I was giving an interview this other day and I was sharing my screen with the interviewer.
Interviewer 😦: Is this linux you are using?
Me 😅: Ah yes. Since this is a coding round I am not comfortable on windows for coding.
Interviewer 😳: And this is your personal laptop?
Me 😁: Yes, since the only use of windows is primarily to play games and the games I play are usually supported on linux, I dont see any reason why my daily driver should be anything other than linux.
Interviewer 😯: What distro is this?? Looks cool.
Me 😆: Its Ubuntu with KDE Plasma. There are some really cool things in here which actually make my life quite easier.
Interviewer ☺️: I must check this out today itself. Lets start with the interview then.
Me 😊: *Blushing in my mind
And this is how you score some instant brownie points in an interview. Actually if truth be told, that laptop was actually my work laptop and my personal laptop has windows on it because nvidia and Assassin's Creed.19 -
Linux sucks.
Now now, chill. I'm using it as my main OS for a few years now. I know what I'm talking and this title is a bit click-baity, but this just has to go out there:
1. It's usable as a Windows replacement just fine - FALSE. XFCE4 is years old and buggy as hell especially on multi-monitor set-up, Gnome3 gets stuck more often than my Windows 98 machine used to, KDE is like a rich kid on meth. Plug in Bluetooth headphones? Well no, sorry, you have to research that online, since you'll probably need to install some packages for it to work. Did I say "work"? Well no, because after more research you realize that Debian on Gnome3 on gdm3 launches pulseaudio on its own, so you have 2 instances of pulseaudio, and one of them is stealing your headphones sometimes and you either have no sound or shitty sound. How do I know that you ask? The same way I know everything else - every time you try to do something new on any Linux, it involves a ton of research. Exciting research, don't get me wrong, but at this point it looks more like a toy than a reliable desktop computer operating system.
2. And why am I using pulseaudio? Why not alsa? years ago people were discussing on forums that pulseaudio is old and dead, yet here we are with new LTS release of Ubuntu still shining with Pulseaudio. How about several different service management systems being deprecated by new ones, each having different configurations and calling methods? Apparently systemd is old and lame now. It's a mix of 10 year old software that works badly, with a 5 year old replacement that works worse, somehow trying to live under the same roof. Does it work? Ask my headphones who sound like a fucking dial-up modem.
3. Let's talk about displays, shall we? xorg is old and deprecated, right? We got Wayland that's mostly stable. Don't know what that is? That's just basic knowledge for Linux. And when you try to install network-manager, it also tries to install Mir toolkits. Because why the fuck not install 3 display managers when you want a network manager, of which one is old and dying, one is young and stupid, and another is an infant that died of cancer?
4. Want to integrate with Google Drive? Yeah, there's a tool that mounts the drive as a local directory. Yeah only for Ubuntu. Want it on Debian? You need to compile it. Oh wait, it's on Ocaml, because fuck mainstream languages, we're hipsters. How do you compile Ocaml? Well you need to have Ocaml on your system, dummy. How do you do that? Well you need to compile Ocaml. Ok, how do I do that? Well, git clone, download and install some dependencies, configure, make... oh sorry, you're using libssl1.0.2g when you need libssl1.0.1f, nope, sorry, won't work. Want to install libssl1.0.1f? Why? You already have the "g", stupid! Want to remove libssl1.0.2g? Bye-bye literally everything that you have on your PC. But at least you got the "f". Does it work now? Well no, because you need libssl1.0.2g for another dependency to work.
And all I ever wanted was to get a fucking document from google drive (not nudes, I promise).
5. Want to watch a movie? Let me tear that screen in half and make the bottom half late by a couple of frames, because who needs vertical sync, right? Oh you do? Well install the native drivers maybe. Oh you have? Welcome to eternal Boot to Recovery mode, motherfucka!
---------------------------------
Yeah, most of the times things work just fine. But the reason I know what those things are and how they work is not curiosity. The reason that I know the inner workings of Linux much better than the inner workings of Windows, is because in those few years that I've been using it full time, it has caused me 10 times more headache than I have ever experienced with other systems. And it's not the usual annoyances like "OMG it rebooted when I didn't ask it to", but more like "Oh, it won't work and I need 2 days to find out why" kind of stuff, because even if you experience the same thing again, it's always caused by some new shit and the old solution won't work any more.
I still love it, and will continue to use it. I don't know why really. Maybe because I'm not afraid of fucking it up any more? Maybe because I can do what I want in it and recovering will be easier than on Windows?
It's a toy for me, after all these years. And I also use it for professional reasons.
But whenever someone presents it as a better alternative to Windows, I just want to puke.51 -
"so you use Ubuntu" she said ,
"why don't you go for Linux ?" she asked.
so I dumped my girlfriend26 -
Had an external hdd for backing up family photos etc. (back when I just discovered Linux and still used windows as well)
Connected it to my windows system and it said that the thing was corrupt and i had to format it.
Well fuck, a few hundred gb's of pictures, memories, backups etc etc probably lost. (keep in mind I didn't know that much about computers at that point)
Was about to format that thing with literally tears in my eyes when I thought I'd, because why the fuck not since I was out of options anyways, try it as well on my Ubuntu installation.
EVERYTHING WAS STILL ON THERE AND PERFECTLY ACCESSIBLE.
After a very much rage attack on windows I formatted the windows partition and used that as a backup space as well :).30 -
A convo with my !dev colleague.
Her: Can i use your PC for a while?
Me: Yeah sure.
Her: Why is this so wierd? Why i can't refresh?
Me: It's Ubuntu.
Her: Man, this sucks, you should use windows 10, it's the latest!
End of Convo.
After that day, i heard her talking to my other colleague.
Her: "Go ask him. The one with the weird PC."
--------------------
SHOULD I KILL HER?22 -
Recently I've been upgrading ubuntu. It took almost midnight.
Suddenly my area witnessed low voltage.
That woke up my dad.
(Now the funny part)
He looked at my laptop. Ordered me to stop whatever is running on it.
Naturally, I asked why!
No response.
Next morning, I came to know my dad thought those gibberish commands running on terminal caused that voltage to drop.
I laughed like hell...
(Me infornt of dad - hackerman)
(Not that funny tho)
Fin.3 -
Me: chooses English for language, French for keyboard (because that's what my keyboard happens to be), speaks Dutch natively
Windows: oh great! You've told me to display everything in Windows in English. So I'll just show you the Windows store in Dutch, French and English (edit, and Russian in one of the Store tabs, for God knows why), all at once! Because who cares about your language settings anyway, right. You appear to be from Belgium from your IP, so obviously you speak both of these languages despite your personal preferences. Additionally, have some Candy Crush Soda Saga that you've never asked for.
And the application that you wanted to install - Ubuntu? Fuck you, you can't install it, for "reasons" that we've conveniently put in French, because you obviously speak that, right.
HOW ABOUT YOU FUCKING GO FUCK YOURSELF, MICROSOFT?!17 -
Was at my sisters place a little ago and somehow we came at the subject of her laptop.
For everyone who thinks I'm posting this solely to hate on windows, I'm not. This really happened and if you don't believe it, well, so be it, I guess.
Also keep in mind that's she's using a stock version without anything except for word and itunes installed.
She got it a couple of years ago and I dual booted it for her (windows + ubuntu). I fully expected her to use windows because of office and outlook etc.
Asked her anyways:
Me: So, you've got dual boot, although I think already know the answer, what system do you use mostly? (I didn't even consider that there was a possibility that the answer would be ubuntu or linux)
Sister: Ubuntu!
Me:
Me:
Me:
Me:
Me:
Me:
Me:
Me: 😵
Me: Sorry, what? You're not using windows as primary system?!
Sister: No. It at first takes that motherfucking system about 5 minutes to reach the FUCKING LOGIN SCREEN.
Me: Ow, that's bad :/
Me: *turns laptop on and indeed, it takes a fuckton of time*
Me: Is the password still the same as when I set it up for you?
Sister: Yesss.
Me: *types the password, it's working, loading screen appears*
Sister: Would you like a coffee?
Me: Uhm.... sure? But that would take you about 10-15 minutes to make.......?
Sister: Yes. And that's exactly how long it takes before that fucking piece of shit called windows has finally loaded the FUCKING DESKTOP.
Me: 😅
Me: Okay but it can't be that bad, right? I mean, I hate windows but you mostly need it for studies and such and as you know I'm not judging you for tha......
Sister: YES IT IS THAT FUCKING BAD. WHEN I'M IN CLASS, IT TAKES HALF THE FUCKING CLASS TO LOAD BEFORE I CAN OPEN WORD OR WHAT-THE-FUCK EVER.
THAT'S WHY I USE UBUNTU PRIMARILY, BECAUSE, ALTOUGH IT'S NOT MY FAVOURITE SYSTEM, IT. JUST. FUCKING. WORKS.
Well, I did definitely NOT see that one coming!
There is some bloatware on there but definitely as bad as what would cause this. Virus scan turned up empty. No. Fucking. Clue.
It's not a gaming laptop or anything but come on, it should run either windows or linux very well.51 -
Got to learn Shopware (the eCommerce thingy written in PHP) for the job.
Bought a book worth ~60$.
The author writes: "Use vagrant it's soooooo comfy and cozy and everything!".
Sure, why not.
Got to get online over my smartphone.
Cloned the repo with the Vagrantfile.
Did a 'vagrant up'.
Downloaded the Ubuntu box of around 1.5 GB (reminder: over my smartphone which has around 3 GB 'highspeed' internet connection).
Vagrant initialized and provisioned the box.
Error.
Error?
Error.
VT-X is not enabled. Hm. Strange. Wait...when it's not enabled, can it be that...
Yep.
THIS SHITTY LAPTOP SCHMAPTOP DOES NOT SUPPORT VT-X AND I PULVERIZED JUST THE HALF OF MY INTERNET DATA FOR THIS SHITTY BOX IN ORDER TO JUST DOWNLOAD THE ZIP FILE AND INSTALL IT OLDSCHOOL-SCHMOLDSCHOOL INSTALL A APACHE VIRTUAL HOST.
Time for new hardware I think.11 -

Another incident which made a Security Researcher cry 😭😭😭
[ NOTE : Check my profile for older incident ]
-----------------------------------------------------------
I was invited by a fellow friend to a newly built Cyber Security firm , I didn't asked for any work issues as it was my friend who asked me to go there . Let's call it X for now . It was a good day , overcast weather , cloudy sky , everything was nice before I entered the company . And the conversation is as follows :
Fella - Hey! Nice to see you with us .
Me - Thanks! Where to? *Asking for my work area*
Fella - Right behind me .
Me - Good thing :)
Fella - So , the set-up is good to go I suppose .
Me - Yeah :)
*I'm in my cabin and what I can see is a Windows VM inside Ubuntu 12.4*
*Fast forward to 1 hour and now I'm at the cafeteria with the Fella*
Fella - Hey! Sup? How was the day?
Me - Fine *in a bit confused voice*
Fella - What happened mate , you good with the work?
Me - Yeah but why you've got Windows inside Ubuntu , I mean what's the use of Ubuntu when I have to work on Windows?
Fella - Do you know Linux is safe from Malwares?
Me - Yeah
Fella - That's why we are using Windows on VM inside Linux .
Me - For what?
Fella - To keep Windows safe from Malwares as in our company , we can't afford any data loss!
Me - 😵 *A big face palm which went through my head and hit another guy , made me a bit unconscious*
I ran for my life as soon as possible , in future I'm never gonna work for anyone before asking their preferences .7 -
More sysadmin focused but y’all get this stuff and I need a rant.
TLDR: Got the wrong internship.
Start working as a sysadmin/dev intern/man-of-many-hats at a small finance company (I’m still in school). Day 1: “Oh new IT guy? Just grab a PC from an empty cubicle and here’s a flash drive with Fedora, go ahead and manually install your operating system. Oh shit also your desktop has 2g of ram, a core2 duo, and we scavenged your hard drive for another dev so just go find one in the server room. And also your monitor is broken so just take one from another cubicle.”
Am shown our server room and see that someone is storing random personal shit in there (golf clubs propped against the server racks with heads mixed into the cabling, etc.). Ask why the golf clubs etc. are mixed in with the cabling and server racks and am given the silent treatment. Learn later that my boss is the owners son, and he is storing his personal stuff in our server room.
Do desktop support for end users. Another manager asks for her employees to receive copies of office 2010 (they’re running 2003 an 2007). Ask boss about licensing plans in place and upgrade schedules, he says he’ll get back to me. I explain to other manager we are working on a licensing scheme and I will keep her informed.
Next day other manager tells me (*the intern*) that she spoke with a rich business friend whose company uses fake/cracked license keys and we should do the same to keep costs down. I nod and smile. IT manager tells me we have no upgrade schedule or licensing agreement. I suggest purchasing an Office 365 subscription. Boss says $150 a year per employee is too expensive (Company pulls good money, has ~25 employees, owner is just cheap) I suggest freeware alternatives. Other manager refuses to use anything other than office 2010 as that is what she is familiar with. Boss refuses to spend any money on license keys. Learn other manager is owners wife and mother of my boss. Stalemate. No upgrades happen.
Company is running an active directory Windows Server 2003 instance that needs upgrading. I suggest 2012R2. Boss says “sure”. I ask how he will purchase the license key and he tells me he won’t.
I suggest running an Ubuntu server with LDAP functionality instead with the understanding that this will add IT employee hours for maintenance. Bosses eyes glaze over at the mention of Linux. The upgrade is put off.
Start cleaning out server room of the personal junk, labeling server racks and cables, and creating a network map. Boss asks what I’m doing. I show him the organized side of the server room and he says “okay but don’t do any more”.
... *sigh* ...20 -
Needed to download all my music from Google music, their download manager is crap (on ubuntu)
Decided to use their API, found a gem that works perfectly. Started downloading it.
Told my GF how I wanted to code something cool but gound someone else did, her response:
So why doesn't google make something ?
Me:They did, but it sucks in linux, and they have their API's which work fine.
And how are normal people supposed to make it work then?
Me: well it works, jut have to install this and run the CLI with.... wait.. am I not normal?
I guess we are not normal in the eyes of some people.18 -
I really, honestly, am getting annoyed when someone tells me that "Linux is user-friendly". Some people seem to think that because they themselves can install Linux, that anyone can, and because I still use Windows I'm some sort of a noob.
So let me tell you why I don't use Linux: because it never actually "just works". I have tried, at the very least two dozen times, to install one distro or another on a machine that I owned. Never, not even once, not even *close*, has it installed and worked without failing on some part of my hardware.
My last experience was with Ubuntu 17.04, supposed to have great hardware and software support. I have a popular Dell Alienware machine with extremely common hardware (please don't hate me, I had a great deal through work with an interest-free loan to buy it!), and I thought for just one moment that maybe Ubuntu had reached the point where it just, y'know, fucking worked when installing it... but no. Not a chance.
It started with my monitors. My secondary monitor that worked fine on Windows and never once failed to display anything, simply didn't work. It wasn't detected, it didn't turn on, it just failed. After hours of toiling with bash commands and fucking around in x conf files, I finally figured out that for some reason, it didn't like my two IDENTICAL monitors on IDENTICAL cables on the SAME video card. I fixed it by using a DVI to HDMI adapter....
Then was my sound card. It appeared to be detected and working, but it was playing at like 0.01% volume. The system volume was fine, the speaker volume was fine, everything appeared great except I literally had no fucking sound. I tried everything from using the front output to checking if it was going to my display through HDMI to "switching the audio sublayer from alsa to whatever the hell other thing exists" but nothing worked. I gave up.
My mouse? Hell. It's a Corsair Gaming mouse, nothing fancy, it only has a couple extra buttons - none of those worked, not even the goddamn scrollwheel. I didn't expect the *lights* to work, but the "back" and "Forward" buttons? COME ON. After an hour, I just gave up.
My media keyboard that's like 15 years old and is of IBM brand obviously wasn't recognized. Didn't even bother with that one.
Of my 3 different network adapters (2 connectors, one wifi), only one physical card was detected. Bluetooth didn't work. At this point I was so tired of finding things that didn't work that I tried something else.
My work VPN... holy shit have you ever tried configuring a corporate VPN on Linux? Goddamn. On windows it's "next next next finish then enter your username/password" and on Linux it's "get this specific format TLS certificate from your IT with a private key and put it in this network conf and then run this whatever command to...." yeah no.
And don't get me started on even attempting to play GAMES on this fucking OS. I mean, even installing the graphic drivers? Never in my life have I had to *exit the GUI layer of an OS* to install a graphic driver. That would be like dropping down to MS-DOS on Windows to install Nvidia drivers. Holy shit what the fuck guys. And don't get me started on WINE, I ain't touching this "not an emulator emulator" with a 10-foot pole.
And then, you start reading online for all these problems and it's a mix of "here are 9038245 steps to fix your problem in the terminal" and "fucking noob go back to Windows if you can't deal with it" posts.
It's SO FUCKING FRUSTRATING, I spent a whole day trying to get a BASIC system up and running, where it takes a half-hour AT MOST with any version of Windows. I'm just... done.
I will give Ubuntu one redeeming quality, however. On the Live USB, you can use the `dd` command to mirror a whole drive in a few minutes. And when you're doing fucking around with this piece of shit OS that refuses to do simple things like "playing audio", `dd` will restore Windows right back to where it was as if Ubuntu never existed in the first place.
Thanks, `dd`. I wish you were on Windows. Your OS is the LEAST user friendly thing I've ever had to deal with.31 -

First day on the job. Get Windows 10 laptop. Ask if I can use Ubuntu.
"Well everyone else is using it so I don't see why not"
So. Much. Win!!!11 -
Me and co-worker troubleshooting why he can't run the docker container for database.
Me: Check if the port is busy.
Co-worker: To my knowledge, it isn't.
Me: Strange, it just works fine for me and everyone else.
Me: And you're sure you didn't already start it previously?
*We verify that it isn't running*
Me: I'm pretty sure the port is busy from that error message. Try another port.
Co-worker: Already did, it didn't work.
Me: And by any chance restarting your machine won't solve anything?
*It doesn't solve anything*
Me: Alright, I have some work to do, but I'll get back to this. Tell me if you find a solution.
Co-worker: Alright.
*** Time passes, when I get back he has switched to windows, dualboot, same machine ***
Me: I don't think you'll have a better time running the docker image on windows.
Co-worker: Oh, that's not what I'm looking for. You see, I had a database on my windows partition recently and I thought maybe thats why it won't start.
Me (screaming internally) : WTF ARE YOU STUPID, WINDOWS AND LINUX ISNT RUNNING AT THE SAME FUCKING TIME.
Me (actually saying): I don't think computers work like that.
Co-worker: My computer is magical. It does strange things.
Me: That's a logical conclusion.
*** More time passes ***
Co-worker solves the problem. The port was busy because Ubuntu was already running PostgreSQL on that port.
Third co-worker shimes in: Oh yeah, I had the exact same problem and it took me a long time to solve it.
Everyone is sitting in arms reach of each other.
So not only was I right from the start. Someone else heard this whole conversation and didn't chime in with his solution. And the troubleshooting step of booting into windows and looking if a database is running there ???? Wtf
Why was I put on this Earth?6 -
Moving up in the world (replaced my old Windows 7 machine's OS with Ubuntu so I can get familiar with Linux)22

jim:"wat?"
me:"linux"
jim:"well... " +sigh + "that's your problem right there! this works to everyone else. and they're on windows. why would you ever not use windows?"
me:"have you ever tried anythig else?"
jim:"never needed to. windows works just fine.."
me:"well... does your computer ever freeze?"
jim:"constantly"
me:"that doesn't happen on ubuntu. at least it is quite rare"
jim:"nah... you're mistaken. windows rocks! anyway, you should probably talk to someone who knows ubuntu cause my chrome works just fine so it must be this ubuntu of yours.."14 -

What the fuck..?
What was the command for that old init again.. >_<
# /etc/init.d/ssh restart
WHY THE FUCK IS THIS UBUNTU STILL USING THAT OLD INIT?!! Goddamit, Canonical living up to the philosophy of its Debian counterpart indeed!11 -
I thought there was something wrong with my Ubuntu 16.04.
Whenever I pressed '|'

I totally gave up until I realised I mistakenly chose the UK Keyboard.

I love Linux, but its community can be so full of incompetent assholes..
Just now I asked in Freenode ##linux how to get the process ID of my current running process in bash. I got my answer - it's a shell built-in called "$$".
Then people start to nitpick some more - why do you need it? How is that different from an exit? - to which my response was.. well I know the whole idea behind exit codes, and I'd use it whenever possible, in all defined behavior that allows my program to terminate itself whenever it can. This pidfile however would be used to exit itself and provide diagnostic information whenever the program enters undefined behavior - a segfault in C language. Scenarios in which I don't have full control over the script's behavior anymore, such as the system entering an unworkable state where the system stalled, still got some binaries in RAM but the rootfs got unwritable, such as now - very helpfully, thanks HP! - when my laptop likely overheated and shat itself. I issued sudo reboot into it, but even that wouldn't issue properly anymore due to the /sbin/poweroff binary becoming inaccessible too. I had to issue a hard power cycle.. one of the few times in which I'm thankful to HP for actually causing shit like this, lol.
Point is, that undefined behavior is what I'm trying to mitigate against. I certainly can't let any files other than diagnostics remain in nonvolatile storage like that, especially when their state should be predictable in order to ensure good operation (like files expressing whether the script is already running or not, i.e. lock files).
Back to that IRC chat. Aside from the answer, I got ridicule from people who probably don't even know how to properly compile a kernel. Ubuntu users, overconfident scum. Sometimes I feel like I should ask questions in channels like #archlinux only, where such incompetency is ridiculed on its own.13 -
Dear windows 10
I won't mind a weekly 30 minutes update but...
My ubuntu connects to wifi in 2 seconds
My lubuntu connects to wifi in 2 seconds
My archlinux connects in 1 second(don't ask why)
My raspbian starts up and connects in 10 seconds
WHY WOULD YOU TAKE MORE THAN A SYSTEMS BOOTING PROCESS TO GET CONNECTED?12 -
PM has decided to learn linux. Today he asked me if "downloading" linux would make it so he can't use windows anymore.
I ended up sending him a link on how to use the ubuntu shell on windows. Then about half an hour later he asked me why he couldn't type to enter his password. This should be fun...8 -

Reminds me of robocopy. That shit required me to tell it 25 times what to do and it'd still not do it right as well. And you know what, compared to rsync where -avz works 99% of the time, I hate it.7 -
I signed up for a 3 day course on c++ for revision purposes since I haven't used it in years, it was there, so why not.
So we get an email about having to install linux mint beforehand. Naturally, having ubuntu installed, i just ask if I can roll with that. And the answer is:
"Yes you just need to install the compiler, but then you won't get the credit point for the course, since you have not completed all tasks."
And an instruction was attached innthe general email on to how to create a bootable usb stick with windows and set up the partition (!) for a dualboot system for like 10 gigs of linux.
Bruh.
Da fuq.
I'm coming for the c++ not the linux. Also how do you think I've got ubuntu running in the first place? I get it the course is for beginners probably but still.
Also, after reading the instructions and knowing Windows 10 i can see bootloader issues incoming...
Was looking forward to that course now I'm not so sure. 🤔
(Sidenote: i don't care about the point I could get ftom this)10 -
It's march, I'm in my final year of university. The physics/robotics simulator I need for my major project keeps running into problems on my laptop running Ubuntu, and my supervisor suggests installing Mint as it works fine on that.
I backup what's important across a 4GB and a 16GB memory stick. All I have to do now is boot from the mint installation disk and install from there. But no, I felt dangerous. I was about to kill anything I had, so why not `sudo rm -rf /*` ? After a couple seconds it was done. I turned it off, then back on. I wanted to move my backups to windows which I was dual booting alongside Ubuntu.
No OS found. WHAT. Called my dad, asked if what I thought happened was true, and learnt that the root directory contains ALL files and folders, even those on other partitions. Gone was the past 2 1/2 years of uni work and notes not on the uni computers and the 100GB+ other stuff on there.
At least my current stuff was backed up.
TL;DR : sudo rm -rf /* because I'm installing another Linux distro. Destroys windows too and 2 1/2 years of uni work.13 -
I'm a DevOps engineer. It's my job to understand why this type of shit is broken, and when I finally figure it out, I get so mad at bullish players like AWS.
It's simple. Install Python3 from apt.
`apt-get update && apt-get install -y python3-dev`
I've done this thousands of times, and it just works.
Docker? Yup.
AWS AMI? Yup.
Automation? Nope.
WTF? Let's waste 2.5 hours and figure out why this morning.
In docker: `apt-cache policy python3-dev` shows us:
python3-dev:
http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu focal/main amd64 Packages
But in AWS instance, we see we're reading from "http://us-east-1.ec2.archive.ubuntu.com/... focal/main" instead!
Ah, but why does it fail? AWS is just using a mirror, right? Not quite.
When the automation script is running, it's beating AWS to the apt mirror update! My instance, running on AWS is trying to access the same archive.ubuntu.com that the Docker container tried to use. "python3-dev" was not a candidate for installation! WTF Amazon? Shouldn't that just work, even if I'm not using your mirror?
So I try again, and again, and again. It works, on average, 1 out of every 5 times. I'm assuming this means we're seeing some strange shit configuration between EC2 racks where some are configured to redirect archive.ubuntu.com to the ec2 mirror, and others are configured to block. I haven't dug this far into the issue yet, because by the time I can SSH into the machine after automation, the apt list has already received it's blessed update from EC2.
Now I have to build a graceful delay into my automation while I wait for AWS to mangle, I mean "fix up" my apt sources list to their whim.
After completely blowing my allotted time on this task, I just shipped a "sleep" statement in my code. I feel so dirty. I'm going to go brew some more coffee to be okay with my life. Then figure out a proper wait statement.7 -
I just installed Ubuntu on my old laptop and Jesus that terminal is just amazing. Now I see why GUI is for noobs.8
-
Okay.. I just did it. I had to reinitialize a server because I lost the single SSH keypair (probably the one from my BELOVED Windoze desktop that I recently had to reinstall) that was authorized to access the server, and I didn't add any of the other clients' keys to the server's authorized_keys.
Note to self: replicate all your fucking keys or (or rather, and) back them the fuck up into your keychain already!! Why else does that keychain USB stick exist, Condor, you bloody fucking moron?!!
Well, at least now the admin panel on Aruba Cloud doesn't say "Ubuntu 14.04" that's been upgraded to Ubuntu 18.04 anymore, but 18.04 as it should.. but that's about the only good thing.13 -
This is what I get for wanting to try Arch Linux again.... I even followed a guide so that I don't mess up. 😑 Fuck you Arch Linux and your complicatedness. And fuck you too brain for being Arch Linux dumb.20

Time to move my mailserver!
I am having an inner struggle about what distro/OS to use:
Debian
CentOS
Ubuntu
FreeBSD
OpenBSD
What should I use? Why?41 -
Spent 1 hour 30 minutes trying to figure out why the Laptop's WIFI connection was not working on Ubuntu.
Realized it had a LAN plugged in connected to my desktop.
Pull my hair one by one please.
Shouldn't linux be intelligent enough to use the network adapter which has internet access?5 -
Does linux suck? Imho, Yes.
A lot of the people bash windows regarding automatic restarts, updates, bsod etc.
I may be unusually lucky, but the last bsod I saw was in 2014 because of a faulty synaptics driver.
I've really tried to use linux to see what the hype is all about. Quite frankly, it sucked. The first time it wiped out all my data, I realized the value of backups. Hence I do not have a single pic of my school now, thanks to complicated ubuntu mounting.
Next is driver support. When I plug in a device, I expect it to work. I don't want to spend a day googling for drivers.
Why the fuck would I want to use a black terminal which gives me a headache. Am I in 1980? Which sadistic asshole designed vim ?
I have seen linux developers who claim to be linux experts and love linux. They take so long to do simple shit. For god's sake don't tell me there are GUI versions of linux available. I'd rather work in windows 95.
Why in the world would anyone want to use ls to see the contents of a directory! It is seriously so fucking unproductive.
I can't just download a software, click next a couple of times, and be done. No no no. I've to do sudo apt get update. Then try to find the fucking package. And if all goes well, there's always the dependency issue which is going to bite me in the ass. If google and stackoverflow go down, most linux devs will die a cruel death.
Fuck you linux.
I'm not saying windows 10 is the best, but at least I don't have to crawl through shit to use it. If you don't like automatic updates, disable it you moron. It is easier than renaming a damn file in linux.57 -
Me *setting up some coding environments via the terminal in Ubuntu Budgie*
Some random person next to me: Sorry to interrupt, but what you're doing looks very fascinating. What is it?
Me *tries to explain it as simple as possible*
Person: I didn't know you could do that on Windows! What version are you running?
Me *explains about Linux, dies inside*
Person: but why don't you just use Windows? This sounds too complicated
*friend calls after me, have to leave, saved*2 -
What is your story of your first encounter with a Linux Distro?
Here's mine (Slight long version) –
Back in my 8th grade I used to buy Tech magazines that used to have DVDs filled with random updated contents like Audio/Video tools, Wallpapers and other stuff. There used to be this "Linux Distro of the Month" section that I used to ignore because I didn't know what it is.
But one issue of the magazine had a review of this "amazing new" Ubuntu 10.10. I read it and at first I thought it's some kind of theme for Windows (I know). But then I tried it out on my HP Compaq nx6120 which had a pure BIOS. No UEFI shit. Ubuntu came with it's wubi installer and it installed Ubuntu smoothly like a normal software. Later I discovered that it is a completely different operating system that doesn't run anything from my Windows. I was upset about it and I booted back to Windows.
But I never removed it. I felt like exploring what it was and why people use it.
It's almost 9 years later and I'm so glad with what had happened back then.11 -
Did a bunch more cowboy coding today as I call it (coding in vi on production). Gather 'round kiddies, uncle Logan's got a story fer ya…
First things first, disclaimer: I'm no sysadmin. I respect sysadmins and the work they do, but I'm the first to admit my strengths definitely lie more in writing programs rather than running servers.
Anyhow, I recently inherited someone else's codebase (the story of my profession career, but I digress) and let me tell you this thing has amateur hour written all over it. It's written in PHP and JavaScript by a self-taught programmer who apparently discovered procedural programming and decided there was nothing left to learn and stopped there (no disrespect to self-taught programmers).
I could rant for days about the various problems this codebase has, but today I have a very specific story to tell. A story about errors and logs.
And it all started when I noticed the disk space on our server was gradually decreasing.
So today I logged onto our API server (Ubuntu running Apache/PHP) and did a df -h to check the disk space, and was surprised to see that it had noticeably decreased since the last time I'd checked when everything was running smoothly. But seeing as this server does not store any persistent customer data (we have a separate db server) and purely hosts the stateless API, it should NOT be consuming disk space over time at all.
The only thing I could think of was the logs, but the logs were very quiet, just the odd benign message that was fully expected. Just to be sure I did an ls -Sh to check the size of the logs, and while some of them were a little big, nothing over a few megs. Nothing to account for gigabytes of disk space gradually disappearing.
What could it be? I wondered.
cd ../..
du . | sort --sort=numeric
What's this? 2671132 K in some log folder buried in the api source code? I cd into it and it turns out there are separate PHP log files in there, split up by customer, so that each customer of ours (we have 120) has their own respective error log! (Why??)
Armed with this newfound piece of (still rather unbelievable) evidence I perform a mad scramble to search the codebase for where this extra logging is happening and sure enough I find a custom PHP error handler that is capturing (most) errors and redirecting them to these individualized log files.
Conveniently enough, not ALL errors were being absorbed though, so I still knew the main error_log was working (and any time I explicitly error_logged it would go there, so I was none the wiser that this other error-catching was even happening).
Needless to say I removed the code as quickly as I found it, tail -f'd the error_log and to my dismay it was being absolutely flooded with syntax errors, runtime PHP exceptions, warnings galore, and all sorts of other things.
My jaw almost hit the floor. I've been with this company for 6 months and had no idea these errors were even happening!
The sad thing was how easy to fix all the errors ended up being. Most of them were "undefined index" errors that could have been completely avoided with a simple isset() check, but instead ended up throwing an exception, nullifying any code that came after it.
Anyway kids, the moral of the story is don't split up your log files. It makes absolutely no sense and can end up obscuring easily fixable bugs for half a year or more!
Happy coding.6 -
So, I decided to post this based on @Morningstar's conundrum.
I'm dissatisfied with the laptop market.
Why THE FUCK should I have to buy a gaming laptop with a GTX 1070 or 1080 to get a decent amount of RAM and a fucking great processor?
I don't game. I program. I don't even own a fucking Steam library, for clarification. Never have I ever bought a game on Steam. Disproving the notion that I might have a games library out of the way, I run Linux. Antergos (Arch-based) is my daily driver.
So, in 2017 I went on a laptop hunt. I wanted something with decent specs. Ultimately ended up going with the system76 Galago Pro (which I love the form factor of, it's nice as hell and people recognize the brand for some fucking reason). Matter of fact, one of my profs wanted to know how I accessed our LMS (Blackboard) and I showed him Chromium....his mind was blown: "Ir's not just text!"
That aside, why the fuck are Dell and system76 the only ones with decent portables geared towards developers? I hate the prospect of having to buy some clunky-ass Republic of Gamers piece of shit just to have some sort of decent development machine...
This is a notice to OEMs: yall need to quit making shit hardware and gaming hardware with no mid-range compromise. Shit hardware is defined as the "It runs Excel and that's all the consumer needs" and gaming hardware is "Let's put fucking everything in there - including a decent processor, RAM, and a GTX/Radeon card."
Mid-range that is true - good hardware that handles video editing and other CPU/RAM-intensive tasks and compiling and whatnot but NOT graphics-intensive shit like gaming - is hard to come by. Dell offers my definition of "mid-range" through Sputnik's Ubuntu-powered XPS models and what have you, and system76 has a couple of models that I more or less wish I had money for but don't.
TBH I don't give two fucks about the desktop market. That's a non-issue because I can apply the logic that if you want something done right, do it yourself: I can build a desktop. But not a laptop - at least not in a feasible way.23 -
When every ubuntu based distro fails, from kubuntu to xubuntu, lubunto, mint etc.
You will always have Linux Lite. How the fuck this thing manages to keep 2 vs code editors opened as well as firefox and chrome at the sime time while at 3.55g mem(according to htop) without fucking up?
Good engineering, das how. Kudos to my ninjas at the Linux Lite team. This is why I recommend this distro to anyone wanting to go Linux. Good for the beginner and the working professional alike(I use it for work)4 -

Been waiting for 30 minutes. Why did I even consider dual booting along side Ubuntu. Should have just kept Ubuntu.5

After two weeks with Ubuntu - I'm done with this. I'm going back to Windows.
Why? Well, it fixes some Windows problems, but at the same time new ones are popping and they are even bloody worse.10 -
About 3 years ago, my girlfriend had this laptop that she got from her University. She had to give the laptop back to get reset, but didn't want to lose all of her data on it, and a backup would be around 750GB.
So I suggested that I would backup the laptop (was thinking to just dd an image and go from there). So I plugged in my mobile USB and external hard drive, and started the imaging process. Given the amount of data and setup, the process should have taken about 5hours. So we left it there for 5h.
Please be mindful that at this stage in my life I knew very little about boot processes, oses, and hardware.
5h after. The laptop screen is black and it ain't responsive. Not sure what happened, the dd process was completed, but the laptop refused to boot into windows. Tried a number of boot tools, and spent a crazy night hacking at the machine. But the university had some of sort of fail safe to not allow anyone to boot into windows if someone opened bios without entering a password. Whatever this was, I spent over 12h trying to either open mount the windows partition with a Ubuntu usb or mount the corrupt dd image on my laptop.
Long story short, after throwing at it a number of fixes. I was able to mount the image, copy out all of her personal data, and reinstall a new version of Windows on her laptop. The university didnt understand why the laptop was already reset. She still mentions this to me anytime I want to take a "custom approach" to software lol2 -
The ones who use it, what do you like or value about Linux? Why do you use it?
Before I answer, let me say that I am a noob compared to the rest of this community. I run Ubuntu because Arch was too complicated when I tried and bash scripts equal to frustrations for me. That's my knowledge level.
- I don't feel "observed" when using a Linux distro compared to Windows and macOS.
- Feel more connected to the open source thought and the free spirit.
- Feel like I can do anything I want. Learning new programming languages easily, trying out web servers, try and setup own website or mail server etc.
- Everything is accessible. Read something cool about docker? ALT+T to open a terminal and start up a docker container to try out.
- No Internet browsing for software, like googling "Firefox download english".
- Sometimes forces me to learn about the workings of a computer, like networks, servers, routing, firewalls, bootup sequence etc.
- So many great command line tools. Want to find out quickly who owns a website? Want to query a specific DNS server? All possible within 5 seconds!
All in all using Linux feels like watching a documentary while using Windows is more like watching a dumb comedy show where I can turn my brain off, but get more stupid after a while.6 -
I bought a Thinkpad E470 laptop for my wife' bday. Because she loves Linux, My first obvious choice was a Thinkpad. I chose the model from Ubuntu Certified Laptop list and installed Ubuntu 16.04 (Based on their recommendation)
now:
THE FUCKING UBUNTU IS UNABLE TO DETECT WI-FI ADAPTOR. LIKE WHAT THE FUCK YOU WERE THINKING WHEN YOU PUT THE LAPTOP MODEL ON THAT FUCKING STUPID LIST? I WANT TO EXACTLY UNDERSTAND WHAT THE FUCK YOU WERE THINKING AND WHY YOU UPGRADED YOUR FUCKING KERNEL WITHOUT REVIEWING YOUR FUCKING LIST?
AND I WANT TO KNOW WHAT THE FUCK LENOVO THOUGHT WHEN THEY RECOMMEND UBUNTU. WHY THEY STILL SELL THIS SHIT BASED ON THINKPAD' REPUTATION AND WHY THEY STILL SUGGEST THIS IS A LAPTOP FOR DEVELOPERS? NO THIS FUCKING SHITHOLE IS NOT FOR ME. IT'S DESIGNED FOR MASTERBATION WITHOUT INTERNET! BECAUSE IT'S NOT ABLE TO CONNECT TO INTERNET! YOUR MOTHER FUCKERS.

This is why I hate Windows:
For about a month now, I've been learning/working on salesforce, so my Macbook was enough for me.
Today there was a bug in something I built in iur Python backend, and since it has a dependency on windows, I booted the old guy up.
And this is what I see. For about 1.5 hours this went on.
Then it started, but system consuming 100% disk and 80+% CPU. Can't do a thing.
And when zoom finally opened (for a quick meet), the camera turned on halfway down the meeting, and then the system restarted on it's own.
Old man showing that same screen again for more than 30 minutes.
Since I have dual boot on this one, I hard-shutdown it using power button, and now boot into ubuntu 20. This works so beautifully (although it froze for about 5 seconds before popping up the updates panel, something I CHOSE to keep enabled). I try going back to Windows, and it's hell again.
Here I am now trying to set up a ec2 instance and setup the app source there so that I can debug with RDP.
And yeah, Component Object Model is a motherfucking bitch. Person who invented it should die. People who build apps leveraging this should die. Business leaders who say "Hey this app (built with COM) can solve the problem easily, so use this" should die choking on their own phallus. And developers like me who keep using this because "the last guy did this" should die too.
Microsoft and it's products are the death of sane people.
Fucking Gates. Its the same damn hardware.13 -
And then I thought why not turn my resume into something weird and nerdy. And the result is this, a web app which looks like a terminal and connects to an actual Ubuntu terminal. It's not great, but it's something. 😃

"Did you really buy a macbook to put ubuntu on it?"
"Wow why would you use such an overpriced piece of garbage just to put linux on it?'
"You made the worst choice of hardware to put ubuntu on"
Maybe, just maybe, I didn't fucking buy it myself and I got it from work? Maybe I didn't fucking pay a dime to get a laptop to put ubuntu on it? Ever considered that I got it for fucking free and have the privilege to do what I want with it?
Go fuck yourself if your first assumption is that I would actually buy a macbook just to erase MacOS from it12 -
Tried mx 17 linux today. Was completely blown away by how fucking good the system is. I am really tempted to nuke my windows installation in one of my computers and just run this baby from it. Nothing is really holding me back from it. I already have two other macs and another ubuntu laptop. Can think of a reason why i would need windows at this time but i am still hesitant.
Plus...i am taking on a big rails project.....might be good to have this thing set up for it as are the other two macs. Mmmmmhmm decissions decissions.
What do y'all think? Yes or nah?4 -
Tl:dr Guy acts like a moron and is useless in group tasks.
In my class there is this one guy, that I'll just call carl. Now Carl do some stuff that irritates me, but is harmless. Things like repeat the answer he get's every time he asks a question. I fucking hate it, but it's okay. He also says some pretty stupid stuff. Like today when he asked why Ubuntu started when he turned on a computer, the guy next to him simply said because it's installed while I facepalmed.
Carl does even worse things than that. I was asked to work with Carl on a group task.
Now I hate talking in front of people, so we decided that I would do the writing and he would speak to the rest of the class.
I made a word document containing what he had to say, but we also wanted a PowerPoint presentation to make it look better and so the other could get read the basics on what we we were presenting.
Carl decided that he could create the PowerPoint presentation, and I thought why not. The thing I didn't expect was that Carl would install Ubuntu on his laptop, without saving the presentation somewhere else. In other words HE FUCKING DELETED IT.
But it's fine he could just create it using a program that isn't PowerPoint. OH WAIT OF COURSE CARL FOUND A WAY TO TO FUCK THIS. The next time we had that subject he came without his laptop (we use our laptops in all our courses) because he managed to make it unusable, although he fixed it a few days later.
At that point I said fuck it and created the presentation myself.
At this point I didn't trust Carl with anything sharper than a spoon and decided, against our previous, plans to present it with him. Now I sent him the Word and PowerPoint documents so he would now what to say and what the class was going to see.
THIS GUY DECIDED TO JUST READ WORD FOR WORD OF THE POWERPOINT AKA NOT THE THING I ASKED HIM TO DO. So half the the time it was me going into slight detail about advertisement on the net and how people finding your company on google helps to sell products, AND THE OTHER WAS HIM SAYING A FEW WORDS. JESUS CHRIST, Carl basically didn't do shit yet he acted like he did. That's something that really makes me mad.2 -
Got ncmpcpp/cava/mpd working! (if you're wondering why it's ubuntu, just read a few rants ago :'^> ) and loving it. i gues i'll just open this up for people to post rices or any sort of pretty config. i still shill arch, just not if you like steam and have an nvidia graphics card! i'm in school and i don't really have time to sit down and learn what i broke and how to fix it, even if its a minor issue.8

While I was working on a university project with my team, a teammate asked me why the window of the program in my screen was bigger than in his. I simply answered him that his screen was a FullHD one that had a 1920x1080 resolution, while mine had a lower resolution, and he was like "Noo! This isn't a fullhd screen, it's not so sharp".
So I showed him the "1920x1080" sticker right below his screen, and him again "Yeah, it could have this resolution but definitely it's not a FullHD screen".
- Ok, as you say...
The same guy two days ago was talking about creating a GUI in C.
I told him that C was the wrong language to build programs with a GUI, although there's some very old libs that allow you to do that in 16bit.
And him again: "Ok but Linux (distros) do that and the UIs are great!"
- Do you think that all the fucking Ubuntu/Mint/any distro code is written in C??
The funny thing is the arrogance with which he says all these bullshits.
P. S. We are attending the 3rd year of Computer Engineering.6 -
Bought a new 4TB disk for my gaming rig, pulled out the old 1TB one and plugged it back on my old machine. Installed Ubuntu Server. Instalation went well after I figured I needed the IOMMU turned on.
Later went to play some BfA on the gaming rig and... No boot disk recognized. Ahn?
My SSD is plugged in. SATA cable is well seated. Thing was working not 30min before...
After a loooong time trying to figure out if it was hardware or micro$hit's Windows 10, I finally figured it:
It seems Windows installed its EFI partition on the old HDD. So my SSD is basically a single, large NTFS volume. Now I need to download the Win10 ISO, boot up the install disk and use the cmd prompt to create a new EFI partition on my SSD. Ugh.
Fucking Windows didn't think to install its boot manager on its own disk. "Nah, just gonna use this random magnetic disk here". Why? My login queues are already huge on WoW, why must this wankstain of an OS annoy me even more?3 -
Why the fuck is android studio such an unoptimized POS?
It sucks up resources like a sponge.
And Gradle just pushes the cores to the max.

You know what, let me jump in on the "I hate PHP" bandwagon.
A couple months ago I upgraded my mail servers unattended. Roundcube got fucked for a couple of months, and I figured.. fuck it, I can still use Dovecot for authenticating with desktop mail clients like K-9.
Recently I unfucked it, turns out that it was an issue with the sock file in php-fpm. That's also when I noticed that PHP apparently hardcodes in its current version in the bloody socket file. Because why the fuck wouldn't you? It makes upgrades so much fucking easier!!! Said no fucking sysadmin ever!!!
And today I upgraded one of my mail servers to Ubuntu Server 18.04, finally, after a lot of hesitation. Bad decision, because now PHP got fucked YET AGAIN.
Again an issue with socket files? I have no fucking idea. systemctl shows no failed services (because you know PHP, why would you fail your service with an error message instead of throwing a meaningless 502 Bad Gateway, right?!!) and looking at the config files, well the socket file got its new php-fpm 7.2 file (still got the fucking version number hardcoded in) and thus I changed that socket file location in /etc/php/7.0...
devRant may just have been my rubber duck.
WHY THE FUCK DO YOU STINKING FUCKING PILE OF SHIT CALLED FUCKING PHP KEEP THE FUCKING 7.0 DIRECTORY OUT THERE WHEN YOU'VE UPGRADED, WITHOUT EVEN HAVING THE FUCKING BALLS TO RENAME THE MOTHERFUCKING DIRECTORY TO 7.2, IF YOU'RE GOING TO HARDCODE IN YOUR VERSION NUMBERS ANYWAY?!!!!!
Bloody fucking pile of fucking junk!!!!18 -
Today I learned that docker makes all ports publicly available by default on Ubuntu servers using UFW.
Why? Because for some reason docker bypasses the UFW and has done so since 2014.
Thinking about this, I'm a bit irritated to say the least. Infuriated about such reckless behavior would be another reaction.
Anyhow, in case you have docker running on some forgotten Ubuntu server without a dedicated FW/VPN see https://github.com/chaifeng/... for more details.11 -
Why does Ubuntu get so much hate on here?
Is it because people believe it doesn’t act according to the spirit of the Linux community (whatever that is) or are their technical reasons?16 -
Inspired by @NoMad. My philosophy is that technology is a means to and ends. We’re a tool oriented species. As it relates to software and hardware, they should be your means to achieve your ends without you needing to think. Think of riding a bicycle or driving a car. You aren’t particularly conscious of them - you just adjust input based on heuristics and reflex - while your doing the activity.
For a long time Software has been horrendously bad at this. There is almost always some setup involved; you need to front-load a plan to get to your ends. Funny enough we’re in the good days now. In the early days of GUI you did have to switch modes to achieve different things until input peripherals got better.
I’ve been using windows from 95 and to this day, though it’s gotten better it’s not trivial to setup an all in one printer and scan a document - just yesterday I had to walk my mother through it and she’s somewhat proficient. Also when things break it’s usually nightmare to fix, which is why fresh installing it periodically is s meme to this day. MS still goes to great lengths with their UI so that most people can still get most of their daily stuff done without a manual.
I started Linux in University when I was offered an intro course on the shell. I’ve been using it professionally ever since. While it’s good at making you feel powerful, it requires intricate knowledge to achieve most things. Things almost never go smoothly no matter how much practice you have, especially if you need to compile tools from source. It also has very little in the ways of safe guards to prevent you from hurting yourself. Sure you might be able to fix it if you press harder but it’s less stress to just fresh install. There is also nothing, NOTHING more frustrating than following documentation to the T and it just doesn’t work! It is my day job to help companies with exactly this. Can’t really give an honest impression of the GUI ux as the distros have varying schools of thoughts with their desktop environments. Even The popular one Ubuntu did weird things for a while. In my humble opinion, *nix is better at powering the internet than being a home computer your grandma can use.
Now after being in the thick of things, priorities change and you really just want to get things done. In 2015 I made the choice to go Mac. It has been one of my more interesting experiences. Honestly, I wish more distros would adopt its philosophy. Elementary only adopted the dock. It’s just so intuitive. How do you install an application? You tap the installer, a box will pop up then you drag the icon to the application folder (in the same box) boom you are done. No setup wizards. How to uninstall? Drag icon from app folder to trash can. Boom done. How to open your app? Tap launch pad and you see all your apps alphabetically just click the one you want. You can keep your frequent ones on the dock. Settings is just another app in launchpad and everything is well labeled. You can even use your printers scanner without digging through menus. You might have issues with finder if your used to windows though and the approach to maximizing and minimizing windows will also get you for a while.
When my Galaxy 4 died I gave iPhone a chance with the SE. I can tell you that for most use cases, there is no discernible difference between iOS and modern android outside of a few fringe features. What struck me though was the power of an ecosystem. My Mac and iPhone just work well together. If they are on the same network they just sync in the background - you need to opt in. My internet went down, my iMac saw that my iPhone had 4g and gave me the option to connect. One click your up. Similar process with s droid would be multi step. You have airdrop which just allows you to send files to another Apple device near you with a tap without you even caring what mechanism it’s using. After google bricked my onHub router I opted to get Apples airport series. They are mostly interchangeable and your Mac and iOS device have a native way to configure it without you needing to mess with connecting to it yourself and blah. Setup WiFi on one device, all your other Apple devices have it. Lots of other cool stuff happen as you add more Apple devices. My wife now as a MacBook, an IPad s d the IPhone 8. She’s been windows android her life but the transition has been sublime. With family sharing any software purchase works for all of us, and not just apples stuff like iCloud and music, everything.
Hate Apple all you want but they get the core tenet that technology should just work without you thinking. That’s why they are the most valued company in the world14 -
tl;dr version: I now hate Windows.
<background>
I installed Ubuntu in dual boot on my PC and I was sceptical.
After one month everything is working perfectly. I'm loving this OS although I still am not an expert, and I doubt I'll ever go back to Windows.
</background>
Now. Today at school we were drawing using a CAD software and, for no reason at all, Windows crashed. This is not a terrible thing, as I usually save often, but this time it also corrupted the file and I had to start from scratch again!
Why Windows, why?4 -
One of the many reasons why I like Linux more than Windows, yesterday I upgraded from Ubuntu 17.04 to 18.04 and it didn't need to restart. In fact updates in general only rarely require a restart, and it never forces them upon me9
-
Ransomware has the effect to destroying data and my will to live.
I come in to work yesterday to see everyone panicking. We got hit by WannaCry. The boss is with IT dealing with it and sends all of us home. No biggie, since all of my work data is backed up on an offsite server.
I come back into work to still see everyone in a frenzy. I think they are still overreacting to the attack, so I go to my corner in the office. I boot up to see the Ubuntu logo, which is a huge problem, not for me of course, but for everyone else who can barely work Windows. I barge in on my boss and ask him why the fuck is Ubuntu on the PC's.
He replies, "I looked it up, Linux is not affected by viruses".
What the fuck is wrong with people? After I tell him to revert back to Windows because he's being a fucking retard, he goes ahead to send all of us home.
I can only hope he doesn't install Zorin or Elementary because I will quit.6 -
Oh god! Why did I change to Ubuntu!!! This machine is running hotter and slower!!! Battery drains faster than ever!
There's no going back to windows 10... looking back, I love windows 10 despite its faults :')
Did anyone else experience the same? First thing I'm doing in the morning is install arch linux10 -
Ubuntu (probably) fucked up some upgrade and I wasn't able to use lvfs anymore. (damned meltdown/spectre bug) so... I figured it'd be a "good" idea to reinstall dbus. well.. the alternative was reinstalling Ubuntu so I figured I could at least try. obviously it didn't work out.. at all.
sooo here's me thinking I'll just insert my live media and live on with my life. nope. the fucking live media is corrupt. so, here I am now, contemplating why I was such an idiot.2 -
I'm a fan of Linux, and have used many distros (arch, ubuntu, debian, fedora, mint, centos, rhl) and many desktop environments (KDE, Gnome, Cinnamon, xfce, Enlightenment) before asking this question.
But every single one of these desktop environments always have felt slow to respond in some cases, where I click something and it doesn't open/close immediately, or i double click something but it fails to open or select something. basically I'm not confident my actions on the GUI will have guaranteed, quick responses within reasonable time. I've never ever had this issue with Microsoft OSes (keeping aside the many badly coded softwares which hang or crash). I'm not talking about specific softwares, this is just general usage of opening settings and using the file manager, window menus.
I'm pretty sure my hardware is not the issue. I've run everything on the same rig. And this has always kept me from fully committing myself to a Linux distro. But I can never be sure about display drivers, as they're not identical. But the issues in Linux has been noted by me for many years. So I doubt it's the drivers either.
Is there anybody who agrees with me and know why Linux is the way it is like that, or is this just me facing this annoyance?13 -
20 minutes into working with stock ubuntu 18.04 and instantly remembered why I don't use stock ubuntu... It's so fucking sluggish and bloated!9
-
Today I spent several hours arguing with a client. Why? Because she's seeing an error on her website, and no matter how many times I explain to her that she's the only one seeing a css misalignment that was fixed this morning, and that she should clear the browser's cache or just use a different one, she refuses to understand that it's not my fault and that the website that's in production is working just fine for her users.
FFS I tested the same thing on Firefox Chrome, chromium, edge and even fucking IE8 on as many OSs as I can, namely Windows 7, Windows 10, Debian, Ubuntu, Android and OSX.
WHY DO YOU KEEP BLAMING ME FOR YOUR BROWSERS CACHE. SHUT THE FUCK UP AND ACCEPT YOU WERE WRONG FOR THE FIRST TIME IN YOUR LIFE.
Uffff, that feels better.2 -
That's it, where do I send the bill, to Microsoft? Orange highlight in image is my own. As in ownly way to see that something wasn't right. Oh but - Wait, I am on Linux, so I guess I will assume that I need to be on internet explorer to use anything on microsoft.com - is that on the site somewhere maybe? Cause it looks like hell when rendered from Chrome on Ubuntu. Yes I use Ubuntu while developing, eat it haters. FUCK.
This is ridiculous - I actually WANT to use Bing Web Search API. I actually TRIED giving up my email address and phone number to MS. If you fail the I'm not a robot, or if you pass it, who knows, it disappears and says something about being human. I'm human. Give me free API Key. Or shit, I'll pay. Client wants to use Bing so I am using BING GODDAMN YOU.
Why am I so mad? BECAUSE THIS. Oauth through github, great alternative since apparently I am not human according to microsoft. Common theme w them, amiright?
So yeah. Let them see all my githubs. Whatever. Just GO so I can RELAX. Rate limit fuck shit workaround dumb client requirements google can eat me. Whats this, I need to show my email publicly? Verification? Sure just go. But really MS, this looks terrible. If I boot up IE will it look any better? I doubt it but who knows I am not looking at MS CSS. I am going into my github, making it public. Then trying again. Then waiting. Then verifying my email is shown. Great it is hello everyone. COME ON MS. Send me an email. Do something.
I am trying to be patient, but after a few minutes, I revoke access. Must have been a glitch. Go through it again, with public email. Same ugly almost invisible message. Approaching a billable hour in which I made 0 progress. So, lets just see, NO EMAIL from MS, Yes it appears in my GitHub, but I have no way to log into MS. Email doesnt work. OAuth isn't picking it up I guess, I don't even care to think this through.
The whole point is, the error message was hard to discover, seems to be inaccurate, and I can't believe the IRONY or the STUPIDITY (me, me stupid. Me stupid thinking I could get working doing same dumb thing over and over like caveman and rock).
Longer rant made shorter, I cant come up with a single fucking way to get a free BING API Key. So forget it MS. Maybe you'll email me tomorrow. Maybe Github was pretending to be Gitlab for a few minutes.
Maybe I will send this image to my client and tell him "If we use Bing, get used to seeing hard to read error messages like this one". I mean that's why this is so frustrating anyhow - I thought the Google CSE worked FINE for us :/ -
I've just wasted 2 hours trying to figure out why docker-compose was bugging out on some stupid error.
Turns out that the Ubuntu package was stuck on 1.5.2.
The current release is 1.24.1.
The package has not been updated since December 2015.
I need to stab a motherfucker1 -
Hi, my name is bohr and I'm a recovering distro hopper.
It all started with Ubuntu, out of my frustrations with the unintuitive nature of DOS I gravitated to a Unix environment which Ubuntu naturally solved. But I quickly became annoyed with the laggy nature of it's daily usage. So I switched to Linux mint. Loving the HTML/css/js configuration aspect of cinnamon I thought it was the answer to all my problems. But I became annoyed with apt and it's lack of a few programs I wanted. This got me to look into an arch based distro, because pacman seemed like the answer to my problems. Unfortunately there are way too many arch distros to use. I experimented with antegros' many DE options: gnome, kde, i3, deepin, openbox... Always finding something wrong. I tried manjaro and it's many flavors, still being annoyed with minute aspects of the os. Out of frustration, with the deep configuration settings I was getting into and the need to actually focus on the work being done on the computer I crawled back to Linux mint. But now my friends, I have decided that maybe it's time to just use a more established distro? Maybe gnome isn't actually that bad? Maybe I need to give it another try? And that is why, I promise, this is the last hop for me. Arch Linux, Gnome here I come and I'm ready to commit this time!...
But have you guys seen POP!_OS? Woah, I bet it would solve all of my problems....6 -
These ignorant comments about arch are starting to get on my nerves.
You ranted or asked help about something exclusive to windows and someone pointed out they don't have that problem in arch and now you're annoyed?
Well maybe it's for good.
Next comes a very rough analogy, but imagine if someone posts "hey guys, I did a kg of coke and feeling bad, how do I detox?"
It takes one honest asshole to be like "well what if you didn't do coke?".
Replace the coke with windows.
Windows is a (mostly) closed source operating system owned by a for profit company with a very shady legal and ethical history.
What on earth could possibly go wrong?
Oh you get bsod's?
The system takes hours to update whenever the hell it wants, forces reboot and you can't stop it?
oh you got hacked because it has thousands of vulnerabilities?
wannacry on outdated windows versions paralyzed the uk health system?
oh no one can truly scrutinize it because it's closed source?
yet you wonder why people are assholes when you mention it? This thing is fucking cancer, it's hundreds of steps backwards in terms of human progress.
and one of the causes for its widespread usage are the savage marketing tactics they practiced early on. just google that shit up.
but no, linux users are assholes out to get you.
and how do people react to these honest comments? "let's make a meme out of it. let's deligitimize linux, linux users and devs are a bunch of neckbeards, end of story, watch this video of rms eating skin off his foot on a live conference"
short minded idiots.
I'm not gonna deny the challenges or limitations linux represents for the end user.
It does take time to learn how to use it properly.
Nvidia sometimes works like shit.
Tweaking is almost universally required.
A huge amount of games, or Adobe/Office/X products are not compatible.
The docs can be very obscure sometimes (I for one hate a couple of manpages)
But you get a system that:
* Boots way faster
* Is way more stable
* Is way way way more secure.
* Is accountable, as in, no chance to being forced to get exploited by some evil marketing shit.
In other words, you're fucking free.
You can even create your own version of the system, with total control of it, even profit with it.
I'm not sure the average end user cares about this, but this is a developer forum, so I think in all honesty every developer owes open source OS' (linux, freebsd, etc) major respect for being free and not being corporate horseshit.
Doctors have a hippocratic oath? Well maybe devs should have some form of oath too, some sworn commitment that they will try to improve society.
I do have some sympathy for the people that are forced to use windows, even though they know ideally isn't the ideal moral choice.
As in, their job forces it, or they don't have time or energy to learn an alternative.
At the very least, if you don't know what you're talking about, just stfu and read.
But I don't have one bit of sympathy for the rest.
I didn't even talk about arch itself.
Holy fucking shit, these people that think arch is too complicated.
What in the actual fuck.
I know what the problem is, the arch install instructions aren't copy paste commands.
Or they medium tutorial they found is outdated.
So yeah, the majority of the dev community is either too dumb or has very strong ADD to CAREFULLY and PATIENTLY read through the instructions.
I'll be honest, I wouldn't expect a freshman to follow the arch install guide and not get confused several times.
But this is an intermediate level (not megaexpert like some retards out there imply).
Yet arch is just too much. That's like saying "omg building a small airplane is sooooo complicated". Yeah well it's a fucking aerial vehicle. It's going to be a bit tough. But it's nowhere near as difficult as building a 747.
So because some devs are too dumb and talk shit, they just set the bar too low.
Or "if you try to learn how to build a plane you'll grow an aviator neckbeard". I'll grow a fucking beard if I want too.
I'm so thankful for arch because it has a great compromise between control and ease of install and use.
When I have a fresh install I only get *just* what I fucking need, no extra bullshit, no extra programs I know nothing about or need running on boot time, and that's how I boot way faster that ubuntu (which is way faster than windows already).
Configuring nvidia optimus was a major pain in the ass? Sure was, but I got it work the way I wanted to after some time.
Upgrading is also easy as pie, so really scratching my brain here trying to understand the real difficult of using arch.22 -
Install 18.04 they said. It will be fine they said...
Well.
Apperently it hates my intel graphics card. It was giving me artifacts already during installation. It didnt boot after installation and got stuck on a purple screen with the mouse on it.
Got past that with recovery mode. Googled the solution snd they said "move mouse while booting" yeah that doesn't help.
It also didn't recognize the other monitors connected to it and since it comes without unity now everything was not where I'm used to look for it.
3 hours of grub mangleing, driver installing and a unity installation later, it finally works.
Installed terminator and oh, look, one of the most used short cuts is overwritten by some emoji pick bs.
Ffs.
Longest ubuntu installtion ever and it almost fked up the 16.04 aswell which is in dual boot atm.
And before someone says use Arch: ubuntu is a project requirement and Arch is not supported by the tools we need to use.12 -
This is a story of how I did a hard thing in bash:
I need to extract all files with extension .nco from a disk. I don't want to use the GUI (which only works on windows). And I don't want to install any new programs. NCO files are basically like zip files.
Problem 1: The file headers (or something) is broken and 7zip (7z) can only extract it if has .zip extension
Problem 2: find command gives me relative to the disk path and starts with . (a dot)
Solution: Use sed to delete dot. Use sed to convert to full path. Save to file. Load lines from file and for each one, cp to ~/Desktop/file.zip then && 7z e ~/Desktop/file.zip -oOutputDir (Extract file to OutputDir).
Problem 3: Most filenames contain a whitespace. cp doesn't work when given the path wrapped in quotes.
Patch: Use bash parameter substitution to change whitespace to \whitespace.
(Note: I found it easier to apply sed one after another than to put it all in one command)
Why the fuck would anyone compress 345 images into their own archive used by an uncommon windows-only paid back-up tool?
Little me (12 years old) knowing nothing about compression or backup or common software decided to use the already installed shitty program.
This is a big deal for me because it's really the first time I string so many cool commands to achieve desired results in bash (been using Ubuntu for half a year now). Funny thing is the images uncompressed are 4.7GB and the raw files are about 1.4GB so I would have been better off not doing anything at all.
Full command:
find -type f -name "*.nco" |
sed 's/\(^./\)/\1/' |
sed 's/.*/\/media\/mitiko\/2011-2014_1&/' > unescaped-paths.txt
cat unescaped-paths.txt | while read line; do echo "${line// /\\ }" >> escaped-paths.txt; done
rm unescaped-paths.txt
cat escaped-paths.txt | while read line; do (echo "$line" | grep -Eq .*[^db].nco) && echo "$line" >> paths.txt; done
rm escaped-paths.txt
cat paths.txt | while read line; do cp $line ~/Desktop/file.zip && 7z e ~/Desktop/file.zip -oImages >/dev/null; done3 -
Rant about IT teacher
(This happened a few months ago)
I go to highschool and in ninth grade you learn about Excel and databases in general. In the first half of the year we learned how to use excel and in the second part of the year we learned about SQL databases.
So we learned SQL and how to set up a database using LibreOffice Base. At the end of the year we had to do one final project which was setting up a database and writing some queries.
We had to do it in groups of two and we had to choose for what we wanted to make a database.
We had like 5 minutes time to discuss it in the groups and me and my friend decided to do something like GitHub, so a database with tables for all the users, repositories, etc.
Then we had to tell our teacher what we wanted to do. Others made databases for hospitals, shops, netflix, app stores. The teacher asked the other groups, they told him what they wanted to do and he wrote it down. Here is how it went down with my group:
Teacher: So what do you want to do?
Me: A database for something like GitHub
Teacher: For what?
Me: GitHub
Teacher: what?
Me (very slowly): G I T H U B
Teacher: what is github?
Me: ...
(I was very surprised that he didn't know GitHub)
Me: well, you can upload files and work on them together with other people. There are also things like branches...
Teacher: Ah ok, so a cloud service
(I was done and wanted to end the conversation)
Me: Yes... it's a cloud service...
(Me in my mind: why do i have to be here)
We named our project 'GitGud', a little bit passiv aggresive.
Yeah so apparently my IT teacher doesn't know GitHub, however he installed Ubuntu on some of the school computers so I guess that's nice
We got an A so that's good.14 -
I've every been a Arch Linux fag. It's my main OS from 5 years. With a small parenthesis of two months of FreeBSD recently, I've used before Arch Kubuntu, Ubuntu, Fedora KDE, OpenSolaris (randomly), CentOs, plus a lot of others distro for tests.
But I've never tested Debian!
So I've installed it on my small server.
Oh... My... God.... It's fantastic. PACMAN >>> apt, but damn it's really stable and out of the box even if minimal. A very surprise. I think it can be my favorite remote Linux for a long time....
But a question rises. Why with a father like Debian... Ubuntu after the 11.04 is such a shame? The last I've tested is the 12.04 I think, but I've hated it, and I hate it even now. (Crash, driver not found, apt problem, very heavy repos and my internet sucks, UNITY, etc...)
Ubuntu, what happened to you ...? With Kubuntu 8 you were such a good guy...4 -
Decided it was high time to give windows the boot, other than the very rare gaming I do there seemed to no longer be a valid reason to keep it. So off I went, kubuntu looked nice, but after 2 hours I determined it did not like me much. No matter how much I google, could not find out why it would not pick up sda in the installers drive selection.
So figured, last try, grab the Ubuntu ISO and booted with that, and what do you know, 5 min later I am installing my software....1 -
So I thought... Hey, why not bring my laptop running Ubuntu to school. It's faster than my Windows one, and I use it all the time at home.
Then I realized 99% of students will nag me about how I'm using a knock off version of Mac Os 😒
But if I did bring it, maybe I could FINALLY teach my computer science "teacher" something.3 -
My cycle : windows - ubuntu - mint - fedora - elementary - kubuntu - apricity os - debian - windows.
Why? Because that damn linux has fucking problem with hybrid intel/amd gpus13 -
The team leader call us for a serious meeting, and he wants it to be productive,
Leader: "we shall not procrastinate anymore. We don't have time left. We should not just talk random bullshit like we did the last few times. Aight?"
We all agree to be productive.
We also set a few main subjects and decision to be discussed. Then, we all get into the meeting room seriously. In a meeting, we try the idea of the upcoming project. But we suddenly went off topic. Then, My friend talk about L4D2. Then we start playing. And, I say, why not try some GTA5? I proudly reboot my expensive laptop from Ubuntu to Windows and playing GTA. Then, we start spotify and talk about song.
We laid in the sofa and talk sexually. My friend introduce me his favorite AV and we compare our manhood's size.
It was 4am already. One by one the attendee fall asleep.
It is lIke... the survival gamr of sleepiness? xD
Only my best boy friend and I were left awake, talking about ourselves, watching the beautiful midnight city.
Then, 2 of us ourselves start to talk about project idea. It is something cool and crazy to think about, like a friend making app. The 3 hours of brainstorming is gay and romantic.
"Okay, so we have the outline. let's sleep, baby" So we sleep till the noon. We wake up. Some left. Some were still sleeping. The birds twitter in the bequtiful skyline.
I did not forget to upload my idea to discord after going home in the morning. End of the meeting. Barely any goal was met in the meeting.
Those days, we make attempt of productive meeting again and again but end up procrastinating everyday. We had meeting in a small bedroom and it was our meeting room. We played different songs, tasted different wines.
And, finally one day, my friend say "I feel that it is much productive to work alone in a separate room. So we won't get distracted by each other."
Another friend: "yea..I know it is harsh... but yea... true... let's work alone"
I almost eant to cry. But we cannot indulge ourselves in the moments of dreamy romance.
We should start real work and don't be gay.1 -
Why doesn't Skype of business have an application for Linux? Every company meeting where a developer isn't involved is run on sfb. Being on Ubuntu it is hard to attend any such meeting. Any meeting between developers is on zoom so we're good.
We can't really convince every one (other than developers) to start using zoom.
Do we have any other alternatives? Is this a lost cause?20 -
Spend literally two days trying to figure out why I have a 2 hour offset in my timezones for a lamp web app. This isn't even close to my first timezone rodeo.
Check logs, reset Apache/MySQL/PHP timezones in like 100 places. Use 3rd party server side and client side timezone libraries. Moment.js you say? Shit works like a charm... but is, of course, still two hours off.
MySQL is right. PHP is right. Apache is right. PHP libs are in place. Finally convert the entire damn project to use epoch time because I have a deadline, I have no more time to read backwater AWS docs and try to figure out why the hell this Ubuntu EC2 is fucked up, and I literally cannot figure out why in the hell the damn clock is off.
Several days later notice a variable in the main .config file... right in root... 2 hour timezone offset.
Fuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuck.8 -
Fed up with f@_#-$&@_ Microsoft bullshit, computer refused to install IIS without a reboot first. Rebooted, got bluescreen with some error like APC_Index mismatch since it was hooked up to an external monitor (this has happened before, but only when booting into Windows, not Ubuntu), god knows why now since it was hooked up to same monitor before reboot and worked just fine. All this because some stupid school related task requires Visual Studio and a web project-solution that takes ages to run/debug which I would rather build and devug through attaching remote debugger to the running IIS-process. Instead I get into a boot-loop when the screen is connected, and when I connect the screen after a normal boot it restarts itself. Why is it always like this? Most of the time is spent just to setup the environment or making Windows work. F#&#_ this and the assignment, goodnight.1
-
Why does Windows have to be so fucking useless when running docker. Everytime i need to make a change to the NGINX container, I have to restart the docker daemon, rather than rebuild and restart the container.
I would be doing this on Ubuntu, if I could install it that is.8 -
Let me begin by giving props to the KDE team for being proactive, and working to improve the ecosystem in which they exist.
https://fossbytes.com/kde-slimbook-...
With that said, I'm sitting here wondering why bigger organizations - companies with significantly more clout - can't manage to do the same thing. Canonical is so busy, fapping at the notion of competing in the mobile space (they won't though) that they've lost sight of their core audience - computer users. While they insist on trying to piss in Google's Cheerios, smaller teams are 1) pushing out better firmware and software, and 2) are now creating (seemingly) good hardware as well.
As the public face of Linux (unfortunately), Canonical and the Ubuntu team have an obligation to lead from the front. In neglecting to do so, they do a disservice to the entire Linux community. KDE, Manjaro, Arch, Mate, Debian, etc are all doing more with less, and they're offering better end products than Canonical has in the last decade.

I get why linux users fight with windows users..But what i dont get is the civil war between Ubuntu, Mint and the United Linux Alliance . Why ? Why not Ubuntu ?38

I can't decide on a linux distro because all I've tried are great. Seriously.
I'd call myself a novice-to-intermediate linux user (heavy on the novice part) and since I work as a web developer it's been a great learning experience to use the same OS on my workstation as the webservers my projects run on. (Ie I started out with Ubuntu and a LAMP setup).
The thing is I distrohop ad infinitum... Feels like I've tried out every desktop environment known to mankind (I just can't stop myself when I see a new one or a new take on an old one) and I've dipped my toes in Arch territory to. Loved Antergos when that still was a thing. Found EndeavourOS this weekend, kernel panic ensued. I'm a noob with sudo and that's never a good thing. 😆 (Try out in a virtual machine first you say? Bah. Where's the fun in that?!)
So now I'm on Linux Mint w Cinnamon because why not. (Because it's sluggish and boring, that's why...) I had to just get something up and running quickly so I could get back to work. 😬
But one day in and I'm realising I actually miss GNOME. And Ubuntu feels like home. I would feel much cooler using Arch but honestly I don't think I can be trusted with it. I love tinkering with settings, look and feel and whatnot but I can honestly do that just as well in an Ubuntu/GNOME environment.
Maybe Pop!_OS... could be something for me. 😏20 -
I hate the Android update policy as hell. Why do they have to publish a new version each year? Why not a LTS version which is supported for 5 years? Barely no manufacturer is able to change their own interface aiming to adept it to the new Android version. Windows isn't publishing a new os every year. They just update it regularly to implement new functions. Ubuntu is doing the same.
WHY THE FUCK NOT ANDROID?
My HTC A9 was the first with Android 6. I didn't get Android 7 until now?! I paid a lot of money for this peace of shit! And I was granted an update for Android 7. So where is it HTC? Where?!?!?!?!?!?!6 -
What I'm doing now, writing a JS library for a simple kitchen timer (like, something that can be wound up, is ticking, can be paused, etc). Here's a list of neat stuff I've learned:
Polyfilling as a lib author (I decided against it).
Packaging the lib (using Rollup, ES6 modules are totes cool).
Using flow to add static typing in strategic places (started appreciating types in JS since reading up on functional programming).
Modelling state and transitions using an explicit state machine. (Fucking finally. There's usually an implicit state machine somewhere, only spread out all over the app...)
Using mostly side-effect free methods, being very explicit about when and why things are mutated).
Test-first/TDD (ish) using Jest and the awesome Wallabyjs.
Freeing up mental capacity by letting Prettier format my code for me (it was hard to let go but totally worth it).
Started using git.
Did all work on Ubuntu after pretty much a lifetime of Windows (initially to separate work from gaming) and finally swapped MS Visual Studio for Atom.
When it's finished I'm going to publish it on GitHub, which will also be a first for me. Might try out some CI platform while I'm at it.
tl;dr: wrote some js, felt good2 -
We had a meeting with the top IT folks in the company (top manager was in the meeting). A mix between operations (customer), engineers, and IT people were at this meeting.
The IT group was not happy that my customer had asked me to do some server work. IT wanted to control that. They wanted to shut down a server without regard to the customer using this resource constantly.
IT had heartburn about the system running Ubuntu rather than Redhat Linux. The top manager during the meeting says, "Why are you running Ubuntu? That is a gaming OS." All the other IT people who worked for them just looked at each other and us with that 'WTF? Dear caught in headlights look.'
My manager who was at same level as head of IT made a few comments. We got to keep our server and IT backed down. -
Ubuntu 17.10...
WORST UBUNTU RELEASE TO DATE!
Why oh why did they go with /swapfile by default? I was legacy booting with UEFI enabled and it still didn't work! And don't get me started on nouveau (Nvidia OSS).
When I click "use proprietary software" I want the OS to do everything in its power to just work. Disable 3D acceleration if you must - at least boot to a console.
I'm scared to try it on my main desktop now!
I switched to Linux Mint and I'm happy now, I just needed an instant OS that works. 😊8 -
This is the worst possible thing that can happen, when you setup a new computer.
I live for about a decade on ubuntu. I got an invite for a LAN where games are being played that I cannot run with wine or are not ported to linux.
Fine I get an old harddrive and setup a fresh Windows 7. I have a little update script that takes care of updating and restarting.
BUT I CAN NOT DO ANY UPDATES.
As you can see in the picture the original Windows 7 installation disc that was part of my computer did not carry the matching NIC drivers.
A friend of mine gave me a spare WiFi dongle. That did not bring its drivers on the USB dongle but on disc that he lost.
WHY?! HOW?! This is not plug and play. This is a part that SHOULD be plug and play.
After I got an other WiFi dongle that was plug and play, I could finally download the right drivers.
Why can the Windows 7 disc that was part of the computer setup not contain the right drivers, but a ubuntu 12.04 live disc can?!
ARGH3 -
I have spent days trying to solve a windows 10 installation problem. I'm so pissed off at my own stupidity.
All I had to do was unplug my main hardrive with Ubuntu installed on it because of course windows doesn't play nice with other operating systems is being installed.
I only need you for games windows 10! Why be so fucking difficult!17 -
Seriously though.
Why use Arch. It sounds like headaches.
What is the benefit. Like, I used to have fun with
tweaking systems and so forth, until it became
not so fun when I had to actually do it to make
money, like server admin on my websites.
From the sounds of it, setting it up takes hours, none of the packages are quite ready, it takes google research and troubleshooting for common tasks, etc.
Why not say, Ubuntu, kde? Or whatever.13 -
In follow up to my last rant.....
A friend just informed me that I should enable dhcpcd to get networking in arch...
I was typing dchpd......
why don’t I read things more carefully
I’ve been at this for hours and I just installed ubuntu alongside arch because I need my laptop for tomorrow. Ugh -
I said I wanted Ubuntu, and I got Ubuntu 18.04
Why you might ask? Because the older LTS has features that have had more time for bugs to be fixed.7 -
Just had some problems with a cronjob I've been playing around which kept my pc running for like 10 mins after i used `shutdown -H`.. My mother asked me why i wa so mad at my pc
Me: A cronjob is stopping ubuntu from shutting down.
She: What's ubuntu?
Me: the os I've told you about the whole last weekend
She : what's OS?
I and my father literally explained her Ubuntu and Linux basics for at least 2 hours after she asked why my pc is looking "so purple" (i was using the console).
btw got the bug fixed :) -
People keep asking me the reason why I am still using my 9 years old laptop which has Pentium b940 and 4 GB of ram. I should say Its enough for me!
All hard work is on the server side. I just need an SSH client, VS Code, Chromium, and Spotify, all running on a light weight Ubuntu. why should I buy one of those brand new laptops which has lights more than a UFO.6 -
WHY
WINDOWS
10
IS
FRCIKIN
SLOW!!!!!
And why when I see a question about turning off the update, the answer is always "why you want to disable the update? Its dangerous you know bla bla bla bla"
I dckin KNOW!!! I JUST WANT TO MAKE THIS FUCKIN MACHINE CAN RUN LIKE A NORMAL i7 and 16GB of RAM!!!
Oh, and for the record, I have installed ubuntu on my first hardisk, and win on my 2nd hardisk which is I installed for gaming purpose only10 -
I'm using an Ubuntu laptop for 3 years now. However, I've bought a MacBook Pro today, because I want to see how it works, and why everyone loves it.
So, I'm looking for people who also made this switch and what they had to learn and found strange at first side
And what they liked about Mac and what about Ubuntu?7 -
That rage when you reinstall Ubuntu MATE on its partition, and it decides to nuke your Windows partition instead, with all the files you had on it too.
FFFFUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUCK
HOW HARD CAN IT FUCKING BE TO INSTALL YOURSELF WHERE I FUCKING TELL YOU TO? WHY THE FUCK DO YOU EVEN ASK ME WHAT TO DO, IF YOU'RE GONNA HAVE A MIND OF YOUR OWN ANYWAY?
DIE IN A FIRE5 -
Guys, why does every idea project I get are already made!

Hey I have an idea, I could create a linux distro to replace those 🤬 windows 7 that have office 2003 and all that crap and that always update at my brother’s school.
I should base it on Ubuntu, as it is the most popular distro with the most support on the Internet (for those teachers that can’t enter a 🤬 ‘ , yes an apostrophe).
It should have all those sweet open source softwares to show the kids the open source world.
It should have a centralized restriction thingy.
How could I name it? Oh maybe Edubuntu, yeah that’s a cool name.
*searches it*
🤬 you!
I guess I could contribute to it, but I think it’s dead3 -
Why broken stuff is allowed through the door?
My Ubuntu, my Bluetooth headsets, Jira, my latest Google pixel, eCommerce shop where I purchase stuff everything lately seem to be full of bugs.
It seems like nobody cares about the quality of software pushed to production. Everyone is so quick to push those tickets into "released".
Fuck you, managers, shareholders, scrum masters, seniors who push developers to do stuff quickly rather than correctly.3 -
after aprox ~1 year of using ubuntu with gnome and countless UI inconsistencies (and not to mention memory leaks left and right) I finally gave up and successfully managed to hackintosh my work laptop ... here's another reason why :(2
-
I ordered a new, speedy, 128gb patriot flash drive last week. I was so excited! I was going to partition it into a fat32 partition, and a bootable Ubuntu with persistence. Now I have the drive and that seems like something I might fuck up, and I don't know why I needed this so badly. I remembered the 10+ 8gb drives I have laying around. I have a problem.3

Me: Yea, Linux is great! Screw Windows!
*Touchpad stops working on startup
Me: It's fine, it could happen on Windows...
*Laptop fans start blasting at 100% during class
Me: It's uhh, probably just a simple thing, nothing to worry about....
*Restarts computer after updating. Screen completely black, even after restarting multiple times.
Me: Oh FFS....4 -
Why is NetworkManager in Ubuntu so buggy? I really hate it. Makes me even miss Windows. Desktop with random freezes and the super intelligent resolvd can't even resolve shit. So I can't connect to VPN to work, so I gotta reboot a damn Linux machine to make it work. Why this Linux Desktop decay? Why?11
-
Well, tried to install Ubuntu on my other personal laptop today.
Never have I wanted to use Linux so bad and not been able to. Why oh fucking why must I get this error, and the shittiest thing is I have no clue where to start.35 -
Im gonna get a new laptop soon and on my old laptop I want to install linux (cant do that on my main laptop because Im a windows dev at the moment).
I am not new to linux and have used 3 major ubuntu versions and it was all trouble, autoremoving files after update etc.
So I am planning to go Manjaro but which desktop environment shall I use? I've heard great things about i3 and Cinnamon. Gnome is not something I liked in Ubuntu.
Which desktop environment do you use, why and how did you make the choice?6 -
Oh God, how I hate a new windows laptop.
The machine just stutter for simple things. I literally spent almost two hours to download a 2 gigs .iso file.
With my speed test as normal as it always was with my previous and slower machine.
The worst part is to install another os.
I struggled to find an option in BIOS to disable Intel's RST. Which was a no no because Ubuntu couldn't understand it's config.
There's an app that comes pre installed to manage these settings. And the sucker didn't have any option to disable. Why? Because It's deprecated!
I spent 5 hours to understand that l needed to access the machine BIOS and activate a hidden option (did you think the option was right there huh?) in order to remove Intel RST.
Oh God how I hate tech monopoly.
Now my machine can breath without shitloads of unused apps and garbage "file checkers" and "anti viruses" that comes pre installed.
And things download super fast without any struggles.9 -
Spend 2 hours migrating my old NASs ubuntu zfs pool to the new freeBSD NAS, which has new fancy stuff like a crossflashed raid card new hyper efficient psu and so on. Sadly, the pool just wont import, many drives are missing. I debug. For hours. Trying to test cables. Interesting. No matter which SATA cables i switch, this one drive always starts... Hm... Must be the controller then. Maybe the controller doesnt spin up the other disks, because i removed the boot rom! That must be it! Wait... Why is this cable lying in here... Wait, this is the power cable attached to all missing driv ARE YOU FUCKING KIDDING ME?! I WASTED SO MUCH FUCKING TIME ON THIS SHIT HOW COULD YOU DO THIS TO ME!
Unfortunately, one power cable become loose (i dont know how, these cables have plastic thingies to prevent this...), but it works now. And its better than before. -
Sooo... The ways my coworker fucks me:
Last week I have been working on setting up aWireGuard VPN server... Been trying for 4 FUCKING DAYS, the easiest VPN that has ever existed, 2 commands and that's it, I wasn't able to reach it, I checked every forum, tested every possible solution without success, checking ubuntu firewall but it was inactive... Nothing that should cause this. Why? 2 weeks ago we had a security breach and my coworker added a firewall from the cloud console with basic rules allowing only 3 ports, the port I was communicating with was blocked. He didn't bother to mention that he added an external firewall. And the junior me, not wanting to be a pain in the ass, and since that security breach wasn't my responsibility to fix, I didn't ask too many questions, just read the emails going back and forth and "learning" how to deal with that. Kill me please. Next mont a new guy is joining, we had a "quick meeting" of 30 minutes and he managed to make it 2 hours meeting. So a partner who lacks communication and a partner who talks a lot... Will be fun. And I probably should change my username... Is that even possible? @root?10 -
I have dual boot windows 10 and Ubuntu but some time when I using Ubuntu writing permission is not allowed on NTFS disk and some time it does Why???2
-
Anyone have any good suggestions for Java IDEs/Editors? I'm using Eclipse right now, and since I'm a student I can get IntelliJ Ultimate free, except I can't figure out why the run/debug buttons are greyed out...
Also would be cool to suggest good dark themes for whichever program you guys mention. And which OS would be good to use? I'm thinking Ubuntu right now
Plz don't hate for these dumb questions, I'm only a first year xD8 -
What is your main operating system and why? I dualboot Ubuntu/Windows 10 because I like Ubuntu and I use Windows for games and design.12
-
I feel like ubuntu gets too much attention. While it is good (even though I used it for all of about 3 weeks) it gets way too much attention and I don't know why. I can also say the same about mint. These two distros are probably the most well known and I find they actually lack a bunch of things that I love in my distro. Ubuntu has effectively branded gnome and is basically always bragging like "hey look our animations are at a high fps now" when kde plasma has been doing that for ages. Gnome and cinnamon (i find ) lack a lot of customization options and generally aren't really fun to work with. I eventually settled with arch using kde because I wanted an os that was going to be hard but would be forgiving in it's challenges and customiZations and I got that. Ubuntu and mint can be good for first timers but I feel like they get more attention then they should and others don't get as much.
Sorry for the terrible rant with probably a lot of typos. It's late and I have an opinion, it is always dangerous when I have an opinion. I don't mean to offend these distros or their users. What I say is my opinion and what I believe but hey I might be wrong.
Thanks5 -
Me: "I think I'd like to try out the new Ubuntu version. I really liked Gnome before, maybe the OS is better now?"
A couple days later...
"Man, it's really nice not having to emulate bash. I'm so much more productive now with Linux tooling! Wait, why did everything freeze?"
A week after install...
"What do you mean 'I need to recompile wireless adapter drivers'? Why isn't that included or updated through 'apt'!? Who's the person sitting at their desk saying 'yup, that's a reasonable solution?'"
Two weeks after install...
Me: "Oh, so it's not Chrome eating up system resources, there's a memory leak in gnome-shell.... WHAT!? WHY!? How do I switch back to Unity?"
One month after install...
Me: "Yeah, so I tried it out, but then I threw my computer in a river and I'm *so much* better off now."3 -
Been uninstalling things to free up space on my tiny SSD so can install an Ubuntu VM... when I just suddenly realized I could put it on an external HD....
But now actually thinking again... That HD is has a lot of things I don't want to lose... Wouldn't want to rush it failing...
hm... what should I do? 🤔😟😵
Why does moving development environments feel more daunting than buying a house?10 -
Noooooo... all I wanted is to quickly reboot to Ubuntu! Why Windows, why?!?!?! So much time wasted staring at this screen, so many lines of unwritten code...6
-
Git... I just love it!
Oh, and Guake Terminal on Ubuntu :)
And Sublime Text...
Why? Because they get out of your way and just help you get stuff done...safely.
PS: also Trello :)5 -
Regarding my previous rant where I shit talked about ubuntu 17.10
So instead of downgrading I tried a last chance (why not, system was fucked already) by installing unity, yes the same shit that ubuntu team removed from ubuntu 17.10 as major upgrade.
Well, it turns out gnome shell was taking more than half of my cpu in idle state and this unity barely reaches above 10%
Life lesson learnt: not every upgrade is better
Same goes for android studio, let's save it for another rant10 -
Ha! I remember now why I picked windows over ubuntu as environment for developing, I can install simultaneously apps in Windows meanwhile in Ubuntu cannot because something gets locked! And FFS the drivers! And also there's no simple way to do simple things like install and get a desktop icon without having to touch some scripts! I mean WTF!9
-
I DONT KNOW WHY BUT UBUNTU 17.04 SET MY ONLY DISK TO /DEV/SDB, I RAN A DD TO DELETE MY USB DRIVE (I TAUGHT IT WAS /DEV/SDB) AND DELETED ALL MY PARTITIONS! F* THIS SHIT, I'M GOING BACK TO ARCH11
-
Why do *popular* devs prefer OSX over Ubuntu, Mint or other linux distribution? Don't they like to support open source? I just picked a MBA and have spent time with it but I still prefer Ubuntu.
Note - By popular, here I mean those devs who are noteworthy on Twitter, Github etc. I won't speak names obviously.10 -
Why the fuck can't I switch fuckimg tabs in the Ubuntu terminal with the fucking keybord? I use the terminal, my hands are both on the keyboard not on the fucking mouse! Fuck!
(If there is a shortcut, please let me know)7 -
I've been using ubuntu for more than 2 years now and would like to know why arch is so popular. What advantages does it have over other popular distros?5

We had a tutorial on how to use spark/Hadoop.. part of the tutorial was the installation instructions for Ubuntu vms.
The Prof insisted we used an older version of Hadoop (v2.1.5), so naturally this required pulling older repos and older versions of java.
Naturally, some of the people in the class got some namespacing issues and garbage left from uninstalled packages.
Now, the tutorial was geared towards business/math people, not com sci. So most of the people didn't understand why apt didn't let them run certain commands (even though it very clearly just asked for them to run autoremove or autoclean, like in the "error message"). When the Prof and their "experienced TA" saw these messages, their recommendation was "make a new fresh vm".
The fuck? I heard that, run over and was like no. Just run the suggested command, it's literally a simple issue. And the guy didn't believe me. I had to sit him down, show him how I literally typed what the console was asking for, and everything just worked... The guy's response was "well that's Linux for you, its really complicated and can never trust anything, this time it worked, but next time it might not". Dude... Do you even know what you are saying? Like you are a supposed expert, least have some understanding of the package manager you are using. Maybe things will then be less "schrodinger cat".
God damn I can't wait to be out of this stupid fucking school. Never going back to academia.1 -
Why the fuck open source solutions need to be such a load of bullcrap? I've spent a week trying to set up every single self-hosted video conference software, and the only thing I've got is a shorter lifespan.
How the fuck does your (judging by GitHub, well maintained) software only support Ubuntu 16.04? And I mean ONLY, there's no support for docker, or any other distro either, and we're only weeks from getting the second LTS since 16.04. And why the fuck does documentation tell me to manually go through 20 different config files just to enable SSL?
Why the fuck doesn't your official AWS cloudformation template include VPC or other required parameters? I've had to rewrite the whole thing just to get a valid stack you dipshit!
And how fucking hard is to make your software look decent, I can't expect clients to chat with me using something that looks like an incest child of 2003 MSN and eDonkey?
Oh, and it'd be fucking dandy if your documentation wouldn't return 404, maybe I'd be even able to test what your product has to offer?
I guess after everything I've tried I'll go with Jitsi; it seems the most decent, although it lacks some pretty basic features like limiting chat features for guests.22 -
LINUX. I'm sure everyone heard this term. But I still don't know why do people want to give up their life and try this piece of crap. I know many of you might be offended, but, to hell with that. When I heard about the Linux, and everyone was praising it about it, I thought that I should give it a try. So, I installed Ubuntu (obviously, because I was a beginner) and the installation failed. I thought that I've made some mistake. Tried again, FAILED. So, I waited for next version. After downloading and trying to installing it, Voila. I installed it. Then comes the part when I actually started using it, for as simple as watching a video. I didn't play. It gave an error of some codec was missing. I installed the codec and then I payed the video successfully. Then, I want to install the Oracle Java Development Kit, and literally it was a pain to install. It took me half an hour to install and configure it. Then after using it for a couple of days, I found that my WiFi was acting weird. I booted up my Windows just to check it and it worked perfectly on windows. Then why the heck was it not working on Ubuntu. Don't know. On searching about it, I found that my WiFi adapter's driver was having some issues. Then after using it for more days, something very weird happens, the Ubuntu booted but with terminal only. No GUI, No Unity, nothing. I against searched for it, found some commands, ran it and it started normally. So, the point that I'm trying to make is that even for simple and basic tasks, I always have to search about it every time to get it working. I mean if their are so many steps to be taken for every simple task then why people keep on recommending it. With the Linux installed, I was very much distracted from my primary work. Instead of doing my work I was searching for installing JDK. I mean wtf. In Mac or Windows its as simple as downloading the file, installing it and you're done. But in Linux I don't know. And the whole Linux community thinks that Windows sucks. I mean on windows I was more relaxed and more focused on my work. Whenever we search for the Linux, many people say that Android is a Linux. I get it, but in Android, many developers have worked very hard to make it as what it is nowadays. But what about Ubuntu, Fedora or any other distribution. I haven't seen any distribution which makes me feel that I wanna use it again. None of them. So, Linux is not a great OS according to my experience11

Trying to setup a ltsp server for fun. Neve done server things before.
The server and the thin client are in VMs. So I start, install openssh, and them when I try to ssh... WHY CAN’T I FUCKING CONNECT, I CHECKED THE IP WITH IFCONFIG, oh shit, forgot to configure the vm network... so ssh works! Then I setup dhcp (I really don’t know what I’m doing, just following the tutorial), the ltsp configs thing, build the client image and then, I HAVE NO FUCKING INTERNET CONNECTION. Continues, boot up the thin client... WHY CAN’T YPU FUCKING FIND THE SERVER!! Then I realise the vm is not an ubuntu one, so delete it and make a new one... WHY DOES IT STILL DOESN’T WORK!!!!!! Oh wait forgot to connect to the network! Goes to put the network adaptor, and: wait! I don’t need NAT! So I replace the NAT by the correct network, and: Wait it lets me choose the weird thingy intel/pce thingy, oh I remember now! It said we needed the “...III FAST...”! Activate it and... IT WORKS ! !!!! CONNECTS TO THE SERVER!!! GOT THE DHCP!!! WAIT!!!!! What is THAT 🤬 TFTP LOADING THING!!!:
TFTP open timeout

I actually learnt this last year but here I go in case someone else steps into this shit.
Being a remote work team, every other colleague of mine had some kind of OS X device but I was working this Ubuntu machine.
Turns out we were testing some Ruby time objects up to a nanosecond precision (I think that's the language defaults since no further specification was given) and all tests were green in everyone's machine except mine. I always had some kind of inconsistency between times.
After not few hours of debugging and beating any hard enough surface with our heads, we discovered this: Ruby's time precision is up to nanoseconds on Linux (but just us on OS X) indeed but when we stored that into PostgreSQL (its time precision is up to microseconds) and retrieved it back it had already got its precision cut down; hence, when compared with a non processed value there was a difference. THIS JUST DOES NOT HAPPEN IN OS X.
We ended up relying on microseconds. You know, the production application runs on Ubuntu too. Fuck this shit.
Hope it helps :)
P.s.: I'm talking about default configs, if anyone knows another workaround to this or why is this the case please share. -
Friend (civil engineer) : bro do you have windows cd?
Me : no but why?
F: I want to format my pc.
M : then buy genuine copy.
F : don't want to waste money in that.
M : then don't cry for lagging windows 😂😂😂
F : do you have any cost efficient way?
M : yes ,but tell me one thing ,why do you need a computer?
F : browser , office , Dropbox ( cad installed in his desk which have genuine windows)
*After 10 minutes of conversation*
F: I will bring laptop , install Ubuntu in it2 -
Why the fuck is the default installation of Python on Ubuntu 18.04 incomplete and missing *default* modules? And WHYYY are there no fucking instructions anywhere on how to fix this??
I was hoping to be able to sit with my laptop and do stuff instead of in the dark corner by my desktop computer. It seems like I can never get things to work on my laptop, and I feel like I've either got the crappiest installation of the OS or that I'm just so stupid that no one else ever had my issues. Or, if I do find people who had the same issues, not a single one of the solutions that worked for literally everyone else ever works for me. 😐8 -
Why the fuck is windows always a bitch when it comes to font rendering. I mean we are not in 1995 to see such shitty fonts. The fonts look like shit and the ClearType text utility does nothing.
I mean even Android does hell of a lot better than Windows. I am comparing these two because both have to deal with fairly large amount of different H/W configuration and support them.
I already use Ubuntu so please don't tell me use Linux.
Also tried using the MacType third party tool. It works but not as good.2 -
I have just slept for a minimum of 5 hours. It is 7:47 PM atm.
Why?
We have had a damn stressful day today.
We have had a programming test, but it really was rather an exam.
Normally, you get 30 minutes for a test and 45 minutes for an exam.
In this "test" we have had to explain what 'extends' does and name a few advantages of why one should use it.
Check.
Read 3 separate texts and write the program code on paper. It was about 1 super class and 1 sub class with a test class in Java.
Check.
Task 3: Create the UML diagram of the code from above. *internally: From above? He probably means my code since there is no other code there. *Checks time*. I have about 3 minutes left. Fuck my life.*
Draws the boxes. Put the class names in each of them. A private attribute for the super class.
Teacher: Last minute!
Draw the arrow starting starting from the sub class to the super class.
Put my name on each written paper. And mentally done for the day. Couldn't finish the last task. Task 3.
During this "test", I heard the frustrations of my classmates. Seemed like everyone was pretty much pissed.
After a short discussion with the teacher who also happens to be the physics professor of a university nearby.
[If you are reading this, I hope that something bad happens to you]
The next course was about computer systems. Remember my recent rant about DNS, dhcp, ftp, web server and samba on ubuntu?
We have had the task to do the screenshots of the consoles where you proof that you have dhcp activated on win7 machine etc. Seemed ok to me. I would have been done in 10 minutes, if I would be doing this relaxed. Now the teacher tells us to change the domain names to <surnameOfEachStudent>.edu.
I was like: That's fine.
Create a new user for the samba server. Read and write directories. Change the config.
Me: That should be easy.
Create new DNS entries in the configs.
Change the IPv6 address area to 192.168.x.100-200/24 only for the dhcp server.
Change the web server's default page. Write your own text into it.
You will have 1 hour and 30 minutes of time for it.
Dumbo -ANGRY-CLIENT-: Aye. Let us first start screenshotting the default page. Oh, it says that we should access it with the domain name. I don't have that much time. Let us be creative and fake it, legally.
Changes the title element so that it looks like it has been accessed via domain name. Deletes the url and writes the domain name without pressing Enter. Screenshot. Done. Ok, let us move to the next target.
Dhcp: Change lease time. Change IP address area. Subnet mask. Router. DNS. Broadcast. Optional domain name. Save.
Switches to win7.
ipconfig /release
ipconfig /renew
Holy shit it does not work!
After changing the configs on ubuntu for a legit 30 minutes: Maybe I should change the ip of the ubuntu virtual machine itself. *me asking my old self: why did not you do that in the first place, ass hole?!*
Same previous commands on win7 console. Does not work. Hmmm...
Where could be the problem?
Check the IP of the ubuntu server once again. Fml. Ubuntu did not save when I clicked on the save button the first time I have changed it. Click on save button 10 times to make sure it really is saved now lol.
Same old procedure on win7.
Alright. Dhcp works. Screenshot.
Checks time. 40 minutes left.
DNS:It is your turn. Checks bind9 configs. sudo nano db.reverse.edu.
sudo nano db.<mysurname>.edu.
Alright. All set. It should work now.
Ping win7 from ubuntu and vice versa. Works. Ping domain name on windows 7 vm. Does not work.
Oh, I forgot to restart the bind9 server on ubuntu.
sudo service bind stop
" " " start
Check DNS server IP on win7. It looks fine.
It still doesn't work. Fuck it. I have only 20 minutes left. Samba. Let us do this!
10 minutes in. No result. I don't remember why. I already forgot why I have done for it. It was a very stressful day.
Let us try DNS again.
Oh shit. I forgot the resolver!
sudo nano /etc/resolv.conf
The previous edits are gone. Dumb me. It says it in the comments. Why did not I care about it. Fuck it.6 minutes left. Open a yt video real quick. Changes the config file. Saves it. Restarts DNS and dhcp. Closes the terminal and opens a new one. The changes do not affect them until you reopen them. That's why.
Change to win7.
Ping works. How about nsloopup.
Does not work.
Teacher: 2 minutes left!
Fuck it.
Saves the word document with the images in it. Export as pdf. Tries to access the directories of the school samba server. Does not work. It was not my fault tho. Our school server is in general very slow. It feels like they are not maintained and left alone like this in the dust from the 90s.
Friend gets the permission to put his document on a USB and give the USB to the teacher.
Sneaky me: Hey xyz, can you give me your USB real quick?
Him: sure.
Gets bombed with "do you want to format the USB?" pop-ups 10 times. Fml. Skips in a fast way.
Transfers the pdf. Plug it out. Give it back.
After this we have had to give a presentation in politics. I am done.6 -
I've always been a strong critic of the mac operating system and apple in general for they're overpriced products. few months back my old laptop kicked the bucket and repairing it was not an option as i was sick of charging the laptop after every 3-4 hours and had to purchase a new laptop immediately. loooking at my options around 50k rs or 700$ all windows laptops available in indian markets sucked (except for lenovo 320s) so i made the shift to macbook air 2017.my daily work involves photoshop illustrator and a dash of premiere pro. I also work on nodeJS and python using the pycharm and atom IDEs. After using it for a month i feel in love with mac platform and macos. Its a wonderful experience. gone are the days of crashes and the windows updates (ugh). the boot of the laptop is like magic and softwares like wmware imovie and notes keynote are f**king awesome. Long hours of work have become fun rather than hell dealing with constant windows gimmicks and bad battery optimisation on linux.
An explanation why all developers (except for the ones who require high powered gpus) graphic designers should shift to macos rn.
Advantages of using mac
No forced updates update whenever now or a f'ing month later no probs.
better battery optimisation than linux
no more installing os again and again (ubuntu)
better vm than virtualbox (vmware)
terminal for running bash commands
no crahes
Xcode platform
trackpad is worlds better than the best windows trackpad
Disadvantages
some softwares not available for macos
storage is generally less on macbooks
UI is simple (less elaborated than windows)
Workarounds
get a vm and install linux(vmware fusion 8)
ps. u may not need it though
wine and wine bottler for using windows apps
get a microsd to sd adapter for macbook and expand storage5 -
Okay, so...
We have backend app written in phalcon 3.4.
I got task to prepare new test enviroment, based on ubuntu 20.04, php 7.4 and 'copy-paste' our Phalcon backend there.
Soooo.. That backend was outsourced and I have exacly 0 Phalcon expirience.
Phalcon 3.4 does not support php 7.4
Last 2 days Im tearing my hair out to port it over to Phalcon 4, with honorable mention why the fuck memcache didnt just want to work, and finally its working.
Now Im taking the heat that making new test enviroment takes more than few hours.
Fuck off, let me do this shit, and understand its not just apt-getting dependencies for fuck sakes.2 -
Windows is so fucking stupid. Why do I HAVE to enable "Do nothing" when my lid is closed for it to be able to output to my external display while my lid is closed. Ubuntu can easily recognise that I want to use my external display and will keep my laptop running as long as it has an HDMI to a connected source.
It really fucking pisses me off I have to change my power options everyday. Seriously fuck windows. The only thing keeping me on Windows is Visual Studio, I hope they are able to port VS and the full .NET framework entirely on Linux so this shit OS can just be dead forever.3 -
As a long time Ubuntu user, last month I upgraded from Xenial to Bionic to try the new Gnome based desktop.
At first I thought it was a good transition, everything was working fine, beautiful UI, nice animations, so I installed all my tools and started the real work... then the problems started. The memory usage was always very high and only getting higher, the animations were stuttering and laggy, and it was having an unrecoverable freeze at least twice a week. Searching the web I was seeing more and more people complaining about freezes, lags, bugs, memory leaks, password input field bugs... damn, how I missed Unity! That was it, Gnome Shell made me miss Unity more and more.
This week I installed Unity 7 and purged Gnome Shell from Bionic. Now I'm happy again!
It's so good to be free of the anxiety caused by the lack of stability of the system, so good to know that the system will not break or freeze if I'm doing a resource intensive task. Now he sh** is working fast and stable, and I'm here wondering why such a good DE could be dumped for something so buggy like Gnome.1 -
Why everyone who decide to try Linux installs Ubuntu? I don't find it useful friendly at all. And adding a repo every app is daunting. And on top of that on their official site there isn't a single mention of Linux. And yeah, Canonical make money off your data.24
-
Serious question. And apologize if I sound stupid.
Why do people, especially here on devRant brag about Arch Linux?
What is so special about this OS?
What does this OS do better than Ubuntu, Debian, Kali Linux, Fedora etc?11 -
To the sysadmins:
We are currently installing and configuring dns, dhcp, smb, ftp and webserver on Ubuntu vms in class.
The teacher changed his mind and want us to install a system that has everything installed and configured.
He recommended Zentyal to us.
What would you use and why would you use it?4 -
Note to self:
The power button on Ubuntu 16.04 while TeXstudio is open won't just open the panel for shutdown, lock,... it will also close TeXstudio... and shutdown my computer.5 -
Using Ubuntu atm. Use Mac a bit. Why Mac so hard to use and so expensive for that hardware capability.10
-
I am looking to switch from Ubuntu (once again).
I already used Fedora and Arch in the past, while Arch was my fav, its just too much of a hassle to setup. But I keep finding tiny things that annoy me on Ubuntu.
So anyhow, what do you use/reccomend and why?13 -
Ubuntu has taken the "Lindows" thing too far. Three updates in and the built-in RDP server gets fucked.
If canonical makes so much money with ubuntu...why are they even allowed to make such mistakes? Fedora is much more stable with newer packages.
Sadly most popular software opts in for Debian's cousin who likes to eat Elmer's glue. -
I'm so god damn sick of unattended upgrades and OS updates. I've switched from Ubuntu to NixOS for a few months now already and it's the greatest thing I've ever done, because it's declarative, it's rational and it's fast. Unfortunately today I had to switch back to Ubuntu for the day, because I don't have my main laptop with me and now I remember why I hate this OS. This piece of shit garbage keeps running unattended upgrades updates when I'm doing busy work. Like I'm writing my Jenkinsfiles and sitting in work meetings and then suddenly a fucking unattended upgrade eats 100% CPU and turns my friendly laptop into a jet turbine :(((6
-
Why the FUCK does this bloated Ubuntu rotten swamp corps of a former beautiful Debian always, really ALWAYS, FUCK UP distro upgrades!! Which retarded spoon shagger at Canonical came to the conclusion it were a good idea to release every 6 month, regardless of the inability to actually update this crap?!? My other systems run Arch since their first install back in 2009, still clean and up-to-date systems!!!!3
-
It seems like lately more and more people are joining this massive wave of Linux converts. And part of me is like "well fuck yeah, why wouldn't they? Shit just makes sense with linux."
But then I stop and consider what some of the hipster YouTubers are saying when they say "how to fix when your hipster OS is broken by pacman by installing Ubuntu blah, blah, ad nauseum."... Which Linux distro is /truly/ the most "hipster" distro of them all?6 -
How the fuck can people acutally work with freaking windows?!
I use a dual boot with ubuntu and windows, the only reason why there is a small piece of windows is because i like to play games some time, and the freaking developers who are coding them are afraid of windows or whatever ...
Anyway, i wanted to try something with windows and app virtualization which required me to use windows. Holy shit everything is so freaking complicated if you want to do it not with a gui. Need some admin rights, ... no dont use the terminal you need to right click 'run as admin' and shit. I mean wtf?!
How can people who have a freaking idea of what they are doing using windows?!
Every f*cking minute with that shitty os feels like a hour. 2 blue screens so far, and it seems m$ decided to download some updates that freaking block my work and getting my pc to lag ... what a piece of sh*t!21 -
So,I bought a new laptop (comes with windows preinstalled). I quite like macOS and (some) linux distro. "I'll triple boot, suffer to hackintosh it, install either Ubuntu GNOME or Elementary OS and leave Windows 10" I thought.
Upon further reflection "But why would I need win 10?"
// searches "Why use windows?"
// google "Why is windows so bad"
" Nah, I haven't used win in a long time, I'll give it a go. We were buddies when it was XP. It can't be that bad, it must be better now."
//A few days later it finally arrives
//proceeds to use win10
//unnecessarily complex registration
//makes a new 16gb i7 sluggish
"Let's see what's running on the background"
//downloads ubuntu GNOME, hastily9 -
Trying to build a ros workspace inside VMware...
Called up the teammate who put it together:
Me: hey the workspace isn't building for me, do I need to setup anything before I type "make"?
Him: nah dude just type make and ur good, why what error are you getting?
Me: *describes error*
Him: oh lol I never got that error before, idk maybe your machine is just dumb
Me: *uh ok sure dude* let me try some other stuff
*Boots to native install of Ubuntu*
*Build successful*
Me: oh huh that's weird it built on my native installation but not on the VM
Him: oh lol that's not my problem
Seriously dude? First off, screw you Ros for not being able to build in a VM. Secondly, it's entirely your problem! Linux is nice to use, sure, but it's a bit of a problem when the entire team runs off Mac!
😲😲😲😣😥😫😓 -
Was running personal laptop on 4.10 kernel (running Manjaro).
Was having problems for some reason with an audio program I'm using and so needed to run some older kernel that is real time for better latency.
Installed that kernel and booted with it.
Attempted to remove kernel 4.10, I don't need it anymore.
Rebooted, some kernel modules aren't loading. Xorg not creating a session.
I have no input working.
Not even wifi.
I can't detect USB devices.
Tried to fix it all night.. going through a ton of forums online...
Finally I give up. I didn't have access to anther computer to get a bootable USB image to. FUCK. IM NOT SMART ENOUFG FOR THIS SHIT.
I have 3 USB drive that I carry around all the time. Why don't I have a live image in one of them?
I went to sleep.
Next day I download Lubuntu (just to boot and backup some stuff before downloading and reinstalling Manjaro).
When I was burning the ISO to the USB, turns out I actually had a bootable Ubuntu on it the whole time.
I feel so stupid.
Last week I don't remember why, but I did sudo chmod 770 /
Which also broke my system.
Took me 3 hours to realize that this was the problem and make it work.
I love Linux. It keeps things interesting..3 -
I've been wondering about renting a new VPS to get all my websites sorted out again. I am tired of shared hosting and I am able to manage it as I've been in the past.
With so many great people here, I was trying to put together some of the best practices and resources on how to handle the setup and configuration of a new machine, and I hope this post may help someone while trying to gather the best know-how in the comments. Don't be scared by the lengthy post, please.
The following tips are mainly from @Condor, @Noob, @Linuxxx and some other were gathered in the webz. Thanks for @Linux for recommending me Vultr VPS. I would appreciate further feedback from the community on how to improve this and/or change anything that may seem incorrect or should be done in better way.
1. Clean install CentOS 7 or Ubuntu (I am used to both, do you recommend more? Why?)
2. Install existing updates
3. Disable root login
4. Disable password for ssh
5. RSA key login with strong passwords/passphrases
6. Set correct locale and correct timezone (if different from default)
7. Close all ports
8. Disable and delete unneeded services
9. Install CSF
10. Install knockd (is it worth it at all? Isn't it security through obscurity?)
11. Install Fail2Ban (worth to install side by side with CSF? If not, why?)
12. Install ufw firewall (or keep with CSF/Fail2Ban? Why?)
13. Install rkhunter
14. Install anti-rootkit software (side by side with rkhunter?) (SELinux or AppArmor? Why?)
15. Enable Nginx/CSF rate limiting against SYN attacks
16. For a server to be public, is an IDS / IPS recommended? If so, which and why?
17. Log Injection Attacks in Application Layer - I should keep an eye on them. Is there any tool to help scanning?
If I want to have a server that serves multiple websites, would you add/change anything to the following?
18. Install Docker and manage separate instances with a Dockerfile powered base image with the following? Or should I keep all the servers in one main installation?
19. Install Nginx
20. Install PHP-FPM
21. Install PHP7
22. Install Memcached
23. Install MariaDB
24. Install phpMyAdmin (On specific port? Any recommendations here?)
I am sorry if this is somewhat lengthy, but I hope it may get better and be a good starting guide for a new server setup (eventually become a repo). Feel free to contribute in the comments.24 -
Why is it that everything looks so ugly in Ubuntu? By everything, I mean the IDEs (Eclipse/Intellij), editors (sublime/vs code) and even the web pages. They look more clean and pleasing in Windows or Mac.
Is there a extension or plugin that'll make things look "pleasing"?
Sure, I can edit the font to be anything I want in vs code, but it is only for the editor. The sidebar and the menu still is in default system font (I don't like Ubuntu font)4 -
It's time to say goodbye...
... to PacRom.
//(PacRom?
//PacRom is a custom rom which has tons of //unique features. Problem: It's supports only a //few devices, like my good old OnePlus One.)
But why do I want a change now?
1. I don't get any updates or security patches any more. Yes, it hadn't stopped me to change for a longe time, but I think now that my device has more holes than a cheese.
2. I have an old Android Version (5.1.1) so I have some problems with performance and compatibility in general and with some apps.
3. I want something new, a change.
Which Custom Rom will I use next?
I want to try Ubuntu Touch for a while and then I want to go to LineageOS, but I am open minded for other ideas or suggestions.4 -
What the actual motherfucking fuck? What have I done so bad in my previous life to get this shit? Did I slay little cute puppies?
So I got a call from the client and he argued about how slow the system runs or that it happens that the copy commands fails.
It sounded interessting and I didn't know in what kind of rabbithole I'm going through.
The system is always in the year 2012 (don't ask why, it's just hardcoded ... another rant story).
Some of you maybe know that bug because it was very popular.
Wayne train, let's continue -> I saw that the copy command fails sometimes and that the system has a high CPU usage and futex lockups. Pretty strange and doesn't seem obivous why that is.
Sadly there are no logs in the system (not implemented and again ... another.fucking.rant.story.)
The system is kinda old and to patch it would mean to port shitty written programs and I don't have the time for that..
After searching and testing for weeks I finally found the fucking fuckidi fucked up problem.
A WRONG IMPLEMENTATION OF THE MOTCHERFUCKING LEAPSECOND CAUSED THIS SHITTY SHIT. A.FUCKING.LEAPSECOND. In all this time I questioned my OWN FUCKING SANITY! NOT EVERY FUCKING MINUTE HAS 60 SECONDS. THERE ARE SOME WITH 61!!
WHAT.THE.ACTUCAL.FUUUUUUUUUUUUUCK.........
I'm just mad af. It's such a release to find the solution but it's so fucked up you just wanna jump of a bridge
Here if you are interested about this bullshit: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/... -
I had never had a mac, but am pretty comfy with linux instances in the cloud and use them all the time.
Now I've had a mac for 2 days, why didn't I know that MacOS is basically Apple selling a 95% Ubuntu overlapping OS under their own brand.7 -
I might have just fucked my linux installation. Deleted the windows partition, resized the linux over the free space, can no longer boot into ubuntu.
This might have been a stupid idea - I don't know.
Can someone educate me as to why this happened and also how should I've done it?3 -
I have to install Windows server on a system that's been running a modified version of Ubuntu (yes, there is a very good reason for this), there are for raid6 configured hard drives, problem is Windows server can both delete and repartition the the hard drives, but can't see the partions when I want it to install to them! WHY, OH WHY? YOU MADE THE PARTITIONS YOURSELF! WHAT DO YOU MEAN ITS NOT THERE?!?!?1

Bash on Windows. Why? Good or evil? Thoughts?
Ok so I'm going to throw it out there, I'm a newcomer-ish to both Ubuntu and programming (2nd year CS). I'm using Ubuntu for the OS module. Can I run the C programmes in a "Windows" environment now?2 -
At the risk of starting a war I have to ask...
Should I use Ubuntu or Arch and why? I've always used Ubuntu but have seen a lot of people talking about Arch. Maybe it's time to make the jump?17 -
Fun fact: Busses in our town... or is it a city now? Haven't checked the population count in a while... anyway, they've got some... what would you call it... double-sided weird thing with monitors inside hanging from the ceiling and they are supposed to be used to play ads but only thing that airs there are videos from RedBull TV and an occasional "ad" reminding everyone who's paying for some fancy new buildings in the city(the EU), now that would be fine... But why the heck does the PC that runs them reboot every time the bus hits a bump or a pothole in the road and most of all why does it run a full-blown Ubuntu 10.04?!! I mean it's still better than running Windows but just why... why are they even using PCs... A Raspberry Pi would be more than enough for the job...4
-
This screenshot is from when i first installed Ubuntu, i think 2 years ago.
I though well I'm not gonna be using it much, why bother giving it more than 30 gigs?
WRONG
I instantly fell in love and this became my daily driver. Within 2 weeks this happened. So I did what any sane person would do. Deleted windows partition to make space for this lil fella. (I didn't have much hdd space)
I am a proud man4 -
First time linux user feedback
Linux lovers are probably gonna eat me alive but I don't give a flying fuck
Maybe its a little lenghty or boring, tell me what you think
Backstory:
I work for game extension company. We work with WinAPI and such. I've been using Windows since forever and I'm happy with it. But I thought to myself "hey, if I wanna be a good dev, I should give Linux and OS X a try, too"
I downloaded Linux Mint couple of months ago to start with. I was unable to boot it from live CD no matter what I tried, even in recovery mode. Apparently, Mint 18.3 was based on Ubuntu 16.04 which doesnt support UEFI
Wait, what the fuck, all modern PCs have UEFI so what, do all Mint users have 10 y/o laptops and PCs???
Anyway, when I heard about Mint 19 being released I thought to give it another try and I did. What a surprise, it booted successfully from Live CD. I saw the Linux desktop for the first time in my life, yay! I then installed it, GRUB appeared, my Windows was still there and wasn't broken so I was happy SOMETHING was working. I configured timeshift and applied dvorak layout system-wide. Realised dvorak layout is fucked up big time and applied normal layout for just desktop environment. Everything was really nice until couple reboots later Cinnamon stopped launching (kept returning to login screen). Okay, lets use timeshift
First big what-the-fuck was when I found out system restore can only be done using GUI??? This is absolutely retarded and I couldn't believe it is true. Login screen has a reachable console but I can't login there since I can't type the password. Fuck, fuck, fucking drovak layout was there.
Recovery mode - I've spent 20 minutes trying to type "timeshift --restore" having to press all keyboard buttons just to progress with one button. I've had another what-the-fuck when I saw "error: can't restore timeshift - partition already mounted"
Okay, this is too much. Why the fuck would you bundle a recovery mode if you can't restore a snapshot from there.
I have spent 3 hours now googling and trying to remove this fucking keyboard layout. No dice. I am making another copy of the live CD now. I'm gonna reinstall the whole shit now. I have the desire to create a custom Mint version without this abomination of a keyboard layout.
It's okay. Windows has taught me to be patient.
Fuck Dvorak, I dont know who the guy is but his keyboard layout can eat my dick7 -
Spent 4 FUCKING HOURS to solve a connection issue on my Ubuntu Server only to get a call after said time from the server provider that they installed an firewall and blocked my fucking port. WHY ????2
-
Why does everyone talk about Ubuntu, Mint, and Fedora for Linux based operating systems. Why not Zorin os or Arch.5
-
I've seen posts about Manjaro quite a lot recently. Just wondering:
How many of us are using Manjaro as daily usage system. And why not other?
For me it is because it connects ease of use of Ubuntu (or even Win) with possibilities of Arch. And I always liked KDE. Plus it works out of the box, with Nvidia drivers ready and stuff.question operating system os manjaro kde 😍 distro kde ubuntu linux manjaro system kde plasma linuxxx2 -
Has anyone else installed Ubuntu 18.04 and have their themes not working (I'm using arc thenes), and the top bar menu options like file, edit, etc not appearing? I can't find fixes.
AND WHY IS 18.04 SLOWER WITH GNOME?!
This better all be fixed by the final release. Also by slower, I mean animations, opening certain apps, like wth.6 -
Last weekend I was working on a small project for a friend of mine: a dockerized webapp, plus API backend and DB. I had some problems with the installation on the vps and had to try out different images and never really did a complete setup of my usual dotfiles. Got it running on an Ubuntu distro. Everything great.
It was the first release so I still had to check that every configuration worked ok, like letsencrypt companion container, the reverse proxy and all that stuff, so I decided to clone the whole project on the server tho make the changes there and then commit them from there.
Docker compose, 10 lines of code, change the hosts and password. Boom everything working. Great... Except for the images in the webapp.
WTF? Check the repo, here they are, all ok. I try different build tactics. Nothing. Even building the app on another docker always the same. Checked browser cache, all the correct ports are open. I even though that maybe react was still using some weird websocket I didn't know, but no.
Damn, I spent 5 hours checking why the f*** the server wouldn't make it out.
Then, finally, the realization...
I didn't install the f******* git-lfs plugin and all I was working with were stupid symbolics links! Webpack never even throw an error for any of the stupid images and the browser would only show a corrupted image, when decoding the base64 string.
Literally the solution took 5 minutes.
F*** changes on production, now I do everything on a fully automated CI. -
Aah fuckin ubuntu setup,
I made a some free space from windows disk management for Ubuntu setup, afterwards the turned on ubuntu setup, it showed the free disk space as unusable!!!
I did something,i don't remember, and somehow I entirely erased my E:(contains all my media) Drive 🤦. I was also about to erase my D drive ( contains all my dev work and all).Than I stopped and will sort it later.
I always have my media backed-up on mulitple disks hence I didnt lose much. But Why the fuck does Ubuntu show empty space as unusable ?????2 -
Fuck ubuntu 18.04 with their snap format. Yes it's good for things that ubuntu users need, like libreoffice or Chrome.
But GOD SAKE WHY DOCKER ?
21 days ago it was not even possible to modify daemon.json reliably xD4 -
For fuck's sake??
Anyone has any idea why Ubuntu Lts latest version goes to power saving mode post boot up4 -
Why do people use Ubuntu when there is Elementary. Elementary is easier to use and have a working wifi driver for default.3

WINDOWS?! Why don't you fucking recognise more than one partition?! It's there! You know that! Why don't you display it then?! I did find a workaround but seriously? I only use windows for gaming, ubuntu for everything else, so it wasn't that important.undefined copying files from windows to linux raspberry pi hard drives and sd-cards partitions windows3

Making a hard switch to ubuntu on my desktop at home. Getting just a teeny tiny, tad, bit: absolutely fucking livid....
Trying to learn ansible, vagrant, and docker more in depth for both work and my personal projects. All that I’ve been doing is just spinning my wheels trying to figure out the stupid fuck-mothering quirks with running this shit on Windows. Yes you absolutely can use all of these tools on a Windows box. There’s plenty of ports, patches, and workarounds. But I have spent all day trying to build a few vagrant boxes and use ansible to set them up. Simple LAMP stack boxes on CentOS7. Nothing major... unfortunately I spent like 90-110 minutes trying to figure out why virtualbox wouldn’t run properly. Dumbass me forgot that I installed Hyper-V ages ago.
O...K.... whelp... hyperv provider it is...
Luckily it only took about 15 minutes to determine that Hyperv’s networking can’t be setup from vagrant because vagrant doesn’t know how to interact with the hyperv - vswitch. So networking config is ignored and all VMs run on default switch (NAT) which is annoying but workable.
Ran into other issues trying to stay SSH’ed into the VM. PowerShell core (6) ssh’es into the box perfectly fine, but every time I opened vi to edit configs my terminal color scheme and fonts got fucked harder than a 2 dollar hooker on nickel night.
I’m a bright-green text on black background kinda guy. However the terminal kept changing to bright-red text on white background! It was like getting skull-fucked by a minotaur.
After a while I said fuck it, let’s try putty. Vagrant was using it’s own ssh keypair for the boxes, at work on my mac. Works like a dream. Putty failed me hard and shit the bed, kept getting all kinds of keypair errors. At this point I was finished spent too long trying to make shit work correctly on this jankbox. With enough time and patience I probably could’ve figured all of these problems out. I’m certain that at least 70% of them were caused by user error. I’m known by many as the walking ID-10t.
But alas, I have no time left in the day to fuck around with shit that doesn’t work immediately for morons like myself. My only hang up for the longest time with a complete switch to Linux was gaming. But with Proton and WINE I’m comfortable with giving it the ol’ college try. (Shhhh, don’t remind me I dropped out of college...
...Thrice.)
The gamble here is that I’ll give more than 2 halves of a fuck about trying to get my games working. A Study environment and materials for certs and general training won’t be getting anywhere near my full attention.
So, at long last, I hope this attempt at a full *nix switch finally sticks!!!

Why the hell Microsoft browser support the standards created? The website which I had designed worked well in my mobile (Android) and PC (Ubuntu) then I just opened it in friends laptop which had windows 10 and guess what? Transition failed to work. Why the hell Microsoft? Why the hell?3

Before installing Arch Linux, I failed to see why I'd use it over Ubuntu.
After installing Arch Linux, still have no idea why I'd use it over Ubuntu.
(Still using and loving it though, after 3+ months.)1 -
Short but sweet:
why doesn't linux mint (an Ubuntu-based distro) fucking trim SSDs by default? Ubuntu doesn't do it by default either!9 -
Been trying all day to install Ubuntu into my laptop, tried multiple USB sticks, DVDs, no luck...
I have no idea why it doesn't want to work. I've done this plenty of times before 😕3 -

Many (MANY) tutorials, Digital Ocean droplets created and destroyed, coffee mugs and FMLs later, I can say 'Hello World' from Node.js - built from source and not running as a sudoer - using express and forever on Ubuntu, behind another Ubuntu server running nginx - also built from source so to add headers-more and naxsi - using all sorts of goodies to enhance security and talking to each other via SSH. So today my teacher told me to do that project for some competition or something(frankly, I don't remember clearly what this is for). He gave us the machines we need, the CDs with the systems we have to work with. We are supposed to make a properly working Beowulf cluster from the things I've been given.
Well, no.
Fucking no.
I am really okay with making this the way my teacher wants us to do. I am okay with installing an ubuntu 16.04 server that is completly irrevelant to the project, because it's not part of the cluster. I am really okay with using some weird linux distribution on the master nobody has ever heard of. But I'm not okay when the software we've been given(including operating system) has seven pages of documentation, escpecially when fucking screenshoots of how PXE booting should look like are roughly 70% of it. No, I couldn't find a thing on the internet about it. I couldn't read the fucking manual. There was no fucking manual. There was no fucking --help. There was no motherfucking english language. Everything was motherfucking spanish, including that 7 pages long document that was supposed to guide us through our work. It was planned to be done until march. The only reason I can think of about why doing the stuff the document tells us to do would take four motherfucking months is that we'd have to learn spanish to do this. And I'm not going to do that. Not because I don't like spanish or learning. Simply because I didn't sign up for this to learn languages.
And no. I can't switch to other, human purposed software. I am only allowed to use the things the teacher has given us. Because somebody has worked on it already couple of years ago and they had left a pdf file about how to install that ubuntu server I've been writing about a while ago. Which, by the way, was the "installation guide for animals". Showing how to install a system, screenshoot after screenshot.
It took about an hour to figure out the thing supposed to handle pxe booting computers all the time was telling us that it can't work because we had to configure ethernet interface manually. Because why the fuck not. -
So it's been happening for a while now. My dual boot system just appears to have a feature: it auto boots into Ubuntu on restart.
And, I don't why but since 17.10 artful update whenever I press either up or down arrow keys while boot it shows me the log of whole procedure which is kinda nuts; I mean why would they wanna do that, this isn't '90s.
Do reply if I'm not alone.3 -
Been using a jump drive compiled as NTFS for my sneaker net. I copied some file to it from Ubuntu 18.04. I take to Windows machine and it says there are errors (does this a lot). Usually it works fine. The files I copied are not there. They were downloaded web pages as Windows machine is not on net. I noticed the file names have characters like #, ? and ` in them. So I reformat the jump drive to exFat. I copy the files from Ubuntu plus a bunch of other files. It errors like crazy on stuff that copied fine before with NTFS. Not a solution. So I find an alternate downloader for web pages I want to copy (does not have funky characters in filenames). I reformat back to NTFS on jump drive.
So basically if I want to copy files from my Ubuntu system I am stuck with NTFS and always repairing the filesystem. Yes, all my libraries for exFAT are up to date in Ubuntu.
Is there ever going to be a better way?
When is Windows going to grow up and support ext4?
Why?
Its 2019 and we still have incompatible networks and filesystem formats.7 -
On these days, I’ve been trying to update at least my Firefox or chromium in the Ubuntu 12.04.1 because they work so slowly and everything I found was using terminal command sudo apt-get upgrade or update. I tried that but what my console was showing me has nothing to do with what I saw on a few tutorials, can anyone explain why this is isn’t working?
Pd: I suppose my Ubuntu version is pretty old10 -
tl;dr Which new laptop + Linux distro combo should I get when seeking for minimal configuration and maintenance hassle?
Hey devRant gang!
I'm looking for a new laptop: which one is supported out-of-the-box by Ubuntu based Linux distros like Elementary OS?
Why Elementary OS you ask? Well, I want to move away from macOS and/but keep the minimal (and pretty) design/interface!
But: I don't want to waste time configuring stuff after install or a kernel update. I don't have time for that: I need to get shit done.
As much as I dislike closed source/evil corporate stuff the fact of the matter is that my MacBook Pro Just Works (and lets me get shit done).3 -
Was about 13-14 years old, on my first laptop, a HP Pavilion G6. I had Ubuntu on it, and tried to write an iso to a USB with dd. Didn't work, so I forgot about it for up to maybe a week, and was playing Minecraft one day when my laptop froze and nothing was responding, so I did a hard reboot.
No operating systems found.
Many tears were shed that day.
Took me maybe 6 months to realize that the "botched" dd probably caused the wipe.
Still don't know why my computer was still running... If anyone thinks that the dd didn't cause it I'm curious what your theory is.4 -
You may find his funny, bt do answer it honestly, as a Unity dev,I have been using windows for past 3 years cause I have no option, now my question is

Goes to my comment on on of the rants to "Why linux cannot AVER be used by a normal user"
I'm pretty good with techs, OS, dev etc.
But here you go, a random error message which tells me nothing (Absolutelly nothing) and no way to fix it. No way to fix it, not even a hint where to look for solution, outside google. Sure, It took me around 5 minutes to find the problem googeling and copy/pasting some bash commands, but next time it happens and I don't have internet ? Well fucked.
This shit never happens on Wiondows or MacOs :) And that's why these 2 will always be user firendly ans linux will never be.
That's why linux will never be used by normal humains.
You 100% linux addict will point out directlly 'TYeah yours repos sources are fuckied" or whatever, but it IS NOT to user to know how sources, packages etc work. I want just update my system, if one source is not found, ignotre it by default ! How hrd is that ?
Error message in question :
E: The repository 'https://ppa.launchpadcontent.net/tr... jammy Release' does not have a Release file.
N: Updating from such a repository can't be done securely, and is therefore disabled by default.
N: See apt-secure(8) manpage for repository creation and user configuration details.
Thanks for assisting to my ted talk.19 -
I spent hours setting up Laravel Valet on Ubuntu (virtual hosts with a custom TLD) e.g myproject.dev
I just found out why it was not working. Because fucking Google bought 100+ domains in the .dev gTLD and added them in Google Chrome Hosts as well. Now they redirect the url automatically to HTTPS.
Any ideas on a new test development TLD?
I was thinking .fuckgoogle but that's too long7 -
I don't know why but the default settings in Ubuntu have changed quite a lot. There was once a glorious time when if your Ubuntu got stuck, you could press Ctl + Alt + F2-F6, login to a console, run top command to see which process was taking too much time and kill it, and you can go back and start the process and again.
I remember days(~15-20 days) between restarts of my laptop, because I could do that. But now, my Ubuntu gets stuck, and continues to get stuck for about 5-10 mins, and then just restarts.
I have run the disk checks to see if my hard disk is creating issues, but no issues there. Maybe, there are times when the processes execute some buggy code and cannot get out. One fine moment, one of the processes(probably a browser or Eclipse), starts using too much memory or cpu, and the whole worlds seems to be crashing down.
But, my control to kill it promptly without crashing my other applications, was so good to have. And now, every time this happens, I feel 2016-17 and earlier days were so much better.12 -
I've been using Docker for almost two years now, I've to say it's a super powerful tool and allow easy environments deploys, but I keep questioning why people use Docker in production? Even in the place I work they do and they can't explain it very well
I mean, you are creating a container that hosts services in a computer that already have services running, being one of these services the Docker daemon, all this shit doesn't add a lot of overhead to the application?
I mean, it's not better to just install python in Ubuntu instead installing Docker in Ubuntu, run the Docker daemon, start a container with other services and now I run python?
Just saying6 -
Why Linux Mint feels like a teenager who doesn't want to grow up and be a real man?
Over the years Linux mint is what it is and i can assure you will be in the upcoming hundred years, it's so boring by default, it is based on Ubuntu, if that's the case why the devs are re-inventing something worse than ubuntu, people will argue, it comes with customization, okay, do you call few extensions a gateway to customization? I installed it in a VM and customized it to what i almost wished for however, it still feels like a child who spoiled his room over and over, is that the best thing the devs can make? I try my best to love it but from the inside there is no love, it's like your girlfrienr who you pretend to love but you are disguised....
Guys why you are using such distro?11 -
Had to face the music and make the jump from Ubuntu 22.04 to Fedora 36. Am I have to say it’s been night and day so far. Everything is snappier. Yeah dnf is very slow in comparison to apt but there’s changes you can make to speed things up and the nifty terminal interface is a great change and helps to make up for the speed issues.
Came with Python 3.10 installed, Gnome and gtk4 apps are nice, fluid and up to date and the random slowdowns, freezing and restarts of Ubuntu running the version of Gnome are nonexistent.
For the life of me I can’t see why Ubuntu would drop the ball like this. I have a Dell XPS 13 developer edition and this is the best it’s ever ran. Even wifi connectivity is better despite of the crap WiFi card that ships with this machine.
I want to love this version and while it is the most graphical appealing and functional version of Ubuntu I’ve ever used. The memory management issues make it damn near unusable.9 -
Hyper-V have one job and fail it ... Fuck micro$hit product ! Install Ubuntu on hyper-v lag as fuck ... Why why you do that mother fucker2

Ubuntu 🤬
only releasing amd64 image !! , supporting an instruction set architecture does not mean code is optimised for other microarchitecture
i thought linux distributions are do less and do way better than others, so why so much bloatware!!!.
ideally best way is to compile your own kernel and add minimal gui support as required, too much work !!!
also just a heads-up if you are using Catalina use virtual-box 6.0.22
also vivado 2019.2 is suable with ubuntu 18.04 + lightdm , remove that gnome shit15 -
Why is Arch User Repository considered as a strong point for Arch and Arch-based distros? is it more reliable than the way Ubuntu manages packages? is it ok to trust some guy that made a version of a program you need to run? why most of the programs that have a linux version are only available for Debian/Ubuntu, Fedora (made by their own developers)?13

I want to setup my pc with Linux/windows double boot but I don't have the slightest idea which distribution to use. I tried Ubuntu some years ago, but that just didn't seem to be my style.
What do you use and why?12 -
FUDGE FUDGE FRICKIN FUDGING FUDGE!

after moving back to my home country, buying an apartment and after my career started to head to nowhere because there is nothing to code for me in work, just manager stuff, I am returning to coding after work to get back into shape, practice more, learn new stuff (and the old stuff)
wanted to create a small webapp with laravel/vue, holy fucking shit how hard it is (for me) to setup your env
install composer -> command php not found
o.O im pretty sure i had php on this machine HOW THE FUCK WOULD I HAVE ALL THESE PROJECTS HERE THEN
install php8.1 -> no such package
-.-
upgraded to ubuntu 22.04, install php8.1, composer
create new laravel project -> 3 errors, missing laravel/pint, phpunit
* visible confusion * i told you to create a project, if you need it, why didn't you... oh, wait
composer install -> same
well, * looks left, looks right * --ignore-platform-reqs
but still getting the chills from a new project, now I go sleep and tomorrow I start my journey to get back to business, wish me luck -

What's everyone's favorite operating system? I've been using Ubuntu for years now and I actually have no idea why as I have no real reason to be using it other than people tell me it is good.
What is everyone's favorite (unix) OS and why?1 -
is there a particular reason why I loose the Ubuntu (or gnome idk) settings app when I uninstall cheese in my Ubuntu-budgie VM?
cheese is just a webcam program right?1 -
Where is the mac vs ubuntu vs windows war for developers? I am a Windows user (on a dell latitude e5570), but I am considering a new laptop because everyone says macbooks are great and outperform windows (which on gradle builds is true).
I mainly use my laptop only for developing and programming things like: full-stack, Android and a little bit of deeplearning/ML.
So which one would you recommend and why? These are pretty heavy tasks, from my opinion.10 -
Update on the HP Stream tablet:
I finally realized that I could have a microSD card in the device with the Onboard package on it to install on a LiveUSB in order to install anything.
Due to another 'ranter's suggestion, I started with all the Debian spins, but none of them had a graphical .deb package installer (which is really strange).
I finally went back to Ubuntu MATE, which does have the Onboard application already installed (which I'm not sure why I didn't notice that the first time), and it's now officially installing...
More updates at 11. -
I'm a part designer so I need to have Illustrator/Photoshop on my machines, so I need to have a windows with WSL with ubuntu on it.
All's nice, except sometimes it just ends up in some high level of bug sorcery.
I have a file, let's say, D:/project/image.svg. WSL sees it as /mnt/d/project/image.svg. For some reason, today I reached a point where WSL version was different form the windows one. So I had to literally open the same file twice and copy-paste it from windows to ubuntu. Before that I was trying to commit changes to git from WSL but it didn't see any - and I kept wondering why they don't get updated on the site.
Honestly, I'm at the verge of declaring that programming is actually magic.4 -
android devs/linux users, a quick help is needed.
My Ubuntu is not detecting my phone for debugging , but rather its just charging it.
(My phone should show a notification of being connected as a MTP device, but nops, it is not detecting laptop at all, it connects as if I have connected it to a charger)
This problem just started today, idk how or why...6 -
I've spent weeks trying to figure out how to set up Visual Shit 2017 with wxWidgets and still haven't figured it out. None of those settings I modified (project properties) worked at all. Months, probably, but just gave up at the end everytime. Nothing I tried worked, but the first time I tried setting it up for CodeLite on Ubuntu, it worked like a charm. All I wanted was to be able to develop cross-platform applications with wxWidgets, was it really that hard? I haven't even thought about cross-compilation from Ubuntu for Windows yet, the very though fills me with dread.
Why the fuck is it so hard to develop something so simple using Windows?1 -
Is docker even suitable for anything that isn't deployment?
So much time, so much effort, so much trial and error, and I still feel like I don't know what Docker is for.
I had a development VirtualBox machine, which I used just to compile my code and test my application. So I said "why don't I just use Docker? It would be way simpler". Also because that fucking Virtualbox image was like 10GB, and it was slow af.
The VirtualBox machine wasn't created by me, but it was just given to me by a previous developer, so I just had to imagine what I needed and pick up the pieces. In few hours I was ready with my Dockerfile.
So I tried it, and....... obviously it didn't work. I entered inside my container and I tried to manually execute commands in order to see where it breaks, and I tried to fix each of them. They were just the usual Linux dependencies problems, incompatibility among libraries, and so on.
Putting everything in order, I started over again with a virgin Ubuntu image, and I tried to fix every single error that appeared, I typed something like 1 hundred commands just to have my development machine up and running.
Now I have a running container that works, I don't know how to reproduce it with a Dockerfile, and I don't know what I'm supposed to do with it, because I'm afraid that any wrong command could destroy the container and lose all the job I did. I can't even bind folders because start/exec doesn't support bindings, so I've to copy files.
Furthermore, the documentation about start/exec is very limited, and every question on StackOverflow just talks about deployment. So am I wrong? Did I use containers for something that wasn't their main purpose? What am I supposed to do now? I'm lost, I feel so much stupid.
Just tell me what to do or call a psychologist8 -
Ok, so for past 1 whole day I am trying to make vhost work on my brand new laptop, running Ubuntu 16.04 LTS... When I installed OS, I've set hard disk encryption, and on top of it - user home folder encryption. Don't ask me why I did both.
Setting up vhost is simple and straight forward - I did it hundreds, maybe thousands of times, on various Linux distros, server and desktop releases alike.
And of course, as it usually happens, opposed to all logic and reason - setting up virtual host on this machine did't work. No matter what I do - I get 403 (access not allowed).
All is correctly set - directory params in apache config, vhost paths, directory params within vhost, all the usual stuff.
I thought I was going crazy. I go back to several live servers I'm maintaining - exactly the same setup that doesn't work on my machine. Google it, SO-it, all I can see is exactly what I have been doing... I ended up checking char by char every single line, in disbelief that I cannot find what is the problem.
And then - I finally figured it out after loosing one whole day of my life on it:
I was trying to setup vhost to point to a folder inside my user's home folder - which is set to be encrypted.
Aaaaaand of course - even with all right permissions - Apache cannot read anything from it.
As soon as I tried any other folder outside my home folder - it worked.
I cannot believe that nobody encountered this issue before on Stackoverflow or wherever else.9 -
Why is it so fucking impossible to install SINGLE packages for texlive on ubuntu when my windows (miktex) can do that on its own?!?!

Why, WHY WHYYYY does my Behat installation works perfectly on Debian, Ubuntu, Windows 7, 8 and 10, but not on this MOTHERFUCKING CENTOS PIECE OF SHIT??
Fuck, I hate loosing my days running after Github issues2 -
Why is VSC such an incredible fucking piece of shit that I literally can not open any ubuntu files with it if I have WSL installed I can't believe I have to spend 30 minutes on trying to open a fucking folder which would not be necessary in the first place if the VS Code terminal was not so fucking shit and full of bugs that I am unwilling to work with it it's like the mentally disabled sibling of the ubuntu terminal2
