Meeting with client.
Me: our solution does not require a central server, any computer (windows, Mac or Linux) on which you install our software can act both as a client and a server
Client: no we need to have all our data on our server
Me: sure, you can install our software on any computer
Client: no, we need it on our server
Me: ok then, we can make the needed changes to install our software on your server, it will cost an additional fee though
Client: very good then17 -
Someone asked me once to put a timer in an installer to slow it down because apparently it would make the software seem to be more important if it took longer to install.
Ever since being asked this I now wonder does why it takes so long to install some software.. Do developers actually do this?7 -

WHY CAN'T I JUST SIMPLY INCLUDE THE MOTHERFUCKING THING IN THE HTML LIKE A FUCKING NORMAL PERSON?!
ALL I WANT IS TO INCLUDE A GODDAMN UI FRAMEWORK.
When I just started web development, this stuff was so fucking easy! Why did it become so motherfucking complicated to include simple shit like this?!
All I want is to start programing this motherfucker, not spend 3 hours on compiling CSS and whatnot (because I'd have to learn this bullshit first).
Mother of god, why did this become so fucking obnoxious?
I. JUST. WANT. TO. INCLUDE. TWO. FUCKING. FILES.69 -
Arch users are literally like vegans, or guys who study the law - they can’t live normally if they don’t tell you that they use it. Just because you can install it, doesn’t make you instantly a Linux god. It’s like Kali users that they think that they’re hackers if they install it, or MacBook users that think that they are “kool kids” because they have a laptop that thousands of other people have.
Nobody. Cares.10 -

I have never doubted my abilities more, before this happened:
I got a Linux VM on Azure, downloaded apache httpd source which I proceeded to configure, make and install.
As expected, install failed with something related to apr and apr-util.
Searched several mailing lists, tried out several configure options, nothing worked..
After almost an hour, it stuck to me, all I had to do was "sudo yum install httpd" !!!
Disappointed that I missed something so simple, but when I did that, it came back with 'Nothing to do'...
Realized, httpd was pre-installed in that VM.. I just had to start the service !!!
:facepalm1 -

WTF is with the entire Angular2 eco system and "half instructions". Started learning it and every inch is a struggle, out dated docs and code samples and then this style of shit:
Google: "Angular2 and bootstrap"
Result: "Install ng-bootstrap to get native bootstrap components written in Angular by the Angular UI team"
Me: Install != work
Google: "ng-bootstrap not working"
Result: "You also need to install bootstrap css, heres how"
Me: Install, plus try component
Error: "Bootstrap requires jQuery"
Google: "Installing jQuery in Angular 2"
Result: <Instructions>
Me: Install, still not working
Google "Angular2 ng-bootstrap bootstrap jQuery"
Result: "Don't forget to also include Tether"

My neural networks journey so far:
Look up tutorials -> see that Python is a popular tool for ML -> install Python -> pip install scipy -> breaks with some weird error involving BLAS library code -> spend half an hour fixing it -> try installing Theano -> breaks because my USERNAME HAS A SPACE IN IT LIKE SERIOUSLY? WTF -> make new account without a space in the name -> repeat till Theano -> run tests, found out that I didn't install CUDA support -> scrap the install and redo with CUDA support -> CUDA libraries take forever to download on shitty internet -> run tests -> breaks with some weird Theano compiler error -> go crying to friend -> friend tells me about Anaconda -> scrap the previous install and download Anaconda over shitty connection -> mess up conda environments because noobishness -> scrap, retry -> YESS I FINALLY GOT IT WORKING TIME TO DO SOME LEARNI-crap it's 4 in the morning already.
I realize that I'm a Python noob (and also, uni computers with GPUs have preconfigured Windows installed only, no Linux), but is installing Python libraries always such a pain? Am I doing something wrong? Installing via Anaconda felt like cheating, tbh.6 -

Sometimes, I really fucking hate Windows.
Having trialled Linux for a week on a spare HDD, I wanted to move to a proper dual boot with Windows on my SSD, and I decided I may as well downgrade to Windows 7 at the same time (10 had started to really annoy me).
Booting into the initial USB yielded an unresponsive mouse and keyboard. Hmm, not a great start. Turns out the Windows install USB doesn't like the rear USB ports or the wireless mouse. Strange but plugged in a spare USB mouse into the front and could install Windows.
This install was very unhappy about not having SP1 - to the point where I couldn't even install the network drivers so I could download SP1. Fine, I just downloaded an ISO with SP1 on my Mac.
Then I discovered that you can only really make a Windows USB with Windows. But I've just removed both my Windows and Linux partitions so I can reinstall them ...
After hours of searching and trying to create a bootable USB on my Mac, I finally give up and install a trial of Parallels. So I ended up using the same ISO to install a VM of Windows on my Mac, so I can create a bootable USB, so I can install Windows on my desktop. Well done Microsoft ...
And then I needed to install various drivers for the install to be even remotely useable.
To top it all off: Linux just worked. The keyboard and wireless mouse worked when installing. I didn't need to do any additional set up to be able to use it all. It can even use all 3 monitors, rather than just the 2 that Windows recognises for some bizarre reason.
Thanks to Windows being special, I've lost a day of productivity 😡16 -
So excited! My brand new drive finally shows up in the mail today so I naturally want to install it right away.

The client in my previous rant asked me to overhaul their whole internet radio system in three days.

Oh, and every software install needs the network admin's permission.....which won't be here until end of next week.

Well well well.
Story time.
Since we are working from home for the past 4 months, I finally decided to install a Microsoft SQL server on my home server. (Mostly was using Azure)
My server is running Windows Server 2012 R2.
Tried installing SQL 2019 : fail, 2016 : Fail, 2012 : Fail. Some obscure message about some DLLs not being at right version. (And a warning that it is no recommended to install SQL server on domain controller, but I know, it is my home setup, not roduction)
“Ok fine, I’ll install it on my PC instead”. Windows 10 PC. NOPE. “Cannot install on a compressed drive”. Welp, wtf ? (Of course you cannot select destination install folder, I could’ve put it on another drive).
So here I am. Working 100% on Windows, installed Ubuntu server 20 LTS in Hyper-V, Installed Microsoft SQL server on it (BTW, install is very easy compared to windows). And that shit is working. And new “Terminal” app does support SSH out of box, no need to add Putty !
So as a Windows user, I needed Linux to make Microsoft SQL techno work.
Nothing will ever surprise me anymore. (BTW it’s fucking fast. I like SQL server on Linux)2 -

A word of advice to any new Arch user: don't use lxdm for your display manager. It's utter shit. The package hijacks the symlink of any other DM when you install it, and it refocuses the DM on a 5 second loop while it's running, making it a pain in the ass to use a VT. LightDM was broken temporarily so I had to install it, but frankly, I don't ever want to touch thiis piece of software again.4

How to install windows, when there is no network boot support, no USB and you are on Linux?
I did it through vmware, just ran using the current hdd.2 -
How often does this happen to you?
Hmm I need to install the nodemon package, ok so I enter:
npm install -g nodemon
Result:
npm WARN

I then wonder why would it not work??? Then after looking at the errors I realise ohh:
sudo npm install -g nodemon
This literally happens to me almost every single time I install a package.8 -
I'm sick of people who don't care about their job.
I'm attending an app design course and there's this guy, sitting near me, who doesn't care at all about what the teacher explains. Instead he sits and uses the very fast connection of the school to download some useless shit or to manage his shitty web site. Today he missed everything about JSP in order to download ubuntu, install it on his external hdd, install vmware on it and download and install a OSX image for it. And we are paid 1.66 euros per hour (for lunch and gasoline).

I had a relative that used to come to our house to study because her home was kinda far and also because we had a computer .
She was studying computer science at the time and I was only 13-14 years old. One day she came with 3 CDs of red hat. I asked her about it and she told me it's something like windows. My reaction was wow it must be something huge because I knew at the windows XP was only the size of one CD .
My relation with computers was only to play games and some music that's why I couldn't hold myself not to install it. I fucked my computer endless times, It was like playing puzzles let's try this option and then switch to another... It took me like 4 days to install and I was really impressed with it you know seeing the terminal and stuff. Weeks later I switched back to Windows because I couldn't install my games and play mp3 files (require to install some libraries and I had no internet).
Fast forward 8 years later and I was studying linux system for CS degree and guess what? I was the major in class because I knew about many stuff like partition systems (ext2, swap..) and how to install linux on a computer...
This was my feeling 😎 at class. -

I'm trying to install ubuntu server 19.04 on a machine that also has windows 10 on it. The SSD is already split into two parts, one is an ntfs partition for windows and the other is free space with no partition. That's where I want to install the server, but the installer doesn't seem to be aware of the windows partition and I don't want to accidentally format it, overwrite it or make it unbootable.

I've been wondering about renting a new VPS to get all my websites sorted out again. I am tired of shared hosting and I am able to manage it as I've been in the past.
With so many great people here, I was trying to put together some of the best practices and resources on how to handle the setup and configuration of a new machine, and I hope this post may help someone while trying to gather the best know-how in the comments. Don't be scared by the lengthy post, please.
The following tips are mainly from @Condor, @Noob, @Linuxxx and some other were gathered in the webz. Thanks for @Linux for recommending me Vultr VPS. I would appreciate further feedback from the community on how to improve this and/or change anything that may seem incorrect or should be done in better way.
1. Clean install CentOS 7 or Ubuntu (I am used to both, do you recommend more? Why?)
2. Install existing updates
3. Disable root login
4. Disable password for ssh
5. RSA key login with strong passwords/passphrases
6. Set correct locale and correct timezone (if different from default)
7. Close all ports
8. Disable and delete unneeded services
9. Install CSF
10. Install knockd (is it worth it at all? Isn't it security through obscurity?)
11. Install Fail2Ban (worth to install side by side with CSF? If not, why?)
12. Install ufw firewall (or keep with CSF/Fail2Ban? Why?)
13. Install rkhunter
14. Install anti-rootkit software (side by side with rkhunter?) (SELinux or AppArmor? Why?)
15. Enable Nginx/CSF rate limiting against SYN attacks
16. For a server to be public, is an IDS / IPS recommended? If so, which and why?
17. Log Injection Attacks in Application Layer - I should keep an eye on them. Is there any tool to help scanning?
If I want to have a server that serves multiple websites, would you add/change anything to the following?
18. Install Docker and manage separate instances with a Dockerfile powered base image with the following? Or should I keep all the servers in one main installation?
19. Install Nginx
20. Install PHP-FPM
21. Install PHP7
22. Install Memcached
23. Install MariaDB
24. Install phpMyAdmin (On specific port? Any recommendations here?)
I am sorry if this is somewhat lengthy, but I hope it may get better and be a good starting guide for a new server setup (eventually become a repo). Feel free to contribute in the comments.24 -
Just wanted to make a clean install on my iMac. What could possibly go wrong?!
Cleaning the hard disk was interrupted by a process running (kextcache). Catalina wouldn't install ("Incomplete systen on target device". Dropping the terminal I could somehow force unmounting and wipe the disk. Had a BSOD in between. Catalina would still not install ("Failed to install pre boot volume"). Later erasing the disk got blocked by the kernel itself. Felt like trouble and it was: Next time I was greeted with a blinking folder containing a questionmark instead of the bitten Apple.
Last resort: Internet recovery. Installing El Capitan was said to take 7 hours so I took a USB time machine backup of latest Catalina. Installed it, but on reboot it get's stuck when progress bar is at 100%. But at least I've a working recovery again. Yeah, progress!5 -

I don't know if my Ubuntu system is on high or anything, but I realized that if you remove a package, you also lose your ability to install it again.
For example, when I remove a package called `dmd`, and search it, it just shows the package `dmd` without any description, with the tag `residual-config`. And if I try to install it, it will split an error back to me, says that the package `dmd` doesn't have any release candidate. And if I `purge` it, it will magically vanish when I search it, and install it will just say `No apt package "dmd"`.5 -

I see an app in googleplaystore then install it and use it with no problem yesterday then uninstall it.
Then today, search it via app not found. And when search via web it says "not available for your country".
Then one of my friend give me direct link to the app.
Voila!! I can install it!
Why google playstore work like this? Is it drunk or what?1 -
