I've tried to joke about it, but you won't pick up the hint. I've told you about the smell, but you think it is a joke. It's not. It. Is. Not. A. Joke.
STOP MICROWAVING FISH IN THE OFFICE YOU FUCKING SOCIOPATH!11 -
To the Windows 10 users of the unofficial devRant client.
I will release soon the v1.4, but I'm already thinking about the future of this project.
What do you think about this concept?
Let me know if you like/hate it.
Any suggestion will be considered.
Thanks!59 -
So what does everyone think about unit tests, do you do it?
My own experience is I've seen people on my current team disable failing tests...12 -
So, I saw this on Reddit, and I thought about sharing it here...
What do you think? It's somewhat accurate, or it can have some changes?
(The Chaotic Good made me chuckle 😂)23 -
When you start a project...
What you should think about :
- What does it do?
- How should I make it?
- What should I need?
What EVERY SINGLE OF YOU think about :
- What should I call it?
- Do I need a logo?
- Lemme sketch some design features. Maybe Material Design looks nice.
(lol)7 -
That fealling when your in a social dinner with friends (non programmers or techies) and everyone has great histories about work situations... and then you try to tell your history... and then you think about it.. and then you give up because no one will be so excited about some major bug you solved8
-
When given a task, don't start working immediately. Think about it first.
If it is taking too long, don't just persevere, stop and think why.
You are paid to think, not type.13 -
What do you all think about that. Is it good or nah? After few months of coding tried to do some UI design.7

I live in an apartment building that has about 20 floors. About once every month, I'm either waiting for the elevator or in it, and the floor indicator display flashes "14" very quickly no matter what floor the elevator is actually on. Whenever this occurs, it's always 14 that gets shown.
This has made me think about what this bug looks like and if it will ever be fixed. Will they ever update the firmware in the elevators? Is it a software issue? It could also be a hardware problem. Either way, every time it happens I think about it and if this bug will ever be fixed.
I've decided to call it the "phantom floor 14 bug."9 -
The worst feeling is writing so many lines of code knowing you could do it in a more concise way if you just had time to think about it but you don't.1

Someone just gave this cloths to my son, and I think only me as developer that very happy about it.

So IT just blocked all web browsers at work apart from internet explorer.....
I have been using it for 2 hours and I think I'm about ready to end it all....17 -

Something that has probably stuck with me the most and has changed how I think about things:
"If you can't think of at least 3 different ways to approach an issue, you do not fully understand it yet."11 -
Gaming anytime!
The reason I become intrested in computers was gaming.
Given I started out as a game dev, playing games helps me think more about it and imporve my skills.
Also sometimes it reduces my productivity :P3 -
A: Can you tell me your opinion about this? Please, be honest.
Me: Ok, I think you could do it in a different way, but let's talk about what you did and see how to make it better...
A: I don't think so, I think this is the best way to do it.
Me: Oh, OK.
A: Why are you always complaining about my job?
Me: Well, you just asked me, and I work on this too, so I thought...
A: I don't think you're collaborative enough with me!
Me [walking away]: Oh, OK...6 -
I just had to download Firefox to be able to download chrome because Edge kept crashing. Think about that for a second.
It kept crashing on a BING SEARCH...9 -
Trying to get feedback after developing website.
Friends: what does Lorem Ipsum mean, I think you have a typo.
Me: don't worry about the text. It will be changed. What do you think of the layout, the colors, is it user friendly?
Friends: okey, but the images. They should not be grey with numbers inside. Try using real photos of nature or something.
Me: don't worry about the content. the text and images are just placeholders. What do you think of the website?
Friends: it's nice.
Every freaking time!7 -
Online ads....
I think the problem is that in the age of "AI" and "machine learning" etc etc - the reality is that targeted or personalised advertising is absolutely shite.
All I see when I browse around are ads for things that I bought. It's like - I FUCKING BOUGHT THIS WHY ARE YOU TRYING TO SELL IT TO ME??!
I think anyone worried about the machine uprising enslaving humanity can relax and not worry about it, at least until amazon can understand when it has sold you something or you just looked at something.6 -
*Working on a personal project*

If you think about it, modern webpages and anal sex are pretty much the same.
Sure, you can do it, but it wasnt designed for that and you will probably end up with a shitfest.7 -

If archaeologists from 1000 years in the future find a fossilized copy of your code? What would they think about it?
Regex would definitely classify as alien manufacture.15 -
Just found out out what people google about programmers...
the last one made my day. I think it was this feeling called "funny" hahajoke/meme google society made my day programmers what is 'feeling' we have no feelings *grr want brains!!* scared af is my boss using google3 -
I wonder if I'm getting tired of making websites for people. I just "fired" two longtime clients today without really caring all that much. Not for no reason. They just were asking too much for too little. And I was getting bored of them. When I think about what I want to do in my spare time, the first thing I think about is creative writing. The last thing I think about is code and website design. It didn't used to be this way.3
-
That's so true.. when those who will actually perform the work are excluded from the estimating process !
What do you think about it?3 -
Coding has changed the way I think. Everywhere I go, I think of algorithms and efficiency.
When I'm in elevator, I think about what algorithm is running in the background.
When I'm at red light, I think about the algorithm that traffic lights are running.
I notice bugs in websites and apps and try to figure out what the dev might have done.
I find problems in UI design and get annoyed.
I spend more time coding a solution to a problem rather than directly solving the problem. I get a kick out of it.
When I see something uses more resources than necessary, it seriously pisses me off.
Coding has taught me to think and has positively changed the way I live.2 -
Think about it:
It wouldn't be a real "bug" if it needed a 200 line fix. These little insects are so tiny they can easily hide even behind a misplaced apostrophe.
(In response to people getting upset about 1 line being enough to fix a 3 day problem)2 -
Why is skids trying so hard when it comes to talking shit about Windows? Do they think that is it the only way to get accepted into the GNU/Linux community?
Personally, I think people who does that look stupid and dumb.7 -
At a point in your life, you'll settle down abit, and you start to think about what you've done in the past (idk) years of your life.
Then you think about your career, how everything is ever since you discovered you were good at a certain thing since highschool.
be it programing, writing random codes, pentesting (or if you had that "hacker" phase in your life) or fixing laptops and etc.
"Good"
You think about the word, and you had a thought: You only know how to do it, how it works, how its done, and how to do it.
You only "Know", it takes practice, patience, dedication and years (or months depends on you) of experience before you can really say for sure you're "Good" at it.
Me? Im no where near good. but that doesn't stop me from going there.
And i hope the same goes for you. You can do it,
Have a great day.3 -
I saw this on the first page of a book that discusses techniques for writing clean code... The more I think about it, the more accurate it tests.

I think it says a lot about IT that there's a nice polite (enter) key but the (exit) key is named (escape).

Man I wish we could have here some kind of poll - you know to ask a question and see what people think.
It will be kinda awesome

I had an interview where I had to demo rendering a video on my component. I had copilot on, so it suggested this url. The video didn't load, but the video component was rendered so it was enough.
Later, I got curious about what it suggested, and I thought about it, but didn't think it would be that.
So, I clicked on it and got rickrolled lol.3 -
I had to think as I've been asked quite a few dumb questions but my favorite was a friend who asked about cloud storage and how they got it up there as he is pointing to the sky. It made me think of this commercial.2

Dear new devs/me five years ago:
Practice the 30 second rule-- Whatever brilliant thing that your about to say, just think on it for minimum of 30 seconds. Is it still a brilliant idea? Then share. Else trash it 😉 -
Didn't got the job after a month and 4 rounds of interviews. They then asked me to fill out a survey about my experience. What do you think about my experience you fucks? It was amazing wastkng my time with you...2

I finally got to updating my old laptop when I saw a post about Ubuntu 18.04 being released. What do you guys think of it?8

I just think about Microsoft and Apple and how fucked up their shit is and it makes me feel better.1

[Idea]
What do you think about replacing "user123 +1'd your rant" with "user123 incremented your rant".
Seems to me that it would fit well with the whole programming atmosphere.7 -
"Coding is free dude, why are you charging me for that when I can just use Google to copy-paste code from there and there, boy.. think about it"

What do you guys think about the GDPR regulating the minimum age for using WhatsApp, Snapchat, etc to 16?
Do you think it works?

1.5 million lines of undocumented spaghetti code. Think 500~1000 lines functions, 5k+ lines classes, string html concatenation. You name it, it had it. And complete unwillingness to improve it by the company. I eventually quit after considering doing it about 2, 3 times.4
-
TL;DR:
What do you think about visual scripting.
Pretty much anyone here knows Scratch. And most devs make fun of it (while most also know it's a real programming environment), yet what do you guys think about BLUEPRINTS or Visual Scripting?
Starting to learn Unreal, I have two choices. C++ or Blueprints. While some argue that Blueprints can't achieve and replace C++ in Unreal, I saw others ignoring the fact and making awesome stuff you didn't think was possible. I saw how powerful even this node-based programming environment is and started learning it. What do you think?
(Image from Masterclass, not by me)7 -
If I ever start my own company, I'll build it on the basis of people not giving a single fuck about what others might think about them, especially management.
There will be no place for butthurt special snowflakes and predictable egoFucks! (credit to @MrJDev for that one)13 -
- have a cool idea
- the idea is way too ambitious
- think about it for a few days
- start coding
- lose interest and never touch it again after 4 days
Every time.4 -
Part of me loves devRant for it's diverse community of awesome people doing varied and interesting projects. And their ability to support and learn from each other, or at least agree to disagree.
Another part of me wants to host an API with an isTwat call that allows you to find out if someone's a twat or not, with links to their offending comments and rants. Along with a website for easy Twact™ checking.3 -
I'm 30 years old, sometimes I feel old to study computer/web programming.
What do you think? If it's not true, what can I do to change the way I think about it?28 -
Every time the support suggest that I update and then restart my computer, I can't help it but think:

Employee: ~details 5 good reasons not to implement it~
Boss: Nah, I don't think so, do it anyway.3 -
My parents think I'm teaching computers to think strategic to rule the world some day. They are a bit scared. They love me though. But they are scared.

Tips for a good rant:
- Don't think about it, just lets the words flow.
How to write a good rant:
- start coding -
If you think about it, devRant was also at a stage once when you'd describe it as "it is like facebook but for..." app. Hmm.4
-
So our HoD just sent us this image for doing some courses
And after seeing that superscript ++ I am not even gonna think about it1 -
Just wrote a rant/story about my school day, seriously spend 10 - 15 min writing it and I was just about to post it, but boom - "Unfortunately devRant has stopped"
Sometimes with good custom ROM comes unstable updates.
P.S. if you think devRant would have saved my rant, don't worry I thought that too but when I checked it, it was empty just like my devRant notifs!!2 -

When reading through someone else's code, what about it made you think "Damn this is well written" or similar?
Any language - I have a bias towards PHP, C++ and C though.9 -
A guy I used to work with shit himself. It soaked through his jeans and into his seat before doing something about it. He then carried the seat over another colleagues head and left the office. It was hilarious. Though I don't think it was a prank, I think he had an upset stomach1

Made this app just for the fun of it. Let me know what you guys think about it. And do suggest places for improvement. 😃

What do you guys think about TypeScript? Does it worth time to learn the syntax? Also what is the relation between Angular 2 and TypeScript?4

when you think about it.. Moses was the first guy ever to download data from The Cloud and distribute it via p2p protocol [torrent]. The first it pirate ever.
Happy Easter!2 -
My deepest regret is believing lies about OOP, during my education.
1. It is the best way to model a software, easier to think about objects and relationships: no it is not.
2. It increases reusability: I have seen people invwnting base classes to justify.
Are there any lies you regret believing that you believed during your education?12 -
SOLID and KISS principles are necessary when building enterprise apps. Some people don’t think about design and make things complicated when it should be simple. 😒1

When there's something about TOR on TV and you say that you know and use it.
Now my parents think that I do illegal stuff.

I've been using C, C++ and Python for 10+ years and suddenly I moved to a new job where I had to learn and use JavaScript.
I think that it is different, as many say, but it is full of lacks and it's like a pile of hacks to make things work. It's a scripting language used as a programming language. What do you think about it?14 -
I need to rant about life decisions, and choosing a dev career probably too early. Not extremely development related, but it's the life of a developer.
TL;DR: I tried a new thing and that thing is now my thing. The new thing is way more work than my old thing but way more rewarding & exciting. Try new things.
I taught myself to program when I was a kid (11 or 12 years old), and since then I have always been absolutely sure that I wanted to be a games programmer. I took classes in high school and college with that aim, and chose a games programming degree. Everything was so simple, nail the degree, get a job programming something, and take the first games job that I could and go from there.
I have always had random side hobbies that I liked to teach myself, just like programming. And in uni I decided that I wanted to learn another language (natural, not programming) because growing up in England meant that I only learned English and was rarely exposed to anything else. The idea of knowing another fascinated me.
So I dabbled in a few different languages, tried to find a culture that seemed to fit my style and attitude to life and others, and eventually found myself learning Korean. That quickly became something I was doing every single day, and I decided I needed to go to Korea and see what life there could be like.
I found out that my university offered a free summer school program for a couple of weeks, all I had to pay for was the flights. So a few months later I was there and it was literally the best thing I'd done in my life to that point. I'd found two things that made me feel even better than the idea of becoming the games programmer I'd always wanted to be. Travelling and using my other language to communicate with people that I couldn't in English. At that point I was still just a beginner, but even the simple conversations with people who couldn't speak English felt awesome.
So when I returned home, I found that that trip had completely thrown a spanner into my life plan. All I could think about after that was improving my language skills and going back there for as long as possible. Who knows what to do.
I did exactly that. I studied harder than I'd ever studied for anything and left the next year to go and study in Korea, now with intermediate language skills, everyday conversations no longer being a problem at all.
Now I live here, I will be here for the next year and I have to return to England for one year to finish my degree. Then instead of having my simple plan of becoming a developer, I can think of nothing I want to do less than just stay in England doing the same job every day, nothing to do with language. I need to be at least travelling to Korea, and using my language skills in at least some way.
The current WIP plan is to take intensive language classes here (from next week, every single weekday), build awesome dev side projects and contribute to open source stuff. Then try to build a life of freelance translation/interpreting/language teaching and software development (maybe here, maybe Korea).
So the point of this rant is that before, I had a solid plan. Now I am sat in my bed in Korea writing this, thinking about how I have almost no idea how I'm going to build the life that I want. And yet somehow, the uncertainty makes this so much more exciting and fulfilling. There's a lot more worrying, planning and deciding to do. But I think the fact that I completely changed my life goals just through a small decision one day to satisfy a curiosity is a huge life lesson for me. And maybe reading this will help other people decide to just try doing something different for once, and see if your life plan holds up.
If it does, never stop trying new things. If it doesn't (like mine), then you now know that you've found something that you love as much as or even more that your plan before. Something that you might have lived your whole life never finding.
I don't expect many people to read this all, but writing it here has been very cathartic for me, and it's still a rant because now I have so much more work and planning to do. But it's the good kind of work.
Things aren't so simple now, but they're way more worth it.3 -
Damnnn, have u ever found the solution to problem while u were sleeping cause i found the way how to fixed a bug in my dream maybe cause i was thinking about it before i went to sleep but its really weird when i think about it. 😬🤯1

That time when I ranted about wanting to commit suicide but not having enough energy to go and buy a gun.
That day in the evening, I asked my GF: "I think that the whole life is a humongous rationalization on top of biological avoidance of death".
She has an untreatable neurological disease. She told me "I found out it's a consensus among different philosophers. It absolutely is. I just prefer not to think about it".5 -
Dev lesson learned the hard way. Never rm -rf with wildcard arguments... If you think you're being clever it probably means you're about to mess up some shit.3

Debugging in a dream and woke up... Tried to think about it while falling back asleep so I could go back in and finish.1

I'm going to attend a free 4-day course about Flutter at my University starting next week, never really got into mobile dev before but since it's free it may be interesting.

What do you think about HTTP/3, QUIC, WebTransport?

What do you think about swift?
Does it have future?
It went open-source and is very fast and easy.

What do you guys think about Visual Studio Code?
I personally like it, just wondering your opinions.11 -

I like our daily stand-ups, but our team only does it when our scrum master is present, if he takes a day off, no one cares about it
I think it's healthy for scrum teams to have that every day
What do you guys think? Are you also doing scrum? How bug is your team?6 -
Some people are so crazy about Hadoop, that for every problem, they think of solving it using Hadoop. Even when you need to process a 10MB file!!!!2

What do you guys think about DuckDuckGo? Is it trustworthy and are there any differences between the web and app version? Also, should I use a VPN alongside it?11

I’ve tried to think about it and all I can come up with is that I think my biggest insecurities are my procrastination and lack of faith in my abilities to get and keep a job as a dev.

I think somewhere i read a quote from Gary Kasparov on his view on Chess.
He said that after certain point of mastering it, it becomes too much mental pain.
I think the same can be said about programming.
Devs really enjoy it, but sometimes, damn that Null pointer exception.rant programming semicolon ; java log devs errors python arrayoutofindex null pointer exception joke1 -
Curious what you guys think about the creator of Node.js saying that he does not think Node is the best tool for servers and that Go is a much better option.
For me at least, I think it is great that people like him become aware of the shortcommings of the technology they devised, but wonder if it is such a good move to say such things (even tho apparently he is not the head of the Node.js project anymore)
I have always been fascinated by Node and the whole JS ecosystem. I think it did wonders for JS developers and it pushed the whole JS experience to a whole new level, but I am also aware of the shortcommings of it just as I am of the other environments that I use.
So, what do you guys think about his statements? Would you consider investing time in Go as a Node developer? Do you think that it will be possible to do a switch or would you rather stay in and advance the state ot Node development?2 -
I fucking hate SO ! No sense of gratitude at all.. :/ Fucking arrogant fucker's ..One thing I've realised during answering question's in SO..It's like a bitch ! You should bang and throw it,shouldn't think about loving it.10

Oh what's that? You merged trunk into RC the day before the release? Nice one.
Now go roll it back and think about what you've done.1 -
What do you think about having a portfolio website for junior devs? Does it help, does it not? How could I promote mine?13

What do you guys think about mercurial (hg)?
I think it has no place in a world where git exists and I prefer git.
Just wondering what the general sentiment is15 -
Seeing the way people write CSS I understand why they think it's badly designed. It's just that they don't use it properly, they don't think about general structure of the system, they just haphazardly pile up declarations, recklessly abusing cascade.
CSS - with great power comes great responsibility.2 -
White house urges Developers to move away from C/C++
I'm not sure what to think about it yet, but on the surface level, i think that makes sense.

Hey. I would like to do a research on developer burnout analyzing post from developer sites like Stackoverflow or devRant. I think it's getting a more and more common problem in the developer community. What do you think about it? Any ideas about how should i identify the symptoms from only programming related posts?9

Not a rant just a question, can I change my profile name? I like my name and all but I didn't think about anonymity when I created it.7

welcome to devRantRant, where we rant about the types of rants we don't like rather than just ranting about our own lives and experiences
who cares if you dont like a rant? do you REALLY think anyone's gonna care if you rant about not liking it?6 -
1. Think about it.
2. Get super hyped.
3. Tell everyone.
4. Go to step 1.
5. Plan it
6. Execute
7. Profit.3 -
Maybe it's just me, but it seems that bitching about a problem helps me think about the problem in such a way as to help me solve the problem...

I think that the idea of IIFE in JavaScript is a good example of how shitcoding can be built into the core of the language.
How can I make my code clean if the language itself forces me to make such an ugly constructions?
What do you guys think about it?3 -
Its funny when people talk about AI. It just so funny how they think that any thing can be predicted by the machine.1

Thank you for the 20-20-20(6) rule.
I think I read about it here, I don't know if it helps but I do feel better.
I recommend it.13 -
The worst thing about Java is, that it created a generation of coders, that think OOP is the opposite of FP.9

I‘m curious what you guys think about puzzle games with timers.
I personally hate it to be pressured by the timer. And I hate it when the puzzle resets and I need to start from scratch because I ran out of time.
I prefer to take my time and think about the next move rather than rapid fire my moves by intuition and hoping to get lucky.
Yet so many puzzle games have timers. Is this just lazy design? Do you like timers? What do you think about this?12 -
After working with Angular 1 for a while, I had my doubts about learning Angular 2
After playing with Angular 2 for the past couple of days, I think I much prefer it. -

I try not to think about the future.
But can not not do it.
Every thing will come together.
Or apart.
Disorder will increase.
Or everything is a lie. -
Do you care about your workplace/employer?
I feel quite a bit of stress, and a good friend of mine told me I "probably do it to myself" (working too hard and/or caring too much)
From him I heard that I care too much about stuff I don't get payed to do.
(Think management and server related stuff while I'm just a web developer)
So my question is either, do you care about what's going on? Do you think nah fuck it? Where do you draw the line?3 -
What I've learned from working on side projects is that distraction is caused by poor time management and planning skills. Why is this realization so important? Because it applies to every area of your life. Just think about it.

I think it helps to have clear objectives/questions to answer, otherwise we get sidetracked. Tell everyone beforehand what the meeting is about, let them prepare.

At my new job, we use WordPress. So obviously there's shitload of stuff to rant about. But because of those shitload WordPress stuff, I don't have the time to rant about it, and after work , don't wanna think about it.1

You might think that I'd know better and stop caring about the design while prototyping, but I still can't help it work 4 times as long on the layout than the actual logic3

Whatcha thinking about the

Found one for a dirt cheap price (campus discount) and think about buying it.
I'm largely using linux, including somewhat exotic distros like Void,Gentoo, Alpine.2 -
I remember coding a hierarchical website crawling interpreter without using TDD in a library class.

I am thinking about learning Ruby. Some awesome things like Oh-my-Zsh and Homebrew are built using Ruby. Read many posts about it. Some say Ruby is overrated and cannot be scaled.

Here developing a react native app using console.log everywhere cause the debugger won't stop at the right line or skip libraries when stepping.
But I still somewhat like RN 💙 I think it's a fairly ok framework when you get the hang of it.
I was thinking about giving Flutter a try though, and see how easy it is to use. What do you think about this library?2 -

Found this unusual keyboard layout on the internet. Looks like a better version of a standard 80% layout.

Came across a new definition of the word "Implemented" in work today. As far as I can tell, it can be most accurately explained as:
When 1 or more people think about the feature and record a thought about it, without actually delivering anything. -
Customer calls
Talking about some new feature he haven't totally thought about. so i tell him to think about it.
Talking about a bug, but can't reproduce it.
Talking about another enormous new feature but halt it after hearing the initial estimation.
Total time waster = 1.5 hours for every day.
DON'T LET CUSTOMERS WASTE YOUR DEVELOPMENT TIME.
instead of talking - use project tracking software (i.e. JIRA) -
I'm binge watching Person of Interest right now and I would like to know the community feels about it.
I feel that it is still futuristic and we aren't there yet. What do you think?1 -

ok, I think I'm good to go now,
the shitposts are too much,
the devs don't give 2 shits about the apps

Sometimes I feel an overwhelming lack of willpower that prevents me from moving except for my eyes. It passes within a minute and leaves a temporary tiredness. I didn't really think about it until now and I have no idea why, but yesterday it happened while a friend was talking about something they're passionate about and I realised that this is very far from normal. Have you experienced something like this?5 -

And if you say "well it's AWESOME" then start using your clipboard more when using a gui around the terminal or ssh and come back 1 month later.
People say vi is counter intuitive.. what the fuck is emacs then?2 -

Usually an idea comes up in the back of my head... Then i wait. After some time, the idea comes again. Now ill think about it, when i lay in bed, when im in a train, everywhere. Ill think about the technical implementation. How ill present it to someone else. To my boss. To my little brother. I think about the counterarguments, ill simulate discussions in my head, how ill defend it.
And then, one day, while thinking about it, ill start writing it.
Edit: Its like my brain needs enough entropy to do something. Then it works, then it generates entropy again, eg youtube, gaming, working on something else, dreaming etc -
For me the most frustrating thing about working on someone elses project, is when you try something and it just does not work, you dont even know the code to try think about what the problem might be to begin with. What about you guys ?

I am not feeling well and always think that I will never be a good programmer.1 -
Do apis and libraries or any kind of abstraction makes developers less aware about what's going on in the inside. I think it makes freshers ignorant about inside workings.
I think that every one who's trying to learn should start from core stuff only. But that also leads to them getting away from coding coz its too difficult.
What's your view?2 -
so what do you think about the "master is bad and racist" thing?
I am kind of in between finding it cool and just annoying.12 -

I think this would benefit the devRant team too, as I know they like to collect statistics on strange things about the dev community.
Vote if you think this is a good idea.... Wait... 🙃 -
