A client asked if we could change their nameservers to wix's ones.
"we want to move to wix because one of my best friends can create a professional site there"
My eyes are bleeding and I think I just spontaneously got aids AND cancer at the same time.
Send help. Please.30 -
The best prank played in our office was an AutoHotkey script that changed the space character to actually print the word 'space' in all caps.
The next message in Hipchat from the victim was: "WhatSPACEtheSPACEfuck!SPACEMySPACEkeyboardSPACEisntSPACEworking!"
The next time this prank was pulled, ALL symbols were typed out in all caps.1 -
Best: "If an AI could replace your job at this company but we would keep you on the payroll, what would you do with your time?"
Worst: "So, you are here for the position of front-end SQL developer?"6 -
The best time to buy bitcoin was when it was released
The second best time was a few years ago when it was only like $200/btc
The third best time was probably last year before they went up 650% in value
The worst time is apparently whenever I buy in14 -
I'm logging my DevRant time as training ... I read all these dumb things that people do, and make mental notes so that I don't do the same thing. Best. Training. Ever.6

Scrum Meeting
PM: What did you do yesterday?
Me: Tried to come up with a funny post on DevRant.
PM: Wait... So you didn't write any code?
Me: Oh yeah of course I did! I came up with algorithm that grabs the highest rated rants and compares them to determine the best time of day I should post said rant, to get the best possible amount of up votes.8 -
I think the best I saw was a co-worker scripted a file so that every time the manager typed the computer would play painful screaming sounds and then thank her when she stopped typing.3

Response time of different people on Whatsapp:
Best Friend: 5-10 sec
Friend: 1-2 min
Best Friend(Girl): 3-5 min
Girl Friend: 1-2 day 😢
Client(when me solving bug): 0.00005 sec
Client(when me asking payment): *Blocked*

"Only stay late at work when it makes sense to, otherwise always leave on time. There's always going to be work left, no matter how much you get done in one day."
Best advice ever.
Edit: I have to say it was during my first week in my first recent grad job.2 -
At last, my vue module for attacking the user with a swarm of animated bees when they put in the wrong password is almost complete.
Best use of my time yet.15 -
Being told I’m not experienced enough to get a senior dev job I interviewed for.
Even though I aced the first 4 interview rounds, the tech test feedback was “the best solution they had ever seen”, and I’ve been a senior dev for 25 years.
Time wasting assholes.3 -
My best friend and long time crush just told me she got into a new relationship 😑
I'm here, reading rants to take my mind off sadness 😑24 -
I currently have the best problem ever:
Our client applications and APIs are so fast, users are complaining they don't notice that the UI changed in between the time they clicked a button and their eye drifts to the adjacent component. So now we're having to build visual cues to account for that.
#KillingIt9 -
I quit my job today, after 2 years as a developer. I can't remember the last time I felt so peaceful. I've yet to decide what I'll do instead. Wish you all the best, adios!5
-
Everyone's asleep.
I'm not tired, and coding sounds like the best thing ever right now. Figured out a solution to that blocking architecture issue, too. So: headphones on, blare Amon Amarth and Disturbed, bring up editor. It's time to work on that side project!
Best night in months.7 -
Starting a new project
Me: This time we'll follow all the best practices, do atomic commits and write meaningful commit messages.
Coworker: Yeah! Let's start.
40 commits later.
Me: Why is .idea folder in the repository?
Coworker: Sorry My Bad.
Me: 👿👿👿👿6 -
My favorite IT story (not mine) is that the server needed to be rebooted whenever it froze completely. The best solution? Get an old PC that had a CD drive, and every time it loses connection to the server, eject the CD tray which had a poking stick attached that hits the reset button.3

With all the people showing off their setup and input devices i thought it's time to show you my keyboard...
Key features:
- mechanical keys
- sturdy af; best for ranting (survived more angry fist strokes than any device should ever receive)
- older than me and outlived 5 (!) mice
- awesome retro look
- would beat a nokia in hunger games
- best code buddy ever (and propably oldest, too)
Hope i'll be able to continue coding on it another 20 years... Someday i may gift it to my grandchildren.18 -
Winner EVERY time?! This could be the best arcade machine for devs!
Found this at my local movie theater.11 -
Hi everyone. I'm new to this. Been lurking for a quiet some time. Best community ever IMHO ☺ Started my first programming language as c++ now somehow ended as web developer as hobby. Big shout out for you guys love your all stories ♥6
-
I can't name one specific time that was the best memory per say. My team is super close - we get lunch almost every day, have (inappropriate) inside jokes and just act dumb together. Not one person on my team who doesn't fit in. Even our boss is cool. :) #LoveMyTeam4

Me:(kills the CTRL +S buttons saving something)
Boss: what are you doing ?
Me: nothing much, saving a document.
Boss: is that the best way to save it?
Me: no, it got saved the very first time, the rest is to convince my heart I saved it.
Boss: ... ... ... fair enough.5 -
Worst client request.
Craziest client.
Worst accident.
Accident you thought were impossible in the dev world.
Story time, that one time where you f*cked up really bad.
Best boss.
Nicest client.
Most satisfying hobby project.
Best dev food.
Most helpful accident.
Your favorite project you had to trash, explain why.
Weirdest thing someone asked you to fix because you worked with computers.
Most memorable thing from devRant.
Best thing to happen to you because of devRant.
Its 6am and i feel productive, its not even my app got dammit.
Project you took too far.
Best/worst drunk coding experience.
Weirdest thing you ever ended up fixing because you know stuff about computers.
Worst setup you have seen someone have.
Worst treated hardware you have ever seen.
Best skill to have picked up because of your interest for development, but isnt completely dev related.
Best/worst choice in your carreer, what happened.
Sketchiest email a coworker, friend, boss or client sent.
That one accident that prevented you from using your computer or the internet.
Moment when you thought your dev environment would get a huge boost, but ended with a plot twist.
Worst disturbance while working.
If i come up with more ill either post again, or comment here. This was all i could get off the top of my head, believe it or not.
Edit, gotta add this one: Cable porn3 -
This community is by far the best thing I've discovered in 2016. Been lurking for a while, thought it was time to post this.
System.out.println("HAPPY NEW YEAR!");3 -

best friend works at a gym, and he always remind me to exercise.
him: bro when was the last time you workout?
me: every fucking day.
him: what?
me: I am a programmer bro, everyday is brain day.2 -
Interviewer: Time limit for this exercise was an hour and you took 2 hours so you fail. Best of luck next time
Dev: Look I really don’t think your assessment has a very fair time limit. The only way you could do this in an hour is by knowing what the problem was beforehand and having all these niche utilities written ahead of time.
Interview: Oh yeah we had one guy that did that, he did the entire thing in only 45 minutes! We hired him immediately!
Dev: …5 -

I just asked for a 42% raise having an already good salary and got it easily.
The best thing? I helped this company grow so much I barely work half the time I used to due to the newly hired workforce. I can work on my own projects so much.9 -
I live 5 minutes from work. Not in and of itself a way to improve but it means I have an extra hour and a half each day when compared to my colleagues in which to do work, spend time reading etc.
Also get rid of Facebook.
Best life advice I can give.7 -
Best decision ever was to have my phone muted all the time. My overall stress levels went down significantly. I encourage you to try the same. At first is kinda weird as you actually miss the fuss o having your phone vibrating or ringing all the time, but then all you have is peace.10
-
For those who have seen "Mr Robot" (if not just GO), we agree, terminals contents are just amazing 😮
Best TV show of all time ♥️13 -
As a developer, you are working with colourful text, strange syntax, alot of math, and all the time you know that you are not the best yet!
-
Fucking finally. I got a job... No one is probably gonna give a shit because it's your average governmental drone position but I wanted this for a very long time...
** drum roll **
Customs and immigration officer!!!
Thats right! Deported! Deported! Deported! *hot chick* welcome to our country!
Best thing is... Now every project can be a side project... I can chillax and build software in my spare time... I love it.9 -
The best feeling in the world is when your code works the first time or when you close 100 tabs when you finish work7
-
Best co-worker? One of my team who was cut from the same cloth. I could ask him to do anything without giving a how-to. I could then carry on with my work knowing he would deliver on time and at least as good as I would have done. We've been mates ever since.1
-
Sometimes dirty code is more efficient than clean code.
If features get dropped frequently and requirements change every few days, writing best-practices, tested code is wasted time. Learned that in my first job where I thought the other devs were all bad. Until I realized their bad code pays my salary, and my clean code takes more time to develop.6 -
Best coworker I've had and still have is a girl I've met in training. Whenever our shifts overlap I work best. Last time this happened we watched Pink Floyd's The Wall while solving tickets and taking chats. Other times we rock out to music and every time we laugh at some customer's way of describing their issue. She also has a great lifestyle, she's an actress and she's got loads of fun stories to tell.
P.S. Hello, world!8 -
Missing the first entry date for university was probably the best thing that happened to me.
Got to work full time and show off my expertise in "reallife scenarios" for nearly a year.
Best experience i could've made until now. -
Best time to learn something new?
-Now
Best way to learn something new?
-By doing it. Practice makes perfect.
I wasted so much time and never got anywhere because I wanted to get it right. Fucking up is part of the learning process.2 -
Dev slang
Me: Hey “Schatz” (german equivalent to “treasure”, “sweety”)
Schatz: Yes?
M: What R U doing?
S: Working on my page
M: Oh C (C for “Sí”, what is “Yes” in spanish)
S: && U?
M: null (nothing)
* several Simpsons memes later *
S: Schatzy (female schatz, me), (Want to go to Amy Winehouse tributte) == true
M: !C
S: Why?
M: Cuz I !like it
S: oh, && you.want2Go2TheCinema == true
M: !false
S: True ^_^
M: When?
S: I !know, Tomorrow at !morning?
M: !not cool
S: !hate you
M: Me !neither
Note: Schatz it’s also a dev (Php dev)
What do you think? Should we all promote a “developer slang”? Which phrases would you like to add?5 -
I'm here to tell you the best way to learn anything about programming:
- Be 17
- Have a lot of projects to do (if it needs to use frameworks, better)
- Have the worse team
- Internet and a lot of free time to check documentation
PD: I hate teams7 -
Every time..
Every single time!
All day long the hairy one is nowhere to be found. But as soon as you put some tech and/or wires on the bed - be sure she'll find it to be the best sleeping spot in less than a minute.
Literally a techno-cat.8 -
Dev: Hey I need something from Team B
Manager: Ok I’ll get it from them now
Dev: Unfortunately they have the current time blocked off as uninterrupted coding time for the next two hours.
Manager: Yeah that means they’re not occupied by anybody else. It’s the best time to get a hold of them!
Dev: …4 -
Me: Asking a lot of junior questions
Dev: Stop! Before you ask another question - think for 10 minutes, google another 15 minutes and if you don't find anything - ask me.
^ This was the best thing he said, after that I can google pretty much anything, and hell, I even go to 5-th page of the google from time to time!5 -
Started using windows mixed reality for part of my work day, best part, using Cortana voice activation to do things in my virtual space, worst part, every time i say 'hey Cortana,' my google home makes a snide remark.
Fucking google3 -
The great thing about coding is, every problem can be solved with logic. And the simplest solution is often the best one.
Often when I don't know what to do, I just keep thinking about what I want to have and break down what I need for that and in the end I always come to a good solution. And it gets easier from time to time. -
Programming with a best friend. Knocked out a project in no time. Just a friendly race between friends.
-
I have been learning how to dockerize entire projects this week, and I have to say, Docker is the best thing I've come across in a long time.
That is all5 -
Soft rant...
So I'm working at the company for 8 months now. Best 8 months in my career, great team mates, great work, the best - a team leader who is one of the best developers I've ever worked with, but more importantly he is a good friend, brother like. We had great time, from the interview we understood there is a bro-mance there.
So why am I ranting? He got promoted and became a group leader, not even of my group. Now we don't have a TL and we're afraid they won't be able to get a swell guy like our exTL2 -
"Don't try to memorize everything, after you've coded for a while you'll start remembering it, even the best devs Google shit ALL THE TIME."3

Best linux desktop environment?

I am going to reinstall my Arch Linux. It's time to try anything else than gnome.24 -
Overworked team spends 2 months hacking together a Codecademy clone in record time: avoiding best practices, conflating paradigms, throwing shit at the wall until it stuck.
But today I submit a small UI fix that used a table instead of `display: table`...1 -
WOW!! What a fucking cop out. After what happened yesterday about branching. my senior and our boss had a meeting and I wasn’t included. My senior then message me to next time dont create another branch just use the existing branch even if it was merged. I said “ok but i thought thats the best practice, we we’re doing that since the beginning”. Senior then responded “Whats best practice for our boss, that will be our best practice” what a fucking cop out!!! Bitch!!23

O'joy has come, it is time to make the best if/switch statement...
Worst part I can't see a pattern in this, so I have to hardcode all this shit.
Even worser part, it has to be updated yearly... woop w00p9 -
Some of the best mentoring has actually been from the devRant community on how not to get burned out as a developer.
Take it section by section. Don’t spend a lot of time on one part. Work on it for a bit then move on to a new part and so on.
Thanks devRant Community -
And the best question that a person asked me today is - Why my Windows PC have a Mac address? -... Ok now is really time to go home.1

Saturday mornings are the best. I've got my coffee. I've got my music. And I've got hours of free time to work on my own projects.1

I fucking hate estimating time.
I appreciate that agile is better than any planning type before it, but HOLY SHIT is estimating time a fool's game.
I've been at this over a decade now and I'm still like.. 50% accurate at best. The complicated shit is seldom obvious, and usually if I think something will be complicated it ends up being very simple once I dig in.7 -
Stackoverflow is the worst and best at the same time. So many pricks on that website yet it comes handy almost always3
-
Speaking of work stations - once upon a time there were not many screens on my desk.. and it was the best ;)2
-
Worst issue you got blamed for, but wasn't your fault.
Best story about a dev you know who's angrier than you.
Best time backups saved your ass.
Story about a traumatic dev experience.1 -
I love good advertisement but I hate bad products with "good" ads!
It's so difficult to find a reliable and up-to-date source for what's a good and bad game engine at the time. Every engine says it's the best. Every browser says it's the fastest. Every anti-virus app says it's the safest. God damn, come of with creative way and don't say your product is the best! *tilted*4 -
My best dev-memories of 2016??
First in february I won a competition (Jugend - Forscht) in which i had programmed an interpreter. And then, the first time my selfmade compiler actually printed hello world... -
Worst: Installing Linux first time on machine which has windows already installed.
Best: Installing and using Linux on whatever machine after getting used to it.2 -
Happy 'Nowrooz' everyone. It's persian new year.
2 weeks holiday. The best time for personal projects. yooohooo -
First real break since I started programming in 2011. Best time ever.
Programming is awesome, but doing other things too, sometimes even more.5 -
I wanna have 8 arms.
Two to rip heads off.
Two to tear people apart.
Two to wank.
Two to code.
All at the same time, best.14 -
My man said "What should I return if the True/False field is left blank?"
WHY WOULD A BOOLEAN BE ANYTHING OTHER THAN TRUE OR FALSE???!!!
I'm gonna have an aneurysm. I shouldn't be educating people on best practices for something that's already been written about time and time again. RESTful philosophy has been documented so much, and all it takes is a quick google search, but noooo! I have to take time out of my day as if I'm a regular old stakeholder to explain that I want the exact thing that I sent in an email two weeks ago. Amazing.20 -
Why thank you! 😁
Much appreciated! And let me just say while I'm thinking about it, devRant is hands down the best community I've been apart of in a very long time. Keep up the rants!4 -
Last day of internship:
"You will not become a developer, at best you will be a code writter".
That struck hard at the time.5 -
Dude this ous the English I'm taught in my last year of school. I spend my time on the phone and I'm still the best in class xD5

End of Hackathon. Students and faculty voted on applications. My group got student voted best overall. Now to sleep for the first time since before Hackathon. So tired, my brain’s literally got “background Zoom meeting sounds” - typing, soft cursing under breath, etc) on loop. I haven’t been in a Zoom in hours.2

Oh yea. Got an interview on the first try to the best devshop in town. Exited! Let's hope our interests meet. Applying for the first time in 10 years. Feels like going on a first date. =D5 -
In case you need to kill some time and would like to see some funny stuff, here you go: https://stackoverflow.com/questions...
thank me later4 -
And the award for the best ticket if all time goes to:
"Create script"
No open questions. Of you don't understand, are you really a dev?
In all seriousness, this thing was in the board for like 3 days and nobody raised any questions...9 -
Ok, I normally just play an FPS just to get it out of my system.
Just played titanfall 2 multiplayer for the first time, getting matched (And winning against) level; 40's is the best feeling you can imagine!
PS. Ive never sweat this much in my life!2 -
Just want to give a kudos to the dev’s who built this app - devRant. This app never fails to lighten me up after a stressful day at work. The best thing about this app which I like the most is the load time for the app. It has an amazing load time when you start the app. Period. Will soon become a supporter. Good job guys! P.S. check the tags on this post :)

I envision a website where you can review individual HR personel on the basis of;
1. Knows technical aspects enough for hiring
2. Respects the candidate
3. Respecting the messaging time limits, ghosting vs
4. Skill to bring best verdion of the candidate etc
What else would be the criteria?7 -
Best way to learn dev tech is to choose the thickest book on the field and start reading it. Don't lose your time on blogs comparing what is the best framework If you do not know any of them... Select one and full blast!!!
-
I have found the best game for learning ever XD
I have recently heared about io.netgarage.org and tried to solve several it's levels, and I find this game awsome
It is the best to learn reverse engineering)) it is just like an Impossible quiz, where you have to smash the stack to get to the next level))
I have wasted much time for that, but it is worth it))
((Not an advertisment))7 -
Don't you just hate it when you have some of the best programmers in the office with you, but none of them can fucking spell! Imagine having to spend more time decoding comments than actual code8
-
Let's call this a !rant haha
Yesterday and today are my last days at this company, and for some unexplainable reason, every bug that I've been assigned is been easy to fix, every junit that I've written has passed at the first time!
Damn, best last days ever XD -
Best: My projects are working, I could get a great salary
Worst: I'm working for a school project and I have no time.2 -
when u are new to devrant and want to change ur avatar, they say ,u need 10++, so mi do it.. as said..and best ranters like your post.. Happy time, thanks all..1

I work for a quite small company (4 people) and about 3 years ago, there was this guy from Bolivia who was an intern for graphics and similar stuff, nothing related to programming.
Turns out we got to be quite friends and still hang out from time to time now.
Best thing was when boss wasn't at the office for like a week and we hadn't much to work on, so we spent time smoking, eating, chatting and watching movies... very great time! -
Oh.. Fuck.. I started loosing my motivation to work for my current employer.
Unfortunately it is one of the best option available at my location. But nevertheless I think it is time to find greener pastures. -
1st week of doing proj: "hello there sexy, u are gonna one beautiful project. ill be doing all my best to finish you and you may actually one of my best projects."
after a month: "aaaaa ERRORS EVerywhere, tf is wrong with u. imma start another project if u dont start running properly like i planned"
after another month: *procrastinates while debugging* "yaass it works now, lets finish u baby"
takes some time to finish projects but if theyre really good, i usually finish them, especially when i am motivated and full of determination.2 -
Best comment of the day! Found on one of our clients code. (eCommerce)
// If you are full time then please don't refactor this code.
// if you are consultant then charge triple! -
Excel is the best worsy fucking software. It has every feature you can think of except the one you actually need. Every time I use I end up yelling at my poor laptop. Even things that should be simple are made impossibly hard and unmanageable.6
-
Best advice so far: "KISS: Keep It Simple and Stupid"
That works every time because your design of the code will be understandable. Your code must seldom to be refactored. You aren't that asshole who never comment and document anything. And the most important part: The code works as designed without flaws!4 -
At the core, alongside repositories and IDEs, the trusty pen + paper is best for seeing bigger picture and fast note taking.
Although my chicken scratch handwriting isn't one to rave about.
It's changed from cursive to curseive over time...3 -
Best moment when u receive payment for the work and the amount is more than expected..
U start wondering:
1. Is it bymistake
2. Is he appreciating ur efforts
3. Is it because the payment was delayed last time..
Or maybe because he wants to give u much more work which is very urgent!! -
So for a while I have wanted to build a raspberry pi cluster. In the spirit of shia labeouf I got started last saturday.
I had two pies lying around so I figured I'd run some experiments before I invested in a lot of hardware. After about a day I had turned the two pies into a shared cluster when disaster struck....
I had completely ignored the fact that you cannot run 32 or 64bit software on an arm processor (I know... I'm a java developer). So when I booted my service and the load balancer, I found that nothing worked. So pretty bumbed out, I quit the project.
Later that day I found a crazy guy who had bought a batch of 400 small form factor PSUs (300W) and internally I laughed at him a little. I mean, who's gonna sell 300W irregular power supplies. Then, just as I was about to go to bed I found this guy, he was selling from a batch of CPU-onboard motherboard for 10 bucks each and everything clicked!
I did some quick calculations and decided I could probably gather enough cash to get: 10 motherboards, 10 2GB ram dimms, 10 Sata disks and 14 PSU (in case some fail) and some misc hardware for networking and such.
So... Long story short, I am going to build a cluster computer, the first version is going to have 10 nodes and I am waiting for delivery right now!12 -
My senior colleague recently said "Don't go around asking for best practices, it's a waste of time! Just try stuff until it works and commit it".
We were talking about writing code in a new language.1 -
Anyone ever wondered how hard it is to fill feedbacks and performance growth of your own, which the manager will be evaluating..
The situation is so ironic.. u want to write the best about you, but don't want to look like bragging abt yourself in the same time..4 -
Finally invested the money in a proper and ergonomic office chair, and it is the best money I've spent in a long time. The difference is really night and day!2
-
studied node.js (express) and socket.io today, then implemented a real time chat service in our site. I can say that this is the best and at the same time worst day of my life. I started 1:00 pm and ended 4:30 am.3
-
Worst: Uni called us back for offline exams in the middle of pandemic despite our attempts of thwarting it.
Best: Thankfully none of the people I know got infected and we got some time together before we graduate.3 -
Constraint Layout is the best thing Google has ever made for responsive Android design, when it works.
Half the time it suddenly stops finding any elements I want to attach my selected one to, so it can't constrain what I want it to constrain.
A restart fixes it though...1 -
The best surprise is when I restart using one of my scraper apps which I haven't used in a long time ... And it still works.
My Dilbert one I haven't updated in years which implies they have not made any changes to the site or added anymore protection for at least 5yrs1 -
The first time i've scripted something and found a vulnerability on a production web application was one of the best moment i've ever had, never been so excited!
(mmh, maybe i need to switch to security :D) -
In order for you to become well-versed at something you cannot study it at a distance.
In addition, most of the time the best way to learn something is to start trying to do stuff. If you wanna learn a language, start trying to program in it. Just go for it.4 -
The best way to debug a program is to boast about it to your family and friends...
It would throw an error in your face almost all the time...
*Feels like a slap on the face*2 -
So, you have to build an app for your company. Once it is done you submit it for the test team who ignores it completely. Then they assume that the best time to test it is after the production deployment and then everything becomes a urgency.
The best part is the PM trying to make you feel guilty about leaving after 12+ hours of work because you didn't finish everything.1 -
I got the requirements specifications today.... for something I've worked on for a year and is 9 months delayed due to design constantly changing and management always lagging behind.
Best part is specifications have requirements we have no chance of meeting in time.
Yet another failed deadline. Yafd2 -
By trying to do my best. Doing a good job makes me feel good and gives me even more motivation.
Also by trying something new every time. Either by using new library, new approach do to things or whatever. Just to keep stuff exciting. -
When my boss thinks doing anything is better then doing nothing...
I have to explain to my boss for the Nth time already that doing random tests and things will not replicate a PRODUCTION network issue that seem caused by particular factors at a particular time and location.
And that the best way to trace is for whatever is raising the issue to log the exact time and error so the problem can be traced through all the steps...
FML.....1 -
so i decided to do some benchmarks for chrome and firefox hypetum ...
TLDR : chromes kicks ass sometimes half the time it takes ff to run some benchmarks.
HTML5/CSS3 support is also better in chrome. overall chrome looks to be the best.
if you're a privacy nut i suppose you won't give a shit but yeah overhyped.8 -
Best: Spending the summer contributing to one of the widely used tools by pentesters and developers (9k stars on Github)
Worst: Not being able to give enough time to programming because of other stuff -
Best smartwatch ever, Pebble Time. I'm sad, that they went bankrupt and were bought by FitBit, epecially because they have the best battery life 😭1

To instantly know *exactly* what caused a compiler or runtime error and *exactly* how to fix it in the best possible way, every single time.2

Just wanted to start a personal project and guess who think it's the best time to update right now?
THANK YOU WINDOWS 😥
Maybe tomorrow7 -
Best: I started a little game project with a coworker for our "8 hours a month" research/fun time.
Worst: I can't get used to be "just a soldier" on my actual team.3 -
I'm not exactly a programmer right now but I'm trying my best to become one ASAP. Hats off to you guys. The toughest part is finding motivation and time.5

The best parts of day are meetings with my boss. Meetings where said boss is always late, and inevitably asks "is it time"!
-
My best code review was when my merge request was accepted in less than a minute after creation. It was simple but I expected more time on review and accept action.
-
By always striving to do better each time. Making code less sloppy every time I write GL code. Better performance everytime I write an algorithm. Lower memory usage every time I write application state. Learning a new trick for an old problem, one at a time.
Learning best practice in one go is impossible, but taking it a bit at a time makes things more reasonable.3 -
im about to fail and repeat the whole year of college and if that happens i am no longer going to try. i gave my best and sacrificed my time every day for 2 years to the cumsuckers who don't appreciate someone elses effort. goodbye.8

So they're kinda the same
Worst
Took a support job because it paid double a dev job
Best
Got a job after having a really tough time this year2 -
The best invention of all time is copy and paste. Can you imagine without copy and paste in your machine/devices? I don't think so...
-
I was away for a long time. Now I got a new job which means it's time to start ranting. Fuck this legacy code is worse. I mean, a fucking cat running after a mouse could write a better source code if he had somehow pushed buttons while doing its job. Every fucking best practice I know is crushed to bits. And the funny part is, this company/startup recently got $300.000 funding.2

best place to ask stupid developing questions is?
For example: I've been developing in html, css, jquery, PHP for the longest time and I think it's time to learn node.js and / or react. Where should I start?3 -
Deadass, best quote said by my PM in our sprint planning meeting:
"I'm just going to name this sprint 'sprint arlene1' because she's the loser who didn't make it onto AOL on-time".4 -
The best part is the satisfaction you get when you see the thing you've worked on for a long time being used and making people happy.

Time for relaxed bed time after fixing that m'fucking bug i've been looking for the ladt 3 hours. Best feeling.1

Hire the best talent you could find. Then give them little to no time to actually implement the extra layer of their expertise. Profit! Wait a minute....1
-
Low code platforms (e.g. OutSystems) will gradually win over developers who will look back at all the time they've wasted and think "why the fuck didn't tell me about this sooner!!!"
Disclaimer: I work for OutSystems and can honestly say that I can create a production-ready app while you're still picking the best JS framework to get started with. Been there...
Actual rant: Time to move up the abstraction layer, get stuff done on time and on budget and go home (also on time) to enjoy life!12 -
We were in math class at computers because we should test our math skills. Had some HTML skills at that point So on the score page changed my score to the best score. The first time I experienced the chrome developer tools.

Note to devs here. Please don't choose a framework for the hype at your work. Use it on your own time or company hackaton/learning time.
I'm looking at you angular.
Production ready doesn't mean sanity ready.
Now because some dev choose such technology for arbitrary reasons. (hype, latest acronym on CV). I spend more time debugging and understanding than I would if some simpler technology was chosen. Look at all the options then choose the simplest one that has and seems to have active maintenance. Zen of python is the best thing to happen in programming and I think everyone, even if you don't like Python should follow it. Save you and your colleagues brain time and ask for advice.
Also IMO react is probably third or second best option, higher if one requirement is to be react native. Angular is even lower because it's complexity is unforgivable when a dev has not enough front-end experience.8 -
My Cat-magnets make me smile every time I look at them!
OfferZen gives the best swag for developers in South Africa! -
To have a professional job that lets you work remotely from the comfort of your home in your own office; which pays you well enough but doesn't pressurize you into unachievable deadlines. One that gives you ample time to relax and do some part-time projects for yourself. One that lets you spend time and contribute to the communities you're part of and help you grow both professionally and within the community.
Oh, and best of all, work in the open - open source, open culture and transparency. -
Any good async (if possible, also pipeline based) Networking libraries for C++ on Linux? I want to create a small Server which should be able to handle a big amount of TCP connections (~500) at the same time, using threadpools maybe, something like Netty for Java would be the best.9
-
the best part?
90% of the time i've to deal with a computer
the worst part?
10% of the time i've to deal with stupid human beings -
When recruiters send you shit like this:
"I have an exciting opportunity on hand that I hope will be very much of interest. Please share your best contact number / time to call for a confidential discussion. Kindly find my contact number below if you want to contact me directly. Thank you and look forward to hearing from you."
Just fucking tell me the position you are hiring for! It saves time 😡2 -
Best and worse IDE feature for you.
Me :
IDE : VS2019
Best : Conditional break points (cf image)
Worst : Git branches management (For example : can’t delete multiple branches at the same time)14 -
My biggest dev sin is premature optimization. I'll try to produce the best possible code without the need for it to be there. I will waste my time thinking of wierd edge cases that can be handled with a simple if-else, but why not tweak the algo to handle them internally.
-
The best part of being a developer is that you can work and develop at the same time without conflict. Even when you're not on the team.

https://mosh.org, together with GNU Screen running on the remote, is just the best when I'm trying to fix something on my server while I'm in the fucking forest with bad reception that would cause normal ssh sessions to kill themselves all the time

I don't know how it works in other countries, but in Hungary the best workplace where you can have a beer and good time with your colleagues after work. Is it same thing at your country? :)7

Blah! Fucking Windows 10 thinking it knows what's best for me! 8:30 PM was not a good time to install some updates, you fuck!
Never thought I'd say I regret saying goodbye to Windows 8... -
Best feeling I've felt all week: Even though I don't have time today to install it, I got Wi-Fi on the minimal install ISO of Gentoo to work with almost no configuration. My shitty ass dongles actually work???

What's the best passive income for you? With small effort/capital but with big returns in a short period of time? Also high chance of working/succeeding.
I don't want to be an employee forever :) thanks!11 -
Dear Atom,
I'm sorry, but it's time. I know that we had many great times together, but I will be switching to Visual Studio soon. It's not your fault, you can blame Microsoft if you want. It's just that Visual Studio will have better git integration. And the fact that you will probably be cancelled. I hope you the best. Make the best out of the little time you still have.
Sincerely,
TomW1 -
Thank you those who tried to help me with my problem but I'm still not the best at this even though I've been doing for quite some time. I'm sorry I used some much of your time earlier also I apologize for calling out @example-user3

Fuck me man this is the second time this week! Planning on going fully to Ubuntu mint.... But I'm not sure if that's the best solution for me
Need a good distro for web development

i am so excited about my first collaboration in 12 years! finally someone considers my capabilities as useful. now i just hope to not mess up the repo.
last time i was pair programming with my best friend, but since i moved all of this fell apart. -
Every developer thrives to be the best. But, it's not only the skills, hard work or knowing infinite languages makes you the best. It only makes you the good.
Along with skills, hard work & the languages, the best one needs to have those instincts about the possible solutions to a problem and ability to decide and implement the most efficient solution cleanly in least amount of time.
I'm thriving to be the best. Are you?3 -
My best CS teacher experience? Well, I've only taken one computer science college class(dual enrolled while in high school) but I think that I got the best possible teacher for that class. He wasn't a full time teacher, he was just part time from another company and was teaching Java.
It was great to have a teacher who was not a teacher by profession and actually knew the industry. Again, this was my only CS class, but I think that, from stories I've heard, I got lucky.1 -
Pluralsight or lynda or udemy or udacity or treehouse or tutsplus or edx or coursera or codeacademy or codeschool or video2brain
Which one is the best for JS related courses?
Currently I use pluralsight, udemy and udacity
So much to learn so little time :|5 -
What are the best practices, which helps you follow "Pomodoro technique" and avoid wasting your time in general?3

!Worst, being put on the project a day before release
!Best, finding and fixing all the data model issues before release, so that the next time I have to pull stats about the system, everything actually makes sense, as all foreign keys and indexes would be explicitly defined for once.5 -
Best tip for getting unstuck? If it's after your usual leaving time, GO HOME.
So many times I solved the problem right away the next morning. Only wish I followed my own advice more often... -
Worst: Having Toolchain Problems while responsible colleague is on sick leave and a software release is tightly planned
Best: Fixing that fucking toolchain, delivering in time and getting commendation from SW Project Lead -
You know my best productivity hack was about my university hack was about food!!
We should reserve food 2days before the day we want
When time pass we should wait for someone else to cancel his/her,then reserve that one.
So my script checks canceled food list every 800ms and pick and reserve the best one for me asap. 😎😎2 -
Best experience: Getting my first contract for a major project, and landing a new job with a web agency for the first time!
Worst experience: Underestimating the contracted project, and having to learn while working on the project.
In the end it's all great experience, and reminds you that your always learning on the job. -
Just Sharing !!?!?
One of my friend was working in Android and he used to tell me at that time Cross Platform wouldn't work as native languages are the best.
Now he is working on flutter and he tell me React Native/ Ionic wouldn't work as in next year flutter will be on the top !!?!3 -
Worst experience of 2020 for me was:
👎 that I had 0 time to code my side-projects.
Best experience of 2020:
🙃 can't think of anything good haha -
Best team memory from university? That one time my groupmembers were helpful and I hadn't to do planning, coding and documentation all alone.1

tomorrow i will (finally) get a new teammate,
was working solo for 8 weeks now and in 2 months i will become parent and will take some time off
i wonder what's the best way for onboarding
i think i will try to do some pair programming until he gets the basic architecture and feels safe enough to work on his own
what's your experience on this, best onboarding you had?5 -

just feeling satisfied being able to program. even if it is just a small vba script again. but it accomplishes a feature in urgent need. best point is doing it within paid time.

ok, advice time!
The best way to learn a language is to set your mind into developing a specific program and then do it in that language.3 -
Again new language!!
This time scripting language...php and start learning today and finds interesting.

I start a project that follows the best architecture, best practices, etc..
i suddenly stop working on it until 3 days pre-deadline. at which point I end up building the shittiest, hackiest, thing that works enough to give to the client on time -
Best: getting a job in systems programming which was my dream since I wrote my first hello world about ten years ago.
Worst: recognizing that time isn't the restricting factor but energy, I'm often just too tired to work on side projects -
What is the best way for an intermediate programmer to gain experience? The jobs I had before gave little to no feedback on my work other than was it done on time and does it work, I'm not confident enough in my knowledge to contribute to open source and I feel like I need guidance on best practices and such. Any suggestions are welcome.1
-
For those of you that don't know what "Hofstadter's law" look it up it's perfect, and the best reason to tell a client double the amount of time it should take!
-
worst: choosing to be a business student instead of studying computer science
best: finally graduating from business school, and now i have time to concentrate on coding fully -
The time when I started building my first interpreter. I had no idea about them so I just copied the code from the book but it felt good really good and I learned so much about compiler and interpreter design. I guess copying the code and seeing things connect was the best and badass experience for me.

Always estimating for the best possible, quality solution. I refuse to write anything less than perfect. Also I estimate the time based on how I feel that day lol.7

The happiness of finishing a project that put so much stress into you, best feeling ever.
10 minutes later...
Others in office: Oh you're done. Could you help us with

At least give me time to catch a power nap.2 -

Anyone has experience with Linux desktop software development?
I'm gonna develop a GUI software that should work on most Linux distros.
What is the best way to develop for Linux? I'm not familiar with python, I would prefer C++. I've used gtk+ long time back. Is it still good, or are there better options nowadays?4 -
Getting your automated testing scripts to work every time your Jenkins/Docker container builds for the first time is the best feeling on a Friday

To not get fired. I'm a student at the best high school in my country, so it's really unusual that I work besides school. I want to prove that it's not only possible but beneficial. I already learned a lot, but if I won't get fired, I'll be close to senior level by the time I start working full-time, which will help a lot with university.1

In your opinion, what's the best website you've ever side, under a technical point of view? I mean, less lag, less bugs, less offline time. For me, it's lichess.org2
-
If you are learning to code like me just because a language is claimed to be the easiest to learn doesn't make it best for you. I spent so much time trying to learn python and struggled but switched over to Java which is definitely more complex than python but I've actually been learning it better. Find what's best for you!

Finally, after a long time and excuses....
updated my profile on job portals...
Ready to study ..... Best is waiting.... -
I'm sure like a lot of Devs of my generation, CS education didn't really exist when I was at school. All my knowledge has been self taught over time.
I think the best thing you can have is a good mentor and the opportunity to learn from your mistakes. -
Fact about Game Development.
1.You think of the best game dev idea ever.
2.You spend months or even years on that game.
3.After some time, You discover that the idea you had got has been used by a famous game.
4.And you die inside repeatedly.4 -
Even though my first rant was a rant ranting about rants this is definitely my favorite devForum so far. I'm new to this stuff so I've been checking out a few of them.
Plus I'm learning new stuff. Every time I don't get a joke I head over to Stack Overflow till I do. Probably not the best use of time but it helps to take a break every now and then. -
We can't say if the world was better before or would be better after...
There are good things and bad things every times..
We can't just say if everything is better or worse. Sometimes we want to stay in the present and sometimes in the past.
Things change, for the best and for the worse. We just need to move on or deal with it.
Just live with your time. You can just hope the best or try to make it possible. -
JCreator doesn't have a dark theme 😠. I know JCreator isn't the best, but that's the one my school uses. I'm trying to "learn" how to use IntelliJ. But JCreator will work for the time being.10

what is your best way of testing as human?
I create application, post on testing server, take a bath, eat something, watch a video or two, and then i start messing around, I found usually that time, your brain almost forgets everything, and works great for testing!
Share yours :) -
Being a front end develop of mostly PHP projects and also designer of everything for the company, probably best that I use OS X most of the time.
My place doesn't agree. They realise that I can't use Windows because it's support of PHP is laughable at best. However, they don't understand how difficult it is find a good quality piece of Ubuntu software for designing responsive websites. It just doesn't exist as far as I'm aware.23 -
Not learning how to study and focus on something at High Schools. I'm learning the hard way, i often don't have time to plan a thing as i wish, i just have to do a quick plan, hope for the best, and eventually learn something in the end.

Any ideas of the best way or algorithm to reduce the photo size with small effect to the photo quality....
I find it necessary for reducing the traffic cost and time of uploading and downloading the image8 -

Trying to install Manjaro for the first time. Keeps failing to install GRUB and giving a blank error message.
Been at it for 6 hours in a row already.
And they say Arch is the best...
Edit: I've even tried manually installing GRUB from the live boot usb, but that fails in a similar fashion :/4 -
I'd love to focus on music/performing and try my best to make money like that.
But if that fails, I'll just take all my savings at the time and become a vagabond. -
You guys had to ever deal with so called bench time 😵😵 so annoying after certain time period. Employers keeps complaining about bench ageing yet have no projects to offer. And best excuse for rejecting profiles within company for mismatch skills.5

I'm going to have test on monday about this one subj and today was the last theory class before the test. When the teacher asks about the time complexity of an algorithm in the best case some people reply "when n is 1". I can hear the teacher facepalming already LoL

Unpopular opinion. IE6 stuck around for so long because it was the best browser in its time. It's horseshit today but only because that generation liked it so much they couldn't bring themselves to leave it.8

So, I had a friendly debate with my senior dev today working over this feature.
What do you say is the best approach?
1. Optimize at the time of building the feature.
2. Do the feature work, optimize all at once. (let's say on a time cycle).5 -

I'm a dev with a full time job and a family. Any recommendations on the best way to pick up side work in the US that won't completely blow out a work life balance?1

Anyone who tells you there is no time constraint is on drugs. There's no such thing. At best, there are just secret deadlines that crop up as you're getting close. It's just a fucking con to get you to build unimportant shit, and work your ass off to meet some artificial deadline at the end.

Mondays aren't the best time for me.
If it is a lazy weekend, this is the routine:
Sleep most of the morning in, wake up - do things, 10PM, think of some code to work on. 11PM, yeah, enough energy now - lets code! -
Best way to learn UI/UX & front-end languages?

Blessed with a best boss and the worst client! Literally got a fucking rude and stupid client, who often tries to mock developers in the team, but got a great boss who saves your ass like a pro and doesn't let your self confidence and motivation crash at any point of time!

Unlocking your potential takes time.
Throwing away time is so easy to do and we are all guilty of it. How much of your time have you wasted not living up to your potential? The answer is brutal and may overwhelm you.
You have probably wasted some of your time but at least you haven’t wasted your whole life, yet.
You still have time and that’s the best reason to stop wasting it and unlock more of your potential. It hurts to know you have been lazy or procrastinated, but it hurts even more to ignore that fact and pretend everything is great.

Best tool: something similar to what I am already comfortable with and have low learning curve and gets the work done. Jet Brains IDE, Sublime text, Google sheets, zsh.
Worst tool: Something which will take me long time to learn and get used to. Vscode, powershell, chrome, vim.1 -
In the first place I dont do it that often in private projects because the estimation is always wrong.
At work i just think about best and worst case scenario and the average time it could take. If the the worst case scenario is really time intensive and there are a lot of factors that could go wrong in contrast to the best case, I significantly increase the estimated time for the task. Otherwise its 1/6 best case; 1/6 worst case; 4/6 average time2 -
Best experience: Writing code for 2 hours straight, running for first time and it works perfectly. The feeling is euphoric

Anyone know what's the current situation with part-time jobs in the web development field? I want a job but I'm in college so full-time is a no-no. I've been trying to find something part-time (internships mostly) but I'm not a US citizen (some sites require that) and I'm looking for something remote, and that's been pretty hard to find. Any ideas where I can look for this stuff or if such jobs even exist?
The best I've managed to find are full-time internships, I tried applying to them seeing if I can work part-time instead but no one mailed back :( -
Best part of being a dev? Being able to build programs and websites which is my hobby, for money. Also, me and my girlfriend met because I was the only website builder at my school at the time, and she needed a website for a project. At this time, we're almost 3 years together 😊 I'd call that pretty damn awesome
