I'm happy the announce the official devRant bug/feature suggestion tracker, now on GitHub!
It just went live, and you can find it here: https://github.com/devRant/devRant
Going forward, please use that issue tracker for all bug reports and feature suggestions. We decided to move bugs/features reports to GitHub because we've had a lot of people tell us they'd prefer that method since it makes tracking issues easier, and we also think it will improve searchability and maintainability of current bugs and feature suggestions.
Since we're starting from scratch with it, if there's a bug/feature that you're interested in submitting, and it's not already there, then please go ahead and add it! Even if it's been suggested before in a rant, we want to get them in the GitHub issue tracker, so please add it there too.
Feel free to let me know if you have any questions, and we hope this new method makes it easier to see what bugs we're working on fixing and makes it easier to see and discuss possible new features!46 -
Client: we need you to give us access to the code ASAP. We don't like this black box approach.
Me: You have always had access to the code. It is here on this bitbucket repo and your usernames have admin access.
Client: We want the code moved to our GitHub before EOD.
I check out how to move repos over and it's fairly easy.
Me: just give me access to create a repo on your GitHub account and you can have the code moved over.
Client: Sorry it's late in the day and we stepped out to get drinks. (It was 2:30 pm). Not sure why you think there is a rush on this, we'll handle it first thing next week.
Me: WTF14 -
Oh for crying out loud, Github is stopping with the term 'master' due to its 'negative association'.
Can we please not pull everything out of goddamn context and not be a fucking offended special snowflake with ANYTHING that could potentially be thought of in a way that could be associated with slavery?!
If we're gonna do it like this I want to ask people of color not to use white/light themed websites/backgrounds.173 -
I use BitBucket, not GitHub, but I can't add it to my profile because the repo section only accepts GitHub.10

I just got a mail from a software company in Denmark that they wanted to hire, because they "analyzed my open source GitHub contributions" and they think I'd be a good Backend Engineer using Java.
What they don't seem to realise is that the only thing I use GitHub for is college projects and 2 Minecraft mods, that I'm only 17 years old and not really in a position to move from the Netherlands to Denmark...13 -

HR people working in tech companies, let's talk about them...
*phone rings and I pick up*
HR Lady: Hi, this is [name] from [company]. I'm calling you regarding your application you submitted [some date 2 months ago!].
Me: *realizing that I've applied 2 freaking months ago* Hmmm OK....
HR Lady: Yes, well, we asked for your GitHub account, but you seem to have forgotten to provide it.
Me: *open up the email and see that I've sent them my GitLab account* Well, I have the email right here and I did send you a git account. I mean, it's not GitHub specifically but it's a GitLab account, pretty much the same thing, you should be good with that.
HR Lady: OK, let me put you on hold for a minute.
*2-3 minutes passes*
HR Lady: Hi sir, I've asked my colleague [which I suppose is another HR] and he told me that they're not the same thing, we cannot proceed until you give us the right link, you need to send us a link to your GitHub account.
Me: I mean, they aren't the SAME EXACT thing, but both companies provide essentially the same service, it's like Messenger and WhatsApp. Look, I'm pretty sure that if you give this to another programmer they'll be fine.
HR Lady: No, Messenger and WhatsApp aren't the same thing. Sir, please stay polite. We need a GitHub account not a GitLab account.
Me: *mumbling* Oh boy.... M'am, it's OK, I don't need the job anyway, I've found something. Two months is a long time and I needed something quickly. Thank you, have a good day.6 -
Unpopular opinion about Microsoft buying GitHub.
Just putting it out there that when you made your github repos you did so under their privacy policy and terms and will be protected under those in the future, and that both GitHub and Microsoft are corporations with the goals of making money.
Are people seriously mad that their code has gone from one capitalist corporation to another, with no foreseeable change in privacy or data policy? I have respect for those that switched to self hosted long ago since that's going from corporate to private, but if you throw away the UX and community GitHub has developed because a multinational corporation (with so many branches, products and divisions, which happens to have a few products you don't like) will soon own it, are you actually making a rational, guided decision?
Also just throwing it out there that GitLab is also a company. They've also had issues with keeping data intact in the past. They do, however, have free private repos (although I can't ever trust someone who gives me "free" privacy) as well as builtin CI. There are some definite upsides to it, although the UX has a ton of differences. If you're expecting the same dashboard and workflow you've used on GitHub, don't, GitLab has cool features but the bells and whistles aren't the exact same.
If you're switching to GitLab solely because of Microsoft, step back and think, regardless of how popular it might make you to hate Microsoft, is it really worth changing your development ecosystem to go from one corporate entity to another solely because you don't like the company?
I use GitLab and GitBub as well as Bitbucket and selfhosted git on a daily basis. They each have their upsides and downsides; but I think switching from one to the other solely because of Microsoft is not only totally irrational, but really makes light of/disrespects the amazing tools and UX the teams behind each one have carefully developed. Pick your Git hosting based on features and what works out for your use case, not because of which corporate overlord has their name plastered on it.
(Also just throwing it out there that lots of devs love VS Code, and that's Microsoft owned too... They did also build and pioneer a bunch of really cool shit for devs including Typescript so it's not like they're evil or incapable in any sense?)11 -
This is not really a rant, but...dude.
I was browsing github for a suitable library when i found a test repo of someone. A script inside and at the top he wrote his authentication token. I first thought it was a placeholder or an example or a test he used. No. I entered the token and could control his instance of the app. I sent him a message to disable this token.8 -

Had an interview this morning..
Interviewer - have you used github?
Me - yes
Intw - so, you have a profile on github?
Me - yes (** in mind, I don't think github will allow me without that **)
Intw - how many commits have you done?
Me - ** what kinda qust is this ** well,... Yeah... Umm.. A lot! 🙄
Intw - how much is a lot for you?
Me - umm... Well... A lot lot... So many... I mean a lot of... **Long pause** .... You see, I'm a commitment type of guy. ** Wtf did i just say?**
Intw - Whattt!! Then he laughed.
... and I used to think that my days of embarrassing interviews are over. I'm not going to that company doesn't matter what happens. Shitt 😐10 -
PHP sucks balls,
It takes forever to do anything, it is so messy it feels like walking through a massive pile of shit!
Ok good I have your attention and that ++ 😇
But no this is not that kind of rant, quite the opposite.
In 70 lines of php shit as some people would call it, I am currently scrapping GitHub pages with ebook collections and with some minor regex pulling PDFs out and saving them to file.29 -

So today I receive 23 emails on DMCA takedown notice from last year project (which is a personal project). I asked Github why they think it is violating their policy, they told me they receive tonnes of complaints from a company, they shared the chat and that's the ex-company that fired me.
Even the project is not related to them, they seem to want to "Cancel" me on Github. Bro this is Github, not Twitter! Cancel culture does not work here.
Some of my IoT projects they flag it In Github, which I believe my ex-company they don't do any IOT projects. How the fuck it is violating their so called "code nondisclosure"?24 -
Okay so my co-workers explains why they give me the title "GitHub Maid":
Basically most of the time the engineering didn't have the time to scroll through issues, and that includes me, so a lot of this stuff does not get triaged properly when reported. When I stumbled on the tracker, I knew I had to do something, so I sorted and sorted and managed the tickets by my own.
So being a "GitHub Maid" is not something to be embarrassed about after all, in fact, I think the dev team owed me a lot because the issue tracker is more organized, and the issues are getting triaged and assigned properly now compared before.
So if they call you like something similar, be proud of it because some developers wouldn't even bother to tidy up issue tracking.12 -
A user opened an issue on Github saying something doesn't compile. Fair enough, it didn't.
Another user comments saying "I have the exact same issue but after the program launches"
Bitch no, that's not the same issue. Not at all.4 -
I'm not sure if my in-laws know me really well, or if they are secretly plugged into Github and are making a comment on my code.4

Today I checked out a Repo on Github to help a friend.
Holy shit is this code crap!
Basically one single method contains the whole logic.
637 LINES OF PURE AND UTTER DOGSHIT.
SIXHUNDREDTHIRTYSEVEN LINES!
ONE SINGLE UGLY METHOD.
If I have enough time and energy, I will probably create a PR in 2021.
Some people... wtf.
(not my friend's code, he just uses the program)
(Edit: I had to remove the rant and censor names in the image)25 -
They say developers don't have social lives...
Over one half of my total commits on GitHub have been from just Fridays and Saturdays...
I mean, I guess they're not wrong.4 -
To IT: I can no longer clone GitHub repos from the command line.
From IT… Hello DevOps engineer…. You’re no longer allowed to use port 22. It’s not safe. All traffic must be port 443.
Really!?8 -
"Microsoft should not need to buy github, the platform itself should be ran by a non profit org like wikipedia or linux."
Add a herp a derp at the end. It will probably make it sound less stupid or hypocritical.
Seriously though, how many of you mecos actually pay for shit? Eh? How many of you donate to your fav Linux distros or web platforms?
Lets say that the entire devrant base did :) pretty sweet eh? There are still 28 million developers on fucking github.....now how many of those contribute to help account for server costs etc? How many actually use private paid repos etc?
And without adds and shit? This ain't Facebook!!
It makes sense. I am glad they did... and fuck you I would too.
I will see what happens before I put on my (disgusting) Richard Stallman Hat.25 -
When you're making a GitHub students account:
"We'll email you in a few weeks"
5 seconds later, you'll recieve an email:
"Hey <username>, we have some awesome news
We've upgraded you to a plan with unlimited free private repositories, which will be free for the next two years."
GitHub, I don't think you know what weeks are, lmao12 -
(I wrote most of this as a comment in reply about Microsoft buying GitHub on another rant but decided to move it here because it is rant worthy. Also, no, I'm not a Microsoft employee nor do I have any Microsoft stock).
Microsoft buying GitHub makes sense. They contribute more to the open source community on GitHub than any other company. (Side note, they also contribute/have contributed to the Linux Kernel).
Steve Ballmer isn't running the show anymore. Because of that, we have awesome things like:
* Visual Studio Code - Completely free and powerful light weight IDE for coding in just about any script or language. This IDE is also open source, hosted on GitHub. It can be installed on Win/Mac/Linux.
* Visual Studio Community Edition: fully featured flagship IDE free for solo developers and students, can be installed on Win/Mac.
* Fully featured Sql Server running in a Docker container.
* .Net Core, which can be compiled to native binaries of Windows, MacOS AND Linux. You can't even do that with Java, you have to first have the JVM installed in order to run any kind of Java code on any of those operating systems. .Net Core is also an absolutely beautiful framework with so many features at your disposal.
...and more.
Yes, they've done bonehead things in the past but who/which company hasn't. Yes, they have Cortana. Yes, they force Bing on you when searching with Cortana (does anyone actually regularly use Cortana? Or Bing?). Yes, their operating system costs money. Yes, their malware-style Upgrade-to-Windows-10 tactics were evil and they admitted such. Yes, they brought ads and other unfortunate things to Skype. I'd be lying if I said I wasn't concerned about that Skype bit translating over into GitHub. BUT, the fact that so many of their employees use GitHub daily means they are dogfooding the platform, which is a positive thing.
Despite the flaws, from the perspective of a software engineer they really should be given a lot of credit for all these new directions they are moving in now. They directly aim to help and contribute to the developer community. Plus, Windows 10 is finally getting a dark theme! haha.
I think Microsoft buying GitHub makes a lot of sense. Of course do what you want about it, feel how you want about it, but casting the same ol' shade at them for anything they do seems a bit like automatic reflex more than anything else.
I'm bracing myself for the impending wave of angry hornets from the nest I just kicked. In all seriousness though, I welcome discussion on the topic even if you feel differently than I do. I'm not saying there's no reason to dislike them, just saying there are lots of new reasons to hate them less and/or appreciate what they are doing now.19 -

// devRant unofficial UWP update (v1.5.6)
//
Hi!
A new update for Windows 10 users is in certification right now (will be available in a few hours/days), with the new feature you could see a few days ago on the official client.
But the main reason of this post is that I've seen the success of the official Issue Tracker created in August by @dfox and @trogus on GitHub.
For this reason I decided to do the same for the unofficial client.
Feel free to post bugs reports (I prefer this method instead of emails) and requests of features (even if not available in the official client) you would like to see.
https://github.com/JakubSteplowski/...
Complete changelog of v1.5.6:
- Added new 'post type' selector for easier classification of rant types in the future;
- Added Official devRant unofficial Issue Tracker on GitHub;
- Added Feedback page with link to GitHub Issue Tracker repo;
- Added black theme... no, wait... already there.
- Minor UI improvements;
- Minor back-end improvements;
I hope to see a lot of interesting feature requests I will enjoy to implement to make the UWP client always the best for you, Windows community. 😁18 -

I was working as a contractor for a client who just got enough funding to hire a full-time dev. I lovingly referred to him as "Mr. Koolaid" because he was obsessed with whatever the newest hotness was and cried constantly about how the 3-year-old code-base didn't use The Next Big Thing(tm). This was my first interaction with him:
Mr. Koolaid: I'd like access to the github repository. My username is xxxx.
Me: We currently aren't hosting the code on github. If you send me your public ssh key, I'll get you access to the private server.
Mr. Koolaid: I'd like to access the github repository.
Me: It's not on github; send me your public key and I'll get you access.
Mr. Koolaid: Can we skype real quick? You don't need my public key to grant me access to the github repo.
*Mr. Koolaid proceeds to forward me github's documentation on adding users to an organization and the documentation for adding users to a private repo. The email is written in a very passive-aggressive tone.*

I feel bad when people in my uni, use my github repo for entire projects and not star the repo or tell thanks :(3

GitHub desktop is available for Mac and Windows and not for Linux. I feel this is so wrong after their entire shit is build around open source.

Sometimes I think back to all the funny shit that happened and how simple stuff fucks everyone
- tired Database engineer deleting (not dropping, literally rm -rf) the database files on the wrong server
- Microsoft delivering viruses through updates
- Pissed and stubborn dev deleting his one line library repo which does something like removing a char left side of string fucking an unmeasurable amount of other projects
- Adobe getting hacked and exposed for storing passwords in plain texts
- a doubled line causing a bug called heartbleed in a fuckton of webservers
- a Tutorial Company getting kicked from github because their repo got so big github staff had to maintain the repo manually
- and an old one: bad code crashed a space shuttle16 -
Me: Baby, I can't do what you want me to because I need to learn how to use Github and it is taking longer than it should.
Girlfriend: Don't feel bad, maybe you're just not ready to commit yet.
Me: Laugh and die a little inside because I understand the pun but not the program.5 -
I’m reluctant to comment on the github / Microsoft thing because to be honest, the way a lot of people are reacting to it is just completely retarded, and it’s had far too much airtime.
Anyway... if you’re gonna leave GitHub because they’ve been acquired by Microsoft, then just shut up and leave. No one gives a fuck. Least of all anyone at Microsoft, because you’re probably not paying for anything there anyway.
Just fucking go to bitbucket or gitlab already... however I bet the vast majority don’t end up leaving.3 -
To be truly honest I am not going to move from GitHub and only hope I have is that Microsoft adds more to the already great GitHub student package4
-
I am at a point in my life where I just debugged for a solid 30 mins why I wasn't able to clone a repository from github. Long, story short I was trying to clone from github.con not .com; rough Monday2

Currently getting into Machine Learning and working on a joke-project to identify the main programming language of GitHub repositories based on commit messages. For half of the commits, the language is predicted correctly out of 53 possible languages. Which is not too bad given the fact that I have no clue what I'm doing...9

Dear people who think Microsoft buying GitHub is fine because Microsoft is more supportive of open source than before.
Here's the facts.
1) Microsoft is a large tech company investing in many things. That's a fact.
2) If Microsoft were to exploit GitHub, it would be a benefit to other departments in Microsoft. This is also a fact.
(For example, if tomorrow GitHub was tied to azure or some annoying shit like that.)
3) If such exploitation occurs, it will most likely be to the detriment of the free community of developers. This is a highly probable outcome.
4) The only question now is this.
"Does Microsoft care about open source enough to cut down on potential profit."
The answer of any sane, unbiased individual had to be no.
This is why people leave GitHub today. It is NOT because some childish hatred for Microsoft. In fact, I would've personally moved out of GitHub if "any" other large tech company had bought it, thereby compromising it's neutrality.
Edit: spelling20 -
As a Java developer, I'm disappointed that GitHub does not offer free protected and package-protected repos.4

Not really a rant but I'm just happy so I must share it.
Two days ago I uploaded a new project on github and today when I woke up I saw it on github trending! Only the C# section though, but still.
Feels weird as I'm usually not upload anything and the ones I have usually sit around 5-20 stars forever.3 -

Our company today disallowed the use of GitKraken to all developers. Reason? They wanted to save money. When I told them that software is free, they responded with , “No, not in any way! All developers can use GitHub Actions instead”.
I don’t think they know what GitKraken nor GitHub Actions is, nor that GitKraken is free.
Not that I like GitKraken, but I don’t want to limit other developers use of it if they like it.
Meanwhile, we have been running no less than four kubernetes clusters, of which only one is in use…8 -

Working on my Lenovo x1 carbon. Akku warning "less then 6%" appears. No problem, I will connect the cable just after I finished this function... "Will shutdown in a view moments" message appears. Ok, I connect the cable. Nothing happens. Maybe power adapter is broken or something more worst. Panic. Try to commit and push as fast as I can (around 2000 LOC from today, made big changes on my project today). While pushing to github laptop powers off. Fuck. Check github on smartphone to see if commits had been pushed. No. I do not have a power adapter for replacement. FML.4

Not usually a person to rant about spacing and conventions but this is great.
4 devs, all using IntelliJ. Now IntelliJ auto-changes tabs to spaces which is nice, and GitHub doesn’t really care as long as the spacing is consistent. Now here is the fun part: 2 devs have 4 spaces per tab, 1 has 3 spaces, 1 has 5 spaces.
GitHub merge conflicts everyWHERE.
And yes it isn’t the old 2 vs 4 spaces. It’s 3 vs 4 vs 5 somehow6 -

This new junior dev was going pretty well, learning pretty fast and working pretty fast from when I talked to them, but I wasn't seeing his changes up on GitHub.
Me: Hey have you finished *feature X*
Junior: Oh yeah a few days ago.
Me: Why aren't your changes up on GitHub?
Junior: Sorry, my bad, im not used to pushing stuff during the development since i was used to do all of my stuff on my own
(No kidding!)
Me: ok then push them
Junior: Emmm... I don't think I should... I kinda already started working on *feature Y* so it's full of bugs...

I'm going to teach web dev at a coding school in a few months. In the teaching plan, students have to learn git. But we are told explicitly to only teach using github desktop and not the command line because it puts students off.

Dear ISP,
Thank your for throttling my internet right in the middle of a hurricane! Now not only does Netflix not work and GitHub take forever, but I can't even get live weather updates. Time to code using cave paintings I guess till the power goes out.3 -
Why not to use gitlab:
-Runs on ruby which is VERY VERY VERY wasteful in processing power and thus in energy
-It's hosted on azure
Why to stay with github:
-There won't be a lot of change
-It's reliable and this won't change so fast
-It's like admitting defeat towards MS who want to ruin our lives lol27 -

I like, that many code hosting sites are shutting down (Google Code, Codeplex). This does not mean those sites are bad.
The ones I like and use are GitHub, GitLab, Bitbucket (and most personal ones like Gogs or GitLab CE).
Here is my list of the sites I don't like:
- Sourceforge
- SF
- sf.net
- sourceforge.net8 -
Woah. I just realized that I have 875 followers on GitHub. 😍
I know it's not much compared to the legends, but it's a lot for me.

I hate it when I pick a library that seems popular, has a ton of stars on GitHub, a ton of downloads, used seemingly everywhere, only to find out months later that it's SHIT. I found bugs that made me doubt anyone is actually using this fucking thing. Your GitHub stars mean nothing.
So now it's either rewriting the entire codebase to a different library, or fixing it. Serves me right for not checking the unresolved issues first.7 -
I tried every possible dating app but could not find a girlfriend.
One of my good friends always had one, he used to say that they share a lot of text every day.
So I asked where did you guys even meet?
Oh on GitHub! he said

Yo...wtf
A node package, event-stream. Was infected. Basically, the exploit seems to steal data from mining cryptocurrencies. What was amazing was the github repo owner's attitude about it. I would normally agree with it not being his issue anymore if it weren't because:
1. The pendejo did not archive the repo to indicate that he is free of fault and not his anymore.
2. You can't just entrust a fucking software lib to any pendejo that asks.
3. Eat a dick nigga
Peace out

Today marks the first day i needed to use a fork of a Github repo, because it just didn't contain a very basic feature i needed. The PR which fixes it has been open for months without a comment on why it's not merged.
I mean i'm glad i found a solution at the end, but goddamn it's so sad when a popular repo is not maintained well.3 -
I have the bad habit of programming without initializing a Github repo or by the time I upload it to Github I’m either done or close to done with it.
It’s not necessarily a terrible thing it’s just a pet peeve of mine.6 -
I opened an issue on a repo telling the owner that placing a "test passing" badge on the readme but not having other tests than an "ExampleTest" and no tests of the actual functionality is bad practice and what he thinks about updating the readme.
The result was a deletion (not close) of the issue and a ban from contributing (issues, PRs) on any of his projects.
And it was not some small "ten persons use this" project but a large boilerplate project with 2.4k github stars and over 800 forks. You would expect a little bit more professionalism of someone with that popularity.4 -
I finally got to releasing a devRant client for Android!
Note that many features are still missing but will be comming soon.
Main features (but not limited to :) are
fresh UI w. themes
animation of @SIMMORSAL (devRantNative)
basic code highlighter (alpha)
landscape + resizeable without breaking
userinfo in feed (optional)

Not a rant, in contrary.
When you post a suggestion on reactjs github and it is approved almost immediately.
You need to appreciate the small things.3 -
pushing sensitive data to GitHub repo...not realising for days...and then going through the painful process of removing it again 😑4

Hey GitHub Idiot No Need To Write Capitalized Issue Requests Like This It Makes You Look Incompetent We Are Not Working In .NET Here On GitHub

Have anyone felt this before?

WHY THE FUCK DID MICROSOFT INSTALL A NEW KEYBOARD LAYOUT AFTER THE LAST WINDOWS 10 UPDATE AND IT IS NOT POSSIBLE TO REMOVE IT?! fuck it for fucks sake5

Fuck, I keep missing PRs and comments, because github doesn't notify if you're not directly tagged, is there some better way to get notified about things like new PR on your repos or generally notifications?12

This whole Microsoft & GitHub thing is how it begins:
1) Embrace
oh it's really cool, Microsoft is adding some cool features we've been missing for a while, GitHub is still great
2) Extend
Alright, there's this new `msgit` that has some really cool features for rebasing and merge conflicts, I won't need to worry about fucking up my git history
3) Extinguish
`msgit` is not compatible with `git` and GitHub requires us to use it, but what can we do, all our code and build triggers are set up..
They are doing the same thing to JavaScript with TypeScript and stopped the development of the Internet for ~10 years...
I don't want to paint dark clouds, but I heard this theory at work and it makes sense that Ms would take it in a direction where people are locked in to their ecosystem. It won't happen immediately, but all signs point to this.

Spent the whole damn weekend trying to migrate from old pc xampp to clone of the vps by pushing pulling from github... It's a nightmare. Finally I gave up, installed xampp on the new pc as well, pulled all the garbage there and of course it didn't worked, same errors... The solution... some files were not pushed to github.. I really think about to move to some 3rd world country, and become tomato farmer instead.2

I wanted to create a GitHub organization called my last name. Since I have a pretty uncommon lastname, I was quite confident that it would not be taken. Turns out it is... And when was that user created who has taken my name? Yesterday...6

DevFolio
This is a simple responsive portfolio website template. You can use it and make it yours by changing things and colours to your style and liking! I made it with a lot of hard work, love and of course with code :) I'm not a professional coder, but I tried my best to make it look cool and yet still keep it simple.
you can view the Github repo at https://github.com/achaljhawar/...5 -
Still can't find a decent node MVC framework. Thought I'd list out all my requirments and what I'd like.
Turned into a readme of me moaning about current frameworks. Not sure I want this on github

Got an email today from a random person asking for help on using a thing I have in GitHub. Even though it's not at all a big deal, made me feel so proud :)
On the other hand, every day I work on software responsible for thousands of people a day (not a big deal, but still something that affects thousands per day) and I feel meh about that...
Brains are weird :)1 -
Dev nightmares :
- Not finding bug fix on stackoverflow/GitHub .
- Losing code that hasn't been pushed to GitHub.
- Dealing with an unclean and inconsistent database.
- Installing Node Dependencies.
- Resolving CORS and 500s.
- Training a Linear Regression Model with 700 epochs on an entry-level Laptop.
Keep appending to this list.

Are my rants supposed to be well documented, too? Or like submitted as if it’s a GitHub issue, where I shall add details such as what’s not working, how do you expect it to work, steps to replicate the bug, screenshots?
Why tf am I even overthinking this?! Lmao8 -
I noticed the main dogecoin repo was one star short of a significant milestone. Is it odd to feel honoured to be their 2000th?

Why not release the devrant (mobile+web) client on github (and maybe gitlab for people that would actually contribute but are special about the usage of github) so people could contribute to it, leading to faster progress? I thought about it now for a bit and couldn't see any problems with that, since the current apk can be anyway unpacked via freely available tools (appcelerator doesn't make it too hard either anyway 😕) and the website/api isn't any secret either (see the 4000 clients getting patched together out of zombie like api calls)21

devrant rant
Every rant is SEO friendly.

Today, a guy contacted me on upwork to fix his iOS game which was crashing.
So I asked him to put it on github so I can clone it and push the fixes.
For some reason he said it was not possible for him to put it on github,so he uploaded it on Dropbox and sent me the link.
How the fuck am I supposed to fix that 700mb project and send it back ? Again upload it on some cloud ?

what is the purpose of a degree?
what value does it convey?
isnt it better if you just show all the work and projects youve done on github as proof of what kind of knowledge do you actually have? plus where you worked before on linkedin? thats not enough, right? a paper needs to decide how much knowledge you have? is that it?10 -
This moment you find a library/software on GitHub which actually does exactly what you looked for/tried to implement by yourself... Then you notice the last commit was in 2010 and there are 3000 open issues... Not a single one contains a response... the typical github repository...5

Is it real that github are changing master to main? Does this mean I need to call my dungeon master main now? She’s not going to be happy...6

!dev Job hunting is so exhausting. Nowadays it's not enough to have two degrees and some certificates. No, you have to 'prove' your worth by also showing really complex, enterprise-level projects you made on GitHub. Yes, why don't you make it more difficult to find a job. lol3

Because everyone else is ranting about this too:
I'm not afraid of Microsoft wanting to monetize everything or that they will restrict site access to Microsoft Edge only. What I am afraid of is that they change the privacy policy.
Who knows what they are up to?
I hope GitHub is awesome enough to decline the offer.... Let's see.13 -
Last week,my friend asked me to fork and pull request on his github repository so that he could review my changes and merge them,I had included some more exciting features in his app but till now he has not merged my request, instead he just copied the changes I made in his repo into his repo manually and updated his project, still he has not merged my pull request!!
That guy is a genius!7 -
TL;DR: When picking vendors to outsource work to, vet them really well.
Backstory:
Got a large redesign project that involves rebuilding a website's main navigation (accessibility reasons).
Project is too big just for our dev team to handle with our workload so we got to bring a 3rd party vendor to help us. We do this often so no big deal.
But, this time the twist was Senior Management already had retained hours with a dev shop so they want us to use them for project. Okay...
It begins:
Have our scope / discovery meeting about the changes and our expected DevOps workflow.
Devs work Local and push changes to our Github, that kicks off the build and we test on Dev, then it goes to Staging for more testing & PM review. Once ready we can push to prod, or whenever needed. All is agreed, everyone was happy.
Emailed the vendors' project manager to ask for their devs Github accounts so we can add them to the project. Got no reply for 3 days.
4th day, I get back "Who sets up the Github accounts?"
fuck me. they've never used Github before but in our scope meeting 4 days ago you said Github was fine...??
Whatever, fuck it. I'll make the accounts and add them.
Added 4 devs to the repo and setup new branch. 40min later get an email that they can't setup dev environment now, the dev doesn't know how to setup our CMS locally, "not working for some reason."
So, they ask for permission to develop on our STAGING server.. "because it's already setup"... they want to actively dev on our staging where we get PM/Senior Management approvals?
We have dev, staging, production instances and you want to dev in staging, not dev?... nay nay good sir.
This is whom senior management wants us to use, already paid for via retainer no less. They are a major dev shop and they're useless...
😢😭
Cant wait for today's progress checkup meeting. 😐😐

Unlimited power to do anything with any electronic devices.

I think companies are not going more and more woke but they are appeasing to the crybabies so their profits won’t diminish in the long term.
So they are doing something worse, knowing the demands of these highly offended crowd are bullshit but they prefer to look like they agree with them, so some retard do not start a twitter thread about how github supports slavery by naming default branch master.
In the meantime, this appeasement emboldens and make those children bolder demands, like a baby wailing inside a mall to force parents to buy a candy.12 -
Notifications are not being sent from github to slack. Ok. Looks like that legacy slack github integration that has been telling us its no longer supported for months has finally been deactivated.
Fine. I'll cave and upgrade all 45 of our repos to the new integration.
Thousands of clicks later, finally done.
*but wait*
"Notifications still don't work?"
That's when I saw this notice on github.

So at our company, we use Google Sheets to for to coordinate everything, from designs to bug reporting to localization decisions, etc... Except for roadmaps, we use Trello for that. I found this very unintuitive and disorganized. Google Sheets GUI, as you all know, was not tailored for development project coordination. It is a spreadsheet creation tool. Pages of document are loosely connected to each other and you often have to keep a link to each of them because each Google Sheets document is isolated from each other by design. Not to mention the constant requests for permission for each document, wasting everybody's time.
I brought up the suggestion to the CEO that we should migrate everything to GitHub because everybody already needed a Github account to pull the latest version of our codebase even if they're not developers themselves. Gihub interface is easier to navigate, there's an Issues tab for bug report, a Wiki tab for designs and a Projects tab for roadmaps, eliminating the need for a separate Trello account. All tabs are organized within each project. This is how I've seen people coordinated with each other on open-source projects, it's a proven, battle-tested model of coordination between different roles in a software project.
The CEO shot down the proposal immediately, reason cited: The design team is not familiar with using the Github website because they've never thought of Github as a website for any role other than developers.
Fast-forward to a recent meeting where the person operating the computer connected to the big TV is struggling to scroll down a 600+ row long spreadsheet trying to find one of the open bugs. At that point, the CEO asked if there's anyway to hide resolved bugs. I immediately brought up Github and received support from our tester (vocal support anyway, other devs might have felt the same but were afraid to speak up). As you all know, Github by default only shows open issues by default, reducing the clutter that would be generated by past closed issues. This is the most obvious solution to the CEO's problem. But this CEO still stubbornly rejected the proposal.
2 lessons to take away from this story:
- Developer seems to be the only role in a development team that is willing to learn new tools for their work. Everybody else just tries to stretch the limit of the tools they already knew even if it meant fitting a square peg into a round hole. Well, I can't speak for testers, out of 2 testers I interacted with, one I never asked her opinion about Github, and the other one was the guy mentioned above. But I do know a pixel artist in the same company having a similar condition. She tries to make pixel arts using Photoshop. Didn't get to talk to her about this because we're not on the same project, but if we were, I'd suggest her use Aseprite, or (at least Pixelorama if the company doesn't want to spend for Aseprite's price tag) for the purpose of drawing pixel arts. Not sure how willing she would be at learning new tools, though.
- Github and other git hosts have a bit of a branding problem. Their names - Github, BitBucket, GitLab, etc... - are evocative of a tool exclusively used by developers, yet their websites have these features that are supposed to be used by different roles other than developers. Issues tabs are used by testers as well as developers. Wiki tabs are used by designers alongside developers. Projects and Insights tabs are used by project managers/product owners. Discussion tabs are used by every roles. Artists can even submit new assets through Pull Requests tabs if the Art Directors know how to use the site interface (Art Directors' job is literally just code review, but for artistic assets). These websites are more than just git hosts. They are straight-up Jira replacement with git hosting as a bonus feature. How can we get that through the head of non-developers so that we don't have to keep 4+ accounts for different websites for the same project?4 -
Best: Spending the summer contributing to one of the widely used tools by pentesters and developers (9k stars on Github)
Worst: Not being able to give enough time to programming because of other stuff -
Spend 3hrs on a coding excersize for a job interview and recieve the following as the reason they are not moving forward
"Coding style and an error"
Ask for a less vague reply and they specify a problem my code not only accounted for but had a comment specifying how it accounted for it and a spelling mistake in my GitHub repository

Not using github and keeping my finished projects somewhere for past 10 years.

Just discovered Roccat Power-Grid!
It's so awesome and useful!
Mapped all Makros I use while programming to it.
I also have some CPU/RAM info and media buttons (play/pause/next/...).
You can even add website buttons. For example for Github or Stackoverflow!
Not sure if it's faster to use it but it's way cooler :)
Check it out!
Just search for it on Google/DuckDuckGo. -
Anyone have any idea why release downloads from GitHub is slow af?!
It is not a network issue on my end.
Any ideas?2 -
Whenever I clone a github repo, the first thing I do is to format the code from tabs to spaces.
Tried not to do it, but the itch is unbearable.4 -
Stackoverflow has got its userfriendliness problems and all, but I still like that whenever I find a question that I have too, that the answer I'm looking for is probably at the top of the answers. If not, I navigate away immediately.
On the other hand, if I find a question on github, there's so much pollution and scrolling that it takes a lot of time to assess whether the answer is there at all.
Also I feel like github is being used à la Stackoverflow more and more, Q&A rather than repo, but I am against this movement! -
*use windows, ms office, vsc, skype probably code in ts, ... *

I'm not a microsoft fan either, but thats the sad truth.1 -
Okay before you read on this is a stupid question!
So the most common response I get when I ask for advice is contribute to open source projects but theres some problems.
> I dont know how to find projects on github or anywhere
> I dont know how or where to start when I actually find a project
> I'm way too intimidated by huge projects like linux, browsers, etc
> I don't know what to add
> I'm too afraid of messing up the project
> my understanding of github its self is very limited and I'm not good at using it. (Which isnt a problem for the open source development but since I'd be using github it is a problem)
Theres always smaller problems too but those should sum it up3 -
Back to using WSL because I suck at installing windows apps on Wine (and that I can't seem to connect to a WiFi with PEAP on Linux that the network admin know how to except on Windows).
So can't exactly rice Windows. I know I can with raindock and all that but its not the same as Linux. So I'm on WSL, installed tmux and wouldn't you know it, I found plenty of dot tmux files on Github.
But alas, its not the same as i3wm but its close.8 -
Why does github have a field in my profile setting where i can set my pronouns? She/her they/them Are you fucking retarded? How can such an intelligent service of github downgrade their intelligence to the level of those mentally ill people? I keep ignoring that mental illness bullshit but now im surprised that even intelligent people are taking it seriously. Anyone who thinks genders.amount > 2 returns true is a mentally sick person in my eyes. Why is this pronouns bullshit even being mainstreamed as normal? Heres my advice: instead of standardizing pronouns as normal, why not send those people to mental asylum hospital and give them some treatment since they desperately need it?12
-
Have a friend who wants to enrich his coding portfolio but is scared of people copying his more serious code if he puts it up on github.
Told him it's all about open source and he could just keep the more casual code up there while giving access to serious projects on request from a company, but it's not very ideal, is it?
What would you tell him?7 -
So ive made some big improvements to skyRant the Android devRant client and the new version is out on Github!

I feel some people are ruining fucking software packages on purpose.
There is a particular editor I'm not going to mention the name of, and when I download it via rpmfusion, part of it that is quite important doesn't work.
when I download it from github it crashes based on an INTERNAL py file not being present that literally was not included in the crap appimage distribution !

Long story short:
Just had several problems with using some drone ci plugins (hugo and sftp). Found issues regarding the problems on GitHub. Issues have been open for several years. Still open. Tried to participate or ask for the state. Got a "no one else got a problem with this". Recoded both plugins. Tested them. Using them now. Source is on GitHub. Posted them as alternatives on drone's discourse. Got flagged as spam.
Nice. Not using Drone again. Searching for an alternative now.
Little extra: I think they banned me from posting GitHub links on their discourse.4 -

Who here remembers dateprog.com? If you don't, it was a dating site for devs and those who like devs. I'm tempted to ressurect the damn thing, although not as a dating site but more of a social network (think GitHub + Tumblr). Anyone else think that'd be a good idea? I'm also thinking this'll be more than just my weekend sorted, haha. It'd have to have chat, code repos, GitHub login, etc... what do you guys think?
Also not planning to invade the territory of devRant I was just wondering if anyone was interested. Maybe even some kind of extension to devRant, as a social coding platform? I'm not sure aha. Welp, anyway if anybody's interested drop a comment! :)5 -
Creating an secure authentication system is not that easy...
Especially if you create it for a community full of devs.
But I think I've found a secure solution.
Maybe some security experts on here could review the code after I'm finished.
Here's the GitHub repo but the auth system is not up yet:

Github has a very cool business model. They launch most of their services for free in public repos and have a pay for using them in private repos. So when people use them and like them in open environment, github get free advertisements for potential customers that might use that in closed environment.
Google also has a similar model with its gsuite, but it has its advertisements business model over it that makes it look bad.
Personally, i like github's model but google gets a bad light for not being privacy focussed, while github is thriving.4 -
I can't entirely remember the code of my own web portfolio that I wrote a few months ago! The code is not even that bad, but I'm just tweaking stuff and building more on top of these ruins. There's a cost to rewriting something from scratch and it's not worth it. I'm using Jekyll and Github pages.1

I've had this idea for some time now. How about a website that gathers some of the most well written open-source code and allows you to easily read it for educational purposes? Everyone says that reading source code can be a great learning tool but directly jumping into github is not very friendly to newcomers. I saw what underscore.js has done with the annotated code link and I think it's great. What do you think?6

Just curious on whether or not to open source something or not...
As some would have seen I'm working on a game engine/framework and putting a lot of effort into the development terminal (lumber camp) and had a fair few people show interest in it so thought I might chuck it on GitHub as I go but I don't want to allow for merging until the main component is at version 1 and stable...
Should I release as I go and not do merging or wait till it is at version 1?4 -

Question: I completed a feature on separate branch. Since I'm not allowed to merge things on the master branch (only pm is allowed to) I open a pull request.
However, PM has decided that he will only accept PRs which can be automatically rebased & merged.
So now i opened my PR and PM says that GitHub complains that the branches cannot be automatically merged.
So I rebase the branch - push and tell him to try again. But the same issue - GitHub won't merge the PR. So I try again - rebase the feature branch onto master which runs me through the same rebase steps as on the last try. I successfully complete this one too and push. But still - GitHub won't swallow the PR.
Anybody an idea what could've went wrong here?6 -
I use google auth for 2FA. Had to factory reset my phone for some reason. Meanwhile, github one day forced me to change my password. I honestly think it is not that bad that github is now acquired by MS...
I ve read various articles that explains MS has saved github from 'extinction due to lack of leadership' ..
As long as they dont affect the base thing and are planning to sell wrappers around github, i think it is a good thing for business..Because i always think that an open source project is more stable , when a leading company makes a lot of money providing its wrapper .. The company would make all steps possible to make sure that github doesnt become obselete ( which it will if MS makes it bloated with its extensions ) Example Redhat for linux..
By seeing many posts here, i only see hatred towards Windows and IE , not fear about MS acquiring github.5 -
GitHub Actions. That is all.
Well, not really. Trying to convert a grunt script which we have packaging our WordPress plugins to be done as a GitHub action instead and I'm about to throw my machine out of the window.5 -
Yes this is about github, no it's not complaining about Microsoft buying it.
Have you noticed Microsoft seems to be buying/working with its competitors on something they failed to do?
MSN inferior Skype
PowerShell inferior to bash
VSTM inferior to github
And if track record continues, github might go down the shutter majorly...3 -
Microsoft is buying GitHub?
Actually, that sounds great. A lot of people here are making it sound like this is the end of the world as we know it, but how do we know that they will make it awful? The Microsoft of today is different than the Microsoft of 2007. The purchase is simply a way to expand their enterprise offerings. I have experimented with Office365, and it is actually really useful. GitHub will be a way to expand that offering to software development companies.
Who knows? We may even get some kind of Azure CI service built directly into GitHub repos?
However, I see why some people are concerned. If they want to move to GitLab, I don't actually blame them a bit. I was already using it before it was cool!
The point of this rant is that we should give Microsoft a chance, and not jump ship right away.3 -
Currently moving all my projects and files up onto GitHub as I prepare to fully embrace Linux and not dual boot anymore as I have been doing for the past couple months. I'm so excited!1

I paint as a hobby and i think I'll go the github way and relabel the black colors as nightly 🤔 and whites as salt 😃 (!?).
Sorry, don't mean to be a racist, i practically didn't differentiate between people based untill i was told in school that we should not differentiate based on color or race 🤣. Everyone was just a human before those lessons.3 -
So my laptop broke recently, and I've been looking for a replacement, but everything is so expensive.
I was thinking of just buying something really lightweight for like 100 - 200 $, then putting linux on it (no gui) and running everything through the terminal. I basically want to be able to work on github projects with, maybe use minimal internet.
Vim + git is all i use for github projects anyways, and lynx would let me do the small amount of internet that i want.
My one concern is that itd be very nice to have a window manager (terminator, i3, etc), not sure exactly how that would work with no gui.
Any thoughts on this setup overall? Or specifically the wm part?12 -
Not a rant: trying to start a GitHub portfolio for future recruiters or companies to see what i have done, I cannot seem to find inspiration on what to do, any ideas or tips?3
-
Why does nobody publish the software design in Github when publishing the code?
I know that theoretically there's no reason, and most have a good read me.md but why not publish the design?3 -
I hope there's a special kind of hell for project leaders / execs that make the decision to take down the documentation for older versions of a software.
I know we should have upgraded a long time ago, but come on. I have no clue what's going on now, and not much to go on either! All the documentation links in the configurations just redirect to the project's github repo, and I sure as hell am not going to read the whole source code just to find the possible logic behind the issue!
Ugh... Days like this frustrate me so much...2 -
Can github (not google) copilot be run on a company server? Or some scaled down version?
I could see this being useful for a version that only parses the code the company wants it to parse. Like an existing codebase. I often find snippets on how to solve something in the existing codebase, but it is usually hit or miss.9 -
I know someone that’s constantly paranoid about being spied on by the government and fears companies stealing his code e.g. github, Microsoft etc.
His solution:
do nothing until we find a secure platform to write code on so that our ‘billion dollar ideas don’t get stolen’
Suffice to say that he’s a very bad coder, not that I’m really that good but compared to him I’m light years ahead.1 -
I was ok with microsoft taking github
idk wich faults is but lately when i try to
$ git pull
it says that is "up to date" wich is cleary not
I checked the repository on their website.
SOOO here i am copying the RAW code from github so i can have the same version of what im working on rn
¯\_(ツ)_/¯8 -
Thanks GitHub, it's not like I didn't have shit I had to do today.
Guess I'll just sit back and wait for the heat dome to kill me.5 -
At home, I use Cursor, which is way better than GitHub Copilot, but at work I can't choose. One thing I particularly hate about GitHub Copilot is the way the chat panel appears in the left sidebar of VS Code, on top of the file explorer. That, and their useless, arrogant, and ignorant support (or whatever it should be called) .
I filed a ticket about this issue already in July. Their support claimed that one can already move the chat window to the right. But it doesn't work the way they suggested. In August, they asked me to provide a screen recording. So I went through the hassle of making a screen recording just to prove that dragging the chat window does ineed *not* work. I did my part so I was expecting them to do theirs. What do you think happened next? Nothing! Then, more nothing! And then, they just inadvertedly closed the ticket without a resolution or explanation.
Github, that's a pretty shitty way to treat your customers!11 -
How do you actually accredit code stolen from a project on github? Like it's not used commercially and it's going to be on github, too.
for context: i stole a java class from a minecraft mod. which is about 5% of the source project but makes more then 50% of my project.4 -
My CSS-only hamburger menu.
It's cool and all, just a few lines of code, but some days ago I tried to do a 2 sides hamburger menu.
Based on that I just copied it and changed every left for right. Worked. Like. A. Charm. I had to apply some z-index stuff of course but nothing out of ordinary.
I'm so cool. I'll upload it to GitHub ASAP, but it's not a priority rn. -
Don’t commit your terraform state to github please, especially if it contains over 20 API keys for various services, and database master passwords.
Not speaking from experience of having to do some frantic rebasing of someones PR *eye twitch*6 -
Well fuck!!
Sorry a big part of community sick due to GitHub merger with M$ (including Alice, Floydian, Michelle and more)
But this is fucking unbearable!!
WHAT THE FUCK IS AN ENTERPRISE DEVELOPER AND ACCELERATING THEIR USE OF GITHUB!!
HOW CAN A DEVELOPER (EVEN IF WORKING ON A PROPRIETARY SOFTWARE) BE AFFECTED BY THE MERGER!!??
I HOPE NOT THAT THIS FUCKING DEFINITION OF ENTERPRISE DEVELOPERS MEANS DEVELOPERS PAYING SHITLOAD OF MONEY TO M$.

Do correct me if I'm wrong.2 -
Well this is epic... The GitHub acquisition is so big, my dad just emailed an article to me about it...
He's a Dev but he's not usually up to date on tech news...
I'm sorta confused, I see a lot of about in Algo about this but didn't we know already like 2 days ago? -
Change is truly a difficult thing. I've been trying to introduce my group colleagues to GitHub, I even gave them some tutorials that I used. I'm not saying I know everything about Git or GitHub but the pros of using it or any VCS outweigh using Google drive, zipping and email each other the code and many other creative ways of sharing work. Let's just say two months have passed there haven’t been any change ☹2

Why devRant is not open source?
I know that it has a Github issue tracker with a awful amount issues.
Wouldn't it be better if people could work on the platform to improve it since most of the devRant users are developers.
(Just a random thought i had)11 -
Hearing a lot about Microsoft trying to acquire Github here on devRant.
Made me think, if this happens what will happen to atom?
Development will likely continue but then you would have two electron based, open source code editors both by Microsoft and Github. Probably not that much different from now, but still feels awkward...
Any thoughts? I love both editors and use them near daily. I just hope Atom was more performant and as actively developed as vscode.10 -
Tatatataa...
Writing a simple parser for a simple configuration format at work...
Surprisingly fun; I decided not to use a lot of ECMAScript's fancy stuff and do it C-like... ish.
Good fun, I may make it more generic and configurable and put it on my GitHub... -
How are these AI safety dimwits not aware that there are literally people opening PRs on non-toy, legitimately deployable ransomware C&C toolkits on GitHub. full blown CVE exploit kits etc, with readme’s and all.
yet god forbid ChatGPT doesn’t remind you it’s an AI language model so, it isn’t able to make predictions about whether the sun will rise tomorrow.2 -
So I wanted to publish the spherical voronoi minesweeper on steam. I paid the one time fee, submitted my tax document and then never heard back, and that’s four month ago.
Shall I just open source it, it’s a unity project so idk how the structure of that should be.
I can also just put the built version on github, if the file size is not enormous.4 -
So I have a very important question. I don’t really contribute on Github because I’m not good with any code that isn’t mine, I don’t understand it I don’t know why they did it or if I would have come up with it and I especially don’t know how to add on to it or fix it.. am I hopeless?2
-
lol every time I look at actively maintained code on GitHub
Thing is, there'll always be things I don't know. One needs to learn that. However, it's not an excuse to stop learning, so just keep learning every day and be confident in what you know -

How do you guys keep track of IT news... Not financial or companies related news, but new frameworks worth looking for, new updates on know languages/frameworks?
For instance for me to keep up with flutter or firebase I do by following both the github and YouTube channel. But I learned about flutter (early on) for instance, by a random lucky search...
Am I missing on something big? A blog, YouTube channel... Because if I am not missing on something like that I know what to do in the next hackton :P8 -
Why would you post your code on GitHub and charge to use it. I'm not using your servers your not providing me any service I need but you still expect me to pay for open source code you posted yourself. What is going through your mind. To come up with that business plan7

Guys, i'm so sad and laughing too cause i losed my GitHub account. I tried to recover but... i don't have the old OS where i had the SSH key so i can not authenticate myself as the owner, don't have the 2FA on my new mobile because i'm dumb and... i don't had the recovery codes... please, kill me...
The good news, i can make another account with the same e-mail.2 -
What the fuck is happening with Windows 10 after April 2018 update?
1. Opened my local github repo in external drive
2. Made changes
3. Try to stage, get this weird "error: unable to open object pack directory: .git/objects/pack: Function not implemented" error.
4. Googled it, says check drive for errors.
5. Scanned drive, fixed error, drive has no errors.
6. Opened my repo, all file sizes are "ZERO", including my changed work, gone, poof. -
Recently (about two weeks ago, iirc), I posted a question about peoples interest in a "more moderate" CoC.
Based a bit on my own thoughts, and various things posted by others around here, not just in response to my question, I've created the first draft of such a CoC.
I'd appreciate peoples thoughts about it. I have everything set up in GitHub for review/submissions.

It would be neat if you could filter by tags, like you can filter by categories now.
So you can e.g. say "I don't want to see any posts with the tags 'gdpr' 'github' 'microsoft' "
(My feed would probably be empty afterwards, but that's not the point)1 -
For some reason github is not working on my wifi.
First thought it was down.
But then found it's running from my phone data.
Tried calling isp. They say it's working .
Anyone here who can help.... ?
Currently running from my mobile data but it's too slow..... 😢9 -
GitHub is down. Unlucky client, guess I have a *really* good excuse not to push that scope-creeped heap of a new frontend. Because apparently 'those "small changes" you've made to the Sketch file are in fact entirely new uses of the data structures' wasn't good enough.

AWS SDK is open source, but it is not actually open source. Found an improvement and proposed it on GitHub, but they have to change it in all SDKs and, by the way, it needs to change the API, which is not open source, of course. They suggested to post on AWS forum and I didn't get answer until now. Sad. :/
-
Software development is so rotten: So I had to compile curl 32 bit. But just to create the configure script I needed friggin autoconf, libtooling and 2 other packages which homebrew would not install, because there were too many github-API requests. So I created a fucking github account just to create a token, import it in my bash to enable more requests. And it even worked. That is the scandal: That this whole shattered, stinking abomination of a process even produces some software you might actually run... and that we are using it.2
-
VSCode doesn't request permission to edit github workflow files by default. Because it's an OAuth app and not a token, I can't grant it scopes that it did not request. I am forced to use SSH or a personal token instead of VSCode's built-in Github authentication, but because there's no convenient way to have VSCode forget that it authenticated a repo, I am also forced to checkout my own repo again and push the changes across.
If you want your product to Just Work, then Just Use Open Processes that are easy to hook into, interrupt or partially replace. Nobody can think of everything. Not even Apple's or Microsoft's mighty designers. What everyone can do is to provide graceful failure modes and offer partial strategies. -

Somebody once said to me: "I see no difference between a Git repository and a GitHub repository."
Well, mister, did you know that GitHub uses several repositories for every project? GitHub's interface is certainly not redundant or unneeded.2 -
hello guys
I recently learnt the django and im not an expert . I pushed a repository on my github
"pouria03".
and i just started to learn DRF(django rest framework) .
do you have any advice for me to help my progress?
I'll be thankful4 -
To avoid PMs and bosses on devRant, login should be made using GitHub. And only accounts with code on them should be accepted. And not just forks.2

I have several php+html+css websites and up until now was working on them directly from ftp. I would like to introduce version control (github) but dont know how to go about it. My webhosting has cpanel and if Im not mistaken it should accept deployment from github. How I should go about it?4
-
Started a new job and seeing the commits and notifications on Github while not understanding what these people are doing yet, makes me both excited and frustrated at the same time.
-
okay so i want some suggestions from you people, basically i am undergraduate, highly interested in web development as well as software development, i have created some web apps(i use MEAN stack). i want to become an open source contributor and i am not sure how to do that. I have tried going to different github repos but it was of no help. So any suggestions on what to do and how to do is welcome5

Shallow() or To Mount()....shit react tests have been killing me. The issues on github have not been resolved. And our team lead has insisted on them even more. Haha they way I have been ditching them.
-
Long time....loooong time since I got on here. That said, I'm just gonna jump on this like everyone else. You know the drill.
MS just bought GitHub. Fucking. GitHub.
I just pulled an all-nighter a day ago to set up a DigitalOcean droplet for the first time. I'm sorry. I just don't trust Microsoft. Look at the Halloween memos and everything they've done. Then they try to (literally) buy trust. It doesn't work like that, at least not for me.
I see people comparing users talking about moving to GitLab to the people who said they were leaving the US after the 2016 elections but never did. That's the difference here - I set up my first GitLab install.
I dislike the thought of the buyout so much that I want to ignore the fact that it's happening. But gotta get through. GitHub could easily take the way of SourceForge and GitLab prevails. -
Heyho...
I tried a solution found on github to export my mails from Protonmail (it's ofc deprecated but should work... not for me 😂). Got some errors, fixed them, new errors... 🤔 None of the reported ones btw...
https://github.com/scastiel/...
The import/export app is in beta and not available for the public.
The bridge thing is still for paid users and not for linux.
IMAP is for paid users, too... bah...
Is there another way? 😢
... forwarding multiple mails at once would be nice...1 -
I’m paying for GitHub Copilot and it is serving me well in about 40% of the cases. It is nice to not have to type entire utility methods. Sometimes it also try-catches things that I wouldn’t generally do with a new library that I haven’t used before. Pretty cool.
I also used the Cursor IDE, that isn’t very useful in general cases, but helped me read and understand a horrible piece of 200 line-function with extremely cryptic variable names. Sadly, my free quota there ended.
I hope GitHub Copilot Chat is better at explaining things.2 -
So Microsoft and github...
You can always host gitlab youreself if you är concerned about someone else running the service. I did some years ago. But the question is why not use the free services? I'll stay using github or gitlab as long as it's free... I use VSTS att work and have no problem using Microsoft products as long as they do what they är suposed to...
But if youre reely upset. The community edition of gitlab is free so you can host youre own instance in youre basement or in a cloud... AWS, GCP, Azure... Then you own the data.1 -
The bad thing about github library's readmes is that every time i act as it's step by step guide i encounter errors that no not mentioned how to solve it any where

Ant.design repo and website just got deleted. It‘s still on npm and there is a mirror on a chinese github fake but this is serious.
I have the weird feeling that this is a political issue.
I will not use or support platforms that are under control of the chinese government (gitee).
The only right thing to do now seems to ditch Ant.d (at least in future projects). Maybe I shouldn‘t trust or use chinese software at all.5 -
Ok so I'm new to git and am wondering whether or not to move my repo's from github to gitlab, are there any major benefits to moving it?4
-
I highly recommend https://www.codegrepper.com/ (if you're not using it, you may really like it), I'm paying for GitHub Copilot for use in vscode and Android Studio and find it very useful, and now playing with ChatGPT as a google search/chrome extension https://chrome.google.com/webstore/...
With Google Graph and the combination of everything mentioned above life is pretty good :D6 -

- little ttest script in PHP PDO: works
- MySQL-CLI: works
- the program itself: doesn't work
In all 3 cases, the credentials are the same (checked a thousand times)

Not the case since the other 2 test cases did succeed --'6 -
Finally on github.

This is my worst day ever! I so fucking hate the sh**t gitkraken right now! Its always slow and buggy i got it and i accept it but its a lyer!
I wanted to reinstall my pc (linux mint) and before i started i pushed my feature repository to github. The gitkraken shows me its fine i pushed cool down bro. I reinstaled then i see... the f**ing repo is not in the f**ing github.
Right now i have to up all f**ing night, i so pissed off!! I'm new in my company, they hired me because i have a lot of experience on javascript and now, the fucking gitkraken destroyed my entire work.
Okay i know, its my fault to because i not pushed my repo early, but come on!!
Thank you gitkraken! Thank you! I will never use this lyer, slow, buggy piece shit again!!5 -
Anyone else who can't comment on github?
Also was I had to try my pushes severally over the weekend(Not the fun kind).
Is github okay? -

Honestly, I've never even given a second thought to the use of the terms "whitelist", "blacklist" or "master". I mean, I'm not against this change in any way, but I'm also not sure if these terms are commonplace because they stem from racially charged meaning or not. Guess my privileged ass has never given it much thought.

Rant 1

Seriously what is the fucking difference between github gitlab bitbucket? Is it like the whatsapp/viber/signal shit?
Whatsapp was the first to create a system for free chatting? Then viber came along and copied the exact same fucking bullshit like whatsapp? Then signal came along and copied the same bullshit? And all other apps too?
Github was the first to create a system of GIT? And then gitlab came along and copied the exact same bullshit? Then bitbucket copied the same horseshit too?
Rant 2

1) echo "shit" > recruiter.txt
2) echo "shit" >> recruiter.txt
> Will create the file if not exists and OVERWRITE the text inside it
>> Will create the file if not exists and APPEND the text inside it
This is the only difference
Correct?

Fuck this devrant ass shit for making me wait 2h to post a new rant. What are we in 1995? Not even facebook has this stupid restriction. Not any social media app EVER in existence. This shit is whack. U fear someone spamming the shit out of the app. But thats GOOD FOR U because you then have active people creating content on ur platform. Put this restriction away before i slap my dick on ur face!12 -

Alright, everyone speaks of Github and it's usefulness and all. I have gone on there, I have done the tutorial a couple of times. And I still am not grasping it. Does the fact I'm a student make it this way? Is this useful for a student or is it beyond my skill level and coding needs?7

Hey guys, need your advice please.
In september Last year I've started my apprenticeship. Before that I made a year internship and developed a Software for them.
After I've left the internship, my Old Boss (Boss from internship) asked me if I can support the Software a while. So, I set Up a git, made it available in github, but private (had to paid for it - from my own Money). After not hearing something from him - He didn't understood how He Can Log in Into GitHub -.- WTF ! I wrote him multiple instructions but it was useless.
Because I don't have the desire and patience anymore - and don't want to pay with my own Money to Make it available for them - pay for something they can't even Login because they are ... Yeah.. I've decided to cancel the membership in github some weeks ago.
Today my Old Boss contacted me via E-Mail, after not hearing something from him in months.
Now I don't know how to react - He wants that I Code for him, the Software again.
on the one Hand I don't want to "leave him alone" but on the other hand I don't want to Support this Shit anymore.
What should I do?
At least I want to get paid for my Work. But I don't know, if this is legal to earn Money next to your apprenticeship. My current Boss Said one time that this would be No Problem, but I'm not sure about it.
Would be glad about any help and advice from you.
Thanks.3 -
Hi! I'm from Argentina, and on top of that from a relatively small city. Suffice it to say that there are next to none technology/programming/development events around. Do any of you know of a website where I can buy "stickers" ? I've seen some laptops full of grunt, gulp, GitHub, js, Python, etc etc stickers on top, and I wold really love to have some. Shipment is not an issue (as long as it ships within USA :P)
Thanks a lot !!!!3 -
Github be like:
Want control on your files? Host your own LFS!(This goes the same even for those who are buying their storage packs for boosting their LFS storage by giving money)
FUCK THIS SHIT... I am a poor student. I also don't have a fucking credit card!! Can't you improve your system instead of asking people to host their shit themselves?
Also, why do they even have access to deleting user files??!! They literally asked me to give a sha sum of files I want to restore so they can delete the rest as one option and providing hashes of files to be deleted as another.
And the hashes are not even secret(as the files are in an open repository).
Which means, if you have a large file on a public repository and animosity with a github staff, BOOM! That file is no more!!9 -
Is it a good idea to show the github repo link to my boss ( I'm the only developer/IT guy/etc in the company)
PS: I need to report my work and I'm not sure how to explain my progress11 -
RIP GitHub
Take a service I like and pay for, a service that is about open source and collaboration, and sell it to a company that is complete garbage and has for years been hated for selling garbage overpriced software that is just terrible.
I’m not looking to argue about Windows (it’s garbage no matter how much you want it not to be) but Microsoft as a company is just not a fit for GitHub.
I’m not stupid though, I see the goal. The goal is that old school, shitty emperor use software teams will be more likely to use GitHub if it is owned my MS. On the same way that many of them force their employees to use garbage Windows machines because “it’s what we have always done”.
GitHub will become another shitty service that some people argue is good based on their ignorance
Of other options. This is sad.
TLDR: I fucking dislike this acquisition entirely and will immediately remove all private repos from GitHub and cancel my subscription on Monday if it is announced.2 -
Don you hate when someone from {gender}coders or any other group post photos to all social media channels "coding", inspiration quotes for that specific {gender} , and what not, they even posted their github .. but then .. see pic.
And all you see in their github are exercises from courses and books, nothing else.15 -
I can't be the only developer thats putting together a all current documentation myself and my clients uses. To send a copy to Github, Microsoft and twitter in order for them to wokify the documentation.

Anyone notice how fucking difficult it is to install software from GitHub... well for amateurs mostly. I went through pretty much hell to simply install a spotify playlist downloader script from GitHub. Had I not have had Python installed I would have had to download that too. You Install Python, Google a guide to get the pip command up and running. Download the software. PIP it? Then you find out it uses 3 custom libraries that have to be installed separately. Oh that reminds me, u still need an IDE to open the script and figure that, on your own. Then the script is super buggy, expected though it was still in development. I have no idea where I am going with this. Point is ppl need to get better with hosting code at GitHub. And it wouldn't hurt to include a guide to installation in ReadMe.md OR Installation.md. Ok am done now xd5

I'd like to follow along with some react tutorials, but pretty much all I'm finding are ones that either just have blocks of code (with little to no explanation) to copy/paste or just a link to github.
Do any of you know of any good, well explained tutorials I can follow along to that actually explain what they're doing (and actually end with a sample project, so not just theory).2 -
My company has a GitHub repo for interview questions, but literally 0 of them are practical. We don't go around recursing through shit and/or trying to scuttle through graphs. Like, the opposite. Help me make a stored proc not a stored proc.

So, just wondering, I want to work on some coding, but have no idea where to start. So i thought I could try cloning some repos from github, and try to do sth. But not sure where to find repos that would work like that. Any recommendations where to start?2

One of the best product feature updates (though it's not "very" recent) that I really found interesting and useful from Developer perspective is integration of JIRA cloud with GITHub and how it uses issue key to associate the commit.
I makes things a bit easy while working in DevOps model :)

When just push to github 2 hours before and u only change the views then theres this " the head of your current commit is different from the repo. Either push and pull to avoid conflicts" u tried pulling and its not working and you only change the views. No branch no other contributer. 😩

Has anyone forked (not fucked) a github project/gem just because the owner no longer gives a fuck to make those PR's?2

Someone in GitHub made a good pose.
A paid solution like AppSync should be complete and does not require hacking, using the AppSync JavaScript client is just a pain in the ass.
