YouTube: tapping like 1px out of the like button, obviously you want to reply to the comment
Facebook: let's just remove the like button altogether, only exposing it to the comment section
DevRant: let's make it possible to double-tap anywhere on the post to upvote it
Only one of them did things the right way 🤨8 -
Real programmers don't comment their code. It was hard to write, it should be hard to understand.24
-
Code not working.
Comment out code.
Slowly rewrite it bit by bit till it works again.
Check against commented code.
They're the same.
Wtf.
Seven hours wasted on this shit :/3 -
Hello, anyone still interested in seeing my setup/battle station?
If yes, I'll post it in the comments ;D
Edit: posted it in a comment 😊45 -
A wise man once said:
Real programmers don't comment their code. If it was hard to write, it should be hard to understand.
😂😁10 -
*Posting screenshot about random stuff*
Typical comment: Why are you using light theme, oooh my eyes 😨
*Posting something related to Windows*
Typical comment: Why are you using Windows, use Linux like "pro", btw I am using Arch 🙄
*Posting something related to IDE*
Typical comments: use vim, why are you using that
*Posting something related to Java*
Typical comment: Java is slow ( 🤮 ), use Python it's cool.
*Posting something related to JavaScript*
Typical comment: js is cancer, get rid of it and use {some_other_language}
Just a normal day on devrant 🤷
(not mentioning of course non dev related sick comments)
to be continued44 -
I tagged myself in a comment, and it notified me... 😆
No idea if this is a DevRant thing of a DevRantron thing.. Both..?32 -
@Root has a code review.
CR comment: “Why would you do it this way? It’s awful. Clean it up!”
Totally fair. I had copied the legendary dev’s code, and it was ick. Cleaning it was easy and enjoyable. I cleaned the source, too.
CR comment: “Why would you touch this? It’s outside the scope of the ticket. You could get it working without changing all this.”
Revert…
CR comment: “The interfaces don’t match. Now it’s confusing, and that makes it harder to maintain.”
🤦🏻♀️16 -
Why does it say someone +1'd your rant/comment in the notification while the person actually ++'d it?
a+1 and a++ are not the same.
@dfox I don't like this.25 -
working on an android app. the guy who wrote it is a complete retard designed it and made it overcomplicated and unmaintainable now no one can change anything without breaking all that shit ... found this comment, someone else tried to do it and failed miserably apparently.2
-
This has to be the funniest IT fail ever. https://m.reddit.com/r/...
Found it in a comment somewhere on devrant (i forgot who posted originally, but this is me giving credit)9 -
At least, it was honest comment by developer........
Have you ever encountered such funny statement/code ?3 -
When you see a comment like this in your codebase:
// I don't know what it does, but touching it will break it!4 -
!rant
Just read a DevRant comment and it made me laugh out loud. Looked at the user and it turned out to be an old comment of mine. Looked at the upvotes ... at least I think I'm funny. 😂3 -
Wondering around some code and I found:
// The next few lines of code should be fairly self-explanatory
// ...
Well if it were so self-explanatory then why TF putting up a comment here!!
Git blame file
Oh sugar it was written by me...1 -
@dfox
just thought about it...
why not devrant rubber duckies?
(this might be proposed in some other comment/rant already, didnt check for it)6 -
When you have trouble naming variables, begin writing the comment for what it should do and the name will come to you :)7
-
A comment on my last rant reminded me about this.. one of the most hilarious trends/pranks/scams.. the number of people who fell victim to this is quite more than what I thought it would be..3
-
Comment the "why", not the "what". If your code needs comments to explain what it does, rewrite the code (use good, descriptive identifiers).3
-
When you write code and forget to comment it, and then you come back and try to figure out why the heck you wrote certain parts of it.
Let this be a lesson for future me.7 -
For those of you who are blessed with being able to use new technologies, enjoy it. I just got handed another system to maintain.. last comment in the code was written in 1995.9
-
!rant
I got a confession to make...
Sometimes when I find a rant interesting, agree with it, in general, have a positive reaction to it, I forget to ++ it...
Sometimes I even comment and don't ++ the rant or comment that I've seen...
I'm sorry to everyone who I didn't ++ and deserved it.9 -
I always wanted to have comments in JSON files, but I just discovered a really good alternative:
{
"//": "This is a comment",
"somekey": "somevalue"
}
Looks kinda ugly but it works! No need for special unconventional parsers and shit.29 -
Let's comment out this block of code so later we know we have this feature and bring it back if we need it.
Later: commented code everywhere, literally everywhere!!! Shit7 -
I'll mail a brand new devRant squishy ball to the first 5 people who make a devRant-related tweet (including @devrantapp) in it and link to it in a comment on this rant. Go!20
-
1:1 ++ to comment ratio and a 1:10 rant / comment ratio.
This wasn't even that intentional, well, of course I ++d 23 rants for it to be a perfect match but almost 100% legit lol4 -
The one who said "Code should comment itself" must not have used assembly.
I literally wrote this 30 seconds ago and I can't work out what it does now...1 -
I often times write code and think to myself "I don't have to comment this, it's obvious what is going on", only to find myself back at the same code, figuring out wtf it does...1
-
PSA: Proposal for the posting of third party content.
I know we all love ourselves some Dilbert or commitstrips or xckd BUT could everybody just give credit where credit credit is goddamn due!
Leaving a link isn't that hard!
Just put it as the first comment if you don't want to have it at the end of your rant.
Also for xkcd specifically put the alt text in the first comment as well. It makes the comics even funnier and shows that you are more than a half witted copy pasting monkey. -
Fuck.
I cant comment or do ++ -- when I am in China.
Only can read.
It always throws error after certain period of time.
@dfox13 -
Devrant feature: It would be cool that when you wanna write a comment, it doesn't open a new page, but a textarea appears at the bottom, so I can re-read the other comments and the rant without going back.19
-
Just waiting for the day were a head hunter mail starts with: "We saw your profile on devRant and found it very interesting how you comment your daily anger while being a dev....."3
-
Just found the comment
// Wins a prize for the longest class name.
in a class with a 36 character name.
Didn't believe it and checked all classes: We do have a class with a 68 character name.4 -
-> everyone at the company uses git
-> asked to change some stuff
-> boss says "don't remove the old code, just comment it in case we need it in the future"

Just accidentally found out that double tapping a comment/post ++s it.
I feel like this feature has been a thing for a long time but I forgot about it2 -
FINALLY got my Raspberry Pi Zero W after 2 months of waiting, comment me some cool projects to do with it20

Be nice if tapping on a comment notification would open the correct rant and scroll it down to where it actually happened 🙃15

about:DevRant
Every time I write a comment or a rant, I edit it a bazillion times. I try to fix up spelling, grammar and wording.
Who else edits their rants and comments too much?7 -
Me seriously debugging someone's code.Analysing the code for 15 minutes.I reach end of file and I encounter a comment saying that this file is not being used and he doesn't have time to remove it!2

I tried to crochet a pusheen.
It didn’t turn out the way I envisioned. “Maybe googly eyes will help!”
…. I have had mixed comment on whether it makes it better or worse. 😅6 -
Friend - could you comment your code, so I can review it pls.
Me - *comments "gets shit done" ,
"Does some shit ",

I am sooooo very happy & grateful that my coworker wrote down this comment.. I'd have been lost without it! :/
-
F***!!! I can never post a rant/comment without making a typo and then realizing it and then editing it. Evry single one is edited.... why??😲5
-
Sometimes am really pissed off with stack overflow, it won't let you comment if you have less points.
Its like yeah, you can make an answer with every stupid shit possible but no, you can't comment or get any good author's attention, he might be meditating -_-6 -
I think I've reached a new level of procrastination, where I write the whole program in a comment in pseudocode instead of actually writing it in a programming language.5
-
It seems like there are more lower-quality or duplicate comments on rants these days.
Please, save me some time and show a little respect for members of the community by ++ the comment you agree with instead of adding a nearly identical comment and tagging the commenter.
Additionally, comments like '@commenter 😂' when the great comment is still at +0 generally don't add to the discussion and should probably be downvoted.
Comment if you think you can add something, not just because you saw it.11 -
Made me always think something like:
Code: should i delete it or just comment it out?
Files: should i delete this file or just rename it as .old?
OldHW: should i put it in the bin or i can recycle some parts?
Etc...... -
Someone commented the import block with “This is the import section”
I really wanted to add a comment under it that said “no shit”4 -
LMAO. Had a tough day and finally heading home with most likely the last bus for today.
But his comment made my day. 😆
// I genuinely found it so funny hence shared in joke 😬4 -

Why is it so hard to build reputation on stackoverflow?? Can't upvote, can't comment til I get 50 reputation, can't ask for question clarification so I can answer a question except in a comment...6

There is this abstract class with a single public method in it.
Above it a comment, change back to protected ASAP.
That comment is from 20131 -
Rereading old code I wrote and asking myself questions while reading it...then reading the next line, a comment, answering those very questions.
Past self. Thank you very much. 😎 -
Back in the day, it was a kind of unwritten rule that you would ++ the ranter when you posted a comment on their rant... or was that just me?4
-
Back then when I was working on a website logic, I didn't want to comment my code. Despite that, I wrote some things which were obvious and I thought it would be funny to explain obvious things in code. I made a joke out of commenting.
Recently I needed to use a part of the code for a different project and the comments were exceptionally helpful and I would be lost without it.
So, kids, comment your code!14 -
REAL Programmers Don't //COMMENT their </CODE>.
If it was HARD to WRITE
It Should be HARD to UNDERSTAND

"Mh, I should just write a short comment instead of writing a novel"
// This is a fucking detailed explaination of this shit, even though you can clearly see what it does because I usually write clean code. Also, it's a one-line comment, so have fun side-scrolling -
I'm pretty sure people here might have noticed this by now, but why is it that the button is '++' but the notifications say '+1'? Shouldn't it go "<someperson> has ++'d your rant/comment"?6

I learned one thing.... That how I can copy paste any thing in my code and comment it as "magic happens here do not touch."
Yeah thats my code learned from documentation (image below ) -
That moment on Devrant that someone thinks your comment is a vigenère, while it actually was some random generated text in my pocket while cycling home.

Writing code is like writing poetry. You put your soul into it, you create something so beautiful that everyone appreciates it, but no one fully understands it. So comment your fucking code!6

Based on @darksideofyay "poll feature" request I made a simple bot to make them.
Just post this as a comment:
@PollBot Q: <Your question>?
A:
- <Answer 1>
- <Answer 2>
// Up to 10 answers
It will post a comment for each answer, just upvote the one you like (look at the upvotes to see the result of the poll).
P.S. It's not ideal and it's running on a mini PC in my house, so it could fail sometimes. :P34 -
I love when @GodHatesMe comments on a rant and people start replying.
I read their name + comment as a single sentence.
@GodHatesMe Because tabs are better, obviously! (fake example)
It literally changes every point people try to make.2 -
HOW. IN THE WORLD. COULD IT BE SO DIFFICULT TO COMMENT THE CODE I WRITE MYSELF ?
After my first project (you know, the "Working project I made for fun long ago" code everyone did once, but when you look at it again it looks like sorcery and there's no way to understand it ?), I decided that I'd comment almost everything I'd do... But...
When I begin a project, it's fiiiine and I do my comments the way they should be... AND THEN, WHEN DIFFICULTIES ARRIVES AND I START TO BE TIRED (ie : always) THEY START TO INCLUDE INSULTS OR WEIRD JOKES ABOUT THE PROGRAMMING LANGUAGE, MOVIES REFERENCES, AND SOMETIMES THEIR LANGUAGE VARIES. (Like, that project you're doing in English and suddenly there's a comment written in French in the middle of that)
Soo, yeah, even if I do comment my shit now, it isn't more helpful, lol. Maybe I should listen to relaxing music when I code err.
Oh, comments. Damn comments. Someday I'll do those correctly. Maybe.8 -
Ask fairly technical SEO question on Stack Exchange. Only response is a comment telling me it's be easier to do it differently and use HTML instead of Javascript.6

There was this random image on devRant.
Yepp, it is Brainfuck once again.

Comment a 1 if you’re a web dev.
Comment a 2 if you’re a game dev.
Comment a 3 if you’re a data scientist.
Comment a 4 if you’re in cyber security.
Comment a 5 if you’re in IT.
Comment a 6 if you don’t fit any of the above categories and you code only in PHP and refuse to learn any other language because you think PHP is the future.50 -
Not sure to delete this block of code... or just comment it out until product owner changes her mind!3
-
@dfox @trogus Any chance we'll be able to have the comment box a bit smaller and display the current thread at the top of the screen while a user is adding a comment? It would also be cool if we didn't lose everything we typed in if we clicked on the X before posting a comment. I know sometimes I have to take another look at the thread to make sure I am replying correctly. Keep up the good work, guys!2
-
PR reviews, people leave great comment, some suggestions and there could be a discussion.
But please don't be the person who goes there and add those weird and useless comments such: "CI failed, your PR is behind dev branch..."
That's the role of the provider(Github, Bitbucket.....) and adding that comment is just a waste of time.
This start to happen more often and I had to rant about it :D2 -
It took me way too long to understood what I wrote few weeks ago. After looking at the code for few minutes and looking at my db structure, I finally realized. I also instantly remembered that I wrote that "user is shown as ad" comment hoping I will not confuse myself in future. Apparently I failed.
Temporarily added next line of comment to help the future me.
Deep down I know that I should change function name itself to become clearer, more meaningful and easier to understand.
But writing that comment, making those screenshots, combining the 2 images in Pinta and writing this rant is faster than thinking the new name.3 -
!metarant
Why do the notifications say "<insert your name here> +1'd your (Rant||Comment)" when it should say "++'d your (Rant||Comment)". 😜6 -
Bug fixed! Commit, close ticket.
Ticket reopens. Dang.. let me test it. Still fixed, wtf? Send message to QA guy that opened it again.

PR comment: You don't need this useCallback and this useMemo, it's premature optimization, this component will not have a lot of rerenders anyway.
*remove it and merge it*
Few weeks later...
Slack message: why the app is so slow???
*opens a PR putting back all "premature" optimizations*
PR comment: Hum... I don't think that's it, but let's try it.
*merge it*
*slowness is gone*
Slack message: wow! How did you figured out so quickly???
Me: I was lucky, I guess ¯\_(ツ)_/¯2 -
Will be offline for few days.

When you click on a notification about a comment, does it take you directly to the comment or the rant page? I always have to scroll down to find my comment. It's not a link!
Anyone need below features?
# 0 It would be good to have your own username/comment highlighted differently so it's easy to find our own comments.
# 1 we should have a scroll to bottom option for a rant. For a huge rant when you click on notification you need to scroll down to bottom manually to check new comments. -
This kind of stuff is what causes developer's to loss their mind. If you have to write a comment saying do not use a function, REMOVE IT!1
-
An excerpt from the encyclopedia of "Developer Confessions":
At times, when I have no clue what some code does, I comment it out to see what breaks. Sometimes I just want to see the code burn.3 -
You know you're in for a fun time when you open code you wrote the previous night and a comment starts with "Fuck this, it works, sober me can deal with it"
Why do I do this to myself .-.3 -
When a user deletes a comment, it would be more ideal if the comment was tagged *deleted rather than entirely removing it. Sometimes this makes other people's comment sound out of context whereas they where referring to a previously existing comment.27

Me: Ah, that solved my problem. Let me share what worked for me by adding a comment to the already posted solution. Seeing that the solution didn't completely solve my particular issue, maybe it will help another poor soul.
Stack Overflow: You need a reputation of 50 to comment. You're reputation is only 25, you are crap and nobody wants to hear your solution that could "help another poor soul". It would probably just add clutter and help nobody. You are crap and nobody likes you. Good day to you." -
!rant, but a feature request.
@dfox, whenever I use the comment box, it covers the whole screen. So, if I wanna tag somebody in my comment, I gotta close the comment box once, memorize their username since there's no autocomplete on @'s and then type back.
Either the comment box could be shortened, or autocomplete be added to user tag function, which could atleast detect the users commenting on the current thread (since programmers suck at memorising).
What say, DevRanters?5 -
It is weird how nobody calls ++ button as increment button. After all saying I incremented your rant/comment makes more sense than I ++ your....
Or do you call it increment/decrement but just write ++?5 -

Show a comment field below a discussion, with rich text and link functionality, to inspire people to craft a detailed answer.
Maybe they will forget to type Ctrl+A, Ctrl+C before hitting send.
So when they do, show a message that "you must be logged in to comment". Use a JS SPA to make sure that there is no way for users to restore their drafted comment. Don't show it after they logged in. When they use their browser's back button, they surely want to exit the application, so make sure to discard any transient data in that case.
Seen on WordPress.org using their infamous Gutenberg block editor.7 -

Don't worry, here we say your code should be readable enough and no comments are required.

Fuck you Jira, for your shitty implementation of the board, which causes written comments in tickets to simply disappear.
You clicked on another comment during edit? Say goodbye to what you have just written!

This is how my coworker does code reviews... imagine comment on a line of code:
"Oh why does this not do this and that.
Edit: Oh I've read few lines below, now I understand. But this may break when this and that.
Edit: Nevermind I realized, that never happens, forget about it."
Let me just emphasise, that this is single comment, so it's basically editted multiple times, before submition.
Like wtf, just delete the comment then?!2 -

"The Perils of Overzealous Code Commenting"
In the land of code, where bugs roam free,
There lived a developer, a comment enthusiast, you see.
Their code was a masterpiece, a work of art,
But the comments? Oh, they took it too far!
For every line of code, a comment did appear,
Explaining the obvious with a touch of fear.
Their obsession with comments, though well-intentioned,
Left fellow developers scratching their heads, bewildered and pensioned.5 -

The title got as value "and another one", when I removed it it became "this is some comment" removing that resulted in the value "some text"1 -

I wonder would it be good if while replying a comment of a rant show the comment we are replying to.
Sometimes i just forget what i want to write, so i need to go back to see the comment.3 -
Bugreport @dfox or @trogus
On the Android app, comment a rant and remove it (modify -> delete). After that the last comment before your's will go all the way to the bottom, instead of having a "spacer" for the social buttons.
Can anyone confirm it?10 -
Hilarious comments check it out on the cancer (stackoverflow.com) 😂

Reading documentation for 3rd party software... come across a code snippet which references a class. The class is spelt correctly in the comment but wrong in the code!
What??? Surely if you're going to get it wrong it would be the other way round :/ -
- Bug-Report -
Description:
If you go to the comments section on your profile and click on an comment you made to a collab, devRant will load it as a normal rant instead of a collab and, therefore, nothing is shown.

devRant Version:
1.9.0.3
Steps to reproduce:
- Write a comment to a collab
- Go to Profile -> Comments
- Click on that comment
- It will load it as a normal rant (See image)
Actual behaviour:
Show as normal rant
Expected behaviour:
Show as collab
I hope you can reproduce...
@dfox, @trogus8 -
When commenting it would be nice to see the comment you are commenting against. Often they are long with several points and you can't refer back to it8

#kotlin
when you don't know whether you are writing code, or is it a comment.
doing #java for couple of years has its effects. -
THANK YOU DEVRANTS for supporting comment modifying!!
My crappy Samsung Galaxy routinely screws up words and punctuation, and I don't always remember to read it before sending. You've helped me seem articulate and non-idiotic.1 -
I don't get annoyed so easily I think.. but when it comes to HTML... why the f*** do the comments have to look like something the cat just shat out?? Why doesn't it support one-line comment?? It's such a struggle to type...2
-
I cannot get my head around this comment
Does it mean write to console with "caution"? Or is it an obscure tribute to Dragonlance?5 -
Spent 10 minutes investigating why I can't hit a certain breakpoint. Find out I put it on a comment by mistake.
Fuck Android Studio 😡9 -
New Marketing Person: [via slack] Hey! I left a comment on the JIRA ticket. I didn’t know how to tag you so I’m messaging you here to make sure you see it.
Me: [slack] Ok, thanks for letting me know. It works the same way it does in slack. Type “@“ followed by a name.
Me: [inner monologue] 🙄 You could have also just Googled it instead of expending energy and time on this slack exchange.
Same person leaves another JIRA comment later… and doesn’t tag me…Why do I even bother to be helpful…2 -
I am working on an AoK bot. It worked before but now it fails on me. It says: {'success': False, 'error': 'Invalid comment.'}
I don't know why.
This is the comment: "@retoor debugsemiss everything and nave the and resorts they're not paying much to clean a fucking roomic lolg creating of my phoprooting such is the quoting this kidle... Noh ot inuforian times fined the apposivy suistlondlan't by imprymarbygind. Metwary nate ?"
Call method:
```
async def post_comment(self, rant_id, text):
payload = dict(
rant_id=rant_id,
comment=text
)
payload.update(self.auth_params)
async with self.session.post(f'/api/devrant/rants/{rant_id}/comments',data=payload, params=self.auth_params) as resp:
print(await resp.json())
```
Someone has an idea why it's failing? Also tried it with hardcored rant_id and message.23 -
I can't fucking read adobe *eks deh* ever as what they intended it to be, it always seems like the author of the comment / .. is a gen Z laughing out loud about something.6

Debugging an issue last week that involved a duplicate class. Took about 10 mins of debugging (console.log) to realize the function wasn't being called.
Me to the person I was helping: we should comment that this is deprecated, can you add it?
Today while reading over the (unchanged) code, I see a comment block above the class **that I wrote awhile ago** which says exactly that...1 -
What's worse than no comments? Outdated comments.
If you won't maintain your comments, I'd rather you don't comment at all. We are all better off for it.1 -
At the risk of starting a riot. What is your preference?
// space before comment text
//or jammed up next to it?
// Furthermore, do you capitalize your comments?5 -
when my rant get more than 5 comments.
#out of memory exception#
just drop it, unfollow and let them comment.
😜7 -
Always comment your code.
Write comments that explain the reason for this piece of code existing, and why it's written the way it is.
Don't write comments that explain what your code does (unless it's a comment which is going to be parsed as documentation for an API). If your code needs comments to explain what it's doing, you need to write clearer code. -
One letter story:
This is going to be weird--do it and we'll see how far we can go without going completely insane.
Whitespaces is one single comment, so is symbols such as the period sign. Be creative--use ampersands and quick way of writing longer things.
The rest of the rules go the same as for my previous rant. I'll write the first comment, then we COMMENT THE FUCKING SHIT OUT OF THIS GOD DAMN FUCKING RANT!17 -
Clowns who reply to each thread separately with a single comment on Slack instead of keeping it in the main window 🤡

Feature request: Able to subscribe to a rant and get notifs without having to leave a comment on it @dfox3

we have an unused variable and IDE is not happy about it

Boss: comment the variable out
The Godfather: add 'export' before the variable so IDE is happy2 -

that moment when you comment ''wtf'' on your mom's post without realizing and don't notice until she asks you about it3

To all devs who don't comment their Code
WHO THE FUCK SHOULD KNOW WHAT YOU INTENDED WITH YOUR FUCKING PIECE OF CODE
Well - I am one of you. I'm realy lazy in commenting. But it is very hard to understand a piece of code if you are not used to a complex architecture.
If there will ever be the chance of having another dev seeing your Code:
COMMENT IT1 -
!rant
Would love it if when I select a new notif for a comment on rant etc. That I was scrolled down to said new comment / mention, not sure if it's an easy one but would definitely be a nice touch, though I guess then you'd wonder what the rant was! Hmmm. -
I don't always wreck the production environment, but when I do it's because I'm trying to refactor a piece of code with a "// this is here for reasons, don't change this" comment above it.
-
Arg, Visual Studio 2015, stop trying to fix my comment indentation!
It's a comment and. It is NOT part of the code. Leave my formatting alone!!!3 -
When you're trying to figure it out what a code does and you find a line comment "A line off code to rule them all"

Dear DevRant: You should really, really make the textboxes get the focus when they appear, when adding a comment or a rant...
(or is it just me?)4 -
!rant
I am teaching some friends python, so i would you comment here challenges to do in it (eg. Python TicTacToe). All difficulties would be appreciated.7 -
Wouldn't it be awkward as hell if we would all only just rant in our native tongue ... Comment below your workaround, if needed 🤣9

featureRequest = true;
It would be nice if clicking outside the "Post Rant/Comment" box doesn't dismiss it, I almost lost a long comment a while ago due to wrongly clicking outside the post button (which is not small but somehow I am able to fuck it up lol)4 -
Every time I updated API document, I ask you to comment
You said it looks fine
And when we start integration, you said this need to change
🤷♂️ -
You know when you are interested in a topic or have a question, and you find it on stackoberflow or hacker news, but it is from 754 days ago ...
You are left wondering, should I leave a comment here or create a new thread ...1 -
I noticed a bug on devrant app on Android. Or is it a feature? Haha.
When you comment on a rant and then press Modify to change your comment, when you edit and save the edited comment you get to the updated one. If you press back you get to the previous one (not updated comment). If you try to reopen the rant you commented you see only the updated one.
So....here's a bug. What do I win?4 -
I don't understand why pressing the "Enter" button in YouTube comment box, doesn't post the comments. Instead they take me to a new line. Who else finds it annoying??6
-
Understand problem
Write solution
See it work on browser
Delete/comment solution
Write tests
See them fail
Restore solution
See it work on testing -
I've always found commenting my code tedious, is it better to comment as I code or wait until its stable and then comment all in one go at the end?9
-
When you comment on a comment and want to read again what exactly the writer meant and you tap on comment again after reading it adds the username again at the end of your text which is not really a bug but somewhat poorly handled...1

After being on devRant for a few months (previously with another account) I only now discovered you can like a comment/rant by double tapping it...6

Tfw you find a comment saying something needs to be tested when the system is in prod.
Narrator: they did in fact not test it when the system was in production -
This comment is why iis is an abomination for allowing multiple languages
/*Didn't know how to do this in php so wrote in asp just call it do do the task*/ -
@dfox Bug report:
Noticed a problem with the app counting the characters in comments. 3 or 4 times I’ve tried to write a comment that comes down to single digits remaining.
When trying to post I get a message like:
“Oops something went wrong trying to post your comment. It’s probably blank”
But, according to the counter, it should have been fine.3 -
The development team I lead. They don’t find it as funny when I comment “Now watch me Na Na” after their “wip’s”
-
Ok, I'm curious to know, who is the person who has been in devrant the longest?
Comment the date that you joined if it is earlier than the last person who commented.5 -
Die you know in gitlab the you can comment /tableflip and it inserts a tableflip emoji Like thing :D
-
I've searched but I can't find this having been asked before - sorry if it has. I'd like to be able to see the rant or comment I'm replying to at the top of the comment entry screen. Just helpful for context. Many thanks...1
-
Why does stackoverflow looks dead to me. Asked 2 questions this month , not even a single downvote or comment.
Is it only me?3 -
I remember someone ranted about something and there was a comment about ad blockers that was pretty good, in that it let you control what ads to watch so you could _bancar_ your favourite creators but don't be bombarded with shiet...
I can't find it. :(( Does anyone have any recommendation? Maybe one of them will be the one that comment talked about.
It was crossbrowser too, and maybe for mobile?1 -
Came across this comment on r/programminghorror/
> We're you talking with my co-worker? He's extremely abrasive, especially when it comes to anyone touching his code because "Now I don't know how it works anymore" -
Anyone here using couchdb? Any thoughts about it? Advice? Practical uses? Any comment is very much welcome :)2

Whenever someone gets married and makes a post about it on my facebook timeline, their friends start flooding the comment section with 'HML.'
Me, I always just strongly resist the urge to reply each comment with 'Hey, you forgot the \'T\' .'1 -
Found bug in legacy code with comment "4 days to release workaround, works predictably".
Added "No, it doesn't!" and committed to main branch before I start reworking the entire spaghetti mess of a codebase -
Feature request
When you click the notif of "more comments on a rant you commented", could it scroll down to the bottom?
Preferrably to the last comment you saw but that would require some more tracking3 -
Do you write your comments before or after you write the code?
Do you write var foo = 1; and then go back a line above it / beside it to comment, or do you write the comment line / block first prior to writing the code statement?6 -
I recently came across the "Xposed framework" for Android and it seems really really interesting to me.
I use it to playback songs on YouTube (app) while accessing other apps (simple but helpful) . Anybody else with any modules/experience/knowledge about the same, do comment, I wanna know more about it.7 -
YouTube comment translation feature is by far the best and most useful feature (in my opinion) YouTube has added since the creation of it, and then came the worst...1

Can someone code a chatgpt bot for devrant where it extracts transcript of a tiktok video and makes a comment/post on devrant
Example

Idea for devRant:
What if, when someone responds to a comment in a rant, it "links" said comment? Like the "Reply" function on Telegram?
Yeeeeeaaaah, I know that would technically be considered copying, but Whatsapp copied it and no one said anything, so... 😒
I think it would make things a lot easier when conversations in rants become more chaotic.
What do you think?5 -
on desktop:
to edit my post i have to copy it, delete it, add a new comment, paste it, correct it and post it..
i feel like i'm doing a git rebase on master1 -
Remarked out code which has been commented out since 2015, now been checked in with a simple line comment of todo above it .....
-
I've noticed that like other social media, people seem to ++ a comment or a post as a marker that they've read it. It's.. a bit misleading sometimes..3

Hi guys
I just made a lotto game
Here is the demo

Is it me, or when I make a comment on a rant, it ends up being two comments with the same content. It sometimes happens and the secondary comment stays even when I refresh the page. I think its the website that is badly programmed or something like that.14
-
@dfox I believe when you add a comment to devRant you should be able to attach img/gif to it via the website. Like you do when you Post Rant.3
-
What is it with colleagues here not even thinking of making a comment in code that directly interacts with hardware.
They will write to the same register 4 times with different values, which is intentional I believe, but not bother to put one comment in there vagely explaining that it is in fact not a copy paste error...2 -
Metatrader and its forum. I have asked a question 2 weeks ago, simple one. Just want to know how it calculates loss in backtest because it does not match my calculation. And nobody is answering. Then I go add comment to support thread, and my comment was deleted twice! wtf. And I cannot find in documention or in other forums my answer. Need to try stackoverflow maybe. In official forum they should know best. And it looks like it is active forum.6

If I only have 5000 page views my free tier commenting service allows. Is it necessary to let users know. Or is it alright for them to find out when they can't comment on my horrible site anymore until next month5

Someone from top company (German Automobile) commented that Indian coders are good but are not Craftsman in their development. I was very confused about that comment .. but if it's true . How should I improve it.3

Today I had a look at the Linux kernel on GitHub. There was a commit made by someone else which I tried to comment on. But my comment was not getting added— probably because it is not my PR. Is this a feature or a bug ?10

I feel a quick improvement to the UI could be if the Rant / Comment textarea had focus when it opens so you can start typing right away. Or is it just my setup (chrome / windows / pc / mouse / keyboard / screen)?2
-
I have a habit to comment every single line of code, this helps comprehension but this dirty the code and everyone complain. Is it any way to do such task.6
-
Is this a devRant bug?
I have a persistent (1) on my in-app notification bell (Android). I can't find any unread notification. It should be a comment notification. Maybe somebody generated such a notif, my phone picked it up, and then the other person undid the action that lead to the notif? (E.g. un-++, remove a comment or mention, delete their account, ???).
I see the (1) notification to on the web, and I can't find the actual notification there either!5 -
That moment your pair programmer doesnt comment his code whatsoever, and your'e spending half a day trying to understand what it was he's trying to do😠4
-
I keep coming back to this comment from one of the OGs of devRant and feel proud that I had the honor to get it.6
-
Not a rant, but just curious, comment which you like more, Java, or C++. (And your favorite editor/IDE for the hell of it)7
-
every time I commit an new brunch I comment it with " it's not a bug, is a feature. "... checking the commit some days later..." damn.. that's a big feature "1
-
The report button is in the place where reply should be.
I'm a lefty and even I use my phone mostly with right thumb. Also it's very easy to report a comment without noticing (happened to me twice. Reported a perfectly legit and appropriate comment because of awkward report action placement.
IMHO opinion the report action should be placed anywhere else in the post but where it is now.1 -
Instead of deprecating the class and adding a comment, why don't you just replace it with the new stuff? ffs, we estimated for replacing!
-
Being told all those crazy startup ideas by friends and family with the comment "this is so simple, I'm sure I can learn to code and do it in 2 weeks"

September : started programming in xamarin Android. Slow, buggy and undocumented as hell.
October :getting used to Android. Might be nice after all.
November :started programming at ios.
December 2nd:still can't comment on it. Program hasn't finished compiling yet. -
Is there a way to search within comments, or within comments of a user?
I cannot find a way on the desktop webpage. I don't use the app.
I am trying to find a post where someone asked for an analogy of Javascript to something in the home. I want to get the comment I made and save it. I was particularly proud of that comment.6 -
Comment one thing which you never want to miss in your life as a programmer.
For me it is semicolon " ; " ........ :D6
