is not used for that either.3 -
Is it me or software subscriptions make developers lazy?
There is a great photo editing software: Capture One. Every year they release a new major version, so users need to buy an upgrade. In the past developers packed a bunch of big changes into major update, also they released 3 minor updates yearly, and every minor update brought some cool features. But then they added subscription model which was cheaper then perpetual model. And at the same time major updates became not that cool. Developers started to add enterprise features needed by museums, features involving other camera brands users, changes targeted at newbies and so on. For perpetual model users most of these changes are not worth 80-255 EUR yearly (depends on license type and offs) but is ok for subscription model users because they continue using the software and even small updates and enhancements are fine for them.
Not every major update is that weak but many of them are not worth upgrade. And developers are not motivated to do more cool stuff because subscription model users will continue paying for their subscriptions.1 -
I wonder what is going on in the minds of inexperienced developers. It must be very interesting.
I just read this bit of code
The task was to implement a certain schema into a database. They were given an ORM library, and several tutorials explaining what an ORM was and how it did it.
The result were these 3 models:
- A defaultUser with all of the defaults values for the User model. It wasn't even supposed to be instantiated, just accessed by `defaultUser.fields.username.default`
- another default table for another model.
- The "main" model, containing all other models in the form of JSON fields that would contain an array with other JSON objects that would represent the instances themselves.
I will say though, they made a home-brew ORM with (most of) all the logic a normal ORM has by parsing through the "main model", except, of course, common sense2 -

When I was making 3d floor planner I needed to cut holes in walls to make doorways. I couldn’t use 3d model of hole cause there isn’t 3d model of empty space and the hole itself required to be with adjustable size so I hacked backend model of door to add some data with empty 3d model and stored all of the positions instead to load that and cut those holes on walls manually.
So it become door without door model. Doorway.
It worked like a charm. -

I design 3D CAD models in my office system. I need to keep saving the files every few minutes because software licenses are floating and once lost, I may lose data.
But another bigger problem is that we need to disable proxy to connect to VPN and work online. And the proxy always turns itself ON, every few minutes and if by chance you saved the file without turning the proxy OFF. Well then OFF goes all the work since you last saved. Because then CREO just stops responding.2 -

I wonder if anyone has considered building a large language model, trained on consuming and generating token sequences that are themselves the actual weights or matrix values of other large language models?
Run Lora to tune it to find and generate plausible subgraphs for specific tasks (an optimal search for weights that are most likely to be initialized by chance to ideal values, i.e. the winning lottery ticket hypothesis).
The entire thing could even be used to prune existing LLM weights, in a generative-adversarial model.
Shit, theres enough embedding and weight data to train a Meta-LLM from scratch at this point.
The sum total of trillions of parameter in models floating around the internet to be used as training data.
If the models and weights are designed to predict the next token, there shouldn't be anything to prevent another model trained on this sort of distribution, from generating new plausible models.
You could even do task-prompt-to-model-task embeddings by training on the weights for task specific models, do vector searches to mix models, etc, and generate *new* models,
not new new text, not new imagery, but new *models*.
It'd be a model for training/inferring/optimizing/generating other models.4 -
Fuck off slickplan. Your subscription model is not for the little guy. i love your site map builder, but I cant justify $118 a year for my 6-8 annual site maps. i’ll use keynote. if you price stuff properly then you’d have more subscribers. greedy cunts. it tends to be the way with a lot of online services. people will gladly pay, but it’s gotta be of value. you think twice when you start getting pricey.

Lets take onlyfans system for example. They have fans and creators. How is database models supposed to be structured? Whats the correct way.
1) a User model that contains all users of all roles, but differentiates them by Role ENUM
2) a separate Fan and Creator model, each having their own unique attributes, while each extending an abstract base User model class that has all the common attributes that both models should use
The 1st approach is simple but gets very large and difficult to maintain and view all the attributes cluttered in 1 class. Not to mention how some attributes will never be used for a user who registered as a Fan.
2nd approach is more modular and easier to understand and maintain by knowing exactly what attributes to put for each model. However problems occurs when you try to join tables and stuff start to become overengineered14 -

How does devRant makes their money?
Hypothesis 1: they word count our rants to identify most well known tech terms and sell it to hiring companies and consulting firms.
Hypothesis 2: they aggregate rants on an specific management fad or technique and sell it to management research and consulting firms
Hypothesis 3: currently burning through investor cash and plan on filling the place with ads when that runs off.
Hypothesis 4: something along the lines of "devs of the world, unite!"
Or is there another way?10 -

In typescript (angular) if i have a table USERS in the database and in typescript when i model this table
1) is it a good practice to write all fields exactly like i have in db table column?
2) in typescript am i supposed to write those fields as a class or interface and when should i use class and when to use interface?

Reading comments here and subsequently looking here I’m wondering if I’ve been doing MVC wrong. I’ve always thought the View calls data from the Model. However I see people load model data and then call the view via the controller.

Any idea to get around the cluster storage limitation?
I have to train a model on a large dataset, but the limit I have is about 39GB. There is space on my local disk but I don't know if I can store the data on my computer and have the model train on the cluster resources.1 -

Learning vue and it's lovely, except FUCKING V-MODEL I'm literally 10 hours of tutorials in and I still have no clear idea what the thing does, I'm pretty sure it's like 2/10 complexity thing but someone just HAD TO name it V-MODEL so that it doesn't give you a slightest hint of the actual functionality, like you might as well have named it v-cable or v-oompaloompa, it would have the exact same information value (none).3
-
How do you guys like to name things, do you prefer being specific/verbose or generic? Say, we have a vue component to which we need to pass props. Would you prefer:
<todo-list todo-model="TodoModel" />
or rather:
<todo-list model="TodoModel" />
For me, the first is easier to search for, the other is more elegant and decouples what is happening from why is it happening.5 -
React's useMemo, useCallback are just sad attempts at patching up a bad reactivity model. We should seriously move on from this hot pile of garbage.4

I have a question about modeling a UI to code
Lets say you have a UI finished
Now you need to model it to code
For simplicity ignore functionality just focus on designing the model classes
For further simplicity Imagine that the UI is grouped into material cards.
Lets say the UI of the User Profile Page looks like this:
1) HEADER
- user profile banner
- user profile image
- username
- first and last name
- total posts
- total likes
- button to add to favorites
- dropdown to report user
- button to share profile
2) BIO
- short description
- user birthday
- location
3) ANNOYNCEMENTS
- "X% off on Y"
- "going live at X:YZ"
- etc
4) GALLERY
- group of images posted on profile timeline
5) TIMELINE
- text/video/audio
- number of likes on post
- user profile image
- username
- user first and last name
- post date
- etc
---
Now im having a mixed feeling what is right thing to do. In my User model i have a date of birth field among other fields as well as profile image url to s3 bucket. This means that i already have half the information for HEADER card from User model, but now i would need to create a Profile model to fill in the remaining fields.
Especially for BIO card:
- short description (Profile model)
- user birthday (User model)
- location (Profile model)
Is this weird? Mixing data with 2 models on 1 page on 1 or multiple card sections?
This feels messy to me and as if im gonna hit a wall if i continue long enough like this. A better solution to me is to have a Profile model handle everything on the Profile page and be able to cover all cards and fields on each card. But this doesnt seem like a realistic or possible way to do it since specific fields are required for User model.
Am i overcomplicating and overthinking this shit?
Tell me is it normal to mix 2 or more different models to show data in 1 card on 1 page or how would you suggest doing it better?6 -

Our Prof has written a "Bandmodell" (band model in English) it should represent a escalator. So we have to do some practical coding challenges and the first one was an escalator control. Everything alright but after that we had to do a timer and had to use his buggy band model just because it had a text field for console output.
Why can't we use the console, if everything our application should do, is printing the elapsed time. -

I recently started working on laravel. As the community says it was easy to get along with the framework and its methodologies. But then i had to do multiple login with framework in same domain.
Oh man, i spent a week to make it work. All those guards and middlewares realted to login was driving me crazy. The concept was clear, but somehow the framework was like "You! I shall make you spend a week for my satisfaction". The project demo was nearing and i was doing all kind of stuff i found. Atlast after continous tries it worked. Never in my 4+ years as a developer i had to face such an issue with login.
So here is how it works,if anyone faces the same issue:
(This case is beneficial if you're using table structures different from default laravel auth table structures)
1. Define the guards for each in auth.php
Eg:
'users' => [
'driver' => 'session',
'provider' => 'users',
],
'client' => [
'driver' => 'session',
'provider' => 'client',
],
'admin' => [
'driver' => 'session',
'provider' => 'admins',
],
2. Define providers for each guards in auth.php
'users' => [
'driver' => 'eloquent',
'model' => <Model Namespace>::class,
'table' => '<table name>', //Optional. You can define it in the model also
],
'admins' => [
'driver' => 'eloquent',
'model' => <Model Namespace>::class,
],
'client' => [
'driver' => 'eloquent',
'model' => <Model Namespace>::class,
],
Similarly you can define passwords for resetting passwords in auth.php
3. Edit login controller in app/Http/Controller/Auth folder accordingly
a. Usually this particular line of code is used for authentication
Auth::guard('<guard name>')->attempt(['email' => $request->email, 'password' => $request->password]);
b. If above mentioned method doesn't work, You can directly login using login method
EG:
$user = <model namespace>::where([
'username' => $request->username,
'password' => md5($request->password),
])->first();
Auth::guard('<guard name>')->login($user);
4. If you're using custom build table to store user details, then you should adjust the model for that particular table accordingly. NOTE: The model extends Authenticatable
EG
class <model name> extends Authenticatable
{
use Notifiable;
protected $table = "<table name>";
protected $guard = '<guard name>';
protected $fillable = [
'name' , 'username' , 'email' , 'password'
];
protected $hidden = [
'password' ,
];
//Below changes are optional, according to your need
public $timestamps = false;
const CREATED_AT = 'created_time';
const UPDATED_AT = 'updated_time';
//To get your custom id field, in this case username
public function getId()
{
return $this->username;
}
}
5. Create login views according to the user types you required
6. Update the RedirectIfAuthenticated middleware for auth redirections after login
7. Make sure to not use the default laravel Auth routes. This may cause some inconsistancy in workflow
The laravel version which i worked on and the solution is for is Laravel 6.x1 -

Anyone have a Laravel bug where CRUD routes don't work with model binding? I have a weird issue where only CRUD routes give 404s if also using a model binding, even if I rename them to something else.
The routes exist in route:list and work if I remove the binding, but I need it in this use case. -
ML and NLP people I need some help bc I’m stupid
I want to build a model that is trained on a set of images and captions for those specific image.

How do I train something like this? Do I use an object recognition model to understand what’s in the image as it’s features?1 -

Does something like this exist in the NodeJS ecosystem:
- Reads js-based ORM model definitions (e.g. ones defined by sequelize.define())
- Syncs the database's tables with said model definitions without using migrations
I've built something like this and it seems revolutionary, but I wanna make sure I'm not reinventing the wheel.4
