Shared screen with a client over Skype. Showed them in Postman that their API wasn't working as expected. It was expecting a json. Instead it was giving error code 400 instead of 200.
Message :
"Error: No error. All OK"
I'll never forget the words of the client:
"Don't use all this fancy software, you don't know how to call APIs, open Internet Explorer or chrome and paste it in the bar. You'll see All OK, means all is okay."
*insert you dense mf meme here*20 -
idk why people keep saying Chrome hogs up all the memory
i have 16gb of RAM and it just takes 14gb11 -
New official devRant web cartoon! Check it out on youtube: https://youtube.com/watch/...
Been a hell of a lot of fun making it, hope you all get a laugh!15 -
The worst part of being a developer?
So many ideas, so many possibilities... But so little time to do all of it. :'(4 -
I’m going to fucking kill my boss.
He’s known about how I’ve been writing this fucking ticket (screwdriver followup) for four fucking weeks, and on the last fucking day (yesterday) he tells me it’s not the correct fucking architecture and to rewrite basically all of it using <unknown bullshit> instead, and that i must have it done by today — by this fucking morning — so it can make the release.
WHY THE FUCK DIDN’T YOU TELL ME ABOUT THIS AT ANY POINT IN THE LAST FUCKING MONTH WHILE YOU WERE BUSY NITPICKING MY FUCKING CODE YOU FUCKING CUNT?!30 -
I hate Munich. Instead of using Windows, the city administration had built their own Linux distro called LiMux for all of the ~30000 city's computers. They invested years into developing it, because, hey, it's open source! Now they used it for four years, and just as Microsoft opens an office in town, they throw it all overboard and go back to Windows. Why? Because, umm, they can't even use MS Word, what all the others use and such.
This is such a bullshit. You had a good thing going here, in times of NSA surveillance and monopolies. Munich is such a capitalistic town. I'm happy to have moved out of it for good.13 -
"We care about your privacy [...]"
That's why we make it ultra inconvenient to turn off all of our advertising trackers and give you a broken list of on/off sliders that are slow as fuck. Also, why not just press the 'accept all' at the top of the page? See that big green button? Yeah green is good let's just press it and get this over with right?
Oh and that 'deny all' button? Yeah, a shame nobody actually put some programming into that thing, why not just press the green button next to it? You're only making it harder for yourself y'know...4 -
It seem uncommen because of all the 'hate my job rants' but
I love my current dev job and that makes it for me ideal 😄2 -
To all IT-guys out there, be it the desperate sysadmin or the kind lady of the support team, I whish all of you and your family/friends a merry christmas! 😃4

My primary hard disk of 500gb died with all the software, games, family photos and most importantly all my projects in it.
I'm in hell right now. Worst day of my life.22 -
It's funny how every one says Google respects your privacy.
I remember a few months ago, one of my manuscripts was removed by Google because it "violated the terms and services."
First of all, it's just a psychological crime thriller about murder. I read the terms and services and it said nothing about murder, so I didn't violate anything.
Second of all, assuming they removed it for the reason it was all bloody and about murder, how would they know that? Did they start snooping and read my manuscript?
Fortunately, it was recovered the next day, but if Google cares so much about your privacy, why would they read my document?28 -
everyone in class was so silent when suddenly one guy pops up and says:
" 'TROJAN' VIRUS? I got it! you know? the trojan horse and shit?"
we all laughed
not because of him just realizing it now
but because we all slapped our faces at the same time, it was kinda funny. -
"So we have 20GB of data, we need to show ALL of it on the graph ... oh yea it needs to work on mobile"8

My team member just rewrote all of my code and it looks beautiful and it works but and now i feel like I'm a terrible programmer :'(13

Just got a brand new car coming from a 1999 Honda CRV and holy shit the tech in these things is insane.. basically drives itself on HWY's, can start it from an app, does all sorts of weird stuff.. obviously it comes with risks of being hacked and all that but damn new cars are wicked these days.7

Does anyone actually use the searchbar on StackOverflow? All these years of development and I still haven't used it.11

"Can you do this?"
Sure, give me the information I need...
"We don't have all of it yet"
So I can't do it then
"Well when can you do it"
When you get the information
"Do you need *all* of it"
Well, it's either I do half a job and waste my time, or get it all done in one shot
"The client wants it tomorrow"
When will we have the information?
"We don't know"
Well they aren't having it tomorrow then, are they...
Sales people... don't care *how* things work, as long as they get a tick against their name to show they've sold something...3 -
Trash, trash, trash.
Who the fuck writes this shit?
Who the fuck lets these trash should-be-junior devs roll their own crypto? and then approves it?
The garbage heap of a feature (signing for all apis) doesn't follow Ruby standards, doesn't follow codebase conventions, has `// this is bridge` style comments (and no documentation), and it requires consumer devs to do unnecessary work to integrate it, and on top of all this: it leaks end-user data. on all apis. in plaintext.
Fucking hell.8 -
When you code a bunch of stuff while horribly stoned, and the next day it all still works really well, but you cannot for the life of you figure out how or even why it works.4
-
Dear friends and family, just because I'm a devloper does not mean I know how to fix all of your IT issues. I am not IT.8
-
Thanks to all the sys admins and devs keeping the internet up and running through the holidays. It's a crazy time of year and I'm sure it only means more work for a lot of you at an already stressful time. So thanks again for being the glue holding it all together; we really appreciate your work 🍻

Finally got rid of all those cables, just one usb-type-c-cable to plug in my whole office. Love it!8

So the company behind gitkraken released their version of trello and all that I am interested in from all the features they show off, is really just how they made their vscode plugin to open up a browser like sidepanel, since all the requests for that to be possible, have been halted by the vscode team because there was issues or they declined it
Also what do you guys think of it? is it going to replace trello for you?

I finally finished my implementation of a suffix array construction algorithm! 😄
It takes about 30 mins to process 1GB of text and uses all available RAM, but it works! 🎉
Now I can optimize it, the original algorithm is 3x faster.9 -
The battle is lost. I'm implementing the mother of all stupid features because the sales team wants it.9

My current company decided to do all automation in node.js.
Crawling, new projects, processes, all of it in Node.
Fuck my life.19 -
When it finally works after hours or days of suffering.
Or, when you clean things up and get to delete some garbage code.

If you are completely new to coding, no problem at all! All of the concepts are fully explained throughout the exploration. Just keep in mind that it might be tough and frustrating and times. But don't give up! Coding isn't always easy, but it sure is fun when you get it right.

Don't you hate it when you come across a old internet argument but one of the people deleted all of their posts so now you just see a bunch of out of context replies.3

Just had to install XP to adapt our VB6 client code for a new release of the server. Oh the horror of it all!2

I maintain some of the top 10 most downloaded packages in the Javascript ecosystem - in the order of hundreds of millions of downloads a week. I've worked with hundreds of repositories, thousands of OSS developers, across a few dozen teams (professionally). I've seen just about all of it, for almost 10 years now.
With all that being said, I'll leave it at this:
I hate every facet of the Javascript ecosystem.14 -
Ada Lovelace
Why? For thinking outside of the box and not conforming to cultural standards.. and most of all, cuz she started it all!!4 -
I found a recruiter that read my CV. My CV, he READ it... ALL of it!

When I got my Raspberry Pi a couple of years ago, I had all these grandiose ideas of what I wanted to do with it. So far, all I've done is get it to flash my lights when my dryer's done.5

It worked! After all those years I've talked someone into linux'ising all theit workstations :) now that someone is eventually convinced it would solve most of the problems. Now they are collecting all the bau requirements. Next - testing phase. And then, if all works out well - reinstalling 100+ workstations with linux :)

Engineering managers will say things like -
- "I'll let the team decide what's best for them" & "code quality is our primary goal" -
but then they'll shoot down any & all requests to go back to some old piece of code and refactor/clean it, because of "deadlines".
Hypocrites, all of them.3 -
I know we have a lot of talented people here. Piece of advice, what ever you build, believe in it. See it through. No matter how good of an idea incompleteness won't get you anywhere.
After all every other day we all analyze different successful products and say "huh... that's nothing. Even we can do that".
Well thats the difference "We" can do that, they DID it.
See your ideas through. Stay motivated =)1 -
For all those who post pictures of their screen taken with phone camera (and we all know how crappy that usually looks), there is something called Snipping Tool! As simple as it gets.. Use it ✂😉5

Worst pun of the year contender, a colleague said to a node Dev...

It isn’t easy being a programmer. They code all day, debug all night and go through thousands of code lines trying to clear up all possible messes before going live with their code. Sometimes, it takes a fellow programmer to understand the hardships of another programmer. The same can be said of their jokes.1

There's the possibility that all of you just live inside my head, but it is also considerable that I exist in one of your mind.3

Major state insurance provider, all past and current members data stored unencrypted (including SSN, date of birth, home address, etc.). All developers and contract developers had read access to it. Reported it, nothing was done. Reported it again in my exit interview. Was basically told they had intrusion detection systems in place so it was not an issue.4

I swear every one of this week's weekly rant could be remixed together with the sound of silence playing over it all...
EDIT: now that I've said this I really want to do it...5 -
This is some real shady shit...
I was trying to set my office 365 account we got from school to gmail in my phone and this is what it wants to be able to do. In summary (Dutch screenshots):
- It can disable important safety features,
- Lock me out of my phone at any moment,
- Encrypt all data,
- Or just erase all of it
- And watch me while they do it
Nice.3 -
When that guy *always* starts trying to aggressively optimize his code right after writing it. It really is the root of all evil. DK1

Just tried adding it to a project, all I did was

I've always been kinda lazy about backups and such, thinking it wouldn't be so bad, and "I have my most important stuff on Dropbox".
Just now, for some reason one of my hard drives just stopped for a bit, and I couldn't do anything with it anymore. Luckily it went away after restarting my pc, but it scared the shit out of me, as I almost lost 500 gigs worth of music, films, documents, etc...
This made me really think about the whole backup thing, and I'm creating a disk image as I type this. The time that I spend on that will be much less then the time it'll cost to recover everything. Lesson learned ^^'3 -

Separation of concerns is a beautiful thing.
JSX is fucking ugly. Fuck that shit. I hate JSX with a passion.
Here is one. Did you know that the digestive system works really hard to digest the food eaten?
How about we blend all the food before consuming it? Take a blender and add a cup of coffee, add some salad, add a piece of cake, a few slices of pizza, hot sauce and for good measure add some juice, or whatever-you-eat-for-lunch.
After all, all that food is going to get mixed anyway. This is more efficient!
No? Why not? Because it's ugly, highly unappetizing, disgusting even, and it takes away the pleasure of eating, the enjoyment of a good meal.
That in a nutshell is JSX: mashing up everything together under the pretext of efficiency.
Web development not only is an art, but above all must be enjoyable to those who devote their lives to it. And ugly ain't gonna cut it.11 -
The battery of my good old Huawei Y300 is slowly dying. So I thought it was time to cut the battery consumption a little. What a delusion. A new battery costs < $5 btw, but I'm too lazy to order :)
I've tested 16 highly acclaimed (of about 20,000, didn't count all of them) battery apps - they're all!, and I mean all!, total crap. There is not a single app that does what it promises. And all totally fucked up with advertising - including some of the paid apps. Most apps consume more power than they actually save.
The winner of all this shit was the app "Battery Repair", which supposedly repairs broken cells. Well, well.
All that junk should be thrown out of the store. But, no, these crap apps have ratings of 4.5 - 4.8 with millions of downloads. I don't get it.
The only app that actually works is, hard to believe, Kaspersky Battery Saver.
So if someone else wants to "optimize" their battery - forget it, it's not even worth looking for it.8 -
Well, so I finally got 200 ++s, and now I can finally...
Wear vests! Uh... so that's cool... XD
Anyway, I just wanted to thank everybody for being such a good sport, around here... I've not been here for a long time, but I already feel like a part of a big family, of developers (and, why not, also non-developers...), and that makes me so happy.
In the end, devRant is like one of those rubber ducks developers use to tell things, I guess, lol.
It's just that. devRant is a rubber duck.
And every one of us is making that rubber duck bigger, and bigger, into something so unique and cool...
Something you can talk to (or rant to, I guess haha), something you can express all of your feelings to...
And inside of that rubber duckie there are... all of us. Hearing these rants from developers all around the world.
In the end it's really the community the most important part of... every thing or project, really, whatever it is, online or offline.
Keep on ranting about whatever you want, if you feel the need to...
I hope to hear more about all of you.
Thank you, all of you. I mean it.
Especially you two, who made it possible, @dfox and @trogus.
...devRant is such a cool project.
I sincerely hope it lives forever, it deserves it. You deserve it.
Again, thank you!

Started opening tabs in Firefox Quantum like all you devs do during development. All of a sudden, firefox gave up and stopped loading any new websites.
Bookmarked all the tabs and closed ff. Clicked on again, the old process appearantly is stuck, so it showed a warning, closed the old one and opened it again.
Alright fine, opened all the tabs from bookmarks again. Firefox is again stuck. Realised some of the tabs might be acting up. Just to double check if it really is those tabs, decided to open them in chrome.
It opened fine and I continued to browse in Chrome without any hiccups.

A CS degree is worthless, all my knowledge of modern frameworks comes from YouTube videos, some codeacademy and a little bit of reading the documentation.

What is the purpose of using MongoDB and then adding mongoose?
If you want schemas, relations and all the jazz mongoose offers, have you considered using a RDBMS instead of a datapile system? Most (probably all) SQL databases support schemas, relations and all the jazz you seem to need.
So, ask yourself: Do you really need the functionality of a NoSQL database or do you just want it because it's shiny and new and "everybody uses it (tm)"?4 -

I know I am probably late to the facebook drama, but I think taking out of this all is just how genius and evil all those collector companies are.
I would have probably never thought of collecting data off of mechanical turks and quick jobbers, but they did not only think of it, they deployed their system across multiple jobs, scanning more and more data in from all those connected logins, for less than a dollar per profile, which generates atleast 300 profiles on average.
The real question is why is it allowed for a third party app to actually access all that? even if there's a permission for that, why would such exist?
I really can't see why any application would need access to likes, shares, all friends, all their profiles etc. -

Procrastination is not a bad thing as opposed to how society describes it. It's where ideas and new strategies are invented. Of course if you procrastinate all day then it may be an issue of not getting things done, but fighting it all the time does not help.

Most awesome game ever! It mostly plays by itself and cheats... or maybe it a bug: You (as Autoplay) don't have to beat all the NPCs to advance....
Strangely it feels sort of familiar... O right bc I usually God Mode all games..... But still need to play thru them manually.
Also there's some Chinese left in one of the buttons... they forgot to translate... But maybe that's... Most of time all we care about is the graphics and seeing rank go up....3 -

Control your searches like an ADULT damn it!!!
So we have records that can have any of a bazillion different reference numbers associated with them. No big deal. Everyone does right?
Our customer's love to run reports and so we have this one option for "just look at a hell of a lot of reference numbers". I call it the 'fuck all' search.
Really it is just there to find something that you don't know where a rando string or number might be in the record and just want to do a "fuck all" search across a number of likely fields to find it... and then presumably you'd be an adult and refine your search from there. LOL yeah right...
Customers get lazy and include that stupid option in their reports and we get a lot of.
Customer: "I always run this report (that includes the fuck all search) and now it isn't working. I want records that have ID 2222."
Me: "Yeah well that was only working because you were rando typing '2222' in like several fields and it would find those .... but now you quit doing that so it won't find them. If you want ID 2222, click the drop down and search by 'ID'. That will find it right away."
Customer: "But I want to just search by 'fuck all search' to find it..."
Me: "But then you get all these other records too right?"
Customer: "Yeah but I just delete them out of the spreadsheet ... "
Me: "Look watch this <screen share> there, look all records with an ID of 2222 and no more extra records you need to delete!!! How great is that?"
Customer: "But why do I have to do it this way now, I want to do it the old way..."
ಠ_ಠ
(granted I could add their ID to the fuck all search but we try to avoid adding too much because it gets out of hand / stops being useful the more fuck all it gets)3 -
Today I wanted to automate checking the status of running jobs. There's a UI but navigating it is tedious and I sort of wanted a Dashboard.
So I started writing a Selenium app to automate it. I'm writing the code, inspecting all the inputs. And I'm looking "woah, all of them have nice ids... This should be easy"
Login is ok, but then run into IFrames (can't find the input elements on the page itself).
Fine Google... find the answer and so try again. But wait... It doesn't work???
There's apparently 9 of them on the page. And there's no easy way to identify the correct one...
Spent an hr trying different ways of locating the right one... eventually settling on very complex XPath...
All in all though it took 2 hours... And still not done... -
How are you supposed to read and understand 1000s of lines of uncommented, undocumented apex code and then make changes to it and do it all in time? Salesforce doesn't even provide a free debugger.

I cant really understand all the hate about JavaScript. I learned C as my first language and I have to admit that once you think of js as a kind of C scripting language it all make so much more sense especially when it comes to optimizations which come with syntactic sugar like coffeejs and so on.4

Having developer skills comes sometimes in handy in certain situations.
In my case I visited a new website but first I had to choose their cookies.. but.. it was a list of about 150 radio buttons (150 advertisers), I shit you not.
And so I was like: "No, I refuse to click each one of them". I kept thinking.. hm.. how am I going to do a mass-toggle-off? And then it hit me: if the button "toggle all" toggles all buttons.. then that means if I invert the logic of the call, it means I will turn them all off! And it worked.. it was something like: "toggleAll(!-1)" and I did "toggleAll(0)".
That sure saved me some time! Oh yeah and there are of course other situations when you don't want to use a scraper for getting all the;. I don't know.. menu links out of a page. Console > import jQuery > select all elements with 'a' and text() on their DOM node! It can be done with native JavaScript as well document.getElementsById() but yeah, there are plenty of examples.
Hooray for being a developer!1 -

How many hours does it take to get your configfiles right?
First .zshrc, then .vimrc, tmux, weechat, wpa_supplicant, grub... so much config.
But that's sort of the fun of it all3 -
All of our products have a 16x2 lcd. Every April fool's we make all of them say some offensive/funny stuff. One year I made an Arduino controller for one of the other engineers units it took him a few hours trying to figure out how I was doing it 'cause he couldn't fix it.

Note to anyone who is thinking about using Google Inbox:
Don't use that fucking stupid cuntbag of a tool for important email accounts. Even though it uses POP3 as Google states, it just permanently wiped all 2700 emails from the account via IMAP without any reason just after it was setup, so that even all the locally saved emails on all of our devices connected via IMAP were deleted. Go fuck yourself Google.3 -

Exercise app got it all planned out in my head (well sort of). All day at work I'll be getting ideas on how id make it.
Day ends and I feel motivated to work on it all the way home. Get in make a cup of tea boot pc create a project do initial commit to git.
And nothing. Motivation dead ability to think gone. So I'll sit there sipping my tea trying to get motivated.
Eventually I'll close it down and get motivation to start it again at 4am which isn't an ideal time to start a project. -
Has anybody here ever thought of a really good idea, actually developed it all the way to the end, released it AND made a financial or worthwhile success of it? Interested in seeing/hearing your success stories and checking out the work.4

Dont you hate it when you're making something, and you all ready have millions of lines of code. Then when you go to test it, it breaks completely and it was just because of a mispelled word.
-
Don't you just love those people who sell projects which require months and months of hard work with a due date of two whole fucking months?! And worst of all, they act all fucking surprised when the project is not finished on time and it contains loads of bugs because of lack of testing time. Drives me insane..

Programmers are usually notoriously bad at guessing which parts of the code are the primary consumers of the resources. It is all too common for a programmer to modify a piece of code expecting see a huge time savings and then to find that it makes no difference at all because the code was rarely executed. - Jon Louis Bentley, Writing Efficient Programs9

Out of the Operating Systems, I think Windows has the best file moving system.
Yes, you're unable to transfer files if they're currently in use, but you can start new file moving jobs in the middle of a current file moving process, and as of Windows 7, files that are unable to be moved for whatever reason don't cancel out the entire move.
Linux is next best because files will move regardless of if they're in use or not, and a file that is unable to be moved for whatever reason also won't cancel the entire move. However, if a new file move process is started, it will pause until the current move job is completed, which is a pain if moving a lot of large files.
Mac is the worst. One failed move results in cancelling the entire process. If a file will be duplicated or is unable to be moved, if you cancel that specific move, you have to start it all over again. No way to cancel or skip, just start it all over.4 -

A Sonic fangame (as well as various other projects), too bad I made it all in Fancade, which I discovered too late from its terms of service, that it has anti-artist/anti-dev copyright practices: it gives ALL the rights of ALL your creations to Fancade app dev Martin Magni. So I'm not gonna finish it. It fucking sucks. Don't use Fancade. I spent all my time in recent years developing shit on it which I was proud of, but I didn't upload anything because of that sociopathic bullshit. And ofc G©©gle would then go on to give a "Play award" to Fancade.

Is it wrong to slack off a bit at the end of the year since I’ve done nearly 50% of all of my teams’s weekend and after hours implementations (on a team of 7)? I do all the shit work, get kudos for it for sure, but it’s definitely putting a strain on my home life. I feel guilty, but I kinda want to slack off like hell for the rest of the year.3

Three days out from a field trial, I receive a bug report and change request. A month ago I was told that testing had been completed and the feature set signed off.
Not only have all our manufacturers received their hardware images, not only have they fulfilled our orders but all units have been delivered to our customers!!
After pointing all of this out I hear that wonderful phrase all Devs know and love, "well how hard can it be?"
"Well how hard can it be to flash all of the hardware?"
That has been delivered to all of our customers?
In every state?
All over the whole country?
Just No!2 -
VS Code terminal is so bad... it is basically the worst part of VS Code; the devs can never fix it
The terminal in VS Code breaks for me all the time; it is so easy to break it; all it takes is change the size of the terminal window and bam, it is broken
The devs should either fix their shitty terminal or remove it entirely because it confuses people; I literally see wrong output from my program because of their terminal1 -

Nothin to get a rant simmering like reFuckingRanting! All good, I'll have another shooter while I wait to reinstall, reconfig, rebuild, rewipe, and reRefuse any and all Windows clammy hand of aid it forces down my soul. One of these days, when the whole realm understands we don't need this vast array of exactly the same shit but this one's dick is a little bigger so lets fucking make it, this and not that, and rebuild, push the update, need 4 more updates by noon next day. Nothing stays stable team green, NOTHING. Fuck anyone trying to actually ...make something..We got vulns and updates, backdates, and breaking changes on all 58 of our same shit production line shit shows. I can't count one time in this few year pain olympics that in a single 8 hour span of time the same shit that was working like a fucking wet glove in a horses ass at whiskey 1 was NOT fucking anywhere near coherent come whiskey not 1. Just sayin, is this a cock show boys? Or is is just a wild and rambunctious thought to maybe start compiling/combining some key role playing pieces of softwar? If not, I'll just prep for another round of fucks, and carry on. Sadly, this shit is addicting against many odds. Enjoy your lunches
