Omfg this fucking guy!!!!
Context:
We are going through a major refactor of some of our backend components. I was tasked with cleaning up our ML code while another guy was tasked with cleaning up the general CRUD side of the backend, let's call him DA for "dumb ass".
** At 11pm
DA: I am getting a strange error from your backend. Look:
"Invalid call: method=PUT expected=[POST]"
Me: you need to send a post request not a put request
DM: no, it's not that. I am sending the right thing
Me: ... Let me see...
* 15min ish of testing *
No, it works fine on my version, 1.1.0 what's your version?
DM: I'm on 1.1.0.
Me: send me code?
DM: *send
"request.put(..."
Me: you are sending a PUT... It's literally in the screenshot. Send a Post
DM: I am
Me: no, send a Post
DM: I don't understand, I am sending the request
Me: it's a post not a put
DM: but...
Me: it's a post not a put
Me: good night!!!!!!12 -
Job offer: "All employees will be provided Macbooks"
Nope! Just nope.
Let your dev chose their equipment, thank you very much.
If they want a Linux laptop, buy them one. If they want a Windows workstation, give it to them. And if and only if they want a Macbook, give them a Macbook.
I used to work in two companies having the requirement to use a Macbook for two years.
I know its pros. I know its cons. My conclusion for me: Never again!13 -

My biggest tip to new developers? Embrace your ignorance, don't be embarrassed by it. Let it inspire you to learn as much as you can, let it humble you into asking questions when you're stuck, let it prepare you to change within an industry that is anything but static. Admitting you don't know something isn't a weakness, it's an opportunity 😃6

Programming has taught me that time is a valuable and under appreciated resource.
if a task is repeated multiple times per week / month, you have at your finger tips the ability to automate the hell out of it and let your computer deal with the task instead.rant don't waste time dealing with mundane shit automate it wk202 repeated manual tasks let the computer do what it does best1 -
Should I ever design a programming language, I'll aim for the golden middle course and let arrays start at 0.5.7

Then.
Dev: "Ah! Some free time at last, let me stack overflow something and learn"
Now.
Dev: "I'll work later, let me devRant"1 -
So I just got let go because there was not enough work to keep me full time. Yet my manager was farming out dev work to a 3rd party developer... Fml3

Pressing that “deploy to production” button when it usually consists of multiple projects and databases updating at once.
Maybe I should look at separating them one year. -
Raise your hands if you absolutely need a screen to work!
Most of you? Ok.
Well, let me share a story of a dev who doesn't really need a screen at all.

While working on generic enterprise code: querying databases, calling third-party APIs and just passing data around, I'm thinking: "PLEASE LET ME DO SOME THINKING, LET ME WORK ON SOME HARD ALGORITHM OR SOMETHING!"
When finally working on 'some hard algorithm or something', I'm thinking: "ARGH! MY HEAD ACHES! GIVE ME RELEASE! LET ME WORK ON SOME MINDLESS ENTERPRISE CODE!"1 -
You : Let me just add up those two numbers together...

A free advice: Dont let people recognize you on devrant. Its too good to not let your coworkers/mentors know about it and you should realise you must have ranted about them already.9

This is just a bunch of things I needed to get out that I’ve been holding in for a while now.
Recently I’ve found myself In this state where I feel so depressed, lazy, and just pressured to program in general. I feel like it comes from me dismissing my abilities a lot of the time and I get demotivated to do stuff but at the same time when I do sit down and code I get distracted so easily, I can get work done but I just feel like I’m everywhere.
I want to apply for positions but I’m in this duality where I both feel like I can or can’t do it, I feel like wherever I apply to will not be accepting to people that don’t have a big degree or a ton of work experience and that I’ll get fucked on it. I’m fucking anxious that if I do get a job they will be like “hey fucking do X” and I will have no fucking clue how to even do X, and I’ve had people tell me that they know for a fact I can do it but I still fucking can’t believe it because I just completely doubt myself because I have failed at things like learning certain frameworks or failing to make the things I want and having to turn to simpler projects first because I’m too overwhelmed by the scale and I didn’t do any thinking about it before hand.
I don’t know if I’m making sense at all, I always write out rants like this and I always just erase them because I fucking hate whining like this but I need to let it out before I go more crazy I’ve been holding so much in for a long time now and it’s not been good.
I just over all feel terrible, anxious, and unproductive and I want it to stop.5 -
I walked into work this morning and before I even pulled my laptop out of my bag a PM asked if I could make a "quick change" for a client 😑4

make let not var

I hate office parties. It's not because I have the social skills of a rock. Language issues (and not the ones computers use) cripple you socially. Especially if you have social awkwardness to start with.
I'm just hiding in the toilet right now, waiting for the clock to strike 6 so that I can make some excuse of an appointment and leave. xD8 -
If I was independently rich I'd pay to work on software I use to fix bugs that it has.
Hello, Paradox Interactive, let me fix some of these roads for you.
Hello, Spotify, let me allow power users to make playlists be subsets of other playlists.
Hello, Github, let me create a tagging system to sort starred repositories.2 -

Just followed the JavaScript MDN dev docs example to do this:
// Deep Clone
let obj1 = { a:1, b: { c:2 }};
let obj2 = JSON.parse(JSON.strigify(obj1))
Why does it feel wrong to write this code?10 -
That big lie we tell others.. "Let me just finish something here..." (4 bugs solved, 10 new ones and 2h later) "shit!!! I'll be right there!!! Let me just...."1

ZAYN : Baby, let me be your man.
BABY : No let, only const.

Disclaimer : it's a JavaScript joke.

Recently I tried implementing a 2d grid you could drag (for performance I decided it would auto genetate new grid tiles)
Gotta say, I have a lot more respect for people who try to build this without a framework, I am building it using JavaScript and pixi.js
But man, drawing graphics is hard 😅
It's worth it though, performance is mad 💪3 -
A symptom of Subway Screen Symptom in details.
It is called so because it happens when you have to take your laptop everywhere by subway.12 -
Got let go / fired today. I was still on my probation period, but they are going to pay me out for the next 2 weeks.
My boss wasn't even in the call "because he's in a sales meeting".
You know you are being let go when you don't have access to any company passwords, and they don't assign you any new work.
Well, onto something new. But first going to relax and catch up on my sleep.2 -
-My phone is root enabled (built in one)
-Super Mario Run is out so I download it.
-It doesnt like root
-I inadvertently installed full root which can hide itself (lucky no bricking)
AND IT WORKED until now...14 -
Sorry I posted late for wk68.
When my colleague taught me how to use excel sorting. I tend to not know also so he can be use of help instead of slacking.
He's always saying, "Oh my gosh! I can't really imagine and feel awesome when teaching you devs how to sort things in excel." -
First year of college. We had to write a program in assembly to let lights go on and off slowly but I couldn't get it to work and googled the shit out of it trying to get it to work to no avail. So I go to the teacher as I expected him to have a bit more documentation/knowledge on how the shit worked. He literally said oh let me google that for you. Which made me go 🤦♂️. In the end I never figured out how to get the lights on or off but luckily my team mates did a good enough job to get us passed in the class.4
-
Hey devRanters, how do you charge your phone?
1) Let ist almost drop to about 1-5%, and then let it charge fully up over night, and keep it plugged in till morning.
2) Just let it drop about 10-20% and charge it immediately up, and unplug it, when it reaches full charge15 -
I just became the CS tutor for my university...the one thing I have learned:
Don't let them ask questions explain what they need to know and walk away. Let them down and find the joy of problem solving.1 -
Had a manager that, during performance reviews, would say things like:
"You need to work harder on managing our clients' warm fuzzies."
"I can't give you a hard number to strive for on this metric here because you'll just do the minimum"
Needless to say, the turnover in that group was insanely high. -
"Don’t let your design resist your readers. Don’t let it stand in the way of what they want to do: read." - Steve Krug1

No matter what you do the universe just tries to beat and let you down, you just have to let go and trust your wit!1

Hey guys,
Based on some recent posts about automating repetitive tasks, I was wondering, what are some tasks that you have automated?
In my case, I guess it's not really automating, but I made my work simpler by creating a bunch of bash alias that take care of frequently occurring bugs or small tasks like fetching all git repos in a directory.10 -
!rant - well maybe
I really wonder what is going to be the end product concerning Deno and TypeScript when it deals to managing dependencines. Thus far the general idea is to have a deps.ts file for which the dependencies required are fetched through a url, cached into the project and then imported from that file onwards.
This seems interesting to me, and I would venture to say that it eliminates some of the pain points from running Node applications, we all know about the dread caused by overly large node_modules folders, but would y'all say this is the right approach? rather than stopping people from generating a large pool of dependencies, it seems that the issue would continue to persist, but it would just come from the internet during runtime rather than from living in the file system of the application.
Either way, I still remain a big fan of Ryan Dahl and his creations and can't wait to see Deno stable enough to test out on a couple of projects.2 -
Fuckers didn't even give my account access to the fucking soap action I was calling after 3 weeks of email chains and other back and forth.
First the credentials I was given "we're fully set up" and now this BS??
Fucking test your live and sandbox environments work BEFORE you let your clients start their integrations.
And if they have issues, try to emulate the e-2-e test and prove you can complete the transaction yourself BEFORE emailing back 🤦1 -
Was recruited to build a text-based course where I get a nice bonus if I finish the course early. Now I know how they are always able to save themselves from giving that out. There's so much fucking red tape for each literal sentence I write! I have MULTIPLE reviewers, commenting, editing, and "suggesting" EVERYTHING I write.
News flash: this course is derived from a different video-based course that has sold hundreds of copies on other platforms, so I must be doing something right.
Just let me write the whole course and we edit it in the end!!! This treadmill is going to triple or quadruple the time until publishing...
I feel like I'm trapped in the movie office space: "every day I have 5 different bosses come and tell me the same thing"
Won't be working with this platform again. -

let newStr = str[...anotherIndex]

So I've been on vacation for a week now, still two days to go until I get back to work.
It's been super fun, but I am getting pretty stressed about the shit-ton of work I have to do when I come back.
How do you let go?2 -
can option pls override or operator
this is stupid
say no to
let branch = branch.unwrap_or(config.branch.unwrap_or("something".to_string()));
say yes to
let branch = branch || config.branch || "something".to_string();6 -

Quick javascript question:
let a = .............
Make a == a always return false.
What would a be? One solution is to let a = NaN. Anything fancier? :>4 -
Lol. In the years that `const` and `let` have been in Javascript, not once have they ever helped me read the code better or caught a bug. They have not helped me understand anyone else's code, nor have they really helped convey any sort of meaning for other developers that I have heard.
Usually the rule is, const first, then change it to let if you need to. It adds nothing.
All this gold plating is weighing things down.15 -

Really weird number.
Most probably its marketing call from the telecom operator that revolutionized the tele industry in my country by providing free 4G services asking to subscribe to their service.

I'll have to let you go..
Thanks for the last 8 months of free services.3 -

I have learnt html,css, and some basic javascript for web development,and made a few projects including a calculator with prompts.This is the code :
<script type="text/javascript">
function prote(){
let firstNum=prompt("Enter first number")
let secondNum=prompt("Enter second number")
let num1=parseInt(firstNum);
let num2=parseInt(secondNum);
let result=num1 + num2;
alert(result);
}
function prote2(){
let firstNum=prompt("Enter first number")
let secondNum=prompt("Enter second number")
let num1=parseInt(firstNum);
let num2=parseInt(secondNum);
let result=num1 - num2;
alert(result);
}
function prote3(){
let firstNum=prompt("Enter first number")
let secondNum=prompt("Enter second number")
let num1=parseInt(firstNum);
let num2=parseInt(secondNum);
let result=num1* num2;
alert(result);
}
function prote4(){
let firstNum=prompt("Enter first number")
let secondNum=prompt("Enter second number")
let num1=parseInt(firstNum);
let num2=parseInt(secondNum);
let result=num1/num2;
alert(result);

However I want to do game dev and I feel it may have been a mistake to start learning web development,I originally started learning code in roblox studio,however some do not consider making games in roblox studio "REAL" game development and I didn't exactly feel it was either.I messed around with unity and found the layout quite similar to roblox studio. However
I heard phaser uses javascript and Unity uses C#.In which case using phaser would not require using a new language.However I am aware that If I want to make 3d games(Which I do) I will have to move to unity eventually.Basically, as a beginner should I switch to unity and C# first or Phaser and javascript first.6 -
