So, here's how online payment works in my country:
1. The selling website creates a hidden <form> and populates it with product ID, price and etc.
2. Some Javascript posts the mentioned form to the bank from the browser.
3. User enters credit info, and submits. If all is right, the bank creates another hidden <form>, and populates is with status code and an invoice ID.
4. Said form is then posted back to the selling website.
I don't know how the programmers behind this scenario call themselves programmers if they don't know basic things about server-side only verifications, but thanks to them I've been buying a lot of products for free these past years. 😂😂
How? 1. Just install Requestly, Tampermonkey and enable Chrome's dev tools.
2. Change price to zero, and the bank's response code to success.
3. Profit!

How did I learn programming?
When I joined college I was literally the dumbest in the class... I didn't even know what is a char and what is a String.. Our lecturer made fun of and humiliated me in front of the whole class....also my parents barely afforded my college tutotion fed...
So one night I sat with myself and reevaluated myself and decided that no matter how hard it is gonna be, I must become an excellent programmer....spent restless nights and days learning the core of programming in c++ then switched to Java *best day in my life* and also learned Android development.. And later JavaScript "mostly worked with jQuery and AngularJs*
In my final year project I built an Android web browser that even the lecturer that made fun of me was impressed by..and my app was rated the best project of that batch.
Now I'm working as a Java web dev and made a promise to myself that I'd learn something new every day.8 -
When I was 12 I started programming by makimg games. Then when I was 18 I stopped with a game dev study (because of personal reasons). I went to a web dev study and found work 4 years later. Today my company hired a new sales person who has worked at a few game dev companies and she said she will try to put me on game dev projects.

In Russia we have a huge techno-nazi community. They often can be found on some programming forums and a website called Habr.
They’ll shame you if you’re a web developer and don’t write in Asm or C. They spread toxic memes and insulting “stupid humanitarians”. One particular guy constructed the whole ideology that is focused on technological enthusiasts being the “master race” and implies recycling non-technical people in so-called “bioreactors” for energy.
Please don’t be like them.35 -
It was fucking weird when our teacher in web programming class told to make a PHP page but he forgot to give us root access to Apache server and most importantly more than half of the class didn't know what the fuck a web server was and what is Apache.

The V Language sets the goal to compete with Rust and Go. It's main advantage is appearantly it's efficiency and speed. You can build a basic web server with only 65kb file size.

So, a friend of mine just called me and asked what is it that I do in programming, and if I knew Java, because her stepfather owns a company, and they're currently hiring. Since she's not a tech person, I answered "basically, websites", but the stepfather was asking something else in the background, and she couldn't understand what the heck he was saying, so she put me on the phone with him.
I then explained, I do all kinds of web related stuff, from simple HTML single page sites, to WordPress themes and whatever, so I know PHP, Javascript, and all that crap.
And then, he asks me this wonderful question:
"And programming languages... ?", as in "do you know any?"
... I was like... Wut?...
I mean, I see where he's coming from. He probably meant compiled languages or something, but still... I felt like screaming at him "WEB DEVELOPERS ARE REAL PROGRAMMERS AND DESERVE SOME LOVE TOO YOU KNOW?! 😢"
I decided to go with a "nah, not compiled languages, no..."19 -

One year for Christmas, my dad got me an old tower and installed Windows 98 on it. He also got two old-school PCI WiFi cards so that my "new" computer could access the Internet via his.
I started learning basic web development. I would convince my mom (an English teacher) to buy me books on programming all the time when she was getting her own books at the store.
Eventually, I got a book on Blitz Basic and started making my own video games.
Then GameMaker, Java, C/C++, and more web development and design happened until all the sudden, out of nowhere, I'm a computer scientist 😁
It's crazy how much we owe to our parents. And neither us nor them even realized what they were doing at the time!1 -
I think I ranted about this before but fuck it.
The love/hate relation I have with security in programming is funny. I am working as a cyber security engineer currently but I do loads of programming as well. Security is the most important factor for me while programming and I'd rather ship an application with less features than with more possibly vulnerable features.
But, sometimes I find it rather annoying when I want to write a new application (a web application where 90 percent of the application is the REST API), writing security checks takes up most of the time.
I'm working on a new (quick/fun) application right now and I've been at this for.... 3 hours I think and the first very simple functionality has finally been built, which took like 10 minutes. The rest of the 3 hours has been securing the application! And yes, I'm using a framework (my own) which has already loads of security features built-in but I need more and more specific security with this API.

Just because you can learn HTML in a day doesn’t mean that you don’t need a degree.
Did you know that your browser, HTML, CSS, Javascript, and even your operating system use linked lists, binary trees, hash tables, and other so-called “useless” data structures?
It’s important to understand the roots and fundamentals of computer science even if you won’t use that knowledge day to day.
It changes your perspective on programming once you learn what actually goes on under the hood, and makes you think twice about the impact of what you write.
It’s relatively easy to get a programming job without a degree nowadays, but it often leads to web developers claiming that degrees aren’t important to their web apps.
There is much more than just the web to computer science, and that’s something to always keep in mind.10 -

I have this great professor who taught us how to be logical human beings (not that I learned much of that haha). He introduced us to web dev. He started with the basic html shit, then proceed with php and sql. His lectures were awesome. He'll then proceed with code exercises. And we'll have mini 'codefights' in his classes! yey! He taught us that in programming, it is much more important to practice logic than master a single language(no hate please). I learned to love programming through his passion. :) I learned to program in his class, now I hope never to stop learning. :D8

For the past two years I've always wanted to make Programming tutorial videos to help others learn to code while fueling my passion for coding, discovery, and teaching..... and after two years I've finally uploaded my first two videos to YouTube.
I want to cover fun and exciting topics such as how to make custom plugins, create your own linux web server, and more... but decided to do a web basics 101 as my "Hello World" videos to get better in making content and production.
The inspiration for my "Web 101" comes from have a lot of my senior year CS classmates who have never seen HTML/CSS code before and wanting to provide them a source to get the basics all in one place.
I have a lofty goal of getting 10 subscribers by the end of the month. If you wouldn't mind giving me some pinpointers or comments I'd greatly appreciate it!
Also I did buy a new microphone so the sound quality between video one and two should be better!

I hate doing estimates, but I had to adapt. Since I work remotely and under contract, I'm used to track my time and estimate by hours.
I did a lot of mistakes before, which means I worked for free to wrap up fixed price projects.
Today, the method that is working best for me is:
1) positive estimate
2) most likely estimate
3) worst case estimate
Sum up and divide by 3.
I do this for every task.
Also, for Web projects, I like to divide tasks in categories like: HTML / CSS, UX, programming, testing.4 -

Why do job descriptions for ONE developer position, list down ALL the known programming languages, all the web technologies and frameworks available? From java kotlin swift php js jquery node to ionic angular laravel python and what not. Wtf? And this is not one, this is about 70 percent of the job descriptions I see these days!!5

Im 17 and Im studying IT in Norway. I started learning to program when I was 9 years old (web design) and then later moved onto Object oriented programming. Now in some classes we do web design, I can watch Netflix in programming classes6

It was not until 20 that I had access to regular computing. In school I had to take up Finance as my Maths was weak. I couldn't take Sciences including computers and how could I , my childhood wasn't as fortunate as my peers.
When I entered college I got my brothers old gaming pc as we had a couple of work laptops at home. I was always the inquisitive one. I got interested in web development just because of curiosity while I was on my first job and I hated it. I used to write article and freelanced and ran a website for friends where I learned a lot by trial and error. I single handedly learned mySQL, PHP and basic web development.
The main job was a core night from 11pm -8 am . Drained me and my social life drowned. I lost my brother in an accident. Silver Lining: I quit my job.
I understood I was interested in computers like nothing else. I single handedly learned a programming language. After leaving the job I took up classes to learn from root level in a structured manner: Web design and Development.
Now though I am jobless and I am searching for my second job it is for something I love. :)2 -

When I was around 13 I started programming html and designing websites on and off over the years. Later during my first year of college I picked up C++ and loved it. I always had this idea that web design was very elementary programming until recently.
I recently got forced into learning C# and ASP.NET Core MVC by my internship. Holy shit was I wrong. Web design is so insanely complex and interesting!
C#, ASP.NET Core MVC, HTML, CSS, JS, Entity Framework Core, and the list goes on.....all to create a single website/web application.
I apologize for my ignorance to the website development community.

So yesterday I got paired with this guy in physics class. First thing he does is ranting at my windows, after which he rants at his Mac, and then launches vim and tells me about how he only uses Linux, and how C+ is the only real programming language, and that maybe Python could be accepted as one too. Then he finishes by telling me how web development sucks because it's so high level... Suddenly I lost hope for Sweden...8

Java is an Object Oriented Programming (OOP) language created by James Gosling of Sun Microsystems. JavaScript is a scripting language that was created by the fine people at Netscape and was originally known as LiveScript. JavaScript is a (very) distant cousin of Java in that it is also an OOP language. Many of their programming structures are similar. However, JavaScript contains a much smaller and simpler set of commands than does Java.
Now let's talk about how Java and JavaScript differ. The main difference is that Java can stand on its own while JavaScript must (primarily) be placed inside an HTML document to function. Java is a much larger and more complicated language that creates "standalone" applications. A Java "applet" (so-called because it is a little application) is a fully contained program. JavaScript is text that is fed into a browser that can interpret it and then it is enacted by the browser--although today's web apps are starting to blur the line between traditional desktop applications and those which are created using the traditional web technologies: JavaScript, HTML and CSS.

OK, I have a dilemma and I need some developers helps. I'm going to tell you about myself. I am 19 and have been programming since I was 11. I consider myself a full stack web developer and that is where my passion lies... I love web development. The problem is that I am currently studying comp sci at a top 10 uni and I don't really like it. I kind of enjoy it, however, I am mostly doing it for the degree because my goal is to move to the valley (currently in the UK). I'm not sure whether I should pursue this degree because it's interesting and tbh I might just need time to get used to uni life or should I just go for it in the industry?6 -

When reading a new programming book I always go through the "who this book is for" and if they say it is not for beginners I get nervous even if I bought said book because it is supposed to be on an advanced level.
Don't know if I am being modest or just plain stupid.
I blame starting up with C and C++. Their "advanced" level shit is way different from what you find on your average web development book.

In a universe where JavaScript was never invented, the world of programming might look vastly different. Perhaps another programming language would have taken its place, or multiple languages would have coexisted in a more harmonious ecosystem.
Without the challenges posed by JavaScript, web development may have been smoother and more streamlined. There might have been fewer security vulnerabilities to worry about, and the web could have been a safer place for users.

I dislike the damage web development tools have done to my programming habits.
The rapid feedback provided from the development environment (e.g. hot-reloads) encourages me to constantly bang out code with very little consideration for its side-effects.
This tendency has become a handicap when I write instructions for hardware with much less resources, such as a microcontroller.3 -

One thing I found funny watching Westworld is how they depicted the "programming" - it is more like swiping on a smartphone, a bit maybe like Tom Cruise's investigations in Minority report. Or giving certain commands and key words by voice.
There was one quote from Uncle Bob's "Clean Code" I could never find again, where he said something along the lines, that back in the seventies or eighties they thought they would soon raise programming languages to such a high level they would use natural language interfaces, and look at us now, still the same "if's".
So I feel uncomfortable without my shell and having tried a graphical programming language once this particular (Labview) seemed clumsy to me at best. But maybe there are a lot of web devs here and it seems with them frameworks you might be able to abstract away a lot of the pesky system programming... so do you feel like moving to some new shiny programming experience or do you think it will stay the same for more decades as the computer is that stupid machine where you have to spill it out instruction by instruction anyways?7 -

All this started around an year back. In college we had this subject of web programming where we were given a mini project to do. The topics were given related to college stuff. Mine was an attendance system. Made a simple website using all i knew about bootstrap, jquery, etc since i had some previous experience with web. The professor liked it and asked me to further improve it so that it can actually be implemented. This was six months back.
Since that day, to this date, that guy asks me to add a new feature or just modify something every two weeks. These guys just want free work and think everyone is just free. Neither does he help a bit... just demands... god knows when this forever loop would end! It has become frustrating now...it just feels as though why i showed my skills in the first place 😐😖5 -
It is still blowing my mind how a button on my raspberry pi is programmatically functional in the same way as if I was programming a database and web app.

I've already done some small projects, helped a lot of people with code, do some freelance and I'm now trying to build a SAAS.

I'm thinking of opening a small onsite web development class for teenager (maybe between 10-20 yo). The problem in Indonesia is most of us learn programming language at an older age, maybe because of the language barrier and lack of good tutorials in Indonesian language.
I want to change that by teaching them early, so that in the future, Indonesia can contribute more to the world of software and web development. Maybe even create new JS frameworks.

The web is just a fucked up place. Anytime i have an idea and wanna slap together an mvp, i always feel like web standards are just made by people who have no professional training and once every year come up with some bullshit so they dont get fired.

You wpuld think that setting "access-control-allow-origin" to * would let, well, * through, like in every other field of programming, but no, make sure all 97 other headers match or you will just get a cors error. The server expects application/json and you didnt specify that? Fuck you, have a cors error. Both express and flask have specific packages addressing this one problem so i guess im not the only one.

First day of web server programming class. The teacher clearly doesn't know anything. He doesn't even know what the course is about! When someone asks him what it is, he mumbles about "dynamic" something... Then he says we will be using the languages JavaScript, MVC, and PHP. What the fuck. MVC? LANGUAGE?
He then tries to come up with some project we could make, and is not going to teach anything apparently. Keep in mind, most people in this class have very little previous experience with programming.
After not saying anything for a long time, he finally tells us to make a clock in JavaScript. A CLOCK. He is supposed to teach how to make Web APIs and such, but instead, he tells us to make a clock in JavaScript, and that's it.

I've chosen system/embedded programming because I liked system programming and did not like anything connected with web, frontend or UI.
So far it seems like it was a good choice. Even though web was not such a clusterfuck before, it was already repulsive. -
I'm in a programming school that gives only projects in C and a method to learn quickly.
Then we don't have official web classes or anything so we have "Labs" or "Clubs" and last time I was at a web programming club, leaded by students (because it gives me some more credits).
I was very surprised because they began to try to learn us the Javascript without talking about DOM.
And their explications about server-side and client-side codes were not clear (and obviously not exhaustive).
I have some (not a lot neither) experience in web programming so I helped him to make his course more understandable but I can't believe that these courses are given by students who don't have any idea of what's web programming...3 -

Focus of mastering one language, don't jump around to every web langue out there.
Also don't follow the programming language band wagon. Focus and master the basics first HTML, CSS, Jquery. These aren't going anywhere and a SOLID understanding of JavaScript will go WAY further then you think4 -

Went to some school for testing out different industries but didn't have any goal nor found anything I was really interested in..
So i was tested for qualifications and told I was too stupid to be in IT..
So I decided to prove them wrong, went for an it supporter ground course and aced it with top grades + extra courses..
But still had no goals or dreams.
On that education, I met a friend who wanted to be a web programmer, so I decided to walk that path and aced another education with top grades..
Then I found, that I actually sorta enjoy programming and doesn't get bored quickly so then, I decided to plant my flag and become a programmer :)1 -
I want to program everyday for a whole year because I want to use the programming knowledge that I learned and use it in ways that will make me think outside the box. Hopefully, I can grab freelance work as a Web Developer, which has been in high demand these past few years.

As a junior dev from a sysadmin and security background, this is a list of software development concepts I never seemed to truly understand but hope to(rated from most intimidating to least):
1) Frontend web development and all the huge world of javascript frameworks and tools. - It's more overwhelming than the political geography of the Holy Roman Empire in the Middle Ages.
2) Machine Learning, Deep Learning and A.I- too much math that fucks with my brain.
3) low-level programming(kernel,drivers) - sounds extremely interesting but the code in assembly/C/C++ looks like Linear A Minoan hieroglyphics.
4) Rx(insert language here) - I never get why it is useful or why someone invented this. Seems interesting though.
5) Code Reflection - sounds like Thelemic magick.
6) Packaging, automation, build tools, devops, CI, Testing -seems too complicated. I just want to run an executable at the client or make a web app that does something. Why all this process?6 -
One of my cousin started his higher studies in Computer Sciences. He asked me to teach him any web language so I started with JavaScript. After one week, he came to me complaining that according to his C++ professor, JS is a worst programming language. The professor told him not to learn it.

just found out a vulnerability in the website of the 3rd best high school in my country.
TL;DR: they had burried in some folders a c99 shell.
i am a begginer html/sql/php guy and really was looking into learning a bit here and there about them because i really like problem solving and found out ctfs mainly focus on this part of programming. i am a c++ programmer which does school contest like programming problems and i really enjoy them.
now back on topic.
with this urge to learn more web programming i said to myself what other method to learn better than real life sites! so i did just that. i first checked my school site. right click. inspect element. it seemed the site was made with wordpress. after looking more into the html code for the site i concluded all the images and files i could see on the site were from a folder on the server named 'wp-content/uploads'. i checked the folder. and here it got interesting. i did a get request on the site. saw the details. then i checked the site. bingo! there are 3 folders named '2017', '2018', '2019'. i said to myself: 'i am god.'
i could literally see all the announcements they have made from 2017-2019. and they were organised by month!!! my curiosity to see everything got me to the final destination.
with this adrenaline i thought about another site. in my city i have the 3rd most acclaimed high school in the country. what about checking their security?
so i typed the web address. looked around. again, right click, inspect element and looked around the source code. this time i was more lucky. this site is handmade!!! i was soooo happy because with my school's site i was restricted with what they have made with wordpress and i don't have much experience with it.
amd so i began looking what request the site made for the logos and other links. it seemed all the other links on the site were with this format: www.site.com/index.php?home. and i was very confused and still am. is this referencing some part of the site in the index.php file? is the whole site written inside the index.php file and with the question mark you just get to a part of the site? i don't really get it.
so nothing interesting inside the networking tab, just some stylesheets for the site's design i guess. i switched to the debugger tab and holy moly!! yes, it had that tree structure. very familiar. just like a project inside codeblocks or something familiar with it. and then it clicked me. there was the index.php file! and there was another folder from which i've seen nothing from the network tab. i finally got a lead!! i returned in the network tab, did a request to see the spgm folder and boooom a site appeared and i saw some files and folders from 2016. there was a spgm.js file and a spgm.php file. there was a contrib, flavors, gal and lang folders. then it once again clicked me! the lang folder was las updated this year in february. so i checked the folder and there were some files named lang with the extension named after their language and these files were last updated in 2016 so i left them alone. but there was this little snitch, this little 650K file named after the name of the school's site with the extension '.php' aaaaand it was last modified this year!!!! i was so excited! i thought i found a secret and different design of the site or something completely else! i clicked it and at first i was scared there was this black/red theme going on my screen and something was a little odd. there were no school announcements or event, nononoooo. this was still a tree structured view. at the top of the site it's written '!c99Shell v. 1.0...'
this was a big nono. i saw i could acces all kinds of folders. then i switched to the normal school website and tried to access a folder i have seen named userfiles and got a 403 forbidden error. wopsie. i then switched to the c99 shell website and tried to access the userfiles folder and my boy showed all of its contents. it was nakeeed naked. like very naked. and in the userfiles folder there were all, but i mean ALL files and folders they have on the server. there were a file with the salary of each job available in the school. some announcements. there was a list with all the students which failed classes. there were folders for contests they held. it was an absolute mess and i couldn't believe it.
i stopped and looked at the monitor. what have i done? just to learn some web programming i just leaked the server of the 3rd most famous high school in my country. image a black hat which would have seriously caused more damage. currently i am writing an email to the school to updrage their security because it is reaaaaly bad.
and the journy didn't end here. i 'hacked' the site 2 days ago and just now i thought about writing an email to the school. after i found i could access the WHOLE server i searched for the real attacker so if you want to knkw how this one went let me know in the comments.

What are the things in computer science do I need to learn?
So yeah, I'm still in high school and will be entering IT in a few years, but I am willing to learn now. I already have a good grasp of programming and can create good desktop apps and basic web apps, so teaching basic concepts such as variables, loops, functions is done for me.. the more i learn about web dev, the more i realise the reason for its mess up . There are 2 major problems in it : the people who create various important concepts and tools for web dev were 1) working on it without any collaboration and agreements on the philosophy and 2) were too stubborn on their ideology i guess.

Python is so simple and fast to implement that I end up doing all my projects ( web dev, ML, crawlers, etc.) But still I can't use Python for solving competitive programming. I started to teach my partner some programming basics (web, just html and some css for starters), since they asked me to. So far we haven’t killed each others, so it’s going much better than expected.

Such as there are governing bodies indiciating how a programming language evolves and a web consortium...there should be a computer science one. That dictates fundamental approaches covering everything that belongs to this wonderful branch of science. Everything from math to differenr scientific branches all the way down to turtles. And for it to be standarized and updated. Indeed, if you want to spend your entire existence gobbling js in the form of web sites then that is fine, but you should have sufficient knowledge to branch out into more academic pursuits if required.
Also, updated tools would be better, every aspiring computer scientist shall be able to navigate through all major operating systems and programming environments regardless of their beliefs and or prefferences and schools should provide said environments in their classrooms.
Data Strucrutes and Algorithms should be a must. Software engineering principles should be a must. Calculus, Algebra and Statistics as well as Physica should be a must.
And succesfully navigating over different engineering areas should be a must.
Not to cleanse the industry. Fuck your elitist mentality. If you think that programming is a sacred art that should exclude people then I really hope you fucking disapear from existence. No, not to cleanse. But to expand the industry and maybe show people that there is more than fucking around between node modules or gemsets.

I like being diverse in what I can program. I like software development, web development, networking programming, I’m starting to get into embedding programming and using lower level languages like C/C++ (I’ve used them before but not for anything practical) and I enjoy the diversity. It makes me feel good knowing I can extend my programming knowledge.
Also I like having project ideas lined up so I know what I want to do next. And if I don’t finish one I know is easy but I can’t figure out, I CANT MOVE ON! I have to finish it. It’ll drive me fucking nuts.11 -

I have always been interested in computers. when I was in second grade, I decided I was no good at electronic circuits, and decided I wanted to program instead. My dad told be to check out free basic, and I immediately downloaded FBIDE, and followed tutorial videos on YouTube. once I finished the videos, I started to write mad libs programs. I made various types of calculators, etc. and loved it, so later I learned a bit of VB. I messed with that a bit, but didn't like it too much, and started web developing. The moment I saw some JS code, it was like an instinctive second language to me. I learned js and started making some ugly, but cool interactive web pages. When computercraft came out for minecraft, I learned lua and got a deeper understanding of programming. Now, I am using node to build a personal-use IoT server and currently making a drone flight program using a raspberry pi3

I decided to dive into programming by learning C#. Main reason behind it was to avoid the zillions of frameworks and technologies (which scare me) and most importantly dumb client requests. I already have a lot of xp as a designer and working for the web bizz was just UGH!
Nevertheless, I am still wondering if I should pick up some web technologies. I am planning to pick up .NET and C# design patterns next, but what then? Do you think it's smart to focus only on enterprise software development today? I don't mind developing a bigger web-based app or doing server-related stuff either. Everything but startups and developing sites for my cousin's friend's sister hair saloon.
What is the smartest way to go with C# as a starting point in terms of job opportunities?3 -

Lisp is imperative. It's just different way to define the exact data transformations, and that's quite imperative.
On the other hand, HTML, CSS, config files and markup languages are declarative.
But writing the imperative program which is configured with declarative configs seems like great idea. Consider Apache web server and others.3 -
I need help!
This is gonna be a long question/story.
I'm a Syrian based in Malaysia working as a lead web dev in a good company.
I have a friend in trouble and I want to help him.
Here's a summary:
My friend is a project manager at a gaming studio he happens to be an Iranian atheist with around 2 years of experience in the game making industry.
He worked on and delivered a couple AAA games at his current place of employment as a project manager in one of the teams that made those games.
He stood up for his team when the management was overworking team till after midnight sometimes and forcing them to work on weekends without any tangible compensations ( basically they gave them things like free lunches, movie tickets, etc).
The result of his standing up to his team was the management handing him a notice telling him that he'll be fired within 2 months due to "underperforming".
This was a month and a half ago.
He looked around in Malaysia for a job that can get him a working visa, but his niche background couldn't help.
After his termination in few weeks he can extend his stay at Malaysia for approximately 2 - 3 months.
Now the reason why I mentioned that he's an "Iranian atheist" is the fun part of this story (sarcasm), Iranian government considers him as an "infidel" and he's banned from Iran.
His Iranian passport can't get him anywhere where he can make a living.
So basically he has close to no options.
Now to where I come into all of this:
I want to help him.
I'm going to dedicate my free time for the next 2 - 3 months teaching him web development, the problem is, I don't know how to teach web development in such a short time, in fact I've never taught anyone programming from scratch.
If he can show promising results I know that I can make a case for him get him a position in the company I work for.
I already convinced him today to try and learn web development because I can tell that in Malaysia there's always demand on good web developers.
Now to my request:
how can I best teach web development to someone with no programming background ? I'm thinking about teaching him front end development, so: HTML, CSS/SASS and JavaScript. maybe react js as well if possible ( high demand is usually on React/ Angular front end developers)

Being drunk I keep thinking I can't get back the years I didn't spend programming when I was 16-20. What do now? Want to do Web but all I know is a micro part of everything. I can make a demo in old Unity. I have shitty basic skills in Java, Python, Pascal, JS + React. Also basic UX, Adobe design programs like AI, PS and ID. In high school I absolutely hated business and science subjects(phy, chem, bio) as well.
Not to forget fucking maths. Calculas and all that shit I never paid attention to.
I chose CS hoping it would rid me of maths.
Fell in love with programming the very first semester.

Okay I'm back to Dev Rant tho it still looks new and confusing sometimes, maybe because I'm new to programming world. Hand-coded or drag-and-drop web design do you prefer? And why?
I have been hand coding for a long time since I started programming. In fact, HTML is my first 'language'. I found that it is very slow to code compared to my normal friends who use Wix - which makes me consider a change.

My current side project. I’m doing a POC to upskill in functional programming. A Java/Dropwizard web service calling onto business logic written in Clojure. The bit im excited about is an HTML engine im writing in Clojure. So instead of inter-mixing raw HTML with code, my views will be written entirely in Clojure

My favorite is native programming(desktop and mobile) followed by backend programming.
My least favorite area has to be web frontend and DSL automation.1 -

Started doing web with POCO in C++. Could not be as pleased as now. Syntax is cool, framework is cool, GNU Makefiles are cool, aclocal isn't, but... Go to hell automake. I am happy, helping a friend and enjoying what I feel as the chilliest programming language is becoming the way I do web. -
In elementary school, when I got my first computer (a 286 with b/w monitor and a whopping 8mhz), I discovered that a .bat file was nothing more than a set of instructions.
So my first "programs" where nothing more than .bat files. Then, at summer camp, one of the instructors noticed I was kind of a nerd, so he introduced me to QBasic. Later on, a friend of my mother showed me Turbo Pascal 6.0. So I was already creating games when I left elementary school.
Then, on secondary school, I stopped most of my programming stuff and was mostly interested in drawing and making music.
But, on college I rediscovered programming with Flash, HTML, PHP and Director. This was around the time that AS2 and PHP4 were still cool.
Later on, in university, I became nerd full on, but still the main focus on web development. -
Some time ago i started programming an web chat application without frameworks that requires the user to have an active inventation url fron the application admin to be able to register. Im trying to do a lot of stuff with little code with imperative design philosophy.

I've been familiar with C Programming and to sn intermediate level with web design, and currently I'm taking an introductory java Course, And The instructor kinda started with some simple gui apps using swing components on netbeans environment , his claim is that console apps are not that relative in the real word anymore , and gui apps are more interesting for newcomers , and I personally don't think it's a very effective approach , what's your opinion ?4

As an undergraduate junior, programming beyond basic data types is very overwhelming. Web and mobile seem great. So does ML. Open source is amazing to use but scary to contribute to. Seriously, being a programmer or even trying to be can be hard.2

People keep telling me that fullstack/web/mobile isn't real programming, and only "heavy" stuff like OS/Performence/libraries & SDK/Malware is "real".
I think they are just assholes. But these stuff are cooler than building a CRUD app.

It's amazing how many nice build tools there are to make life easier as a web developer. Learning those tools themselves and figuring out why / when they are useful is always pretty confusing haha, endless configuration details. Perhaps more so for myself because I only stared Programming in 2014. But now that I have learned how to use them more extensively I couldn't imagine how much of a pain it would be to not have them.1

I'm working in a company as fullstack developer where we use Angular for frontend, and C# for backend, lots of cool things to learn, for instance, we need a way to dynamically load forms controlled from backend, not something that is common but interesting to solve.
However, I feel sometimes I don't belong here, not because the things we do is not fun, it's just that most of the developers have very little experience with building web apps. And this means I don't develop as much as I wanted towards the web path.
I was informed before starting here, that 3 web devs would be hired including me, and they have experience with Angular. After I was hired, one guy decided to jump off (skilled web dev), and it was only me and the other guy left. The other guy has little experience with the web in general, but extremely good in terms of architecture and programming patterns in C#.
The salary is fine, but it's just I don't feel the growth I was expecting. Most of the things I learn on my own, which I've done in the past years.
I'm thinking that if I work in a place with skilled web devs, I'll learn lots of great things which I don't have to search all the time.3 -
Finding a lack of courses on Web development at my university (1996) I went out and bought my own HTML and JavaScript books. Then I used my employer's servers to set up three web servers and did a PR site for them. After that, I hung out a shingle and built sites for a private eye agency and an art gallery. The university asked me to teach a continuing education class on Web design. Then I got hired by an insurance startup programming ASP/MSSQL/IIS and the rest is history.

My Grandma had an old PC in my childhood. That laid the stone. Then I took a "PC Basics" course in my hometown in 4th-grade, which covered Building a PC, programming it with the weird Turtle stuff and Lego Mindstorms.
Learned HTML in 4th grade. Tried C++ in 5th. Took a while to get serious, 10th grade Java gave the last kick. Studying CS now at the TUM and working as a Web Designer in parallel. -

I think it was very useful for developing soft skills like time management, teamwork, dealing with failures, the willingness to learn and how to approach a problem, etc.
It's not about learning a technology or programming language super good and be the C++ or Web expert after finishing your degree. It's about self organization and problem solving IMO. -

It's getting on my nerve to constantly change from one programming language to another in one semester. We are learning web development (html css js), functional programming (haskell), speech analysis (matlab) and logical programming (prolog). It's driving me kinda mad having to change the approach for each assignment every few days.2

I am looking for some advice on common practices when doing a programming job for someone else.
So i took a pay-per-hour job from an acquaintance who wanted me to develop a little tool in a web environment. I finished the tool in 16 hours and now its time for me to hand it over. I will probably do more jobs like this for him in the future.
Is it common to add the guy as a collaborator on my git repo, even when there will be code from future projects on there, that will be in-progress and not yet paid for?
Should i develop on another repo/fork and only push 'public' code to a shared repo once my work is finished?
Should i share source code at all, or only share compiled/deployable project folders?
I am not familiar with the common practices in this aspect of the programming business; this was the first programming job i got.

So found I found a not so helpful terminal emulator, a programming keyboard, enough IDEs to make your head spin, and a few rooted apps if rooting was an option right now. I'm half tempted to setup ssh and ftp on a cloud server such as Google cloud.
I'm doing this to see if it's possible and able to be used during work, although I am beginning to doubt the idea will make it into my development cycle.4 -

Admittedly as an engineer my SQL knowledge is minimal and I develop database driven web applications on a daily basis. Most programming languages have object-relational-mappers that handle things for me. I have a unified object store with easy querying and SQL is handled form me. You don’t have to be an expert in every technology to be an engineer.8

Initially,I used codeacademy in highschool, because my school didn't offer a programming class, just web design and cad. Never got into the web design class, so I took three years of Autodesk AutoCAD in highschool. I took the HTML course on code academy and thought it was alright. Ended up going to a community college not knowing what i wanted to do. I'm currently on track to getting an associate's in CS, because I was told the school said they were sunsetting the cad program. Finishing up my capstone project and presenting it in two weeks.5

That debug moment where you have 50+ different vs.net web projects in one solution and each of the said web projects were set up using point-and-click web references, then realised that the developer who created it did not even bother to let people know that you need to run it all simultaneously and did not bother to use host names but instead used the http://localhost:<some-random-port> in IIS express.
Oh, just to rub salt in the wound, each project's programming code files jumps from a mix of vb.net to c# which is a complete waste of time and energy to do.

I remember when i was first deciding whether to do web programming or desktop applications, i chose java/C/C++ mainly because I already had experience. Back then when i was researching web stuff it was HTML + CSS + javascript and something called jquery, ok cool seems like I can pick it up in the future. Fastforward to 2018 and i was looking to get into it, BUT holy fucking shit what a confusing minefield and cesspool of javascript horror and frameworks and bloat, wtf happened??

I’d either advise a small break where you just focus on other hobbies for a few and let yourself relax,
or I would say learn something new like a new programming language, or a new area of programming (like game development or web development) and just try to make your own projects and stuff that you find fun or new,
or maybe focus on something different in tech, like try IT, Networking, Security, etc.

Today my old professor wrote on my school's slack channel that someone was needing some js and css work on their web page. Even though i have a good grasp of programming (I've been studying for 7 years while working as McDonald's to pay), front end web work isn't my forte, but I might be able to do it.
On the one hand it would be nice to have something to show to potential employers, but I'm a bit too nervous and I'm not interested in doing front end for future employment. What was it like when you received your first client? Nervous? Confident? I want to hear everyone's early experiences. -

When I got to high school, I started learning Java from friends who were in programming class. Started out as a comp sci major in college and got sick of it, so I switched to a digital art degree. Got interested in Java again for the creation of art and music using generative processes. Then I got into web dev and JavaScript. Years later, still learning new programming concepts and making digital art on the side.

Do you guys think this machine just displays a fullscreen web app made in html/css or is there another approach with an actual programming language, not markup language that one can take? I'm currently pursuing engineering in an Indian engineering college. Needless to say the college Curriculum isn't going to take me places.
I like programming and I feel I'm pretty good at it. So I need tips as to what I need to do apart from college to pursue programming.

Theory should be minimal courses, just something to think about and not something that expands through the entire curriculum as if anyone was to use it. Theory and fundamentals are enough, after that have career paths over what students want to focus on depending on a class that takes them through each different field: web development, db development, micro controller programming, os programming networking programming etc etc etc.
Basically, not :hey! here are some shitty basic programming classes, ok now let us move into calculus 1, 2, 3 etc etc. Most people come out of schools with no knowledge of what happens in the real world.3 -
Want to focus on increase my knowledge of C, Linux, rust or anything related to systems programming, practically the only jobs available in the country are web development jobs or Java, nothing else. So focus on my dreams or focus on not starving to death. This sucks.1

I am considering which CS elective to register for this coming semester, and I am not happy with many of the choices. Basically, I can choose between Android programming, a web programming class in the grad school, and maybe Linear Algebra for CS majors class. I am trying to figure out what is worthwhile to take in college, and what I can learn on my own. Advisor thinks I should take a web class, because it's important to know, but I am not too into web and I feel like I can just learn that on my own. I would rather take a class that will help me understand how things work, rather than just how to use a specific technology. What do you guys think?3

I started learning to programming when my dad introduced me to it, I then just started teaching myself and learning via trial and error. Started in C#, went to web (learnt HTML, CSS, JS) then started on SASS and CoffeeScript, after that went to C and C++, then started looking at Angular, and now I'm on Ruby.

On the other hand, I'm currently working as a fulltime fullstack developer on a project with lots of challenges. Its fun but not something I want to do for many years.
A voice inside me is telling me to go on this adventure, and focus on my company instead.
I feel like this is a special moment in my life, and one decision is the right one to take.

I hate exams, it makes feel sick, is there other ways to prove that I am a good dev? I mean, it doesn't look like I've been doing much if you consider the UI only, but I've been testing many scenarios of what works best, but unfortunately, the boss only cares about the code, and not how many concepts that have been tested.
So what the form basically does is if you click on the edit button, the inputs field will occur, and if you click on it again it will remove the lines around the input field for better presentation of the data.
How do you show to someone the work you've done, do you write notes or show them the code?3 -
At 7, I found the ZX-81 of my dad in the attic, then learn BASIC with books. I got some LOGO lessons at school, then we got internet at home around '96, and discover web programming... many years and langages later, I am freelance web developer and teach code in High School. :)

I've been programming for 24 years, and my eyesight only began to erode 18 months ago. As luck would have it, exactly 18 months ago I started coding web apps exclusively in my IDE's dark mode, then previewing my work in an all-white browser. Huh.2

As soon as we got into the actual coding part of my first college programming class, I loved it. The next semester, I took two more programming classes and an introductory web development class, and about halfway through that semester, I knew this was what I wanted to do for a living. 2 1/2 years later, I've worked as web developer, both for a small company and a freelancer, I have a web development internship lined up for this fall that I'm excited about, I've written a few smaller programs in a couple languages just for fun, and I wouldn't want to do anything else at this point.

How would I go about programming such device in terms of software and language? Would I use HTML and make a web interface? Need advice so I can get started on this idea that I have.

It seems odd that in a world where Web developers are mostly developing api first there are no tools that allow you to browse an unfinished but already authenticated REST api.
I would really like to have one but programming a full IDE/Project manager sounds like too big of a project.6 -
I was leaning programming in high school and got so addicted and curious that I started learning how to do a web browser, a tic tac toe game and those kinds of things (using visual basic and pascal)
My teacher said that even she didn't knew how to do those, and that I had to explore my "talent"

LEARNING QUESTION
I have been learning a lot of coding, front and back end web mainly (a touch of C# and Python but trying to keep my focus on web for now).
I am wondering where is the best place to learn about integration of SQL into other web programming (PHP for example).

I have to deal with the hardest part of programming: naming things! i fucking hate it, being so incredible uncreative finding a name for a side project..
So heres my idea: I want to build a little cli tool (and probably in the future an app or a web interface) with a rest api on my server for simple storing text snippets. I will be a simple key value store, but my goal is experimenting with new languages and software ;)

Hey all! I'm gonna be graduating soon from grad school and I'm starting to realize that I have no idea what I wanna do with my programming career!
I currently work as QA but have been really working towards being a programmer but the only problem is that I really dislike web applications ... specifically front end.
With most jobs being full stack web apps, I feel like I'm really gonna be limiting myself once I'm applying for junior software engineering jobs.
I'm just wanting your thoughts and some advice on what I should do since in still trying to figure things out. The only goal I have in life for my career at the moment is to be a software engineer.5 -

After feeling like I was loosing so much time curating my way through blogs, social networks, and community forums to keep up with the latest programming news, I decided to create a side project to scratch my own itch. (Typical developer history XD)
The website is called StackTrender and it's basically a programming news aggregation that consumes articles from the web and curates them in terms of engagement (votes/likes, comments and social shares) to remove the "less interesting" articles and generate an easier to read news feed.
It's still a work in progress but, if you somehow related to my situation, feel free to take a look and comment with some feedback.

The thirst for revenge got me to learn Batch, making fancy CLI programs. It wasn't until I got into Web Dev with self-directed lessons to learn HTML4, CSS2 and JS ES4 where I started programming more and more.
And apart from the high school course and uni it was mostly self-direction that got me to know how to program and code. -
