Huge congrats to @linuxxx for being the first ever member of the devRant community to reach 100,000++
This is an awesome accomplishment and @linuxxx earned all of his ++ with awesome stories and has represented everything the devRant community is about while getting there.
So once again, congrats @linuxxx, and thanks for everything you have contributed to devRant!52 -
A client called
Client: Hello Mr. Can you come to our office today?
Me: Yes sure
In fews hours I was there
Client: Check this email we are getting every day
It was email from spammers who asking to redesigning their website because it was not responsive
Me: 🧐Thinking ‘valid point !’
Me: So what you need me to do for you then?
Client: We need you to redesign the site
Lol - thanks spammers for bringing in new client12 -
A guy in the office just bursted out "9gag is getting boring... I wish there was a community for devs and stuff...". The entire team just stared at him xD9

"there's a problem with your API"
Me: "why?"
"I get no data"
Me: "what response code are you getting?"
"405 - Method not allowed. But only on the /version endpoint"
Me: "Soo... What request are you sending?"
"POST"
WHY THE FUCK WOULD YOU SEND A POST REQUEST TO AN ENDPOINT THAT **GETS** THE VERSION OF MY API???!!!!
Me: "Read the documentation. It's there for a reason"13 -
I have this one major pet peeve - getting interrupted on any messenger by "hey".
Q: Hey
A: Hey, what's up?
-minutes pass, I try to resume work-
Q: Do you have a second?
A: Sure, what's up?
-minutes pass, I try to resume work... Again-
Q: Do you know anything about #feature#?
A: Yeah, I wrote most of it, what do you need?
-minutes pass, I try to resume work... AGAIN-
(goes on same pattern, takes half an hour for a 10 second question/answer)
Like... Come on!!! Don't do this to me
I get it, I like to be cordial and friendly - but there is absolutely nothing stopping you from getting your message across without making me have to go back and forth (interrupting my work).9 -
Can't believe the US are talking about removing protection for net neutrality. I'm not based in the US, but hope devs out there are getting behind Net neutrality day and Battle for the net6

Problems of Freelancer
Freelancer: Hey your app is ready.
Client : Can you add this ?
Freelancer: Sure, When am I getting payment.
Client: As soon as this gets done.
Next Day...
Freelancer: Hey your app is ready.
Client : Thanks. This looks good if there is this feature. Can you help me with that?
Freelancer: Sure, When am I getting payment.
Client: As soon as this gets done
Next Day..
Client : Blah Blah Blah
Freelancer: Sure, When am I getting payment
Frustration at peaks!!!10 -
Best: actually getting something working out there and having it visited by devRanters! (security/privacy blog)
Worst: rewriting entire applications because my code often fucking sucks2 -
This is Spork. Spork lives on the desk in my apartment.
My girlfriend bought the plant for her office but he wasn't getting enough light there so now he has a better home on my desk and gets lots of sunlight during the day.4 -
Found a Google employee in street view getting lost and using paper map .. There are also seem to be 2 guides with him...
I find it kinda amusing8 -
Four engineers get in a car. The car won't start.
The mechanical engineer says:
It's a broken starter.
The electrician's engineer says:
The battery is dead.
The chemical engineer says:
There are impurities in the gas.
The software engineer says:
Guys, try getting out of the the car then back in!1 -

That moment of joy when u see an exception error on the screen instead of a white page
Getting there😂5 -
Well I'm a bit late to the party, buttttt.
Who the fuck designed these stalls? Can you imagine being out and getting sick? You go rushing into the bathroom only to walk in there and realize this is the situation? I'd be so fucking pissed off.
Shitty UX and UI.2 -
The problem with me programming lately :
Mom: foooood is ready...
Me: Will be there in a minute. (deep inside I know that's a lie).
5 minutes later...⏰
Mom: food is getting cold!
Me: Yes I'm coming, testing one last thing...I swear !
30 min later I'll join the table...The guilt 😩 I'm sorry mommy 🙏
Anybody else with the same problem? 😅9 -
NEVER ACCEPT to be the ONLY DEV in the company who knows the whole product!
I am in the position of being the only one who knows all modules, there are even modules I developed which no one else will be able to maintain as soon as I leave the company, which I am planning right now and this also makes me getting depressed about.24 -
@dfox should split devrant into categories.
-rants
-advice/help
-weekly rants (already there)
-dev memes
Then people can just read rants or whatever they want without other things getting in the way.
Down vote can also be used if something is in the wrong category9 -
YAY! I know it's not much compared to you geniuses but it's been hard for me to take the time through high school to really wrap my head around the technicals. I just wanted to share my joy with y'all!!! :D I'm also currently going through the "30 days challenge" and I'm on day 19 still but ayyy I'm getting there!!!8

> Gradle build finished in 32 seconds
As if you did, fucking cunt. I've only watched half an anime episode and commented here and there in the meantime. Surely that'd be 30 seconds. Perhaps Gradle, you could've taken all that extra time to learn how to fucking count.
Android development, what hell am I getting myself into...5 -
I am afraid describing my weirdest coworker would result in me getting stabbed by him with a Mickey Mouse mug. There is no coworker in the world as weird as him, and he would instantly recognise me if I were to describe him here.
I am afraid of his Mickey Mouse fetish. Actually he is 35+ and used t *gets stabbed with a Mickey Mouse mug*7 -
An architect, a hooker and a programmer were talking one evening, and somehow, the discussion turned to which profession was the oldest."Come on, you guys! Everyone knows mine is the oldest profession," said the hooker."Ah," said the architect, "but before your profession existed, there had to be people, and who was there before people?" "What are you getting at, God?" The hooker asked.
"And was He not the divine architect of the universe?" The architect asked, looking smug.
The programmer had been silent, but now he spoke up. "And before God took on himself the role of an architect, what was there?"
"Darkness and chaos," the hooker said.
"And who do you think created chaos?" the programmer said.1 -
I once explained to my teacher that i had trouble getting started with programming after a longer break and wondered if he had any smart ways to get into programming again. He smiled and explained that:
"There are no great ways to get into programming, the trick is to never really get out of it".
Best tip I've ever gotten.1 -
I bypassed the payment system on a paying Internet terminal in Egypt by booting into safe mode. I was 14, and there was no other way of getting Internet, so I was really proud of myself 😁2
-
Getting closer and closer to my dream setup!
What I want: powerful enough computer for some general gaming + IDE + shitloads of terminals with 6 screens running a Linux distro.
What I have: powerful enough computer which can run quite some games and handle my IDE + shitloads of terminals. Runs Linux already but still have to order 3 screens.
Nearly there 💜11 -
YAY a JOIN query (MySQL) just ran successfully at the first try for the first time of my life!! I never understood joins but slowly getting there I guess :)4
-
I hate the fucking fakeness at my corporate workplace. Everybody's kissing everybody's ass. What' worse is that individually, they're nice people but the environment changed them and they don't even notice it.
Also they fucking congratulate themselves for their fucking great work but all they did is basically a big crud app. We're all just a bunch of code monkeys. I'm so getting out of there.12 -
I often hear
You will be promoted as lead if you act like it or take charge
That is really stupid, there is difference between responsibly and effort.
Why would i put effort for things that i am not getting paid for ?
Fuck that6 -
People out there are getting married, having kids, dating their crush and here I am staring at gradle build to finish with 32 errors and 10 warnings, life is that easy 😐9
-
There are two records in this table.
I can confirm that the second one is currently being pulled.
One of the values I see getting pulled is different than either two of the records.
😶6 -
Some years back (Window XP time)..
There used to be desktops mostly.
I was opening the CPU casing to clean the boards and my mother came near to me and saw lots of dusts inside. She realized something and told this : " You don't often clean these dusts and that's why your computer is getting more viruses."4 -
Inb4 2 question ahead
1. So in another 2 weeks I’ll be getting a new storage to upgrade my laptop, and since I will be developing C# both MVC and ASP.net should I stick to windows or there is a linux distro I could try using. Probably will dual booth if I have to use windows, so friendly linux is nice
2. For the storage I’ll be getting 860 EVO 250gb, any feedback? Also 4gb ram for the upgrade3 -
Sent another developer instructions for generating an SSH key pair and to send me the public key. He did so. There was a problem getting it to work. So, naturally, he emailed me the private key.1
-
Stakeholder: Our customers aren’t getting their order confirmation emails. It’s going to their spam. Is there a way to resend the emails?
Me: Wait. The email getting sent to their spam is not the same as not getting the email. Is it both or just one of those things?
SH: Here are some emails getting sent to spam.
Me: These are sent by third party vendors that you contract with. I have no control over what they do. You need to talk to your vendors.
SH: 😮
Me: 😑 -
Thanks to DevRant, you have saved hundreds of monitors from getting smashed, keyboards from getting torn into pieces and mouses being flung across the rooms! There is a platform for rants now!3

Only 7 of the ~200 Routes are named. The former dev just created URLs within the views with the url() method.
#4.1
There are just GET & POST request. Even though stuff is getting edited or deleted.

Found that out that one of our company's internal API (I hope it's only internal) is exposing some personal data. After finally getting the right people involved they said they'd fix it 'immediately'.
5 days later I check and now there is more personal data exposed...which includes personal security questions and the hashed answers to said questions.
And of course they are using a secure hashing mechanism...right? Wrong. md5, no salt
Sigh...5 -
Well im slowly getting there, but i still dont understand why does my wife want me to make her cam...8
-
When you've had a long ass 14 hour day and you're getting nowhere with a problem so you finally accept its time to go to bed...
You lie there for 45 minutes doing nothing but thinking up awesome solutions to the problem you went to bed over....4 -
We work with about 7 developers at this company with 80 somewhat websites in production.
We edit changes directly trough FTP and we use ctrl+z as version control...
(yes since i started working here I've been demanding git, I'm spearheading it and we are getting there slowly)4 -
The final verdict is out. After almost 3.5 years im getting fired. Im relieved because i’ve been expecting this already since december. No matter how hard i try my mistakes aren’t excepted anymore.
Good thing there are three other companies i have interviews with.
Let’s hope for a new offer and smooth transition soon!11 -
Success
There are 21 people in our office.
11 were Apple users. 2 are now android, 3 others are getting it for their next phone.
The other android users would never go back to Apple.3 -
Son: I've done good investment in Bitcoins
Dad: What is the rate of interest in Bitcoins?
Son: There is no such thing called rate of interest in Bitcoins. Bitcoins are virtual currency. It's kind of money itself.
Dad: So you gave money and got back money? It's not called as an investment. It's called getting change!5 -
Might be nothing for others, but I finally published my Vue website with the following setup:
1. Vue inside docker
2. Nodejs API inside docker
3. MongoDB inside docker
4. Nginx as reverse proxy
5. Let's Encrypt
6. NO I WILL NOT SHARE THE LINK, don't want to be hacked lol and it is for personal use only.
But I'd love to thank devRant members who have helped me reach this point, two months ago I was a complete noob in Vue and a beginner in NodeJs services, now I have my own todo website customized for my needs.
Thank you :)26 -
I'm so fucking upset with this shitty iPhone. I can't believe there are people who are actually *paying* real money for this crap. Thankfully I am getting paid to use one, otherwise I would flush it in the toilet (but then even the toilet would reject it).9
-
Users are losers (most of them).
When you see a post about someone buying a product, well explained and with price and all.
225 comments: How much.. price please..
IT'S THERE ON TOP OF DESCRIPTION YOU STUPID PIECE OF GARBAGE, JUST READ, YOU'RE NOT 2 YEARS OLD CHILD GETTING DISTRACTED BY IMAGES7 -
if there's one thing I love more than coding, it's using metaphors to explain to other people why they're not "getting it". like the all famous contractor:
"yeah I know you need 5 months to build my house, but can you do it in 2. Also, I'm going to pay half. Oh, and when the house is done, could you also add a cellar?"
any more good metaphors out there?4 -
When your release keeps getting pushed back to get other customer facing releases out the door, but your project is vital to every product's functionality and your just sitting there like...4
-
JavaScript.
So terrible language in so many ways, the code is a absolute mess, the shit of the callback hell of functions inside functions inside functions.
And now everything it's built around the tucking JavaScript, you have to learn it by force because there is almost no project that doesn't use it.
I know it has some benefits and because that is getting bigger but the syntax is the worst shit ever, I mean, switching from Python to JavaScript is a pain.
The only good thing is it's getting better with each ES iteration, but it is still a really big piece of crap with hundreds of frameworks.13 -
Gotta be honest, getting around illustration software is actually hard. There are just too many items, and my view is small.
Head spinning... 😵6 -
Someone is trying to launch a brute force attack on one of my servers that I set up for an old project. According to the logs, they've tried Jorgee, they've tried directly accessing the MySQL database (with the laziest passwords), and they're now on day 4 of their brute force attack against my SSH server. I'm fairly certain that they won't be getting in (not that there's anything worth getting in the first place), but what's the standard protocol for this? Do I just wait this out, or is there something I can do to break their bot? I have fail2ban enabled, and it is doing its job, but the attacker is changing their IP address with every attack.10
-
When an application is nearly complete and suddenly there is a recommendation thrown from management to change a technical specifications . Which will change the whole cycle effort meaningless. How does that feel?! Getting it now.
-
There is a dude in my office who keeps clearing his throat 64-128 times a day!
It is getting pretty annoying!!!
Sometimes it sounds like a horse neighing...
Should I put some HALLS on his desk?!?!?!9 -
After a long day of wrestling with some bad code and getting it to 'work' leaves me feeling dev angst. Then on my way home I see some minor bug in a phone app I'm using and I think to myself, "MY GOD.. all software is made out of SUFFERING."
Behind every tiny defect out there lays some poor soul's looong hours of overtime, stress, tears, alcoholism, and stale popcorn dinners. -
Leaving work with no bugs in the code! Everything works flawlessly!
Coming back the next day and all of a sudden nothing works and we need to spend the whole day getting it to work as well as it did yesterday.
There seems to be programming gnomes, ruining our code at nights!3 -

There are 6 stages of an man's live that he wish for
1. Child phase and school phase : don't know what it was, can't remember mine
2. Teenage phase : study, exploring new areas, competition, body building, getting into relationships , breakups, dreaming, etc
3. Ambitious phase : getting graduate, changing jobs , lust for money, tensions, parties, ambitions, cars ,new houses , marriage, honeymoons and kids
4. Family settled phase : permanent job, nice salary, long family trips , fun time with kids, paid holidays, hardworking phase
5. No tensions settled phase : children getting graduate, marrying, trying to settle themselves, you and your wife having enough money or pension to live peacefully, you are playing golf with friends, doing excersize nd charity regularly, etc
6. Permanently settled phase : lie peacefully in your death bed and wait for eyes to close in sleep forever
..
..
..
..
..
What life gives : "fuck that shit... let's mix some of these stages, replace some of them with opposite/ negative stages and skip some of them"1 -
I'm getting convinced that some areas are not teachable. You have to learn it by yourself. Databases (sql), for instance, the teacher never manages to get the class attention. Even I that consider myself a very interested guy can't handle 2 hours of his explanations. I tried to think in a better way he could teach the content but don't really think there is one ..Do you guys faced issues like that in school?3
-
There was an ad for a dating website before a video about linux.
YouTube is getting quite offensive.
Video: https://youtube.com/watch/...
I also am seriously considering switching to openSUSE2 -
Ok I'm seriously getting sick of this shit, my new manager wants us to have the fucking 12 hour night shifts from the office for .....no reason??!! for her own fucking entertainment I suppose!
I knew the day would come where my happy times at the new job would be over, my target now is stay 3 more months so I've been there for at least a year then see what happens. fuck me.4 -
How many times do I have explain the rookiees in java developer team, that implementing an interface is not inheritance. You are not actually inheriting any member - variable or method or otherwise. You are just getting a skeleton, according to which you have write your class. THAT IS NOT INHERITANCE.
So MULTIPLE INHERITANCE does not exist in java. Period.
There is no way around it. Stop misunderstanding stuff and passing that misconceptions to newbies.1 -
>Asks client if the proxy can use self-signed cert
>Client agrees, no problem
>Deploys
>Client complains about "an error they're getting"
>The error: "Error in connection establishment: net::ERR_CERT_AUTHORITY_INVALID"
:|
Am I a joke to you? Or am I just talking to a brick wall over there?7 -
Go to interviews. You always learn stuff in any interview. Either be a technology or design pattern or any freaking thing they use there.
Basically 2 things can happen:
you get the job or ... you don't,
either way you will still leave with some extra knowledge.
Also don't be afraid to tell how much money you want to earn. Getting a job ans feeling pissed about the salary is a horrible feeling.1 -
I spent the entire freaking day on one spec — one! — and I still haven’t gotten it to pass. Or fail. It’s still just breaking. Even the simple crap is breaking, so getting the actual complicated things I need it to do working? Bloody pipe dream (whatever that means).
Just. Goddamn this system is complicated and poorly designed.
And no, before you ask, of course there is no documentation.
I want my day back. 😡4 -
So today's the day.
We've now successfully installed four Ubiquity AP's with a Ubiquity Security Gateway onto a 1000/1000 fiber line. Feels really nice when you're finished with the cable laying and everything just works™. Just getting the fiber in there was a project of its own, but now it's all complete. Tommorow I'll be working from home, and on Monday I guess I'll be bombarded with connectivity issues. Oh well, let's enjoy the weekend first 😁2 -
So google maps APIs will now basically be a pay to play, like many other services of google, is there any actually good alternative for getting long+lat and distance matrix for free?17
-
!dev
Lots of dudes keep posting his "check in at the gym" statuses on fb.
Shit like that irritates me. I go to the gym at least once a day, have been going since my military days. I have no need to take pictures and or let my fb people know about that shit. I have way more important shit to do.
My biggest thing is, how the fuck do you equate going to the gym with success?
A picture of you working out with the tags "chasing my dreams", "towards my goal in life", "getting the future i want" <----how? Are you gonna live of getting slim and fit? I mean, you can, but then why are you still living with your parents being unemployed?
How? You can't say that you are chasing your dreams there when the only reason you get to go 5 times a day there is because you are unemployed......
Just saying13 -
Made a LinkedIn profile for the first time since like 2013.
I haven’t put current job on there, only been here a month and if I absolutely have to have to I’ll just mention working here for a month but it wasn’t a good match in an interview.
Start getting the expected recruiter messages once I finished the profile.
One of them is a recruiter at current job.
Fucking lol.3 -
There are many operating systems out there but android is like windows for phones and it's getting ugly very fast.2
-
Finding motivation to work on stuff i dont like, because its sometimes part of the package.
I'm still having problems with that, but its getting there!1 -
There is nothing more fulfilling than working you ass off 2 days, learning a new technology, and getting it to finally work as per the requirements and then ...
getting told that the absolute cunt of a client forgot the release date, announced its release 2 days early and decided to casually ask why there is no app on the released URL (it's a tiny Agonizing Reality [AR] app meant as a gimmick on the invitation cards for an upcoming convention).
My boss told me, the thing I worked on is now being scrapped and will not be released.
Yes, I wish the clients could slowly die in agony by a tree growing out of their appendix. Nature shall reclaim their corpses and feed a happy pig which I would happily have a feast of. 🤗3 -
There should be a document given to all recruiters outlining how technologies are related and what NOT to ask developers. The hate has to stop. Imagine a world where the recruiters (broadly) understood devs. We'd have a much easier time getting jobs. I think I might just write one up and try to distribute it locally.3
-
Oh God.
So I'm working on something and I needed to see how it looks when you type a command into the terminal (like the animation).
Quickly Google "Kali linux terminal," since it's kinda where I'm getting some of the design from.
First video "Kali Linux basic commands (every ethical hacker must know in 2018)"
1st command: whoami
2nd command: date
3rd command: pwd
4th command: cd
5th command: ls
I'd say that's a wee bit basic there and those are commands that literally anyone who touches linux should know, dontcha think there pal?
Nice job using buzz words to try and get views on your "tutorial"4 -
TLDR I messed up my partitions!
I had on old netbook with Windows on it, it was getting painfully slow. So I thought, why not try dual boot?
Since I had never installed a GNU/Linux OS before, I messed up the partition. Like, really, really badly.
Somehow, i accidentally created like a 100 1kb partitions. Windows wouldn't boot, no other OS was present. Shit had started to hit the fan.
Turns out there was this easeUS partition manager, that you could make a bootable USB with it. So I did that, deleted all partitions, created new one, installed Linux Mint on it. I've done a lot of other shit like this, but this rant is getting too damn long. -
Went to firefox test pilot and they really got some cool ideas there (e.g. snoozetabs: https://testpilot.firefox.com/exper...) only if firefox devs invested 1% of fucking around with "cool ideas" to maybe getting the dev and responsive tools up-to-date..1
-
This fucking guy create a mess of a code, more than a spaghetti code, a clusterfuck of shit untested spaghetti code, and the project is actually getting well, our customer is getting bigger but everytime there is something to be added, its a fucking pain to add, and when something breaks, almost every thin breaks, and the shitty guy who wrote this code is quitting and its fucking up to me to clean up all the fucking mess, fucking asshole.
DOCUMENT AND TEST YOUR CODE KID, DONT BE A FUCKING SPAGHETTI PROGRAMMER7 -
I start shaking and getting nervous when there is something I really, really want to say.
Today in school we started talking about Amazon Alexa and privacy.
This topic concerns me a lot and I started talking in front of the whole class about Google and things they do to spy on you. After about 30 seconds of me talking I started shaking because there was so much I wanted to say and with so much enthusiasm and also a bit of anger.13 -
A site I manage in my spare time with a couple thousand normal users was getting attacked by a Chinese botnet. All the requests were coming from only two subnets. Easy to block. Feels like this was only the vanguard. Prelude to the real attack. I'm thinking about moving the site to its own server, so it won't affect my other sites. There at least if it gets kneeled, it'll only be that site.6
-
My uni has closed down today. No classes until further notice. We will have few online ones but all lectures are gone, well i dont care since i didnt attend them anyway.
It is nice to see that administration is doing things to prevent the pandemic from getting worse. There are only few cases in my city but it is good it be caucious.5 -
"I hope we can soon finish X to do Y", you might think this is the more polite way of asking "are we there yet?", but you're wrong and you're getting blocked for the next 4 days
-
There should be a basic qualification for getting certified as a trainer or a teacher.
This one dude is trying to give us knowledge about advanced C++ and I shit you not, he thinks the best way to engage with the audience is just read monotonously off a PowerPoint and saying "am I right?" in 5 minute intervals.
Can't wait for this day to get over and then finally I am free ffs4 -
Finally getting my first certificate in Udacity , which is a website where you can have courses in coding 🚶🏻♀️💕...
In order to get it I had to first learn the lessons there and then do a final project which involves all the things I learned which was HTML and CSS in making and designing websites in browsers 🍃21 -
Ranting after many light years (oops that's a unit of distance)
Damn Damn Damn.
There is complex workflow engine, and the only thing I know is once you fix and get success response from method A(), call method B().
After 2 days and nights effort, method A() is fixed and I am getting success response.
Now, when I pass this response to B()
One data is missing and hence failing.
Where the hell is that data getting kicked out...
I am in a dead end. I don't even know where to look.
Pinged engineers for help but all in vain till now.
Working on one of world's largest system, and I am miserable in debugging with this system.
And the worst part is there is nothing that I can turn off and on so that it works.
(Don't blame me. I am not that dumb. I just started using it since 3 days)2 -
There was a time when backend engineers used to make fun of frontenders and tell them 'you arent a real software engineer', nowadays frontend is getting so complex and cool that even backenders are now starting to learn frontend. I am so happy that because of new tech and frameworks frontend has gained such a massive respect.26

Toughest part of dev interviews? There are multiple I can think of.
Getting an interview altogether in this dumpster fire of an economy.
Negotiating salary (i.e. prevent getting a low-ball offer)
When the interviewer is a dev themselves and they get on a power trip and ask you the toughest/trickiest questions.
Convincing the interviewer that something you don't know now can be learned later just by googling and tinkering around.
Trying not to burst out in anger when you get asked stupid questions like "Why aren't you married?"9 -
Every time I feel Im getting my act together (at work) there is some AWS service which I know nothing about and that totally kicks my asss
Geeez the dev ops side of things is a total void for me..4 -
To any CEOs that berade there employees for only getting something 99% correct even though the team is less than 3 weeks old, FUCK YOU. That shit is not motivating and you just fucked up any motivation your employees had for being excited to build your product.3
-
We're getting there!
These stats are based on User Agent, check https://w3counter.com/globalstats.p...9 -
There should be a developer licence so we could stop these stupid wannabes from getting into and ruining the industry with their shit work. We're so fed up maintaining these stupid codes the company previously outsourced somewhere on earth.9
-
So there is a 50/50 chance I am getting flamed af tomorrow during code review because of my branching/merging actions on thursday and friday... Merge conflicts... We all love them...3
-
Pressure that wasn't there.
I thought there was work pressure, but it was all in my mind.
I'm coding well, getting better everyday.1 -
There is nothing quite so arousing, than getting your own VPS and hosting your applications*

Managed to keep the IT department happy... made friends there, getting amazing stuffs at request right at my desk2

There is a function in this program I’m working on for getting related documents and a function for getting unrelated documents. I suppose if you call them both you get all the documents in the universe!
-
Co-worker: "I'm getting files from customers which are in multiple types and encodings. Is there a way to force them to send only us-ascii so my tool gets only one kind which is easier to parse?"
Me: "Welcome to programming with arbitrary sources; you'll just have to build your tools to figure it out and not break (just rely on dozens of existing tools which you refuse to use)"1 -
My boss: now that the other project is stable, you can start working on this new one. It has to be built from scratch in Angular.
Me: is there any particular reason we have to make it in Angular? Last one in React+Redux worked very well and I am getting used to it.
My boss: Just to give it a try.
And Angular steep learning curve is not even the worst part. Lack of design and direction is.2 -
Are there any other developers out there that start getting scared when a project actually starts gaining traction? No? Just me?2
-
My collaborator was always telling me what a great team we are, until it got serious.
Getting stabbed back in the butt and fired from your job. HAHA what great Teamwork...
After that steal all my ideas and projects and sell them as there own.
I hope that guys Flip-Flops will burn someday1 -
In two weeks of christmas holidays my brain had enough time to fire the guy that was in charge of my sleep pattern and to hire a new guy with less experience that is really trying hard to fix the mess that has been left for him.
Went to bed at 5am...
Woke up at 9am...
I'm getting there!4 -
Seems like the poisoning of the internet is coming to a head. While searching earlier for a first principles reference to answer a question with, I came across an entirely obfuscated query.
"Codd's forms of normalization"
https://google.com/search/...
In the first four pages, there are 5 results that aren't ad farms, crappy pasta tutorial sites, brand building articles, poorly understood rote regurgitation of information, quora, or some combination of all of the above.
In 2005, the top 5 would likely have contained Bell Labs, UoI, Cambridge and Oracle. Mind you, I don't think the world is getting dumber, exactly, just that the signal to noise ratio in the information sphere is getting worse and the risk from that is the world becomes markedly "dumber". The only barrier to entry anymore is how well your SEO optimization competes.
I'm obviously getting old.

I've been using git mindlessly for a while now. But this week I've been working on getting a better understanding of how it's working.
There's a lot there that exists, it's nice to be doing it properly and not destroying branches and not understanding why.1 -
Getting cooped at home to a avoid COVID is annoying because it got me remembering my ex. I hate myself for shutting down a few days thinking of him. If only there is an "Empty trash" button for emotions. Finally I get better today. I resume studying for work and target to pass the certification. Strive to be better!3

Front end developer is still getting a ticket even though the security flaw lies in the back-end.
Today, every click of the UI has an overlay of circular progress indicator indicates that there will be a synchronous actions in an asynchronous requests.
1 click = 1 loading state -
There have been many occasions over the years.
The first was playing with a Sinqlair zx80 and getting it to print 0 instrad if syntax error ;)
The latest probably was when I started to understand react.js. -
Firefox is getting better and better!
The improvements that came with 57 and Quantum were awesome! And now with 58 there are mayor performance improvements like Off-Main-Thread Painting and a new Javascript caching.
There are even some nice new features like the screenshot tool (in 58 available for the private mode, too!) that are really exciting.
I am looking forward that Firefox could maybe become again what it was back then! It's so cool!5 -
Starting a hackathon with getting the assignment and then replying with: there is a library for that2
-
1st day of the job tomorrow.
Tried to reset my (broken) sleep pattern by going to bed earlier and getting up at half 5, which is the time I'll need to get up. In typical fashion, I just didn't sleep. I just laid there with my eyes closed. This has happened before, so I know what will happen - no sleep again tomorrow and I start my first day after being awake for ~48hrs...
Fuck you, insomnia.2 -
Sometimes it's a challenge to show how much work I've accomplished to a non-techie (<- any good nicknames for such people?).
I mean yes it looks like it's pretty simple but there were like ~5000 new lines of code and 2 weeks of work put into getting this thing working perfectly, looking sexy, and moving efficiently all while making sure it protects our infra from idiots like you!2 -
Is there an api to fetch avatars?
@dfox
I mailed to you a long time ago, but not getting any responses.7 -
Speaking of JS gotchas. Why is there a null and undefined? I guess undefined doesn't exist, but null is it exists, but is null? Had a bug related to this. I was checking for null, but undefined was getting in there even though I defined the variable as null beforehand. All I can guess is some assignment shoved undefined in there. But that just doesn't make sense to me. So an existing variable can be undefined as well? lol
I am glad this is not my primary language for heavy lifting. Fuck this noise.
I was going to do this as a rant. But it turned into an ironic joke. I am adding an old meme, but it checks out for accuracy.23 -
Today I m getting bored at my place, so I just came out..! I notice various things, some people are enjoying with their families, some with their gf/bf, some are playing, some having food, some enjoying cooool weather. that time I realize there is a life apart from coding... try to live each moment who knows about tomorrow......!2
-
Taking over development of a system from some other guy who just straight up dropped it with zero documentation. The code looks like he wrote it after watching some getting started tutorial. There is no structure. Some methods and statements are just empty. And he spelt 'connection' three different ways in the same file.
God help me...1 -
Whoever thought of binding the options button to the currently opened apps and then decided also to bind it to this useless multi window shit needs to from and me the plot if the adventure of huckleberry Finn.
Worst is that I have been through the options and disabled the options button AND IT IS STILL THERE
And here I were getting all happy about using a custom ROM :<21 -
Today I had a weird dream. The mars was collapsing to earth. Weird part was when everybody panicking and screaming I was watching it getting bigger and bigger every second. I was like "woah, this is amazing". I knew there was no point being scared because everyone will die anyway. I embraced death and enjoyed my last moments. That was realy weird experience.2

Why the hell are senior engineers coming to me me to debug and figure out issues? I don't even own this code..why should I care? Does your brain stop working as soon as you see the stack trace leave the code you have written? You are getting paid more than I do so go figure it out yourself. Why are you asshats even getting paid more than me? How did you even get there if you can't debug? Again why am i getting paid less than these asshats7

Without getting into politics as much as I can, is there any black sw developer who is genuinely hurt by usage of blacklist/whitelist, master/slave terminology? Or is this sudden sensitivity a bullshit from white liberal silicon valley types who live in the most white populated, rich areas who have no lower class black/hispanic friends but still get offended on behalf of them?10

Happy New Year From Singapore!
In this year,
May all the Devs out there be able to code peacefully everyday without being disturbed by that annoying coworker.
May all the Devs out there be able to get clients who understand our pain.
May all the Devs out there be able to work on the projects that they love while getting paid proper amount.
Cheers! Love live devRant and it's community.1 -
@dfox I keep getting an error when trying to post my wk112 rant :\
It does have about 4986 characters in total...
All I get is "There was an error creating the rant."8 -
Is there a thing like getting shadowbanned from downvoting on devrant or people just running bots that automatically upvote them if they hit negative upvotes?
Whenever I downvote anything thats at 0 upvotes (for ex. even spam that just didnt get noticed, where I cant report it on desktop), it instantly gets nulled, even on the most hidden and old rants.
I dont think theres always a registered user per every single rant out there at any given time that upvotes somebody. (often very deep down the comments)13 -
Fuck tech led organisations.
I understand there are some limitations and a different way to look at things.
But fuck those product leaders who just want a stage to talk but will start shivering as soon they have to talk to their tech counterpart.
Ugh! This is annoying.
My Sr. Director has a great mind set but everyone is taking him down and he isn't getting as much support from his tech counterparts as much as he should.4 -
- TeamLeader1: Noooo, classes in JS are fake because here and there, in NodeJS they work differently from the browser because here and there, I know it
- IHateForALiving: I'm betting 50 cents against 50 bucks that you're wrong. You in?
- TeamLeader1: Uhm... no, I don't feel like betting against you about technical issues :(
It's been a months long journey, but it finally looks like we're getting somewhere.2 -
My keychain is getting heavy.
I have my house key ofcourse, then there is a short chain for my car keys, and last but not least 3 flash drives with different linux distributions -
thinking about getting a laracasts subscribtion, is it worth it at all? I've recently been working with PHP a lot, and my OOP skills are pretty narrow tbh, I wanted to learn more OOP and laravel, because there are a lot of job's that require you laravel knowledge.5

WU: Is there anyway we can help u?
Customer: I doubt it, but thank you for using WU.

I'm getting started on web development again. But I want to get the right tools for the job. I don't hate Dreamweaver. But I know there's got to be something better out there for me to use.15

EVERY COMPANY IS STRAIGHT UP REJECTING OR GHOSTING AFTER GIVING A TAKE-HOME ASSIGNMENT.
I am just tired of this at this point. I have been unemployed for over two months now. I have been constantly applying to every opportunity that I see within my limits. I've also reduced my salary expectations by significant margins.
I'd have understood if I was getting rejected after the initial screening / technical interview. But I am not even getting there.19 -
Hi ranters. We need to talk.
I've been thinking, I'm lately getting tired of code everywhere. Suppose one is a software engineer / senior developer. What is one's career path from this point on?
Tech lead? Architect? And then what? Is that all? A dead end?
Management would be also a possibility I guess. But is that a horizontal career change or are there any spots in vertical plane?22 -
I wish there was an api that tracked how many farts are getting blasted into office chairs around the world in real time10
-
There is quite possibly nothing more irritating than getting a message every couple of hours from your product owner titled - "How are you going with the task?"9
-
I turn 21 in a month, and I still have no idea what I want to pursue as a career after university or how to get there.
Sure its two years away but I feel behind already.
Also how does one go about getting an internship in the UK?
I've yet to speak to anyone from any dev industry and it's beginning to concern me.6 -
Welp. Time to ditch windows entirely! It's outlived it's usefulness, so my last windows computer is getting converted! So let's start a flamewar! To all the nonpurists out there, a question! Manjaro vs antergos? (I love arch but I'll be damned to have all my systems broken. I want at least one semi stable system)8
-
Nitrux OS
I feel that this piece of wonder isn't getting the recognition it deserves.
One of the most beautiful UIs out there, revolutionary tech like znx(booting from the main iso ALWAYS and keeping user data across reboots, in a nutshell) and it has weird ass virtualization stuff that allowed them to run windows with very little virtualization overhead(tech details yet to announce).
Imma stop here before getting labelled another fanboy, just check it out and see for yourself
Thanks for reading, i use arch btw8 -
@dfox @trogus: feature request: is there anyway to store on my profile a list of recently viewed rants? It can be for private use only.
There have been a bunch of times that I will be viewing a rant, go into safari to grab a link or find a photo, just to go back to devRant and iOS has reset the app and I can't find what that rant I was looking at. It's really frustrating.
I know getting iOS to keep the app state may be difficult but storing a list of recently viewed rants, while not the simplest, I would think is straight forward.7 -
God I'm getting tired of the whole TDD culture. I get it, testing is good, but we're getting to the point where several major OSS projects fail on common real-world use cases because instead of worrying about the main purpose of a software, devs only worry about satisfying their artificial tests. And when someone opens an issue, it just stays there for months or even years simply because setup & teardown logic for the required tests would be several times more complex than the actual fix.11
-
Is there anyone here that's been doing the job 15+ years and has hit the I can't be arsed stage? The only way stuff seems to be getting done at the moment is when I hand it over to someone else. I think it's due to not really being pushed with learning new things etc. Also 3 kids in the mix might be doing it as well. Anyone know how to dig my way out of this?7
-
I've actually really enjoyed getting to interview people. Mostly because I'm given the freedom to ask reasonable questions. At this point, my favorite is asking fresh grads to come up with requirements to make their favorite portfolio bit production-ready.
I want a list of things you need to fix because they're duct tape and bubblegum, but a lot of people sit there with passwords in plaintext and suggest new features. -
So there is this project of my firm that is comepletly dependant on Facebook api, I've actually told it many times to managers at first but they've just waved their hands over it.
Now what didn't happen. Facebook data leak and the api being taking down ..juust a week before the project going public.
Our app is still not reviewed and not able to access the so vital api and there are actually many similar projects getting published (even Facebook Local greatly rivals to our app, actually killing it because they have native data... And we don't have any. )
I told them again. "Nah we will have this and this feature that makes it soo exceptionall."
And you are sitting here thinking if the salary you have asked for is still good enough to stay or to run away.
(Well, I am still getting some coding experience from this so that's why I stay, and oh yeah I have the backend repo only for myslef because except the frontend dev no managers knows what git is. This is how freedom feels. )2 -
Was late the first day (nobody told me when to be there). Was sick as a dog. Had to pull my car over on the way there to puke. Sat through a few hours of orientation hoping I could just go the next 5 minutes without puking. Puked between orientation and actually getting to my office location. Not a fun day.
Never told anyone I was sick.1 -
A developer can never stay happy ....😪😪...
there is always a fcking bug to make him listen to bad shits instead of getting appreciation for his hardwork..2 -
So... the "boss" was getting really annoying asking for nonsense with a shitty attitude and for some stupid reason i said "I'm Mr. Meeseeks. Look at me!". The reference didn't click, but the insult was there.
That's a way to fuck things up. -
I am so fucking frustrated about aws. Ive been following a course that covers aws and deployment using EBS EC2 ECS. I use a 12 months FREE Tier plan. I go to my billing and i see i got charged. What the FUCK? Is this not a fucking scam by AWS???? You tell me i can use your services for free and then without warning or confirmation im getting billed??? FOR WHAT???? Is there a way to cancel getting billed?41

I'm in this weird place where I want a job but also want to learn new languages so that I have better chances of getting a job. I also really like learning and figuring out new ways to develop things and seeing what's out there.

Lord help me, I think I might be getting into keyboard modding.
All I really wanted to do was repair the keyboard I've used for the last 10 years. I didn't realize there was a whole hobby surrounding it.6 -
As a fan of C#, I'll be entering the world of web development with ASP.NET, but there are so many things to learn before getting started! Javascript, bootstrap, css grid stuff, angular vs react things, docker, microservices, http and REST stuff, accessing some remote thing through ssh. I feel so intimated and don't know where to start!14
-
Just because I know Laravel, Django, Angular2 and React two companies are offering me double the salary I am getting now. But I love my current work place and I might get the amount here too but maybe after six or seven months. I love it because there are better developers here than me and I am learning a lot. Is my decision to stay ok? What would have you done?(btw I am staying anyway)4
-
"(Getting) otwelld"
The state of a fallen laravel developer, after he makes a PR to the laravel or lumen documentation and the epic troll otwell closes it within a minute, with the epic meme "already there", although the documentation is absolute dogshit at places and actually merging those PRs would make sense, so not every single developer out there has to make the same mistake or debugging2 -
DUCKS! There are also some bouncy fake eggs here that I plan on getting to "hatch" a duck or two.
Way better than what I wasted on faulty knockoff lego that broke instantly.1 -
I keep getting interest for my freelance services and then people totally ghost me. This time I got all the way to “Send me your contract to sign and we’ll get started.” Several followup emails later and no response. I wish there were a way to know this outcome before I ever waste time on the back and forth.5
-
I hate Vue. There I said it. I hate components. I hate this stupid error that I keep getting. I hate that I just want a simple answer to why I keep getting this error and that seems to be difficult to find. Where is my vanilla JavaScript?3
-
Vim + Tmux = Heaven. I love it.
I'm also getting better at the hotkeys (and there are A LOT of them) so it's a really nice experience when you can do things faster than using a IDE. I only missed the auto complete, so it's very very hard sometimes (DB connection for example).
I may look crazy for going back on time using it but it's so good i can't stop.2 -
Getting off the helpdesk.
Something I've yet to accomplish. Self study and side projects will hopefully get me there.1 -
Are there any apps for Windows that automatically inverts the screen's colours if more than 50% of pixels are white/bright colours or smth like that?
I'm sick of getting jumpscared by light themes.2 -
This last week I have been so excited about Artemis going around the moon. This is the kind of stuff that people need. Stop bickering about bullshit. There is a universe to explore!
I saw parts of the flyby today and it was really really cool. I hope NASA is getting incredible data from this. I cannot wait until we send people there again. Probably better to use robots, but going there in person is cool. -
Zoom free tier calls end after 40 minutes.
Idea: pwyw conference software where the call ends after 40 minutes if the host isn't paying €5 more monthly than everyone else in the call. There is no way to discover whether this is a limited call until the 40 minute mark, and there's no way to discover who outbid the host at all except by getting everyone to show their bank statement.1 -
This is getting kind of annoying now. Everytime i am planned for a (small) project, there is less to no briefing and nobody has a clue what to do.
Then how the hell am i supposed to?2 -
Hey so this just came up and i have no idea how could i ddg this so ill just ask here.
I know you can use namespace{} in typescript but is there something similar in js (es6)? We are making a game and the variable names are getting scarce so it would be nice if we could like menu.offset or something. I know static variables in classes are a thing but im asking about namespace-y stuff here.3 -
Android force-updated itself without my permission and it appears they've removed the "open applications" menu altogether. If not, it's well and completely hidden.
Getting fucking sick of my phone and other devices being at the mercy of Mommy Microsoft, Daddy Google and Auntie Apple. Fuck them. I have zero control over my electronics anymore.
EDIT: It's there, but it only works if you're already in an app - not from the home screen. Because that makes fucking sense.3 -
Getting into the third hour of trying to run an android studio emulator on ryzen.
Significant progress is made though, now instead of not working and giving 9 errors, its still not working, but at least there are no more errors being reported... -
How we devs hate getting humiliated on stack overflow when we don't get the answer and someone make us feel stupid for even posting the question.
How we also secretly wish for that validation and feel proud when there are more likes on our questions.
No? Just me? Ok cool 👍5 -
!really a rant
To all the devRanters that are getting hit by Irma: wish you the best of luck and stay safe over there!
The news I'm receiving here in Italy are quite terrifying.
Stay safe and get back to ranting when everything has stabilized. We need you! -
I don’t love to code. It kinda sucks, TBH. I love to make money and get closer to a hopefully early retirement. Coding is only part of how I’m getting there.4

!Rant
I can remember a while ago, I went to a meetup, and listened to some guys speaking about angular 2.
And I thought good for them! One day I might get proficient enough to speak about something before this many people, while actually knowing the topic well enough for it.
Today, I held a presentation before 70+ guys about Vue & Quasar framework at the exact same place. Wasn't flawless ofc, but they said I pretty much nailed it.
I'll treasure it as a great accomplishment for years to come. Love my job! 🙂 -
I don't know what the fuck is happening rn I created repo on gitlab and tried to make changes from terminal it refused. Tried every fucking combination as I thought I must be doing something wrong .
Got fed up made a new account , made a new repo but gitlab doesn't allow me to upload files from there fucking website too.
Now I am getting error 500 from terminal because I can't clone my repo as it says this repo doesn't exist.
Now I can only imagine that there might be some problem with gitlab it's 4 in the morning, I should probably sleep. -
There is a moment in a project where you either tell everybody that they have fucked up everything and a new beginning is necessary... Or you will be the one who's getting fucked in the end as 'the constant warnings and delays were communicated, but not offensive enough to be of major importance.'
-
SO sucks.
I'm looking for a community there I can learn good code practices through code review, but getting into a huge established open source project is really intimidating. Anyone have any good suggestions? My skill set is mostly Java and go2 -
I usually like PHP, because it is easy to use, but FUCK! Can you just let me free the fucking memory by myself? Setting variable to null doesn't work, unset doesn't work either. I am still getting fucking memory exhausted error.
There is literally no data stored anywhere, because I unset every fucking thing.
gc_collect_cycles() doesn't work either, probably because this crap thinks there is a reference for this variable somewhere.12 -
Applying for a new job and got an assignment for a quick dashboard as a test, whoever designed the HTTP client in Angular should be thrown down a fucking building.rant your mother is getting piped let's react to a fucking request pipe here pipe there performing a request and getting a result naaaah to fucking easy12

Hey, flutterists! I'm getting curious.
Google gives me some hits, dunno how reliable they are. So here are my 2 questions:
1. Can I use flutter to develop for ios? Does the same code work on ios and droid?
2. Is there a way to use .jar libs in flutter? I have some custom tools I'd like to reuse.8 -
Adding a couple functions to free software, rebranding, then selling to customers.
I know that there are other companies that do this, but still feels like stealing from the authors and ripping off customers at the same time.
Maybe I am too sensitive, but I'm deeply disturbed by this and I'm having a really hard time getting work done.5 -
I've been drunk quite a lot lately, yet i'm not tryna forget or quit anything. Am i getting alcoholic ? This create a lot of bad situation going around my life, sleep deprivation, health problem, etc..
Am i thinking my work and my company to seriously? Last time i work too hard, i got hospitalized for exhaustion. My brain can't stop thinking, always getting left and right, here and there. Am i getting crazy?13 -
A new year, a new job.
After a years hard graft learning front end code I finally landed my first dev job!
Even though the job is a while away, there will be nothing stopping me getting there and learning all I can in this industry.

iPhones have never been more unlockable, as literally a picture of someone on your phone can be used to unlock their phone.
On the subject, I would also like to know what the point of an unlock is? If a criminal has my phone, they are stealing it, period. If a good Samaritan has it and wants to identify the owner, they can't because there is a lock.
This means that the only potential way that I am ever getting it is that there is no lock and a good person found it.3 -
Remember kids, passwd is a readable file! You can have a very bad day trying to figure out a user's shell from side-channel attacks and getting nowhere, or you could remember that it LITERALLY SAYS WHAT IT IS PUBLICLY IF YOU DON'T FORGET THAT IT'S THERE.
On the plus side, I learned a ton about what you can do with ssh arguments and debugging logs. Shit's pretty cool.5 -
Not a rant, just to mention, if someone is interested in getting started with k8s ( like me ) there is the summer of k8s - https://getambassador.io/summer-of-... if you want to give it a try

Is there any other there that start getting so anxious when programming that bites all nails like me? 10 years without the need for a nail cutter

When I first got Linux, then fell in love with diving through the system on the command line. Then I also realised I finally had the confidence to learn what I wanted, instead of what was advised to me.
Still in no way confident with programming, but I'm getting there. -
So how does dead code from 2007 still exist in this codebase, better yet why were there three of the exact same page literally no differences lmfao. Spent a moment having confused QA guys talk to me getting me confused because they couldn't replicate the solution that had been applied to all three versions of the page.

1. Working with GitHub for a school project (teachers need to check my code there)
2. Getting flagged by GitHub spam-bot for no actual reason
3. Cry -
at the co-working space where I work today there was an argument between the CEO of this startup and their developer.
not really sure what it was about but at the end the developer was getting really frustrated and he shouted: "I'm telling you REST means HTTP!!".
I think all the developers around vomited on their keyboard.2 -
In my first dev role I commented out the code for sending acknowledgement emails when a user placed their order, and didn't realize when I committed it. It got pushed to production and we found it a week or so later.
Was probably a factor in me getting sacked from there.4 -
I've said this before, but i always get the spot I'm hoping for. there was one time i got rejected though.
i met a colleague during the interview process, and really thought he was getting that spot, he was much more qualified than the other participants. there was about another 4, out of which 3 still looked like good competition. the 4th one got there late, couldn't form a coherent sentence to save his life and had no job experience.
guess who they picked :v5 -
I am getting really close to actually FINISHING the avatar editor, this took way less than I anticipated but there are still many bugs in that thing that I haven’t discovered yet and that I have already discovered.4

There is a pretty popular job search site I have used for quite some time. I wanted to close my account due to spam phone calls and emails. The website has no ui for closing your account. I fly into a fit of rage and change my email address to 20 random characters @gmail.com. Now I still have an account there but can't log in. Still getting the spam.4

Never used a mac computer before but I need a new laptop and I'm considering the option of getting a macbook. I use ubuntu so I would have a dualboot but I would really want to get into iOS development. Does anyone have experience with running Ubuntu on a macbook? Does it work well out of the box? Is there anything I'd need to think about?7

So people are getting new jobs left and right, and there are several others looking for new jobs including me...
Well... now the CIO is following people around the office and watching them walk to their car and stuff. To me this just makes the situation worse.
If he's so worries about people leaving then why doesn't he hire people instead of trying drive everyone out? -
I really love freelancing and I'm getting a few projects here and there ,maybe once in a few months.but I'm currently studying so those few projects does financially reward me a bit. Why TF does nodejs just eats 100mb of ram away for a simple application with ONE websocket connection ? I've tried getting some heap snaps, memory allocation timelines and used memwatch-next, but to no result AT ALL! Since the heap stay small but the rss memory grows like there is no tomorrow.

Why do I keep getting an error when posting my rant saying, "There was an error creating the rant."?
Has anyone else gotten this before? Happening both on mobile app, mobile browser, and laptop's browser so it's not the platform.
EDIT: So this rant went through so it must be something in that specific rant. It's pretty long.8 -
Traveled South East Asia for 1.5 months and now getting back to work!
What did I miss? How many new JS frameworks are there now? Did AI replaced us yet?1 -
Is there a good place to post code and have people comment on the style or the logic? I'd love to start getting feedback on my code and break bad habits before they become too ingrained. Plus, our first project is a blackjack game, I'm working through it pretty well but I'm a little stuck and I think it's completely because I'm paranoid I'm not doing it well/right (even though I probably am).2

Is there one thing right with this page's css? If they can't get such an easy thing right, why would I trust them on getting their server software right?
-
I came to a new school this year and didn't know anyone. I found out that there is a kid who likes to code, so I tried getting friendly with him.
Well, he knows HTMl/CSS...
Well, he just does Wordpress...
Well, he actually likes design better...
I've seen someone else who was trying to learn JS, learn with him, and the kid couldn't wrap his head around what a function did...4 -
Had to take my Raspberry Pi 3 out of this case I printed, because the thing was getting way to hot for PLA plastic, and that was just running IDLE or VNC! A much cooler B+ and a Pi 2 reside in there now!5

Install Linux they said, it's better than a blue screen windows they said, THERE IS NO LINUX DRIVER OR NDISWRAP SUPPORT FOR MY WIFI ADAPTER I'M BASICALLY IN THE SAME BLOODY SPOT BUT WITH A PRETTIER TERMINAL! The reason for getting a blue screen in the first place was a bloody fucked up wifi driver!!!! I both love and hate you guys7

I usually don't do these types of posts, but it's a nice number, and i feel lucky to have caught it. Usually I just miss it by a few and then my next rant gets too many ++ and I just miss it.2

I fucking hate my current job. I switched to this one a few months ago, since my last one was getting stale after being there for nearly a decade.
I'm currently considering to return to my last position. Did somebody face a similar situation? Got a new position, only to realize that it sucks?2 -
I fucking hate sleep destroying on-call. I'd rather you just euthanize me and put me out of my fucking misery.
This idiocy of comparing most dev. on calls it to doctors to on call is fucking stupid unless maybe you're in health care and lives actually might be on the line. Pretty sure a fair number of doctors wouldn't wanna be on call and would rather sleep.
It also doesn't helps that it's not in my contract, I'm not getting paid for it, and I stupidly believed HR when they said I wouldn't need to. Should've trusted the dev.s when interviewing said there is. No way I'm getting out of on call without being fired when we're all on rotation.2 -
Question Is there anything Linux doesn't support
I feel like it's too perfect lol
I just started getting into Linux a few months ago learning in my in my free time (on break now so yay:D more time) so I apologize if this is a stupid question3 -
Im done with C++ i want to learn new language. Is there any good language to learn ? I heard JS getting really popular and python is going up those day. Any idea ?18

Apparently work in progress submissions of our assignments were graded by the percentage of their completion.
So yeah... there was no way of getting 100% unless you had the assignemt compete. Spoler alert! Nobody got 100%... even if all the assignment criteria were met.
And the best thing is that he got the percentages by asking each student after their presentation...
Now I get why he was boasting so much, that only few of his students get A. -
There is a fine line between chic corporate speak and not cool corporate neologisms.
Then there are these gems from the client:

Is there anyone here who is expert in Microsoft Sql server. Am getting error while connecting to local database.8

Hi 👋
Is there a good alternative to using a MacBook Pro?
I'm in the process of getting new hardware for work.14 -
I'm thinking of getting a laptop for both gaming and video editing. I currently am thinking of getting a laptop with either a 7th gen i5 or 8th gen i5. Is there a huge difference in performance between the two generations? Is the 8th gen i5 core worth the extra money?5

I don’t mind taking over a project when there is a structure and logic. Normally the problem is messy code which I can work around.
It’s a different story though when there’s model stuff in the controller and views or sometimes views calling controller functions or loading other views. I don’t even know, flicking between files, recompiling and not getting the result makes me agitate because I’m unproductive.3 -
I posted on this topic earlier but am facing another big hurdle to getting work done. I am working on a project that requires another team to deploy a package so my part will work. To get this team to do anything there a million reasonable questions asked, followed by a change meeting that you have to attend, catch is they won't tell you where the meeting is. That's my hurdle.1

YES! YES! YEEEEES! FINALLY!
I've been trying to get some systems to run successfully on docker swarm. Now forget a regular swarm, there have issues just getting it to pass CI builds, and Finally, YES FINALLY it passed!!!!
I now need to pass my self on the back... -
Why Windows 11 is trying to be mac os (at least look wise)? The more I use it, the more I am getting irritate. All the ui from windows 10 is still there, so why add extra sugar candy just to look different than windows 10. Many things require more clicks and more typing now.9

Just spent half a day trying to figure out why the hell were my automation scrips not running.
"There was an exception but the IE JS engine didn't return any error message"
Very helpful
Turns out the dropdowns that looked the same weren't the same. There was a different table for each selected radio button that was getting displayed and the dev tools didn't reflect that in real time.
I managed to notice after spending a while in table hell (we're talking 4-levels deep nested tables)1 -
Any X11 people in devrant?
Is there a way to listen to child window events from a parent?
I'm getting all the `XFocusChangeEvent`s if I use the root window, but then I can't get the original window integers where those events are happening.6 -
So I'm doing angular 2 and I've started to notice that the time it takes to setup my website with al it's dependencies is becoming quite long. I know that longer load times are expected the bigger the site gets, but this is getting ridiculous.
Are there any general methods to reduce load times?1 -
There was a holiday in my area but someone reported that Google map is showing that roads are blocked instead of no traffic.
Ah! they forgot to improve their algorithms to analyze the traffic by getting user's location "without permission" against festivals in India. -
I know it's all for good reason, but man are there so many hoops to jump through to get a web server set up through HTTPS. registering the domain, getting the SSL certs, configuring the DNS, setting up the firewall rules.. what a pain6
-
There are so many frameworks out there that already have their ways to connect the client application with the server one and then from the former to a Database, that I'm wondering how someone can build such server applications(for example in C++), then connect them to a Database (for example SQLite) and setup all the network configuration for a server running from home without getting mad2

I have a question for the freelancers out there. When getting work, do you usually go through some sort of vetting process from the person or group hiring you? It seems that the company I work for doesn't do anything if the sort and I want to know if that is something a company should do.1
-
oh ok
my SSI (that I got due to low-income family and being a minor) is still coming in despite supposedly ending after last month's payment
cool
if it's still there by the third week or so i'll just keep the $350 lol
if i keep getting paid i'm not gonna complain lol
(wait, the taxpayers might. SHIT)2 -
It's pain in the ass, when you finally managed to free enough memory to keep your android os up-to-date and just a few minutes after update restart getting a message that there is an os update, which needs another 200mb.
It's a never-ending torture..4 -
Just a warning to Web Dev's out there. My university has taken to marking our web coursework by "machine marking".
The necessary steps to getting full marks? Upload files with the specified name and extension and voila! No need to worry about code quality or whether it works. Full Marks!
Misspelled a single file name? Straight 0.
Nothing. -
Germany set a minimum wadge of around 1.8k€ without taxes the month... Now every business which would normally pay more pays 1.8k€... Thanks, Germany, for getting into financial trouble when retired...
What's your best strategy to make a company get into trouble when you're not there?3 -
(!rant)
I need an advise...
I am quite used to work in PHP. But I feel like it's getting older and older. Is there another comparable language? I'm thinking about Ruby or something...
What do you think? Do you have a more modern language in mind? Is it easy to use?21 -
I'm a junior dev and my senior is not getting around to reviewing my tickets. Now there are multiple months-old tickets that still have to be reviewed. That feature should have been released months ago and it has not yet been reviewed.
Soon the (only) senior dev will go on a holiday and it feels kinda useless to continue to develop stuff that takes forever to be reviewed.
In the past 1 week, there is one ticket reviewed and there are 10 more in review. :')
It's not like it's a big team... 3 devs (The senior, me and another junior (who is on leave for the past 2 weeks for personal reasons).1 -
The PO asked if there were a couple of scripts he could run to get counts of specific things in the production database.
after a few days and iterations I'm now getting suggestions from him on how to create and drop temp tables -
I’ve been building event-based systems for a few years.
Now I am with a company building MVC apps with ruby-on-rails. (Well, actually the V is handled by React)
To all the the good Rails developers out there:
What advice do you have to getting into this thing very fast. I’ve got video courses from UDemy and the docs but are there any hidden diamonds in the rough out there I should check out?5 -
After a damn amount of time I've been considering it (a lot of data in there and I'm lazy), I've finally wiped the android clean (dalvik+cache+the rest). Happened exactly what I was expecting:
All in-app errors (even devRant feed) magically disappeared. So, if you experience something like that, don't be lazy and wipe.
Also there's speeding up of the system and other pros of wiping, but those aren't that important like getting rid of errors ^^5 -
So I am gonna build a bashrc from scratch again.
There is just one thing messes me right now:
I don't know how to avoid the bug(?) described at the bottom.
Last time when I made one, used a line break, but whenever I went back in the command history and there is a long command (chain) it just messes up whole PS1 by getting inside, pressing backspace furiously to get the start of the command (mostly eating half of the PS1) and an up and a down to get back to command and see it properly.
Any good ideas to destroy that bug while it isn't born yet?1 -
One very important thing.
Just thought about getting a supporter today. Clicked the button on my Android, and then stopped back.
As app developer I know, there is a 30-40% fee according to the platform for selling this.
Then I tried on the webpage, my thought behind was, your getting the full money. No possiblity there.
Is that because of tax reasons? I would be glad to support you.10 -
I keep getting texts from KappAhl and it's impossible to unsubscribe, hence their ads can only be classified as spam. There should be an AdBlocker for SMS.3

To the Backend Ninjas out here.
Ive written rest APIs before but know I'm asking myself how I would implement user messaging for my app.?
Use Rest and poll the server?
Use websockets and keep the connection to the server?
Or is there something that I don't know?
Man I'm getting old Everyday there are thousands of new things....6 -
Getting something working that you've been stuck on for two weeks, despite telling the client, your pm and your boss that there is a much easier and quicker way to do it that doesn't involve downloading over 1000 pngs and storing them as base64 strings to form a massive pdf, damn android and it's lack of native pdf viewing

I am just recently getting into podcasting. I have all the equipment and am working on ideas at the moment.
I believe I have some knowledge worth sharing both in dev and in other aspects of life.
Do any other podcasters, YouTubers, Instagramers etc have any great advice?
Was there some things that you thought you knew but turned out to be untrue? Any commonly held beliefs that you found not to hold up? -
How can you avoid getting burned out/what can you do once you get there?
I've been feeling burnt out for the last couple of months or so, and it's really starting to affect my work+personal projects.6 -
I want to start contributing to open source softwares, but I don't know whom to approach or what is the criteria if there is some for getting selected in open source softwares.
I read many articles on the internet, all of them mentioned what activities one can do in an OSS, but neither mentioned of how to approach them.
Please someone give me a route of getting into OSS.7 -
Anybody read the Game Programming Gems series? Are they any good? Are there better alternatives? I'm thinking of getting one or two but have no idea if they're actually worth it or whether they're outdated or were never very good to begin with.8

Not directly software related but I am a freelancer paying outright for health insurance. I got a letter yesterday saying the health care I am buying is getting cancelled because there are too many unhealthy people on the on the ACA plans. Everyone in my family is healthy and work out. The insurance was 936.00 per month. Now what?3

I have been learning android dev in android studio for the past 20 days from the book "Head First Android Development" and as I am starting new chapters, there are always new methods, inner classes... of new widgets getting introduced to me and it's getting hard to memorize all these stuff!
Can someone give me some advice? In serious need of help.
Do all the professional android developers keep a guide with them while they are developing apps?5 -
Has anyone felt the need to go back to school after finishing their 4 year degree? There are a handful of reasons why I want to, but for some reason it seems like it might be a waste of time/money.
On the other hand I miss the atmosphere, constant learning, and feeling like I'm a part of a community. Although getting a paycheck is nice.
Any thoughts/input?2 -
Been working on integrating mail gun into the MVP of the webapp I am creating. Couldn't figure out why I kept getting a 400 response. Check the mail gun documentation and realize that it's expecting post parameters not JSON...
Well there goes those 5 hours. -
As the winter months approach I've been thinking about freelancing. I decided to setup a website( jQuery!) with my games( unity, unreal all that shizzle). However what are some tips on getting out there with the website? Should I AdSense? Or should I go and advertise on Reddit( post on subreddits). Or contact peeps directly asking if they need my services( how do I know who 🤔). Or am I missing something?
Please tell me in the comments below -
Today I had a look at the Linux kernel on GitHub. There was a commit made by someone else which I tried to comment on. But my comment was not getting added— probably because it is not my PR. Is this a feature or a bug ?10

Moral dilemma :
You inharit a task from your team expert (big ego there) he estimated this before sprint as hard 10 days (with overtime).
You have finished it in a very relaxed 4 days (I agree a lot of code was written but that's life).
Now there is the dillma :
If you declare it done by this time you are the rockstar but you getting a very influencing enemy you made him look like a fool...
If you wait do a psaudo work for the remaining time . It's just laying.. And there is 50% your cover will be blown....
What would you do?5 -
Anyone who tells you there is no time constraint is on drugs. There's no such thing. At best, there are just secret deadlines that crop up as you're getting close. It's just a fucking con to get you to build unimportant shit, and work your ass off to meet some artificial deadline at the end.

Any tips on getting contracts? I know this can be “googled” but maybe someone else out there has some interesting tips that don’t show up at the top of the search results. Im a full stack engineer in the US, mostly React, Node, MySQL2

I’m new to using gdb to debug. It could detect the places where I was getting SIGSEGV randomly. But there are also rare cases when the program just gets segmentation fault as soon as it starts, and it when that happens, even my gdb gets frozen and I have to shut down my terminal altogether.
What’s with this ? Is this some sort of kernel error (like Bus error) ? I’m using macOS Catalina and gdb 9.1.2 -

Any tips for getting into the freelance game?
I’m a FE dev (React / TS / Next) with a11y certs and 7+ yrs of experience, but am wondering how I can get my first clients freelancing?

When there are multiple third party services getting used in your spring boot application. How do you manage their API creds.
Like I use Aws Secret Manager for the keys and different account level info. But after fetching in the application in runtime should we create classes to hold such info or just class variables are enough?
I'm more curious about the coding standard practices of different developers in the globe.10 -
Trying to build something that makes me rich by learning. Started ReactJS Going through events, state and props again. Really beginning to make progress. Will continue with tutorial tomorrow, and see how it goes. I really am uncertain wtf they expected of people as a ticket to a time where everything continues and our lives are on track because other than getting laid alot there was an obvious hiatus from living an affluent lifestyle excepting where I stayed and who I had sex with heh
Seems like they always invent excuses to roll everything back -
Guys do you use strictly Docker or an alternative, I installed Docker desktop, i tried to install nextcloud-all-in-one but i was getting errors and never got success even through the gui interface, is it a better idea to install it in a docker container or not? and if there is way more simpler alternative then what are those choices?1

Here I am sitting again to explain to some nice people that it is not my service causing the havoc but the infrastructure.
Always getting cached content when using the public route (private is fine). When I firstly hit something it should cache then I get that content for every url I hit on that service (e.g. Getting the favicon when fetching the html)
Even when I stop the service the public route does still return content. Let's see if they accept that there may be a caching issue 😥😥😥 ah and the service is running in 2 other environments - must be an application problem
