Heard a CEO say at a conference that they hire the most competent candidate. Unless there is a woman in the candidates. Then they hire the woman.
That seems pretty sexist to me.33 -
I don't get 50 shades of grey.
They should have called it: "256 shades of gray unless you're on 10bit HDR, then its 1024 shades of grey"
That would have made much more sense9 -
My dad used to be a software engineer so he and my mom understand. They just "want better" for their daughter, and for me to "use my gifts" whatever those are.
Unless they mean my sarcasm and foul mouth. But I can use those as a dev.8 -
Internship has taught me that as long as you know one good language then you can do anything in other language with a little bit help from online.
Unless it's c++.
c++ has pointer.
That means you're fucked.
That also means you're in for a lot of fun.9 -
"Never fix a bug which has stayed in the system for a long time, unless asked for. The bug might actually be a feature for the user."

Headphones ON ears means DON'T disturb unless it's important.
Talking about the chance of rain is not f*ing important. Especially when it's the 10th effin time I'm interrupted by nonsense officetalk in one hour!6 -
Cocaine... Lots and lots of cocaine...
I'm joking, don't to drugs kids :)
Unless it's cocaine.. God I love cocaine6 -

Hotel offers no breakfast, towels are not exchanged unless you request every day, staff does not speak English, cleanness is clearly very broad definition...
WiFi is excellent.
5/5 would recommend.4 -
I don't get people who rant about missing brackets... Your IDE/Editor will notice it and you're going to notice it. Unless of course you use Notepad.
It's not funny anymore.6 -
"I'll not sign off this project unless you promise me that the app will NOT GET WET WHEN YOU UPLOAD IT TO THE CLOUD" (was a desk application... I left the company that same day and promised myself I'll never get back)4

Merry Christmas to the whole pile of you! ⛄
Unless you don't want a merry Christmas. Then that's fine as well8 -
"Unless it's the big red button with launch codes, there are no buttons you can press that I can't unpress"
Translation: you have to TRY to mess up so bad it's beyond repair.4 -
I don't mind if you down vote my answers on stack-overflow. But unless you leave a better answer or a comment explaining why, you are a fucking troll and an asshole.
I MEAN, YOU SHOULD TAKE A BIG STEP BACK AND LITERALLY FUCK YOUR OWN FACE!!!!
You aren't helping me or others learn from our mistakes by showing us the better way.32 -
Fleksy, if you're going to tell me through a fucking annoying notification that you won't run unless I update Google play services (those can go fuck themselves, I'm not updating that fucking malware) one more goddamn time, I'll fucking exterminate you.8

Unless you had a horrible accident where you lost most of your fingers, I don't understand why anyone would do this. I had to double check I wasn't looking at obfuscated code.

Is it just me or does this shirt make no sense? If your coffee was empty, then it would return true and you would keep coding. If it was not empty you would fill it.
Plus it's not a while loop, so unless this is some sort of recursion you wouldn't keep going....4 -
I draw things! I bet we all draw things, but I still think it counts as nerdy.
...unless you draw UML diagrams on whiteboards. Doesn't count.
... unless you draw stick figures battling ON those UML diagrams. Counts.
... unless those stick figures battling demonstrate dependencies or demographics. Doesn't count.
... unless you put little pirate hats on them. Counts.
... unless you're contracting for a Somali counter-piracy recon project. Doesn't count.
... unless you also include dank memes. Counts.3 -

Guy using VPN:
why would anybody use tor unless he hides something?
Me (using Tor):
why would anyone use VPN unless he hides something?
In my opinion there is no difference in using Tor than in using VPN, it's all about privacy. I would consider Tor as an free alternative for your everyday privacy needs, if you can't afford VPN, or am I wrong?22 -
Snippet of an overheard conversation today:
"LOL maths beyond basic arithmetic is so dumb. No-one needs pythagoras, trig, calculus or any of that crap unless they have some unholy desire to find the geometric properties of their sandwich."

Do you still store your music files locally?
I like owning my music files on my storage.
Disadvantages:
Storage space
Time spent organising metadata
Advantages:
Savour the quality
Accessible
I don't have an internet access all the time unless I'm home. I feel left behind seeing everyone just streaming music.21 -
does every computer guy has this sitting problem....
for the record i do
and i never notice that unless and until i m finished with my work😂😂😂😂😂😂3 -
Worst realisation of myself when I was a greenhorn dev? Nobody gives a f***ing damn of what you achieve as a software developer. For them you're just the uncool nerd - end of story. That's where I just stopped having any conversations about my job at all... unless it's with other devs.10

YouTube. I used to love it a lot but now I don't recognize it. It pushes its agenda everywhere only certain content becoming popular. And regular people don't have much of a way for getting noticed unless they're in an extremely niche section. It's gone the way of the TV and I don't think it's coming back barring a massive internal restructuring.2

Worked for the US federal government. Stuff couldn't be used unless it had been approved. Had to us Python 2.6. Python 3 was out by then. Basically anything brand new or even new within the last 5 years wasn't allowed, but was expected to make apps that represented modern web apps.1

My bitch ass employer won't allow work from home saying unless government enforces it, he can't allow it and reason he is giving is that wE wOn't be AbLE tO communicAtE via SkyPE?
I am so pissed that such people. Everyone citizen has non serious attitude that they saying things like "Nothing gonna happen", "Chill, you are panic way to much about the Corona virus", while number of cases are increasing exponentially here too!
WTF,
I have realized that people don't understand something unless it happens to them.
This is shit.
As rational beings, we should be taking drastic measures while we can but NO!

Can ppl stop bitching out about their ides not running smoothly with 8gb+ ram? I mean 8gb ram wise is enough, unless you have 20+ browser tabs open, watching some casual porn, downloading some more porn in the background and maybe running some benchmarks just for the sake of not letting your dollars go to waste...15

Do ya ever hate how often people use the term "AI" so loosely. It's like saying your thermostat or your "smart oven" (or "smart"-everything) is "AI-infused" because it can regulate the temperature. Unless the machine actually learns something for next time around, a bunch of "if" statements isn't truly AI in my book.5

6 am, searching for the reason that put the programm in a non-responding state since 4 am. Turns out I forgot to manipulate the count variable in a while loop, so unless the first object wasn't the correct one, it hot stuck.

PHP ist one of the languages I use regularly, but not the main language.
Anyhow, passing an array to a function will create a Copy of the array unless you specifically choose to Pass the reference.
That's seriously fucked up. What other language does that?! Coming from C, Java, Python to PHP I was not prepared to expect shit like that.21 -
Can't fucking stand permanently lazy devs who don't give a shit about their craft.
Fuck off and go do something else that you actually give a shit about! *
😤😤😤😤🤬
* unless you're burnt out - then I'm sorry they overworked you x5 -
If coding was a thing 100+ years ago, we'd have quotes by great men like "You won't have space for new ideas unless you shit out the old ones in the toilet." which would be an alternative for "the toilet is the best place to think of algorithms and fixes."

This is why you don't want to have Dev gf. Unless you like emotional Rollercoasters. Trust me, had one...26

How I hate when you can't change notification sounds and/or vibrations... Unless I'm totally blind this includes DevRant too at least on Android 😁8

Dear person who extended my <T> to <Type> in the documentation:

So after two hours of debugging I get to know that Chrome doesn't differentiate between font-weight 100-500 unless on a Mac, and IE does, but IE doesn't support the <picture > tag 😶9

I love it when rather than fix the bug that is causing the faulty data you write a bot on a schedule to clean up the faulty data. It's like a bot battle who can mess up / clean up the data the fastest. Unless your clean up bot has a bug then you are just F'ed.2

It's only after switching to Linux you realize what all you were missing as a Dev. A package manager, excellent terminal and complete control of your system especially the updates, rock solid depending on the distro and many more. Unless I need to develop for Windows or mac I'm not switching. Long live Linux.15

ChatGPT and similar thing. Sooner or later people will get enough of the novelty and such systems will remain only as some niche tools, unless something extraordinary happens.12

"a 5% feature (used by less than 5% of all users) is a distraction for all the other users, and is better removed, unless it’s really critical (a small number of users do need to cancel service, for example)." - Neil Hunt8
-
A morbid realization (I am just wasting your time keep scrolling)
Unless someone takes a stand for the user, and their comfort and requirements, unless someone looks a client straight in the eye and says "no, I will not do that, and neither will my team" and denies them their request, nothing will change, good devs will keep losing their spark to save themselves frustration, good people will walk away and the tyranny that we face daily grows... unless someone stands up, someone who cannot be knocked down, or reprimanded and told they're wrong for fighting for what's right.. unless someone stands up for what is right and fair... nothing changes... and nothing ever will... poor programs, bad games and content, lower standards, frustrated users, annoyance that you don't matter as a user or a dev will never go away... unless someone says enough. But no one will, money is the boss, morality a liability, and people an abundant resource. This world is backwards, devs are carrying the blame and no one who is able, cares enough to say "that's enough!".13 -
Tip: If you try to show LaTeX to someone and you want to show them examples, don't use the images of your search engine of choice for the examples unless you put "formula" next to it.
My teacher at least understood, lul.6 -
As a guy who really just started his web development life I just say the most fun I have is clicking the refresh button ( or npm does it for me ) and seeing my magic work, unless it doesn't and then I press again , maybe this time it will ..2

My process to start new coding project?
Unless it was dictated by the powers that be, my process usually begins/began when I hear..
"It's impossible for us to make the program do that" or equivalent negative comment.
It triggers a "Someone hold my beer" area in my brain.5 -
My partner can't wrap her head around why I write all forms of communication in a formal matter, whether it be an email, bug report or text message.
I keep telling her you never know who you are actually talking to unless your face to face, anyone else agree with this logic?5 -
Every sacrifice you make for your job will be forgotten in a minute and won’t be rewarded unless you force their hand.
Luckily, I outsourced this experience and have never made sacrifices.2 -
So true and why I've gone on and on over years saying technical interviews are just crap... Good solutions cannot be thought of in 30mins unless you recite what you remembered beforehand.
Are you looking for creators and thinkers or robots -
Never do personal stuff at work, never do work stuff unless hours are being counted. Proper separation of duties.
Boss always tells us we only work 38 hours a week and any other time we do we can take off later.
Procrastination for work projects thus usually involves working on unrelated, more exciting projects instead of the one with the hard deadline ;)1 -
Who else makes it a habit of (in most cases) upvoting the main post when they respond to it?
Unless it's just a terrible post but you had to say something.
But anything neutral and above I respond to, i++14 -
Websites that show a notification dot the first time I visit with zero interaction from my end: I hope you die. This is terrible exploitation of UX, and unless I really need something, I'm leaving the site within seconds.2

So the algorithm wanted to prove differently? has the audience spoken?
Personally I don't use Reddit nor Facebook, so I hardly notice reposts unless they come from Twitter.3 -

My dad always tells me to write apps to make money.
I did try that before but conclusion I came to was I can only create apps for myself, not for others. (Unless of course it's a job which gaurantees pay and usually I'm still a user).
Thoughts? How do you guys code/freelance just for the money?19 -
Learn VIM. Unless you're doing Java or some other compiled static typed language. In that case: learn JavaScript and then learn VIM. 😎3

Nobody, nobody, nobody should accept an office-only position unless they actually want to work in an office. I wanna learn something new but everytime I take one course I stop at the first video u.u

Me: You provided the wrong credentials for AWS. That’s why it won’t work. Please provide updated ones using document I emailed you last month.
Client: I forgot how to do that. Will you be free tonight after 9pm?
Me:.....
Yes. This really just happened. No. I am not doing it unless they pay hourly. -
Scrum CSM course: it's good to accept that we can't be perfect.
Also CSM course (1): if it's not followed perfectly it's not scrum
Also CSM course (2): scrum won't work in your team unless the whole organization adopts it
CSM course provider after cert: $1k CSM cert isn't enough to practice Scrum responsibly12 -
All I'm saying is that if we want speech completely locked down on all social media platforms, simply hire the StackOverflow mods and the problem is solved. Nobody will be able to post anything unless the mods believe it's worthwhile for everyone to read and respond to.
That's it. That's the rant.4 -
Broke down and asked the junior dev to help me hash out an issue. He's also struggling with it.
I'm not a retard after all... unless were both retards.1 -

I have the same problem as @linuxxx does. Buying things when I really don't need to.
I went to a mall with a friend today because his headset was literally falling apart. We both bought new headsets. Great.

Why THE FUCK is Google Maps React just a gray rectangle unless we resize the window and it magically appears.

Data Scientists/Researchers
Stop building libraries.
You can't build libraries.
You're not software engineers.
Write your script as plainly as possible.
Why?
Cus for every fucking paper that has code associated with it, unless it's from Meta or Google, I'm having to edit to make shit work.
Stop over-engineering shit.
Write your model and fuck off.12 -

An area of my company hired a new director who directed his “DevOps” team to implement a process that would prevent the CI server from running tests on a PR unless the code was reviewed first. He was worried that there would be too many tests executing with 400 developers committing code frequently.
He’s from Yahoo.12 -

Apparently some smart shithead decided to override ctrl+f browser behavior when you edit files directly on github.
Edit renders only part of file and displays search under edit file label that disappears every time you find something. ( what if there is more then one occurrence smartass )
Default ctrl+f can’t find text on page unless it’s displayed.

Dear theme designers, unless you are designing an app specifically with OLED in mind... Do not use black as a main background colour.
It just looks horrible IMO, key example on good dark theme is the windows store and a example of horrible dark theming is the settings app.

Public REST (-inspired) API. Should I skip numeric IDs because it's easy for consumers to snoop around?
Example:

Is it just security by obscurity if I use, like, guids or something instead of sequental IDs?17 -

Okay, had a freelance JavaScript gig (with Three.js 3d lib). Usually I put the code on github so I have easier time switching between Desktop and laptop during work, unless I have to sign an NDA or something. Today at 5 AM I got mail from freelancing site support that client reported me for having code on public repo (but it's not like it is a proprietary software, it's based on threejs editor). I made repo private and went to sleep. Later I'm reading through messages, guy was cursing me, threatend to sue me etc. Ended up dropping the client. Did I do something really unprofessional? Unless I'm told not to, I want to show my code and I don't believe in not showing it by default. What do you guys think?13

New person joins client's team to handle one product on the website and asks me to restructure the whole site. Sorry, pal, but unless you have money to add to the project's already spoken-for pot of resources for features, you're gonna have to wait til next year.

I fucking hate apple so goddamn much. What is with IT and their obsession with error messages?
"If there is no error message, I cannot help"

C# has static binding by default. Meaning methods aren't overrideable unless you specifically tag them as virtual. I love how in java you can take someone else's random class and override everything with some additional or alternate behaviour.13

Hosting Rails is such a pain in the butt.
Heroku, too expensive
DigitalOcean, hard to maintain unless using Hatchbox (Hatchbox, too expensive)
Shared cPanel hosting, too limited, too slow...

One day every 2 week, we got to spend the Friday just learning and trying stuff. No working on projects unless it's critical.
On these days, I feel like I learn much more than in the rest of the weeks.
Today I built (normally Python developer) a web service using Rust. -
Take a day off, entire system goes down. Come in the next day: "We need to fix this".
12 hours later we get the system back up and a significant design flaw is now known which needs to be fixed on Monday.
It feels good to have the bandaid in place.
Don't use cursors kids, unless you absolutely have to.3 -
My code works.
Well, it should, but not like this.
I've set some datas to a nested form, saved by a variable named 'stat1', however the code won't work unless I use a variable named 'fields'. Not 'stat1'. I'm only 24 years old and I already feel too old for this shit.3 -

There HR sucks, can't call on booked time, for phone screening and wanted me after I applied for job 4 months ago. I still entertained them. But now, it has gone too far.
I am blacklisting GM for life. I will never ever work for them, unless they give me 1 Million per month2 -
If a bug is logged don't mark it as resolved unless you commit that resolution.
Also don't mark it resolved without at least a one-liner of the fix/expected behavior.1 -
Anyone else find slack a time waster unless you are actively working on a team? I feel it fails when used for a user group: l have left most slack teams because it is like repeatedly looking in the fridge and not finding anything interesting.4

So another rant inspired me.
Tell me one fact or detail about your favorite programming language, other devs not using it, might not know about.
I go with: In Delphi you don't have garbage collection, unless you use interfaces the right way.7 -
Linux, Linux, Linux. That is ALL I hear around these parts! If ya think about it nobody makes a dime off of Linux instead of the end-user. Well, unless that user is a developer. In that case, OPEN SOURCE EVERYTHING boi.7
-
I want to be able to learn how to program as of now but there's no good courses online that I can actually interact with and my programming elective starts next semester in school. So unless one of you Devs can give a good suggestion, I'm basically sitting here playing with the commands I do know in my Linux terminal.6

1337 haxxor here! jk, but its fun to analyze the sourcecode of a streaming site to find the video source giving a 403 error on direct download unless i force the beforeload-adress as a referrer. quite the feeling like my first ftp-download album back in the days.
i know i am childish.1 -
Will there be a follow user list feature in the future for devRant? Something similar to Twitter's list feature. I have a few friends who have joined but no easy way to view their rants.
Unless the feature is already there and I can't seem to find it?1 -
Picking up the work on an existing Wordpress site.
When a non-tech person started a WP page and you as a software engineer should "improve it a little bit, since [the client] already did most of the work"...
By now - unless I really cannot get around it - I refuse to start working extensively on existing wordpress sites. -
I can’t code without dead silence. I cannot concentrate on coding whatsoever unless there is dead silence in my house which leads me to usually coding in the middle of the night so I don’t hear people. Then I lose sleep and I lose my health. Anyone else?6

This has just happened

I have sales team less than 1m away.

Developer environment on Mac > Developer environment on Windows.
Just saying. Unless it’s for game development. Or for shitty server software development AKA Microsoft Server 2003.11 -

Fuck you Python! "It's global, unless you modify it. Then you have to use a keyword first." "It is passing reference by value." Asshole language that tries to be too flexible!2

Thanks for nothing, Insomnia REST. Everyone using it beware: turn off auto update, version 8.0 will look you out of your projects unless you create an account with them.
Get fucked.4 -
Honestly... just discipline. We're not addicts (unless any of you are I guess) but if you need to focus then just have a quiet word with yourself.
Don't go on Netflix or whatever social media brain dissolver that you subscribe to.
In the words of Mr LaBouf: just do it. -
To my vigilant code review overlords, yes, I appreciate the scrutiny, but must we nitpick every variable name? I've been told my camelCase is more like llamaCase.
Let's focus on real bugs, not whether my indentation is an affront to nature.
Remember, the perfect code doesn't exist – unless you're coding on a cloud XD4 -

2 days (actually about 4 hours) of battling a stupid CSS grid arrange that wouldn't behave.
Turns out 1fr (aka fill parent) works unless the child is another grid. In that case it forgets and just stretches the freaking parent as if there was no rule whatsoever.
If you have problems with CSS grids, consider trying flattening the markup...3 -
Concatenation of strings in a loop (in C#). Seriously. It's just so easy and unless you are doing something memory intensive or awful (in which case I am sorry) it really doesn't do much harm if any.

Just learnt that some people in the access admin team intentionally back log their tickets just to tell people how busy they are.
But most request you raise in their queue doesn't get resolved unless you show up at their desks.2 -
When my Firefox window is too narrow devRant completely shits all over itself and glitches so hard that rants cannot be scrolled anymore unless I make the window larger and go apeshit on the scrollbar until it fixes itself again.
I thought my mouse broke.2 -
There is no such thing as a "Random Error".
Unless you are using rand() to select a random index from an array. And you forget to add - 1 to the generated index.
Now that is one hell of a random error! -

Developed a microsite for a temporary campaign. Involves generating 1.5million promo codes on excel. Done... good luck importing it to mysql. Campaign launch is tonight while importing cant be successful unless importing 10K at a time -_-4

I am implementing an API. How do I know what to do? Read the docs! Unless... there's none on the website. Asked by email and they could provide a PDF, which contains some graphics which you're free to interpret ...
Machine readable description? Nope.
How do I get to know about updates to the API? *blank stare*4 -

Maybe I'm stupid, but I'm annoyed that there are no good ways to debug Blazor WASM.

Newton's first law integrated into work estimation:
For every simple task there is a complex solution which devs will choose and it will take an infinite amount of time, unless acted upon by an unbalanced force.

Okay, since I'm handicapped in Linux due to our education system which forced us to learn on windows, I switched over to Linux, Ubuntu to be specific and I can't get anything done unless I am root, So suggest me another Linux OS with full root, Exceptions Kali Linux and Arch Linux15

Is the devRant website not feature complete or am I just stupid? Liked rants and comment history only go like 30-40 entries back unless you use the app.6

The *project* build succeeded so you decided to check in your code changes. OK? WRONG! Always build *the whole solution* before checking in code! Never check in something doesn't build unless you want to make me groan *making groaning noises*

I hate how hostile the game dev scene is to newcomers. Unless you have a game to show for or a success story, they don't give a shit about you. What gives?3

Screw my companys intern restrictions. I went to work briefly for a meeting today and the manager cancelled it. Wouldn't be a problem unless I couldn't check my outlook except at work... which is the case because I'm classified as an intern. Ugh!2

Considering what must be told and making the meeting as short as possible
Unless you just wanna talk with someone and maybe drink something, in that case, just meet with no expectation -

devRant app feature request:

One manager at the Client company tells us that unless we submit weekly timesheets we wont get paid.
We are not their employees, nor do we have an agreement with them for full time work.
" Whole thought process is to structure the engagement better ,so that we can implement better governance and provide better visibility."
Anyone understand what is being said above? Jargon.2 -

What's a good book for learning Tensorflow... and maybe ML Basics through usages/examples?

Newton's 2nd Law:

I don't think that "code" should be used as a verb. A programmer 'writes' code or 'programs' something. I'd rather not be called a "coder." Unless it's Halloween and I'm dressed up as a brogrammer.3

Top reason to not be a dev? There are so many ways to shoot yourself in a foot. Some of them are creative, some of them are fun. Unless it happens to you.1

Cross training is a flat out myth. It can’t be done unless the trainees are going to be working on the system day in and day out. How is someone expected to know a system they’ve only seen in presentations six months ago? There are developers that work on a system and ones that don’t - it’s that simple.2

Has anyone seen an AI/ML/whatever in the wild? I mean, an _actual_ implementation in production that is actually used.
And Powerpoint slide does not count (unless it of course were created by AI/ML/whatever).
I hear a lot of big words from management but I can’t see anything anywhere.9 -
Several months ago I was praising antd's forms but honestly I can't figure how to debug them with React Context Devtools, let alone do that inside React Storybook.

Checking for root is maintaining a false façade of security. By the definition of root it can always be bypassed and we should be designing workflows to discourage logging in from an untrusted device unless you have 2fa.1

Everything you own needs to be stored and be taken care of:
Likewise every line of code you commit and push, needs to be maintained (unless it's dead). -
My phone running [Google] Android 8.1 just updated the SystemUI in the background rendering the phone unusable unless SystemUI were to be restarted 🤯
It did work properly after a restart so that's good.5 -

How much bullshit flows through me every day is unbelievable unless filmed. I am like an amazon warehouse for bullshit. I am full of shit. Thanks to school and recruiters of course

Face it.
Most of the time, in PHP, you're just using Contracts to be cool.
Unless you're coding something like a framework, I don't see the point.
Or I guess, if you're hiring someone to take on your project... but even then, that person might feel restricted for no reason?7 -

yeah sure, having all 5 devs only ever working directly on the production branch and not being allowed to save anything post-release unless it's an urgent bugfix sounds like a great idea

Ya'll on Signal yet? Now that they are on the rise, they'll need funds and a revenue model. You can't depend on donations unless you're Wikimedia. Learning C# coming from Java...
What's the fuss about properties? As i see it, theyre only usefull for binding, as else they just work as syntetic sugar instead of getter/setter methods.
But properties are also limited to give response back, like a successfull set, unless you start throwing exceptions..
And if a set property has if(age>5){this.age=age} then if i pass the property a 4, you will never know as a user that it failed (again, unless you start throwing exceptions)
Im kinda feeling like i want to use get/set methods until i need to bind, then of course use property ?? Am i all off here?25 -
!rant Learned from an online course that you can use Chrome Snippets (JS) to run your own code as an entire file rather than writing it all in console (which only supports line by line unless you do shift + enter).

I love how they go out of the way to allow the same photos of them to be taken. of course unless they're followed on successive runs there is no way of ensuring their capture is there which is what makes this system of theirs almost make sense if not for allowing more of their kind to be bred
