Picture taken in the dark but that's how I like to work. In darkness. Illuminated by just my awful code.9

My teammates are working on a legacy codebase so shitty awful, so poorly written, so full of pitfalls, hidden information and intricate relationships, they gave a name to their development style:
Indiana Jones programming.6 -
Dear mobile apps devs,
No one's gonna hate you if you do not provide a multilingual support. Just, please, stop using Google Translate and force the app's language to the phone system's. It's just dumb
Sincerely,
A non native english speaker11 -
Best: the tool that works for the job.
Worst: the tool that doesn’t.
Example: Ruby is great for scripts and web dev, but simply doesn’t work for graphics engines.
Example: SQL is great for fetching data (etc.), but it is absolutely terrible for business logic.
Example: XSLT is great for lowering your faith and your will to live, but it is absolutely awful for literally every other purpose.21 -
@Root has a code review.
CR comment: “Why would you do it this way? It’s awful. Clean it up!”
Totally fair. I had copied the legendary dev’s code, and it was ick. Cleaning it was easy and enjoyable. I cleaned the source, too.
CR comment: “Why would you touch this? It’s outside the scope of the ticket. You could get it working without changing all this.”
Revert…
CR comment: “The interfaces don’t match. Now it’s confusing, and that makes it harder to maintain.”

Reviewing coworker's code:
Me: I see you're doing a convoluted sort for every element twice to get your two lists in sync... 😐
CoWorker: Yeah. *straight face, no regrets* That's the only way to do this.
Me:... Uh... No? You can just manage one list with a simple struct and then use the the standard sort.
Coworker: Yeah sure I know. But it'll take time. We don't have time.
Me: *aghast* This is embarrassingly bad code!
Coworker: Don't worry, later on I'll use a hashmap for it. But this needs to be pushed now.
Me: *to myself, no you don't need a hashmap*
Okay, you do you but I can't back you on this. It isn't going to take a lot of time to correct it.
Next day.
Coworker: Hey can you review my code again?
Me: You've made the changes already? *in a bored tone, knowing that they wouldn't have changed shit*
Coworker: No this is a different file. Our manager agrees that we can worry about performance later.
Me: Sure. *😀🔨🔨*
Few weeks pass by:
QA: The operation takes absurdly long time to complete even with the smallest data. Ten minutes for X is unacceptable.
Me: Who would've known? ☺️21 -
Rebuttal to all these beautiful wiring closet shots. This was taken at my first internship in 2002. As green as I was, I still knew this was awful.
(Pardon the low fidelity; it's a snap of a 14 year old printout!)4 -
Oh, it's been awful. A mandated email about washing hands. A slurry of awful jokes every time someone sneezes. Send help.8

I always use brackets for clarity even if there is only one statement inside them
if (boolean){
function ();
}
Cus it's so much easier to read, and if I need to add statements after the if I don't need to remember to add brackets. Plus the else may need brackets and an if with no brackets but an else with brackets looks awful.14 -
Have you ever seen an app or website so awful you seriously consider to apply for a job at its maintainer company just to fix the flaws?8

I hate, HATE MYSELF!! I am an awful developer. I am an awful person.
I am trying so hard. To be a better person. To be a better developer. But, as a person I am again finding it difficult to empathize. At work, I really want to explore MERN stack but that I have to do it out of working hours. And damn! work is too much, I don't get time.
I need to work on a new project, for 2 months the discussions with MILLION TEAMS ARE GOING ON!!! NOTHING!! NOBODY HAS ANY IDEA!! THEY MIGHT FIRE ME!! I AM STRESSED!!
IT'S 1AM HERE AND I AM WRITING UNIT TESTS!! I want to cry. I want a partner maybe who can support me or maybe it's my mood swings.28 -
Arts and crafts: developer version.
Context: spent all day making an ER diagram from an awful SQL query I was handed. Got sick of asking for it from the contractor who made the DB.
Yes, that's one query.25 -
My home feels like $work owns a corner of it, and I can’t walk near there without feeling this this intense psychological dread.
Lack of time boundaries is pretty awful, too.6 -
My friend was approached by a client who insisted that his website should be in WordPress to facilitate future maintainability.
That's how y'all end up having to maintain those awful pieces of mess. Blame the client, not the developer.7 -

Recruiter: Hi practiseSafeHex, you were speaking to one of my colleagues recently and I know at the time you said you weren't interested in interviewing with us. I just wanted to check is that still the case?
Me: Yes I haven't changed my mind since last week. You still have awful things on your glassdoor page for my country, and its still a role / area i'm not interested in. Please read my responses and please fuck off2 -
After 2 years of being forced into writing PHP 5.5, we've finally convinced upper management to let us switch to C# instead. It's coming in a few weeks. Words cannot describe how much I hate this god awful language.... C#, save me my sweet, sweet, strictly typed goodness.11

I see too many back-end rants against front-ends.
Should we talk about table layouts, malformed html, programatically generated spaghetti wrong markup, css absurd class naming, infinite div wrapping (div-itis), awful usability, poor legibility, terrible typography, wrong color palettes and user-unfriedly design? To name a few horrors i've seen so far.
Some people won't admit that their contempt against HTML and CSS being 'not real code' actually hides their inability or unwillingness to learn it. Or they need the feeling of superiority.11 -
Does anyone else get that awful hot feeling and rapid heartbeat when breaking a site on production? I have nightmares about it 😬2

Went outside for a jobintervju ...
Isn't it just horrible to go outside and meet something called other people? My GF said it could be good for me, yeah right!
I even saw something called a sun. It was really bright, must be awful to have to watch that thing everyday.8 -
I was talking with a guy who is making an android app for his thesis but hes "shitdamn awful in java". I offered to help because im so fucking nice.

I prefer watching YouTube tutorials created by natural, cursing and burping developers to videos created by sterile people with fake smiles and awful jokes.1

Most tedious part of my day...
While meetings are boring and awful and all, it's probably spinup times for me. Each and every change requires a minimum of 35 seconds of spinup to test. If i'm testing something with mailers or other daemons, that increases to easily 90+ seconds (plus the worker thread pickup times).
It's not enough time to do anything useful, and more than enough time to lose my focus. It turns every task into boring, tedious struggle. It's awful.
Apart from my coworkers, this is the single worst part about my job. (Okay, the awful code quality totally pushes this to third place.)4 -
My development process seems to go:
1. Write code
2. Believe that said code is amazing
3. Write more code
4. Revisit earlier code and start to doubt it's amazing-ness
5. Get frustrated that it could be done better
6. Redo 1 and repeat cycle
Seems a massive waste of time but I tend to like taking a different approach as soon as I find I'm getting stuck with the previous one.
I then get encouraged to take the quick/easy approach which seems like a backwards step and not worthwhile because I know it won't be as fast/efficient.2 -
Omg visual studio is a piece of SHIT!
I'd rather code java in eclipse than another line of c# in visual studio.
Once you work in IntelliJ other IDE's are awful.5 -
Day 3 of getting this god forsaken react app to launch!!
My fucking god you cock suckers make life difficult.

I've been hunting for a new job for several months because my current company isn't growing my skills any further. There have been many setbacks, a few rejections, and that awful lingering imposter syndrome. So I finally dug myself out of my self pity and began learning things that my current company doesn't implement – JS frameworks, UX practices, etc. Today I had an interview that felt more like a conversation and collaboration than getting grilled about terminology and bug fixes. No matter what the result, I've been inspired to learn again 😌undefined and if you're in the same boat - keep going! just thought i'd share :) rekindled my coding love13

I just had my first job interview. It did last for about 45 minutes.

So, the uni hires a new CS lecturer. He is teaching 230, the second CS class in the CS major. Two weeks into the semester, he walks in and proceeds to do his usual fumbling around on the computer (with the projector on).
Then, he goes to his Google Drive, which is empty mostly, and tells us that he accidentally wrote a program that erased his entire hard drive and his internet storage drives (Google, box, etc.)...
I mean, way to build credibility, guy... Then he tells us that he has a backup of everything 500 miles away, where he moved from. He also says that he only knows C (we only had formally learned Java so far), but hasn't actually coded (correction: typed!) in 20+ years, because he had someone do that for him and he has been learning Java over the past two weeks.
The rest of the semester followed as expected: he never had any lecture material and would ramble for an hour. Every class, he would pull up a new .java file and type code that rarely ran and he had no debugging skills. We would spend 15 minutes trying to help him with syntax issues—namely (), ;— to get his program running and then there would be a logic issue, in data structures.
He knew nothing of our sequence and what we knew up until this point and would lecture about how we will be terrible programmers because we did not do something the way he wanted—though he failed to give us expectations or spend the five minutes to teach us basic things (run-time complexity, binary, pseudocode etc). His assignments were not related to the material and if they were, they were a couple of weeks off. Also, he never knew which class we were and would ask if we were 230 or 330 at the end of a lecture...
I learned relatively nothing from him (though I ended up with a B+) but thankful to be taking advanced data structures from someone who knows their stuff. He was awful. It was strange. Also, why did the uni not tell him what he needed to be teaching?

I left my country (France) because of the working conditions that are absolutely terrific in software engineering.
Basically, 80% of the time you will be hired by agencies which rent you in a dishonest way to other companies. Half of the later use the agencies services because they are scared by the work code, which is tough but fair, and the other half can’t hire because the agencies put a lot of money to get the engineers and make money by renting employees.
Most of the companies you will work in in France will have outdated stack, and an awful bureaucratic hierarchy.
Your boss will suspect you do nothing.
There is also an untold competition taking place in every companies : who will stay the longer in the office, sometimes taking place until 8pm.
I moved to the UK, the country is absolutely awful, but the working conditions for engineers are a way better, more realistic.12 -
Fairly new here. Saw the ad for this on instagram and thought it was the coolest idea ever. Thanks guys for making this app :) now I can rant about how awful my PM is.2

Just finished recovering all deleted files from my old hard disks I found in the attic, just for fun.
I was hoping to find some old photos or something. Instead I found my awful old Qt code.

First week in the job and I was told to update an intranet page. Opened it in notepad, made the change and saved it.
Turned out it was a SharePoint site and saving it in notepad broke all the links and turned it into a static page. Even worse, it was the homepage of the intranet.
I blame lack of training and, in hindsight, how awful SharePoint is.
Anyway, at least we successfully tested the backup process...1 -
Confession: I'm launching a major project for a client this time next week. It's some of the worst code I've ever written in my entire life. It's beyond awful, but I have no choice. It's sure going to be fun fixing it for the next 2 weeks post launch.8

I know being hostile to new users is not ok.
But have you seen the shit new users post? Who wants to be part of a community of simple minded and unexperienced idiots?
New users do it all: awful english, strawman, meme reposts, and now, advertising.
I wished there was a "above certain karma" filter, so I could avoid the trash.
But there's not, so the only tool I have is telling them their arguments are stupid.
I don't mind someone BEING a beginner. But as such I would expect them stfu a bit.16 -
I setup an email server a couple of months ago.
The amount of port scans and brute force attacks I've received this month alone is awful.

Today is a stark reminder of why i want to leave here. First we couldn't do anything because production was down which blocks dev login. Then support tells me I need to work harder because my bug count keeps going up. But what is in my bugs? Feature requests, global changes, and work that isn't mine. Gee thanks :( Why does support get to comment on my performance anyway by something as dumb as a bug count? Grrr.5

A friend of mine once buried an exception deep in some code that any reasonable programmer shouldn't ever come across that said "you're the worst person I know"
A few days later when a guy in our project was working on his awful patchwork of a database mapping he managed to somehow actually hit this exception. We all got a good laugh out of it! -

I've discovered https://repl.it this week and it's pretty awesome!
I'm teaching my gf some python and haskell at the moment (for her fundamentals of compuer science course at university). They have to use IDLE for python and winhugs for haskell ... and it's awful.
So I was looking for something like JSFiddle for python and haskell, something you can use for a few quick lines of code.
I came across repl.it and it's great. No registration needed, many languages to choose from and a quick way to share code. Really good online IDE :-)1 -
Been working in Linux server for a while, doing devOps and basic task automation with bash.
Today I have to write some .bat task for backup and moving files in Windows first time against .bat . What the hell was this people thinking when they made the .bat sintax is just awful. I understand is old but why. And tried also powershell still crap.8 -
I really really really don't like Windows. The amount of awful updates that I have to do all of the time, the fact that my mother just had Windows updates try and run, fail, try and run again, fail again, and then try a third time. But I'm stuck with it, because if I try and run a Linux live CD, my computer has a fit. Because Ryzen. Fantastic21

Hey React, why won't you die?
Seriously, you are cumbersome to use, heavy as shit, awful syntax and do only the most basic reactive operations possible.
Why do you have to re-render un-changed components?
You were good when you came out, but please, get the fuck out of job requirements everywhere.17 -
I felt like being the cause for “that dreaded legacy code“ and wrote 250 lines of C preprocessor macros for generating bitfields in a large header file automatically, with the goal of simplifying and clarifying register access for all peripherals in the end. Then, I found out that SDCC's optimisation for bitfields is absolutely awful (if existent at all), and I don't really want to use these abstractions if they have a performance impact.
Did I deserve that?7 -
OsCommerce is literally the most awful piece of software ever. Granted, I'm migrating a version from 2007, but even still.
The admin area has a screen to set related products to a target product.
The page takes an age to load, even longer to save and is god awful to use from a UI POV.
Why may you ask?
The OsCommerce devs decided to display a flat list, which check boxes of ALL products in the database.
So for the site in question, that's a single list of 167,000 products, without pagination. Some of the worst development/design on a single page I've seen since last week when I inherited a god awful butchered Wordpress site :| -

Oh, well. Work on bad projects with bad clients/managers, for the sake of the money, it's a life sucker. At first I thought it was not a big deal. I was collaborating to someone's elses business and doing the best work I could.
I was tired, depressed, sleepless, having allergic rhitinis every two weeks, frustrated without any opportunity to grow intellectually, fearing clients calls and emails, and... in denial.
Since last year, I decided to stop working on some kind of project and for some kind of people. As the remaining contracts and projects were being wrapped up, I started to feel relieved, despite of all anxienty of let go long term clients and see income lowering.
Then I started to use my free time and savings to futher my education, send cvs and work on side projects. It's not an easy transition. I'll still need to keep working on not-so-good projects to pay the bills, however, I've been selecting more.
Slowly I'm recovering my life, health and enthusiasm for cs again.
I'm learning to not give a fuck and it really helps.1 -

I spent ALL of friday trying to get some code to work (some awful MS Analytic Server stuff). I usually finish at 6pm. I was getting very frustrated, as it's for a project that I've made some big promises on.
So at 5:30, I started throwing random ideas at it.
At 5:58, it worked.

The last week or so, my boyfriend and I have been sleeping almost nonstop. It's beginning to concern me - we're always tired. We'll sleep 8 hours, wake up for maybe 4 or 5, and then sleep another 8 hours.
Is this the weather? Quarantine? Are we getting old? We're getting absolutely nothing done and it's awful. Wtf.
I actually have a history of chronic (diagnosed) insomnia which I grew out of in my late teens thankfully. Sleeping *all the time* is much, much worse.18 -
The switch from “Wild West” to ITIL uncovered so much bull crap. 20% of the people where doing 80% of the work. And then people were keeping some things alive by shear will, once Changes and Service Requests were required, it was shown how awful the environment truly was and how few people in the company knew how anything worked.

So no dev lead has the balls to bring it through the board, so you are stuck with ancient and awful code.1 -
When our org got sold to another company, and we weren't informed about anything that was going on. House search has never been as painful as 2021. Not only the websites are shit at stopping agencies from outright lying on their websites, but also they can't even give you a quicker browsing experience. All the click click clicks just to view one fucking option. Duplicate advertises, photos from "a similar apartment", no 3D showing, no blueprints, etc. , and all in all, awful experience all around that nobody cares to fix. 😒5

How surprising is it when a person designs code in a very clear and impressive structure and just when you think about asking them for guidance, they reveal themselves to be complete turds?
I've been working with this person's "infra" code, at work. I've rewritten some classes to use their infra. I had a vague idea of how the classes work. I had no idea of how their code works. Expectedly, there were some issues but now only minor ones remain.
I asked them for a description of what I'm supposed to do for the few bugs I'm facing. They replied in such a condescending tone, it made me want to punch them through the screen.
Almost a month later, we're still going back and forth with emails. I've been swallowing it and responding calmly. I never got direct answers. Always deflections to irrelevant things or veiled insults. I took it because they did correct one silly error of mine that actually my code reviewer should've caught. (What's worse is that it got introduced by me just before my review and commit.)
But does that give them the right to insult me in front of the whole team including my project manager? I got a reply today from them with everyone of note in cc implying very clearly that I have not done any work. They highlighted a line from my code with some todo tag (that was not meant for them) to make their invalid point. A line that's unrelated to the bug I asked them about. This is after I proved them wrong when they insisted that I had done something wrong about a feature related to the bug.
If you don't understand what I asked for fucking ask me to ask again. But do not fucking try establish yourself on higher ground by pointing out irrelevant things in my code.
I was shocked and enraged that they'd do such a thing. I double checked everything like a mad man. Despite knowing that the fix has to come from them, I was instantly transported to the noob stage, grasping at straws. I wanted to send a really scathing reply right away but my manager asked me to wait.
My mind is now a see saw shifting between a panicked noob questioning every fucking thing I ever did in my nada life and a hungry enraged monster looking to maul that fucking shithead for burning me like that.1 -
So this is what a test looks like here in my school...
I really like my teacher but his test are... uhh... fucking awful.
I mean the code isn't even indented ffs! Like wtf?!? How should one be able to read this bullshit?
The questions are shitty too.
Also please add line numbers so it is easier to describe how things work in the code.
AND USE FUCKING A4 PAPERS FFS!!!

Ubuntu 18.04 official release today!
And if it sucks, switching to Manjaro. It freezes on me once, and I'm done. I've been using the beta and it's been AWFUL (I know it was a beta, but I wanna use my computer w/o random freezes)2 -
Took the weekend to finish my phase out of Windows on my desktop and laptop.
Finally going Linux full time!
Goodbye constant forced reboots, awful updates, and lost files!5 -
defuq!!
I was on the airport and wanted to buy a millefeuilles to eat, those bustards buy the single piece fir almost $2.5 (few meters outside the airport it's just less that $0.5).
Let's do the math: the dimensions of one piece is almost 10x5 cm, which means a surface of 50 cm² (0.005 m²).
So a m² of millefeuilles costs $500, what the shit, a m² awful millefeuilles is more expensive than m² of land in a respectable area.10 -

Which phones do you recommend?
Which have given you the fewest problems?
I want something with custom rom support so i can add my own problems (duh) and to make it prettier. Apart from that, the only other deal breakers are a lack of wireless charging (I have children who break everything) and an awful screen. I'm not really picky about anything else, but I do want it pretty.
Anyone have a phone like this that they actually like?17 -
SO MAD. Hands are shaking after dealing with this awful API for too long. I just sent this to a contact at JP Morgan Chase.
-------------------
Hello [X],
1. I'm having absolutely no luck logging in to this account to check the Order Abstraction service settings. I was able to log in once earlier this morning, but ever since I've received this frustratingly vague "We are currently unable to complete your request" error message (attached). I even switched IP's via a VPN, and was able to get as far as entering the below Identification Code until I got the same message. Has this account been blocked? Password incorrect? What's the issue?
2. I've been researching the Order Abstraction API for hours as well, attempting to defuddle this gem of an API call response:
error=1&message=Authentication+failure....processing+stopped
NOWHERE in the documentation (last updated 14 months ago) is there any reference to this^^ error or any sort of standardized error-handling description whatsoever - unless you count the detailed error codes outlined for the Hosted Payment responses, which this Order Abstraction service completely ignores. Finally, the HTTP response status code from the Abstraction API is "200 OK", signaling that everything is fine and dandy, which is incorrect. The error message indicates there should be a 400-level status code response, such as 401 Unauthorized, 403 Forbidden or at least 400 Bad Request.
Frankly, I am extremely frustrated and tired of working with poorly documented, poorly designed and poorly maintained developer services which fail to follow basic methodology standardized decades ago. Error messages should be clear and descriptive, including HTTP status codes and a parseable response - preferably JSON or XML.
-----
This whole piece of garbage is junk. If you're big enough to own a bank, you're big enough to provide useful error messages to the developers kind enough to attempt to work with you.2 -
Am I the only developer in existence who's ever dealt with Git on Windows? What a colossal train wreck.
1. Authentication. Since there is no ssh key/git url support on Windows, you have to retype your git credentials Every Stinking Time you push. I thought Git Credential Manager was supposed to save your credentials? And this was impossible over SSH (see below). The previous developer had used an http git URL with his username and password baked in for authentication. I thought that was a horrific idea so I eventually figured out how to use a Bitbucket App password.
2. Permissions errors
In order to commit and push updates, I have to run Git for Windows as Administrator.
3. No SSH for easy git access
Here's where I confess that this is a Windows Server machine running as some form of production. Please don't slaughter me! I am not the server admin.
So, I convinced the server guy to find and install some sort of ssh service for Windows just for the off times we have to make a hot fix in production. (Don't ask, but more common than it should be.)
Sadly, this ssh access is totally useless as the git colors are all messed up, the line wrap length and window size are just weird (seems about 60 characters wide by 25 lines tall) and worse of all I can't commit/push in git via ssh because Permissions. Extremely aggravating.
4. Git on Windows hangs open and locks the index file
Finally, we manage to have Git for Windows hang quite frequently and lock the git index file, meaning that we can't do anything in git (commit, push, pull) without manually quitting these processes from task manager, then browsing to the directory and deleting the .git/index.lock file.
Putting this all together, here's the process for a pull on this production server:
Launch a VNC session to the server. Close multiple popups from different services. Ask Windows to please not "restart to install updates". Launch git for Windows. Run a git pull. If the commits to be pulled involve deleting files, the pull will fail with a permissions error. Realize you forgot to launch as Administrator. Depending on how many files were deleted in the last update, you may need to quit the application and force close the process rather than answer "n" for every "would you like to try again?" file. Relaunch Git as Administrator. Run Git pull. Finally everything works.
At this point, I'd be grateful for any tips, appreciate any sympathy, and understand any hatred. Windows Server is bad. Git on Windows is bad.10 -
Objective-C is an awful programming language that nobody should ever use for anything.
Also you dont know how important unit tests are until you have to deliver an enterprise level application without them.
Biggest one Ive learned recently, managers will promise you the earth to keep you around as long as possible, and they will go back on every promise and call it a "change in priority" -

I've decided to take a look at flutter today and boy... I must say I hate writing layout for it.
Not cause of all those margin thing no.. It's just too verbose, awful.
I don't want to spend that much time writing the UI, I want to focus on the logic.
Even XML was better than that.
I think I'll wait for a layout editor before coming back to it.
But I have to admit that hot reload is really nice after spending so much time waiting for my builds on Android 😓7 -

argh!!!! The fucking IT guy just went in and changed shit without permission on the company intranet I manage. It was awful! This is a Google site so easy to fix it but mothafucka jeez!!!

You guys upvoted a lot my previous rant and this makes me partially sorry, because it means you either witnessed or lived a situation like mine!
So to all the devs out there dealing with an awful work condition, an awful manager, awful teammates or awful wathever: stay strong and remember: you are not married to your company nor you are forced to stay there! Search for a better place, because you deserve it! (And also because happy devs make better code, if you don't believe on yourself and want one more excuse!)2 -
I posted a little while ago about the response I got from my boss when telling them I was leaving in 3 months' time to form my own business. In short - it was awful.

So far, I am very pleased and excited to learn how to use my phone to its full advantage from now on3 -

Recent rant about hipster styled mobile-first websites which actually look awful on a desktop PC reminded me of this. How is this a good UX if I have to zoom out your page every single time? C'mon, I am not blind ffs!
You want some relevant info? How about a video that takes 90% of your screen instead?6 -
I don't want to ever hear that you're proficient in JavaScript if you put a callback function call inside of an async function right after using the await command.
All you manage to do in the end was make a simple function that gets data to populate a dropdown menu into something that is absolutely more awful to look at than the worst callback hell possible.
Refactoring this code base has really questioned my sanity and how much I'm willing to spend on alcohol.4 -
So when are all of you going to admit that React.js is useless? It's awful and miserable and doesn't do anything it promises to.
It's not faster to write code, it's not cleaner, it's not easier, it's just a ton of boilerplate and it can't even handle simple animations.
If Facebook didn't create it, everyone would think it's ridiculous and stupid.. Because it is.
Stop trying to be cool and just fucking deliver fucking business value.56 -

Who the duck designed the common app interface? It's bloody awful just straight up awful. Why do you have to click out and then click back in to delete your previous search? Like wtf. Also when they ask for parents' country of birth but it isn't on the drop-down lousy because it didn't exist. It just looks like some lazy programmers did the bars minimum not caring about how it'd look or be to use because yknow duck that. Wow ok I'm done.1

Every problem I ever had with a game development engine, only made me hope for something better.
After all, we’re independent developers, not activision! What the hell is an “indie” anyway? I’d even grown a sort of disgust at the term, as if saying it, without having published anything, was being fake. The word felt vapid. Like calling yourself an e-celebrity, or apple putting an i in front of everything.
(Don’t you know its year 20xx, we attach coin to brands now! Dogecoin, ecoin, walmartcoin, hospitalCoin for when you really really just want an appendectomy).
This is my newsletter, Y Intercept, and the story of my many embarrassing failures, and what I have learned from them.

Finally got the last round of god awful bugs in this god awful shit code fixed. I thought I could finally get back to working on the new build, but no. My reward is updating a god damn pdf, because none of the fucktards here know how. I have to work backwards through all kinds of pointless bullshit code that apparently generates it, all to find a mother fucking image that just needs to be replaced. Thanks a lot, to the tryhard motherfucker who wrote this code. I hope wherever you are, you're in complete agony.2

It's incredible how many sites don't check / handle localStorage permissions.. they usually just completely break.
That is they use a div to block the view despite the page usually still working ..
There literally is an API to check for permissions..2 -

I love our scm. It's such a great piece of technology. It really aides me as a developer. It really makes my life easier. It isn't missing any features. It's worth the money it costs.
All of that is a lie. -
Went for an interview yesterday, the interviewer was trying to speak in British accent, it was really bad. I was cringing the whole time.

So there's this remote guy on my team that basically doesn't do much and when it does fucks up. This is a guy with a lot experience but it doesn't seem even give a fuck. However this happena so rarely that it is awful to work with him.1

Why are hooks so awful?
What justifies having everyone using React relearn how to do things when hooks do not bring any new features to React?
Why does getting setInterval to work with hooks require a ~3000 word blog post by a maintainer which constantly assures you this IS a step forward?
Is scrolling up and down a class component really so hard that this clusterfuck is worth it?

Normally when I revisit an old project feel like tearing out my awful old code and rewriting it all - not today; today I feel like I am backsliding. I sidelined my personal project months ago when my real work got busy.

Looking forward to many nights tinkering and getting my memory back. -

Yep, IntelliJ is definitely worth $60/month. Look at this feature where it can’t create a java class.

All summer I've been working at a company doing some full-stack development. Starting my last year in university, I really wanted some real life experience that ties into my studies.
I did not expect to find horrible, undocumented, code that has been written 5 years ago, where the senior developer who wrote it doesn't even know what it does. The worst part? They are STILL not documenting! I tried to document, but got this in return "you don't have to document everything. Especially if it is understandable". But they don't even understand their old code!
Monday morning, we had a meeting and they asked what I thought of working here, seeing as I am done this week. I respectfully told them that their code is not readable, and it will make it hard for new employees to understand. The boss in return says "you're the third newly hired employee this summer to say this... Maybe we do have a problem then"..
No shit. Please for the love of God, comment your code!2 -

So far it has been a collaboration with a shoemaker. I produced the most awful website I (never thinked I) could make… and not by my design, quite the contrary! This guy was there asking me to break rule after rule of design and would refuse suggestions and advices to follow their vision!
Pointless to say the site was down 6 months after being created.4 -

My most recent workaround occurred last week.
We have a demo very soon and I had to change our iOS app to use a new Web API endpoint for uploading content.
Long story short: The existing code is so awful and rigid and dependant on Core Data that I ended up having to completely bypass the service layer of the app and implement the new endpoint as a raw HTTP request. Its gonna take a long time to refactor the existing service layer. All because the new endpoint has a different content type. -

Currently in our 4th cycle of manual regression testing for a release and still finding bugs. Automated tests? What are those? That sounds an awful lot like it would take time to implement. Time that could be spent fixing the bugs and getting the release out the door.

After some time experimenting with Haskell (with mixed impressions) and quite positive feeling about Scala, I am really shocked by Clojure. I tried simple example from youtube tutorial, but it looks so awful, complex and compared to Haskell and Scala version it is just so verbose. I read that Clojure is a concise language. Is the tutorial bad or is this a fine code in Clojure? I really don't like the code at all...5

I’m just curious, how relevant is slack in the workplace? And is it enjoyable to use or awful like Skype9
-
We are supposed to make a portfolio in school explaining who we are and projects that we made. The only problem is that I have not done shit, the only thing that I've done that was only for the most part ripped from a tutorial (everything else might as well been copy pasted) was a calculator that barely works and looks like shit. So I just sat down for hours got nothing done and felt awful.

Angular devs:
If you're importing a component into another component just to get a value from the controller of the imported component, that's like, awful, right? I can think of at least two other ways to do that more efficiently2 -
That awful distorted American anthem from LOCAL58 sounds in my head and it makes me feel terrified
Children and pets — the smallest patriots
There are no faces1 -
What you are seeing is a serialized 16 Word pages, 50 questions multiple choice quiz, I had to manually transform as it needed some formatting like subscripts and superscripts and the guy that did this did some awful things, like using spaces to make some text go to the next line...
I need to make that quiz builder asap.1 -
They want me to document Nifi flows.... In a spreadsheet
Like... Just...
Abd the existing format is just awful1 -
You know I don't want to hate everyone
Since you guys seem so intentionally narrating ok fucked up mindsets you all apparently create in your psycho offspring
Wouldn't it make more sense to put this suppose duplicate who is like allof you creatures in this ?
Unless I'm gonna be contracted to remove people who do these awful things it's a waste of time really8 -
How do you handle error checking? I always feel sad after I add error checking to a code that was beautifully simple and legible before.
It still remains so but instead of each line meaning something it becomes if( call() == -1 ) return -1; or handleError() or whatever.
Same with try catch if the language supports it.
It's awful to look at.
So awful I end up evading it forever.
"Malloc can't fail right? I mean it's theoetically possible but like nah", "File open? I'm not gonna try catch that! It's a tmp file only my program uses come oooon", all these seemingly reasonable arguments cross my head and makes it hard to check the frigging errors. But then I go to sleep and I KNOW my program is not complete. It's intentionally vulnerable. Fuck.
How do you do it? Is there a magic technique or one has to reach dev nirvana to realise certain ugliness and cluttering is necessary for the greater good sometimes and no design pattern or paradigm can make it clean and complete?15 -
when it takes more effort to writing a bunch of dumbass mocks and stubs so you can have an automated test, than it does to manually test, because you're too retarded to figure out how the fuck easymock is supposed to work, and being awful at your job, also fuck java imports and easymock for being difficult to work with
shout out to my coworkers for requesting more automated tests
can't wait till it all gets deleted anyway because we're going to delete the code we're testing5 -
Client uses CVS, tells me stories about how awful their new acquisition is because they don't use source control at all, only building off a file share...
Points for trying I guess? -
Dear frontend dev,
if you can't check whether a variable is defined or not, why do i have to change the back end to accept urlparam='undefined' as valid and replace it with your default value in my backend? Why are you afraid of 40X's? You should be interested in the bugs of your code.
It feels awful to have a middleware in place catching all errors and replacing them with empty 200 responses 😭. All of this because you don't fucking ensure your variables exist before use.3 -
Are CSS media queries very messy or am I just incompetent? Does anyone have any alternatives to it?
I find it very hard to make decent responsible pages. They either look awful or their source code is just a disgusting mess.6 -
Sober me: *stopping working on code fully documented with comments* let's take a break.
Drunk me: * stumbles across still open code* psh what a nerd *deletes comments*
Sober me: * sitting back down* okay where was I... For the love of!
Drunk me is a dick to sober me. Need to lock stuff up better....3 -
I'm super bored, but I think I found a good way to spend my time.

Guys it's stupid but how do you get motivated for coding ? I'm actually learning C++, it's my first programming language but it's hard to continue, I love coding and making games but I'm a real newbie and I'm 90% of the time completely lost, I've made 1 shitty game but it's from a tutorial, and for c++ I'm still stuck with overloaded operator.
I'm sorry for my awful english but it's not my mother tongue. Do you have something advices ? For example stopping completely playing videogame ? Thx ;)6 -
That awful feeling of going through the mailbox to sort out build issues and defect mail chains, after a day off
-
Using windows scheduled tasks to call a url running classic asp in the background. This page would in turn send out a mail shot...
Awful shit that I did when I started coding in the old days...! -
Finally got myself to buy a SSD for my laptop, so I was thinking about trying Ubuntu Mate...but wtf...
I like it because it is similar to Unity but stability is awful. It breaks every 5 minutes. Very not funny.1 -
I find it really annoying I'm so bad at designing applications, I always have to resort to CSS frameworks as when I try to design applications it looks awful and inconsistent. And also as I'm in secondary school still (high school) when I'm making stuff I have to work on front end as I'm the only person making it and normal users don't like using the terminal. The usage of some CSS frameworks, like bootstrap, is sometimes frowned upon.3

Reconsidering my career as Dev
Because 3/10 times when I see client emails they are redundant, awful to read, there's no acceptance criteria, absolutely nothing, yet when I escalate the issue I have to take the blame for it (idk how that happens), and on top of that fucking Epilepsy fucks me up and just last night when I was reading an email I had an epilepsy episode which fucked me up and my laptop.2 -
I hate tooling around Scala with libGDX so much - Gradle, Gradle Android plugin and ProGuard are just awful.
For example today I got during compilation: "Warning: Exception while processing task java.io.IOException: Please correct the above warnings first."
Grepping build log for (case insensitive) "warn" returns only the message above to correct warnings.
What the hell? I am required to correct not existing or invisible warnings or what? I hate you Gradle and ProGuard, I really do! >:( -
time for crowdsourcing awful ideas because bored!
what don't I need? what does literally nobody need? what is a terrible, awful, no good idea that should never exist? let's make it!
I'll go first: a compiler that automatically resolves compilation errors by removing the offending line continuously until it successfully compiles. defaults to quiet mode which does not report which lines were removed.1 -
So Google create inbox, a pretty good email client with nice interface and features, it works really well and has people using it. Why the fuck they decide to close a working thing? Gmail is a big piece of shit, the interface is awful, can't group mails correctly and lacks a lot of inbox functions.
They can't at least give you an inbox-like Gmail view?4 -
What the f**k is it that all companies want to use JIRA? It's really crap; looks awful, is slow and overly complicated. And most of the time used and configured wrongly.
Are there even any better options out there or is this the only thing we have to live with?7 -
If one of you pod people would like to pick me up and bone me before cloning me I’d be open to that as long as you recognize it’s not for some kind of awful pay
-
Does somebody know Cognos TM1 from IBM and TM1 perspective...
Designing front ends with excel???unbelievable awful!!
Dear internship,Why you do this to me?????
Luckily my new real frontend developer internship starts in June 👍 -
Drupal 7 was a pain in the ass to learn. And handling contrib modules that didn't work or weren't patched in years was an awful experience.
-
Oh yeah, I wanna rant... What is this awful image compression on DevRant?! A lot of time, images posted by ranters are illegible if they contains text. If we are lucky enough, the ranter will then post an Imgur, else... It would be really great to get an image quality equal to DevRant quality... Please!2

When do we consider to "hack" some code in?
I am ashamed that I have to ask this. but the codebase is such a mess that simply adding another function to pass some information to 5 different classes that should not know about this. just to make it work. feels awful to me
wait why do I have feelings I get paid to maintain this shit.2 -
!rant
I see all these really awful dev stories and here I am, without a single one...yet. What are the signs of a bad dev storm brewing?1 -
Microsoft makes the Disk Cleanup tool an optional install for Servers as part of "Desktop Experience" but crams that gawd-awful MetroUI at you by default... 😒 😡2

Best: Learning React JS
Worst:
Having to rush an online training module for our app in a weekend.
It was so raw that I had to alter the database by hand every time we needed a different training.
Awful, stressing, and boring. -
Today Niantic killed classic Ingress Scanner. I think I'm going to quit the game. Ingress Prime is awful! I can't get used to it.3
-
In the market for a new keyboard and mouse setup - my work provided ones are awful.
Only requirements are must be wireless, either Bluetooth or unified receiver, and UK layout
Any recommendations? -
Just saw someone complaining about apple spell check. How about Chrome's spell check? Can we all spam various authorities with anti-competition complaints?
It's absolutely awful and very clearly designed to end up steering towards people just searching for the word anyway.1 -
I wonder what they do with this shit
Why do I keep having to repeat this ?
Maybe so they don’t get charged anymore
You know bullets are cheaper
Boom twenty cents
On a lighter note
If there is still a time period where the worst I have to worry about is walking in on a group of guys getting blown by a topless hotel attendant which is not awful at all send me to that and gtfo -
new Confession(new Rant()).admit("My kludge bit me in the ass. But If I make a series of classes that encapsulate (hide) the awful hacks, one day I can replace the hacks with nice code. This is why I say I love refactoring. But right now, procrastination looks ugly.").asRant()1

Has anyone used bazel build tool, coming from maven/Gradle background I have spent the last couple of days on this thing and I can say it is fucking awful and unintuitive, I still can't figure how to bring in simple external dependecy such as apache commos using this shit2

Bob the builder
Bob the builder sucks
This show is about Bob and his friends fixing things and going on adventures
Bob is an idiot
Wendy is awful.
Scoop is annoying.
Muck is stupid.
Leo is dumb.
Thank god they got cancelled in 20112 -
This is so awful and familiar and I know I figured out what was wrong that I HAVE To post it.
AND NO ITS NOT A RAM PROBLEM !!!
I had to make it animated. I don't feel a big blob image really illustrated the issue.15 -
Ugh posting a review on Play Store is an awful experience. The text editor doesn't let you copy or paste and you can't even see your full review once you've posted the damn thing. Why Google 😡
-
Not so awful I suppose as long as it's produces quality output
Still only interested in davinci
Question
When chatgpt recognizes stateful requests "modify the part of the procedure Jojon where it updates storeitem to add a column verifiedbyhuman and set it's value to true" is chatgpt feeding everything at once to do davinci ?1 -
Unity Controller Support:
Why are controllers awful, it seems like I have to custom each different controller manually to the game. Why can't the the A button on one controller be A on all controllers.
Why can't there be a universal built in controller script that would convert all of the different types controller inputs into a generic controller input that can be translated by just one script instead of writing a script for every common controller... 😠3
