I’ve been on devRant for around a year or so but only just signed up. Hello everyone.
Today was my last day at work. It’s time for me to start my own business rather than constantly work for one. I have an idea for an app so we’ll see how that goes.
Wish me luck!20 -
Bought a dedicated server a while ago and now have around 1800gb out of 4 disks in it.
Hardly knew how to work with proxmox/raid setups and so on a few days ago.
Can configure the basics without thinking as for now!
Gotta love learning stuff with open technology and seeing yourself grow 😃6 -
Just spent 30 minutes trying to work out why my page will not load a JavaScript file even though I could manually browse to the file:
<link rel="stylesheet" type="text/js" href="js/home.js" />
I then proceeded to take a 5 minute walk around the office and rethink my life decisions...5 -

We now have around 10cm snow and it make my way to college around 300% harder,
But I don't care, because this looks fucking beautiful.
Also, I can approve this famous saying about German trains,
"Caution! Doesn't work in case of:
Weather"1 -
>Wife texts me to buy her 10 oranges on the way home from work
>Arrive home with 2 oranges thanks to working with binary..
Believe it or not this actually happened after I had just finished a whole binary-related project over the span of around a month.6 -
OK morning rant from yesterday.
Get into the venue, connect my surface to the dock, keyboard won't work.
Try more USB ports, try another machine, keyboard (corsair k70) is totally broken.
Ugh.
Fine.
Disassemble keyboard, someone asks me a question, turn around and knock full coffee cup over my surface book.
Fuck sake.
Now I need a new laptop.4 -
Spend half the day setting up a dedicated server at work (including getting all the hardware together) and installing CentOS and tweaking around.
For a client? Oh no, there just literally wasn't anything else to do and I didn't want to sit around doing nothing or working on shell scripts AGAIN. (working in support (+ linux server management) and due to the holidays hardly any support requests come in)
*Hmmm, lets install nginx for fun*
"yum install ngi..."
*wait, let's compile from source and make it more fun!*
So yeah, that was my day, I guess.5 -
When you're waiting for your bus, veeeeery much in for coffee but you've gotta wait till you're at work and then you literally get 4 people around you drinking coffee and the smell is freaking 😍 but you can't get any at that moment.
This is torture 😭13 -
I worked on a company with an open floor plan where you would get a desk assigned depending on the type of project you worked on. All the desks were modular an you would get a desk with a cube with a set of drawers, or with a locker-like cube with a single space and door. When this guy started, he was assigned a drawer set. Around the third day he went around the office asking anyone with a locker to trade cubes. He finally got one. He filled it up with liquor bottles, cans of juice and several types of glasses. He would prepare himself cocktails during the work day. Once he was enjoying a Coca-Cola and whisky mix when the HR boss came around to ask what he was up. He offered the guy a drink.4

*sigh*
I got rejected today by a company I really wanted to work at. In my opinion the interview went great, but now I feel terrible and defeated.
I keep trying to keep a tough act around my girlfriend..but I feel like crying, so I decided to share this with you guys..12 -
So yeah, I got fed up with assholes offering unpaid internships while demanding the work of a paid employee and I went around reporting all of them for violating the law.
Hope it does something. I hate these people taking advantage of vulnerable post secondary students for their crappy, worthless startups.1 -
Looking around the directory, i noticed these log files.
He sure have a rough time testing it.
Apologies if my work station is running on Windows.8 -
There was once this customer, which wanted a project done. It was for around 2/3 weeks of work. The arranged cost was 500€, but when I said how long I'll need, he said:
No. I need it done in 5 days. Every day over, I deduct 50€ from the payment.
I was out of the building in less than a minute.
Fuck this type of customers.10 -
Got a call for work around 0100. Missed it. Got a call at 0530, got that one. Now handling the other call at 0700. I have a requirement to be on within 15 minutes. It's been 6 hours.21

MFW the company that have a turnover around $100 million via their woocommerce site only does'nt want to upgrade from PHP5.4 because "it is too much work".
Well fuck you then3 -
I'm alone in the office today and already done a lot of work. How can I be so much more productive when nobody is around.10
-
Just a 60 year old teachers desk and some awesome screens....MacBook pro with 3 external for work with a gaming rig when 5.30 rolls around....5
-
My current boss' boss. Dude has my back, no questions asked. If I mess up, he backs me up to the customer and then teaches me the right way behind the scenes. Even stands up for me when i'm not around.
He's helped me change my lifestyle, too, connecting me with trainers and coaches who can help develop a workout plan around my one hand. He understands the value of work/life balance, but has no power to change our schedule, so he helps out however he can around that.
He is honestly #bossgoals. I want to be like him when i'm a boss2 -
Got a job offer that’s ~€1000 more than i make now. But idk i care very much about the company i work at right now so I think I have to do the right thing for my colleagues ..
I’m starting in january, see you cunts and your pile of shit codebase around, i’m out 👋3 -
If you ever find yourself having serious problem with a bug... relax. Go take a walk around the block for 5-10 minutes, don't think about it, feel the sun on your face, look at girls/guys, whatever.
The answer will come to you automatically.
If that doesn't work, someone you know has adderal.2 -
Currently developing an android app that is a clone for an existing iOS app. Sadly all the PMs and POs (the P-M/O fraction) at this firm are somehow iPhone users.
So every time we implement stuff according to android guidelines some PMO comes around and asks: "why doesn't this look/work/smell like in iOS?"
Somedays I feel like crying...6 -
I hate this work from home shit with your family around. "You're always in front of the computer, go workout, go socialize, its family time"
What part of "work from home" you don't understand. SMH!9 -
when I finally get my code to work, no matter how small, I get up and walk around feeling like a boss4
-
Past few weeks, I have started to work late night and sleep whole day. I go to office at around 7pm and returns back next day 8-9am. I found it super productive.
But, my manager wasn't happy about it and now, she shifted daily scrum at 1 PM and emailed me to make sure I attend it daily.
Now, I have to fix my sleeping cycle... Nights are so great to work. Silent and nobody around.
Now, from tomorrow, I got a new challenge everyday to make it to scrum daily.6 -
Boss asked me to work the weekend today...
Told him I have to buy some shoes and do work around the house so I can't.
In reality I'll be doing a personal project and prettying up my CV ofcourse!
🖕🖕🖕🖕🖕
P.S. this is for a project he has had me rewrite 3 times so far.5 -
Being an introvert I don't like to show off but it's been around 7 months I am doing internship (3 so far) and didn't tell anyone about this.
In class every faculty thinks I am stupid because I spent more time in work rather than on my college materials. Due to which other guys get recognised who are good with college studies and I am always left behind.
I really hate this feeling when you work so hard and there is no one to tell about my achievements.7 -
On your first day of work, when you're being shown around, the employer always says, "We encourage our employees to think outside the box".
This statement usually coincides with them showing you your cubicle.2 -
Pretty simple oversight in a SQL pull led someone to run about 3,300 background checks that had already been run. Somebody told me we spend $25 per check, which would have totaled around $84,000. It ended up being much less, but for a good 40 minutes I assumed I'd be looking for other work the next day.1
-
Holy shit why can't you just work. Stop talking about your kids from 9 am to 5pm with the orther person sitting next to you who clearly wants to get some work done.
Also, good on you for baking a cake and your kid saying this is the best cake. Every kid says that to your parent.
FFS, shut up and work, and let people around you work.
P.S. I need good headphones, preferably in ear wireless buds. I'm waiting for Pixel Buda 2.17 -
Just moved to my own place, got more work done in 48hrs than I could've in a double that time with flatmates around. 💃👯
Now about that monitor setup...6 -
Buy a fitness tracker which reminds you after an hour of inactivity to get up.
Get up, walk around or even better climb some stairs, get back to work.3 -
Zoom: Don't worry everyone we'll deploy a work around to stop this venerability while keeping all the functionality in place.
Public: wouldn't it be safer to just remove some of these features? Someone will likely find another way around it.
Zoom: We feel comfortable with our decision and stand by our approach.
Apple: Fuck that - https://techcrunch.com/2019/07/...7 -
Honestly I don't mind ads, and I'm a fan of final fantasy but seriously this ad here pops up and fine with it but when the x button moves around the screen (Everytime it loads it's in different corners) AND it doesn't work I'm pissed!

Me on drugs at work: *focus as fck*
Me at work: shit, what the hell people around me talking about
Damn i love herb7 -
We started a project in January for which I was the sole developer, to automate tedious interaction with a vendor's ticketing system. We have a storage environment with about 400,000 commodity disks attached(for this vendor-- there are other vendors too), in sites around the US and Canada. With a weekly failure rate of about 0.0005%, that means about 200 disks a week need to be replaced.
This work-- hardware investigation through storage appliance frontends, internal ticket creation, external ticket creation, watching the external ticket for updates to include in our internal ticket --was all manual, and for around 200 issues a week, it was done by one guy for two years. He was hopelessly behind. This is all automated now, and this morning, I pushed this automation from dev/test to production.
It feels great to see your work helping people around you.8 -
I realized how overly complicated I wrote certain object oriented code a few months ago and now I have to work around it...
I over engineered it... I became the very developer I hate5 -
Sitting at work listening to music, doing absolutely fuck all right now because I ain't got no tickets! All the mfers need to answer me before I can work on their stuff.
Sounds great, no?
It's not. It's hell being unable to do work for me. I need to busy myself with doing random shit so I don't go insane.
Mhh, coffee...
Oh, by the way, Sir Jav'alot is still around too.11 -
Exploring my work machine today
- Nvidia control panel icon in the taskbar
Why is that there? *Click*
- No screens connected to an Nvidia device.
- Goes to system information
- GTX 1050
- Look around back, all of the displays are plugged into system video on the motherboard.
- Facepalm, plug into the GPU2 -
When the only way to work, is thru a client's laptop, and the client has to be around to use it... F*CK!11

!rant && questionTime
I can usually work these things out but if their are any Salesforce devs lingering around, is it worth investing time into becoming a certified dev for the platform?
A lot of companies seem to be migrating over so that would potentially set me up for greater role choices no?3 -
It fucking pisses me off when people compare experience as a benchmark of his performance or knowledge while hiring for job and even salaries depend on that. How do you know that, that guy has jerked around while the younger guy with less years of experienco would work better and harder.
What is your experience with people like that?10 -
Someone had a question on teams about a circular dependency warning they were getting. They found a work around that would allow it. Someone else responded with this2
-
Got my first serious project about a year ago. Made it clear to the client that we are developing a Windows app. After around 80-100 hours of work client just goes "how about we make this a web app?" Got a "financial support" instead of the agreed payment. Got around 4 times less money than agreed upon. They never ended up using some parts of the software (I ran the server so I knew that they weren't using it)
I once had a nightmare explaining to the client that he cannot use a 30+ MB image as his home page background. Average internet speed in my country is around 1-2 MB/s. I even had to do the calculation for him because he couldn't figure out the time it took for the visitor to load the image.3 -
People around me be like "Why you never take a break?? I see you work all the time. Doesn't your company offer you a paid holiday??"
Yeah they do offer a paid holiday, but even on holiday I still have to work because I'm the IT manager, full stack developer, database admin, helpdesk and everything that is related to IT.
:(26 -
While working on generic enterprise code: querying databases, calling third-party APIs and just passing data around, I'm thinking: "PLEASE LET ME DO SOME THINKING, LET ME WORK ON SOME HARD ALGORITHM OR SOMETHING!"
When finally working on 'some hard algorithm or something', I'm thinking: "ARGH! MY HEAD ACHES! GIVE ME RELEASE! LET ME WORK ON SOME MINDLESS ENTERPRISE CODE!"1 -
So rant-ish question:
Since not much is happening around here, can ya’ll open source devRant so community can work on it? Seems like a perfect candidate for open sourcing.
The users of this app are perfect working on the app as well.14 -
I need ideas.
What's the best use for several old, moderately crap laptops (<= 4GB RAM) I have lying around? I'm using one as a minecraft server because 3GB ram is enough and the Pi isn't, but past that, I'm pretty stuck. They all work, mostly, have CD drives and mostly free hard drives.24 -
Does music help you or does it distract you from coding?
It mostly distracts me, but sometimes helps me when I'm doing simple UI work etc. Or when I want to block normal people (even quietly) sitting or waddling around.10 -
Finally got around to updating the vanillia sleep screen to something more QA work flow base.

need to schedule a call with a guy from another branch at work. i tell him that because of the time zone shift, i can do earliest around noon his time (and that's being generous, thats really early for a dev my time)
and of course, what does he turn around and do? sends me a meeting for 3 AM...
🤡🤡🤡🤡🤡🤡🤡
i can't be the one with mental illness right?
perhaps the thing to do is just go around being so fucking ignorant you're just blissfully happy at all times6 -
Jeep Mechanic duh. Currently code for a living and work on Jeeps for a hobby. It would just be the other way around.4
-
WHY THE FUCK DOES AUTOCOMPLETE = "OFF" GET IGNORED 😡😡😡
managed to find a work around for the password field, but god forbid there's one for the username field 👿
I feel like I've tried everything google has to offer1 -
THIS FUCKING RECAPTCHA GEM! WHY THE FUCK MUST I DEBUG YOUR FUCKING PRODUCTION CODE AND WORK AROUND YOUR FUCKING BLUNDERS?
VERY LITTLE PISSES ME OFF MORE THAN SUFFERING FROM SOMEONE ELSE'S FUCKING STUPIDITY5 -
Someone please explain to me how you can become vice president of an internet company and have no fucking clue about simple database logic. Not only that, but then ask developers for query logic that is literally impossible and waste weeks fucking around trying to get it to work the way your deranged mind has shit out these absurd concepts.4

What I say:
Ah shit man! Spring break! Finally gonna be able to continue working on my personal project. Study, catch up with some books and tv shows while continuing to code!
What my wife hears:
Oh cool! Now I have someone to drive all around town getting me useless shit that I don't need while I am at work!!!

Work out the major requirements,
Identify platform(s) and environment best suited to project,
Design and develop around core features,
Allow 6-12 weeks for scope creep and the additional BS features,
Build, test and deploy in a week or two to meet unattainable deadlines.
Spend new couple of months refactoring and fixing everything. -
A guy came to me with a laptop that wouldn't boot. After some poking around, I opened the machine just to find everything submerged in coffee. No sh*t your computer doesn't work..3

I use a MacBook Pro at home and a Windows laptop at work. The trackpad on the Windows laptop is flaky, so I prefer to use it with an external mouse.
However, my desk at home is kind of glossy/reflective, so if I’m working at home on the Windows laptop and trying to use the mouse, it doesn’t work well at all.
Since I don’t actually have a mousepad (I only ever use the trackpad on the MacBook Pro), I started looking around the house for something I could use instead that would make the mouse work better. I needed something large, rectangular, non-reflective, heavy enough that it wouldn’t slide around the desk as I moved the mouse...5 -
I wonder how big is the github usage spike around the end of semesters cause us students are determine to fit a semester worth of work in the last week.1

I am .net developer which doesn't work with .net core(yet) and obviously i have windows as work os, while at home elementary OS is my main(again dual booting win10). I don't get why so many linux/windows rants are around. Get best of both worlds. I personally constantly need both and each are very different and better at handling different stuff, so why don't you (fanboys) stop it :)3
-
I wonder what the average age is of a ranter on devRant.
I just found out that some of the ranters I have seen around quite often are only around 18 (like I am).
Also I wonder what age people begin professionally programming since I have been working at a company since I was 16 and still work there. (I have programmed since I was around 8 so I already had a lot of experience.)33 -

Lovely and thankful clients do exist!
Last week the client of our last project came to my desk to shake my hand and thank me for my well done work. Keeping in mind that I'm a junior dev and our company has around 3000 employees I was really flattered :)1 -
Pending issues : 5. Deadline is nearing.
Tweaking around, I found some bugs on functionalities that for some reasons have magically passed QA. The bug was quite simple to be found.
Created 5 issues for 5 different bugs. Pending issues is now 10.
Manager : I am not happy. Last week we have 6 and we're going to weekend this week at 10?? Wtf you guys have been doing?? Why isn't there any progress?? Are you guys not doing any work?? You guys been lazy??!
Yeah, we been here sitting around play computer games all day. -
Just arrived in Sydney 2 days ago and reported for work yesterday. I looked at my laptop's clock and it said its 4:40pm. Cool! Another 20 min and I'm off.
I started fiddling around with my machine settings and noticed my Location setting is off. I switched it on. My time is updated to 2:43pm.

After I did some work on this nightmare codebase, the client kept switching goals. He Changed the task a few times, so I always told him that he will have to pay for all changes.
After a time he requested another change, so I stated that he has to pay the first invoice I sent him first. He started bitching around, that I didn't complete the work yet and so on. I saw where this was going. He didn't wanted to pay me, so I cancelled the work for this bitch.
😤

there has to be a special place in hell for people who don't set their mobile phones to vibration while in office.
no john, latest tv show theme song as ringtone is not going to make you cool. you are just disturbing others.
something i (we) don't have to face in remote work. multiple folks around my seat had their ringer on.9 -
left the office early today to see my 2 years old son before he goes to bed.
it's 11pm and I'm working from home, gonna wake up around 5:30am to commute to work.
I really need to move closer to work3 -
Me been in the company for almost more than a year now and still understanding the system.
Another developer, been here for around 4 months, and where ever I look, she will be contributing. Whether it's coding or resovling complex host issues. She works a lot.
I feel lucky to be able to work with her and also all other Devs in this team are awesome.
My motivational source and inspiration to work harder and contribute more and more to the team. -
I work for a media tech company and it's super fun. People around great taste in music and movies.
Meeting rooms are named are bands or movies. One is named as Shire, other as Asgard, and another one is Thanos, and many more.
And here's a special one :D
P.S.: will respond to all the previous posts, comments, and mentions soon.4 -
Monitored at work via Skype for business because a colleague deems conversations around ordering food for lunch is 'Personal and inappropriate use'.
Pathetic.
Seriously?8 -
I had to bite my tongue today when the MD and my colleague started to have a conversation about remote working "not working". It doesn't ******* work if you sit at your mom's kitchen table, cramped around "the team" while all using laptops without additional monitors.... yeah sure, my 3 monitors, large desk, peace and quiet and the ability to go to the bathroom without a security card "doesn't work" and is such a bad environment to get stuff done. Java teacher writes code on blackboard in comp lab
He tells us to try it out at our workstations.
We do. The code does work. We tell him.
He says: "There is something wrong with your compiler..."
Question is...we were around 30 students. Can all our compilers not work if we had used the lab before and the code we run worked clean??!?!?!?
We were flabbergasted2 -
I know I can't be the only one thinking safari is the new IE, like "it has to work on safari" makes me way more sad than "it has to work on edge"
IE is default unsupported in my company
This time around I figured out that fucking safari can't work properly with dates!
Like:
new Date("2019-05-16 11:00") // won't work
new Date("2019/05/06 11:00") // will work
new Date("16/05/2019 11:00") // won't work
new Date("11/05/2019 11:00") // will work, but it's November the 5th
Ok, the last 2 bugs are due to English&American who can't understand how dates work, but still... WHY IS SAFARI THE ONLY DIFFERENT ONE?8 -
Unpopular opinion:
Ubuntu is a dumb piece of shit with so many bugs lying around, especially when you try to get an alternative to Unity or Gnome.
Windows does have bugs too, but at least I don't run into six new bugs everyday which are so bad I can't even work.5 -
Mac suddenly stopped working. Came to know motherboard is gone & the price to get it changed is around 60k.
Fuck you Apple. Never buying the shit again. Though one good thing came out of it ;it used to be my work machine too & now I'm chilling from last 4 days.8 -
I need someone to make me a list of things I am not allowed to say and who I’m not allowed to say them to at work. This is getting ridiculous. Every time I turn around someone is making this face at me 😬 and saying “Don’t say that to that team” or “Don’t say that to this person”. I can’t do my work right if I have to keep censoring myself on everything people find organizationally sensitive.19

If I see one more Laravel dev I'mma commit a war crime
If I see one more Laravel dev dropping env(something) around the code I'mma commit _SEVERAL_ war crimes
Remember kids: you don't work with Laravel. If you do (you don't, but let's assume), ENV IS USED ONLY IN CONFIGURATION FILES, OR LARAVEL CACHING SYSTEM FUCKING BREAKS. Ok?11 -
My dev days consist on coding shit that I am really not interested in(web design)
What gets me through them is getting to my home office when I can continue to fuck around with Machine Learning, my guitar or the shit that does interest me....
.......also...listening to Nothing But Thieves is about the one thing that keeps me from losing my shit at work...5 -
So, I finally got a bicycle today. Time to start working on my health...
Am I the only one who's daily regime was:
1 - Go to work, sit around for 8 to 9 hours
2 - Come home, sit around for 8 to 9 hours
3 - Sleep for 8 hours
Goto 1?
I was surprised how the bikes these days are so incredibly light. I could lift it and keep it up no problem!10 -
Why do people eat at their work desk? This fuckety fuck is putting her sticky spoon in her mouth with some pungent shit in it. And its fucking my nose up.
They also make their workplace dirty with bits all around. You have a cafeteria for fucks sake. Get your lazy ass up there and eat.18 -
Quick question, how do you guys find the energy/motivation to create side projects?
Currently, I'm working around 8 hours a day and afterwards I can't really think about getting on the PC as I know that I will burn out eventually and end up messing up the following work day.
Do you take a shorter work day? Do you work on non IT related side-projects? Maybe someone wants to discuss on how to avoid burn-outs and still have fun while working and doing side-projects? :) All ideas are welcome for this topic!11 -
On Friday. Client and Project Managers arranged a meeting and wanted me to be there. Client said the meeting will be max 15 Minutes but it was around 2 hours. This client project was due the following week. I was happy because everything was done and excited that the client might be coming down to say how awesome the work was.
The table turned around. They came changed the designed and functionalities. The client said, it won't take long to do it, right? and my Project Manager said No! No! No! don't worry its very easy thing. It will take him around 1 day to do it, it's just all cosmetic changes.
It took me more than a week to get it done, test again, check on browsers. The client was pissed and they fired us. Guess who was blamed for it?1 -
Bring my stress ball to work.
It keeps rolling on the floor, so I have to chase it around.😿
How can you guys handle this bad boy -
My work gave me three laptops because not one of them can access all the resources I need. So I have to balance my workflow around these three machines.9
-
tell my boss on Friday that I'll work through the weekend to get done work done on some python code.
he doesn't give out vpn access so I can't use our company git so I put the project on a flash drive to work on.
come into work and I have an email. on Sunday he did everything I said I was doing (and had done) and then refactors the entire repo so even if he hadn't done the work, all of what I did became useless.
His way is the only way. but good luck getting him to tell you how he wants it. you just have to do a bunch of work only for him to tell you he doesn't like the way you did things and then he does it himself.
makes me realize why their other programmers didn't stick around. because they had to work so closely with this guy.
glad I started looking for other jobs sooner then later.1 -
@dfox I recently started playing around with Neo4j and find it really fun to work with. Would there be any way to get hold of parts of the devRant graph/graphs? Not private or secret stuff of course - only public parts of rants, tags and users. It would be fun to to play around with and analyze.13

Fartin' around with Godeps and having difficulties, but things aren't nearly as annoying when you are able to work from anywhere while drinking craft beer :^)

"Scientists discover the world that exists; engineers create the world that never was"
I've come to love this quote. We, the engineers, are shaping the world. We have the tools, knowhow and expertise to move mountains.
I said it before years ago and I'll say it again: all the other roles are meant to assist us, not the other way around. We don't work for managers, sales dept., bosses. They can't do shit without us. Why do we need them? To buy us toys, to sell our creations and suggest us how to shape our creations to make a better sell.
Quit slaving if you feel you are a professional. Quit bending over to sales' and mgmt nonsense timelines and demands. Hear them out, consider their concerns and give them YOUR estimates and approaches.
WE are the power of creation. THEY work for us. Not the other way around.
Does not apply to juniors. They are still learning their way around3 -
Told the client's graphic designer that I could integrate a mockup in a theme in around two days of work...
Received the template files and asks, sooo, the website will be up in two days ?
DUDE. NO.1 -
Got blames for 2 hours because our product went down.
Because the provider of license managment went down.
Well, now I put in place a "fuck you" work around. If licensing provider is down, people can still connect and use product (But not create new accounts).
So silly. -
When you're trying to solve a problem and you're spinning your head around then you check your phone and see the co-founder of a service you love just liked your rant.
You feel like: awee!! thank you 😍
Then you get back to work with some good portion of dopamine in your head to support you
Thanks again for this service 🙏1 -

So ironically after posting this rant this morning: https://devrant.com/rants/2376420/...
I came into work to an all hands meeting. Same situation that happened a year ago today is happening again with my current (now former) job. Being laid off effective immediately due to lack of funds.

In addition to my last rant.
"Warnings are made to be ignored. Just work around them." - my teacher
No i wasn't able to work around them as i wasn't even able to access my form designer (to add the requested textbox).4 -
😮
*doing my work silently*
*SUDDENLY THERE'S A FOSS, PPL RUN OUT THEIR HOUSES*
*still on the laptop*

*back on the work*
PS: anyways, anyone from around Tehran sensed any quakes?6 -
A couple times a week my girlfriend tells me that she leaves work. She travels with a motorised vehicle for about 45 minutes. I am responsible of cooking food on those days. The food preparation takes around 7 minutes of cutting vegetables and the cooking takes around 20 minutes. the current time of reading the message is 17:17. She had send the message at 17:08. At what time should I start making food in order to be finished at the time she gets home?
I start to relate more and more to school math questions...
Maybe I should make an app for this or website to calculate automatically.5 -
So I went to some meetup with my boss.
Suddenly some old friend of mine shows up, and we start talking..
- „Where do you work now?“
„$company in $city“
- „And.. Do you like it there?“
„Now way, I hate my job.. Too many idiots around!“
The thing is: My boss was right behind me all the time and heard everything..

When duel 24' monitors is not enough...
How does 3 work for you guys? Does your neck hurts moving around?
I had 5 at work but was mostly on 2 since other 3 for monitoring.10 -
Have a spare server at work doing nothing. Think to myself "I'll play around with kubernetes".
Step 1: install openshift (there's ansible, should just work...right?)
...
...
It's been three days and I am haven't started paying around with kubernetes yet. *Sigh*3 -
so…

Came into work with absolutely no sleep. And now after a couple of hours everything around the office looks weird like I've never noticed stuff before.
Or maybe I'm seeing things...
I fucking need sleep.1 -
Wanted to have Samsung Dex for work, so I can run office on it and kick windows from my dual boot laptop.
Dex pad was on sale.
Bought it.
Brought it to work.
Work monitor doesn't have hdmi.
...
fuck. <.<
I'll ask the technician later if he either has a monitor flying around he doesn't need or an adapter or something.1 -
Chasing fucking unicorns…
I want an F# job where I don’t have to deal with the M$ bs beyond dotnet.. no fucking M$ servers, no Win workstations, none of that bs that makes work uncomfortable.
Guess that ain’t happening.
Looks like I’m going to be stuck writing PHP for the dough indefinitely, and be content in playing around with greatness on my own time.7 -
Best career decision:
Doing many different jobs before programming, move to capital city to pursue first software development job without money, college degree, place to stay and plans for future.
Worst career choice:
Probably would be staying in Poland despite many opportunities to travel around the world, earn big money or work on really cool things as software developer but I won’t know until I die.2 -
When you have a great idea but work and other projects delay it... When you finally get around to it, someone seems to have had the same idea, at the same time, but actually made it happen!

Around 7 months ago,me and my friend started working for a startup as interns. it was work from home internship. they first told us to research about CDN and study about RESTapi. when we finished with that they told us to make a personal storage portal ( ) using CDNs which we did. After 3 month of work when we presented the same they then told us to scrap the project. what they wanted was cloud storage space which i am now implementing using amazon s3 FUCK THIS FUCKING STARTUP1

404, Swag not found 🥲
I got sick and tired of waiting (4 years) for the debugging ducks to be re-stocked in the swag store, so i made my own.
Yes, I’m a front end developer and the domain redirects to an Etsy shop because I’m too fucking busy carrying the entire company that i work for on my back to develop my own custom one.
I’ll get around to it once PMO/Design/Marketing ops and Business get around to doing their jobs themselves.10 -
https://hotpot.ai/art-maker
playing around with this is so captivating. that it doesn't really work well and you have to "optimize" your input makes it even more interesting. but when you use it too long, it starts messing with your brain and you start questioning your own perception of reality. what are "things" anyway xD
would be nice if dall-e 2 (which seems to actually work really well) was available to the public soon.. also, i want this for 3D structures, animations & games mechanics, imagine the fantastic uncanney valleys that would open up ^^4 -
Be exhausted in the middle of the day and almost fell asleep while being in the office. Be tired around 20, finally feel sleep after 2h and sleeping pills. Wake up at 3, struggle till 6 when you feel asleep again, at 8 alarm clock wakes you up telling you should be leaving for work :/
Reducing coffee intake was a horrible idea.4 -
I've got a mate at my current work. Most of what we do is insult each other, but there's a real respect there. We were both in similar positions in the company, where we were overworked, underpaid, undervalued and pretty unhappy. He was so helpful when it came to traversing the politics of the company, and how to work out what to do. Plus we get really drunk together all the time. I'm leaving my present company in a few weeks and I'll probably miss having him around the most.

I suddenly just want to retire.... Job just feels like never ending work.... Can't find time for a break... And well biggest fear in taking a vacation is the amount of work that piles up while I'm gone...
Maybe I suddenly just have burn out... But suddenly just going ah fck... What's the point of all this....
Sometimes wonder, if I didn't have parents around would I just quit and and just do whatever I want until I run out of money...
How many years that would take....10 -
Have you ever got a situation that while working on a CMS (like this Drupal piece of shit), you wake some JavaScript code up?
Lead dev : "Yeah the zoom doesn't work anymore, go and debug it"
Me : "k I'm on it"
*Opens file, start to put 3 or 4 console.log() around to see where things start to break
*it breaks since the beginning why not*
*Starts to play around with variables*
*Result are 'normal'*
*Change edited line to what it was before*
*Code works fine*
*What the hell*
*Git revert /js/script.js*
*Empties cache*
*Code works as it was supposed to do before*
I swear to god I work here since January, this is the 3rd time it happens. Now I'm sure the project has a soul since it stole it from the developers that worked on it before me1 -
So I've spent the past 2 months or so integrating a payments provider with a terrible API, only to find that the provider is missing a core feature that they claimed to have in their sales pitch. I have no idea what will become of a large part of my work, it's so draining to work around a total garbage API6
-
Friend from a company I did an integration delivery with sent me this lovely slack discouse. I had no idea their HR lady let her freak flag fly at work 😏
Wonder how many years she's been casually tossing that one around.3 -
I work in tech support right now... 80% of my job is waiting around for presenters to show up to events and end up not wanting any tech.

Wife free from work this weekend
Made a rather large project with Pharo and Seaside to see if I dig it(i did, but it ain't replacing my other tools anytime soon, shit requires reading far too much code and digging around dark corners of the net for it)
Finished 2 projects for work and got ahead of 2 others for this week.
Shit b, this is one interesting weekend indeed.

Got up to present my capstone project. Here's what it is about, heres how it works, here's a work around for an issue I couldn't figure out, etc... Everything went smooth until I was asked what the name of my project was. Fifteen weeks of development and I never came up with a name.

I am so sad. I've been having problems with Linux installs on my desktop since i built it. It just hangs at random times and the journals don't mention any problems. I finally catch a lead and it turns out it's a bug with the microcode of the Ryzen processors. There was a possible work around, but it didn't work for me.
Guess I'm just going to have to use Windows exclusively on my desktop. I hope for a fix but the bug has been around for a year. :(4 -
Fuck Emby and their decision to go proprietary. A lot of good folks worked their asses off helping make Emby what it is today and they turn around and fuck the open source community.
I'm glad Jellyfin decided to fork them and continue the work there.
LukePulverenti you can go fuck yourself!1 -
I use to work with a lot of people from all around the world, so i can say from the very first meeting if you are a good dev or not, and darn ! i hate the self confident devs who think they are the best, especially when they are junior !
I want to tell them : WAKE UP ! YOU ARE NOT THE ONLY ONE IN THE WORLD !!7 -
Won 2 tickets to a dev convention with some interesting talks...
Nobody at work wants to come along...
I think ill just take that day and hang around the city.6 -
Came back to work while being sick due to lack of sickdays. I'm near comatose from headache and coughing going zombie around the office.
PM: How you doing?
Me: Underpaid, overworked and sick. Can't do shit about the latter.1 -
So after school i was kinda roaming around, taking the odd paid programming job for clients, not really making any money, but also quite struggling because I was walking around with undiagnosed ADHD, for about the last 2ish years, not really making any money.
Since this February friends told me I might have ADHD, so I had it checked. Turns out I have been walking around with severe ADHD all my life :P That explained a fuckload... and now I got medication that works, yay!
Flash forward to 3 weeks ago, still not doing any work, all of sudden I get poked on linkedIn "hey we need a developer, wanna work for us?"
I wasnt really looking and since it was a message on linkedIn I figured it was just another of those overpromising recruiters, but it was very close to where I live so I decided to call them directly to check it out, expecting literally nothing, nor was I looking for work.
Roughly a week after that call I got a job as team lead backend developer...
Wait I was a total mess in the last 2 years, how did I end up as lead over an intern and 2 contracted freelancers?!?! HOW DID THAT HAPPEN!?
Sofar I am enjoying it.1 -
Coworker and dev lead had a discussion about newsletter implementation last friday.
I told them, i’ve tried the setup before, it’s not gonna work, it’s behind an ip-block and they need a backend person.
Lead was convinced it was possible and started drawing stuff.
End result: wasn’t possible.
People really need to start listening around here... -
Realising that group projects meant the best member of the team does all the work and the rest just sit around back seat driving 😅2
-
That moment when you solve an issue that you had a super hacky work around for the last 2 months, but the proper way. It's like crack.1
-
What you sitting around on devrant for. Dont you have work to do?
Compiling..
Oh ok, carry on then :)3 -
I pretty much leave important tough and challenging dev work for the weekend, I start my weekend days around 9AM and interact with no one until 4PM, after that I just go back to life lol
During the week if I'm not doing anything I play around with my projects else I go out with friends. -
Question Time.
Has anyone around here used Krita before?
https://krita.org/en/#
Im trying to find something Photoshop-like that isn't GIMP - i've never really liked it for what ever reason.
i dont do design work enough to pay Adobe's BS subscription, but something opensource / donationware would be more appealing.6 -
Flash back to when The old mouses had the trackballs in them, pulled the mouse apart and pulled the trackball out 🙃
Coming back to recent times, myself and a work mate printed off small troll faces and stuck them to the bottom of the laser mouses around the office huehue1 -
How do you deal with having too much work on your back but still wanting to help people around you, because you know they are good people and trying their best but they also have too much work to do?5
-
So I was messing around in unity, as you do. And I made an explosion mechanic platformer. The scripts were all working well. I saved it for the day.
The next day I booted unity and my scripts were gone, and the scene switcher won't work.
So I mean, partly my fault. Partly google drive's fault and partly unity's fault.6 -
Anyone just have like a weekend where they stay up really late doing nerdy things or work on their personal projects? I sometimes find myself on certain weekends that I just work on a bunch of personal code, websites, or even if it is changing my accounts around.5
-
* Customer reports bug.
* I fix the bug.
* This highlights another issue that I haven't got enough resources to fix.
* I revert the fix.
* <insert hacky workaround here>
We have code that invokes undefined behaviour (freeing memory twice), but somehow people have managed to build around it and now it depends upon it to work.

Might as well start off with the weekly event!
My favourite famous programmer I reckon is Sir Tim Berners-Lee, because without the work of him and his colleagues at CERN, we'd probably be struggling to talk about our favourite programmers with other people around the world - we might even still be dialing into Minitel and BBSes -
What things do people around you keep repeating related to programming?
For me it is surely "linux is soooo permissive", which is true but still funny when people start saying it unrelated and simply as a mean to jokingly explain why something doesn't work how is supposed to. Even if the problem is not even on a computer4 -
Developer annoyance number two: fixing or having to work with or around other people's crappy code with days-long headaches following.
-
I hate mondays. Everyone in the company is in a bad mood, nobody wants to work and the clients are annoying. Mondays should be abolished.
No one asks us developers about our mood and that we spent the weekend working instead of lazing around and having a party.
I have decided to avoid contact with clients and companies on Monday.1 -
Cheated with my beloved 'optimization' to make a go around that fucking bug and then the temporary work around turned out to be nice feature. Great!! 😑 But I am not happy :( fml1

The most work hours in a row n a non-dev job were 14 hours, but they were the hardest.
During University I worked in a warehouse once a week. It wasn't that bad and I could rest my brain for 8 hours. But around Christmas time they wanted me to do some extra work (as well as everybody else there). So I had to carry 20kg packages for 14 hours. Three days in a row from 7am to 9pm. I had two travel two hours to work and home again, so I had to get up around 4:30am and went to sleep at midnight. I'm so glad it was only a student job and I don't have to do this in my current job. And I feel sorry for all those warehouse workers, who had to do this regularly.1 -
Got a text from the bank that my salary is credited in my account on my way to work.
Can I turn around and head back home now? -
You ever just get constantly shit on by life, work, and everything for weeks and then, one day, it finally just turns around for the better. After that, you finally feel normal again. Probably all the Christmas cookies I’ve been eating… In the words of forest gump, “I’m so happy I could bust!”9
-
My gf wants to be a nomad.
I just like to code in my chosen place of work (home) and not lose focus with moving around.
I'm worried, I get anxiety if I don't find myself in places that let me be productive. I'm very much like a cat in that regard 🐈7 -
I am evolving as a Software Enginner by doing the work of the other people around me that don't do shit.
-
Am I the only one who needs to get in the zone to program efficiently? I need to listen to some rock / metal and be in my trousers at around midnight, then I can program for 6 hours straight without standing up. I feel like I need to stand up and walk every 30 minutes at work 😅1
-
Kinda funny, the company I work for, has around 1k followers on linkedIn. The only interactions it has on any posts is either from 1 or 2 sales people & 2 founders. Any poll they do on Linkedin has maximum 3 votes3

Working on a project in which the work is planned around what I'm already good at, isn't much use.
Yes, the person who is paying for the project, would want only someone with experience (good experience) to work on the project.
But really I'd like to work on stuff which will be challenging (in terms of learning new stuff). So yes, I'd like to get paid for learning! -
Picking up the work on an existing Wordpress site.
When a non-tech person started a WP page and you as a software engineer should "improve it a little bit, since [the client] already did most of the work"...
By now - unless I really cannot get around it - I refuse to start working extensively on existing wordpress sites. -
So I'm in a sort of predicament, I love the environment of the office that I work in, the freedom and I get along with pretty much everyone.
The only down side is that I can't see a whole lot of development in my coding ability, a lot of the people around me are more junior than I am and I'm so used to being around friends in college that knew a lot more than me that I could bounce ideas around with, don't get me wrong I can and have learned a lot on my own but it's just nice to be around people that know more than I do.
Has anyone else been in or is in a similar situation and does anyone have any advice on what to do about it?2 -
This weekend, I bought a mechanical keyboard to use at work. I'm worried the clicking sound will bother my co-workers around me. Does anybody know if bringing the keyboard to work will make people hate me?
It's a Logitech G610 with Cherry MX Red switches. I ordered some rubber o-rings on Amazon to dampen the keys. They should be coming in tomorrow. Should I risk bringing the keyboard into work before I dampen the keys?7 -
Feel utterly deflated today. Working with an API that gives no feedback what so ever. Going around in circles and making little progress. What’s worse is we quoted 1 days work.
With all my experience I should be better!2 -
Last week i had a talk with my boss. Actually he more had a talk with me. Why i wasn’t able to finish my work the sprint before. I told him i had to run not one, but two project at the same time and on top of that had to show a new coworker around.
Some how i keep thinking about quitting this shit.1 -
"The advice I like to give young artists, or really anybody who'll listen to me, is not to wait around for inspiration. Inspiration is for amateurs; the rest of us just show up and get to work. ... All the best ideas come out of the process; they come out of the work itself."
--Chuck Close
Motivation, inspiration... works for either.1 -
Due to non work related shit I'm struggling to focus, I can still wrap my head around programming (even if with significant struggle) but I cannot keep up with cloud/containers/microservices/cool new tech of the day2
-
Oh, you've found a work around for your browser caching? No problem, here's DNS caching so you can fuck with your code again... and not know what the issue is
~ Sincerely, ISP4 -
for the last 6 consecutive Wednesdays, I've gotten some form of an email stating "sorry, venue super swamped, we definite want to find a way to work with you. we're still is talks with other developers, but we really like your knowledge of the project and want to work with you in some capacity". The only stated reason for not going with me in the first place was I told them the project would take 8-12 weeks, but they needed it turned around in 10 weeks max.... you do the math...1
-
Who else around here just realizes he spent more time debugging other people's shit than actually developing in a year of work, and thinks that this shouldn't be allowed?
(cf my last rant) -
IT's going around making sure everyone is able to work from home. It's gonna be like the shining at my house by the time the situation is over. I like having wfh as an option but 100% is gonna do my head in3

This Collab thing is so interesting. I have come back to devRant after a long time and its so very nice to see some insane ideas floating around here. This app is not only about Rants now it is a world of its own. Great work David !!4

The moment when you work your ass off on a project and you don't get alot of praise
vs
The praise you get for that 5 minute side project / fuck around you done....
Wtf!? -
mess around inside bootstrap.css project at work, make a push, sit back with my popcorn n watch the world burn2

So one day i see someone in my office walking around with devrant sticker on their laptop.
Now most of my actual work related rants don't see the darkness of the feed because they had personally identifiable information. I write in draft, read and delete😶2 -
I've been drunk quite a lot lately, yet i'm not tryna forget or quit anything. Am i getting alcoholic ? This create a lot of bad situation going around my life, sleep deprivation, health problem, etc..
Am i thinking my work and my company to seriously? Last time i work too hard, i got hospitalized for exhaustion. My brain can't stop thinking, always getting left and right, here and there. Am i getting crazy?13 -
Done nothing today...
And when I say that I don't mean "I did no work because I've been screwing around doing xyz"
There are things where info from other people is a blocker but still, I'm sitting here at 13:00 going "Where did the time go?!" -
*writes function*
*doesn't work*
*adds more shit to function*
*now can't think of what more you would need to add for it to work*
*changes random signs around for 30 minutes*4 -
Not training properly in the first 7 years of my programming career, which is theselast 7 years 😓
As a result, I have to re-do a big part of my work because I don't trust my older self around computers.3 -
Honestly, people who think “vanillaJS da way” and heavily work with HTML strings are a danger to human kind.
You’re basically running around with a shirt saying “I love using eval wherever possible”2 -
So the other day I kept seeing too many of "if it fits, it sits" jokes. It was one of the days I was messing around with my app. So I did something to make it work. I didn't know what and I went "If it works, it twerks". I know it's stupid but I crack myself up every time I say it. 😂

Spent 4 hours trying to make a query work and failed miserably.
Turns out I was using inverted commas around the value.
What the ....1 -
It's difficult to turn off the brain after a full day of work... you can't sleep 'cos the ideas must be purged or else they will rattle around all night... so you log on remotely just to get it down but proceed to (accidentally) work another nine hours... you finish with only enough time for two hours sleep before you'll need to get up for work again.
-
at the co-working space where I work today there was an argument between the CEO of this startup and their developer.
not really sure what it was about but at the end the developer was getting really frustrated and he shouted: "I'm telling you REST means HTTP!!".
I think all the developers around vomited on their keyboard.2 -
I accidentally payed around EUR14 from the train station close to my home, to the station close to work. It's one fricking station from my home to work, or a half hour walk.

When we did a chatbot in my computer science lesson and seeing all the different attempts at it to work around problems1

On a business trip. I brought my work laptop and my personal laptop with me. Because I am smart. But a lot of my coworkers only bring their work laptops. So I guess I am basically wondering how much porn has tainted the work laptops. Especially since they will auction them off around once a year. To be clear I am not wondering about the software taint.2

Im trying to learn vim in my spare time. Obviously, I am fumbling around and am nowhere near as productive coding than in the IDEs im used to.
For you vim masters put there, how long do you think it will be before I would be productive enough to use it as my main editor, assuming primarily learning in my free time outside of work?6 -
I go around the office judging other people's work in my mind. Then I go back to solving the problem with a renewed sense of self worth. haha

Just learnt something from reddit. The bio/data folks I work with are HARKers, they mess around blindly till they find something that kinda works then make up some bullshit to justify their approach and pretend they knew what they were doing all along.
https://reddit.com/r/...4 -
You know that moment when you are siting in train or bus and around you there are old people but you have work on laptop so you open it but then their eyes stick up on that strange thing on your knees and you feel like human from future xD2

Just chanced upon CraftCMS at work--used it for a small side project. Have been playing around with it, and am amazed and impressed with its ease of use. Think it would be my go-to CMS solution for future website projects.
Anyone else tried it? Used it for a production-ready project? Think it could replace Wordpress?1 -
I hate Microsoft.
I got my new laptop from work today. Pretty nice, 4 cores, 8 threads, an SSD.
It also came with the upgrade to Windows 10.
I work quite a lot on virtual machines, so my work laptop ends being an email and RDP client.
So, I connect to my usual VM, open up vscode and begin working.
But I quickly realize, that for some reason I can't do the Ctrl+Alt+DownArrow combination anymore, even though it worked on my old win7 machine.
Turns out that these keys are reserved, and I have absolutely no way to work around this.
I have to stop using a keyboard shortcut, that I use every few minutes.
Thanks for nothing.17 -
A typical (Covid) day (for me) being self employed. I tend to start working at around 8am, only break to make coffee, and by 3:30 in the afternoon I fall asleep til 5pm. Then I get some food, play my bass, mess around in garage band, drink a bottle of wine, watch some crap movie, go to bed around 1:00am rinse and repeat. I never work weekends anymore. Interested to know your Covid day,.5

attempt neater/cleaner implementation, doesn't work
attempt ugly implementation, it works
maybe one day i'll learn how to write good typescript and react
easier to throw the args around than try to figure out the correct syntax to pass a function to a child component, or not have a react hook closest to where it gets used? -
Finally got around to some real video encoding work on my new computer but noticing it's not blazing fast...
And more work is still handled by the CPU... But I thought video processing is handled by the GPU, which seems to be barely used at all. I'm using Handbrake but I thought the whole point of dedicated GPU was for intensive graphics and video processing?6 -
Now that I got some time off work, I'd love to dig deeper into programming, are there any new trends around?8
-
I hate weekly demos. Why not wait until something is done and ready to show, and then schedule a show an tell?
Otherwise you're just racing around to get some half-ass, not working rubbish in to make things look good. Yet it probably doesn't work at all, and is filled with technical debt that will make it to production.4 -
I work with a lot of people around the world, since 2 years ago almost.
My english is really BAD and I dont understand why is too difficult to my improve it.
Is very difficult to my write, speak and listen in english.
I really have a problem?? My mind comes white when I am in a meeting in english. I feel like a durp turtle...8 -
Little calculation:
you have probably around 20 days holiday per year.
After 60 year old everything is more or less a gift, so I wouldn't count on it.
Let's say you are going to work 30 years. That is 600 days to do whatever you want.
It's less than 2 years.
Shit.
Try to count how many days left of freedom.
Shit.
Suddenly all the things I have to work on today have lost all priority6 -
The new project I've been assigned to at work is using flex-box. I've always heard such great things but not had the chance/got around to trying it.
So far I absolutely hate it. Anyone else?7 -
Playing around with a POC I'm doing for work, and it works so well I got an IP ban from one of my favorite websites for a massive amount of requests they got from me

I actually hate to work when there are kids around.
I get so unfocused when they run amok and shout around that I put points in front of my class names in DOM elements.
<div class=".fuggin-hell">
OF COURSE MY SELECTOR WON'T FIND IT!
Yet another reason to not be a parent, I guess.5 -
Today a colleague copy pasted the question from stack overflow in his code, wondering for half an hour why it didn't work. It was quite amusing to be honest seeing him rant around knowing what he did
-
It's a challenge working with people that aren't as competent as yourself. Having another programmer misunderstand some system's design and throw copypasta around; or an artist who wants to chime in on low-level system design. It's hard to communicate not only how things work, but that a person should stick to their designated role and competency - without bruising egos.3

I have zero knowledge with Android development. I started to mess around with react Native these days. And so much time on configuring the environment of everything... Emulator, SDK, ADV... Still doesn't work... Spending hours and days waiting for a miracle. And then the emulator launched. Thanks God.7

Special work area meeting. Partners from around the globe came in. Call in or you flew in. Close enough, have to attend in person. Hundreds of people there. Starts at 9, broke at noon, picked back up at 1, ended at 6. Focus? Improving sales. About 98% of the people there did not make sales. About 70% did not work on bids and proposals. It was extremely painful and boring. And my project manager didn't know why we were so upset the next day. It had been extremely "informative" to her.1

Ok so another short rant about project I ranted before. We are developing Android and iOS social app for around 6 months, apps should have been in store during September . Turns out sometimes during August Apple decided that all apps of appstore that communicate with server have to implement ipv6 also Amazon had support ipv6 on its old ec-classic instances but not on new ec-vpc instances. I have worked until middle of the night trying to find work around for this but at the end we need to find another host that supports ipv65

Not so much learn to program, as learn to program in a new language:
As an intern I continually have people around me asking favours in the IT company I work for.
One day the lead of marketing comes in saying our website isn't responsive. She asked if I could work with html, CSS etc. to fix it... And offered me an entire pizza if I could get it done by the next day.
Needless to say, I now have a free pizza waiting for me. -
I work with UK devs and them calling every little fix "win" makes me cringe ngl.
"Oh I fixed that issue yesterday. That's a small win".
Cringe all around.15 -
Work day 3 of 2023… gawrram I’m bored. Another day of IaC. Unfortunately the issues I’ve dealt with today are sequential from the QA point of view. And our QA is slow us fuck today. So a lot of waiting around for me today. I’m one fucking issue away from the Great Infrastructure Update. So close, yet so far, knowing how slow our QA process is…
So here I’m sitting around in my office away from office pondering what the hell I should do with all this time…2 -
I spent 3 days trying to do some azure devops work. Finally resolved to contacting support and their engineers resolved my issue in literally less than 15 mins.
This is a Microsoft support appréciation post. Twice they have saved me in mins after days of fumbling around and over engineering my ass off.2 -

Who here uses mechanical keyboards at work?
I have an old razor at home with Cherry MX Blue switches, very noisy so definitly not suited when around co-workers.
Any recomendations on silent boards suitable for office life? I've looked at the Logitech g413 with romer-g switches but I am unsure if these are pleasant to work with.
I am also considering POK3R, Ducky One or WASD with Cherry MX Brown switches specifically for office. Would like to hear experiences from fellow devs who prefer mechanical keyboards and use them around co-workers.2 -
I need a new laptop. Fucking 8gigs of ram aren't enough for anything these days.
Today at work I had 4 gig of swap allocated...
Any recommendations whether to buy ryzen mobile or IntelU. I want an ultrabook because I move around quite a lot.3 -
SSMS dark theme - That is not a 12 step fucking program. ...That'd be great.
I fucked around forever with changing every little thing but it gets quirky after a while. Highlighting for one...
Can't the SSMS team have a fucking lunch with the VS team and work out some minimal arrangement?7 -

Since I'm a front-end developer I've been working on PHP quite a lot lately, not only for front-end but also for back-end stuff, data conversion and image manipulation.
I've found that it's quite pleasant to work with thanks to the tons of documentation around and how straightforward it is.
I don't get how much hate it gets but I assume it's because I'm only starting to work with but damn, you could even build a car with it!1 -
Be honest. Given that you're not in crunch mode. Do you actually work 8 hours every day?
I have had some days but usually it's impossible for me to do actual work as a developer for 8 full hours, 5 times a week.
I feel that (without meetings), my ideal schedule for days of normal workload would be 5 hours a day. I'm strictly speaking about focused work, actual programming. Meetings don't usually rack up more than 2-3 hours per week for me.
I do my best to be in the office during the expected hours but I can't help but feel that everything about my engagement, focus and contribution at work would be better if I could just stroll in around 10, well rested, do some actual work, take a short lunch break, go at it again and go home around 15:30...
Because I feel like this I quickly get judgemental about myself if I come in at 9 and leave around 16:30 too often during a work week.
What are your thoughts on this subject?3 -
Having worked for this company for around 5 months remotely,I still don't understand how how things works here..when to consult and when not to.. everyone am supposed to work with seems bussy with other staffs and keeps on postponing the meeting to discuss issues..I barely cannot withstand4

Oh god that feeling when you get a complicated process to work the way you want it too. It is especially good due to the fact that it has been a psychological barrier in this project for a while.
I may walked around the house fist bumping the roof for a bit. -
If I am asked to work on something I don't know then I get into the zone and don't give a fuck about anyone or anything around. If it's something I am familiar with my mind starts to wander and time literally stops. Damn....1
-
So, Our company called us back to office after 8 month.. and reason was our boss is giving.. You guys may be work on bed.. It is bad for your back.. Here we will provide you better working enviornment and please do carry your laptop to office :P
But I think its okay to work from office.. Once I was excited to work from home. But dude you can learn from the person sitting next to you, discuss things around,, can see what others are doing.. Its a progress. At home you are just u and laptop :)
Personally I think its better to work under someone superior obvious he/she should be technical and egoless.. then its more fun.3 -
"I'll make a library out of this part of code, so it'll be portable! But another day, I have to make the whole thing work first"

"Alright, why are there 4 different versions of this class lying around?" -
Just spent 1 week following the upgrade tutorial from one framework to the next. Using their upgrade tool and following the documentation.
Finally finish the work, most things are working it just doesn't seem to work quite right. Must have missed something.
After some digging it turns out they completely removed a function that I rely heavily upon. No mention in the upgrade document, no possible work around. Every forum post about it either has no replies or it says "it's a new feature".
Well fuck you.
The whole project is now useless.
Fml 😭4 -
This week, the only team members working is our Team Lead and Project Manager. While I respect what they do I can't help wondering what the heck they are being paid to work on while no one else is around.5

Is anyone around experienced with SDR, especially the HackRF?
I am trying to send OOK data at a certain frequency but it doesn't work. I am basically recording the wave, then using ooktools to decode the wave to binary and the hackrf_ook to send the binary. It doesn't work...
Using GNURadio for replay attacks works great, since I am not testing it on a rolling code device.
Has anyone managed to transmit binary (or hex) with the HackRF or any other SDR as a matter of fact? I cant use rfcat with the HackRF. -
"Longest you worked without rest + why?"
Maybe around 7hrs or so? It may not be much, but the thing is that I had to work almost the whole night through.
I was about to show off a game at the school festival, and I had to finish multiple playable stages while not having a dedicated stage editor application; I was using Notepad as the stage builder. I had to work through the night before the event.
Ended up catching the flu after the event, but I don't regret it.1 -
Started messing around a bit with @LucaScorpion JavaRant API thinking I might make a command line app. Well I have about 50 lines of code later and it's working to get a random rant and all the comments. The trouble is now instead of working on it I'm just back to reading rants... No way I'll ever be able to work on this without getting distracted.2

Upgrade some spring.jar files as per ticket.
Bumble fuck cargo program your way into getting the project to be runnable again after fucking with gradle.properties and build.gradle.
Find out that shit doesn't work and now you gotta dug around to see where the fuck logs might be.
Thanks for providing no stack trace or useful information to help me debug spring.2 -
One of our frontend developers was legally blind and was responsible for design.
He did leave his company around 3 years ago but the company was happy with him & his work. What a weird combo :D3 -
Man, I fucking hate browsers. Some of them move at a snails pace when it comes to APIs, and polyfills and bloated frameworks pop up to work around it.
I know it's pretty much impossible, but get together and actually implement the features you're missing from each other, fuck. -
Could someone explain to this old fart what the kiki and bouba thing I keep seeing around the place is all about? Is it something to do with Köhler's work, or just something the urban dictionary hasn't yet catalogued?5

Waiting for the other half to finish work so I'm stuck sitting around drinking... Without my laptop to keep writing or programming, this is truly the saddest day of my life...1

Summer is getting close, so you see highly stilished people running around taking pictures of themselves.
Are they wannabe influencers or applying to work at a high class escort service?5 -
I've been trying to do a programming assignment for such a long time and I can't get my head around it. It's not even that big but I've spent hours trying to understand and make it work. Times like these make you feel so helpless. :/2

XHTML, I had to work on an old project that was developed around it with IE 11 in mind, many bullshit limitations where a hassle, from all the tech, HTML, CSS and JavaScript. Developing with workarounds was the norm. Never gonna develop with it.

I went remote a year ago and have had the constraint fear of losing my job, even though I know for a fact that there are other devs who do less work than me and slump around more than me. Never want to go back to office life again though.1

How long did it take y'all to get your head around the product you work on?
Asking because I've been at my current job for 7 months and I still find myself surprised on a daily basis and feeling like "wow that's basic, how have I not picked that up yet?"14 -
Felt a knot in my shoulder while training BJJ. It slowly got worse and had to stop training.
By the next day it feels like my back is out but in my neck. It's miserable.
I was supposed to do work around the house but that isn't happening now for sure.6 -
Our clients VM is so slow it is trying to give me schizophrenia. Any way I can get around it and work on my company laptop itself?1

1. Like solving and exploring how things are made/done, I want challenges

Around 24 hours. Over 48 hours!
It's was in high school, I had a job in grocery store stucking up shelfs. I had two shifts that weekend. it's was Saturday I had just finished working a 13 hours shifts and my mates was pressuring me to join for video games and drinking.
Ofc I went there, got super drunk (beer pong and drinking league of legends).
It got really late(around 4am) and I knew I was supposed to be at work at 6 pm, so I call dad told him to drive me home and then to work! He did as awesome as he is!
Had to work 12 hours, I did 11 hours then my boss send me home.I was basically til at bit drink then I arrived I work for 4 hours I had the worst hangover the last 7 hours of work.
When I came we had guest and I had to be present!
Poor life decision, no regrets! -
This might be a highly specific mistake but, never ever uninstall the ms-office package installed on your work pc, linked to your corporate ms account. And then try to install another version from an installer you have lying around. Internal Support Team wasn't happy. 😅

Work for the Best company for all around world on it’s field. Do your job well and get promotion. Then earn less somehow because of some reasons that involves out of your control. Welcome to my story :)

The first time was the time my father bought a pc for his work,I was around 5,I didn't know anything about computers back then,I just wanted to change things and see what happens! The first time I actually understood what devs do was the first year of high school when I started to learn C++ :))

Today. Today was my worst meeting. We had to meet to work on our website together. I said I couldn't make it, because I have other important things to do besides the website and we still have plenty of time to work on the damn thing. "You can't f'ing skip meetings." "I know you have other things, but you made a commitment." Right. But you can decide when to have f'ing meetings based around your schedule.1

Somethings I just want to throw my pc around the office because those f*cking unit tests that don't want to work😤🤬😡

Now due to march ending is around the corner, manager will frustrate and put employee on the edge of chair and doing shitty work just because illiteracy of boss. Literally hated this part of work.
-
I've had it with discords interaction API. The docs are vague and cryptic at crucial times and overall it sucks balls. I've been trying to build a framework for myself around this, but this shit is impossible to do without hacks or inconvenient at best to work around and the worst part is that the discord quality assertion or anyone trying to bring some quality back into this mess has left a long time, so it will stay like that for an even longer time. FUCKKK!

Who has/had a colleague who after discussing an idea in a meeting will go :
'I just think of @insert_previously_mentionned_idea'
Like wtf... Didn't you hear me explaining the hole idea ?
Everyday I work my ass off to help the company forward and everytime he manages to turn things around like it was all his idea and he came up with it.3 -
PHP is like the black sheep on every family tree. Lots of work revolves around him. It's prone to failure, break up easily, does things in an inefficient manner, and gets all kind of disease. So I'm using other family memebers, C++ and Go, to keep him on track.8
-
you either get unreadable rust code or 7 layers of misdirection so that the compiler can work around keeping track of lifetimes
I mean maybe I'm too opinionated about readability. technically the computer can read it so people should just get good I guess -
When you're just waiting around for the designer to finish their audit of your build so you can get back to work.

Question about hourly rates.
As remote EU based senior frontend dev (I do android native) how decent is 45usd/hour rate?
This is what a US based company is offering me. Im freelancing currently in a local agency and Im getting same hourly rate locally.
I work under an individual business licence which means I will be paying around 18 percent of taxes.3 -

spent all fucking day fucking around with my server. installed gitlab to mydynamicdns.service.com/gitlab. but, gitlab still handles requests at mydynamicdns.service.com/ but it's just a 404. couldn't figure out how to host anything else. fucked around with it for like 5 hours, tried installing some shit called passenger, but by that point, I had already fucked up my environment pretty good so that didn't work at all. spent like 3 more hours fucking with it.
fuck it. time to learn about virtualization. someone here suggested Proxmox. how exactly does it work? is it running a fully blown vm for each server or is it running something like docker under the hood? and does each server then have it's own IP address? -
About to tell the boss I can spend more time tracking my time and moving tasks around in the latest of the project management softwares I’ve had to use here, or I can do the actual work. Not both.

How to deal with having to work on a very boring task?
I work as android dev in a company where there are around 40 of android devs in total. When I was working on frontend architecture and UI related tasks everything was perfect and I loved my job.
But now for the next couple months all of us have to work on migrating all of our db layer models and business logic related to them to a new built in house ORM library and its a total trainwreck.
Everyone is confused, the task is very boring and obscure and deadline is around 2 months. Just to clarify: one guy did 50% of migration and it took him couple years. Now they are throwing roughly 20 devs at the problem thinking they can do this in 1-2 months.
One week already passed and TBH I havent even started working on this, I just picked up a task and now Im trying to wrap my head around this. Its so boring and obscure and expectations are so unrealistic that I want to kill myself.. Thinking of just taking my 2 weeks vacation to escape this shit or even quitting my job if this goes on longer than a month or two.3 -
Learning a piece of software from an external supplier. The manual is thick like the bible. The examples fail without explanation. Trying to contact support just leads you down an endless trail of support articles. Damn right I get frustrated and bored. Can you blaim me for rather hanging around on devRant than desperately trying to work around problems in someone else's system/documentation? Yeah, I have to pull my shit together, but they have to pull theirs first.

The only reason the barbaric, Apache server requiring, disgusting non-intuitive syntax having, pain in the dick to set up language known as "php" is even still around AT ALL is because of laravel...just let it die already...
P.s. - work is making me learn laravel/php15 -
Messing around with virtual box after work to setup some stuff for personal development. And you know what, it's kinda cool.8

I'm so tired when I got up. Didn't sleep much last night. Working on a Sunday night till 2AM because I did not work the week on the project I was given.
This is not happening for the first time, I sleep late around 3AM to do my work, as day is too noisy and distracting. Attend some meetings during the day and get lazy in the evenings. Work during nights and then the next day I'm all tired for daily stand up.
How do you people tackle this schedule? I need serious advices.5 -
Man I love composer, I really do, but sometimes, I wish it would just bloody download and load in the extensions for PHP for me... I know, I'm the laziest dev around, but typing php-curl is a lot of work 😡

I make a plan yesterday to work on my CFO's PC today during lunch. I see him around 10:30, and he tells me he will be heading out at 11:30, and will leave his door unlocked for me. I get to his office at 11:35, and the door is locked.
I check around, and find someone with a master key, but their key doesn't work. I check with maintenance, and he says the guy changed his lock recently, so only he has the key.
I guess I will be doing this tomorrow, instead. Way to go CFO.1 -
Fuck Visual Studio 2017. Fuck Roslyn. Fuck those constant shitty updates fucking up random things. Fuck most of my day being spent on not coding but fighting shitty ass laggy interface. Fuck having to work around buggy tools. Fuck features. Fuck no bugfixes. Fuck branch prediction. Fuck bloated software. Fuck Electron.

CMS + Website(Template + initial conntent) entirely in go with pictures I had to take myself first. 1000$ for around 2-3 Months of work over the time span of a year. Good thing my main job país decent.

I am thinking about leaving my job cause even though the work life balance is amazing and team is great, it doesn’t pay as much as tech companies around where I live (HCOL) and I feel like a terrible person for feeling that way.2
-
The time I save by making something work on the first try is offset by the time I spend not believing it, poking around and making sure I didn't overlook anything.

mark point of interest i don't know how to refactor but have a work around of avoiding additional changes on
nobody has feedback or alternative solution

Honestly couldn't batten it down, but it's probably somewhere around 3-4 hours. Did a few hacking competitions in college, and that's about the longest I can handle being fully productive. Nothing like a hackerrank from hell where the Perl interpreter didn't work (I know, Perl, yucky), so I was struggling to code in Python during the competition!

What are the benefits of windows server 2012 over linux? I received a CD & key for free, but I can't decide if I should play around with it for a learning experience or gift it to someone who could actually use/need it for their work.3

For a while my social life was fuck all due to death marches and poorly managed projects. I’d be so exhausted by the time the weekend rolled around that I just didn’t want to do anything.
Sticking to a healthy work schedule and prioritising family and friends after an 8 hour workday did wonders.
On weekends I just tell me wife that I want to look at technology x for a couple of hours and we plan our day around that.
Also, finding social events I want to attend like DnD made a huge difference. -
What is key for you? Money or growth opportunity?
Company A - offers X amount, and it's work environment is such that challenges you to learn and grow.
Company B - can offer you 20% more, but doesn't a lot of interesting things, your average turn around time for tasks is a day, two at best.
Which would you choose?5 -
Why is it always so much easier to just let them wait til the fix is live vs trying to explain a temp work around?
-
Okay I'm completely lost on how to do this so I'm about to write the most complicated work around I've ever thought of just to get this demo done before my internship ends next week
I both love and hate the BBC microbit
P.s. Anyone know when they'll be commercially available in the U.S??? -
i had have thinking about a project where a developers community , work us together and meet us , like a coworking , but online , share us desktop , videoconference , real time meetups about coding , freelance or enterprise dev , share projects , but human touch around , not forum , something more social , share locations etc etc ....... it sounds cool?

Ros melodic in a strictly python 2.7 environment mixes horribly with a PyTorch based RL module... Time to work around with terminal calls from the latter
*sigh*1 -
I have two potential offers. A is too good (pay, hours, stability, perks). B is decent (good pay but not so stable, no idea on perks but the work seems cool). Despite better work I'm not inclined to go for B. It is from my previous interview experience rant. People seem shitty, or at least as bad as the ones I'm leaving.
I don't wanna accept A either because they are expecting a longer stay and right now I'm in a state where I don't want to commit more than 6-7 months to anything. 😞
But I don't have any other offers and there aren't any short term projects coming up in my search.
Ugh.11 -
Are you an off-shore contractor working for a US company? How do you really feel about working US Hours?
I have several contractors on my team who say "I'm willing to work any shift" but I need you to be honest with me on devRant... how do you really feel? Do you have families? Do you prefer to work your normal hours? Why do all of my contractors martyr themselves to work whenever they think makes me happy?
I can work around your requests, I'd probably get better work if you're happier and well rested. I'm not sure what I'm missing, are these hours actually better for you and your family?2 -
What is the general rule/idea around meetings outside of your work hours?
It has happened several times that I wasn't able to join some meetings that were outside of my work hours. I try to join but some thing or the other comes up and then I miss it. I make sure to join any meeting that's highly important or if it's about anything related to my work (or if I'm required to attend).
I work with people in different time zones and there was a meeting set after 8:30pm my time, and I wasn't able to join. My coworker messaged me, in a passive aggressive way (seemingly), asking if he needs to remind me before every meeting in my calendar so that I would join.
I feel like I'm not being paid enough for the work that I do, and I work around 8-9 hours (sometimes 10 and I don't get paid for overtime).
On top of that, am I obligated to attend every meeting and not have anything planned or unplanned to do after work hours? (I don't think I should have any obligation)
I don't have previous experience of working with international teams/clients before, so I'm not sure what I should do here.9 -

A question/survey for the community.
I'm a junior web developer who has the bug for traveling. I want to work in different countries and move around a lot. How could I make that work? I'm US born without a dime of debt and a wanderer's soul. Do I just simply apply to jobs in different countries? Do I do this until I can safely freelance? Thoughts? Help? Ideas? -

The day I'm fucking around with Kafka Streams API and had to work with Java after swearing it off 5 years ago for JS bae...
Is the day that Apache's everything is down. Can't even hit their fucking website. I just want a fat jar. Just one. -
Doing office even when it's vacation day today...
Not because I am a workaholic or there is work pressure from company...
But because I like doing my work as a developer and it's quite peaceful and fun to code for some hours rather than idling around at home figuring out how to kill time especially during this lockdown period...
P.S. Planning to find some time to learn from online tutorials too in the evening 😁2 -
Rather than using the project management software that the company has spent the past year getting set up and stuck into, the new ops manager seems to think that faffing around in Google Sheets and making pretty schedules is the way forward.
If you're doing some work that's in your actual job list, but not in the new pipeline, ohhhh boy. -
I really don't have much of any social life, and it's quite ok. I usually hang around with guys in the office every once in a while and if there is a football match going on, especially during this World cup. Maybe due to this I was even awarded a 100% raise, which is quite awesome. Nothing bad with being a loner sometimes things just work out for you, plus I get to concentrate on work a lot more than my peers. ^_^

Originally designed backend to work one way but then frontend UX was shit because of how the app was structured. Have reworked frontend to be structured differently and now I have to work around the original backend structure because I don't have time to rewrite it. Everything's a mess. It works, but it could be way simpler.
This sucks.1 -
Getting extremely tired of AWS api ratelimiting. My past few weeks were about those, hitting them with pretty standard terraform stuff and trying to work around how to avoid them.5
-
Spent all day fucking around with a tool, hoping to make it work, only to realize that I could just use Jinja templating and a cheap command line alias to render the template all along.

I was finally able to set up a server with my coworker's help in our work office. After struggling trying to get CoreOS to work, I quit and just went with Ubuntu Server 16.04. It's a SFF PC that we had lying around. The purpose is to run applications in Docker containers for QA, demo, and performance testing. I can say it was truly a productive day...

Love the way our "senior" dev jumps into a project without reading the docs or even comments for that matter, removes and shifts things around then sits with me for 3 hours wondering why it won't work.
