One of my favorite aspects of devRant has always been getting to learn more about the awesome people who use it. Beyond just the awesome stories posted by many here, one of my favorite ways to learn about and feel connected to the people here has always been desk/setup reveals. I personally love seeing different kinds of setups from all over the world, knowing that’s what the people here use to do their work and compute in general.
As an experiment, we want to try a few different things to highlight desk/setup/remote coding location posts. First, we’ve created the first devRant Instagram account, which is completely focused on developer desks/setups/workstations/remote coding. Please check it out here and follow: https://www.instagram.com/devdesks/
I want to use the account to bring more attention to the wide assortment of setups the awesome members of the devRant community post from all over the world. We’ll promote cool desk/setup/remote work images that are posted on devRant to the Instagram account for more exposure/additional audience.
Beyond that, I also want to try to come up with a way to better organize all of the desk/setup posts on devRant and encourage more of them. One kind we don’t see that often that I personally really enjoy is people coding with their laptops in locations that show the culture of their country or something special about the region they are from. Personally, I’m going to try to post some of those for where I live and work.
So how can you help with this effort? It’s easy! We encourage people to post their setups/working remotely pics and we will start featuring them on the Instagram account and hopefully elsewhere in the devRant app for some increased visibility/searchabilty over what we have now (since pics are kind of hard to search).
Also, we plan to make the weekly rant this week “post your setup,” so maybe wait until then to post, and you can work now on getting that awesome shot :) I know a lot of people here love photography like I do, so I think that part is fun too.
Please let me know if you have any ideas or questions about this, and I’m looking forward to seeing the desks/setups of many more devRanters in the next few days!
P.S. not a requirement, but one thing I think makes these photos better looking through a lot of them is when there is code visible in some way.48
Hey everyone! @trogus and I are headed to TechDay New York tomorrow (May 10) and there will be a devRant booth in the social network section. If any devRanters are attending, you should definitely stop by our booth! There will be free swag and we’d love to meet some fellow ranters!37
I love how the people on here are pretty much always nice.
Yes, there are some *wink AlexDeLarge* who use strong language, some dirty jokes and sometimes there are topics where people don't agree on but I've never seen any honest insults or toxic behaviour (other than the opinion on your shitty client or boss lol).
No annoying trolls (the nearest to a troll I know on here is Jase but he's fun and mostly welcome here).
No spam/ads from users (only maybe recommendations).
And the most unbelievable thing is that devRant itself is free, adfree and based on the community voluntary donating for the server and work costs.
Dude, devRant fucking rules.13
TL;DR: Got a really horrible supervisor temporarily fired, maybe permanently fired, got a laptop, and realized that senior devs are amazing when they stand up for the little guys
Omg... I love my coworkers!!! So like, I'm an incredibly shy dev, like, I only managed to get my internship purely because of my familiarity with c#, Android/UWP app development (although never apple, which you can read about in my last rant lol), and the API Management framework that they were using, so, long stories short, I'm insanely shy and I get anxious quite quickly in social situations, that'll be important in a bit. Anyways, so, in my previous rant (my first one actually, it was "that" bad...) I had a run-in with a rather unfair supervisor situation where he expected me to work on an iOS app without a Mac machine.
So, this is currently a little bit before my shift end, where I'm anxiously trying to get a MacOS VM up and running to be able to copy paste some psudo-code so as not to get in trouble, which is when the senior dev of the team walks by and sees me tearing hair out of my head and being really sad. So what does this god amongst men do?
He comes over and asks me what I'm doing.
Now, I didn't actually notice him, so when he asked me, I was insanely jumpy and scared that my supervisor would appear and be mad at me for not having things done, so I kind of half scream half yelp when he says something, so now he knows somethings up and he acts kind of like I'm an injured deer and slowly asks what's going on.
So, of course I tell him everything that had happened and how the supervisor got really mad about me not being able to develop iOS apps due to not having a Mac, and his expectation of me to get it magically working and getting to work on my module, and the selenium portal automatization, and after a couple seconds of me rapid fire nervous squirrel-like explanation, he holds up a hand and says "He what?!!!!? God dammit, how the hell are you supposed to do that? Jesus, you were supposed to get a company laptop when you got here, where's that??? And if you don't have that then how the hell were you working on the cross platform portion? You need a Mac machine for that, so let me get this straight... You've been frantically trying to find a workaround so that AS (let's call him AS for asshat supervisor (missing an s)) doesn't get mad at you... Who the hell... And this fuckers in charge of the interns??"
He was incredibly pissed off at this point, like, REALLY pissed off... But-
This man had just spoken miracles to me.
So I do what any self respecting intern would do, I start cry laughing and hug said BSD for a quick second (badass senior developer), and I say yep, pretty much ;-;.
And queue AS walking into my workspace and saying
AS- "are you done with the iOS a..."
BSD- "You've got to be kidding me, shut up for a second and sit down"
AS- "?" *Sits*
Me- *hides in corner and cinches up hoodie*
BSD- "Excuse me, but what did you ask benlion to do?"
AS- "Um, I simply told him to start working on the Xamarin app"
BSD- "Yes, but according to benlion, you angrily told him to start working on the Mac portion... Let me ask you something first, why would you do that? It's rude and inappropriate to be hostile to anyone at the workplace, in fact, if he wants to pursue to matter, you can get demoted, actually, if he wants to pursue it, you're fired, and there's no way I'm letting you get a management job again"
AS -"Wow, did benlion really say that? He's obviously lying due to his dislike for me, BSD, it's rather unfair to take his word over his superv..."
BSD-"Oh you did NOT just go there. That's it, stay here. And benlion, come with me." *Points at me*
Me- *Terrified out of my mind, almost to the point of a nervous breakdown because of the argument that I had started* "O-okay o_O"
Long stories short, we come back with his supervisor and he is now relieved of his duties temporarily while this whole thing gets settled...
Oh, and I get my Apple Laptop tomorrow ^-^ so I'm really happy, albeit kind of sad that its my fault that AS doesn't have a job right now ;-;, but he did yell at me and expect incredibly impossible things of me, so, not as bad as I might feel.25
Have a great working week guys! I will spent it on the beach with my devRant t-shirt! Locals love it!16
5 reasons I love devRant
1. I can't understand the point of Facebook. And it has such a shitty UI, but devRant has a beautiful despite it is complete JS
2. It doesnt have 140 char limit.
3. It is 99% english.
4. Trolls and script kiddies are rare here.
5. It is fairly lightweight.
1 reason I hate devRant
1. Total waste of time.16
Two reasons why I love devRant.
1. None of my clients are here so I can say what I want.
2. Everyone gets my geeky ass jokes that usually only I laugh at.5
I am done with people, I just want one single room, with good internet, dual monitor setup... And I can spend my whole life like that... Being social, fuck that shit... I have devRant for that... and rest, I just want to code, listen to music, drink coffee and sleep like hell...
Why is it that I can understand some other dev's code faster that understanding someone's feelings. Why is it that I am good with principles of Programming Languages, but not the basic Principles of Humanity... Yes, I agree I don't have feelings, but is it wrong not to have feelings, I am a dev, I am supposed to be good with Codes, not humans... I want to be in my small space of close people. (My family), and that's it... I am no good with others. I hate Facebook, but love devRant, I spend more time on StackOverflow than that on WhatsApp. Why is it so... Why29
I love how "minimal" devRant is.
No username, no time... just the number of likes and number of comments ..
*it's a feature not a bug*
I just realized 1/4th of devRant has tried devRantron ✌
I just wanted to thank everyone, this has been an amazing experience and I've learnt a lot from it. We have some really cool features comming down the pipeline.
I love all of you ♥️14
Ever since I joined devRant, I've been the most motivated I've been in the past 3 years to work on my personal projects and learn new stuff
I freakin love you folks 💞2
What I love about DevRant is that it doesn't only serve me as a relatable, sometimes funny as hell timeline. But I also learn small bits and pieces from all around it amidst the rants.
I just wanted to thank the devs for such an amazing app.
May all our projects be as successful as yours.2
other website/app: here, upload a picture as your avatar
devrant: here, have this rpg like builder with plenty options, with everything from the shirt to the glasses and unlocks based on upvotes
i love this app5
Alright, since the organizer for the European devRant meetup canceled it (let's not get butthurt/hating etc), I'd love to (with the help of some other people) organize one myself since I was really looking forward to it!
Question would be, who'd be up for it?
Location would most likely be Germany since that's the most central point.
I'd love to hear from you all!58
This is where everything started. I got the chance to work with actual production code. While it is very fun to work with, in some places it's also very frustrating. And this is from where, most of my rants come from.
Thank you @dfox and @trogus for making such a beautiful community.
The best part of this community is I never have to think or take time to make jokes or posts so that I can get upvotes. I've always wanted likes or retweets or reddit upvotes. But it never worked out because I have to think so much to make clever comments or posts. Most of the time, I gave up.
But in devRant, all I do is just share what's happening in my daily dev life. My frustrations, my happiness. That's all it takes. Everyone understands, everyone cares and everyone loves.
Over time, thanks to devRant, I've understood that I was part of the wrong community. This is the community that I deserve, this is the community that every dev deserves.
Thank you all. I love you. And I promise, more rants are coming :D
Especial thanks to @Yeah69 @kevbost @yarwest @tisaconundrum @Linux @donkeyScript . I have no idea why you guys all of a sudden rapidly upvoted me. Although I would love to reach 10k naturally but won't complain haha8
Roommate: I thought you aren't into social media...
Me: This is devRant, it's different.
Roommate: How so.
Me: It's for like minds, very well structured and has this fun feature which let's me create myself as a cartoon for my profile pic.
Me: (walks into the room) Why are you laughing and why are you using my phone.
Roommate: I THINK I LOVE THIS APP. I might actually download it.
Note: Roommate is a musician who studied CS in school.7
How i got to devRant.
Boss comes in, sees me super chill.
Other people enter, boss sees me not chill.
Sends me an email and says "Enjoy".
I love this guy :')
Ps. Hope he doesn't expect work today8
*Just got a package delivered, didn't check yet*
Friend: who sends you stuff from from the USA?
I (excited as fuck): uh it must be my
Friend: your what?
I explain, he walks away not giving a fuck.
But I don't care what he thinks, i love my new devDucks. Oh and special thanks to @dfox for the autograph. Well technically you just signed the customs declaration, but an autograph none the less.3
A story of love, loss, and devRant.
My favorite sunglasses were a victim of hurricane Irma. They were sitting on the park bench when a powerful gust of wind blew them onto the cement floor, where both lenses were fucked right where I look out of them. I bought these sunglasses at Disney with my family and have not stopped wearing them since. I was pretty upset.
Enter devRant. Sad and without sunglasses, I hoped that virtual ones might suffice. Lo and fucking behold, in the profile editor, there they were: my exact sunglasses, even with the choice between silver and gold. Absolutely fucking perfect. Made my day.10
Why I love devRant:
You'll never receive bad or degrading comments.
If I post a picture of my hairy ass here, the comments would be like:
"There are good sides of having excessive hair."13
I am on DevRant for quite a while now and I really enjoy it here. The overall atmosphere is great, as well as the community. (Yes, that includes you!)
Since I came here I've learned some very valuable lessons regarding work (conditions), annoying coworkers and programming itself. I like to think of DevRant as a huge ball of experience by very talented people, as well as a great place for discussions about a topic we all love: code. But lately I am seeing more and more memes on here, with titles like "I think everybody know this", "I think everybody can relate" and "Soo true". Those posts have no value at all and are (most of the time) reposted from 9gag or similar networks. Sometimes those "rants" don't even have anything to do with devs anymore, but are only here to farm ++'es. In the beginning I really enjoyed funny "rants", but now the majority of them just annoy me. It becomes especially annoying when you see the same meme three times in 15 minutes.
I'd be in for some kind of DevFun section, where everybody is able to post his or hers jokes/memes/etc, but the current situation just really gets on my nerves.
I hope that I am not the only one who thinks like that, because I really feel uncomfortable ranting about something I actually love.
After the backlash I received from some devRant users about my text formatting, here is a properly formatted, and properly punctuated rant.
You see... It's boring.12
I love how DevRant is evolving!
It started only to rant.
Now people can make questions, celebrate accomplishments, talk about their problems, memes, etc...
Deamn! I'm loving DevRant more and more! 🤗7
I seriously love Devrant. I think I have been missing this for all my life! seriously. who ever wrote this is a genius. I love this.8
What I do when I sit down to work:
Get a cup of coffee or tea,
Sit down open up some music; rock if I'm feeling okay or slow jazz if I'm feeling anxious,
Open my text editor (Atom, I love it so much),
Open git desktop,
Look at what was my last commit,
Remember where I left off,
Look blankly at code for a few minutes,
Then I pull up phone and start writing stupid shit like this on devrant.11
Why I love devRant? Cause it redirects me to my good old browser after clicking on a link instead of open such a f*****g build in shit!5
If y'all need a lil help with clients and conversating, here's my personal way of ending conversations. Just acknowledge it! (If all else fails, take things into consideration)
Friend: I hear that the most viewed youtube video ever is now despacito
> I acknowledge that
Co-worker: I love my new shoes!
> I acknowledge that
Hot girl: hey sexy, you're looking fine today
> I acknowledge that
Client: hey could you add x?
Sibling: you're adopted
> I acknowledge that
Windows: I will update
> I will take that into consideration
trogus: I will make a line of debugging ducks with capes with their respective language on it
dfox: I acknowledge that
Bus driver: sir please wake up the busses are closed
> I acknowledge that *sleeps*
Python: wrong amount of tabs/spaces
> I acknowledge that *uninstalls python*
devRant: you are running out of characters for this rant
> I ackno12
Since I discovered devRant, looks like I stopped using instagram, Facebook and Twitter.
I love this community so much!!
It even has functions facebook and instagram doesn’t have!
Thank you @dfox and all the others! Hope it continues like this!
I haven't met many people through programming but I've met many friends through devRant but certainly also through being a Linux (server) enthusiast.
At study I found some good Linux guys and now through devRant I've gotten some awesome linuxers and privacy/security like minded people who I definitely see as great friends!
Also I find it awesome that I can actually teach people stuffs that I love researching about/ doing myself!9
I love devRant. But the people constantly saying "Python is shit" OR "Windows is for idiots" OR "Never use C it's ancient" OR "Microsoft sucks" OR any other fucking subjective opinion that's absolutely worthless drive me crazy.
I see many people here asking "Should I do [option1] or [option2]?" And the only responses are "[option3 which is not a fucking option you degraded fuck who thinks his/her opinions somehow matter in this discussion while they are clearly NOT helping]"
Sorry but this place has "Rant" in it's name so I thought this would be appropriate.22
Just wanna say I fucking LOVE..
... Open source
... GPL & MIT License
... more stuff
... TDDR (Too Dunk, Don’t Remember)
Most of us are complaining / ranting way more often about development and technology than we do appreciate it..
Just look at our great and unique community..
Im often angry but right now I remember how great the dev community is and I love it:)4
There are a lot of people hating on Microsoft (C#, .Net ...) in devRant. And there are a lot praising StackOverflow, linux and opensource.
I wonder how it makes them feel that stackoverflow is built on .Net and C# and is not open source!
Btw, I love linux too, I just don't hate the other operating systems(companies).15
I just installed VSCode for the first time yesterday; running on a MacBook. I spent the early hours of the day working on my C++ project on there. Moving to the workspace was really, really easy; I haven’t had the best of experience with Visual Studio.
VSCode is so clean and light. I love the extensions they have for different languages; I’ve only tried the C/C++ one at the moment. I also love the fact that you can create json preference files for shell/process tasks and also for launching different kinds of debug sessions.
It has a fully functional, built-in terminal. And at this moment, I’m looking to fork the code from GitHub to try and see if I can add something that’s been bugging me since yesterday.
One of the many nice things I’ve gotten from devRant since I joined. Thanks folks.10
devRant, I love you.
You suggested I learn Java & Nodejs. I decided to jump straight into node & it's just great. I haven't done much, just a mini blockchain and played with packages, but I'm having a lot of fun with node.15
What's your favorite console ? I love my switch, it is portable, has great games and HOMEBREWS.
I've been wanting to start making stuff on it for a while but didn't want to get banned, finally it's possible so here it is my first project : a Devrant client for switch !
It took me a bit cause i was unexperienced with the platform and there are a few technical issues i had to workaround ( like no support for ssl rn and devrant api is only https :/ ) but nevertheless it's here. I'm happy now.13
I just started to use Fira Code as my main font because another awesome user recommended it and I must say, this shit is beautiful. This is what I love about this community. I learn more and get to know more cool shit because of what users say in here than the 5 years I spent at uni. You ninjas rock!7
tl;dr: thanks! :)
I just love this community.
The idea of devRant is great. The emotions, the shared knowledge in each post. Never seen such densely packed quality content in a social media! :D
I enjoy spending my time here, though I do not post that much. Reading just about the life of @linuxxx, @gitpush @alexDeLarge (to name a few) share with us is just wonderful, it makes me happy! :)
I think this post is meant as a thank you, I guess? Just felt like it... hope you guys don't mind having read a non-dev related post.^^'
@dfox and @trogus, you guys are awesome as fuck!4
Feature request for @dfox:
Swiping for rants:
Left = nay, right = yay
Match making via rants for devSingles.
Just kidding! I love devRant the way it is. It's the best app. Probably the best of all. It's huge. You'll like it.7
I hope Desks of devRant is still a thing because..
I BUILT MY OWN (｡♡‿♡｡)
My dad helped me with the metal work. I build the wooden plate myself and I think it looks beautiful.
Also my devDucks and my little bongo cat support me. As well as my real cats which now have more space to annoy me.
I love this table ( ˘ ³˘)♥11
No Rant, just wanted to say devRant is something I have been looking for in a long time, Love it !3
I really love how devrant changed from a "place where developer s could post rants about technology " to " A loving , considerate , helping out place where every dev is welcome "4
I forced myself to use git on my latest projects. And the more I use it, the more I love it. I can relate to all the git-love here on devRant.21
My world of devRant just lit up:
Did you know:
1) you get free stickers it a rant hits 30++ (you need to write a mail)
2) they have a YouTube channel with cartoons which are hilarious!!!!! I fucking love the sound effects 😍 since they r based on real rants it’s even better!
Shoutout to the YouTube channel!13
devRant is the first time I see so many people announcing to the world how much they like the app. Imagine someone be like "I LOVE Facebook! <3"
Btw, I LOVE devRant! <33
After only using linux (Linux Mint) for a week I have to say I absolutely fucking love it. 😍 One big thank you to everyone who has contributed to it, I don't think I will ever change to another operating system again (I will change distros of course).
Open source, wohooo!
I am in love with vim as well. :)
Also one big thank you to the devRant community and all the nice people I have met here :)16
after using devRant for about 4 days... i absolutely love it!
bye reddit, on mobile.
Joined devRant a week ago...I use it almost all the time... Can't even think about uninstalling it...It feels like all my brothers in arms are here....I love this new home.4
So guys and gurls...
I'm a member of devRant for about 1.5 weeks now. I already have over 130 likes on my rants in total about things I was never able to post without being labeled a nerd. I literally love you guys! Thanks to @dfox and @trogus for making it possible for us to discuss things that matter for us!7
I wrote a song
Don't judge me
To the tune of "Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer"
dfox and trogus
Had a very good idea
They worked on it
And out popped devRant
Then one foggy Friday night
They published it
It was an instant hit
Devs everywhere rejoyced
Now the devs love them
As they type out their rants
dfox and trogus
You'll go down in dev history!
(Like Linus Torvalds!)7
It's f-ing 2018.
We are generating electricity out of thin air.
We are generating it through light.
We are generating it through flowing water.
We can generate it when humans freaking move.
We can freaking feel the virtual stuff(latest SmarterEveryday upload).
But we still have freaking powercuts 😤😖😠😭.
P.S. : I Love you, you beautiful devrant people😊. My headache disappeared after reading a few rants😁.7
Just joined devRant! Can't wait to get more involved!
Bored in the lockdown, I built an app which lets you chat with people around you.
Its called Cyrcl!
Built in over ~40 days, I was the sole developer.
Here is the tech stack - React native for the android and ios apps, mongodb and redis for the database, nodejs for the server and aws ec2 for the hosting!
I'd love to get some feedback, or discuss some of the hacks!
I just wanted to say how much I freaking love this place. I come here every day, and what I find is a magical community of people who are accepting of everyone, supportive of each others hopes and dreams and sympathize with those struggling with jobs or school or just life in general. DevRant honestly makes the world a better place, at least for me. Thank you @dfox and @trogus for this beautiful Eden!3
Lol, love you devrant3
Back in the days DevRant used to be a small community. A rant would be seen by all, with a higher chance of marking the stress ball incentive target.
Now, those upvotes are distributed among many more users who have the privilege of upvoting to what they find more interesting.
However, this is not a rant about who has a better chance of winning a stress ball; it's about feeling proud how this community grew so healthy, and tailor made for developers!! :)
Kudos! I love this community7
Just realized that this app and community is the perfect example of a rule-less functional online community, it has everything that people would mostly believe drama occurs but no drama
Anonymity, relaxed rules, huge base, long reaching form of social media, yet it's possibly the most Las online community I've ever seen *knock on wood*6
Hi, I'm new to devRant. That's perfect because I love to rant about everything.
So, let this be my first rant:
Apache Velocity + last minute rush + heatwave - climatisation = Hello Migraine my old friend...10
THX for 500++ !!! I'm so happy I found devRant by exident. I love reading rants and sometimes post my own stories.
PS: Now I can wear my JS Shirt and drink Red bull like in rl 😂 Thx again!25
One thing I love in devRant is the avatar design. Everytime I open up a rant, the replies below with avatars look exactly a group of developers talking in a bar.
It just visually makes me comfortable.6
The devRant community seems to hate everything I love in coding xD
However, we all still relate to the same rants ;)
Guys Christmas and new year is behind the door and i would love to thanks to everyone on devRant for making this community even more awesome then it was. i remember when i started at devRant it was little community and i got my first +1 (they're called +1 now its ++) it was awesome the first ++ from @dfox i was like wooooooooowwwwww and after some time i was at 500++ then 1000 and so on yeah really nice community guys so thank you all in here very much and Merry Christmas and Happy new year !!!!!2
Just realized that I am not at +1000 points and I must say...well. That I really like this community. Being able to talk to other people with similar interests helps me get through the day in ways that I cannot describe. Where I am from there aren't that many developers at all and those that exist around do not have the experience, talent, or knowledge that the user base here has. This is a diverse group, with people comming from different backgrounds and tech stacks and I learn a lot from each and every one of you. Thanks guys for giving me a place to be at when software gets crazy. Cheers to you all magnificent basterds, and to the awesome gentlemen that built my favorite app ever!! You guys rock!2
I miss devRant YouTube cartoons :(
We will be seing more in the future? Gosh i love watching the rants come to life4
I just ordered some stressballs & stickers from devRant, eventhough I would have earned free stickers by now.
I just think they deserve this support! I love this app and I'm really looking forward to some good stress relief. :)3
Want to hide this devRant apps on android but how?
Because everytime my wife see this devRant, she say, wtf this app? So many bad word, so many "fuck", you must avoid see bad words too much ,she said. Lol its true but still happy to see it, because its damn true. I love to see people say the truth20
Loving rantBlock 🙂
I just re-enabled it to show a friend... I really do some of my best work at 2am 😂
This collab is still (to the best of my knowledge) the most popular collab on devRant. I ranted a while back that it's open to anyone who wants to get involved to work on production version to publish to mozilla, google etc. Personally I would love to build the rant replacement functionality into a fork of uBlock but I simply don't have the time at the moment - so if your looking for a side project...
Collab LInk: https://devrant.com/collabs/...3
Its been a few hours, and i was busy with meetings but
THANK Y'ALL FOR 10K ++
I remember wk20something, when i joined devrant. I was just starting a job as a data analyst, and the wk at that time spoke to me on a personal level, so i wrote a quick rant and didnt give it much thought. The next day i opened devrant and had like 100++s and a bunch of comments. Since then ive met a lot of awesome people here and im happy i clicked the install button back then. Thanks cfox and brogus for the opportunity, love ya.
Already got a longboard as a 10k-day gift :^)2
Not a rant, just a tought:
I was thinking, how amazing is to work at software industry, I mean, is there any other field of work where you can start without knowing little to nothing of the thing you are going to work with?
Got hired to work with a friend of mine in his uncle's company, started as a technician, providing support to clients, after that, started coding little windows applications using c#, even tought, I didn't know shit about it, time passed and we needed a mobile application, then when I realized I was already coding for Android in Java even though I didn't know nothing about it too.
It's just, you can do whatever you want if you will... It's amazing! I love doing what I do.
recently people have been worried about what people were going to say I.e "no hate" , don't hold back!
In devrant we only mean light hearted banter if we are pissed we don't want to hurt you we are pissed at a thing and not directly at you. Not that I speak for dfox or trogus but I'm sure that's what they are going for, and it's what ive seen!
We are nice here... This isn't YouTube , it's a credit to devs we are nice people. Hell it isn't stack overflow!
Also I'm brutally honest at times but I love you really.10
I don't even care about getting upvotes with rage rants. It's just very nice to have a place where I can out all my rage and anger and where people actually understand me instead of staring at me like 'woah, calm down'. I feel like I'm actually understood here, something I don't often have irl. This is why I f*cking love devRant.1
I'm getting the sense that the devRant algo somehow thinks I love seeing rubber duck memes every 3 posts...2
I finally got my tiger !!!!!!!!!!!
Big thanks to realKC and our Bluenutterfly for their ++.
I was waiting for this tiger so long :))))))
I fucking love devRant !!!!!!!! :))))5
This community is the most mixed thing ever, I love it
In my opinion it's the good side of devrant in one image4
I personally feel that most social networks like Facebook are a source of depression for this generation. It's a known fact that "instant gratification", as we call it, it's slowly destroying the mental health of young minds. Do you think devRant is slowly becoming something like that? I see people only posting memes, popular jokes, or self-praising posts these days (no offence). I truly love devRant for what it is, and I don't want it to become another generic social media platform (even though it's within the developer community) :(2
Might be nothing for others, but I finally published my Vue website with the following setup:
1. Vue inside docker
2. Nodejs API inside docker
3. MongoDB inside docker
4. Nginx as reverse proxy
5. Let's Encrypt
6. NO I WILL NOT SHARE THE LINK, don't want to be hacked lol and it is for personal use only.
But I'd love to thank devRant members who have helped me reach this point, two months ago I was a complete noob in Vue and a beginner in NodeJs services, now I have my own todo website customized for my needs.
Thank you :)26
I have many stickers on my laptop, need some more to complete the selection. Would love to see devRant on here! Help me reach the goal? Suggestions as to what else to add?8
In the next 40 years devRant will be non-existential because developers wont be there anymore, you know why?
AI takes over the world.. writes its own code and build new products.
- Elon Musk
(personally, I love this guy)22
I hope this year will be as meaningful as this year was... and the best thing happened to me was coming to devrant and having support, warmth and love from you guys.
love ya all8
I've had my wallet for a good 5/6 years. I love it. It's getting old. So much so I was about to go look for a new trusty pocket friend, however, thanks to devRant it now has a new lease of life... Well, hopefully for a few more months at least. 😪4
Am I the only one who thinks DevRant should have a proper desktop website instead of just making us navigate in a stretched out version of the mobile app?
Don't get me wrong, I love this place, but a desktop website would sure be nice! :D7
Greetings everyone. I'm new here and also a beginner in programming. I just stumble upon the devRant and found myself entertained thus I've decided to log myself in. I'm quite a lost soul out here and still not sure if the path that I'm taken right now is the right one. Not that I don't enjoy it but sometimes it just get too frustrated and overbearing with all those "cryptic alien" codes that I'm trying to learn. I love to code but... sigh~ I never rant to anyone before since I'm quite a shy person and rather keep it in. So I try to rant it here. I guess that will make my frustration out of my chest? PS:English is not my native. I love the interface design. It's so cute. Not sure if this rant will be the first and last. I might regret this and will just continue to dwell behind the internet shadow.24
Thank god there are no Community Moderators on devRant... I just fucking have StackOverflow/Quora, they just don't let a newbie rise on those platforms... I love this place though.6
Friend asked me which site do i like the most. Well ofcourse i told devRant. But then he asked second page. And the page i love to the single bit is phoronix. This site is just amazing. All the new stuff reviewed before i even know its out. AMDVLK surely seems great.
Man, as much as I love reaping the benefits of Continuous Integration, I sure fucking despise having to set it up.
By the way, hi devRant!4
I love using DevRant and i am also a frequent visitor of sites like TechCrunch and ReCode. What other sites or apps would you recommend for devs or tech geeks??8
!rant #meta: I registered just yesterday and woke up this morning with 44 notifications, which is great because this community is obviously refreshingly active, plus I really love getting notifications. Nevertheless, is it really necessary to create an individual notification for EVERY SINGLE +1?! Dear devRant devs, I love what you're doing. But please, PLEASE, merge/group these notifications into just a few. I don't want to go through every single one of these, it's just cluttering my notification list. I always just clear the list and then use the in-app bell symbol to navigate to whatever item I'm interested in. I can't be the only one.5
@trogus it would be pretty rad to have an avatar option that would add a devRant sticker to a laptop.
btw: I love the Rubik's cube chillin with the rubber ducking debugger.3
So I was thinking.
Everybody here knows sites that mine some currency with your PC for the dev without you knowing (Yeah sure 100% CPU).
Its not cool and they still show Ads on the fucking site.
But now imagine this the site you love the most (except devRant) give you this option:
They will clearly say that they are mining but only 20% of your CPU and for return you will not see ads on the page.
What do you think ?
Let the discussion begin !12
Now I can afford myself a duck on my desk :-). I love devRant it's so addictive. I have the app as well. This thing is like WhatsApp for developers on steroids. Forgive my ignorance what are those pluses called anyway?5
Thanks everyone for showing your love for devRant Community! I really appreciate all of those who shared their desk setup pictures here 🙌🏼 Stay tuned & keep ranting 🤗11
Just got the darkest mode on devRant and it’s fucking amazing.
The medium darkness looked so gross that I used the whitess mode until I felt like I was blinded by the light and got the darkest theme instead.
My eyes thank me, my bank account doesn’t.😂6
I like devRant because it's like 9gag, but with more relatable stuff, great community and I think that I learn a thing or two by being here. I love it :)
devRant broke my relationship.
I am being commanded to put "I love my girlfriend" in my bio to scare away all the 'women' that are apparently on here9
Is DevRant anonymous? Now that I said it I'm afraid to leave my house8
I just fucking love the feature of "click outside the textbox and lose all you wrote" on devrant, keeps my blood boiled just right. I am counting every second until the new webapp is supposedly coming 😢7
Love devRant! Where can I donate to help keep the Devs supplied with adequate redbull and dorritoes?5
I got this new job last month, but don't really have much work allotted. So I decided to make some productive use of my time:
Its a library for devrant in go.
would love some love, feedback/pull-requests 😄5
I've pulled the third all-nighter in a row because of a ridiculous bug in legacy spaghetti..
I finally kicked its ass so I can now emerge from my cave, feeling like both a lifeless zombie and someone who got reanimated after half a week.
You all helped me through this tough time, love you all devRant ♥
Devrant: the only place where people don't post links to porn unless it is not actually related to the porn.3
Oh no! What have I done? I opened up devRant at 8:00am and it's now 9:55am. This is literally my biggest time sink and I love it.
!rant XOR !rant
I have been using devrant for a while now and have finally decided to create an account. That is all I have to say really. I rarely have anything to rant so instead I will just be ++ away.
P.S @linuxxx you are awesome and I love reading your rants.16
I love you devRant
I'm heading to bed here pretty quickly, but before I lay down I just wanted to say something.
I've been a long time lurker, but have just recently registered as a member. Whenever I get a chance to, I have the urge to open up devRant and take a scroll through recent posts. You guys are the best, and give me something to chuckle at. It's just really great and refreshing to find a community that is supportive, and full of so many inspiring people. It's like Shangri-La - the hidden community that you always knew existed, but could never find2
I just became a supporter of devRant!
I fucking love this place, and feel I've spent enough time here already to make it worthwhile...don't think I'm going anywhere anytime soon.
In unrelated news, Markey's CRA for net neutrality just needs one more vote to get started on the next hurdle. That said, I had a dream last night about Ajit Pai becoming fucking Jim Jones and poisoning us all...and to wake up the next day and find out about a potential antidote being successful is awesome!!!
Fat heavy D&B beats, basement bunker, dark ambiente, stroboscope, sweaty bodies dancing. It happens:
I'm scrollin devRant drunk, again.12
I'm new into Java and tried creating a simple GUI.
Took me about 3 hours until i've found out that I must put a JTextArea into a JScollPane and not the other way around to display the textarea with a working scrollbar.
I love this already.
(I'm also a new devRant user, so... Hey :] !)6
I love the fact that once you pass enough time in DevRant you begin to identify people rants and comments by their avatars. Anyone else has that reflex or my brain's RAM is just taken by chrome and it is easier for me to just remember some pixels? xD2
Whoa, I was about a two months away from devRant and when I came back people are trying to make PHP as the new Nickelback for programming? That's just unfair, with both of them. I love Nickelback. I love PHP. PHP was my very first language that I started to study around 11 years ago, when I was just 12. PHP made me get my first job and introduced me to a world where I decided to create my own company, a comic book network. PHP led me to my current path, which I deeply love what I do and I fortunately employ 12 people, which are not even coders! See? One language indirectly affected the life of 12 families. Yes, I discovered new languages that I currently have more fun using like nodejs, but that doesn't mean that PHP sucks. Free and unfounded hate sucks.2
Refreshing devRant on a Friday night... I should feel lame but I think I just love devs (and ranting)
I've got two new desk buddies that'll hopefully make this winter a little more bearable during finals.
I love the devRant community. Thanks for the ++'s everyone!1
I love devRant.
So there I am on the devRant website, busy clicking through options I haven't checked before; I click on "Settings", then the options "Logout" and "Delete Account" appear.
It just so happens that when the options came up, the mouse is hovering over the "Delete Account" button, at the thought of such my mind was like - Ahh! Nooo!3
DISCLAIMER: I'm not paid nor have I had any contact with any associates of the following software.
GET FUCKING VIVALDI!!!
This Browser has DAMN NICE MOUSE GESTURES!
You do them while holding right click.
For example right click held and swipe/moving the mouse to the left/right brings you backward/forward.
There are several others and you can make them by your self.
Just browsing anything. IT'S FUCKING DAMN FAST.
INSTALL VIVALDI AND ENABLE MOUSE GESTURES! After aprox 3 Days you won't want to have any other browser anymore.
(Could've just simply said that I love the browser because of that feature. But this is DevRANT!)16
I love the irony that the devrant stress ball my co-worker just received is the beginning of my stress.... bounce bounce bounce AHHHH!2
My rant is that I low key hate devRant.
I'm 23, I'm an average software engineer, with some expertise in machine learning and with a decent job.
But seeing all your cool stories, skills and rants makes me feel like I don't know shit and everyone else is just more driven, skillful and passionate, taking care of a 1000 pet projects at a time and dominating their work routine.
Oh impostor syndrome, how I've missed you!
P.S.: I still love your rants, keep them coming.3
So, maybe 6 hours ago or so, I was randomly browsing Github and stuff, came across https://git.io/vABiT in the Trending page. "Hell yeah, I'd go for some swag".
Started looking through them all, eventually found myself here on devRant. Instantly fell in love, it's the perfect mix of jokes, puns, and rants. Now it's 5 AM and I've got work at 10... Worth it, for sure!
Anyways, hello guys, glad to have found this place, really loving the feel of it all.5
brainfuck - your next programming language. A simple tutorial
Output: "I love devrant. Do you?"
Output: "And your brain is fucked. Or it isn't?"
Wanna play with it?
Text to brainfuck: https://copy.sh/brainfuck/text.html
Brainfuck to text:
Oh my God I didn't even noticed I crossed 1000++ in just 2 weeks of newly activated me! Over 400++ in fucking 2 WEEEKKKSS!!!
THANK YOU GUYS I LOVE YOU8
know what is worst than fucking clients from hell?
fucking websites that need a mortherfucking good spec computer to run. i cannot even type properly. thought my keyboard had problem. no. I can fucking type fucking quick and well here now with no hiccup. i wish i can burn those all down.
no wonder we love devrant. even the website is fast and good.3
I'm back. I'm the old itsnameless. I left programming because high school stuff. It was just overwhelming. I, slowly, left programming until the point I forgot everything. A lot of evaluations, high school stuff just for remembering NOTHING. The only thing I did this year on high school was losing a really big part of my time remembering weird stuff.
After all this stuff, I would love to spend my 2 months vacations mostly in the place that I've met lovely, awesome people. That place is called devRant.
So, yeah, hello there.
P.S: Of course after the vacations I'll still be here. lol10
Ahhhh, devRant, the last holy place where you can carelessly read without being flushed with fucking foodball news.
Only the tech thingies I like so much, all year long. Devrant, I love you!2
Ahhh DevRant, lemme tell you, having a girlfriend is great. Especially when she's there for you through possibly the toughest time in your life. Needless to say, I'd like to take on the incredible task of trying to show her my gratitude and love by using my programming prowess to make her something...
Unfortunately, I am stumped. I'm not much for art so I can't create Something overly visual for her, but I want it to have meaning. Any ideas folks? Seriously, what can I make my girlfriend? I need help :/6
Coding has brought me into new communities and is the reason I have some new friends. I have to say, the best part is knowing how things work. I love knowing how this rant is sent to a remote devRant server thru a socket. How my rant gets divided up into an array of characters, each just a string of 0’s and 1’s. How my rant is stored in a database. How the devRant server connects everyone, and how everyone can (if they have to) use a VPN if it’s blocked, etc. And of course, how it’s all done securely. It’s great having that confidence going into the future knowing that you’ll be relevant and you have technological security. I love talking with people and explaining how things work. How when people say “stop acting so smart, you don’t know anything about X,” which to I reply “do you know how many fucking Xs I made.” Coding is great.
I love devrant because devrant's design makes me to remind my B.Tech project design which had same upvote/tag/link styles like devrant and devrant has really weird devs too :D
What is the story behind you??4
Animator for 15+ years. Started self learning python a few months back. I made my first useful app today... Move the cursor every 10 seconds. 2019 is off to a good start.
I'm new to programming but I already love devRant.
Happy New Year everyone! 😀5
Well, so I finally got 200 ++s, and now I can finally...
Wear vests! Uh... so that's cool... XD
Anyway, I just wanted to thank everybody for being such a good sport, around here... I've not been here for a long time, but I already feel like a part of a big family, of developers (and, why not, also non-developers...), and that makes me so happy.
In the end, devRant is like one of those rubber ducks developers use to tell things, I guess, lol.
It's just that. devRant is a rubber duck.
And every one of us is making that rubber duck bigger, and bigger, into something so unique and cool...
Something you can talk to (or rant to, I guess haha), something you can express all of your feelings to...
And inside of that rubber duckie there are... all of us. Hearing these rants from developers all around the world.
In the end it's really the community the most important part of... every thing or project, really, whatever it is, online or offline.
Keep on ranting about whatever you want, if you feel the need to...
I hope to hear more about all of you.
Thank you, all of you. I mean it.
Especially you two, who made it possible, @dfox and @trogus.
...devRant is such a cool project.
I sincerely hope it lives forever, it deserves it. You deserve it.
Again, thank you!
I love you all, good devRanting! 💙8
devRant.. I need your help.
So for the last year I've been self teaching myself python, go, & haskell. I've really been enjoying myself, to the point we're I would like to make it my career. Insert problem, I stumbled upon ECU(engine control unit) reprogramming & flashing, and instantly fell in love with the idea. However I can not find any information it. Every college I've called talks to me like I just asked them to teach me witchcraft.
Does any dev have experience with ecu programming? How did you get into it?
Meta devRant rant:
Everyday there's a rant that reads, "I don't care what others think but I love me some PHP because all the $ gets me $$$, it just works™!"2
Stickers arrived a couple of weeks ago ...but didn't managed to post a pic till now and to say thank you devRant. I love you all...keep the spirit.6
Can't we just write rants in html? I mean I'm enjoying devRant really well so far but adding html tags and so would make me love it here even more13
I am in love.
I am in love with all the guys and girls working at Microchip support.
I am the kind of user that does not really understand what he's doing/what he wants to do, so I am constantly stuck in stupid configuration errors or looking for impossible solutions, yes I am THAT kind of a user...
Here is a PWM working, a support guy spent some minutes telling me that I have to connect to the right pin.
Ok, he had to tell me twice.😳
Thank you, it may have taken me days to find out this.
They does not know, but there is a HUGE amount of decreasing dumb question incoming 😈
Please be kind with me, and don't get mad when things will get serious, I will probably bring hell in your office, I am very sorry for that...
Still, thank you for helping the dumbest learner-by-mistake that doesn't know how to recognize a mistake.
I can't write this in the ticket system, I hope someone of you use devRant! (atsame54 office, I am talking with you!)
You are my stack overflow, and the project I will develop with your help is quite the only thing left before my graduate.
I will owe you so much beers, love you guys!!!
Don't get me wrong I love the weekly rants!
...but on mondays I just genuinely don't use devRant because reading about the same topic over and over again becomes boring so quickly.1
I always love rant when I LOST myself in coding and and GAIN by awaiting 20+1 like for that rant.
Thanks devRant You balance my business.
I'd love if devRant had a search for user name when writing a rant, so if I type @dfox, it'll at least verify the name before I post.9
Guys.... Were getting famous?
Oh shit that's Facebook....
* Posts the screenshot and runs away :) *
Taylor Swift...... You betrayed?3
I never liked Facebook. I only use it to get posts from the pages on architecture. Yeah, i wanted to be an architect 😅. But after a week of getting into coding, i flipping fell in love with this too. After, i found devrant, i thank god that it exists. Facebook is for people ranting about what their relatives are liking or hating or what, people they don't know, are doing. That's not real. What you guys, the community so wonderful rants about everyday, is the real stuff. I love devrant. I love to code.
Chalo(is about the same as saying,"I'm out"), Good Night peeps 😴.I'm high on sleep.
P.S. didn't proof read the above because high on sleep2
I think it is so sad you can't use your devRant icon on other sites. I know you could download them but the whole point is anonymous ranting so if someone know your picture they know who you are. I love the devRant icons <33
Passed out college this year...
Got a job too (lucky 😀)
Now all juniors are asking me how to prepare for placements... N keeps asking my resume..
And m saying everyone same stuff.. DS and algo is must.. n chk my LinkedIn for resume..
Soon, seems like m gonna tell them join devRant first and then I will say further..
Note: Placement starts in few weeks and they care now on how to prepare for it.. Folks say it's better to start late than never.. but still.. I wud love to help them but asking same questions repeatedly not gonna help them..1
@dfox @trogus : Do we have a feature of auto complete @ mentions ? If not, there can be an elegant feature to provide drop down suggestions to mention / tag user in comments after we type @ in comments of any rant ( not all the users , but author of the rant and those who previously commented on that particular rant previously. For example, if I commented on a rant of dfox, and trogus also comments and types @, me and dfox will be in the drop down, tapping on which will select and tag that user on that comment ). I bet users will love this devRant update. Sorry for long post , I don't have any potato :p5
Hello devRant !
I'm a student in computer science, in my last year. In one course, I'm asked to make a contribution on an open source project and participate in it's community.
Since I love the people here, I was wondering if you could point me something not too big I can help with that would be useful. To give you an idea, I have some experience in both Android and web development, but none in anything iOS.
Anyway, thanks for reading and you're awesome ! (Tagging dfox 'cause you know, helping the project ^^)10
Am I the only one who is just to lazy to order devrant stickers even if my posts have enough upvotes? :D
Don't get me wrong i love stickers!7
Seeing lot of images these days, not sure how much space this is going to cost devrant? @dfox (I love GIFs though)2
devRant help me!
I'm getting a lovely little tax return and am in the middle on what laptop to buy.
MacBook Pro (I like MacOS and build quality, fight me)
PixelBook (I'm a google fanboy and love ChromeOS so once again... Fight me)
What do you think would be the best option keeping in mind the PixelBook will run Linux apps as well...19
Honestly now that I have a job and I work with good people, being on devrant anymore just ruins my day. I love it when people rant about their jobs and code, and I love it when people share cool stuff on here. But the childish and toxic behavior leaves such a sour taste in my mouth. I hope I see you assholes (you know who you are) on the street so I can smack you, and you deserve every bit of what's coming to you. I hope you can turn your life around and actually help the world one day. Til then, I'm going to enjoy my life, because my life is fucking amazing. bye!3
mrawesome@dextel2 : ~ vi thankyou.txt
I just want to thank you each and every member of devRant to be there through my thick and thin. That's all. I could find any other safe community to share my ups and downs...So thank you everyone and thank you David and Trogus for making this amazing app and website. Love you all <3.1
Alright i have a confession
I left devrant a week ago (2000++) and made a new account cause i love it here7
I am not sure if devrant is the best place to post this so sorry if it is not.
How far do employers/recruiters go when searching online information about their applicants?
Do they simply check your fb? simple google search your name? advanced queries with multiple search engines? data gathering software like maltego? or really check and link leaked db dumps and pastebins?
If anyone has any knowledge or experience with this I would love to hear.
Thanks in advance10
Devrant website UI is so fucking cool! Man I so love it! <3
(the last time I used it on a browser was almost 1 year ago, when it had the mobile-app kinda UI)
It kinda overshadows the mobile app UI. Wish I had more time off from my job and could work on the mobile UI for android.1
Back to my old true self ~ ^^
(except now I have a yellow background, what looks like some sort of beverage, and a slightly darker skin because the Sun is a deadly lazer).
(I changed my avatar hours ago, already, but I couldn't rant about it then because of the 2h cooldown, so yeeeaah)6
That sad sad feeling of deleting my devrant account, because a pesky co-worker somehow discovered my alter ego on the Internet.
I don't necessarily want them to know some of the things I have said in the past. I don't regret said things, I needed to get them off my chest. It is just this person is ... what do you call them? Oh yes, a Snitch! I could see bad things happening if what I said got into the wrong hands.
Any who good to be back, I love this community.8
Why does DevRant make me feel I'm doing enough during the lockdown whereas the whole world's making me feel like crap and guilty that I haven't done enough.
I fucking love this community.5
Love the new web app for devRant!
Would love to see it as a PWA in the future but it's currently an amazing web app, well done guys!
Never get distracted.
Actually I dont but the website makes the distraction.
Currently, I am working on task and has deadline by tomorrow.
Try to find solutions over portals like SO etc etc.
In SO, I am going through the question comments and answers; yoh see hot questions. I love those. They always attract me.
And devRant to post about it.
Now you can say, why my deadline still on my neck
I love devrant so much for how I feel it's the one social network in which I feel part of the community, and I hate it for letting me realize how alive all of the stereotypical behaviours the IT crowd is usually shunned for are amongst us.
Users and managers aren't stupid, processes in a company are usually there for a reason, and if your boss is really that much of a dimwit, then why the hell are you even there?
This has to be one of the most recession proof professions out there. Change jobs. Stop blaming everybody else for your shortcomings, damn it.
But, yeah, much love to all of you making us look good and being humble about it.10
I managed to remember some old Bitwarden (password manager service, I remember that linuxxx recommended me this one a looong time ago) credentials, so I logged in. I found an old devRant account - not my first though (I deleted it).
I've been a random lurker all this time (this is the first dev community I've been and I'm not planning to leave it until it dies), and it's good to login just to give my 2 cents.
I love you all. Seriously. I love you all with every single bit of my heart (get it?), impartially. Thanks for existing.
Here's an interrupted "caramelCase posted a new rant!"; it's actually longer but a wild guy ++'d my comment.
p.s: seeing my avatar, I don't use c++ anymore. I've just grew with Python haha12
Hey DevRant fam, hope you're all doing very well.. for quite a while now I've been having this sort of emotion.. I'm in my final couple of weeks of College and have been looking to apply for some Junior software developer roles.. however for some reason i feel as if i may not be good enough, or perhaps i may not know enough to begin with, I'd love to know has anyone before experienced this feeling or this emotion? How have you dealt with it? would love some insight :-)
Today I wanted to finish a feature in some Python code I. Working on instead I scope creeped myself a bunch times adding "other cool features" and refactoring working and readable code that didn't need refactoring. Oh and learning about random things on SO and finally giving up on making any more progress for the day and reading devrant.
ADHD Self:"Coding is love, coding is life. Plus I'm getting paid."
Responsible self: "Wait no, go home sleep, spend time with your wife"
Remembering self:" she's out with friends"
Responsible self: "ah, carry on, she's probably spending more money than you're making"
My laptop now includes a DevRant sticker!
If you also have stickers on your laptop I would love to see them. Share photos of your laptops in the comments! :-)8
I personally love apps like devRant, Slack, github, etc
What are some other lesser known great apps for programmers and developers?3
Being a Dutch developer & student I'd love to seek new challenges and participate in coding events and Hackathons. Seeing as Devrant has so many amazing developers from The Netherlands around, any suggestions where I could go and find information about such events?6
Happy April's Fool !!! I hope someone does a good prank on you today ! Love the prank DevRant did with the ++ !!!
At first I thought that for some reason by ++ counter was bugged and I head directly to the avatar builder to buy the most expansive stuff.
Am I the only one whose daily morning routine is not only reading through devRant feed, but also catching up on the devRant issue tracker? Love me some discussions there :D1
Got Sony Xperia 10 Plus today. I love it but apps are not optimized for 21:9 display yet and devRant isn't too so when loading it's smaller but oh well.7
My only question is: how did I accidently find devRant and how can I be an active part of it now as I found and love it? :D5
ive recently started to study chemical engineering and most of the people there never even heard of java or html. only a few people understands jokes about computers. the people i know who understand these jokes all study in other cities. so after i talked to a friend of mine about my studies he showed me devRant and i love it. so hello folks youve got a new member XD3
Tl;dr coding is awesome, but teaching good programming skills is fundamental. Take some time to teach and help someone in need!
This morning I had to help two of my students who were unable to write a simple program to simulate a random sampling. It reminded me of how helpless I felt when I started out, and how I felt stupid for not getting easy concepts (and now I'm in love with programming). Here on devRant I hear so many stories about bad programming teachers, but it doesn't have to be that way. I'm the most impatient person on this planet, but I love teaching and I wish more people did it. So, go out and spread the word, fellow devRanters!3
As a dev living overseas I video chat with my family every Wednesday after dinner--a ritual to keep the family bond strong.
A ritual I dread.
While my cousin who works in hospitality always brings up interesting stories from her work, I have little to say about mine.
Sometimes my mom complains me being secretive of what I do. Everytime she says it I cry a little inside.1
That moment that quite a few people want a CLI tool for devRant but very few actually have input :p
I love my job/hobbies.
About to start (or resume) development on the CLI tool, if you want to provide last-minute input you can do there here: https://github.com/ChappIO/devrant/...

Hey DevRant Fam ❤️ hope you are all doing very well!, for awhile now i have been focusing on c# and I certainly do enjoy it! Though since I’m still in uni.. we have only been building forms which as far as i am aware is not used anymore..
So my devRant fam, I’d love to be learning more of the modern things and also building more modern forms using c#, I’m very curious to hear what advice you have for me, I’m very much happy to learn anything & I’m open to all of your opinions!.
Again thank you for reading my lengthy rant, I appreciate it highly!
Hope you have an amazing day/night wherever you are!
Hi friends of devRant. I'm looking for some advise.
I love learning new things(tech). I want to try out a lot of things like crypto, game dev, AR/VR, etc. I'm also a student and worried about my career. You know you just can't keep exploring technologies and not focus on a single track. Currently, I'm good with web dev. It feels so difficult at times. I hate leetcoding/competitive programming. So you can guess I'm not great with whiteboard interviews. How do I manage time to learn new things and also be able to land a job in a domain? Do you ever feel the same? Any career advise?6
I'm still wondering how this app exists.... Where does the money come from? So.....curious. Maybe it's better I don't know. Love devRant :)
Python is my wife, Elixir is my sexy girlfriend. While I love my life, the gf presents me what my wife cant. ReactJs/Rxjs is a lovely classic porn. The question is: what the fuck devRant is here???6
Who made friends here at devrant?
Cuz I made none and I would love to have some Dev friends over the world.... 😄15
Today, I went on the history of devRant that earlier how people used to post undefined rants. Even some who have knowledge can do it now!
I searched a lot about devRant on different media and got some bits
Here @AlgoRhytm asked a question on stackoverflow
I kept reading there chatlogs
Many people joined and left this community (Sounds too bad). We lost many legends like @Linuxxx, @Skayo and more and more.
But still there are many good one remaining from ages like @Root, @Jilano, @theabbie and more and more
I don't know what I am conveying to you people but I will try my best to stay tuned with devRant because I love it.5
there's gotta be another drunk post of me now sores
What I love about devRant aren't only the rants but really the comments. In almost every rant the comet section is at least as funny ass the rant it self. This shows how awesome this community isch.
Don't drunk as much as me and I really do.enjoy being part of this aesome part of the interwebs.1
Hi devRant community,
First of all, I'm so grateful and thankful for being part
of this awesome community. CHEERS!
I just wanna ask some advices from my super kind and awesome
pile of developers, what is the best thing to do if you're
stucked between creating a certain feature and a raging
girlfriend. I mean, my head is aching. I don't know what to do.
She needs time, but my first love which is programming also
needs much more of my time.
TLDR: I wanted to change email to new one, but I could not remember which one I have
currently. I found out an API in DevRant JS files for email verification and used
it to find it out.
So, I am moving from Gmail to Protonmail Pro, absolutely love their service.
I wanted to do same on Devrant but I could not figure out my current mail for
"I lost my password" form. My Password Manager have only login saved, and profile does
not show email address.
I thought that this user information is stored on server so it have to be some way to retrieve it. I dug
in source code and I've found:
`<div class="signup-title">Verify Your Email</div>`
Which has event assigned to function which uses jQuery.ajax (love it btw :D) to call:
This seems like worth a shot. Few copy-pastes and one ajax call later:
"Welcome to Devrant"
Got it :) So I have already changed in march when DevRant on previous layout.
This is what I love in this profession - problem solving. AI will not replace human
in any way, we will just stop coding array iterations and data manipulation - we will focus
on real problem solving and human touch (like design, convincing management for changes).1
¿Does it really takes that long to merge a branch when there is a conflict?
My "PM" takes like 20 minutes to fucking merge a branch that has a few lines of conflict... and I fucking hate to wait so long to continue on a ticket where I need previous work... I'm a JR full stack developer and I'm new to devRant... It was love at first sight.1
After spending hours on just one code and not able to make it run,
here I am on devrant and announcing,
Life is Shit, Shit is life,
Coding is love, but being a coder is shit.3
I love how devrant spreads at the office. See, no one wants to tell anyone about you since everyone wants to claim your rants as their own. But those who know, recognize the gifs as they spread across whiteboards, doors and channels nodding to each other with a secret smile.2
Thought about startup.. Strange but literally saying no single coin had in my pocket.. Still have love for startup.. But u know what no project no idea no team.. Still struggling for startup.. Fortunately few days back got proposal of govt project.. One min game literally coin replaced his face.. But after some days grant procedure issue pending sucks.. Still have love for startup.. Suddenly got a thought can I do it after grant but I know I have devRant support.. So still continue to love for startup ;-)
Just few days are remaining and waiting for it..
got my Devrant stickers!!!
attached them to the PC case I decided I'll be keeping for the rest of my life (I just love this case). Ended up super gluing part of the big sticker to my desktop.2
I think one of the great things about this app is how we handle bug reporting. Any time someone posts about a bug, people independently do extensive tests to determine the extent of the bug (or at least what devices are affected), and people nearly always give detailed replication steps. I think this is a great feature of this community1
Hearing a lot about Microsoft trying to acquire Github here on devRant.
Made me think, if this happens what will happen to atom?
Development will likely continue but then you would have two electron based, open source code editors both by Microsoft and Github. Probably not that much different from now, but still feels awkward...
Any thoughts? I love both editors and use them near daily. I just hope Atom was more performant and as actively developed as vscode.10
The rant that is referred by another rant (https://devrant.com/rants/2154321/...) sums it up pretty well.3
Grrrrrr!! Wtf,.. my younger brother uninstalled the mighty devrant app coz of memory issue to get space just to install a shitty BBM app!! How can I live without this awesome community. I have just banned him indefinately from getting near my fon... still thinking of grounding him!! How can he do that... undeniably in love with this community2
So does devrant save all your rants?
Apparently I'm super narcissistic and enjoy reading my old rants and the responses to them. A lot. And I'm browsing through, clicking, reading all the old comments (you guys are really great, I love reading your comments) and I realize at the bottom of the list of my rants theres no pagination, no infinite scroll. It just ends at the bottom.4
I love devRant, but one thing that I don't like is that all improvements are only coming to the mobile apps, and you can only become devRant++ using a mobile app. This is kinda discriminating against all of us who for various reasons cannot or will not use mobile apps. I am a dev; I use computers with big displays , (preferrably fullsize) keyboard and mouse. I do own a smartphone (a *real* one, with buttons, not a despicable touchscreen), but I use it for SMS/MMS and phone calls only. Mobile apps are just useless to me. The screen is too small and the numeric keypad doesn't lend itself for typing anything but brief texts. A bigger mobile phone wouldn't be a mobile phone. If it doesn't fit into the pocket and cannot be comfortably held against the ear, I might just as well carry around a laptop and then we're back where this rant started. I am a dev and love computers. Sure, I can develop for mobile phones too if needed, I'm just not the end-user.18
The devRant avatar builder should mos def offer loot boxes. I am nearly able to blow my first century on a new shirt or the duck. If a random loot box at 500 gave me the 1/1000 chance to get the white tiger, I would do it. Yes statistically if the model was driven like a slot game I would get the shirt or the duck anyway. But imagine the excitement, the fists slamming down on tables, the expletives. Passion like that leads to love. There is no love in choosing between the shirt and the duck.6
Just opened devRant in a desktop browser after a very (x5) long time and boy I love the new interface. So much information is available on a single screen.
this.rantType != RantType.RANT;
Hey, i do not want to spam DevRant with non dev stuff, but i really want to ask this you, i personally cant only code all time, im coding full time and a lot in my free time, but i just cant only code.
So i found another thing that i fell in love with, i fell in love with animal photography!!
I want to ask you, yes you reading this: do you need something else than coding or not? and if you do, what? let me know with a simple comment!6
Day 8 of devWholesome...
GUYS IM FINALLY BACK! I am so sorry for the stop in posts, however I would like to make it known that I am still a student and still need to pass school. devRant was just not my priority at the time, but with the break coming up and weight off my shoulders I can continue doing these posts. In proper fashion, I want you to tell someone you love, "I love you." or "I appreciate you" today. You never really know when that might get taken away and I don't want you to miss the chance to do that. Make sure you eat all your meals, drink your water, and as always, make the most out of your day!
I missed doing this so much, I am glad to be back at it!6
How about language specific clothing, I would love to don the allegiance to my language on my armor in DevRant (and it makes you easier to identify)3
Today my unixstickers propack arrived finally!🤑
Telling the truth I am not evnolved in any of these technologies 🤣. I am an SAP/ABAP consultant with one year of experience and I don't feel I am going to put these over my Thinkpad🤔
Maybe it's time to get some devRant stickers, I really love them☺️5
Hey DevRant fam!,
I hope everyone is well as always! I was just curious... Very recently i bumped into a website called 'LeetCode' and was curious about trying to solve some problems for fun. However to me it seems that i get stuck on the wording or it just gets confusing,. I personally always enjoyed building things but wasn't really a fan of doing the actual coding problems from websites like this not sure if that is a terrible thing?, was wondering has anyone else been in this position? Maybe i'm lacking something? :-)
Would love to hear anyone's input! thank you for taking the time to read through my post as always!
i would fucking love to donate to devrant and be a supporter but sadly, I can't use PayPal, or even Bitcoin4
Good morning devRant community, so currently im on my early morning commute to College, and it got me thinking.
So I’m very passionate about programming but i also love playing around with the Stock Markets, Are there Software Engineering positions which work with the markets? I’ve been thinking its called a “Quant” but im not too sure, Also does anyone have any possible experience within the field? What it takes to get in etc?.
I highly appreciate it! Hope you have an amazing day/night. :-)10
Advice wanted! !rant
Guys i started web dev about two years ago on windows but i want to switch to linux. I thought of using elementary os, ubuntu or arch. What would you recommend?
Also how do you do your setup then? Dualboot or in a vm? I want to use docker to set up my infrastructure if possible.
Also i mainly use InteliJ for dev.
Thanks in advance!
Also i love devRant!18
Okay. Confession time:
I made a devRant account to "Join the Dark Side". Dark themes are so much better than light themes. They're easier on the eyes (at least for me), they have more aesthetic appeal, and I personally love the color combinations. So I just wanted the dang dark theme. What I got was an addiction to devRant. Well done you sly developers you just hooked another user.1
suggestion for devRant
I'm posting them here so if others want they can flame me as they see fit.
- Please add the ability to customize which notifications to get and which rants to watch.
- Please move around options in profile and settings and for the love of God move the delete profile button. It's just behind the settings button so if you press settings and click again there's a chance you have clicked the delete button.
- Some of the app is using JS for navigation and other parts don't. Pagination can be done with JS. Seeing notifications too.
- I get that the app is designed this way to be displayed on mobile but for someone like me who uses the web app the small editor and it's huge font size and the big plus button are really annoying.
I love this place. I hope it gets better.1
Yo fellow devrant devs!
Are here any PLC devs present?
After 4 years of internal struggle, short side leaps and a big amount of feeling restricted and beeing tired of it, I decided to totally switch from windows to linux. No dual boot (which ended about 20times in "oh, i didnt start linux for 2 weeks.."), no "i can have Linux on VM". Just linux and me, hopefully a neverending love story.
Thats the theory.
Problem 1: is it somehow possible to use Siemens TIA portal with Linux in a proper way?
Problem 2: is there any IDE which is at least nearly as comfortable for c# coding as visual studio?2
devRant help me decide on something...
I feel like learning a new language but can't decide, I'm torn between Swedish (because I love Sabaton) and German (I have a character in my book who is german)...11
Is the devRant Swag Store website made from scratch or is it a Shopify template? Just curious because I love the layout and how clean it is.4
I have a function that receives 2 parameters: a string and a max numer of characters.
It returns an array with the partitioned string.
function name("hi, I love devRant", 10);
 ->"hi, I love"
 ->" devRant"
Now.... what would be the appropriate name for that function?10
I would love to have a private messaging system in devrant(with some limitations ofcourse)... Anyone?3
Anybody else: Solarized (no affiliation)? Dark and light are so beautiful. Plugged in to terminal, window manager, (neo)vim, statusline (yeah, the Awk thing). Feels so beautiful. Can read shit off it anywhere, and my eyes aren't going any more blind.
P.S devRant team please get post separation up so that I don't have to add a 'question/rant/meme' tag to everything I post. <3 Love u guys!
Who needs devrant when we have shit games like Watchdogs 2 to take out our frustrating experiences? I have no idea what the story is any more. Just senseless death because I suck at driving motorcycles through shops and I love virtual coffee. #seemslegit1
Love having the windows app! Now I can dedicate one of three monitors to it and experience DevRant in all its full screen glory! Good work guys!
devRant please hear me out. Why use this ":/" instead of this ":)" or this ":D" or, I don't know, some shit like this ":P" maybe. Don't overwrite my feelings man, I love and enjoy coding!8
