The worst thing about being a dev is after a while your reaction to every problem is this: ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Or this: ಠ_ಠ7 -
The most absurd thing that I heard today ,
Me: open this XYZ.com
Friend: Should I open it in chrome or in Google.
Me: (Speechless)
Ironically he is a cs student.
Thx devrant.16 -
just when u have a meeting to rush to, this little shit updates. all my presentation material is on this fuckin thing. FUCK! arghjfbggghhh32
-
So i heard that docker is now a thing and decided to put my servers into containers as well (see image)...but somehow I still don't understand how is this supposed to simplify deployment, vertical scaling and so on...? :D6
-
THERE IS A FUCKING DIFFERENCE BETWEEN "React.component" and "React.Component"! Took me fucking 2 hours to figure this fucking thing out. Until then I was certain that this was some dependency issue. Oh the rage right now!! 🔫🔪💣💣😡18
-
I tagged myself in a comment, and it notified me... 😆
No idea if this is a DevRant thing of a DevRantron thing.. Both..?32 -
Finally done with being on call/standby so thought I'd order myself a pizza calzone 😍
I'm not saying that this thing is small but it's smaller than my hands.
I don't have very big hands 😭9 -
So Scratch is well crazy ass stupid, but for kids this is freaky awesome for a simple game builder that gets them interested.
This thing took like 10 minutes to make 😂
Move the witch with arrow keys and score points for catching the Ghouls.10 -
So I hear Christmas is coming, right? Here's a christmas tree for you!
P.S. this is the real thing. It's a Java project we have to work with... For Christ's sake! The guy who wrote this has recently left the company and handed this code to us as his legacy.
fuck.16 -
"By larger do you mean bigger?"
I was honestly just asked this in an email from a client.
The funniest thing is I didn't even say "larger", I said "bigger".8 -
So apparentally devRant has a youtube channel where they re-create Rants as animations.
This is the best thing ever.5 -
Interesting thing I did yesterday:
This is a program which loops over every word in the wamerican word database and checks if the username is available on the Mojang servers, thus, this is a Minecraft OG username finder, and it works beautifully.
I'm checking 72,000 words, the only thing is I can only check one per second, so the entire process takes about 20 hours. Any usernames which are available are sent into a text file for later viewing, and it remembers which word it looked at last if you can't have your computer on for 20 hours straight.
Very happy! Found quite a few good names so far!14 -
I'd really like a talk with the Spotify UI/UX devs.
No disrespect but DAMN that thing sucks. It shouldn't take me a full fucking minute to find the FUCKING settings!
This is one thing that deezer does well at least imo.20 -
Oh fuck and boy Jesus, how on earth is this still a thing 😦
MD fucking 5 is not a fucking “secure” crypto algorithm.
This site has 14 million breached accounts with fucking MD5 hashes.
I think I’ve had to much internet for today.17 -
Because Moment.js is too mainstream,
Oh man I really need to punch person who wrote this shitty file,
1k LOC , whole thing is a mess, this is just a gist of this crap18 -
Look at this! I finally succeeded in running C code on my shitty TI-83 calculator with a Z80 CPU. This is a huge improvement as I made whole games for that thing with assembly before! 😁😍20
-
It's easy to make jokes about this whole Google assistant thing, but can we just take a second to appreciate what they've done here?
Ethics and morals aside, this tech is incredible, we are truly living in the future. Right here, right now.18 -
I still think the whole kilobyte/kilobit thing is stupid. Who thought it was a good idea to name it this way....8
-
One thing I love about this app is the sorting algorithm. While giving good popular posts exposure, it also shows new unpopular posts in the mix, which you don't see a lot these days.5
-
Why. Why in the name of fucking god is this a thing!?.
Why a fucking huge ass parcel for like, 2 cm³ of content.
Fucking hell just why.
Explain.16 -
I have had this conversation well too often:
- (him/her) Do you mind helping me with this problem I have on my computer ?
- (me) Sure, what is it ?
- (him/her) *proceeds to explaining the problem*
- (me) Ok, I don't know about this particular thing, you should try googling it.
- (the pissed off version of him/her) Never mind, I'll find someone who's willing to help me.
Please stop taking that as me not caring about your problem.
Googling things is basically what I do all day as a developer.
You really should try it. That thing is actually pretty useful.5 -
3 am and still awake.
Me: this is awesome, let's do that thing
Inside Me: I am screwed up, tomorrow I will be a zombie5 -
I think one difficult thing about being a developer is having all your business friends tell you they have this idea that would make millions but you have to build a prototype (for free) for them to pitch. They don't seem to understand that this is a full time job.12
-
Came across this gem a few months ago ago. The only thing I can think of is the recruiter had his favorite pornsearch phrase in his clipboard manager and hit the wrong hotkey.7
-
Last night I had a dream that I met some girl. We immediately clicked but the only thing I remember besides this is that she coded in Vim. 😁😁😁
-
"ThE FIrsT ThiNg a Pr0GraMmer saYs whEn hE iZ b0Rn iZ HELlo w0Rld"
Damn, that is
So
Fucking
Funny
I wonder. Do the people that find this shit amusing are just discovering what programming is? Shit is so fucking cringey man.20 -
This is utter bullshit. Repo shut down because SJW being offended. Python, then Linux, now this.
Next thing we know is GitHub got sued bc they hosted the bot. Then Microsoft. Then the internet is taken down because it serves as a vector to offend ppl.
Really. Fucker need to know when to stop.44 -
Late night coding and my last git message is "changed a shit load of stuff...don't worry I got this"
Good thing this a personal project haha1 -
This community is by far the best thing I've discovered in 2016. Been lurking for a while, thought it was time to post this.
System.out.println("HAPPY NEW YEAR!");3 -
So here goes my home setup. The leftmost screen is the first computer screen I ever had about 13 years ago. The right one came next and I upgraded it this year with a monitor arm to make it vertical. The center one is 27" 1080p (1440p was too expensive).
The wooden thing on the left is a ghetto stand for my laptop. Another salvaged thing is the fan on the middle, it's just pushed to a cut usb cable, not even soldered, but it works.
Peripherals are pretty standard: Cheap mechanical keyboard, Logitech g502 and a drawing tablet. My headphones are the shp9500 (best thing I ever bought).
Little by little it came to this and Im pretty happy about it.
PS: Say hi yo my dog.10 -
Yes, this is actually a real thing.
I wonder in what you learn in the prerequisite "Keyboard and Mouse skills" class if this one teaches you how to type and delete text...8 -
We study a lot to learn how to write code and the most satisfying thing in this profession is to delete code.3
-
Making a Package Manager from Scratch is hard.
Making a Scratch-like education coding software in XAML is hard.
Setting up a server with zero knowledge is hard.
Creating a new file extension for my project and making it work is hard.
But, as a student,
studying and coding is the hardest thing.
Same 24 hours for everyone, and I should code as well as study.
Time.
The most precious thing in Earth.

Currently trying to convert a python application to PHP because the learning curve of python is a little too high right now for me.
It's especially a challenge to find PHP functions/libraries which can do the same as some python ones.
I've never written a single thing in python, this is a very weird experience!17 -
Why would someone do this to his/her laptop????
There is a point after which this "stickers on a laptop" thing starts looking like shit, and in this case the point is long gone. Also at this point most of the stickers start to lose meaning.13 -
Is it too much to ask for the dumb ass devs behind Eclipse to fucking let a FRESH install - no plugins yet, open without crashing?
is that even a thing?
Fuck you Eclipse, and companies that make me use this useless pile of shit!7 -
ARGGHHHH Python!!! why the hell is this a thing... if I specify a default argument, I want it to be a default argument, not get carried over....13
-
Client:
This has to be done with in 160 hours.
Me:
Seems doable
After maybe 100 hours of developing:
Client:
This is great and all but we decided to change the specs little (a lot) surely you can code this whole thing again in the rest of the time.10 -
Windows: Would you like me to give all your data to MS or somewhat less data?
Me: Well .. I guess .. I'll choose the Basic option..
Windows: Here is a fun fact .. I'll send all the data regardless of your choice :)
This is what's happening in the background, I think. I mean there isn't even a phuqing option to turn this thing off.19 -
Have been working with javascript for 2 years and I just had a look at node.js docs.
This thing is orgasmic for a guy like me. So much power!8 -
Huawei will shut down Bootloader unlocker Site = Dead Brand for me!
Sorry but this is censoring. Sure Stock Android matured over the years, but ROOT IS STILL A THING!
I've I buy a device, I also wanna have full rule over it.1 -
my boss asked me to join a xamarin project, there are 45 bugs on current sprint. the first thing i saw is this code, no wonder there are so many bugs 😭5
-
Oh, this PHP thing is becoming big, we must use this; *makes ASP*
Oh, oh, this Java thing is really popular, and we're not the big bois now! *releases C#*
Waaait, functional is cool now? Damnit. Dude, grab this~~~ *F#*
Uhh. So people actually like JavaScript now? A wild *~~TypeScript~~* has appeared
Why does Microsoft have a history of following trends, and releasing poor clones with no substantial improvements??9 -
Websites that redirect you to a custom /404 page after you've typed their way too fucking long URL and misspelled a single word deserve to be nuked from orbit.
Holy fucking shit, why is this a thing? Has this ever helped ANYBODY?9 -
I have been learning how to dockerize entire projects this week, and I have to say, Docker is the best thing I've come across in a long time.
That is all5 -
WTF is an agilist? Am I a codist now? This crap is getting out of hand. I’m really starting to dislike this industry- it’s the same thing we’ve been doing for years people, you’re just putting fancy names and certifications on top of it now.13
-
WanBLowS Vusta is more stable than this piece of shit that you call code. Yet you call yourself a programmer? Goddammit, even the shit that I dump in the toilet looks better. Because at least that thing is honest about being shit, unlike this craptacular mess that you call an application. Maybe consider kill -9 $(pidof life).3
-
Code it in binary
(My friend claims to code in binary, is this an actually applicable thing or just a novelty thing to impress people?)17 -
HOLY.
CHRIST.
MAVEN.
Where has this thing been all my life. I can manage my Java web projects from a single repository that works native with Linux. No more hunting for .jar files on the web, EVERYTHING IS MANAGED FROM A SINGLE .XML FILE. MAVEN WORKS WITH ANY JAVA IDE.
This is one of the single greatest systems I have ever found.10 -
Desks seem to be a thing, currently. This is my desk. There are many like it, but this is mine.
The setup is a little dated, but I love it, and when remote working, I've to use the company laptop anyway.
Specs:
Intel Xeon 4x3.3GHz
16gb DDR3
geforce gtx 680
SAMSUNG evo SSD+some HDDs
3 dell ips displays with display port
And my beloved g15 & g70012 -
I asked my 2 younger kids: What is the dumbest thing a teacher has said this year?
11 year old: "My teacher said our class is like a big family."
How is she at 11 so wise?10 -
I started interning at a non IT Company, first thing I did was fix the printer 😂
I guess this is our destiny2 -
A co-worker on a gigantic PR i made:
"the worst thing about this pr is that while i was reviewing it, I forgot about my coffee and it turned cold. Otherwise good job!"1 -
I Googled "png to svg converter", this is the output of the first online tool I tried.
This dev literally just a base64 encoded copy of my origin image wrapped in an svg... the most infuriating thing about it is that technically it did 'convert' it to svg - just not in the way I had anticipated.
Whoever wrote this is a lazy genius (and a dickhead).8 -
Stupid piece of legacy shit needing to silent print without the dialogs in IE on windows 10.
this is proving to be a thing of nightmares.
this has worked for years but no windows need to block this “for security”
windows and security - i would laugh but this is going to keep me awake at night.1 -
what's the thing that reminds you, that you are a developer?
I said "the time complexity of finding my car in this parking lot is n factorial".11 -
What the real fuck?! My phone's storage is decreasing automatically. I am not doing a fucking thing! And it's still going on. Only 145 MB of free storage is left. My phone is hanging a lot and apps are crashing. I can't do a fucking thing on my phone!
I checked storage in settings. Everything looks fine. But the Misc. This fucking thing is holding 9.85 GB, and when I open it, it shows only 1.9 GB. WHAT THE ACTUAL FUCK?!
AAAAAAAAAA!!
Anybody?33 -
WINDOWS UPDATE JUST FUCKED MY LINUX PARTITION!!! Apparently, this is a common thing? I lost a whole bunch of stuff that I really wanted to keep :/7
-
Ever have to put your work on hold due to being called into a 2 hour meeting to discuss how important it is that we need this thing finished asap.1
-
There is this around 50 yo guy who seriously said in a room full of linuxers "oh, I'm already over with that Linux thing, it's for children. I'm using Windows now."
The sad thing is: he meant it seriously.3 -
** PSA to all programming language and tool maintainers **
Please for the love of god have a dedicated examples section on your website where people can quickly evaluate what the thing even looks like
So often the next best thing is going to the docs where they tell you that the turboblub option should be set to 12 in these specific usecases whEN I DON'T eVEN KNoW WHETHER THIS IS A PROGRAMMING LANGUAGE OR A LAWN MOWER3 -
I have not researched it so I'm not sure if this is a widely known thing but I figured out a sort of hacky way to get a max integer value:
-Declare an unsigned int.
-Subtract 1
-Divide 2
That is your max signed int value
int main(){
unsigned int a = 0;
a--;
std::cout << a / 2 << std::endl;
}7 -
Me: hey mr backend guy, front end guy here, having some trouble with $thing, here's a detailed explanation of my issue, could you let me know if $thing is still active?

SSSSSSOOOOO guess I'm figuring this one out myself -

Working on a C project right now, this is the only thing that comes to mind...
Good old printbugger.1 -
What was the most stupid thing interview ever do to you?
My side of story. He (interviewer, also a developer) try to convince me that JavaScript and Java are the same thing. Which we all know that is not...
He said "I can't hire someone who don't know basic of computer science , this is basic that JavaScript is from Java"
(Isn't ecmascript or something?)
Saying JavaScript is From Java is a wrong statement. There are differences between having a DICK and Being a DICK.5 -
I tried a tool for analysing mobile applications, since then I keep receiving emails from them.. and this is what I received this morning. the thing is getting serious 🤨3
-
This is a joke. This isn't even wifi in my room 4 rooms across from the router. This is LAN. 1und1 at their finest. (No bad weather, no sister uploading photos or brother downloading.. you know)
The thing is, we are switching to QuiX. And the ****ers from 1&1 want to keep us as their customers for another 13,5 months! Is this even legal?! WTF5 -
I know this is a fictional creative interpretation generated by an AI model, but it might just be the truest thing I've ever read 🤣🤣🤣2
-
"OMG WE MISSED SOMETHING WE NEED AN EMAIL SENT TO EVERYONE IF X HAPPENS AND NOBODY DID A THING WITHIN AN HOUR!"
Ok done.
"OMG WE NEED IT SENT IF NOBODY DID A THING EVERY 30 MINUTES"
Um... not sure we're solving this problem right way ... but there you go done.
"OMG SOMEONE GOT AN EMAIL AFTER 45 MINUTES AND NOT 30 MINUTES"
Bro who the fuck knows why that happened, it's email not instant messenger .... that's what I meant by us solving this in the wrong way, email for this is dumb... how about we solve this process problem in some other way or you just fuck off ... this isn't a coding issue this is something else...4 -
Got a vertical mouse a while ago, and I like it.
Saw this on Youtube, thinking of going full vertical now...
But rear mirrors on my keyboard??
I don't know dude...10 -
It's Rainy...
Smoking a Joint
Infected Mushroom on Youtube
Arduino in my front, just recovered a damaged module, drawers filled with new gadgets to try (new to Arduino, is so addicting I don't even play anymore)...

!Rant
I got a co-founder for a thing I'm building.
Building this thing will only get better as all the struggles of building a startup thing get wurse.
Today, my rant friends, is a great day. -
When will X be finished?!
Um..I don't know cuz thing Y is blocking me from doing X implementation and it makes no sense.. I have no idea what is wrong with it and can't tell how long it'll take me to fix, hopefully by the end of today I'll have thing Y fixed enough so I can finish thing X..
Ok, will you be able to update production today?! Just put it on production when you're done with X.
Uuuumm... Yeah... // still need to know how X will behave in cases a, b, c & b+c...
I'm writing this while waiting for abc feedback.. this is going great.. :/
I know prod is not used as prod yet, but still... fuuuuu!!1 -
What is this "recruiters called me after yhey found my LinkedIn" thing? Are you telling me there is a world where I don't have to go from door to door to find a job?9
-
I cant believe im crying while coding because i cant fix a bug. Is this a mild reaction of a burnout. Instead of giving up I'm literally crying and i cant control it. Good thing im alone in the room so nobody can see me9
-
I'm afraid that this community become a place for everyone and the good thing is there is no ads.
chapeau for you devrant team5 -
I wish I could share this code with y'all, holy moly, it's bad.
It stinks so much, it hurts.
And now I have to write more bad, stinky code to add a feature that will be used until this thing will get shut down by end of next quarter. Because trying to write good code in this thing is impossible.7 -
Found this in a third party library once. Only thing I can think is that this programmer was paid by the line. Because, seriously, this could have been one line.
-
Is it so much to ask for ability to do my job remotely. I work on a fucking computer, I can do this shit at home. I don't need to drive 50 miles there and back to do my job.
Flexibility is a thing.5 -
I don't know if this brand is popular outside my country, so I thought you guys should know this is a thing10
-
!dev && !rant
@dfox and @trogus my so was like, wait... Is this like a thing to complain? That's awesome!
Wait let me guess it's for developers only, right? Why can't we normal people have this? :O7 -
this is my legacy code, it's stupid, Change my mind.
a large number of lecturer and friends are against my thought. personally, i think this kind of code is told to be an OOP yet this is against the OOP concept. why ? first you assign the field to be private, but you implement Getter and Setter method later on, this is the same if you assign the field to be public in the first place.
another minor thing; yes this is old me, i use Bahasa Indonesia as a variable name.31 -
HR: good news! We're going to be moving your whole floor to a **newly renovated floor** in our main building.
Me (thinking): sounds good! It'll be all new and I'll be reintegrated with the main population, see young ppl (girls) finally.
HR: there will be no assigned seating though. Do you think you will have any problems finding a seat since your deaf?
Me: Hm.... should be fine... (Thinking: so no nobody will care if I work from home or not...yes!)
HR: Actually they said they can give you a fixed seat!
Me: wow thanks!
(Wait... Fuck... Did they actually review my low physical attendance rate so now if I become the only guy with a fixed seat on the floor, I will have to show up more instead of working remotely whenever I want (the rest of my team are in different countries)... I will literally be the center of attention...)4 -
Lol. I installed Fedora two weeks ago and I just can't rant about it. I don't know if this is a good thing 🤔1
-
Not sure if I'm going crazy or my spacebar is full of static 🤔 is that even a thing?
Anytime I move my hand pass the spacebar I get this tingly feeling.....
In 30 years... this is a new!5 -
Reading a book:
"You’ll be able to go to bed at night and not have to worry about a 2 a.m. call from DevOps that some thing has gone awry and you need to fix it immediately."
This is a fantastic book!4 -
I am learning angular. As a beginner, I feel there is too much fiddling with this thing :-( ...anyway, I guess when you are used to it and understand why everything is the way it is it becomes normal and understandable.9
-
Found this using elementary os
So while browsing the market i found this "thing"
Am am the only one who things that this is a huge BS?11 -
!rant is a logic operator, right? As in NOT rant. So why do I so often see them on actual rants?
And for that matter, who cares? If there's a [Read More] tag, you'll click if you want, regardless.
Why is this a thing?8 -
Don't understand what the hype about Elementary OS was. Used for ca. half a year, do not see any benefit.
If this is supposed to provide "usability" on a Linux kernel, then I am sorry, but in this regard it is a tremendous failure.
All tasks take long, there are all sorts of bugs, today I needed a multi-monitor setup for a presentation "real quick", dear lord was that a shitshow.
Nah, this thing is not for me.14 -
This weather makes me wanna jump off a roof.
Fucking hell it's so depressing when you wake up and the first thing you see outside is just, grey, dark.
And then it fucking starts hailing.11 -
A client asked for a tool for his website. So I built it for him and he was satisfied with the thing, cause it did what it should. Nevertheless I was not, because it kind of had a messy backend. I made it working and charged my time. Now I am wondering if I should rebuild the thing to satisfy my code quality for free, or just keep that thing as ugly as it is....
What your opinion on this?6 -
New dev has been ghosting our team. Doesn’t attend meetings and is always “out”. My boss is about to handle it, but it’s been a drain on productivity to have this going on. Is this a common thing any of you are seeing in development professions? I can’t imagine doing that to an employer.5
-
My battery died after a long day. So, I decided to use devRant web for the first time and to be honest with all due respect this website sucks. Most difficult thing about it is navigation.3
-
Speed programming contest
Is this a thing... it should be.
After years of practice
I can type and code very fast with in shortcut only style
It actually impressed a
Non techy girl3 -
Here in singapore, we developers are super under-appreciated, pm always get the credit. and our salary are never decent. is this a global thing or just us? please share18
-
just got a talk accepted to a big tech conference this summer, unsure if this is a good thing or a bad thing4
-
Kubernetes is actually sick. I love learning about it and playing around with localized clusters. The only thing that sucks is I would never use this for anything while I'm still a CS student. And I probably won't ever use this if I'm not in Devops. *sigh*. fun to learn about, regardless.
-
Fucking panic!
First thing I see when I wake up today is an email from my colleague. It says we've lost a hell of a lot of user uploaded files in ALPHABETICAL ORDER. Also, it happened TUESDAY NIGHT.
This will be fun...2 -
Today it is the day of:
"Ok just a few more changes and this thing is good to go. Let me just look at this for a bit to make sure the changes work and...."
And now I'm looking at some APIs spitting out garbage and somehow everything is working and I'm questioning if I know anything at all now :O1 -
Waiting for my interview at a big firm.
Nervous.
If I am accepted here, I will have to break a 1 year contract with my previous company. I just feel it is not the right thing to do but this is a very good oppurtunity for me.2 -
If your phone had taken photos of your face for your whole life without you knowing, would you watch a video that was automatically generated from the photos?12
-
Today, i discovered thus beauty within our legacy code:
// TODO: this is probably the most dirty thing in our product. It needs a model more than anything else
This captions a crappy part of controller code for several years :/ -
when you start a project with "im gonna do this MVC thing correctly this time" then after a few days, weeks you realise everything is a controller
am i the only one?3 -
When you accidentally forget the wk98 tag as well as the time it happened...
Thank you guys for caring about the anime I lost. Love this community2 -
Why recruiters want me to fill up the Application form and I dont get any reply from them since. Is this a data collection thing?3
-
Updating angular and npm/node/whatever the fuck is the most difficult and convoluted thing ever
Web devs, you deserve better than this awful piece of shit cable mess of a fucking "framework" or whatever the fuck this retarded shit is meant to be2 -
You so are fucking stupid!!! You don't fit in this team because of your stupidity! For one get a fucking grip on life will ya and stop with the money thing the only thing you say is money this money that.
Second fucking learn the view the world with logic in mind, if some things don't work on websites that you designed than your knowledge of websites and the web in general is to low to begin with!!1 -
"Oh this is such a minor thing - I'll just fix it directly in production". The actual coding mistake was the kind that you make lot's of every day, but the unwarranted confidence was a bigger one :)
-
i started a project a couple months ago and i used ORM for the queries, cause it's already implemented. thing is, this project came directly from hell and the math is stupid af. it requires subqueries in subqueries and the data that was provided is trash. I'm giving up on the ORM, it's not scalable.
-
Someone made a summarized version of the rust book. Still worth picking up the real thing, but this is handy.
https://github.com/psibi/...2 -
Why the hell does windows not feature a generell purpose interpreted language? This is horrible! Seriously, out of the box this thing doesnt support anything!13
-
Sometimes code is correct but so wrong. Came across this in a kotlin PR today
If (thing != null && thing!!.field != null) {2 -
This is all the DHCP settings I get on this shitty router I got from my ISP. The other settings are more the less the same, which is trash. Don't even get me started on the interface.
The thing doesn't even support *WRT firmwares because it has a Realtek CPU.
Thanks. Guess I'll have to buy a new router now...7 -
WHY THE FUCK THE NEED TO USE Visual Studio.
Well, in my university, for some fuckin dumb reason we are taught to develop a simple fuckin web form in asp.net.
Thing is, VS is so fuckin powerful that it's a huge overkill for such a simple thing. What is even worse is that, WE DONT FUCKIN EVEN CODE IN C# we just drag FUCKIN COMPONENTS HERE AND THERE without learning a single thing
But okay let's move on. I'm a linux guy, which mean, I CANT FUCKIN USE VS AND CANT EVEN PRACTICE THOSE DUMB SHITS and that means i won't fuckin remember a single thing.
FUCK THIS SHIT2 -
Why in the fuck is it so hard to see buttons when kb selecting with tab in a browser? It's like:
"Tab....Tab.....Tab Tab Tab... oops, went too far,

Today has officially drained all the brain I didn't even have yesterday. Let's hope I get somewhere with this thing, or else all the brain I've wasted is going to be useless.
Also, fuck opencv's fisheye undistortion. Mofo, I don't have the camera params, how the fuck do you want me to give you your stupid kernel shit? Shut the fuck up from my face. Stupid hoebag.

Guess fullstack is now the trending thing. Read a book on javascript and code examples in the book, do same thing with python or any other backend.
As soon as you are done, add fullstack to your bio.
So many newbies following this path. Coding up alot of examples with no real depth in any particular language.6 -
i cant touch computer for two days, and it make me a strange feel. maybe its a good thing . through travel to relax myself.have a funny day and then start a new coding life😁.this holiday is a long time, after this travel .also have enough time to Learning some good framework.3

"The ability to change on a dime is one thing small teams have by default that big teams can never have. This is where the big guys envy the little guys. What might take a big team in a huge organization weeks to change may only take a day in a small, lean organization. That advantage is priceless." - Andrew Hunt

It's been almost 4 months since i got my first software engineer job.... They only have me doing test support. Should i be concerned? Or is this a regular thing?4

For all things, for all men, that a man compliments a thing does not imply that this man at least attempts to understand this thing. However, for all men, that a man criticises a thing implies that this man at least attempts to understand this thing.
For all computer programs, that a computer program is terrible implies that scrapping the current implementation of this computer program and beginning anew may be the best method of fixing this computer program.
With few exceptions, for all programming languages $l$, given sufficient effort, $l$ source code can be human-readable.
The UNIX philosophy never became outdated.
For all computer programs $p$, $p$ should be written sufficiently well that the author of $p$ can be prideful of $p$.
For all computer programs $p$, a specification for $p$ should be written before $p$ is created.
For all good computer programs, a good computer program can run on terrible hardware.

remote team bonding/social activities like playing pictionary or whatever
can we not? maybe its cute the first time, but we're all awkward and i just wanna go home
i dont even understand where this is coming from, if u actually want to make people happy u could just send them home earlier
otherwise why have this stuff instead of just making us wageslaves work like normal anyway
is this another thing like how the hiring budget is bigger than the retention budget or is there different MBA research for why the fuck this is a thing to begin with2 -

"All of us who do creative work, we get into it because we have good taste. But there is this gap. For the first couple years you make stuff, it’s just not that good. It’s trying to be good, it has potential, but it’s not. But your taste, the thing that got you into the game, is still killer. And your taste is why your work disappoints you. A lot of people never get past this phase, they quit. Most people I know who do interesting, creative work went through years of this. We know our work doesn’t have this special thing that we want it to have. We all go through this. And if you are just starting out or you are still in this phase, you gotta know it’s normal and the most important thing you can do is do a lot of work … It is only by going through a volume of work that you will close that gap, and your work will be as good as your ambitions … It’s gonna take awhile … You’ve just gotta fight your way through." - Ira Glass

How the fuck do Jr devs end up doing things someone specifically asks not to do.!!!!!
Fucks timelines up
So I asked my Jr Dev to leave a feature as it might not be required in this release and rather concentrate on the thing that is gonna make this release work , the “SAVE” button.
I mean how had is it to understand,
This dude goes ahead and “utilises” days on the thing that isn’t gonna be released(a dropdown) , and no, the dropdown still doesn’t work.
I understand the spirit of solving the bugs first. But what’s the point of solving it if it doesn’t fucking “save”
P.S. I’ve done this too as a Jr Dev :p7 -
This Collab thing is so interesting. I have come back to devRant after a long time and its so very nice to see some insane ideas floating around here. This app is not only about Rants now it is a world of its own. Great work David !!4

Is it ok to hate your old code?
I always say to myself "WTF is this? There's a better way of doing this" when I have to make some changes to some older project.
But, I see it as a good thing, it means that I've improved a bit since then.3 -
As a developer there is one thing that I hate above all things in this industry and thats doing terms & conditions pages -.- smh.3

So, the other day, I was working in Unity, and trying to find the complement of a byte number. That is, 255 - myByte. So, I write this :
Byte newByte = 255 - myByte;
And it says that it can't convert from a byte to an int. Okay... So, I do this:
Byte newByte = byte.MaxValue - myByte;
And still, it errors the same thing. So, a quick google search proves that no matter what, the subtraction operator returns an int. WHAT IS WRONG WITH C#? That is the dumbest thing ever!4 -
Manager getting snippy with me coz one of the 2 urgent things I'm currently working on hasn't been deployed. It is with great sorrow I am announcing that an Apple Watch can catch fire while on your wrist. I bashed Fitbit very hard for this when they were giving people burn scars for life. Collecting and selling data is one thing, but mutilating bodies because of negligence and wanting to save a buck on manufacturing is a whole another thing. It seems like Apple is not much different.
I am struggling with body dysmorphia, and I told you out loud that if a Fitbit device gave me a burn scar for life, I would've probably committed suicide. I still stand by these words. My body integrity is a big deal to me. Having a scar due to my own negligence, like mishandling a knife, is one thing, but the concept itself that some fucking hustle culture startup can mutilate my body is another thing. It scares me.
I am considering to abandon any kind of wearable electronics altogether. The cost of failure is just too high. I'm probably going to get a mechanical Timex or a Seiko.19 -

That's gonna be a quick rant about Golang.
Anyone else here frustrated by the fact that you can inline assignment in the if statement, but can't inline the if-else itself?
You can do:
if thing := hey.getThatThing(); thing == theThing {
return 'this'
} else {
return 'that'
}
But can't do:
return 'this' if hey.getTheThing() == theThing else 'that'

I saw a thing was already define on the front-end and just went ahead and assigned it to the necessary orgs
Few hours later our process for that thing failed on 3/4 instances. The last I already setup a couple weeks ago for testing. Turns out there's 2 things with really similar names on those instances so when I decided to not fucking check, the wanted thing was never defined so it couldn't process
Welp I'm messaging my boss tomorrow morning to see how bad this is, then unassigning the existing thing before defining the correct one
Fucking hell why did I not verify the definition. Would've taken less than 30 fucking seconds for all instances. Thankfully this is still technically in testing. But fuck I'm pissed at myself2 -

being 4th in line to maintain legacy code in a language I have never used before when the the last two guys were, and this is my boss telling me and not my judgment, 'incompetent.'
there are literally four functions in this class that all do the same thing... which is the one being called in this case... a seperate external function located in another file in a different language on a different server all together. 😐 -

The stages of new thing:
1. I don't see what this thing is supposed to do.
2. Ok, I see what it's supposed to do but I don't understand it.
3. I sort of understand it but learning it is too much work for very little benefit.
4. I am bored so I will learn new thing so I look busy.
5. I will rewrite my current project with new thing.
6. My current project is now bigger, slower and harder to understand.
7. I am now enthusiastic advocate of new thing and I feel more of a pro.
8. Need to code something in a hurry and revert to writing code like I copied it from w3schools.
9. Discover new thing is actually obsolete.
10. Remind myself that none of it is remotely relevant to my actual job and resume hunting for CSS bug.3 -

In javascript, is there a difference between separate function calls that mimic a "chain pattern" or state changes using if/else if/else and using the chain or state pattern directly? The internet gave me no real/helpful response to that.
Suppose that:
if(isThingA(thing)) {
makeThingB();
else if(isThingB(thing)){
makeThingC();
else {
makeThingA();
}
That code is always executed e.g. after a user mouse click. "thing" gets defined in some other code.
It can be seen as a state machine that goes back to its starting point.
Is a pattern with objects/classes/prototypes even needed/preferred instead?
It's partly a problem I'm facing in my code but it's also interesting to know ideas/thoughts on this.3 -
I never had a fight. And I mean never at all, not just dev-related.
I'm not sure that this is a good thing.
Sometimes I wonder, does this mean that I'm a good diplomat, or that I'm not relevant enough to argue with?1 -
I got a request on LinkedIn to endorse a past hard-working colleague of mine, but honestly, the only thing I remember about them is that they used to hang a hand-written sign over their cubicle that simply said:

I was checking my work Inbox and the first thing that I saw was a recruiter email.
So, let's check, is this my personal email, no.
Hmmm, maybe this is a prank or a test? check email domains and everything looks legit.
It seems that recruiters want to get developer attention at all cost nowadays. :D -
I'm working with this stupid ass framework that has a bunch of old style React class nonsense as examples (that's not actually that bad, but) ... AND worst of all every code example revolves around this convoluted thing where:
"How you do a thing."
"Make button, then you make a function that calls X, Y, Z and it opens the thing!"
But that's not the way you'd EVER do it because doing the thing inside the framework's components is COMPLETELY DIFFERENT!
I get wanting to dumb down documentation but this is dumbed down to pointlessness! -
Had to code review a line of java with this code a while back: ServiceService.isProductProduct. Funny thing is that even though it's obviously stupid, it was in accordance with the coding standard and I couldn't really object to it (._.)

My number one problem whenever I need to write original unique code is this question: "What's the next line supposed to say?"
I just really have a hard time knowing what the next thing is I'm supposed to write, even when I know pretty well what the thing is supposed to do.
Anyone else? -
Well the most irritating css thing is a simple BLANK SPACE that we injected somehow and how it destroys the whole freaking css style of that damn page. So you go crazy finding why that damn thing is not aligning and breaking other stuff.
Makes you wanna cry.
P.S. When something like this happens, display: table to the rescue.2 -
We need a running theme for topics that treat "the code" as if it is a living thing. Like we never stop to think about what The Code thinks about all this.1

Guys, sorry to ask this question, is there any app that could download a video while watching it? similar case to internet download manager, they add an extension for you in the browser once it detects that there is a video it will show you a small bar to download it, the thing is, this works perfectly on windows however i moved to Linux and IDM is not supported under linux OS unfortunately5

Linux needs a KBI. That driver recompilation thing when upgrading a minor kernel version is so annoying. Solaris, HP-UX, AIX, BSDs had already solved this in the early 2000s.2

Got up with a pretty bad hangover. The worst thing that could happen was GitHub getting acquired by Microsoft. Is this for real?2

the thing I love the most about the open source community is this: need a feature? open an issue and 8 times out of 10 it's implemented on the next version.1 -
is it a normal thing to have 117 table element on a html page? i'm to young? i heard it's was normal few years ago. or ppl coding this site are just shit?
i will probably go for this one2 -
So, we run a React website and a node backend on an EC2 instance. The damn thing keeps crashing randomly every other day. I’ve given up at this point.
P.S. any tips on how to prevent this is much appreciated4 -
SO TIRED of the typescript generics system. I get why you can't assign Thing<Foo> to Thing<any>, I do. But also, WHAT THE FUCK!? This is such a giant waste of time having to fix everything to pass around generics that I don't care about.
I've probably spent ~500 hours of my life wrestling this stupid ass type system.11 -
My team works as a growth team. So, I have to start with different documentations from different teams each time I start a project.
The thing is documentation is badly written and you have to dig a lot to find a small thing.
At the same time, culture of the company urges us to go deep before contacting another team.
Each team's documentation is different and some people force on reading the documentation before contacting them. Growing technically has become a lot more challenging me and honestly I don't want to do this anymore. -
So I'm working on this little personal project (also as a way to keep my "skills" sharpened for the coming semester), that first started as a workaround to do this other thing, and I wanted to develop it and make it a full fledged thing, with a GUI (or something that resembles it, I don't know how to make GUIs yet, and IDK why is it a 3rd grade thing) and all instead of existing just in the IDE's terminal. When it was on the workaround stage it was just this ugly monster, with only 2 things one could do, but it worked. Now I'm going for a more polished thing and it's starting to break on me, and in places I didn't expect it to LoL
It's like I'm on a boat and I'm getting leaks from everywhere. Arr gotta get me a bucket and save me boat from sinking -
I know that Ubuntu used to spy on it's users prior to 16.04. Is this still a thing? Does it still spy and feed the data to Amazon?

Does anyone know if there actually is a way to make URL alias? Like:
I wanna go to https://maps.google.com
But instead I only wanna type : maps.google
Just like that new thing of Google "sheets.new"
Or are there any Google Developers that may see this and are gonna implement this 😉
And I know: But why don't just type .com behind it? Well.. If there is one thing that I've learned as developer it's that every second you spend to long on one thing.. You actually waste because at the end you could've wrote a whole project! Or fixed a bug or something like that. You know what I mean17 -
So I have played around with this thing called LudoTune which is a website that allows you to make music by drag-n-drop music blocks together. It's pretty cool.

Hey folks,
Is anyone using a Dell XPS 13 (9370)? This is the 2018/2019 model.
Is anyone of you also facing the thing that is gets extreme hot, when charging? And I really mean only when charging. Not hitting it with a Max load.
Mine gets as hot as it can possibly be and it starts thermal throttling.
On battery, everything is fine and the laptop is cool as ice.
Both situations are under normal load. Nothing heavy ... CPU mostly idle - rarely over 25% utilisation / thread.
I run Linux on it. Not Shure if it is a compatibly thing, this is why I am interested if others are having this issue.8 -

What do you think guys about this "internet computing" - run a webpage with all is data on blockchain thing? I have mixed feelings, it's like the app you made is nowhere and everywhere at the same time. Can be the future?1

Is ColdFusion still a thing? I just got a contracting job at this startup. I know nothing about ColdFusion. Spent yesterday and today just figuring how to dynamically create a folder inside this <cfscript></cfscript> tag. I am yet to figure it out. -_-

i said "damn this thing is huge" when gazing at a 3k LOC file and not a single person at work clapped back with "thats what she said"
am I just old fashioned?5 -
Eh...
Any guy with ETL tool background?
Is it worth learning Talend?
Our workplace decided to use this for data integration but I'm not sure this thing is currently used or not.
I've also researched a bit about other alternatives but as I've no background in this area I'm unable to decide. -

This is not really a developer thing but has anyone bought the Anet A8 3D printer from GearBest? And if so what is your opinion and can you recommend it? It is currently priced at about 170$ (160€) and for that price it looks quite good. -
