Act I
Me (Lead Developer), Boss (Head of IT), CEO
> enter stage left CEO
CEO > "Alright Boss, give it to me straight. Are we going to be able to release app x by this date?"
Boss > "Yup we'll have a beta release on that date"
> exit stage right CEO
Me > types long email to Boss outlining exactly why we won't be able to release app x anywhere near that date, beta or otherwise, because:
1. We have a development team of 2
2. I've never developed an iOS app before
3. Developer 2 is still trying to understand git, because
3a. Developer 2 isn't even a developer (but he's doing iOS front-end so w/e)
4. We don't have the required database systems in place
5. Or CRM
6. Or CPQ
7. We'll need to conduct a security audit
Boss > "yeah, but CEO is gonna need to hear that date a few more times before he can fully understand"
Me > *internally screaming BUT YOU HAVEN'T TOLD HIM THAT AT ALL*
"ok cool just glad we're on the same page on that one"5 -
Watching a cookery program and it made me think it must be hard being a chef.
Then it made me think that being a web developer is a bit like cooking.
You have your ready meal equivalent with WordPress and Wix.
You have your cook at home kits with front-end frameworks like bootstrap and foundation.
You have your recipes and ingredients with package managers like npm and JavaScript modules.
Then you have your own home made cooking using vanilla js, CSS and HTML made to your own liking.
Just like being a good chef, being a good web developer is about knowing what ingredients and methods to include, but also what to leave out, to get the best result!5 -
Probably the most heart breaking thing to hear as a Developer - " Nobody cares about your backend, front-end is the priority !" :/11

Backend internship interview
They: Can you reverse the given string without using pointers? (C++)
Me: Yeah, sure
*Then I start explaining how I am gonna approach the problem and such*
They: Ok, we understand that you can do it, now can you write a front-end that has a couple of routes. Also, these routes should have some sort of list views because we want you to print information **attention** that you are going to parse from Amazon inside those list views.
Me: *dumbfounded and trying to explain that am not a front-end developer*
They: But we still want you to do this.3 -
Recruiter: Do you use .net C#?
Me: Uh. No. I applied for a position of a front-end developer. I use JavaScript and...
Recruiter: Oh, that's good. We need an Android developer.
*sigh*7 -
Well.. I'm a front end developer and this quote is my favourite.
"A user interface is like a joke. If you have to explain it, it's not that good. "4 -
Recruiter: We found you resume as a perfect match for this job, my client needs a Junior frontend developer ...., that sounds good to you?
Me: Yes, I’d like to apply but you have to be aware that I’m a Junior.
R: of course, don’t worry about it, please send your resume (ah? I thought you already have it) so we can go on with the process.
Me: ok.
... 5 fucking weeks of interviews later...
R: Hi, unfortunately we cannot proceed with you application, my client is looking more for a Senior FullStack Lord of the 7 kingdoms Master degree developer, sorry.
Me: u kidding me right?3 -
Me Looking for jobs in IT:
<Random java joke>
"Were looking for a Java front end developer"
<Javascript logo>
🤔🤔🤔1 -
Front End programming is the worst of all worlds.
I am a Full Stack developer that during every interview says "i can do front end stuff if needed". Something gets lost in translation and becomes "I do only front end stuff".
I don't mind front end development, but i hate urgent nitpicking that happens every time. Everyone else on the team works by regular tasks and deliveries (sprints and release dates), but my work consists of being the brush of the creative mind of someone else, that could not figure out how to make a good design before sending it out to me.
I am not a designer, a designer job is a creative one, i am just a brush that the team uses to complain why this button looks wrong on this not designed platform.9 -
2017 Front End development anyone?
Wouldn't be surpised if in 2018, Javascript frameworks would reach 100+ in count. 😋

When you start a new job as a Senior Developer, and start asking questions about the code, and you have these collections of conversations with other front-end people:
Exhibit 1:
Me: Ahh so I see the filtering and pagination is all done with Javascript in the front end...
Random dev: No, it's done with Angular.
Exhibit 2:
Me: I think we should add frontend pagination to this page. There will be too many elements on it if you're a customer with 2000 servers.
Random dev: Don't bother, there's no pagination in the API call... So that will not gain any performance.
Me: But it wouldn't take long to implement and it would improve the user experience, why would you want to show ALL the elements, when you have an option not to... Also, it WILL be a major performance hit, especially on mobile.
Random dev: People will use search anyway.
😥🔪
Also, there are no coding standards, every file looks different, and my opinion is being disregarded in everything, and I thought my last job was bad...
Seriously how are some people hired as front-enders?
Since I just took this job, I feel obligated to stay a couple of months... But hey, don't cry for me, I might have more rants for you. 😂
Sorry for the long rant, here's cake: 🍰5 -
Got a LinkedIn message from a recruiter looking to know if I’m interested in a full stack developer role, to only work on front end. The requirement is that I know one of:
“go, node.js, rails, python, C# .NET, RoR etc”.
I wonder who it is that doesn’t have a clue, company or recruiter (or both?).
I’m actually going to reply to this one for fun to try figure out this mess (yes I’m that bored)19 -
Had a recruiter contact me at home on my day off.
Recruiter: We have a company that would be interested in hiring a C# developer because of your programming skillset.
Me: Does it involve ASP.NET?
Recruiter: Yes.
Me: I apologize, but I don't have any skills in ASP.NET. I've been instead focusing on building my skillset with Java Spring/Hibernate and soon JavaScript to start building front end skills with my backend skillset.
Recruiter: Oh, is Java an in demand skill that companies want?
....Why are you talking to me mate? Take off your headset, go home, and rethink your life choices.4 -
Finally, my boss accepted that I was not a professionnal front-end developer but an internship. FINALLY7

!Rant
I have the absolute greatest and nicest front-end developer in the world.
Today I was being given all kinds of praise for putting something on a site that the client loved and it seems to be getting the conversions they want. I felt really bad taking the praise because I didn't design it. The front-end developer designed it for me and gave me a picture of what she thought the client wanted and I built it. So I passed on all the compliments to her and told her that everyone was super happy with it.
She accepted the thanks but then floored me telling me that she didn't feel like she did anything and that my job was more important. We started arguing about who was more important.
"I accept that your designs do nothing without my back-end code, but without your designs no one would ever use anything I made."
She responded by sending me a list of sites with terrible designs that people use daily. And continued to tell me how much more important back-end is than front end.
If she wasn't 1500 miles away I might have kissed her. I needed to hear that today.2 -
Explaining my mom about my job as backend developer... She couldn't understand what is there behind the website. She was like "u designed the website. It's done. What u do full day?"
Finally I gave an example of restaurant... I am the cook(backend developer). Front-end is waiter. Finally she understood....6 -
Question for the senior front end web developer here:
If you guys got a project (big or small), do you guys usually:
1. Get a template from another website and modify or style it to suits your need, or
2. Build it from scratch?
This applies to website like devrant, or swag store32 -
How I discovered I was a developer:
The company had hired a pair of computer science graduates and we had been commissioned to build a magento store. Weeks went buy with limited progress, and missing functionality was met with protestations from the devs about unreasonable demands.
At this time I had been taken on as a designer / casual front end developer (though the focus was on design). I knew HTML, CSS and some very limited php and js.
We were severely over deadline, and seeing the desperation on people's faces I suggested looking into it.
I read the magento docs, got an install up an running, configured an installed plugins, integrated the theme using the complex multilevelled XML/phtml architecture magento uses and even got some of the more complex js functionality working using JavaScript.
In two weeks.
I'm now the lead developer4 -
I am a back end developer who is forced to fix angularjs problems because we don't have people. Literally copy/paste and wild guessing. Am I a full stack developer now?!?!

No, I am a back end developer who can hack front end together if somebody else started it.😉😉4 -
Hating WordPress is cool these days, but:
1) Shitloads of themes for clients to choose from (I'm not good with designing and where I live you are more likely to meet a unicorn than a front-end developer that can code).
2) Non technical people can understand it's admin interface without lots of explaining.
3) Huge community makes it extremely easy to find answers even when looking for pretty specific stuff.
For me it's a valid option when making something simple.18 -
I'm leaving my job.
That had already been decided when I learned that the only other front end guy at the company put in his two weeks notice. I immediately decided that I was morally obligated to put in my 4 months notice to give the company enough time to find a replacement (because, contrary to the beliefs of some programmers, front end plays a critical role in web dev).
With only 2 weeks left, I was put on his project to do some "simple design work".
Jesus christ in heaven alive and dead...
I've never in my career seen CSS with such an intense level of specificity -- nobody on that team should have ever let that code get so out of control.
I've spent the past week cursing, walking out of the room, whispering "I can't believe you've done this", ranting to non-developer friends.
Here's an example: the application has a panel used all over the place with a header and a body. Every Single View has it's own duplicated panel, each with its own unique class names and CSS. And that's just one element.
Every view has hundreds of lines of duplicated CSS. Every button, link, list, all with unique styles.
To any junior developer reading this, please hear me: Write one block of CSS for any element that will be reused. DO NOT duplicate your code when it can be used over and over.

Today someone was testing a website for me.
Tester: I've found a bug this button doesn't work
Me: It works. I tested it in Firefox and Chrome.
Tester: I'm using Edge
Me: Oh yeah. Forgot that was even still a thing...7 -
Generally I don't discuss work with family as they just smile and nod.
I start by saying I'm a front end web developer, then simplify to I code websites, then I have to simplify again to say I make the bit you look at.
So now I just say I'm in IT.1 -

A few years back I worked at a company as their front-end web developer with one other guy who was their "back-end" developer. PHP and MySQL specifically. He was eventually fired and I took over both development roles. When I got around to seeing his source code and the way he had created the databases, I immediately saw why he was fired. This guy did not understand the concept of loops. Instead of separating out tags and categories with a split / loop, he set up database tables for EVERY. SINGLE. TAG.
i.e. tag_1, tag_2, tag_3, etc. And then to top ot off, instead of looping through the tables, he set up huge conditioks for EVER.LY. SINGLE. TAG.
i.e. if(tag_1) else(tag_2) else(tag_3) etc.
That fucking guy...6 -

Got hired as a junior front end developer.
1 year later I am main java developer for two big projects.
Fuckery galore ladies and gents!1 -
Job posts that look for experience in everything! Experience in large scale enterprise kubernetes bullshit! What the fuck is kubernetes, a Greek god?? 4 plus years experience in aws! 5 years experience in cloud infrastructure scaling! 5 years experience in working with stakeholders and collaborating UX design! 5 years experience in React Native! 5 years experience in noSQL! 5 years experience in firebase! 5 years experience in graphics design! 5 years experience in node CSS! And every javascript known to mankind! I would love to meet this legendary developer that every company seems to want! Sick of these ads that ask for god level experience in every development role or tech. It’s like they’re hiring one developer to write their entire system from scratch which would obviously require godly expertise in front back and every fucking end there is to fucking build10

Browsing job postings, and some of these requirements are just crazy, and/or wtf. Here's an example:
Front End developer wanted, junior to mid-level. An ideal candidate will be an expert in PHP, C#, and Java. Minimum experience of 10 years. Estimated compensation 30,000 per year.
Entry level full stack developer. Must be an expert in SQL. 5 years experience, BS in computer science required.
Web Developer intern - must have 3 years of experience. Must be an expert in x, y, z. This position is unpaid.

This really pisses me off. As a front end developer (ember.js, HTML and Css) colleagues and boss and pm are always making jokes how I just need to change a button or a color and whenever there is a bug in the UI there's always big fun and jokes around it. But when there's a bug in the API, they never joke around, it's just : oh yeah we're getting the wrong data or an exception. But they always like to undervalue UI work even when it involves complex layouts, multi browser compatibility, responsive design, mobile browsers etc.. While they just code their API to connect to a database and everything works they don't really need to worry about what the user is using as a browser. They just get requests and send replies. I don't really think people value the work in front end as much as backend and that pisses me off as I believe there's a lot more going on in the front end.. I know they mean well and they are all cool people but sometimes it pisses me off as they don't value my work..13

Quited my job because I want to code and not project managing (instead of coding). Found a new job as front-end developer with opportunity to become a full stack dev.

Me doing front-end work and get a stupid feature request from a customer...."I'll have to talk to our back-end developer and DBA to see if those changes are possible".
Guess what...Im the back-end developer and DBA and the answer is "hell no".2 -
Me: Hi! I'd like to apply for the front-end developer position!
Them: Mmhmm. What's your education? It involves a lot of javascript.
Me: I recently earned a certificate in javascript development for front-end, on top of my professional experience.
Them: What's you're experience?
Me: 8 years of professional front-end development.
Them: Hmm. That won't work. What about this job, Implementation Specialist?
Me: So I have to help the customer write requirements, train the customer with new software, write documentation for the customer... you want me to apply to be in customer support?
Would I have spent the last 8 years of my life learning and earning programming if I liked dealing with people?3 -
My boss : you're not qualified enough as web developer...
Me : Need me to learn a new language ?
My boss : you should learn "illustrator"!
Me : you know I'm a front end developer right ?
My boss : yes, Illustrator, ever heard of it?

Oracle really need to hire a new front-end web developer. Their site is not very beautiful, especially their JavaFX documentation sites.7

Soo many java script hate posts! Not one post goes by where i thank god that I'm not a front end developer!
PS - I let my intern work on the the UI of my application :P He is on devrant. I hope he sees this! Hehe.3 -
Why is it that everytime, as a back-end developer, I want to dive into a simple front-end topic or technique which can perfectly be done in plain JavaScript, I need 27 different libraries and packages according to nearly all tutorials..
It really crushes my motivation and is just ridiculous.6 -
They probably should have made me sign a NDA, but I never did.
I was a wee little front-end devloper for a really small dev shop. The lead devloper, who was also the only back-end developer decided to quit. The company was in the middle of a huge project with Rolls-Royce aerospace. I managed to learn ColdFusion and release the application in only a few months. It was basically a giant warranty management application for jet engines. This is one app I wish I can go back and redo because if I had the expierence then that I do now... I feel like it would be so much better. That application allowed me to advance in my career, and 5 years later, I'm working for one of the largest development companies. -
Saw this job post a while back:
Junior front-end developer

My friend a backend dev who manages a little UI by using bootstrap themes. One Saturday he calls me up says "Dude, I need your help, we had a demo and the CEO decides to demo the project to prospective people on Internet Explorer. It looked alright on Chrome but the whole UI has gone haywire on IE. Need your help asap. Join me on screen share". I checkout his HTML code and find a file where the link tag is inside the body tag. I ask him to move that into head tag as in wherever the master template is, I tell him to change the doctype, add responsive meta tags, and even after all these, it just doesn't render bootstraps media queries. After beating my head for around 15mins, I see a drop-down caret in IE's inspector with 7 besides it, someone had set the compatibility mode to IE7. Why in the world would someone set an IE11 to IE7.
My friend heaved a sigh of relief and walked to his boss to show that he isn't a bad developer, his boss is just a bad user.3 -
We as a 15ppl company are contractors for various big agencies, but we're most of the time under NDA. So I guess I'm a "Ghost-Front End Developer".

when you live in a 3rd world country you don't get to be a "front-end" developer nor a "backend" one, nor "devops". You're either all of them, or a php+jquery hacker that produces shitcode on a daily basis1

Create graphics and web pages that jam! This it! All one needs to be a successful front end developer. :D4 -
I was not having much respect for out front-end developer, as the UI is not so good., yea. I know it UI depends on the designer.
Now the new design changed and our UI looks awesome.,
and I must say that my respect increased a lot when my pm asked him to fix the layout in UC Browser.
Fucking shit., in UC it is showing two lanes as one lane. I don't know why., he was working hard to fix that.
Massive Respect to him. I really happy by being backend dev.8 -
Finally got a call for an interview and they asked if I had any experience with front-end frameworks. I said yeah and they said that that's great since their client needs a UI/UX guy and said they'd get back to me in 2 days.
I got a call from the said client half an hour later who goes, "Hello! I am PersonX from CompanyA and we've got your resume and would like to hire you as a Laravel developer!"
Buddy... it says right there on the top that I'm a front-end developer and you were even checking out my LinkedIn... fuckin' fucktard.3 -
I am good as Front End developer, using JavaScript I can do the job, the whole job. Developing, Styling, designing and deploying the web applications is my daily job for few years now...
Today I quit my job for a new position as Back End developer using a new programming language I totally know nothing about it!!!
I am not sure about my decision... but I would like to take the risk....2 -
Went from a web developer (mostly front end, moderate back end experience) to now being a firmware developer for a backup product. *head explodes*3

Does any other front-end developer have the fear that we'll run out of handy words or phrases for JS frameworks and have to import massively long sentences to use what we need?6

Just saw a role advertised for a front end developer. Skills required amongst other things·
· Integrating with middle-tier microservices such as NodeJS
· .NET Core (2.1+), C# 7.0+ and JAVA
· SQL Server, T-SQL, MySQL
· Azure Dev-ops
There are other standard and expected front end requirements but want someone with 4+ years experience
Salary £19,000 - less than two thirds of the national average salary for non UK folks.
Applications: 0
Hmm I wonder why6 -
It really irks me when I see 'web developers' and 'front-end developers' write CSS like a bunch of first-timers. Not considering hierarchy, specificity or even following a proper naming convention (who the fuck mixes camel case AND lowercase for class names?!) It's worse when you already have Sass or SCSS and they still write their style rules WITHOUT PROPER NESTING or keep using !important like it was a goddamn semicolon.
This is fucking basic shit for a web or front-end developer, and God help you if I ever conduct your technical interview and decide to ask you on a whim to write an Angular app WITHOUT USING BULLSHIT SYSTEMS LIKE CLARITY, ANGULAR MATERIAL OR BOOTSTRAP for your UI. But if you can explain to me the pros and cons between using CSS grid and flex, I'll be fucking impressed.
I wish these 'UI experts' I keep encountering would learn to build an optimal static site without a fucking framework or build manager before doing advanced shit, for the love of Jeebus.14 -
A back-end developer at my company thinks CSS is easy, tries to fix some styling by himself without consulting front-end developers and messes up the styling of multiple web apps that rely on those styles. The next Jira ticket related to fixing those styles is, of course, assigned to me (with the highest priority)...

Hello devRanters. I'm new to this community but I've already started feeling comfortable here. You guys are great!
I don't understand why there are more rants about front end developers. I hardly see any rant by a system developer or a security analyst.10 -
I'm a front end developer who knows Ruby on rails and Node Js, I still call myself a freaking FRONT END DEVELOPER because I don't have enough knowledge of the required concepts to trust my skill in a complex backend project.
How the fuck there are so many full stack developers who lack shit tons of knowledge in both specialties! And worst of those are asp.net "FULLSTACK DEVS" that can't write JavaScript without copying and pasting from SO and don't know that display flex is a thing!14 -

This was a comment I made on another ranter's post.
* Tailor your resume (and cover letter if needed) according to the job. No generic resume.
* Research about the company and make sure you have the same interests as the company. Clearly let them know why they should hire you. One question you can expect is: Why should we hire you?
* Show them that you're passionate about the job.
* Be curious. Ask questions. That's how they'll know you're interested.
* Be open to opportunities. Let's say you're applying for Full Stack developer role. Be open to take up Front End or Back End developer role. You don't have to accept everything but at least roles tangent to your job (provided they match your interest).
* Be flexible but focused.
* You don't have to know every listed requirement but make sure to know the majority.
* Don't lie. "Fake it till you make it" doesn't work with dev roles.
* Be confident in telling them "you don't know" if you don't know. Also make sure to tell you're willing to learn that.4 -

Another unrealistic deadline from our non-software developer PM.
He agreed to client upon delivery of a complete system consisting of 4 micro-services in Node and 4 front-end Angular application integrated with each micro-service accordingly.

After exhaustive talking to my boss, who always expresses the same concerns, we always end up agreeing that we need to separate development across our coworkers competences ...
We are even gonna hire a full front-end developer this time (as we did with the last 3 hires)..
And what did he do you may ask...
Put our front ender in charge of:
- Build a api in python
- Build the front-end
- 2 months deadline
The front ender is smart and is constantly asking me stuff and learning a lot.
But wtf boss? I could do it in no time...
I literally spent this whole week doing nothing, waiting for some approvals...
He is making everyone unmotivated as fuck ...
I'm starting to wonder pretty fucking every time if he is genuinely retarded.6 -
Is it just me, or is the term full stack developer a bit carelessly thrown about in job listings and such?
In the past, as far as I can tell, you could refer to yourself as a full stack dev if you had experience with both front end and back end technologies.
If you for example knew HTML/CSS, JS, PHP and MySQL, you'd be a full stack dev.
Now however, I feel you need to know so much more to justify calling yourself an actual full stack dev, and yet most job listings ask for a full stack dev.
What do you guys think?
Should the term full stack developer still be used, and what do you need to know to justify calling yourself a full stack dev without feeling like a liar?8 -
Just signed my work papers, managed to get a front-end developer position after looking for a while! Moved to a much bigger city too6
-
Boss yelled at lead mobile dev for low productivity because the project manager present him wrong timetables and added accidentally one more week of work.
Next day boss yelled at the lead mobile dev cause the back end wasnt working well.
Project manager and lead back end developer enjoy life! Front is hell :P5 -
I was on a verge of losing my job and then I used GSAP framework and saved my job.
Struggles of being the only front end developer in a company is painful.2 -
The height of procrastination:
One of the front end developer told me to change few things in two services I told him it’ll take one or two hours (although I did it in 15 mins). I just called him to say I’ll give this tomorrow morning its a long task. While the reality is I am too lazy to build the war and deploy.🙈2 -
For you front end developer out there:
How do you recommend a back end guy learn how to make something presentable? I can write HTML and CSS, but I can't seem to make anything that looks nice8 -
I got an email about the job opening of a "HTML Developer" in a leading telecom company in our country.
A HTML Developer? Really ? Are you expecting a html only website in this day an age? How can you be a "leading company" when you did not even know the correct term for a front end web development job post3 -
Last year my boss made me develop a way to "creatively" feature ads on our online magazine.
It was a piano keyboard. Yes, I created a pure HTML and CSS piano. Every key had a small title, when HOVERED emitted a sound (tuned on D btw ) and when clicked opened a pop up with the ad content. We tried a black and white piano and also a rainbow-like coloured one.
I strongly advised against everything. We're small and I have a good relationship that soured because he thought I was just being lazy.
Guess what happened? Advertisers saw the live piano and ran away. Hours and hours of development thrown away.
Please. Trust your front-end developer.3 -
When the manager decides you're the one who should build a website and you're not the front-end developer at the company 🤬🖕17

What To Learn?
I'm a beginner in web development and have knowledge about html, css, JavaScript, jQuery, Sass, NodeJS, Express, MongoDB, Passport. You can consider me to be a beginner full stack developer, but I'm confused about what to learn further. There are so many front end frameworks that one can spend his entire life learning them. React, Vue, Angular, Backbone, etc. But I always want to learn backend properly, then there's Rails, PHP, SQL, Python. Can anyone atleast tell me what to learn and why exactly? This thing's making me mad and anxious.24 -
Hi, what is the average salary of developers in your country.
For me : i'm junior UI/UX designer and front end developer in Paris, working for Parisian digital consulting agency 35hrs a week
Annual salary 30k €
Adding to this :
Daily meal ticket 8,8€
Insurance
50% of transport ticket's price is refunded
And many other stuffs and don't even remember.
Knowing that Paris is an expensive city.
How about you people ?22 -
4 years ago I made a personal goal/plan to be a full stack developer. Meaning a good understanding of any development between os level code and web/front end user experience.
Over the years this term 'full stack' has been abused greatly and now basically means 'a javascript developer that generally knows what they are talking about'.
So now, devRant collective I ask you. What do you call a developer with good skills in:
- os level code (c, c++ and os apis)
- database level tech (advanced querying and db aglo/modeling)
- software architecture
- application level (workflow and business logic)
- transport level (protocol design and usage)
- front end tech (graphics programming and event driven paradigm)
- user experience14 -
Frontend-Developer steps into my office and tells me that my code does not work and that he has checked everything.
>me confused, cause I did it every time so<
So I spent one hour to check and recompile my code again and again. I created more console outputs than my whole last week... And at the end... It was not my fault, I had to find out that the front- and backcolor of his label are the same so the text was not visible.
Dear frontend developer,
I love your designs and most of the time you make a really good job, but please check something like this before you confuse a backend developer for one hour and let him doubt about himself...
Thanks!
Sincerely,
Your backend dev3 -
I just got my first full time job as a junior front end developer just because they didn't have any other option (I was last on their list).
Should I be happy or sad about it?13 -
Some time ago I was working in a freelance gig. I was the backend developer and the front end guy and I had some differences in our postman collections, so I asked him to email me his exported json collection.
When he emailed me, it was really funny to see his signature, which included all the courses he had and his degrees and whatnot.
like dude, "I didn't wanted your CV, I just wanted the collection"
PS: I hope you get the idea from the image, even if it is in spanishjoke/meme long time no posting i got the tags wrong large email signature story cv ok i don't want to know that7 -
I never really got what a front end or back end dev was. Or when you call yourself a developer or engineer or designer. Especially when it comes to games there are so many different job titles - wth2
-
After a couple years working mainly on back end, I just decided to start working on my front end skills to get myself into a full stack path a couple days ago...
I feel like I've never coded before in my life. My girlfriend is a front end developer and she's been laughing out loud at my html all these days...
Now she tells me she wants to learn some back end in a near future.
I'll let you know how much I laughed after that. -
hi, I'm a javascript developer, I like to take software design patterns from the 70s and present them as new ideas to front-end developers.3
-
There are 2 types of people that I can't stand:
- Designers who thinks they can do the front-end as they use Photoshop
- Programmers that thinks the front-end is easy enough as put random bootstrap columns everywhere
Then when something doesn't work, they blame the front-end developer.
Try to communicate more, assholes, and do your job.6 -
I thought I was never going to be anything in life because there was nothing that I was good at. Then I started "web school" and it just clicked. I was good at it and I understood it. Finished with an A :) now I love my job as a front-end developer.1
-
Worst day of my life.
Got a job at an awesome company in another country but joining is in November.
Bunch of us got screwed over by the current company because of "downsizing" (out of the blue, they wanna start over with 4-5 devs like 2 years back) and they don't want to keep front-end developer as anybody can do it... (yeah I remember how the site was before I came... using ! important everywhere is not the solution).
Started looking for jobs (because I need to pay rent) so that I can spend 3 months there and then quit. Facing moral dilemma, as I don't want to do that to the company who hires me now.7 -
No idea how I ended up here. So basically started with simple wordpress websites, transitioned to react. This move was the hardest.
Then caught up on node and mongodb. And before i knew i was doing db, backend and front end tasks. Now i know bits and pieces of everything
I don’t like the term “full stack dev”. I personally feel like I’m a Jack of all trades and master of none. There’s so much to learn if you’re a full stack developer. Endless possibilities, endless rants and endless frustration 🤯 -
Newer Dev here. Just recently started in a position as a developer. I'm tasked with consolidating our monitoring systems into one cohesive display. After lumping together all the indexes and helping build a custom API I'm now working on front end. Front end is easy, I've done it before. Should be no problem. I was wrong. I spent a whole day fiddling with a React dynamic table and the CSS to format it. Today, I stumble upon the react-table component. Got the results I was looking for in less than 2 hours. I'm convinced that this was a lesson better learned early on.
-
So all this comments bitching front end devs seem to come from fresh out of college guys who pride themselves for solving hackerrank moderate problems. Oh you know how to use a backend framework and upvote answers on SO? Gotta be a genius definitely, you surely deserve to be called a developer.1
-
Apparently, as a front end developer, I do not need a Creative Cloud license anymore. I will have to rely on the Designers to cut up all my assets.
I could barely hold a straight face while I posted this rant.3 -
Hi guys,
In general, how much do you think a front end developer gotta know to get hired as an intern?14 -
Can a front end developer themselves a software engineer? I am really confused with these terms. Or a programmer? Or a computer scientist? I didn't go to a school, so I am not sure what are the differences..8
-
Is front-end developer (web developer) a well payed job?
I mean, how much is the average?
And it's a demanded job?4 -
Front end developer is still getting a ticket even though the security flaw lies in the back-end.
Today, every click of the UI has an overlay of circular progress indicator indicates that there will be a synchronous actions in an asynchronous requests.
1 click = 1 loading state -
Hi everyone, I’m new here and this is also my first rant.
I’m in the job hunting boat once again and I’ve been looking at Junior front-end positions. I thought I’d rant about something that always annoys me when looking through the requirements.
Wait, so in order to land a Junior front-end job, I have to be a freshly graduated person with a Master’s degree in CS, with a minimum of 3 years working experience and all that just to come code in HTML, CSS and JS?
For the love of god, I’m one person damn it. It’s not like I’m a self-taught developer that taught myself those things and more in a shorter period of time after quitting college.
On a more serious note, I’m not by any means claiming that I know everything, but having a CS Master’s degree for these types of positions is clearly ridiculous in my opinion.
Sometimes I wonder if the people writing these things are making it up as they go or whether they’re actually serious.8 -
I've added front-end development to my professional profiles. I've described myself as a "junior" developer given that my useful experience is measured more in weeks and months.
I've been advised to drop the "junior" and just describe myself as a "web developer". Presumably potential employers will read in the "junior" bit when they consider my experience and abilities.
What's the best way to handle this?
I don't want to cripple my chances right out of the gate. At the same time, it's pointless to mislead people about my capabilities - it's easy enough to test them.6 -
Front end web development :
In 7 the standard : HTML
In First semester : HTML , CSS , BOOTSTRAP
Now : HTML , CSS , BOOTSTRAP , JS , SASS , JSX , REACT , JS libraries and what not . It's seriously very deep . -
I started at a tiny Web firm as a front-end dev. I was OK at it at best. Only 6 months in to this part-time job (I was also a firearms instructor), the only backend developer left. I was then forced to pick up a book to learn ColdFusion 8. I had to finish a project for a multi billion company... even though I only knew basic queries and form submissions. At the end of the project I learned so much... I went back to pages that I knew were terrible and refactored them. Since there are so fresh CF developers I was able to get contract positions in many places. Over 6 months later I now work for one of the largest development companies in the states.6

404, Swag not found 🥲
I got sick and tired of waiting (4 years) for the debugging ducks to be re-stocked in the swag store, so i made my own.
Yes, I’m a front end developer and the domain redirects to an Etsy shop because I’m too fucking busy carrying the entire company that i work for on my back to develop my own custom one.
I’ll get around to it once PMO/Design/Marketing ops and Business get around to doing their jobs themselves.10 -
Just got my first job as a junior front-end developer. I am currently working on coding emails and holy crap trying to code for all different email clients. Never thought each client rendered stuff differently. (Outlook is the worst!)
But I am loving the job!5 -
confession time:
I am php laravel developer with little knowledge about nodejs.
I got selected by one startup as nodejs developer.
frankly I am not better nodejs developer than my competition who were rejected.
I completed oral interview with my nodejs theory knowledge at a time of technical round , they gave us task to create crud with fantastic front end and nodejs mongo as a back end.
I developed front end in bootstrap but at a time of backend, I just copy paste code from github.
and changed everything variable and other proof to hide reality. in mean time other candidates were actually coding everything then I took time to understand this code and I submitted after few candidates.
in last round they ask me to explain code which I explained properly and I get salary 40k/month INR.
I know it is cheating but I wanted this job badly.6 -
So, i started working at as a front end developer at my current job about 3 months ago, my boss now wants me to rebuild the system that took the last developer 5 years to build, and is made up of 40000 loc, in 5 weeks. And because the company cant afford to pay me any more to work full time on it, he's offered me shares instead.6
-
Little bit of background I've been a front end developer for the past eight years not a good one but I get by. Last 4 working with consulting firms for fortune 500 clients. Big projects big plans big structure, following someone else's lead and just knowing the basics of code reviewing, git flow, code deployment and everything else... life happens and i end up as a front end developer for a big company not tech related that wants to depend less from consultants and do more in house dev. Seems a pretty straightforward project front in angular. Back on python doing queries to a database with sql server. I finish the on-boarding and after two weeks finally get access to the repos. Worst spaghetti code I've ever seen. Seems like someone took a vanilla script project from 10 years ago and push it into an angular tutorial project. Commented code, no comments for the code, deprecated functions still there, no use of typescript nested ifs hell. I try to do my job doing new features do comments clean up a bit. Senior developers get annoyed6
-
Hello everyone ;)
i'm 19 yo and in past 3 years i tried to be a front-end developer and every time i start to learn, after few weeks i just give up. i feel so dumb and lazy and i don't like that and i decided to change my mind and my life. but sometimes i ask to myself "really do i want to be a programmer?! maybe i'm dumb for these kinda jobs"13 -
Worked on project that has multiple forms. After deployment colleague asks me if I made the Chrome in-build autofill form function. He really liked and loved the option. Colleague calls himself front-end developer. True story!1
-
Another (primarily back end) developer is helping out on my (mostly front end) project amends because I'm too busy with others. Should be a blessing but really I'll have to keep going to check on him or answer questions about the project. :/7
-
Just accepted my first "real" job as a front end web developer at a software dev shop! I say "real" because I have no clout at my current job and I'm repeatedly thrown under the bus by the head of IT and my tech recommendations are typically scoffed at.
Really ready to be in a place where everyone else breathes programming. Yay.3 -
Does any developer here does design work as well as code. I got pulled into it. was expecting a only dev job, according to the job description" but the creative team start handing me InDesign task and Photoshop task with no experience in design. is that crazy or normal for front end developers?10
-
That one classmate I had to do an internship with. The project has pretty simple, but we were both young to front end. I decided, that we use react, because it seemed like a fairly easy front end framework, with concepts a Java (not javascript) developer could wrap his head around.
Boi, I was wrong.
He was practically unable to implement a calendar, or rather get the sample code to work... For several days...
Needless to say that the project wasn't finished by the time we left and I feel kinda guilty for it.
Guilty that I couldn't find an other internship in time and was forced to pick this one with my classmate -
Anyone think a podcast with no specific topic hosted by programmer that are all experienced in different areas (EG. Game developer, front end developer etc) that just talk about random shit?
Just curious because I love the Triforce podcast and considering that is supposed to be a gaming podcast hosted by fairly different people.
Btw this is just a hypothetical, don't think I'd be able to pull it off!1 -
Hi guys!
Hopefully going to be heading to a job interview as a Junior Front End Developer over the next few weeks. Primarily a web designer but taught myself to code as well. The job uses HTML, CSS, JavaScript and Angular. I've heard a few people mention tests companies use in interviews, has anyone had any experience with these? What type of things should I prepare for?13 -
Was approached by a recruiter for a job in software development which could be filled by any less-experienced front-end developer in the recruiter's eyes, as long as you had basic Javascript knowledge. Turned out it was for router software/images mostly based on javascript.
They kept asking me proprietary information, which I couldn't know, yet, as I didn't work for them.
duh.2 -
Does anyone here has some tips to someone who is starting a small "company" for web/mobile development? I'm still a student, working as a front end developer from 7am to 3pm,and is in need of more money for personal reasons? Plus I live in a country from where people run away, and I want to start something my own.5

The joys of bring a Fullstack developer..
Sometimes beings junior Fullstack developer I find myself in tricky situations.
This past week I was invited to a meeting with all the front-end developers where we were presenting our software when a 500error popped up...( I was day dreaming looking out the window watching two birds hop around)Then I heard one developer ask what the problem was and another quickly replied "backend problem"... Still half asleep and deep in my new found interest in birds I blurted out "maybe the front-end is not sending the request properly".... Immediately the room fell silent... this sent a chill down my spine and I was brought back to reality, I looked round the room and everyone was staring at me like I insulted their mothers... I tried to make a joke of it but saying "Sorry I forgot this was a front-end meeting"... The lead architect who for some reason was also present then said "at least someone sees things differently"... And everyone laughed (although I'm not sure how sincere their laughs were).1 -
After meddling around with all kinds of goopy front end frameworks I decided to take a look at TypeScript (in Angular 2).
I must say, as a Java developer: Why have I only found this now??
Granted, I have only played around with it for one day.1 -
Started a new job this week, picking up the front end development of a property management system, since they're old developer just left.
Oh my god was his code bad, inconsistent use of js versions e.g only sometimes using lambda for anonymous functions, variable names that were a single letter, no comments, no documentation, and over 30000 lines split into almost 30 js files, following the logic of it is as fun as a hedge maze with no exit.2 -
When front end developer start testing just before working hours are complete 😑 and you have to stay to fix bugs.6
-
I've had a mentor who talked less and taught more. Before becoming a front end developer, I was doing flash. So, when I started front end, I didn't have any idea even about the basic stuff.
But, whenever I get stuck he will give a keyword for me to search. So, I learned how to survive in New areas & technologies - By googling. -
A Front-end developer working on various front-end pages and AngularJS projects for many years recently asked me, "How do you build this HTML page from scratch?" I was secretly thinking, "Why don't you try Dreamweaver?". T_T2
-
Today one of the more junior back-end devs told us, that he doesn’t plan to do front-end, because he doesn’t want to make design.
He basically told us that in his view FE devs do design work and that’s it.
What the f**? We have designers for that. Front-end devs are not the ones who make design. Reaaad uupp, boy6 -
So what exactly is it like working as a developer?
I'm still in the learning phase but I can't seem to picture what exactly it is you'll be doing daily if you get hired.
Is it like constant coding? But like, the site is already made and is huge.
Or is it like making new stuff? But then like, there's already a big company site.
It's what I wanna do but I honestly can't imagine how it will work different from doing it for yourself7 -
What's the favourite song of a front-end developer?
...I'm in love with the shape of you. UI UI UI UI.3 -
!Rant
Dear fellow front end developer, why?, just why would you use "!important" on every property value inside your @media query?2 -
Look who is here!!
First of all, when was it ever stable and I can bet nightmare for front end developer has just begun.5 -
"As a Product Manager in this project I need to work with a Front-End Developer so that the front-end side of the project gets developed perfectly"
PM I ♥ you.3 -
Them: I want to be a full stack developer!
Me: Are you sure?
Them: Yeah. absolutely I'll do whatever it takes!
Me: I'll hold you to that, I will piss you off everyday if I have to, to get you learning.
Them: OK, yeah, do it!
Some weeks later
Them: I want to be a front end developer, routing and models are confusing.
Me: I would laugh you out of an interview, keep practicing and just stick with one thing before chasing the next quick reward endeavor until the difficulty curve ramps up and you give up on that too!
Them: ... But it's hard...
Me: So practice, over and over until it sinks in, it's like playing the cello or whatever, just keep practicing!6 -
We are recruiting a front-end developer for 90k/year.
He refused to implement a simple ordering on our test, telling us “There are libraries to do that”. Apparently, TypeScript is not front-end.
Kindoff questioning our decision now.11 -
Recently, our backend team has gotten smaller. The company has stopped the collaboration with the company of the backend lead developer.
We are currently lacking backend developers while we have way too many frontend developers right now (compared to backend).
How can I, as a front-end developer, switch to back-end?4 -
I was talking with my mom on messenger and right after the moment I told her to stop believing in advertisement and not clicking on everything on the net... I saw a job ad on Instagram
"*cool company from my home country* front end developer for 3000 - 5000euro/month based on experience"
(which is a pretty good salary there, the avg is around 900euro/month)
me: *clicks*1 -
I can set up website in production doing both backend w database and front end with js csd html. But my design skills are not great. I prefer being behind the scenes but am i selling myself short? Am i really a full stack developer who just stinks at css?1
-
Me and my colleagues, just 3 of us are building a web app. I'm doing the front end part now after struggling with the back end. Does this qualify me as a full stack developer.4
-
Hello world 👋...
i just finished a mini project... i made a page for creating quick temporary apis. I'm not much of a front end developer, please check the page and tell me how i can improve it🙂.

When you are a front end developer you disassemble every other good website you visit and then forget about your real intention for visiting that website ;)
-
Hey Guys! I've been a trainee front-end developer for the past 4 months and I have my first junior front-end developer interview this thursday! What questions can I expect ?5
-
Alright, fellow coders, I need your help this time <3
I was thinking about getting a full stack developer position after school, with mean/mern stack. (Yes, I love js, but you can hate me for that later)
So, I just got an offer for a front-end developer position that I didn't apply to but was recommended for by my full stack prof.
Everything is great about that company, but! I'm not sure I'm good for that!
My question is: does being a front-end developer mean being good at putting together nice looking website?
I'm good with angular, but suck at material or just CSS in general.
I can implement business logic, but anything more complex than grids causes my eye to twitch.
So, is front-end developer supposed to be good at design part of it or not?
Google says yes, but I got other opinions from my friends, but they are still students too!
All hope on you guys! Thank you8 -
When another "front-end developer" appends the entire bootstrap CSS file to your templates because it needs to align two elements. To templates that never included any css framework cuz i hate them... Then he asked me for help because it did not work... I fixed an invalid CSS file reference.
FUCK HIS LIFE8 -
Question from my front end developer. "Where does the testimonial link go to?"
*facepalm* how dense do you have to be. Idk let's have it go to some section, on the same page even, that is called the testimonials section. A page you built.
Some days I wonder about people. -
Junior front end developer.
Interest in saas, js and jQuery,
1 year html5 and JavaScript, knowledge of image authoring (Photoshop)
Job is wordpress customisation.
18k... Degree in media required.
So you want a graphic designer for junior developer wage.. lol. -
My non-developer friend (who knows some very rudimentary basics about front-end web dev through me) asked ChatGPT to create a game with an arrow-key (left, right) movable player that shoots bullets.
He pasted the answer in a jsfiddle. The first iteration didn't work. It used DOM and CSS, so I told him he needed to instruct it to use HTML canvas. Lo and behold: https://jsfiddle.net/mehp8jay/16 -
What's the actual requirements to be called full stack developer? I do front-end, back-end, database, server, my own api's etc. I even have a t-shirt with "Keep calm and hug a printer". I've been doing this for 15 years and would not call me an expert in any part and certainly not privilegied for the full stack title. So what is?
If this was a humblebrag then please shoot me..7 -
It is normal to feel a bit hurt/down if you get feedback from a senior front-end developer, with the saying that you are still a junior??? I'm a bit confused.
But I know that I'm still a junior(1 year of experience professionally).3 -
How the hell am I meant to get a new job in Edinburgh/Glasgow so I can learn React/Angular/Vue when no-one will hire someone without experience in those frameworks?!
I was in 2 roles back to back and in that time, every single Front End Development role now available in the market requires commercial experience in React/Angular/Vue in order to proceed.
Even the 18k Grad/Junior Development roles require commercial experience in some sort of JS Framework yet I'm certainly not a Grad/Junior.
HOW DOES ANYONE USE IT COMMERCIALLY IF THEY'VE GOT NO EXPERIENCE.
I'm doomed.
For the record, I'm a Front End Developer with 3 Years of experience with personal study experience in React.2 -
Rant one of monday!!
Monday stand up meeting....
Reviewing jira tasks
Front end:" well, I dont think that is a priority but IM NOT TEST DRIVEN DEVELOPER SO...."
Jira task? Local env for testing in minikubes.
Ahhh the cool startup isssss sooooo cool he takes decisions about that, model the app or even estimates the deadlines of the product (the product not jira tickets)
Isnt it cool? Why not give that power to juniors? Why not tell them they dont need to learn and junior is just something they label to pay cheap for them?1 -
Haven't been on here for quite a while.. mostly worked as a graphic designer from home the past year. End of 2021, I'll transfer to the RnD department at my job to become a developer and help out with the front end part (because you know.. I do design stuff). Ok No probs, I have done some basic stuff, jQuery and (god forbid) wordpress stuff, should work out. New boss tells me to learn VUE so that I become a Vue frontend developer aaaand.. I'm shitting my pants with imposter syndrom dribbled all over things.. sigh.. luckily it's the weekend so I can take a beer and think about my future. 🍻1
-
I'm suppose to be a back end developer, yet I still seem to be doing front end all the time. Customer tweaks and requests are the bane of my front end life.
-
I was hired in a company for the title of Front-end Developer. I am qualified as because I have skills and experience with regards to doing front-end stuff. But it turns out that the work will be Full Stack. The employer was reasoning out that after your done with front-end task, I must do backend stuff as well so I would not be idle on may day's shift.
Is it my fault if I already done with my respective task and just mingle with random task of backend stuff that is not my real skills or forte?
I can understand and know PHP & MySQL, but I am not guaranteed to finish the task quickly compared to my backend counterpart in doing their task.
To cut the story short, they terminated my contract and claim that I am not performing well with my duties and responsibility, though most of the Front-end stuff I was assigned were already done and deployed.
There's no justice in this typical world of start-ups and noobie HR people that always one sided and they always say that it's their policy and they cannot do anything with regards to the incident happened to me.8 -
Is there such a thing as a front-end developer or are we all becoming either UX engineers or JavaScript developers?
An interesting article from Chris Coyier made me think.
https://css-tricks.com/the-great-di...2 -
A company refused me few months ago, as a front-end developer, calling me for interview as a full-stack developer!!
I really don't know what I should say?4 -
A junior front end developer colleage of mine doesn't know the meaning of aspect ratio and doesn't understand why he needs to understand it or why is it important for responsive designs.3
-
I have become the only thing I always hated in a developer. Building a project without a proper documentation.
As a solo developer in a company where I have to do database architecture, front-end, back-end, testing, NETWORKING (I am the most ignorant guy when it comes to networking), product design, there is no time for documentation.
But hey, I have structured the project, files and functions (with comment, parameters type and return type) properly and I understand what I've done even after 4-5 months without touching that specific project so I got that going for me which is nice... I guess.3 -
I'm getting to the point where I'm going to have to specialize in either front-end or back-end and move away from being a full stack developer. At least that's my thought since the startup is growing. Of course there's always the option that I get placed as a lead to oversee a whole project, but that's not guaranteed.
Startup world problems.4 -
Head hunting interview:
Q: Are your front end dev?
A: Yup, I'm website's frontend developer.
Q: Are you good at AngularJS?
A: No, I'm not. I only know Reactjs, and Ember.
Q: How about backend, you said you know Rail?
A: Yes, maybe for 3 month experience.
Q: So we need Angular guy, but it seem that you are BAD at Angular. Can you JOIN our next interview?
A: Sorry. I already told you that I don't care about Angular. Isn't it totally different with BAD at Angular? Thank for your consideration. I'm out.
Is there any double standard such as without AngularJS you will be considered that you are terrible at AngularJS?5 -
I am really frustrated.
front-end developer just left the job and now my boss often tells me to do front-end tasks when I am full backend guy. Worst part he does not seem to understand how difficult the switching to front-end is.1 -
Just came across a job posting on Linkedin, which basically expects the applicant to be a sysadmin, front end and back end developer at the same time.
Almost contacted the job poster just to send a WTF.3 -
For 10 years I've been a back end developer. Now I'm going full stack with react and angular4 front end development in my new job.
Unused to the new dev ui I just spent 3 hours debugging a redux state issue when I realize I used uppercase in the name of the value.....
N00b front-ender.1 -
Started a new role as a front end developer working with React, happy that i finaly won't have to work with wordpress anymore, having a great hope that I will learn from the best with my team, and then ... COVID-19 ... I have to work from home
first task, implement a feature on a react front end build with react boilerplate, first time seeing this repo and dispair quickly took over, there is no documentation except for clone and install, the code is a mess, the console is filled with errors and warnings ...
I did what I could, but it was not enought, my n+1 didn't complain but if I was him i'd fire my ass with no regret, now I understood why almost all my collegues are working as a backend devs.
I don't fear being fired, I fear the feeling of being not good, feeling useless, each morning I stare at the code and I become illiterate, I can't even touch a keyboard, now I don't know what to do, fixing this shitty app, trying to build something with react boilerplate and try to understand how the data flow, or continue my endless tutorial hell .1 -
we want you to be
- full stack developer (you do everything front end, back end)
- dev ops/SRE (you can sort out the deployment CI/CD pipeline, cloud platform services AWS/GC/Azure whatever)
- architect (you can design the software as well)
all in 1, you gotta be multiple roles/departments
good luck getting this experience on the job (hell in a startup is not for everybody and certainly not for me)
also why the fuck companies who aren’t startups ask for this idk
not sure if i missed any roles/competencies so far , don’t forget you need like >=3 years of experience possibly in every field for entry roles and more for anything higher than that9 -
I love the job hunt, just thinking about ending my life everyday now. Maybe I'm just a bad programmer - or just completely dumb.
Anyone have any advice on getting front end developer jobs?4 -
Why you literally took fucking half hour to fix this shit, I’m telling you, there is only a naming problem there, nothing else!
And his title is
“SeNiOr FrOnT-eNd DeVeLoPeR”4 -
My biggest annoyance as a front end developer is no longer knowing whether to do something in PHP or JavaScript anymore.
Seems to be creeping more towards JavaScript these days.4 -
*job opening says front end web developer*
*technical exam contains questions they used for the back end/web developer position instead of making a separate one for front end*2 -
I want to be a full stack developer, but should I learn front end or back end first? Or it doesn't matter?11

Full stack developer?! Which one is hard front end or back end? I'm talking about MEAN other than mongodb!4

My manager is apperently turning down applicants for the position of front end developer (the job I applied for, they made me backend developer). I just sit here wondering what he bases that decision of since the man can hardly use a computer. Job posting has been online for almost 10 months now.
But yeah, I'd rather have no collegae then an incompetent one. I also suspect they just posted the opening to keep me from taking vacation days. -
When I, a front end developer, have to work with backend, and to integrate everything with front end with zero help and even less training in that specific area. And oh, its php!!2
-
So I'm a young lad with a career in Front end development I love coding in HTML (yes I know it's not a coding language to some, but to a computer illiterate person it's wizardry so I've got that going for me) I've got skills in responsive design with css and skills in javascript, jQuery and a little bit of skill in PHP But I'm not sure what to go for next? I'm not much of a back end developer..got nothing against it, just never was my cuppa tea. I want to improve my skills but I'm not sure what to look into.. Any advice?2
-
The position in the company i started working for not long ago was for a dotnet developer. But it ended being heavy sharepoint focused and mostly front end javascript (that i am not very good at, that's why i wanted backend), doing stuff like hide this button, css that input etc. Really confused now and wondering how much il learn from this job considering its my first job as a developer and that i really want to do mvc with dotnet core. 😐😐 Does this have any value or i shouldn't be so picky for a first developer job?1
-
Question.
So I mainly work as a front end developer but I want to look into more backend stuff, would it be worth sucking it up and learn PHP and Laravel or Node.js and use something like Adonis?5 -

As a front-end developer, can anyone recommend any tools and tutorials on how to get started in game development ?11 -
I'm literally one junior developer building a front end stack for a company that uses the waterfall method of building shit...
My application has not been fully tested and none of the real user base has actually tested it. I have no clue what potential egde cases exist in my application. I did as much testing as possible but it's keeping me on edge that there is potentially something broken lurking underneath that I don't know about.
If it is broken it's all erupting into flames and there's nothing I can do about it because the application will have to go through a whole beuacratic process to allowed to be fixed.3 -
Wes Bos
Super funny front end developer which has great courses. I learned a lot from him and his humor is great and make his courses interesting and funny to watch.1 -
!rant;
A senior front end developer with 8 years of experience asked me today what does 'this' refer to in a function() inside of a property in an object, and why it doesn't work outside of the function!
I wanted to shout FUCK MY LIFE! But I held myself and explained it to her.
Worst part is I still don't qualify for 'senior' in my job title (less than 3 years of experience), hence my lower pay.5 -
I'm a web developer that would like to do some game development. I focus on front end, and have done backend work (not a lot of databasing, though). I mainly use JavaScript and Python, with enough knowledge of Java, C#, and PHP to get by when I need to. I've also got a background in graphic design.
What aspects of game development might be a good fit for my skillset?
Where and how do I get started? I've looked at Phaser in the past, since it was inspired by Flixel, a Flash game library I used for a some simple projects in college.3 -
Maybe I don't know, or don't understand what "Front end" actually means, many companies ask for a "Front end developer" and then I see their requirements, and wow, I think a lot of them are just one "step" away of being a Full Stack Dev position.
-
Did you become specialized in a different field than you originally aimed for and would you like to change that in the future?
For example, in my case, I did. I wanted to be a purely Front-End developer. I entered the business as a top-tier helpdesk agent, then started out as a back-end programmer and then I was hired again as a back-end programmer.
Even though I had constantly been looking for front-end opportunities, I've ended up in back-end because the front-end positions were apparently put away for those who already had tons of previous experience while I had none.
Perhaps someday I will pick up the thread again and become a Front-End developer. Who knows - only I do, for a part. I still have tons to learn. Build your own future!11 -
I've been a front-end developer for 12 years. I've done PHP, Angular 1, React, Vue, etc. I'm considered a lead at my company.
Now a manager has decided that all of the projects except mine are switching to Blazor. He insists that my project won't switch, but I don't trust him.
Am I better off biting the bullet and learning Blazor (a prospect that I'm not exactly thrilled about) or cutting out and looking for a new place where my existing skills will be useful?3 -

I didn't know that working with React will destroy my confidence like this, I know that coding is hard but being tasked to build a front end for a large project with React and use React Boilerplate (which is not for beginners) just a month after starting my first job as a front end developer is nowhere to be the perfect start to one's career.
the quarantine did not help, it made it worse, I have so much fear that I can't even see my code, I even wanted to write some simple side project to retake some confidence but I can't, I want to tell my boss that I can't continue but he's very nice that I don't want to worry him, and here I am having panic attacks and fear, not a fear of being fired, because I am prepared and I deserve it, but fear that I can't code any more, I am not a good developer, but it's the only thing I know.
I had low confidence before but not as much as this time, this time I feel like it's the end of everything, I keep staring at the screen for hours and I can't think straight.
I am lost and I don't know how to handle this, I became a bad father and a bad husband, I don't talk to anyone, not even my kids ...
as always thanks for reading me, I only have this community that understand me.4 -
Inheriting a project from a previous developer (front end stuff) where it takes more than 10 seconds for sass to compile. Like do you really need all this shit the site has bloody 4 pages.2

Since I'm a front-end developer I've been working on PHP quite a lot lately, not only for front-end but also for back-end stuff, data conversion and image manipulation.
I've found that it's quite pleasant to work with thanks to the tons of documentation around and how straightforward it is.
I don't get how much hate it gets but I assume it's because I'm only starting to work with but damn, you could even build a car with it!1 -
I’m a front-end developer. Whenever I need to introduce a new library or framework into the project, I always wonder if this tool is the best choice we have? How about its alternative? It always triggers my decidophobia.
I think one kind of data I can refer to is how many real repositories use it. So I crawl the JS projects on GitHub and record their dependencies usage and build a website called npmusage to check whether I should use it or not. More than 85K repositories have been fetched already.6 -
When back-end developer starts doing front-end stuffs.
Shouldn't "!important" means "not important"? -
How to become a UX/UI designer given my situation?
So, I have worked as Software Developer for 3.5 years now. My work has involved mostly Backend, Java. For sometime I worked on front end but I am not aware of the front end architecture etc.
I am a graduate in Computer Science.
So right now, I have a good salary in a big MNC. How can I become a UX UI Designer for a good company?14 -
Okay guys.. I am so lost! I want to be a developer but can't decide on a certain area. Like should I be a web developer or mobile app? If I am a web developer, should I concentrate on front end or back end.. If mobile app developer.. Should I focus on Android or iOS or cross platform?
I really can't decide what to do and what to learn? Feels like to learn everything and at the end not learning actually anything.
Any suggestions guys? I will be really grateful!7 -
It's a career suicide wanting to transitioning to desktop developement? I'm tired of fighting with tons of external dependencies (VPN, database, other microservices) just to test a microservice or a piece of front-end, I just want to focus on code.
My job description is software developer but I'm spending more time playing the sysadmin to keep my local developement environment working than what I spend actually coding.5 -
How long do you think it'll take to build shopping cart capability, order management system and integrate into a payment gateway with 1 backend developer and 1 front-end developer?
If there are any readily available libraries or OSS for these, please let me know.8 -
How I fucking hate those programmers who say they only can do backend stuff because they don't like front-end work... You godamn pussies, as a programmer you have to be able to adapt to a given projects requirements. If you are not able to do that you are not a real developer in my eyes. So grow a pair and the next time you have the chance to do some frontend work take it, maybe there is someone who in return would like to dable in some backend work for once.13

Looking for an online Bootcamp to learn front end development and eventually full-stack. I was looking at a combo of Free coding camp and Udemy Complete web developer Bootcamp. Any suggestions?1

"A day in the life of a mobile app developer"
No back-end validation or back-end string sanitisation.
All in the front-end. -

Joined a new company as front end developer after working for a legal tech for 3 years. The codebase is shit here. There is this ReactJS developer who has done everything except for following standard code practices. No modularity, no reusable components. Some files go beyond 2000 lines of codes. It is a literal nightmare.
The worst part is, he does not understand that he has written the worst code. I dunno how to handle this now.8 -
Thoughts on Flutter!
I'd like to see something like flutter for front end web development. I like the approach used by Google for Hybrid app development.
Dart language fits perfect for the case. Static typing, OOPS, Generics, state management, UI design everything right out of the box.
I don't have to create layout separately like HTML in web or XML in android.
Everything is managed by Dart alone.
It's like what developer wishes for UI rich app development.
I'm not saying Flutter or/and Dart is the perfect solution. Every language has pros and cons. (Maybe not applicable to JavaScript! Haha! ) But still The overall solution to UI development is way cleaner than web.3 -
Hi, I need some advice about android app development. I am a front end web developer and I want to get into android development. I have created a simple restaurant app using phonegap and knockoutjs but I didn't like the performance. Can you recommend how should I get into android development? Nativescript and ionic also lack performance as far as I have researched. Any help is appreciated.11

I have started a freelance full-stack project with some existing code-base and it was horrible. They only have API endpoints for fetching whole data. No limit, No sort, No filter. They are doing all this shit on the front end. They are even aggregating data on the front end. Seriously who the fuck does that? On top of that the guy who has coded it was a senior developer. I am wondering now, did he write that kind of code purposefully or this kind of shitty devs actually exists?2
-
It is this time of the year that I get to work on a shitty project to add some new functionality to it, it is a front end part of the project which before was externally developed, so now I have to deal with this BS Marionette mess where nothing they wrote comply to standards, like the fucking router.js doesn't look anything like the Marionettes doc, the bootstrap they used they fking decided to override classes in custom css and turn the 12 col grid system into 5ths or shit, then they created some autmated tests with bunch of intricated selectors selecting by 'labels' instead of !!!!FUCKING WHAT ARE THIS FOR IDs!? - fuk me - so I better decide to procrastinate on this project since luckily enough we don't have a deadline and I wouldn't care if we had either! My job is java developer, and yes I feel good about learning new things and learning front end. BUT NOT THIS CRAP DEPRECATED MttehorseShit!

Just an appreciation post. Ant Design is the best React Library that I have encountered so far. It's so easy and clean to create new modules. It has already built-in features, especially for Tables.
As a backend developer who has been working in front-end for the past 6 months, I love this library. -
Today is the last day of my placement.
Over the past year, I began working on small front end bugs, to becoming the sole front end developer on the project, to being full stack.
Back in July, I and the other dev on the project released the app into the wild. It now is reaching 100 users.
The app has a lot of external dependencies (10+), one of which could cripple it entirely should it cut us off (which they can do at any time, it's a free API).
I was given, effectively a week and a two days to do a complete handover/transfer of knowledge to the placement student that will be taking my place. They hadn't touched front end (like me) when starting, but also had no experience in node/js.
As of this, I can't leave feeling like I've fully completed my work, and I feel bad leaving the new guy with these clients. Undoubtedly I'll be doing some off-the-record help. -
It is when I'm doing my fyp during my college studies. I in-charge on the front end part, but i do a lot of debugging for back end part because my teammates aren't very good at it.
full of coding day and night, i found it is enjoyable 😁😁😁
from then i consider my career to be a web developer. and here i am 🤓 -
I'd probably say the activity that's made me a better dev is going to school for graphic design. Though it would help more if I was a front end developer, it helps me think more about the end user seeing as that's what my schooling focused on. Outside of schooling, probably painting and drawing just due to thinking creatively in my free time I think helps me approach dev problems in different ways than some of my non visual co workers.

Job Interview Help!
Hi Devs! Applying for a junior front end developer job here and have been called by a recruiter. He's explained he will:
"be asking some technical questions, so it might be worth a quick bit of revision on your JavaScript knowledge and terms!"
Has anyone come across these before and what level of knowledge would I be expected to know for a junior role?
I'm going to do the test either way as it'll be great experience but a bit of prep is always good! -
Hey guys, so i have a dilemma. I am an aspiring front end developer who has learnt html, css and i have solid vanilla experience with various random projects. Now i wanna learn a framework/library
thoroughly and i cant decide between React or Vue. I tried out both and i don't have a preference.. There are still more React jobs in my country but Vue is becoming more and more popular.. What do i do now8 -
My first rant. Which isn't really a rant but it is kind of...
Took a new job supposedly as a software developer. Ends up being CTO position. Now responsible for understanding the code of 6 people in a different country so as to move code dev to the country we're in...(not retaining the 6 after 2.0 release) Been 3 months.. Too much data. Cannot compute. Had to learn too many new things and the fuckers switched the front-end midway from Vue to React. First weeks essentially wasted. Now at the end and I'm supposed to know everything.
Also, I hate Symfony with a passion now. Loved it when it was hidden under Laravel. -

So coming to the two year anniversary of my first internship as a dev, I want to say how lucky I am to work in this field. I've gone from being a strictly front-end developer to being a full-stack software developer and one of the things that's allowed me to progress so quickly is the fact that in this field, we are able to contribute from the jump and get our work out there. I have friends in other fields who, in their entry level positions, don't get the chance to apply what they've learned in school and in their own individual studies. I'm lucky to work in an exciting field and that motivates me to get keep getting better. -
https://remotelyawesomejobs.com/job...
Looking at the "ideally you should" sections doesn't make me feel this is a junior position:
You are passionate about making data useful to the lay-person, there is no data you couldn’t derive visual meaning from. D3.js is your go to and Canvas is your friend.
You build components in your sleep, rock solid and performant using atomic design patterns.
You bend CSS processors to your will or throw them out and code by hand.1 -
Not taking an UI/UX class. I think this would help me be a better front-end developer. And also, not enrolling in a coding boot camp full time like I always wanted to. I learn better in a classroom.
-
I'm a beginner web developer - and I've run out of motivation / inspiration.
I'm a lazy teen who wants to be a web developer. Everyone and then I will start some project - and probably never finish it 100%. These last weeks I am really out of motivation or inspiration to do anything. I've learned a lot of things and I want to make something, I wanna test my skills. So - is there any place I can seek for inspiration on Front end web development? Or just if you need some help with any front end project - contact me.10 -
My way through front end started with a simple request of changing a blog CSS.. which I knew nothing of. Looking back it feels odd starting with CSS then HTML, JS and now first PHP; but oh well what ever works?
That was a couple of years ago and lately I've done couple of minor freelance projects and have helped students at my university with it (I studied network engineer because I doubted myself..).
I never felt that I knew enough of programming or front end.. that I wasn't really "good enough" to apply for a job even though I almost finish the frontend certificate at FCC, did the Android application schoolar via Google and have worked a lot with Adobe CC overall and help people with their front end issues from school, even with library's I haven't touched (mighty power of Google search and quick learning).
Now sit here as a stockmen in my lunch break being all excited for one thing based on a conclusion I took last week.. if I never try to follow my passion for it, I'll stay a stockmen.. so I applied for s frontend job and got a call in for an interview today. I still doubt myself but figure I must try.. I do not wish to stay where I have been the whole year but to move on and work as a front end Dev. If I get it.. than Santa came early and if not.. well.. keep on evolving and trying I guess. *Holding thumbs* -
Any Web Dev or Design managers out there who interview candidates, should a front end developer have a Github for his portfolio or hosted on his own site? I'm torn.3

Inherited a legacy system from a previous "developer" who wrote code to sanitize input from sql injection in the front end and then called an web method called execSql which accepts am sql statement in a string value!
Obviously the app ran under admin privileges.2 -
As a front-end developer who has a firm grasp on web tooling, I still think the sheer amount of knowledge needed for dev-ops/deploy tools is staggering.

As a graphic designer who works on side as front end developer and UI designer... Starting with asp.net is notjing just hell 😑 I miss my layout designs already...1

I find it very hard to find a job in my country as a front end web developer with backend knowledge aswell
But seems like java and c++ are the ones people are looking for, should i switch to them or move in some other country ?6 -
Recent graduate asking about programming work.
I just graduated a bachelor's for Games Programming. I've studied c++, Java, Unreal, Android studio and Mathematics. Also includes group projects and game specific stuff.
I spent a year in Germany doing software and database courses which included 6 months working as a front end developer as an intern.
I keep getting job offers for front end work but I'm seeing no interest from software or games. I hate websites, specifically front end and don't want to end up stuck in that career.
Should I avoid front end jobs and hold out for something else, or do you think I should bear with it for now? I'm currently waiting on an interview for a 12 month contract as a front end developer at a rate of £200 a day, 5 days a week. Yet I have absolutely no idea if this is good or not.
Any advice you more experienced people can give me? 😰3 -

So, I was call to be phone-interviewed at a company that I kinda liked.
They were looking for a full-stack developer.
I'm more of a back-end but I'm not blind to some front-end things, but I'm not expert to any front-end framework or technology.
I'm pretty good with Java and Python, and have 8+ years of experience.
The thing is, they were looking someone like me BUT also with React and JS knowledge. So it was a bye bye for me.
That made me start thinking: Should I start learning a framework and become a full-stack developer?
Which framework would be a good one to start with?
(I've made a couple of native Android apps, and once I tried to learn React-Native but I couldn't last more than two weeks with it).7 -
Is there such a thing as natural talent for specific categories of developers?
I've seen this occur a few times. I have more affinity for front-end development or separately, for UX, so I naturally see wireframes, I naturally know what looks good or not to a user, and I can relate to a user.
I've seen multiple backend devs who share the same complaint that they don't have a knack for front-end and that they hate front-end. They can create beautiful architectures and solve complex problems, but they tell me: "Don't ask me to tell you what looks like a good layout or not because I have no idea".
The same thing happens to me when it comes to back-end (even though I'm a Fullstack developer): Don't try to give me extremely complex problems because I will likely get very stuck, but ask me if a design would look good, ask me to design a website UX wise and I will do well without a great deal of effort.
I wonder why I have a hard time with back-end and others vice versa. Maybe we're trained more in certain areas or our brains function differently.
And so.. I wonder if more people see this happen in their workplace and if this observation holds true.3 -
I'm interested in learning c#(aspnet cire, wpf, uwp etc, all the stuff I can do with it). Does anyone have any recommendations in where and how to start? I'm looking for some Remote work to do as freelance or "startup", low pay is alright if there is not too much pressure. Hi, I'm a junior developer who's looking for his first front end job.
I have just finished my 8 months internship as a front end developer in a startup in Paris.
Now I have some opportunities which allows me to work in Paris, Luxembourg or Shangai.
I speak English French and Chinese.
I hesitate a lot now, if you are me, which city you will choose to get your first job there, and why?1 -
Hi there !
Does anybody have a motivational story about starting as an intern and working towards your end goal ? (front end developer / back end developer or whatever it might be that you do now)2 -
I'm a former .Net developer turned front-end javascript. I want to try a new programming language on my mac. What would you recommend?11
-
I fucking hate it that "front end developer" came to mean "data flow for react engineer". It seems most frontenders now don't understand shit about HTML and its standards, don't know anything about basic accessibility and proper content structuring.
It's even worse with the styling. Cascade? The fuck is cascade? Scope everything! And, of course, write that CSS as a JS object because how else. Fluid typography? If by fluid you mean 16px, sure. Any more advanced techniques? Lol forget you're getting rounded boxes with a shadow and you're gonna like them.
But yeah, I'm glad they're overengineering Redux again because their reactivity model is fundamentally broken. That's exactly what """frontend""" should be about.10 -
Yesterday, I talked with one of my friends I found a month ago on Instagram. I messaged him if he can help me making the homepage of my website responsive, bcoz I am really a noob in CSS. He stated himself as a front-end developer.
So talks go formally, and lastly, I ended up sayin' "Will provide you the script tomorrow"
Now after all when I was supposed to give him the repo link, his Instagram profile didn't land me on the same page. He probably deleted or deactivated his account
wtf2 -
Advice needed please.
I have an interview friday for a front end developer. Currently I am junior dev with just a full stack certiticate.
It’s the typical skillset requiremnts JS HTML and CSS with familiar with React, Angular and Vue.
As far as languages I really do not know JS but I know php. Taken a JS class in school found it to be fairly simple and that was my second language I learned.
How do I spend the next 48 hours? Learning JS? Spending time going over frameworks? Refreshing HTML/CSS?
I am much stronger back end than front end but I am hoping this will be more of a front end engineer job requiring the configuration of node packages and such.1 -
Hey guys!
Well, two weeks ago I was hired as backend developer. I am the only one with macbook. The company use docker for development... On Linux, there is no problem. Docker is up in like 5 sec. But on my mac, it takes like two minutes and refresh like 20 sec. Our front end with macs has same problem. Have anyone expirience with docker and mac? ❤
Thanks a lot!4 -
Hi Everyone,
I am working as a jr front end developer and wanted to study more about performance profiling in Chrome and finding memory leaks using Dev tools. I searched online for a while and not able to find a nice place to start with, can anyone help me out with a resource from where I can start the debugging performance using Chrome Dev tools.
It would be very helpful. -
So I'm not sure what I should learn next. Developers love vue more than react. But I prefer to work remotely and I lost the count of how many job ads require React js experience. Every employer wants react. Would you still suggest to learn vuejs despite this? Right now I know javascript and I abuse jquery (front end developer here)2
-
Curious to know what devRant thinks about a macbook air (newest model) with i5 and 8 gb ram for a developer.
Usage consists mainly of running jetbrains IDEs, like IDEA and CLion, maybe some front end using sublime text.
I know it would work now, but I'm curious if it would still be decent in, say, 2 or 3 years. Thanks!2 -
Nothing like constantly having to spend 3-5 days of spin up on trying to help another team with their microservices because they have such a severe lack of documentation that I can't just follow a readme to get their projects running. Instead, I have to bug one of their developers to help me get it up and running (because they use non-standard project setups and dependency management), delaying things even more. No matter how much I scream that we need documentation no one makes it a priority.
Did I mention these are microservices written in Golang and I'm a front end developer? And I'm being made to work on back end tasks because we have a crazy high attrition rate and they won't back fill the back end positions.3 -
Is it better to be a full stack developer or switch to some form of domain expertise ?
With the advent of chatgpt it's really easy to have entry level knowledge on pretty much any technology
Full stack devs too operate in similar manner , (good in backend can build some decent front end with bootstrap )
Basically if i have to be smarter than the AI , should I try to develop a deeper expertise on a particular stack or still prefer to jack of all master of none3 -
Working on a project (auction website) with a group, one of them described himself as an experienced web developer (both front and back end). Two weeks into the project, he won't shut up about using Bootstrap and how great it is (even tho we decided on not using it); fucks up even the simplest queries and doesn't know any OOPHP. Needless to say, he got kicked pretty soon and after making some nonsensical threats to the group members we never heard of him again. Or so we hope.5

Hi all,
Are there any developer tools that you wish were available for React, Angular or Vue?
A few schoolmates and I are looking to build an open source developer tool in order to help current engineers who are working with some of the popular front end technologies, such as React, Angular and Vue. We have seen a few prototyping tools for React and Vue and we also came across Bit Dev for React - would angular or vue developers like a tool like Bit Dev? We are looking to build something impactful and meaningful to the community and would really like your opinion on any developers tools that you would like to see.1 -
Hey guys, so i'm just about to complete my android application project which I started a year ago.
You can say it's sort of my baby. I've put all my efforts into it. The backend is almost done. The problem which i'm struggling with is the front end.
The front end of my app looks like shit. I tried to do everything to make it look elegant and classy, but all in vain.
And I can't afford to hire a front end developer or graphic designer. Can someone suggest me what to do.
I'm open to any suggestions as it's the first app i'll upload on the play store, I just want it to be perfect.26 -
The only time I didn't envy git is when most of the team had to refetch after our lead front-end developer deleted trunk, committed the deletion, and then a backender had to re-base it off his repo. Until then, I thought only my dog could fetch for days.

web dev. ui/ux. full stack.
I am not a senior developer but im doing multiple jobs like full stack dev, ux designer and architect.
I only like front end given the choices.
I want to do some vr but the market seems not ready for that so i can only do some learning at home. -

How do you pick a new language to learn?
I am a C# developer and at work I work on desktop apps and legacy web services etc.
I fancy learning something else so I can have a bit of variety when working on personal projects etc.
I am doing a distance learning degree which has used Java and Python so far, with some PHP and JS etc to come later.
I’m drawn to Ruby as I already have experience there, but I was also thinking about looking at Node as that covers back end and front end all using JS which is definitely useful in general as I look at moving to a more web based role.7 -
I'm a django/web developer looking to learn some front end techniques like angular or node. anyone interested in learning some backend for teaching some frontend? is this allowed to do here?1

Hello Everyone, My younger brother wants to build a career as a software developer but he is confused about which profile pays more backend or frontend in India. Can anyone suggest me which profile is better? I have checked this source https://interviewbit.com/blog/... and found the average salary of both profiles but everyone gives different answers.5

Should every front-end developer read the specs and follow every RFC for the languages they are using?

After watching this project based on GPT-3 where software is directly able to convert simple English sentences into React components:-

I first felt awestruck and then realised that it was a right decision to start learning data science while still having a successful career as a front-end developer🤓 -
I am a front-end developer with 2 years of experience and I want to shift over to devops role. How can I get started and what are my chances to interview for any devops role especially since I haven't worked as one or as a sysadmin? Any help is greatly appreciated.1

I was laid off last week due to economic issues in my company. Can you give me an idea of what the job market is like right now? I'm a full-stack developer with 6 years of experience in RoR, Elixir Phoenix, and JavaScript front-end frameworks like ReactJS and Vue. I have 15 days left of my 30-day notice period, and I haven't been able to secure an interview yet. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
