What advice would I give a new dev?
"Learn COBOL"
No one specified that it had to be 'good advice'7 -
When I started to learn functional programming I asked myself: "What the hell is this?"
Fast forward a couple of years, I still wonder what 'this' is.7 -
So I was just about to learn Angular for my job. Right after I installed it and initialized the first app folder I was told I don't need to learn it anymore.
Me being happy, right click folder, delete...
Deleting 30.035 files (225 MB)
WHAT THE FUCK10 -
A world leader...? What a bunch of horseshit... Learn from CNN how to put the wrong guy on the pedestal...12
-
You haven't actually *begun* to learn anything until you've shouted FUCK THIS SHIT (or some variation) out loud at least once.
The anger is what makes it stick in your memory.10 -
Being a sysadmin, I never write any code.
But I do want to learn that.
What is the easiest language to learn?
(I am lazy)53 -
Yes, this is actually a real thing.
I wonder in what you learn in the prerequisite "Keyboard and Mouse skills" class if this one teaches you how to type and delete text...8 -
DO NOT TEACH DIRECTLY HOW TO USE SOMETHING! TEACH THEM HOW TO LEARN BY THEMSELVES!!!! What they teach is outdated and unfit for most students2

So im trying to learn to install arch Linux and it's safe to say... I have no fucking clue what in doing :-D9
-
C++ is like HTML in the sense that everyone wants to learn it as a first language.
DON'T LEARN C++ AS A FIRST LANGUAGE! YOU DON'T KNOW WHAT YOUR GETTING YOURSELF INTO.22 -
- hold yourself accountable for your mistakes
- keep track your mistakes and learn from them
- put thought in what you do
- be organised
- become comfortable asking for and offering help
- realise that some problems have no universal solution
- don't just copy what others do, but also think for yourself
- learn to be patient2 -
Oh look MS-DOS on GitHub?!
Time to run through more code I don't understand and see what I can learn and potentially port :-D1 -
Colleges aren't teaching enough practical applications of why we devs do what we do. Get students engaged with small business! Get them to think about how they apply what they learn to the real world!! We need creative new ideas from developers that think outside the damn book!2

What is your favourite thing about programming?
Mine is that there is always something new to learn11 -

Omfg, after webdeving for so long, I recently started to learn python and image manipulation.
I'm in love.
What have I done lol2 -
Was anyone forced to learn an obscure programming language during college? If so what was it and have you used it since?
Mine was ADA95 and nope lol28 -
I found university very worthwhile, mainly for what it exposed me to that I wouldn’t have necessarily learned otherwise. University exposed me to a lot of knowledge which allowed me to discover the fields and concepts that really interested me. It also forced me to learn math, and I’ve come to really love mathematics, even though my knowledge is still not that deep. I really respect and appreciate math now that I have more than a superficial understanding of it.
CS-wise, the things that have been most useful in practice have been complexity, data structures, concurrency, and others, but complexity is probably the absolute most important thing to at least learn the basics of.
I would not say that university is a necessity though. You can absolutely get by teaching yourself, especially if you are disciplined/interested enough to keep doing it. The important thing is to learn *what* to learn.2 -
I recently recognized voting buttons are (++) and (--), then shared my friend near me but he didn't get anything. I explained what do they mean.
Thanks devRant, a lawyer started to learn programming 😁2 -
FFS GOOGLE, WHAT MAKES YOU THINK THAT A PERSON WHO WANTS TO LEARN MASCHINE LEARNING, DOESN'T KNOW HOW TO CALCULATE THE DISTANCE BETWEEN 2 POINTS???4

"Hey, I learned what the internet was yesterday and read some random stuff some strangers said. Let me tell you about the best materials to learn web development."
- Way too many people2 -
Ok, I've tried multiple times to learn it, but just hate React and JSX. I don't know why-maybe because I'm a not a professional developer yet and can't see the right use case for it? I feel that's it's so overly complicated to render some HTML. Should I keep trying to learn this or just work with what I like for my projects, then learn React later? ARGH18

Does anyone know what the Boolean Pythagorean Triples problem or the Ramsey Theory? I read about it while reading an article on brute reason, a kind of compliment to brute force...8 -
In a forum far far away...
<user> I need help understanding something about this library.
<various users> This is how it works. This is something to consider. Here is a good way to learn all of this. etc Really helpful people.
<user> I would say more about what I want to do, but I don't want to receive any more "mouthful of unsolicited advises ".
Really? You fucking ask a question on a forum about what you want to learn. Everyone there takes it seriously and provides some really golden shit on how to learn the topic. Then you shit on them for daring to provide ways to learn the topic?
I don't know if this is a language barrier, or if they are using Google translate. I have no idea. But they come across as an asshole.6 -
Hmmm...maybe when applying for a Java developer role, and then being asked “what would you like to learn at this company?”...I think saying “Java” isn’t the right thing to say 😅1
-
What is starting out progaming without explaining to your parents why you making an object move when you press a key, is not only impressive but also took you 15 hours to learn?4
-
People refusing to learn an improved programming language or technology, because it might contradict to what they "already know" and you're just there mastering it and appreciating its advantages that you will never learn if you had a closed mindset.4

Building an amazingly complex system from scratch in Rust means 2 things to me...
1. Really cool tech with great syntax to learn
2. My value as a developer will be going up a lot. In terms of the salary expectations
I really love when I get to learn a new technology, not for a project or course, but to build really cool real-world applications.
That’s what drives me!5 -
I've been eyeing Rust for quite a while and it definitely caught my curiosity, specially after the SO survey. Now I want to learn Rust but I normally need to work on a project in order to actually learn and keep myself motivated, yet I have no idea what to start, any ideas?15

A lot of things dev say are true, but this one I don't believe as much:
Many devs say that it's important for everybody to learn a bit of a basic programming language, to learn about computers and how programs are made. I disagree, I think that instead people should learn *how* things work. Ex, in my school people always use a VPN to get around the proxy. I don't care if they know basic statements, I think it's more important to learn how a VPN works. Most of them don't even know what VPN stands for. Am I the only one?3 -
Need to learn JavaScript.
My question is: What good books/websites/ youtubers etc are out there that have good explanations.
Thx in advance.64 -
When someone asks you what programming language they should learn, don't tell them the one you prefer.
Instead, ask them what area they plan to focus on, like,
Web frontend: javascript
Web backend: javascript
Mobile apps: javascript
Games: javascript
AI: javascript6 -
If you're currently in college and wish to get placed in a major tech giant like Amazon or Facebook:
Don't learn React.js, instead learn Linked lists.
Don't learn Flutter, instead learn Binary search trees.
Don't learn how to perform secure Authorization with JWTs, instead learn how to recursively reverse a singly linked list.
Don't learn how to build scalable and fault tolerant web servers, instead learn how to optimally inverse a binary search tree.
These big tech companies don't really care what real world development technologies you've mastered. Your competence in competitive programming and data structures is all that matters.
The system is screwed. Or atleast I am.18 -
Hi guys I'm new in dev
I was wondering what was best to learn first : Angular, React or Vue ?
I already know JS and JQuery.
Thanks guys :)36 -
Find what you want to build. Watch some videos. Code. Grab some books. Code. Find some friends to code. Code.
And learn some theory to improve your code. Code.
Get a job. Code. Get paid.1 -
I want to learn something new and programing related. But got no idea what. Make suggestions, if you wish.21

What do you guys think about TypeScript? Does it worth time to learn the syntax? Also what is the relation between Angular 2 and TypeScript?4

Been looking into 2D maps for a game. I am learning how to use tools that do autotiling. I want to have generated worlds for terrain. It is interesting how the scope of what you are learning starts expanding rapidly and can overwhelm you. I started wanting to learn autotiling. This went from that to autogen, to modifying terrain, to how to store generated terrain, to how to store difference between autogen and player modified, to how to separate things into chunks, to how to store a whole world worth of data! Like dude, chill. Just learn how to use autotiling first. Then learn how autogen, then learn how to efficiently chunk things,. Also the 2d data won't be big so just store the data you genned so if modified. The worlds don't have to be ultra huge. Really stop freaking out what it could be and see what it is. JUST FUCKING ITERATE!
It is wild to watch yourself get featuritus without learning how to crawl fist. Just divide and conquer.29 -
I used to check what local market wants, but after joining devRant I noticed local market sometimes feels in stone age, so since February 2017, devRant is best place to learn either asking, or checking what others are doing it a helps in getting ideas on what kind of project and language needs to be done for the sake of learning

What To Learn?
I'm a beginner in web development and have knowledge about html, css, JavaScript, jQuery, Sass, NodeJS, Express, MongoDB, Passport. You can consider me to be a beginner full stack developer, but I'm confused about what to learn further. There are so many front end frameworks that one can spend his entire life learning them. React, Vue, Angular, Backbone, etc. But I always want to learn backend properly, then there's Rails, PHP, SQL, Python. Can anyone atleast tell me what to learn and why exactly? This thing's making me mad and anxious.24 -
Coding YouTubers existence is the reason the quality of new age software engineers is going down the hill.
Learn MERN stack,
PHP's dead,
Buy my course, it's 20% off
Learn just good enough that you can land a job
Learn how to prompt ChatGPT better
These shitty pieces of advice will never enable software engineers to truly understand the core concepts of what they're doing.
It's sad, really.8 -
The only thing I studied from HTML is that you have to close anything you have opened.../>
I already had some experience with C++ and suddenly they suggested me to take a mentoring.
My mentor - Well, we're going to learn HTML.
- I'm busy. I'm learning python...
- What have you done? Did you learn the HTML?
- Eeh I need to do a neutral network project for the uni. Wait please...
- It's time to learn HTML.
- Eeh I have a deadline in these days. I have to make an Ethereum smart contract. Wait please...
- HTML!
- WAIT!
Finally I asked my mentor to stop this fucking recursion. I'm not going to learn it.1 -
I kind of want to learn Japanese. I want to be able to watch untranslated anime and understand what they are saying.4

I see more and more people encouraging people to learn Haskell. But why ? What can you do with it, that you would not do with another language? what have you done with haskell?7
-
Don't. Especially while you're not a senior specialist. It doesn't really matter bad company or good: they all have something bad, they all have something good. From the bad examples you will learn WHAT, HOW and *WHY* should not be done. From the good examples you will learn what and why works and how efficiently.
Next month I'm gonna be working on a project that is SO bad I will flood DR with rants. But I'm looking forward to it, because I know I will learn what else should not be done.
Better learn from their mistakes than your own2 -

I Just realized that during my sort conversation with my boss tonight where I said I haven't learned anything new from this job in years. That usually I bring what I learned during my own time to work. He said "didn't you learn something new investigating this issue?"
NO I DO NOT WANT TO FUCKING HAVE TO HAVE A PROD ISSUE IN ORDER TO LEARN SOMETHING NEW.... -
Finally started to *properly* learn Java and make an Android application, instead of copying random code from SO. So glad I made that decision. Well, still a lot of things to learn :/
Here is what I made so far, if you are interested.

A friend of mine wants to start learn HTML/CSS/JS and ask me where to start.
Since I started to write them more than 10 years ago, I have no clue where to start, what good ressources are today and so on.
Therefore: what would you recommend, I recommend her?8 -
What are the things in computer science do I need to learn?
So yeah, I'm still in high school and will be entering IT in a few years, but I am willing to learn now. I already have a good grasp of programming and can create good desktop apps and basic web apps, so teaching basic concepts such as variables, loops, functions is done for me.. But what computer science concepts should I learn next?18 -
What if I’m dumb as hell in reality and I don’t recognize it. I keep holding on to this false belief that I can learn programming, but going nowhere in reality. What if I don’t have any talent at all?10

Recently, I have planned out my weekends to learn new stuffs.
And guess what, since I needed a project to start with, I have taken devrant related projects.
Example: Writing a python library as devrant api wrapper.
I have few other stuffs to learn too which I will begin once I finish this. That too most probably will also have some relationship with DevRant.. -
I want to learn C++. I know C#, Java and Ruby. Should I go Directly, or there is some sort of path?
How long it takes to master it? I am a quick learner, I catch things a lot faster.
What impact it has on my skills?
Is it really a nightmare to learn?8 -
I want to learn a new programming language. What should I learn? I am torn between Kotling, Go and Scala.
Or should I just learn a new JS framework? ;)17 -
After your boss side tracks your udemy course to learn something else and then going back to that course after a month like "wait what the hell is this alien language"

Little brother wants learn programming and asked me if I could help him learn it.
"Sure, I'll show you how I learned it."
Gave him a book for starters to go through it. To have a slightly better time, I'll read his code and recommend some ways to go.
In my opinion it's important to learn to learn by yourself and learn to help yourself. Therefore I think this is kinda a good way to start with a bit of supervision from me.
What do u think of it, or how would you have done it?
I mean sure I could be some kind of teacher, but with a fulltime job + uni I don't really have time for that.4 -
An OSS library made me learn a new language and I am so happy it did!
I came across a well implemented System Verilog parser written in Rust. It was so good to see someone putting in the effort to write that library, I wanted to contribute to it. I had zero knowledge in Rust but I thought, what the heck, let me learn it.
And man it was a steep learning curve. After a 2 weeks or so, now I have very basic understanding of the language. What better way to learn something than just diving into an actual project?
So, today I raised an issue to the developer for a possible improvement to the library. I hope he accepts it -
In 2012 during a job interview I was asked how did you learn Photoshop. I said by creating memes. My answer failed because the interviewer didn't knew what was a meme so I took another approx 30 seconds to pitch what was a meme.1

Random variation of how we learn based off a colleague.
1. I dont know what the fuck to do, i dont know what the fuck is going on
2. I don't know what the fuck to do, i know whats going on
3. I know whats going on, i know what to do
4. I know what to do, i dont know what the fuck is going on

Question here - what do you guys think of Kotlin?
Do you also think it'll be sufficient to learn Kotlin and not java to programm for Android?
I just began the transition, it's fun playing around with it, but a friend of mine wants to learn Kotlin to learn Android programming (and not java, he only has java basics).
What's your opinion on all this?12 -
What Vue framework would you suggest for cross platform mobile apps? Sadly, I don't really have the time to learn nativescript.9

Best! Starting my 1st year at university to learn all this stuff 😃
Worst: listening to the 4th years freak me out about what is to come 😬5 -
When you would just check the school timetable for tomorrow, but when you unlock your phone you find devrant to be the active app, and you just scroll through everything, and forget why did you even unlock your phone...
Just devrant things... -
What I learned:
Don't try to learn by practice. Study the basics by rote, using flash cards. And THEN building on the basics, learn by doing.
If I got anything wrong, I'm gonna look stupid.6 -
I’m trying to learn piano, but keep zero indexing my thumb. When I see I’m supposed to use my 5th finger, for a moment I wonder what species they think I am.6

I love our industry but it’s filled with way too many tech grifters, fakes and waste men pretending to know what they’re doing. A lot of whom low key hate coding and the people that do it, wish they were as good and those people yet lack the self awareness and humility to see where they fall short and actually learn the technology.
Even if you see the industry as just a way to make some money, learn how to code and if you can’t do that then learn to appreciate the process. Stop talking as if you know what you are doing while embarrassing yourself and coming off as a dunce and condescending to those that do.5 -
Sophomore here. For a long time this has been bugging me. I'm very skeptical about what I'm learning and what I plan to learn. Just doubting myself and feeling like a loser. So today i wanna ask, what was the road you took to be where you are now? I wanna know details
Did u exceed ur expectations and do u think if u knew what u know now, u cud've done a lot better and taken a diff route?
I'm asking this cuz i wanna set a baseline of skills to attain by the time i graduate. Been researching and the amount of things u can learn is very intimidating to me11 -

1) shitpost on DevRant about how much 'X' is better than Java
2) read the official docs1 -

Hello, everybody! Recently, I've decided to switch from Android development to web-development, mainly JavaScript. Ok, it is clear what to do and what to learn in frontend part. But what about backend? I have a some kind of a dream to learn Go. It is clear language it is a great pleasure to write on it, and I've started to learn it. In parallel I'm trying to study JS + Angular... Well, now I have some douts: is it effective to learn two different languages, which are quite new to me? Maybe, I should learn Node.js instead of Go? Right now it is clear, that this technology (node) is much more demanded. What path should I choose? To follow heart and learn Go? To follow mainstream trend and learn Node.js?1

Overcome the fact that even though I'm starting to be really good at what I'm doing, someone will be better at what I do, and there are always new things to learn from anything. And instead of crying on my own lack of skills, don't waste time and learn from these guys who are better1

So I've made this plan of what I'm gonna learn/practice/study programming wise. Some of it involves learning new languages and I'm always told i shouldnt be hopping between languages but I really want to learn fucking PHP and C# even fucking C to help my python and it's not like its overwhelming but I hate when I get told to not bounce between languages IVE BEEN USING PYTHON FOR A YEAR AND A HALF I THINK ITS TIME FOR ME TO POLISH MY JAVASCRIPT AND LEARN A FEW MORE LANGAUGES LIEK FUCK3

I have started to learn Python and have ventured to the usual places to try and learn. Udemy, YouTube, Mimo app, and Programming Hub app.
I'm familiar with programming languages like c#, and JavaScript but have never become proficient in any of them. I'm hoping I can change that with Python.
Im looking for anything I can get. Advice, links, books, not sure what else there is. If it will help me learn and hopefully retain the info than I'm all for it.
Cheers15 -
When learning something new, say a new language or framework, do you go through the docs or tutorials, or do you just learn by doing and figure it out as you go?
I like to learn by doing and getting a finished project and start modding and changing stuff. what do you guys do?17 -

Give up trying to change CS education since current formal education systems used since the prehistoric times are unable to teach CS properly. Instead, tell the students from day 1: "What you'll learn is either already outdated or will be outdated by the time you graduate. Be ready to learn stuff by yourselves or switch your major."

Hey DevRanters.
I'm currently a PHP Developer and I want to learn a new language soon.
I have thought about learning .Net or C# or something third?
At the moment I'm also working with NodeJS and have a basic knowledge about that, should I just continue mastering that?
What should I go with? I don't really care much about how much money it can give and so on, just wanting to learn more :D15 -

I have no explict application, which bothers me a lot.3 -

Is it worthy to learn both?6 -
I think it really depends on the person attending (why they want to be a developer, how they learn, their ability to apply what they learn etc) I think these bootcamps serve a good purpose by making helping people achieve their goals. I will say that pop culture has set some pretty unrealistic standards for what it is like being a developer, and a lot of the bootcamps are propagating that misconception

So the other day, an old acquaintance asks me (a noob full stack dev) for advice on what programming langs to languages to learn.
I (like all other noobs eager to help) asked him about his previous programming skills, if any. He says "Yes yes, I did a course on HTML and CSS." To this I ask, what exactly are you looking to do. Back-end development he says.
I am frustrated with people asking me what to learn and how to learn when they are not even willing to do slightest of the work themselves. I am usually very helpful to people, but as a programmer, I would certainly try to do a complete research before I go around asking others.
What do you guys do? How do you handle such questions.4 -
