⚠️ DEVRANTRON ALERT ⚠️
Make sure you've updated devRantron to v.1.3.6 since previous versions contains an XSS vulnerability.
<b>If this text is BOLD you're vulnerable.</b>
You can download the latest version at https://github.com/tahnik/...21 -
why programmers like cooking: you peel the carrot, you chop the carrot, you put the carrot in the stew. You don't suddenly find out that your peeler is several versions behind and they dropped support for carrots in 4.31

The day i found out how GitHub and Git actually work and how easy it is to manage versions rather than having a zip archive in Dropbox. I grew up so fast...T_T1

so,i made a website and uploaded it to my paid hosting...some pages were blank when accessed.did some testing and found out that was a php problem.contacted the support to enable error reporting for testing...he said that it can not be done...and that my code was the problem....spent 3h testing like a blind man...then my mother comes and sais this "maybe it's not compatible"she knows nothing about programming....then it struck me....fucking different php versions...i think i'm retarded sometimes...10

So in my culture when u have hiccups it is believed that someone is mentioning/talking about you, that means that hiccups are one of the first versions of push notifications 😅19

The number of people using high end versions of mac just for working on some spreadsheet and watching videos on youtube is just too damn high..15

A quick note about node.js security.
Decompiled Discord, a widely used chat app. Found 5 vulnerabilities (that are now reported.) Why? Severely outdated dependencies.
Cloned Mattermost, a business communication app like Slack, but open source, and (from their site) the Department of Defense uses it. Found 10 vulnerabilities (that are now reported.) Why? Severely outdated dependencies.
I get that some versions conflict, and in a fast moving enviroment, that is a huge risk - but update your damn dependencies.14 -
There are two main versions of Python.
When you want to have it work with both of them, things can get really ugly. :(6 -
I've recently red a blog post stating 'Google leaves x Million Android devices vulnerable to a new Exploit'
I don't really sympathize with Google, but it's simply the wrong message... It should be more like FUCK VENDORS, WHO WON'T SUPPLY UPDATES TO DEVICES OLDER THAN 1.5 YEARS
Seriously, it's them who make you stuck on outdated OS versions... Just imagine you could only install Windows Vista on your 2014 Lenovo ThinkPad, because it's considered outdated...
FUCK VENDORS (again, just in case)8 -
Just upgraded my company's ecommerce site to the latest versions of everything and nothing broke.
I don't trust it.4 -
That moment when u created a project and quite some folks forked it and continued their own versions, but then you realised that you've made a little mistake back then so now your dumb code propagated across humanity.
¯\_( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)_/¯2 -
I downloaded an API. Said API requires Java. Said Java version is 1.6... you can no longer download 1.7 or earlier versions..
RIP.12 -
Just started my new position and discovered that company's tasks, bugs & versions are managed in single Google Doc 😐9

"Read-only Friday" rule: On Fridays, you don't deploy new versions, don't merge code into production, don't update databases, and a lot of others "DON'Ts"4

When you are working on a feature and someone else is working on the same thing and you commit at the same time and now you have to resolve conflicts but both versions work2

Jokes aside, this got me thinking html is most used and most successful hacking tool out there.
99.99% of the time it's far easier to socially engineer and phish for existing credentials that scan networks, sniff ports and look for vulnerable versions of software, new vulnerabilities etc.
We (people) are ad always will be a zero day exploit.7 -
Oh, we don't know why it broke. I know you just did A HUGE FUCKING DATABASE SEVER UPGRADE to the server we're connected to, but no one understands this code, so can't update it to work. Can you roll back 3 VERSIONS so our application that hasn't had a code change in 11 years is optimized?2

*FourWeeks From Deadline*
Two CoWorkers: "Oh cool, Visual Studio 2017 is out, I am gonna switch"
Breaks the build.
They then tried to spend hours trying to get the project to work on both versions, with no success, then let us know.
I am just glad we use Git5 -

When your raspberry pi is bombarded with /phpmyadmin URL attempts in all its forms and possible paths and versions 😅
Like seriously? Who in there right mind uses phpmyadmin AND has it accessible to the public.
- there's no databases on this Rpi but you keep looking.11 -
The "new guy" just merged master into a release branch.
The build server started bumping versions on the release branch and build "corrupted" installers.
Another developer had to spend a whole day trying to remove all the invalid commits.14 -
A person just bought a 3000€ workstation and asked me to install cracked versions of Office, AutoCAD, full Adobe suite and Rhino with plugins. And he's going to use them at work to make money.
So, since I have to, I installed 2-3 years old versions of each, in English (he only knows Italian) and blocked all the connections so he can't receive any update/fix or use web related functionalities. I also disabled all autostarting components and contextual menu / OS integrations (although this can be seen as a plus).
When he's calling me asking to "fix" things, I will simply say "sorry, it's the only way for the crack to work, if you want everything you'd better pay for a license or else go open source".
Why can't people understand the value of the complex software they use? Just because it's not a material thing doesn't mean it's not a steal43 -
After 3 hours of struggle, I was able to setup multiple versions of PHP and configured easy switching on Apache on a fresh install of elementary OS.11

OK. FUCK YOU REACT-ROUTER AND YOUR FUCKED UP "SHOULD BE STRAIGHT FORWARD" IMPOSSIBLE TO FIND DOCUMENTATION AND HALF BAKED EXAMPLES OF INCONSISTENT VERSIONS.

I have just thought of the perfect solution when support for fucking ancient IE versions creaps in the requirements (and asking the assholes to produce numbers to support the crazy does not help)
Just do browser detection and if IE < 9 Replace body with one of those winXP alert boxes that tell them there Computer is infected and that they can get a free scan (it's what they are used to anyway). Put a link to the installer of your favourite browser over the entire image.😎
Good news is 100℅ code reuse! Works on every outdated IE and every website that requires IE support.4 -
Every student knows the struggle of opening the Downloads folder on a school computer. Gigabytes of information that will never be accessed again and at least ten versions of the same document.4

FUCK Android, whoever invented this piece of shit should be really proud of themselves... And yes, this rant comes from an iOS developer who's working on a project in react-native... Why the fuck everything should always work on iOS but the same thing is fragile as shit on Android? Why the fuck there's a thousand of different versions of every Android package and every single one breaks another? Why the fuck Android is so fragmented... If this piece of shit is the definition of "openness" then I'd really prefer the "closeness" of iOS... Totally reminds me of how much I hated IE6 back in the web development days73
-
I hate clients that tell the developers what to use without discussion.
We're paid to solve problems.
Dictatorship on tools and methodologies are okay with junior devs or interns, but when you have senior devs, it has to be a democracy.
Having limitations like browser versions or server capabilities are fine, but declaring which slider to use, you MUST use jquery, or all that jazz just grinds my gears.5 -
This has been posted a few times but I just want to reiterate for noobs that !Rant means NOT rant, like the C, C++, Python, Java, etc versions. Not like CSS !Important or ruby do_this!(indeed) etc.6

Managements definition of an MVP:
- Integrate our backend and database with a similar-ish, older internal system built on a different tech stack and different rules.
- Merge the functionality and delete the old one.
- Modify our system to accept 2 types of logged in users.
- Have 2 versions of our API that return different values.
- Update our mobile app to render different data based on which user is logged in.
- Onboard the old system users to this new system.
My definition of an MVP:
- Tell the store we are taking over, that they have to print their labels from our tool, and onboard the users to our app.9 -
As a Java guy starting to learn about JavaScript I have one question.
WHY ARE THERE 20,000 VERSIONS OF JAVASCRIPT???! WHAT MAD GOD APPROVED OF THIS AND HOW DO WE KILL HIM?
...I don't actually think it's that bad of a language though. :^)13 -
Client sends me their "about us" page in an image (second time they've done this after I've asked for text versions). Do you hate me or are you just a fucking moron. You don't write a book in an image. You don't send emails in an image. No you send it in fucking text. 😤2

Oh look, Facebook released yet another thing...
*half arsed celebration*
It hasn't been out 10 minutes but it's already the "BEST THING THAT EVER HAPPENED EVER"
Am i the only one that sees what they are doing. They are creating their own versions of popular projects to gain a monopoly on open source...what a bunch of cunts.
P.S - OPEN SOURCE SHOULDN'T INCLUDE FUCKING PATENTS.

Seeing there are many people (including me) that cant acces the hackathot, I thitk, it would be nice if we as community could hold an unoficial remote hackathon.
My ideas:
-5 days to code
-github / skype
-chess engines which have to compete eachothers to find the winner
-5 teams
-should be compatible with windows, linex, mac (either an interpreted language or different recompiled versions)
Tell me what you think in the comments23 -
So, I'm studying computer engineering in school, so a lot of people have decided I'm the tech one in the group and come to me with all there computer problems.
I'm constantly explaining basic things about their computers, how to exit vim, why using git is a lot easier then having 100 versions of files, how to change directories from the terminal. Simple things like that and while I normally don't mind, all these people are also in computer engineering and should really know all this stuff too.8 -

I don't know why I'm having this conversation so often lately.
Someone: "Hey, did you know that Microsoft said that Windows 10 would be the last version of Windows?"
Me: "Yes."
Someone: "But isn't that ridiculous? It would get old at some point, right?"
Me: "...have you heard of macOS X? It's also »the last version« of macOS. But it has still undergone a lot of changes."
Someone: "Hm... I haven't thought about that."
Seriously, just because a company says something would be the last version of a product, it doesn't mean they don't update it anymore, they just take that version, make it a brand and use a different number for versioning (macOS Mojave 10.14, Windows 10 1809, ...).
Companies really try confusing their users as much as possible, and it seems to work, because the convo mentioned above is just repeating so often at this point that it just has to be intentional confusion.7 -
One of my project managers wanted a feature where the user can save over files without having to delete all information of the previous file and that they could go through previous versions. So I told him, "Okay, what you want is a versioning system." Then he proceeded to say no and describe the exact same thing as a versioning system. I wanted to yell at him that that's exactly what he wanted but kept my mouth shut because there is no point in continuing the conversation.4

Me: I need an SSL certificate.
Support: No problem. Just fire up your command line and generate one via OpenSSL.
Me: I'm on Windows.
Support: Ok, so what you do is code a Linux command line from scratch that will run in Powershell. Next, compile OpenSSL from your favorite of 60,000 versions available. Now, just fire it up and you're all set.
Me: Goodbye everything I've ever enjoyed doing in my free time.16 -
Finally, with iOS 11, now we can sync older conversations with new devices.... Thanks apple, it took 11 fucking versions to do this simple shit!5

I know its 1999... but who called their website a WWWebsite.
This was my school's website in 1999. They didn't stop calling it a wwwebsite until 2002.
on some of the later versions of the site(2000+) they were proud of the "little bit of Java and Shockwave" - (School Website) on their site3 -

Its my morning rant time... Me and my team are working on implementing our solution into 20 year old piece of shit POS system which:
1. Uses old piece of shit computers - which is slower than average calculator.
2. Uses .Net 2.0 - and no higher versions could be installed.
3. Has 20 year old documentation - outdated as fuck.
4. Throws unknown and non explainable COMExceptions.
5. Works slow as fuck.
And we have to deal with all its issues as 3rd side integration.. FUCK... FUCK.. FUCK....9 -

Out of necessity (or rather: lack of support) I've been neglecting my test suite for the past ~month. Now that one of the beta versions of RSpec has better Rails 6 support, I can finally get back to writing tests. Yay!
I just merged staging into my testing branch, and it's now 344 commits ahead of origin! eep.
So, I've got lots of tests to write. yay.random root loves her tests test suite yay! i didn't break anything! rspec root talks in third person in the tags surprise!3 -
Why is it that pretty much zero package & framework maintainers understand semantic versioning?
1. If you do a complete rewrite of your package, but the resulting API is identical, you don't need to bump to the next major version. As a user, I'm thankful for your increased performance or cleaner internal code, but it doesn't really affect my update process.
2. If your package required some-framework 6.0.0, and now ALSO supports some-framework 7.0.0 but is still compatible with 6.0.0, you don't need to bump to the next major version. As a user, I can now upgrade the framework, and know that the package will keep working, but otherwise it doesn't really affect me.
3. Following your versioning along with the framework/language version is super annoying, especially if your library really doesn't need to differentiate between framework versions because it's not actually utilizing new framework functionality.
4. On the other hand, if you stop supporting a certain language, framework or shared library version, or change the public methods, exceptions, fields, etc, you MUST bump to a new major version.
Yet everyone gets this wrong.
For example, many of Laravel's underlying subpackages (for collections, filesystem, database, config, http, mail, etc) do not change their code in a breaking way, or do not even change at all between major framework versions.
Yet they follow along with the major framework version.
Now if someone makes a library "laravel-elasticsearch" which uses the support libraries and collections from laravel, they need to update their package to move along with the versions as well, and often they choose to number their library along with the framework in turn.
This means that to update the framework, you also need to update over 9000 dependencies.
FOR NO FUCKING REASON. THE ONLY CHANGE IN THOSE FUCKING DEPENDENCIES IS TO UPDATE COMPOSER.JSON TO BE COMPATIBLE WITH THE FUCKING FRAMEWORK.
Meanwhile, Laravel itself breaks repeatedly on minor/patch version updates, because breaking changes slip through their review process.
Ugh.3 -
boss: wish there was a way to go back to older versions..
me: there is, it's called git, I can show you how to use it!
boss: nah we will just keep using the sync on Dreamweaver

While messing around with the Windows WM_NCPAINT message, I forced the WindowProc to return without calling DefWindowProc.
This resulted in interesting effects when pressing mouse buttons down on the right hand side of the title bar. This is on Windows 10.
Bottom part of the image is when I clicked on things and is Windows 9x-XP style. Top part of the image is when the window was deactivated and is Vista/Windows 7 style. Once they appear, the buttons behave as they did (visually - e.g. highlighting) as they did on those versions of Windows.
Just found it funny to see older bits of the Windows UI still hanging around behind the scenes!3 -
Bought an ebook that turned out to be a .DRM file
...that only worked with that publisher's Android app
......that only works with Android versions < 6.0 (I use Android 9)
Tried it anyway, which among incompatibility issues, was raising a certificate error. I contacted the publisher about it

Why are you even advertising it on your website as a publisher then??7 -

I cant express how outraged this makes me feel.
Me to my PM months ago (when I started) "we should upgrade the versions of node and angular when I do the tests (because yes, no tests at all)
Boss:"why? No no"
Our version of node 0.10.40 has no support any longer. But hey, I'm leaving that role :-) good luck new guy if new guy comes....3 -
Spent 4 hours debugging a “button” styling, worked fine locally but not on production.!
After striking out “cache” issues, “browser” versions, “fonts”, “sass errors” the error was with a stupid chrome extension that appended a css class attribute to the “HTML” tag 😡
And the other developer thought that was a part of what was written in the code !!
Hate these kinda plugins that manipulate the DOM 😪
P S the plugin is "Grammarly".2 -
So, who's still on jdk 7 or 8?
Man I'm so out of date!
When did they come out of so many versions?

Ok. FUCK MySQL Workbench.
Most of our products built on MySQL and we just had enough of the tools that we are using for our mysql databases...
We decided to make our own tool :)
If it goes well, we plan to open source it. Would you guys be interested in it?
We planned the following features:
1. Schema editing
2. Schema versioning
3. Update/downgrade script generation to move easily between schema versions
4. Manual/auto sync
5. Might include our own replication solution too...
What do you think?10 -

I've learned over the years that there's no such thing as a Proof of Concept app. You might as well call them beta versions since some salesperson or manager will see it and immediately tell clients about it who will buy it and then you have to support and expand it.

Go find the most cancerous Instagram page in the "coding community" and multiply it by 10.
Bonus points if they:
>>post vague and utter bullshit motivational captions with completely irrelevant pictures.
>>Have the word "entrepreneur" in their bio
>>Have emojis in their bio
>>Mention coffee in their bio
Oh and you know the shitty clean versions of songs that filter out anything that is slightly offensive words? (I recently heard a song that filtered the words "balls" and "vagina." Apparently anatomy is offensive to the snowflakes now.) That's gonna happen to our code. We're gonna have shitty censored versions that remove all "offensive" words.5 -

Fuck me. I have to update an Android app I have built 2 years ago. So much have changed, I need to update pretty much every dependency I have and no library seems to compile with the latest Android SDK yet.
I feel like Dr. Strange living the 14,000,605 possibilities when trying different library versions.
It's probably easier to rewrite everything. Now in Kotlin.1 -
Just got an email from the boss asking if me and the other dev on a project have been liaising with each other before editing code because changes were being lost and over written.

The company is so reluctant to use git and do things properly.

Fuck Windows 10. Period.
An amateur shit-show of junk. If you have an i3 processor it will find a way to choke it to 80% with the bloody audiodg.exe.

Learning Angular, starting with a hello world example:
$ ng new wtf
added 1180 packages from 1294 contributors and audited 21849 packages in 18.753s
found 13 vulnerabilities (9 low, 4 high)
Oh, great! Broken from the get-to! But wait, there's more joy!
$ vimdiff wtf/node_modules/is-odd/node_modules/is-number/index.js wtf/node_modules/is-number/index.js
Fresh project, is-odd requires is-number, the project itself requires is-number. And is-number is there twice in two different versions. The notion of a number must have changed drastically in the last couple of years!
Seriously? Angular doesn't even give me the chance to fuck up the dependencies on my own!7 -
Big-time Microsoft fan who claims they've been using licensed versions of Windows since Windows 3.0. Still has all old versions of Windows on different machines / hard-disks. They use only Microsoft Surface devices. They still use Nokia Lumia (with Windows Phone 10). They were working with an organization that used Office365 for enterprise email and collaboration. They used Microsoft Teams for team collaboration when the rest of the organization was comfortable with Atlassian tools like jira, confluence and bitbucket.
One fine day, news spreads that the organization is moving into GSuite for enterprise email and collaboration. They are devastated. They quit citing personal and family reasons, but we knew the real reason.16 -

Who ever come to idea to put JavaScript as backend language is insane.
I am coming from Java and now I am doing some work on Node project and I am loosing my mind.
Everything is an object but you have no idea what are his properties. There are call back, async, sync and mix. I don't even want to try debugging. There is no classes only object and a lot of functions everywhere.
The whole story with Node versions and playing with NVM. Don't even let me talk about Node modules.
Frustration and long development.15 -
Apache Tomcat vulnerability "GHOSTCAT" allows read conduct files and implant web shells. All versions in the last 13 years vulnerable.
According to Security Researcher of Chaitin Tech : Due to a flaw in the Tomcat AJP protocol (the channel for Tomcat to connect to the outside, pass them to the corresponding web application for processing and return the response result of the request), an attacker can read or include any files in the webapp directories of Tomcat.
For example, An attacker can read the web-app configuration files or source code. In addition, if the target web application has a file upload function, the attacker may execute malicious code on the target host by exploiting file inclusion through "GHOSTCAT" vulnerability.
Apache Tomcat has officially released versions 9.0.31, 8.5.51, and 7.0.100 to fix this vulnerability.5 -

Creator of the react router:
If you ever see this, you created one of the greatest library with one of the worst documentation ever.
And don't get me started with versions. In every single versions, you break everything so badly and nothing works anymore.
Everytime I need to do something related to react router, I just fucking roll on the floor and cry. Documentation is fucked up.
It's totally fucked up. In the github there's one documentation, in the website there's a different. At the end, nothing works.
Please, if you want to create a nice library like this, maintain it. If you can't maintain it, mark it as deprecated and someone will take over.
But keeping something like this and making it absolutely inconsistent doesn't help. I am really tired of debugging bugs related to react-router2 -
Few months ago I was working on something rhat wasn't mission critical for the current sprint. Near the end of the month I was asked to help the BD team (which usually do the testing) with testing the webapp as well as the mobile versions. First day of me testing ever, found more bugs by myself than the 5 BD people did in the entire week. Really felt like a boss. Next month they asked me to help again. And again. And again.
This is how my desk looks nowdays (the 3 phones are behind the laptop charging) -
I once accidentally deleted the live versions of my websites instead of the development versions (which I wanted to delete because I was going to start over from the live versions.) After several hours of digging through backup folders, I finally found the latest backup files, which were a few months old.
It took me a few hours to get the backed up versions to the same version they were when they were live. In all this, I have learned to keep the live and development versions of my sites in completely different locations.14 -

Does anyone else find it super-confusing how Microsoft refers to SQL Server versions by both product year and version number?
For instance, we primarily use SQL Server 2012, 2014, and 2017, which are versions 11, 12, and 14 respectively.
The slight mismatch between the product year and the version number creates a lot of ambiguity. If someone refers to SQL Server "14," we always have to double-check: do you mean 14 as in version 14 as in 2017, or 14 as in 2014 as in version 12? Does SQL Server "12" mean 12 as in version 12 as in 2014, or 12 as in 2012 as in version 11? It's ridiculous!3 -

Just spent 8 hours debugging an issue that had been sitting in my issue queue for a week. WooCommerce was claiming transactions were failing, but going through in the background anyway.
Can’t share any more specifics here, but the gist of it is that the server the code was developed on was set to PHP version 7.1, while the server the dev site was on was set to version 5.6 (which I didn’t even think was still installed, never mind the default...).
So yeah, fun times over a trivial fix.1 -
Having to use Xcode 4 alongside the new 8 to support old iOS versions. I almost wrote the code twice, once in Swift and once in Obj-C.

For the lovers and haters of the elePHPant here is a simple fact
PHP 7.x is a vast improvement over previous versions and 8.0 promises to surpass all expectations.9 -
Very important lesson I learned while working with Xcode:
Always have multiple major versions installed and ready to be used.
Xcode 9 can't convert old Swift 2.2 project to Swift 4 and can't open the "old" project? Xcode 7 can help you.
Xcode 9 crashes randomly while moving top level packages? Xcode 8 can help you.
Yeah, always funny to find new bugs in Xcode...5 -
Why is it so hard to convice coworkers (other programmers) to use source control? Yes it's an extra step every day or so but it can be so helpful and save so much more time tracking down versions and when the bug first appeared. Also, piece of mind if your computer every gets hosed.7

When did the meaning of
"Statically linked", under Linux, change from
This binary includes all libraries it depends on and will run on any device that runs a sufficiently compatible hardware and kernel.
to
This binary will only run on these 3 Ubuntu versions, because it still depends on a fuckton of shared-objects of " default" libraries and this shit-distro is the only one, that comes pre-bloated with all of them.5 -

Windows rant incoming!
For fucks sake! I think Windows have asked me 117 times if I want to update now. The answer is still fucking no!
And I don't care how much of a security improvement it might be, when your shitty update causes a Memory Management error.
So fuck off, stop minimising my game while I play and go fix your shitty update first!
Fuck you Microsoft, fuck your QA team and while I'm at it, I want to say fuck you to all versions of Windows Server as well!7 -

Anyone else ever had to install Jekyll on Windows?
Man, what a displeasure the last four hours were. SSL errors everywhere because Ruby versions have differing SSL certificates for downloading gems or something, having to install the devkit three times, messing with Linux Subsystem and finding out the Ubuntu repos do not have a new enough Ruby version to support what you're doing.
All this to have some fun with GH pages. It's physically exhausting.2 -

We are upgrading to nodejs 8 late, because no one is tracking versions. I had to rage a prove war with everyone that we must upgrade because node 6 is ended lts. This week i have to argue with one of the admins that the build server should be updated also (jenkins). And his problem is that our private jenkins server is not used only by our company, but other companies under our group. In my mind the only question is who decides our or other company project is important to build nor6maly. And why we should care ..

I don’t understand how Microsoft can continue to ship functionality in modern versions of SharePoint that only work on IE11 (open in Explorer, open in InfoPath, Skype presence integration). The only reason my company has to make web apps compatible with that browser is because of the hot garbage that is IE11. Just kill the functionality and kill the browser. Please.
Yes I know *why* they only work in IE11, it’s because activex is a massive security hole, but just kill the functionality if you can’t recreate it in modern browsers.1 -

I've been using Git since 2014. So why do I STILL cringe whenever I have to revert commits or do a hard reset back to HEAD? What's going to disappear? What will remain? Will my entire Git history be vaporized? It's a total game of Russian Roulette to me. So, without the certainty level I want, I just do what feels safer...I grab the versions of the files I think are what I need and stick them back into my repo, then git status and commit the correct changes back in.2

So everyone here has probably seen many posts ranting (or should that be rants posting) about windows updates in the lastest version of Windows. I have seen one too many rants about losing work due to this well it happened to me to. ..almost.
Since I have an editor that saves work automatically I didn't lose anything but just had to restart by applications and set my windows how they were again. It wasn't planned and I had previously manually disabled windows updates but they still ran and rebooted my machine...grrrrr!
Doing some more research I found my previous fix which worked in Windows 10 1511, and 1607 versions (anniversary update and prior) doesn't work in version 1703 or 1709 the Creator's and Fall Creator's updates respectively.
If you have version 1511 or 1607 you can just disable the windows update service and windows store service and appxpackage services to completely stop windows updates and unexpected reboots. I ran it like that for over a year from 2015 well into 2017. After being impressed with the newer Fall Creator's update I decided to manually update to 1703 and then to 1709 which is the latest version.
The problem is, the old disable service fix isn't enough now in these newer versions. To disable updates in the newer versions you have to stop the usoclient which is the update orchestrator. Simply disabling the services doesn't work anymore.
Changing the file permissions of the usoclient will work and stop the scheduled tasks from firing.
Here ya go, no more unscheduled reboots. YOU pick when you want Windows to update:

I don't understand why we have so many apps on the smartphones. I mean, we don't use "apps" for the desktop. We just use the browser and visit the webpage. Why can' t we do the same on smartphones? They do have mobile versions...

I recently decided that I was going to broaden my palette and learn a bit of Java. I've had painful experiences in the past, but it's been a few major versions since I last did anything in it. I have 2 laptops. I use 1 for coding and 1 for gaming.
For some reason, the coding laptop keeps giving BSOD once in a while, but the other one never gave BSOD.

Im gonna get a new laptop soon and on my old laptop I want to install linux (cant do that on my main laptop because Im a windows dev at the moment).
I am not new to linux and have used 3 major ubuntu versions and it was all trouble, autoremoving files after update etc.
So I am planning to go Manjaro but which desktop environment shall I use? I've heard great things about i3 and Cinnamon. Gnome is not something I liked in Ubuntu.
Which desktop environment do you use, why and how did you make the choice?7 -

Now i think Microsoft just want to use the win 10 users as testers.
After getting anniversary update windows started showing application not responding message for the FUCKING WINDOWS itself .
like if The OS itself is not responding shouldn't it just show BSOD rather than freezing?
Combined with the fact that it is almost impossible to go into recovery mode without the shift+restart , it just wasted a WHOLE DAY .
And my laptop(lenovo Z50-70) has pretty common hardware.

Calling any Python programmer here (especially package maintainers)
I run Gentoo, so am responsible for maintaining the dependency tree (to a degree). When it comes to Python I have 2.7, 3.4, 3.5, 3.6 available. I'm always running into some package needing one version or another, and I can't just set a single version and forget it (which is fine. I'm running Gentoo).
I know that this is because python changes rapidly and so different libraries need different versions. Fine.
Why does this happen with Python and not C++, JavaScript, php, ruby, or any other languages on my system? I don't have 3 different versions installed to cover any other languages, and I don't spend time adding installation rules to cover them.
Why does Python need to be a pain in the ass about it?3 -

Is it just me, or is it the worst possible time to jump into coding for Apple products?

I just got a call from Satya. He informed me that Microsoft has successfully acquired the Linux kernel and all future development will be closed sourced.
Here's a sneak peek of the official announcement:
There will be a newer version released tomorrow that will include the Windows desktop environment as well as patch a critical 0-day security flaw that was recently discovered in all versions of Linux.
To prevent exploitation, we will activate a kill switch which will disable all systems running any flavor of Linux next week.
Thus we advise you upgrade ASAP, existing users can get the latest version online for $500.8 -
I wanted to learn a new language.
Started looking through jvm languages first because thats where i feel home, but they are all just subpar versions of java.
Then i started looking at script languages but anything they do, i can just do with java (i know js too, dont recommend that)
Out of the other languages, c# is the only thing that can give me something extra through unity, but hell, i can just use jMonkey.
So my questions is, can you give me languages that are both useful and unique? Also, opinions on Rust please.8 -

Update the method books and lectures, first and foremost. Nothing better than studying outdated versions of languages just because university's technical base can't accommodate anything newer.

That's pretty awesome -_- angular decides to simply discontinue older (half a year) versions of their cli tool by overwriting the older releases with an update notice. Causing my project (jsRant) to break until I update to the newest version.
This new version requires a different configuration so I have to update my entire project just to be able to deploy to production again....

I'm developing an app based on user stories and stuff. The business team used Trello to share them with the devs. Everytime they changed a comma, they'd upload a new file. We got to the point where a simple 1 page story had like 15 versions..
So a couple of days ago I suggested my project's PO she could use Confluence for that, I explained her the benefits like how it'd be easier to track changes and the best part: no 30 effing word files.
I checked it today and turns out she started using, but instead of writing stories on pages, she just downloaded everything from Trello and uploaded the documents there 🤦♂️🤦♂️🤦♂️🤦♂️🤦♂️🤦♂️🤦♂️🤦♂️🤦♂️1 -
Unpopular opinion:
I often hear that an advantage of PWAs is that porting them to desktop / mobile requires little or none effort. IMO desktop and mobile apps fundamentally differ in the way we use them, so that building 2 versions of an application often seems easier to me.10 -

I hope there's a special kind of hell for project leaders / execs that make the decision to take down the documentation for older versions of a software.
I know we should have upgraded a long time ago, but come on. I have no clue what's going on now, and not much to go on either! All the documentation links in the configurations just redirect to the project's github repo, and I sure as hell am not going to read the whole source code just to find the possible logic behind the issue!
Ugh... Days like this frustrate me so much...2 -

So how does dead code from 2007 still exist in this codebase, better yet why were there three of the exact same page literally no differences lmfao. So, myself an a friend are working on a project together. I leave for a weekend trip, I come back and find out the changelog is out of date like... six versions. I’m the type of person that likes to keep things like this. I had to manually go to the commit history and check when the package.json version was bumbed.
Yesterday, he updated it twice and pushed the versions to server, without updating the changelog. Turns out we accidentally skipped a version and decided to combine the two.
Now I have to find the dates each version was published since I like to do that too. Great fun. -
WTF, Rust. You are so fucking hard to write, and TBH, your docs are not understandable. Please writte your docs to be understandable, and make it fun to read, like golang does.
WTF, Rust. I am now looking, for 5 hours straight, for a solution for reading stdin into a variable. Nothing. 6 fucking solutions for 6 different rust versions of which not one works. Just this tiny website, that's a complete database of all cars ever created, of course with every variant and different versions through the years.
Supposed to be searchable, so that a you can compare cars with in a class or by features or something completely different.
And final icing, it should have crawlers, searching used-car-sites, to inform the user of changes is price over time.3 -
So what do you think about the path oracle is going with Java now?
The good side is new versions get usable much earlier. lts versions, open variants and many JDKs customized for any need you might have.
But there is also the darkside with their hey lets support Java 8 for ever, as long as their is someone willing to give us much money.
I mean that could be a reason many old-school company will pay instead of making their shit work with newer versions.
The gap between C# and Java is getting closer from faster releases, towards modern features and many more. Maming it more attractive.
But Oracle is making the thing a bit shitty in my opinion.21 -
My manager asks, in Slack, if we can change the auto-tagger to update the patch instead of the minor version. I respond by saying, "Yes, it's in the Jenkisfile. Really we should switch to just <major.minor> and drop patch."
My manager asks why and I go on to say the last number is useless (unless you ship software externally and need to hotfix or security patch a minor release; internally they serve little purpose).
At my last job we dropped three numbers for two, and most other teams here only use two numbers.
He sends a link to the semantic versioning website.
The next day one of the other developers sends it to me in a private chat as a joke. 😂😅 I'm glad I'm not the only one who thinks our manager shouldn't be a manager. -
Well, I just finished resolving the problems with my Angular dependencies. It has been 3 days of trying to come up with the solution, and in the end, it was all a matter of version mismatch of three dependencies. Now I can (actually) get to work on my project.

Probably the weirdest single command I have ever entered so far:
apt-get install postgresql-12 postgresql-11 postgresql-10 postgresql-9.6
In other words - testing an internal tool across all of our supported postgres versions, but... Just found it funny in a way... Dunno, maybe my humor is just weird.5 -
Started adding new MVC project to main solution at work. Started getting assembly reference errors across the projects during testing. Figured I might as while update the few assemblies that are complaining instead of trying to downgrade to maintain the current state of things. Shouldn't take too long right?....8 hours of staring at configs and running and rerunning nuget commands to get all the versions lined up across 120 projects....thank God we have extensive unit and integration tests...

It's not a big deal but I feel proud, a teen in my neighborhood was asking me to teach him some Android dev, I was like why not.

I have to put it here for support the guy :)

Every time I see posts about api's changing I wonder if none of those companies uses api versions, or simply deprecate functions before removing them...1

UI control packs. They look amazing in the demos, and are so easy to add...
And then they start breaking for no reason. Documentation is outdated. Examples never cover real world uses. There are a million versions, and the one you use is suddenly no longer available for download.
In the end you realize you could either have lived without that one feature you wanted it for, or rolled your own with much less work. -

Android Crash is Fucking Bullshit Ever on this Earth Planet.
I really Hate these Number of Versions and Bullshit Incompatibility between each one.
It is Just a Shit Developed on Java.
The Crash Really Fucks the eyes of Developer.
And Fucking Bullshit Errors are not Even visible, Sometimes the shit goes so worst that it does'nt even give the Line Number where error Exists.
Worst OS Developed for Mobile on This Planet.
Anyone getting into these development i suggest IONIC is Best to start instead of Coding Native Bullshit Android.
If anyone knows how to see the realtime errors besides Logcat and Firebase Error please let me know.11 -
Fello SASS users!
I'm still an avid user of Compass, but since it doesn't support new versions of SASS I know I should move on
One of the main reasons I've stayed with it, is for its configuration file.
So what do you guys use now? Is Node SASS the way?3 -
I wrote a tiny Windows app that switches to High Performance energy profile when plugged into AC and switches to Balanced when on battery. It sits on the tray and you can override settings manually. I made it back when I used Windows 10, but it's also handy on other Windows versions
Is it worth publishing?1 -
When you can't understand a compiler warning, try to reduce the problem to a minimal example, and the warning goes away...
... and you realize two hours later that you weren't compiling the minimal example on the same machine as the original. Different versions of g++, one with a bug fixed 😩

Start coding a project for version 7.x, everything works in tests. Deploy it on the server and it doesn't work. Checks version and turns out it is 6.x, ask my manager why didn't he tell me before, he goes like so what, do it for all versions.
I go wtf -
Eurgh, sometimes there's just *no need* to change stuff between major API versions - such as the AWS secret key being read from aws.secretKey in v1 of the AWS Java SDK, and aws.secretAccessKey in v2.
Just spent way too long to admit wondering why the secret key wasn't being picked up before realising the above. Doesn't help we have multiple projects on differing major versions of the SDK either.6 -

SSIS is very powerful and easy to use, but man is it a ball ache and unnecessarily temperamental. Especially when you have different server versions.
I avoid it whenever possible.2 -
You know you are screwed when you get a webpack error like "Module build failed" Babel cannot find module @babel-plugin-some-nonesense" & gyp module build failed because of fucked C++ node versions, go find the right node for you & you better start the project webpack config and .babelrc from scratch because you ain't getting anywhere with these errors.

If you're using fish-shell, I strongly recommend you to use "fnm" package for installing and managing nodejs various versions!

android, a real nightmare to get something working in all its versions and screens and different vendors devices2

I'm pretty sure we don't need to use brackets and semicolons anymore. Newer versions of gcc bitch when you mess up tabs, which shouldn't matter in C/C++ because of brackets/semicolons, so why require the tabs and newlines?
On the flipside, if we're requiring tabulation and newlines nowadays, why use brackets and semicolons? Just Python it up and you won't have issues where you mess up and add/omit a semicolon/bracket and break EVERYTHING!
"It's so you can write it all on one line"
I have yet to meet anyone that masochistic.6 -
Oh yeah Google why don't you just change the parameter order of functions, remove entire functions between minor versions, and not put a single example on your API docs? And force devs to add 30 lines of boilerplate and start an http server so I can run the debugger? Fuck tensor flow, I'm moving to pytorch.2

How can a LaTex document simply stop compiling after some months? Is this shit not downward compatible with newer versions? This stupid language and all those fucking compilers this is the worst user experience ever. Gonne re-type the thing in Word now5

This is the most f*cking frustrating moment in my life. I am trying to install node-sqlite3, but I am constantly failing to install OR use the thing. The problem is, it is only compatible with node versions 4.x to 7.x. I tried my hardest to make it work with node 8 and higher, but failed miserably. If anyone has suggestions, write in the comments.2

FFS people. If you're going to ditch the Mac App Store (because Apple sucks, I'm such programmer I need to hate it) when releasing your software, get your installers right. ESPECIALLY if it's paid software.
Some people choose not to work on their systems with an admin user all the time. So don't assume your shitty installers will have sudo privileges.
I'm looking at you Atom and Paw. -
C++ is the building blocks for many high-level programming languages, and since 1984 its first appearance in the markets the C++ core committee developers have introduced its 4 new versions which are C++03 (ISO/IEC 14882:2003 second edition), C++11 (third edition), C++14 (fourth edition) and C++17 is the fifth edition. With each new version, developers introduced new features, libraries and APIs in it.
C++ introduced as the extension of C programming language which made C++ as a compiled programming language, which means the developer required a C++ compiler to translate the C++ code to its equivalent machine or byte language, so the Operating system of the computer can execute the program.
There are various C++ compilers in the market and most of them are open source and free to use, however conventionally when we say C++ compiler, we basically talk about GCC which stands for GNU Compiler Collection.
What is GCC?
GCC stands for GNU Compiler Collection, and it is a collection of programming compilers which induce C, C++, Objective-C, Fortran, and some versions of Java. The first version of GCC introduced in 1987 and it was also known as GNU C compiler which became the standard compiler for C programming language, in that same year GCC also provided Compiler support for the C++ programming language.
Now GCC has various versions and each version give specific support for C++ versions, by now if we look at all the versions of GCC, we have a stable GCC for every version of C++, but there are some exceptions with C++11.
C++11:
C++11 introduced as the 2nd update version of C++, it suffixes 11 because it released in 2011 or because on August 12, 2011, ISO gives official approval to it. Formally C++11 known as C++0X because developers were expecting the new update released in 2010, but with its release in 2011, the core committee developer of C++ changed its name by C++0X to C++11.
C++ 11 replaced the old version of C++03, and it also brings many new features for the C++ developers. The main aim of designing C++11 to stabilize and maintain the backward compatibility of new C++ version with the C+98 and C programming language and that’s become the main reason why core committee developers only introduced new features in the old standard library rather than extending the core language.
GCC does not give Full Support to C++11:
GCC version GCC 4.8.1 purpose the first feature-complete implementation of the C++11 standard, however, the 4.8 and 4.7 does not give the full support for the C++11. The current version of GCC provides the major support for all the standard features of C++11 but if you are using the GCC 4.8 or 4.7 versions then your GCC only provide you with the experimental support for the C++11.
To use the Experimental support of GCC you need to enable it first before you compile or run you C++ 11 version code.
use code std=c++11 or -std=gnu++11 to enable the experimental support for C++11.17 -
when you restart computer, unplug the computer, take some walk, turn off light to whole city, kill some random people and after that xcode finally builds your project 😎

Can you imagine npm would manage autonomous robots?
and also some horrible mistake would need fix, otherwise somebody would be harmed.
for that you push the update, you did npm outdated 3 days ago, everything looked fine.
Npm outdated today would want you to update by 10 versions. I don't know if I'm alone, but seems weird to me that 10 versions jump has happened ... :D we know npm..
and even weirder is the output of npm outdated compared to what package.json diff: express-status-monitor current version1.1.0 latest 1.1.2 -
The 11th commandment. Don't make websites where you have to email or call to stop a monthly subscription. It should be easy to do. This is one reason people hate trial versions that ask for cc numbers.2

Oh how I yearn for Yarn in C++.
Like, seriously. Why, to use a library, do I need to spend 30 minutes building and moving and linking and editing and screaming and beginning all over again? I've searched for this a few times now but can't really find a good solution for my "problem".
I want to update multiple Debian servers / machines at ones or from one machine.
Puppet doesn't seem to support newer versions of Debian and I don't really want to force the updates via cron.
Are there any other ways to do it?1 -

What is everyones opinions on declaring class constructors as 'final'?
Could use some feedback experience, pros/cons?
I'm building a hobby MVC-like framework inspired by OpenCart, where the default controller method is "index" rather then "__construct"
Keep in mind i'm only writing code towards the latest supported PHP versions, so PHP4 style constructors are not of concern. -
Amazon is screwing with me.... So I was writing that Prime Recently Added Videos scraper but it's turning out that the Search results pages' layout changes each time. Like they're running multiple versions of the search engine that return the page in different layouts...
So after figuring out one of them... The whole thing breaks since I need to parse a different html layout...2 -
If anyone complains one more time about "windows is built upon a DLL-Hell", i will challenge this specific anyone to implement react into an existing PHP-Project.
Installing matching package versions via npm is the real struggle.

Question, how many beta testers do you need as a minimum, if you want to do statistical analysis, such as:
2 versions of a product, with 50% of beta testers given one version, and the rest the other.
So you can compare and see which is used the most / least hours / etc.5 -

Ok so I'm parts UI/UX designer in a corporate setting so I use graphic editing software like Photoshop rather extensively.
Obviously, I'm confronted to a lot of admin rights restrictions, which is to be expected.
What I'd like to know is why the f*** does ADDING A FONT in W10 require admin rights ?
What's potential security loophole could one exploit using TrueType font installation exactly ? Or are they afraid someone's going to remove all system fonts from the Fonts folder ? Anybody that does that shouldn't be allowed access a computer afterwards.3 -
Been using a *nix since about 2004, but becoming very weary of the OS wars. Man it's all the same shit: if you got to dig through the mud of undocumented Exchange API whose support will then be dropped or if you have to support eight different Samba VFS versions with all their gratuitous name changes.
It's all a fucking mess! But someone's got to roll up one's sleeves and get that shit to work.
And then there will always be the next guy cursing your name, because you got it to work and now he has to add some feature to this abomination. -
Sorry, technical question but my SSD is running out of space...
Not sure why the old versions are still here... they're taking up a few GBs... Can I just delete them? They're not in Add/Remove7 -
Fuck ipmi. Seriously, such a crappy experience. And fuck supermicro for offering almost no tools to work with said ipmi.

FUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUCCCCCCCKKKKKKKKKKK LOOPBACK. Fuck it right in the dickhole. Fuck IBM for paying the salary on this piece of shit. Fuck all of the copy pasting I have to do, fuck the fact that it never knows what fields my type will or will not have, fuck the 4 different versions of the docs they have for each version of this dumpster fire of a framework. This is the dumbest codebase I have ever worked with, and I hate every minute of it. One last fuck, it is for the guys who came before me and chose this for our companies server. Fuck you!2

At work we are currently planing to migrate our source code to the latest compiler version. But I don’t think that we will migrate everything from the old version to the new version this time. Then we have to use three different compiler versions at the same time, with three different IDE versions. And how many VMs are you using at work?

I'd like to make a simple-ish game with OpenGL, but I'm not sure if I should use the older (fixed function pipeline) versions or the newer (programmable pipeline thingy, with shaders and stuff) ones. Thoughts?3

Working with different versions of node on the same machine is annoying. I always forget to switch back to the right one before working on a project. 😡

Finite State Machines are awesome! Resume from reboots and automation is possible even on older Powershell versions without Workflow support. Setting state and transitions resuming where it left off is huge for getting PC's set up. Unfortunately can reimage due to no vl reimaging rights but scripting is totally possible...and with it creating it's own scheduled task to run on startup it does what it needs, then reboots resumes and deletes the task when done.1

Hello family,
what do you think about publishing unfinished apps? I dont mean beta versions, but apps where you could implement more features bit by bit. So the main app is fully functional, but you could implement more and more..
So what's your opinion?

One of our testers got the brilliant idea of switching the desktop environment to KDE on some debian. Response of our Qt-application: crash! - "Cannot mix incompatible Qt library"
Yeah. And we only want to support five distros in at least three different versions. -
Finally wrangled Cordova into submission. Apparently some of the android 7.x versions are not compatible with the whitelist plugin.

I finally reached a point in configuring my desktop where there is only one thing left to fix, the window control buttons.
Even though I don't think they look ugly, they make everything look a bit macOS-esque.
Can anyone recommend some or has an idea for a design?
Edit: more full scale versions of the images are in the comments.5 -
question {
Is it me, or ReactNative just doesn't like working on Windows?
};
I've tried to get it working a couple of years ago (rn with redux and flux), but without success.
disclaimer: This was before expo (the client) was a thing, and also reactnative itself was really young. Has anyone tried it recently? Any opinions?
Since then I've moved to MacOS, and it worked perfectly (same versions) => not an apple fanboy, so I would like to go back to windows2 -
TIL that Debian package names are not allowed to have underscores in their names. Toast my tomatoes. As if file name conventions, like discouraging colons, would not be enough, you just added another useless bit of entropy to all the clusterfuck information just because you established a naming scheme yourself where you delimited the versions and date with an underscore from the package name.2

I've always managed the different versions of python manually on my machine, and set up virtual environments off of them.
Now I've found pyenv, it's so simple now.

Anyone out there care to share a resource that they like for web app layout? Things I'm finding are more UX or just app clone versions.
I guess I'm looking for a book on standard layouts used.

I just fixed some weird bug in legacy code which was caused by UI that contained text input fields embedded inside of text input fields.
How can anyone even think of this as a good idea?!
Needless to say, the UI was just broken. Maybe not a few iOS versions earlier. But definitely on the current iOS.2 -
I just thought of an elegant solution to a problem in prod. Basically need to run 2 different versions of a app.
Just deploy it to uat and point it to prod db for the data.
I guess if we were following microservices architecture though we could deploy both versions to prod but we don't....3 -

After few weeks I got back to an Electron app. Rebuilt the thing, copied fresh binaries to a Win 10 VM, and the app doesn't even start, it instantly crashes. Literally nothing changed - libraries (and their versions) are same, source code is the same, node version is same, it was built on same machine, VM wasn't even started since then.
Tried a fresh Tux binary, and of course it runs fine.
God, I hate Windows. 😩2 -

I was looking at 2019 stateofjs survey. I'm really surprised with all this hate towards Angular. I've been using Angular for past 3 years now, and apart from the mess with versions, I think it's the most complete and beautiful framework out there. I get that not all the people like Angular that much as me but 38% satisfaction (compared to 78% for preact and 88% for svelte for example) in my opinion is craziness.

Ever since the Windows 10 anniversary update. Whenever I resume a video after pausing for a couple minutes on VLC the audio is super loud and distorted. I've been troubleshooting this for a long time and tried multiple driver versions and what not. Anybody else facing the same issue?2 -
When you write an extra markup just for mobile and after wasting hours you realise that you need to use the same ID on the elements of both versions on the same page thus ending up wasting all the effort.
I swear I felt like washing my brains with soap. Fuckity fuck ! -
In my initial days as a web developer, i was assigned a task, to implement a cart share functionality in an e commerce company.
I made the functionality and tested on my system.
Result: working good.
Pushed it to beta testing environment.
Resilt: working good.
Pushed to pre production environment.
Result: working good.
Pushed to live site.
Result: 😀 Error in live site..
So a call comes to me from my team lead..
Asks what was the issue...
Me: i dont know either.
....
After 3-4 hrs:
I found the reason.
My system, beta test env, pre prod env are all having latest php version (5.6 i guess)
But the live server had old version of php.
Me: laughed like anything.
I didn't know that these things would matter in such a great level.
Moral of the story:

I upgraded from VS 2017 to VS 2019 and I am quite impressed with the UI it is so less cramped and clustered than the older versions. Overall just has been a better experience minus some questionable build&compile&run times. But I am glad I upgraded now4

This is silly. Something made with Word 2010 got fucked up and I can't fix it in there. Shoved the file over to the laptop with Word 2016, fixed it there, saved with compatibility on for older versions of Word, and shoved it back. Word 2010 opens it fine and it won't get fucked up (for) now. (And file size got reduced with almost 200kb?!)
I think our company really needs to upgrade our office suite.. :P -
Do only developers have to do such tasks like Cinderella sorting out the lentils from the ashes?
Poor co-workers
* who had to program against the undocumented closed, ever changing API from Exchange Server, supporting over a decade old versions
* who had to compile a c++11 compatible clang or gcc on some sick old OS and almost got it working with compiling a fresher gcc with one that got stuck in one of the build stages. -
I'm in the process of updating all of our npm packages for our frontend codebase, which has been locked at years old versions because of some updates requiring major changes in the code.
Some of these packages revolve around redux and react-redux. After updating to the latest versions, some deeply nested components can no longer identify the context being passed down from the main component, which is wrapped in a <Provider store={store}>.
I feel like I've tried everything in my toolbelt by now, and I'm kind of at my wit's end.
TL;DR - After package updates, deep nested components no longer recognise passed down context from main component wrapped in provider.
Does anybody have any insight on this sort of problem?
