Really want to get shit done today.
Lets browse Spotify for 3 hours to find good focus music.
Spend 2 hours designing a new IDE color theme and inspections which should really help me do code reviews faster
Oh, lunch time!
Maybe after lunch I should read some random clickbait blog posts on organizational paradigms.
...
And now I'm stranded on devRant. 😫13 -
Don't get too comfortable.
If your workplace isn't much of a learning environment, it's either time to learn on your own time or leave that workplace.
Don't be arrogant with those who are less tech savy. If your boss/cowoker doesn't understand, at least give them them a chance ☺.
Be kind to new developers who make mistakes; you were in their shoes once.
Realize there's more to life than just designing and implementing software. Don't let other areas of your life suffer just because you're a godly developer.3 -
Client: I want the best.
Me: *starts designing a complex and pretty neat website*
Client: I don't like that. I want this. *shows me website design from 1998*
Me: *cries myself to sleep*4 -
First internship: accepted within two weeks, only got to do Google translating and fired after five weeks for bs reasons.
Grade: bad.
Second internship: accepted right after the interview. Rewrote websites to their newest cms, not that fun sometimes but alright.
Grade: pretty alright.
Third internship: was accepted without asking after a successful pilot program from my study. Designing and developing a huge back end system, done some smart light bulb hacking and get to solve server problems.
Grade: Great! Just one little thingy: they said I should stop doubting myself because "you're a great dude and programmer!"
It's getting better and better!3 -
Our Adobe Illustrator teacher(he taught us a bit of Photoshop before), tasked us with entering a contest for a logo design. The company's name is synonymous to amber in my mother tongue, but instead of it doing something related to that they partnered with T.V. services etc and are doing things in the field. The limitation of the contest is that we have to use a specific color in the amber range(given with the CMYK and Pantone values), and if the design ends up a success, one gets nearly 500$.
I have an idea, but I don't know how I will be going about doing it. I'm not great at either design or drawing. My skills in drawing don't match up with my ideas...
I'll still try it.14 -

A couple of weeks back, I met some of the kids from my old school. They had joined together to form a small team and were designing and deploying websites for local businesses.
Turns out that they were mailing each other and using Dropbox to manage the source code. This had been going on nearly for an year.
I spent a couple of hours showing them how to use git and gitlab. Basics on committing, pushing, pulling, branching and merging.
I will never forget the look on their faces! They had seen God and its name is Git.7 -
To all the C++ programmers who haven't read "Modern C++ Design" by Andrei Alexandrescu yet, READ IT! Its great. To me, it opened up an entirely new approach to designing classes with a whole new dimension of possibilities. And it reads really well! Sometimes I got shivers because the code was so sexy 😅😂😂14

In few hours I was with client showing his website after long time coding and designing.
Client: I think this is it, here your final $$
Me: Me thanks sir and bye
A guy came in.
Client: Oh! Wait, this guy is our it expert let see if he have any advise.
Me: Oops! Okay
Guy: So this website will showcase our products
Me: Yes,
Guy: What about security because I just got news that Russian hacked one big company.
Me: I don’t think Russian have time to hack your one page website
Out of the door...3 -
I'm a backender. I fucking hate everything relating to designing, UI/UX designing and especially frontending.
I can't stand it when interfaces look bad/are off, have bugs and so on.
I just can't stand that stuff but the irony is real 😅5 -
So I’m working on an app with a friend who is designing it and I spent a week building a custom segment control as a menu bar. He said that it looked nice but he got inspiration to make a tab bar instead 😑
Cheers to the dev life2 -
-Let's start making the game!
-Yaay
-We should focus on performance optimization!
-But we don't have anything to optimize yet..
-Performance optimization!!!
1 month later
-OK you were right, we can't focus on performance now. We need to start making this game!
-Finally!
-So we're in pre-production now, let's do some R&D!
-Awesome, I wanted to start designing our workflow for adding new content, and maybe also loca..
-NO! That's unimportant! We must do R&D!
-OK what should we Arr-and-Dee?
-Performance optimization!!!5 -
Spent all day designing my website only to delete it all because I didn't like it... Day well spent...8
-
3 people for developing the prototype including me.
One person knows unity. He started modeling the terrain in that.
Another person knows 3D modelling. He started designing the bots.
I don't know unity or C#. I started implementing the logic :/
It was the worst experience but learned shitloads from it in 2 days.3 -
I caught my client SLASH boss SLASH project man SLASH designer SLASH "I want to make facebook but better" designing with microsoft word
That explain the calibri font in their logo9 -
I kid you not, one of my designer friends dipped his toes into coding, he ran into a problem...
Wondered why the following function wasn't returning a random number...
public Int getRandomNumber(){
return 4;
}

Hating WordPress is cool these days, but:
1) Shitloads of themes for clients to choose from (I'm not good with designing and where I live you are more likely to meet a unicorn than a front-end developer that can code).
2) Non technical people can understand it's admin interface without lots of explaining.
3) Huge community makes it extremely easy to find answers even when looking for pretty specific stuff.
For me it's a valid option when making something simple.18 -
When you are so fed up with your software you start designing hardware.
Ok honestly I just wanted to show of my modeling skills. Going to 3d print this soon.11 -
I'm working on my author website and I really suck at designing. So, can you give me your opinions? I can take honesty, even if it's harsh.
So, ugly or decent? What do you think?52 -
Designing an app sure takes some time, but at the end it feels amazing when everything is in place.
Finished this bad boy today9 -

Taking a class on Android Development. I'm mostly teaching myself here. But it's fun to start diving into the world of designing apps. Here's a picture of my current app. It's not much but it's a good start I think13

Something that really grinds my circuits:
When programmers talk about making their own language but they know nothing about programming language theory.
What most people think of designing a language is actually just replacing keywords.5 -
!rant, just wanted to express my excitement to someone
Not sure if this counts but technically I got my first freelance dev job designing an app for a club/small business at school. I have a lot to learn still but I'm really happy about the opportunity3 -
Nearly, nearly ready to deploy self-hosted maps, fucking awesome!
Aaaand now comes the goddamn styling since these will be vector tiles..
I fucking hate designing/styling and I fucking suck at it too. 10 attempts which all pretty much look like shit.
Fucking great.14 -
Spending hours designing an email newsletter only for Microsoft Outlook to continue living in the stone age and fucking ruin it for you.12
-
Me: I fucking hate people using proprietary data formats when there is something more than capable already...
Also me: *Spends an hour designing file structure for a proprietary image format* Hmmm... How can we trim even more bytes off this...
(Designing the format to be smaller than a typical PNG and make it easier to load in data programatically)8 -
Five years learning how to build normalized information schemas to end up designing denormalized DBs.1

My mum - "Something to do with traffic lights"

I just realized that i can do better in designing websites without bootstrap or other CSS frameworks. Thanks to CSS GRID. FTW4

Finally my dream freelance project!!!! I will be re-designing and Then developing an Ecomm site for an organization that supports marijuana legalization. Oh those beautiful pictures will be my pleasure to slice up and implement. Lol3

We're currently designing the ALU of a CPU at the university. After that we will design the registers and combine them all together.
It is like the awakening of a child inside of me. I have tried to understand how computers work in its very details.
That was too complex to me, but I believed that I can and will understand it when I start from somewhere in that field. That lead me to learn HTML and CSS when I was 6 to 8 (idk it has been too many years).
I'm really indescribably fascinated, motivated and happy.6 -
Why do I have no problems writing code and designing databases, but draw a complete blank when trying to come up with a good database username for the code to use?3
-
!rant
My first design work (in Adobe XD)
Design has never been my strong point (implementation or design) but am very interested in designing interfaces.
Don't hold your horses. Criticize this. I want to know what you think about this.17 -
Today, I left the world of QA testing. I start a new job in designing a DevOps system on Monday! Yay!!!4

After designing the new server architecture for our software and the security to go with it, the boss decides we should ask our provider’s solutions architects to see if it is okay, they came back and said it all looks good apart from one part which my manager did and I always said was bad practice.
-
rant!
Gets hired as a C++ programmer. for the past weeks I have been designing UI interface without writing code.
#FML9 -
Most normal people will now be heading home before enjoying their weekend with alcohol and hopefully friends and family.
However I can get pissed on 2 bottles of cider. Friends are busy tonight and family is elsewhere.
So tonight will be spent on designing a side project drunk and tomorrow will be spent repeatedly saying "what the fuck" while reviewing it. Either something good or something terrible will happen. Wish me luck.8 -
when your boss can't distinguish back end from front end web dev
I admit the lines are blurred, but the guy whose background is pure front end probably shouldn't be designing databases, and I'd rather not spend my days trying to make videos autoplay on mobile on the company website7 -
funniest thing today: PM asking me to create a Jira subtask for EACH class / data type of the data model that I'm CURRENTLY concipating / designing in this story.
maybe I should write a Jira / Enterprise Architect integrated tool that updates Jira tasks based on my modeling actions, and count minutes until our sysadmin arrives at my desk.
jeez, that guy really has a fetish for kafkaesque bureaucracy.🤦♀️4 -
After two days of trying to learn Xamarin for Android I realized something... I really hate designing UI1
-
Former boss taught me to care about the place where you work and how to think always as a team and not just to improve my skill.
Current boss taught me that you can be excellent designing and writing code, bur if you don't know how to transmit your ideas to others in a way that they understand, you're pretty much stuck.
Great bosses so far...2 -
I am good as Front End developer, using JavaScript I can do the job, the whole job. Developing, Styling, designing and deploying the web applications is my daily job for few years now...
Today I quit my job for a new position as Back End developer using a new programming language I totally know nothing about it!!!
I am not sure about my decision... but I would like to take the risk....2 -
that moment when you get an idea about awesome app to publish in the play store, but you remember how many other 100 ideas that are waiting for your move to write code, designing. so you give up, now you have 101 ideas waiting...1
-
“Lots of CS undergrad folks imagine their careers are going to be sort of a rockstar/ninja/superhero experience. ‘Just wait ’till the world can see what I can do!’. It has to be this way because, well, ‘I’m above average’, right? You expect long hours of designing and implementing complex algorithms (at least I did). Then you get your first job and WHAM! You get ‘schlonged’ with 20 years old code that appears to be the result of experimenting with hard drugs.”
—Krzysztof Szatan, “Why would you learn C++ in 2016?”, retrieved from http://itscompiling.eu/2016/03/...3 -
I am so bad at web designing (and hate it) that every time I start a personal project, 90% of the time that the project is not finished is because of designing. Of that fucking CSS.6
-
‘Hey let’s use bootstrap’
‘Hey let’s make it pixel perfect to this design’
‘Hey, lets completely ignore bootstrap when designing’
‘Hey lets pile it all on dev while he fights this framework for 8 hours a day instead of working to bootstraps limitations’
I wish people would just accept that if you use bootstrap, you have to let a pixel here or there go for the sake of responsiveness.8 -
I can’t stand how designers insist on over designing <select> elements. No, 50 divs with aria attrs will not make this component as usable as the native elements4
-
Am i the only one who doesnt see how graphql is useful? Yeah you can cut back on data transfer and let the server do the parsing but like, you can do the same if you spend 3 minutes properly designing the backend?6
-
You would think that by now designers would realize that when they are designing a web page at a width of 1600px that it is going to look significantly different on a really large screen...6
-
@trogus are you responsible for designing all these cool avatars?!? they are so simple and sleek and AWESOME how did you do it what do you use?4
-
I ended becoming a backend engineer because I love designing backend systems. High Level Design is ❤️
Also, I just don't have the patience required to conquer CSS 🤯😤5 -
How I felt after spending an entire afternoon planning and designing a new feature for a project only to realize half of my design was wrong after I started implementing it1
-
Job description: designing and building microservices and API contracts for enterprise use. Deep understanding of api/rest design, AWS, etc.
Interview: in this weird IDE while I stare over you, go through and parse this multi-dimensional primitive array using recursion.
...Wtf does this have to do with the role?8 -
Does anyone else have this problem?
I hate designing a personal website. I'm never content with what I made, and even if I feel satisfied a couple of days later I want to start all over. I've gone through at least five complete rebuilds in one year because I can't make up my mind! How do you deal with it?11 -
"The role: You will be designing and building responsive emails on a daily basis using HTML5/ CSS3/JavaScript"
Errrrrrrmmmm...5 -
When i started my work I encoubtered this db(one of 4): more than 20 tables, some with 200 columns literally... EVERYTHING is a varchar 😓.
I'm slowly designing some normalized tables with real fk on new features and projects and people are like: how the fuck did you implement this feature so fast? the other guy spent 3 months designing this form (and I'm just speechless):
The form was some sort of crazyness shit passing input names as "name-of-property" and a file only to check if(name="string") then store a number value to an array and save it as a "number" (actually varchar) on the db. literally more than 50 if statements to do this.
Everything on a single table that made no sense at all.
Just wtf... At least my boss let me start if from scratch cause he we were always having panick attacks every time he needed to do something with it. 😂😂6 -
As a web designer/developer I hate this recent trend of very light gray text fields on forms that have a white background. I don't want to have to peer at my screen for objects. My vision is average, so why would a client want this?5
-
Very few general embedded systems books exist, most are specific to chip, or architecture. Very few cover overall ideas, and concepts that are common across ALL embedded systems regardless of architecture and things you must keep in mind while designing software for them.
I think this a a good book. As a primer for deep diving into embedded systems design philosophy19 -
Sometimes I ask myself why dark theme isn’t the default setting on apps. I mean, light theme WRECKS YOUR EYES!!! How can the common way of designing is to make light theme default or JUST NOT HAVE A DARK THEME!!!!! It’s so unnatural!!!! Anyway...rant dark theme dark theme is the best dark theme is life light theme for light weights baby dark mode8

Keeping my layer names as clean and explicit as my variables when I am designing.
I will never leave an "New Layer 1" untouched!2 -
Why is that when a project deadline has only 2 weeks left, Project Managers starts the project then. Why not start the project when we have 3 or 4 months left for the deadline?
Our Project Manager has this lame attitude that she will start with the sitemap, wire-frame and designing of a website when we have only 2 weeks to the deadline.
What the fuck is going on in here?5 -
Today, a freelance javascript developer at my office told me that he designed a new website for one of his customers. I was intrigued that he is also designing and was very interested.
He showed me some images and I asked how he designed it. I thought he would come up with Figma, Sketch or whatever software, but he showed me the AI prompt.
I told him that he did not design it, but AI did that, prompting AI is not designing. He did not agree and rephrased it as "I made this".
After I said "But if I go to a bakery and ask for a cake with some nice decorations, and the baker is making that, I did not make the cake". He angry said, "You don't understand AI," and put his earplugs in and isn't talking to me since.
Prompting an AI is not creating. The AI/computing power with it's context is creating your stuff..18 -
We where designing next generation of standard PC platform. In the project we wanted to have input from different teams, what was important to them and it was the representative from Human Resourse to speakup,
"I would like to have round bobbles", it took us a while to figure out that he wanted, he wanted to change the shape of all dialog boxes.......
HR has often strange ways if looking at things.1 -
PM in sprint review, after some colleagues complained about having to develop requirements on their own:
you are software engineers, your main task is to design software systems. this is the tricky part. coding is easy... it's a stupid task, i could do it, my nine year old daughter could do it.
shall i feel a bit offended? also i think, he is wrong... i also design while i'm coding, i'm designing all the time.
also, i love coding :( this is the most satisfying aspect of my job.
but then again, i heard there are people who code without designing... even though i cannot imagine how to work like that at all.7 -
my mom thinks designing something with photoshop or illustrator is easy asf, like after 15-20 mins its done. yeah, sure if u want it to not look as good as it can be when you do it 2 or 3 hours. when i design, i dedicate time for it cause believe it or not, when it comes to that, i want everything to be perfect. up to the last 2 object being perfectly aligned to one another.
she wants me to design something for her and be finished in a few minutes and i rejected her because i still have loads of stuff to do. i wouldnt go to university at 9am just to do them if they weren't that important. and now i look like im the bad kid who doesnt wanna help her mom out ughhh irritating asf, its like reverse psychology.
==> I NEED A STRESSBALL RN <==6 -
So our new hardware guy who is being managed by our lead embedded developer had the task of designing me an expansion board for my Linux board. The Linux board uses the 40 pin expansion like the raspberry, bananna and orange pi family and as you all know there are many different types of expansion boards for this.
I said at the start come to me and tell me what you want to connect to before deciding which pin you connect to so it is less work for me with Linux board configs and drivers.............
No no no we will sort it all... erm.....
So today they come ask me if they can use an SPI port for GPIO and I am like erm... why there is plenty of GPIO...
It turns out they have been designing the board based on the pin outs of an expansion board and not the actual connector of the Linux board.. I mean seriously WTF!1 -
Next 30 days : no linux, no developing,no designing... only scratching pens on stupid assignments and licking teachers asses for marks. I hate college exams ;___;12

What's everyone's opinion when it comes to designing modern and/or minimalistic interfaces when using blur or gradients?
I see a lot of people who are hating blur used in UI elements and a lot of people praise the 'death' of gradients, what's everyone else think of these.
I personally love using blur in UI's and do like gradients if done correctly (not 2 colour gradients)
EDIT: I mean what's your opinion on blur and gradients not which one is better :-P12 -
Why is it so hard for people (especially managers) to learn to work smarter not harder....
FIX THE GODDAMN PROBLEM CORRECTLY... THE FIRST TIME SO WE DON'T HAVE TO KEEP FIXING ITS BLOWUPS ON WEEKENDS....
AND STOP HIRING MONKEYS THAT JUST KNOW TO PRESS BUTTONS RATHER THAN DESIGNING FULLY FUNCTIONAL SOLUTIONS THAT DON'T BLOW UP OR LEAVE A TRAIL OF SHIT BEHIND THAT I NEED TO DECIPHER N CLEANUP....2 -
My first project is finished xd. i was in designing but merging it with coding was a great idea. It has got a serial system amd an auto updater. Yep it is a cheat injector xD rate for a guy who just started coding.6

Well done Microsoft
You’ve transformed a product MS Excel from something great into something unusable ..endlessly over designing it with needless fucking icons everywhere…
Just leave it THE FUCK ALONE from 20078 -
Anyone has ideas for creating logos?
I'm looking for prompts so that I'm able to practice making them (and also build my portfolio, but you don't need to know that, right?)
Drop your ideas/prompts and I'll make them for you on my free time and you'll be free to use them on personal projects 😁34 -
Does anyone know good tools to use for designing a site? Like I'm good a developing but I suck when it comes to designing :/13

:3 I'm soooo happy right now! My friend asked me to help her get started in designing circuits and making her own PCBs. Great motivation for me to write a few articles on it 😊... Honestly I would have just asked her to marry me right on the spot if she wasn't a lesbian and didn't have a girlfriend already.
...maan, it bugs me a lot: super cute, same interests, really really intelligent and knowledgeable, great character... Why must everyone care about gender? :( (I don't - just for the context...)4 -
Just finished coding the first parts of my soon to be obviously awesome CMS ,😁 been thinking about it for over a year, been designing it for about a month, did the database schema a week ago and this week I finally got to coding the UI kit, the database migrations and the foundation for the system 😄 and right now, I actually finished the installation page, much waow
Check out the most amazing video of the installation page here lol

Finally getting my first certificate in Udacity , which is a website where you can have courses in coding 🚶🏻♀️💕...
In order to get it I had to first learn the lessons there and then do a final project which involves all the things I learned which was HTML and CSS in making and designing websites in browsers 🍃21 -
why the fuck do these mother fuckers have to give information to the ones responsible for designing the fucking application on the approval fase so I have to redesign some areas and spend a lot of time doing shit I could do once...
and that's not new information... no... I could handle it... it's fucking things you know since your fucking birth!!! fuck you and your shit talk!!!1 -
I started learning Rust and now I know the answer to the question "What would a programming language look like if the engineers were tasked with designing a bad programming language on purpose"16
-
For the first time apart from Data Structures and Algorithms, there was a Machine Coding round where they asked me to create a small app using any language without data persistence or GUI, to see my code designing ability, LLD, code quality, whether I can implement OOP and write modular code and to see how extensible my code will be.
I did well.2 -
I have been awake for 19 hours designing and integrating a client web project user interface. It took me 7 plus minutes to type this rant....
Front end ie easy2 -
I honestly have no problems with UI designers, I really don't and actually respect the work they do..
But god dammit, those fucktards should try designing the UI with actual code rather than photoshop or whatever they use these days..9 -
So I was designing a transformer and was looking up toroidal cores. The one I had in mind was made of a material the manufacturer calls “3E5”. Looking for a material datasheet I found a website with a download link for a material “300000”…
Dear web devs: How the fuck is that even possible? I can see what happened here but who thought whatever they were doing there was a good idea?9 -
Designing the schematics for a cake I'm about to make
Update soon!
Can anyone guess what it's gonna be? It's gonna be a 3d model made from slices7 -
Do any other teen programmers find it frustrating that clients will only hire us for a lower price? I understand it's a matter of experience, but I still feel designing and programming an iOS app is worth more than $2500...5
-
Designer made the layouts reading only half the requirements. We have stuff such as "3 email inputs" where he just stuck one and told us to eyeball it if we needed something else.
Plot Twist: everyobody sucks designing stuff on the dev team, so after explaining that we needed more input from him, he sent us the psds and told us to change them as we saw fit.2 -
If Uncle Bob Martin took all software engineers who are better in designing architecture than him, he could fully book Hilbert's hotel.1

Most unlikely / random thing that happend to you while using your computer (programming/designing/playing)13

Dear theme designers, unless you are designing an app specifically with OLED in mind... Do not use black as a main background colour.
It just looks horrible IMO, key example on good dark theme is the windows store and a example of horrible dark theming is the settings app.
And mini rant over.2 -
So I was reading Julia lang's documentation and got mildly triggered due to this, but then they are not web designing project so I guess it's okay4
-
The day I understand how CSS works will be a lifetime achievement...!!!
Having hard time when you have to design and develop a website at a time... I just hate designing... (No offense.. personal opinion)7 -
ok. been going full steam since December with 1 day off since. managing teams, review designs, designing, prototyping, code reviewing, mentoring, and doing project. management. i get that it's a "flat" org structure but hire proper PMs and BAs instead of trying to pinch pennies. all the while, i see marketing with deeeeeeep pockets spending money on anything like mommy and daddy are funding their spring break getaway. i need time to disconnect and recharge my spirit.2
-
Imagine coding being like designing. Customers would look at your code and say vague things like: "could you make it more cool?", "could you make it more wow?", "could you make the background white?"2
-
Just spent a week designing and building an airbnb clone from scratch in a team of only four people. I don't know what I need more - a beer or my bed 😂4

Start developing one of the two games that I have been designing in my head for the last year or so.1

Joined a big corporate for the first time in my life a few months ago, after years and years in small companies and startups.
Went from designing new creative solutions and finding challenging problems to working on small stupid tasks and obeying a fucking idiotic company culture, that is nothing but words that are not applied in reality. Creativity and enthusiasm are discouraged for the sake of maintaining the status quo.
Probably the worst decision in my life. I don't think I can do this for long.2 -
Not so long ago i met a webdesigner from one of my projects. Before that i did not know that Fonts like FontAwesome exist (except that crap default Font from MS). I was so happy, no more working / designing my applications with fucking images or other workarounds! THANK YOU5
-
So, pissed right now. I spend time writing statements of work, designing the software, and spend a lot of time making sure things are done right. Then have a co-worker that just feels they can half-assed throw some pile of shit together and they have the solution. Then we will just have a meeting on how we are going to use this crap.

Designing a framework: design the framework. Have a bunch of drinks. Try use the framework. Sober up and examine how you’ve butchered it.
Adjust the framework.1 -
So, I'm working on my programming blog.
What do you guys think? - just don't be too harsh, I'm terrible with designing stuff.

Any advice on some good SQL book or resources?
I need to start learning DB designing and theory.
I know jackshit apart from the basic commands.4 -
if you're going to fucking change the project requirements on a daily basis, don't ask me if I ever considered designing the project the way that I initially proposed and you shot down, like you fucking thought of it.1
-
Just got told by our designer that I was wrong about the "mobile first" approach when designing web applications. She insisted that creating unique pages for each platform was the best way.
I must have missed that memo.2 -
I know this sounds odd, but I really find algorithms things of delightful beauty.
A creative solution to some very deceptively complex problems.
Sure, some implementations aren't the best, but seeing them after just makes me appreciate the time and effort that must have gone into designing things like Merge Sort, Binary Search, Greedy Algorithms, BST, and Dijkstra's Algorithm.
So! If your code is unoptimal, looks terrible, or is a sheer abomination, take a moment to appreciate the little piece of art you've made before you go and make it better.1 -
During requirements gathering:
Listening.
Writing requirements as stated.
Not designing in my head.
Asking leading questions that validate said faux design. -
I was designing and building a portfolio page for a photographer. He mostly does black & white portraits with either a white or black background so I had the idea of splitting the page into a light and dark side (Star Wars joke definitely intentional).
I worked waaay too long on a *diagonal* CSS wipe animation when the user switches sides and I was quite proud of it.
Half a year later we realize that basically no one has noticed the switch button. Analytics confirmed it was less than 4% of visitors. 🤦♂️3 -

Nothing IN THIS WORLD drives me CRAZIER than you giving me a wireframe or design that is not mobile first! And not even designing to the smallest phone size either! HOW HARD IS IT TO DESIGN MOBILE FRICKIN FIRST3

I just don't get people designing database tables using VARCHAR/VARCHAR2 for columns that have numeric values in them, then use them as row identifiers.
I simply don't.5 -
Just woke up dreaming of designing and coding a portfolio website for my hobby photography with a simple GUI and a powerful automated backend. I guess I know what I'll do the next few days :D1

The downside to personal projects: it reminds me of how bad I am at designing UIs. I have no idea how to make things look good or where to put components. :/2

I love designing and developing software but man, I envy blue collar people sometimes. I know their jobs are hard but working with your hands and working 9 to 5 and then live your life from 5 to 9 is awesome..
Especially considering that in Europe, I have 14 years of experience and make maybe 10k more than my blue collar friends after tax. If it was just for the work-money ratio I'd become a carpenter..
But over all... 🎶I shoulda been a cowboy 🎶8 -
Devs these days, go all fancy with tech, cutting edge Uber cool shiny toys for designing a system.
Right tool for the right job is a passé. Now, the more you stuff bleeding tech buzz words, the design attracts admiration from bewildered management. [QUOTE] Again, nothing is true, everything is permitted.
Common sense is the craft and simplicity is the soul of efficiency.5 -
Spend several months designing an alternative approach to string matching/parsing not based on parser combination or Regex. Benchmark and profile the ever living hell out of it. Find out the performance is highly competitive with FParsec and far easier on memory than either approach. Discover FParsec responds very badly when failing. Document all of this, do a presentation on the design. Upload video of presentation with links to it on a few sites. Presentation gets downvoted, and receive hatemail. Yay.18
-
Actors/Use cases and analysis modeling approaches as a whole are for retards that require pictures for everything they do.
Designing this shit is time consuming and should be delegated to simple board drawing rather than full featured software that can develop this monumental waste of time.
Change my mind5 -
Lol. Had an exam in college a few weeks ago which involved designing a website on expression web. The Dr responsible for the subject dropped my file and gave me a 0 as a grade and said : "well it's not my fault I lost your file." I laughed so hard XD. Still has a 0 though Lmao.

I'm at my first Hackathon. It's awesome and we're on the final day of a long 3 days!
We're designing an app to encourage sharing transport to and from major events (music, sports, etc).
We have a quick 5 minute survey
https://surveymonkey.co.uk/r/.... It would really help our chances today at the final presentation!
(I'm sorry for abusing this medium, this is an awesome community of people and it would be awesome to have your support on this!)10 -
I have working on a new website for a client that interfaces with their internal systems, meaning we must collect the data fields required by the client. A look over the designs reveals such huge inconsistencies in the data input that we may as well not have bothered designing it.1

So I spent yesterday designing the UI to my app... there were a lot of buttons and options and stuff...
I spent a few hours today implementing the actual logic.... and redesigning the UI based on it.
All the options and buttons disappeared now though... as I apparently didn't really need them after thinking about what I actually wanted the app to do....3 -

Manager: We gotta new module to develop for our existing product. As I'm leading the team, I'll be involved in designing the module.
Me: Okay.
Manager: *Just after a couple of hours, sends me these lame block diagram which doesn't make any sense*
There you go, this is the complete architecture of the module. Start developing it.

What do you guys feel about a web developer completely ignoring Photoshop as a viable resource to aid in developing/designing a website?8 -
I’ve been a freelance graphic designer for a while and in the past months I’ve been moving over into web development.
The biggest challenge has been going from visually designing, to verbally and mentally designing. Definitely a struggle2 -
Android guy here:
I consider myself a solid android developer, however my UX and UI Designing sucks ass, any tips on how I could improve?11 -

Hand-coded or drag-and-drop web design do you prefer? And why?
I have been hand coding for a long time since I started programming. In fact, HTML is my first 'language'. I found that it is very slow to code compared to my normal friends who use Wix - which makes me consider a change.
Plus, I am not very good at designing.10 -
How come that im absolute shit when it comes to designing a webpage but i can make really fucking cool looking android apps, when they are essentially the same thing1

I honestly hate writing code. I hate debugging off-by-one bugs. I hate debugging in general. My fingers are weary from 11 years of this shit. I've spent 1 hour designing + implementing this tool in C, only to have spent 11+ hours debugging this tiny thing.
Ultimately, I hate the precision the damn computer demands. It's a prissy little bitch I want to hate fuck.7 -
I prefer it doing 2 tasks parallely during the initial phase of requirement gathering and design phase.(makes more sense if you are working extremely new system and framework)
1. Keep collecting requirements from clients and understand them.
2. Collect different designing aspects for the project and parallely, build a POC for 2 purpose: to get hands into the new Framework and also as a demo to clients. Working on POC helps in 3 ways: Improving understanding of requirement, improving framework knowledge, and playing around with code whenever bored of designing and reading tons of existing designs..
3. Once primary requirements are clear and fixed, analyse all different designs, if possible I setup meetings with senior devs, principal engineers (they help a lot when it comes to reviews on scalability and reliability of a design)
4. The above design is mostly architectural level. Once design is fixed, then I start taking each component and prepare a detailed implementation design. (Notice that whenever I am bored of designing, I spend sometime in building POC)
5. In detail design, I focus on modularity and flexibility. Anything defined should have getters and setters for example. This will help you reuse your code. Keep the interface between components in your design as generic as possible, so that in case your MySQL is change to Postgre or NoSQL, your design should be able to adapt new features..
6. Instead of building entire project, define feature targets and deliver small features.. this will help you to be in line with the requirements with minimum deviation. -
For a back-end, Java engineer, It's really sad when you are so bored at work that you get excited at the thought of designing SQL views/procs to make prod support easier.

After the long haul of designing, structuring and finally implementing, my side project is done. The only challenge I faced was to not lose interest or get distracted :p

#DailyRant
I don't like Laravel Livewire and the architectural aspect of it. Every key stroke is a call to the server. The freedom of designing the minute behaviours are taken away. (e.g. border-bottom on a certain div). The maintain ability is not good either. Change one variable name and the whole thing breaks and it's difficult to pinpoint where it broke exactly. And the most of all, it's not beginner friendly.
My chest feels lighter now. Thanks. -
*While designing the native app for a web application*
Me: So this feature in the app will basically be the same as Feature1 in the web app, correct?
Client: That's exactly right.
*Presenting the new app to the client*
Client: Why is this feature not behaving like the Feature2 in the web app?
Me: You said you wanted it like Feature1
Client: What? No, it must behave like Feature2
Please help1 -

So I decided to have some funzies over the weekend. Started XCOM 2. Built a team for a mission, spent an hour customising. Then I spent 3 hours going through and not failing miserably even once. The last fucking part of the mission, my favourite sniper dies after getting hammered in the face with a fucking laser beam. Then I lose control of the battlefield and everyone dies. Start again because I'm NOT gonna lose my awesome sniper!
This game is like designing software, planning deployment strategies, and disaster recovery at the same time. Recommended for all devs!6 -
I am currently in the works of designing, building and extending an CRM/MRP system for production lines.
But for some reason I cant seem to find ANY modern sources, papers, books, forums, threads for context on this topic. It’s as if this topic doesn’t exist.
(One thing to point out is that there are sources for business wise analytics but am looking design wise)
I am starting to think that i am not googling it correctly (what a boomer).
Do you have any magic sources, captains of devrant?10 -
I started working for a forex company as a web developer, designer and also a online marketer, so when i was doing the designing part the boss of mine became very happy as he can see the results of my work.

I'm an engineering student in my final year now.. and there is something that I felt I missed learning throughout the course of 4 years.
How many of you believe that there is a need for non technical courses like UI/UX designing to be a part of curriculum ?
I conducted a workshop recently on UI/UX design but was surprised how majority of them were just clueless about design in general.
Atleast for all the Indian ranters here .. im pretty sure all of you would agree how pointless the first year is. Utilising it for something as trivial as basic user profiling and designing .. according to me makes sense..
What say ? Any other subjects you feel should be a course in your University ? ( Now my knowledge spans to colleges here in India , Lett me know if it's any different outside of here ) 🙂5 -

learned about antd on Reddit when it had version 4.0.1 released and so far rewriting from scratch the frontend of one of my products has been a breeze, specially since I'm using Typescript.
I'm absolutely happy with the results so far, and how forms are managed within the library makes Formik redundant, great!
having React Cosmos is helping a lot when designing my components too.
In general, I'm really happy! -
My client will not let me design a product before making it live.... "Make it live so I can see it, then I will fuck about with the design (pixel by pixel) and THEN I will work out what the product should actually do."
WTF?!
Oh and when I do insist on designing before building, they insist on me doing that in POWERPOINT..!!
Why am I still doing this fucking job?4 -
The concept of designing and building a testable application is apparently a very alien one to my colleagues.
1. The application cannot be used without gigabytes of data.
2. The application must be fully connected to all external systems at all times.
3. Convention over configuration is unheard of, so if you manage to achieve the above, it still takes hours to set up the damn thing.
Apes. -
fuck it, tell me straight.
Can i live into this tech world with poor math skills and no interest in web dev and designing?
my experience as native mobile dev was enjoyable and still is, but i fear that this is not a very broad career choice.
You see their is blockchain, dapps , hybrid apps, webapps, server designing, tensorflow models and Ai models( though they can be integrated with native apps too i guess ) , and many more tech and therefore jobs that rely on knowing about the webdev. and all i know is how to make a decent native java app.
and why the fuck should i join this web dev cult? its such a fucking mess. 8 different types of text sizes sizes, <b> and <strong> being the same thing, do you know about a thing called abstraction? My android studio would give me fucking murder warnings if i even dared to introduce hard coded texts along with code. and here, an html page is basically text + attributes? fucking kill me.2 -
UX/design departments have process, review and do lots of work designing standard look and components for our front end. We use these.
Sometimes when they give us a mockups for new features they break their own rules/components.
Why are you handing me non-standard designs/components, when you made the standard ones and we could just reuse those.2 -
Hey people. I am writing a script(not any computer's script, but just a simple dialogue-script) for an adventure game that I have been thinking of designing. But It's a dialogue based game , so i need someone with Fine grammar to edit it.(i guess it's kinda visible from this rant how aweful my English is )
I can't say it is open source ( kind of like my first amazing idea that i want to get recognized for ), but the thing is, i won't be earning from it and I will definitely give you an equal recognition for contribution.
Can anyone Help?6 -
I'm learning a new lang. Read all of the introductory guide. Have an algp to implement.

The idea of buying a gaming computer came from my desire to play FS2020 and sim games like Snowrunner.

Atleast, it would feel nice to know that i can play if i wish to.
Maybe I'll do video editing and 3D designing with laptop.8 -

How would you call this role? Product Owner? Graphics Designer?, Both? Neither?
I work for a small startup besides university and we do need a person responsible for how site looks. But then again we also need a product owner for the frontend. So why not combine these roles? A person who's responsable as product owner for all the frontend related bits plus does the designing. Initially this person would work with just one frontend dev, possibly more over time.
Question:
- How would you call this role/job?
- What would be an appropriate salary?
- How would you evaluate an application to this role?3 -

Sometime back, I tasked a junior to work on designing a quiz application for a college competition. Lo and behold, he had used a POST request for every call to an API and this made the code very buggy and untestable. Here's the conversation that I had:
Me: Dude why is everything a POST request?
Junior: POST is a lot secure right? Nobody would be able to read anything from the request.

Being a front end develop of mostly PHP projects and also designer of everything for the company, probably best that I use OS X most of the time.
My place doesn't agree. They realise that I can't use Windows because it's support of PHP is laughable at best. However, they don't understand how difficult it is find a good quality piece of Ubuntu software for designing responsive websites. It just doesn't exist as far as I'm aware.23 -
Hi there everyone am Shreyas a CS student. Am a C# guy and learn the parts of language every day (recently learning Asp.net) and having a lot of intrest, knowledge and passion in buildling stuff in it with WPF, Xamarin. And also i do practice a lot in it everyday.
But recently I am getting a lot more intrest in UI/UX designing. Am finding myself watching more UI/UX designing (mostly in Adobe Xd and illustrator) videos on YT (dansky YouTube channel specifically) rather than C# which I used to watch in early days.
So what is your suggestion on it? Should I learn the UI/UX designing basics. Will it help me in future, if I become a developer on building applications for mobile and desktop in C#?
Am pretty confused with it? Should I learn it or not?2 -

Guys, can any of you give me objective insights whether switching from Ubuntu + Windows to MacBook will be worth it?
I'd really love to be able to use designing tools like Photoshop and Illustrator while doing web development works at the same time, but I'm not sure whether it's worth the price. What do you think?5 -
After a week of designing an API to our system for another team followed by redesigning it because they 'know what they need when they see it' I think I understand the pains all of you guys who work directly with customers go through what leads to exactly one question : How did you manage to never kill anyone?1

A note to the team designing recommendations on google ads:
Just because I search for deep learning concepts for personal learning, does not mean I will be purchasing every paid online data science course on the planet.7 -
What percentage of your time is spent actuslly coding?
In a week, I spend not more than 1 full working day writing codes. The rest is spent doing PoCs, designing (LLD and rarely HLD), solutioning and deployment.1 -
So I've been looking at web dev job apps recently and reading over some of the requirements needed and almost every company advertising for a web dev is also wanting a web developer who is also a 10/10 web designer... this proper irks me as after doing a course which helps you ease easily into the web industry being a competent designer wasn't a requirement.
Why is it that to be a web dev now days you need to be also good at designing?1 -
Fucking bike-shedding.
You design a nuclear reactor and ask for feedback and nobody says a fucking thing.
You design a bike-shed and you get feedback from every idiot and his brother and it never ends.
How do you prevent bike-shedding on your projects?
I am going back to designing nuclear reactors… GAWD!2 -
I want your opinion about designing a web.
What is better for you?
1) A web page with 2 files (e.g. page1.html and page2.html), so the client must send a request for each content.
2) A web page with 1 file (e.g. page.html) with all the content in divs with 'display: none' and switch between them wth javascript.
Thanks!13 -
Did this interview with a tester for internship. Started to get the feeling that this person maybe should have chosen another education.
On the question: "What do you like with testing?", the answer was "Designing templates for bug reports".
Guess it's gonna be a quite boring career.
And no, we didn't hire. -
Why the hell Microsoft browser support the standards created? The website which I had designed worked well in my mobile (Android) and PC (Ubuntu) then I just opened it in friends laptop which had windows 10 and guess what? Transition failed to work. Why the hell Microsoft? Why the hell?3

TL;DR, which is the best JS templating library?
I've been using React for a while since I like the library's ideology and how simple designing templates is. But for the sake of future technologies, I've been wondering if I could get out of React and start coding with native JS.
The only problem is constructing the DOM, which gets super ugly with vanillaJS. So, I want to ask the experienced members of devRant which library would best suit my use case.6 -

I find it really annoying I'm so bad at designing applications, I always have to resort to CSS frameworks as when I try to design applications it looks awful and inconsistent. And also as I'm in secondary school still (high school) when I'm making stuff I have to work on front end as I'm the only person making it and normal users don't like using the terminal. The usage of some CSS frameworks, like bootstrap, is sometimes frowned upon.3

Electronics question:
Potentiometers
Hey guys. I'm searching for potentiometer calculators but I have a problem...

Question: What do you guys think of this logo?
Anyway, here's my rant..
I'm starting to get pissed off with my relative for whom I'm doing a project.
He's coming up with the ugliest logo and fonts I have ever seen in 2018.
I mean it's business so I don't have much say in what he decides esp since he seems to have taken it upto himself to design the logo and managed to make a logo suggestion I made even terrible.
I have told him multiple times to avpid the knockoff wierd fonts and use simple fonts that looks normal.
And yet, he comes back everytime by changing colors in one of the letter n the words 🤦♂️
Maybe it's because we are from different generations and we have different visions on what it should look like.
He is the kind of guy who goes on and on about how he used computers and internet back in the 90s everytime we meet!
He probably uses MS Word to design the logo! This is the newest logo he came up with.
If I were to be honest, I would be probably rude in his eyes, since it is his "work".
What do you guys think of this logo? Can only show that much of the logo to maintain some privacy.14 -

I cant wrap my head around designing a database system from scratch. Period.
I use ER diagrams to do it. But still i can't figure this piece of shit out.
It usually goes in these steps:
1) i design a very simple minimal system, turns out it works but HELL NO how unsalable it is. Literally its so statically built that i have to redesign the whole infrastructure and models from scratch
2) i redesign from scratch but this time i overengineer it. Overcomplex as fuck. So complex i get lost easily and have to redesign the whole shit all over again this time copying others similar infrastructure with help of chatgpt
3) chatgpt of course fucks everything up even more to the point that my shit can't compile anymore. Fuck this shit
I think i lack the correct way of thinking and approaching this. College has taught me bullshit and confused me even more which is why im so fucking lost. Can someone explain me How to think in the correct mentality when designing an ER database system from scratch.
How do i properly design a scalable database infrastructure as ER diagram for a subscription and chatting models, similar to onlyfans infrastructure?9 -

Why there is always a communication gap between designers and developers? A designer should always think from a developer's perspective if a design is feasible or not. Just making a mess of waves in the front end won't make a good design.5

I've had a hard time getting on board with Google using the "Yes, and..." approach in design sprints. IMHO, it's tough to apply a stream-of-consciousness from improvisational theater to building software. Two completely different arenas.
Personally, I've always applied the "No, because..." approach, designing pessimistically/programming defensively, while still being innovative, creative & empathetic. I get the psychology of public criticism making teammates butthurt & stymieing future contributions...but that's maturity.10 -

Hosted my very first project, developed back in Aug18.
It has been a wonderful journey as a programmer.
Link to my first web development project(I should say web designing cuz it doesn't have any db XD):

"I love designing, it is something which permeates my whole living, whether it is simply choosing the colour of my clothes in the morning or organising my household. Design to me is akin to beauty, an externalisation of my inner process regarding beauty & contentment with life." - Martine Moeykens

Grrrrrrr!!!!!!! How you frustrate me SQL SERVER REPORTING SERVICES! Designing a report changed query on dataset to include new field, fields started displaying all sorts of random stuff, booleans in text fields etc. Just spent 20 mins "checking" by rebuilding the first few bits of report and first dataset it's something weird with SSRS. Bye bye Sunday evening!!!

In my first job another junior dev and I (junior at the time) were assigned the task of designing and implementing a user management and propagation system for a biometric access control system. None of the seniors at the time wanted to be involved because hardware interfacing in the main software was seen as a general shit show because of legacy reasons. We spent weeks designing the system, arguing, walking out in anger, then coming back and going through it again.
After all that, we thought we would end up using each other, but we actually became really good friends for the rest of my time there. The final system was so robust that support never heard back from the client about it until around 2 years later when a power outage took down the server and blew the PSU.
Good times. -
Can anyone advice me, is web developement a good career option? What languages should i learn to make a career in web development? Are web designing and web development the same?8

Whenever the test is to see what clarifying questions they'll ask.
Give a dev in an interview setting a vague task that needs refining before it can be meaningfully attempted, and 95% of them will just plough in and start designing / writing code.
FWIW, I don't personally like these sorts of questions in interviews, as the situation is very different to reality (and therefore I don't believe it's a true reflection of what questions a user may ask in a work environment.) They are *very* common however, and a lot of devs don't seem to be aware. -
A wish from Genie?
- Understand a library/language immediately.
- Ba perfectionist when designing the infrastructure in a software.
- Not being lazy to write documentation.1 -

Just a question...
I’m using semantic-ui as a framework for web designing, but is it necessary to learn to create my own design from scratch?
Need your opinions fellas. -
Any good tips on how to prepare for a system design technical interview?
(So for questions like "how would you go about designing and implementing an app like LinkedIn?" for example). -

When the teacher asks you to design a class hierarchy and after a week designing he comes and says "You know what? We'll work with a design a I made" and throws your design to the trash2

"If you want to be the designer that stands out of the rest, do something more than just designing. Make an interesting project like for charity, start an agency, hold an exhibition, start a design festival or build a site like Behance. Become interesting." - Jennifer Cirpici3

I want to finally implement a minor pet project I spent some time designing a while ago. It's a web service based on encrypted data handling. I'm willing to get out of my comfort zone (that is .NET) and practice the use of different tech. What do you recommend for it?1
