Imagine yourself exploring Medium, looking for some new awesome tools to try out.
You accidentally find the new, promising programming language. It called Blow. It promises itself to be “idiomatic”, “minimalistic”, “simple” and “handsome”. And it also compiles to Electron. You decide to give it a try.
It has its own package manager, simple and idiomatic – every package is “blow add” away. But it’s only three packages available: the “blowsay”, just like “cowsay”, the “this”, printing The Blow Manifesto and “blue”, which is simplistic, simple and minimalistic idiomatic handsome functional frontend framework built with simplicity in mind.
You want to build a todo app, so you type “blow add blue” and press enter.
Following Medium articles written by some guy wearing Ray-Bans, you managed to finally put a todo app together, after seven hours of straight up coding and fighting that simple and idiomatic syntax, trying to make it do what you need. Alright, it’s time to build it.
It has built-in task runner named “job”.
So you type “blow job todo”.
You spending three hours more doing “blow job this”, “blow job that”, trying to blow job everything you see. You’re tired and mad at those damn blow job hipsters created that. You literally suck at programming in that.
Everything falls apart. Things doesn’t work. And after another “ENOENT 0() 0x628 NOT_SUPPORTED”, you give up, admitting that you’ve really sucked at this.6 -
Programming is not knowing some language very well. It's about how you solve complex problems with the right tools for the job.5

Public service announcement: Do not get married to your language, tools, or way of doing things. If there's an easier solution to something, try it before dismissing it. No language is perfect, and dumping everything on the responsibility of an API or framework can cause more headache then solve it.
Case in point: I love Java for backend programming, but node.js is a better solution to frontend programming then depending on JSP's and HTML within the same Java project. Less things go wrong and it's easier to debug issues.
There is no best programming language. Only best practices and using the right tool for the right job.

3 weeks ago, at 33, I jumped ship from a dead end career as a technician and landed my first programming job at a startup. The pay is lower for now and I'm constantly feeling burnt out from learning so much so fast, but I haven't been this happy in years. Seeing light at the end of the tunnel can do wonders for your mental health.3

I found an interesting job post on SO, I decide to apply. It comes with a programming test. A simple unit test that must pass (see current-1 post). I get it passing, go to send off my resume and code and the fucking email they supplied isn't valid or active. Fuck you. Eat dicks. Useless fucking HR.

Don't get me wrong, I like funcional programming, but this smug „This would neeever happen with FP“ bullshit really gets on my nerve and kind of turns me off the idea of ever wanting to work with FP programmers.
It's just another paradigm, it's still possible to write unmaintainable fuckugly crapcode with functional programming.
And it is still very possible to write beautiful, clean, well maintainable code with OOP. Get over yourselves and understand that it's a tool and not a religion, and a good dev should know when to pick which tool for which job without childish notions of intellectual superiority.4 -
worst interview was about 2 years ago. I found this job as on a famous website, I applied for a desktop dev. position...the job seemed really easy, after 10 minutes the so-called CTO asked me:" how much do you know C hash?" me:"what?" him:"C hash...the Microsoft programming language" I thanked him for his time and went home crying ( he meant c# )...after a month I found out the company had gone bankrupt...I think I know why..8

I'm really close to handing my resignation letter, even if I don't have any other job offers right now.
That might be a good thing tho, as it would be good for me to take some time off and recover from all the toxicity of my current job. Working at this company is starting to take a toll on me, making me more asocial than I usually am. I'm even losing my passion for programming.
So yeah, I think I'll take some time to heal and find inspiration again before deciding what to do next.5 -

Tl;dr porn is ruining my life.
Today I had a meeting with the project leader and the CTO. They had bad news, which did not come as a surprise.
In short, they said I did not pass the expectations they had, and unfortunately need to find somewhere else to work.
This is my third time being told to find somewhere else to work, and I really can't describe how it feels. I was even told that I maybe I should reconsider my future as a developer, and kids can do programming better than I can do.
It's really difficult when all you've done in the last year is to learn and improve your current skills.
I have good grades, a unique experience, built lots of unique projects, and a GitHub portfolio with high activity. The apps I've built are used by many customers today. I also have a blog with 600 k views where I share dev tips.
The thing with this work if I'm going, to be honest, is that they expected someone with senior experience, and unfortunately, I don't have that thus it takes many years to build it. So I started here with almost scratch experience of the things they needed.
On the other hand, it feels like a relief in that I can finally focus on my personal business. And maybe this wasn't the right place to work, maybe it requires a couple of jobs until I find the right place.
Despite the bumpy ride, and what such people tell you, I'm not going to give up.
10 years ago, my school teacher told me I was going to be a carpenter (nothing against that) but I manage to get an MSc degree in the engineering field.
There's a lot of shit going into your head when you receive such message like "What if they are true, what if I can't handle programming, what if I'll never be anything etc".
I'm not giving up, this is just a great story every successful person has.
What my number one problem is, and I will f*** win is porn addiction. Get rid of that, and the future is bright.

Kinda tired of people telling me that I'm "wrong" for using PHP. There's nothing inherently wrong with PHP. Any language is only as good as the developer using it, and so long as you're comfortable using it and it does what you need it to do, there's no shame in using ANY programming language. Don't let the these cocky "bro"grammers tell you how to do your job.15

so... i'll probably be joining my first job in 17 days.
My profile is *supposed to be* devops engineer (not that i know much about it, they just felt i was better suited for it than java programming (and i do agree)), although, apparently, the offer letter states java engineer and i talked to them about it, they said that it's a standard template but u are chosen for devops only. i hope that is true.
mostly i feel really upset that college will be over, but i am kinda excited about the job too.

My first work was a paid internship.
My first couple weeks on the job I was supposed to be working on the same machine with another dev to get the gist of the process and everything. Kind of pair programming mixed with mentorship. Sounds cool?
Yeah... Problem is my fellow dev was more interested in spending around 80% of her time chatting around with her boyfriend and friends on Microsoft Chat.
Anyway, I soon got bored of having to look to the other side all the time, and went to our boss and asked for some other stuff to do "because I'm better learning by doing than by example".
Almost 20 years later, I'm still in touch with this dev... But she soon left the job and pursued a career as a translator and interpreter. She was always more interested in talking than programming 😃1 -

Lately it's been 25% programming, 5% fixing other people computer, 70% doing stuff not related to my job2 -
Not learning data structures and algorithms. Not learning programming languages. Actually not learning anything to answer during a job interview.
I am more of a learn-while-you-do kind of guy. I never learn anything, instead just do it. Interviewers think I am useless because I know nothing. But I can get a job done, any kind of job done. I have no learning period, I can start working from first day in a all new language, in a all new IDE, in a all new OS.
I know nothing, and I learn nothing. I am a problem solver. You got a problem, I can solve it.6 -
Why do job descriptions for ONE developer position, list down ALL the known programming languages, all the web technologies and frameworks available? From java kotlin swift php js jquery node to ionic angular laravel python and what not. Wtf? And this is not one, this is about 70 percent of the job descriptions I see these days!!5

Imagine a job where instead of a worker, you're a partner. Hold on, I know that sounds markety...
Let's say instead of an employee, you're basically like a free agent. The company has a pool of projects that are approved to develop, and you can pick what project and what team to work on. More than that, you can even choose how much you want to work on it, and get paid accordingly in ownership stake of said project (on top of your base salary)
What if you were encouraged to submit your own ideas about everything, and that feedback is instantly public, before anyone (management) can water it down, take credit, or worse, suppress it entirely.
What if you could work from anywhere, home, not home, middle of the ocean, whatever.
Plus, we give you a budget to buy your own pc/mac whatever. As long as you can code on it, we don't give a shit.
Also, foosball and ping pong, beer, coffee, cool work environment and all that kind of shit too.
Paid training, for even whimsical new technology, in fact, especially so.
Want to do agile, fine, hate it? fine, just find the team and project that does what you want.

I just worked a shitty manual labor job from 5am - 4pm Mon - Friday while going to night school. I told myself if I didn’t succeed in programming I would be stuck at that dead end job which would eventually lead to my own suicide. I kind of put myself in a position where getting good at coding was my only way out of a shitty/brutal lifestyle. It worked, as I now work from home and make twice as much money. It’s a funny thing to think about sometimes, two years ago I had to have knee surgery due to the physical strain of my former job job, and nowadays I sometimes get a neck cramp from not sitting up straight.
Moral of the story, sometimes growth can only happen when we put ourselves in uncomfortable situations.2 -

Does anyone have an idea about a nice goodbye message to write on cakes for my last day on my summer job?
Requirements:

Most Incompetent co-worker. It was me during my first job. Not humble bragging or some shit. I was straight out fucking incompetent during my first job.
Hear me out.
I graduated my diploma course specialising in networks(from computer to cellular/telecom networks) but I did a few programming courses and my internship was at a lab - did iOT stuffs with raspi and arduinos. I am a A+ student so was giving priority to choose a better internship place. Fun time. So I fell in love with programming. As soon as i graduated I applied for a Java job. Got a job at a domain name reseller/hosting company using java EE. Remember my programming = very basic/OOP concepts/basic SQL knowledge. That's it.
I am that little childish fucker who thought he knew everything and I kept interrupting my coworkers with stupid questions.
Same time, I was under the darkest moments of my life with some family drama/tension headaches.
2 months into the job, one coworker really got pissed off with my interruptions and bluntly told me "*my name,you are stupid aren't you"
The manager was a really nice guy. I will forever thanks him for his advices. He knew I was struggling with family shits and gave me another 3 months probation period to redeem myself. But I gave up. That was back in 2015.
It was a great place I fucked it up. But I learnt precious life lessons. I was young,stupid and didn't know how to handle stress.
I thanks myself for not quitting programming after that experience.2 -

I feel that I miss physical activity in my job. Its just sitting and programming.
I like programming, it's an infinite series of puzzles, and I like puzzles. But more physical would be nice.

Why does every Software Engineering role at the top companies never have PHP or any functional languages in it’s list of languages they want you to be experienced in?
It’s always Java, Python, C#, C/C++, Objective C or Ruby. What about Elixir, Scala, Haskell or Clojure?9 -
I've been said during college that I have to use an IDE for programming. It was okay.
When I got my first job I was said that true programmers use Sublime text or Notepad++. It was okay.
I just discovered vim + tmux and I don't understand how I've never been told about this. I'm the happier person ever.7 -

I have been burnt out for over a year and a half now combined with mental health issues.
I was working an underpaying job, doing senior-dev work for a less than junior-dev pay, with an incompetent understaffed team. The work was so mundane and most of the clients were stupid. I hated work, my colleagues, and most of all I hated programming.
I finally quit the job and quit programming as well. I couldn't touch or see a terminal window without panicking. I've been spending my time binge watching series and movies.
Recently though, I've started picking up coding again. I've been blogging and doing some changes to my blog beside other light stuff.
This is the story of my first burnout and it's taken its toll on me. I hope it's the last one but who knows.3 -

It's so detailed, a person applying would immediately know what is expected of them and what their role will be. Why isnt this like this for most programming jobs?
Example of programming job opening descriptions:
Knowledge of a backend language (ex: python, java, C++)
Experience with databases
Experience with making and using APIs
This does not in any way describe what I will do at all. (yes this is a copy of most useful information of a job offer I recently got). It does not state which language to work with (I know none of the listed ones, but I do know PHP, C# and javascript/typescript (yes I know) for backend languages.
What kind of database experience? I have worked as supermarket employee and when I had to order new things I had to use a application to update the database. (Ive done more, but who does not have experience with any kind of database in any way)
TL;DR The artist job opening description is so well described. Why isnt it that way for programmers more often -

I remember that I made this because he only coded on php and jQuery, and I said to him “you’ll need to learn another languages if you want to apply to a new job”.

So, today I found a great job posting on Linkedin. I was excited and created a unique cover letter and my resume and applied. The job was in another country and I need EU work visa for the job.
The contact for the post was also founder of the company. I asked him, via Linkedin, that if they would sponsor the visa for me if everything went good.
He replied to me that " yes we do sponsor visas, but you have only 3 years of programming experience..."(three dots included). I was like wtf, did I miss important part of post about experience minimum limit or something. I would not like to be spam-applier, guy who applies without reading requirements etc.
I checked requirements again there is no minimum experience limit. Anyways, I thanked him for swift response but damn bruh, do not put unlockable requirements to job posts, so someone's dream would not be crushed.3 -
Is anyone making more money than what they're spending, saving up and having time to spend on a side project/hobby?
I really like programming, but I also want to be able to do other things. It appears that it can be a job that can make one comfortable financially to be able to afford to do other things. Way better than working for McDonald's or some other job.

My most productive is honestly when I'm on a caffeine high (my personal favorite is a 24oz NOS). I have pulled all-nighters. Accidentally.
But getting INTO the mood for programming is simple and kinda embarrassing. I get excited by seeing programming keywords in real life. For example, at a job I worked at, there was a whiteboard what had the word "include" on it forever. Not about programming at all. Funnily enough my initial experience with Java at uni dampened my enthusiasm for programming I had harboured as a kid. Discontinued the course and studied something else. Cue three years later; took an elective programming in C and some other coding subjects and fell in love with coding. Ended up writing code for my bachelor thesis, lots of free time coding, teaching the elective I had taken only a year before, and now it's my job and I love it. :)

I was thinking about changing the course to something like Ethical Hacking or Computer science. The reason why I want to do this is that they teach us openfl until second year and I feel like I learn nothing until now.

So... Portugal already have CS classes for almost 20 years. Don't know what they teach now but everyone would know how to use windows, word and excel (specially kids without computers). My course was computers (what was called back then) and we spend half an year doing logic programming in paper and algorithms...
Any class that teaches programming should always start with logic programming, because you can apply it to any language...
Example: my latest programming class was 3 years ago, I did a CNC course (to work with machines that make molds... Think a 3d printer that cuts steel instead of pushing polimers) and my first question was :don't we start with logic programming or algorithms? The teacher first teased me... Then asked what is logic programming....
Resuming... At the end I was the only one who could use functions and variables... (check g-code and heidenhein, you'll get it).
Other then that I was the only one who got a job working cnc machines, everyone else that also got a job whent for the manual labor part (the molds are finished by hand)...
So... My thoughts... Any CS class that teaches programing should start with logic programming and algorithms... That's the foundation to learn any programming language.7 -
Do we have any C# devs who have switched to Scala?
I've got a very sweet job offer... at a company that develops in Scala. On the one hand, I'm pretty pleased with my depth of C# knowledge, for a variety of reasons. And I've been targeting .Net shops in my job search.
They know Scala devs are rare, so they are aware they need to train new employees, which is nice. But I don't have strong opinions yet on whether this is a language I want to pivot to.

My fifth job was a recruiter. First time that ever worked. But it does work.

When I was 12 i had a Friday afternoon course, as they called it, in QBasic. Nothing fancy but I learned that 'I wanted to work with computers'.
10 years later I got my first programming job. It was with the old Cognos Powerhouse language on OpenVMS. Does anyone remember that?
I had that job for 4 years and it took me another 10 (and several other IT jobs) before I started to learn Java, which I do now for 2 years.

Long version how I ended up programming:
Back in highschool, I was deciding between english and mathematics & computer science.. I filled in the form for the latter. Got a change of hearts but I already gave the extra/backup empty form to schoolmate..
Figured it's for the better because it's a hell to get a job as an english teacher/prof anyways + I dislike comunications with people + documentation (if any) is in english etc..
At the end of first year, I didn't even apply for all the exams because you had to have both programming 1&2 to pass or even be eligible to take the year again.. I figured I'd fail them, so once I actually passed both (& actually not with bad grades), I was fucked.. had to retake the year, which means I lost time + still had to pay the rent etc.. decided to drop out and return home and do the IT engineer course instead to at least have some formal education to help me find a job. Finished that without problems, I 'specialised' in network administration.
I got a job straight out of school as a web developer.. the irony.. got some conflicts with the boss and was terminated (material for another rant).
Later I sought out admin jobs, but got declined because I was overqualified and had programming experince. FML, right?
Ended up sending out mandatory job applications for IT administration & programming to not lose the bonuses & got called up to a meeting in the company I work for since then.
No qualifications for .net & MS technologies, but they liked my CV so the ended up setting up the interview anyway. I didn't know half of the technologies and concepts by proper name, but they figured I understand enough of the content to give me a try. A few years later, I got the most fucked up project they have because of my love for new thigs and trying to understand everything. It's aaaalmost bearable now.. still needs a lot of work, but I'm happy where I am. Saddly, I'm still second guessing if I'm doing a proper job as a dev, but they seem to be very ok with my work. How difficult is it to get an entry level programming job without a CS degree?
I'm gettin fed up with all of my shitty university's bullshit. They constantly try to make a fool out of me, the classes are crap, most of them have nothing to do with programming, and every single fucking day i am constantly anxious about my upcoming exams (that are nearly impossibly hard) and I can never know for sure whether the info that my teachers give me is correct or not.
I am seriously considering dropping out of this fuckfest, but I don't know if I can start making a living after that.14 -

I always wanted to be a programmer but when I started my work in IT trade I got job as administrator... several years have passed and now changing my job is a big deal (degradation of my salary to 1/2 of actually). I don’t know what should I do... my programming skills is not impressive...I know java a bit with spring boot , hibernate and some other things(totally junior lvl of these skills)... but I think it’s not enough...this is really hard situation :/4

What are the signs that you should quit your programming job? I always work 12+ everyday. I came to the point that I'm starting to get sick. Now my boss is mad because I did not go to work for a reason that I'm not feeling well. Plus, we are having deathmarch project management. I could say I'm already burned out. Don't know what to do.6

I'm quite confused about job market here in germany. Beside studies I'm working in a data center and have already some practical knowledge about programming stuff and managing applications. Although many companies I apply for say I need more experience. How the hell should I collect it if I don't get the chance to do so. Do you have seen this in other countries as well?5

When you work with a "Systems Architect" that doesn't understand object oriented programming but still insists on writing code.
This particular person only uses one class in a given application and names it "Class1." He also doesn't understand ORMs and insists using inline SQL statements without parameters because he can do "just as good of a job" with his SQL "cleaner."2 -

My Parallel Programming teacher had a new job at a different school, and ours was year round so the schedule didn't line up, so he just left half way through the semester. He was the only teacher who knew the stuff.
An adjunct teacher came in, which of course got us nowhere. I don't blame the teacher for leaving though, the school sucked. -
I'm working at a big furniture store on the weekends to earn a little bit of extra money during my computer science bachelors.

I am looking for some advice on common practices when doing a programming job for someone else.
So i took a pay-per-hour job from an acquaintance who wanted me to develop a little tool in a web environment. I finished the tool in 16 hours and now its time for me to hand it over. I will probably do more jobs like this for him in the future.
Is it common to add the guy as a collaborator on my git repo, even when there will be code from future projects on there, that will be in-progress and not yet paid for?
Should i develop on another repo/fork and only push 'public' code to a shared repo once my work is finished?
Should i share source code at all, or only share compiled/deployable project folders?
I am not familiar with the common practices in this aspect of the programming business; this was the first programming job i got.

So I heard to get a job as a programmer you need a degree in computer science. I looked it up and apparently computer science includes alot of math courses. I'm not good at math and as far as I can see complex math is not needed to be a programmer. Is there any other degree I can take to get a job as a programmer that doesn't require as much math as a computer science degree does?14

How do you guys learn? As we all know, we have a lot of stuff to learn in our field and it's growing and growing and growing. Other than the programming itself, we also have to learn the other stuff like algorithm designs, programming paradigms, big o notations, git, etc. And if you are working, you also need to learn the business rules your clients might have. And if you're unlucky with your job, your boss might even assign you to tasks with a programming language you have zero knowledge about.
So I was wondering, how do you guys balance your life, your family, your studying and your job? And how do you keep your head from exploding with information?4 -
Went from a c++ backend developer job to a very high paid, very little programming and mostly integration job in the finance industry (big wall st firm). I regret my decision. Money does not make you happy at the end of the day nor does it bring satisfaction. Don't make the same mistake I did. If you're happy as a developer, stick to it, you'll be a lot happier in the long run.

A new job position in programming is going to crop up if programming tools can be created to replace lower tier programmers. It will be a programmer that can manage AI Programmers. Some kind of AI Manager that can sort through, direct, and review code written by code generators. I cannot imagine the shit this person will have to wade through.1

I remember when I first graduated, I could only find job opportunities where companies wanted Mid to Senior levels. Now, 4 years later, I can only find job opportunies for Senior level devs.

Wk49 - Started by learning the basics from a C# book when I was around 14, then found a project I thought would be fun and started programming. My logic worked but wasn't the most efficient, but as I found more projects to do, my skills got better.
I'm now a full time programmer for a large company, I don't have any formal qualifications but now studying MTA.
You don't need uni to get a job in programming, just a passion for learning and patience. -
In highschool I started by setting up an open tibia (OT) server for which I copied and edited lua scripts to create spells and quests. Didn't do anything remotely difficult in those times.
In university I needed to learn and use Prolog. And soon after that I had an OOP course in Java. Didn't really learn Java during that course. And started to accept I would never like real programming.
During a Datastructures course I actually got the hang of java and started to program in my spare time.
Finished the Datastructures course with a good grade which landed me a job as student assistant for a python course.
That job in turn landed me a part-time job as python developer where I learned most of my programming skills.
Now I'm back to working in Java and I still learn everyday. -
Short sorry: How I left the university.
I was working already.
Every morning I was getting a bus to go to the university. My job place was on the way to the university, so every time when I was passing by the office I was thinking about all the things I can do at job, then, simply, I was getting out of the bus saying to myself: fuck that knowledge that university gives. I want to practice.4 -

For this week, there is this student from a high school who's joining my company to complete his job experience project for his school.
Since my company is on the cryptocurrency trading and programming side, I'm not sure what kind of task is suitable for him, and I'm afraid that some tasks might be too difficult for him.
He did mention he was interested in programming and he knows how to use HTML and CSS ( yes I know these aren't really programming languages ).

Sometimes it's hard to go well in job interview because not always the HR person knows about programming enough to let you show off a little bit with some interesting questions and then you end the interview at if you didn't leave a good impression.7

Was excited my company was pushing for talent profile updates. Filled all my computer programming skills in, then language skills, I thought it was fantastic. Go to the email and it states update job skills relevant to job held. Pretty sure that means I just wasted my time. =\

My first idea was C, but after talking to professors in college they pointed out Java would be a good option. They made fair points regarding our local market and job openings. A bit over one year ago I wrote the post about my sadness because I had big problems with changing my job to developer. Today I want to share with you about my happiness because I made that big change :D From January I’m Java Junior Developer, I met many awesome people and increased my programming skills over level I could imagin. Last Monday I changed my job and back to salary from before I started coding. Curve of skills and money is going in good direction. My advice would be to have fun with coding and make things that you like. Consider all other job fields. Only work in programming if it makes you fulfilled and gives you good memories looking back. If you do work as a dev, be passionate about making the code and projects beautiful and high quality. Search for mentorship from developers you admire.

so it appears for the immediate future I'm stuck working a good enough to pay the bills with a little left over helpdesk job until I find some sort of junior or associate dev gig.

I was in junior college working on a mechanical engineering degree taking Calculus 1, some other classes, and a beginner level C programming class.
I decided being a ME wasn't for me as I couldn't handle the math, but the programming was a lot of fun. I ended up dropping Cal 1 and changing majors only to find out that I needed to transfer to a 4 year school to continue on the developer track. A few years later in December of 2013 I graduated with my BS in Computer Information Systems and a couple of years after that I had a great job as a dev. -
Throughout most of my programming career so far, I haven't had too many fights or major arguments with other developers, which is probably some kind of miracle. Although I think this stems from where each job I have been in (except 1 job), I seem to have much more knowledge than the other developers. So even if an argument/discussion would come up, I could usually reason with them logically.

Hey peeps just asking for some suggestions. We are currently having difficult times financially. My dad used to have food business but its now completely shut down and he is doing some sales job. My mom is somewhat educated (she completed till class 12th i guess) and knows very little abouts computers and stuff but she is interested in getting some job that's remote and computer based.
What things should i give her to learn that she could land a job in computer field?
Like am not talking about programming or development but other non tech fields people get paid for... Like data entry , emails writings etc. Currently i have given her courses to learn ms excel, ms word and basic English.
