Mother (working in recruitment): "What's the difference between JavaScript and Java?"
Me: "I'm glad you finally asked that..."10 -
So before I resign from my job tomorrow I thought I'd talk a little about a couple of things at work that I won't ever tell my boss in person but are generally some of the reasons I want to leave.
---------- warning long rant ----------
1. The CEO of the company finds out I only have my learner's and take the bus, goes on to belittle me about taking the bus.
(It may have been meant as a joke but I was offended, and we don't have any actual HR to complain to)
First off my real reason for not getting my restricted is mostly related to the fact public transportation does the job it needs to, I don't really complain unless the planning is fucked up (Adele concert rant lol) but typically I don't need a car. The other reason is because with a car I'd have to wait in traffic 1-2 hour each way. Also cars cost money which I don't have.
2. CEO buys himself and general manager brand new Range Rovers, you know those giant monstrosities box jeep looking things.
I hate this because I earn $31k, those things probably cost around $50 each (so typically 3 years worth of my wages).
When I had a talk about my contract at the 6 month mark, the general manager (my boss) said he wouldn't budge on my salary (yet they buy these jeeps)
3. I live way too far from work and because of it being Auckland and the current inflation for house prices, the rent prices have also increase, I wouldn't be able to get a house closer to home nor rent with minimum wage :(
4. Though it's not too necessary they mask that the app was made by me, whenever I see an email about the app to potential clients they refer to be as this app guy, and during their presentations they don't really include as part of the reason this app has been developed ( aside from my boss being the client, I came up with some interesting ideas to turn their paper form of the process they use into a digital one, I also did research for the specific topics, something I could have just asked for instead).
5. Old fashioned way of looking at so called "IT", they added fixing computers to my contract which I dread, especially since I'll be close to a deadline and then I get a call to fix someone's computer...
6. They don't seem to want to expand their "development team" to more than one person.
When I give my resignation I have to stay here for a month and I bet people will start to act differently around me, my likely my boss and the CEO. I think the other people that work will understand, given my situation.
I'm planning to for the last month to only do planning for the app they want me to work on, UML diagrams, use cases, Sprint planning (albiet, only developer here lol). Research on the third party libraries we need for the app and generally give the next guy the easiest path to getting the app done.
I want to do this because the Android and iOS app we're done via cowboy programming in a sense. (I don't have too much in terms of documentation and planning aside from a Microsoft planning website setup with to-do of which features are done for the iOS and paper Todo for the Android app.
Alright long rant over, I've got it all written down, glad I'll be leaving this place.51 -
Reasons why I update a software to the latest version:
1% - I'm glad that they fixed the bug
4% - I want the new features
95% - To get rid of reminders that don't allow to tick a "don't remind me later" field.4 -
Big stormish weather in the Netherlands today. I rely on public transportation for work and the trains are down 😩
Glad my parents live nearby my work!17 -
A sweet girl of my class asked me yesterday, if i can help her to refresh her IT skills. I said "yes ofc im glad to help" . Today she repeated it, while whole class was listening. Other classmates said" yeah good idea we want to join"
Well, fuck it..38 -
This little guy came and went in between my arm and my belly. He must be having a rough day. Just kinda glad I can make it better :)5

Work has been very stressful lately...

-
Welcome to the gang you sticky little sticker. Im glad they made all the way to germany. Thx @dfox8

worst experience with a manager was the (female) one who got away with harassing a female employee for YEARS and thought it was ok because she thought they were friends.
She also retaliated (in ways that were hard to prove), played favorites, didn't know metrics or general business sense, couldn't do her employee's jobs but loved to tell them how they were wrong all the time, and then when she was fired, after the female coworker finally reported the ass slapping and the harassment based on disability, she went back into employee only areas with client personal information and thought taking selfies was ok (she was very quickly corrected and had to wipe her phone and memory card to ensure she hadn't been doing it when she wasn't caught, which cameras later proved she had been).
(I only sound calm. I will take a needle to her probably fake boobs and deflate them with glee if I ever see her again)4 -
*FourWeeks From Deadline*
Two CoWorkers: "Oh cool, Visual Studio 2017 is out, I am gonna switch"
Breaks the build.
They then tried to spend hours trying to get the project to work on both versions, with no success, then let us know.
I am just glad we use Git4 -
Coworkers: "Who still even uses vim? Glad we've got Visual Studio so we don't have to deal with ancient shit tools like that!"
Me: "Psh, yeah, total losers right? Haha!"
**Sheepishly returns to coding using the VsVim extension**8 -

God damn, was I living under a rock all this time. Where were you(devrant) all this time?? So glad I came here.
Downloaded this app few days ago and have used this app more than fb, insta or Twitter.11 -
My gf said some of Japanese companies specifically ask developers to code for IE6 and IE6 only. 🕺
Glad that I don't have to work for them.5 -
When I realized that my rant on wk60 had only one ++ and that one was by @dfox, I was glad that I'm not alone 😀2

I'm pretty young for a dev and I am still learning as one but I find it sad how nobody at my middle school knows anything about code. But I'm glad I got this app because I get to see what devs are up to 😃 blessdd12

Being rejected as "unprofessional" for explaining that I don't want to rush a decision 2 days before Christmas. By the guy who, I kid you not, showed their EKS credentials on screen during a recorded online interview. Kinda glad I dodged that one now that I'm looking back...6
-
Found this in a code base I just started to work with. I'm glad it wasn't referenced anywhere. This is going to be fun...4
-
Project for school: The answer in most cases is no. I feel glad I could make a documentary on this topic.25
-
It's nice to make posts/rants in a community that embraces the developer life. Too many normies on my Facebook or other social media platforms, no one understands or can relate to what I post there. Anyways, glad I found devRant.

🔐How can a manufacturer(Netgear) not allow changing username of the admin user???🔥
That effectively lets anyone bruteforce the damn thing like its being grilled on a BBQ!
Yet they implement remote access router management via 8080 and alley you set up VPN server on the incapable thing.7 -

My life is just a series of disappointments right now from the people around me. Both personally and professionally. Glad I get to spend most of the time staring at a computer. Lifeless, yet the only rational elements in my life!2
-
it wasn't even an interview, they were just glad my cv wasn't absolute garbage, it was basically an introduction and welcome to the team. the only question i remember being asked was wether i preferred FE or BE (which was pointless, because i ended up helping with full stack)2

Here's to productive, sane co-workers!1 -
Interviewer: “I agree, companies should stop calling people devops engineers, devops is a culture”
Me: “I’m glad you see it that way too”

Me: 🤨2 -
IT security calls to tell me my new password, because it is poor practice to send it over encrypted message.
New password = password
I'm glad we are taking security so seriously!2 -
Sometimes you get too used to everything, that you forget to be humble and curious, to explore and learn new things all the time. I miss the time when I say:oh this shit is cool, I am gonna try it out.
Glad someone knocked this back into me. -

So my pm gave me a task and estimated it to 6 days. I was like, well, thats a vacation for me isn't it :). I started it 3 days later and read the description... Get these api into this app..etc..mvp and all... so I worked on the views first. Later I found out that the api were totally incompatible, and no such data was found or COULD BE MADE for the app. that was day 1 :)
I kept publishing apks with empty views, nice empties If I do say so, and just said we have to wait for backend to make tokens and data. Vacation starts, (sorry boss if you're reading this :D)
On day 6, the PMs were just rushing up and down, contacting backend, back to me, then backend, office ping pong, (a lovely sight), til the senior SysAdmin said, its impossible. Of course I knew this, buuuut, who would miss such a lovely opportunity.
PS: to all PMs, keep on dreaming those impossible ideas :) -
I'm really glad my parent knew the importance of computers. They bought my brother a PC in 2000 and we got the chance to learn a great deal of things. I remember those times with a grin on my face. Probably the happiest years of my life. :)3
-
I've never been more glad for ubuntu on Windows. Python dependencies (through babun) were fuckin' me left, right and centre.2

Dev: I see you have tattoo
Person: I do. Thank you.
Dev: I never said it was good

I'm glad i got to experiance this beautiful moment -
Windows asks to update. I say no and 10min later i get this casual update continuing.
Glad i have a say in life8 -
Ah yes, the casual 1500 lines file that is a huge switch that somehow handles routing, half of the logic and two thirds of state managment. Nice to meet you, I'm glad I can work with you.3

I hate windows.
I hate windows update.
I hate windows update rebooting my PC and not reopen everything from last session.
I hate windows update trying to install updates while running from battery in power save mode.
I hate windows not being able to figure out where to put windows on dual head setup.
I hate developing in windows environment.
Man I'm glad that I use windows at home only for gaming.
Man I'm glad that I can choose a non-windows PC on my new workplace.20 -
Woooooo! Someone ran a cleanup script that deleted all the RPM package our dev Oracle databases use. Glad I'm not that person.

Having found Stripe i am glad i can get rid of PayPal on all my projects.
Paypal is overrated.Stripe is the future of online payments for developers.2 -
When all your friends (which there ain't much of them) are out doing their own stuff, gf and family at the other side of the country, I'm glad devRant is here keeping me occupied and sane... and of course Steam too (but it'll always be 2nd)...2

That awkward moment when u look svn history to find out which idiot wrote this stupid code and u leant it was you yourself. You feel so glad you didn't go all gun blazing criticising the guy to your colleagues before ur investigation.
Lesson learnt for future ha ha ha1 -
So in two days I'm inheriting a project that's older than I am... This ought to be interesting.
I'm glad the other guy is going though4 -

Finally after 4 hours head banging now I understand how react native navigation works.
Really glad to see how it's turning out4 -
Visual studio keeps switching between dark and light themes automatically every couple minutes and it's infuriating.1
-
Woah! Collabs! Nice.
I'm actually glad it's a paid feature. The sheer entitlement of people using free software asking for development help for free has always bothered me.
Cool idea, I hope it works out! -
Hello, devs! I'm an intern at a mobile games company. I used to work with the game development there, but today I started my work in the support/tools team. Am so glad I can use Linux and ruby there *-*3

I think dark mode is the best thing ever invented and glad devRant has it, otherwise I would have been blinded by my bright white screen.
*Awkwardly starts playing Blinded by the Light song*8 -
Or is it my life that has impacted coding? I'm so glad I was born in the right time. I can't even imagine what I would do instead of coding if I had to live in say, the middle ages.3

Finally started to *properly* learn Java and make an Android application, instead of copying random code from SO. So glad I made that decision. Well, still a lot of things to learn :/
Here is what I made so far, if you are interested.

as much as i complain about work, I'm glad i have great colleagues in my team. they're a blast and they make this shitty job worthwhile. I've never been the type to make friends with coworkers, but they're really great people. i guess I'm really lucky3

After many months of hard work we are finally near to release the new website. It feels amazing and is such a relief. Some days it seemed like everything was against me but it's in times like these I am so glad to be a developer.2

After hassling and saying all the benefits of Linux finally we agreed that she'd give Linux a go on her old laptop and after all the set ups she changes the background picture to windows xp's landscape just to feel good. Change never comes with some people.

My parents didn't care at all. I guess they were just glad that they didn't have to pay for my expenses anymore, which they barely did anyway. Both have worked in physically demanding jobs and were extremely restrictive in the amount of time I could spend with computers.
Fucktards. -
Spent 2 days on a client's site to do an install of our equipment on a huge project. Pretty rare for our company to install themselves.
And holy shit, I'm so glad this isn't my everyday work -
I officially gave up on this semester of college! ✨🍻🎉
I'm coming back next year, but until then, I'm glad to disappoint my family3 -

Finally got my "new" keyboard! Had to use one of these at work for few months and I loved it. It has that classic tactile, clicky feel. I almost got an expensive mechanical one, but I'm glad I didn't.6

You tell them this design is going to be complex, do we really need it?
They say yes.
We come up with the solution with lots of hair loss.
They say, "this looks really complex, But we are glad you came up with this".
Nuf said.1 -
I changed nothing but now it works.
It's been over one week since I started battling this bug. I guess I'm glad it's fixed, but how, and why?4 -
To you, who use Windows 11. Is there at least one feature that makes you glad you switched from 10 to 11? Or maybe not necessarily glad, but it would make you appreciate the new OS? One thing that would make the upgrade worth it... I myself can not think of a single fucking thing. (Please don't say better HDR support, that's the one most often mentioned feature. Definitely not good enough reason to have a new OS)11
-
I'm glad @dfox has put the "3 rants/hour" limitation. Otherwise, the way I feel to rant, I would have filled up the timeline.1
-
Glad that I've worked about 2½ days on an angular component, with all the struggles, brainstorming and meticulous care for "good" and "readable" code, just to find out that I misunderstood the requirements. Had to completely rewrite it...1

Doing personal online shopping whilst waiting for code to compile (took about 10-15 min every time, just for the smallest code change).

When I was in 2nd grade in my school and it was a mandatory course for all the students.

A few years ago a client who sold printer ink on eBay and Amazon wanted to branch out to another store, so I grudgingly began to implement the new API, I followed all the API docs but no matter what, I couldn’t get it to work, eventually I contacted their support and was told it should work. Turns out the test API was faulty and that they had no interest in fixing it instead suggested we tried test data on their live account. I refused and for once the PM agreed with me and went back to the client saying the problem was the retailer.

Oh, we are not yet done, get the username and perform a DB query to get a user object.
Glad this answer has -34 on stack overflow...2 -
I was hired 2 years ago to replace someone who was retiring after 10+ years with the company. I was up to speed quickly and have improved my processes and product in ways appreciated by many others, but mine is a position everyone is glad to have and glad they aren't doing it! I feel rather inconsequential, especially since being neglected by management has become a comfort in that I've already turned my attention to opportunities outside the company and look forward to "putting in my time" without taking on new responsibilities until I can score a job in programming/development/product management.

Integrated vterm package in Emacs, I'm glad having true-and-efficient terminal emulation inside Emacs2

Prestashop Q&A website ... Who the hell thought it was a good idea to have COMPARATIVE bars not be aligned. This is literally UX 101.

Glad to see the Senate disapproves of FCC's action. Now to the House.

So I just released a thing I've been working on for the past few days and I'm very glad that it's finally public!
It's a thing that you can use on your website to let the user choose which cookie they want to allow.
https://github.com/metaa/cookiebox
It's worth playing around with the cookie panel in your developer console of your browser on the example page, too!
https://metaa.github.io/cookiebox/
I'd be glad to get some serious feedback and I hope it could be useful to someone out there. 😊 -
There are so many new devRant members the past 48 hours. Welcome! Glad you are here.
If you just joined during the past week how did you hear of devRant?12 -
The old company I was working at, was absolutely treating their new employees as shit. Everything was handled by the old timers who "knew how the world worked" (to those, TDD was useless, because as proven by this company only, it was a waste of time).
Everything that the new employees or "young talent" came up with, had to be talked through in a senior group, without the young talent. Never got anywhere, their software was absolute garbage (yet worked by sheer magic!!!!)
Today I learned that a former coworked had hos LinkedIn account say "[company]: waste of time."
And before you say "No company you work for, is a waste of time, as a software dev." i say, working for this company made you a worse developer. By. The. Fucking. Day.1 -
on Monday i finally decided to go to Control Panel and uninstall Visual Studio :)
i can't express the joy i felt minutes ago when the uninstall popup decided to appear -_-7 -
I was looking around an internal app that we use, and found this under group permissions.
Glad they're paying attention. -
I just can't mention one specific thing because I'll forget everything that would be worth a mention in my opinion too, so let's say I'm so fucking glad to be born right when this technologic wave started to grow :)

If only the Finance team in my office knew about the proportion of the salary that I get, that goes towards me browsing 9gag every month.
Glad they don't.1 -
The thing i worked for last 3 weeks has been scrapped.
Knew it was coming.
I'm glad the real boss is not unrealistic and impractical like my boss. -
Program seems to work better when there is about 2-3 times the amount of code related to error handling the task than just the task. I'm always glad to see quality stuff that accounts for the edge cases especially with helpful error messages.1

Was about to share one that I thought was worth the risk, but just as I refresh the feed, it shows up.
Glad I saved myself1 -

Well, they were pretty glad I came up with a better plan than acting (I was not that good at it) and the stars aligned for the dev life. The fact that two of my cousins are extremely successful devs probably helped1

Most of these windows lovers here exist just because windows haters don't have a solid reason and follow up on those who actually do have good reasons to hate windows.
Moral of the story: Don't hate windows just because you think all the devs hate it. Come up with some decent reasons to avoid gamers and microsoft warriors from crushing your rant.17 -
Last day working for my current employer. New job from Monday.
Even pinging Google loses 3/4 of packets. New Cisco router.

So glad I decided to use Spring Boot... Love it's bean configuration for dependency injections... Also love the RowMapper interface that's used with the JdbcTemplate. No more redundant Exception handling over and over again and I can still get close to the metal with writing my own queries. DOPE.

Need help/advise: 💻 Anyone's experience with Linux on MacBooks - I've had a lot of tried, including Arch, Ubuntu, Cent and probably more I can't remember.
🔴The issue is always the Desktop manager / UI / Window manager: either it's too 👹 ugly, or too heavy(read Ubuntu default).
Want to find the ultimate compromise with reasonable support for hardware, yet with high usability.
Things like multi-touch gestures are a bonus🔥(I know there's extra bins I can install for that)
I don't mind something more to configure, but would rather stick with apt-get and similar rather than having to manually build everything 😉
As you probably understood by now - I need something close to MacOS yet Linux based 😎8 -
Hi I love Manjaro so for this Christmas I have just installed it on my computer. But I don't why I can't turn on the Wi-Fi.

What's with people displaying their pronouns in SM but failing to put their family name in all caps? I'm glad you're so progressive, but as a person with an Indian name in London, have you considered enabling English people in talking to you first?6

I upgraded from VS 2017 to VS 2019 and I am quite impressed with the UI it is so less cramped and clustered than the older versions. Overall just has been a better experience minus some questionable build&compile&run times. But I am glad I upgraded now3

Just set up a job-interview for a junior development position for a good friend of mine. She showed me the application problem set afterwards, and turned down the job offer... I'm glad I wasn't asked to solve that problem when I got a job in the company!
