OH MY FUCKING GOD!
My startup actually made the first place in an accelerator program! We'll start negotiations on Monday!! I'm so fucking excited!
Plus I met a really nice person on the train on my way back home! What the actual fuck is that a nice day!19 -

I did a little website where people can make reservations. I made an administration section where my client can create a reservation and delete them.
But every day damn I have this conversation. EVERY DAY between 9am and 10am:
My client to me: Can I ask you a question?
Me: Yes?
Client: [the question]
Me: Open the documentation i wrote for you.8 -
So... I wanted to share something I made this weekend... 😁😁
Made an ls program which includes colors and icons! It is a work in progress and probably contains some bugs here and there, but I really wanted to share with you all.
The happiest thing to me about it is that I made it in pure C and had a blast creating it! It’s my first actual C project and it also made me realize that there is probably no language I can love more than C.
Take look if you are interested and tell me how it is 😊 suggestions and fixes are more than welcome 😁
https://github.com/Electrux/...
Just wanted to share the experience. Have a good day everyone! 😁33 -
So I met Lew from unbox therapy, when he came for the one plus 5T star wars launch event to India.
Just wanted to share that, he's one of the most down to earth celebrities. And even with all of that fame and stardom he still lends an ear for everything you want to say. He also motivated me to start my own YouTube channel. He made my day 😅.
Thank you Lew 😍.22 -
My work mate just sent this, it made me feel better:
"If you ever have a day when you fucked up badly, made a huge mistake and you feel like a total kluts, click this link: https://google.com/maps/... and feel happy in that you didn’t fuck up bad enough for it to show on google earth!"

A story of love, loss, and devRant.
My favorite sunglasses were a victim of hurricane Irma. They were sitting on the park bench when a powerful gust of wind blew them onto the cement floor, where both lenses were fucked right where I look out of them. I bought these sunglasses at Disney with my family and have not stopped wearing them since. I was pretty upset.
Enter devRant. Sad and without sunglasses, I hoped that virtual ones might suffice. Lo and fucking behold, in the profile editor, there they were: my exact sunglasses, even with the choice between silver and gold. Absolutely fucking perfect. Made my day.10 -
The other day I got a call from Windows Support about my computer being infected with a virus. I only have a Mac but knowing this was a scam call I played along for 15-20 minutes. Then I finally told the person calling that I don't have any computer running Windows and he got quite angry and wondering "why are you wasting my time?". Told him it was to prevent him from calling and scamming other people. He yelled "fuck off" and hung up. Made my day :)
How do you handle these phone calls?13 -
When I get home, my wife will probably tell me about all the fun things she did with the kids today. She'll tell me about all the frustrating things they did too and stories about how they made her almost pull her own hair out.
Then 20 minutes later she'll ask me how my day was and I'll say, "Oh, I dunno. I worked on a really hard SQL query today..."3 -
I was wearing my tux t-shirt today and while walking through the city I suddenly heard a boy (around 3-4 years) say to his mom: 'He had a penguin on his t-shirt!'
I smiled and this made my day. :)7 -
How did I learn programming?
When I joined college I was literally the dumbest in the class... I didn't even know what is a char and what is a String.. Our lecturer made fun of and humiliated me in front of the whole class....also my parents barely afforded my college tutotion fed...
So one night I sat with myself and reevaluated myself and decided that no matter how hard it is gonna be, I must become an excellent programmer....spent restless nights and days learning the core of programming in c++ then switched to Java *best day in my life* and also learned Android development.. And later JavaScript "mostly worked with jQuery and AngularJs*
In my final year project I built an Android web browser that even the lecturer that made fun of me was impressed by..and my app was rated the best project of that batch.
Now I'm working as a Java web dev and made a promise to myself that I'd learn something new every day.8 -
Today was hell on earth as for user support. Phone going non stop, tickets coming in faster than we were able to process.
At the end of the day I had to make a symlink for a customer which is fine. But, the day was so busy that I just couldn't focus anymore.
I've made 1K+ symlinks in my life probably but I couldn't remember if the source or destination comes first with a symlink.... The day has been hell and I just couldn't bring up a single second of focus anymore..
Fuck it, I'll do it tomorrow. I know I can do this but I don't trust myself with this right now in case of a huge webshop (swap the source/destination: webshop gone).
I think I'll thank myself for this tomorrow.13 -
Big thanks to the guy who blamed the poor structure of a legacy database on me today because I'm young. You made my day4

I love fakeupdate.net - that's the way I teach my colleges to lock their screen when they leave the room.
Yesterday I made a Windows 98 screen, turned off the other monitor and disabled the keyboard. First my college was so cool and said: "I know this already just press f11" then he freaked out why this isn't working and wanted to call the support. Was a funny day.5 -
This made my day so much! (The stickers quality is awesome by the way, much better than I expected)14

Designer - *showing an animation made with after effects* Lets add this really cool animation in our website
Me - Actually that will be very difficult with plain CSS. We will have to use some heavy animation libraries, and we don’t have that much time for the project.
*next day*
Designer - Found a better animation
*shows another animation*
Me - *awkwardly* This is more difficult to implement than the previous one
*next day*
Designer - What about this one
*shows yet another difficult animation*
Me - *ashamed and questioning my skills* ummm....
Designer - you know what, just add fade-in-out7 -
Hey guys :(
The rant will be long.
Today was one of the worst day ever.
I'm feeling so shitty right now.
I'm 19 and I started my apprenticeship about a half year ago on a very small company.
From day one I had many things to do, every day is hard and a new experience. But I'm learning a lot.
Two months ago I had my very first presentation for a client. I was really excited and nervous but everything was fine and the client as well as my boss were proud of me.
Today I should present again a prototype for the same client. But this time not directly personal, instead we did it via TeamViewer. After the client finally found out, how to open and start this shit, the disaster tooked its course.
After explaining him the conzept, I wanted to show him in the software. For some reason it suddenly stopped working. I've just made a change recently which leads in all appeareances to an error .
Because of that error I couldn't proceed, so I have to explain and show him the data I created before I made the changes.
With that everything Just worked fine, I could explain and visualize everything. It didn't Matter and didn't changed anything, only the Name was a Name from me.
The client was very relaxed about this error. He said that it is a prototype , it is not serious.
Furthermore I showed and demonstrated him everything.
But my boss wasn't very surprised and Happy about me. He made me responsable for the error, I should have prepared everything better and this all was Shit.
This made me really, really sad. It sounded so hard.
I know that I've made a mistake, but it's human. I'm only 19. I'm not perfect. Sure, I could have prevented it, if I had tested all possibilites right after I had made the changes again. I prepared the whole presentation on the weekend, on my personal freetime. I spent so often so much time in my freetime just for my job, for my apprenticeship. To get what? A fat bite, a kick in the ass. I'm doing so much, but this is not acknowledged. But when I make something wrong - then I'm the shittiest person.
Damn. Don't know how to handle this situation. This has gone to far today.
Yeah, I could have tested More, but I only tested the existing Data. I prepared the presentation very Well. This is so sad.11 -
When I managed to minimize the processing time of the project I'm currently handling. It went down from 30min-1hr to 7min-15mins. The project owner was so happy, said it made his life easier. I was told I did a good job by my manager.
I feel like a real dev then and there. So whenever I'm having a bad day, feeling insecure, I try to remember that day when I was able to do something right. :) -
if i learned one thing from my internship it's "Just do it".
I always wanted to master parallax but didn't dare to. My boss then forced me into learning it. I made my own parallax script that day.4 -

Mondays - the day everyone hates and the day that I hated.
But I made changes to my routine on mondays. Instead of trying to maximize my time in the bed - I go up before 5 AM and drive to the office. Spend a hour in the gym (I really need it), eat breakfast and have a couple of hours for myself in the office.
I manage to get more things done during this time, because people are not bothering me :)
Well, happy monday to you!8 -
Actually just 2 hours ago my boss showed me his "hack" which solved a problem he worked on half of the day.
My eyes suddenly began to itch heavily and I felt a strong urge to quit immediately.
The problem was no big thing and we actually spoke about it at noon and I made a proposition how he could solve it.
Turns out he .... aaaaaahhhh I better do not mention it, as it may summon evil spirits... sorry.5 -
Anyone here put Easter eggs in their code, and care to share examples?
I made a custom script to rotate a log file once a day in my program. So at the bottom of the roll I added a nice little print. See attached.16 -
My stickers and stress ball arrived,
Thanks @dfox and @trogus!
I'll definitely tell my friend thanks for the rant he made lol, which is still getting ++'s to this day.2 -
Today I feel like a monster.
Due to the optimizations/automatizations I have made to the processes in my job, some low level employees are not longer required.... Ever again.
Their last day of work was yesterday, but I'm still uneasy if this is how life is now. If every job will be removed to be made by machines.10 -
So at the end of last month our complete team was fired because restructuring in the company. We have had this countdown running since the first day we got the news. Ive made this photo yesterday so only 3 days and a few hours to go and then a month of sitting on the bench at my work (Im a consultant and work on project basis for other companies)4

Everyday single day I have to give time for family, personal work and office. Prioritized in that order.
End result : low quality family time, pending personal projects. Office work - well that one is OK I guess cos the time is dedicated.
Solution : made a deal with wife - one day on weekend dedicated for family (she can plan anything she wants) and I will not do any work. Other day dedicated for my personal work/time (no family plans).
Divide weekdays similarly. On family days I checkout at sharp 4pm from office and come home straight spend the rest of the day with family alone. On the other days I stay either at office or go somewhere to work or hangout with dev buddies.
*Wife agrees*
End result: Quality family time. No interruption when coding (a dev would understand the importance of this). More productive work.6 -
Me: I can't get a grasp on frontend and nice interfaces...
Friend: it's actually quite easy:
Rule 1 -Don't reinvent the wheel..
Rule 2 -That does not look like a wheel.

An interesting read about why the second (and last) WhatsApp co-founder left Facebook while leaving behind a whopping 850 million because ethics/morals.
"I sold my users' privacy to a larger benefit," Acton told Forbes. "I made a choice and a compromise. And I live with that every day."

Comment on a GitHub issue on one of my repos:
"Almond I posted this feature request last month, please start to work on it in your free time"
Dude, that's just made it a whole lot less likely I'll even give that feature request the time of day. Take your entitled arse attitude to the bank and pay me to do it if you care that much.
Also, free time?!?! Hahahaha.5 -

Tired, went to bed early. Took two melatonin because I haven’t been sleeping well. Layed down at 9:30pm, tried to sleep for hours, couldn’t, and ended up feeling wide awake at like 11:30. Memories of my parents and their endless shit resurfaced and flooded into my mind, and made me various combinations of livid and sad and distraught. Got up and sat in the closet at 2am to try and clear my head, and eventually gave up and started my work day at 2:45. Got quite a bit done, and it cleared my head. Yay!
But it’s now 6:25am and I have standup at 10:30, and a day full of meetings. :<
… and plenty of memories I would very much rather not remember.11 -
Watching some Talent-Show with my family. There is this 16-years old pretty good singing boy. My father looks at me and you can read from his face: "Why can't you do sth. like this ?"
The next day I show him some really good webapps and games I made and he just says "Well, I don't care until you make money with this."

'hey honey look what i made! It works!'

To this day I don't know what happened. I had to restore my project and re-write the last half hour.4 -

Applied for 4~5 internships yesterday, got an answer today for the most interesting one saying that the position is still open, that they are interested by my profile and that they want to meet. That really made my day 👌8 -
Just found out out what people google about programmers...
the last one made my day. I think it was this feeling called "funny" hahajoke/meme google society made my day programmers what is 'feeling' we have no feelings *grr want brains!!* scared af is my boss using google3 -
The face of confusion my boss made when I suggested the development of a simple "api" (one end point) to solve a particular issue we faced after improving our infrastructure made me realize I need to abandon this ship...
He really can't wrap his head around calling a URL and doing something on a server although that's what we do every fucking day...2 -
A few months ago, I changed my laptop from Windows to a dualboot of Windows and Linux (NixOS). Since then, Windows has never seen the light of day.
Best decision I've ever made - Windows is useless.17 -
I was limited to how much time a day I could play video games, but I was told that if I made my own games I could play them as much as I wanted.
I took an HTML course on Codeacademy unaware that it had nothing to do with game dev and that's where it all started.2 -

When I switched jobs from a slow-paced media company, to a fast-paced startup and learned what my team leader can accomplish in a day, would take me atleast 3 days... Not to mention doing things I wouldn't dream of thinking about them.
This experience has made me doubt my very own existence, let alone skills.2 -
So I've been doing some code jobs now and recently they pushed me to a new level.
This company worked with some silly management app made in cpp which they asked me to edit a little bit giving it another style and some additional functions.
Day 1: this code is a mess.
Day 2: this code is a mess.
Day 3: how does this code even compile.
Day 4: I no longer have faith in humanity.
Day 5: I found my first comment (Yay?).
Day 16: I'm done.
Day 19: I got paid.
If you're making a project in cpp just like that dev you do deserve a punch in the throat.
No documentation, no comments, no patterns, just some thick pasta of poorly written code, names like fCalcAllTaxFilesSizeMB....
This haunts me for real.2 -
If you work 8 hours a day sincerely, you will become a manager and work 12 hours a day
Made my day...hahahahah -
When I was 17 years old. I had difficulties in understanding math problem “Calculus” (I can’t remember which one was it). This one day when we were in a Computer Lab, our teacher was showing us how really software’s are made. During my time, it was vb6. I paid close attention. When I went home, I started to think things that I can make using that software so one day I went to my teacher and asked if I can have a copy of the vb6. He gave vb6 and told me that inside are few eBooks that will help in learning.
Fuck School, from that day I started to concentrate on programming only. Made a small calculator which will help me to understand a Calculus problem and double check my answer. From that day, I love programming.
I’ m 26 now and a full stack software developer. All I want to do it build cool shit, something that will blow the eyeball of my friends and that eyeball should pop out from their asshole.
Joke: The person who scored highest in the computer class was afraid to switch on the PC.1 -
This is the worst day in a while...
- The weather sucks
- I'm out of coffee
- I'm late for work
- I have a deadline very close... that was put there by my coworker who made promises to a client without my knowledge and without knowing the real state of the project...
The gif below explains pretty well how bad I feel today and how much it hurts.8 -
Dear diary, today was a good day.
1: i got the confirmation of promotion.
2: i solved a task using newly introduced tech and it works. Which has lots of implications on future work, a lot faster too. Also everyone is happy and supportive.
3: i felt good at the progress made with my kinesitherapy, my spine is starting to cooperate again.
Overall a good day.
Oh, and also i got payed :D1 -
I wrote a VBA script for a manufacturing plant. It made a quote, ran a nesting program, generated a dwg file, placed tool paths, created the work order and material part count, and finally out put to the cnc machine. It worked great it reduced a 10hr process to about 20min. So they cut my hours to less than 20 a week. I quit on "Bosses Day" to start my own company.2
-
The other month i went into work, excited to actually get something done. On top of that it was yearly bonus day. Quick check on adp to see the bonus and nothing there. Email my boss and ask whats up. Ten minutes later i am unemployed after two years because of a cultural fit. No warnings, nothing bd said about my work, made all the deadlines. Guess they didnt want to say budget cut. Haven't replaced me yet.6

TL:DR: I'm terminally addicted to Tea.
I have been drinking tea twice every day since 6th grade. I'm almost 30 years old now.
One day I decided to quit tea altogether. And at 6 PM that same day, I started to lose color from my eyes. The whole world turned black and white.
At about 7:30 PM, severe depression kicked in and I started questioning why the hell I wanna keep on living and not end it all.
At that point I ran to the kitchen and made tea and drank it. 2 mins after that I started to see colors again and the depression went away.
It's kind of funny now that I look back at it.19 -
TLDR: Ever wondered what your project's intro/theme song would be?!
Here's mine..
https://youtu.be/SH8wDkqA_50
Share yours if you ever thought about it or some particular song plays in your head while reading this..
Long(er) version + story: project I am currently working on is notorios in our company.. everyone avoids it, parts of code are untouched for 10+ years.. I used to think it was a 'shitty' project, many frameworks, many parts, many coding styles, many bugs... but longer I worked on it, more I came to realisation, it's not the code, it was the coders.. sloppy coders who didn't give a flying f..
Yes, some things are outdated still, and could be rewritten better (hopefully it will start happening soon! Yay!!), some were already rewamped, new things added... but for the time it was going live, it was majestic. I love solving bugs n problems so I must admit it has grown on me.. my little baby/devil..
Anyhu, one day on skype out of the blue I got this pic from my coworker.. made my day, laughed my ass off.. later that day I was debbuging something and youtube started rolling saw theme song (https://youtu.be/9fwWS6Xo1go)...
When I realised what I was listening too, it made perfect sense.. I was relaxed, at peace.. it clicked.. the song, the project, the bug, the code.. it all made chaotic sense..
I want to play a game..
I realised, project wasn't mean, it was just misunderstood and mistreated.. it can be your best friend if you play nice.
I replied to said coworker that I rhink I just found out my project's theme song and pasted the link.. he laughed, I laughed, my project laughed then it killed my test server.. It was a great day!! 🤣🤣🤣🤣
// all true except the project killing server part, that in fact happened on a different occasion
So.. you guys had any moments like this? Any theme songs, intros for your projects?? Or am I the only weirdo who makes associations like this all the time... 🤔🤣😇 ???6 -
The one that made me quit was when I was told I had to drive to the data centre and do a backup every day over the bank holiday weekend with no extra pay or time off. For no reason. And yes I know I'm an idiot for doing it but whatever.
The one that made me walk out, a month and a half later, was when I came in on Monday morning to discover that my boss had entirely rewritten the code I had spent literal months on in one weekend. Naturally he'd broken it and said it was an improvement.2 -
My colleague got fired. In my country, you need to work x weeks.
So they told him, his last day is start of June. Then they made an error in their official document... So his last day got prolonged with an other week... Then a different error in the new document.... An other week...
Now he got the news that his last day is prolonged with 2 weeks since he already had holidays planned before he got fired. He of course took his holidays thinking it would have 0 effect. They had the time to check this shit out.
He never got the news before that taking the holidays would again prolong his last day...
His last day was delayed 4 times...

My friend is a 1st time programmer. When we learned about tabs vs spaces in our mandatory beginners c++ class, the friend said "what, you can use spaces?" and I said "yes, of course, like this!" and demonstrated it. The friends reply, without knowing about the controversy, made my day:
*silence*
"well, thats dumb"3 -
Boss: Alright so after lunch can you show me all the changes you've made for project x?
Me: there haven't been any visible changes to it so it looks exactly the same as when I showed you at the end of the day yesterday. Just reorganised the code a bit.
Boss: Well, refresh my memory anyway.

There was a time, I couldn't find what made my webpage to appear blank. I stayed 3 more hours at the office to find the problem. Didn't find anything. The next day, I took a fresh look at my code, and guess what. A semicolon hidden in a JSON array.
Damn you semicolon ! I'll get you someday !3 -
Ordered $12 worth of electronic bits and bobs. They came a day ago and tonight I hooked them up to my raspberry pi. Made some lights blink, pressed some buttons. A solid re-introduction to electronics. This time on my own time and not in school, so I don't automatically hate it. I only got a cheap kit so I don't have many toys to play with but I'm excited to get more. Maybe even buy an Arduino. Maybe even make them talk to each other idk. I'm happy.8

today is one the worst day of 2018, after this
https://devrant.com/rants/1571445/...
I was looking through the websites which were made in the company last year, and while looking at a website I said: "this website is looking total shit, what the fuck is this".
Guess what, the guy who made the website was there and more worst he's my senior, I'm currently doing a project with him. He was not happy with this comment ( I thought the guy who made this left the company ). I totally fucked up.
Now I will search for another job. I can't bear this.4 -

A few days ago I had an interview, they asked me if I knew Angular. I told them I never used it, and they told me to give it a go anyway. I made what they asked me to do in 8 hours and submitted it for review. Today they called and said they liked it, and asked me to go there tomorrow to talk terms.
Well, tomorrow could be my first day as an Angular developer!3 -
First comment by the architects that were reviewing my test, as part of the selection process:
"Well the code was very well documented, not something we see much of..."
Made my day :) -
I watched this video today about the new Xbox adaptive controllers. I had heard about it before, but never knew how capable or functional it actually was.
And watching that video made me realise exactly how much the tech we build , and support helps many people live the lives they wanted.
All the rants about languages , editors , frameworks aside , things like this were built with an idea and an inclusive intension to help. And that's exactly what we all are here for :)
do check the video out it made my day and I'm sure it will make yours too ..

Ok now let's get our pitchforks back and go hunt some vim users down.

Agreed on an offer from company X... Told them I'd sign the contract on my first working day, still a week away.
The offer had a lower salary than my previous job, I needed to relocate, and travel costs were not covered. It was a step back for me but I really needed a new job.
After the weekend I got an invitation for another interview... All went well and the perks were better than the offer made by company X.
Next day I had the second interview and they were very excited and offered me a contract.
Contract came in on friday, signed it and called company X that I'd like to reject the position after reconsidering my options...
Boy were they pissed off 😂 -

Yesterday was an extremely stressful day. Several things went wrong, clients were already preparing for the weekend, a horrible headache was building up during the day, all in all: a day, where you'd better have stayed in bed. Finally home, I approached my mailbox, put the key in, opened it, expecting bills or similar things to... *cough* sweeten *cough*... my weekend, but instead found a letter from devRant.
Guys, I gotta tell you, this really made my entire day (if not my entire weekend). I know it's silly, because we're basically talking about a letter and some stickers, but it's the small things one should appreciate, as they can brighten the worst days.
Thanks @dfox and @trogus for building such a great platform, that allows fellow developers to vent about *certain* things from time to time. Keep up the good work!2 -

Every day, between about 1pm and 4pm, they Destroyer of Eyeballs hangs in the sky above my monitor, before it finally gets blocked out by another tower block
I now time-track 3hrs less each day - eventually someone will realise that buying blinds is cheaper than paying me to not work 15hrs/week8 -
Finally I've got my stickers, thank you guys!!! Made my day *.*
(I told my classmates to join... ;) )3 -
My first project was made with scratch (Java based drag-drop language for kids to learn) when I was like 10
I wanted to make something like mine craft but in 2D.
Its a huge plane of stone and you have to break some of them to find diamonds.
I didn't know lists or array exist. I made one variable for every freakin' stone and it took me a solid day back then.
Also if you break a stone, the background changes and it might happen that a diamond appears at a while you made 10 weeks earlier.

Got an [IMPORTANT] email today from <some third party company> saying they discovered a problem with their software and were working on it with high prority. Problem description made my day: "<some third party company> would like to inform you that offline users using iPad may not be able to synch due to technical reasons". - wait what?!1

I just made my own implementation of a scraper for NASA's Pic of the Day. It should have automagically changed my wallpaper at 4 AM to the new pic of the day.
Today's "pic of the day" is a video. It broke my shit.... So much for the excitement of seeing my automation work.4 -
LMAO. Had a tough day and finally heading home with most likely the last bus for today.
But his comment made my day. 😆
// I genuinely found it so funny hence shared in joke 😬4 -
So I was told why a bash with Git isn't allowed in my company.
The people that built the development kit (IDEs, tools, etc) estimated that Git wasn't necessary since integrated in Visual Studio.
They clearly never tried to do a pull request or a rebase then. Good to know.
(a coworker gave me a way to have a bash anyway, so that made my day \o/ but rant needed anyway) -
That moment you solved something without Stack overflow and/or the official Docs... That realisation made my day ☺
Feeling more and more like a medior! (I am a junior) I might even program in my spare time again! It has been a while... I can't wait 😍😍3 -
After a long day of wrestling with some bad code and getting it to 'work' leaves me feeling dev angst. Then on my way home I see some minor bug in a phone app I'm using and I think to myself, "MY GOD.. all software is made out of SUFFERING."
Behind every tiny defect out there lays some poor soul's looong hours of overtime, stress, tears, alcoholism, and stale popcorn dinners. -
I think i made a costly fuckup!
Last month i was called into the cabin of main boss and i believe he reviewed my work and gave me a slight increment in salary.
Only today that i noticed about missing increment in my last month's salary i received last week.
Only thing I'm sure is that i remember feeling happy that day and telling about my increment to my coworkers. They don't remember about it now.
I have no proof if i actually received increment or if i am just hallucinating..
What to do? 😕9 -
Dam wandows... My system is up to date almost all the time as I install those forced updates before they are actually forced, just so I can be in control of saving things and not losing anything valuable during a forced restart. I've updated literally last evening and made sure the day is done only after all the updates have been made. Today I was working on a personal project and made an hour break for lunch and some rest. My computer went to sleep as it usually does when I leave it for 10 minutes or so... Or so I thought. After my break I sat behind the damn computer to get back to work only to realize that I woke it up to wrong system (windows is secondary as I only use it for this single project that needs to be done in .net and UWP) and there's no work to get back to. It just made an update without even letting me know there is one to be made.
I swear, if the person who made this design choice have paid only 1% of all the lost works' worth, they would smash the thing on day one and went bankrupt in first 2hrs of that 'feature' living it's life. And people wonder I daily drive *NIX based system...5 -
After a 70 day streak on github, I forgot to commit my daily work and went to a party.
I came back drunk as fuck and thought I lost my steak.
Today I woke up and found that I made a commit and deployed into production, but the message was "Removed funny code"...2 -
Just had my last day at my current job last week. I got this amazing virtual card with 20-30 people telling me how amazing I was and how large of a difference I made. I’m not someone that seeks or needs validation, but to see those comments in writing really made me feel good and like I made a huge difference.4

Yesterday was the first day of my final exams. (They are scheduled this whole week) First exam was programming on paper and it went surprisingly good. I'm pretty sure i made one or two minor mistakes but overall it should work. (3 tasks: program a calculator; program a car-showcase program and explain quicksort) We had 3 hours to do this and even though i needed them i didn't feel any pressure. That was really nice. Thank you for calming me down the last days/weeks and ensuring me that i can do this.
I hope today's going as smooth. Exam of the day is networks. Wish me luck^^8 -
i got my account perma-locked on twitter over a joke the other day and the only presented option was to delete my account. Apparently you talk about cool shit all day and 2 people see it, but you make a joke about a bad neighborhood and 700 people flag literally every tweet and reply you've ever made.13

The worst feeling is when you are really proud of your work, you managed to realize your vision in a perfect way and you're really happy about the result, so much that you are presenting it to the client with pure joy, but the client doesn't appreciate it, doesn't understand your vision and consider it worse than the previous version.
It's incredible how easy It is to move from happines to sadness and depression in a few seconds.
My work had made my day, but the client ruined it.

"This ethernet cable doesn't work because you made it too fast". ffs I had to fight for my grade that day.
-
My last day at my current company and damn, I couldn‘t be happier. Consulting was the worst decision I ever made and from tomorrow on I‘ll be free.
No more lying to clients, no more pushing of horrible products, no more silence towards problems because they didn‘t pay for a more expensive service.
I can finally stop hating myself for my job!3 -
One week into my new job as a junior mobile developer I receive my stickers from devrant (for posts I made while still a project manager and self-studying to get where I am now) - on the same day I did my first 12hr workday to complete work for my first sprint.1
-
Today, I made someones day in 5 minutes by using my phone camera, a picture to pdf converter, and a wireless capable printer to take a sheet of music in a small book, supersize it, and print it so they could read it without squinting.
Sometimes I forget how awesome it is to have this technology on demand, and it takes someone who doesn't have it to realize just how cool it is.3 -
Most of the times I really hate typos, coz they seem like carelessness, lack of preciseness. But this delightful method name just made my day:
ReceiveBackendMassage -
When I came home just now after a long day and opened my mailbox, I was instantly made a little bit happier than before.
Thank you @dfox and @trogus for creating this opportunity for devs to rant about little and big incidents and to seek advice and amusement. (And for the stickers, of course. :D)
Thank you all for being the awesome community you are.
(Two of the stickers were immediately stuck to one of my boxes and fit in quite well.
Edit: Also: sorry for potato, it's evening in Germany.)13 -
my first day with Linux.
1. downloaded the Ubuntu 16. 04 LTS and made bootable.
2. install it on my system.

4. searched on internet with my phone and connected my PC with USB thetering.
5. now installed wifi driver.
6. now my Nvidia card is not working installed its driver too.
6.finally i look at my desktop and its looking really ancient and old.
7. installed gnome desktop and switch to it.
8. now gnome is not much functional so added some extensions like dash to dock, dynamic transparency.
9. now setup java and android studio.
10. after that android studio font is looking blurry. finally stackoverflow made my life easy and i fixed it.

really happy.. 😍 😍7 -
Today was a good day, (day 4 of my junior dev career) I met the only other female Dev in the company , great stuff
And I'm starting to see how well I fit into the company. The only hot drinks options are coffee and green tea- exactly the only hot things I drink 😂(I think they all hacked me and made the work exactly the way I'd like it hm)3 -
I've been creating a game in Unity and I made sure to tell all my friends, but now every other day when I see them they ask me if they can play it. It gets a bit old, I try to explain this is a very long-term project and there's nothing to play until it's almost complete. Only a few of them get the memo.11

If I were cooking like I maintain my dev projects, I'd have a roast in the fridge, a frittata thats only missing the eggs, eight different pots of uncooked soup around the kitchen and the ingredients for a pudding in the cupboard. I made a friend this week through work
She's called Miriam
I know we're friends because we talk every day
5 times a day
Because she keeps calling
Every time she asks for my CEO, I tell her he won't be in until after Christmas but sure enough she calls back an hour and a half later, asking for the same person
But the weirdest part is she's calling from a legitimate, large company. It's not a cold call. So, why?
If anyone works at Proventa, tell Miriam to stop.
Please?5 -
I kinda started programming back in the day, by breaking 2 school servers using a simple batch "virus"... it effectively opened tons of porn videos, threw the mouse cursor to the top right corner of the screen and shut down the PC after 15 seconds.
I masked the file and made sure it looked like internet explorer (since my school, back in the day, didn't use chrome and didn't allow the installation of chrome)
It was meant to troll my friend but all computers shared files with each other which meant even the private PC's of my teachers got my "virus"
Eventually it landed in the startup folder and messed everything up. I got snitched out, and I had to fix it
(I literally just wrote another batch file to delete my so called virus... because of the 15 seconds time limit I had)1 -
A few years back, I was a newly hired developer visiting the corporate HQ in NYC. We went to lunch, where the execs ordered a round of drinks.
I commented that drinking during the work day was an odd practice in my experience. The CEO jokingly explained how it made going home to his wife at the end of the day easier (or something to that effect). “You know what I mean?”
To which I reply (with no hint of irony): “No… My life loves me.”
😎9 -
The other day I went back to my college representing the company that I work for interviews of Freshers. Since I was taking interviews of my immediate juniors, I knew that every candidate’s major is Computers Applications, and we had sent out a JD ‘specifically’ mentioning that we need Devs, so tech people only.
We interviewed 40 people for first round in total out of which 12 were shortlisted for second round (we made them write some code).
Out of 12, 8 straight up refused to write the code saying they weren’t interested in coding at all (even professionally). Made me boil up so much, someone else, much more deserving and willing could have been in their place and may even have the job. But us humans are always cunts.2 -
You know how my 'about' here says I create features from bugs?!? Well if you didn't before, now you do.. :P
Anyhow, today the most bizzare thing happened.. Customer played 'reverse uno card' on me..
Meaning?!
They reported a feature missing on uat env, when in fact I fixed a bug they have on prod..
Not sure how I should feel about this, but it sure made my day! (: I just hope they will not open a bug report for this missing bug..4 -
My worst collab/group project experience definitely has to be my final semester project during my undergrad.
We were a team of 4 including myself and would meet every day to work and every day:
1. My teammates would show up late
2. One of my teammates’ girlfriend lived in my apartment and shed just show up every day and waste our time and make him never contribute (He LITERALLY never did any work and got by with no effort)
3. The other 2 on the team didn’t know anything and never made efforts to learn
I literally did the entire project on my own (Code the full project, make presentations for all the reviews, and teach the other 3 every step of the way).
TLDR: I topped my batch and got 199/200 whereas everyone else were 190 or below, and I went on to publish that project in a Science Journal (Again, with no efforts from the team)1 -
Someone made a comment at work about my chances of being today at work since I have a tendency to ngaf about Tuesdays.
Currently I am at the car dealership getting my car serviced.
It offends me greatly that they would say such shit.
I mean, sure, I am about to go buy beer and food and call it a day afterwards. But still, hurtful.
I feel like steak today.9 -
Not dev but I need to get it off my chest, first day back from holiday and I'm already stressed.
Today my company's travel agency made a mistake in my first name when booking me a flight. Once I received the itinerary and noticed the mistake I sent an email telling them and politely asking to have it fixed. They said they'd sort it out urgently.
~4 hours later
They changed my *last name* and now both first and last names are spelled incorrectly..
Seriously, how incompetent does one have to be to mess the very thing they were told to double check. -
One of the biggest challenges for me learning to program is my memory.
Some people can pick up concepts easily and have a field day. I have to keep practicing until I memorize it properly, and even then I have the tendency to struggle.
Does this mean I give up? Helllll no. I'm far from giving up with all the progress I've made.4 -

I got really awesome wireless headphones as a prize at a hackathon.
Was actually feeling down today, then this arrived and made my day!
It made my day and inspired me to do something today(started a personal project!) -
Multiple all-nighters (all day every day):
1) Working, studying and developing an Android game as pet project. Last few weeks before release (yup, I've set a deadline for a pet project) my day consisted of uni, work, more work and 4-5h sleep.
2) Having worked on my thesis (Development of a CPU/SoC + Firmware + Linux kernel) and actual paid work. In parallel. Because, you know, I need to eat and pay rent and shit while I'm writing the thesis. And debts at that moment were not an option (still made some). All-day all-night all-week. After submitting the thesis I went to the doc and enjoyed 2 weeks of doing nothing.
3) Sometimes on my main open-source project after regular work hours. If I have the motivation and ideas that I want to check out or prove it gets late/early too fast. -
I finish sentences with semicolons.
I type 'exit' in whatsapp conversations when I'm done sending messages.
I tried to :wq from Google docs the other day.
And most importantly of all, coding got me into tech in general, made me switch to Linux, start a thousand personal projects at a time and is now the thing I dedicate most of my time to, both in and out of work. -
Fellow devranter detected?
I can hardly count how many times I've used profanities for variable names or placeholder text. But, unlike this landing page for the Norwegian company 1881's API they never see the light of day. At least I hope so...
Made my giggle out loud at least, 1881 is a well known and respectable (I guess) company over here. Hello world! :-D5 -

However pathetic it may sound, I haven't. I've made good acquaitances, yes. But friends...
Last I had friends was in my first uni years. Long, long ago. After that - they went on their path and I - on mine. Work, family, personal projects and sometimes moto rides - that's my life now. Not really much time for friends. Not really much time to make any. Not enough time in a day to think/worry about it, not to mention reconsider my priorities/choices.5 -
Judo.
I might sound like one of those wierdos that are overly into Japan, Martial Arts and such, but I really enjoy Judo.
It is a sport where you have to FEEL the contact with your opponent.
Practising Judo made my day-to-day stress go away in just about 20m and also kept me in good shape, made me meet a lot of people/friends, lead me to live in a certain way and interact with people in a certain way (a good way, actually).
It also taught me which parts of the body are the most dangerous/fragile and cause the most pain.6 -
My first day of my internship. I was confident in my abilities to develop, but wow. I was totally put in place after the first day. I realized that I didn't know as much as I thought. Almost wanted to change career paths. I'm thankful for that day because it really made me push on and become a better person and programmer!

Get message from recruiter on LinkedIn around 10 last night "Are you available immediately? I need a Java dev urgently based in [my city]. Please to [email address]"
I reply, send email, accept connect request
See the post they made about position , literally says "Apply today, interview tomorrow, start Monday"
I could really do with this. Made sure to be up and about by 9 in case phone rings/to reply promptly
Hear nothing back. Check in around mid day "Yes, I got your CV. My emails have been flooded. Will get to it asap" Well, that was yesterday, still nada
Linked post is about other challenges in my job hunt with a different recruiter2 -

When you have to made a little game with javascript, and because it's your first game you made a beautiful maze with lot of wall.
Ahahah... i'm shit.
I forgot wall have collision.
I'm here now, with 40 different fuckin' walls and much if and else if conditions.
I hate me.
Yeah i know, I can just change my maze but no... I'm lazy. Cry against the collisions is better.
Have good day.9 -
Joing a company was the biggest mistake i ever made!
Wondering what was wrong with my career as a free lance android dev that i decided to accept the project ???
All those beautiful days coding all day long without any stress or deadline now gone!
GONE !!!2 -
The day we had to have an app ready for an upcoming demo. Management said everything needed to be done by the end of the day. My change was done, but was dependant on another change being merged first. I had been in the office since 8am. It didnt get merged until 5pm. I was in the office until 8pm trying to fix the insane merge conflicts. In the end i gave up and went home. The next day we discovered that the "deadline" was made up anyway so we still had time. I wanted to flip every single table in that office.1

Spending all day sitting in a chair takes its toll on my back. Lumbar and intra-scapular areas are ssssoooooo sore that I can't even stretch them out properly any more (I'm quite a flexible person).
Thanks to my closest shopping centre for this double foam-ball. It's the best investment I've made in years and it only cost me 4€.
Whenever I lay and roll on it slowly I usually drift into sleep out of pleasure.
It's not an ad or anything, just a recommendation to my fellow IT guys and gals suffering back pains from sitting all day long.7 -
I was at a car boot sale (mix between a flea market and yard sale for the Americans out there) the stall next to me was selling a PC tower, monitor, keyboard and mouse for £10. So all day I was trying to sell my old toys (I was 9 at the time) but only made £5.
At the end of the day I went to the stall and asked if he would take £5 for it, he then game me it for free as he saw me trying to sell my toys all day.1 -

when I was 17 (13 years ago) I was doing my A-Levels in computers and we had to build a booking system using excel. that's when I discovered VBA, I learnt a lot and it made the project so much easier to do and with that I wrote my first calendar which was 365 lines of code. one line for each day of the year. it wasn't until I completed the project and going over some of the code it hit me, I turned 365 lines into 4! I was so pleased with myself. one of my best moments of programming.

What is it with this bullshit culture about installing something syncs it with all machines
First chrome/chromium, You can't install a plugin or extension on 1 machine unless you're logged out. what is this bullshit
Next windows 10, I fucking installed a Japanese language pack on 1 machine, by the end of the day all my fucking machines and even my windows tablet got it installed and applied in a fucking bugged way that made it that my UI is English and my fucking metro apps are Japanese.
This is starting to get annoying as fuck5 -

I just completed my college degree in may of this year and started working in a small company of <50 employees. I'm made to sit idle all day because I'm a junior and also because they dont have much shit going on.
I approached my head a few days back to discuss the same and he says that it's my responsibility to ask my senior devs to keep me busy and assign me work.
Now do I really have to suck my seniors dick everyday to make him assign me something?
Plus this asshole made the head believe that I'm not competent enough and that's the reason they're soft ignoring me, whereas I always did everything up-to his standards and then he even sometimes appreciated me for that.
Now the real question, if I leave this company and they give me a bad review, will it have a considerable impact on my future? I'm confused as fuck. 😐
TL;DR: Newly joined fresher, made to sit idle in the company, company guys somehow make it seem it's my fault for being idle, may give me a bad review when I leave, will it make me look bad?3 -

So, yesterday I made a post asking for a recommendation on what to give my boyfriend for Valentine’s Day (He is a programmer and starting to learn how to develop video games) I gave him a Wacom, two online courses for Unity in Udemy, and, a portable coffee maker (since he previously complaint about the coffee in his office) What do you guys think? 😎4

I wish I had that self esteem a lot of my classmates posses.
I'm working for my prof, I've kinda made my very first step into the industry. Somewhere deep inside I know I'm talented and smart. However, every day I am worried that I'm not good enough and it will be noticed at the job soon.
Is that common thing in Dev community? Just want to know opinions7 -
I shouldn't drink coffee but

The day I read The Simulation Argument, by Nick Bostrom, a thought popped into my mind: "if we are made of code, maybe there are ways to hack life as you would hack some random program", I started thinking privilege escalation over the simulation, buffer overflow, picking signals as if I was eavesdropping... it was an epiphany and also fun10
-
So for Father's Day I bought my dad premium coffee (Single Origin, Now Bottle Voyager pack). Very expensive even compared to Starbucks...
We brewed a few but they taste like crap. I thought he was doing it wrong. So today I dropped by the store and brought myself a cup that they made to see how the pros do it...
Well this is what I got for $5... And it also tastes like crap...
So now my question is do we actually like drinking coffee or non-carbonated sugar water that we call coffee?42 -

So, second day at work...
I was up at 5:45. Made it here by 7:35, and will probably be leaving at 17:00.
I honestly hate my job (and I've only been here for 2 days), I hate, absolutely HATE having to spend one and a half to two hours in my car each day.
It feels like I've been job hunting for the past 9 months - one of the reasons for leaving was to fight through traffic each day... and I still somehow seemed to have drawn the short straw.
I am slowly but surely losing my passion for being a developer. Something I thought would never happen. I love what I do - or so I thought. But at the moment...9 -
Today ... Like other day i wake up. And go satisfy all the need of my client in the chat .. and remove what i made and unmade and made and unmade and made and change color and more at left and more at top add padding bottom and unmade and made and save and clear cache and unmade and clear cache and made and change color.

Tecnically not my very first experience, but in primary school I had to solve a math problem for my homework and an error in the book made it so that you couldn't solve it by hand (I think the solution was in the order of magnitude of 10^20). My calculator wasn't of much help either so I asked my dad to help me use basic to solve the problem. The next day I came in with a 2 page print out: 6 lines of code and the rest was the solution. The teacher didn't understand what it was.

So I was messing around in unity, as you do. And I made an explosion mechanic platformer. The scripts were all working well. I saved it for the day.
The next day I booted unity and my scripts were gone, and the scene switcher won't work.
So I mean, partly my fault. Partly google drive's fault and partly unity's fault.6 -

My first exposure to computers?
My father had bought this new machine (windows 98 "new" of course) and we put it in a very moist place (some kind of halfway balcony) in our old flat.
...which was pretty stupid.
One day it made a loud nois, started smoking and stopped responding.
I loved the animated paperclip though! -
In 2014 I made a promise to myself that I will never work again in webforms again. Next day I put a resignation notice to my boss and said : "I have dignity". That was my last day when I looked at aspx file. Fast forward to 2024. I break my promise everyday for the last half a year. I can't quite because I don't see any job offers paying that handsomely as 3-4 years ago and I fear that now it may be difficult to find any work at all... I am imprisoned again in VIEWSTATE :(3

So for the past day I've been obsessed with adding compression into my build pipeline for web dev, I've implemented html minify, babel JS minify, gzip and made the server specify content length to prevent chunking and shave off a few unused bytes. Is there anything else anyone can think of to get even more gains? Sofar my project went from 1.33mb to 180kb transferred. It's a huge win, just wondering if I can push it further somehow?1

Damn, since my last rant where I was complaining about me having big troubles coding stuff when asked by an exercise or given instructions, I feel like I've made huge progress now, by sticking a bit to my "at least 5 exercises a day" routine, now as soon as I code, it comes to me more and more naturally.
I'm so glad I can see the practice really paying off, even thanks to a simple function working great at the first compile makes me feel warm inside even tho it ain't gonna last long.2 -

This made my debugging day a bit more tolerable. Hope it will have similar effect on yours :) -
Pushed out a big update that included restructuring every directory. No one had access to the admin section. Yeah needless to say my boss was not happy since no one could do any work. Turned out during the process I made every admin page need the highest level of authorization which only the owner has. Easy fix but stressful day for sure

I'm stuck.
Quitting smoking/scrolling/youtube/other unhealthy coping mechanisms, taking my prescriptions and exercising every day made my mind free — now it's unobstructed, clear and not hindered in any way.
The problem is, without constant coping, my memory turned into a minefield. I can't think freely, as I constantly stumble upon trauma after trauma that make my heart physically hurt.
With clear mind, I now clearly see what used to lurk in shadows, and I'm terrified of it. I won't go back to smoking and watching youtube ten hours a day.
What should I do?12 -
I was having a really bad day today until I saw PHP PornHub Programmers on my commute home Really made my day. Credits Reddit2

So past week our Web Design teacher proposed a little HTML5 project for the class to make. I have been since that day until today trying to implement an OBLIGATORY drag and drop functionality to reorder a list and back it up to localStorage, but for some reason it wont work as it should. But what a surprise, today I arrive at class and he has changed the specifications of the project, allowing us to not implement that, or implement it differently. That singlehandledly made my day.2

Today was a shitty day. i made a mistake and lost my work (3days of work gone) had to do it from scratch managed to recover some parts tho. FML1

The joys of returning from my annual leave..
My contributions after just being back from a 7-day leave.. 27 in total.. PR's, issues, bug fixes, feature fixes, requested features,..
Feels good tho.. It was a productive day today and we made the weekly update! :D
( Yes, I pushed commits while on vacation :D )2 -
My last day at work today. I have been in this company for 4 months only. A lot of promises were made during the interview and when I was in, it was jack shit.3

Recently had an issue with a staff person wanting me to deploy on a Saturday! They were so adamant about out that they began to escalate it to the president. I put my foot down knowing that I had the upper hand in this situation. They ultimately caved but for a brief moment I was like f#*k this $h!#. They can fire me for all I care. Then my friend sends me this: https://teespring.com/deploy/... made my day!3

So, not really a rant. The opposite in fact. With all this frustration about GDPR lately, GUESS WHAT FUCKING HAPPENED?! My domains (at one registrar so far) where all made private because of the law. GOOD DAY!2
-
Just made my second C++ program. Im so proud of it but one thing kept killing me inside...
The fact that I spent the entire day Sunday debugging it and only getting in a couple lines of code...4 -
Lost one day mounting my CNC.
Still on the basics...
Found out that I baddly welded the two fucking easy drivers and made a bad connection I can't undo now.
So the drivers are always on and stepping :(

Most successful project? - well its hard to define success?
Get paid a wage in my day-job to work on other peoples software that I know are still being used but it doesn't matter since I got paid - success!
Made a web-app for a gaming community that gets about 150 users each day. Well I don't get paid but I do use the app myself and I learned while making it - more successful?
Forked some gaming community web app that did not support the latest game updates. Updated it and hosted on github pages. It gets about 1k users per day. Quite popular but since someone else wrote most of the code I feel it shouldn't count?
Maybe one day I will make something that people use and it also makes money for me somehow.. but I hate advertising and I rarely pay for apps/software so I'm not sure if its possible? -
It's been 3 days since I started my dev job and it's been pretty stressful. I could have posted at least 3, maybe 4 rants each day. Mainly about trivial bullshit that I let get to me.
Lets just say it came to a head today and that's when one of my bosses, who doesn't even really need to know who I am, decided to help me out. No reason why, just being kind.
I get home to find my other half had been making my lunch for me for tomorrow and had made dinner for me as a surprise. Didn't ask her to do it, she just did it out of the kindness of her heart.
It just made me realise that I'm actually surrounded by great people who I value a lot and appreciate more and more each day. -
Chat Journal. A chat-based journal application.
An android app I built past month using flutter and flask for the server.
I started with flutter around 2 months ago. I believe it's the way mobile development is supposed to be. It's a treat for every mobile developer out there.
I used flask to build the server, database and even made my own analytics engine. Made an awaful lot of mistakes at the beginning but I think I'm improving at this day by day.
This probably is my biggest and definitely the coolest project so far. There's some saying
"If you have completed building 90% of something, there's 90% more to be built". It's called the 180% rule (or something similar) which literally signifies the difference between building something and building something well enough to be able to publish on the playstore. And this project taught me that.2 -
My AP Computer Science teacher changed my life in 2001. Until then, I wasn’t considering a career in development. He challenged me to write a back propagating multi layer perceptron neural network, and an RPN calculator. Every day made me think about how to solve problems at an algorithmic level. He was brutally honest, and one of the reasons why I’m an team manager now. RIP, your legacy won’t be forgotten.5

spent all day finishing up a feature that i did not want to do at all and think its not the time for it...
after 5 hours of coding & debugging i finally made the PR, took the rest of the day off, felt happy i got rid of that task along with the nagging of the PM. life was good.
At 8 PM, some test i never heard of failed, my branch was the issue and it got reverted and now ill have to work on it again on Monday to fix it. fuck my life. -
I made a website for my college. The day on which I had to demonstrate it was fun. A student teaching and solving doubts of teachers! 😀😎

! Rant
For those who saw my rant the other day, here are my self taught android apps I made to get my foot in on Android Studio and Unity development. Critique, enjoy, provide feedback, ignore, or anything.

Spent whole day on fetching a random string from a webpage using jsoup only to realise next day morning the actual front page gives a random text automatically. Made all my yesterday's code obsolete.

pull request that made my day - a colleague of mine wants to make the open world subject to some master. of course I rejected this attempt ;)4

today is such a good day I'm literally paranoid that something is about to go wrong
and this will maintain for like 4-5 days because my roommate left and the weather is amazing, both cool and sunny
nothing is blowing up, my health is maintaining, I just hauled 5 kg of potatoes several miles and it made me feel great, then accidentally made too much food but easily ate all of it. hell yeah
my plants are thriving, I already collected seeds for next year, and new flowers are budding and such
and I keep redesigning and making headway in my evil villain plan
and investments are doing nicely
and I have everything scheduled and done for the next half-month
about the only thing that isn't done is laundry. it's actually bugging me but who does laundry before a heatwave instead of at the end of one
am I gonna fixate on this now just to ruin my mood
hope not, fuck2 -
Today we got our Sentry integration (exception aggregator with a lot of nice features) working just to see a user using IE5 on a Windows 2000 machine causing exceptions. It made my team’s day.1

A friend of mine was speaking about a company that developed mostly just web apps with Ruby and that had a solid team. After I arrived home, I checked their site and not even two hours had past and I received an e-mail from their HR wanting to set an interview. After some days I went to the interview, which went really good because the week wasn't even over and they made an offer! Two weeks after I had my first day.
And that kids was how I've got my job 😁2 -
Everyone who has ever hit ++ on any of my pointless rambling I would like to thank you 🙏 this made my day2

Today was a good day:
- made good steps forward with one of my personal projects, learning a few things along the way
- squashed a bunch of bugs
- almost finished some heavy reorg of the git repo for another project
- killed like 4 mosquitoes (those things are annoying af!)
Today was a good day! -
Thank god my 1 day works got saved, I made new folders and transfered few files in those folders,
And then when I got done I deleted it from the side bar view in sublime text. Later on I saw one of new folder and nothinf was there my heart went down, then I thought.
Wait I right clicked it and deleted it. Then quickly rushing my clicks towards recycle bin.
and my breath came back it was there :D -
I wonder if I should add to my bachelor thesis' implementation report that I had trouble setting up my SQL init script and lost around a day because I made a typo in a table-name and therefore my foreign key kept fsiling for unknown reasons 😂

btw I made an instagram account dedicated for my tangram designs ( I do a new one each day for the gf to guess ( w/o the weekends 4 her ) and tought I might as well share them with the not so big world ).
Almost all of them are made by me ( I do copy some from the net if I got lazy or forget to make a new one ( I do them the previous day ) ) so hopefully some of them are not on the net already
If you are interested to check it out : your_daily_dose_of_tangram ( and yeah, I know... but we all do it to some extend either way ;) )1 -
When I first, at school, set up a program to check how many devices there were on the network using nmap. Then I graphed it over a day and it made me feel real awesome checking out a network and getting info on it, however primitive my methods were

It's the 5th day of my holiday, circa 10.20 AM. So far I've spent around 30h programming, and learned React (already having experience with the other 2 major ME*N stacks I decided it was time to give it a go), made a small 2D platformer with Unity and realised I really like writing unit tests. Maybe next I refactor the app I just made to use GraphQL and TypeScript next, since I'm in the mood of trying something new.
Funny how my significant other thought being on holiday actually would mean a break from programming - no, it means more time to spend learning and trying things you don't have the time or energy to after a working day of Vue/C#!
(To clarify, I would not spend this much time programming on my holiday, if my better half wasn't away from home for this week - won't probably spend nearly as much time on it for the remaining 4 weeks...)2 -
As a techie how loves the climate, I feel like I am living two life's. On one hand, I want to protect my earth, but than I make a app, and Evan though I buy offsets, what about all of the users. Why was I born this way, and can the natural and the man-made coexist? That is the question I must ask myself all day. I am looking to drone powered climate research in a effort to prove to my self they benefit each other, but I just can't. I fucking hate my life rn2

I had a group project due for a object oriented programming class. I noticed my partner hadn't made any commits to our git so I asked if he had anything made. Turns out he was partying all weekend and didnt commit anything until the last day. We failed that project... At least I passed the class and he didn't. Moral of the story is, don't choose a partner at random

"Longest you worked without rest + why?" (2)
Oh, I am an idiot 🙂! 7 hours isn't nearly the longest I've worked without rest (see my previous rant.) I just remembered working non-stop almost for a day in the past.
It was for an annual 48-hour hackathon where people gathered to make games.
It made me promise myself not to work excessively long hours non-stop. My creativity level was way below the ground, and during the after-party, my body sort of kernel-panicked, and I started to become incoherent. I had to call a taxi to find my way home that day.
For the following years, I made sure to get some rest (e.g., go home at night to sleep, spend the lunch break time actually having 'lunch break' and not coding while you're at it, etc.) because I did not want to wreck myself any further. -
good guy pexel allows me to insert free random kitten pictures as an easter egg, retrieving all by a tidy api. made my day.

Taking a leave for 14 days from work, just to use my vacation days, really messes with my biorhythm :D My day/night cycle shifted about 12 hours.. Programming during the night for a freelance project, sleeping 1-2 hours during the day just to rest my eyes a bit..
I'm from Belgium, but the second developer, on the project, is from San Francisco.. It's quiet nice to have someone to talk to about the development process when every one else I know is asleep.
I'm not made for a dayjob at a desk, I need to be at home, in my bed or at my own desk, choosing my own hours, just.. Working on projects with some music, some snacks,.. Much more productive that way than, instead, being forced to work from 9am to 6pm.. You can't force creativity or inspiration
.
I slept 9 hours this week, spread over 4 days... I'm not the most healthy person, I know :D1 -
That’s my first hackathon, We where working for 1 full day from 4PM to 6PM next day without having any sleep to give a killer product on integration of multiple applications into one single point (Hard Work)
One team just came chill in the Hackathon went out sleep and made a killer presentation on how to integrate Slack with multiple applications like Jenkins, GutHub and much more to make life simple (Smart Work)
Actually we both lose but their way was implemented in organisation 😝1 -
Anyone using a paid font in their code editors? I have been using the regular old Fira Code on my workbenches, but lately I've kinda opened up to the idea of actually buying a font because I would use it almost every day. If you did, what made you do it?7

Years ago I made a meme about eating dogs.
My detractors have continued to hound me to this very day. -
I just like bulding silly things, my ideal devjob would be one where I could just make random junk that makes me smile all day...
Like recently I made an NoSQL database using azure AD. They give you 50000 AD objects free, but I found you could encode all sorts of data in the AD objects variables. So basically I setup a framework that uses Security groups as Collections, AD objects as Documents, and object variables as key pairs.
It's really slow, like roughly 50 queries a minute, but hey. It was fun proving it could be done...
Yeah, that would be my ideal devjob :P that kind of stuff all day2 -
During my computer science degree I met the most brilliant, hilarious guys that I now call my best friends and still hang out with to this day.
I've taken a few other degrees and never made friends that were as good as the ones I made in my cosc degree. By far the best years I had in school were the ones spent hanging out with those guys.
The cosc program was the best place to meet good friends because the majority of us are fairly similar. We'd all rather hang out and game with friends and a few drinks then go pub crawling.
Computer science people are my people. -
Paid brain.js for some time already because it is so awesome that I feel bad not to.
Then this is a random day that I want to know more about the back story of it, turns out the original author @harthur had such a bad experience on the open source world.
Double-downing on this is that she singlehandedly made 3 of my most favourite packages which is too cute to forget since Node.js has came about.
My gawd, what have people done?1 -
Made commit changes on a Friday afternoon. Coworker makes changes over labor day weekend and things aren't in place. I'm just annoyed by the need to chase these bugs down, not so much my coworker. Fuckin hell.

One day, a friend introduced me to Python, calling it a "friendly programming language for beginners." I remember spending my first few hours writing simple scripts, and though it was challenging, I was hooked. For the first time, I could see the immediate result of my efforts, and it felt incredibly empowering. At 23, I made a bold decision. I started teaching myself programming in earnest while still juggling my other responsibilities. I took online courses, read books, and spent hours practicing. I made countless mistakes and encountered errors that felt insurmountable, but I learned to see them as puzzles to solve. By the time I turned 24, I landed my first job as a junior developer. It wasn’t an easy journey, but it was one of the most rewarding experiences of my life. Programming taught me not only technical skills but also how to think critically and approach problems methodically.4

Fastcsv is my knight in shining armour. After reliving the horrors of handling utf-8 csv files with the built in library of Python 2.7 it made my day to see everything work.1

Had three jira tickets assigned to me, two fundamentally opposed each other, the third aimed to address contradictions in the first two. None of them actually had any description so after a day of trying to find out what needs to be done I've made little progress but a lot of sitting quietly with my head in my hands.
Now I'm getting emails from my manager on why they haven't been closed yet. -
I know it's not made to be resilient in any way, only fast, as fast as possible, but man, the memcache_tool script just made my life a million times easier by facilitating a complete data transfer between two memcache instances, allowing for a rolling update without any session data loss!
...One day... I hope it can be migrated to redis... But for now... Thanks lord for the dump command and the wrapper script <3 -
Every day my company reminds us that we must be a team. My coworker is near to degree in software eng, but have some difficults. This person made many mistakes in the past, but it's still with us. He need an help, but everyone is too busy!!!
Fuck you motherfuckers!!! I help him and after graduation, "I'll slap on the face"! But now, I cannot leave him alone. When is so close to graduation...
BASTARDS MOTHERFUCKERS!
