A friend needed to test an API so, I told him to download Postman to start testing POST request and he ask if he needed to download Getman for testing the GET ones 🤣17
-
A client asked if we could change their nameservers to wix's ones.
"we want to move to wix because one of my best friends can create a professional site there"
My eyes are bleeding and I think I just spontaneously got aids AND cancer at the same time.
Send help. Please.30 -
Never forget:
There are only two kinds of languages: the ones people complain about and the ones nobody uses.
A quote from Bjarne Stroustrup8 -
We just had a terror attack here in Stockholm. I'm stuck in my office. Stay safe everyone and take the time with your loved ones.30
-
To those who say game is not an art, we paint worlds with ones and zeros in real time that you can get lost in for hours. If this is not art, nothing is.2
-
The best APIs are the ones which aren't versioned and completely change key features overnight.
Woke up this morning to three broken client apps. Yay.2 -
Fuck frontend. Writing a new service thingy and while the backend was done in about one fucking hour, I've been working on the frontend for hours now because frontend fucking hates me and that feeling is fucking mutual.
Grrrrrrr. (and respect for the ones who can properly develop nice looking interfaces)13 -
You might know by now that India demonetized old higher value notes and brought in new one. The new ones easily tear off easily and generally feel cheaper and less reliable than pervious ones.
One interesting thing people discovered is that rubbing it with cloth makes the ink transfer to the cloth. Sign of crap printing. Here's government response:
The new currency notes have a security feature called 'intaglio printing'. A genuine currency note can be tested by rubbing it with a cloth; this creates a turbo-electric effect, transferring the ink colour onto the cloth
TL;DR: its not a bug, it's a feature7 -
ahaha. The white Slack emoji skintone is frowned upon at $work, and we're encouraged to use the yellow one instead to be "inclusive" -- but fear not, the brown ones are totally fine.
Gotta love woke companies.20 -
The time my sister dropped the external HDD with every single picture of our family between 2000-2009.
I was 16 at the time, and it made me paranoid like I am today.
Three offsites backups, and three local ones currently and always trying to do expand.9 -
Happy 100k ++
P.S: please write longer comments, it's a pain in the ass to double tap short ones and it keeps fucking opening them6 -
When I drink and code at home I put "while drunk" at the end of a commit so I know which ones to look back over later. This system worked great for me until yesterday when I included that in a PR for a work repo.8
-
There should be a name for rants about fake stories. Like the ones you read and can smell some bs going on. I suggest frants.3
-
I don't havey Friends , but the ones I have know me inside out.
I turned 18 yesterday , and what did I get for a gift , a literal 5 page C++ Program that my pals lovingly wrote for me. Compiling it right now. Let's see what it's got for me.13 -
Every single diagramming tool.
All the SaaS ones are either way too limited in function, or proprietary vendor-locked.
All the FOSS/desktop ones have a 90s UX experience.
I really want to make a great, comfortable-to-use diagramming tool which just directly uses SVG as the file format, but without the "FUCK IT DOESNT ALIGN CORRECTLY AND WHY IS THIS ARROW BEHIND THE REST" experience...
But I know deep down that it's hard work, and I'll probably get stuck delivering the gazillionth lackluster, bugged diagramming app.20 -
I see software engineering mostly devolving to be simpler syntax, more widespread and reach more range of people, including non-tech ones.
That’s now obviously leading to more crappy javascript code, more abandoned frameworks, libraries, more shitty software and more dev rants.5 -
"An experienced developer is one who doesn't make any new mistakes, but repeats the same old ones over and over."
-
The shirt from the google code in challenge came :D
I'll probably wear it inside only since it's one of those tight and small ones. I like longer and looser shirts because small and tight ones are too revealing.50 -
"[In the future, there will be two types of people.] People who tell computers what to do, and people who are told by computers what to do." - Marc Andreessen
I guess we'll be the ones who tell the computers what to do.3 -
WOW, I can't believe I left for a while and I got that many ++'s!
It's insane!!!
Wait...
Why does it only have ones and zeros?
Fuck, it's in binary 😭😭😭😂 -
Can we get a dark colored background for the avatar, please?
The existing ones are too happy and bright.3 -
Slow, old, spaghetti coded legacy projects that no one has touched for years.
You know those ones where you put your Indiana Jones hat before going in and barely come out alive.2 -
App nearing completion. Code tested, everything's working fine. Ready for release.
The client just calls me and tells me that they have decided to turn the app into two separate ones. Should not be a problem, you developers must have some tricks for that, according to the client. Of course, the release date remains unchanged.
Clients!, finally understand that there's no secret button for turning an app into two separate ones.5 -
Alright, so my company wanted to redesign its old website, so we (the dev team) got tasked with making it happen.
Talking with the people making the marketing decisions for the site (think clients but in-house) :
CLIENT : We don't want any colors, black and white only, it's trendy.
US : Okay, but you actually do need colors for call to actions, to achieve the effect of levels of importance and such.
CLIENT : No colors.
Why would they listen to us, not that we are the experts are anything... Oh and they scrapped pretty much all of our CTA, why would you need those anyways, right?
Sometimes later, while coding the Dealer Locator :
CLIENT : The more important dealers will be shown on the map in black, the ones a little less important in white, and the ones we would rather not send people to will be in blue.
US : In blue? Blue, the only color in a sea of black and white? You do realize that the only thing the user is going to see are the blue ones, achieving the exact opposite of what you want?
CLIENT : We have decided.
(╯°□°)╯︵ ┻━┻5 -
The worst kind of bugs are logical ones, they go undetected, no error, no alert, and when you notice them, it's too late.3

FUCK WEB3, FUCK CRYPTO, FUCK NFTS, FUCK ALL THIS PONZI ASS BIG BULLSHIT!!!!!!!!!!! FUCK YOU WHOEVER MADE THJS!!!! THE ONLY ONES WHO PROFIT ARE NOT THE ONES WHO BUY CRYPTO OR JPEGS BUT THE ONES ON TOP OF THIS PYRAMID WHO CREATED IT!!!!! MIGHT AS WELL CODE MY OWN PYRAMID COIN/JPEG AND SELL IT TO SUCKERS!!!!!!!! Just found a great talk on JS: "Essential JavaScript Debugging Tools", thought other people, especially the ones currently just learning it, might enjoy it.
The whole channel is a sub recommendation anyway, as they always publish great talks and videos for webdev and more.

What if the long term goal of @trogus and @dfox is to create a developer army, hell bent on the destruction of project managers and clients everywhere (except the cool ones).
I mean I'm not saying it's a bad thing. Just wanted to... You know.... Raise some attention.3 -
I feel sad for some of my officemates. They are required to go to office today due to client support stuff, and it's a Sunday. They should be resting, be with their family/love ones/pet/bed, playing games, or whatever they want to do on a rest day. :(8
-
I'm reviewing a PR and it's easy to detect which functions were created with an AI: the ones that have comments.4
-
I've found an affordable flat and it feels like winning the lottery. Before this one I wasn't even getting the overpriced ones!
*discards the tent*9 -
There are 10 types of person in this world: The ones who have read this joke before, and the ones who have never accessed the internet.3
-
there are more kinds of programmers :
the ones that drink coffee
the ones that drink alcohol
and there's me eating sunflower seeds12 -
Electron apps are now “normal” and even considered “better” than native ones.
How the fuck did we get to this dystopian timeline of a situation.8 -
I used to design and program these systems. Some of the first voice responsive ones. I’m so sorry for my crimes against humanity.2
-
Exactly, this meme is so relatable!
I was working with MPAndroidChart (Charting Lib), most of the working functions are deprecated! And new ones are not working -
If I ever deleted some of my rants (most likely one of the deleted ones will be the first one) it's because people from SL and IRL are starting to find me. Lol.
I'm not deleting anything yet tho.2 -
It's easy to multitask these two things.
"Being" a programmer and "being" single.
Trust me, there are no easier ones than these.1 -
When you work for hours to solve a bug, and finally you fixed it, only to have 2 new ones show up to replace it:3
-
Dual monitor windows PC for working/gaming and an ubuntu laptop for on the road. My desktop monitor setup is a bit ghetto tho, ones gloss and ones a matt finish, both different sizes and different heights 😋

Debugging a system error with a good team of fellow developers/devops people is fun.
We had an issue on Friday where we were getting a pretty cryptic error in our error reporting system. A couple of developers and I got together with a couple of devops people and we worked it out well as a team and figured out a pretty complex issue in a reasonable amount of time with everyone playing a solid role.
Nobody tried to steal the show and everyone listened to each other's ideas on what the problem might be. Through and through a great debugging session and made me think about bad ones and good ones I've had in the past.4 -
The past few weeks were not so good to me, but guess what, I got hired today. And now, i'm thankful that i got rejected from the previous ones. Wish me luck on my career as a junior dev. :)8
-
Hey guys, I'm looking for small and cheap vibrators. One that you can use in an IOT project, the size of the ones in smart phones.
My searches on goggle are getting !work friendly results. Any ideas of a shop I can order some? Small miniature motors too.14 -
I would hire all the devs and build an all powerful AI
So devs can come up with better jokes and not repeat old ones, it's clearly the main issue this world faces3 -
Have interview in 1 hour

Open meeting app to set everything up
Windows: I think not. Pereificus Totalus!!

Why do companies use these random new wave of meeting apps instead of the tried and true ones!!4 -
I briefly worked for a fucked up company that had been bought by a coupon company that had outsourced a project to India
The code contained such gems as
If (Booleanvar ==true)
Among many other little things and some really big ones and was a web project written in vb9 -
!rant
Do you folks listen to podcasts? What are your favorite ones? The ones I listen to weekly are Geekrant, Linux Gamecast Weekly, and Linux Weekly Daily Wednesdays (done by the LGC group). I'm looking for more tech related ones, though.7 -
Why is it the case that people who use Linux come across like arrrogant snobby cunts compared to ones who use Mac OS and Windows?9
-
Dev trends themselves.
The more buzzworthy the better, tons of material to rant about and hot air to sell.
(No offense to the ones who actually do this tho),3 -
I love my job as a developer, I think it's the one of the world's most most fulfilling occupations but I procrastinate with personal projects (even paid ones). Is this a problem for anyone else, and how do you beat this?6
-
The three open source apps I prefer over "closed" ones. And that not because they're Open Source but because they are free and awesome.
GIMP2 & Blender & Audacity.
Fuck all the alternatives.
Photoshop & C4D (CC ~800€/y),
Maya & 3dsMax (each ~2000€/y),
Magix with their 100 different shitass software,
and so on..15 -
Bae: Come over
Djikstra: But there are so many routes to take and I don't know which ones the fastest
Bae: My parents aren't home1 -
I like, that many code hosting sites are shutting down (Google Code, Codeplex). This does not mean those sites are bad.
The ones I like and use are GitHub, GitLab, Bitbucket (and most personal ones like Gogs or GitLab CE).
Here is my list of the sites I don't like:
- Sourceforge
- SF
- sf.net
- sourceforge.net8 -
I see a lot of people with stickers on their laptops and I was wondering... anyone else removes every sticker from theirs? Even the original ones like intel or nvidia etc? I always found that a laptop looks "cleaner" without any stickers at all...6
-
I always feel the people who post hate about Java are .Net Developers and then I like to think they are also the ones who complain about Windows just so I can have that moment of irony.7
-
Back in college, one of my professors who was teaching Introduction to UNIX class, said :
"head -n 2 file.txt" displays the first 2 lines of file.txt.
I asked : and to show the last 2 ones ?
"Don't be a fool, +n instead of -n" he answered.
RIP UNIX ...9 -
After two weeks with Ubuntu - I'm done with this. I'm going back to Windows.
Why? Well, it fixes some Windows problems, but at the same time new ones are popping and they are even bloody worse.10 -
https://protonmail.com/blog/...
New "features" coming up in protonmail soon, and even some hidden ones :)15 -

Jase deleting his accounts (yes, that plural) and creating new ones, is the only dR tradition that is alive till date.22

Oh my gawd, it's only been years since this should have been a thing.
But today, since no ones beat me to it, let me share Github's official mobile app - currently taking beta signups for both IOS and Android.
https://github.com/mobile4 -
Fucking teams.
It's shit, it's buggy, it's confusing, threaded conversations suck when there are multiple ones going on because stuff appears out of order and is easily missed.
I hate it with a passion.5 -
More work-related than dev-related:
- Saying "yes" to extra work more often than necessary.
- Wanting to do everything myself and not delegating enough.
- Getting too stressed out.
- Avoiding conflicts and confrontations (even necessary ones!) and not being assertive enough.
- Overthinking everything.1 -
I was one of the 'popular' guys in school you know the cool ones and dumb as fuck. Now I am the nerd one lol. Seems like I found a passion.4
-
Every time the VPN is not working I state loudly what a piece of crap it is. The devOps team sits right behind me and they don't seem bothered. I don't think they know they're the ones who need to fix it.1
-
Merry Christmas you glorious bastards. It has been a quick minute since I have been in this community and I want to say: Ai appreciate you guys, the ones closer to me(you know who you are) I deeply appreciate you. Have a wonderful day guys!3
-
wk22| Tom Scott,
I just love watching his videos. Its always inspiring and getting me into a somewhat good mood.
Even the non tech related ones.2 -
See, there's a difference between scammers that know how to email, and ones who don't. There's a thing called BCC that DOESN'T reveal everyone you're sending the email to. LEARN TO USE IT!

Tfw your Boss had just ordered two oscilloscopes each worth about 1.2k$. And a few days later I show up with my scope, which had cost me like 400$. And he's like: I think I have ordered some garbage. Your's can do just as much as the ones I've ordered!4
-
My biggest obstacle? Stupidity, laziness, willfull ignorance, procrastination.
Sometimes my teammates are the ones guilty of these things too. That, and impossible timetables, but that's par for the course for pretty much all of us.4 -
There was this random image on devRant.
Yepp, it is Brainfuck once again.
For the bored devs among us and for the ones who seek a challenge to learn and have fun... here it is. Solve it on paper like I did in the first comment.19 -
Some many nice and new programming languages out there and even some older ones still get updated but at my university we are supposed to use the ANCIENT AND ANNOYING ANSI C (C89)??! Why...3
-
When you set up a process and find out a co-worker has been ignoring said process for weeks resulting in a lot of the wrong computers being replaced with new ones and leaving a lot of old computers out in the wild.
-
Finally have some time again to make my bot that notifies me of interesting jobs and filters out things like "wordpress", into a dashboard that lists all jobs, automatically removes ones that are gone or have too much bids and much more, so excited 😄4
-
Last monday I started using a mechanical keyboard at my workplace and now the ones who are in my same room probably want to kill me...! 😉2

Next money saving Discovery! I made my own bubble/milk tea. It actually treated like the ones that cost $5 at the mall.... Finally.
The magic was use half and half milk!!13 -
I'm sending my love to all the millions of people out there suffering in silence, ones with unfathomable trauma and pain, all fighting battles known to none. I respect those who decided to end it all rather than to keep waiting for help that will never come to them.

The best AH-HA moment is the ones that you just can't get your mind around and then go for a coffee break.
Come back to your desk and then ... bam! There it is!
Thanks, coffee ☕2 -
That big lie we tell others.. "Let me just finish something here..." (4 bugs solved, 10 new ones and 2h later) "shit!!! I'll be right there!!! Let me just...."1
-
After couple of hours I made a list of different anti virus programs for almost any Linux distro:
And some other ones:6 -
The ones I said hi on microphone, grab wireless headphones and start playing fifa on PlayStation with friend, beat him couple of times and said bye.
Well maybe it was productive overall cause I had lots of fun. -
Trying to resolve merge conflicts and you cant remember which changes are the ones you want to keep. Lesson learned, make sure your pull requests dont sit waiting for weeks while master is happily being worked on.2
-
Got a task named: "Final Changes", made a wünderlist named: "Final Changes v1" just because if PMs thought me something is that the words coming from their mouth and the ones in dictionary have a completely different meaning..
-
That moment when first I started deleting/blocking spam emails and actually began reading the important ones, was the moment I realized I'm growing up!!
-
Yugioh decks became so damn cheap, im really tempted to order a bunch and put together 2-3 good ones.6
-
So opinions: should a software engineer get certifications? I mean, to me they seem like pointless wastes of money, but my coworkers don't seem to think so. I design and write code, why do I need MCSD or whatever? Follow up, if you feel they are useful: which ones and why?4
-
How many computers do you have in your room (currently in use or old ones)?
Mine are,
2 Desktops
3 Laptops
And one RaspPi21 -
Computers are not tools, they're weapons, no ones data is safe, and most people are just oblivious to what's really going on in the Network Security and Data Security sector.4

When you're talking about how awful it is and they think you mean your desk
I have an HP stream
this thing is a McFucking™ potato (and it's HP so i can't even get inside and replace the stock parts for good ones without breaking it)9 -
There are 2 types of developers. The hot drink ones ☕️ and the cold drink ones(CocaCola, Redbull...). Which one are you?12
-
Honestly, I think this one is yet to come for me.
I've had a few bad experiences, but the worst ones are the ones where I couldn't find the time or brain to get some work done properly and therefore did bare minimum, so I basically was driven to shame because my teammates did almost everything.
Second to that, are times where I had to go through drama because teammates were absolutely incompetent or power hungry or inflexible.
Otherwise, it's "live and let die".
Note: I use "teammate" in general sense, equaling "coworker", "colleague", "the guy who's supposed to give me details or access" and "those in on the project" in this rant.2 -
Types of users in devrant with high #++
Type 1. Who posts minimum rants, but each ones get most ++
Type 2. Who posts a lot of rants, but each ones gets low ++
Type 3. Who posts minimum rants, but give lots of comments even if each comment gets low ++
Tyoe 4. Who posts minimum rants, and minimum comments, but both gets high amount of ++
In which type would you classify yourself?
Or did I missed any other type...8 -
Two types of men in this world
The ones admitting to themselves they need a tomboy gf and the ones lying to themselves20 -
My list of open PRs didn't descrease much since the last Rant, when I went through almost all and updated them.
Still 77 open ones.
On the other hand, my PR for the SteamCMD GUI that I had just finished was taken almost immediately!
https://github.com/DioJoestar/...1 -
Some of the worst code reviews I had were at my 1st proper workplace which incidentally was the strictest one! I was such a lazy oaf and hated those.
Still don't like code reviews but I do admit those first ones did me a tom of good.
Nowadays when I am the one co ducting them I tend to be more relaxed and chill and not be a nazi coz I still remember the repulsion of my first ones ^^' -
No indents, except a couple of random senseless ones here and there, nightmare! And I had to debug it😖1

Not a good year for Intel, is it? First the two Spectre variants and Meltdown, now the AMT vulnerability.
/Hugs his AMD systems while unplugging the Intel ones.7 -
What kind of project sizes do you prefer and why? Big one, lasting year(s), or smaller ones, in range of months?5
-
I think I might need to own my own business and foot the bills. That way I can learn why it's a good idea to only focus on the short term costs and ignore the long term ones
-
Let's say *poof* Google is banned from the internet and it's 10years later how would the internet look would it be existing services or do you think new ones would arrive.27
-
Best professors I've ever had were the ones on free youtube tutorials and udemy classes. Often they seem to legitimately care more than actual professors.
Online instructors I've learned tons from:
Derek Banas
Bucky Roberts
The Net Ninja (don't know the name)
Maximillian Shwarzmüler
Colt Steele
Brad Traversy7 -
The ability to automate my day, create my own apps and modify open source ones to fit with my conditions :)

Our world is dying and we, as the ones that rule the internet at the most basic level, should do something about it5

So no decent internet for me the whole damn weekend and I have no more podcasts left to listen to while working. FUUUUU ...
The internet "technician" that was supposed to connect the house to VDSL really fucked my connection up - I escalated through support and I can't fix it.
(I hate it when I can't fix things myself! Especially electronic ones! Especially simple electronic ones! Damn it!)
Einmal mit Profis arbeiten!*
*[Translation, angry German to angry English:
I'd very much like to work with professionals. One. Fucking. Time.]6 -
I wonder if there are more real developers or fake ones? Maybe even? Too many people stick their nose where they shouldn't be and create too many problems for people who actually work and do something.3
-
"Here’s to the crazy ones. The misfits. The rebels. The troublemakers. The round pegs in the square holes. The ones who see things differently. They’re not fond of rules. And they have no respect for the status quo. You can praise them, disagree with them, quote them, disbelieve them, glorify or vilify them. About the only thing you can’t do is ignore them. Because they change things. They invent. They imagine. They heal. They explore. They create. They inspire. They push the human race forward. Maybe they have to be crazy. How else can you stare at an empty canvas and see a work of art? Or sit in silence and hear a song that’s never been written? Or gaze at a red planet and see a laboratory on wheels? While some see them as the crazy ones, we see genius. Because the people who are crazy enough to think they can change the world, are the ones who do." - Apple Commercial2

wtf...
Ones of the best bugs I love the "most" are the ones where the fix is counter-intuitive, e.g. making smth seemingly incorrect to rectify the issue.
Like today, I crafter an SQL query to fetch some PG metrics. And postgres-exporter refused to accept it until I added an excessive comma [,] at the end of the SELECT block (right before FROM).
Like.. wtf...12 -
C, C++, and Java are legacy programming languages.
So, for the ones who fear that the language will go away in mere 10-15 years. Chill. These languages will stay forever.18 -
What would be a good dev burial?
I'm thinking somehow represent my ashes in binary, commit my testament and have my loved ones do a git push.11 -
(Not a rant)
Mantra for a good life : Stage the good bits, .gitignore the bad ones. Commit and push to Memory !
Peace ☮️2 -
I've been trying to diversify programming languages I know.
It's been rough; I just don't like a lot of the high level programming languages and low level ones are often tough to learn to for someone without formal CS background.
Then I tried Go, and you should too!9 -
Super selfish and targeted question:
Favourite singular VSCode extension?
Not the ones everyone has / are very common, something you have that most might not, be it because it's functionality is not very useful, because it's not very known, etc...3 -
You have the power to kill a technology/language for the eternity, and make one more powerful and evident, which ones would you choose and why?11

anyone want to review my app? preferably ones with android experience, I want to learn how to improve it and make it as good as possible. message @calmyourtities if you'd like to help a newbie with android :)2
-
I recently found an old friend to help my debugging — I don't have a duck, but for some reason people see them as unserious and think the ones I've got are either cute, quirky, or a natural part of the nerd habitat :P4
-
There are two kinds of people in the world: the ones who understand devRant and the ones who don't. =))
-
Sometimes I spend three minutes googling a keyboard shortcut when it would take ~2 seconds to just use the mouse... the trouble is I never remember the shortcut so I look the same ones up over and over again.3
-
@dfox Wouldn't it be better if there were limited amount of push notifications if user haven't seen the previous ones yet? I commented on some popular rant and when I got to a stable connection, the phone vibrated like crazy for at least 15s :D It was awesome btw.1
-
The only relationships that exist in my life, are the ones in my projects' ER diagrams. And they too are infected with foreign keys..!
-
Does anyone here listen to game dev related podcasts? If so, which ones?
From me, I can definitely recommend The Debug Log. They've got a lot of energy, knowledge and experience. Also the way they talk makes me feel a lot more motivated.1 -
Could a freelance dev let me know how they find clients? Not just the ones from sites online and such, but the good clients, 3-4 month projects, proper prices?4
-
Last tuesday I was scheduled for a technical interview with company's mobile team lead. First thing he does is noticing my The Legend of Zelda messenger bag. He starts asking questions about the games I've played, my favorite ones, the ones I disliked and keeps on going for about 10 minutes. Then he starts asking about my experience and some technical stuff for 2-3 minutes. Then he walks away saying "our HR lady will contact you to let you know what's next". Nobody contacted me the rest of the week. I guess someone who prefers "Ocarina of Time" over "A Link to the Past" is not a fit for that company.4
-
There should be a button on a rant that would allow you to get notifications without commenting.
(And probably a notification group for those "marked" rants, as there are many comments from rants you commented on that would bury the ones you actually care about)2 -
Learning from the smart people; in every workplace there are drones and leaders, each have their own selective intelligence. Pick the ones that are the most intelligent to learn from, and you'll be going along happily while learning at breakneck speed from the best.
-
Being the only developer in your circle of non-tech friends is weird 😕.
And why are most female programmers not appealing 🤦♂️.
The beautiful ones are usually clueless and can't get into a ”deep programming concept ”conversation.
I guess I can't eat my cake and have it at a time.18 -
I was told a few times how Musk was a bit of a super villain. And while yes he kind a fits the batman rule of super villain, the ones i‘d trust less are the quieter ones.
Yes Jeff Besos is actually the real super villain. He speaks less, working conditions seem quite draconian and more importantly, you have to be an asshole on yhe business world and he is one of the best.3 -
So this is what a cyber criminal looks like.
"Norwegians are a favourite for cyber criminals"
"And we are easier to fool than Swedes and Danes, if we're to believe the thieves. The only ones more exposed than us are oil rich Saudis" 🤷♂️ -
I love when games don't change their mechanics much between installments. That way, when I play later installments and feel like going back to the previous ones, I don't feel so out of touch due to being used to newer features.1

It seems like everyone else in my team except me and the cto are using dark theme. I see dark theme is the meta since Sauron. Am i one of the last ones to be using light theme?4
-
When the infinite layers of upper management and committees don't trust the ones in the battlefield, are too paranoid and disconnected from reality. They are the ones blocking and preventing the release.
Otherwise, we devs are on schedule, almost no bug left. -
No matter who you are and if i know you, seeing you having nerd stickers on your laptop, especially Linux ones, makes you my buddy.
-
Was digging through an old HDD's OEM Windows recovery partitions and found FON-format fonts that are accurate to several old systems. Several Commodore and Amiga ones (some for 80-char mode too!) and lots of DOS ones. They have names and everything, but I can't use them after installing them... (there were a few blank ones in there too, which is odd...)
-
1) What is the size of your team?

Him: "I'm updating a site and I'm trying to find the REST endpoints you put out to replace the SOAP services"
Me: "Send me a list of endpoints it's using and I'll tell you what the new ones are"
Him: "Here's a list of the endpoints. The ones I've found are in bold"
Me: "Here's the new list."
Him: "Why did you only fill out the ones I'm not using?"
So, FML, he sent me a list of everything in the WSDL and bolded the ones he "found" in his code. And I'm the asshole for getting frustrated that he wasted 30 minutes of my time. -
I've seen far worse people doing what I'm doing, applying terrible practices and still being valued af.
Even if I do smth wrong after doing all the research and alternatives' analysis I know I'll do a proper post-mortem RCA, document it and learn from it, as a result I'll make a better choice to fix the problem and I'll know better next time.
I think I'm alright compared to them. So I don't wory about being an impostor.
Learning by good examples is a good approach. Learning by bad ones might be even better. The "good ones" are yet to fail and be replaced by better (or worse) ones. The "bad ones" are already failing and you can learn WHY you should not be doing it like that and HOW should you do instead to solve the problem.
Learning from good examples only works well if you know the back-story, all the WHYs and HOWs. People usually don't :) -
How does it feel attending conferences? (Good ones!)
Here in my country we don't have that many good ones they are all just some show offs talking about how they hacked their way through. But when I see videos for big conferences with thousands of people it makes me feel a bit jealous and sad that I can't attend those where you'll get real achievers (~_~)
Why did I have to be born here like this FUCK 3rd world countries.2 -

So my school makes a survey each semester where students grade their teachers performance. This is all well and good.
Till I found out today that admin averages all the teachers scores for that class year. So all the good ones are worse and the bad ones are better off.
So I guess someone is desperate for some extra cash by making the school look better than it is... -
The ones I have now! I have a team of great people I'm working with. We get good work done and have alot of laughs. And since we work for a huge fortune 500 company, we have plenty of people in the enterprise to complain to each other about!

devRant suggestion: Comment Bump. Bump up the comments on a rant, the ones with most upvotes get bumped up to the top. Possible pitfalls, where comments have replies which could break the order and make no sense. I guess I just talked myself out of that one. Meh.4

Joined a new workplace. Lead wants me to research on the available list of certain frameworks.
But they have already built a couple of services using certain frameworks and they don't seem to be having any issues with them.
I asked why look for new ones when you already have stuff that work for you and they're like "It's working - is not a reason to not look for new ones".
I mean WTF? Isn't "Don't try to fix things that are not broken" literally the point?4 -

I think the "ultimate success" means success on a personal level:
Take a step back. Realize *this* does not matter. It allows you to build and support your own family. Be with your loved ones. Have pets. See your kids grow up. Grow old together. Looking back on a fulfilling life. Dying surrounded by your loved ones. Knowing, they are safe and cared for. I'm so proud of you what you have created out of nothing! You truly are a developer!
And now go back arguing about tabs vs. spaces on the internet.1 -
Angular and MVC really slows shit down, doesn't it?
I added 1 (one) page which displayed two data grids, straight out of a database procedure. Here's the head count:

The analytics guy just sent me updated tracking specs for a web site.
There are two sheets in the file: "Custom Events LATEST" and "Custom Events updated". This is already confusing enough.
One of them has comments like "I'd like this to be amended", but the event specs described are the same as the ones implemented.
I asked him for clarification, turns out he wants the ones marked in black to be updated, the ones that don't have any label saying they don't need to be updated.
This is also a guy who for at least 2 years has been making columns in spreadsheets wider not by just widening them, or merging multiple cells, but by just letting text overflow into other cells.
I do wonder how some people manage to keep a job. -

Looking at server rentals prices.
Windows ones are, as a rule, about 2x more expensive than linux ones.
Which made me realize the reason why it's usually the more crap tech that wins and spreads:
because usually the more crap tech is free.
We're a bunch of cheapskates willing to impose shit tech on ourselves in the name of saving a few bucks.
In other news, there's no news today.5 -

I've just recently looked a bit deeper into it and it's scary how useless they've become... Especially signature based ones, as 82% of all malware only gets used once before they get changed again and 70% of them are only active for >1h.

During my computer science degree I met the most brilliant, hilarious guys that I now call my best friends and still hang out with to this day.
I've taken a few other degrees and never made friends that were as good as the ones I made in my cosc degree. By far the best years I had in school were the ones spent hanging out with those guys.
The cosc program was the best place to meet good friends because the majority of us are fairly similar. We'd all rather hang out and game with friends and a few drinks then go pub crawling.
Computer science people are my people. -

I want to learn a new front and back end webdev language. So far, I've found Dart and TypeScript (though this one is not completely new to me) on the front end side, and Go, Elixir and Rust on the back end side. Well this is in fact just me reminiscing, instead of telling anecdote.
My first PC was a pentium two, the cpu casing being those horizontal ones, and a big bulky monitor resting on top of it; all white. A white mouse, two white speakers (you know the ones). I was perhaps just about 6 years old, and I used it the first bunch of times to play Mortal Kombat, and Sega's Moto Racer 3, and watch animated disney movies but mostly mickey mouse on VCD. I guess my habits of gaming and binge watching started way too early.1 -

There are two kinds of people in this world. The ones who've listened "Tower 4" podcast and the ones who don't have. It's too cool. But just listened last episode, have to wait a month for new one. Six are available now.
Tower 4 is just a story, but it's very well made. It's about a guy that becomes firewatch living in tower 4 and only has the girl in tower 3 to talk to. Much nice dialogue. There exists a game, much like it.
What are other nice story podcasts?9 -
Anyone knows any high power IoT LoRa boards? I have tried the adafruit and heltech ones, but didn't do much. I need it for a low permittivity environment.7
