A little bit of bash is what i see
A little bit of JSON in the sun

Just because I'm a programmer doesn't mean I'm some nerd that watches anime, relishes in video games, and spends more time around computers than around girls!
Even though that's all true...10 -
That awkward moment when you are programming with headphones totally ignoring the world around you... then you stop for a moment, you turn around and behind you the other workers are celebrating a birthday by drinking champagne and cutting slices of cake... since at least 5 minutes.12

Spend around 8 hours trying to adapt code I found on the internet to my problem, without success.
Spend around half an hour implementing it myself, with success.
Guess I should put more trust in my skills...3 -

We now have around 10cm snow and it make my way to college around 300% harder,
But I don't care, because this looks fucking beautiful.
Also, I can approve this famous saying about German trains,
"Caution! Doesn't work in case of:
Weather"1 -
Dutch devRant meeting is on!
Although not that many people have confirmed they're coming, at least around 5 have.
Upcoming Saturday around 2pm well gather at the hague central station and from three on we'll see what we'll do :).
Can't wait guys'n gals!30 -
Finally received the sticker I ordered with vim shortcuts. Now ants around me can edit efficiently >.<9

I accidentally broke our office’s tablet device. Operations manager said it will be deducted from my salary next month.
Few weeks later, my operations manager breaks his laptops touch screen. I almost did a naked run in excitement.9 -
When my daughter is around while I'm coding.. I feel disturbed... When she is not around.. I feel distracted (missing her)3

Was joking with my sister about who has more steps. She had done more steps so far, so I said that I would walk 20 times around the McDonald's, where we were going to eat. She replied that she would walk 50 times around it, so I said that I would walk 2 times more around it than she would. She then said, that she would go once more around it. In the end, I explained recursion and infinite loops to her. Her comment was "großer Blödsinn" (German) -> "big bullshit".3

After spending around 8+ hours on an Adobe After Effects project (which I obviously didn't save), at around 12 at night, it crashed.
I lost everything. Was heartbroken. Died inside. Nearly cried. Then I restarted the app and started from scratch.
The weird thing is I recreated the entire thing in around 1.5 hours. Not sure if I'm happy or sad with myself.4 -

found this when wanting to check a notification, paused it multiple times, and my boss was: why does this keep on stopping!
Guess I better not do it again if I want to keep my job lol5 -
Unlimited storage on google Drive for business ! Today is me writing scripts to save all our voice recording in the drive, we make around 5K calls a day storage costs us around $30000 a month, not anymore!4

AOSP
Even though Googles decisions around it are questionable most of the time, I love that we have an (almost) completely open ecosystem for smartphones.
And the thing about it I love the most is the amazing modding community around it. -
I just got the question why I'm moving around so much when I'm programming...
How can you NOT move around!? Let me dance, air guitar, air drum and I will perform three times better! It's my zone :-D1 -
My boss is letting a really strong bus factor grow around me.
I try to show them how to do things but they really can't wrap their heads around it and I keep improving our stack/infrastructure ...4 -
Incompetence of people around me drives me mad. I see a piece of shit code and I can’t stop myself from improving it.
Also better developers around me. I need to find out how they’re better and beat them6 -
Slapping idiots around.
This needs to be a trend.
---
Actual rant :
I'm sitting in this idiot haven completing my mandatory hours doing nothing. Earlier I would spend this time learning stuff but I'm too fed up to do anything. This place is driving me mad and just today I had to suffer through more madness that is blocking me from resolving a bug.(I don't have the license to run the product I'm supposed to be fixing)
The number of inept idiots is too damn high. I try not to be bothered but I can only try so much.4 -
Minecraft mods get me into programming. I used to spend hours yelling at Eclipse for not making that stupid JAR file! 7 years later, I'm pursuing a career as someone who spends hours yelling at a CLI assembler for not making that stupid ISO file! Good times.2

Had to stretch my legs after working for a while so I took a walk around the office. Then I found this laying around in a bookshelf. I might be staying a bit longer today!4

I wonder what the average age is of a ranter on devRant.
I just found out that some of the ranters I have seen around quite often are only around 18 (like I am).
Also I wonder what age people begin professionally programming since I have been working at a company since I was 16 and still work there. (I have programmed since I was around 8 so I already had a lot of experience.)33 -
I'm really enjoying rust now. It was worth the struggles.
I was really surprised to see, a NodeJS server takes around 40-60MB of memory whereas Rust (Actix web) server takes around 500KB-2MB :O whoa! Awesome!3 -
Spent 5+ years tolerating the bullshit of this guy (ex boss) and looks like it was a useless addition to my network.
I always got high praise from him and my colleagues and PMs. However, that never translated to good hikes/promotions/any favours of any type. Except for one time I never protested this because I saved the mental stress for other more important things (and that worked out well for me). It allowed me to sort of strut about the place like I own it and that was cool.
But today I needed to encash a favour from this reptile. And it was trivial enough that I thought I could count on that snake. But he did what he always does. Offered a useless alternative to any actual help.
So he helped, tried 'his best' according to 'policy', but I have to refuse it because it's like asking for water but getting air in return. Fucking chode.10 -
The most recent one.
13 hr of video lectures in around 17hr + 5-6 hr of textual stuff for the test i had today. So around 19/24 hr
Freaking exhausted.4 -
the real truth is that web dev has been running around in circles on itself for over a decade now
"but every framework is 'new' and 'shiny'!!!!"
nah, just more sugar on the same exact concepts that have been around since day 17 -
Me: Do you already have a live USB stick for Windows?
Brother: You mean a dead USB stick, because Windows hasnt got that feature?!2 -
Around a decade ago, I was fiddling with ajax in jQuery. This piece of code had me stumped for around 2 days, why? Because success is written with 1 final S in my native language...
$.ajax({
'succes' : function(data) { },
});6 -
In addition to my last rant.
"Warnings are made to be ignored. Just work around them." - my teacher
No i wasn't able to work around them as i wasn't even able to access my form designer (to add the requested textbox).4 -
Looking around for a new job when I find a posting that asks for experience developing and testing webpages with Dreamweaver... I mean yeah back 15 years ago I used it but I didn't even know it was still around... Maybe they meant Frontpage

It is taking every fibre of my being to not buy a couple raspberry pi zeroW's and just mess around trying to build my own phone, software and all...
Also hard for me to not just buy any pi to just have sitting around 'incase' .-.14 -
Have a spare server at work doing nothing. Think to myself "I'll play around with kubernetes".
Step 1: install openshift (there's ansible, should just work...right?)
...
...
It's been three days and I am haven't started paying around with kubernetes yet. *Sigh*3 -
Dev walks in carrying a 2-liter bottle of Mt. Dew..
Dev: “Check it out, I forgot to bring my Mr. Dew from home, so I stopped at the gas station to up a bottle and they wanted $1.50, but they had 2-liters for $1.89. Much better deal. I’m all about saving money”
Me: “Um, $1.89 for a 2-liter isn’t a deal. Last week I bought several 2-liters for 69 cents each.”
Dev: “Pfftt…for the fake stuff. I want real Mt. Dew.”
Me: “Hy-Vee has all their Pepsi products on sale for 69 cents. How much do you pay for those 16oz bottles?”
Dev: "Only around $5 for a 6-pack. It's a much better deal when I buy in bulk."
Me: "I can buy 6 bottles of 2-liters cheaper than you buy a 6 pack of 16oz bottles. Buying a 6 pack at a time isn't buying in bulk."
Dev: "I hate 2-liter bottles. It goes flat before I drink it all and the soda tastes different."
Other Dev: "Um..what's that on your desk?"
- laughter all around -
Dev: "You -bleep-holes."1 -
Who else is tired of fancy new buzz words in and around software engineering (for practices and ideas that have been around long time in the industry).....
So we have to go back to school for english not the engineering ?4 -
[Not dev related but...] My boss is busy and not around, and the colleague is bossing me around like he's my boss :/ You're not my boss!

After meddling around with all kinds of goopy front end frameworks I decided to take a look at TypeScript (in Angular 2).
I must say, as a Java developer: Why have I only found this now??
Granted, I have only played around with it for one day.1 -
When I see all those People, running around, watching their smartphones and don't see the world around them, I start asking my self if the most used lie on the internet is "I'm not a robot"...1

What can you expect to earn at your first IT/dev job in your country (e.g. junior dev after graduating)?
What do seniors usually get?12 -
I legit never understood the hate for VB.NET in the land of Microsoft development. To be entirely fair, I only used it it that one class at uni. But other than that I had never used it in the real world. The closest thing I had done with BASIC was VBScript, and even tho I was ok with it(even liked it) I damn well know that it is not something that I would use to build web apps with anymore.
But I am inclined to give VB.NET a chance only because I remember being able to make sense of my peers code in school. Just by reading it, sure it might be verbose as all fucking hell, but we were using VS(notice that i said VS not VS Code) and we had all the bells and whistles of autocomplete and intellisense.
Currently tho, I somewhat wanted to try a more modular approach to my fucking around with web apps, we are considering Rails and Django for a project at work. But since we already have windows servers we thought about the possibility of using .net core. We all like C# as a language and I did work with ASP.NET MVC before so we are considering that as well. That and our sys admin had tons of experience setting that as an environment. When developers are not too sure it is good to rely on the admin's expertise. -
Can someone here tell me, Why the fuck is the Inbox app in the Apple App store around 250MB, while the same app is around 7MB on Google Play? Why? Why?
-
Just a thought
If WanaCry hackers instead of spreading ransomware they spreaded Silicon Valley Space Saver like app and the virus inside the app continued spreading itself to around 1 Million pcs, where the app would use around 5GB of storage on each pc giving the hackerd around 5 PB of storage.
Would that be possible like Silicon Valley to create a decenteralized data storage system on pcs all around the world and the app would keep spreading itself and by time expand the storage11 -
Cheated with my beloved 'optimization' to make a go around that fucking bug and then the temporary work around turned out to be nice feature. Great!! 😑 But I am not happy :( fml1

Went to a dev group meet up today. I can honestly say devs are the best kind of people around!
Any FCC people around?2 -
A typical (Covid) day (for me) being self employed. I tend to start working at around 8am, only break to make coffee, and by 3:30 in the afternoon I fall asleep til 5pm. Then I get some food, play my bass, mess around in garage band, drink a bottle of wine, watch some crap movie, go to bed around 1:00am rinse and repeat. I never work weekends anymore. Interested to know your Covid day,.5

Lesson learned today :
Don't get lazy and muscle monkey hanging out your laundry..
Like your code, you'll eventually regret monkeying it.1 -
I just realized if I liked my job and couldn't bitch about it, I probably wouldn't know what to do with myself...

Hello ratnters,
I'm new around here and I'm part of the niche of embedded software developer.
Is there any fellow MCU programmer around here?
Have a great night everyone!5 -
I am currently playing around with hosting an API on Heruko but I also hear a lot of buzz around serverless APIs...
What do you guys recommend? Or do you recommend another host for playing around and maybe getting more serious in the future?1 -
Why does MySQL call databases schemes? Makes absolutely no sense.
Schema is the metadata around your tables or documents. What is Json Schema? Metadata around a json object.
MySQL, databases contain data. Schemes do not! Bad DB technology. Bad...2 -
The most frustrating part with css is like seeing people make animations on codepen where a fkin panda closes eyes or moves around,
And you are like how to Center align this box or this Dam image keeps rolling around the screen -
Fav. thing I've worked on recently?

So since I don't use VLC and I'm pretty annoyed by the fact that it needed to remind me it exists, I decided to purge it.Then not 5 minutes later I realize that, oh fuck, Konsole is missing. In those 5 minutes I had also installed Steam and thought that was what fucked it all up, then I reinstalled Konsole and somehow VLC was back.
Then I tried to just apt remove VLC instead and boom, Konsole was gone
So, sorry, but are you fucking kidding me!?1 -
Since we have apple vision pro you can walk around with in public and AI where you can swap parts of people it’s just a matter of time when someone make application where you walk around and see people naked or hide ads.
Time is ticking.10 -
I actually hate to work when there are kids around.
I get so unfocused when they run amok and shout around that I put points in front of my class names in DOM elements.
<div class=".fuggin-hell">
OF COURSE MY SELECTOR WON'T FIND IT!
Yet another reason to not be a parent, I guess.5 -
unexperienced me just wanted to mess around with vba updating a docvariable in word, now i am fiddling around how to export several values to an external excel-sheet.
that escalated quickly -
Just a simple rant.
Since when do programmers need to fuck around trying to get client server installs working... pissing around in IIS all day when all I want to do is write a bit of code.
Merde alors!3 -
Just had a 4 hour session with an external company to get connections up ... messed around 99% of the time with STX and ETX stuff only. I'm done until monday.

Is it slow ?
taliking about unit tests. I have 2746 unit tests in a project (Covering around 15% of code).
It takes around 2 minutes in local (With good PC) and aroubnd 20 minutes in a pipeline to execute.
Would you people say it's slow ?9 -
Apple better not be slowing down my Ipad Air 2 to save battery because goddamn it costs $300 to fix at my work!!!
-
It's a sad way to live, where you only want like-minded people around you.
Like you being a software developer only wanting to be around software developers.6 -
I don't see my around much aged people.
Its like around 30-40s. I wonder if I can survive long in this sector or should I see for another options. But I love being dev :(1 -
school got to try a old win 3.1 computer played around with paint drawing mario...
then we got a computer at home and i got Delphi with a computer magazine around age 14 and I've been coding ever since :p -

Throw strings around separately

Just finished 15% (around 9hrs) of my JavaScript course! Hopefully I can finish it before Udemy eventually goes around and messes my account up, just like they always do for everyone else...
-
My life centered around coding... Not so much these few years though.
So that's around 15 years? But I just don't feel motivated or interested in doing anything new.... Unless I get paid... -
Any of you guys working around Silicon Valley?
I am visiting San Francisco in april from Denmark, and I Wonder if you guys know of some must-see tech related locations around Silicon Valley?4 -
