"Rottensys" a malware which covers devices from: Honor, Huawei, Xiaomi, OPPO, Vivo, Samsung and GIONEE
---
"According to our findings, the RottenSys malware began propagating in September 2016. By March 12, 2018, 4,964,460 devices were infected by RottenSys," researchers said.
"At this moment, the massive malware campaign pushes an adware component to all infected devices that aggressively displays advertisements on the device’s home screen, as pop-up windows or full-screen ads to generate fraudulent ad-revenues."

If you have one of the affected devices, here's how I checked mine:
1. Install ADB (Windows: https://forum.xda-developers.com/sh...)
2. Connect your device in USB-debugging mode
3. execute "adb shell 'pm list packages -f' > output.txt" (On windows navigate to C:\adb and replace "adb" with ".\adb.exe")
4. open the now created output.txt
5. search for any of those:

Today I learnt that my LG Nexus 5X uses a Samsung manufactured DRAM :O
I had no idea that several Google and Apple devices use Samsung manufactured RAM chips!

I've recently red a blog post stating 'Google leaves x Million Android devices vulnerable to a new Exploit'
I don't really sympathize with Google, but it's simply the wrong message... It should be more like FUCK VENDORS, WHO WON'T SUPPLY UPDATES TO DEVICES OLDER THAN 1.5 YEARS
Seriously, it's them who make you stuck on outdated OS versions... Just imagine you could only install Windows Vista on your 2014 Lenovo ThinkPad, because it's considered outdated...
FUCK VENDORS (again, just in case)8 -
So apparently someone discovered an exploit in iOS devices which would make shitloads of devices jailbreakable and it can't be updated due to the chip being read-only.
I'm not an expert on this by far but hereby a source:
https://idownloadblog.com/2019/09/...
Again, I'm not an expert on this but it does seem awesome that a lot of devices (if I read it correctly) are jailbreakable now (when someone developed one with this exploit)!37 -
When you are a mobile developer and your company cant afford more Android devices, so you use your own Android device for testing and then they don't give you wifi access

New project at work involving Google Nest Hubs, supervisor asks me to do the initial setup of one of them to start developing with it using its API.
I start looking throughout the documentation and realise that we need to setup a work google account in order to register the devices, pay a fee and only THEN be able to use Google's API for Smart Devices (damn, you, Google!). Supervisor is somewhat baffled by this, and in my head I'm also surprised by his reaction. I'd assume you'd research your devices before you buy them, right?
Later, he comes into the room I'm in (I'm still allowed to work on location), looks at the freshly setup Nest Hub, saying "wow, this sure is a much smaller screen than I was expecting". I mean, you did research these devices before you bought TWENTY of them. RIGHT?!
On my way to fight with this Google device-registration-API-thing now.

I just blocked some of the top management from connecting to our WLAN because I was testing a verifing feature for said WiFi that kicks all devices not listed in the DB.
It happened while my boss/senior/guidance was trying to show them the advantages of a centrally managed infrastructure.
He covered my ass well and tried to sell it to them as proof of a secure solution, that unknown devices couldn't log in.
I feel like human trash right now, but that's what you get for testing in production.4 -
Amazon: you're logged into 53 devices.
Me: ooooh Kay, since when do I have that many devices. let's sign out of em all and change the password for some piece of mind.
Spongebob: * a few hours past *
Spam email: someone in the US has logged into your account - click here to verify through some random URL that doesn't even contain "Amazon" in it 🥳

Me: Of course, but I'm assuming you want it responsive...
Client: yes, I want it to look exactly like the design on all devices.
Me: but that's not how...
Project manager: of course the site will be fully responsive and look exactly the same on all devices.
Me: but...fine.

Project manager: The site looks horrible on mobile!
Me: it matches the design perfectly...3 -

DONT do production stuff on friday afternoon. This friday evening we had an issue on production and just wanted to do a quick fix. The fix resulted in a ddos attack that we accidentally started on our servers in an IoT project. We contacted all customers' devices and asked them for response at the same time. Funny thing is that the devices are programmed to retry if a request fails until it is successful. We ended up with 4 hours downtime on production, servers were running again at 11pm.4

I'm an embedded devices dev. As part of my job I take off the shelf devices and write libraries so that our JavaScript team can interface with them. If I have to deal with one more custom implementation of a standard protocol I'm going to freak the fuck out. Like fuck there are only 5 or so major communication protocols at the hardware level there is no fucking reason to reinvent some shittier protocol over a well documented, widely used protocol that has been around for 30 years. (Modbus for anyone who cares)2

TIL that Apple has a self-service repair service. They'll ship parts to you, and you can download their official device repair manuals to fix your device yourself.
“Self Service Repair is intended for individuals with the knowledge and experience to repair electronic devices. If you are experienced with the complexities of repairing electronic devices, Self Service Repair provides you with access to genuine Apple parts, tools, and repair manuals to perform your own out-of-warranty repair. Follow these steps to perform a variety of out-of-warranty repairs for iPhone and Mac, such as display replacements.”

I work in Android Dev. I use scrcpy to control devices remotely. I realized some phones have chrome remote desktop on them...I thought, what if... I open my computer screen on the devices while these devices cast their screen to my computer. Hey, I need ideas. Keywords: DIY, IT cabinet, cooling. I hope I'll catch your eye :)
So I'm doing my apartment renovation. Complete renovation, 100% everything is remade. Soviets did a lot wrongs but one thing they did I like - storage compartments below ceiling (like double ceiling.. does it have a name in English? I often see them in garages). So I tore down the old compartment and created a bigger new one. I've moved some of my IT devices up there: router, switch, raspberry, etc. Now... it's okay while it's autumn-winter, it's bearable up there. I'm worried temperatures might get very high during summer.
Compartment is not that big, smth 1m x 2 m x 0.5 m.
Any ideas for cooling? I could set up a vent fan to circulate air but it's hardly a cooling. Also not very effective. A/C is not an option as the compartment is too far away from outter walls. Also A/C might be somewhat overkill :) 5 minutes ago I've remembered I had an in-car portable fridge-like thing that could keep drinks decently cooled during summer. I'm wondering whether it would work? Any ideas where could I get this cooling mechanism (what to even google for? :) )?
Is there anything better in the market? DIY? I'm not willing to spend a fortune for this idea (one more reason A/C is an overkill)2 -

I wonder how this is going to behave on different devices, as you all know when you do low level stuff, each manufacturer has his own way of doing things in their version of the Android OS.
Once i put this lib up on github please use the lib on your devices and tell me if you get any issues :D -

One thing I hate about laptops is touchpads. Another thing I hate about laptops is the point stick and its buttons. Fortunately, these can both be disabled, but Dell's solution for this has some usability issues. What can't be disabled though is the third thing I hate about laptops: The keyboard. Sure, it is made small to give the laptop nifty and portable outer dimensions. Yet, there is like an inch border used for nothing on each side of the keyboard, and if you have to carry along an external keyboard how portable is that?10

I’m just lazy af, so I spend hours to let something else do the actual work.
That’s why grandpa created farming devices, that’s why I use software to my life easier.
It worked once, I liked it, I continued.1 -
SwiftKey made all their keyboard themes free for good! Time for us to get and apply this theme on our devices :D10

Just ordered my first Alienware laptop.
As much as I want to be excited , I know devices and laptops don’t last that long like they used to years ago5 -
Is the past repeating itself? Am I in that situation again where I, as a junior developer, is left to my own devices on a project, with no code reviews, and with features being added/changed as they wish? 😟

No, friends and family, just because I code doesn't mean I'm a software engineer, or "in IT" and no, websites don't resize themselves to fit mobile devices with fekin magic, that's what we do as web devs, we MAKE that magic

I hate touchscreens!
Far too often, nothing at all happens when "pressing" a "button", and when something happens, it's not at all what you wanted, it's like touchscreen devices have a will of their own.
Maybe touchscreens will evolve and actually become useful in the future, with a technique for reading input that works for everybody and not just for the majority, and with tactility, i.e. through 3D morphing of buttons, switches and wheels, controls that you can grab, feel and hold on to.
Till then, I'll dismiss touchscreens as the toys they are, no good for anything serious.5 -
Can't remember the last time I've been so happy about something I've made :D in my smarthome project, state is synchronized between devices with websockets, and everything can be configured via Json files :)

Good-bye typos? Does that mean it can could also read our minds too... that would be useful but scary...

Wanted to use my ps4 controller on my pc to play a game. There's a program called scp toolkit to install appropriate device drivers for those controllers. The program provides a list of available usb devices currently connected, for which to install the drivers. Unfortunately the devices listed by scp have slightly cryptic names, which means you have to find out, which one it is you're looking for. I chose a usb device for installation I was convinced was the controller. Little did I know that the following NullPointer error made my keyboard unusable. 🙃1

@linuxxx
Hey, it seems that you use dotOs, don't you?
Well, is there a full list of supported devices? I am trying to install in S8 or Mi A1, but i dunno if it is actually supported or not, Thanks!14 -

ok, but this is cool. it’s an image that renders differently on apple and non-apple devices. not sure if devRant will process it so it doesn’t work, but this is cool. also a huge vulnerability for apple, but cool.9

I am slowly turning my home into an automated smart home, however. I have found a lot of responding devices (media players, sockets, etc..) but no trigger devices (buttons, sensors) I can work with.
Am I looking in the wrong place or do I really have to build something myself using arduino?
My setup is the following: I have a central server in my home that hosts a bunch of docker services that all server a certain purpose. All smart devices have static ips so that server can address them quickly. So it is capable of controlling many things. However, now I want to trigger certain actions through a hardware button. It seems I cannot find such a device....
Any other hads on here?6 -
I was android dev for two years. Always used real devices. Now I've created android emulator. Looks like it will boot forever. Any advice?6

Why is it so easy to just keeping thinking to yourself, I really want to do this project. Then literally never want to actually touch it, so many great ideas filling up multiple text files strewn between devices. Stupid motivation.

So excited about my project !
It's about securing file transfer within local network.
Clients are android devices and there is a linux system as a server which handles file and public key transfer between clients .

I'm starting to look at how to get devices to send data to an endpoint for storage and analysis. I'm looking at AWS iot stuff like core and green grass but then I'm thinking that a REST API could also do the job. I don't need to connect devices to each other (in first iteration). Dont think I need any edge stuff either. Anybody have any experience with this?3

I'm working on a project which monitors streaming videos from several Rasp Pi devices wirelessly. Should packet loss occur, the bitrate is reduced remotely by the central computer. (Packet loss is inevitable as wireless devices will compete for wireless bandwidth.)
To demonstrate my work I asked for a wireless WI-FI router rather than bringing one in from home. I wish I hadn't bothered... -

My unidirectional type-c cable. Essentially is a Type C to Type A-female adapter with a Type A to Type C cable plugged in, but with the plugs bypassed with a soldered joint.
Useful for devices that have Type C but refuse to implement protocols, just using 5v bus. They only work with Type A to Type C cables. Usually, they’re vapes and other low-cost devices.
I made this cable to charge my heated tobacco device. Now, since I quit smoking, I don’t need it anymore, but I’ll keep it nonetheless because it’s kinda neat.1 -

Just did some really satisfying refactoring. Much happier with my work now. Its a little cli app to poll M-bus devices and write the data to file if the user wants. Can scan the whole range, search for specific devices and VIFE codes, parse an input file for lots of the previous data and one or two other things.

Okay okay.
Zero Touch Provisioning and cisco devices is a joke.
You buy serveral devices for thousands of dollars and want to provision on startup.
And this shitty thing just tells me I that it is not possible to start ZTP on its management port. Oh my god.
And you cant even provide a plain config file. No it muste be a python script that will be executed on the router.
This is hilarious2 -
Today's blocker to solve. Launch game with spec. headset. Notice that once you reach main menu you are unable to navigate. Turns out that this specific headset is treated as a controller on some consoles and generates data on "buttons pressed" when querying OS about controller state... (all other devices that are not controllers can be queried by asking for devices, controllers are supposed to be only for controllers...)
Note from QA: This only occurs on some consoles out of 10 tested systems this happened on 3.

All I want to do is upload an image in 3 sizes (one of them 4k, if available), the correct orientation, on devices >= Android 2.1 (yes, including Samsung crap), without 100m of libraries to an S3 bucket and I need a PHD + an Armada of physical test devices to do so? WTF? -

Websites that use a snow effect in Winter, with many little snowflakes moving on screen, needlessly drain the battery of mobile devices. Since batteries in portable electronics are usually not replaceable as of 2022, it also shortens the overall useful life of mobile devices.
If web designers feel the need to appear creative, which the snowflake effect isn't since it apparently existed since the 2000s, they should at least give users an option to turn it off. And that option should be available without logging in. Perhaps this useless effect should be turned off by default for mobile users.8 -

Little help needed to understand this:
Rogue detector: An AP dedicates itself to detecting rogue devices by correlating
MAC addresses heard on the wired network with those heard over the air. Rogue
devices are those that appear on both networks.
1.How can the same MAC appear in both networks? 2.If it does, why does it mean its a rogue device?4 -

The Use of Recycled Heart Devices
There are many controversial issues in the healthcare, and some of them seem so debatable that it is difficult to chose which side to support. One of such issues is the use of recycled heard devices – implantable cardioverter-defibrillators (ICDs) that were previously used by people who could afford them and changed them to a new model or died. These devices are still in good condition and have some battery life remaining. Scientists like Pavri, Hasan, Ghanbari, Feldman, Rivas, and others suggest that these ICDs can be reused by those patients who cannot pay for them.
The issue has caused many arguments. Federal regulators and ICDs manufacturers in the United States prohibit the practice of such a reuse; however, it is allowed in India, where very few people can afford defibrillators. The use of recycled ICDs can be regarded as inferior treatment to the poor. People who cannot pay for the expensive devices still deserve the healthcare of the highest quality as any wealthy person. For this reason, other means of providing healthcare to poor people should be found as it is unethical to make them feel humiliated or deprived of medical aid guaranteed to them by the Declaration of Human Rights. Harvard medical experts claim: flagship projects must remain free of the taint of the secondhand, in part by making it clear when devices can safely be reused.
These scientists also doubt the safety of ICDs reuse. Despite the fact that all devices are carefully transported and sterilized, there is still a danger of infection transmission. The experts, for instance, claimed that three people died because of stroke, heart failure, and myocardial infarction. Though it is not proved to be caused by recycled ICDs, there is no evidence about the relevance of the reused devices to these deaths. It can be presumed that the failure of the defibrillator did not prevent the problem. In general, their findings prove that the alternative reuse of ICDs is a comparatively riskless life-saving practice.
There is another side of the problem as well. It is obvious that human life is sacred; it is given to one person only once, so it should be protected and preserved by all means (humanlike, of course) possible. If there cannot be another way out found, secondhand ICDs should be applied to patients who cannot pay for their treatment. If the world is not able to supply underprivileged patients with free devices, richer countries can, at least, share what they do not need anymore. One may draw a parallel between recycled defibrillators and secondhand clothes. There is nothing shameful about wearing things that were used by another person. Many organizations supply children in poor countries with garments in a good condition that richer people do not wear anymore. For the same reason, reused defibrillators in a proper state can be implanted to those patients who cannot afford new devices and will not be able to survive without them. Underprivileged patients in some developing countries receive alternative treatment of drug therapy, which, in this case, can be regarded as inferior method. Apparently, if to consider the situation from this viewpoint, recycled heart devices should be used as they allow saving people’s lives.
The use of recycled implantable cardioverter-defibrillators is illegal and risky as they are classified as single-use devices. Moreover, despite the fact that the results of researches on the topic proved to be positive, there were cases when some people with recycled ICDs died because of stroke, heart failure, or myocardial infarction. It is unethical to break the law, but at the same time, person’s life is more important. If there is no other possibility to save a person, this method must be applied.
