I FINALLY DID IT!! I landed a job!! I'm going to be a firmware engineer!! Woohoo!! 😁
It only took half a year, but I finally got one, and purely off my own merit. It feels damn good when you get the job with no references or connections, just your own skills.
After a highly successful on-site technical/whiteboard interview, I was 90% confident I'd get it. The fact that my job search is finally over, is such a fucking relief. Good riddance to endless interview prep, applications & rejections.
I start on Monday. Goodbye freedom >.<19 -
When interviewing a dev, ask them what they think about time zones. If their answer is "fuck time zones", hire them immediately.4

Several years ago.
”Have you heard about that dumb new bitcoin-thing?”
”Ya, lol, what a waste of time and money! 😂”
🙂🔫11 -
Overheard some family members talking about me during a vacation about 3 years ago...
aunt: why is he that way?
cousin: he spent too much time on the computer while he was younger.
aunt: that's bad.
yeah.. now I make more than both of you and don't give a shit about you anymore, thanks 👍6 -
People complaining "oh I always have trouble figuring out if the clock goes forwards or backwards in October"
Bitch please, I'm dealing with 12 databases, with SQL dates as local timezone timestamps, and an influxDB in UTC. I'm dealing with a backend server configured in CEST and a middleware layer configured in Pacific time, and a hundred functions which try to keep everything straight because no one dares to migrate it all to UTC at this point.
In the whole argument about DST you hear about sleep psychology, electricity bills and farmers.
But what about me, the poor database administrator? What about all these ugly legacy systems, what about all the UX designers trying to fix time input pickers?
I spend 2 months a year in agony having nightmares of rips and folds in the flow of time. DAYLIGHT SAVING DOESN'T FUCKING MAKE SENSE HOW CAN TIME EXIST TWICE?17 -
Oh, it's been awful. A mandated email about washing hands. A slurry of awful jokes every time someone sneezes. Send help.8

After a long time in .NET and JavaScript, I have returned to Java today. I was quite happy about it for a few minutes!3

Rants about how big jQuery is (83 KB), misses project deadline trying to write efficient JS to "optimize" load time, eventually ends up saving 2 KBs.

It has been every loooong time since I have visited our huge local forest with its small mountains. About 10 years actually.
It feels great!2 -
So this is Reddit with a slick design specifically for complaining about how life as a programmer is annoying some of the time? I'm in.3

Telephonic "technical" interview at 5 in the evening
Interviewer : Tell me about yourself
Me : Blah blah...
Interviewer : Thank you for your time

Absolutely uninterested... no single counter question... Guess she just wanted to go home early... 😑6 -
Finally got some free time cook for myself a lunch...
Don't have worry about the company project anymore.

Tomorrow is the day I have been waiting for my entire career...
Tomorrow Microsoft stops supporting Internet Explorer! 🥳14 -
So, I set up my computer after moving and settling in.
Turns out all the jostling killed the pump on my water cooler 🙁 It now sounds like an unmaintained soviet train at full speed, and starts burning up. Poor thing.
Guess it’s time to build a new one. Though parts aren’t exactly available right now...
Bleh.24 -
I feel pretty good about myself right now. Just spent 40 minutes wasting a scammers time, and Damn it was fun 😂12

My first times today:
First time a droplet on Digital Ocean.
First time Nginx.
First time trying to separate mail and website servers.
First time using UFW firewall.
First time Ubuntu webserver.
First try all alone configuration of my webserver.
First time installing all the stuff I need on my own, like MySQL, PHP and so on.
First time only SSH access from the beginning.
First time deployment from bitbucket.
Do you have any advise what I should think about. Or what software I will need. Or what I should think about.45 -
After i read about Arch Linux for the first time here about a few weeks ago, i thought i'd give Antergos a try on my Laptop which i use solely for working. Found out that Matlab is supported, so i don't even need a VM.
First time having a Linux distro. Still feels a bit odd for being a Win only user for a long time, but i love the look and with every hour it gets easier. :)45 -
So.. we humans are never going to have total peace, are we? Yep, thought so. It’s about time I start accepting this fact.34

I see posts about automating your work flow, but if your aim is to save time by automation consult this handy chart4

As everyone were posting about their interview experiences. Now it's time to understand job requirements properly. 😂3

The great thing about coding is, every problem can be solved with logic. And the simplest solution is often the best one.
Often when I don't know what to do, I just keep thinking about what I want to have and break down what I need for that and in the end I always come to a good solution. And it gets easier from time to time. -
Office laptop takes one hour to boot. Reason why we can' t upgrade is to save money..what about my time...you pricks...8

I'm sick of all the people who are complaining about PHP as if it were a shitty language.
Watch your mouth next time you abuse PHP or at least try to do so after reading 'about' section of devRant.13 -

About week ago I finally upgraded to ios 12 and I really like screen time reporting. It forces me to spend less time using phone.
It lacks features like listening to music or books time, probably because it only measure screen time. Besides that it’s cool.13 -
It's sprint meeting day! Time to grab some coffee because it's going to be 5 hours of PMs ranting about tickets and progress. Yay!

i should be paid for the time i spend thinking about code outside of work. i really dislike doing that, but then my brain just decides to dream about code anyway and i wake up at 2am with ideas and a headache12

There was one time i went to Python dev position. HR company test was first of process and test was all about dotNet and C#, plus VBScript. I sat there until the finish time, did nothing.

Why is it that CS students with no industry experience lament about HTML all the time?
I don't get the weird obsession with talking about how it's "not a programming language"
No one who knows what they're talking about is claiming it is.
Hyper Text *Markup* Language.

Server admin: "When do I need to make this config change for you?"
Me (in my head): "You mean the one I put a note in the change request ticket about in ALL CAPS and surrounded by asterisks saying 3pm (aside from the scheduled time field that the ticket requires), and the one we then subsequently chatted about where I reiterated the criticality of the timing about and the one I copied you in the email chain about that said the time in big, bold letters the time? THAT config change?!"
Me (IRL): "3pm, please."
(does not inspire confidence, though better to be asked then they just go off and do it whenever the mood strikes I suppose, which HAS happened)3 -
I'm about to take my first real vacation in about a year. One of the things I'm most looking forward to? Time to work on personal projects.

I really don't like billing time for things I am not really sure how to do and need time to educate myself on. This happens more often than my wallet is comfortable with and I spend more time learning than making money. How do you go about staying in an estimate or fixed budget when something comes up that you don't know anything about?7

I'm tired of my boss complaining about anything Microsoft when he uses it all the time and can't even code anything1

I have a strict rule about putting my computer away by 7pm.
I've found that if I get started on something, no matter how stupid it is, I will stay up all night working on something. If I try to quit, I go to bed and can't sleep because I'm still thinking about it.
Setting a time gives my brain time to let go before it's time to go to bed.2 -
Checking for a hardcoded password and submitting User and password in a hidden Input each time.
Didn't know about Sessions back then -
People think Machine Learning is all about using Super Complex Prediction Models...
But turns out to devote most time in data gathering and data cleaning(preprocessing).2 -
Devs! Heard about this thing called going to sleep without dreaming about ways to fix a bug?
Whenever I force myself to sleep whenever I get stuck on a bug or confused about the implementation of a feature and started dreaming about the approaches I can take. Most of the time I wake up around 2 or 3 am to try out an idea I had and most of the time it works.
Now I fear this is becoming a habit. Is it something I worry about or ignore since my problem is getting solved?8 -
This node.js stuff had better be worth all the preaching I hear about here.
Time to build some web applications! :D2 -
Devs complaining about the automated test system cuz it reports errors all the time are like trapeze artists complaining about the safety net cuz it hurts when you hit the ropes.7

Decided to switch to Linux full time. I've spent the last week reinstalling the OS about once per day. Upside is that I can install my system with all my preferences in about 30 minutes flat !1

Our parents keep reminding us about the time change that happens every half a year. To remember that the clocks need to be adjusted. And we, the children, keep reminding them, that most devices are already connected to the internet and use the time servers for reference. Which surprises our parents every time. 🙃18

Mini-rant
Dear HR people, if you don't provide enough info about the positions that you have at hand forget about me wasting time on call-first acknowledgements to later on realize what kind of waste of time it was!
Sure, making business connections is important but without taking into consideration the other side time is all but respectful, in a professional context.
So, balance your shit and make the call worth the time of all the parties.
Fucking thanks.1 -
At my new job, we use WordPress. So obviously there's shitload of stuff to rant about. But because of those shitload WordPress stuff, I don't have the time to rant about it, and after work , don't wanna think about it.1

the first time I opened StackOverflow actually I think.
At least that was the first time I understood how much I still don't know about any topic at any one time.
Since then I think I was humbled enough to just assume I know nothing all the time and just being glad when I get to help someone with their problem -

How do you explain to your client/boss that you couldn't finish on time because you were too busy occupied freaking out about the deadline?2
-
If there's one thing I hate about devs is definitely when they get too emotional about the reviews they receive.
Doing a thorough review always takes significant amount of time and energy. It's about ensuring high quality of code, about functionality and best practices, ... It's also about learning: I learn from the changes being reviewed while at the same time I also try to teach the author as much as possible, giving down to earth opinions.
It's never (or at least should never be) about attacking the author. There really is no reason why someone would spend all this time getting overly personal.
I used to start my responses with (lousy) apologies for being "harsh", but stopped doing this now that my team understands all of this. It also helped asking them to do the same with my changes. The look in their eyes when they find something is simply invaluable :).1 -
Two weeks of camping ends tomorrow. Started missing coding after a week but no laptop carried with. Mind spends time thinking about projects to start.

Half of the courses we had in our college were about electronics. Except Microprocessors and Transistors, it's not relevant.
We even had chemistry and engineering drawing. So we essentially wasted more than half of our time.
Besides languages, weren't taught anything about real world software development.
Nothing about how to work with an existing code base, version control, design patterns, system design, creating a website, debugging, functional programming, scalability, reliability.
The industry should be involved in setting the syllabus and also contributing part time teachers.3 -
How about "version control blues" about version control tools being more trouble than help? Because I'm having some wonderful time with subversion for VS20102

So, about the devRant meetup(see previous rants), I didn't really hear anything about tomorrow, so just in case, I'm continuing with my proposal, it seemed more people were up for Sunday then Friday, so post the time you are free at on Sunday, along with your time zone(or UTC/GMT for privacy)30

Time to learn about code quality and tools I can throw my work at and get analyses back to help me not suck1 -
Hey Nodevember! Did you hear about the time a C++ conference decided to uninvite Dietz? Me neither. I have heard about the time a Javascript conference uninvited Doug Crockford though.

You guys had to ever deal with so called bench time 😵😵 so annoying after certain time period. Employers keeps complaining about bench ageing yet have no projects to offer. And best excuse for rejecting profiles within company for mismatch skills.5

When a job applicant on an assigment is asking me questions about the assigment i don’t have much hope for him/her... Maybe better next time

Can't really complain about hackathons, they've been great to me. Worked with new technology every time, so I've always taken massive positives every time.

It's about time we speak of enlightenment. Abide by it and all your problems will be solved--except your FUCKING code.2

Also, do you think it's possible to fill about 50 pages in 8 week time ? The short time is making me nervous -
When a manager / "architect" starts saying complete nonsense about how some technology works, because he read a bit about it on the internet, but you prefer to just let him talk than proving him wrong. Not worth my time...1
-
Has anyone of you ever dreamed of solving programming problems? I wake up still thinking about a problem that is totally unrelated to everything I do. Most of the time I even spent extra time still pondering about it even tough I'm very much awake. Maybe I need to stop staying at the office for 10 hours.2

First time pithing about startup concept in startup bootcamp, 2 fucking dead air (fuck....)

Time to complain about "Just do X". Often nerds ask broad, open-ended questions, and I see people giving lazy, low effort solutions. As a lazy, open guy, I sympathize. I just wish people gave better "just" answers. How about a few levels of abstraction above "doing" something next time! Tell someone to "just read this", or "just learn about this" instead! Please pass this on to your neighbor.
