Just signed a contract for a new room!
This means I'll be going from 500kbs to a general 30-50mbs 😍21 -
Dear Client.
Please don't whine why your site is down, you haven't paid us in like 3 months, and its on the contract that you signed, we only have limited patience.
sincerely yours,
developer7 -
Merch package signed by dfox himself :D
Maybe I should keep that part, should we ever blow up like Facebook hehehe26 -
The story of the $500,000,000 error.
In 1996, an unmanned Ariane 5 model rocket was launched by the European Space Agency.
Onboard was software written to analyze the horizontal velocity of the spacecraft. A conversion between a 64-bit floating point value and a 16-bit signed integer within this software ultimately caused an overflow error just forty seconds after launch, leading to a catastrophic failure of the spacecraft.
That day, $7 billion of development met it's match: a data type conversion.12 -

Signed up for an Android course at my uni and expected to have some fun with Android Studio and modern app development technologies...
Turns out that we're working with Blockly (no coding). We will write our exam with Blockly. The course is mandatory and I cannot opt out.
I've been a dev since 7 years and I am dead inside already.13 -
If I could represent my life using 32-bit signed integers, you would be -2,147,483,648 because you are the Most Significant Bit of my life ❤9

I’ve been on devRant for around a year or so but only just signed up. Hello everyone.
Today was my last day at work. It’s time for me to start my own business rather than constantly work for one. I have an idea for an app so we’ll see how that goes.
Wish me luck!20 -
Welcome everyone.
Today I signed my first contract!!!
Front end
Part time
I'm 30.
This is still a start13 -
##Real fuckening STORY##
Angry client: this feature is not working like we discussed !
Me: it is.. *giving some explanation*
Client : no, this is not the right way
Me: But this is what we documented while gathering requirements, and YOU signed in the documentation..
Client : that long document? you don't expect me to read all of that talk just for this simple feature..
Me inside: *killing him 5 times in 5 different ways13 -
YouTube recommendations are like when you tell your mom that you enjoyed a classical music concert, and the next day she has bought you a cello and signed you up for classes.
JUST BECAUSE I WATCHED ONE FUCKING DUMB COOKING SHOW, DOESN'T MEAN I WANT ALL MY CAREFULLY CURATED CONTENT ABOUT PROGRAMMING AND SCIENCE REPLACED WITH CELEBRITIES TRYING OUT VEGAN BARF WRAPS.11 -
I usually don’t use caps so I apologize but.... HOLY FUCKING SHIT! MY PERSONAL BUSINESS THAT I BUILT WITH My HANDS HAS JUST SIGNED A ****HUGE**** contract!! More to come!13
-
This is why I love working where I work. I worked extra hours until 9pm to get an ITest environment ready for one of my customer teams. I came in this morning to a little prezzie and a thank you card signed by the entire customer team. This is what awesome culture looks like.10

Coworker: hey man, do you know what is the limit for z-index on CSS?
Me: not sure but I think it is the signed int limit.
Coworker: the waaat?
Me inside: GET THE FUCK OUT OF HERE!!!!!!!7 -
Client: I have lost everything on the cloud holy crap!
Me: Are you signed into your google drive, and within the folder?
Client: No, how do i do that again? I obviously cant be bothered reading your well formated and instructional guide and would rather contact you at 6pm on a saturday night8 -
- "Finance are too busy to look at this"
- "Finance have too much to do"
- "We can't this sorted at the minute because finance are overloaded"
Finance just sent me a request for "detailed description" for each business trip i've made. Attached is a spreadsheet report with 122 columns detailing every facet of my travel expenses that they have recorded so far. Not even just one row per trip, but one row per item, like:
- Trip 1 - Airport parking: .....
- Trip 1 - Airfare Outbound: ....
- Trip 1 - Airfare Inbound: ....
This is way you are too busy, because this is fucking ridiculous. Fix your shitty process and stop bitching.
FYI, your "detailed descriptions" can be found in the contracts we've signed, which outline all the travel needs, which you've already reviewed and signed off on. Get your shit together and stop bugging me4 -

Oh boy, my fellow devRanters, I just signed an 4 digit monthly salary (that's a lot in Lithuania) job contract, I'm a future Unix infrastructure engineer :o
As per original concept of ranting, it's been almost two months since I wrote for the stickers and didn't get a reply >:(11 -
Just wanted to say a 'thank you' to all people who bear with my privacy stuffs! I know quite some people who installed messaging apps, signed up to privacy services and so on, solely because --> I <-- want to communicate in private and I realise (I've always realized that though) that that can be tough sometimes.
Also a thank you to those people for not requiring me to get data fed into the big companies :).
Thanks!24 -
Initially:
Me: "I'm becoming a web developer"
Extended Family: "You're going to ruin your life"
2 Years Later:
Me: "I just signed contracts with companies X Y and Z"
Extended Family: "Working without a degree will get you nowhere"
Dad: "he's attending X uni and has a y% scholarship"
Extended Family: *no comments*3 -
My Skype was hacked and spam links was sent to everyone.
I guess i deserved it since i haven't updated the password since i've signed up to skype 11 years ago.
Still very annoying.3 -

I'm in grade 9.
I started a programming club in my school.
I told them that I'd teach basic HTML,JS,CSS,C++,C,Java.
Nobody signed up.
Because it happens on Thursdays.
FML.
However, people told other people that I have wicked programming skills and so one of the school staff asked me to help them maintain their school website, which is currently just Google Sites (*vomit).

Fucking fuck you fucking fucked up fuckery.
I got fired and signed mortgage at the same day. Well looks like next two months going to be fun.
Time to get drunk.20 -
Thanks GDPR, for practically and efficiently unsubscribing me from almost everything I forgot I was ever/not signed up for. My inbox is going to be a lot cleaner after this tsunami of confirmations, and I didn't even have to lift a finger!3

Currently in the middle of quarterly planning (its been fun so far). Needs to be signed off by business today.
- My team has ~25 man weeks available in terms of capacity.
- Looking at only priority 0 tasks, last night we calculated the ask from product stands at 64.
- Including P1's, P2's etc. its well over 100 man weeks.
- Email was sent around from business with a list of tasks, asking which can be dropped, de-scoped etc.
Product (non technical) response this morning:
- This one can't take 2 weeks, its not that complicated.
- This one needs to stay, It was originally a Q1 task.
- Can we make this one smaller? (currently only a 3 week task)
- 14 comments on other teams items.
<extreme-sarcasm>
... ah perfect, that cut down the items by less than half. We are now ready for the deadline in 4 hours to have all this signed off on. Great job everyone. Thanks for all the insightful discussions. Go team!
</extreme-sarcasm>6 -
So the team I joined has been producing garbage software in C# for 10+ years. The solution proposed by the tech lead - start using Java because it’s better than C#, that’s why we have problems. This actually gets signed off by management. Why did I choose this career?19

So I just created this Registration GUI (part of a bigger app) for my uni project and was demonstrating how good the app was to all my friends.
Suddenly someone came and said let me verify this. I said go on with a doubtful mind. Obviously I had some verification for all the fields in the GUI but I was closely watching him.
He signed up with this email: " @ . "
😞10 -
FOR FUCK SAKE APPLE! HOW THE HELL ARE YOU STILL IN THIS WORLD!
Was creating a signed file of the app to upload to their store and while XCode (that bitch!) was working on it, Slack, and Postman crashed!

I signed up to devRant today and so far it's been amazing. Super great community. Even though i couldn't stop wondering why toby wasn't taken, "Toby" i believe is a very familiar name, Im glad anyways that I didn't have to think for about 2 hrs for another handle.
Looking forward to great things here. ☺4 -
Fuck, I am really exhausted.
I am really burnt-out, I can't do this shit anymore.
Fuck this shit, here is my letter of resignation.

dammit. I fucking hate it when I get stuck because of low level computing concepts and there is no explanation on Google.
like.. I understand the difference between an int and a float, but no one ever explains how you convert 32bit signed vectors to floats. or how bgra and rgba differ. or how to composite two images on a GPU. etc. the internet is great and all, but fuck, sometimes it seems as everyone is just as dumb as I am.4 -

So finished a project for a client, the client signed a contract. He signed off that all milestones where reached. Text me that he was very pleased.
We give 30 days to pay. 8 days before the due date he asked for a meeting, telling us he wants to go another direction and he wants the source code to show the new development team he's going with to get a quote from them. I tell him that, that's fine he can have the source files once he pays for the product which was in the contract they signed mind you!! And this FUCKING DICK FART threats to sue, saying he's calling his lawyer, threatening me and my development partner with physical violence, and saying he's going to sue me personally not because me work was bad but because I refused to give him the product before he paid. I was calm we offered to meet his new dev team explain the code, and show them what they needed to see to give the clients a quote and they would not allow that, saying how now I'm not getting paid instead I'm getting sued and that he will publicly shame my startup company. Just complete bullshit, good thing I saved the original contract he wanted me to sign which had threats of physical violence I. His contract... Which in retrospect should have been a hint, but it was the highest paying contract we ever landed. Seems he never planned on paying. What's a guy to do?26 -
Fucking IT and their self signed corporate proxy SSL bullshit getting in the way of anything that needs to verify SSL requests,
Fuck you for making my day a slow and miserable day and having to resort to forcing rest apis and SDKs to work over HTTP instead, all in the name of “Security”.2 -
So I signed up for my first hackathon two weeks ago, which is today.
AND YESTERDAY I GET AN EMAIL WHERE THEY'RE LIKE "sorry but there are too many people who signed up so we couldn't sign you up"

OR MAYBE UPDATE THE FUCKING DESCRIPTION TO TELL THE PEOPLE WHO SIGN UP AND ARE REALLY EXCITED RIGHT AWAY YOU'RE FULL!!!!

Worst: I lost development contract - probably due to covid - after 4 years of work. I got email when I was at bank seconds before signing mortgage for my first apartment.
I signed it anyways as a technically unemployed person without income looking at the world collapsing.
Best: I gained new contract with 40% money raise. Fuck yeah ! -
I signed the contract for my first software developer job! I just want to thank everybody here that’s pushed me to do better, challenged my assumptions, and contributed to my growth as a dev and person. You all are great.7

I finally signed my severance package deal today!
I think this work relationship couldn't have had any happier ending than this.
So many years of unhappiness to be replaced by a new job and brighter opportunities next year. I am so looking forward to it! -
Finally handed in my resignation. It’s a lengthy one, so that’s going to sting on Monday haha.
However, I signed a new contract Friday, better pay, better benefits, pension etc.
Onwards and upwards, feels good.9 -
Marketing : Do you think we can implement this feature in a system?
Dev : Hmm....*checking specs*...This will...
Marketing : *interrupts* we have already signed a contract with a client.
Dev : ugh......7 -
Signed up on Trello, got everything set up there and everyone has an account.
But my dear PM, why the hell are you still sending out a screenshot of your bloody spreadsheet bug tracker and ask everyone for updates????
Fellow devRanters how do I get (force) my PM to use a project management system instead of silly tables?11 -
When meeting other devs, I'm always wondering if they are on devRant too...
Just went to a company to sign a contract for my internship in the summer holidays and there were 3 other people at about my age. 🤔
I thought about opening devRant in the elevator to see their reactions but it was very full and I couldn't do it...
Anyways if anyone reading this, just signed a contract, the ugly guy was me!4 -

Falling sick on the weekend after a long week is probably the worst feeling ever.
I missed enjoying with cousins. I missed a 10k run I had signed up for. I missed coding.
Found devRant at the right time I guess - the only silver lining.

Prior 6 months as an apprentice, no prior formal education, self-taught since the age of 12, and I'm 20 now.

Long time ago i signed up to Devrant. After this i relocated... Finally bought me a new #Toy :)
Happy to be back and to see some old names 🙂🙂🙂5 -
Working as a new employee: no wifi. No work. 10 new tools to get familiair with. 41 new people to get to know. No workstation. No desk. No signed contract.
So far so good.4 -
Hmm, I find it highly peculiar that I let a friend borrow my pc to watch stranger things on Netflix, with her account.
I signed her into the guest account, she picked Google Chrome (not signed in).
Now my Facebook feed and YouTube adds are all about stranger things..
I get the ip gets logged & mapped.. But srsly.5 -
I generated a graph that shows how average score in StackOverflow is falled down over the years.
So if you only have 100 points and your friend that signed up in 2008 has 400'000 points, this can be a reason.
Or maybe this is just an excuse that I'm telling to myself to don't cower and cry, who knows.

Dev's talking about feeling bad for having no reputation on stackoverflow, meanwhile I don't even remember my username or the email I used when I signed up 😂3

I was about sign-out and collegue comes running that something is urgent and can't wait till next day.
I said fuck off to his face and told him to go and resume his tik-tok video. I signed out and left office. Next day he reported me to HR. Disciplinary action will taken against me starting next week.
Awesome 😎4 -

fucking hate how some sites deliberately break their own scroll functionality if you haven't logged in/accepted gdpr nonsense/signed up for a newsletter.
It's such an easy fix (most of them just slap style="overflow:hidden;" to their <html> tag) but I still think it's very loathsome1 -

Dear Apple: FIX YOUR FUCKED UP IDE!
Generating IPA file takes ages, freezes the shit out of the mac and to make it even worse a full clean -> build -> Generate Signed APK on slow ass gradle takes barely 5 minutes while XCode takes ages9 -
I have not researched it so I'm not sure if this is a widely known thing but I figured out a sort of hacky way to get a max integer value:
-Declare an unsigned int.
-Subtract 1
-Divide 2
That is your max signed int value
int main(){
unsigned int a = 0;
a--;
std::cout << a / 2 << std::endl;
}7 -
\n and \n\r
What a fuckton of issues those two characters brought me today while attempting to verify a signed file.10 -
Yup, sure our team of three devs will build you a fully functioning e-commerce site from scratch that grabs data from several APIs and uploads it to several more.
You need it in two weeks? No problem.
Me: Wait...what the...?!
One week in and I only have access to test one of the four necessary APIs as the client hasn't signed the necessary paperwork with other providers.7 -
True story:
A guy worked at a company as a very important programmer.
No matter the assignment, he would get it done.
It turns out he played Internet games all day and had outsourced his work to a Chinese company for 10% of his pay.
And he had signed up at a second company and did the same thing there.
He was fired, but made a lot of money.4 -
Just signed my work papers, managed to get a front-end developer position after looking for a while! Moved to a much bigger city too6
-
After I graduated, I found a junior job in a company where I already knew the only dev, who has been working there for 6 years. Immediately after I signed the contract, the manager told me that the other guy was leaving the company in one month... Horror!7
-
Just learned my company says it owns everything I think or build, whether I am on the clock or not. It was in the handbook, not the paperwork I signed, but it says I agree to it if I keep working for them. It even says I cannot show interest in something without their approval. FUCK!13
-
I was working as an intern at small company, and after a month we signed contract
But each month they had some excuse for not paying me, or any of the employees
So I quit after 3 months without any payment
But I would not have been where I am, if I was not in that difficult condition, it made me work harder, and thought me to always keep my options open :-) -
Beware of scope creep. If it's a bug, fix it for free. If it's a new feature or changed from the original signed off scope, charge for it.1
-
Me when after a client has signed a spec document and they still try to add more features. Cannot find words to explain how much I hate scope creep.2
-
When I signed up for the technical college and heard that we would have media tech classes, I was expecting frontend stuff like HTML, CSS and JS, not how to make folders and change the font in notepad. Fuck.1

The tons of undefined behaviour in C that ought to have been implementation defined instead, and increasingly sadistic compiler writers on the other side.
Like signed integer overflow that should just do what the underlying machine does, i.e. in practice, wrap around two's complement.
But the wierdest UB is when a C source code line has a non-matching ' or ". WTF, this should have been a compile time error!2 -
the feeling when you have typed up ans signed a resignation letter and still need to turn it in and "the talk" with your boss.
made all the better by the fact that we are opening a new location in the time span of the 2 weeks notice I'm about to give.
oh and the boss will be going on vacation just after that.2 -
Here's a short story about luck:
A few months ago my wife signed a new job contract requiring relocation. However before starting that new job she got another (and much better) offer (also relocating to the same place) which she took on. Recently that first company fired 700+ people, including the unlucky one that filled her position.
If she had not gotten that second offer, she'd be out of a job after just relocating.1 -
I was searching for a good answer about a problem I got. Found an existing thread on stack overflow.
Many answers, all of them upvoted but not working.
One answer being not upvoted was working.
Wanted to upvote it, signed up to stack overflow.

GOD, DAMN IT.2 -
Dear, developers
For any freelance project you want to embrace, you should have a written agreement by both parties signed ( clients and you ).
Some client's forget almost anything ....
I'm talking from experience, please be guided....11 -
Ok so we just signed a new client with some "artificial intelligence" back-end...
To authenticate with their back end, they developed a FU**ING GET REQUEST so the username and password are passed in the URL.
Then we get a token that we pass in FU**ING GET REQUESTS to communicate with their "artificial intelligence enhanced" back end.
I can't even. I just can't.5 -

The most annoying co-worker(*team*) I have worked with just signed off a custom project that uses plain text passwords, hard coded into a file.. PLAIN TEXT!!! NO HASH!!! NOTHING!!! The same team also told me that working in feature branches cuts into their productivity, but they want CI/CD implemented NOW!3

Wow $50 a month for LinkedIn premium.... What a joke?

If I uncheck the "stay signed in" checkbox on login, don't have it checked when I need to sign in again. Especially, don't do that and make me sign in ten times when I'm just navigating your page.

I feel so stressed at work right now.
QA signed off on a fix I made, I signed off on a fix I made, and other people signed off on the fix, but it gets out to production and people find it's broken, I get the finger pointed at me.
It's really stressing me out, especially when our client needs custom logic to make their use cases work, and the BE and FE are scrambling to make it work.
It's really affecting the way I work and I don't know what to do. I talked to my boss and he just tells me to "stay positive". Someone please help me.11 -
What the fuck is up with my luck finding raging peak lunatics, on Twitter for example, I made myself check the person I could be interested in following, by going through 3ish pages of their tweets and retweets, everything safe, then shortly after I open Twitter, I see them fucking retweeting propaganda, sec drama, writing themselves about drama surrounding them, surrounding others, I fucking signed up for tech news, insights and reviews, not your fucking bullshit you twat.12

I've created a code review for merging someone else's code, coz they were signed off sick for the last month.
They're making comments about how it's wrong.
It's code they wrote, but restructured to be more readable.
They wrote incorrect code that was just so illegible they didn't realise.
How do I explain this diplomatically?10 -
I was told life would be easy once you're grown up. I signed up for trial not the whole package, I want to go back!!1

Here’s how my Friday night is going:
def signin
if should_not_sign_user_in?(stuff)
return redirect_to :nope
end
# signin logic
end
The guard says I shouldn’t sign the user in. It logs the details of why. I read the logs; they’re all correct. It logs the return value, which is false, and the user gets signed in anyway.
Wat.
There’s a return and a redirect there!
This is only happening on the QA server, too, so something fishy is going on.5 -
a former client and their client keep contacting me about the project i did for them, we couldn't agree on a new contract but they keep asking me things about the site but, if they had signed would be billable.
Sorry i dont work for free.2 -
It sucks when a better company offers you a better role once you are signed a contract in lower company.10

It is not on production anymore, but it was for long enough. Someone thought it would be a great idea to be able to debug a web app while signed in as a user reporting a problem. How to do it? It's easy. Just check on every request if magic HTTP parameter SIGN_IN_AS=id is present and if it is, sign in as this user. Of course, it worked also with admin account with hard-to-guess id=1.1

Do you guys know any website that challenges you into coding little programs (for me, php) to solve problems ?
I mean, it would be to train my skills with actual kind of real world problems, not just hello worlds or simple "how-to" codes.
I signed up to a contest recently and I felt really dumb not to be able to find solutions faster or with more efficiency (FYI : I was ranked 1049/2300 all languages included :( )11 -
I can't login ffs
I don't care that it shows an impossible number of characters honestly, but I don't get why that should prevent me from logging in to any of these servers

So I landed a senior linux admin job in August, moved to a new city, and signed a 2 year contract for them to pay my moving expenses. I took an employee survey in October, not knowing anything. As a department (all ops and devs), we reviewed the results as a whole with HR.
Now HR is coming to our remote office tomorrow (4 hours away).... to be continued...1 -
I left my previous job without notice period (didnt need to coz i hadnt signed any contracts with them yet and have not been there for more that 3 months) so they got pissed and decided to not pay me my monthly salary.

So a package came at my door today and it looked like it had stickers in it. I thought they were my devRant stickers and became so overjoyed I happily signed the package and quickly went back in without reading the sender's name.
And then I opened it up and it had a phone's battery.
My sis-in-law sent her phone's battery and asked me to buy and send her a replacement.

I just stumbled across this post about signed-only mails: https://k9mail.github.io/2016/11/... (TL;DR: Signed-only mails are not worth it).
So far, I've been signing all my mails (as not that many people I know use OpenPGP, so I'm far from encrypting everything). I've got a few replies like “I can't open that attachment” and “What is that .asc file?” but I have seen it as doing my part in motivating more people to use encrypted mail with little effort.
I DDW for a bit but couldn't find any other comments on the usefulness of signed-only mail per se. Consequently, I'd like to ask you: How do you use OpenPGP?6 -
A friend of mine has been searching for a job for 3 months, he finally got one, signed a contract and started 2 weeks ago. Now he got an offer from a company he applied to, completed an interview and was abandoned and they want to pay 3x more than the present job. This is bad luck. Bad, bad luck3

So I was referred to an ai tech startup that's building a bot that you can talk to about your career n experience and it will suggest and connect you to companies looking to hire. I was really excited when I saw their site and signed up for their beta.

Ranted earlier about how my debugger was fucking up. Jokes on me, it's now the only thing that works well.
The fucking C++ code behaves normally in debug build, but when in release build throws a SEGFAULT out of nowhere. Bet it's tellg() or my unsigned to signed conversion that fuck things up (while they work perfectly in debug, I repeat). But I can't tell, since the only way I have to trace back the issue is the disassembly ¯\_(ツ)_/¯7 -
Anyone else in the habit of having a PuTTy window signed into a personal server, for stuff like IRC, because it looks too much like work for the boss to question it?1

tl;dr: buy signed stuff or get it signed by steve wozniak (link below)
Since people seemed to like that find a lot, thought maybe some other people want to know about it too and maybe won't come across the comment section of the other rant.
So apparently there is http://signedbywoz.com/ which allows you to either buy some already pre-signed things from woz or ask for a price to send in your stuff and get it signed, I think the idea is pretty nice and it is also featured on his official page (http://woz.org/ sidebar), so doesn't seem to be fake either.
I wonder if there is more like that, since I remember asking dfox to sign the stickers and others wanting signed ducks for example.7 -
Fucking fuckwits! I sent a digital contract to sign online via hellobonsai.com. The client said he hadnt recieved it. After resending and pestering him he finally signed it, but not in the way a normal person would. He printed it out, all of it, signed it, scanned it and generated a pdf to which he emailed back to me. It would have taken 3 seconds to digitally sign it. I wondered if his secretary had done all the scanning and shit.

The worst (and only, really): I signed a 5 year contract with this company and now I'm miserable.
But I can't to quit, or else I'll have to pay 16000€ so yeah...
And the worst part: after I signed the contract I realised I don't really want to do this, so now I'm stuck in this company for 5 years (unless they fire me) and can't do what I ACTUALLY want to do.
I had another opportunity at the time, but I didn't go because I would be making a lot less, but at least I could leave when I wanted!
Also, my family said this would be better, and 5 years wasn't a lot of time, so I trusted them... What a bad idea!
I will spend the first half of my 20's doing something I should have kept as a hobbie!
I only make bad decisions, I swear12 -
Signed up for an account on an online store, which then proceeded to send me my full password in plaintext, and in an unencrypted email.

A bit longer rant, somehow triggered by the end of this rant:
https://devrant.com/rants/7145365/...
The discussion revolved around strpos returning false or a positive integer.
Instead of an Option or a Exception.
I said I'm a sucker for exception, but I'm also a sucker for typing.
Which is something most languages lack - except the lower level ones like C / C++.
I always loved languages which have unsigned and signed types.
There, I said it... :) I know that signed / unsigned is controversial, Google immediately leads to blog entries screaming bloody murder because unsigned can overflow – or underflow, if someone tries to use a -1on an unsigned integer.
Note that my love is only meant for numeric types, unsigned / signed char is ... a whole can of insanity on its own.
https://phoronix.com/news/...
If you wanna know more.
Back to the strpos problem, now with my secret love exposed:
strpos works on a single string, where a string is a sequence of chars starting with 0.
0 is a positive integer.
In case the needle (char that should be looked up in the string) cannot be found in the haystack (the string), PHP returns "false".
This leads to the necessity of explicitly checking the type as "0" (beginning of string, a string position)... So strpos !== false.
PHP interprets 0 as false, any other integer value is true.
In the discussion, the suggestion came up to return -1 if a value could not be found – which some languages do, for example Scala.
Now I said I have a love for unsigned & signed integers vs. just signed integers...
Can you guess why the -1 bothers me very much?
Because it's a value that's illogical.
A search in a sequence that is indexed by 0 can only have 0 or more elements, not less than zero elements.
-1 refers to a position in the sequence that *cannot* exist.
Which is - of course - the reason -1 was chosen as a return value for false, but it still annoys me.
An unsigned integer with an exception would be my love as a return value, mostly because an unsigned integer represents the return value *best*. After all, the sequence can only return a value of 0 ... X.
*sigh*
Yes, I know I'm weird.
I'm also missing unsigned in Postgres, which was more or less not implemented because it's not in the SQL standard...
*sob*29 -
Just closed my first job contract today... Haven't signed yet, but feels good! Haven't had to face rejection :) (yet)7

And that, folks, is why you never do a rush job, no matter how urgent, without an RFP and answering estimate followed by a signed statement of work confirming agreement to the estimate. Even with a prearranged, perpetual contracting agreement. And also why you NEVER deliver the end product without payment. No matter how much you trust your client or believe they will do right by you, process still matters.2

I had been building dumb Minecraft mods in Java for under a year, and my parents wanted to know how much I was actually teaching myself. (I was 15 at the time.) They signed me up for a CS introductory class that taught Java at a local college.

When you jokingly suggest overriding MAX_INT32 to be something 10x larger to accommodate larger trades, then come back to numerous messages about how "the number wouldn't fit into a signed int anymore" and "you can't just do that wtf", you really start to question who you're talking to 😂😂

We had almost finished integration of debit card depositing for our application.
Yesterday, the clients told us they signed a contract with a new provider.
This is after telling us they'd signed the contract with the previous provider, but as it turns out, that's a lie.
So we have to scrap the entirety of the last 8 days work because the new provider is a shareholder in the client's company now.
The new provider doesn't have an SDK for our language, and what they do have is XML.
It's time to parse, I guess. -
How to cope with getting cockblocked by coronavirus before job change?
I signed a contract for a job in a foreign country. I was excited for the advantages like better work/life balance, finally getting to linux dev env, friendlier company. But now, I can not even apply for work permit because of restrictions.
Due to already having signed contract already, I completely lost my touch with my current job. I hate it so much that I am having unpaid leaves even though I could do nothing since we are working half team at the same time. Dont tell me to “learn new skills”, I tried, it does not work for me. I am not in the mood for learning.
New company is great that they reassured me I would not lost the opportunity, I would join them whenever I can. So I dont fear losing job but uncertainty kills me. European travel ban was up to 15 May, prolonged to 15 june, which prevents me to apply for work visa. I guess this was the last straw that broke camel’s back.14 -
What a consultant's gotta do for his timesheet when homeworking:
1. Fill in Excel, send to self by mail (corporate bitlocker protected PC on proxy that doesnt allow local printer connections)
2. Go upstairs to secondary Windows PC (no Excel on main Linux laptop) and open mail
3. Send to printer, wait 10 minutes (old printer needs to 'warm up')
4. Sign timesheet and go back upstairs
5. Scan signed version, send mail to self.
6. Open personal mail on corporate laptop, send to manager. (can't send directly from personal mail)
7. Wait to get back signed timesheet from manager
8. Finally, send to own admin dept.
2 story points completed, time for a break.1 -

Was hoping someone with experience can provide insight or advice on this. It's a long one, so thanks in advance to everyone who took time.
Received a great job offer a few weeks ago and was told I'd get a contract in January. They seemed pretty switched on about the kind of problems I might be facing and even raised my asking price, so I'm definitely not interested in looking elsewhere.
However, I started getting interview requests Thursday last week, one of which is for next Thursday.
Received and signed contract on Friday. Haven't received copy with employer's signature yet, but it's still early so np yet. However, I still haven't replied to the interview requests.
Should I turn down the requests or accept them and hope I get the contract back in time to cancel? I mentioned to the recruiter that I was receiving interest from other companies and I wanted to seal the deal with this company, but didn't receive response yet advising me whether it's cool to keep my options open.
I don't wanna look dodgy to the dudes I signed with in the unlikely event they find out I accepted interviews. I also don't wanna come across as combative or a pain to work with by pressuring them to sign soon.
However, I also don't wanna have a panic attack in the middle of revision season if I don't hear from these guys for a week (they get pretty busy at times). I feel like I could be sentencing myself to short-term anxiety (and I'm already anxious af in final year) if I start turning down offers before I have a signed contract.

I'm a student at uni and also one of the two web devs at a website agency.
Today, I got in office and my boss told be, that he just signed off (confirmed) two mobile apps ( we're switching to React Native) and is in the talks with a few other clients, also we're like a week from starting our first big project.
Furthermore, internship deadlines are ending at the start of next month.
Goodbye Life 😂 🔫 💻 -
My dumb effin ass signed a contract as a service provider.
I can't just change jobs now.
In that sense, it's better to be an employee rather than a contractor/freelance.
Should have read it man1 -
That moment when there's a 30 email long chain between 3 members of the board stretching over 7 weeks about design ideas and all before anything has been signed or money has been exchanged.... Oh to be a freelancer...
-
so my suspicions were correct... most projects were fake and i was selected as a finalist for that hacking project!!!
wahoooooooo
also, day 5 of not knowing how to mix ES and commonjs packages in node

Dear MyISAM,
please die a painful and horrible death already, you living corpse of the times long gone. You're taking way too long.
Thank you,
signed, myself.
((Seriously, MyISAM is so bad, yet so many people still use it because they don't know better))2 -
Recently I have started receiving many mails from all different websites I signed up .
1 What is the reason for the update ?
2 What is the update (still not going to read it :p)? -
I'm not saying our office coffee machine is slow, but I am saying that I just signed a farewell card for a retiring colleague who started pulling his coffee as an intern after graduation...

And so behind the great purge...
If all the accounts I have signed into with my Yahoo email address...3 -
My badass dev moment was when I read a valve white paper on text rendering and implemented a dynamic text version of it in webgl. That white paper was about signed distance fields and how to hack the alpha channel of an image to bake in some font smoothing data.... Holy fuck that felt good. Oh and it looked good too!1

Why do I keep opening all this shit that has been signed off by an expert yet is completely wrong everytime?!
-
TF, for me it's impossible to logout one google account in the browser if I signed in with multiple google accounts.
I'm too dumb I guess!2 -
How is the quality of life for the average web developer?
I've been doing a bit of research and it seems quite common for people in the field to have no life outside of work. This is not what I want. I work/study 7 days a week and I would ideally like to work for a web dev company, not freelance.
Is it naive to think that a standard 9-5 is realistic for me when I graduate?8 -
You can now download arbitrary shit using WinDefend on Win10.
That's a good fucking idea that will never backfire ever in any way. It's not like it's a Microsoft-signed proxy or anything.

I am going to have a goddamn stroke.5 -
so, about a month ago I signed a contract with a company for three months of work. they've asked for 40 man hours a week, and required that I be in the office. today, they let me go because my "skills were not up to their expectations" and, "there wasn't enough work,".6

Some stats on what I've been doing all 2020:
222 working days.
60% of the days, working on dev stuff.
80% of the days, working on 2nd responsibility (legal documentation for clients).
From April, 60% of the 222 days working on the 3rd responsibility I got assigned in, you guessed it, April (KPI making).
So basically 70% of my job is no longer what I signed up for.
That's what I want to change this year. -
My parents signed me up for a robotics class in 5th grade. I learned TC Logo for the first time and made my Lego creations move with code. It was mind blowing, so much so that I dove face first into anything I could do with PCs. That same summer, I learned how computers worked and took them apart for fun.

I just signed up for the preparation course for the Offensive Security Certified Professional (OSCP) certificate. Does anybody have experience doing this course? or has maybe some tips for the exam? or any learning suggestions?
I‘ve decided not to get a CEH certificate because its just too theoretical, the OSCP is way more practical and i think there is way more to learn from this course/exam1 -
One of my teammates signed up for a day-long session on Angular 2, since he's been doing a lot with Angular 1 and wants to transition to the new version.
The instructor spent the first half of the day going through the w3schools tutorial on Angular 1, because "understanding the basics of Angular 1 will help understand Angular 2".
Btw, this was a paid workshop session. -
Alright, Kotlin, I really like you but...
WHY TF IS 0xFFFFFFFF A LONG. WHY DO YOU TAKE THIS PERFECTLY FINE, BUT SIGNED, 32BIT AND USE IT AS A FUCKING LONG. NOW I'M SUPPOSED TO APPEND .toInt() AT EVERY TIME I WANT SOME HEX EVALUATED AS A COLOR.
THIS IS NOT OK, I NEED ANSWERS. HOW SHIT INTO YOUR BRAIN AND THOUGHT THIS WAS FINE!!!1 -
Since Electron is getting some well deserved flak, I think I'll add my two cents.
Why in the actual fuck can it not proceed any way to allow us to USE OUR SELF FUCKING SIGNED CERTIFICATES.
Yes, security hole, but for messing about with new software, I'm not going to pay a CA for a certificate so I can put it on a server that only I and a few select individuals use!
At least give us a usable frontend for allowing our self-signed certificates so I can use my fucking server!1 -
Our marketing director on conversion rates:
30% of the people that signed on were marketing leads.
Actual conversion rate:
6%1 -
So...I think I have a job now sort of...just signed my first big long-term gig as a consultant/dev for an US based startup, pay promises to be solid, the CEO seems to be shill and they'll pay me for hours worked with a relatively low minimum which is great because that freedom will allow me to continue my projects and dumb college assignments.
Let's hope neither of the two parties fuck it up. -
It has been sometime since my last rant, but a Tester return a work item saying it did not work. I called him shared my screen went through the item he sent back multiple times without issue and followed what he said he could not do!! Within debug and a test release. I said "I'll send it back to be signed off" He said "Well it did not work for me so I'll be sending it back tomorrow!"1
-
I did not...
My year of just working was up, and I had to choose my education.
I heard about the IT degree and went to a “meet and greet” with the current students.
I signed up and the rest is history. -
My friends were talking about modding their brawl to give them weird powers, so I signed up to take a programming class in high school. After that, I was hooked.

I signed up to a website, and my password contained & symbol, got an error that password cannot contain that symbol, I thought we are way beyond vulnerability of SQL injection?
Or that symbol can be used for some other attacks?5 -

As a Netflix subscriber, don't you feel inundated by new content and the need to binge "since paid for it"? How much time do you spend watching?
Just signed up for 30-day trial and and there are like so many original shows and movies and well in multiple languages. And a separate section for Coming Soon which contained like an unending list of movies and tv series.5 -
Why the fuck doesn't anything work anymore? I signed up for a service the other day and paid for it, and now I can't even log in. And the support is fucking useless. And now I have a cold. Fucking great.

Got an email “Welcome to Amazon Web Services” to an old GMail account I no longer use. Seems genuine with no links to shady websites or anything. Does Amazon not verify email addresses or how does that happen?
Also, the mail says I have now 12 months of free tier access, so will they start billing me instead of the random fuck who signed up with my email address?3 -
I have a customer who forget to renew his internal SSL certificate. It expires on a Sunday. I have to generate the new CSR and call the relevant people to approve the signed certificate before I can use it2

Does nordvpn work in China? I just signed up because it said its speeds are fast and my Windscribe VPN has been show and unstable for the last few days... But works
Afterwards I couldn't connect to any of the servers in Android though...11 -
so the deployment from my side went through ok... but a "SYSTEM" defect almost prohibited my changes from being signed off... explained it to the person responsible... and then they sign it off knowing well that it was a "SYSTEM" defect that was outside of scope...

Omg click once applications are such a royal fucking pain in my ass.
Everything has to be code signed and every manifest much match and if you change anything you better hope to the gods you can use mage and resign that shit and that it will work
Can we just like, stop using it thank you god I hate it2 -
I need a really good excuse to tell a company (which I already signed a contract with) that I'm not going to start working with them7
-
So for the current project, they want to start testing the application from Monday next week and the development part section still has a few bugs that need to be handled. But that isn't the worst part. The worst part I just heard is that the designs themselves haven't even been signed off. How the fuck did we get to the point where the designs haven't been signed off where the development has been going underway for the past 2.5 months? I swear I'm working with the fucking worst project manager!

For a few days I failed to see that I need to add one string escape instead of re-writing the whole S3 file upload logic to hash file names using md5. :( Context: We were not able to retrieve some files with international letters (like German, Chinese, etc) in their names because of weirdly escaped signed URL to S3.
-
Have you ever declined an already signed offer to take another one? If so, what's the way that you've handled it?
I just don't want to say to them that is for personal reasons because I'm pretty sure they would know it's about money .
(Signed offer but won't start in the position until June 1st.)2 -
I know i signed a contract that prevents me from doing anything bad to the company I’m currently working at but… Hypothetically, in how much trouble would i be if i, let’s say, leak a bunch of passwords or credentials to some websites or servers?
Like would i be arrested? Would i have to pay a fine? Anyone who ever did such a thing?5 -
seriously why the hell is Slack so fucking stupid! When I click to sign in to the desktop client it opens up a signup page in my browser, but I was just signed in a minuted ago in the fucking workspace!!7

Me just now:
> finishes adapting an app for my purposes in android studio
Time to export a signed apk!
> successfully locates the keystore I generated a year ago
> even remembers the passwords
Nice! Now I can finally close Android Studio!
One second after I close it:
Shit, I forgot to enable dark mode
> reopens android studio
(The dark mode normally becomes accessible through in-app purchases, but since I built the app from source those don't work)3 -
Was told to "not reinvent the wheel" by the same senior who seems to think that:
1. Fetching a self signed certificate
2. Adding a new entry to my `etc/hosts`
3. Manually importing the certificate to hijack Firefox's security
..in order to access the app at "something.loc" instead of "localhost" is perfectly fine.3 -
I am sorry, I am still confuse how to use this website !? Let me verify the email that i used to signed up and then browse this entire web first.2
-
>Be me
>Have the COMPAL modem with the DOCSIS OS
>Change my bedroom router's IP to static after doing factory reset on the modem
>As expected, I get booted from the modem settings page
>Cannot log in now, because "another user is already signed into the modem settings page"
Stupid piece of silicon waste, whyyyy. I hate that thing, ugh! -
Been studying for the last 4 months, and was hoping to hold onto my job until I signed on the dotted line for a new job, but I just can't take this job anymore.
Does anyone have experience quitting their job to interview/find a new job? My only concern is that I have rent to pay, but I have some reserved funds to get through this time I believe.1
