I think I get a programmer high.
Like when I program, I get really into it, time is flying, I'm having fun problem solving, I am super focused, my brain is thinking super fast, and I have a hard time stopping.
Maybe similar to a runners high?9 -

So, today for my SO's father who is already over 70 and wants to try Linux. However, he doesn't want Linux on his main PC for now, rather on the old one so that he can take his time to get familiar, which is a reasonable plan.
But holy crap, what a machine! Intel Core2 Duo 4400, 2 GB DDR2(!) RAM, 250 GB IDE(!) HDD, DVD RW drive. Graphics, sound and LAN integrated on the mobo chipset. It's half a miracle that it doesn't run on steam. The machine had been delivered with Vista and has always been painfully slow.
It doesn't even support booting from USB, but I had prepared a DVD just in case. Surprise: it booted from DVD without issues and with full HW support!
Partitioned and installed, deleted Vista in the process (felt good). I went with the full blown Mint 20 Cinnamon edition because XFCE isn't as beautiful. Also, having XFCE now and then Cinnamon looking different on the other PC would be confusing.
Installation took some time, but worked. Cinnamon's RAM usage is at 750 MB idle, and at 1.1 GB with Firefox started. Once the PC is booted, it runs pretty OK with reduced swappiness and noatime on all file systems, plus unnecessary startup applications disabled. Updates took long, but ran through successfully. Installed LibreOffice and some small games, Firefox got uBlock Origin, Youtube worked OOTB.
That PC somehow had escaped disposal several times - and now has a proper OS for the first time in its miserable existence. It runs so much better than it ever has. Just wow, a "big" Linux desktop from 2020 blows a contemporary Vista out of the water on such an old machine!16 -

A BIG SHOUTOUT TO MY FRIEND @theKarlisK
He is the real MVP.
We both spent the weekend to setup OpenVPN + Pi-Hole on Oracle free tier.
He hand held me through the entire process, was super patient with my silly queries and in fact explained me everything so well that it got imprinted in my mind.
And ofc, he was super quick to debug and resolve issues and handed me all the commands for quick execution.
Super glad to have worked with him on this project.11 -

I did a thing. And I'm super happy about it. I just wanted to share.
I bought an LLC and have registered a domain name for it. I know there's a bit of a stigma about people who are always saying that they have ideas. But I'd like to think those with ideas that are willing to commit to them and actually create something with the idea instead of making others do it, is what matters the most.
Anyways. I'm not going to share anything about the idea because it is still in its infancy and I want to release it when it actually has traction.4 -

So I'm trying to get used to using vim and I've spent a couple of days setting up my vimrc and practising commands and what not.
Come today I'm doing my first proper coding session and my codes sending back weird errors and I can't work out why
Then when I read very carefully I find :w somewhere it's not supposed to be... Of course I'd forgetten to enter normal mode a ton of times and now my code is littered with :wq and :w so I spent a few minutes combing my code to find them all and it all works now.

So apparently windows configures my stereo headphones as 5.1 headphones by default (which it never did before) thus causing weird bugs in games like witcher 3 where dialogs are super silent and everything else is super noisy. Thank you microsoft, for continuously making things worse.7

So I've been working trying to get a file exporter for a binary file format mostly reverse engineered - 2001 Super Monkey Ball 2 (GameCube) if anyone's interested.
Everything works fine, goals show up in the right places, wormholes work as intended, etc. That is everything, except every single level you create will be invisible, or crash (Depending on which version of Dolphin emu you use).
This happens whenever trying to specify object names for 3D objects. I checked, all the many offsets seem correct, Object names are correct. Tried both null terminated strings and fixed 80 character strings - nothing.
Some other guy also made an exporter that works, however the code is an absolute mess - basically unreadable. It also lacks some newer parts of the file spec, which is the main reason as to why I'm rewriting it.
And as I'm working with an almost entirely unheard of file format, there are few people to go to for help. The 2 I know who are also familiar with the LZ file format have no idea either...

Seriously I think the Slack apps are really among the worst I have ever had to use. That is both on mobile (iOS) and desktop (Mac). It’s super slow thanks to Electron Desktop and super buggy on mobile. Connection Speed is really slow as well.

I was told a few times how Musk was a bit of a super villain. And while yes he kind a fits the batman rule of super villain， the ones i‘d trust less are the quieter ones.
Yes Jeff Besos is actually the real super villain. He speaks less， working conditions seem quite draconian and more importantly， you have to be an asshole on yhe business world and he is one of the best.3 -
I have spent days trying to solve a windows 10 installation problem. I'm so pissed off at my own stupidity.
All I had to do was unplug my main hardrive with Ubuntu installed on it because of course windows doesn't play nice with other operating systems is being installed.
I only need you for games windows 10! Why be so fucking difficult!17 -

I'm sick of people using the excuse "I don't care if Google keeps all my data it's just for adds"
That's true now but if you look at the current trends governments are making to forcing ISP's to store metadata, then it will be the actual data. Eventually they push that to other companises as well.
Now look at Australia for example the police don't need to notify you, let alone get a warrant, to access your metadata. There's also a law in NSW were you can be charged for accociating with a peraon commuting a crime.... Now your in jail for downloading movies years ago that you forgot about but your ISP didn't. I now that's a rather extreme punishment but, Imagine if the government needed some cash so they fine every person that ever downloaded a movie and everyone accociated with person.
Just a crazy theory with poor examplees but just because your data isn't hurting now doesn't mean it won't.

I have been testing out Manjaro and I have to say I'm impressed! Im currently running it on a 2009 hp pavillion(1.8Ghz CPU 2GB ram) and it is super responsive and even ran intellij! Gradle took a while but that's to be expected!
Should I switch my main os from Ubuntu to Manjaro? I need reasons for and against!12 -

So today one of my friends started dualbooting Deepin(a linux distro for those of you who don't know), and he's super hyped about it and even learnt some commands and stuff like that and then another one of my friends started customizing his cinnamon desktop environment on Linux Mint and he was super hyped as well, then another one of my friends also seemed pretty hyped about it too and he said that we should try and install it tommorow. I have the opportunity to intern at a large multinational company overseas. I can get flown there and have a place to stay so that's not the issue. These are:
#1 it's cutting edge block-chain tech (not that I'll get to do anything super important) that I have no idea how it works. written in a language I don't know.
#2 they're trying to make a certain application of block chain technology proprietary and that goes completely against everything I stand for.
3# I'm only a 2nd year student and don't think I can handle uni while trying to catch up on a new development prosses, maintain decent grades and work part time at a job a might lose, if I go.

Why do some hosting services with MySQL not allow triggers and stored procedures / functions?
Had never tried to use them and now I've done it and deployed a site, I discover I can't create triggers, and that some hosting provider don't allow users to do them... this is a rant but more of a question, as I didn't know and maybe there's lore to it you do know...1 -
