Tried to install an existing web dev project in Windows 10:
- Install Atom IDE and trying to clone git repo
- Git missing, installing Git for Windows
- Installing Node (so far so good!)
- npm install
- Python missing (???), installing Python
- Ruby (????????) missing, installing Ruby
- .NET Libraries missing, installing .NET 4.0 for the 100th time
- Visual Studio Libraries for C++ 2008 missing (now you're just messing with me mate), installing 4GB of Visual Studio Libraries
- [drumroll sound]
- .....
- npm install breaks with fatal error
- Git for Windows can't be found anymore
Switched to Ubuntu out of frustration:
- Installing Atom IDE
- Installing NodeJS
- Cloning git repo
- npm install
- project is running

yet another Microsoft bashing rant...
I'm trying to get `Visual Studio`
You use your Windows 10 VM, use Edge, use Bing and search for `Visual Studio`.
First fucking result:
A Visual Studio alternative - A powerful C & C++ IDE - CLion
-- from jetbrains.com
Like... WTF, you not even promoting your' own stuff ?
But then for when you search 'firefox' w/ bing+edge a thick fat banner: 'Promoted by Microsoft': There's no need to download a new web browser.\n MS recommends Edge for fast ...8 -
Visual Studio 2022 compiles our internal c++ cmake project as a mix of x86 and x86_64 binaries, then fails to link.
VS 2019 correctly compiles everything as x86_64.
No idea why. And, obviously, it's not a documented problem.6 -
How come Rust is the most loved programming language? I wanted to give rust a try in my windows machine and when I run `cargo run` or `cargo build` is shows: linker `link.exe` not found
Okay, how to fix it?
you need to download 8GB+ of bullshitty visual studio C++ build tools just to run a simple rust programs! WTF!
Previously when I installed rust, it didn't need all these bullcrap. why now?10 -
I've never even heard of this before.
Notes: these are two different ASP.Net projects. I didn't choose VB, the project was already existing.
A conversation between me and a senior:
Senior: (other module) still needs to develop (something you wrote)
Me: they should just use my code, it's compete and tested.
Senior: They should, but yours is in visual basic and they wrote their project in c#
Me: Ah, no problem, I will distribute it as a DLL for him.
Senior: No, I don't want to add dependencies
Me: ????
Senior: They will need to convert it to c# and add the classes
I stopped responding
Man............ what the hell5 -
[LANGUAGE DESIGN]
What are some interesting / unique approaches you've seen to representing generics in syntax? The only one I know is the Java/C#/Typescript way of using a separate set of parentheses and either specifying all of them or none, and I've already experimented a bit with passing them as regular arguments which works great with autocurry but every syntax option for inference adds visual noise.9 -
C++ development experience is absolute shit on Windows
Like using any IDE but VS (which is also shit cuz Micro$oft) to write anything in C++ is just absolute shit.10
