Visual Studio sucks.
Atom sucks.
Sublime Text sucks.
Windows Movie Maker is the real editor for code.33 -
Got this shirt today 😎 super happy and excited 🤓 I am definitely going to wear this one tomorrow 😀5
-
How Microsoft devs think about Linux 😁.
This was found inside the index.html of Visual Studio Code editor.9 -
I was at a web development competition in Helsinki when representative of Microsoft comes by my desk and suddenly says:
"I see, you are using Visual Studio Code. How it is?"
"It's great.", I answer.
"YES! Finally, we have done something right."
The point being that even Microsoft's own employees know how carbage their products can be. *Cough* *Caugh* Windows.14 -
Visual Studio Code is the reason that minimized hatred for Microsoft in my Heart <3
VSCode is love!10 -
Visual Studio 2017rc is so good that I'm beginning to hate 2015.
code preview, installation speed, startup without hiccups.
EVERYTHING IS SO FRIGGIN SMOOTH IMMA CRY.13 -
How can testing and debugging 10000 lines of uncommented, obfuscated code get worse?
Testing and debugging 10000 lines of uncommented, obfuscated code in visual studio.5 -
Please Java and all java shit, take more memory I don't need it -_-
16GB doesn't seem to be enough to have a VM and Android Studio Open but it is more than enough to have
1. Visual Studio
2. SQL Server Management Studio
3. VM
4. FireFox
5. Visual Studio code
Fuck. This. Shit!20 -

WHY IS MICROSOFT SO FUCKING AWFUL IN EVERYTHING IT DOES? WHY THE FUCK IS THERE NO AUTOMATIC VERSIONING LIKE EVERY CIVILIZED BASIC FUCKING IDE THAT EVER EXISTS? WHY DO I HAVE TO FUCKING MANUALLY VERSION MY FUCKING FILES? WHY THE FUCKING FUCK IS VISUAL STUDIO FUCKING GOING TO A FILE I USED 300 YEARS AGO WHEN I DEBUG AN APPLICATION? MOST USELESS, UNINTUITIVE PIECE OF SHIT SOFTWARE IVE EVER USED. IF YOU ARENT USING SOME GODDAMN SERVER SOLUTION TO KEEP TRACK WITH YOUR PROJECT VERSIONS, GOOD EVER FUCKING LUCK RECOVERING LOST CODE BECAUSE FUCKING MICROSOFT CANT DO WHAT FUCKING INTELLIJ DID 5 MILLION FUCKING YEARS AGO24

HAI
Just published LOLCODE language support for Visual Studio Code. One of the most satisfying moment of my life.
Link : https://marketplace.visualstudio.com/...
KTHXBYE7 -
So simple, but so brilliant!
I love the new code editor in Visual Studio 2017. 😁
(when you hover on a dotted line you see a preview of the part of code where it starts)6 -
Me, Linux guy, who likes.. really likes..
Visual Studio..Code.
Visual Studio Code.
👍Well done "Tiles Corp.".9 -
Me: Can't wait to try out the changes I've made to the code.
Visual Studio: Let me compile your code from scratch so you can sit there for half an hour like a dumb fuck.7 -
Visual Studio Code is taking over the world. Every Google Dev I see is using it, especially for angular/node.
Bdw, I've been using it (T'S) for the past 24 and I'm loving it.
Never thought I'd say this for anything Microsoft. 😂16 -
Any other front-end developers check out Visual Studio Code? It’s got a lot of really nice features, including the absolute best implementation of Emmet I’ve ever seen. My new favorite editor on both Windows and Mac!12
-
Just trying Visual Studio Code because of it's first product from Microsoft that are totally free😂😂😂12
-
why i like c#?
1- easiest way to build a program with good GUI. just put some XAML code and it's done.
2- I love syntax of c#. it has types. god I hate php XD
3- C# is also fast and strong.
4- don't forget the .net framework that has almost every thing I need.
3- A god like IDE, the Visual Studio.32 -
Visual Studio Code. I went in expecting to hate it, but gave it a chance due to good reviews. Been hooked for months now.
Surprised to see Microsoft create such a slick Dev tool.4 -
Atom is free.
Visual Studio Code is free.
Jetbrains IntelliJ IDEA Ultimate is $500 per year.
Atom has Teletype.
Visual Studio / Code has LiveShare.
Jetbrains IntelliJ has "Can you send me over the file and I'll try to figure out the issue without any sort of context?"27 -
I've been using atom for a long time. At work I recently switched to visual studio code. I really hate Microsoft... But I really love visual studio code!14

.... sad dev life
anyone here with the same problem?14 -
Visual Studio Code.
I've tried you because of hearing a lot of good stuff about you. I'd switch back to netbeans regardless because I love netbeans and I always try to use as little as possible from companies like Google/microsoft/facebook (and others) but what you're pulling right now is un-fucking-believable.
I've disabled ANY AND EVERY form of calling home I could (find) in your settings. Crash reports, automatic updates, metrics, you name it. I've searched all the fucking settings but I can't find any other home calling thing that's enabled and yet:
I'm monitoring every goddamn DNS request (through my own DNS server) and I'm still seeing calls to a Microsoft owned domain. Closed all my browser sessions and you as well and it stopped. Started browser again but not you, nothing.
Started you again: BAM. Calls to that damned Microsoft owned domain again.
If you can't honour my decision for disabling any form of home calls, go fuck yourself.
Netbeans, I'm back, I've missed you 💜35 -
Mom bought me this mousepad... Written in visual basic...
What's worse is that the code has five lines that have been commented out5 -
I am seriously getting pissed off at these so called web developers on Instagram... More often than not I stumble upon an image of vs code with some Lorem ipsum code on the screen.
Just now I saw a picture that drew my attention, so I clicked on to the profile and fuck me in the rectum from a 90 degree angle this is what I see. Visual communication does not FUCKING EQUAL WEB DEVELOPMENT.
DAMN IT, JUST FUCK OFF.15 -
Oh my fucking god.
How can you, after 2 decades as a developer, still produce code to this very day that has that many warnings and suggestions that Visual Studio lights up like a bloody pinball machine from all the squiggly lines!?!
Take your craft seriously or find something else to do!9 -
Will add better photos in the comments!
A client of mine received an spoofed email from their domain. It was a
script with visual basic source code.
Maybe someone here can explain what the script does?
Client didn't opened the file!25 -
Visual Studio : Not all code paths return a value
Me : That method is only with a single line, and it's a return with the value. Don't fucking kidding me.10 -

I used to be someone who disliked microsoft and windows, but with the new CEO Satya Nadella things are going in the right direction. Really love the stuff microsoft is doing right now! bash for windows, 24 bit color console, visual studio code and the monaco editor, dotnet core ... lately I have switched to windows 10 from OSX and I couldn't be happier :)17 -
Started using visual studio code last night for PHP development. So far I’m liking it a lot. The number of plugins available is ridiculous.8
-
Holy fuck. Didn't realise how slow Android studio was until I started using visual code with the command line tools. 😮6
-
Employer: "Welcome to your internship. We need you to code VBA"
Me: "Ok."
Me internally: "Oh. Visual Studio. Ok."
Me internally after 1h of coding VBA in Excel Plugin: "Burn in hell MS"2 -
Finally fixed a major bug.....
FUCK YOU C# AND YOUR FUCKING CASE SENSITIVE BULLSHIT.
DAYS
THAT TOOK FUCKING DAYS AND AT NO POINT DUD VISUAL STUDIO BOTHER TO MENTION THAT FUCKING ERROR.
1 CHARACTER, ON ONE LINE, EFFECTIVELY BROKE THOUSANDS OF LINES OF CODE
fuck this, I quit. See you next time you contact the Microsoft live support chat!13 -
Visual studio 2017 with Xamarin:
* writing some sweet code, life is good.. build and run.
*change int age to 2, build, build failed, no single message why.
*clean, clean failed, no single message why.
* build rebuild clean all or by project, nothing works, no single message why.
*change nothing, restart VS, build success !
* writing some code, same problem
*restart VS, "this project is not compatible with Visual Studio"
Good bye guys, I'm gonna kill myself7 -
I have rather been enjoying MS Visual Studio Code of late. Ten years ago when I was deep in my Linux phase the thought of anything Microsoft would make me burst into flames.
Question - Am I now evil, having turned my back on sublime text, atom and a plethora of other editors?15 -
Learning to code in Visual Studio with such lame examples that I literally have to minimize my screen so that no one mocks me. #beginnerproblems13
-
Hololens development forced me into Visual Studio after spending years doing Unity development with MonoDevelop in MacOS.
Why haven't anyone told me to switch sooner! Thanks to Visual Studio + ReSharper, my brain farts turn into a coherent code almost automatically.
I hate that I need MacOS for the iOS development and Win 10 for Hololens. Running Win 10 on Parallels kinda works, but it is a compromise. Developing without headphones/earplugs is out of the question if you don't want to go deaf.
I wan't all the tools for a single OS so I don't have to maintain multiple computers and even more importantly travel with multiple laptops. Just love the security check question "Do you have any electronics with you? Please put it into the container." - "Could I get a couple more containers, please..."9 -
Omg visual studio is a piece of SHIT!
I'd rather code java in eclipse than another line of c# in visual studio.
Once you work in IntelliJ other IDE's are awful.5 -
I was helping my girlfriend's sister on her programming homework yesterday. But the thing is that she missed a lot of classes to be with her boyfriend. So now she has a reasonably advanced task, without knowing the basics.
Her assignment was to open a file, extract it's text, and count how many times an user-given word appeared on it. So here's how it went:
- so you use the input function to ask the user to type the word.
- ok, but where do I type the word?
- in that black screen, on the bottom of visual code
~ changes name of the variable that receives the input()~
-like that?
- no, that is just the variable name. You should type in that black screen AT THE BOTTOM OF VISUAL CODE
- oh, ok.
~ changes name of .py file ~14 -
Had been hunting for a "modern" editor, mostly for browsing code and quick edits. Can't believe that the one that actually fit my requirements was Microsoft's VS Code. On Linux!14
-
I tried vim for a few weeks. I almost used to it. But I didn't see how I could be more productive with it than with Visual Studio Code, at all, so I switched back. Maybe because I'm super fast with my mouse because of my 2500 hours of Dota. But knowing how to use vim is super useful when doing remote stuff via SSH. Nano too basic.13
-
Soo I prefer to code with lot of colours (syntax or curly braces guideline) on my screen, can anyone shares some good extensions or tools for that?
P.S. I’m using visual studio on windows -
All the Jeff Bezos and Pichai fanboys aside .. we really should appreciate Nadella for the work he has done with the mess left by the Steve Ballmer .. 🤔 especially with all the developments now .. visual studio code , GitHub embracing the open source market and understanding Microsoft's customer , market trends and what a true consumer product is. What say ?10
-
Every time when I double click a .cs file and Visual Studio begins to load.... Noooo! Stop. I just want to look at the code for 5 seconds. I don‘t need VS for that! Damn!5
-
Hello everybody. First time ranter, so please be nice.
Starting off with a classic: text editors.
I'm mainly a .net developer, so I mostly use Visual Studio (with vim key bindings), and (g)vim for everything else. However, visual studio code is slowly winning me over. It's sleek, it's pretty, and does a lot of cool stuff. It doesn't do all that vim does though (or does it in ways I don't yet know), and is slightly less customizable. On the other hand, vim sometimes feels like too much overhead for what I use it for.
What do you guys think? What do you use, and what personal gripes do you have?10 -
I can't believe it took me about 17 years to accidently press the back button on the mouse (mouse button 4?) when Visual Studio had focus. Apparently you can go back to the previous code file by using the back button...4
-
As Karl Lagerfeld once said: "Visual Studio Code is a sign of defeat. You lost control of your life so you use Visual Studio Code."21
-
I just discovered this editor. It's kinda cool :)
Have you ranters used it? What do you have to say about it?31 -
Visual studio code:
Debugging that "just works"
Me after several hours:
Yes! I finally got the vscode debugger to attach!1 -
Looking at broken code you're going to fix:
"I know visual studio, I know...the pain will all be over soon, I promise"1 -
I’m slowly starting to run most of my daily operations & programming in Visual Studio Code.
Here’s an example of me working in markdown files for one of my GitHub projects...directly in VS Code with live preview 👏.7 -
I'm addicted to the Visual Studio shortcut ctrl+K - ctrl+D to automatically format my code and hate it when I pull down the latest version and it's not formatted properly. 😲5

About 8 years ago I had a choice, go developer or system administrator. I chose developer and never looked back.
Then I've spent the last week or so - on and off - perfecting a Boxstarter script to setup our Software Developer laptops, right down to the Visual Studio Code extensions and Visual Studio Code Standards.
Boot up a new computer, join it to the domain and start the script. It's therapeutic to watch.
I actually enjoyed it... am I a closet system administrator?2 -
Took a class on computer systems, was supposed to be taught instruction sets, interrupts, pointers, basic gate level digital logic, etc. Professor spent the whole semester going line by line in the Visual Studio disassembler for some arbitrary C code, explaining in painfully dull detail, what each assembly line did. They did this for every class session, including the first, with no introduction to assembly. I lost count of how many times I fell asleep in class.

Visual Studio Code - ever since the beta.
VS Code is... amazing. There's no words to describe it. It's just amazing.
VSCode since the inception was just this tiny version of Visual Studio that you can transform into your own little IDE. That was the whole point of VSCode - it was a extensible editor. For many years I've used it and never looked back, I still use VS from time to time but Microsoft really nailed this one.
Most of the editors I knew lacked good auto completion and good linting, which IntelliSense was good, and it became even greater once support for languages started piling up. Themes also were top notch, I still remember you can't theme the entire window just the editor, nowadays you can.
And last but not the least is the Remote integration. I didn't need to leave my OS just to do work from another, I just need a SSH agent and it works. It's very straightforward and easy.
Overall Visual Studio Code is a editor that is more about choice and your own style - which makes it unique from IDEs, its fresh and its definitely earned its place as one of the most sought after tools in development.3 -
FYI: pressing alt + up does not move current line up in Microsoft Word. Just realized I am not in Visual Studio Code anymore.6
-
Helping this lady with her Microsoft Access work. Wrote some complex Visual Basic script to make the database look pretty. This is what she is asking:
"Hey, where did you get all this code from? YouTube? Can you please send me the link?"
ffs I'm a dev, why the fuck do you think I need YouTube for this simple VBA script.3 -
fck you visual studio!!! seriously what is wrong with you?!?
~me peacfully writing some code ~
ok let's see what we did
vs: I can't compile that. The key whateverKey in line 15 is not defined.
me: ok let's investigate...
nowhere in line 15 use whateverKey.... ok....
wait I didn't change that file at all.
~me clicking rebuild solution~
vs: can't build that because of whateverKey in line 15.
me : WTF?!?
checking git diff -> file not changed
me okkkkkkk......
closing visual studio and reopening solution.
Build succeeded.
What the actuall hell?!?
I'm spending way too much time trying to get that shity peace of software to do what it is supposed to do!6 -
Been asked if we can make a few "minor tweaks" to a Visual Basic 6.0 application last worked on in 2013.
I haven't coded in Visual Basic in approximately 20 years, the project can't be opened in Visual Studio 2012 or above and the code I've seen is a dumpster fire.
Please send help.4 -
Just discovered that Visual studio code supports regions in HTML!!!!!!!
My eyes and organisation are very thankful for this!8 -
Hours lost.
Visual Studio test adapter was failing out during the discover phase of the tests with a stack overflow exception, but that's all the information it gave me. The tests simply would not run.
Hunting through the code line by line, I eventually find this.
WHY IS THIS ALLOWED TO COMPILE4 -
It is sad to say, but programming in C# using Visual Studio basically consists of clicking buttons, dragging and dropping files and checking / unchecking checkboxes in order to get everything generated.
Where are to good old days, when code still had to be typed. :(19 -
Hey Visual Studio, WHY THE FUCK DO YOU THINK MY CODE IS SUDDENLY READ ONLY YOU BLOATED PIECE OF SHIT5
-
Upon finding out that Visual Studio (not Visual Studio Code) had stomped on the file association for .TOML, and spending a good couple of minutes trying to shut it down..4
-
well, fuck... how about everything that works in visual studio but feels like garbage in VS Code???
don't get my wrong I use VS Code for every other language... but C# has just always felt better in visual studio than in VS Code. oh well9 -
Build failed
Click build solution again
Build works.
I can't tell if it's me, the code, windows updates or visual studio updates but something fucked up.1 -
Oh my FUCKING GOD i HATE VISUAL STUDIO CODE, I just wanted to FUCKING OPEN A C++ CLASS IN VISUAL STUDIO 2019 FROM UNREAL ENGINE but for some FUCKING REASON my SCRIPT EDITOR WAS SET TO FUCKING VS CODE, and now 80% of my FUCKING CPU is being FUCKING USED AND I CAN'T FUCKING CLOSE IT AND ITS FUCKING FROZEN SO I CAN'T EVEN EDIT THE CLASS AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA anyways thankyou for coming to my ted-talk8
-
I feel like I'm the only person in the world who likes Visual Code from Microsoft as my default editor, I'm considering scrapping Atom for it.5
-
I was just asked to correct a bug in a form, so I opened up Visual Studio, loaded the projekt, and opened up the code for the form to start debugging:
3500 lines of code in one form!
Encapsulation and classes are fresh ideas...from 30 or 40 years ago!2 -
Windows 10 just randomly rebooted for updates while I was typing. Code. Into Visual Studio. WITH LOTS OF UNSAVED CHANGES!
W. T. F. MICROSOFT? How could you even call this a "product"?!4 -
Classmate was crying, I asked her several times why are you crying. She kept saying I won't understand. I asked why can't I ?.
Because you never loved someone.
My DEV ass got triggered, and said have you ever tried Linux and Visual studio code ? -
Building a website using Wordpress and Visual Composer for a client is pretty easy, right?!
Until the clients wants to change one of the icons to sofa “you can’t use image, and visual composer has a list of only 5 icon libraries and none of them has a fucking sofa icon”.
Manager says just do it today!
Ok no problem.. just had to figure how visual composer communicate with the libraries to show them in the module area, edit the function, create the font/svg files for the new icon, edit the css file of one of the libraries to add the icon. And boom its working fine!
No tutorial about this stuff so had to figure it out by reading the code and see how they did it so I can do it.
After finishing this, they just gave me few more changes as I have done nothing.
Thank you5 -
Are there more people here who prefer codual over visual?
UML diagrams are fun and all, but I personally prefer to have a code example over an uml diagram when it comes to a few classes that work together. Not exactly sure why I prefer it that way, in my head I translate uml to code in order to understand it better and if you show me a piece of code I don't have to do that translation.
I wonder what you guys' thoughts are 🤔5 -
As a .NET dev I get questioned about using VS Code in favor of full-blown VS. My arguments are that it is faster, lightweight and overall more user-friendly.
I use it exclusively, for all types of files and projects (JSON, SQL, Angular projects, .NET Core, ...)
Do you guys like using VS Code as well? What do you use it for?
Also, if you ever want to annoy a colleague, try associating all file extensions with Visual Studio and watch him go bonkers.7 -
This post is now dedicated for a comment debate with the topic "Is Visual Studio Code an IDE?"
I 'll see myself out. Make the comments rain8 -
Just a short "dafuq?" about VS Code.
I have a MacBook Pro from last year, so it's a capable machine. And there I was today, sitting on the train, coding some Python in VS Code.
Suddenly it got all laggy. Like, one second behind my typing, dropping keystrokes, stuttery scrolling... the whole deal. The system itself was perfectly responsive and the activity manager showed the CPU at 30%. After a minute or so, it magically recovered and worked as if nothing ever happened.
What the actual fuck was VS Code doing? I mean, it's a fucking text editor. In 2019 this should be a bloody solved problem! There's absolutely no reason to use around 30% CPU in the first place, and use that much and still *lag*. Holy crap, and people ask with a straight face "what's wrong with reinventing everything based on web technologies?" Fuck everything Electron-based. Make it ElectrOFF already.
*takes deep breath*
So, editor suggestions are welcome. I used Sublime Text 3 before VS Code, I'll likely return to that.18 -
Whenever I get to switch from vs code to a jetbrains IDE, I remember what the difference between a text editor on crack and an actual IDE is. Jetbrains IDEs are just such a blessing.
Visual Studio is still a piece of shit though :)7 -
Getting to know Vim Editor for university. Do you think switching from visual studio code to Vim is a good method for learning? Do you know any good Vim courses?12

Holy MOTHERF-er. Visual Studio Code is soooo amazing, never thought I'd like it so much cuz I never gave it a chance :o. So many useful plugins10 -
Visual studio is rather silly.
In one project, just changing the character set to unicode was enough for the program to work.
In another project, exact same code, I also needed to add a command-line argument to enable unicode.
Isn't. That. Just. Silly.4 -
I have done something super sacrilegious.
I switched from VIM to VSCode on my Linux box. I got tired of having to constantly configure a tool when I wanted it to GTFO so I could focus on code.
VSCode is the only major tool I couldn't give up from leaving Windows. You get brownie points here Microsoft.
VSCode + VIM plugin + Fira Code + Linux = happiness.2 -
What do you guys think about Visual Studio Code?
I personally like it, just wondering your opinions.11 -
Never knew VS live share can do so much! Pair programming becomes so much easier now!
In case you are a VS code peasant like me:
Visual Studio Live Share Can Do That? https://smashingmagazine.com/2018/... -
I had a friendly argument with a person over comparing visual studio with Xcode, the first thing that came into my mind when he said visual studio was visual studio code (keep in mind visual studio and visual studio code are completely different visual studio is an ide while visual studio code is a code editor )
I was arguing that there’s no point comparing an ide specifically made for iOS app dev with a code editor with intellisense with better code predictions as it would have made more sense if he was comparing a code editor with another code editor like atom or sublime.
This argument went on for a couple of mins in a group chat
Later on I found out he was talking about visual studio and not visual studio code which actually is an ide used for app dev.
This whole time I thought he was talking about vs code and he thought I was talking about visual studio 😂
I ended up agreeing it was my mistake for not getting the message in the first place 😂3 -
> Help novice programmer with his task
> Compile his code
> Start it via Visual Studio
> Visual Studio freezes
> Get Blue Screen
> Lose work of over one week
How do you guys relax when something like this happens besides smashing your keyboard against somebodys head?9 -
Atom vs Visual Studio Code
What are you using and why?
I'm currently on Atom and wanna try out VSCode. Having looked at the settings (Holy fu**, are there many of 'em) I feel kind of lost.28 -
In C# using "this."
WHY? It doesn't help with readability. It just clutters up the code and adds nothing.
It should never be a required prefix.
What makes it worse is, Visual Studio greys it out because its not required!
Then there is stylecop. This got enabled on our project which generated 3000 build errors because of missing "this."9 -
I've been using visual studio for years and always found debugging pretty fun. At my new job I have to use xcode and FUCK DEBUGGING IN THAT ILLEIGBLE SHIT TIER DEBUGGER. and fuck objective-c, at least you can ignore the objective part and just code c..
I never thought I would say this, but damn, I miss Microsoft.9 -
Our teacher is forcing us to code in an outdated version of a really bad IDE to write basic C, we can't use anything else!
The IDE is bad and crashes often, and I can't even do anything about it!
I suggested various IDE such as visual studios but nope!10 -
Helping out a friend how to code, and he said:
"Can't we just use a string? An array is just like a string anyway."
We were looking at some setting types in Visual Studio. -
I spent 2 hours googling and scratching my head trying to implement asyc Tast<ActionResult> on asp.net MVC. I even copy and paste the exact sample code and still didn't work. It turns out that "Visual studio for Mac" doesn't support asynchronous calls.6
-
Visual Studio Code !!
It has tons of features, form keybinding, to language support
I just love the inbuilt terminal support
And with git integration and some plugins, there's absolutely no need for separate git client -
I absolutely love the work put into Visual Studio Code.
It is a great editor, which evolves quickly and has a nice community.
Was using vim for literally everything and switched at some point to VS code and love using it since2 -
Every morning I start visual studio code from cmd... So I wanted to make a script to open that specific folder and start it in code...
The time I spent trying to make this thing is longer than the time it would take me to start code every morning.
Guess I'm no hackerman :/9 -
I don't want to use Visual Basic!
I'm a 17 year old boy and I have a couple of years of experience with coding. At school we had to choose between a couple of things to do 2 hours every week. One of them was about computers and programming. Sounds fun, right?
The teacher is letting us code in Visual Basic in MS Excel. I tried to explain him that I know how to code, but he still wants me to listen to him.
He doesn't even use any indentation! I can't look at it and I don't want to use VB it sucks just let me use js or anything else but not VB! Why won't you just accept I'm 10 times better than you! Just let me do my thing!
Now he thinks he can challenge me with a password strength checker. I want to use js, some regex to make it very short and efficient and a nicely styled web page. But now I'll be forced to use a horrible programming language (VB) I never used before!24 -
*using random JS for website*
*finds stuff not working*
*opens JS file*
(mesh of code)
*select all*
*Format Selection*
I love you, Visual Studio :')4 -
I fucking hate Visual Studio!
Don't get me wrong, from time to time I actually enjoy it but not today.
It all went south when I tried to add a new handler to an fucking old asp.net webpage. I had the access the 'Range' headed to stream bits of audio and video files to the client. It was working absolutely fine for the first hour and a half, after that point the fun started...
VS decided that my source code and the binaries won't match anymore. Everytime I tried to add a fucking breakpoint or debug this cunt of an error it would just refuse
The worst part that made me go apeshit was when I finally got a breakpoint and the exception. Some unknown fucking system dll just kept on killing my thread without a proper error message because it's optimized to the fucking moon and back!
Any ideas from the devs here on what's going on and how the fuck I can fix this?6 -
I just used Visual studio c++ for the first time. In comparison to intellij it just sucks, so many features are missing, im fighting with the editor all the time.. For example Code completion, visual studio suggests me the method name, i press enter, new line inserted, wtf? Apparently only tab is working here, next try, visual studio suggests method, I click tab, method name inserted but whithout brackets, omg. The standard shortcut for commenting out code is CTRL+K followed by CTRL+C, if you want to use the code again you need to use CTRL+K followed by CTRL+U. HOW STUPID IS THIS? Refactoring of code, e.g. Method names also sucks...5
-
All right, I switched to Visual Studio Code from Sublime Text 3 and I really like it so far. But I have spent an hour looking for a solution to hide this annoying tab bar. I have already disabled tabs but it still shows this bar with filename on it.12

To all guys who write shitty code:
if (false)
I just found that when compiling for Release mode in Visual Studio the JIT compiler eliminates this:
Dead code elimination - A statement like if (false) { /.../ } gets completely eliminated.
And a lot of other similar stuff2 -
Google acquired two interesting products companies last week.
One is making customizable phone apps from spreadsheets the other is gathering sales data from local shops.
appsheet and pointy
At this point I think they’re still missing code editor. Microsoft have visual studio and amazon as always was first and acquired c9.io when vscode was one year old.
How the fuck they missed the code that would run remotely on multiple machines should have ability to connect to one node with debugger after they fucked docker with their k8s.6 -
When you want to use Visual Studio Code so bad, but you're waiting for them adding minimap feature.4

I've been working on a shader for the past few days. Lots of doing math on paper and switching to code to implement it. Yesterday after 3 or 4 hours of trying to figure out why nothing is rendering, I realized that I wrote all my * for multiplication as x. Visual Studio never let me know its a syntax error, and my fried brain saw no issue. Needless to saw my shader is still bugged to hell, but at least my multiplication works.3

One time I had to review some SAP / Excel / Visual Basic toolchain.
It was a huge mess with like 10 layers of if-then cases in around 1000 lines of code analyzing excel sheets, resolving error codes etc. in maybe two functions.
It turned out that I programmed that code about 8 years ago :/ -
I've yet to see a developer use visual studio code in one of my projects instead of webstorm/intellij and not fuck up the code formatting in their first commits. Ffs use the damn editorconfig file people.
Also please use an ide that shows you warnings and unused imports I'm tired of cleaning this crap up5 -
Ban visual programming programs, like scratch after the fist month introduce them to enhanced Google search strings and let them code on the command line going from imperative, over functional to object oriented programming styles using languages suited for the current style. Not like using Java from the get go. I hated it, waiting until everyone got to the point where they kind of understood the logic but failed at using correct syntax and efficient coding styles.
-
Anyone here knows whether this is valid?
This is the default code for a new Visual Studio C++ Console Project.20 -
When you accidentally revert (ankhSVN in visual studio) changes in code, and you lose all the code you just wrote. That feeling in the pit of your stomach... And the hot sweat/silent cursing... I fixed it so it's all good :).4
-
A project that is used across our company with multiple clients. It's huge, over 2million lines of code and 116 separate projects. Not a single piece of documentation. Took me three weeks to track down where the authentication occurred with visual debugging and mapping tools.2
-
Anyone else notice that the error checking in Visual Studio sucks sometimes? I'll see the error pop up in the editor, read what it's complaining about, double check all the code, think for a minute, get confused about it, comment out some stuff - wait no, it wasn't that, uncomment it....
then save the file and it rescans. Boom, error gone. It was just a phantom error wasting my time.3 -
Visual Studio Code + Mac = not lightweight, really not that good performance
I mean the battery is burning. Literally, i plug my mac out and after a hour the battery is dead10 -
Visual Studio Code, nano for terminal editing, don't know how to use Vim (I like using my mouse thanks)4
-
Switched to Visual Studio Code as my main editor when not using an IDE and really enjoy it way more than I thought5
-
- My C++ only, Visual Studio 2017 needs to update.
-"sure why not"
- The update needs to download 1.84 GB.
- huh, maybe i can take advantage and uninstall the Node.js tools i don't need anymore (VS Code does better job)
- Now the update + uninstall needs 2.05GB to download.
- The update also contains ASP.NET crap, i don't even have installed the web tools or neither the .NET development platform!.
What?. -
Do you know a good application to code like software program Visual Studio code, Atom and others ?12
-
Visual studio code
I usually use IDEs and am in love with everything made by Jetbrains. I am also to lazy to setup dual boot on my pc, so I live with windows 10. After one of the recent downgrades Microsoft distribute, they shipped this lightweight text editor called visual studio code with it.
It lied to me, that it's a good editor for coding C. It even tells me that I can compile and execute the code from inside the editor, similar to vim. I went to the settings and found a dark theme, for the best best feature this "editor"has to offer.
I give it a try by opening a source file with a normal double click. Editor gets focused, but the code is nowhere to be seen. Retrying conforms my, that this piece of shit is literally not able to open files UNLESS you drag and drop them into the editor. HOW FUCKING USELESS IS THAT?
Next I want to compile the program. Guess what, that functionality was not given or at least I could not find it (same goes with the manual)
Even with dark theme it burns my eyes to use this editor. There are almost no useful shortcuts. The functionality is not even comparable to vim. I always thought eclipse was bad, until this shit was installed.
It might work well for other people. Maybe it has functions, that just don't work on my pc, but from what I've seen: visual studio in general and especially that editor feels like Microsoft trying to replace the toolet paper with sandpaper.8 -
I wrote a complex function in my source code, Visual Studio stop working and i lost the function. I'm so furios!!!!7
-
My dad was using notepad to edit some HTML for his website. I downloaded Visual Studio Code and he likes it SO MUCH MORE. (I wonder why....).
Kinda happy I could help him with it. He is pretty good at coding but just hasn't done it in a while (not his trade) so he doesn't know all the new tools and such.3 -
I really want 2017 to be a great year...
One thing I do is have a movie marathon ... Last few years I did the Hobbit movies ...
I can't think what to do to start of this year 🤔
I'm already building this site ... For new year's day but I dunno what to watch to get me in the spirit , any suggestions ?5 -
Okay, Visual Studio 2022 IntelliSense is actually pretty great and is one of the best implementations of a code suggestion service without getting in the way that I have ever seen.4
-
Ok, all of us have seen the memes about how nasty Stack Overflow can be, this is why I usually try to find an existing SO post to read instead of making one. This time however, I found an error that I couldn't fix. A nasty C runtime error. I decided to ask a SO question for help, and awaited answers. I came back, and the question had been flagged to require more info, so I added more. I came back later, and someone told me I was doing it the hard way, and I should be using Visual Studio (I'm on Visual Studio Code), which ticks me off, because I don't want to use the hacky way around the problem, then this same person closed the question! They didn't even answer it, they just offered a simple workaround then closed without an answer. Man, SO sucks sometimes.15
-
This one is easy, being forced to use visual studio! In fact I made one or two rants about it.
To top it off using NuGet as a pm was also not a great experience to say the least.
Luckily I was not alone and my team agreed and we rewrote the entire legacy code in Java... A much much better experience!
So that was my worst experience.. My best experience was that I started my first big non-school related project and I am super excited!! -
Typescript integration in Visual Studio SUCKS!! I waste so much time fucking trying to set up Angular 2 boilerplate that would take almost no time in VS Code or another editor because this bloated piece of garbage has to try and hack everything into MS build tasks and "Virtual Projects".
You would think that the company that created Typescript could figure out how to integrate it properly into their flagship IDE!!!
FUUUUCCCCCKKKKK!!1 -
Nothing better than stay at home during a thunderstorm, writing some shit in VS and drinking some whisky
-
Is there any extension for visual studio code that allows markdown to be exported as proper linked TOC PDF? I have tried now atleast 5 different combinations, pandoc, convert markdown etc. and they all produce either really non matching content (pandoc) or don't link the table of contents right. (but atleast show the content 1:1 of what the preview is..)2
-
Lets start the night with Visual Studio Code.
Passed 30 min and github not synced.
Should i kill myself?4 -
I just downloaded a bunch of code editors. Ive been using VSC for a long time, and im looking if I should switch. Which one are you using, and why? 😊22
-
Cheese and crackers this is the worst code I’ve ever seen... i hated visual basic before but when it’s written by incompetent devs it’s 1000 times worse. Brb going to go tear my eyes out before trying to debug this shit code.3
-
Build failed: "CL.exe has exited with exit code 5"
Thank you Visual Studio for the detailed error report about why the build fails! I can finally fix it!
(This is not fixable by running VS as administrator, also the output file is not running nor locked by some process)2 -
Load tests:
I'm used to do load tests in Visual Studio where it gives which line is exactly your bottleneck. But now I'm using VS Code (visual studio requires enterprise license for load tests :\ no longer have one)
Anyways long story short, what are the best practices for load tests? For me what I'm testing is how much can a given hardware specs handle and when test fails I go back and check if code can be optimized, is this the correct way to do this?7 -
FUNNY
Yesterday i was watching the intro videos of Visual Studio Code.
Was interesting to see a Microsoft licensed product using YouTube (Google) and macs (Apple) for demonstrations. Maybe Microsoft learned something about not ignore competitors hahaha6 -
Microsoft should have pre-install Visual Studio Code on Windows Platform rather then Code Writer. What is the purpose of Code Writer, anyone?11

Hi all. I'm a developer. I'm new to Opencv using C++. I was asked to Integrate Opencv using C++ into Arduino.Again, I was asked to develop visual effects (filters) when the Opencv is integrate to a touch pad. It's been difficult for me. Pls can someone give me a clue or code to go about this?6

Visual Studio has been one of my all time favorite text editors. This is Visual Studio Code Extensions Setup what I use.
https://roogen.com/visual-studio-co...5 -
I've very recently started coding in C# for a game I'm making and I can say the most common mistake I make is missing one of these little shits ";". I always look at my code like "This looks good to me" then after hours of looking through Visual Studio always comes through to tell me how bad I've messed up.2
-
Arg, Visual Studio 2015, stop trying to fix my comment indentation!
It's a comment and. It is NOT part of the code. Leave my formatting alone!!!3 -
I was assigned to maintain a legacy project today. I downloaded the source code, configured the database server and imported the project in visual Studio. For a tiny, blissful fraction of a second, I expected everything to work on the first try.6
-
Wrote pseudo-code on paper for a year in high school. Didn't understand anything
Next year, realised what the pseudo codes meant in Visual Basic1 -
Have we all been brainwashed to use VS Code? Is there anyone who doesn’t like it? Everywhere I go it’s “you should use VS Code because ‘plugins’ and you don’t have to switch windows when using Terminal. And, we’re moving our toolchain to work with it.”
Well, it sounds to me like you’re trying to hack a Visual Studio IDE on a non-Windows platform, but I digress…
I was going to return to Atom the other day when I discovered that project died near 6 months ago. I’m sad.15 -
Question for web devs. I have to manage a simple php website and I am tired of filezilla+notepad++ combo. I need something more modern. Tried visual studio code+simple ftp integration but it doesn't seem to download some of the folders. Can you advice any other alternative?13

Visual Studio and its compatibility with Linux applications.
I don't know if I'm the only one, but this is my setup:
- Visual Studio 2017 on Windows 10
- Ubuntu 18.04 subsystem on Windows
I just can't do any Linux coding in Visual Studio... it is using my subsystem as a Remote Compiler and debugger, and a simple Hello World program does build and run successfully, but EVERY SINGLE LINE HAS ERRORS! It can't find stdio.h! Not a single include file works! They get auto-completed so it knows where the files are, but apparently opening them to see all the methods is too much for Visual Studio! I'd say the problem has something to do with IntelliSense since only inside the IDE my code has errors, compiling (which happens on the subsystem) works like a charm.2 -
Microsoft has released Visual Studio 2019 version 16.6 with a new IntelliSense Linter to help C++ developers efficiently clean up code.
The tool IntelliSense checks code on the go, using squiggly lines to highlight problems and Lightbulb actions for suggested fixes.
The feature can be enabled in Visual Studio 2019 version 16.6 from the Preview Features within the Tools > Options menu.

VS Code and SourceTree are two of the most used tool by me this year.
SourceTree helps me visualise the git commit history and branches more than git log can.
VS Code, on the other hand helps me with all the short code editing stuff and sometimes even helps when I don't want to open a full fledged IDE for the project. I have setup my own Icon themes for VS Code and even created watchers for files. Can't do this much on Webstorm so easily. -
I was in uni and the lecturer used visual studio 95 and i had 2015 and kept getting errors.when i asked him what was wrong with my code he just told me look for it i wont tell you.i bet he didn't even know.so i just learn through YouTube and other tutorial sites.
-
I didn't know I wanted the breadcrumbs so badly in the new VSCode 1.26.
It's a relief from continually hopping to the explorer and code-outline activity bar. -
With Atom being discontinued I guess I have to start looking for a new IDE.
Visual Studio Code seems to be #1 choice.
I don't get why.
1. Search
It pops up in the small side bar. Can't see which of the findings I am actually interested in.
2. Open file in Solution Explorer
Found the shortcut to open SE after my failed search. Trying to navigate files with keyboard. Enter does not open the file. Neither does CMD+Enter, Option+Enter or Shift+Enter, but CTRL+Enter does! In a new tab which only covers *half* of the window! Wtf.11 -
Soo, our microsoft is the best on the market.... again... Trying to compile C++ code in Visual Studio 2017. I tried restart VS but it won't help..... If I try compile this code in linux it works well... Burn...
Better resolution: https://imgur.com/a/Crv3G3 -
WTF.... did the latest Windows 10 update just screw up Visual Studios 2017....
XAML Designer won't load.... so much for my plans to code....3 -
Remember the days when you had to write your own Main method? And you didn't have to rely on IntelliSense to do the remembering for you? Good times.
-
Hey guys, I want to switch from Windows dev to Linux dev but I am coding game using C# and Monogame's framework. I'd like to know if you think it is possible and viable to code big game projects with vscode ? And is there plugins inside vscode which can add automaticly the framework's needs and create breakpoint step by step for debugging like Visual studio do ?
Thanks for your help ! :)15 -
What IDE do you guys use?
I use notepad++, Codeanywhere and Visual Studio 2017 Pro.
I'm looking for decent code completion with internal referencing to keep track of methods and variable.
Would you recommend staying with VS or how about intelliJ?
Or something new?6 -
So I've been using Visual Studio and I'm really starting to get pissed off at the key combinations.
Like Ctrl+K+Ctrl+D
Just to auto format code. So I'm now thinking of speeding up my workflow by using AutoHotKey which by the way is the best thing ever invented.
If anyone uses VS and is interested in me sharing the ahk script then let me know. I just feel like pressing 4 keys for simple tasks is just a waste of time and easy to forget.3 -
I've come to the conclusion that one of the reasons I enjoy writing code is because I get to use Visual Studio. As a beginner I have no idea how to use most of it, but it makes me feel like a pro! 😉2
-
Remembering of when I first learnt about the importance of version control.
There I was, working in Visual Studio, laptop unplugged; the laptop suddenly shuts down - battery dead. Not too worried, might just have to rewrite a few lines I had not saved. Restart the machine, open VS, the file I was working on now contains strange characters - totally damaged.
Google for help, find a question on stackoverflow with the same issue (comforting moment). The answer I get:
"First question, why wasn't your code on source control?"4 -
I hope people who store data in unstructured binary format without documenting what the the actual logic is have a separate room in hell.
I hate this legacy s***pile of visual basic code that has this abbreviated function names everywhere and the 'developer' (really should be name jack***) instead of documenting his custom solutions just thought out some custom data formats and wrote really long and bad code around it to transform and decode it. Clr sql makes it impossible to debug so wherever you are my dear predecessor I hipe you rot in hell2 -
How I hate all those people who think VisualStudio Code is Open Source. It's not! Read the f*cking license!
https://code.visualstudio.com/licen...
In fact, you aren't even allowed to inspect its network traffic. Not to mention reverse engineering. That's nowhere near OpenSource.
You sure can download the source code, licensed as MIT, but building it won't give you the same piece of software.
Don't believe in everything someone tells you. Use your brain and check the facts.12 -
I loosely set aside Friday evening, Sunday and Monday for a rush job that was supposedly urgent. Monday I was sent the style-guide. It's mandatory to be written with bootstrap. Tuesday 10am, no copy, no images, no idea where the code will go or how it's context's global CSS will cascade over mine. Visual designer says the logo they provided me isn't crisp enough. How many grown adults does it take to screw in a lightbulb? 9?
-
I was browsing google news when i saw a new IDE similar to Visual Code, it is built based on rust, it starts with pcle or pcie i tried hard to find it but i lost it even my damn phone browser didn't save it in history, anyone knows what I'm talking about please 🥺 ?9
-
The LAST stable version of Visual studio was 2019.....
That 2022 is a hot garbage now.....
So many bugs....
Buit I don't know even remotly IDE which I can use insted. VS code ? no thanks.... "First install 1544554 extensions"
I want all in ONE.
Rider ? Fucking joke. Can't even asjust size and font of menus....15 -
I would consider myself a Jedi Knight when it comes to using Visual Studio, but has anybody done any work that sounds like this description? I don't think I've ever wrote code that integrated systems like this.. I'll certainly ask for more information but I'm always surprised by the experience this community has and wanted to see if someone can scare me away from this4

Today the DBA-team (needed to keep our Oracle mess running) decided to change datatypes in tables that has been in production for 20 years. Without a headsup.
Great success!
Just took us 5 hours to debug good ol' visual basic code......
Why would you do such a thing!? -
Well today i went to grab a coffee at starbucks saw my best friend working decided to buy him one too i sit down we start talking and i saw him using visual studio code and asked him why don't you use vim and answered "vim is for programmers that don't know what to do with their life and cant decide what ide they like" i didn't think twice and slapped the shit out of him fuck him. I think i might need a new best friend.12

When I was 14 I saw a book about game programming in Visual Basic for 2$. I decided to get it. With this I wrote my first code, then Pong. Then I started C++ with a book called 'From noone to game coder' (in my language rhymes tho).

Visual Studio Code and xdebug: my saviors to finally not have to put up with NuSphere PhpEd constantly shitting itself over memory limit issues in my 3,704 file PHP project.

Wow, I'm such impressed by the power of Visual Studio with Team Collaboration, DB Management and this impressive packet manager... But it's like "don't try to understand, just code"
-
I hate people forgetting to enable option strict on Visual Basic .NET.
Why the heck does Visual Studio has it disabled by default anyways?!
Only use of disabling it I ever have found is for SignalR, disable it on just the file you need to.
Wait! There's another use, to compile the code of people that doesn't enable it. That is, of course, without rewritting the entire code base! -
Visual Studio is the worst. Ever. I was about a half hour digging into debugging my code, and I was about 8 layers deep into the API, with breakpoints to anchor me to each level. With no warning, Visual Studio crashed and I lost all my breakpoints, and I didn't know which file I left off in. I had to completely restart the debugging process. Visual Studio deserves to burn...4
-
Praise the Jesus/Allah/Buddha/Flying Spaghetti Monster, the newest Visual Studio Code version doesn't require reset after extension installation!1

<3 VS-CODE (:
It's like having a customized tool , well a weapon in that sense 😂😂 Developers like to think of themselves as wizards (including me) and every wizard needs their wands 😋😋3 -
How am i supposed to learn C# if Visual Studio took me 24 hours to install, now that it's installed it crashes every time i build my code, plus, it makes chrome and IE crash every 5 minutes, and it lags as shit?11

Context = VS Code
What is your 'favorite/most useful/the one that saves your ass' extension for visual studio code6 -
Visual Studio Code is a joke.
it's always auto update but always fail and then delete itself.
When i ask what happened or post a discussion on the official site they close it and send /redirect it to fucking different issue like changing language code or adding extension while the real issue about auto update failure is ignored or discarded/deleted/closed without solving anything
I need help to share this to everyone until they fix this shitty perfomance
ps: i always need to redownload that fucking visual studio code everytime it has update5 -
Ditching Visual Studio and all its annoying lag for Visual Studio Code was one of the best "productivity hacks" I ever did5

My experience with Visual Studio Code hasn't been nice and I'm honestly kind of not liking it at this point in time :-(
Maybe it's just me who's being a dump-kop1 -
Hi devs hows it going?
is there a java or javascript game engine i can use on my pc?or how exactly can i start developing games on my pc.
items i have: visual studio code, eclipse (JDK for mc hack clients (pls dont come for me))
thats all i got lel
i seen the legend himself used java to create mini craft which was my childhood school game
he also used typescript to build his pixel game xd
let me know!14 -
I started writing basic in 1980 on my stepfather's Apple ][+. I was about ten. Then I got a Commodore 64 and got this awesome program called Gary's Game Kitchen. It had a Sprite editor and you programmed it by writing pseudo code. From there I learned C, then got jobs in Visual Basic and vb for Microsoft office (yuck!). Then I discovered Linux and became a web developer. *Hugs vim*

Flowcharting actual computing processes and using flowcharts to code. For someone who is more visual than logical like me, it helps as guide to code and it also serves as documentation to clients.
-
I have dreamed of this feature since the very first release of Visual Studio Code. But now, finally, that dream has become a reality.3

https://remotelyawesomejobs.com/job...
Looking at the "ideally you should" sections doesn't make me feel this is a junior position:
You are passionate about making data useful to the lay-person, there is no data you couldn’t derive visual meaning from. D3.js is your go to and Canvas is your friend.
You build components in your sleep, rock solid and performant using atomic design patterns.
You bend CSS processors to your will or throw them out and code by hand.1 -
Been a hot minute since I posted so let's get back into it!
Holy fuck developing on windows is so verbose and horrible!
I've been spoiled by using Meson on Linux and MacOS, going to visual studio to port my code is one of the most horrible experiences I have had with programming .-.
Why do people like visual studio so much, give me meson and vs code any day!!!4 -
Hard to say, as the best tool for one job might not be the best for another.
However between Visual Studio (for big solutions and full .NET development) and Visual Studio Code (for smaller projects, NodeJS and basic file editing) I've not had issues with any projects I've needed to work on. -
Does anyone know what technique does Visual Studio IDE uses to open window/dialog when you search for something?
Let's say I want to find github, and I get the exact location, and when I click the list item it opens the screen.
Does anyone has any WPF sample code of similar stuff? It's really cool, and I would like to implement it in my feature projects...3 -
I think maybe I am doing something wrong.
I have this node.js application I am building with typescript and I wrote tests in mocha. Now I need to make some changes which break quite a few tests.
When I run mocha on the command line the errors whizz past. When I worked in java and .net (with junit and nunit) you could just click a test in the ide to run it. So you could 'fix' one test at a time. Also you could just double click on a fail and it would jump you to the code for that test or the exception that failed.
I found this extension for visual studio code that adds a sidebar to visual studio code. It looked good but now I spent the last hour trying to get it to run typescript tests - looks like it doesn't support the compilers argument.
Surely other developers must do this sort of stuff. I am not using an obscure technology stack right? Do you write automated tests for your codebase? What tools do you use? Should I switch ide? switch testing frameworks? -
I'm using jetbrains IDE products from over an year now. I'm hooked. They're perfect.
But...
I'm looking for a replacement (don't ask why). Tried a few, netbeans seems to be closest to them (still very far).
Recently came across Visual Studio Code. Seems amazing, and very close to jetbrains.
Has anyone tried it? Any other recommendations?
I need IDE for: front-end (including React, sass, JS, etc.) And PHP
Don't recommend Sublime or Atom. Just don't. Or vim.
PS: should be free or close to free.3 -
My first experience was when I found old book about visual basic. Many years after that I was thinking that every language has a magic function to sort array. But normal coding expirience i've got when some day me and my friend decided to create a game. And after 2 years of development - ta da, I knew how to code.
-
Anbody noticed, now Microsoft is going to own two popular text editors. Visual Studio Code and Atom Editor.1
-
Any Vim users here?
Do you use Vim in VSCode and Jetbrains IDEs with ideavim?
If yes, Can you help me with some use cases? Thanks14 -
I came across an issue with Visual Studio 2017. I'm unable to collapse multiline comments, there is no - sign in front of it like with code blocks.
At home it is no issue and I can do this without problems.
Ive looked online and all I can find is people not being able to collapse comments in VS Code. And people who want to collapse everything but the comments, but the comments do get collapsed.
Is it a setting I cannot find?2 -
What features of visual studio are so great? I keep hearing about VS Code, and I'm finally going to try it for my next project. What features do I need to be amazed by and converted?10
-
I'm used to IDEs (e.g. jetbrains ones)
visual studio code for web development (recommended tool with open in containers that somebody else set up in my team)
anybody have tips on how they pimped out VSCode to be closer to an IDE?12 -
Not a rant, just wondering.
What's your favorite editor (not IDE) out there?
- Atom
- Sublime Text
- Visual Studio Code
- Notepad++
...
- nano
- Other (name it)
I'm trying Atom Editor, I've been a fan of Sublime Text for a couple of years. Tried VS Code, not a chance. Any suggestions?27 -
A couple of months ago I bought a two year licence for PHPStorm but shortly after I started this new job as React Web developper and everyone in my new team has been using Visual Studio Code with a specific set of plugins and settings which make I my premium IDE useless.
What an investment I did.7 -
I discovered you could edit the Visual Basic code in MS Access. I would read the code that was in there and figure out how i could extend it to do what i want. first code i ever wrote was a switch statement to control whether a set of buttons were enabled based on a dropdown value.
-
IDE: Visual Studio. Overkill of an IDE yet very very useful for everything.
Text Editor: Code and Atom. Although both of these text editors eat more resources than Sublime (especially Atom), what I love about both editors are the available packages and the monthly updates. -
What's your favorite editor for Web development? Using Coda on the Mac and good old UltraEdit when on Windows (with custom theme). Tried Sublime and MS Visual Studio Code but they never stuck.17

SSIS is a piece of shit. As well as Visual Studio.
SSIS job running on sql server bombs on vs_needsnewmetadata. I go to fix the issue by refreshing the db source and target tasks to re-read metadata from the db servers. While "refreshing" the metadata, IT policy requires reboot of computer, and triggers autoupdate of visual studio, and hoses my IDE. spend an hour re-installing VS and SSDT, bc the newest version of VS can't deploy to sql server thru the IDE. I'd rather code in Eclipse/Intellij ARGHHHHHHHH -
I just found out VSTS has dark mode option. Thank you, MSFT, for caring about all the dark souls out there.
Respect["Microsoft"]++
They have added dark mode in windows/ Azure/ edge/documentation pages/ Visual Studio/VS Code. _/\_3 -
The first code i ever wrote was a case statement in Visual Basic. I didnt really know what I was doing, just looking at the code that was already there and figuring out how to extend it to include more cases. I was about 17 at that point. I didnt properly start learning until I did Java in my first year of University.
-
you should be able to use a dropdown to select functions and member names like in visual studio in vs code while editing javascript :*(12

Had to fix some bugs in some really old ASP code today. Need Front Page Server Extensions which doesn't work after XP. Spin up a VM, install XP, IIS, FPSE, then we need Visual Studio 2003 because the project won't migrate. Turns out - installing 'Visual Studio 2003' is a prerequisite for installing 'Prerequisites for Visual Studio 2003'. Cheers Microsoft 😯

After using Visual Studio Code as default editor, I am finally aware that PHPStorm does everything the wrong way, or does it?5

Anybody know of a visual studio extension where you can link a file + line number to another file + line number, all inline in the code so that as the file changes the links still work, so that you can easily jump around the codebase. One example would be linking an html element to a less class so that you dont have to open the less file, then look for the class or ctrl+f or whatever.1

Just installed Visual Studio Code on my fresh machine and finally got the chance again to cherry pick extensions and themes :D
What Extensions and Themes have you installed and which do you frequently use?(doesn't matter for which programming language)2 -
Everytime i am forced to code with Visual studio I cant really remember why I hate it so much. But when I wait for the first autocompletion it comes back at me: Intellisense you useless piece of crap! I am faster coding in notepad looking up shit on the internet for 'autocompletion'....

Make an ASP .NET application for job interview take home assignment.
Try to use docker with it.
Runs fine through Visual studio (not code)
I declare is working and submit to organization but say it can run through docker-compose up.
I get reply that even the basic command doesn't work.
Turns out visual studio does some magic mapping or caching under the hood that I couldn't find in any config in the project and somehow gets it to work, but when running without Visual studio it doesn't have that magic context shit and thus running through terminal fails.
Obviously a lot is my fault for assuming what works through IDE would run through terminal without testing, but I will be angry with VS to make myself feel better >.>2 -
Quotes typed in Outlook are not the same as quotes typed in Visual Studio, or SSMS. Just so you don't spend hours trying to figure out WTF is wrong with you code, only to face palm.1

Hi,
looking for a bit of help.
Has anyone a recommended tutorial / introduction to .NET development, TFS and Visual Studio?
And - for later - a good reference for the datatypes / advanced topics / build system?
I'm starting to work on a Windows only DLL plugin and quite frankly - I'm lost.
TFS and Visual Studio is new to me and feels awkward...
And thx to experience I can understand most parts of code but the build system is unknown to me.
And a lot of the data types .NET has ...
Thanks in advance!4 -
So, I acquired Pluralsight code for 3 months subscription from Visual Studio Dev Essentials. It's time to close myself in basement and run Node & Angular paths 😂

Guys, I'm a big fan of Linux OS, and also a big fan of Visual Studio (+ Code).
If this is not against rules, could you (the whole Linux Comunity) help and wote up on this link
https://developercommunity.visualstudio.com/...
It a "request" that MS releases Linux version of Visual Studio (I know that there is MonoDevelop already) who is at least close to MS VS (maybee missing some functionalities, just like VS Mac)8 -
It sucks when you are unable to work on any new features in forever and mainly spend time updating the existing code base, doing visual designs & documenting the application.
Let me please work on a new feature that the clients will use instead of meaningless busy work2 -
I was merging using Visual Studio Code when I realised I wanted to merge neither the current nor the incoming code. I wanted it both gone. And that option does not exist!
Only accept one, the other, or both.
T'was a mildy interesting experience.4 -
Trying to update and add to my skills. Let's try angular,. Visual Studio sucks for this. Hey look vs code, this looks great.... Install, add some recommended extensions... Cool. Add eslint, hey look at these errors awesome I'm getting somewhere. WTF dont use var use let.. Ok why... Hours later and one drink, okay that makes sense. Change code.....
Unexpected declaration wtf why. Switch to var... Dont use var..... Fuck me... Google, read, google, read...... Wtf why why why won't this fucking work... I just want to code something using best practices2 -
First project I'm doing with C++.
I was using Eclipse (for C++ obviously) for some hours. It sucks.
Switched to VS Code. All the editor tool you can dream of are in. But there's no way to configure the project (includes, build system, toolchains…).
"What a fool" I say, remembering there's Visual Studio Community… which is only for Windows.
So I'm currently using BOTH Visual Studio Code and Eclipse.
Why can't there be ONE good, full featured and free C++ IDE for Linux ?38 -
Shoutout to the guy who made the Starfall vscode theme, I'm really loving it so far. This theme is fantastic, supports over 50 languages, and also super underrated, with only ~650 downloads. Definitely worth checking it out

Visual Studio hanging on "Finding Templates" popup on "new item" click, has got to be one of the worst KLPDs mid-prototyping. Stability's down the drain ever since they realised they can push shit code and fix it in updates every 2nd week.1

Do you think this product would be cool to use for macros in ex. PyCharm or Visual Studio Code? How useful do you think it would be? https://amazon.co.uk/Leslaur-Design...3

What are some features of an IDE, which I can not have when using a text editor? More precisely why should I use Visual Studio, instead of VS Code or Atom?5

Please unity devs...
If your going to use visual studio for code development, please change to visual studio code. Idk why but it slightly annoys me. If anyone can explain why visual studio would be better please do.3 -
It's one of those days when I'm debugging some code
and then I noticed a breakpoint I have deleted just popped up again by itself
my visual studio might be haunted -
My code editor has been frozen for 3 minutes because I entered a single character. My computer is a 16core 5.2ghz marvel of engineering. Visual Studio is a plague on humanity full-stop. Working with Unreal Engine gives me no choice but to use this piece of trash IDE that has only been going downhill since 2013. Cancel the project. Don't start over. Give up. Let Jetbrains make the IDEs.5

YOU ARE A FOOL, BY USING VISUAL STUDIO CODE!!!
Hating Microsoft is not about how bad is this or that feature because they failed in making it responsive, neither should it be blessed for its new outstanding opensource projects.
Microsoft is a marketing company, they don't have new ideas, breakthrough projects, inventions... no, they just copy the market and make/buy their own replicate of the trending services.
THAT IS SLOWING THE PROGRESS OF SCIENCE AND HUMAN IMPROVEMENT ITSELF.
Microsoft is just using the cold comfort of today instead of making a change but is also destroying the bright, enthusiastic, but poor brains of the modern society.
You are fool by using Visual Code, you are a manipulated sheep, a slut which innevitable follows the propaganda of the enemy of progress.
I an not going to stand here and support my enemy, I delete Visual Code.35 -
Anyone who uses Vim as code editor?
I recently learned Vim and the more I explore it, the more I love it.
Is it really helpful to go through the pain of learning those shortcut keys in the long run?1 -
I no longer have commercial licenses for Visual Studio at home.
I'm looking at getting VS Code. I can keep support for C#, and also do any HTML5 and PHP here. It looks promising because it is free, open source, and uses an environment I'm already familiar with. Projects I work on at home ate usually single developer projects.
Thoughts?1 -
I use vim and get bothered when people try and get me to use Code::Blocks, XCode or Visual Studio, ask me anything.

Visual studio! for C++, C#
Notepad++ for javascript
VS because of the many features and automation. Step trough code debugging and organization in one program.
notepad++ for its simplicity -
Not a rant, but what tools do you use for development?
As-in, what apps/services you've bought / installed for free?
For example, I use Visual Studio Code, iTerm2, Docker, DigitalOcean, CodePen etc.9 -
Compiling native code under Windows without using visual studio/msbuild is an unspeakable pain in the rear...3
-
Visual Studio can stop being a fucking asshole and stop tabbing my code around for me, you piece of shit.
I have an @if statement in a razor page in a <script> tag
Indented is a <text> tag so it'll accept javascript
Indented in that is my javascript . . . that it keeps trying to "fix"
Swear to christ this autoformat is more infuriating than helpful.1 -
I’ve realized that coding is really a stupid waste of time. Why you wouldn’t use a visual coding system or ai code assistant or any of the other code methods that are not coding is just dumb. Here’s to the end of coding and similar systems that makes this brain dead skill a thing of the past. I hope my comments didn’t anger any coders especially since I think coding is really stupid.6

Idea - possibly a bad one - visual studio extension that hits a database to display possible values to supply as a method argument. With caching of course..
I'm thinking along the lines of permissions in a database that at some point have to be hard coded against code to enforce them. Stuff like that.
Possible or beyond stupid?7
