Manager: How come the intern does way more tickets than you?
Dev: Because you told me to only give him the easy ones since he either can’t do them otherwise or takes too long on the hard ones

Manager: "How long do you think this will take?"
My brain:
Don't do it

Don't do it
Don't do it

Talking with a dev friend:
- I want to create a program. Want to help me?
- Sure, any ideas?
- Yeah, I'd like to create a paint software using Java
- Cool
After 3 mins:
- Nah I just realized it'd take too long and no one would use it. Wanna play Rainbow Six tho?
- Okay
After playing for 15 mins:
- Holy shit! This game is so buggy. I could make it better
After 3 mins:

Android : devRant is consuming too much power in background
Me : Say what ??

Manager: The site I loading too slow. How can we improve this?
Me: *f5 & look at the network log* the server is taking too long to respond some image requests. We could encode them into the Html to have them all delivered in a single request.
Manager: GTMetrix says we need to compress the images.
Me: *reads GTMetrix report* we would only have a 150kb improvement. It won't even be noticeable.
Manager: If the images take a long time to load, it means that they're too big, right?
Me: or the server is taking a long time to respond our request for them, which is the case.
Manager: compress the images and upload them.
Me: *compresses the images and uploads them* done.
Manager: I don't see any improvement.
Me: if only there was someone who could have predicted such an outcome...1 -
User Ip Address is too long (maximum is 30 characters).
Okay, dear third-party API, I guess users with IPv6 don't deserve the service... And wtf is 30-char limit for an IP address, when IPv4 can be only 15 characters long, and IPv6 can be up to 39 characters? Did you calculate a weighted average of IP length to get that number?11 -
Client: That loading screen is going by too fast. The customer can‘t read the slightly too long text. Add 2 more seconds to the load time.
Is this real life?19 -
When given a task, don't start working immediately. Think about it first.
If it is taking too long, don't just persevere, stop and think why.
You are paid to think, not type.13 -
SUPERVISOR: You wrote this 140 lines method, it's too long. You should split it up, it's not readable
IHateForALiving: Bruh be serious, this is a single switch-case; I can't split it.
SUPERVISOR: Fine, I'll do it.
HIS CODE: He split the 140 lines method into 2 methods: the first is 4 lines long; it's a try-catch surrounding a call to the other method, 136 lines long.9 -
Are you done yet?
Is it ready for review ?
How far?
Any updates?
When can I check?
We are wasting time..
How long will it take ?
Are you saying this will take 2 days to complete?
😪😪😪
Pls raise a cup with me if you can relate.
Add yours too.8 -
Note to self: Never leave a non-dev person mid-way through a Windows installation. They'll find a way to fuck it up and then blame it on you.
//this one restarted his system mid-installation coz it was 'taking too long'.
Why is common sense in such scarcity?4 -
I just had a 2 hours long company lunch followed by a 1 hour meeting with the whole team. And I still have a big problem to discuss with two colleagues. Too much social interaction for one day for me. Damn, how my head hurts.27

Never again will I fucking work for anyone close to me! It's not fucking worth helping them.
Backstory is too long. Lets just say that they fucking expect too much as we're friends. Assuming that paying 10$ for your domain every year entitles me to work on every ducking detail of your website. Not to forget I gave this person an insane discount on the entire project.
I lost a friend or someone who I assumed was a friend15 -
"Visual Studio is busy" .. oh sure VS, don't let me interrupt whatever u're doing on *my* computer using *my* cpu .. by all means, take ur time, I can wait .. want to call ur mom from my phone after u're done too? something to eat maybe? as long as u're happy..2

Java's System.out.println because it's too effing long to write!
And in general, all of Java because you need an MB of code just for Hello World.9 -

I hate social functions.
Have to shave of my months long beard and dress up like a gentleman, too much effort imo.5 -
I’m a baby and for some reason thought that bootstrap would take too long to learn :/ just learned, redesigned and implemented an entire site using bootstrap in like an hour :/

When the method name was too long and it's like describing the entire function.
Like getUserByUserIdOrderByAgeAndHaveAtLeastOneChild ()

Quick question.
The domain name I wanted was taken, and the person who bought it refused my offer.
So, I'm going to change it up a bit. Which one should I go for?

Do you ever find yourself proudly staring at your beautiful code, forgetting everything else and suddenly noticing you've been at it for far too long?3 -
When you ask Windows to copy two large folders simultaneously and you see : "Time remaining : 1634 years, 156 days and 3 hours".
Sorry I quit, these 3 hours are too long!2 -
Woke up late. Hurriedly got ready for work. Booked an Uber. Opened slack to say I'll be late. Finds out everyone is WFH.
Now I am going to office alone in a 50 minute commute like an idiot.4 -
[PETITION]
This is a petition to end JavaScript, it has had us suffer for oh too long.
Please leave a signature and join the movement to a world without JavaScript.26 -
Oh yeah that shouldn't take too long right? I mean it's just the front end.
No shut your fucking dumb ass mouth up. It will take long. The front end is very complicated, and your stupid fucking ass who couldn't learn to code is in no position to estimate how long it will take. Do us all a favor and stick to the "business" side. Fucking incompetent idiot.
If you're not a programmer, when it comes to estimating how long a task will take. Just shut the fuck up. Just cause you work in this industry does not qualify you to estimate a task. Just shut the fuck up.1 -
So apparently this is how you get kids to learn coding.
Graphics after pretty nice but coding by dragging commands takes too long...16 -
Apparently USPS tracking numbers are case sensitive... I missed a delivery today so went online to check the status.
The code was RAxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxTR
x=numbers
I first typed the letters in lowercase and it said package not found...
Really???!!!!!! Don't you think all those numbers are already too long...3 -
You know you've been staring at code for too long when you see a function called getInitial(), but it looks more like a NSFW term.4

A silent, convincing murderous stare when "there are sudden new requirements for tomorrow get to it chop-chop" goes a long way
But only in small companies or start ups where they know it's in their best interests not to aggravate their only webdev too much.1 -
VSCode, the only thing I hate about this is, it becomes too lag after I left it too long. Probably because of the vin extension, I typed something and it only came out 1/2 seconds and I have to restart my laptop 😭7

For me, the worst co-worker is one who works by the principle of quantity over quality or a person who thinks quick and ugly fixes are a valid way to solve problems. Also: If there are unittest, don't fucking dare to change or remove them, just so your code runs without errors.
But in general, I just can't work with people who don't really think about what they are coding, people who just code straight ahead without making the simplest plan about how to solve something. Most of these people realize too late, that their approach was rather shitty, unreadable and unmaintainable.
I often see memes about "I forgot what I coded last [insert timespan here]". Though it is kind of normal, if it takes you too long to find out what you wrote, you should consider overthinking your coding approaches.
Just my 50 cents.
Damn I miss coding... 4 weeks of learning & exams is too long...6 -
4x4ghz CPU, 16gb of RAM, 100mbps downstream and 1tb ssd... and it took windows only 2 hours and 4 restarts to install an update...WTF11

Woke up from my sleep last night because the solution for a long running bug hit me. In a hurry I ran to my work-desk not too far from the bed and flipped open my laptop so hard I broke the screen.
I’ve sent the laptop for repair but my night was so long I didn’t want to get off because previously I only had one problem but then it doubled.2 -
Getting comfortable in one place for too long and stagnating. It can be easy to automate your job until you can just milk it, but sit still too long and your skills will be irrelevant.
People talk about ageism in development... don't let your mind get old and you'll always have job security.4 -
Websites that redirect you to a custom /404 page after you've typed their way too fucking long URL and misspelled a single word deserve to be nuked from orbit.
Holy fucking shit, why is this a thing? Has this ever helped ANYBODY?9 -
"Your password is too long or too short."

With all the people around here ranting about their PM's, I'm really curious to see how a PMRant app would look like. What are they complaining about?
Devs that listen to music all day long and never want to be disturbed?
Engineers who talk in long, incomprehensible words?
...TDD taking too long?3 -
I fucking hate it when customer changes things in the last minute.
"It's a small change", they say. "It shouldn't take you too long", they say.
You know what? Fuck you.6 -
I found that meme on Reddit (r/linuxmemes) and it perfectly describes my feelings about using KDE on top of Manjaro. Sometimes finding the thing I want takes way too long. So far I think I'll be coming back to GNOME3

I used to think I was so clever by viewing the source code of websites, and would just scroll through it for fun, but what really got me started in programming was the TI-83 calculator I got in grade 10.
You couldn't view the code of most programs on that calc without a computer connection, but I managed to get my hands on the source code of something simple and learned how to prompt for values and calculate things with them. Before I knew it, I was making little programs in BASIC that did formulas for me (Area/circumference of a circle, etc.). One of my professors caught me showing my calculator to another student in class, and assumed I was being a bad student. When I said I made a program as a shortcut for one of the formulas we were learning, she tried to call my bluff and said to write the whole program on the whiteboard for the class to see. 10 minutes of writing and more than one blank stare from my classmates later, the teacher just waved me off and continued the lesson. I was chuffed :-). I made these simple programs for all my math classes throughout high school.
Unfortunately, my first year of university I took a CS course, and my teacher was probably the worst I've ever had in my life. I decided it wasn't for me, and though I did maintain my general aptitude for tech (and was still the person who fixed everyone's printers and viruses), I took a different path, eventually getting an Arts degree in Anthropology.
Where I live, the market for this is more than stale. In fact, it's completely flat, so I thought I would take a course about programming with Arduinos for fun and see if I should return to school for a different certification. It was AWESOME! I made a wireless weather station with Xbees and sensors and built my own anemometer.
I got a job at a manufacturing company, and had the fortune to build a robot which eventually made it's way to the second season of Battlebots. The level of intelligence and enthusiasm I encountered really inspired me, and now here I am at 31, halfway through a BSc in Computer Science and working for a company that makes 3D printers.
It's been a long journey, but the adventure always starts anew tomorrow.5 -

For the first time ever, I’m writing an academic paper while worrying it will be too long, as opposed to being too short. The difference with this paper is that it’s on something I’m passionate about. I’m having fun writing this one - I’m getting paid to do something that doesn’t feel like work. It really makes me think about what job I want to get after college. I understand it’s possible to work without feeling like you’re working, and that’s something I really want.10

At least Linux is honest.
Maybe it's a sign that I've been working too long again... but it's nice to see some blantant, unobfuscated, basic descriptions once in awhile. I had to lookup syntax for a specific param... it's these little things that pleasantly break through and offer brief respite.7 -
Last week, after ransomware hit. Whole week (including the weekend) just to sleep and get back to office.
The director's words still give me shivers "This is taking too long, can't you just write and pay them already?"4 -
Guys, I think I am addicted and I have problems... I tried to write a simple SudokuSolver program in C# (one file) but I ended up writing an ExtensionMethods class, a Puzzle class, a Solver class, an IO class, a Program class...
That's why I hate working on big side-projects for too long -
OK, end of massive fucking 1 year long Dunning-Kruger wave. Time to learn C and algorithms. Looks like I'm Learning the curriculum in reverse order but nothing too bad.3

For those who whine about authors putting "TL;DR" after the text that was supposed not to be necessarily read...
"TL;DR" means "Too long; didn't read". Hence, we have all the audacity to insert it *after* the long text. When you don't have time to read, you usually scroll to bottom and find a summary if any.
At least, scrolling can be done even by monke and author can concentrate on writing the streams of text to their heart's content instead of fishy semantics.8 -
I just noticed that I'm super fucking anxious about whatsapp and such when people take too long to answer.
Although I have to stop looking at my phone every fucking minute (not joking) , people taking 5+ hours to answer is ridiculous too.12 -

Can you make me just a simple site? Only a few pages..... It won't take you long, we're family too so how about I pay 10% of the real cost??
Weeks of personal free time lost, and a fully fledged eCommerce site 28 pages deep with CMS controlled everything later....5 -
Manager: These estimates are wrong
Me: Why?
M: These shouldn't take too long
Me: Well you asked me to make those while I was busy with the mess design did.
Jr frontend: Manager is right. They shouldn't take too long.
*me knowing jr doesn't know the system nor coding standards*
Jr: I'll fix mine to get a more accurate estimation. Do you want me to do yours?

Me: Just do yours.

Client wanted me to implement a "fix" for the site beeing to large on mobile. He had to scroll too long. I implemented a quick fix and turned the biggest list into a carousel with slick slider (awesome 5-minute-fix btw.)
But it depends on jQuery. I feel so dirty now. The sites amount of JavaScript is three times bigger now, too. Please, don't judge me. 😩2 -

XML isn't too bad, as long as it's fully standards compliant and uses an DTD.
In other words, about 2% of XML documents in the wild. -
If you think you found a solution, think twice.
If the implementation is taking too long (too many changes in different functions and classes to fix a single bug) there may be a better solution, it's never too late to reverse the changes and start again, it's not a shame, in the worst case you will reimplement the same solution, but better, in the best you'll find an easier and better one.
Don't run, even if there's a deadline.
It's much worse having to deal with negative feedbacks later. -

Nope,
Far too in love with myself to have any sort of insecurities.
Not that there is anything wrong with having them, we are all different. I just believe that insecurities come from giving other people far too much power over ourselves. And I just couldn't care less what people say about me, as long as it IS about me. See?
The more confidence you project the more attention you will get, be it good or bad, it doesn't matter since it is the only way to go up in your workplace. Having a personality besides "ZOmG cOde Is LiFE" really goes a long way also.

I got a new job recently(that's an older rant's story) and I find amusing that I'm still getting reject notices from job offers which I applied to... 2 months ago 😂
That one from 2 months ago is quite funny cuz I didn't have any other interview with the company, just like the first interview with a HR lady, so after one week I gave up with that company and moved on. So I received the rejection notice today and my first thought was "how considerate!"5 -
We estimated out how long a new project was gonna take using story points. It wasn't too big and the estimate came out to two months. We discussed it and it seemed to be all good.
Later on someone pointed out a Quora question where my boss asked why it would take so long to develop such a project.
My boss trusts people on Quora more than his own employees.2 -

In reply to:
https://devrant.com/rants/3957914/...
Okay, we must first establish common ground here. What do we understand about "showing"? I understand you probably mean displaying/rendering, more abstractly: "obtaining". Good, now we move on.
What's the point of a front-end? Well, in the 90's that used to be an easy answer: to share information (not even in a user-friendly way, per se). Web 2.0 comes, interaction with the website. Uh-oh, suddenly we have to start minding the user. Web 3.0 comes, ouch, now the front-end is a mini-backend. Even tougher, more leaks etc. The ARPAnet was a solution, a front-end that they had built in order to facilitate research document-sharing between universities. Later, it became the inter(national) net(work).
First there was SGML to structure the data (it's a way of making it 'pretty' in a lexicographical way) and turn it into information (which is what information is: data with added semantics) and later there was HTML to structure it even further, yet we all know that its function was not prettification, but rather structure. Later came CSS, to make it pretty. With its growing popularity, the web started to be used as a publishing device.
source:
https://w3.org/Style/CSS20/...
If we are to solely display JSON data in a pretty way, we may be limiting ourselves to the scenario of rendering pretty web pages using aesthetic languages such as CSS. We must also understand that if we are only focusing on making a website pretty with little to moderate functionality, we aren't really winning. A good website has to be a winner in all aspects, which is why frameworks came into existence, but.. lmao, let's leave that to another discussion.
Now let me recall back my college days.. front-end.. front-end.. heck, even a headset can be a front-end to a pick-order backend. We must think back to the essence, to the abstract. All other things are just implementations of it (yes, the horrendous thousands of Javascript libraries, lol).
So, my college notes say:
"Presentation layer: this is the UI.
In this layer you ask the middle tier for information, which gets that information from a database, which then goes back to middle tier, back to presentation. In the case of the headset, the operators can confirm an order is ready. This is essentially the presentation tier again: you're getting information from the middle tier and 'presenting it' as it were.
The presentation layer is in essence the question: how do I bring my application data to my end users in a platform-and solution-independent way?"
What's JSON? A way to transport data between the middle tier and the presentation tier. Is that what frontend development is? Displaying it in a pretty way? I don't think it is, because 'pretty' is an extra feature of obtaining and displaying data. Do we always have to display data in a pretty way? Not necessarily. We could write a front-end script (in NodeJS perhaps) that periodically fetches certain information from a middle-tier is serves a more functional role rather than a rendering one.
The prettification of data was a historical consequence of the popularity of the web (which is a front-end) (see second paragraph with link). Since the essence of a front-end is to obtain information from the back-end (with stress on obtaining), its presentation is not necessarily a defining characteristic of it, but rather an optional and solution-dependent aspect, a facet.4 -
Everything startest with HTML. I got an awesome book about HTML/CSS and I just started learning and trying out some stuff. At the beginning I got a lot of help from my father but soon I created my own websites! I setup a free webserver and after some time, I met PHP. I made tons of stuff with PHP :)
After about 1 year of creating things with PHP, I learned Javascript. And with Javascript I got into game development. I created some games but I wanted more. So I tried Unity Engine. But... well... It was hard. Then I tried Godot Engine and I finally found a game engine wich I enjoy!
I created a lot of games.
Then in 2016 I met Lua, wich is my favourite language now! (But I didn't do much with it)
Later I also met Node.js but I'm still learning :)1 -

What makes you feel like you have imposters syndrome and how so?6 -

So I applied for a Cloud Architect position. The process was very intensive. Roughly 6 interviews, 2 practical assignments and a written exam. In total it took me 3 weeks to go through the screening process. I aced everything, and was told they were going to send me an offer. I received an email on the 21st of April asking me if I was still interested. I replied back immediately saying I was most def interested. The next morning I get an email back from the hiring manager, who happened to CC the client as well, saying I took too long to reply to the offer, and the job was filled. I was perplexed as to how I took too long to reply. I went through the email chain that the client also received, and saw the hiring manager changed the email headers in the reply chain from the 21st of April, to the 12th of April. So it made out that I did indeed take too long and the client went with someone else! WTF! Very unprofessional, but very little I could do.. I wasted a lot of time and energy and heartache with this!4

The reason Google page loads are so fast is because their research showed people will use something less frequently if it takes a long time to load.
I'm starting to understand that better now as my email fills up with Pocket, Quora subscription newsletters. Their pages take too long to load on 2G (20KB/s, I'm traveling internationally) -

# This isn't THAT bad, but since I never had any collab before this one, this is the worst so far
I'm in a web development school where we need to do a yearly project. At the beginning, we started with the idea of doing an online wallet that would handle crypto-currencied (#blockchains), and other currencies too.
On the paper that sounds good, but the dude decided to create a NodeJS server api, and let's be honest, this was a gas factory. I couldn't help him because he was too fast in his ideas, and the third member was a bit more useful because he was the one creating the mobile app, so all he needed was an url that the dude couln't manage to create.
After a few weeks he started over the project, then over again a few weeks later, before coming to us and saying it was too difficult. We said "yeah, I mean you're own your own since the beginning, no wonders!" "Uh do you guys care if we change the whole project to do something else? Like a CV library"
Went a moment where he tried to over sell some incredible (read "overly common") features that already existed 10 years ago on some famous websites (ie. Monster), and he then eventually told me that this idea came from his new job, and that they needed this library. So we would have to work for his company for free. Nice.
The third guy and me came with a new idea (image recognition with IA and stuff), and we saw the dude maybe 5 times the whole week while we're supposed to work together -
In legacyCode, somebody mixed jQuery data-toggle with custom JS triggers that toggle the target's DOM node, and to "fix" the mess, set display: block !important.

Not for too long, really. Around 12-13h in the office and next 4-5h for my personal project. For a week. Then I stopped crunching and went back to 7-8h in the office and 6-7h of personal project.

I want to study Java + Spring Boot but I hate the long syntaxes and boilerplate codes. Too many codes to do simple things turns me off.4

Always keep pushing your boundaries.
Don't stay too long on anyone thing
i.e. Keep learning new stuff once you are confident about the old stuff.
Don't worry about the language, pick up one and get started. -
Anybody is having backache?

Has this happened to you all too or just me?
So I was interested in a coding course and it was really long like 8 weeks, but still I started and now in the mid I just got bored of it and want to do something else.
Do comment and tell me if it has happened to you too...1
