When @dfox and @trogus scroll through their devRant feeds, is it considered slacking off at work, or properly debugging their software..? 🤔10
-
Lately my mornings have started out with sitting on my front porch with a cup of coffee and a smoke for about 15 or 20 minutes scrolling through devrant.
Probably why ive been in a better mood these days31 -
I love my new old-fashioned typewriter like keyboard! Works like a charm and makes fantastic noise each time I press a letter.18

I wrote a complex method for about 6 hours. Then I decided to test it via a console application...
It didnt print any output. After 2 hours of searching for errors I found the mistake: I never called the method. Guys... that's how you waste 2 hours of your life.10 -
I like you if you're not a dev.
I like you if you're a dev.
I don't like you if you're not a dev but you try to act one.7 -
Went to a shop to buy bubble plastic envelopes (gotta send something carefully).
Walked out with a new Bluetooth music headset, couple of charging cables, Ethernet cable and a music input splitter and also those envelopes.
Why am I like this 😓19 -

Me: "Yes.....why?"
Him: "That reporting script you did for <x department> needs some modifications and you decided for whatever fucking obscure reason to do it in perl"
Me: "I felt......experimental"
Him: "Well yes, that is cool and all but it needs some modifications as per <X director> and only your dumbass knows perl because you are just too fucking cute aren't ya?"
Me: "You think I am cute??? <insert spongebob blushing meme>"
Him: "I fucking hate it when you write shit in perl"
In my defense, it was a really short fucking script
For clarification: This was a friendly convo even though it doesn't sound like it. He is actually my employee, and a rather close friend, so there is that level of trust and comraderie29 -

Food and computers.
Sorry for the fat people as well but i think those is legit.
I am sitting next to this friend of mine in class. She is a bit big. Anyhow.
She opens her laptop and i see her screen. Its dirty. But by dirty i mean fucking dirty. Like brow transparent circle like things all over.
I`m like: “shiiiet, whats that on your screen”.
She: “i am not really sure”.
2 days layer in another class we sit together again and she looks at me with a smile.
She: “look my screen is clean. It was dirty because sometimes o sit in bed and eat chicken then type on my keyboard,so when i close my computer the keys touch the screen and voiiiila!”
Me: “..... Wow”
She was quite proud she had elucidated the problem and did not really understand the meaning of my wow.4 -
So this was going to be a comment but damn!!!!
Windows is seriously about making life harder for power users now, every fucking update lately is moving more easy to change things and fucking hiding them inside hidden menus or stupid links that don’t make sense. I mean fuck I just want to turn on dual screen with my laptop (because for some bizarre reason, just showing the desktop on the plugged in monitor is so hard to do automatically, especially since I just plugged a hdmi cable in) and the fucker was gone with nothing but a “detect screens” button before it would use an external screen.
Fuck I’m so close to pulling the plug on windows, but Linux just doesn’t sell me for daily use (yet... it’s getting there though)
The fucking forced updates (yes I consider a random bsod due to a system interrupt, then as it reboots magically has updates awaiting... a forced update) are starting to get to me, the fucking thing half crashing and not responding due to a network transfer of files (the fucker was 5GB)
If it wasn’t for my gaming needs and someone can show me a very good alternative to MS Visio (I haven’t really found one yet) then I would swap over and just adjust to the not so great (imo) desktop environments.5 -

You know, as much as I love computers and technology, I sometimes get sick of staring at a computer screen (especially at work). I love beer. I like trying things out of my comfort zone. German and Belgian beers are absolutely delish, them mfkers know how to make a good brew. I also like my Japanese and Mexican beers, and even though europeans shit on them all the time, there are tons of American brands I love.
But......for the life of me.....every IPA I take tastes like fucking dishwater soap. From artisanal to regular market brands, everything in between. Fuck me man I can't stand the taste.
Anyone feels the same?25 -

I used to love windows and hated Mac
Then I started using MacBook
Now I don’t like windows at all. I don’t like windows laptops either.
I really didn’t want to be this kind of person who liked Mac and doesn’t like windows laptops

That moment when your mobile internet is so slow and you decide to ssh into your server and use elinks to browse the web and everybody around you is like "he's hacking" and I'm like IM JUST TRYING TO READ FUCKING NEWS BECAUSE GUESS WHO DOESNT PAY SO MUCH FUCKING MONEY FOR 1GB PER MONTH WHERE 500MB ARE USED AFTER VISITING ONE FUCKING SITE BECAUSE THERE ARE SO MANY DAMN ADS ON IT. Browsing the web in terminal is super nice btw. Really recommend that8 -
I like, that many code hosting sites are shutting down (Google Code, Codeplex). This does not mean those sites are bad.
The ones I like and use are GitHub, GitLab, Bitbucket (and most personal ones like Gogs or GitLab CE).
Here is my list of the sites I don't like:

- SF

I like obj c more than I like Swift. I don't know why and even tho it is the same API I find obj c more intuitive and useful since it is a strict superset of C and C is very useful.
Not to say I don't like Swift. I like it. I just have something against mobile OS APIs really6 -

I just want to say,
wow the Cloudflare API is awesome.
In less then an hour (from a blank file - to automation and tested) I was able to setup a DDNS task that basically just pulls my public ip (see https://devrant.com/rants/2050450/... for details) comparing it to the current DNS records for and update them if anything has changed in the past 30 minutes.
So kudos to these guys letting me in next to no time having a simple yet elegant way of dealing with my missing static ip.
Why can’t all APis be this simple?3 -

Customer complains that the deployed desktop app is slow at site x.
I check it out with users at site x, and indeed, it does have a delay when trying to connect to a share on a server.
Checks with users at site y and z, no issues.
After a bit of digging, the resolve of a DNS record is most likely the culprit.
Send the ticket to the customer network team to investigate.
Get it back after an hour.
"We have pinged the DNS name, and it responds fine, there must be a bug in the application".
Oh and also, I wrote this rant at work, in my head, with a lot more cursewords involed.3 -

I was already about to hit my head against the wall: was trying to install nginx all the time, but was greeted by apache default page, over and over again I re-installed the servers, tried connecting directly to the server ip, changed server hardware, picked different distros, manually build from source, did everything possible, even searched the whole system for "apache" and different regex...
It was chrome cache........ after I wiped cache I was greeted by welcome to nginx...... 10 hours wasted.......3 -

Me: Why are we spending time building reports for Support? AFAIK they never read or use them.
Boss: Seems they expect you to do it.
Me: Then what exactly are they supposed to be doing? All the issues seem to just escalate back to us.... We should just make sure issues never get into PROD
Boss: I agree, they're always firefighting... we gave them more funding so eventually they should catch up **Me: I highly doubt it, you should just stop hiring monkeys** esp. if we prevent PROD issues.
Me: Yea... we should prevent production issues because someone always has to pay off the (technical) debt and interest rates in PROD are very high6 -

I had a pretty good laugh just now.
There's this extension I wrote for our client's online shop which enables them to create template files via the backend. Essentially it's just an editor reading and writing files from/to a directory.
So I installed said extension using a package I found locally, thinking it was the latest release. Unfortunately it was not.
As I said the extension writes template files within it's own directory and back when I had packed up the extension, I must had forgotten to delete these template files resulting from tests and messing around.
Long story short, I just received a ticket about a line of text suddenly showing up below the product page description saying: "I like turtles!"
The ticket itself was very professional though and the client didn't forget to mention that the "notice" was not part of their product feed data. No shit! LOL2 -
Back when I was still in school for comp sci we had an advanced software engineering and design class with c++. At this time, everyone was expected to be proficient enough with cpp to go ahead and properly work with whatever the instructor would throw at us. And pretty much everyone was since past classes included a lot of c++ development. Of course, efficient at least related to academic studies rather than actual real world development.
Our teacher would mix in a lot pf phyisics and mathematics into what we were doing, something that I greatly enjoyed, while at the same time putting real world value concerning cpp best practices to avoid common pitfalls in the development of said language. Since most bugs seemed to be memory based he would be particularly strict about that.
One classmate, good friend and an actual proper developer now a days would ALWAYS forget to free his resources...ALWAYS for whatever fucking reason he would just ignore that shit, regardless of how much the instructor would make a point on it.
At one point during class on a virtual lecture the dude literally addressed a couple of students but when he got to my boy in particular he said: "you are the reason why people are praying to Mozilla and Hoare to release Rust as fast as possible into a suitable alternative to high performant code in C++, WHY won't you pay attention to how you deal with memory management?"
And it stuck with me. I merely a recreational cpp dev, most of my profesional work is done on web development, so I cannot attest to all the additional unsafe code that people encounter in the wild when dealing with cpp on a professional level.
But in terms of them common criticisms of C and C++ for which memory is so important to work with, wouldn't you guys say that it comes more from the side of people just not knowing what they are doing rather than a fault on the language itself?
I see the merits and beauty of Rust, I truly do, it is a fantastic language, with a standardized build system and a lot of good design put into it. But I can't really fathom it being the cpp killer, if anything, the real cpp killers are bad devs that just don't know what they are doing or miss shit.

Contracting:
Con - It can be hella stressful and last minute, especially when contracts and agencies are a real pain.
Con - finding out you’re probably gonna need to go to site at like 11PM the day before, and train tickets are a fucking scam
Pro - Sitting in first class with a complimentary croissant and orange juice isn’t so bad.
Pro - Being able to finally travel to an Apple Store to get that MacBook you’ve been eying for a while because now you actually have to travel. 👀2 -
Interns' first day:
"Here is some documentation I found really handy, got me up and running quick"
"Here's a video series on the some of the stuff we work with and maintain. Found it super useful!"
Several months later:
They didn't use any of it, and I answer questions constantly. WHY!?
I started less than a year ago, and I'm the most senior on my team in this country. So it's all falling to me and I don't know how to hold their hands so they'll be able to learn and figure out what to do? Do I just start being rude and telling them to google things?6 -
This is a story of how I did a hard thing in bash:
I need to extract all files with extension .nco from a disk. I don't want to use the GUI (which only works on windows). And I don't want to install any new programs. NCO files are basically like zip files.
Problem 1: The file headers (or something) is broken and 7zip (7z) can only extract it if has .zip extension
Problem 2: find command gives me relative to the disk path and starts with . (a dot)
Solution: Use sed to delete dot. Use sed to convert to full path. Save to file. Load lines from file and for each one, cp to ~/Desktop/file.zip then && 7z e ~/Desktop/file.zip -oOutputDir (Extract file to OutputDir).
Problem 3: Most filenames contain a whitespace. cp doesn't work when given the path wrapped in quotes.
Patch: Use bash parameter substitution to change whitespace to \whitespace.
(Note: I found it easier to apply sed one after another than to put it all in one command)
Why the fuck would anyone compress 345 images into their own archive used by an uncommon windows-only paid back-up tool?
Little me (12 years old) knowing nothing about compression or backup or common software decided to use the already installed shitty program.
This is a big deal for me because it's really the first time I string so many cool commands to achieve desired results in bash (been using Ubuntu for half a year now). Funny thing is the images uncompressed are 4.7GB and the raw files are about 1.4GB so I would have been better off not doing anything at all.
Full command:
find -type f -name "*.nco" |
sed 's/\(^./\)/\1/' |
sed 's/.*/\/media\/mitiko\/2011-2014_1&/' > unescaped-paths.txt
cat unescaped-paths.txt | while read line; do echo "${line// /\\ }" >> escaped-paths.txt; done
rm unescaped-paths.txt
cat escaped-paths.txt | while read line; do (echo "$line" | grep -Eq .*[^db].nco) && echo "$line" >> paths.txt; done
rm escaped-paths.txt
cat paths.txt | while read line; do cp $line ~/Desktop/file.zip && 7z e ~/Desktop/file.zip -oImages >/dev/null; done3 -

My father had a PC with Win3.11 where young me was allowed to play solitaire and an educational programs for kids, later on, followed Win98. I was fascinated with this big grey boxes which could do so many things, especially connect you to the Internet where you could find knowledge about EVERYTHING. (Someone remember the "Blinde Kuh" search engine?)
I remember my father connecting the modem with a long cable all the way through several rooms to the TAE-outlet and the weird sounds the device made.
I often heard "Get away from the PC or your eyes will become rectangular!" when I was sitting there for hours over hours reading and playing.
When I was ten, I got my first own computer, a trusty 486er (386 with logical coprocessor! 8MB RAM if I remember correctly. Weeee! :D) which was my uncle's old PC with Win95.
I started writing on the PC and got into several online communities ... it went downhill from there. :D11 -

One of the downsides of my job is that I do User Support at three levels...
Sometimes they can with a valid support request, and sometimes it can be a easy one, sometimes isn't.
But there are times when they came with an idiotic situation that (most of times) it can be avoided if they can read the fucking message that the application in question show to them.
In those times, I already knew the problem they have by the time they already finished to describe it... In the meanwhile my thoughts go down into a rabbit hole and forgot the whole point of the call 😂
Oh... Well, at least I can fake that I was passing inside a tunnel 😂4 -
I'm actually making something for someone now. That means I have to make sure it works in IE. Which means no ES6. I die a little inside every time I type 'var'. 😫4

Watched a co-worker configure a new "MacBook pro" as a replacement for the four-year-old one this personcurrently has. A replacement machine is justified as the old one is on the fritz... Naturally because MacBooks aren't any better than any other machine, build quality or otherwise. I still cannot fathom why anyone would even consider budgeting over $3000 for a single machine, only to then buy several adapters just to make the thing work.
Apple is off the deep end. People who fall for that BS are off the deep end.
I feel like showing the manager several alternative models at half the price just to make the point that MacBooks are a pointless waste of money.4 -

Just got my laptop back from the store, after having sent it in over 6 weeks ago due to a faulty keyboard. I had made a system image of the hard drive before I sent it in, so I could just restore it and have it ready to go. So I get the backup restoring, and at around 75%, the laptop died. I forgot to plug it in.
I am now currently downloading windows. This is going to be a long night.3 -
I learned C with a K&R copy a friend gave me years ago. Now at University we in CompSci get taught in Python the first year and Java next while the engineers start with C and (I'm guessing) move on to assembly later on.
This friend comes to me all worried because he has to submit the next day a working Reversi game for the console written in C. Turns out the game was divided among two labs and he failed to submit the first one.
The guy is smart but once a week or so, when we met to smoke a joint and relax with some other friends, he was always talking about how he would prefer something like law but that would be bad business back in Egypt.
Back to the game, I get completely into it. First hour checking all the instructions he was given, then reviewing the code he wrote and copied from Internet. We decide start from scratch since he doesn't really get what the code he copied do. It took us 10 hours only stopping to eat but we get all the specifications of both labs perfectly.
A week after that he comes to me: "my TA said your code is the ugliest shit he's ever seen but he gave me a perfect score because it passed all the tests". I'm getting better (the courses I'm taking help me a lot) but what really made me happy is that he solved the next lab by himself (Reversi wasn't the first time I helped him, only the first time he was absolutely lost). Now he actually gets excited about coding and even felt confident for his programming final.
No more talking about being a lawyer after those 10 hours, totally worth it.1 -
Am I the only one who doesn't like NoSQL? I really like relational databases.

What a day.
Reviewing and merging a months worth of work, configuring cloudformation for the new changes, and deploying to the staging environment when err mer gawd AWS decides to shit it's self.
Nothing like spotting "rollback in progress" and then not being able to access the EC2 instance... or ANY instance for that matter, from the console, so I'm like fine , I'll just wait for the roll back to finish.... it's usually only 5-10 minutes but no.... 3 hours later.
Guess I know what I'll be trying again tomorrow.
https://itnews.com.au/news/...rant thank god the rollback worked i don't like seeing rollback in the log why you break aws when shit hits the fan it wasn't me not my fault for a change7 -
I sometimes think back to that asshole on stackoverflow that said "op wants a solution like that" after I, the op, told him I don't like that solution.2

So I was thinking whenever to run a Kanban-Board style ala Trello subdomain for the people on my site that are helping me with bug hunting and such and I came up with this article about this project that got 6k Stars in Github in 5 days https://github.com/thedaviddias/..., what is this project about? " The perfect Front-End Checklist for modern websites and meticulous developers "
Here is the article for those wishing to read more about it https://medium.freecodecamp.org/how...1 -
rant = Music
Watching the Hits for this month...
FUCK
One good music for every 10.
So many new Artists ... And so many that suck. Makeup and Autotuning does not make a Singer.
Even some that can't even really sing or even speak right.
Anyone know Bebe Rexha? WTF? Just an example of a "singer" that can't even speak properly...3 -
"please like our new post on LinkedIn"
AGH fuck off asking every employee to like your shitty "oh we hired some one new" posts
I don't fucking care that it then seems like an active company. I like shit only if I actually like it... Not some boring ass shit post
Also stop trying to micro manage your employees... Like actually wtf...1 -
When I just learned about PostgreSQL, I was pronouncing it like "postérgé", like protégé
why am I so cringe13 -
Aye, I almost fight with everybody at work(they always think it is funny). I'm not good at listening to others when it comes to dev convo (like related to coding or some logic stuff).
So it is like someone is explaining to me that this should be like this and in between, I ask 100questions like "why like this? why not like this?","but what if I just skip it?" etc
and they always go like, "Someone is going to kill you so badly".
That's it. -
Sometimes I feel like I was born to code.
So I like making design, print and wear them.
Stay Safe Folks.
And Happy Coding5 -
I don't have a job so uhhhh I would suggested don't go dressed like a slob look nice like not to nice but like worthy like a button up shirt blue jeans and combed hair and shoes nice looking one burshed/combed3

I just got out of the office late and in a hurry to catch the train. I was in the zone dude, I was in it. I made an huge maintainability improvement on a framework I've worked on during the last year.
I fucking forgot to push and I'm in data corruption/laptop thievery anxiety 😥😥😥😥2 -
Anyone else code to de-stress sometimes?
Just took a calc exam and now I’m going to work on a project I started today to help myself feel better about my impending doom.2 -
I don't like it when guys use emojis when chatting with me. I find it weird.
But when girls do it, I like it. It's hot.🔥9 -
I like my partners how I like my passwords.
A new one every 3 months, and a different one on every site.10 -
So I'm pretty sure that when I went all in to Apple's Siri shitfest and turned on "Hey, Siri" that I had to accept some kind of privacy notice or some shit. Essentially, being an iPhone user and turning on that service, I've agreed to allow them to listen to me.
But what about the guy who sits next to me? Are his rights to privacy being infringed because my phone can also hear him? If so, who is the one infringing? Me or Apple?
Apple is just an example, but imagine if someone has an Echo in an office or a Google Home. Or what if you're unknowingly standing next to someone with a Google or Apple device that's always listening?
I know my old Android phone had picked up people at the grocery store before. I never turned on "Ok Google" but I used the speech to text of the keyboard a few times. When people showed how you could go see what Google had "heard", I was surprised to find how many OTHER people it picked up.
Anyway, just some thinking. -
I managed to remember some old Bitwarden (password manager service, I remember that linuxxx recommended me this one a looong time ago) credentials, so I logged in. I found an old devRant account - not my first though (I deleted it).
I've been a random lurker all this time (this is the first dev community I've been and I'm not planning to leave it until it dies), and it's good to login just to give my 2 cents.
I love you all. Seriously. I love you all with every single bit of my heart (get it?), impartially. Thanks for existing.
Here's an interrupted "caramelCase posted a new rant!"; it's actually longer but a wild guy ++'d my comment.
p.s: seeing my avatar, I don't use c++ anymore. I've just grew with Python haha12 -
I hate Apple's complete ineptness to the need of a decent way to move all your pictures, not just your recent pictures, between two iPhones.2
-
A few days back I joined my first job. I didn't had so many expectations but still I had a little hope. But no the trainer was a dumb ass person, like he did so many annoying things. I'll give you one, he repeatedly tried putting hdmi cable in VGA port. Even after we told him.4

i watched "1 week in vr" this week. I reommend it.
https://youtu.be/BGRY14znFxY
I like that there's no hard statement like "vr good/bad". It's more like an introspective emotional experience. -
Some older woman in my building tried to cyberbully me. She found a back door because the building’s online message board emails everyone in the building and those emails have a link to email the author.
You bet I snitched on her to building management after she continued to email me after I had asked her to stop and told her that her email was offensive. I don’t tolerate people who make assumptions about my ethnicity and use that as a reason to send me demeaning messages.
And you bet I contacted the developers of the building’s message board about the backdoor. And of course they implied that I could have prevented this and sent me instructions. No, I could not have prevented this and those instructions they sent me would have never applied to my comment on the message board.6 -
I just became an android dev last week, yay for me. Though, I really hate how I inherited more than 50k lines of spaghetti!
They ask me to fix this and that, but that's okay for me, I can manage this.
The worst thing is we don't use any kind of version control system. And I'm always tasked to merge my work with other 2 android dev working on same spaghetti.1 -
I feel so overwhelmed. I feel like I'm never going to actually learn everything about programming. I feel like I'm just going to learn some new API every time I want to do some thing. I feel like I'll lose the ability to do basic programming. I feel like I need a cup of coffee.3
-
For some reason I would find it quite nice if Brackets or some other good IDE had a mobile version.
Since I don't have a laptop at this time and I'm a teenager that is dead broke, I might as well be able to work on my projects on my phone and just upload them into my drive for later use.
Because trying to do my school projects is annoying when all of the computers/chromebooks don't have anything that I can use.
(And because they're district devices, you can't do much except for what they want you to)
So I end up having to either wait until my actual programming class (which is an hour long, and since we're sitting down at a computer it feels like 20 minutes) or I could wait until I get home and do it on my desktop PC.
So yeah, I think it'd be nice for a mobile Brackets (or other IDE, I just personally like Brackets)2 -
Someone on WhatsApp asked me did I like the new update or not ?
Well here is what I replied,
WHAT THE FUCK ?! NOOooo ! already there is Snapchat whose USP is this feature, Snapchat is Snapchat, then they introduced this feature on Instagram that's ok...but WhatsApp should be WhatsApp.
ALL I WANTED IS A SIMPLE PLAIN MESSAGING APP, THAT'S IT !
Now it's wasting my time more, earlier I just used to see Instagram & Snapchat stories in my free time BUT now !? I will see these fucking stories again here on WhatsApp too... BECAUSE I can't help it, it's in our human mind psychology too, we are curious beings, we are somehow bound to open that Status Tab when we will see a green dot ! If it's not true SEE THE NEWS ! NASA just found a whole new Solar System just ~40 light years away ! YES we are curious, we explore, we invent things.
I hope they will roll it back, but NO the ugly truth my friend is people will rant about and forget, and we will end up using it too, hate this seriously ! for instance the new iPhones have no 3.5mm audio jack, WTF ?! well say goodbye to my favourite ear buds ! and buy these FUCKING NEW Monstrously over priced bound-to-buy pair of earbuds if you need high quality audio out.
AND are we bound to be slaves and continue using these features because everyone else is doing so ? NO ! I will use whatever I like the most, I will go back to the roots, may be use those old school IMs and may be ask others to join it.6 -
Is there ever any reason for SINGLE Hibernate SQL query/template to join like 10 different tables, do math, and come out to like 30 lines?
This is not a stored procedure, it's a single SELECT2 -
Why is every dev obsessed with dark themes? I feel like I NEED to like them as well to fit in. :/10
-
Turned in my two weeks... and im on lunch with the team and the boss.
Why did I do this, this is just awkward. 😥 -
Ugh. Sending data to a 3rd Party API and for a small subsection of these requests getting error response "A system error occurred". PM: "Who's fault is it? Ours or them?" ... Agh come on, fault is something you can make up, they can make up and entirely irrelevant and unhelpful to anybody. Client: "Why is broken, ideally it would never fail" ... everyone is in goo goo gaa gaa land

Last week I had an initial interview for a mid-senior C# position, and I got asked to do a technical test to check on my actual skills.
The problem is that the skills required to meet all the criteria in said test are far beyond my actual knowledge, so I'm 100% sure I'm going to fail the test.
Now, the question is, should I be honest with the person that's going to review whatever I manage to do, and tell them upfront that I've never done this or that? Should I even try to do it on the test, even if it's the first time I try to do some of the points mentioned on the criteria?
It's the first time this happens to me, and I'm tempted to just tell them I don't feel capable of completing it, and leave it there.10 -
unit test apologist: what’s your fetish?
Me: I like curves. You like that?
unit test apologist: no, I like…3 -
How dangerous am I?
I code it live.
I code while people are working on our website and make all the changes live. And if I notice an abrupt stop in responses to our logs I git stash my changes.5 -
Hey, I hear you like developers ranting! Maybe you also like developers swearing: https://twitter.com/gitlost1
-
I just realized you cant disable Microsoft sending data to themselves. You can choose between normal mode and "basic" mode where less information is being sent. This is after the 5th "please wait" screen btw7
-
Alright my fellow devs and other tech related/adjacent people, we can easily glean from your rants and profiles what you do while developing. But I want to get to know the person behind the screen. After all we aren't our jobs.
So, outside of software development and related activities, what do you do in your spare time?7 -
int main() {
char age = 0x14;
char tmp = 1;
while ( age & tmp ) {
age &= ~tmp;
tmp <<= 1;

return age |= tmp;

eBay's APIs make me want to cry.
Take the sandbox for example:
- Every time you log into a session, it logs you out.
- When you create an order (eventually!) and want to retrieve it, tough shit it doesn't feel like doing that today.
- Functionality both exists and doesn't exist at the same time on both the LIVE and Sandbox APIs. I don't know how they've managed to get quantum computers in their server room, but their GOD DAMN API LIBRARIES ARE NOT THE BEST USE CASE FOR QUANTUM COMPUTING!!
I don't know if I despise eBay or Magento more...undefined shit apis quantum computing i would like to poke my eyes out with a spoon wtf am i doing with my life ebay -
can anyone recommend a nice c++ ide on linux?
I've tried eclipse, but it's a bit bulky and I don't like it's makefile set up.
I do like geany, but I would like autocomplete on it :P8 -
No boss, I love receiving a brief from you, doing the work exactly as asked, and then having to go through it again with you over the phone while you decide x, y and z needs changing.
-
which type of variable do you like using more than the other:
-Float
or
-double
Personally I like float more idk why... I just like adding the f at the end of the number xD (3.14f)1 -
Short sorry: How I left the university.
I was working already.
Every morning I was getting a bus to go to the university. My job place was on the way to the university, so every time when I was passing by the office I was thinking about all the things I can do at job, then, simply, I was getting out of the bus saying to myself: fuck that knowledge that university gives. I want to practice.4 -
I am getting my first apartment next Saturday, and it's awesome. And I was thinking of buying a great desktop computer because my laptop is getting old and I want a real desk with a real modern computer, also as a symbol of my new life coming. It would have costs me around 1300€, but guess what, I just spent that yesterday to pay the real estate agency, the deposit, and the first rent for that apartment 😭 I guess I'll have to wait again for that new pc...10

I feel like I know typescript a lot better than JavaScript... Is that strange? 😂
I mean after studying languages like C#, I feel like JavaScript is so random, I feel like it has no structure and that I don't know how to code in JavaScript. However when I start using typescript I just feel like I can understand what I am doing on another level. I would like to learn JS more in depth, anyone that has any tips?1 -
I feel like half the time I spend doing Python is fixing forgotten colons.
Seriously, it seems like a massive incoherence in the language to me, it drives me crazy!
I want to like you Python, but you make it difficult :(1 -
Make an awesome app that lets devs rant about their daily basis and no one bites an eye, change the way they navigate and everyone loses their head2

Did Micha from MichaBros 💥 just say AlexDeLarge in their first episode and is it actually AlexDeLarge?6

(Honestly, I liked spaghetti code) -
I'd like to learn go while building a web backend. but I'm not how should I start it. I mean, should I use any framework?
I'd like to use MongoDB, so a mongoose like ORM/library would be awesome8 -
Yesterday I went to a Technology Fair here in Setúbal, Portugal and I talked to a guy that was representing Microsoft. He talked to me like I was superior just because I told him I was taking a course of IT Engineering, like... why would he talk to me like that???3

Headphones on in a (fairly) quiet place with my phones in silent. And I'm working on something I like using tools I like.

Sometimes I feel like I can achieve everything in this very moment, sometimes, I'm like "meh! why do I exist? why I'm working that hard." 🥴1

Has anyone ever thought of/written like a letter of recommendations for themselves? I guess like how you think ppl like ur boss sees you?3

When you go out to have a client meeting, then the client doesn't show up (and you only learn they won't show up after you have texted them twice).
Looks like I need to start sending out meeting reminder emails again.... -
I really want an electric skateboard ....
I feel like it would complete my programming persona....
Anyone got anything like that ? -
An I the only one who gets scared when a piece of code break. Like I feel like a bad little kid like omg I broke it please don't look I'm sorry please I didn't mean I'm so sorry

I feel like I am not CS major.

!rant advice needed
I have an interview at a company this week who work in PHP, magento, angular js, swift and sometimes c#. Sounds quite good for a new grad with one year of experience in PHP and front end.
The problem is the salary is 20-22k. My friends are looking in London and the ones who ha e secured roles are 36k and 40k. They are roughly the same level of developers as me.
So what to do? Probably turn it down? I don't know what o should expect but I was hoping for around 30k. I need the money for personal reasons and 22k doesn't seem like a lot for a first class computer science graduate with a year and a half industry experience. I could be wrong?7 -
Looking to get another keyboard and would like to hear some recommendations. I’d like something low profile if possible. Currently using a Keychron K3, which I do really like but I would also like to try something new.6
-
I made the Star Wars Crawl using vanilla web tech and show it on my website once the Konami Code is entered.
IT TOOK ME 2 HOURS, WHY WOULD I DO THIS? I always end up doing random mini-projects that amuse me but bring litteraly no added value to my work. 😂😭 -
It's not often that I yell, or even write in all caps. And it would be very nice to be able to write in red, all caps, bold text but there's something that I would really like to say, or rather yell, to || at my systems development teacher (and a bunch of other people), and it's this:
STOP BEING SO FUCKING VAGUE ABOUT SHIT THAT YOU SHOULDN'T BE VAGUE ABOUT SHIT. I'm really really really really really really tired of listening to "probably" and "maybe" and "there's a chance that" about shit where those words shouldn't be applicable. I don't really wanna hear about what the C# compiler probably does (with like 2 different suggestions) and I don't wanna hear about what laws there might be in place and possibly and probably and oh god just stop -
Where to start learning openGl??? I know, theres sometting like google, but I would like to hear things like good practises and stuff...3

I like the new WhatsApp!!
There I said it.
Why?
- Snapchat was practically useless piece of crap for me. No one that matters to me used it. That app is a data hog and battery killer.
- Meanwhile, What'sapp cared enough to be datafriendly to those in developing world. Like, enabling video playing while it's downloading.
- Whatsapp is not a data hog or battery killer.
- Snapchat sucks shit unlessn on ios.
- I hate Facebook because if it's spam and i stopped using it. With new WhatsApp update, I'm less likely to miss out on what is happening with people i actually know. I know facebook owns WhatsApp, but it doesn't really matter.
- No stupid discover ads or promos like in snapchat -
Am I the only one that feels like they're cheating when they use libraries like Angular to make stuff easier? I dont want to feel like that but it just seems to happen :/3
-
I just realized that my collegues don't like my new mechanical keyboard, while I like it very much. I told them that it's not that noisy, it's only a different sound. I demonstrated that typing on a not mechanical keyboard with brute force! Now they like it.

Went for an internship interview today
Interviewers= tell us a little about yourself
Me thinking haha I can mention the time I took a 300 level course in my freshman year (have ranted about this) and show them I can take up a challenge = I'm known in my batch for not making smart decisions
Interviewers = sarcastic clap
What the actual fuck,no why why would I even start off like this fucking shit what even am I stupid what even. Great job man great job.3 -
i feel like a fucking failure, I am so tired of programming, i dont even like it anymore, and all my coworkers are programmer gods. I feel like a burden. Part of it might be imposter syndrome but for the most part its true.10

Inspired by @Raspik's post on MacOS, I too would like to admit something.... I don't like dark themes.
Be gentle.6 -
I often get posed the option of using Go or Node, personally I think they’re both good languages and that they both have different purposes. But I was just wondering, what’s the sentiment on DevRant?9

To all ranters with stickers.
Did you get some confirmation for your stickers. I sent a mail months ago. Maybe some delay because I am not in the US3 -
I know it made sense resource wise, but being on constant support/incident tickets, bug fixes, out of hours & weekend deployments for the past like four months really drains you.
Though, now I have the opportunity of completing half a sprint on my own, while dealing with the ongoing incident tickets.
Not exactly what I hoped for, but I guess it's a change.1
