Boss emailed me that I need to work again on Saturday and Sunday.
I replied with a resignation letter.25 -
I just had a nightmare.
I never became a developer. Instead I had a normal 9-5, didn't do work at home, slept well and spent my free time on social activities.
It was horrible.3 -
My wife took the kids to the mall.
I work from home.
me: fuck yeah, I'll be able to work now, since I focus a lot more when there's a lot of silence in the house, looking forward to this coding session
me: *takes the fattest 2 hour nap*
I guess I was tired...8 -
Developers using Mac :: Work.
Developers using Linux :: Make the computer work and then work.
Developers using Windows :: Make the computer work.11 -
09:00 : 8 hours of sleep is perfect. I'll sleep at 10.
10:00 : Ah, I am still young, I don't that much sleep yet. 7 hours should do.
11:00 : 6 hour is the limit. I must sleep at least 6 hours to work properly tomorrow.
12:00 : Aw, fuck this :(
Next day at work: 10 cups of coffee2 -
Today, I have a meeting with my managers. I’m going to demand more work and higher pay.
Wish me luck12 -
Enough is enough!!!
I just received an email from HR because "Your not supposed to work that much as a trainee! Your should study at home"
WELL THANK YOU, BUT DID IT EVER COME TO YOUR MIND THAT I MIGHT ACTUALLY BE WORKING?!
I just wrote back that I have tons of stuff to do, and that they can talk to my boss if they want me to work less.
So to sum up:
I solve problems and get screamed at by HR in return?
IT FUCKING GREAT10 -
What do you guys do when you get bored at work?
this is what I do:
1. Drink Water
2. Stare at the code
3. Go to Bathroom

I'm torn between telling my co-workers about devRant or not telling them so I can rant about work.3

There was a time when I laughed at "I work because I wanna buy games but I can't play them because I work". There was.4

After 8 hours of focusing on two monitors at work, I go home so I can focus on my own two monitors.3

Mac: you have to reboot for updates
Me: ok
Mac: ... ... (It didn't start anymore)
Work project was there and I did not push :(12 -
You go to work, have no work to do, so you work on your own personal projects.
Whats more fun than getting paid to do whatever you want...3 -
My instincts are telling me that i should resign from this company asap.
My team lead knows a to z of the project and he is the all rounder guy here. If my team lead leaves, I could be the one replacing him. But i don't want to accept this kind of responsibility.
My life goal is to not get sucked into the 9 to 5 life or work in this kind of environment.
The only pro i find is that i now have few more cool friends.
But I'd rather be be my own boss and work 24/7.
I now feel like living a lie going to work everyday..8 -
I hate, HATE MYSELF!! I am an awful developer. I am an awful person.
I am trying so hard. To be a better person. To be a better developer. But, as a person I am again finding it difficult to empathize. At work, I really want to explore MERN stack but that I have to do it out of working hours. And damn! work is too much, I don't get time.
I need to work on a new project, for 2 months the discussions with MILLION TEAMS ARE GOING ON!!! NOTHING!! NOBODY HAS ANY IDEA!! THEY MIGHT FIRE ME!! I AM STRESSED!!
IT'S 1AM HERE AND I AM WRITING UNIT TESTS!! I want to cry. I want a partner maybe who can support me or maybe it's my mood swings.28 -
So a few months ago I started dating. I love my girlfriend with all my heart, but something has been bothering me a bit. I can no longer easily do my day-to-day work. Whereas previously I would be productive at any time I want, now it's more of a "I can work whenever she wants to work". It's hard to balance and even harder to actually get to it.
Previously I would stay with her during the day, and then wake up in the night to do all the household chores, learn her language and if I can get to it, even improve some of my shitty code. Needless to say, she didn't like that I didn't sleep with her and it's not exactly healthy either - I barely slept at all.
How do you balance work/relationship without throwing sleep time in the mix? Both work and girlfriend are at home for me.7 -
That moment when clients employees comment on your working hours and the amount of work you do...
Fun fact: I'm replacing their jobs with applications.1 -
When coding at work is too intense to return the coffee mugs. One more to complete the triangle and call to our the coffee gods.4
-
On your first day of work, when you're being shown around, the employer always says, "We encourage our employees to think outside the box".
This statement usually coincides with them showing you your cubicle.2 -
So I just got let go because there was not enough work to keep me full time. Yet my manager was farming out dev work to a 3rd party developer... Fml3
-
The deadline is tomorrow and we should work for extra hours to make it through! Oh look, a video about roman army structure!2

Customer call.
Customer: what's the status of the software?
Me: it's a bit of wood work.
Customer: wood work?!
Me: yes, I think it would work.
Customer: ...

If you work 8 hours a day sincerely, you will become a manager and work 12 hours a day
Made my day...hahahahah -
My week at glance:
Monday: Sunday night hangover
Tuesday:Prepare report for progress meeting.
Wednesday: Progress meeting
Thursday:work little bit for next week progress meeting.
Friday: weekend fever and hence not in mood to work.
#big #company #work #culture5 -
It's Friday folks and my huge bag of enthusiasm for work has just been found empty. Have a great day
-
I work slow and my work is delayed all because you keep on changing the design and the UX, adding more features and yet keeping the same deadline
-
When your customer says "I'm sure it takes little time to do it" and you know you just won another two weeks of work...3

I just accepted an offer as a backend dev for a startup in Berlin, Germany. I’m looking forward to all the coffee and beer I will drink while I work. 😆7

When your work alarm goes off on a Bank Holiday Monday because Apple still dont have a feature to disable alarms on Bank Holidays. Cheers Tim.2

I'm in the process of changing jobs and at the point where I need to sign the contract with the new company.
The concern I have is that of work life balance. There is a clause that obviously speaks to overtime and renumeration thereof, etc. But, there is also a clause that mentions that their office hours extend to Saturday mornings.
Speak to my wife about it and all I get is "That's how it is in your industry. I know of my other programmer friends who work late and long hours, so the fact that you don't currently work overtime seems very rare."
I don't think it's rare nor should it be the normal to have to constantly work extra hours. This is not a thing of being lazy or not dedicated to your job, but rather that you put in the time that is required and that alone should be enough to show your "dedication" to the job. Personally I feel that if you're fucking there everyday, giving your best, and you leave at the end of the day, no questions asked, that it is good enough!3 -
In the meeting where I gave my notice period, the manager told me I won't find another company that doesn't make you do "donkey work" like us.
Currently hee-hawing from work.3 -
Wake Up. Cook. Eat. Work. Clean. Meetings. Work. Eat. Work. Netflix & Chill. Sleep. Repeat. 😎😝
How does your Work from Home look like?🧐9 -
Switching back and forth between python and VBA for work and private projects is like being forced to use a walker during the day only to jump into the fastest Ferrari straight after work2
-
God, don't you love it when your team COMPLETELY IGNORES all the work you do, dismisses it outright, and then acts rude to you? And then when they do take one of your suggestions, they say 'wow you ACTUALLY contributed' as if you haven't been trying to contribute the whole time only to get ignored?!9
-
Time management tips one must follow to be successful:-
1. Remove distractions:- Phone, Whatsapp, Instagram, FB, etc. All away from you during work.
2. Remove clutters: Get rid of not required things.
3. Eliminate redundancy
4. Emulate others: (My favourite) If someone has spend time and done some work. Do not reinvent the same work done just replicate that work and continue from that point.
5. Share burden: Team work and depending on others is not bad.
6. Make work fun: Most important if you enjoy your work you will give your best.5 -
Unpopular opinion:
I currently work remotely, but as it's my first job I would love to work locally with other devs in a room... Motivating can be quite hard sometimes when you're alone.
(And I know this attitude will probably change once I worked locally some time)3 -
Reminding myself: No matter how stupid the work is or how a coworker is acting like an ass, it does not matter. I'm here for the salary and I have other things to do out of work.5
-
Last day of work. Literally only few more hours before I give up this lifestyle. Feeling little emotional as i look at the screen of my work laptop. It's a Windows 10 Lenovo ideapad .
Gonna miss those days when it made me mad bugging with updates. But it has been good to me, did more than i expected from it. I kept it turned on since half year or so and contrary to popular belief about it's race, it never disappointed me. We had our little secrets going on. Time to wipe them off and say goodbye. 😿3 -
The feeling when you just want to code code code but you have tons of other work 😥
Wish I could just program those tasks (laundry, dogwalk etc.)
Might as well build a robot, uh?!1 -
I really start to lose motivation to work when working from home..
I find myself watching YouTube videos for 4-5h a day instead of working..
Still get my sprint work done but man, it’s so boring after a year at home..8 -
My current situation:
Manager: How is Project A coming? Project A is top priority. I would like to see a PR today with fixes to the current tickets.
Me: Project A is priority! Sure!
*after 2hours*
Manager: How is project B coming along? I did not see any PR’s coming in?
Me: I am working on project A as it is priority.
*after 1 hour*
Manager: How is project C coming? There is one ticket pending. We need a fix for it today asap!
Me: Starts project C as project A would take more time. Starts Work on project C.
*after 1 hour*
Boss: How is project A coming? Where is the PR?
Me: As you said you need a fix for project C today, i started working on project C as it has only 1 ticket to be fixed.
Boss: I told you project A is priority, why are you working on project C?
Me: *doesn’t reply*
*after 1 hour*
Boss: There is a ticket pending in project D. Did you make a fix for it?
*This is my usual day at work.
*I am the only developer in my current company. It’s not a software development company.
*Note: I do complete all the work and create PR’s for all “pending” work at the end of the day for all projects and leave for home at around 10pm :)
What do you think? Lol6 -
Never do personal stuff at work, never do work stuff unless hours are being counted. Proper separation of duties.
Boss always tells us we only work 38 hours a week and any other time we do we can take off later.
Procrastination for work projects thus usually involves working on unrelated, more exciting projects instead of the one with the hard deadline ;)1 -
!rant
Last week I finished what I thought to be unpaid work experience working in IT (more like programming), at the end of it I had a meeting with the boss who offered me paid work next summer and also gifted me a £150 amazon voucher for the work I did.
I sold my XBOX (ew the unproductivity) and use the voucher to buy a Mac Mini. Going from Windows, Mac OS X is significantly better, I prefer bash to power-sh*t.
TLDR; I worked for 5 weeks and got a Mac3 -
I can't get any work done at work... The potatoe they gave me for a laptop is 5 years old, Every day I was approx 2 hours (no joke) for it to power up, open up my visual studio solutions, connect to the VPN, and open my browsers.
Then my fucking shit computer loses connectivity with one of my 2 monitors every 15 min so I need close the lid, reopen it again so it "picks up the monitor" then wait another 5 min for my windows to respond.
Agh!!!!!
It's frustrating too cuz my boss ordered me a new computer 2 months ago. But cuz I work for corporate bozos it took them 2 months just to process/place the order for a new computer. So now I have to wait even longer just to have a functioning computer.6 -
Is it just me who looks forward to long weekend but when it's actually here, gets bored after 2 days and now looks forward to get back to work?
Or have I lost it?3 -
First day of work, the guy says that I must arrive until 9am, he isn't here, now I'm sitting waiting for him (it's 9:45)4
-
You know you're obsessed with your current codebase when you work on it until 8am the previous night, and are then annoyed at the inconvenience of not being able to work on it because you have to attend a party hosted by another dev, which you know will actually be fun2
-
Guys I need your help. I'm a student working at a very small development business as a developer ( who would have thought) and I really love working there ( nice colleagues, I learn something every day) but recently I don't get enough work. it really feels like half of my day is spend running after the seniors asking for work and it starts to get really annoying not only for my but for them too. and most recently I'm just going home early because I don't want to just sit there unproductivly :/ but this is not really a solution either because at the moment I'm trying to work 40 hours ( I get paid 20) to get some overtime to not have to work as much as soon as my university starts. but now I don't get my hours and have to chase for work... does anyone have any advice for me?6

Do you think that "Work From Home" or "Remote Work" tends to reduce the work life boundary for the employees?
What I think is that Managers feel fine pinging employees at any time of the day. And as employees either you get good at ignoring messages or work outside the working hours.20 -
Remote work sucks! Honestly almost everyone that doesn't work remotely thinks it'll be nice to work remotely. Though there are advantages like doing whatever the fuck you want to and working however the fuck you want to work. (only thing is you just can't attend meetings without a shirt on). But nope, it gets boring and lonely. When you lose motivation there's no one to fire you up. Burnouts will hit you more than it should if you work onsite. My first and second jobs are fully remote, and I'm sick and tired of this shit. Hopefully the third would be onsite.8
-
First day back at work, can't remember why my program wasn't working or what the fugg I was doing before I went on leave3
-
I'm freelance and I work from home, despite being repeatedly told however my friends have no problem calling in for a cup of tea and a chat in order to stop that work. As a result, I've got to work late to make up for the lost time they've caused me during the working day.
I'm sick to death to explaining this to my friends who just don't understand that I "work from home," and that "I am not home from work."8 -
Great things aren't developed in one day and night with excessive caffeine and hard work. They are developed in many days and many nights with excessive caffeine and hard work.
-
aaarghh i left my laptop at home and now im bored as hell at work. i had things planned out for today and now i cant do them cause i dont have my laptop with me for 2 hours. the computers at work dont have everything i need :(1
-
You know what really grinds my gears more than anything else? Not having anything to work on at work.
That might sound like the most german thing to say but bear with me for a second.
Even though i am almost one year into my job as a junior dev, i consider myself and i probably am very new to the coding world. And even if i weren't new i would still have to continuously learn and improve. And every time i just sit in front of my working station, with nothing to do, i'd rather figure out an incredibly tedious bug, learn lisp or deal with a shitty framework.
Most of the time i don't know what to do. I improve my workflow with some bash-scripts and aliases, i read into the details of certain tools but at the end of it, i can't really get into something deeper and get value out of it because actual work might just be around the corner...3 -
You get home from work and one half of your brain goes, "Let's just code a little to catch up on the backlog", and the other half of your brain goes, "No way you psycho, we're off from work and we're not getting paid for this. I'm not helping!"
And that's why you're code sucks when you're not at work! -
Are there any people on devrant who work at an adult movies site? Like those sites also need developers right?10
-
I have a more than average paying job. Cool manager who is okay with almost anything I do .The work place and colleagues are awesome but I'm not getting any work. My title says SE but all I do at work is play. Should I leave this place or stay and work on my side projects?7

New line manager is a recluse
Hear from him maybe once a week if I'm lucky
Airs my messages for at least a day
Never felt happier at work -
Corona times and remote work be like:
hm, can't connect to my pc at work again. Why is it down? Whatever
*starts writing to collegues asking if anyone is physically present and could kick (aka. boot.) the pc.*
ah yes, fun times7 -
Over the frozen river and through the woods, to work I go...because working remotely isn’t good enough for the sorry fucks I work for.1
-
What's wrong with motivation?
Each time I have a great idea at work, I stop working, I search for informations and then, when I'm home, I can't motivate myself to work.6 -
Like who the hell invented that work days start at 8 am? Can people actually concentrate from the moment they arrive at work? For me it is 9 am till I get some work done11
-
You know you’re fucking lonely when you’re half way through your holidays (which you HAD to take) and you’re happy to get a text that you’re needed tomorrow.
At least some calls and human interaction.
Just have to make sure to get the wine and whiskey out of my system by then 😅10 -
Looks like whole world is not giving a fuck about work, recently.

Can someone explain to me why non-technical people even work in tech companies ??
I really don't want to sound like an asshole, but can you, for example, imagine that someone who doesn't even know what brick is would work on a construction site ?
Or can you imagine working in bike repair shop not knowing neither how to ride a bike nor how's bike is built ?
Sure, every company (especially large ones) needs bookkeepers/HRs/accountants etc. that don't need to know the inner workings of business.
Those people don't bother me, and they are necessary to keep the circus going.
I'm talking about all those middle management individuals.
All those "Project Managers" , "Business Analysts", "Directors' , "Principal Program Managers " etc etc ..
Such thing thing would be unthinkable in every other industry but somehow, in tech, anyone can work as long as they can throw a sufficient number of acronyms around.7 -
Just had a work review last day. They told I am meeting their expectations . Okay ,Nice..
Then at night , talking to a friend working in same company ,heard her review significantly exceeding expections and all she gets to do simple bug fixes or smaller user stories. No complaints for her.. But for my team, A little more appreciation would have been better..
When these corporate jobs will realise that sometimes an appreciation can make you work better?1 -
Ugh why is my area so shit for work!
Plenty of work if your a butcher or teacher but can't find anything in the field of IT, not even a bloody computer salesman or call centre position, really shitting me!7 -
Boss : "Hey everyone is so busy/too good to work on that project but it's really complicated af and you'll be alone. Good luck ! Oh and we are ok to hire you next year after your apprenticeship, work well and without pressure !"
Me : O_o "Ok I'll do my best, shoudn't be that complicated"
Me (1 month after) : demotivated, sick of that mission, tired, algorithm not working, I wanna die I'm a parasite for that company. Thanks giving me that work to do.1 -
You know when you work with an incompetent team or organization? No one
knows what they are doing and there is no competent leadership to set high standards and
people are making their own bullshit up? Yeah? That's my current workplace.3 -
I'm starting to get bored at work. Every fucking day is the same. I receive a design. I code that design ( aka I'm modifying the framework developed by me ). I deliver the frontend. I think that anyone with no programming experience can do my work now.
-
Any body goes through a phase where they feel unmotivated to work?
Normally, I’m the kind of person that work a lot and even code on side projects during the weekend. For the past 2 weeks+, I feel unmotivated and just want to eat, shower, Netflix and sleep.
I’m certain I’m not depressed but I don’t know if I am burnt-out though.
Anybody had similar experience?7 -
Freaking hate it when people's ringtones go off randomly at work. Gonna go mad listening to the same 4 seconds of despacito over and over again 😠
-
After I took some time off from work, I decided to accept the offer for maintenance of two projects. Those are from two old clients, so I think I will not stress too much, since I know what to expect most of the time.
The issue is, sometimes I have a hard time to keep concentration. In the past, I could work for 3h straight, totally focused, would pause for 20min for stretch, and then come back to work. Now I can only focus for 30min or 1h, and after a pause, it's hard to concentrate again.
There is a lot going on in my life right now, and I know the worry is probably distracting me. I'm trying to listen instrumental music, drinking coffee... But that's not enough. Somebody has any tip?6 -
People sometimes say "you work too much" but the truth is most of the time I'm just coding for fun. It's rare to say, but at least to me, and surely many of you guys my work is one of my hobbies. It sucks that many can't understand that.1
-
An annoying type of colleague: the kind that refuses to cooperate and insists on doing shit their own way because they have done it that way for years and they become little crybabies whenever someone new tries to work with them.
Somehow managers accept their baby-like behavior because they've been producing output. However, like my Business Processes professor said: "Don't focus on output".
It's just annoying trying to work with these guys. -
How many hours of actual productive work do you devs average a day? Honestly, I think I average about 2 hours of honest, good work in my 8 hour day. Between random meaningless meetings that could be emailed out or just daily distractions (coworkers chatting, my phone, etc). Am I alone in this?8

The Github repos for my work have a 'facepalm' label. I die a little inside everytime I have to use them.1

I took a day off work to go enjoy camping.
I've never felt so much anxiety about work at this time. I feel like I need to be working right now.4 -
I need a stress ball. I'm working a thesis for my honors, a website, a hybrid app, some graphic design work. All of these are due mid next month. I need prayers and tips.3

Welcome to Git, where when you try to split a commit you end up making 8 more commits than you want.
Based on a true story, today at work -
Still a student, working part time at a dev company, doing small work 'cause they have nothing to make me do, and today the two person I'm supposed to work with are on leave...1

I try to do my work and shut up about it but it is true; work sucks the life out of your soul slowly, everyday.7
-
Fuck being asked every time if I fix computers, Bitch I code in them!
It's like being asked: do you fix cars? No? But if work using your car, how come you don't know how to fix them?2 -
You know what would be nice? Coding and exploring for personal fun instead of for work! Even outside of work it's become about work now, because the market is so toxicly exigent!
Can't wait to do my own side projects.10 -
How long can you work in a role with no potential that bores you shitless but pays an astronomical amount?15
-
I like going to work on casual wear, I don't like going to work on formal wear but my boss sayings that it's part of the corporate culture and we have to follow it.
Do you guys go to work on formal or casual wear?6 -
Can't wait to get back to work tomorrow, long weekend of family has got me antsy for a jira ticket1

Do you prefer working remote or in the office?
I like to view these as equal choices. I don't think offices are as bad as some people make them up to be (of course heavily depends on the environment and company!). In opposed to working remote, offices can help you focus more on work and leave work problems "at work".
While, if you're working remote, it's not unlikely for work and personal life to become so intertwined that it's hard to tell them apart anymore. It's hard to not think about work at home if home is where you work.
I believe an ideal is somewhere inbetween - not entirely remote, but not entirely office focused either. Mixing and matching seems like the one approach where you get to have most of the benefits, but with the least negatives. It doesn't seem necessary to always be at the office but it also doesn't seem good for you to always be cooped up at home.7 -
Some people go fishing, others are into fitness, and some like to go hunting. Me? I'm running late for work 😖1

Random wishes: I want to work for Microsoft. To be specific, I want to participate in their 10 weeks intern program.
Why? Well that's my goal...3 -
I am in this weird situation, where I work with a pretty cool team and have an awesome commute to work, and a nice salary. But I don't like the actual work that I am doing, nor the why I our team is run. Due to some personal events coming up and being still fairly new in the job I also don't want to switch (yet). Does somebody have/had similar experiences?
-
My boss tried to make me work at holiday (there's no work till 5th of Jan). I laughed at the proposal more than I should, then he understood what I meant and didn't say anything 😄

I was watching cards @ rams on Monday. Commercials were on so naturally I was using my phone when suddenly I hear the slack's notification sound from somewhere in the room. I look up thinking what teammate is messaging me and what could they possibly want, only to realize there's a slack advert on and the notification sound came from it. Why would slack show ad mid NFL games AND put a sound that everyone associates with work? I am 🤏 close to suing slack for causing work trauma outside work hours1
-
So the bus I get into work has been cancelled and my office manager said I could have the day off but I had some important stuff he needed me to finish so I remembered I had TeamViewer installed on my work machine so I'm going to be working from home today4
-
Whenever I hear "this <person> is going to work on <project>" I edit my "bus factor of 1" wiki page.
Teams work on projects. People work on teams.5 -
So I just got the brand spanking new MacBook Pro M2, primarily because the MacBook Air shitbox from 2014 started crashing when I started VSCode...
So now that I have a "proper" laptop, I should be able to work remote, right?... Right?!
Nope! Because our IDE of choice is (I fucking kid you not): Netbeans 7.4!, maybe 8.2... And we use SVN.
And apparently Netbeans 14 just shits the bed when I try to open our projects. Intellij is also no help, because our build scripts require Netbeans...
So the workaround? Parsec, of course!
So now I'll be able to work remote, by remoting into my windows desktop at work.
What a lovely connected world we live in!8 -
Lately I take work literally seriously, not due to motivation but due to fear, more on that later, but this is what I think about lately while I'm working
> that line of code should fix it
> oh shit I should've checked logs
> let me check logs
> let me put 10 breakpoints in code and javascript in chrome
> why is this bug not reproducing?
> why I have to work on someone else's spaghetti code?
> this loop iterates over all customers' data I'll just step over it, Oh fuck I resumed
etc etc
I'm feared because where I live, isn't a good place for software developers as there aren't companies which hire, those who hire need ninja developers who complete 1 JIRA Sprint/Phase in 1 day, Here I feel safe as there are people to correct me plus coffee machine -
hi guys, do you have extra work and need a budget friendly dev to help you? hit me up for quality work on a deadline. my tech stack is html, css, js, react, and currently learning ruby on rails. i need to gain some experience working on projects + be able to pay up some bills
-
Just because I don't believe in "the mission", doesn't mean I am not coming in and not giving up to ~60% every work day.
-
I have been swamped with work lately and just wanted two hours for me, currently ignoring messages of my colleagues and thinking about exescuses to give tomorrow, but God it's worth it
-
When other teams don't do their work well and block my work I have to play VR games all day.
Damn them!
I've reached a level where even without Quest2 on I see in 3D... even when I'm looking at 2D things (e.g. devRant's rants)
Damn them!1 -

What do you do to relax at work when things get heavier and life feels more stressful?
I kinda need ideas 'cus I'm tired and I tend to get grumpy and mad. :(1 -
When you're programming at home and you struggle on something you might search on Stack Overflow.
But when you're at work, what do you do? Ask to other co-workers and maybe search on SO as well?5 -
When I arrive 5 months ago to the company, I found that I'll have to work with an internee and someone that has a Masters degree, it is his first job and is in the company for more than a year and a half.
Me thinking, it's gonna be fine, but noooo, it's hell on earth!
What to do with someone like that and he does his work 5x slower and you have to repeat yourself 10 times because he forgets everything?
By the way, the 5x slower when I compare to the internee... -
Any suggestions to work on coding (php/sql atm) during downtime while at work? I've been learning css and js (front/back) for a year while unemployed. Just got IT call centre job in highly monitored corporate environment. Have potential side programming job but need more practice.4

Why do companies pile on the work in the Summer and have less in the Winter? I want to do shit in the Summer. Let's bust balls in the Winter when it's too damn cold to do anything!1
-
When you need to know A to Z and your colleague only gives you A to C to work with, you just KNOW it is not going to be a healthy work environment.1
-
Today for my last 2016's day at work, I fix a bug in two minutes but it took me two days to find a solution...
I think that it's my best years ending of my life! -
It feels like I cannot take it anymore, waking up to goto work at 9 feels unbearable for a hacker. My mind doesn't work and it's routine as fuck. How do you guys do it?4
-
Is it just me or there is always a work emergency (or clients suddenly needing something new done right now) on the day before leaving for holidays?1
-
Everyone: Keep people safe and work from home!
My power company: We were going to turn off your power for maintenance but now we won't to help people work from home.
Also my power company today : Hope you didn't need your power to work from home. Good luck with that.
🤦♂️1 -
I know I shouldn't do this, but I'm so frickin bored I end up resuming tasks from work here at my parents' house, in my old bedroom.
Anyway, merry christmas and happy holidays! -
I'm a web developer for a year and I have a work experience girl coming in on Monday that I have to babysit.
she probably won't know how to code. what to do?9 -
I guess this is more of a work environment question than a dev one. Are you friends with your teammates/ coworkers at work ?
I’ve had some bad experiences and now I’m in a much saner environment and despite everyone being nice, some afterworks and out of work events, I still can’t quite give my full trust. Should I ? I can’t shake the feeling something is gonna go wrong if I do…
EDIT: For additional context, I work in a big company where my interactions with my colleagues are not really followed closely like they would be in a startup I guess.5 -
at work....
windows: please restart to use newly installed tool
me: *opens menu and sees "update and restart"* NOOOoo this takes longer than usual
me: well see y'all im gonna go get some breakfast1 -
Okay. Four work days remaining this week, but still six days worth of work. My project manager sucks at maths.3
-
Other dev in my department thought it was okay to comment out the latest version of jquery lib that was used in the project and replace it with about 2 year old version to make his feature work. He did not informed anybody about this and today when build was tested, blame was on me because the feature i implemented does not work. I found issue was because of old jquery lib he put.
Funny thing is, his feature does not work with latest jquery version.
I guess it's gotta be either me or him. -
One thing I learned over my few work years is:
1.Never do anything for free.
2.Be irreplaceable however you can.
3.Most managers ain't shit so don't play nice and end up getting stomped.7 -
Little calculation:
you have probably around 20 days holiday per year.
After 60 year old everything is more or less a gift, so I wouldn't count on it.
Let's say you are going to work 30 years. That is 600 days to do whatever you want.
It's less than 2 years.
Shit.
Try to count how many days left of freedom.
Shit.
Suddenly all the things I have to work on today have lost all priority6 -
How much time at work do you usually spend purely coding? How often/quick do you get bored/tired? I’m just curious what fellow developers feel like.9
-
This morning I wake up feeling stressed af and dreading going to work. I can't take it anymore. What should I do?3
-
Be honest. Given that you're not in crunch mode. Do you actually work 8 hours every day?
I have had some days but usually it's impossible for me to do actual work as a developer for 8 full hours, 5 times a week.
I feel that (without meetings), my ideal schedule for days of normal workload would be 5 hours a day. I'm strictly speaking about focused work, actual programming. Meetings don't usually rack up more than 2-3 hours per week for me.
I do my best to be in the office during the expected hours but I can't help but feel that everything about my engagement, focus and contribution at work would be better if I could just stroll in around 10, well rested, do some actual work, take a short lunch break, go at it again and go home around 15:30...
Because I feel like this I quickly get judgemental about myself if I come in at 9 and leave around 16:30 too often during a work week.
What are your thoughts on this subject?3 -
So, Our company called us back to office after 8 month.. and reason was our boss is giving.. You guys may be work on bed.. It is bad for your back.. Here we will provide you better working enviornment and please do carry your laptop to office :P
But I think its okay to work from office.. Once I was excited to work from home. But dude you can learn from the person sitting next to you, discuss things around,, can see what others are doing.. Its a progress. At home you are just u and laptop :)
Personally I think its better to work under someone superior obvious he/she should be technical and egoless.. then its more fun.3 -
My colleagues have a new challenge at work: Sing the most annoying music when arrive so that it sticks in your head all day!2
-
I love it when you are initiated into a new project within 30 minutes which must be finished in 2 weeks and you have no idea of anything! In addition, there are customers who have further problems wich must also be solved immediately!
My co-workers are all already in the holidays and enjoy the sun!
I love my work...1 -
I just think I wanna work abroad so I have left my company with a steady position. I don't know that's right or wrong.2
-
Hey guys. I'm sure this has been asked before but what kind of work laptops are you issued. And 1-10 rating of em. Just curious.
Personally: Dell Latitude e6520. 6/109 -
I've talked to people, psychiatrists and tried religion just so I can stop watching porn.
I have a beautiful wife, MSc degree in engineering and well-payed job.
But for some reason, whenever I'm alone my mind bursts images of porn, and before I know it, I'm watching porn.
Despite the things I've achieved, it feels like my true potential is hold back.
This influences my mood, development work and so on.
Mindfulness doesn't work, plugins to block it doesn't work and talking to someone doesn't work. Everything is tried.15 -
I would like to know who of you actually works as a developer in backend / mobile app work in native languages? (as to say, no js) With work I mean, actually working for a real company.1
-
I have a big problem from always being charged with a reserve of farts at work. It's like sitting on a bomb. How do you guys handle this?10
-
How can I land a remote job..... Man i am tired of commuting to work.
Fuel prices are getting higher and higher. I am tired of this drive to work place and back to home loop.6 -
For some reason, of recent I do have constant headache and I always feel like falling on the floor when I work for like 1 to 2 hours. What might be the cause of this ???3
-
Last work day before the new year and I was trying to make the manager understand that I couldn't say the max number of characters of a line because the font wasn't monospaced 😓
-
Besides my study I work as an student assistant at the university. My next project is developing an platform for children to learn the basics of programming. Really excited about it! Let the next generation meet with our work!
-
Configuring your work monitor to extend to the right and home monitor to the left so that you leave your work windows at work and home windows at home.
-
Installing the entire system on new machines. Too many configuration files and too much manual work. (New workplace, haven’t automated it yet)
-
Have you ever screw up your client just because they are not willing to pay for the work you have done? ( Asking for a friend. LOL)17
-
How your company keeps you motivated?
Is that required to be motivated and happy AF each day at the place you work?5 -
Are there any recent grads that work remotely? How did you find/get the job? What kind of work do you do? I want to try working remotely after graduation.
-
I was out of work for 6 months...I applied at a company that takes in devs and trains them. There was a test, then a personal interview, then a bootcamp process...it was hard. But I pulled through.
-
When I take a leave from work for a day, I feel lost.. two days in a row, I start working on random side or home projects.. after the third day, I don't ever want to go back to work..
I wonder how many of you feel the same... -
How much time do you actually spend working?
I personally work 10 hours per week at my job. The rest of the time I watch YouTube or something like that. I have massive quilt because of this, but everyone is happy with my work.7 -
I've recently been promoted and I'm going from hourly to salaried. Amidst this crisis and the promotion I've gotten lost in the big changes and forgot to ask the simple questions.
When tf do I leave work if I'm not tracking my hours anymore? (Or for the near future, log off of work)
I know the general consensus is "when the work is done", but we all know the work is never truly done5 -
Well here i thought i would have done work...and pooof its time to go home
All i did was refactor with and make PR...
*SIGH*
I guess today was one of those days where little work was done -
I get to work, this pops up.
Little frustrated yesterday as I had only 2 minutes out of the entire day to ask my boss burning questions. Only got through one of the 5. -
It has been sometime since my last rant, but a Tester return a work item saying it did not work. I called him shared my screen went through the item he sent back multiple times without issue and followed what he said he could not do!! Within debug and a test release. I said "I'll send it back to be signed off" He said "Well it did not work for me so I'll be sending it back tomorrow!"1
-
Taking work-related tasks as personal challenges and conquering them has worked well for me so far.
Increases the level of contempt you get from work and also makes working so much more fun. -
What's your ideal and current work time?
How many hours do you work per day and when do you start?
And what days you are mostly off?9 -
That moment when your wired Internet connection fails, and your two mobile backup connections also fail. Remote work is great :)
-
Fellas, how many hours of work a day would you consider optimal?
Anything beyond 10 hours and I feel quite exhausted.6 -
Any U.K. / EEA devs with substantial Angular experience?
Asking for a client, it’d be remote work with visits to the office every so often.
Contract work too, so ideal for freelancers. -
I have the weirdest mind. I cant seem to work at all or struggle alot but when it comes to after lunch walk, the hours before home. Im like a code machine and do soooo much in that time that it scares me that i can't seem to switch it on when i want1
-
What is the general rule/idea around meetings outside of your work hours?
It has happened several times that I wasn't able to join some meetings that were outside of my work hours. I try to join but some thing or the other comes up and then I miss it. I make sure to join any meeting that's highly important or if it's about anything related to my work (or if I'm required to attend).
I work with people in different time zones and there was a meeting set after 8:30pm my time, and I wasn't able to join. My coworker messaged me, in a passive aggressive way (seemingly), asking if he needs to remind me before every meeting in my calendar so that I would join.
I feel like I'm not being paid enough for the work that I do, and I work around 8-9 hours (sometimes 10 and I don't get paid for overtime).
On top of that, am I obligated to attend every meeting and not have anything planned or unplanned to do after work hours? (I don't think I should have any obligation)
I don't have previous experience of working with international teams/clients before, so I'm not sure what I should do here.9 -
When you config and test a wireless router in office and works fine but that motherfucker doesn't work in 5meters height :|2
-
Doing office even when it's vacation day today...
Not because I am a workaholic or there is work pressure from company...
But because I like doing my work as a developer and it's quite peaceful and fun to code for some hours rather than idling around at home figuring out how to kill time especially during this lockdown period...
P.S. Planning to find some time to learn from online tutorials too in the evening 😁2 -
What should you do if the project manager is not assigning you any new work after the backlog already has been cleaned up?
I currently work as a junior front-end dev. For the past few weeks, the 2 juniors (incl. me) are lacking tickets. For example, I got 2.5 days of work assigned during our 3-week sprint. We already followed some courses, read some books & created some designs for upcoming features (that have no "functional specifications" written down).3 -

What's your business life like? Do you work at home (while being employed) or do you do you seperate private and business-related physically? -
to be happy about weekend or to cry at all the work that needs to be done before heading to weekend1
-
Why is it that when I have motivation to work, I have no work and when I don't have motivation to work I have a lot of work?5
-
Hello World! Question, what do your team usually do on the last day of work? We prefer push and merge our project branches and resolve conflicts, because nobody wants to write code 🤣
-
Working from 7:00 to 15:00,after work don't have that much time to workout, so I try ti weighted push-ups every minute or so from 2pm till 3..biggest problem is when the code embraces me and I forget that I should work out a bit.. And yes, I work from home3
-
I really wish i can jump and be focussed like alot of the developers i have met. I tend to take long to get focused and long to get out of it. The reason why it was so hard to work with companies and easy to work remotely
-
What are your plans for the weekend, and if you weren't doing what you're doing now, what else do you think you'd be doing for work?

I'm not endorsing the book in any way, but this post is spot on:

Hi guys,
I am a self-teaching front end engineer currently seeking for a role where I can gain actual work experience. I am a hard worker and a fast learner.
I don't mind not getting paid, I would only require a data/internet subscription so as I can continue to upskill.7
